Early this year, either the January or April Supreme Lodge meeting, in a discussion with your editor concerning contents of the Vestnik, Vice President Gebala brought up the fact that it would be nice and appropriate to have some "Features" about some of our SPJST members who have accomplished notable things in their work in our SPJST, community, occupation, hobby, etc. This idea was immediately supported by District VII Director Thelma Hrncir, and enthusiastically endorsed by yours truly by suggesting that they and any and all members be encouraged to send such worthy articles to be published.

At that time, Brother Gebala specifically mentioned Brother Donnie Victorick of Lodge No. 9, Snook as a young member who has accomplished much in his young life in his school work as a basketball coach and school principal.

While watching some of the Olympic Games these past two weeks at night, yours truly thought of that conversation and the many times that Brother Victorick's team has won titles for Snook in basketball. Of course, there are people who know much more about him and his accomplishments than this writer, however, he does deserve the recognition given him; he is well thought of in his district, which can be seen by the respect and support given him even outside his district.

Brother Gebala was right in mentioning him in the context of the conversation at that Supreme Lodge meeting. *** In the past week this writer was asked the question if a district can have a director and rest homes director represented by the same individual; the answer, was that District III has that situation and it works well and, if the person wishes to serve and by - laws allow it, why not! One district should not try to tell another what to do; that is why we are a democratic Society. *** Sunday, September 25th the Sokol Gymnastic Association of West had its official "ground - breaking" for their gymnasium. It is rather a coincidence that this happened right in the midst of the XXII Olympic Games of 1988 where so many gymnasts performed from all over the world. There were a number of our Sokol acquaintances and SPJST members attending the ground - breaking and gave the occasion a festive atmosphere and, at the same time, some Sokol and SPJST members were also in South Korea attending the Olympaid; to name two were Rome and Talon Milan, sons of Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan of SPJST Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth. *** It's this Saturday, October 8th when Lodge No. 92, in Fort Worth, will be celebrating its 50th observance of their lodge building. Yes, it is a long time for what members, with dedication and participation, can accomplish to be able to share their pleasure with sister lodges within the district. We wish them favorable weather and a

huge attendance because they deserve your attendance. There will be many fun things in store for you as well as plenty of entertainment and socializing. *** Regretfully, a few children who receive required vaccines against polio, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis suffer brain damage, paralysis or even death.

Parents of such children used to rely solely on the courts for compensation.

But beginning October 1, when the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 goes into effect, parents will be able to seek help first from Uncle Sam. Under the new law, parents must postpone a lawsuit and first file a $60 petition with the U.S. Claims Court, which will rule on their case within a year. If their child's injury meets certain criteria, such as symptoms occurring within a specified time after the vaccination, parents can probably expect to receive some award. They will be eligible for up to $250,000 in damages for pain and suffering and unlimited compensation for unreimbursed medical expenses.

Parents who choose to reject the court's decision can then sue the manufacturer. One goal of the new law, however, is to shield vaccine makers from the heavy liability that discourages them from making vaccines, so experts say it will be tougher for parents to recover in a trial court. For details on the law and how to file a claim, read Title 42, U.S. Code 300aa in the library, or call the Claims Court at (202) 633 - 7257. *** Due early October the American Diabetes Association's annual "Buyer's Guide to Diabetes Products" will sort out the array of devices meant to simplify diabetics' lives. Among the 19 portable blood - glucose monitoring devices listed are an electronic log and two meters that are new this year. The meters replace large older models and allow daily insulin dosage to be figured efficiently - the key to preventing organ diseases that often accompany diabetes. The Chemstrip Matchmaker displays a digital readout after you put a drop of blood on a treated paper strip and visually match it with a color key. The pocket - size device stores 10 readings. The same firm offers Merlin, a computerized log -- used with any meter -- in which you record your glucose level and data about dosage and activities, which your doctor can analyze. With most meters, you wipe the blood off the strip before you can get a reading; if done improperly, the result may be wrong. The pen - size model does not require cleaning as most other models do, but built - in batteries mean the unit will need replacing roughly every two years. Marek Reunion The eighth annual Marek family reunion will be held Sunday, October 23, 1988 at Seaton Star Hall, SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton, Texas.

Registration starts at 10 a.m. A covered dish lunch served buffet - style will be at 12:30 p.m. Each family is asked to bring a meat, vegetable and/or salad and dessert; bring enough food for your family. Coffee, tea, Koolaid, plates, cups, napkins, etc. will be furnished. A brief business meeting will be held at 2 p.m.

SPJST First Annual Volleyball Tournament The Supreme Lodge Board has approved the First Annual SPJST Volleyball Tournament for members 16 and over.

Each lodge is eligible to have two (2) teams represent their lodge at the district playoffs. The first and second place winners in the district will represent their district at the state finals.

Contact your local lodge officer about setting up a team for your lodge.

Teams must notify the District Youth

Counselor of their entry in the tournament. The District outh Counselor will be the coordinator for their respective district.

The State Tournament will be held November 5, 1988 in Temple.

There will be prizes given at the district and the state level.

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, October 5, 1988

Successful District V Family Day Dear Members: District V Family Day was quite a success in spite of Hurricane Gilbert scaring us for days! The weather was perfect, the attendance was great and all seemed to really enjoy the day.

Much credit has to be given to Lodge 65! Here we see real fraternalism at its best! Its neighboring Lodges 91 and 172 called to help, and they really did assist the hard - working members of Lodge 65. District Director Jerry Prochazka and his wife Delores lined up everything and with their helpers, everything ran smoothly.

Thank you, Lodge 65 and all you who helped them! Thank you, American Legion for letting us use the hall free of charge.

The day started with a social with drinks provided by Lodge 65 and the district. The Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra directed by Vlastimil Kovanda furnished great music enjoyed by all. They were joined by the Lodge 88 Choral Club under the direction of Tim Kostom; we all enjoyed their beautiful songs.

The dinner was super: brisket furnished by the district and so many casseroles, salads, kolache, cakes, and pies furnished by the members who came.

The meeting opened with the presentation of colors led by Karl Pflughaupt (Lodge 88), filling in for District Flag Bearer Paul Groendes who had to work. Beautiful renditions of "The Star Spangled Banner" and "Kde domov mnj" sung by Helen Hegwood.

Lod ge 65 President Robert Peel graciously welcomed us all. In giving the response First Vice President Pearl Hanka thanked the lodge for hosting so beautifully and making it a most pleasant day for us all.

