The holiday season is in our near future and will be here before we realize it and, with it, of course, come the questions of what shall we get for our sons and daughters and grandchildren for gifts. A suggestion comes to mind and that's a permanent gift which becomes very valuable -- a life insurance certificate with the SPJST! The weekend of October 29 and 30 reminds us of four district fall meetings with their various activities taking place -- at Rowena in District IV when Lodge No. 49 members will play hosts Saturday, October 29; and October 30 the other three districts scheduled their meetings and different contests for the entire family at Lodge No. 25, Ennis (District III), Lodge No. 32, Victoria (District VI), and Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi (District VII).

We encourage all members to attend their respective district meeting family day functions; who knows, you may also win something worthwhile that could be a surprise. ***

ATTENTION Scholarship Applicants -- you and your parents are all asked and requested urgently to read the ATTENTION NOTICE and letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar on page 3 of this issue. Your editor attended the third reg ular quarterly Supreme Lodge meeting Tuesday, October 4th at 1:30 p.m. and that was one of the subjects discussed at length by the entire Board of twelve members. Brother Leshikar and Pokladnik had been contacted by some lodges and schools requesting the scholarships be announced in time for "Awards' Presentations" at some schools, especially when they are held earlier in the Spring, therefore, President Leshikar's office was requested to accelerate the procedure and, therefore, all student members are being given notice in time.

Program" of our SPJST Society, and sometimes it seems that our membership, in general, does not give very much thought to the benefits derived from being a member of SPJST. If our members and readers remember, a short time ago (in two issues each), we published thirty - two names of scholarship recipients for a total of sixty - four which amounted $32,000 the SPJST gave in scholarships in 1988 thus helping 64 students in their efforts for gaining higher education. Just think, a young person 16 years old can become a Lone Pay Life Insurance member for $5,000 worth of insurance for life for a cost of about $400 (single premium) and become eligible for a scholarship worth more than the premium! Think about it --- plus so many more fraternal and beneficial activities. How many "plain vanilla" insurance companies offer these benefits? You surely do not need a long sheet of paper to list them! *** Home buyers who take on an adjustable - rate mortgage only to be socked later with unexpected costs can no longer blame lenders for their troubles. Under new disclosure rules required by the Federal Reserve Board as of October 1, lenders must give you an educational packet and explain the mechanics of available ARM's before you apply for one or pay a fee. The rules, which don't cover home - equity loans, call for lenders to explain the ARM's variable - rate structure; the index the ARM is tied to, such as six month Treasury - bill rates; the points added to the index to set your rate, and how often the rate can change. You'll also be given a sample of how rates and payments have performed since 1977 on a $10,000 loan, plus a formula for calculating best and worst - case scenarios for the exact loan amount you're seeking. One of the disclosure statements suggests you ask lenders about discounted ARM rates, which may actually be "teasers," improbably low rates meant to lure you in but that may be upped after a month or so.

Under the new rules, lenders, if asked, must tell you that a discounted rate may not last long. *** Look for a meteoric display in the night sky on October 20, when the Earth enters the orbital path of Halley's comet. The cornet's dust and debris ignite when they hit the Earth's atmosphere, causing what could be a colorful show of shooting stars and other heavenly sparklers. Dubbed the Orionid meteor shower because it seems to sprout from the constellation Orion, it is one of the most reliable annual arrays, averaging from 10 to 70 meteors an hour, says the U.S. Naval Observatory. Though Orion will sit in the Southeast, you'll be able to see the fireworks anywhere in the sky, with the best display after midnight. ***

October 6, 1988 The Supreme Lodge Board has revised the SPJST Scholarship Application Deadlines to allow for the winning student to be recognized before their peers at each winners' respective high school awards' ceremony.

Application may be made during the high school senior year. Scholarships will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school, or its equivalent.

College undergraduates may apply for a scholarship for the next school year.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE Applicants must be qualified members of the SPJST. Qualified members are those having an active SPJST insurance certificate in force. The certificate must be in force one year at the time of application to be considered.

The Supreme Lodge Officers and Directors have revised the SPJST Scholarship deadline so that the Scholarship Winners can be recognized at the 'Awards' Ceremony" of their respective school.

SELECTION OF ACCREDITED COLLEGE AND DEGREE Scholarship winners may attend any college that has programs leading to a Bachelor's Degree in the United States of America accredited by a recognized

accrediting body. Negotiations for admission must be conducted entirely by the scholarship applicant.

AWARDS 2. Tournament advancement will be The SPJST will award scholarships in from local lodge, to district playoff, to the Freshman and Undergraduate state tournament.

Programs in the amount of $500. You can only be a recipient of one SPJST 3. Two teams will be eligible from Scholarship, however, if you are each lodge to compete on the district unsuccesful in your initial application level. you may reapply the following school years or until you are a recipient.

4. Top two teams from the district *** playoff will advance to the state tournament.

SCHOLARSHIPS

5. District Youth Counselors and/or Assistant DYC will be in charge of the district playoff.

The SPJST annually awards $500 first year scholarships for high school graduates and 8500 scholarships for college undergraduates.

6. Players must be sixteen by the date set for the local lodge tournament.

ALL APPLICANTS MUST: 1. Be an SPJST insurance certificate holder for at least one year at the time of application.

