Our apology to Lodge No. 84, Dallas officers and members, especially Brother L. Cerny. In the last issue, September 14, on page 14, the same ad was used which had been printed in August 3rd issue with only the date (September 17) and band name (Eddie Ray's Polka Dots) changed. The (Admission: $5 Per Person Adults) was not changed from the August 3rd ad which read: Ladies $1 -- Gentlemen $5, and it should have been. In proofreading from the original submitted by Brother L. Cerny (which was $5 Per Person Adults), this was not caught and we regret the wrong price being printed and certainly appreciate the confusion this could have caused. We hope all who attended the dance understand the work of "Gremlins" in the printship and the fault lies with us. We have received a notice from the Texas A&M University that Brother Ernest A. Wentrcek will be retiring from The Texas Engineering Extension Service of A&M University, soon. He will be honored at a reception on the occasion of his retirement. For our SPJST, we extend our sincere congratulations. Brother Wentrcek serves on our SPJST Finance Committee in District I and is a member of Lodge No. 189, Bryan College Station. ***

These columns have mentioned before that the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) officers and directors had a meeting here in West, Saturday, September 3rd at 2 p.m. during Westfest, and, because your editor was busy at Westfest, he could not attend the meeting, regrettably. After this meeting, the officers and directors, namely, Brothers J.J. Skrivanek, Jr., Sid Pokladnik, Marvin J. Marek, Ben Trcalek, Jr., Sidney Kacir, etc. attended Westfest and were introduced at the Cultural Program.

Our SPJST Society has contributed $10,000 earlier and another $25,000 at the convention to the "Czech Chair Fund" and a total of nearly $40,000 was raised at the SPJST XXV Convention in June. This week, we received the following letter from CEFT President J.J. Skrivanek which gives the present status of our CEFT donations to date; let us not falter and slov, down now! Surely, we can reach our goal of $500,000! *** Czech Educational Foundation Of Texas (Ceski vzdelivaci nadace statu Texas) The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) is continuing its drive to endow a university chair of Czech studies, heritage and culture at either the University of Texas or Texas A&M University. Both universities are very interested in matching our fund of $500,0 I. To date we have raised almost $300,000. Contributions are coming in from all over the United

States, Canada and even Australia. A Californian has promised to donate his life insurance to CEFT. He is in his seventies.

Our biggest problem seems to be: We are not reaching enough people.

President Skrivanek pointed out that there simply is not a more important or urgent project in Texas or in the United States -- a project that should be pursued by all American Czechoslovaks. Have you made your donation yet? Donations are running from $5 to $25,000 to date. Please do not wait; make your contribution now!

Make your check out to CEFT - Czech Chair and mail it to our Treasurer Ben Trcalek, Jr., Route 3, Box 111A, Caldwell, Texas 77836. Be sure to print your name correctly. We are getting letters written in long hand with names unreadable. Be careful when filling out the form. Make sure that we know who the donor is; if it's in memory of someone, print or type the name. We would like to see thousands of names in the Permanent Record Book instead of several hundred. This book will be placed at the university where the endowment will be established.

Approximately 14 million of the country's amateur musicians are kids age 5 to 17, but half of those who take up an instrument quit during their first year. So before buying an instrument that may collect dust, it's wise to explore your child's ability -- and to rent before you buy. Most school music teachers can test your child's ability to distinguish rhythm and pitch.

The teacher or a school - oriented music dealer can then help you pick an instrument that will suit a child's physique -- teeth, height or arm length.

Most schools have low - cost rental arrangements with local music dealers, who usually offer flexible plans with small monthly service fees. In a typical plan, rental money goes toward a purchase price; you can return the instrument at any, time if it's in good condition, and if you buy within 90 days, you will pay no finance charge.

When you feel your child is committed to music -- look for sustained enthusiasm after at least three months -- experts recommend that you buy the best new or used instrument you can afford. It's hest to use dealers who belong to professional groups like the National Association of School Music Dealers or the National Association of Music Merchants, which generally have greater experience with school programs and offer service contracts on used instruments to ensure that they stay M good shape.

