Lodge 183 Participates In Business Expo On September 9 and 10, SPJST Mid - Cities Lodge No. 183 participated in the annual Arlington Chamber of Commerce Business Expo at the Convention Center beside Arlington Stadium. Over 300 area businesses and services were in attendance.

The lodge exhibit drew over 200 interested people who asked what SPJST was all about and how to

become a member.

Lodge officers assisted by SFR Jim Wiest were present to answer any questions.

Lodge 183 is an active member of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce and takes every opportunity to let the public know of the great fraternal organization that is the SPJST.

The Supreme Lodge October meeting minutes are in this issue and our delegates and entire membership are encouraged to read them carefully; they give a rather full report of the business, which has transpired in the last three months since the XXV Convention. Your editor spent the entire'afternoon of Tuesday, October 4th at the Supreme Lodge meeting and observed the proceedings during that time. The twelve members of our Supreme Lodge consider the subjects brought up rather carefully and with an objective view from various approaches as to how and where these would best serve our SPJST Society.

You can see, from the minutes, that there are a number of decisions that must be made while the Supreme Lodge Board is in session.

All of us know how the decline of our Texas economy has hurt our banking and loan institutions and other businesses and we can see how it has also hurt our Society a little by the decline in real estate values; that is, very likely, the reason the delegates at the convention were concerned about the loan appraisal procedures on our real estate loan applications and made some changes in that aspect. In reviewing the minutes, we can see that Brothers Mikeska and Kacir, in fact, all five of our Supreme Lodge officers are placed in an unenviable position: -a loan application comes in with a recommendation from the district director(s) and then it is up to them to act on these. The change made in the convention should help in our Investment Department. ***

You will also note that the Supreme Lodge officers have been busy with the problem of an FRA (Family Recreation Area). That is a subject that involves more problems than appear on the surface and requires careful consideration before action is taken. There will be more information in the future about the progress on the work with the FRA. ***

The weekend of November 5th and 6th (Saturday and Sunday) is something to look forward to -- The SPJST State Volleyball Tournament in Temple Saturday, November 5th with registration at 10 a.m. at the Old City Recreation Building across the SPJST Supreme Lodge Home Office. Many of our members will wish to attend.

The Czech Festival will be held at Lodge Rozkvet No. 172 in Pasadena Saturday, November 5th and Sunday, November 6th. They should have a record attendance with the nice program they have arranged for the two days. Many people in that area are encouraged to attend the festive affair and enjoy Czech fellowship heritage, food and, of course, music. All of our members who receive the weekly Vestnik have or should have recently received a letter from Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas asking if you wish to continue receiving the Vestnik as a survey held by the Supreme Lodge; the letter contains a postpaid postcard that you MUST return if you wish to continue receiving the Vestnik. Remember, if you don't return the postcard in 30 days, the Vestnik will be discontini.d; so send it in! It doesn't cost you a penny. ***

The United States Post Office Department regulations state that sending information pertaining to "Games of Chance" in the mail is prohibited, so therefore you probably have noticed that we have limited the use of "raffle, bingo, etc." in the Vestnik; there are other words to describe your entertainment announcements and we have been using them. Please remember that we comply with the Post Office Department regulations wherever and whenever necessary to protect our Second Class mailing privileges and rights. We check these periodically with our Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir. We hope you understand and also comply. *** Explaining Social Security --For most people, Social Security is the single most important protection against poverty in old age or family hardship due to the death or disability of a breadwinner. But vital as it is, few Americans know in any detail what benefits Social Security offers. Thus the Social Security Administration's new program to provide workers a comprehensive look at the benefits to which they are entitled is a major advance in public understanding.

Using new technology, Social Security can now provide workers who request it a computerized booklet detailing, year by year, their earnings record since 1951 and spelling out how much they or their survivors would receive in benefits should they die or be disabled. The booklet also provides individuals with an estimate of their retirement benefits at ages 62, 65 and 70. To receive the earnings and benefits statement, individuals must fill out form SSA - 7004, which can he obtained in person at local Social Security offices, by phone or by mail.

Social Security has always urged workers to check their earnings' records regularly to avoid reporting errors that might reduce future benefit levels. But until now the agency has had no automated system that would permit younger workers also to receive estimates of their benefits to use in planning for retirement or an untimely accident. That is critically important personal financial information; so important, in fact, that many people have been willing to pay private firms to, provide such estimates. By making them easily available at no charge to all workers, Social Security is performing an important service that can improve the quality of every family's financial plan.

Report Of The Fourth Regular Quarterly Meeting Of The Supreme Lodge SPJST Held October 3 & 4, 1988 At The Home Office In Temple After due consideration, Director Prochazka moved that the Supreme Lodge has no authority to act on the matter addressed in the petition and has no options but to reject the action requested in the petition. The motion was seconded by Director Kohutek.

Vote revealed, President Leshikar, Vice President Gebala, Secretary Treasurer Mikeska, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Pokladnik, Director Vavra, Director Kohutek, Director Prochazka and Director Hrncir voting in favor. Director Broz and Director Vanek voted in opposition. The motion carried.

On the matter of calling the question to the attention of the By - Law Committee while the committee was meeting the day after the convention, it was stated that the By - Law Committee could not have resolved the problem since the convention had already adjourned.

