The date was Saturday, November 5th set for SPJST Statewide Volleyball Tournament at the Recreation Center in Temple and it was a pleasant day for almost any activity.

The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) officers and directors had a meeting scheduled at RVOS Fire Insurance Headquarters in the morning of the same day so Brother Sid Pokladnik and your editor attended that meeting until 12 o'clock when the meeting adjourned and then we attended the volleyball tournament.

At the meeting, plans were discussed about the progress and creating more interest in the Czech Educational Endowment known as the "Czech Chair." We hope many more people will respond in donations to this effort which certainly is a worthy effort for the future of our students and children.

When we arrived at the. Recreation Center, the tournament was in full swing and it certainly was a pleasure to see so much fraternal cheering for various lodge teams. There were eight teams from eight lodges represented and a good crowd in attendance.

Supreme Lodge representatives included President Howard Leshikar, Secretary and Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, Directors Andrew Vavra (I), Willie E. Kohutek (II), and Sid Pokladnik (III) were also "rooting" for their lodge teams; there may have been others also we did not see.

SYD Claudette Reese and FAC Frank Klinkovsky were keeping check on the scoring of the teams and keeping the scoreboard updated.

There was much enthusiasm and good - sportmanship displayed everywhere, and such activities certainly will help our SPJST Society.

This writer understands that New Tabor Lodge No. 17 won first place and Lodge 13, Dime Box placed second. Our congratulations to all the teams! ***

To stave off the life - threatening flu, the American Lung Association is, for the first time, urging all family members and caretakers of high - risk groups to get flu shots. The chronically ill and elderly are most at risk of contracting serious or fatal cases of flu and pneumonia, which kill some 68,000 yearly. Even though these high - risk groups are urged to get flu shots, approximately 80 percent of them fail to do so. November and December are the best months to get the shot, which costs $10 or less at public - health clinics and up to $35 through a private physician. About 70 percent effective at fighting off the flu, the vaccine helps prevent the illness or ensures a less severe case. You cannot get the flu from the shot, and doctors say it's safe for everyone except those with egg allergies.

Box 100, Temple, TX 76503 100, however, if we receive an address change, we forward it to Temple. *** Many parents believe that a part time job will teach their teenagers responsibility, the value of a dollar and useful work skills. It can. But too much of a good thing can backfire.

Studies indicate that working students show an increased tendency toward lower grades, drug use and dropping out. Specifically, the negatives begin to outweigh the positives when students work more than 15 to 20 hours a week.

Most youngsters don't "sock away" their money, either. Students tend to spend their earnings on personal items rather than save for college or help with family expenses. This "premature affluence" can lead to an inability to budget and delay gratification.

Researchers say work alone doesn't cause these ills, but correlations do exist. Parents should take a hands - on approach and monitor how many hours their youth work, keep an eye on how earnings are spent, require a room - and - board or college contribution and encourage fewer part - time hours if schoolwork suffers. ***

Sales Representatives, the new rate books are very precise and nice - USE THEM! ***

With passage of the Deceptive Mailings Prevention Act of 1988 considered likely by year's end, it should become much tougher for a certain kind of advertiser to "take" you through the mail. A common scheme -- sending out lures for .your money d'sguised as government documents or "invoices" -- will no longer be legal unless the envelopes and the mail are clearly labeled as solicitations. Even assuming the bill is passed. Postal Service spokesmen say, deceptive mail may continue to sneak by. You can avoid being fooled if you know what to look for. The elderly are favorite targets of such schemes, which are used by both legitimate firms and con artists. Typically, recipients are led to believe they must pay a fee to protect medicare or Social Security benefits. Other firms offer to obtain Social Security cards for up to $20 or Small Business Administration loan forms are $200, services free from the government. Still others tout unnecessary name - change forms for brides for $10 to $12 and a worthless "Homestead Declaration," which supposedly protects property rights, for $25. The law would affect any solicitations for the purchase of goods or services that post as invoices, that deceptively use seals or names that imply government affiliation or endorsement, or that offer for - a - fee services that the government provides free or for less money. Mail that fails to comply with the new law would be destroyed. ***

From The Vice President's Office SFR Helen Hegwood held workshops at Lodge No. 88, Houston and Lodge No. 81, Needville along with District Director Jerry Prochazka.

