October 6, 1988 The Supreme Lodge Board has revised the SPJST Scholarship Application Deadlines to allow for the winning student to be recognized before their peers at each winners' respective high school awards' ceremony.

Application may be made during the high school senior year. Scholarships will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school, or its equivalent.

College undergraduates may apply for a scholarship for the next school year.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE Applicants must be qualified members of the SPJST. Qualified members are those having an active SPJST insurance certificate in force. The certificate must be in force one year at the time of application to be considered.

The Supreme Lodge Officers and Directors have revised the SPJST Scholarship deadline so that the Scholarship Winners can be recognized at the 'Awards' Ceremony" of their respective school.

SELECTION OF ACCREDITED COLLEGE AND DEGREE Scholarship winners may attend any college that has programs leading to a Bachelor's Degree in the United States of America accredited by a recognized

accrediting body. Negotiations for admission must be conducted entirely by the scholarship applicant.

2. Hold an active SPJST insurance certificate for the duration of the scholarship.

3. Return the application below by Dec. 31 of this year. By sending in this application we then will send you the forms needed to apply along with appropriate instruction.

4. Accept the decision of our highly qualified Committee Members as final.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge has absolutely no influence in these decisions.

SPJST First Annual Volleyball Tournament The Supreme Lodge Board has approved the First Annual SPJST Volleyball Tournament for members 16 and over.

Each lodge is eligible to have two (2) teams represent their lodge at the district playoffs. The first and second place winners in the district will represent their district at the state finals.

Contact your local lodge officer about setting up a team for your lodge.

Teams must notify the District Youth

Counselor of their entry in the tournament. The District Youth Counselor will be the coordinator for their respective district.

The State Tournament will be held November 5, 1988 in Temple.

There will be prizes given at the district and the state level.

The officers have planned a very exciting day with two new contests, a kolache contest and a volleyball tournament. VI Fall Social And Meeting

District

Dear Fellow District VI Members: This year's district social and meeting will be held on October 30 at Leo's Restaurant located at Victoria Regional Airport.

Registration will begin at 11 p.m.

The serving of the free catered meal will begin at 12 noon.

The short meeting will be called to order at 1:05 p.m, followed by the Presentation of Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance.

The welcome will be by Lodge No. 32 President with the response by District VI 1st Vice President.

A tribute to our deceased members will be read by District VI 2nd Vice President. A candle will be lit during that time.

The SPJST Motto will be read by the District VI Youth Counselor, members are to shake hands with their neighbors at that time.

The DYC will then give a short report on District VI Royalty.

Lodge 32 met on Wednesday, September 14, 1988. Vice President Adolph Motal presided over the meeting in the absence of President John Motal. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, followed by a moment of silence for our departed members, roll call of officers, reading of minutes and treasurer's report.

The threat of Hurricane Gilbert kept a lot of members away, but the few of us in attendance had a good meeting.

We are so thankful that Gilbert went to the south and left our area safe, but we could have used a little more rain!

Everyone is reminded of the District VI Fall Meeting and Family Fun - Day to be held on Sunday, October 30th.

The location has been changed to Leii's Feed Lot Restaurant at Victoria Regional Airport. We hope families of all ages come out for a good noon meal and an afternoon full of fun and entertainment.

I'd also like to remind everyone of The Czech Heritage Society's Czech Fest on Sunday, October 16th at The Bluebonnet Convention Center. I hear a big day is being planned so let's go out and support their organization.

Dear SPJST Members: The monthly meeting for September 1988 for Pasadena Lodge No. 172 began at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28th. The welcome in Czech and English started our meeting by President Alvin Sefcik.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by 1st Vice President Irving Theiss.

All officers and committee chairpersons were present. Secretary Carla Krenek read the minutes of our last executive and monthly meetings, which were approved after a correction. Thank you letters were received from Sister Tennie Walla and also from the Travis Shelton family.

All the committee reports were given and accepted. These reports show that our lodge is doing well.

New and delayed business included obtaining our new beer and wine license and the improvements to our rest rooms. Our Gulf Coast Czech Festival business was updated and we would like for more members to help donate items of art and craft to our

general store; anything that any member can sew, cook, or make will be appreciated by Sisters Vlasta Machann and Vicki Dressler.