President Tillie Helmcamp stated that it is great what a little lodge can accomplish with cooperation and hard work from others. She presented District Director Jerry Prochazka who gave the names of all the workers who helped to make it a memorable day for all. The workers received a big hand of applause. He also explained how, due to the hurricane, plans about the brisket were chan ged a couple of days before the event; but Willie Wehring a g reed to cater the brisket and Homer Alexander to brin g it to Crosby. With members like these, problems are easily solved!

Second Vice President Louis Hanus introduced the g uests. A special guest was Marie Pajerova of Czechoslovakia (mother of Marie Kostomlatsky). Also present were Supreme Lod g e President and Mrs. Howard Leshikar. Brother Hanus also presented President Alvin Franta and Geor gia Lostak of Lodge 91.

Our capable Secretary Tennie Walla did the roll call, and we were happy to hear that 9 lodges were represented: 65, 88, 91, 139, 142, 156, 172, 191 and 196.

Wallace and King Keith Kieschnick.

Both spoke to us and received much applause.

Our capable District Youth Counselor Marie Stayton presented Duchess Jamie Meyer and Duke Nicholas Havemann who also were applauded. Marie reminded us to go by the youth table to see the youth's accomplishments.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes Director Louis Hanus received a big hand of applause for his excellent job. Then came the election of the rest homes director. The Balloting Committee included Bennie Kocich (88), Dennis Hermis (142), Jerry Dressler (172) and Louise Pavlik (65). Louis Hanus was elected.

The president gave special recognition to District Director Jerry Prochazka, stating he did an excellent job in representing our district and in visiting all the lodges. He received a big round of applause.

The president also gave special recognition to our State Fraternalist Frances Olexa and to Professor William Souchek, who accomplishes so much with the Czech lessons.

Brother Souchek said he is uplifted in spirit by his enthusiastic students. I think the students get quite an uplift from their teacher! Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar told us about our organization working with other organizations trying to keep the legislature from making changes which would really affect us. Sister Helmcamp gave recognition to our :apable Convention Vice Chairman Larry Pflughaupt.

We had to decide the lodge to host our spring meeting. Lodge 172 President Alvin Sefcik stated his lodge would be glad to have it. The members accepted Lodge 172's invitation unanimously. The meeting is the second Sunday in March (March 12th).

Special events were announced: Gulf Coast Festival at Lodge 172, November 5 and 6, and Czech Day at Lodge 88 the last Sunday in October.

Then Rita Alexander and Lillie Spies, who had charge of registration for the prizes, had charge of the drawing with Alvin Sefcik reading the names and Homer Alexander giving the prizes. Besides the $10 and $5 prizes by the district, there were three $5 prizes donated by Irene Slovacek, Rosalee and Tim Kostom, and Louis Hanus. Alice and William Souchek donated SPJST dominoes and a beautiful book of Prague. A windbreaker, SPJST dominoes, a "Floating Pen" and an SPJST cap were donated by the Supreme Lodge.

The meeting was followed by a social when members enjoyed refreshments and the fellowship of other members. So ended a beautiful day! Thank you, all you members who came; you helped to make it a great day. And thank you Lodge 65; we will have such pleasant memories of our Family Day with you!

Of District VII Spring Meeting

Minutes

The spring meeting of District VII was held April 17, 1988 at Lodge No. 133, San Antonio at 1:10 p.m.

Brother Anthony Trilicek, president of Lod ge No. 133, welcomed members, Supreme Lod ge officers, and all officers of District VII. District VII President Brother Bob Bayer asked the membership to observe a moment of silence in

memory of deceased members since the last spring meeting.

Roll call of lodges revealed that six were represented.

District VII Director Sister Thelma Hrncir recognized first place producer in sales, Jerry Elzner of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi, also reported that Brother Frank C. Sacky is ill.

First Vice President Sister Helen Pavelka read the names of the 50 - year membership. There was a total of (48) forty - eight members who received their 50 - year pins. This meeting is dedicated to those honored members.

Brother Bob Bayer explained that at the next District Meeting and Family Day, there will be contests held, such as horseshoe, quilting (complete quilt) pastry and volleyball tournament. The lodges are to notify Sister Maxine Pavliska if they will compete in any event.

Nominating Committee appointed included Tillie Valchar (chairman), Dominic Netek and Frank Veselka.

Second Vice President Brother Monta Foster introduced the guests; Brother and Sister Jerry Mikulas, Levina Meeker, Mr. Janota and Mr. and Mrs. Ross.

District Youth Counselor Sister Maxine Pavliska made the following report; attended Youth Leaders' Retreat at Lone Star Camp in La Grange, LIT -- April 16th, May 14th District Youth Leaders' Training Class at her home; at the Convention past Kings and Queens will be honored; there are 5 winners in District VII and they are from Robstown Lodge 117; H.E.B. Camp - Family District VII Outing -- July 3, 4, 5 and 6; July 24 -District VII YAD in Floresville; this year there will be a special category at State only, the subject is photography (Flowers) and District Camp -- July 31 - August 3rd.

The Audit Committee -- Sisters Simicek, Kurtz and Brother Matula found the youth club books in order.

Brother Ernest Jasek made the treasurer's report. (I don't have all the details.)

Motion made by Brother Bayer and seconded by Sister Hrncir that fall meeting expenses be paid from District VII General Fund. Motion passed.

Brother Eugene Hrncir, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes director, made the report that a meeting was held April 9th; rest homes are doing well; there is one vacancy at Needville; repairs were made at Rest Home No. II; rest home in Taylor needs repairs (roofs and trees to be trimmed at No I; both rest homes are always open to visitors.

Brother Bob Bayer read a proposal to be presented to the Convention By law Committee. The proposal is that Supreme Lodge obtain a Recreational Center -- camp to be used all year round; senior citizens could use it with cabins, RV hookups, seminars, workshops, tournaments, etc.

Lunch Break.

After lunch, door prize drawing took place. The lucky winners are Ernest Jasek -- cap, Anton Svoboda -pin set, Tillie Valchar SPJST dominoes, Agnes Pope -- jacket.

Brother Emil Matula, Publication Committee member, reported that he attended two meetings and that there weren't many complaints. There were suggestions that the Vestnik be printed on better grade of paper and the names listed in the obituary report to be printed in darker print.

Brother Dominic Netek, SPJST District VII By - law Committee member, reported that many resolutions are coming in; Supreme Lodge is represented by seven directors who are always alert; also is audited by

Insurance Committee every three years.

SL Financial Secretary Brother Jerry Mikulas presented District VII a check in the amount of $450; 1987 was an excellent year and 1988 will be better; assets were over 54 million; 41 million in liability; 13 million in surplus and 55,000 certificates are in force.