2. Hold an active SPJST insurance certificate for the duration of the scholarship.

3. Return the application below by Dec. 31 of this year. By sending in this application we then will send you the forms needed to apply along with appropriate instruction.

4. Accept the decision of our highly qualified Committee Members as final.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge has absolutely no influence in these decisions.

District Level: First Place Team $25 plus Lodge Trophy; Second Place Team - $15 plus Plaque

SPJST First Annual Volleyball Tournament The Supreme Lodge Board has approved the First Annual SPJST Volleyball Tournament for members 16 and over.

Each lodge is eligible to have two (2) teams represent their lodge at the district playoffs. The first and second place winners in the district will represent their district at the state finals.

The officers have planned a very exciting day with two new contests, a kolache contest and a volleyball tournament. District VI Fall Social And Meeting Dear Fellow District VI Members: This year's district social and meeting will be held on October 30 at Leo's Restaurant located at Victoria Regional Airport.

Registration will begin at 11 p.m.

The serving of the free catered meal will begin at 12 noon.

The short meeting will be called to order at 1:05 p.m, followed by the Presentation of Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance.

The welcome will be by Lodge No. 32 President with the response by District VI 1st Vice President.

A tribute to our deceased members will be read by District VI 2nd Vice President. A candle will be lit during that time.

The SPJST Motto will be read by the District VI Youth Counselor, members are to shake hands with their neighbors at that time.

The DYC will then give a short report on District VI Royalty.

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 24 was held Tuesday, October 4th. Mentioned on the sick list this month was Della Fojtasek who is in the hospital. To you, Mrs. Fojtasek, we wish a speedy recovery. We are happy to report that Dorothy Morris was with us at the meeting after her stay in the hospital. Good health is wished to all our members.

Sympathy was extended to the family of Mr. Adolph Luksa who passed away in September.

Many of our members are celebrating special days this month.

On the birthday list for October are: Ruth Psencik (October 1st), Veronica Sebek (October 2nd), David Sebek (October 7th), Carl Macek (October 9th), Joe Baker (October 15th), Ryan Sebek (October 17th), Melanie Zavodny (October 22nd) and Nick Morris (October 23rd).

Anniversaries for October are: Barbara and Robert Macek (October 3rd), and Ryan and Stacey Sebek (October 24th).

The Flag Hall Lodge has been reimbursed from First National Bank in Temple for money that was on deposit during the 1930s and lost during the depression. A claim was filed and received for this money from the bank. The membership in attendance at the meeting voted to deposit this money in the lodge savings account.

Congratulations to LaVerne Cabla who won third place on her kolache at the District II meeting in Elgin. We'll be ready for some samples any time, LaVerne. Also, congratulations are in order to Jerry Cabla and Lynn Tschoerner who won third place in the horseshoe contest at the District II meeting. Good pitching, fellows!

Thanks to Joe Sebek, Joe Baker and Johnny Chervenka who repaired the popcorn machine that is in the hall kitchen. Thanks a lot, guys!

Mark your calendars now for our Christmas Party which will be held December 11th. That's the second Sunday of the month. Plan now to attend. The Happy Hour will begin at 3 p.m., followed by the Youth Club program at 4 p.m. and supper at 5 p.m. There will be turkey and dressing for supper and free drinks will be available during the Happy Hour.

Everyone is asked to bring a salad or vegetable and dessert. Please bring enough for your family.

The Rules and Regulations Committee met during the past month and outlined some changes they thought necessary. These proposed changes will be voted on at our meeting in November. Please plan to attend so you can have a voice in the management of our hall. Also, officers will be elected at the November meeting. This is your lodge. No. 39, Bryan Will Host A "Fall Arts/Crafts Czech Festival"

Lodge No. 80, Holland Dear Members and Friends: Our regular monthly meeting was held on Sunday, October 2nd at 2 p.m.

President Bohac called the meeting to order with all officers present.

Our secretary, Brother Latham, was asked to read the 'minutes of the September meeting. They were accepted as read.

In correspondence we had a thank you card from the Zajicek family for the contribution made in memory of John Zajicek from Lodge 80; a nice letter of thanks from Mr. and Mrs. Neiman for the get well wishes while they were in the hospital, and a word of thanks from Brother Dan Grossman who was present at the meeting recuperating from major surgery at Scott and White.

A word of thanks was given to Brother Rohde for the work he had done on our lodge hall yard by President Bohac.

The secretary gave a good report from various departments of our lodge.

We were glad to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Julius Sirny from Lodge No. 47 who visited with us at our meeting.

A big thank you was extended to American Legion Post No. 526 for the tables donated to our lodge by President Bohac.

SPJST members voted to donate $250 for the renovation of Kulhman Civic Center in downtown Holland.

It's getting a real facelift inside and Dutsid e. This is a worthwhile project and it will be a great asset to the community.

Our 25th anniversary of building the present hall was, again, discussed; after a lot of discussion, it was decided to have an Anniversary Dance on Sunday, November 6th from 4 to 8 p.m.; music will be by Eddie Ray and The Polka Dots. With each paid admission, you will get a free hamburger. There will be plenty of kolache and other goodies to eat, so come out to our 25th anniversary and have a nice time. We surely welcome you.