A Public Hearing on the Fraternal Agent Licensing Bill to hear comments from the public is set for tomorrow, September 7, 1988 at 9 a.m.

Report was made that the licensing matter was first called to our attention by the State Insurance Department during a liaison visit with representatives of fraternal benefit societies. Positions that are being taken by other fraternal benefits' societies were reviewed.

On motion by Director Prochazka seconded by Director Broz, and adopted unanimously, the following positions were agreed upon: That the Supreme Lodge opposes the licensing of agents of fraternal benefit societies as proposed in draft dated August 26, 1988; however, this Society is anxious to work with the department on arriving at acceptable legislation.

It was pointed out that the relationship with the State Board of Insurance has always been one of cooperation and mutual respect and it is hoped that this relationship will continue.

SPJST First Annual Volleyball Tournament The Supreme Lodge Board has approved the First Annual SPJST Volleyball Tournament for members 16 and over.

Each lodge is eligible to have two (2) teams represent their lodge at the district playoffs. The first and second place winners in the district will represent their district at the state finals.

Contact your local lodge officer about setting up a team for your lodge.

Teams must notify the District Youth

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Family Day Dear Members: Our lodge held its annual Family Day on Sunday, August 21, 1988 at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville with a good attendance. A delicious stew dinner with trimmings was served at noon. The blessing was given by Rev. Henry Beseda.

A short meeting was held with President Annie Vahalik presiding.

She led our members in the pledge to the flag and in a moment of silence for our departed members. President Vahalik then welcomed everyone present. She thanked the committees for the wonderful job they did in helping make the day a success and the ladies of our lodge who brought

delicious food served with the meal.

Also recognized and thanked were Mr. and Mrs. Henry T. Muenster for donating the beer.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy introduced our guests, SPJST District VI State Field Representative Jerome Hlavaty, District VI President Kathryn Wokaty; her son, David Wokaty and friend, Heather Ellis. Our over 50 - year members present were Joe Jansky, 94 years young and Ernest Meyer.

Special honored guest, Mrs Annie Morisak, 96 years young, was recognized. Mrs. Morisak was congratulated by the lodge and Jerome Hlavaty on having outlived her policy.

The lodge presented Mrs. Morisak with a carnation corsage. Members of her family present for the happy occasion were daughters, Emily Sitka, Louise Seitz, Albina Belinoski, Justine Quitta, Julia Battaglia and granddaughter, Delores Klovenski.

Mrs. Morisak is a resident of Stevens Convalescent Center in Hallettsville.

Introduction of our 50 - year members for 1988 and their families followed. Present were 50 - year members Bettie Prasek Kruse, Leo Strauss, Jr., Georgia Meyer, Margaret Haase, Robert Kubena and Daniel Kubena. Each received a ribbon made and presented by President Vahalik.

They had received their pins earlier in the mail. Unable to attend were Dorothy Pavlu, Adela Pohl, Julius Mikulenka, Annielee Drozd and Cecelie Maresh.

Jerome Hlavaty spoke to the members about the new policies now being offered to the members. He stated that Mary Matula, Annie Vahalik and Erwin Holy are sales representatives for our lodge.

District VI President Kathryn Wokaty invited the members to the District VI fall meeting to be hosted by Victoria Lodge No. 32 on October 30th at the Victoria Community Center. Many activities are being planned for that day including a kolache contest, horseshoe pitching contest, and quilt contest. District VI First Vice President Annie Vahalik had prepared three nice posters that were on display giving the rules for these contests.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky presented a $100 check to Lavaca County Crime Stoppers Representative Emery Gallia. Mr. Gallia spoke briefly on the work of the Lavaca County Crime Stoppers and the success it is having solving crimes.

Chris Chudej was congratulated by the lodge for being selected to receive an SPJST scholarship; his parents are Alton and Gaynelle Chudej. Chris was an active member of the youth club and his mother is serving as co - youth leader.