At this time I want to thank the 40 members who surprised the writer with his birthday party which was given prior to our meeting. It is a nice feeling to have so many good friends. The food and friendship were warm and well received. Thank you again.

The Saturday night dances are still going strong and the Entertainment Committee is now putting together a fine schedule for 1989. The social dinner and dance held September 25th were well received and a special thanks to Joe Krenek for preparing the meat dishes.

Again, all members of the SPJST Society remember the dates of November 5th and 6th and please make it' a point to attend the Gulf Coast Czech Festival in Pasadena.

Many new and enjoyable events will be held this year. We will publish a schedule in later issues of the Vestnik.

Lodge

The September meeting of Lodge No. 177, Academy was called to order at 7:33 p.m. The Pledge was recited and roll call of officers showed Josie Tomastik absent.

Mrs. Ray Ybarra was our visitor.

Minutes from our last meeting were read and approved.

Three new members, Ray Ybarra and Regina and Renelle Wright were all approved by a unanimous show of hands.

Youth Club Leader Sheryl Wiest thanked the Kitchen Committee for permitting them to sell sandwiches on games night and Adopt - A - Highway signs to be put up for the youth club.

Sympathy cards were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Juan Santiago, Jessie Castillo and Claude Chaney.

Trustees' Report -- finally the bathrooms were discussed; with much prodding, bids were gotten on the bathrooms and games chairperson to replace the blower.

Members, I'm proud to announce, after 12 years, our lodge is paid for FREE and CLEAR --- thanks to one and all who worked for our lodge the last 12 years. I could probably 'name you, but I won't for fear of leaving one person's name out who contributed your time; you know who you are, so give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. Plans will be forthcoming for our note burning.

Sheryl Wiest, youth club leader, asked for the use of the hall for a youth club dance for October 21st and was granted permission.

A Nominating Committee was chosen and those being on the committee are Bill Hutka, Helen Bland and Libbie Bartek.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned and a supper of sausage and beans was enjoyed by all.

Thanks to Alex for helping to get the supper served. We missed you Harvey at our meeting.

Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities News Dear Members: It's been a long time since you heard from Lodge 183; I need to tell you members that things are about normal at our lodge. At the last meeting, a committee was appointed to name the "Fraternalist of the Year." The committee members are Rudy Rejcek, Ed Kral and Mary Ann Roznovsky.

A Nominating Committee was also appointed to nominate new officers for the year 1989 and they are Mary Ann Roznovsky, Charlie Bragg and B.J. Hlavaty. If you want to have an office or know someone who would like to have an office next year, please let them know.

These committees will report back in the November meeting. Bring a covered dish and we all will have a party after the meeting.

It was noted that Leon Stiborek's father passed away and also that Rudy Rejcek's sister passed away. The lodge sends their prayers to these families.

"Happy Birthday" was sung for two members, Daniel Roznovsky and Angeline Stiborek having birthdays in September.

Gracie's mother is proud to tell the world that there are five generations in her family now; also, if you can count step - grandchildren, step - great grandchildren and step - great - great grandchildren, there are five generations in mother's family now.

Needless to say, Gracie and I are proud of our great - grandson. He is a little over a year old now and we just have been able to get pictures of the five generations together.

Gracie and I attended the 19th annual Oktoberfest in Fort Worth on October 1st. Two good friends of ours, Martha Morey and Gerhard Leihsel, were married on stage Bavarian - style with honor guards in colorful costumes The bride and groom walked under crossed swords and the wedding vows were repeated in German. Martha wore a maroon dirndl -- a German costume and a flowered wreath. Gerhard wore lederhosen with suspenders with short pants worn in the Alps. A dance troupe carried colorful bouquets and performed a number of German dances after the wedding.

We are all members of the Fort Worth German - American Club and, with the help of the club, Fort Worth

On Sunday, October 2nd, the Bergermiester (Mayor) and his wife from Trier, Germany came by the booth to meet members of the Fort Worth group. Martha and Gerhard and about six other members of the German - American Club attended the signing of the sister city pact earlier this year.