There was no other business pertaining to the lodge, Brother Rohde made a motion to adjourn the meeting and it was seconded by Eddie Kunz.

Door prize winners were Laura Jesake, Harold Rohde, Otto Horelica, Eddie Kunz and Frank Pajestka, Jr. The crops are all in with a bountiful harvest of wheat, milo, corn and cotton.

We had some good rains lately, but will be needing some more.

We're hoping to see all of you at our Anniversary Celebration on November 6th.

Sorry about the mistake. Please forgive. We are very proud of you and wish the best for your future education.

On Sunday, September 25, 1988, we had the privilege of helping Jerry and Bessie Kolacny celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at the SPJST Lodge 88. It was a wonderful occasion for them, their children and their many friends. A most delicious dinner was served. Bessie has been active in the kitchen on special functions and Jerry belongs to the Men's Club, and you all know how much these men do keeping up the grounds and the building. We all wish you many more years, which is possible; Helen Hegwood just told me she went to a 65th anniversary.

Louise Kadlecek and I spent a day with Grandma Hanka on September 23rd and made her very happy because she is so interested in Lodge 88's happenings. You can take Grandma away from the lodge, but you can't take the lodge out of her; she and many others, who are not with us any more did so much to keep the "ball" rolling years ago. She tells me how she's fry many pork chops and then get on the bus and carry them to the lodge. How many of us would do that now? Then on September 27, Louis Hanus asked me to go to the Needville insurance seminar with him and we again visited with Mama Hanka.

We have a great party coming up at Lodge 88 -- The Blue Room Party; as I have said before, don't miss it because Chairman of the Blue Room Margaret Allbritton and her committee are working very hard to make this an occasion you'll never forget. It will be Sunday, December 18th from 4 to 9 p.m. -- cocktails, dinner and dancing for only $10 a person. The Central

Texas Sounds will play, and you had better get your tickets now at the office no later than December 1st, or put your name on the list, if tickets are sold out, because there may be some reservations canceled. The menu will be roast beef and ???

On October 2, 1988 we had another beautiful wedding at our lodge when Elaine Annette, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Gerlich, Sr. got married to Max Victor, son of Mrs. Rebecca O'Canas at 2:30 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church. I will send a picture and details later because the family has not given me the writeup.

Congratulations to this fine couple.

The dances at the Chandelier Ballroom have been well attended by the nicest people, because Louis Hanus always says and we agree. We have some good dances coming up. Check your dance schedule carefully because he music is for one and all. Most of our bands play a variety of music, which makes everybody happy.

Our youth under the direction of DYC Marie Stayton and Youth Leader Barbara Lenny have a money - making project going. On our Thursday game night, they are serving hot dogs, Nachos, Frito pie, etc. to the players, which is greatly appreciated. They have a goal in mind, which is a bus trip to Sea World in San Antonio in 1989. I hope they can accomplish what they set out to do; let's help them wherever we can.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan.

The members and guests stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for a moment of silence in honor of our departed Brother Jack Hattendorf and Sister Teresa Vrba.

May they rest in peace.

Brother Milan welcomed Jewel Clark and June Jirik.

All officers were present.

All the reports were approved as read.

Brother Milan read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge and expressions of thanks from the Jack Hattendorf and Teresa Vrba families and correspondence from Sister Rosemary Banik re District III meeting that will be hosted by Lodge No. 25, Ennis.

Our vice president, Sister Rose Steinman, had the schedule for Czech Day at the Fair for all to check on the different events.

Sister Carolyn Cleveland, our youth leader, requested for members to bring a cake for the youth club cake walk at the Halloween Party on Monday, October 31 from 7 to 9 p.m. She also stated she invited State Youth Director Claudette Reese to attend our annual Christmas program -- date and time later.

Brother Frank and Sister Merel Kovar returned home safely after a 15 day tour of Helsinki, Leningrad and Moscow. They gave us an interesting detail of their trip which they enjoyed so much. It was quite an experience.

Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan and sons Rome and Tal, along with Sisters Mila Waldauf and Leslie Poindexter, arrived home safely from Hawaii, Thursday. Rome and Tal

made it there safely from Seoul.

Brother Rome gave us a good report on their participation in Seoul, and said there is no place like the United States of America.

Brother C.L. and Sister Patti Gage of Decateur just returned from Las Vegas where they celebrated their 9th wedding anniversary, and had good luck. May you have many more.

Sister Carolyn Cleveland, Sister Carrie Milan and mother Jewel Clark returned Saturday from a week in Branson, Missouri, Table Rock Lake and sights all around. They reported a wonderful time.

A group of our members attended the 50th anniversary of Lodge No. 92, Saturday. It was a wonderful occasion.

Sorry a group of us had to leave early to be back at the hall by 5 p.m.

Congratulations to Sister Anna Johnson, who was nominated as "Fraternalist of the Year."

Jerry Max Lane will be back for a country/western dance Saturday, November 19 and New Year's Eve. Time is flying by so mark your calendars for the Metroplex Lodges' Christmas Party on Sunday, December 4, hosted by our lodge. The Czech Harvesters will play for the dance.

I've had a very busy week; I sold our home and moved to an apartment; just a hop, skip and jump from the hall. I know my chauffeurs love that.