There were 26 sales representatives in attendance at these workshops. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us.

It is the duty of the lodge and its members to support the sales representatives of your lodge and help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

Please urge the sales representatives of your lodge to attend the insurance seminars so that they can better serve your membership.

Hegwood giving

Dear Members: The SPJST Distict III meeting held at Lodge 25 Ennis on Sunday, October 30, 1988, was called to order at 11 a.m.

by District III President Johnnie Gaidusek. Members and guests were welcomed by Brother James Whitfil, president of Lodge 25. Brother Sidney Kacir, accompanied by his wife, brought greetings from the Supreme Lodge, mentioning others from the home office were attending district meetings scheduled . throughout the state. We were delighted to see Sister Stacy Hejny, wife of past SL Vice President Joe B. Hejny, in attendance.

Since this meeting was scheduled to be a fun day, with the various contests and volleyball tournament, the reports by the directors and committee chairmen were brief.

District III Director Brother Sid Pokladnik discussed the book, "A History of the SPJST," a Texas Chronicle, 1897 - 1980, complied by Brother Nick Morris. He stated copies were still available and could be ordered through the Home Office for $14.75. He stated that since 1980, the Supreme Lodge President is responsible and that items concerning members that might be included in the updated edition of the history of the SPJST should be sent to him at the Home Office. Brother Pokladnik also discussed the importance of the Czech Educational Foundation and reminded members who have not done so to please send a contribution.

Editor, Brother Rudy Sefcik, reminded all members who wanted to continue receiving the Vestnik to be sure to return the card that had been sent by the Home Office.

Members voted to amend the Rules and Regulations to read "that minutes from previous meeting be published in

the Vestnik 30 days prior to the next meeting."' Also, authorized the appointment at the spring meeting of three or more to serve on an Audit Committee.

The spring meeting will be held on April 16, 1989 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood, and the District III Youth Activity Day will be held on Sunday, June 26, 1989 at Lodge 25, in Ennis. Our thanks and appreciation to these lodge officers and members who graciously volunteered to host these events.

Following the delicious noon meal, all youth present joined in the singing of our "SPJST Fraternity Song," and were then dismissed for the Youth District III meeting.

Congratulations to Brother Sid and Justine Pokladnik. They were honored at Czech Day at the Fair in Dallas for being married the most number of years -- 541/2 .

We are proud of all the youth who participated in the ornament contest.

All entries were very special and beautiful. The results: Ornament Contest -- Age Group 6 - 9, 15 participants; 1st place - C.J. Novak, Lodge 84. Age Group 10 to 12 years, 6 participants; 1st place - Jesika Tierce, Lodge 66. Age Group 13 - 14 years, 6 participants; 1st place - Michael Warren, Lodge 66; and Age Group 15 - 17 years, one entry - Bill Warren, Lodge 66. Judges for this event included Dolphie Hrabina, Jeannette Andrle and Ruby Orsag. Our thanks to each of you.

The District III first place winning ornaments will be sent to the Supreme Lodge and will be placed on the SPJST State Youth Club Christmas Tree in the Museum. This tree will be featured on the cover of the Vestnik during Christmas Week. Ribbons were awarded by District III to second and third place winners in the ornament contest.

There were four participants in the kolache baking contest which included four different categories. The winners were as follows: 1st place - Georgia Pavlicek, Lodge 66, for pecan rolls; 2nd place - Georgia Pavlicek, Lodge 66, for apricot kolache; 3rd place Willie Mae Schuetz, Lodge 6, for cinnamon rolls; and honorable mention to Lydia Dobecka, Lodge 6 and Helen Kubala, Lodge 92. Our thanks to the judges including Betty Macalek, Margaret Spaniel, Betty Tonick, Agnes Horak and Winnie Whitfil. The delicious and beautiful kolache baked by the participants in the contest were auctioned off with proceeds going to the district.