I need to get this into the mail hoping it will get in the October 12th issue.

So, until then, just keep smiling and the whole world will keep on smiling with you.

Lodge No 187 A Very Busy Summer

dancing, or listening to music or just catching up on some needed socializing. These activities are also the life blood of the lodge and, without them, the lodge would have a difficult time paying all the bills. And we certainly do appreciate all of the support that we receive from the local and surrounding communities. But we cannot forget that except for a few salaried employees, all of the work that goes on at the lodge is on a volunteer basis, so the more we have the more we have to ask our friends, neighbors and relatives to come out and help make sure everything runs smoothly, and it is to these fine folks that the Board of Trustees and Officers of Lodge 187 would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and gratitude. Thanks for sharing your time and talents so unselfishly with those around you.

A "Thank goodness the summer is over TIP Party" will be held on Sunday, October 23rd to try and express our appreciation to all of the fine folks who came out and helped in some form or fashion at the lodge. A social period will begin at 3 p.m. and a catered meal will follow. Who knows, may he we will all finally be able to take a few minutes to relax!

When summertime comes around, most people think of participating in some form of relaxation like fishing, or going to a ball game, or taking a little vacation to try and get away from it all, but someone forgot to tell the folks at Lodge 187 in Round Rock that the summer was a time to relax, because instead of slowing down and taking it easy this past summer, they increased the number of activities that are normally held at the lodge.

Just about any given Friday and Saturday night during the year, you will find a lot of fine folks enjoying themselves at one of the many dances held at Lodge 187. So, depending on the number of weekends in a particular month, the normal Friday and Saturday night dances account for 8 to 10 activities each month, and the lodge is always happy to book may be one or two extra activities during a month.

But, in and around the months of June and July, an extra nine activities were held by the lodge. It all started with separate high school graduation parties held for members of the Round Rock, Taylor, and Georgetown students. The city of Weir held a fund raising dance on June 19 and featured Sammy Allred and The Gezenslaw Brothers. Approximately 1,000 people attended New Sweden 88 on June 26 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first Swedish settlers to Texas.

July started off with a bang when Johnny Dee and The Rocket 88's were, featured at this year's annual Fourth of July Round Rock Policemen's Association Benefit. A battle dance between the Debonaries and the People's Choice was held on July 17th.

Four brave adults from Lodge 187 escorted seven very excited kids to Camp Val Verde to participate in this year's SPJST Camp held from July 21st to 24th. A large crowd of over 700 were present at this summer's Polka Pfest which featured three bands including Fritz Hodde, The Vrazels, and The Leo Majek Orchestra. The Polka Pfest was such a success that the Board of Trustees are considering another Polka Pfest some time in the winter.

All of these activities provide both families and friends, and young and old alike with an opportunity to get together to enjoy themselves by

Several items of interest were discussed following the election of the 1989 officers. The American - Czech Culture Society will sponsor the 48th American - Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday, October 16, 1988.

The day will start with kolace and kava social at 8 a.m., then at 9 a.m. with a Catholic Mass (with Czech singing) at the Magnolia Lounge located at First and Grand streets (by the Lagoon).

The program will start at 11 a.m. af the Band Shell (also by the Lagoon) with the singing of the American and Czech national anthems, accompanied by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Cyril (Sid) Pokladnik. There will be a promenade of authentic Czech costumes, dancing of the Czech national dance "Ceska Beseda," children's programs, Czech singing, presentation of the American - Czech King and Queen and the longest married American - Czech couple, Czech refreshments, Czech souvenirs, accordian music and much more.

At the Marine Corp Square from 2 to 3 p.m., there will be Sokol exhibition featurin g gymnasts from Dallas, Ennis, Fort Worth, Houston, and West; from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., there will be a Czech program on the Texaco Star Stage (at Big Tex).

County Chapter Of The Czech Heritage Society Of Texas And The San Jacinto Czech Club And SF ST Lodge Rozkvet No. 172

The 1988 Gulf Coast Czech Festival will be held on Saturday, November 5, and Sunday, November 6, at SPJST Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, Pasadena, Texas. The festival is sponsored jointly by the San Jacinto Czech Club, the Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas and SPJST Lodge No. 172.