Sister Henrietta Milan was our door prize winner, in turn, she gave it to the lodge.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, November 13 at 3 p.m.

Mini-Museum On The Road

In August, the SPJST Mini Museum traveled to the Buckholts Cotton Festival with a display of an old - fashioned cotton picker.

Curator Thelma Bartosh was assisted

by District II Director Willie E. Kohutek and Mrs. Adeline Kohutek.

In September, the Mini - Museum went to the Caldwell Kolache Festival with a display of an old - fashioned kitchen and other crafts. The curator was assisted by District I Director Andrew Vavra and his two daughters.

The dry cleaning shop of Frank Batista provided museum housing.

October 1st, the SPJST Mini Museum displayed various items under the tent graciously provided by the Green Funeral Home at the Annual Rosebud Reunion. Mr. and Mrs. John Plasek were hosts for the curator and

District II Director Willie E. Kohutek and Mrs. Adeline Kohutek.

October 22nd, the Mini - Museum will travel to Lodge No. 39, Bryan, and November 5th and 6th, it will be in Pasadena for the Gulf Coast Czech Festival at SPJST Lodge No. 172.

The Mini - Museum presents glimpses of the many articles which are on display at the SPJST Museum in Temple, most of the articles were donated by the members. We are open each weekday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

SPJST Ornament Contest Guidelines All ornaments must be homemade -No store bought finished ornaments allowed. Ornaments must be youth club member's own creation. No pre assembled kits. Styrofoam balls are allowed.

Ornaments will be judged at the District fall meeting. The DYC will be in charge of securing judges and ribbons. There will be one winner in each age group category; 6 - 9, 10 - 12, 13 - 14 and 15 - 17.

Size of Ornament -- No larger than 3 inches in width, 3 inches in length, 3 inches in height

The four winning ornaments from each district will be sent to the Supreme Lodge via the DYC where they will be placed on an SPJST State Youth Club Christmas Tree in the Museum.

JUDGING CRITERIA Creative ability and skill -- 45 points Appearance and design -- 35 points Neatness -- 20 points MATERIALS -- May. use any material appropriate for a Christmas ornament WHO MAY ENTER -- Each youth club member may enter (1) ornament.

Winners at the State level will be recognized with a certificate and have their ornament on the State Youth Christmas Tree. A picture of the Christmas tree will be on the front page of the Vestnik with the names of the winners.

From The District Youth Counselor District I Fall Fun Day Well Attended On September 25, 1988, District I held their second annual Fall Fun Day. The event was hosted by Lodge No. 17, New Tabor.

The day was filled with fun activities for both young and old alike. The highlight of the day's activities was the First Annual District I Volleyball Tournament. Six teams representing four lodges participated in this event.

Teams participating included: Lodge No. 13, Dime Box; Lodge No. 9, Snook; two teams from Lodge No. 17, New Tabor; and two teams from Lodge No. 39, Bryan. Lodge No. 17 came away with the first place trophy with Lodge No. 13 winning second place. All participants had a fun filled afternoon of good competitive play.

The youth of the district enjoyed watching the "old folks" play volleyball when they were not involved in activities of their own. The youth enjoyed running relays and playing games while awaiting the results of the Christmas Tree Ornament contest.

Thirty - four youth representing four lodges participated in this contest. The winners were:

6 - 9 -- Lamanda Kostelka (Lodge 13) 10 - 12 -- Grant Faust (Lodge 39) 13 - 14 -- Denise Holubec (Lodge 39) 15 - 17 -- Brian Faust (Lodge 39) The competition continued into the darkness with the horseshoe pitching contest. Three teams entered with Donnie Paul and Gary Zwernemann from Lodge No. 17 winning first place.

Others participating were Mike Faust, Eddie Macik, Brian Faust, and Norman Holubec, all of Lodge No. 39.

The tournament was delayed due to the length of the volleyball competition and had to be completed by the light of the moon with a little help from the headlights of trucks.

9, Snook Does Charity For Community

Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting was very interesting. Thanks, Cheryl, for getting Mr. Gaas to give us a tour of the Fire Station.

We collected newspapers for the Dear Readers, At our monthly meeting, we signed animal shelter, magazines to rest thank you cards for the people who homes, and plan to do puppets for Community Harvest Festival on fixed up the courts.

After the meeting we had a contest. Halloween night at the Fellowship Hall We went over to the volleyball court of Snook Brethren Church, October and whoever picked up the most glass 31, 1988 at 6 p.m.

The next monthly meeting will be got $5; I almost won.

40 Youth Club Meeting

Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje Youth Club held its monthly meeting on October 6, 1988. The meeting was called to order by President Darren Dybala.

Lisa Morris led the Pledge of Allegiance and Darren Dybala led the Youth Club Pledge.

Secretary Kim Kacal and Treasurer Danny Borak gave their reports.

There were eleven members and eight adults present.

We discussed the District VI fall meeting. We will perform and have a drawing. Our Christmas fund - raiser is now under way and doing very well.

For charity we collected stamps for food and magazines to donate to the nursing home.

On October 15, we will make decorations and decorate the nursing home with a Halloween theme.

Winners of the Halloween contest were as follows: Juniors -- 1st, Martha Bartos; 2nd, Derrick Morris; 3rd, Sharron Borak.