Four teams were entered in the very exciting volleyball tournament at Sokol Hall, SPJST Lodge 135, with results as follows: 1st place, Lodge 154 Fort Worth; 2nd place, Lodge 66 No. 2 Team; 3rd place, Lodge 66 No. 1 Team, with honorable mention to Lodge 84 Dallas. Good luck was wished to the teams going to the State Playoff on November 5th.

Our thanks to Brother and Sister Larry Laznovsky for all their work connected with this tournament, and to Sokol for the use of the nice facilities. Our special thanks to the officials who worked five hours in conducting the tournament. These included Lisa and Lori Laznovsky, scorekeepers, and Stuart Hamilton, all SPJST Lodge 135 and Sokol members, and Rhonda Liska, Soltol member.

The Tabulating Committee included Darlene Engelke, Sharon Tierce and Dorothy Warren. They were responsible for the accounting of points for all entries and we appreciate them for a job well done.

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, November 16, 1988 DYC, Sister Bessie Peter, and assistant, Sister Rosemary Banik, deserve special recognition and thanks for all their efforts in handling all the details in connection with the contests held throughout the day.

Attendance at this meeting was 148, representing 12 lodges. In comparison, 66 attended the October 25, 1987 meeting and 103 attended on April 17, 1988.

The excitement and enthusiasm shown by participants as well as spectators was great and we look forward to even better participation and better attendance in the future.

Congratulations to Lodge 66, Waco who had 58 members in attendance.

Also, there were ten District III past presidents in attendance.

Special thanks to Lodge 25, Ennis officers and members for their wonderful hospitality and for the delicious noon meal. The nice hall made a perfect meeting place and everyone seemed to enjoy the day very much.

There will be a quilt contest and horseshoe contest at the spring meeting to be held on April 16, 1989 at Lodge 6, in Cottonwood. For details, please contact your lodge secretary, and do make your plans now to attend.

District IV President Leonard Jansa thanked those present for coming and explained what activities were planned.

District Director Stanley Broz also expressed his satisfaction to the group attending. He introduced Brother Jerry Mikulas from the Home Office, Mrs. Mikulas and son. Brother Mikulas commented on his enjoyment in visiting District IV. Sister Martha Broz organized the games that entertained many. Domino games were played, door prizes were given and a quilt contest netted Sister Elizabeth Urbanek of Lodge 49. first place. Brother Jansa of Lodge 160 won the washer pitch and the ladies of Lodge 49 won the pastry contest.

First District IV Fall Activity Day Is Held On Saturday, October 29, 1988, people of District IV met at the SPJST Hall in Rowena for their first "Fall Activity Day." On this beautiful fall day, Sister Elizabeth Walther, Lodge 49 president, welcomed all who came.

In fact, the day was so nice that some members were kept away because of cotton stripping in the District IV area.

39 Prepares For Christmas Party Lodge

Dear Readers: The SPJST Lodge No. 39 in Bryan, will have a Christmas Party on Saturday, December 3rd. The festivities will be held at the lodge home on Highway 21 West (near the A&M Annex), and will begin with a social hour from 4 to 5 p.m. The meal will be served promptly at 5 p.m.

Dear Readers, On September 25th, twelve of the members of Lodge 39 participated in the district volleyball tournament held at the New Tabor lodge. We had two teams entered and, although we came home tired and empty - handed, we had a blast! Thanks to all of you who so faithfully attended the scheduled practices. Because of you, we were able to pull together and enjoy a great time. Thanks also to the New Tabor lodge and Susan Skrabanek for coordinating the day.

On October 22nd, our lodge held its first annual "Fall Arts and Crafts Czech Festival." After many hours of work and dedication on the part of many people, the day was a "Huge" success! I am especially proud of this event because it started as "just something I thought might be fun."

However, it went over big and will, hopefully, be an annual event to which we can contribute even more to every year.

We had 26 arts and crafts booths rented by vendors from throughout the state; Mrs. Bartosh from the SPJST Museum in Temple had a very nice display for viewing. The Lodge 39 Youth Club manned six game booths and also sold baked goods donated by their parents and grandparents. Live music was provided outside during the entire course of the day, and, a variety of food and kolache was available.

