that they can get in touch with them. *** The golden observance of Lodge Czechoslovan No. 92 home building. in Fort Worth left an impression of fond memories while celebrating its anniversary that was well planned and prepared by their officers, members and close friends from near and far.

Fifty years is a long time to review the good and bad days of their building's existence, however, from all indications, the numerous improvements and increase in membership indicates that its membership is proud of what their charter members handed down to them to perpetuate.

From early hours of the day until

midnight, activities were taking place to entertain those who attended, including Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and his wife, Mary.

As mentioned before many fond memories brought to this writer's attention, especially knowing well that Lodge No. 92 hosted the SPJST Convention in 1948 and Lodge No. 88 was invited to stage a Czech production by Dramatic Club "Hlahol," which really brought a lot of laughter. (Those were the good old days.)

Lodge No. 92 values its young and old members whether inactive or active. They have a very active Ladies Circle affiliation that has been in existence for many years which meets every month and they perform benevolent duties and contribute to various charitable organizations. Their youth club has been re - activated and continues to function under the leadership of Gordon and Cheryl Hubenak. The lodge's records indicate that three of their senior lodge members were recipients who outlived their life certificate at the grand age of 96; namely Mary Tomascik, Helen Zich and Anna Days. (Incidentally, Sister Helen Zich was Brother Carl Zich's mother, who is a reporter for Lodge No. 92.)

There's no doubt that the festivities were enjoyed by those attending, and Lodge No. 92 members are to be congratulated for their accomplishments and to be an asset to our SPJST Society. *** Friday, October 28th is the 70th anniversary of the Foundation of the Independence of Czechoslovakia and their Declaration of Independence October 28, 1918. For the first time in hundreds of years, the Czech, Moravian and Slovak people had a country they could call their own and be out from under the rule of the Hapsburg Monarchy composed of Austro - Hungarian - German rulers.

Of course, 20 years later Hitler's Nazi army occupied the nation and many Czech, 'Moravian and Slovak people were killed in the army and concentration camps, the lovely little town of Lidice was obliterated from the face of the land and, at war's end in 1945, the country retained its borders to be a country among the other nations of the world; may those borders remain. *** If your little tax exemption turns 2 years old next year, you must get the toddler a Social Security number (SSN) or risk a $5 tax penalty and audit from the Internal Revenue Service. Among some tax provisions tucked into the Welfare Reform Act, just signed by President Reagan, is a change that lowers from 5 to 2 the age at which a child listed on a parent's tax return will need an SSN. The law, which applies to 1989 returns filed in 1990, is expected to curtail such abuses as divorced parents both claiming the same child as a dependent. Uncle Sam may disallow your exemption if you fail to supply a number after being asked. Under a second change, working parents will be eligible for a child - care tax credit only if their kids are under age 13 instead of the current limit of 15. Expenses covered are capped at $2,400 for one child and $4,800 for two or more. You can write off 30 percent of these amounts if your income is $10,000 or less, and 20 percent if you earn more than $28,000, so total credits range from $480 to $1,440. Because the IRS is cracking down on off the books and phantom payments, you also must list the name, address and SSN of your care giver.

SPJST First Annual Volleyball Tournament The Supreme Lodge Board has approved the First Annual SPJST Volleyball Tournament for members 16 and over.

Each lodge is eligible to have two (2) teams represent theic lodge at the district playoffs. The first and second place winners in the district will represent their district at the state finals.

Contact your local lodge officer about setting up a team for your lodge.

Teams must notify the District Youth

Counselor of their entry in the tournament. The District Youth Counselor will be the coordinator for their respective district.

The State Tournament will be held November 5, 1988 in Temple.

There will be prizes given at the district and the state level.

2. Tournament advancement will be from local lodge, to district playoff, to state tournament.

3. Two teams will be eligible from each lodge to compete on the district level.

4. Top two teams from the district playoff will advance to the state tournament.

5. District Youth Counselors and/or Assistant DYC will be in charge of the district playoff.

6. Players must be sixteen by the date set for the local lodge tournament.

7. Prizes -- Local Lodge: To be provided at local lodge discretion.

District Level: First Place Team $25 plus Lodge Trophy; Second Place Team - $15 plus Plaque State Level: First Place Team $50 plus Lodge Trophy; Second Place Team - $40 plus Plaque; Third Place Team - $30 plus Plaque.

SPJST VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT Rules that will be adhered to for the 1988 SPJST Co - ed Volleyball Tournament.

1. Teams' regular playing roster shall not exceed 12 players including a playing manager.

2. The six players will include no less than 2 women.

3. Intentional direct spikes will not be allowed. (Intentional direct spikes will be called at the judgment of the referee) 4. When the ball is played more than once by a team, at least one of the contacts shall be made by a female player. Contact of the ball during blocking shall not constitute playing the ball. There is no requirement for a male player to contact the ball, regardless of the number of contacts by the team.

Dear Fellow District VI Members: This year's district social and meeting will be held on October 30 at Leo's Restaurant located at Victoria Regional Airport.

Registration will begin at 11 p.m.

The serving of the free catered meal will begin at 12 noon.

The short meeting will be called to order at 1:05 p.m, followed by the Presentation of Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance.

The welcome will be by Lodge No. 32 President with the response by District VI 1st Vice President.

A tribute to our deceased members will be read by District VI 2nd Vice President. A candle will be lit during that time.

The SPJST Motto will be read by the District VI Youth Counselor, members are to shake hands with their neighbors at that time.

The DYC will then give a short report on District VI Royalty.

District VI Holds Seminars Recently SFR Jerome Hlavaty held dinner and seminars at Hallettsville and El Campo along with District VI Director Matt Vanek for the active sales representatives in District VI. Of the twenty - two producing sales representatives in District VI, twenty one were in attendance at these seminars. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us aboard the SPJST train. We are moving on to bigger and better things -- "Don't be left behind."

It is the lodge's and members' duty to support the sales representatives of your lodge and to help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood On Sunday, October 2nd, the Lodge No. 6 meeting came to order at 1 p.m. starting with the pledge to the flag led

by Keith Hykel and Sharon Hrabal.

SPJST Motto was read by Keith Hykel.

Twenty - nine members and two guests present were reported by the flag bearer.

Reports of all officers were all approved as given.

There was no Board of Trustees' meeting in September due to the hall being rented.

Sympathy cards were sent to the Joseph Stiborek family and Christine and Henry Matus (mother of Christine and Henry Matus's sister who passed away.)