Teens -- 1st, Kim Kacal; 2nd, Danny Borak.

Our next meeting will be on November 3rd.

Lodge 9 Youth Recognize Senior Citizens Dear Readers, The Snook SPJST Youth Club members honored their grandparents and all senior citizens of the community at a reception and program in their honor. The program included skits, readings and singing. Special certificates of recognition were presented to each guest and Mrs. Ella Orsak was chosen "Grandmother of the Year." Brother Beseda and his group of singers added greatly to the program with their singing of several Czech songs.

24 Youth Plan Halloween Party

After our meeting, SYD Claudette Reese, her husband, and three daughters came and taught us Beseda.

All who participated had fun and we hope to enter this year's YAD. I feel that this dance is a very important part of our Czech heritage and Lodge 24 youth is proud to have learned it.

Dear Readers, The October 9, 1988 meeting of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone Youth Club was called to order at 1 p.m. by President Christy Marek.

Kindra and Michelle Mikeska led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Eighteen members and two guests': Chad Bruggman and Martha Zavodny, were present.

Kristie Waits gave the treasurer's report. Our youth leader reported a dance which will be October 28 at Seaton Lodge 47 after the football game from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. music will be provided by Charles Mikeska and his band.

Our Halloween Party will be either October 29 or October 30 depending on school activities. A definite date will be set later by our leaders. The party will be at Youth Leader Rose Harvell's; there will be a hayride, wiener roast, games and movies. If you plan to bring a friend, please let Rose know. This party will be furnished by the youth leader and Assistant Pauline Marek.

At our next meeting, we will vote on Christmas gifts. Members be thinking about drawing names; parents bringing gifts for their children or each youth bringing a gift for their age group (Juniors 7 - 11), (Teens 13 - 16)

9 Youth Club Gets Special Treat

Dear Readers, The Snook SPJST Youth Club had a special treat for our October monthly meeting. Mr. Dennis Gaas, a member of the Snook Volunteer Fire Department, took us to the fire station for a tour. He told us all abc4it the trucks and the equipment and how the men fight the fires in our community.

The program was very interesting and we learned a lot. A big thanks to Mr. Gaas.

Mr. Dennis Gaas gave us a tour of the Snook Fire Station. We got to see the inside of the fire station and fire trucks. It was great.

Lodge 74 Youth Attend Six Flags Dear Readers, The youth of District II had a great time at Six Flags on September 11th.

We, at Lodge 74, Lovelady, would especially like to thank Frank and Irma Klinkovsky for the support they gave us; we had a wonderful time. We love you both! Also thanks to Donnie and Sherry McKenney, Donald and Rhonda Haynie and Linda Millican for driving us to Six Flags. Next summer we would like to go to Houston to Astroworld.

Our youth are planning to have a Halloween Party on Friday night, October 28th. We will meet at the lodge at 6 p.m. Everyone will bring sandwiches, chips and dip. We will eat dinner around 7:30 p.m. Then make up our faces and have contests and play games.

Our November social, on the 19th, will be a campout on Donnie and Sherry McKenney's thirty acres. We will meet at their home at 2:30 p.m.

Saturday to clear out our campsite and set up the shelter; that night, we will have water gun fights and a hot dog cookout.

The first Saturday, December 3, Crockett has Christmas - on - the square in Downtown Crockett. Our youth club is going to rent a space, and set up tables to make and sell tacos and cokes.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge No. 9, Snook, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother JOSEPH [JAY] ZUBIK, who passed away on June 21, 1988, at Bohne Memorial Hospital in Brenham, Texas. He had attained the age of 82 years.

Brother Zubik was born on July 8, 1905 in Snook, Texas. His parents were the late Martin and Annie (Sebesta) Zubik. He Was baptized in the Snook Czech - Moravian Brethren Church on August 3, 1905 and confirmed in that church on September 26, 1920 by Rev. Frank H. Horak.

He attended Snook schools and later attended Tyler Commercial College.

He was married to Minnie Skopik.

She preceded him in death on October 14, 1934.

Brother Zubik was married later to Lydia Carolyn Kettler on February 14, 1937, in the Zion Lutheran Church near Brenham by Rev. Karl Mueller.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Brenham, the American Legion Post No. 48 and also a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 9 of Snook. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Brother Zubik and his wife, Lydia, owned and operated Jay's Cafe in Brenham for 29 years. He enjoyed raising cattle, hunting, fishing, gardening and dancing.

Funeral services for Brother Zubik were held on Friday, June 24, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in enham, with Pastors Edwin Lampe and Brian Nunnally officiating.

Interment followed in the Prairie Lea Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents, his brother, Henry Adamek, two nephews and two nieces.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia Zubik of Brenham; his nieces, Milady Junek and Lydia Weidemann of Somerville, Tracy Gaas and Annie Hejl of Houston and Ella Mae Macik of Texas City, plus numerous other relatives and friends.

Brother Zubik is missed by all of us who knew him May our departed friend and brother rest in eternal peace.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 84 in alias.

Services were held on September 26th at David Clayton and Sons Chapel in Duncanville, Texas. Rev. Lindsay Cofield and Rev. Robert Fitzhugh officiated. Interment was at Little Bethel.