Sister Thelma Hrncir thanked Brother Mikulas for coming to District VII meeting. The Convention will be hosted by Supreme Lodge -- June 19, 20, 21 and 22. Scholarships are available to students.

Brother Matula reported that youth club books are in good order.

Brother Bob Bayer stated that he will be a candidate for election for District VII director at the Convention.

The meeting was called to order.

Deceased members were remembered in silent tribute.

Dorothy Chervenka read the minutes of our previous meeting; they were approved as read.

Correspondence was read and discussed.

Mary Zatopek gave her report; additional insurance was for Willie Capps and Michele Stetcher.

President Ladis Navratil reported on having the lodge air - conditioners repaired.

George Schiller attended to some repair work on lodge hall.

George Naivar was complimented on his care of the lodge grounds.

Frank Machalek was reported to be out of ICU in the hospital. We wish him well.

Millie Schiller was a guest.

Mary Ann Zatopek was the host for this meeting.

The next meeting will be Friday evening, October 14th at 7:30 p.m.

The District V meeting in Crosby was most gratifying; it seemed we all enjoyed visiting with each other and Lodge 65 really put out the "Welcome Rug" to all the 9 lodges who participated in some way or another.

Our faithful Choral Group under the direction of Tim Kostom and Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra with Director Vlastimil Kovanda enriched our day.

We had a wonderful attendance, and the reason was the change to a new PLACE, one who has never hosted a District V meeting to my knowledge. If you didn't attend, you really missed something; Crosby Lodge No. 65 (Magnolia) did a beautiful job, and thank you, District Director Jerry Prochazka, for inviting us. Second Vice President Louis Hanus introduced and welcomed our Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and wife from Temple and also Mrs. Marie Pajerova from Czechoslovakia. Mrs. Pajerova also

sang with the Choral Group.

District V President Tillie Helmcamp is writing in more detail about our District V meeting.

September 12, 1988 we had our monthly meeting at Lodge 88, with a good attendance, but not good enough. I do wish everyone who belongs to this fine Society would come to our monthly meetings because so many of you don't know what's going on, but you are a member and you need to know. THIS IS YOUR LODGE, so do get involved. We need your help.

First Vice President Marceil Malak read the minutes of our previous meeting. Our Secretary Carol Sager was unable to attend, also our Parliamentarian Ellen Miculka was absent due to a little health problem, but she's doing fine now and will be at our next meeting.

Those who received SPJST Scholarships are Dwayne A. Bohac, Vernon Hegwood and Michael A. Ognowski. Congratulations! Brother Souchek expressed how happy he is that we give these scholarships.

President Jerry Ermis announced our Czech Day on Sunday, October 30th. TAKE NOTICE! We will have a turkey dressing and ham dinner, of course, all the trimmings, and catered; so that gives the ladies and gentlemen a real treat; however, the Birthday Club will have a pastry booth -- we also asked for some pastry from all the lodge members to help with this booth.

Our hard - working Lillie Spies is "Ram - Rodding" this department; do help her if you can. All of us like to dance to Vrazels and then eat a piece of strudel, pie or cake with a cup of Annie's coffee. I understand sausage sandwiches will be served in the evening. The catered dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $4.50 a plate -- "No Mini Plates!"

NOW the charge for the dance is $2, unless you purchased a dinner ticket, then it's a free dance. Before the dance we have a Costume Parade, which is always so colorful and lifts your spirits.

Bennie Kocich reported for the Entertainment Committee, since Harley was just out of the hospital.

Harley, Bennie is doing a good job for you. Bennie stated that he had good and bad news that Harley is home, and sad news that Mrs. Faulkner, a member of the committee, died suddenly. Evelyn Antrich accepted the vacancy, and Milert Antrich will assist Bennie. We have some capable people in our lodge who are willing to take over when necessary. We will certainly miss Mrs. Faulkner. Al Pierson played on September 10 and Henry Kite was in charge of the dance, so he was the announcer. We were all amazed at how beautifully he opened the pleasurable "Evening of Dancing."

President of the Men's Club, Ed Miculka, announced they will have a drawing at Czech Day. They are giving away some money prizes and are selling tickets now. The Men's Club is a pillar to our lodge and we members should appreciate all the odd jobs they do, which are never noticed by most people. Give them a hand, and "buy some tickets."

Board Chairman Bobby Miksch gave the board report. He started out by saying he wasn't a kid any more but i married man. We are all happy for them and wish them well. The board has been very busy this month. We all realized that building the new building keeps the Building Committee very busy. Right, Tim? I was notified about the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs.

Louis Klare on September 18 at Lodge 88.

The children and grandchildren honored their parents and grandparents, Louis and Irene Klare, with a 50 - year anniversary celebration, and it happened to be the date they were married in La Grange, Texas on September 18, 1938.

Attending from the immediate family were Buddy and Marge Klare and sons, Kenneth and wife, Laura, and their son, Bryant, who flew in from the Navy to surprise his grandparents, also their son, Steven Tennyson. The Klares have 2 more sons, Howard and Kathie Klare and children Kelly and Kimberly and son, Dennis and Donna Klare and family, Bonnie and Steven.

They were joined for the occasion by a host of relatives and friends. The tables were beautifully decorated with red roses, and the piano music was furnished by Mrs. Steve (Estelle) Kelly and Mary Petrash. A very delicious meal was catered. Congratulations!

Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Vacationtime is over so now things should get back to normal living.

Many of our members made trips to different parts of the country and all seemed to have a good time. One couple had a car accident but were not hurt. We made a trip to Florida and, from Texas all the way to the coast, there were just a lot of tall pine trees.

The meeting was a little short of members due to the Hubenak Reunion that is held each year, so the meeting was not too long. All officers did give their reports and the trustees gave an account of the remodeling. It is really looking good and is just about complete. I am sure all will enjoy the new way the kitchen will look. Even the bar will be different, so if you want to see the improvements be sure to come to the 50th anniversary of the lodge building.

We want to invite all members and friends to come celebrate with us. Be sure to notice the adertisement in the Vestnik and what will be going on all day; as always, there will be plenty of food and drinks of all kind for you to enjoy.

Our Sister Martha Durham was not present due to the Hubenak Reunion so I didn't get any names of those members who were sick and so I hope everyone is well. Maybe the heat will be over because fall season is almost here.