This day could not have been possible without each of you willingly helping! Thanks for saying "yes" when I contacted you -- it made my job much easier! I would like to personally thank each of you who worked during the day in one capacity or another. The list is too long to name each of you,

No. 88 News

When Ann and Gus Urbanovsky mentioned to me that they were leaving on a cruise September 18th, I wondered if they'd get to go or even want to go, since Hurricane Gilbert was in the Atlantic threatening us; well, anyway, they were fortunate: the storm went some place else and they got to take this 8 - day Caribbean Cruise on the beautiful ship, the Song of Norway. They visited six islands, namely, San Juan, St. Maarten, Martinque, Barbados, Antigua, and St. Thomas.

There were seventeen friends and relatives who made this trip and they were Bert and Rosemary McLachlan from Kansas City, Kansas, who organized the cruise; George and Mary Butschek, Gus and Ann Urbanovsky, Smoke and Lil Dorn, Tex and Margaret Albrecht, all from Houston; David Dorn, El Campo, Texas; Robert and Lois McLachlan and Isabel McLachlan from Spokane, Washington; Robin Dorn from San Francisco, California; Pat Butschek from Dallas, Texas; and Edith Calcoti from Yoakum, Texas.

On this trip they toured all the above - mentioned islands; they saw many rain forests, banana, avocado and sugar cane fields; they did a lot of shopping and, of course, the delicious food on the ship has to be mentioned.

They are all looking forward to going on another cruise in 1989.

The Blue Room Party, which I have mentioned time and again, is very close. I hope all of you who don't want to miss this special occasion have gotten your tickets; it's one week before Christmas and all of us should be "Christmas Hyper" by then. The party will begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 18th with cocktails, dinner and dance until 9 p.m. The Central Texas Sounds will furnish the music.

Margaret Allbritton and her committee have been working so hard, so don't let them down. I know that roast beef and other good food will be served.

My little great - grandson, Adam Marshall, had his 6th birthday on November 4th so Saturday, the 5th, he had a party at Showbiz at noon, given by his parents. It was so much fun for all those little girls and boys, also a bit "noisy," however we all had a wonderful time.

That same evening, November 5th, the Brethren Church on North Main

had their Harvest Festival (an annual affair) with turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, green beans, pickles, homemade bread, pastries and punch, tea and coffee to drink. Some of our SPJST members, Della Miksch and Evelyn Mikolas and many more were involved. Lodge 88 was well represented at this fine event.

Ruby Cernosek, who had been very ill for many months in the hospital, died November 5th and is to be buried in Snook, Texas. She was a faithful member of Lodge 88, also always donated to the Birthday Club although she was never a member.

May she rest in peace.

Lodge 88 Choral Group and the Czech Concert Orchestra took part in the Czech Festival in Pasadena at Lodge 172 on Sunday, November 6th.

I was unable to be there, but was told it was real nice, and our groups really performed well. We are so proud of them.

AI Pierson played at our lodge Saturday, November 5th. Harley, our chairman of the Entertainment Committee, told me they had a big crowd. Lydia and Tom Marsh were in charge of the dance, with Ernest and Margie Anders and Harley Cox assisting.

Mrs. Max V. O'Canas On October 2, 1988 there was a beautiful wedding at our lodge when Elaine Annette Gerlich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Gerlich, Sr. got married to Max Victor O'Canas, son of Mrs. Rebecca O'Canas at 2:30 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Houston.

Gratitude From Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Our

Dear Friends: Our SPJST Lodge No. 92 Czechfest has come and gone for this year -- but we want all of you to know how appreciative we are of your support.

We thank Maxine Sefcik and Carl Zich for their excellent reports and pictures in the past two weeks, and we are grateful to the following groups for their help in making this first Czechfest for our lodge a success.

First, Chairman Clara Cohen kept the committee going from dawn until dusk several weeks -- feverishly prodding us but keeping us grinning and laughing all the while. The committee members, Jo Ella and Dan Kubala, EstaBelle Hubenak, Al Kercho, Kenneth Krivanek, Gordon Hubenak, Joyce and Frankie Tesar, were faithful to the end. Many thanks to each of you.