Our lodge will not meet in September due to the Vsetin Picnic on our regular meeting date. Our next meeting will be Sunday, October 9th at Mr. Gatti's beginning at 2 p.m.

Door prize winners were then announced by Vice President Gaye

Galetka. Winners were Gaynelle Chudej, Emil Galetka, Bennie Orsak, Elsie Mascheck, Viola Holy, Vicky Orsak, Alex Galetka, Lynette Hodges, Selma Grones, Milton Miculka, Mary Kutac and Mrs. Adolph Marek. Many thanks to Jerome Hlavaty and Mrs. Betty Kahanek for donating door prizes along with those given by the lodge.

Co - Youth Leader Gaynelle Chudej announced the winners of the Youth Club prizes. They were Annie Vahalik, Julia Battaglia, Jerome Hlavaty and Willie Mae Kahanek.

The rest of the afternoon was spent playing dominoes, enjoying the surprise walk and in conversation.

Refreshments were served. The day was a success and enjoyed by all.

Kim Janke, Mayor of Snook, presenting a Proclamation of the Oldest Citizen in Snook to Mrs. Fay Maresh on her 98th birthday.

Snook Honors Oldest Citizen Mrs. Fay Maresh was honored with a birthday celebration on her 98th birthday on July 20, 1988, at the Fellowship Hall of the Snook Brethren Church.

Mr. Kim Janke, Mayor of Snook, presented Mrs. Maresh with a Proclamation for the oldest citizen in the Snook community.

Fannie (Fay) Maresh was born July 20, 1890 in Snook, Texas to Mary (Skrabanek) and John M. Sebesta.

She was baptized by Brother Juren on May 24, 1891. Her Godparents were Theresa (Skrabanek) and Joe Sebesta.

She did not have a second name so when she started school, there were three Fannie Sebestas; they called them Fannie A., Fannie B., and Fannie C. so that's where she got her name Fannie C. She was confirmed in 1905 by Rev. Adolph Chlumsky. There were fifteen in this class and only two are still living, namely, Fannie C. and Mrs. Joe Jansc, age 96.

Fay and John Maresh, of Taylor, were married September 29, 1940 in Lyons at the home of her sister and brother - in - law, Mr. and Mrs. T.V. York by Rev. H.E. Beseda, Sr.

He preceded her in death in 1955.

She lived in the same place where she was born on the farm until she moved to the city of Snook in 1961.

Lodge 47, Seaton Meeting Held September 1st Dear Brothers and Sisters: President Jerry Pechal called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 1st. Lori Greger and Erin Skrabanek brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegaince.

Everyone was welcomed and visitors recognized were Ann Balusek, Danny Holt and Freddie Schroeder. Do make plans to be at the next meeting.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives and the minutes of the August 7th meeting were approved as read.

Correspondence consisted of the acknowledgement of a thank-you for the floral wreath for deceased Brother Frank V. Spanhel from his family, Supreme Lodge announcing the recipients of scholarships from our lodge and a letter from Brother Frank Klinkovsky for the other District II officers inviting all to the Fall Fun Carnival at Lodge 18, Elgin on Sunday, September 25th starting with registration at 1:30 p.m. Bring pantry items, dessert and salad. We'll play the carnival wheels, have cold beverages and supper later. Be there, we're expecting a . large crowd, so don't disappoint the officers.

We had only one new member, Mark Douglas Murray. Welcome to Lodge 47!

On the sick list we know of these hospitalized members, Brothers Adolph Junek and George Divis. Since the meeting, Sisters Anna Belle Chlapek and Gladys Marek had surgery; get well wishes sent to each of those named and also to others ailing.

Chairpersons' and officers' reports were all good. The lodge was presented the District II Volleyball Trophy won for Lodge 47 by Team Number One consisting of James Skrabanek, Rickie Novosad, Edwin Pechal, Daryl Kortis, Elsie Jez and Magdalen White.

Congratulations to the winners. We're proud of you!