We did have two members who passed away. It was with deep sorrow when we heard that Brother Dan Kubala passed away due to a heart attack. Brother Dan was one of our best Tarok players and did teach us how to play the game. He was still a young man, in his fifties. Brother Dan had several brothers and sisters and, if you knew the Kubala family, they are all very nice people. Sister Anna Becan was in a hospital at Wichita Falls, Texas for many years but, in her younger years, she was a good member and did support our lodge. She has two sisters who still belong to our lodge.

We extend our sympathy to the survivors of our deceased two members and to all members who have died, may they have eternal peace.

Lodge No. 130, Dallas The Texas Czech Beseda Dancers of Lodge No. 130 performed, again, this year at the annual Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio. As in past years, the festival was well attended.

We are very proud of one of our younger members, Miss Carla Pottkotter, daughter of Ray and Kathy Pottkotter and granddaughter of Arnold and Helen Vrla. She graduated this spring from Bishop Lynch High School and was honored as Valedictorian. Congratulations, Carla! Carla is now attending Texas A&M University at College Station where she is majoring in Aeronautical Engineering.

The next regular meeting will be held in October. Nominations for new officers for 1989 will be at the November meeting. We also plan a Christmas Party at the December meeting. I hope to see you there.

La Parita Meeting Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday, September 11, 1988 at the Gateway Restaurant in Pleasanton at 11:30 a.m., was a very good fellowship one with 13 members and 4 guests in attendance.

President Lloyd House asked all to stand and repeat the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. Edith Chessir was asked to give the table prayer.

Sister Tillie Koch, secretary and treasurer, was asked by the preside t to give the minutes of our last meeting.

The treasurer's report followed. Our president and members approved the minutes as read.

President Lloyd House gave a report from correspondence from the

Supreme Lodge regarding to the IRS; donations will not be tax deductible and stay tax free.

Secretary Tillie Koch read a letter from President Howard Leshikar of the Supreme Lodge congratulating her for the outstanding job she did at the convention. Everyone at the convention send their congratulations.

All members at the lodge gave her a big hand of applause.

Old Business -- pertaining to the recreation area; since. Tillie Koch was filling her assignment given to her at the convention, her husband, Cookie Koch gave her the information on the report of the recreation area; stating a committee was assigned to report in 6 months on the recreation with true figures to be given. He gave a great explanation at the meeting.

New Business -- Secretary Tillie Koch opened for suggestions on a Christmas party/meeting in December and at the same time election of officers will be held.

Recess from the meeting for luncheon of choice which everyone enjoyed with good fellowship took place.

Christmas party for December and meeting followed. December 4, 1988 was the date decided on which was to be held at the Civic Center in Jourdanton from 12 to 6 p.m.

Members of our immediate family were invited to attend; each member bring a covered dish; gag gift was suggested with a motion made by Mary Kahanke, seconded by Tillie Koch, for exchange by each member. Cookie Koch volunteered to make the barbecue.

New Business -- President Lloyd House made a motion for the lodge donation of the year, of $100 to Raymond Marek, motion passed and carried by all the members.

For reservations to the Christmas party -- each member call Tillie Koch at 569 - 5627 no later than November 28, 1988.

Edith Chessir made a motion for the meeting to adjourn; motion second by Helen Zezula.

President Harold Bergmann called the meeting to order on Thursday, September 8, 1988 at 8 p.m. at the Warrenton Grocery Guest Room. The Pledge of Allegiance followed Secretary Ricky Weyand read the minutes of our previous meeting.

Financial Secretary Arnold Peters gave his report. Treasurer Lee Leonhardt gave his report. All reports were accepted as read.

For old business, a field trip to Seaworldin San Antonio, Texas was discussed. Julie Weyand reported back with information about Seaworld, charter bus expenses, etc. It was decided to table this business with next meeting.

A letter regarding the tax ID for Lodge No. 179 was read. Everything is in order.

There was no other business and the meeting adjourned. Fried chicken with various side dishes were served.

Members also played games from 7 to 8 p.m. Everyone enjoyed the entertainment. We will have games at our next meeting, Thursday, October 13, 1988 starting at 7 p.m.

As I See it By: W.J. "Bill" Malina The District V Family Fun Day held in Crosby on Sunday, September 18, was an overwhelming success. It was truly an outstanding example of fraternalism in action. Everyone, who was there, had a good time. The food at the noon meal was absolutely delicious, thanks to all who brought covered dishes and/or desserts. istrict V President Tillie Heimcamp did an excellent job in arranging the afternoon activities. I'm sure that Tillie gave appropriate thanks to all who made the day a success. A special thanks must be given to the members of Lodge No. 65, who made such wonderful hosts and, of course, to the Crosby American Legion Post for allowing us to use their facility.

In these modern, fast - paced times it is good to take time out of our busy lives and relax in a friendly atmosphere. It is easy to underestimate the benefits of fraternalism, get caught up in the necessary functions that make our lodges work, and forget one of the most important reasons our SPJST was founded -- fraternalism.

Fraternalism is expressed in fellowship, charity and social contact.

Without fraternalism our SPJST would become nothing but a business minded, commercial insurance company. As a fraternal organization, we enjoy benefits and privileges that are not available to everyone who has an insurance or assurance program to sell. As individuals, we must see to it that it is kept that way. The easiest way to protect our privileges is to practice true fraternalism -- charity and fellowship.

Coast Czech nstival

Are you a "Polkaholic?" If you are, you won't want to miss the "Gulf Coast Championship Polka and Waltz Contest" at the second annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival. The contest will be held at 10 p.m. November 5, during the Saturday night dance. This event will be under the direction of the Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas.

Make your plans now to be in Pasadena, Texas at SPJST Lodge Rozkvet No. 172 on Saturday, November 5, and Sunday, November 6th. The dance contest is only a part of the entertainment you will enjoy at this festival. You will notice that this is a "FESTIVAL" and not a "fest," the co - sponsors do not want there to be anything short about the occasion. The festival is sponsored jointly by SPJST Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena, the San Jacinto Czech Club and the Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas.

Activities and entertainment for the 2 - day festival include a meeting of the Harris County Czech Heritage Society at 5 p.m. Saturday, featuring short talks by some of the members who visited Czechoslovakia this past summer. Following the Heritage Society meeting, entertainment will be provided by the Singing Czechs of El Campo at 7 p.m. and the East .ernard Czech Singers at 8 p.m. Music for the Saturday night dance will be provided by the enry Repka Band from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. including the polka and waltz contest at 10 p.m.