Other items were the presentation of scholarships by President Johnnie Krizan to our young members who graduated from high schools, namely Danny Mynar, son of Bennie and Lillie Marie Mynar; Miss Deana Snider, daughter of Dean and Marie Snider; Melissa Mynar, daughter of Marvin and Rose Mynar, Shirley Dobecka, daughter of Robert and Lydia Dobecka; these scholarships were presented in honor of the Theresa Dobecka Fund.

The next report was given by Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz who spoke of the few youth club members and their parents attending Six Flags on Sunday, September 18 and how they enjoyed the day. She also talked about some of the club members who are working on Christmas ornaments and there will be a Halloween Party on Friday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the lodge hall, also all are invited to come and have fun. A best - dressed contest will be held.

The president then recognized Eddie Ray Hrabal and his wife, Veronica for cooking a delicious dinner for all of us;

Under new business, a discussion about the next Appreciation Day for all the workers who worked at our picnic and Westfest and some other work that was done around our lodgehall. It was decided to set the date later.

Our next Board of Trustees' meeting will be held Friday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Lodge 6 meeting will be Sunday, November 13 at 1 p.m.

Now, it was door prize time for today's winner -- Georgia Soukup who was present.

The progressive prize of $10 was Eula Mae Hanzlicek, second of $10 was Walter Krizan, Sr. and for $6 name drawn was Edward J. Marek; none of these three members was present.

Dear Members: President Leslie Sakewitz opened the regular Lodge No. 15 meeting by leading our members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Brother Leslie then welcomed guests Dan Balusek, Thomas Harvell and Lilly Zajicek. We were happy to have you all and please come again.

"Happy Birthday" was wished to Dan Balusek. Happy Anniversary was then wished to Ann and Dan Balusek; this was their 16th anniversary, we hope you two have a lot more.

40 October Meeting

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 40, El Campo - Hillje was held on Monday, October 17, 1988, following games.

The meeting was called to order by President Rita Vanek. Pledge of Allegiance was led by Youth Member Kim Kacal, followed by a moment of silent prayer for deceased and sick members.

Roll call of officers found all officers present except Trustee James Kulcak. Trustee Albert Kresta and Mrs. Kresta were present after about a year's absence because of illness -welcome back Brother and Sister Kresta. We missed you!

Minutes of previous meeting were read and approved and all correspondence read.

The lodge accepted and welcomed new members Shirley A. Faykus and Courtney Lynn Tupa.

Treasurer's report was given by Treasurer Madeline Shimek.

First Vice President Bennie Reck reported bookings for the hall for 1989.

Second Vice President Dora Lee Kopecky reported that Wednesday, November 6, 1988 would be the date for election and installation of officers, with a catered dinner to follow. Reservations should be made

by Friday, November 12th. Call Dora Lee at 543 - 4865 or Madeline Shimek at 543 - 8148 (Home) or 543 - 5295 (Office).

Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek reported the youth club made Halloween craft for the nursing home.

The following contributions were approved:

1. Cost of two $50 Savings Bonds to area adult workshop for prizes for Fund Drive; 2. $200 to Wharton - Matagorda County Child Protective Services (Department of Human Resources); 3. $350 to Memorial Hospital of El Campo toward fund for purchase of new grill in kitchen; 4. $200 to Narcotic Dog Fund.

No. 47, Seaton Meeting

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Lodge No. 47 meeting was held on Sunday, October 2 at 2 p.m. with President Jerry Pechal calling the meeting to order.

Flag Bearers' Lori Greger and Erin Skrabanek brought in the flags and led the pledge.

President Pechal welcomed everyone and recognized our visitors, Ann Balusek, Calvin Schiller, Freddie Schroeder and Joe Macek; be making plans to pay us another visit again.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers and trustees and also the lodge's sales representatives.

Minutes of our September 1st lodge meeting were read and approved.

The only correspondence received and read was the letter from SL President Howard Leshikar regarding the nomination of Fraternalist of the Year before November 1st.

The members on the sick list during the month included Joe Marinik, Edward Mihatsch, Melanie Koslovsky and Woodrow Chervenka, deceased since the meeting. We just learned that Brother Ernest Pfeiffer is hospitalized after surgery. Get well wishes for those convalescing and may you regain your health again.

Members accepted into the lodge were Herbert Daniel Holt, Shirley A. Holt, Tamera Lea Holt, Tonja Lee Holt, William Daniel Holt, Lori Renee Zalkovsky, Bryan James. Zalkovsky, Beverly Diane Zalkovsky and Jeanette Marie Zalkovsky. Transferee in was Anna Joyce Mundell from Lodge No. 87, Temple. A warm welcome to each of those named and thanks for joining our lodge family.

The usual reports of the officers and chairpersons were heard and board minutes were also read.

Brother Willie E. Kohutek gave a report on the fall meeting held in Elgin on September 25th. Our lodge had the largest attendance with 72 members and we brought 2 visitors, Verle and Mary Ballard from Flint, Michigan who really enjoyed the meeting and fun carnival. The three quilt winners were all from Lodge No. 47, namely, Martha Dubcak, Evelyn Heese and Vallie Tupy; also 4 of the 7 entered Christmas Tree ornament prizes were our youth club. Those quilts and

ornaments were all so nice.

Congratulations to the winners!

Brother Frank Klinkovsky also commented on the fall meeting and the fine time everyone had and the good meal each enjoyed. He also made a motion for the board to set the amount to prorate to groups advertising for Lodge No. 47.

Sister Patsy Koslovsky gave her youth leader's report -- 32 members, 7 visitors and 3 guests. They are sponsoring an after - the - game dance on Friday, October 28 with Charles Mikeska and the "Sensations" playing modern, country and western music for all ages. NO ALCOHOL will be sold for this dance and the kitchen will be open as usual.

The president and vice president appointed Adeline Kohutek, Dorothy Pechal and Woodrow Marek to go through the register rosters for the past year to check the eligibility of all members attending meetings before the election of officers for 1989.

Brother Woodrow Marek, chairman of the Rules and Regulations, read the proposed changes for 1989 and these were adopted and in effect January 1, 1989.

Brother F.E. Hejl was nominated as the Fraternalist of the Year for 1988 for our lodge. Good luck, Brother Frank!

Birthdays will be celebrated by Brothers Dan Balusek, Louis Kohutek, Joe Macek, Frank Janacek and Sister Ruth Janacek in this month; and Brother Dan and Sister Ann Balusek, Brother Robert and Sister Evelyn Heese, Brother Edward and Sister Lucy Mihatsch are observing wedding anniversaries in October. Have a "very special day!" and many, many more.