The Family Night social will be held on Friday, September 23rd from 7 to 11 p.m. Serving of hamburgers and French fries from 7 to 9 and playing of dominoes, Taroky and other games to keep everyone entertained.

Brother Willie E. Kohutek gave some highlights on the legislation that might want to license sales representatives of our Society. He said that, hopefully, this can be prevented, because sales representatives are not considered full time salespersons.

In new business, the president and vice president appointed Brothers Louis Kohutek, Frank Klinkovsky and James Skrabanek to serve on the Salary Committee.

Wedding anniversaries will be observed by Calvin and Dolores Skrabanek, Albert (J.R.) and Dana Glaser, and Leo and Gertrude Kahlig.

Birthdays in September will be observed by Emil Hejl, Dana Glaser and Bertha Capps. Hope you all will have a "Special Day." Christmas Party coordinators will be Brother Willie E. and Sister Adeline Kohutek; they will need a lot of help.

You can see the year is coming to a close.

Dear Members: Lodge 81 members met at 12 noon on September 11 for a welcoming celebration of Lodge 170 members who had recently merged with our lodge.

For the noon meal, a turkey and dressing and ham with the trimmings were served, also pastries of all kinds and drinks.

Guests were District V Rest Homes Director Louis Hanus, District V Director Jerry Prochazka, District VI Director Matt Vanek of Victoria, Delores Prochazka and Francis Jones.

Bedrich and Billy Vanza. Even though the day turned out to be one of the hottest to date, everyone seemed to enjoy the good food and company.

On August 15, 1988, Lillie Spies, who is our Birthday Club treasurer, left for London to visit her daughter, Aggie, and son - in - law, Joe, who was transferred by Shell Oil to London.

She must have had a beautiful trip because she took a city tour of London and visited Buckingham Palace, Westminister Abby, Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, St. Paul's Cathedral, Tower of London; and Picadilly Circus. She also visited Harrod's twice, also Kew Gardens, rose garden and several conservatories, Kensington Palace and Gardens where Princess Di and Prince Charles live.

They also drove to Chester, Northern England on the border of Wales end stayed in a refurbished 1700's estates house called "Soughton Hall" in North Wales -- drove back to London stopping overnight in Ludlow staying in a hotel built in 1650 called "The Feathers." They visited the Castle at Ludlow, and had dinner in an old pub, where they played country and western music.

They also visited friends in Tunbridge Wells, Kent south of London with a lunch in a traditional

Lillie said the temperature was never above 60 degrees, and she saw only 5 policemen in the 3 weeks she was there.

She was amazed that the policemen don't carry guns. She's supposed to go back for Christmas, but decided it was too cold and would go later.

CZECH DAY at the SPJST Lodge 88 is Sunday, October 30, 1435 Beall, Houston, Texas. The food is being catered, consisting of turkey, dressing and ham, with all the trimmings, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at $4.50 a plate.

Entertainment will be throughout the day and, at 4 p.m., there will be the traditional Czech Costume Parade and from 5 to 9 p.m. a dance with Vrazels' Band. NOTICE: Dance will be free with the purchase of a meal ticket, otherwise $2 per person. We do hope you all come that day; there will never be a dull moment.

The Birthday Club will have a pastry booth and you know how delicious those pastries are. The club members and our fine ladies of the SPJST Society always provide plenty of the best.

Labor Day was a beautiful holiday.

It was cool, after such sweltering heat for 3 months. Many of our members chartered buses and went to Omaha, Nebraska to the Polka Festival and I understand it was a "Blast." I spent my holidays with my daughter Arlene, and son - in - law, Al, in Weimar. All their children and grandchildren were there, and what a fine weekend we had!

Jimmie and Julie Anders became the proud parents of an 8 lb. 10 oz. daughter, Crystal Nicole on Thursday, August 25th. When they came home from the hospital, who should meet them at the door, but her little 6 - year - old brother, Gabe Lucas. Notice this -- Ernest and Margie Anders are the happy grandparents. This is their second grandchild, and all live in Houston and are members (active) of our great SPJST Society.