It was agreed that President Leshikar with the assistance of Legal Advisor Kacir, respond in writing to the petition and a copy be mailed to all those signing the petition. The letter was to explain the reasons for the actions taken by the Supreme Lodge and all individuals concerned addressing the questions in the petition. The motion authorizing the letter was by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Vanek and it carried unanimously.

OLD BUSINESS

Recess was taken for lunch from 12:10 p.m. until 1:30 p.m.

LICENSING PUBLIC HEARING Report was made on the public hearing on licensing of agents held by the State Board of Insurance attended by President Leshikar, Vice President Gebala and Legal Advisor Kacir. It was agreed to continue to monitor any new developments.

NATIONAL FRATERNAL CONGRESS MEETING - President Leshikar discussed the recent NFCA meeting he and Director Pokladnik attended. He discussed some of the reports.

ACTIVITIES FRATERNAL COORDINATOR (FAC) - President Frank reported that Leshikar Klinkovsky has been hired as the Activities Fraternal SPJST Coordinator effective October 17, • 1988.

There was discussion about the duties of the new position. There was also discussion about whether he could hold the FAC position and be the District II DYC. After discussion, Director Prochazka moved and Director Vanek seconded that the FAC be a full time job and the FAC cannot hold the position of DYC. The motion carried unanimously.

LEGISLATIVE NETWORK Consideration was given to a preliminary proposal to establish a grassroots network in our local lodges.

On motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska, it was decided to proceed with refining and developing the network for further action. Motion carried unanimously. One purpose of the network is to establish and maintain communication with public officials throughout the state.

CZECH LANGUAGE TAPE - The proposed typescript for the first tape was reviewed and it was decided to proceed with the first two tapes. The tapes are directed to a conversational knowledge of Czech and are being developed by Calvin Chervenka.

FAMILY RECREATIONAL AREA - President Leshikar brought up for consideration a preliminary report and projected cost estimates of the FRA. The By - Law Committee suggested that a committee be set up to investigate purchase of land for a FRA. The convention approved and amended the By - Law Committee recommendation by specifying that a referendum be conducted within 6 months.

The Board studied the projected investment in the facility and projected operational costs. It was decided to request our actuary to do a financial impact study on the basis of the following investment and annual operating expense estimates: INITIAL INVESTMENT $500,000 750,000 1,000,000 ANNUAL OPERATING EXPENSE $75,000 100,000 150,000 The Board requested the following: (1) Substantiated cost estimates of the projected improvements (2) Cost estimates on cabins in lieu of dormitories (3) Get cost estimate of .leasing a facility from 2 to 6 months During the discussion the following additional questions and information came up for consideration:

(1) There would be a twofold effect on the Society operation. The funds allocated would become non - interest producing and the loss of revenue would need to be added to operating cost for a true picture of cost.

(2) How much revenue could be raised from member use of the facility.

What type of use fees would our members be willing to pay to help offset operating costs?

(3) How many members could be expected to use the facility?

A Special Supreme Lodge meeting was set for December 2 at 10 a.m. to consider the FRA. VICE PRESIDENT GEBALA'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: SALES - Report was made that in comparison with the same period last years, sales are down 270 members and over 8 1/2 million in insurance written.

BONUS TO STATE FIELD PERSONNEL - On motion by Director Hrncir, seconded by Director Vanek, the third quarter bonuses were authorized. Motion carried unanimously.

SALES INCENTIVE TRIP - Report was made that because of the number that will be qualified to attend the sales incentive trip, the funds allocated are not sufficient to accommodate the entire group. On motion by Director Vanek, seconded by Director Hrncir, authorization was granted to allocate additional funds to accommodate the entire group. The motion carried unanimously.

MODIFIED LIFE - Report was given on the status of the new modified life which will replace our term to age 16 plan.

PRINTER AND TAPE DRIVE Vice President Gebala reported that the IBM printer and tape drive authorized the previous meeting have been installed and are operational.

SECRETARY - TREASURER MIKESKA'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: REO No. 163 - Report was made on status of the agreement with the lodge.

It was decided to inform the lodge that if the terms of the contract are not met, the option to purchase will expire on December 31, 1988.

4/VESTNiK—Wednesday, November 2, 1988 efforts to sell and foundation problems and needed repairs were reviewed. Bids for foundation repairs, new carpets and painting were reviewed. A motion was adopted to authorize Supreme Lodge officers and Director Pokladnik to reach a decision on the repairs and to consider and act on all offers. Motion carried unanimously.

REO No. 171 - The property was sold for $105,000. Projected profit on the sale subject to fulfillment of the contract was reported to be $9,259.63.

The sale was ratified on motion by Director Kohutek, seconded by Director Vavra. Motion carried unanimously.

DIRECTOR HANDBOOK - The Director Handbook prepared by Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska was reviewed. It is intended as a guide and summary of the duties and responsibilities of the directors and was approved with added interpretations on motion by Director Hrncir, seconded by Director Vanek.

Motion carried unanimously.

HOME OFFICE CARPET/REDECORATION Tentative carpet and color selections were viewed by the Board. Plans and specifications for carpets and upholstery material were studied, reviewed and explained. Bids and price quotes from carpet companies and upholsterers were studied and discussed. It was pointed out that the condition of the 18 - year - old carpets is such that they should be replaced as soon as possible; whereupon Director Hrncir moved and Director Vavra seconded the following motion.

(1) That the bid to install 1598 square yards of Milliken carpets as described in the specifications be accepted from Casey furniture.