We're proud of all the young people who became involved and helped in various capacities -- Kern Kubala, Mike and Sherri Watkins, Susie and Roger Kubala, Jon and Charlie Durham, Pam Davies and Alvin Migues -- each did an outstanding job and we thank you!

Without the Ladies' Circle, we don't know what we would have done. Their booth outdoors and the drawing for the beautiful quilt and donations of cakes, kolache, and sauerkraut were much appreciated.

Our ticket takers, door watchers and tea servers were wonderful -- brought in a lot of money for food and dances: Evelyn Spacek, Louis Kubala, Helen and Albert Kubala, Rose Jaworski, Marie and Frank Tesar, Alene and Al Kercho, Ann Schneider, Ray Hubenak, Dick Durham, Mary Ann and Kenneth Krivanek, Liz and Elmer Howard, Victoria Murphy, Christine and Carl Zich, Florence and Jimmy Greer -- hope I didn't miss anyone because we surely did need your help and appreciated it. By the way, Helen Holford, Joyce and Frankie Tesar and several others did "extra duty" at the bar. Thanks a million!

We appreciate the response from the booth participants. It was a first, I believe, for Lodge No. 92 to have something of this kind and we think it will become a tradition. Watch for an announcement, maybe in early spring, and plan to have a booth again.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the various booths and rides, and we'll try to make it bigger and better next year.

The bands did an outstanding job -the Jodie Mikula Band in the afternoon and the Harold Strand Orchestra at night. The food served by Jim Riscky's Bar - B - Q along with Rudolph's Sausage was delicious and many compliments were passed along during the day about the food. The Youth Club, led by Cheryl and Gordon Hubenak, made some mighty tasty sandwiches for those who stayed for the night dance.

The Parade of Costumes was well received. We want to thank all of the out - of - town guests who participated -- they dominated the prize winners, however, we want to thank each of those who took time to dig out their kroj and vests, and those who made new costumes for this particular occasion. We could tell your hearts were in it and we're looking forward to seeing you participate again in this heritage parade. The little youngsters were darling and it is this kind of participation that we are encouraging so that our Czech culture will remain a source of pride for our children and grandchildren. Many thanks to all of you and to Mary Cecelia Krivanek and Jo Ann Hixson who so ably furnished the music and entertainment during the Parade of Costumes and Opening Ceremonies.

Our Lodge 92 officers, members, and many wonderful guests -including SL President Howard Leshikar and Mrs. Leshikar -- made the day complete with their attendance and participation. It is this kind of participation by all who keep Lodge 92 members working to keep our lodge a place of enjoyment for everyone. (By the way, John Paprskar and the rest of the Board of Trustees had the beautiful new bar and kitchen area ready for all to see for our celebration.) Come back often and share in the progress of the lodge.

Lodge No. 133, San Antonio The monthly meeting of Lodge 133 was held on October 16, 1988, at the St. Margaret Mary Activity Center, 1314 Fair Avenue, San Antonio, Texas at 2 p.m. President Anthony Trilicek opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for all deceased members.

All officers were present. Joe Stryk, flag bearer, was not in attendance.

Thirty - one members were present.

Sick report followed the reading of the minutes and treasurer's report.

Jerry Sliva was also reported on the sick list. Annie Swize was recuperating at Baptist Memorial Hospital.

President requested a nomination for fraternalist of the year. Brother Don Netek nominated Brother Bill Mares. Brother Mares has shown untiring concern and unselfish service to members of the lodge especially Brother and Sister Kleprlik. Viola Fajkus made the motion that Brother Mares be the "Fraternalist of the Year" for Lodge 133. Sister Grace Rohan seconded the motion. The members agreed.

Grace Rohan made a report on the changes in Rules and Regulations of Lodge 133 suggested by the committee of Viola Fajkus, Viola Kurtz and herself. She read the suggested changes and reported they will be voted on in November.

Frankie Campbell reported on the Youth Achievement Day held in Floresville, Texas. Charlie Kutil received recognition for his projects.

Nicholas Morrissey won first place for his talent presentation in Floresville and third place in Temple.