Activities will begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 5, with a meeting of the Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. After a short business meeting, some of the members will give brief talks on their recent visits to Czechoslovakia.

Following the Heritage Society meeting, there will be two hours of Czech singing. First, at 7 p.m. by a newly - formed group from El Campo called the Singing Czechs, under the direction of Frank Milder, and, at 8 p.m., by the East Bernard Czech Singers, under the direction of Martha Viktorian, The Henry Repka Band will furnish music for the evening dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The highlight of the evening will be the Gulf Coast Championship Polka and Waltz Contest at 10 p.m.

Sunday, November 6, includes a full day of activities. Doors will open at 9 a.m. with kolache and coffee available Everyone can take advantage of the morning hours to visit the several displays of family histories, early Texas - Czech memorabilia and a mini - museum from the SPJST Supreme Lodge. The exhibits will be open all day. Sunday's activities will officially start at 11 a.m.

with the singing of the United States and Czech national anthems by Helen Hegwood. A roast beef and sausage dinner will be served starting at 11:15 a.m. at a cost of only $4 per plate. A brief address by a representative from the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C. will be given at 12 noon. The afternoon's entertainment includes performances by the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Vastimil Kovanda and the Lodge 88 Choral Group, under the direction of Tim Kostom, starting at 12:30 p.m.; a dance, to the music of the Vanek Polka Band from Victoria from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. including the Parade of Czech Costumes at 3 p.m.; the Czech Heritage Singers of Galveston County at 4:30 p.m.; and, to close out the festival, another dance to the music of the Wence Shimek Band of Hallettsville from 5:15 to 9 p.m.

The public is cordially invited.

Everyone who has a Czech costume (kroj) is encouraged to wear it. Those who are not of Czech ancestry are welcome to wear their native costume, the committee will declare it an official Texas - Czech costume for the day.

SPJST Ornament Contest Guidelines All ornaments must be homemade -No store bought finished ornaments allowed. Ornaments must be youth club member's own creation. No pre assembled kits. Styrofoam balls are allowed.

Ornaments will be judged at the District fall meeting. The DYC will be in charge of securing judges and ribbons. There will be one winner in each age group category; 6 - 9, 10 - 12, 13 - 14 and 15 - 17.

Size of Ornament -- No larger than 3 inches in width, 3 inches in length, 3 inches in height

The four winning ornaments from each district will be sent to the Supreme Lodge via the DYC where they will be placed on an SPJST State Youth Club Christmas Tree in the Museum.

The afternoon of games and fellowship was enjoyed by all.

The finale of the afternoon was a very delicious and plentiful meal served by the host Lodge No. 18, Elgin.

Dear Members and Friends: The youth club meeting was held after our Lodge 6 meeting with a good attendance.

September 18th, the youth club members and parents went to Six Flags on a very nice day, which was enjoyed by all of us.

Our club members donated cakes to Riges and St. Elizabeth Center, canned goods to Caritas, items to St. Martin's Picnic, Penelope Church Ba77ar, and agreed to bring cakes to the West Rest Haven's Birthday Party on October 5th.

Dear Readers: We, at Lodge No. 39, Bryan have a busy schedule ahead of us until the end of the year. We will be participating in the Czech Festival which will be held at our lodge home on October 22nd. The youth will be doing face painting and a number of game booths.

The month of November will be devoted to hard work preparing a float for the Holiday Parade which will be December 4th. Hopefully, we'll still find time to go bowling and play volleyball, also during this busy time.

10/VESTNIK—Wednesday, October 12, 1988 December 3rd will be our Christmas Party at the lodge home and the youth will be presenting a program.

We also have plans to make candy reindeer and distribute them while we go Christmas caroling to nursing homes.

We've taken up donations for Halloween candy to give to the Mental Health and Retardation Foundation for a party.

For our November charity project, we will bring canned foods to donate to the Brazos Valley Food Pantry. Be sure to check your calendar I sent out for the schedule of events, charity projects and craft projects.

47 Youth Plans Activities

Dear Readers:.

The past few months have been very busy and exciting for members of Lodge No. 47. We are very proud to have our own Daryl Kortis representing SPJST as State King; Daryl, we are all very proud of you and keep up the good work.