(2) That the upholstery bid from Cecilia Voelter be accepted.

(3) That funds be authorized for the remainder of the redecorating project including some painting of walls, painting of some office furniture and other items as needed.

(4) The total cost was estimated at $55,000.

The motion carried unanimously.

FINANCIAL SECRETARY MIKULAS' OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: DIRECT BILL CONVERSION Report was made that 41,965 certificates have now been converted to direct bill consisting of 80 lodges.

VESTNIK - Report was made that 9,935 copies of the Vestnik are mailed out weekly. Postage amounts to $1,023 weekly and publishing cost is approximately $1,200 weekly.

Consideration was given to a survey of Vestnik subscribers requiring return to remain on the mailing list. The proposed survey mailout was reviewed and approved on motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by Director Prochazka and carried unanimously.

DIRECTORS' OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: Director Kohutek discussed the bartenders' classes and gave suggestions on what can be done to protect servers of alcoholic beverage.

He discussed favorable results of having displays at two community festivals.

Director Prochazka discussed planning and favorable results in district meetings and how a country atmosphere can add to a district meeting.

He discussed harmony and cooperation of Supreme Lodge members and the importance of mutual support of the governing body to achieve good results.

Director Vanek discussed the new position of Fraternal Activities Coordinator and asked for report of plans how the individual can best be utilized in an individual district to promote the fraternal activities in the district.

He commented on the fact that the SPJST has moved up three positions and is now the 24th largest Fraternal Benefit Society in the nation.

Director Hrncir reported on a matter involving a delinquency and read a favorable letter expressing appreciation for the way SPJST worked with them during a difficult period.

Director Pokladnik expressed appreciation for being authorized to attend the NFCA meeting in New Orleans.

He reported that the NFCA has recently employed a Fraternal Coordinator who is of Czech ancestry and suggested we utilize the assistance of the NFCA Coordinator for our fraternal programs.

He shared with the Board various items of information he obtained at the NFCA that he thought would be helpful to our organization.

Recess for lunch was taken at 12 noon( until 1 p.m.

CAMP/STATE YAD Appreciation was expressed to the directors who visited camp. The YAD was said to be the best ever.

TEXAS FRATERNAL CONGRESS - Report was made that COMMUNICATION WITH the SPJST would provide five talent MEMBERS - On motion by Director acts at the TFC Youth Program.

MISCELLANEOUS - It was Broz, seconded by Director Kohutek it was decided to send an information reported that 10 youth members would mailout to all members including have winning photos displayed at the information contributions by all Temple Junior College photography Supreme Lodge officers. Carried exhibit from October 3 - 27, 1988.

BANNER - The need for a banner LEGAL ADVISOR KACIR'S OLD for parades was expressed. After BUSINESS MATTERS: discussion, it was agreed to purchase LITIGATION/TAX SUITS - There four banners. PRESIDENT LESHIKAR'S NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: PUBLICATION COMMITTEE Angeline Kristinek, the Chairman of the Publication Committee arrived to witness opening of the Vestnik contract bids. Bidders present were Larry Ingram and David Kolar. Editor Sefcik was also present to witness the bid opening.

VESTNIK BIDS - The Board opened the sealed bids for publishing and mailing of the Vestnik. Bids were submitted by (1) Stillhouse Hollow Publishers, Inc. of Temple, Texas.

(2) Hill County Press, Inc. of Hillsboro, Texas.

(3) The West News of West, Texas.

Copies of the bids will be placed of record in Exhibits Volume VII. The three bids were reviewed and discussed. Publication Committee Chairman Kristinek and Editor Sefcik both expressed their opinions.

After study and consideration, a motion was adopted to accept the low bid from Hill County Press, Inc. for printing of the Vestnik from January 1, 1989 to December 31, 1992. The motion was by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Prochazka and it carried unanimously.

WORKSHOPS - The date for the 1989 local lodge workshop was set for February 25, 1989.

SOCIETY AUTOMOBILES - It was reported that two of the SPJST automobiles are approaching 100,000 miles and consideration was given to setting of a trade - in policy for the Society's automobiles. After discussion, a motion was adopted to obtain bids on replacements for the two autos and to proceed with the replacements. The motion was by Director Vavra, seconded by Director Vanek and it carried unanimously.

HOLIDAYS - It was agreed to add Columbus Day to the list of authorized holidays for the Home Office.

SCHOLARSHIPS - The scholarship program was reviewed. It was suggested and decided to consider moving up scholarship deadlines to make it possible to award scholarships at school presentation ceremonies usually held during May There was discussion about the possibility of providing a scholarship program for students entering techincal schools. It was agreed on motion by Director Hrncir, seconded

by Director Kohutek to assign the suggestion to the Fraternal Activities Committee for study and report to the Supreme Lodge. Motion carried unanimously.

TRAVELING MUSEUM Favorable comments were expressed on Mini - Museum displays provided by the SPJST at various fairs and festivals.

SERVICE PROJECTS - It was reported that the Battleship of Texas was in process of restoration and participation in the program was suggested for the SPJST. The matter was referred to the Fraternal Activities Committee for further study.

VICE PRESIDENT GEBALA'S NEW BUSINESS MATTERS LAMPASAS - It was reported that the SPJST has a sales representative in Lampasas, Texas, and the area is not assigned to any district. It was decided to temporarily assign this area to District II for accounting purposes.