Brother Buford and Sister Roberta Chappell were recognized as being at a lodge meeting for the first time; come again.

The attendance at our meeting was 82 members and 4 visitors. Door prize winners were Evelyn Heese and Jimmy Schroeder.

The next meeting will be held Sunday, November 6,at 1 p.m. since this is the annual meeting when the officers are elected for the next year, therefore the time is changed.

I hope Editor Sefcik and Sister Sefcik can read this report because I crushed a finger on the right hand in the pickup door. You don't know how it affects the writing until it really happens to you.

Dates to Remember: After - the game dance Friday, October 28; Halloween costume judging, haunted house and hayride on Sundry, October 30, from 5 to 9:30 p.m. (Hamburgers and French fries will be served from 5 to 7:30 p.m.); and the lodge meeting on Sunday, November 6th.

49 To Host District IV Family Day

Lodge

SPJST District IV Family Day will be held Saturday, October 29, 1988 in Rowena, Texas in SPJST Lodge No. 49 Hall.

Registration will start at 12:00 p.m.

All family members of the ten lodges within the district are cordially invited to participate in the activities of this fun day.

There will be horseshoe and washer pitching, card and domino playing, sweets and novelty games and musical entertainment. There will be door prizes.

The ladies of Lodge No. 49 will bake kolache on Thursday, October 27th, so there will be plenty of delicious kolache filled with a variety of fruits to choose from. The evening meal will consist of cold cuts and fresh kolache.

On October 10, we had our monthly meeting with the regular attendance.

We do hope soon our attendance will pick up. Don't forget the annual meeting on Sunday, December 11, which is so important because this is the day the officers will be elected for 1989.

President Jerry Ermis opened the meeting with Crystal Wallace presenting the flag and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present except Sergeant - at - Arms Frank Tilich who has been sick with a bad cold, but is better by now. President Jerry appointed King B. Hegwood to replace Frank.

Secretary Carolyn Sager read the minutes, which were approved as read.

President Ermis reviewed the Czech Day event again. We are looking for a large crowd that day, especially if we keep on having such beautiful weather.

Below is the program agenda for Czech Day. 12:30 -- Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Director Kovanda 2:00 -- Presentation of Colors by Crystal Wallace, Paul Groendes and Marlene Migl Czech and National Anthems by Helen Hegwood Welcome -- President Jerry Ermis 2:15 -- Proclamation from Mayor by Marceil Malak 2:30 -- Choral Group under the direction of Director Tim Kostom 3:00 -- Slovaine American Club Dancers 3:30 -- Rhythm Cloggers 4:00 -- Closing President Jerry Ermis then called on 2nd Vice President Pearl Hanka to give her report. President Ermis had gotten a letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar to appoint a committee for the Fraternalist of the Year Award. Micky Rice and Pearl Hanka were appointed for the committee, which I'm presenting to the members with our recommendation that we nominate Tim S. Kostom. The nomination was seconded without any opposition.

At this time Johnnie Kosut made a motion to make Frances Olexa an Honorary President, seconded by

Wednesday, October 26, 1988—VESTNIK/7 Mary Kosut. It was passed by unanimous vote.

Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox gave a report for his group. He remarked that he was so glad to be back. He thanked Bennie Kocich, Gene Barcak and Milert Antrich and, of course, all his committee who kept the "act" going. He also gave special thanks to Shirley in the office, who takes care of the reservations. Harley was pleased with the net profit in September. The special dances of October are on the little blue schedule in the lobby and on the beautiful bulletin board which Kathy Trefell always keeps up to date and also on page 15 in the Vestnik.

Manny Green played October 8 with Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler in charge with Era Richards, John Cometa and Lee and Eloise Flores assisting. Everybody was dressed beautifully which added to the dance.

The Blue Room Party is well underway for December 18th. By then we should all be in the Christmas spirit. The deadline for tickets is December 1, so make your reservations and buy your tickets by then. The time is 4 to 9 p.m. The meal will be catered, and drinks and dance are included for $10 per person. You'll not want to miss the next one.

Lillie Spies announced for the Birthday Club in the absence of Kathy Trefell. She asked for Czech Day pastry. She said she didn't want to run out of pastry too soon, so double up.

President of the Men's Club Ed Miculka gave his report. This is a vibrant group of men who are planning a Cleanup Day next week, so all of you who are able, help Ed clean up the grounds for Czech Day. Vice Chairman Royal Warnasch gave the Board of Trustees' report since Board Chairman Bobby Miksch was absent. Royal always starts out with an amusing story and keeps everybody in stitches, but its medicine that relaxes you. He reported on what was done in September. The main subject is the Building Committee who are all board members. Tim Kostom, the chairman, asked Karl Lindemann, Royal Warnasch, A.J. Stayton and Henry Kite to come forward with the architectural drawings so they could be displayed for the membership.

There are always many questions so this is easier to understand.

DYC Marie Stayton and Youth Leader Barbara Linney gave short reports on some of their plans. The youths will have a garage sale in the near future so you might put things aside to give them. If you read those nice letters from Lodge 88 youth reporters, they will let you know when.

Bill Malina asked to speak for a minute. He was commenting about so many of our members who traveled to Europe this past year so he arranged to have a session where the travelers will share their experiences with the rest of us on November 5 at 5 p.m.

Louis Hanus, Homer Alexander, District V Director Jerry Prochazka and Mary Kosut gave some short reports; also Mrs. Kathy Jolly, secretary of the Czech Concert Orchestra, announced they were going to Dallas on October 16 to the State Fair and thanked the Board for making it possible for them to go by bus.

Several months ago, the officers of Lodge 88 had the pleasure of presenting a corsage and certificate to Mrs. Helen Korinek, who turned 96 on July 9, 1988. She resided at Golden Age Manor Nursing Home in Houston. On October 3, 1988, she

passed away. Her survivors were son, Wm. J. Korinek and daughter, Helen Patterson, both from Houston, 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Service was in the Trinity Lutheran Church, Houston and burial in Highlands, Texas. The Resolution Committee of Lodge 88 wishes to express sincere sympathy and comfort on behalf of our entire membership to the family.

Miss Elaine Annette Gerlich and Mr. Maximiliano Victor O'Canas were united in marriage on Saturday, October 2, 1988 at 2:30 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Houston.

The Monsignor Hubert "Tiger" Janak performed the ceremony. Ceremonial songs were "The Wedding Song," "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Evergreen." The reception „followed at the SPJST Lodge 88 with music provided by Donny Wavra and the Hi - Liters.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Gerlich, Sr. of Houston.