Brother Trilicek reported that there were 193 SPJST members living in San Antonio who were not members of Lodge No. 133. He asked members to help him contact these people and invite them to join our lodge.

Thanksgiving dinner will be served November 20, 1988 before the monthly meeting. The food will be purchased from Snogas. A motion was made by Viola Fajkus and seconded by Alma Trilicek that members and guests pay $3 for the meal; children under 12 pay $1.50. Members are asked to bring pastries. Dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m.

Members with birthdays in September and October were honored.

They were: September -- Marie Netek, Tom Moczygemba, Louis Jasek, Teresa Jasek. October -- Marcella Kleprlik, Frankie Campbell, Frank Fajkus, Doris Moczygemba.

On October 29 the Bartlett Chamber of Commerce held their fifth annual Bartlett Parade. District King Daryl Kortis and Queen Kathy Listiak represented District II grandly atop Lodge 29's float.

The rain held off long enough for the crowd to enjoy the arts and crafts booths and barbecue cookoff.

9 Snook Youth Club

Dear Vestnik Readers, Our Youth Club had a surprise Birthday Party for Mrs Minnie Kovar after our last monthly meeting. We had cake, ice cream, and punch and we made her a banner for her 92nd birthday. Happy Birthday, Mrs. Kovar!

Dear Readers, On October 20, 1988, the District V Youth Club held their third sales in the kitchen to raise money for their most look - forward - to event, the "San Antonio Express Trip."

Members were from Lodges 88 and 142. Attending from Lodge 142 Youth Club were Kim Patke, Tammy Patke and Keith Kieschnick; from Lodge 88 were Cindy Groendes, Michelle Linney, Lillian Clayton, Angela, Clayton, Tammie Wallace, Crystal Wallace, Christine Porter, Lindsey Michalak and Paul Groendes.

The kitchen sales have been pretty successful in the three Thursdays they have sold. The first week, October 6, they made $91; October 13, the youth made $97 selling to the many youth supporting game players. Concluding on Thursday, October 26, their restaurant success amounted to $96.

The youth have been selling hot dogs, cheese dogs, chili dogs, chili - cheese dogs, and frito pie.

Lodge 88 Youth Club also held their second monthly bake sale along with the District V sales. The youth sold everything from pies to cakes to strudel. Some of the youth members who worked were Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, Crystal Wallace and Michelle Linney sold some of the baked items by tray to the game players while they were seated at their tables. Youth who were present at the bake sale were Michelle Linney, Crystal Wallace, Lindsey Michalak, Tammie Wallace, Sonny Porter, Christine Porter, Lillian Clayton, Julie Clayton, Cindy Groendes, Paul Groendes, Marlene Migl and Darlene Migl.

Finally, I'd like to remind the youth of Lodge 88 that we will take a lot of important scrapbook pictures.

District V Clubbers should be reminded that you must work at the fund - raisers, which includes Thursday nights at Lodge 88 kitchen, in order to go on the "San Antonio Express Trip."

Dear Readers, Lodge No. 24 Youth Club held its monthly meeting on November 6, 1988. President Christy Marek called the meeting to order.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jason Harvell.

Secretary Melissa Holtman called the roll. Present were 17 members, 2 adults and one guest, Danny Williams.

We discussed many upcoming affairs. The Christmas Party at the lodge will be on Sundiy, December 11 with the youth program beginning at 4 p.m. We will have a practice for this program on December 4 and again on December 10t h .

Also, on December 4 we will have our meeting and afterwards we are to go Christmas caroling at local nursing homes. Everyone please attend and show your leadership in our youth club!

Our next meeting will be Sunday, December 4, with the optional meeting on Tuesday, December 6th. Happy Thanksgiving!

Dear Readers, On October 27, 1988, the joint Youth Clubs of Lodge 88 and Lodge 142 making District V come together once again to sell food in the kitchen of Lodge 88. Beginning on October 6, 1988, District V Youth Club has been selling hot dogs (cheese or chili or chili - cheese dogs) and frito pie.