INCENTIVES - Recommendation was heard to implement a $3 per $100

of earned premium (excluding internal rollovers on Lone Pay Life) in lieu of the present incentive trips for the top 100 sales representatives subject to attendance of a minimum of two sales' training classes.

The incentive program was approved on motion by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded by President Leshikar and carried unanimously.

COMPUTERIZED SALES PROPOSALS - Vice President Gebala reported that he was in process of getting all SPJST insurance plan proposals computerized with pre printed proposal literature.

EDITOR SEFCIK: Editor Sefcik was given the opportunity to speak. He discussed the idea of having an SPJST Band.

SECRETARY - TREASURER MIKESKA'S NEW BUSINESS MATTERS DELINQUENT LOANS The recommendations for action on delinquent loans were approved on motion by Director Hrncir, seconded

by Director Vanek and carried unanimously.

MINUTES OF SUPREME LODGE OFFICERS' MEETINGS - The minutes of 13 officers' meetings considering investments were approved on motion by Director 13roz, seconded by Director Vavra. Motion carried unanimously.

THIRD QUARTER INVESTMENTS - The investments and loans made during the third quarter were ratified on motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded

by President Leshikar. Motion carried unanimously.

INVESTMENT POLICY - The investment policy of the Society was reviewed. No changes were recommended or made.

ANNUITY CERTIFICATE/RATES - It was decided to review the accounting and software procedures for the annuity certificate and to update the annuity program software. The motion was by Director Prochazka, seconded by Director Kohutek and it carried unanimously.

On motion by Director Prochazka, seconded by Director Vanek, the following interest rates were set: (1) The Universal Life rate was set at 9 percent annualized effective through January 31, 1989.

(2) The interest rate for the accumulation period on annuity was set at 8 percent effective through January 31, 1989.

Motion carried unanimously.

CONSERVATION OF BUSINESS New business conservation procedures were reviewed.

LOAN APPLICATION FEES - The loan application fee schedule was reviewed and Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska presented for consideration two new optional application fee schedules and approaches. After due consideration, the schedule listed as option 1 was approved effective November 1, 1988. On motion by Director Vanek, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, it carried unanimously.

LOAN COMMITMENT TERM After discussion, it was decided to eliminate the 30 - day interest lock - in extension period on our 180 - day commitments. The motion was by Director Broz, seconded by Director Vavra and it carried unanimously.

Extensions can be obtained beyond the 180 - day period, however, interest

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION LIENS - The Investment Committee decided to not require borrowers to purchase the new $50 endorsement to title policies. The action of the Investment Committee was affirmed by the Board on motion

TRANSFER OF FUNDS - On motion by Director Hrncir, seconded

by Director Broz, advance consent was given to the secretary - treasurer and the financial secretary to transfer funds from the general fund to the expense account as needed during the remainder of 1988 and during 1989.

SERVICES - Payment of the sum of $160 was authorized for computer services in connection with the indexing of the new SPJST By - Laws.

The motion was by Director Hrncir, seconded by Vice President Gebala and it carried unanimously.

Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska reported that an employee in his department, Irma Klinkovsky, with near 30 years of service was retiring effective October 15, 1988. The members of the Supreme Lodge extended appreciation to her for her many years of devoted service in the Home Office.

FINANCIAL SECRETARY MIKULAS' NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: FINANCIAL STATEMENT Selected segments of the financial statement were reviewed and discussed.

DISCOUNTS A AND B CERTIFICATES - Chairman Pokladnik relinquished the chair to Vice Chairman Vanek and Chairman Pokladnik moved that the usual discount of 25 percent on premiums be granted all members in class "A" and "B" whose certificates were in force 35 years or more and who have attained the age of 70 or more, plus an additional 25 percent discount when they attain the age of 75. The motion was seconded by Director Broz, the question was put and unanimously adopted. Chairman Pokladnik resumed chairing of the meeting.

REFUND TO LODGES - Decision on the percentage of refund to lodges was postponed until the December 2, 1988 Special Meeting.

COLLECTION OF LOCAL LODGE DUES - The Board considered a request from a local lodge for the Home Office to collect local lodge dues. It was decided to respond to the matter and suggest alternatives that could be helpful to the lodge.

NEW EQUIPMENT - Report was made that our postage mailing machine needs to be replaced. After discussion, Financial Secretary Mikulas moved and Vice President Gebala seconded that a new machine be purchased at a cost of $3,595.

Motion carried unanimously.

CERTIFICATES' INSURANCE IN FORCE - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported total certificate count currently is 53,919 with $248,489,185 of insurance in force.

President Leshikar moved and Director Kohutek seconded that lodges be authorized $50 for redesigning and changing the theme of floats no more than once annually. Motion carried unanimously.

Director Broz - He stated he appreciated the cooperation of everyone on the Board.

Director Prochazka - He reported on local matters.

Director Vanek - He expressed appreciation for those involved with the youth and discussed other suggestions for the good of the order.

After due consideration, it was agreed that in keeping with past tradition, Christmas gifts be authorized for employees, Editor and Supreme Lodge officers. The motion was by Director Vanek, seconded by Director Hrncir and it carried.

Director Hrncir - Reported that she had no new business.

Director Pokladnik - He reminded everyone of the TFC in De Soto on October 21, 22 and 23. He extended invitation to attend the Czech Day at the State Fair on October 16th.