The groom is the son of Mrs. Rebecca O'Canas and the late Mr. Ben O'Canas of LaJunta, Colorado.

Matron of Honor was Janet Wells.

Maid of Honor was Elizabeth Gerlich.

Bridesmaids included Lisa Rubalcava, Karen Dohman and Angela Jiminez.

Shonna Kay Ebert was flower girl.

Anthony O'Canas served as best man. Groomsmen included Leo O'Canas, Dan O'Canas, Albert O'Canas and Alfred 0 'Canas. Ushers were Edwin A. Gerlich, Jr. and Gary Blahuta. Stephen Gonzales and Kyle "Butterball" Gerlich were ring bearers.

Both the bride and groom are employed with the U.S. government.

Following a surprise "honeymoon" trip for the bride, the couple will reside in Phoenix, Arizona.

On October 8, 1988 many members and friends started coming to the hall for a full day of activities. There were tents set up outside in the parking lot and a big space walk balloon, small buggy pulled by ponies, tables of old items and pictures of Lodge 92 officers who helped build our lodge hall in 1937 which was completed in 1938.

There were also group pictures of all who attended the first opening and some of the young are the ones who are officers and are carrying out what our parents started.

It was nice to see so many ladies with "krojs" and men with vests all embroidered with pretty colors Some of the ladies came from other lodges: West, Waco, Dallas, Burleson, Arlington and I am sure there were others I might have missed, but we really enjoyed having all of them present. There were small girls with krojs (costumes) that the grandmothers made for them and were proud of them. They looked so sweet in their small costumes. I hope when they grow older, they will make larger ones to wear on occasions that pertain to our Czech heritage.

The Ladies' Circle had a booth, so lid the youth club and all had some kind of things to sell. There were large lapel buttons being made with anything you wanted on them; some had 0 Czech, 100 Czech, and some had funny words on them. Cotton candy was made by Youth Leader Gordon Hubenak who claims it isn't too easy to make cotton candy, but when I saw them being made his hand looked good enough to eat.

The Planning Committee consisted of Chairperson Clara Cohen, Martha Durham, Jo Ella Kubala, Al Kercho, Kenneth Krivanek, Gordon Hubenak, Joyce and Frankie Tesar. (Brother Dan Kubala was also on the committee, however Brother Dan had

There were many others who also had to help in different places such as selling admission tickets and meal tickets, namely, Helen Kubala, Esta Belle Hubenak, Frank Tesar, Louis Kubala, Christine Zich, Albert Kubala, Jimmie Greer, Evelyn Spacek, Florence Greer, Liz Howard, Ann Schindler and Carl W. Zich. There were many more but I will get them next time.

The activities started at 10 a.m., many members were there at 8 a.m. to get things in order. The food was catered by a very good company named Riskey Bar - B - Que and the meat was very tender and lean, also the sausage was very tasty. Everyone enjoyed the meal and bragged on it.

When a meal is catered, the members can enjoy it better, also no dishes or pans to wish; this way, when the ladies

were dressed nicely, they didn't have to get dirty.

The Jodie Mikula Band. from Ennis played in the afternoon to a full house. The Parade of Costumes took place in between the two bands. There were many "krojs" that were so beautiful, in fact, some were authentic from Czechoslovakia and many other krojs were handmade by the ladies; to me, all of the costume participants should have won a prize!

There were no speeches, but we did introduce our Supreme Lodge President Brother Howard Leshikar and his wife, Mary; also Sister Maxine Sefcik was introduced. She is very nice and took pictures, so I hope all of them turn out fine. (Lodge No. 92 always tries to be a good host when there is something at the hall. We hope everyone was pleased.)

Beginning at 8 p.m., the Harold Strand Orchestra started playing and,

gain, there was a full house. Waltzes, Iolkas, ballroom and fun dances were liked by the dancing fans. That was he first time I had heard the bird song :ailed "The Colonel Sanders" dance.

Harold kept many people on the dance floor with his smooth music.

Lodge No. 92 wants to thank all of those who brought cakes for the cake walk and other items which made this occasion something to be proud of.

Our lodge appreciates all the members and friends who helped make this 50 year celebration something to remember for a long time.

The parking lot is large and topped; one of the regular ballroom dancers made it look nice with a large machine brought out to clean the lot which was donated free of charge and the firm's name is Property Maintenance Company of Hurst, Texas. They also cleaned after our celebration so the members thank this man very much.

Our dear Mary Cecelia Krivanek opened the program by singing "America the Beautiful" and Kde Domov Muj" (the Czech national anthem). Later in the program, she again, sang "Daddy's Hands," accompanied on the piano by Jo Ann (Hubenak) Hixson who also played for the Parade of Costumes.

The hall was decorated very pretty which is always done by Joyce and Frankie Tesar who are managers of National Hall. The new remodeled kitchen and bar area looked so nice and all liked the looks of the change that was done. The floor was refinished and good to dance on. I, myself, and the rest of us couldn't find any faults in this change on the inside of our hall.

The day was very good except for a little rain shower that didn't last long, which had no effect on the crowd; it only cooled off a little. Everyone seemed pleased with smiling faces, so we hope we made many happy people at this celebration.

Next time, I will explain more and hope many of you attend the dances that are scheduled. Look in the SPJST Vestnik Calendar.

Lodge members and friends, we thank all of you who helped make this a day to remember for a long time.

After Vincent Hechler, president, called the October 12, meeting to order, Secretary Tommie Lostak read the minutes of the August meeting.

The lodge did not meet in September because of the possibility of Hurricane Gilbert coming our way and everyone was busy taking precautionary measures.

Secretary - Treasurer Helen Filipp then gave her report. In the absence of Lonnie Lostak, treasurer, his representative and son, Tommie McLane Lostak, gave the treasurer's report.

Condolences were offered to Helen Filipp upon the loss of her husband, William E. (Bill) Filipp, Sr. Members stood for a moment of silence in his memory and also in memory of Eddy Filipp, Jr. who recently passed away.

Helen Filipp was elected Fraternalist of the Year from Lodge 139.

A social was held upon the completion of business.

Lodge No. 142 Houston On Sunday, October 9, 1988 at 2 p.m., our regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Dennis Hermis. We had 32 members, 6 guests and 10 children who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers and board members; all were present except Chairman of the Board Robert Kieschnick. Then the secretary read the minutes from our previous meeting, which stood approved as read.