Wednesday, October 5, 1988-VESTNIK/7 Sunday, November 6, includes a full day of activities. Doors will open at 9 a.m. with kolache and coffee available. Everyone can take advantage of the morning hours to visit the several displays of family histories, early Texas - Czech memorabilia and a mini - museum from the SPJST Supreme Lodge. The exhibits will be open all day. Sunday's activities will officially start at 11 a.m. with the singing of the United States and Czech national anthems by Helen Hegwood. A roast beef and sausage dinner will be served starting at 11:15 a.m. at a cost of only $4 per plate. A brief address by a representative from the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C. will be given at 12 noon. The afternoon's entertainment includes performances by the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Vlastimil Kovanda and the Lodge 88 Choral Group, under the direction of Tim Kostom, starting at 12:30 p.m., a dance to the music of the Vanek Polka Band from Victoria from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. including the Parade of Czech Costumes at 3 p.m., the Czech Heritage Singers of Galveston County at 4:30 p.m. and, to close out the festival, another dance to the music of the Wence Shimek Band of Hallettsville from 5:15 to 9 p.m.

The public is cordially invited.

Everyone who has a Czech costume (kroj) is encouraged to wear it. Those who are not of Czech ancestry are welcome to wear their native costume, the committee will declare it an official Texas - Czech costume for the day.

Dear Members and Friends: Our September meeting was well attended. Dona Hubenak welcomed our visitor, Mary Pavey. It's always good to see Mary.

Secretary Clara Marchioni read the minutes from our last meeting and Treasurer Evelyn Spacek had a good report. Thank you cards were read from Mary Powers and Agnes Merlick.

Sunshine Chairman Lillie McMillen reported get well cards were sent to Ann Synek. She is now in a rest home and Evelyn Zacek in the hospital. We wish them both a speedy recovery.

We express our sincere sympathy to Mary Powers and Tillie Gillis and their families on the loss of their sister.

Hostesses for October are Julia Dueser, Aurora Maldino, Ida Mayer and Frances Simmank.

The door prize was won by Vicki Murphy.

I spent all morning at the hospital while Ed had surgery for skin cancer and it all turned out real good. Now, I hope my article reaches its destination in time.

SPJST Ornament Contest Guidelines All ornaments must be homemade -No store bought finished ornaments allowed. Ornaments must be youth club member's own creation. No pre assembled kits. Styrofoam balls are allowed.

Ornaments will be judged at the District fall meeting. The DYC will be in charge of securing judges and ribbons. There will be one winner in each age group category; 6 - 9, 10 - 12, 13 - 14 and 15 - 17.

Size of Ornament -- No larger than 3 inches in width, 3 inches in length, 3 inches in height

The four winning ornaments from each district will be sent to the Supreme Lodge via the DYC where they will be placed on an SPJST State Youth Club Christmas Tree in the Museum.

JUDGING CRITERIA Creative ability and skill -- 45 points Appearance and design -- 35 points Neatness -- 20 points MATERIALS -- May use any material appropriate for a Christmas ornament WHO MAY ENTER -- Each youth club member may enter (1) ornament,

Winners at the State level will be recognized with a certificate and have their ornament on the State Youth Christmas Tree. A picture of the Christmas tree will be on the front page of the Vestnik with the names of the winners.

SPJST VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT 1. Rules -- Standard High School Regulations.

2. Tournament advancement will be from local lodge, to district playoff, to state tournament.

3. Two teams will be eligible from each lodge to compete on the district level.

4. Top two teams from the district playoff will advance to the state tournament.

5. District Youth Counselors and/or Assistant DYC will be in charge of the district playoff. 6. Players must be sixteen by the date set for the local lodge' tournament.

7. Prizes -- Local Lodge: To be provided at local lodge discretion.

District Level: First Place Team $25 plus Lodge Trophy; Second Place Team - $15 plus Plaque State Level: First Place Team $50 plus Lodge Trophy; Second Place Team - $40 plus Plaque; Third Place Team - $30 plus Plaque.

1. Teams' regular playing roster shall not exceed 12 players including a playing manager.

2. The six players will include no less than 2 women.

3. Intentional direct spikes will not be allowed. (Intentional direct spikes will be called at the judgment of the referee) 4. When the ball is played more than once by a team, at least one of the contacts shall be made by a female player. Contact of the ball during blocking shall not constitute playing the ball. There is no requirement for a male player to contact the ball, regardless of the number of contacts by the team.

Letters From The Youth Fraternal Appreciation Dear SPJST Officers, Board of Directors and Members: I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation for having been chosen to receive the 1988 State Merit Scholarship. I am presently a senior at Snook High School and plan to graduate in May, then attend college.

My work with the SPJST youth program has been great - including some hard work and a lot of fun. I feel that I am a better individual for having participated in the activities of the youth club and have gained knowledge that will be useful to me throughout my entire life. I plan to continue working with the youth in their program and assist my lodge whenever possible.

I would like to, especially, thank Mr. Leshikar, Mrs. Reese, Mrs. Susan Skrabanek, Mrs. Betty Schoenemann, and Mrs. Ann Schoeneman. They have always been there when I needed help.

I will do my best to represent the SPJST because it is a "top" organization.

V Youth Club Meeting

Dear Vestnik Readers, Sunday, September 18, 1988 the lodges of District V got together for a day of fun - filled excitement known better as Family Day. At this exciting event, the youth of District V presented themselves very well.

First of all, the youth club had a booth showing many different activities. There were the 1985 - 86 and 1986 - 87 Scrapbooks from Lodge 88 (the 1987 - 88) Scrapbook was presently at the Texas Fraternal Congress.) Lodge 142 also brought their 1987 - 88 Scrapbook, plus there was a Poster showing activities in the past years made by the District V Youth Club officers; also on display were two banners -- the 1988 Camp Olympics banner which was created by Marlene and Darlene Migl of Lodge 88 and the SPJST Lodge 88 Youth Club banner (design of Marlene Migl).

Finally, for display, was a wreath that was one of our crafts at the 1986 Camp, the past 3 years Camp T shirts, and the three LITs (Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl and Crystal Wallace) who went to the LIT Retreat in 1987's T - shirts.

During the adult meeting, which began at 2 p.m., I was honorably presented to the members of District V. It is such an honor to say and hear that I am the District V Queen. My duchess, Jamie Meyer, was also introduced, but she was a little tongue - tied. King Keith Kieschnick and his Duke Nicholas Havemann were also introduced to the members of such a great organization. Keith and I were able to say a few words on how great we feel about being District V King and Queen.

Later, the president of the District V Youth Club was re - introduced by DYC Marie Stayton. President

Marlene Migl then introduced the rest of the officers.

The day was really great, and I would like to thank Lodge No 65, Crosby for making it such a great day.