This Thursday, the following youth members helped in the selling, namely, Brian Havemann, Nicholas Havemann, Michelle Linney, Paul Groendes, Cindy Groendes, Matthew Mabry, Julie Clayton, Keith Kieschnick, Crystal Wallace, Angela Clayton, Lillian Clayton, Sarah Anthony, Lindsey Michalak, Kristy Sokol, Julio Gloria, Angela Gloria, Tammie Wallace, Daniel Mabry, Darlene Migl and Marlene Migl.

74 Youth Enjoy Halloween Lodge

Dear Readers, The youth of Lodge 74, Lovelady, had a Halloween Party on October 29, 1988 at Donnie and Sherry McKenney's home. We had a bubble contest, made of a recipe of dish soap, water, salad oil and other ingredients.

This was made by Pauline Lundy, and a balloon blowing contest. Sherry McKenney and Rhonda Haynie read scary ghostly stories outside by a Jack o - lantern. Then everyone went on a "Haunted Hike" at about 9:30 p.m.

There were drums beating, a glowing pumpkin head, a headless man, a screaming witch, and screaming kids.

The performers on the haunted hike were Travis McKenney, Eric .Daye, Karen Daye, Linda Millican, and Charlotte Spruill. It was scary. We all had a great time.

Our November social will be a campout.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On November 2, 1988, Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club held their monthly meeting. The meeting was convened about 7:30 p.m. by President Darlene Migl.

Tammie Wallace led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. Members also remained standing for a moment of silence following the pledge.

Roll call of officers was then taken.

President, vice president, secretary and treasurer were all present. Sergeant - at - arms and reporter were absent. Only one committee chairman was present, namely, Tammie Wallace for the Fund - Raising Committee.

The register was then read by Secretary Michelle Linney; fourteen youth club members were present.

Adults present included DYC Marie Stayton, her DYC Assistant Nancy Steubing, Youth Leader Barbara Linney, Mrs. Havemann, Mrs. Meyer, Mrs. Michalak, Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Sokol.

Next, the secretary read the minutes from our October 5, 1988 meeting.

There were no corrections or additions to the minutes.

There was one letter of correspondence from the State Youth Department concerning the Texas Fraternal Congress Scrapbook and Poster Contest. For the scrapbook, which was a creation of the Scrapbook Committee composed of Marlene Migl, chairman, Darlene Migl and Crystal Wallace, the club received an Honorable Mention ribbon; for the poster by Crystal Wallace, the club got another Honorable Mention ribbon.

Participate In Lodge 88 Czech Day Youth

Dear Readers, On October 30, 1988, Lodge 88 held their annual Czech Day. I must say that the catered meal of turkey and dressing was just great! Was able to show patriotism by wearing a Czech costume. I was also honored, along with Paul Groendes and Marlene Migl, to be a flag bearer at the great event.

Paul carried the Texas flag, Marlene carried the Czech flag, and I carried the United States flag.

The best part of the day for me as I am sure was for Keith Kieschnick, Jamie Meyer and Nicholas Havemann was getting to welcome, as the Royalty, the members and guests to Czech Day. Later on at 5 p.m. King Keith, Queen Crystal, Duke Nicholas and Duchess Jamie had the special honor of leading the grandmarch or also known as the Parade of Costumes. Then we stayed and danced, and I say that it was a great day. I thank Lodge 88 for asking me to wear my crown and go as queen for it is so much fun.

I would like to add that all of the youth who wore costumes are to be commended. Those youth were Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, Crystal Wallace, Paul Groendes, Keith Kieschnick, Jamie Meyer and Nicholas Havemann.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 29, Taylor, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother JOE JANSKY, age 59, of Taylor, who died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 13, 1988 in Johns Community Hospital.

Mr. Jansky was born January 7, 1929 in Temple and had liyed in Taylor for the past 38 years. He had been in the grocery business for 41 years and, in June of this year, was recognized by Safeway for 35 years of service to that grocery chain. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ila Mae Jansky of Taylor; two daughters, Trish and her husband, Steve Parker, Sheryl and her husband, Terry Wilkins of Taylor; a son, Donald Jansky of Austin; two sisters, Ann Suchomel of Coupland and Lillian Klepac of Austin; two brothers, John Jansky and Henry Jansky of Taylor; and two grandsons, Miles and Stiles Parker.