Under correspondence, we read an announcement of the Gulf Coast Czech Festival to be held at Lodge No. 172, Pasadena, Texas on November 5th and 6th.

All officers' reports were read Sick Committee reports that Mae Schleider, Sharon Mullins and Nancy Cook are on the sick list. We hope all are feeling much better at this time.

New applicants were James Thompson, Jr., Dorothy M. Battaglia, Samantha Battaglia, Kathryn Michelle Beyer, Andrew C. Lehoski, Benjamin J. Lehoski, Crystal A. Lehoski. Sales Representative Sidon Tumis is credited with signing up 7 members and Sales Representative Robert Kieschnick with one member, Michael W. Schiwart.

Six members have increased their insurance.

Brother Martin Kieschnick made a motion to accept these new members; seconded by Brother Henry Hermis.

President Dennis Hermis recognized our special visitor, District V Director Jerry Prochazka who spoke on the quarterly meeting which he attended in Temple.

Our other visitors were Joe Gambil, Mr. Leitko, Mrs. Jo Buri, Mrs. Jo Ann Buri, Ella Schiwart and William Slaid.

President Dennis Hermis reported on the great time everyone had at District V Family Day, which was held at Crosby. Members from our lodge who were in attendance were Robert Kieschnick, the Buris, the Dennis Henrnises and the Eugene Veselkas.

Birthday and wedding anniversary celebrants recognized for October were Jo Ann Buri (39 years) and Lillian Schmidt (81 years, October 6); Henry and Rita Hermis married 39 years, Karen and Mark Schulz (6 years), Howard and Ruth Kieschnick (42 years). Congratulations to all of you!

One hundred dollar prize drawing went unclaimed due to the absence of F.B. Adlong. Next month's prize will again go for $100. Come to this meeting because you may be the lucky person. Youngest member prize of $5 went to Michael Schiwart. Four door prizes went to Rita Hermis, F.C. Buri, Alice Leitko and Lawrence Schilhab.

No. 155, Austin Reports

The regular meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 155 was held at the home of a devoted member, Mrs. Faye Mares, 2815 Glenview,at 2:30 p.m. on October 2, 1988.

Brother Clarence Boriski, president, convened the meeting and the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag was recited.

Minutes of the September meeting were read and approved.

Communications were read after roll call of all officers present with the exception of our beloved Honorary President, Mrs. Lillie K. Hejl who recently left us to receive her heavenly reward and to be joined with her dear husband, John. A card of sympathy from the Supreme Lodge to the Hejl family upon the loss of their mother was read by John Bryce Hejl.

Treasurer John B. Hejl gave his report.

Discussion followed with regard to our Christmas Banquet. It was decided that it would again be at Rosie's as last year. Members settled for December 4 beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Sister Doris Boriski is to make arrangements for reservations.

Also discussed was the election of officers for 1989. Sisters Doris Boriski, Marianna Wood and Georgia Mae Robertson were named to serve on the Nominating Committee.

As usual, Faye's tables were laden with abundance of delicious various foods -- all appropriate for a pre Thanksgiving dinner. Let me tell you, no one can prepare a better dinner than Faye. Thank you so very much!

The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone -- proof, no one left before 6 p.m. Thirteen adults attended.

The November meeting will be held at the Prasatik home, 3000 Enfield Road, on Sunday, November 6th,at 2 p.m.; phone 472 - 1721. Anyone wishing to play dominoes after the meeting and refreshments is encouraged to stay. We could use another card table and set of dominoes. A door prize of a violet will be drawn. We hope more of our members will attend.

Lodge No. 177, Academy The October meeting of Lodge No. 177, Academy was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Louis Driska.

Roll call of officers revealed all were present.

Pledge of Allegiance was recited and we had no one on the sick list.

The minutes from our last meeting were read and approved.

Three new members, David, Mark and Marcie Turner, were all accepted into the lodge.

All chairpersons' reports were good.

Libbie Bartek sent a sympathy card to Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Baca.

Correspondence was acknowledged from the Academy School PTO asking for donations; this came under new business.

Vice President Otis Beck made a suggestion to donate a ceiling fan to the PTO. The motion was made, seconded and passed.

Trustees' Report -- Loures Building Center of Temple was granted the use of our lodge building on December 16th and the Centex Peace Officers' Association to hold a dance on November 18th.

After no other business, the lodge members had a wonderful supper of turkey - a - la - king which was delicious as usual, Harvey. We hope we can follow the same procedure after every meeting no matter who the officers will be.

Members -- remember election of officers will be held in our November lodge meeting; now be there!

88 Birthday Club News

Lodge

On October 12, 1988 the Birthday Club Sisters met in the lodge dining room at 11:15 a.m. for their regular monthly meeting and luncheon.

The meeting was opened by President Kathy Trefell, who did the roll call, and we had a good attendance although we have some ill members.

The minutes were read by Secretary Rosalee Kostom, which were accepted as read. There were no correspondence, we continued with our treasurer's report by Lillie Spies, followed by Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut who gave us the card report.

I am so sorry to have to report that our dear sister and friend, Frances Olexa, has been in the hospital for over a week, however she has gone to her son, Henry, and we know she's getting the best of care. We really miss her because she's the organizer of our club and has missed very few meetings in 42 years. Frances had her 89th birthday on October 8 and celebrated that day in the hospital, also her only brother,

Frank Dvorak, was 91 years on the same day, and his wife, Frances, is taking good care of him.

Ruth Duncan, who lives in Livingston, has been real sick in the Northwest Medical Center, but I understand she's in a private room now. She's the mother of Wanda Kennedy and both have been club members and Ruth was very active in the Youth Club at one time. We wish her well.

Linda Rivers was reported ill; she is Agnes Pederson's daughter. Mary Schenburn's husband was in a fire in his home and got burned badly. Betty Kulhanek has been in the hospital, but we were so glad to see her and also Della Kadlecek at the meeting. We did miss you, Lillian Finn, but understand you are fine. Keep all these dear Sisters in your prayers.

Lillie Spies, our Birthday Club treasurer, has had a tragedy in her family; her sister - in - law, Selma Lucas, passed away on September 19 in a Houston hospital. Funeral service was at the Heights Chapel on September 22 with burial at the Forest Park West Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Bruno Lucas; son, Lawrence and daughter, Dorothy Fabrigel and son - in - law, A.J. and two granddaughters, Doris and Kim Fabrigel.

On October 8 Lawrence Lucas died at his home at 46 years of age. Funeral service was at the Heights Chapel on October 11, 1988. Burial was at Forest Park West Cemetery. His survivors are his father, Bruno Lucas; sister, Dorothy and A.J. Fabrigel and two nieces, Doris and Kim Fabrigel.