Also, I would like to give thanks to District V President Tillie Helmcamp of Lodge No. 88 and Director Jerry Prochazka of Lodge No. 65 for planning such a wonderful day that was enjoyed by all who attended.

Finally, I would have to say thanks to Willie Wehring for the delicious meal.

Dear Members, Due to the illness of our secretary, Kelli Kopecky, I was chosen to write the minutes of our meeting.

The September 19th meeting of Lodge No. 84 Junior Youth Club was called to order by our President Meribeth Novak.

C.J. Novak, our treasurer, read the register and we had 24 members, no guests, 5 leaders and 7 adults present.

He also gave a report of members who did not pay their yearly dues of $1.

A special thanks went to Charlie and Wanda Petr, for they gave the Junior Youth Club a donation of $50. We know it will go to good use for our funds were getting low.

Our unfinished business was about having Beseda practices for the fair.

This year, we young juniors are learning the Beseda. Vicki Sims is working with this group. So we, older Junior Group, better watch out at the next District YAD for we now, just in our lodge, have some competition.

(Doesn't that sound GREAT?) Lynda Novak is polishing us in the older Junior Beseda circle, for the Fair, while Linda Coker is working with our pre - schoolers. They will per form the "Little Red Handkerchief" and "Sla Naninka do zeli" (Annie in the cabbage patch).

All of these leaders announced that Monday, September 26th, at 7 p.m. at the lodge, is our practice. October 5th and 13th will be the next scheduled practices for everyone, including the Moms and Dads who would like to dance at the Fair. We would like to have at least two circles of our parents dancing.

In new business, we discussed the Texas Fraternal Congress Convention in DeSoto, Texas at the Holiday Inn on October 22-23. Lodge No. 84, District III Scrapbook and Poster winners will be judged at this Convention.

The Halloween Party is going to be something different this year. The leaders want to have a scary time from 6 to 9 p.m. on October 27th at the

lodge. The witchy leaders would like to have some batty games and to serve witch - on - a - stick (corny dogs), spooky beans (baked beans), fried bats (potato chips) and witches brew (Mama Bessie's Halloween punch).

We were all asked to bring our families and friends for this scary fun time.

District III meeting on October 30th, in Ennis at Lodge No. 25, was also discussed. Volleyball will be played after the youth meeting.

Leader Jackie Kenney discussed our Christmas program with us. She was not finished writing out all parts, but will mail them to us. So as soon as you receive your part, start studying all of your lines. If everyone does their part, we just may have another exciting program to show. It seems like every year we get better!

Sunshine Committee -- Kelly Sims and Neal Andreason were confused on what months each member had to share, and found out that no birthday cards were sent in June - October.

However, in June we had a Birthday Party for those who had a birthday in June. So, we decided that the next meeting, we will have another "Special Birthday Party" for those whom we have missed.

Since there was no further business, Adam Faraizl made the motion to adjourn the meeting so we can practice Beseda for the Fair, and Chris Coker seconded the motion.

Our Youth Leader Bessie Petr wants us to check with the Vestnik on the rules about the Christmas Ornament to be judged at the District III meeting on October 30th, in Ennis, at Lodge No. 25.

Dear Vestnik Readers, I am writing to you about information on the District V Youth Club.

Sunday, September 18, 1988 the youth of District V participated in the district social meeting so called Family Day. During the day, Marlene Migl, the District V Youth Club president, was introduced by DYC Marie Stayton. Then, Marlene introduced the

Wednesday, October 5, 1988—VESTN1K/9 rest of the officers, namely, Vice President Crystal Wallace, Secretary Darlene Migl, Treasurer Karl Pflughaupt, Sergeant - at - Arms Michelle Linney, Reporter Paul Pflughaupt. The District V Youth Club officers are elected at the district spring meeting.

Marlene Migl then announced to all youth club members to go outside to the front lawn of the American Legion Hall in Crosby.

President Marlene Migl opened the meeting. Adults present were Assistant DYC Nancy Steubing, Youth Leader Barbara Linney, Assistant Youth Lodge 177 ember, Leader Lou Groendes, Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis, Cindy Havemann and Mr. Gloria. All officers were present from both Lodges No. 88 and No. 142.

Sergeant - at - Arms Michelle Linney made sure everyone registered. Then, Secretary Darlene Migl read us the minutes from our last meeting. The main contents of this were the election of officers at the spring meeting; also, at the spring meeting, we had discussed camp, YAD, and other upcoming District V events.

Next, we discussed new items of interest including the Astroworld trip which had to be rescheduled to Members of Lodge 177 take a break for a picture at Schliterbahn.

October 15, 1988 because of Hurricane Gilbert canceling the former date of September 17, 1988.

Also, there was talk of next year's camp. It was announced that we would be attending camp with District VII and that there would be several times throughout the year when the LITs, youth leaders, DYCs, and chaperones • would get together from both Districts V and VII to discuss the '1989 camp schedule and activities. I'm really looking forward, as others are, to 4 working with Sister Maxine Pavliska and her group.

The other big item of discussion was the "San Antonio Express Trip."

Details were announced on fund raising and events. Under fund raising, it was mentioned that there are Snack time for Lodge 177. several fund - raisers on the way, namely, a car wash, Lodge 88's bake ir 4i4 sales, a garage sale, a Halloween dance

by Jamin' Gene, and food sold in the kitchen at Lodge 88 during games on Thursday nights. Also, among the highlights of the trip, will be the Saturday at Seaworld. We are planning to spend a weekend in San Antonio where we would have to leave very early Friday afternoon to get there in good time.

The meeting was ended with the announcement that the next official District V Youth Club meeting will be in the spring 1989 during the adult meeting. The big item will be election of officers and the update on the big 444 summer events.

odge 177 Youth Club Meeting Dear Readers, The youth club meeting of Lodge No. 177, Academy was called to order at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, September 14 by our Vice President Eric Tomastik.

Our Youth Leader Sheryl Wiest reported on the carnival in Elgin that our youth will attend.

The secretary read the minutes and roll call; there were 11 members, 3 adults and 2 guests present.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:20 p.m. After our meeting, the members enjoyed having refreshments of cokes and candy bars.

Six Flags' Trip

Dear Readers, My group and I visited Six Flags on Sunday, September 11th. This was the first time I had been there. We traveled by car to Temple and then rode a bus from Temple to Six Flags. It was a very exciting day and all of us enjoyed it.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Texaska Orlice Lodge No. 13 Dime Box, Texas on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother RALPH STEWART DAVIS, SR. who died Friday morning, August 12, 1988 in Madisonville County Hospital.

He entered the hospital on August 9th and had been ill about 3 years.