Congratulations to all our District II and State winners. We are also very proud of each of you.

Our Beseda circles have been busy dancing at many area activities. The most performances were at the Westfest, Granger Main Street Project, and Scott and White Activities Day. All members reported having a great time at the District II Six Flags trip.

The District II fall meeting was very successful. Frankie, you once, again, did a superb job! Congratulations to our winners in the Christmas Tree Ornament Contest. We had 7 entries -winners included Daryl Kortis and E. J. Pechal, first place; David Kortis, second place and Erin Skrabanek, third place. Other participants were James Kortis, Gary Skrabanek and Shannon Pechal.

Our busy month of September ended with our annual "Lock - in."

We had a great time and a big thank you to all you kids for being so GREAT! We had a very adventurous hayride. Despite the "black hearst" following us and the sudden rain downpour we all arrived back safely and wet for hot dogs and snacks. (Not many of us got any sleep.)

Members are selling Tom Watt products for our fund - raiser. This year's merchandise is filled with many neat inexpensive items. If you need stocking stuffers or small exchange gifts for Christmas, please contact one of our members. We will be selling the merchandise until October 21st. It will arrive back to you the week of November 21st.

Members, please note: Family Night will not be held on Friday, October 21st. The date has been changed to Sunday, October 30th. We have plans for a very exciting "Halloween Evening." Hamburgers will be sold from 5 to 7:30 p.m. This time will also be set aside for games, treats, dominoes, Taroky and touring of a spookhouse. We will have prizes for the best costume in adult and youth categories. We plan to complete the evening with an adult - youth hayride.

This should be a lot of fun. Adults, you don't know what you're missing until you go on one of our youth hayrides. We want to invite everyone; neighboring lodges, we'd love to have you join us.

Our youth club is real excited about

the sponsoring of a public teen - youth dance. This dance will be held at Star Hall on Friday, October 28th. The time is set for after the football games from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Charles Mikeska and The Sensations will be playing modern and country music.

The kitchen will be open for the dance.

There will be no alcoholic beverages sold or brought in for this dance.

Please invite all your friends and come on out and enjoy a late evening of dancing.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club The October 2nd meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Daryl Kortis.

There were 32 members, 3 visitors and 7 adults present. Birthdays for October are Gary Skrabanek, Jennifer Reese, Lori Kohutek and Daryl Kortis.

Our social for October will be a "Teen Dance" on Friday, October 28th from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. (after the football games). The music will be furnished by Charles Mikeska and The Sensations. Admission will be $2.

Door prizes were won by Tammy Holt and Melanie Koslovsky.

We had a very successful District II Fall Meeting in Elgin. Seaton Lodge No. 47 came in first with most members present. On the Christmas ornaments, the Seaton Youth Club did very well in ages 6 - 9: David Kortis, 2nd place; Aaron Skrabanek, 3rd place; in ages 10 - 12: E.J. Pechal, 1st place; in ages 15 - 17: Daryl Kortis, 1st place.

The first place winners' ornaments will be placed on the Christmas Tree at the Supreme Lodge in Temple.

Don't forget the State Volleyball Tournament that will be held November 5th in Temple.

Our next meeting will be November 6th at 1 p.m.

Dear Readers, Today is October 2, 1988 and we had a meeting at our lodge home.

We had three door prizes won by Jenifer Kubin, Erin Luza and Billy Wolfe.

After our meeting we had a craft; the craft was decorating T - shirts and sweat shirts with different colors of paints. After craft we practiced volleyball with the adults. Then, we had a delicious pot luck supper after practicing volleyball. Afterwards, we went home for a good night's sleep.

On October 2nd we held our meeting at 2 p.m. President Daryl Kortis called the meeting to order.

We talked about our "Lock - in" that was Friday, September 30th.

Everyone had fun. We had 27 members at the "Lock - in." That night we also had a wiener roast and a hayride.

Our social for October will be Family Night, October 30 (which was changed from October 21st) and the Teen Dance on Friday, October 28th.

Door prizes were won by Melanie Koslovsky and Tammy Holt. We had 32 members present with 3 visitors and 7 adults.