Dorothy Fabrigel has been quite active with the Youth Club. We extend our sympathy to all of you.

The Hegwood family had a wonderful surprise on October 6 when King's brother and wife, Gordon and Ruth Hegwood, flew in town from California for a visit on their way to Austin for a school - 100 - year anniversary. Along with that arrival surprise in came daughter, Vivian and husband, Eddie Baker, from Tampa, Florida. With this family gathering, sons, Vincent and Vernon,also came in from college. They, along with sister, Vicci Huble and her daughter, Kelsie, all played games and had a great time together. The only problem, no one of the family had any luck with the games; maybe next time! Maybe you couldn't have endured any more surprises after all this. The most excited one was little Kelsie when she, all of a sudden, saw her Aunt Vivian.

We have a TREAT coming up for you Birthday Club members: Wednesday, October 26 we will all go to Wyatts Cafeteria for a special dinner Helen Hegwood will get it all arranged, such as -- at 10:30 a.m. we go there, get in line and Lillie Spies will tag us and, at 11 a.m., we go through the line to eat. Helen is sure that the manager will furnish a birthday cake -he usually does.

Also, under old business President Kathy reminded us of Czech Day, October 30th. Lillie Spies asked for pastry and also help, which isn't hard to get. Some of our ladies in our Society offer to help, which we appreciate. "One hand washes the other." Again, I will mention our Czech Day at Lodge 88 on Sunday, October 30th. Turkey, dressing, ham will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by free entertainment and the Parade of Costumes. At 5 p.m. the dance with Vrazels will begin until 9 p.m.

NOW, if you get hungry again, go to the kitchen for a good old sausage

sandwich, pastry and a cup of coffee.

The dance is free provided you bought a meal ticket; otherwise $2 per person.

New business was a discussion on cooks for November and finally decided to have a covered dish. A motion was made by Mary Kosut, seconded by Virginia Hale to have a covered dish and meat furnished by the club. It passed unanimously. On the second Wednesday, a motion was made by Lillie Spies to have beef stew, seconded by Virginia Hale and it passed.

We do not know if President Kathy will get by with this, but she volunteered her husband, Mike, to cook the stew. We hope he'll accept because he is a good cook.

We then had the drawing for two door prizes. Martha Walla won Kathy's gift and Martha Walla won a neck pillow donated by Ima Lero. The Calcutta game was split between Willie Mae Ermis and Martha Baxter.

The cooks for October were Chairman Bessie Lero, Margaret Bohac, Agnes Moers and Georgia Buchanan.

We adjourned at 12:00 p.m. with table Grace by Mary Kosut.

Friendship Club Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was called to order by President Jo Prochaska, and she led the 37 members and guests to the Pledge to our flag.

She made welcome our guests Nita Roberts from De Leon, Cora Eddington from Englewood, California and Jewel Clark. Also our members Ruby Jones and Irene Green who have been out a while due to illness.

The minutes read by Merel Kovar and the treasury report by Lydia Alholm were approved as read.

Merel read a thank you from Irene Green for our thoughtfulness during her illness and Louise Oujesky expressed her thanks for the sympathy expression on the loss of her brother.

Anna Johnson reported she sent out 7 cards. Everyone appreciates them.

I thanked Rosemary Gribble and Geneva Hennessey for doing my part in calling all the members, that the meeting had to be changed from October 5th to the 12th because work was being done on the floor. I had just moved and at the time had no idea where the movers had my papers.

Thanks again.

Plans were made for our Thanksgiving dinner on Wednesday, November 2nd. We will have turkey, dressing and all the trimmings, with dessert and drink. We will start serving at 6 p.m. Non - members' plates will be $4 for adults and children 12 and under, $2.

Roy and Lydia Alholm will be leaving October 23rd from Las Vegas where they will meet Roy's brother from Washington State for a few days of fun. Good luck!

Quite a few of our members attended Czech Day at the State Fair Sunday, October 16th and it was a beautiful day which was enjoyed by all.

Happy Birthday went to Louise Oujesky, Bessie Brezina, Ima Lou La Plant, Roberta Peters, Irene Green, Denise Roselund, Frank Tesar and Al Kercho. May you all have many more.

What a nice turnout it was at our October meeting!

President Podhrasky opened the meeting with a pledge to our flag. A moment of silence was held for Sister Frances Baleja and Frank Mach.

Guests were Frank Noska, Alvin Elsik, Phil Reames, Bob Zvolanek, Bob Cunningham, Julius Podhrasky and Helen Oates and Mildred Chervenka's little granddaughter.

Greetings were sent by Teresa Carper, Alice Roberts, Hattie Grounds, Lillian Kaska, Helen Vrla, Sr., Helen Vrla, Jr. and also Virginia Blatney.

Bessie Reames read minutes of our September. meeting. Vicki Kohn gave the treasurer's report.

Correspondence Secretary Mary Sebestik read the following: a thank you from Lillian Graeser for the card and fruit sent her, a thank you from Helen Honza for the memorial for her brother, Berta Paryzkova's family sent a copy of the published obituary of Berta's death in Czechoslovakia; literature from the Denton State School, Ronald McDonald House, and the Dallas Botanical Gardens were also read.

Membership Chairperson Bertha Malik reported the death of our two dear sisters, Frances Baleja and Berta Paryzkova.

Sunshine Chairperson Liddie Pavelka mailed sympathy cards to the family of Frances Baleja and to Agnes Mach.

Libbie Elsik mailed get well cards to Jomes Pavelka, Lillian Graeser and Martha Kocian.

Birthday Card Chairperson Millie Noska sent greetings to Libby Slovak, Lydia Kartous, Hattie Grounds, Ella Mae Faraizl, Suzanne Novak, Christine Woods and Bertha Podhrasky.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to the October birthday celebrants.

Hostess Chairperson Bessie Kalich introduced the hostesses for October, namely, Dorothy Reznik, Bessie Reames, Aggie Mach and Esther Cunningham.

Esther Cunningham outlined the program that will be presented on Czech Day at the State Fair on October 16th.

By this time the Czech Day 1988 is history. There was a nice turnout, the weather was beautiful, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. It was nice to see Sister Rose Kopecek among the crowd this year.

The little children, I feel, were the best of the program again this year.

It does sadden me, however, that we see less and less of our teenagers performing from the various areas.