This was a surprise when our Board Chairman Bobby Miksch got married on August 18th. I just supposed they didn't want a big wedding, which is their prerogative.

This fine young couple graduated from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Bobby is employed by Owen Healthcare Inc., and April is employed at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital. Their home is at 1541 Wakefield (Oak Forest), Houston. I know our membership will join me in wishing them a "Happy Marriage."

Ellen Miculka has been in the hospital for a few days, again. She's home now and the doctor said this time he's sure her problem has been corrected.

Harley Cox has been in the hospital for several weeks, but came home today (September 9, 1988).

Birdie Pech is at home now, and the doctor accused John, her husband, of pampering her too much. She's so lucky that she has someone to take care of her. Her therapist is very pleased with her progress.

Our Men's Club was saddened this past week when Frank Siller died so suddenly. He's being missed by most of us because he was a regular Bingo player, too. You have our sympathy, Mrs. Siller.

Our dances are really well attended and everybody is so happy when they leave. Our Entertainment Committee makes everyone feel so welcome.

Last Friday night, September 2, Nick Navarro played, with Earline Hoffman in charge and Rudy and Celeste Darilek assisted her, and

Saturday, September 3 Central Sounds played, with Gladys and Richard Smallwood in charge, also Eula Murray, Tom and Lydia Marsh assisted.

The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 133 was convened on August 21, 1988 at St. Margaret Mary Activity Center, 1314 Fair Avenue, San Antonio, Texas. Our president called the meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present.

President Trilicek informed the members that Cindy Campbell, daughter of Frankie Campbell was awarded an SPJST scholarship. It was then reported that Brother and Sister Anthony Trilicek were celebrating their wedding anniversary in August with Brother and Sister Emil Rohan.

Congratulations were extended to the members. The secretary then informed our members of the deaths of two members since our last meeting. The members were Phillip Browne and Helen Pendleton.

Brother Bill Mares informed the members that Brother Jaroslav Kleprlik was in the Northside Morningside Manor Nursing Home.

Mrs. Kleprlik was also residing in the manor in a residential section. The address was given as 602 Babcock, Room C - 15, Box 101, San Antonio, Texas 78284; phone number is (512) 731 - 1294. Brother Mares thanked all members for their visits, letters and prayers of the Kleprliks.

Our president announced that there would be an update to the Rules and Regulations of the lodge. The committee appointed included Sister Grace Rohan, chairman; and Sisters Viola Kurtz, and Viola Fajkus.

The members agreed to increase the social dues from $3 to $5.

The September 18 meeting of Lodge 133 was cancelled due to the fund raiser of the KJT and KJZT. Many members wished to attend the function. The next meeting will be October 16th.

Fifty-Year Celebration Of Lodge 92 Hall Set in Fort Worth A big Czechfest is slated in Fort Worth on Saturday, October 8th, celebrating the 50 - year anniversary of the National Hall, 3316 Roberts Cutoff, home of SPJST Lodge No. 92.

The celebration is slated to begin at 10 a.m. in the morning with planned activities for young and old. There will be a Czech Heritage display, country store, plus fun booths, carnival rides, etc.

Eight full hours of entertainment have been scheduled for the afternoon and evening.

The entertainment will commence in the afternoon with the No. I Polka Band of Texas, Jodie Mikula of Ennis, and will close out in the evening with the popular Harold Strand Orchestra of Waco.

There will be plenty of good cold beverages, a klobase and barbecue dinner available and, from the best bakers in the state, an ample supply of good tasty kolache.

Everyone is encouraged to wear their authentic Czech costumes; a contest will be held in the afternoon for the "best traditionally dressed" couple.

Everyone is invited and the members of Lodge 92 hope to see many of their good friends from other lodges at their big historical event.

Lodge No. 154, Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: Preceding our meeting 1 to 3 p.m., Sister Mary (Steinman) Hargiss and daughter, Appa Tiara, were honored at a lovely baby shower.