ExpresSion Of Sympathy The undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood, on behalf of the officers and entire membership, expresses our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our lodge brother JOSEPH F. STIBOREK, 89, of Grand Prairie, formerly of West and Ross, who died Sunday afternoon at a Grand Prairie nursing home.

A rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. at Kotch Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian burial was held at 10 a.m.

Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West, with Monsignor Ray Widacki as celebrant. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery in West.

Mr. Stiborek was born March 16, 1899 in Czechoslovakia. He had lived most of his life in the West and Ross areas and had been a resident of Grand Prairie for the last seven years. He served in the Marines during World War I. He also was a retired farmer.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council No. 2305 in West, and SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosie Stiborek in 1964.

Survivors include two sons, Ben Stiborek of South Lake and Leon Stiborek of Grand Prairie; a daughter, Mary Bassett of Grand Prairie; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

Features CESAT Meeting Scheduled The quarterly Executive Committee meeting of The Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas has been scheduled by President Roger Kolar for Saturday, October 22, at the Library and Museum Meeting Room in La Grange. The Executive Committee meeting will begin at 10 a.m. and the Matice will meet at noon.

As always, the Executive Committee meeting is open to all members. The next general membership meeting will be held in the spring.

President Kolar urges all members to keep their memberships current and emphasizes the organization's need for additional members. All persons who share CESAT's goal of promoting Czech Studies and preserving Czech culture and heritage in Texas are welcome to become members.

Novak, Winnett Awarded CESAT Scholarships John Novak, a Phd candidate in music theory, and Michael Winnett, graduate student in Czech linguistics, have been awarded scholarships by the Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas for the 1988 - 89 academic year.

Novak receives the Micek Scholarship of $2,000 for the two semesters, while Winnett is granted $1,000 for the final semester of his Master's program.

John Novak continues his education at The University of Texas at Austin where he concluded his Master's work with his thesis, A Synthesis of Style in the Piano Music of Leos Janacek. He has studied Czech language extensively as a means of better understanding the Czech composers, particularly Janacek, whom he is emphasizing in his work. Novak presented a paper and performed at the Czech Music in Texas Symposium in 1986 and recently participated in the International Conference of Janacek and Czech Music in St. Louis. Novak performs on piano and accordian in both classical and folk idioms.

Mike Winnett received his undergraduate degree in Czech from The University of Texas at Austin where he is presently completing work on his Master's thesis on distributive verbs in the Czech language. Between degrees, Winnett taught Czech for a year at Flatonia High School. He has done research and made presentations on varied Czech literary and folkloric subjects, most recently on Czech Watersprites at the UT Conference of Czech Students and Teachers in April.

Winnett has also studied translation and is currently working on literary translations from Czech to English.

Both recipients have studied in Czechoslovakia.

Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary Celebrated On Sunday, September 25, 1988, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Kolacny happily celebrated their fifty years of marriage with family and friends at a reception and dinner at SPJST Lodge No. 88.

Out - of - town guests were present from Moulton, Shiner, San Antonio and Pasadena. Presiding over the registration table were their granddaughters, Susan Kolacny and great - niece, Pam Knox. Sons, Jerry Lewis and Eugene and wives, Patsy and Amber greeted the guests and served as hosts and hostesses.

Beverages and snacks were served as the guests visited and, at 5 o'clock, a

barbecue dinner was served by Wehring Caterers.

Bessie's brothers, Rudy and Edward Miculka with their spouses, Angeline and Ellen were present and so was Georgia, Jerry's sister with her husband, Harry Meyer.

Mr. and Mrs. Kolacny were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moulton, Texas at 11 a.m. on Sunday, September 25, 1938.

Edward Miculka acted as Master of Ceremony and told some interesting and amusing tales of Jerry and Bessie's fifty years of togetherness.

Couple Honored On Their Anniversary Daniel and Leona Nors celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a supper and dance reception on Saturday, October 8th at Linden Hall in Elm Mott.

Hosting the reception were the couple's children, Marvin and Barbara Brem, Eugene and Mary Ann Nors, Danny Ray and Jennifer Nors.

Daniel Nors and. the former Leona Trlica were married on October 10, 1938 at West.

Daniel Nors is retired from Broadmore Mobile Home Company, and Leona Nors is retired from The Lorch Company.

The couple has five grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Nors are members of SPJST Lodge No. 66, Waco.

Mrs. Bobby D. Walden

Walden - Skrhak Wedding Cheryl Ann Skrhak of Rogers became the bride of Bobby Dan Walden of Belton in a double - ring ceremony Saturday, September 24, 1988 at Visitation Catholic Church in Westphalia.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Skrhak of Rogers and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Bonkowski of Bartlett. The bridegroom is the son of Mrs. Ruth Walden of Belton and the late Bill Walden and grandson of Mrs. Alice Walden of Austin.

The Rev. Aleck Lazek officiated.

Music was by Becky Roessler of Seaton, organist and pianist; Wayne Shirley of San Antonio, soloist and guitarist and Jane Fuchs of Rogers, soloist and flutist.