Of Sympathy On behalf of our entire membership, we the Resolution Committee of Danbury Lodge No. 139, extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother EDWARD JOSEPH [EDDY] FILIPP, JR., who, after a long illness, passed away in a Houston hospital on Sunday, October 9, 1988 at the age of 55.

A lifelong resident of Danbury, Brother Filipp was active in the Danbury 4 - H Program, Danbury Little League and the Boy Scouts of America. He served on the Brazoria County Drainage District, and was president of the RVOS in Danbury. He was a member and past commander of Danbury Honeycutt American Legion Post No. 501. He was a heavy equipment operator and a member of Operating Engineers No. 450.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Filipp of Danbury; his father, Edward J. Filipp, Sr. of Danbury; two sons, David Filipp and Greg Filipp of West Columbia; one daughter, Joann Hatthorn of Angleton; two sisters, Lydia Shock and Evelyn Lassman, both of Danbury and one grandson, Corey Lukasheay of Angleton.

The rosary for Brother Filipp was recited in the Palms Chapel of Roses in Angleton on Monday at 7 p.m.

Funeral services were at the Palms Chapel of Roses at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 11 with the Rev. Joseph Kalladan officiating.

Serving as pallbearers were Louis Brown, Eugene Filipp, Stoney Garner, Donald Loesch, Ralph Peltier, Emil Ritz, Curtis Sides and C.E. Zwahr.

Honorary pallbearers were members of Honeycutt Chovanec American Legion No. 501 and Operating Engineers No. 450.

Interment was at the Danbury Cemetery with military services conducted by the Honeycutt Chovanec American Legion No. 501.

Mrs. Simcik was a housewife and a member of the Taylor Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge No. 29.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Condra Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Frank Simcik and the Rev. James Hejl officiating. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 186, Caldwell, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the surviving family of LIDIE MAE KRUPA, who passed away Sunday, October 23, 1988, in Houston, attaining the age of 89 years, 2 months and 22 days. She was the daughter of the late John and Frances (Dusek) Jurcak, and was married to the late Joe J. Krupa on October 17, 1922 who preceded her in death September, 1964.

Sister Krupa was a homemaker and a former school teacher. She taught in Frenstat and Dime Box schools until her marriage.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, fishing, playing cards and dominoes.

Funeral Mass for Lidie Mae Krupa, of Caldwell, was held at 11 a.m.

Wednesday, October 26 in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Monsignor Emilian Foltyn officiating. Interment was in St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery.

A Christian Wake service was held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Phillips Luckey Chapel led by Michael Perry.

Survivors include one son and daughter - in - law, Joe J. Jr. and Alice Krupa, of Houston; two grandchildren, Janet Lynne Jorrey of Garland and Dr. Joseph J. Krupa III, of St. Louis; two great grandchildren, Megan and Shannon Jorrey.

Sister Kratky was born in Pioneer and moved to Watauga in 1961. She was a member of King's Highway Baptist Church in Fort Worth, also of SPJST Lodge No. 92. She was a title researcher in Fort Worth in 1984. She was an amateur artist, specializing in landscape paintings.

Sister Kratky is survived by her husband, Berni J. Kratky of Watauga; father and stepmother, James C. and Joyce Elrod of Coleman; mother and stepfather, Bob and Hazel Jackson of Stephenville; two sons, Berni J. Kratky, Jr. and Ronnie Davis, both of Fort Worth; one daughter, Francene Kratky of Fort Worth; four brothers, Joe Jackson and Larry Jackson, both of Stephenville, James C. She was born October 15, 1905 to Jan Cermak and Emilie Machat Cermak in Nelsonville, Texas. She had been a resident of this area for over 68 years. She was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 186, Caldwell. She married Alvin D. Dippel September 5, 1926. She was co - owner with her husband of the Dippel Motor Company until their retirement.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Alvin E. Dippel on March 9, 1986.

Survivors include one son anc daughter - in - law, J.A. and Eleanor Dipple of Bryan; two grandchildren and two great - granddaughters.

A prayer service was held at 7 p.m.