The next regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge was set for January 9, 1989 to begin at 9 a.m.

Each lodge is eligible to have two (2) teams represent their lodge at the district playoffs. The first and second place winners in the district will represent their district at the state finals.

Honoree Ernest A. Wentrcek with his wife Billie and mother, N . lasta Wentrcek.

College Station Ernest A. Wentrcek, associate director for business affairs for the Texas Engineering Extension Service, retired September 30 following 40 years of employment with the agency.

Wentrcek was the twelfth employee hired by the Industrial Extension Service in 1948, the year the agency was established as a separate unit of the Texas A&M University System.

The agency later became the Texas Engineering Extension Service.

At a retirement reception in Wentrcek's honor, James R. Bradley, TEEX director, cited Wentrcek's accomplishments during his career.

Hired as chief clerk, Wentrcek was promoted to administrative assistant, administrative services officer and assistant director. He was named associate director for business affairs in October 1981.

At its September meeting, the Board of Regents of The Texas A&M University System approved the title of associate director for business affairs emeritus for Wentrcek, effective October 1st. The Texas Senate issued a proclamation in honor of Wentrcek's distinguished career and dedicated service to the State of Texas.

We, in the SPJST, are proud of Ernest's many accomplishments during his career at Texas A&M University. He is a long time active member of the SPJST and currently serves as president of the SPJST Lodge No. 189, Bryan - College Station and was recently re - elected to another term on the SPJST Finance Committee.

Dear Members: Lodge No. 17 held its regular monthly meeting on October 2nd with President Ben F. Trcalek, Jr. absent.

Vice President Sheila Hildebrand conducted the meeting -- nominating Debra Sebesta, acting vice president.

Susan Skrabanek reported that our volleyball team won first place at the District I meeting with Dime Box, second. Both teams will go to State on an equal basis. New Tabor won first in horseshoes (no state). We had no kolache or quilts.

Lodge No. 17 will support George (Bud) Petty as "Fraternalist of the Year."

The members voted to buy T - shirts for the volleyball team.

Gladys Hejl still needs volunteers for working the bar, especially on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

We're having Tarok practice on Wednesday nights. If you don't know how to play and would like to learn, come on out and we'd love to teach you.

We're also playing "42" on Sunday afternoons at 4:30 p.m.

Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville Dear Members: Our lodge held its monthly meeting on Sunday, October 9, 1988 at the Hallettsville Park Pavilion with President Annie Vahalik presiding.

Pledge to the flag was led by President Vahalik and Nicholas Vahalik.

Secretary Erwin Holy . read the minutes to the JulS, and August meetings. Correspondence followed.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave her usual report and also a financial report on Family Day which was held in August.

The members present then discussed District VI Fall meeting to be held Sunday, October 30th in Victoria at Leo's Feedlot Restaurant. President Annie Vahalik had information on the various contests to be held that day.

Several members plan to participate.

Our lodge and Sweet Home will register the entries for the kolache and quilt contests, with Patsy and Helen Zabransky and Gaynell Chudej assisting. Our lodge will also donate a door prize.

Election of officers for 1989 will be held at the November meeting.

The fifth annual SPJST Lodge No. 25 Barbecue Cookoff, Horseshoe and Domino Tournament was very successful. It was held on Sunday, August 28th. Johnnie Krajca was chairman of the annual event.

Barbecue cooks were there bright and early and so was Victor Trojacek overseeing the big event.

At 10 a.m., the horseshoe tournament was ready to start with Todd Newman being in charge.

Domino entries were being signed by Laure Ryan and Kenneth Holland. At 3 p.m., the game then got started.

Dancing was enjoyed by many with music being provided by a new band, The Sulak Brothers, playing polka, waltz, country and western music.

Also, for the first time at the barbecue cookoff, was a beer drinking contest. The winners were Jeff Watson and Diane Watson.

Dear Members: Lodge Karel Jonas' November monthly meeting will be held on the first Sunday, the 6th, at 2 p.m. in the lodge hall. The agenda will follow the regular "Order of Business" with the scheduled reports first, followed by a report on the District VI meeting and any new business needing attention.

There will be a fraternal gathering and luncheon after the business meeting.

Even with the appalling showing in the October monthly meeting, on the 2nd, there were four motions made and passed to take care of lodge business. All regular reports were accepted as given. Brother Albert Lupik was named "Fraternalist of the Year."

Sister Nezval won the door prize.

After the meeting, the luncheon and fraternal gathering was not dampened by the lack of attendance. Sisters Brdecka, Helen Kelner and Nezval along with Brothers Lupik and "Tony" Kelner supplemented the items furnished by the lodge.

All persons present at the luncheon helped with the clean up.

This writer learned, on October 20th, that Brother Albert Lupik, lodge secretary/treasurer was in St. Luke's Hospital in Houston, from about 2 a.m. of the 15th through the afternoon of the 19th. He is up and about now and we all wish him a speedy recovery.

An early reminder, there will be an election of lodge officers in the December 4th monthly meeting.

Lodge No. 66, Waco Dear Members: The meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. by President George Pauling.

The flags were presented by Mike Warren and Chris Pavlicek.

The Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Pledge were led by Ashley Locke.

President George Pauling called the roll of officers; those absent were Secretary and Treasurer Darlene Engelke, English Reporter Leona Nors and Guide Tommy Farbes.