Given in marriage by her parents, the bride wore a formal gown of crystalline over slipper satin, high shadow neckline and fitted bodice with beaded silk finish swirl lace rennaissance sleeves and full skirt with appliques of lace, the hemline flowing to a cathedral train enhanced by cascading ruffles. The full - length veil had a poof in back with tiny prisms to catch the light and mother - of - pearl beads with lily - of - the - valley on the side and trailing down the back. The bride carried a full bouquet consisting of white gardenias, baby's breath, lily of - the - valley and accented with yellow roses.

The mother of the bride wore a full length ivory satin gown overlaid with ivory lace. The mother of the groom wore a royal blue gown accented with a blue satin bow at the shoulder. Their corsages were made of white carnations with yellow roses and pearl beads.

Maid of honor was Vicki Barrera of Heidenheimer. Matron of honor was Anna Macha, sister of the bride of Rogers. Bridesmaids were Robyn Skrhak, sister - in - law of the bride of Rogers, Catherine Cox of Seaton, Lisa Coots of Burlington and Lynda Motl of Seaton. They were floor - length emerald green taffeta dresses with ruffles on the bottom and a bow at the back. They carried lighted candles surrounded by yellow flowers.

Best man was Gary Brice of Comanche. Groomsmen were John Macha, brother - in - law of the bride of Rogers, James Skrhak, brother of the bride of Rogers, Mickey Phillips of Eula, William Kirby of Belton and Wayne Fajkus of Belton.

Flower girl was Sarah Shirley of San Antonio. Ring Bearer was Timothy Skrhak of Granger.

Seating guests were Michael Skrhak of Granger and Scott Ansay of Temple.

Altar boys were Keith Hering and Jason Hering of Cyclone. Reader was Dorothy Tepera of Rogers. Gift Bearers were Paul and Lillie Bonkowski of Belton, the bride's godparents.

The mothers walked in to the song "Wedding Song - There is Love;" the bridesmaids walked in to the flute and guitar playing "The Theme from Thorn Birds" and the bride came in to the organ playing the traditional "Wedding Chorus." The couple's special song was "Til I Loved You." Offeratory song was "Only A Shadow;" Communion song was "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do;" pray to Mary song was "You Are Near" and the "Bridal March" was played as the wedding party went out.

The couple was honored with a reception; barbecue dinner and private dance with music provided by Charles Mikeska and The Sensations at Westphalia Parish Hall.

Houseparty members were Bob and Elna Persky of Rogers, Leland and Ruby Jungmann of Rogers, Marie Macha of Marlin, Marilyn Barrera of Heidenheimer and Marilyn Cox of Seaton. Guest register was Kathy Billeck of Rogers. Serving the bride's cake were Donna Williams of Rogers and Nancy DeWeese of Zabcikville.

Serving the groom's cake were Tracie Malovets of Red Ranger and Keyla Faglie of Rogers.

After a wedding trip to Bastrop State Park, the couple is living in Rogers.

Anna and John Halamicek

Halamicek Reunion Held At La Grange The 1988 reunion of the John M. Halamicek and Anna (Baron) Halamicek family was held at the VFW Hall in La Grange, Texas on Saturday, June 25, 1988 with about 200 descendants present.

Albina Halamicek Hilsher and the late Chas. Hilsher family hosted the gathering. Rev. David Bernshausen, great - grandson, offered Grace before a delicious noon meal of barbecued beef and chicken with all the trimmings.

Following the meal, Josephine Pflughaupt welcomed all in attendance and the business meeting was held and pictures were taken of all the families, etc.

Since the 1986 reunion seven (7) descendants passed away, namely, Annie Kopecky, Olan Cordes, Wanda Cordes, Victor Havran, Frank Halamicek, Jody Kopecky and Clarence Kopecky. A few momentos of silence for personal prayers were observed.

Gerald Hilsher traveled the greatest distance; from Washington, D.C. The oldest lady present was Bessie Halamicek, age 86 years. Ben Halamicek, 80 years, was the oldest man. Ten - week - old Tracy L. Gindart, granddaughter of Bob and Ruth Martinek, was the youngest baby present.

There were three present of the original twelve (12) children, namely, Vlasta Teplicek, Bertha Lancaster and Ben Halamicek.

The next Halamicek reunion will be held in 1990 and will be hosted by the Julie (Halamicek) Havlik family at a later announced date.

Mr. Halamicek came to Texas in 1869.

Chronicle Facts Of John M. Halamicek -- 1674 The wonderful success which has attended the career of John M. Halamicek of Roznov, Fayette County, a country community six miles north of Fayetteville, Texas, attests the sagacity, foresight and financial skill with which his various ventures have been directed. The life of the merchant is less conspicuous before the world than that of a member of a learned profession, or of one who mingles in public affairs, but is nonetheless of arduous labor and thorough engrossment. In no other calling in life is success so sure a gauge of uncommon power.

1675 -- Mr. Halamicek has lived in the County of Fayette since 1870, and in the State of Texas since 1869, in which year he came from Moravia (Czechoslovakia), the Town of Roznov, where he was born March 7, 1855. His father was John Halamicek, a baker by trade, a vocation which he

followed while residing in his native land. His forefathers had been indigenous to that locality for generations, and his father, the grandfather of John M., Joseph Halamicek, was a weaver by vocation.

The heads of families of this name seem to have been tradesmen or mechanics and as a rule were people in moderate circumstances. John Halamicek, father of John M., was the only one to emigrate to the United States, and to him is due the establishment of the family in the State of Texas.