We also talked about the District II Fall Meeting in Elgin. Seaton Lodge No. 47 had the most members present.

David Kortis won one of the youth door prizes. My Mom won a set of SPJST dominoes. They sure are pretty. Our youth club has 2 first place Christmas ornament winners. The ornaments will be placed on the Christmas Tree in the Supreme Lodge in Temple.

Lodge 160, San Angelo Youth Club Our meeting was held on September 24 at 9:30 a.m. at the Wall Fire Hall.

We had 13 members, 4 guests and 5 adults present. The Rowena Youth Club joined us at our meeting. They brought 4 members from their club.Todd Schwartz led the Pledge of Allegiance and James Lehr led the SPJST Youth Club Pledge. We welcomed our new member, Jimmie Halfmann. We discussed upcoming events for our club. In October we will have a Halloween Party in Rowena. In November we will begin practicing our program for the annual meeting to be held in December. At the annual meeting in December, we will conduct the registration table and present a program to all of the SPJST members.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Meeting Dear Sisters and Brothers, On Sunday, September 18, 1988 the youth members of District V attended a District V Family Day in Crosby, Texas; there was a good attendance of youth as well as parents at this activity.

During the adult meeting, DYC Marie Stayton announced District V Royalty winners, namely, Queen Crystal Wallace, Duchess Jamie Meyer, King Keith Kieschnick and Duke Nicholas Havemann were introduced to those attending.

Afterwards, District V Youth Club President Marlene Migl introduced youth club officers. Attending were Vice Migl, Marlene President President Crystal Wallace, Secretary Darlene Migl, Treasurer Karl Pflughaupt, Sergeant - at - Arms Michelle Linney and Reporter Paul Pflughaupt.

Later, the youth were also able to hold a meeting. There, we discussed our trip to Astroworld. This social, previously set for September 17, had been postponed due to Hurricane Gilbert. We will meet at Lodge 88, Houston on October 15 at 9 a.m. and leave promptly at 9:30 a.m. Members who own an Astroworld season pass will receive some spending money, however, everyone needs to bring additional money for refreshments or souvenirs. We will return later that evening after Astroworld closes. We also discussed our next summer's San Antonio trip to Sea World. We will begin fund - raising plans in October, so be sure and attend our fund - raisers and other events in order to be able to attend this district social. We also briefly discussed next year's camp. We will be sharing camp with District VII. Finally, it was announced that there was to be a pizza party for all those who attended. After we all returned to Houston, we all went out for pizza at Pizza Inn in Houston. It was a lot of fun and everyone really enjoyed themselves. Everyone was sad to leave when it was time to go.

In conclusion, I would like to thank all the youth who attended this District V function. It was well attended, however, I hope to see more youth of other lodges in our district at our upcoming Astroworld -social on October 15, which is a Saturday. A big thanks also to all the parents who will be involved in our future fund - raising events. Without the help of our supportive parents, the Sea World trip may not be possible.

Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karnes No. 93, Hobson, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother ADOLPH FRANK MANAK, of Poth, Texas, who died on August 18, 1988 in San Antonio State Chest

Wednesday, October 12, 1988—VESTNIK/11 Hospital. He was 78 years, 5 months and 11 days of age.

Brother Manak was born in Cyclone (Bell County) Texas to Joseph William and Cecelia Slovacek Manak. His parents moved to Poth when he was 10 months old. There he attended school, joined the SPJST, receiving his 50 year membership pin in 1984, became a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, and married Miss Annie Varnon on July 25, 1936, in the Methodist Church in Stockdale, Texas. To this union two children were born.

Brother Manak was a carpenter specializing in cabinet making and electrical installation in homes built by the Manak Builders, a firm consisting of Brother Adolph, his father and brothers. It is believed they originated the building of prefabricated homes in this area. In the 1930s, electricity on farms was scarce and Mr. Manak pre cut lumber in his home workshop, hauled it to the building site, and there assembled it into homes. Today Karnes and Wilson Counties have a goodly number of these homes still in use.

Brother Manak took a leave of absence from this work to serve in the Coast Guard during World War II, 1942 - 1945 and retired in 1965. He then worked in maintenance for USAA in San Antonio for 10 years.