We had one visitor, Blanche Lewis.

The minutes were read and approved. Sister Langlotz also read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting.

Sister Gloria Locke gave the Entertainment Committee Report.

There will be no food served in the November meeting. A change was also made for our Christmas Party, which will be held Saturday, December 3rd.

Members will meet to decorate the hall on Thursday, December 1st at 7 p.m.

Sister Locke sent a sympathy card to Jerry Swank and get well cards to George Shilling and Gladys Yates.

Sister Parma brought the dolls that Kevin Stuckley brought from Czechoslovakia. Brother Parma made stands for the dolls to be better displayed.

Sister Jeanette Smith thanked everyone who brought groceries for Caritas.

Brother Ira Niswanger was voted "Fraternalist of the Year" by acclamation.

The Volleyball Tournament is shaping up well. There will be two teams from our lodge. Sister Evelyn Seith is coaching the teams.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt made a motion to accept the transfer of David Tierce providing the paperwork comes through before October 30th and was carried.

There will be between 30 to 35 members attending District III meeting from our lodge.

The entry blanks to enter kolache in the contest at District III may be obtained from Brother George Pauling or Sister Bonnie Pruitt.

The question of the Lodge Motto wording was discussed. Brother Pauling had gone to Temple to discuss this with Brother Leshikar. It was decided our wording was fine since ours was a Lodge Pledge.

Sister Gladys Yates gave the youth club report. She encouraged the youth to go to District III and carry their Christmas ornaments. The youth won several prizes at State YAD. Many of our youth also entered exhibits at the H.O.T. Fair; they took many first and second prizes.

The New Year's Eve dance tickets are being printed. They will be $6 in advance and $7 at the door. The band playing will be 'Easy." Brother George Shilling and Sister Jeanette Smith will have charge of selling tickets.

The November meeting will be on November 20th beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The youth will meet at 1 p.m. There will be election of officers at our lodge meeting.

Door prize was won by Patty Neslony.

Those having birthdays were Rose Galler and Ron Williams. The birthday cake was brought by Justin Engelke.

The meeting adjourned at 3:25 p.m.

Dear Members: This is a special notice and invitation to our Holiday Bake Sale on November 19th at Rudolph's Market at 2924 Elm Street in Dallas. Wednesday, November 2, 1988—VESTNIK/11 to Dona Hubenak and Betty Billington for the quilt. Betty donated all the material and Dona pieced and quilted it, it really was a beautiful quilt. The donations were good for the quilt and the winner was Steve Thompson. Dona thanked all ladies who worked in the booth and for all the donations to the booth.

Sunshine Chairman Lilly McMillen reported sending sympathy cards to Albert Kubala and Louise Oujesky.

We express our sincere sympathy to these families on the loss of their brother.

The door prize was won by Joyce Tesar.

Our interesting story was told by Frances Blake about her parents. They went to school together and, in later years after they were married, they came to this country. Times were hard then so for their children to have toys, they had to make them. They made wooden shoes and toys and also a merry - go - round. They had to be smart and artistic to do all of that.

My humble apology to Dona Hubenak for omitting her name off the September birthday list.

Our October birthday celebrities were Mary Chihacek, Ima Lou LaPlant, Denise Rosenlund, Louise Oujesky, Mary Palachek, Roberta Peters, Sharon Gibson, Bill Kosarek and Frank Tesar. Hope all of you had a very nice birthday.

On November 8th, there will be NO regular meeting because we are going out to eat at the Spaghetti Warehouse, 600 E. Exchange on northside and those, who prefer to meet at Lodge 92, be there at 10:30 a.m., otherwise meet the rest of us at the restaurant.

Chapter No. Ft. Worth

Dear Members: All of you are urged to attend the meeting of Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association (SVPS) Chapter No. 9 on November 6th. It will be at the Sokol Athletic Center, 6500 Boat Club Road.

The officers will give their reports and items pertaining to insurance will be discussed.

Election of officers for the coming year will also take place at this meeting.

Remember, too, that at each meeting, three money prizes of $25 each are given to the lucky persons whose names are drawn; only the members are eligible, of course.

The ladies are asked to please bring pastries to go with the meat which will be provided by the local chapter.

We would like to express our sympathy to the family of Jack Holtendorf who passed away on September 23rd. He and his wife, Monalu, attended most of our meetings and he will be missed.

On October 8th, all of us attended the 50th anniversary of the opening of the hall of SPJST Lodge 92 and it was a big success. Everyone had a great time. Lodge 92 has had insurance with Chapter No. 9 for quite a long time and we congratulate them.

There was a large attendance at the last meeting so all of you plan to attend this one, too. See you then!

Spark

Plugs Just Start Things

You can ask any mechanic who knows anything about engines, and they will say that plugs just start things in the engine.

One tiny spark sets off the engine. If the carburetor isn't working, that spark is wasted. If the valves are stuck, that spark is wasted. If a tire is flat, that spark is wasted.

One tiny spark starts it all, but without the rest of the car working with that spark plug, that spark is wasted.

At the XXV SPJST Convention, an office on the district and local lodge level was made optional. That office is the FAC. The Fraternal Activities Coordinator is the spark plug of your local lodge. Without your support, as a member, that spark will be wasted.

In an earlier Vestnik article, I was called a genius of organization. My good friend and the only man I know of in the SPJST to hold a PhD in Taroks, Tim Reese, wrote that article.