The adults are filling in where once it was all young people. The youth who do perform are to be commended even if they aren't perfectionists-at least they wear their Czech costumes and carry out their Czech tradition. It makes one wonder how can it be possible for our Czech Cultural Program to continue if our young people fail to carry on.

Liddie Pavelka reported she is working on the Rules and Regulations.

Sister Rose Kopecek had pictures on hand that were taken years ago of our Krouzek members.

Bessie Kalich asked whether we preferred that the fried chicken for our November luncheon be purchased from The Colonel or Church's. It was voted that we buy Church's chicken.

Those of us who preferred the Colonel's just lost out! Remember to bring a covered dish that will complement the fried chicken.

We talked about our Christmas Party and voted to have it here at the Sokol and that it be catered. Further discussion regarding our party will be continued at our November meeting.

If you have any good ideas, please bring them with you.

President Podhrasky announced the Sokol Christmas Party will be held on December 4th this year. Our Circle will donate towards this party and everyone is invited to attend.

Door prizes this month were furnished by Ella Mae Faraizl, Rose Kopecek and Zdenka Skotak and won

by Zdenka Skotak, Aggie Mach and Mary Kubacak.

Flowers were furnished by Anne Zvolanek and Bertha Podhrasky.

Virginia Blatney and her husband are to be congratulated on their 60th wedding anniversary.

Dorothy Reznik, Rose Ann Parma, Anne Zvolanek and their spouses attended the President's Banquet presented by the Texas Fraternal Congress in DeSoto, Texas on October 21st.

Sister Rose Kopecek read a beautiful poem entitled "The Heart Remembers" to all of us at our meeting.

In closing, let me remind all of you to get out and vote on November 8th.

If you feel that your one vote cannot make a difference, think about these facts: In 1875 one vote changed France from a monarchy to a republic. In 1876 one vote gave Rutherford B. Hayes the U.S. presidency. In 1923 one vote gave Adolf Hitler leadership of the Nazi Party. In 1941 one vote saved Selective Service just weeks before Pearl Harbor was attacked.

Please go vote and pray that God will guide the voters of this great nation to select a president and vice president who will not only lead our Nation with integrity, sound judgment, but most of all in a Christian manner.

And Information About The Gulf Coast Czech Festival News

Did you know that if you have, saved a few nickels and pennies, you will be able to attend the second Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival and also have a good time.

Just imagine a full course -- two meat dinner and all the trimmings for only $4; a glass of Texas beer for 50 cents or a can of cold Texas beer for 75 cents; about 7 to 8 hours of dancing to good polka and waltz music for $4.

This will be on Sunday, November 6th at SPJST Lodge No. 172, 3609 Preston Road, Pasadena. Everything is pre inflation prices. This will be your last chance to enjoy these prices.

On Saturday, November 5th, the Harris County Czech Heritage Society will meet and everyone is invited to attend; you do not have to be a member and there is no charge. Several people have returned from Czechoslovakia and will speak about their experience.

Later, the El Campo Singing Czechs and the East Bernard Czech Singers will perform prior to the dance starting at 9 p.m. until 1 a.m.; at 10 p.m., a contest to determine the three winning pair of polka and waltz dancers. Trophies will be awarded.

Music will be by Henry Repka and his Polka Band.

Music on Sunday afternoon will be by the Vanek Polka Band from Victoria and will include a Parade of Czech Costumes (krojs). The master of ceremonies for this day will be the well known Calvin Chervenka of Dallas.

Singers on Sunday afternoon will be the Lodge 88 Czech Choral Group and their Concert Czech Orchestra. Later on, the Czech Heritage Singers of Galveston County will perform and then the closing remarks by Father Paul Chovanec. You will certainly enjoy Father Chovanec.

During the afternoon activities, an address will be made by representatives of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas.

At this time, I want to mention that this affair is a Czech Festival and not a fest because there is not a fest listed in the Czech dictionary and people in Czechoslovakia do not know what fest means. Also, our festival is not commercialized and is only put on by Czech organizations.

The Sunday evening dance music from 5 until 9 p.m. will be by the Wence Shimek Band and will conclude the Gulf Coast Czech Festival.

There will be a booth set up by the Czech Heritage Society with many books and pictures; also they will explain how to go about tracing your family history. There will be a mini museum and a general store with arts, food and craft for sale plus lots and lots of fresh baked kolache and goodies.

So please come to Pasadena and meet your friends.

Past Scholarship Recipient's Sentiments A

Dear Readers, Once again I have seen the announcements of the SPJST scholarship recipients. My congratulations and sincere hopes of continued success go out to these fine

Frances F. McDonald young adults. It wasn't so very long ago that I myself was on the receiving end of this award.

Having gone to the University of Texas. at Austin, and graduating in 1986 with a Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology, I now reside in Maryland and am employed by Georgetown University Medical School as a Research Microbiologist.

The study of the sciences, in relation to human illness and disease, is a fascinating, yet challenging field.

• I live and work in an area that houses the Nation's leading institution in the medical and biological research fields: The National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is here that many turn as a last resort and hope for help in the battle against deadly diseases.

My' research is closely linked with that of NIH and this often puts me on that campus. Even though I do not directly interact with patients in the clinical setting, I am exposed to them as I travel the campus and hallways of the major clinics. Let me assure you, afflictions such as cancer, leukemia and AIDS do not discriminate in any fashion regarding age, sex, religion or race. One is just as likely to see an infant or a small child in the arms of their mother or father waiting for a blood transfusion, a dialysis machine or treatment with a new experimental drug as one is to see an elderly person being treated for cancer or Alzheimer's disease. However, it is not always as dismal a picture as one might first expect: since even in the face of small failures and setbacks, these people still have that hope and chance of at least some small comfort or relief generated by the efforts and labors of those who treat them.

After such visits at NIH, I always return to the lab with a feeling that what I and others in the field are doing will, in the future, and with God's speed, help in the prevention, fight and cure of some of today's maladies and tragedies of the human body.

With this in mind, I would like to encourage all of those who are continuing their education to excel -and make a difference. Buckholts, Texas Dear Editor and Vestnik Readers: I have received word from one of its members that the Prague Symphony Orchestra of Prague, Czechoslovakia will be in concert at Nacogdoches, Texas on Friday, November 4th and in Texarkana at the Perat Theatre on Main Street on Saturday, November 5th.

For the time and place in Nacogdoches, I suggest that you call the Chamber of Commerce there because that is how we ascertained the time and place in Texarkana.