John Halamicek was married twice, his first wife being Margaret Kubis, who bore him three children, only two of whom came to mature years, namely, John, of this notice, and Frances, who is the widow of Jo Blaha, of Fayette County.

John Halamicek sailed with his two children from Bremen, Germany, on one of the early steamships bound for Baltimore, Maryland, and from the latter city, without delay, took the train for Cincinnati. Thence he went to Cairo, Illinois, where he took a steamboat for New Orleans, which southern city was reached by the family in November. The father then came on to Texas and joined some old - country friends, Barosa and Liska, at Frelsburg. He found himself without money sufficient to engage in farming on his own account, so he hired out on the farm and his children did likewise when they followed him to Frelsburg the following summer. In addition, they earned some small money picking cotton, and worked at whatever other honorable employment presented itself.

In 1872 John Halamicek was able to buy an ox - team, and at that time started farming for himself at old "Rock House," Fayette County. He also had a horse, but only such implements as were absolutely necessary to make a crop. He was a renter of Mr. Pargel and the first year made eight bales of cotton and plenty of corn. The next year he rented from Mr. Salik, a forty - acre track of land, but his crop was somewhat a failure as to cotton. In 1874 Mr. Halamicek died, at the age of 56 years, and this left alone the children, who stayed together and moved over to Warrenton, continuing to engage in farming as renters. They remained together for three years, at the end of which time Miss Halamicek was married, and her brother helped her and her husband to make one crop and then started agricultural operations on his own account.

John M. Halamicek secured his educational training before he came to Texas. When he launched his bark alone, in 1875, he went to Ellinger, where he secured a place in the lumber yard of McCormick and Hall, remaining there Three years and saving a small amount of money from his wages. Subsequently, he became a clerk in that village for Jo Krenek, with whom he remained a few months, after which he secured employment with Charley Rosenberg, as clerk, at a wage of $45 and house rent, and remained there fourteen months.

In 1885 Mr. Halamicek left Ellinger and came to Roznov. A business had been operated here by Charley Prasifka, having been started by Mr. Walt, and Mr. Halamicek rented the Lone Store building, which had a store room in front and a residence of one room in the rear. He started his business venture with $300, and his first stock was purchased of the wholesale house of William Cleveland, of Houston. In a few months his stock

began to grow and it expanded gradually to its present dimensions. In 1900 it was found necessary for Mr. Halamicek to add another building to accommodate his increased business, and different lines of goods have been made a part on his stock. In time, Mr. Halamicek became able to spare money from his business to invest in land. He purchased the thirty - acre tract of land upon which his store is located first, and subsequently bought a 500 - acre tract on Cicar Creek, from Mrs. P. Fagg, this being a part of the Robert Peebles League. He has since built eight residences on his property for the accommodation of his tenants, and his crops are the usual corn and cotton. He more recently purchased 200 acres in the Thomas Gay League, and 150 acres in the Greenville League.

He has added tenant houses on his property, too, and his home in the hamlet of Roznov is a two - story residence of seven rooms. In addition he owns five sections of ranch land in Upton County, Texas, fenced and improved with ranch houses. All that Mr. Halamicek owns has been accumulated through his own exertions, combined with those of his wife, a lady of most marked business abilities who continues to be of great assistance to her husband in all his business transactions.

Mr. Halamicek became a citizen of the United States as a young man, and has taken a good citizen's interest in public affairs. A democrat in his political views, his only public service has been as school trustee, a capacity in which he has acted for twenty - six years. Personally, Mr. Halamicek gives one the idea of being possessed of irresistible energy, virility and spirit, thoroughly sure of his course of action before he enters a transaction, and then forcible and rapid in the attainment of his object.

At Ellinger, Texas on January 24, 1882, Mr. Halamicek was married to Miss Anna Baron, daughter of Paul and Rosa (Kanarik) Baron, whose children were as follows: Rosina, who is the wife of Peter Krystik; Mary, who married Leopold Bruner; Anna, born August 25, 1865, at Halenkov, Moravia; Paul, of Runnels County, Texas; Josephine, who married John Pustejovsky; and Frances, who died single.

To Mr. and Mrs. John M. Halamicek, there have been born the following twelve (12) children: (1) John A. Halamicek, a physician and surgeon of El Campo, Texas married Frances Frnka, and has four children: Johnny and his wife, Kathelen; Evelyn Halamicek; Frank" and his wife, Ella, and Arlene.

(2) Willie A. Halamicek, a merchant and rancher of San Angelo, Texas married Julia Baron; has eight children: Adeline (Halamicek) Carper, Dorine (Halamicek) Droll and husband, Henry; Pauline (Halamicek) Anderson and husband, Zada; Manine (Halamicek) Aldred; Eugene Halamicek and wife, Jimmie; Wandien (Halamicek) Teague and husband, J.W.; William (Bill) A. Halamicek, Jr. and wife, Doris; and Joyceline Mae. (3) Julie (Halamicek) Havlik married Professor Charles Havlik of Roznov, Texas now Sweet Home, Texas has nine children: Ladimir (Lad) Havlik and wife Jetta; Lillie Mae (Havlik) Keilers and husband, Atlan; Anita (Havlik) Havran and husband, Victor; Charles J.