I wish to thank Tim for the praise he lavished on me and would like to respond "It takes one to know one."

But without the support I get from my family and members of my lodge and even those who don't agree with me, my job would be twice as difficult.

In short, what I'm trying to say is support your FAC in your local lodge.

You may not agree with everything the FAC is doing, but at least a different idea or option is participation and not apathy.

Agree or disagree, but help that spark not to be wasted. Don't, as a member, become a broken carburetor, a stuck valve, or a flat tire for your local lodge's sake.

From The State Youth Director SPJST Youth Perform For Texas Fraternal Congress Youth Spectacular Youth Scrapbook And Poster Contest (Photos On Page 7)

Holiday Inn, DeSoto, was the, site for the 1988 Texas Fraternal Congress meeting. There was a record crowd of over 250 to view talent from the seven participating fraternals. King Daryl Kortis and Queen Marcy Dorotik did an outstanding job in delivering their State YAD winning speeches and emceeing the youth spectacular program.

Talent representing SPJST was: Devin and Derek Koehler of Lodge 185, New Braunfels, singing 'We Came To This Country" Samantha Lundy and Tanya Haynie of Lodge 74, Lovelady, with their clogging routine to "Mickey" Leslie Barnes of Lodge 84, Dallas, with her performance from "My Fair Lady" Lenice Kaspar, Misty Novak, Valerie Roye and Jeanine Dorotik with their dance routine to "La Bamba."

Immediately following the youth banquet, the winners of the Texas Fraternal Congress Scrapbook and Poster Contests were announced.

From The SPJST State King Saturday, October 22nd, State Queen Marcy Dorotik and I appeared and emceed the Youth Spectacular at the 88th Annual Texas Fraternal Congress Convention at the Holiday Inn in DeSoto, a suburb of Dallas.

There were seven fraternal organizations performing talents and musicals at the program. The program started at 4:30 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m., the Fraternal Congress held their banquet.- Before the meal, I gave a thought for the day, "Tell Him So" and Marcy Dorotik gave the Blessings before the meal.

After the meal, the winners of the Posters and Scrapbooks were announced. Out of the seven organizations, SPJST took first,

second and third places in the Poster and Scrapbook Awards. Thanks for the jobs well done. Thanks to our State Youth Director Claudette Reese for all of her support to the youth organization.

Also, a special thank you to my Youth Club Leader Patsy Koslovsky, my parents, my younger brothers, SL President Howard Leshikar, Tim, Claudette and Jason Reese and everyone else for their support on this special day. (Melanie) After the banquet, there was a live band playing for the entertainment and dance, but I think all of the youth decided to go to the pool or the game room instead. I think everyone there had a great time.

I want to say a word to Tim Reese and SL President Howard Leshikar. I hope we can go out and have a great meal like the one served, especially the green beans.

I hope to see all of you at the State Volleyball Tournament on November 5th in Temple, Texas.

Lodge 88 Youth Club Discuss Many Activities Dear Readers, On Wednesday, October 5, 1988 beginning at 7:30 p.m., the Lodge No. 88, Houston Youth Club meeting was called to order by President Darlene Migl.

The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America led by Substitute Sergeant - at - Arms Tommie Wallace.

Following the pledge, youth members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for the peace and good of our members.

Our president then asked for the roll call of officers by Secretary Michelle Linney. There were four officers present, namely, Darlene Migl, Crystal Wallace, Marlene Migl and Michelle Linney; the two absent were Sergeant at - Arms Kevin Faske and Reporter Paul Groendes. Substitute Sergeant at - Arms Tommie Wallace took Kevin's place, and Paul's sister, Cindy Groendes, took notes for Paul to write a letter.

Then the secretary read the committee chairmen's roll call; only two were present, namely, Tommie Wallace and Cindy Gorendes. The committee chairmen absent were Clint Vick (get well), Paul Pflughaupt (membership), Wesley Faske (refreshments), and Brian Havemann (social). Adults present were Assistant Youth Leader Mrs. Groendes, parents -- Mr. Clayton, Mr. Gloria, Mrs. Havemann and Assistant DYC Nancy Steubing. There was a total of 18 youth club members and 2 guests, Julie Clayton who will soon become a new member and Erin Cravey.

The secretary then read the minutes of our September 7, 1988 meeting.

There was one correction; it was changed from .`Christine Porter was a guest," to "Christine Porter was welcomed as a new member."

Our secretary read two letters of correspondence; the first one was about Darlene Migl winning second place at State YAD in the Special Category and she was asked to have her winning picture placed at Temple Junior College; next, there was a letter concerning our Scrapbook and Publicity Poster at the Texas Fraternal Congress. The letter mentioned our club receiving $20 for entering it.

Next, Treasurer Marlene Migl read her report. She told members about people like Crystal Wallace, Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, Michelle Linney, Angela Clayton and Cindy Groendes picking up cans during Thursday nights. She also told all members who have not paid dues that they must do so. No financial report for September was known; Mrs. Linney could not be at the meeting.

Visitors Julie Clayton and Erin Cravey were introduced. Julie Clayton came to the meeting in September and is going to join the club. Erin is 5 years old and attends St. Rose of Lima in kindergarden. She was brought as a guest with Crystal and Tommie Wallace. There were no new members.

Vice President Crystal Wallace had no report for the month.