During this time, he developed an interest in photography and became an unofficial photographer for Poth High School.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Manak; daughter, Mrs. Linda Lyssy; son, Kenneth Manak and wife, Betty, all of Poth; sisters, Mrs. Vlasta Prasek of Karnes City and Mrs. Cecelia Young of Poth; four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Louis Balderach on Saturday, August 20 at 2 p.m. in Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Poth.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Novy Tabor No. 17, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister ANGELINE MIKESKA, who passed away Sunday morning, August 21, 1988 in Burleson County Hospital.

Mrs. Mikeska was born in Fayetteville, Texas to the late John Drab and Mary Svrcek Drab. She had lived in Burleson County for 32 years, first in the Cooks Point area and the past several years in the Deanville area.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She was married to Joe W. Mikeska on August 22, 1943 in Fort Worth. He preceded her in death on May 6, 1979.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Edwin Floyd Mikeska on April 11, 1988.

Surviving are six sons, Joe Mikeska, John Mikeska and Gene Mikeska of Bryan, Charles Mikeska and Clyde Mikeska, both of Houston and Floyd Mikeska of Caldwell; three daughters, Mary Burns of Houston, Charlene Skrabanek and Margaret Mikeska of

Caldwell; a twin sister, Frances Orsak of Hallettsville and number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 23 in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Monsignor Emilian Folytn officiating. Interment was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Mike Mikeska, James Mikeska, Curtis Mikeska, Charles Mikeska, Doug Burns and Ray Burns.

He retired after 34 years as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service.

Teresa was born in Fort Worth but lived, most of her life, in Crowley. She attended the Crowley's High School and was an active member of the high school marching band and the National Honor Society.

She was a member of St. Ann's

WARREN, age 83, of Corpus Christi, who died at a local nursing home on Sunday, September 25, 1988.

She moved from Taylor, Texas to Corpus Christi in 1953. She had been a member of the SPJST for over 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles D. Warren; her beloved children: a son, Ivan J. Warren; a daughter, Naoma J. Herndon and also a grandson, David Herndon.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m.

Features Jaroslav Belik Jaroslav Belik was born in Vsetin, Czechoslovakia in 1944 under Nazi rule. He moved to Rosenberg, Texas in 1985. Thus there was a completion of a cycle, because his great - grandfather came from Czechoslovakia in 1868 to Wharton County, Texas. His grandmother, Emilie Orsak, was born in Fayetteville (Fayette County) and went back to Czechoslovakia to visit friends and family, married and was never allowed to return to Texas. But in those early years of Jaroslav's life, his grandmother repeated many times of the good free life in a beautiful country of America. Freedom, something Jaroslav did not enjoy and often heard these stories of Texas.

Jaroslav studied to be a mechanical engineer, which in Communist eyes was far more acceptable than trying to study art and sculptor, which was his real passion. He worked with hydralic engineering during the day and studied art at night and the more Belik worked at his job at the drafting table, the more convinced he was that the mechanical pencil lines were basically the art of kinetics. This is generally defined as the movement of physical bodies in relationship to each other.

But in Czechoslovakia being a kinetic sculptor was out of the question, because electric motors and necessary material was expensive and extremely hard to obtain.

Belik became obsessed with the idea of escaping and crossing the Atlantic and live in Texas as his great grandfather, Joseph Orsak had done.

His dreams were so intense that his children, mother and father were never told of his plans. His idea entailed going to Yugoslavia to arrange a

Every Monday morning, Elverna Graeber, Olie Eixman, Nona Eixman, Ella Eisman and Merylyn Leus continue to have a sing - a - long with

kinetic art exhibition. Finally the family was granted state permission and visas to take a summer vacation in neighboring Yugoslavia, where Belik would participate in organizing "Plastiky Mobily," a kenetic art exhibition. With family documents and some drawing of his inventions stashed under his car battery, the Belik family crossed the Austrian border and to freedom. The Beliks stayed in an immigration camp hoping to come to America. This was not to be as it could be years before he would be granted permission. Finally, the Canadian government agreed and moved them to Montreal with an engineering job and apartment guarantee.