My family and I feel a personal interest in this orchestra since one of its members, Pavel Verner, is a dear friend of ours. I started corresponding with his parents at the end of World War II and when my daughters were in Prague, they stayed in their home and M. Vernerova was an excellent guide of the city. Such was the case during my visit in 1985 and also this year when my brother, E.J. Kuzel and his wife, Minnie Marie, visited with the Verners in August.

The head of the family, Ing. Verner is now deceased, but his wife gallantly carries on with four married sons and a married daughter, numerous grandchildren and even great grandchildren. They are all educated; three sons hold PhD degrees, and a granddaughter, Ludmila Stejskalova, made her singing debut amid national acclaim and performs often at the National Theater (Narodni Divadlo).

The whole family is not only educated, but truly musically talented. In short, it is a family of intellectuals.

I should have noted earlier that the Texas performances will feature compositions by Smetana, Dvorak and other Czech classical composers.

I'm hoping that, by giving this early notice, lovers of Czech classical music will have time to make plans to attend.

By: W.J. "Bill" Malina The 1988 general election is almost upon us. Many people will stay away from the polls on November 8, each with his or her own excuse for not voting. Some of the reasons they will give are: "Well, there really is no difference between the candidates," "There is no one running who I would vote for," "The person who I would like to vote for is not running," or "My vote will not make any difference anyway." (I must admit that I have, at times, used some of these or similar excuses for not voting.) What if everyone felt that way?

There are millions of people in the world who wish they had the privilege of voting, of having just a little say in the affairs of their government. Voting is a precious privilege; it is a right that has been bought at a very high price by our forefathers. Many a person has laid down his life to guarantee that the precept of free elections will not disappear or become abused.

In addition to being a privilege, voting is a responsibility, a responsibility not to be taken lightly.

Many of the people who will exercise their privilege, fulfill their responsibility and cast their ballot on November 8 will do so without being fully aware of all of the issues at stake.

Some will vote just for the sake of voting, others will be knowledgeable about the major issues, but uninformed about the less publicized

From The District Youth Counselor District I And IV Camped Together Dear Readers: Now that fall is upon us and the weather is finally cooling off, I thought it would be refreshing to look back at the 1988 camp session.

(Besides, I've been putting it off now for three months.)

District I and IV began their 1988 camping season on Monday, July 18th. We camped at Camp Val Verde.

From 2 to 3 p.m., all campers registered, made name tags and settled into their cabins. The activities began with olympics, swimming and craft.

For supper, we had a Mexican feast complete with tacos and the trimmings. Several youth dressed tojit the occasion. We played games with pinto beans, balloons and, to top the night off, we even had pinatas full of goodies. After the Juniors went to their cabins ,(notice I didn't say "to bed'), the Senior group enjoyed a late night swim.

Tuesday was full of excitement as each age group participated in their daily activities; some rode horses while others went canoeing, swimming, played baseball or worked on their camp craft. This year's camp craft was decorated T - shirts. They all turned out great. Tuesday afternoon all enjoyed free time at the river while Chief Cook Tim Reese grilled hot links. A fire was built and all enjoyed cooking and eating smores!

Wednesday was filled, once again, with various activities including finishing up olympic events. The theme for Wednesday night was a Hawaiian Luau. Most of the campers came to the pool in grass skirts, swim suits or Hawaiian shorts and shirts. All the 6 to 8 - year - old girls came in

Lodge No. 9 Campers beautiful green grass skirts. We played games with hula hoops, lifesavers, leis and even a greased watermelon toss.

We then presented the olympic medals for each event to each age group; some walked away with more gold, silver and bronze than Carl Lewis. After all the excitement, everyone enjoyed sliced watermelon for a bedtime snack. The teenagers then went on a scavenger hunt that took them to the river and to Christy's Crossing. Some even had a close encounter with a hairy creature. Was that you, John!

Dear Vestnik Readers, On October 6, 1988 at 6:30 p.m., the District V youth began their kitchen selling; they sold hot dogs, chili dogs, chili cheese dogs, cheese dogs and Frito pie.

Members present were John Buri (Lodge 142), Crystal Wallace, Julie Clayton and Cindy Groendes, all from Lodge 88. Adults present were Mrs. Bufi, DYC Marie Stayton, Assistant Nancy Steubing and Assistant Lodge 88 Youth Leader Mrs. Groendes.

We would like to thank all the great supporters who bought all the good food from us; especially, thanks go out to A.J. and Marie Stayton for getting all the food. We also need to thank the board for allowing us to use the kitchen on Thursday nights to sell food. We made $91 on our first night.

I think that is a great accomplishment.

During closing ceremonies, best campers were awarded with trophies.

Best Senior Boy Camper went to Tommy Ihlenfeldt of Lodge No. 17, New Tabor. Best Senior Girl Camper was Mica Petty, also of Lodge No. 17.

Best Junior Girl Camper was Donna Luza of Lodge No. 39, Bryan with Wesley Ford of Lodge No. 13, Dime Box being the Best Junior Boy Camper.

Lodge 66 Youth Met In September Dear Members, The September 18, 1988 meeting of Lodge No. 66, Waco Youth Club was called to order at 2:10 p.m. by Mike Warren. Candace Pavlicek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 40, El Campo - Hillje Youth Club was held on October 6th.

The Halloween project was judged and it was decided to make projects about Thanksgiving for the November meeting.

Members were reminded of the District VI meeting and to bring prizes for their booth at the district meeting.

Folk dancing was, practiced and time was spent making Halloween decorations. Another workshop was scheduled on October 15, 1988.

The items then will be delivered, along with magazines, to the nursing home.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting on October 15, 1988 at the Taiton Community Center at 9:30 a.m. The meeting was called to order by President Marcy Dorotik.

Bradley Krpec said the pledge and Jennifer Diuhos led the prayer.

Secretary Stephanie Roye called the roll and read the minutes. The treasurer's and assistant treasurer's reports were read.

We discussed many projects that we will be doing in the upcoming months.

Poems were read by Lenice and Michael Kaspar, Craig, Jeanine,

Curtis and Marcy Dorotik, Valerie and Stephanie Roye and Craig Dornak.

The District VI meeting will, be October 30th in Victoria. Bring a drawing booth item and wheel - of fortune items to the district meeting.

The La Bamba Group -- Lenice Kaspar, Valerie Roye, Jeanine Dorotik and Sara Dluhos; and the Andrew Sisters, namely Marcy Dorotik, Jennifer Diuhos and Stephanie Roye performed October 8th at Grande Day in El Campo.

The La Bamba Group will also perform October 22nd at the Texas Fraternal Congress.