The president then asked for all committee reports. Even among the committee chairmen, there were no reports except that there were refreshments following our meeting.

Under old business, we discussed the District V Meeting and Family Day on September 18, 1988 at 3:30 p.m. It was mentioned that there was discussion of

Astroworld and Camp. The Astroworld Day was rescheduled to October 15 and camp will be shared with District VII next year; their DYC is Maxine Pavliska. Everyone is really looking forward to camping with this different district. Finally, it was said that anyone 15 - 17 would be an LIT at camp whether they attend LIT Retreat or not. Also, anyone age 14 would be a Junior LIT. New business was the kitchen sales on Thursday nights. Scheduled for October 6 from Lodge 88 were members Crystal Wallace, Cindy Groendes, Julie Clayton and Tommie Wallace; for October 13 -- Michelle Linney, Marlene Migl, Darlene Migl, Crystal Wallace, Julio Gloria Angela Gloria, Jason Michalak and Lindsey Michalak; for October 20 -- Michelle Linney, Darlene and Marlene Migl, Lindsey and Jason Michalak, Jamie Meyer and Crystal Wallace. Finally, scheduled for October 27 were Crystal Wallace, Michelle Linney, Marlene and Darlene Migl, Julio and Angela Gloria. President Darlene Migl told all to bring spoons, crock pots and thongs with them on Thursdays.

All preceding business dealt with the district, but the following centers on the youth club at Lodge 88.

For October our social will be a Halloween Party; the date will be announced in the newsletters to be sent out. Everyone was reminded of our charity project and bake sales.

Finally, they were to turn in their ornaments for the Ornament Contest.

We ended the meeting by reciting the SPJST Youth Club Pledge and singing the Fraternity Song. Afterwards, we sang "Happy Birthday" to all October birthday members; only one member celebrates their birthday in October and that was Melissa Flores. We also sang to Mr. Gloria.

The meeting was adjourned by Darlene Migl and all sang songs and had refreshments.

I would just like to remind all of you that we are going to take all necessary pictures for the Scrapbook next month; that includes a group picture.

Our next meeting will be November 2, 1988 at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Members, The October 16, 1988 meeting of Lodge No. 66 Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. by Michael Warren.

Ron Williams led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 20 members and 8 adults present. The minutes were read and approved.

The old business is that we are going to District III meeting on October 30th and we need to register between 10 and 11 a.m. We're going to Temple to the SPJST Library and Museum; we are to meet at Elite Cafe parking lot on Monday, October 24th at 6 p.m.

The new business for this month is that we need - to get a postcard for David who has cancer, and is trying to get in the Guiness World Book of Records, for the most postcards.

We're having a party -- a Halloween Party, it's on Saturday, October 29th at 4 p.m.

Box YC's Halloween Meeting Dime

Dear Readers, The Dime Box Youth Club of Lodge No. 13 held its last monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 19th, at 6:30 p.m. President Scott Whitsel called the meeting to order.

The flag bearer of the month was Wendy Reeves.

Secretary Trudy Krenek called the roll and read the minutes of our last meeting. There were 24 members and 18 visitors present.

Treasurer Jennifer Gold then gave the treasurer's report.

We discussed having our fund raiser dance on Friday, November 4th; that same night, Dime Box has a basketball game, so everyone is invited to attend.

Susan Spacek then told all the members thank you for the flowers she received from our youth while in the hospital.

We also enjoyed a scavenger hunt and a Halloween Party which was a lot of fun. Thank you to Doris and LaDonna Ford for the effort in the party and all the Moms and Dads who helped.

Events Dear Readers, Lodge No. 39 Youth Club had a very busy weekend by helping the adults with the Czech Festival held at the lodge home and also by having game booths as our fund - raiser. I was in charge of the face painting booth, which was a new experience.

Dear Readers, On October 13, 1988, the youth club of District V sold food in the-kitchen at Lodge 88 during games for the second consecutive Thursday. This time there were members from Lodges 88 and 142. From Lodge 88 members present were Crystal Wallace, Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, Michelle Linney, Tommie Wallace, Cindy Groendes, Lindsey Michalak, Jason Michalak, Julio Gloria and Angela Gloria. From Lodge 142 members present were Amanda Hermis and Jason Hermis.

Adults present were DYC Marie Stayton, Assistant DYC Nancy Steubing, Lodge 88 Youth Leader Barbara Linney, Lodge 88 Assistant Youth Leader Lou Groendes, Lodge 142 Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis, and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Gloria.

Also, that night the Lodge 88 Youth Club held a bake sale; lemon pie was the big attraction. Auctioning a cake to the games' players brought in $11 to our funds.

I will, again, say thanks to all those who support the youth club by buying things from us this way. Also, I would like to remind the youth club that if you do not help in a majority of the fund - raising activities, you will not be eligible to go with everyone else on the San Antonio express trip.

So all those responsible for coming to work any Thursday soon must remember to bring thongs, crock pots, large spoons and, especially, aprons!

Lodge 39 Youth Prepare For Holiday Parade

Dear Readers, The youth club of Lodge No. 39, Bryan, had their fund - raiser this past weekend by having game booths and face painting at the Lodge's Czech Festival. We had a good turnout and we also had to work hard but had fun doing it. I was in charge of the "penny pitch" booth.

Our next big project will be our float for the Holiday Parade. I can't wait because I know it will be a lot of fun.

Our District I Queen and King will be riding on the float with us.