Mr. Davis was 72 years of age and had he lived to August 18th, he and his wife would have been married 52 years.

Funeral services for Ralph S. Davis, Sr. of Madisonville were held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 14 at J.M. Day Funeral Home in Madisonville. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery in Madisonville .

A rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. at J.M. Day Funeral Home Chapel.

A native of Blessing, Texas, Brother Davis was a retired manager for the Weingarten grocery store chain in Houston. He also was a real estate broker for four years.

Mr. Davis married his wife, Ann, in 1936. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Madisonville, also a member of SPJST Lodge Texaska Orlice of Dime Box and a very nice member indeed.

Survivors include his wife, Ann of Madisonville; two sons, Ralph Stewart Davis, Jr. of Austin, Charles S. Davis of Sweeney; 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 2 step - grandchildren; plus a host of SPJST members and friends.

LYDIA KUBENA SPERLIK, age 89 years, who passed away Sunday, August 28, 1988 in El Campo.

Funeral services for Sister Lydia Kubena Sperlik, of East Bernard, were held Wednesday, August 31 at 10 a.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church of East Bernard. Interment followed at Holy Cross Cemetery, East Bernard. A rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, August 30 at Davis - Dawson Funeral Home in East Bernard.

Mrs. Sperlik was born November 7, 1898 in East Bernard. She was a bookkeeper and co - owner of the Kubena Gin in East Bernard for several years.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of East Bernard, SPJST Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, also Sokol East Bernard and Krouzek Snaha (a theatrical group), both no longer in existence.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sperlik, parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include two brothers, Henry Kubena of East Bernard and August Kubena of Rosenberg, plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were her nephews.

In lieu of flowers,donations may be given for Mass intentions.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Davis - Dawson Funeral Home of East Bernard.

Resolution Committee Frances Haverda Albert Lupik

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee, on behalf of our lodge officers and entire membership of Lodge 84, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our sister FRANCES BALEJA who passed away on August 31, 1988 at the age of 85.

Sister Baleja was born January 27, 1903 in Buckholts, Texas to John and Mary (Mikshan) Ruzicka. She was married to John Baleja on April 15, 1922 in Belton, Texas. Her husband preceded her in death on December 3, 1978.

Sister Baleja was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Bethel's 55 + Club, Priscilla - Dorcas Circle, Circle of Czech Women of Dallas, a past member of the Czech Choral Group SPJST No. 84, and a longtime member of Lodge Pokrok Dallas SPJST No. 84. She also was the reporter for Lodge 84 for many years.

Survivors include a son, Leonard J. Baleja and a daughter,' Helen R. Pokladnik, both of Dallas; 4 grandchildren, Diane M. Hayman, Gary R. Pokladnik, Alan H. Baleja and Joann M. Pokladnik; 2 great grandchildren, Katie D. Pokladnik and Andrew R. Pokladnik; daughter in - law, Mildred M. Baleja; son - in law, Robert J. (Sonny) Pokladnik; granddaughter - in - law, Tina M. Pokladnik; grandson - in - law, Scott Hayman; 3 sisters, Annie Vaenesian of Hurst, Mary Shenkir (her twin) of Cameron and Clara Krupka of Temple; 4 brothers, Jim Ruzicka of Temple, Frank Ruzicka of El Campo, Walter Ruzicka of Houston and George Ruzicka of Crowley.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, September 3, 1988, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Dallas with

interment in Grove Hill Cemetery.

A prayer service was held September 3rd at Kline Funeral Home Chapel in Tomball. Funeral Mass was held September 6th at St. Ann's Catholic Church of Tomball. Monsignor Edward Missenda officiated. Burial followed in Houston National Cemetery.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Mrs. Robert (Yvonne Coffey of Waller and Mrs. Randy (Mary) Bernstein of Tomball; 2 sons, Carl E. We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister ROSIE MARY MATCEK, who passed away September 10, 1988 at a Caldwell hospital.

Sister Matcek was born October 8, 1902 in Snook, Texas, the daughter of William and Rosie Sebesta Hejl.

Sister Matcek was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church. She was baptized and confirmed in the Snook Brethren Church. She attended schools in Snook and lived in Second Creek for a number of years. She loved to garden, sew, quilt, fish and enjoyed making kolache and baked goods.

She married Henry Louis Matcek February 17, 1926 in Caldwell. He preceded her in death September 15, 1982. She was also preceded in death by a son, Marvin Matcek on April 16, 1982.

Funeral services were held from the Caldwell Brethren Church on September 12, with Rev. Daniel Marek and Rev. Henry Beseda officiating.

Interment followed in New Tabor Cemetery.

Brother Pilcik was born August 3, 1914 at Bernard Prairie to John and Angelina Pilcik.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Dusek Pilcik, whom he married on September 30, 1940; also two brothers, John and Joe Pilcik; and one sister, Helen Boehm.

Brother Kubala was born in Granger and moved to Hurst from Irving in 1980. He was a maintenance person for General Motors for 30 years until he retired in 1983.

Mr. Luksa was born in the New Tabor community. He was the son of the late Tom and Anna Hejl Luksa, early settlers of Burleson County, Texas. He married the former Ella Reznicek on January 20, 1926. They lived and farmed in the Seaton community until his retirement in 1975.

He was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors are his wife, Ella Luksa of Zabcikville; a brother, Walter Luksa of San Antonio; two sisters, Millie Schiller and Matilda Sodek, both of Temple.

Services were at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Cyclone with the

He was a member of SPJST for 66 years joining Lodge Ladimir Klacel No. 129, Edge, in 1922 and later becoming a member of Lodge Dennice No. 94, Wheelock, when the two lodges merged.

Survivors include his wife, Della Kopetsky of Wheelock; one son, Eugene A. Kopetsky of Baytown; one daughter, June Reamer of Franklin; one brother, Adolph Kopetsky of Macey; one sister, Mary Nedbalek of Bryan and two granddaughters.

Weeks was solemnized with a Nuptial Mass on Saturday, September 10 at 2 p.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dallas. The bride's uncle, Rev. Harry E. Pechacek of Elk, Texas, performed the ceremony assisted by, Rev. Msgr.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene A. Gerlich of Waco, Texas, and the granddaughter of Mrs. Angela Pechacek of Elk. The bridegroom is the son of Mrs. Virgie Marguerite Morrison of Gonzales, Louisiana; and Mr. Aubrey P. Weeks of Houma, Louisiana.

Matron of Honor was the bride's sister, Donna Culliton of Arlington.