In five years, the Beliks learned to speak fluent French and were involved in the art section of Montreal. Jaroslav helped to co - find the Comtemporary Art Center of Quebec.

Then came the big break the family was dreaming of a fellow Czech, Henry Schovajsa, lawyer from La Grange, who had admired his work in Czechoslovakia on a visit, learned that he had two things in common; both of their great - grandfathers had left Czechoslovakia to settle in Texas and they turned out to be distant cousins.

Mr. Schovajsa offered to sponsor and support the move to Texas and so the family moved to Texas in 1985 and learned another language, English.

The children started school in September and as of this date three years later have made straight "A's" in all classes at school. The oldest child, Eva, has graduated with honors and is in her second year at Rice University.

Jaroslav has continued his art work and had his first solo exhibit in Houston at the Hooks - Epstein Gallery, which proved to be the most successful exhibit by this gallery. He has had several other exhibits in Texas and on Friday, September 9th from 3 to 8 p.m. he opened a six-week showing at the Wright Gallery, 4514 Travis Street in Dallas. People in Dallas area will be able to view his works and meet this energetic Czech.

The Gallery is open every day from 10 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day except Sundays.

Every Tuesday morning, Kitty Smith from Wallis comes to have Bible study with the residents. Eula Ganske from New Gulf comes to visit with the in - room residents and help them in whatever way possible. This is a great job well done. At present Eula is on vacation.

The Damon Ladies, Immanuel Ladies, Sunshine Ladies and the Presbyterian Ladies come on Thursday afternoons to have crafts with the residents. Elton Tielke comes to have sing - a - long every Thursday afternoon. Everyone enjoys the crafts and old - time songs.

Every Friday morning, Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar come to have rosary with the residents. In the afternoon, Lydia Hortmon, Melva Hastings, Freda Klawitter and Bobbie Bates come to roll hair for these residents who greatly appreciate this.

Monday afternoon, September 12, the Hope Lutheran Church of Beasley came and had services and brought cookies for the social following.

Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

The KCs came to play games Tuesday evening, September 13 and 27, with the residents. They enjoyed games and visiting with the ones present. Sorry to hear that they will be unable to continue.

Due to Hurricane Gilbert some of the activities were canceled.

Wednesday afternoon, September 28, Mary Edna Sims was surprised with a birthday party given by her children. All the residents and staff were invited. Ice cream, cake, punch and coffee were served. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

Thursday morning, September 29, Annabelle Schoppe, William Pendleton, Louis Smith, James Little, Edmund Brandl and Martha Marx (SAD) went riding down to the Bernards and close by areas. Everyone enjoyed the ride.

Happy birthdays for the month of September were residents William Pendleton, Linnie Shelton, Arnold Witte and Mary Edna Sims and staff -Florence Kramer, Paul Legendre, Delores Watson, Deanna Whitehead and Laura Meyers.

The birthday party was held Friday evening, September 30, which included

Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordian and the piano and also singing "Happy Birthday." The Unique Shop provided corsages and boutonnieres. The SIS of the Immanuel United Church of Christ provided cakes. Lydia Hortmon brought brownies and Helen Witte brought a birthday cake. Volunteers -Melva Hastings, Lydia Hortmon, Ida Gasch and Frances Muzny helped serve cake, ice cream, punch and coffee to all. The Gulf Coast Czech Singers were with us for the party and later sang to the residents in Czech and also sang a German song. The afternoon was enjoyed by all.

Thanks to all denominations of churches in our area that give services and communion and to the volunteers who do services in the home to these residents in September.

Ex.: Karel Dvorak, Wilsonovo nadra2i, Dunaj, Anglican, Cechy, Smetanova opera, "Prodand nevesta", etc., and Nage rimsko-katolicka cirkev; Velika slovanska podpurna jednota.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE—FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR—INFORMAL usage: Vy, Vam, Vag ; Ty, Tvij, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to one person. If you are referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Vam, they use a PLURAL VERB, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE ADDRESSING ONLY ONE PERSON. WRONG Vy, (1 person) jste veera jeli do mesta. Do not use a plural verb unless you are speaking to more than one person.