Maid of Honor was Jeannette Piatt of Dallas. Bridesmaids were Janet Pate and Barbara Fulbright Kahanek of Waco and Sherry Aycock of Dallas.

The bride's niece, Natalie Culliton, was flower girl.

Dallas. Nicholas Culliton, nephew of the bride, was honorary ringbearer.

Ushers were Tim Culliton of Arlington, Donald Steinke and Ronald Steinke of Elk. Altar boys were Jeffrey Pechacek and Leslie Pechacek of Elk. The bride wore a white floor length satin gown with a sweetheart neckline; handbeaded bodice, long tapered pouf sleeves, basque waist and scalloped hemline with cut•outs on the cathedral train. Her handbeaded tiara headpiece had a medium pouf at the crown and fingertip length veil with a lace border. She carried a cascade bouquet of white, pink and mauve colored roses and carnations. She also carried her Grandmother's rosary, her niece's bible and a handkerchief given to her by her Godmother. She wore a strand of pearls given to her by the groom on the one - year anniversary of their meeting.

A reception followed the ceremony at the Sokol Athletic Center.

Following a wedding trip to Saint Martin, the couple will reside in Garland.

The bride and her family are all members of Lodge 66, Waco.

Homemaker Honored

Dorothy "Jean" Lastovica of Kovar was presented the 1987 Bastrop County Outstanding Conservation Homemaker of the Year Award from the Soil and Water Conservation District at the Annual Banquet held May 19 in Bastrop. The presentation was made by August Hajdik, director.

She was selected from homemakers in Bastrop County for her accomplishments inside the home, from growing to canning vegetables, raking hay, feeding cattle, and caring for her family's need in keeping with the guidelines of the County's

Conservation District.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank C. Srubar of Plum, and daughter - in - law of Mr. and Mrs. P.H. Lastovica of Smithville.

Fourth State Tarok Tournament

and found its way to Austria (presently Czechoslovakia) where it became very popular. One could say that Tarok is the most Austrian of all card games, therefore, many Czechs played the game.

The cards of Tarok differ greatly in size and color from all other playing cards. There are 54 cards per deck and most of them show folkloristic scenes from all parts of the Austro Hungarian monarchy. The purpose of the game is not solely to win tricks but to get a certain amount of points. Each card, therefore, has a special value of from 1 - 5 points.

Cards such as "skyz, mond, pagat" and bids such as "prever" and "zeestoo" get the blood flowing in many people after they have played just one hand. But even the losers are winners in this game as you can declare "Una Beedah," meaning "You have no Taroks," and collect points from everyone.

The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society will hold their fourth Czech Heritage Festival Sunday, October 16, 1988, at the Bluebonnet Convention Center, 5602 John Stockbauer Drive in Victoria. The festival, initiated four years ago with the First State Tarok Tournament, Joe Janak, society chairman stated.

"To preserve our heritage" was the reason they chose to have a Tarok Tournament. Taroks were played by our forefathers, but up until the last decade they were only played by a few of the older folks and it seemed to be a dying game.

The game really originated in Italy where it was developed from a game called "Trappola," as far as we know, in the middle of the 15th century. It spread through France and Europe

The East Bernard Czech Singers were recently featured in an article complete with full color picture in the May 1988 issue of "Ceskoslovensky Svet, "Czechoslovakia's counterpart to "Life" Magazine. The article quoted the Singers thus: "We are an amateur group living in a small town, East Bernard, Texas, about 70 kilometers west of Houston, Texas.

We are all of Czech descent. Our parents and grandparents immigrated to Texas from Moravia 75 to 100 years ago and settled here in Texas and began farming here. We try to retain some of the customs that our ancestors brought with them and we also try to retain the use of the Czech language.

We love to sing the songs we learned to sing as children. Our performances are limited to the surrounding area and we have performed several times in the newly - constructed Riverside Hall in East Bernard, Texas."

The magazine featured only one other United States Czech singing group which was the Czechoslovak Moravian Club in Endicott, Pennsylvania.

The singers began their group in 1986 although they had been singing together for 25 years for weddings, funerals and Sunday Masses. They have performed at many functions in the surrounding area including the Houston Liederkranz, Victoria Czech Festivals, Kolache Festival in Caldwell, Schulenburg German Czech Fest, CzechFest in Rosenberg and various others. At present, the group has two Czech cassettes released, "Czech Christmas and Religious Favorites" featuring Czech Christmas carols (koledy) and "Classics from Czechoslovakia" featuring favorite polkas and waltzes.

They are in the process of recording a third tape "Czech Listening and Dancing Favorites" to be released in early December 1988. Forthcoming performances by the group including the Dime Box, Texas Homecoming on

October 1, 1988; Czech Heritage Festival and Tarok Tournament in Victoria, Texas on October 16, 1988; the Gulf Coast Czech Festival in Pasadena, Texas on November 5, 1988 and the Corpus Christi Czech Heritage Festival in March, 1989.

Members of the group are Birdie Hlavinka, Marge Hlavinka, Martha Janik, Yvonne Krenek, Georgie Losack, Margie Vacek and Martha Viktorin with John Dujka designing and performing the musical accompaniments.

Ft. Worth -17ou Wins -Ash Tournament We, William and Anna Lesikar, members of Fort Worth Lodge No. 92, are very proud of their grandson, Jason, who participated on August 15th in the third annual Junior Fishing Tournament held at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth.

He won a large trophy for the most fish caught (total of 6) in the 8 and under age group.

Jason is the son of Lynwood and Harriet Lesikar.

Cela zahrada byla pekne upravena a teprve ty sklaniky, kde byly ruzne druhy zeleniny a tet v gechno ve velkern a eiste, bylo videt, te elovek, kterY se o to stard, rozumi piaci a vi, co se ma eemu dat. Ono v gechno chce svoje, stromy, vino, zelenina, kvetiny a kdy2 nedostane to, co potfebuje, neroste, nekvete a nerodi a kdo chodi kolem toho, jenom zaleva a neni z toho tadna radost.

Tam v gechno vypadalo zdrave, zelene a jiste ma Zdenek radost z place kolem toho i se svoji tenou a deti take pomahaji, i kdy 2 maji u2 svoje zamestnani.

Na ceste jsme se zastavili u dvou mantelovYch sester a dobfe jsme se pobavili. Mely nejake vYroei ze g koly a byly tam ti piitelkyne. Byla to zajimava beseda a meli jsme se moc dobfe, po rozloueeni a pozdravu na shledanou jsme odjeli domft. Na shledanou jsme si fekly, proto2e dokud budu schopna a zdrava, tak se tam rada podivam.