Brother Jerry Milan called our meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. He led us to the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our deceased Brother Paul Prehoditch.

Our guest, Jewel Clark, is getting to be a regular and we enjoy having her.

We missed Brother Frank and Sister Merel Kovar who left for Russia.

Secretary Mary Renfro's minutes were approved as read and Sister Mary Hale's treasury report was accepted.

Sister Renfro reported a new member, Leslie Poindexter. We welcome her.

Vice President Sister Rose Steinman gave the schedule for Czech Day at the State Fair on October 16th.

Sister Carolyn Cleveland, our youth leader, reported the Lodge 154 youth won first place in the swimming meet, frisbee and broad jump at camp; and congratulations to Chris Simek who won the all - around. She reported the youth club along with Sokol Fort Worth will have a Halloween Party on Monday, October 31st, 7 to 9 p.m.

The youth club still have the SPJST Cookbooks and with Christmas around the corner, they would make nice gifts.

Brothers Rome and Talon Milan have called their parents Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan from Singapore, Hong Kong, Bejing and Bangkok, China giving reports on all the sights and now they are in Seoul, Korea.

Brother C.L. and Sister Patti Gage just returned from a week in Louisville, Kentucky attending the Classic Car Show.

Sister Julie Hopkins returned Sunday from a wonderful week in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she celebrated her 21st birthday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Griffin.

Sister Billie Jo Mason will be spending a week in New York for the Dallas Fashion Awards for Jessica McClintosh. Jessica named one of her wedding gowns in honor of Billie Jo. We extend our congratulations to Sister Agnes Merlick who became a great - grandmother on September 3rd; her granddaughter, Monica Merlick, had a daughter, Deborah Leigh.

We extend our get well wishes to Sisters Evelyn Zacek, she is in All Saints Hospital; Eva Dockery in St. Joseph's Hospital; and to Brother Jack Hattendorf in All Saints Hospital. Get well, soon!

We extend anniversary congratulations to Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan, their 31st; Brother Joe and Sister Carrie Milan, 44th; and Brother Donald and Sister Bonnie Steinman, their 21st. We hope you all have many more.

We extend our sincere sympathy to the families of Henry Bordovsky on the loss of his wife, Mary; and to Sister Mary Powers, Tillie Gillis and Frances Ann Proctor on the loss of their sister and mother, Sister Annie Mae Becan of Lodge 92. May they rest in peace.

The "Golden Girls" were on the road again. Sister Mary Renfro was driving her great - granddaughter, Abbe Eaton, to Chicago, and Sister Jeanie Mason and myself went along.

They spent the night in the home of my niece, Sister Mary Kay Harrison, and gave Abbe a chance to get to know her

Wednesday, September 21, 1988—VESTNiK/7 cousins, Tina and David Harrison. I stayed in St. Louis to be with my family. Mary and Jeanie had some good Czech meals in Chicago and then they went on to South Bend, Indiana to spend a couple of days with their sister, Frances Mamula and family, and had a wonderful visit. On their return, they spent the night in St. Louis and we took off the next morning for home. It was an enjoyable six days.

Holland Lodge Supports Young People

for a lodge function. The member reserving the table will extend an invitation to guests they would like to have at their table. As in the past, the member is responsible for their guests and the guests' actions. This will insure that members will have top priority in seating and that an atmosphere of togetherness will continue to prevail at the lodge. During the past five years 17 members have donated a table and 8 chairs (cost of $100) to the lodge. If you are interested in donating a table and chairs, please contact John Anderson.

On Saturday, September 10, there was a Luau at the lodge. Terry and the Travelers provided the music.

Hawaiian shirts and skirts were the order of the day and members were encouraged to bring and share finger food. Bea Williamson and Helen Anderson were the hosting hulas.

Gloria Sizemore and Pat Bailey, we miss you! We all have a selfish reason for wishing you a speedy recovery because the place isn't the same without you.

There is a dress code at the lodge that prohibits tank tops and shorts at a lodge dance. Also no one is permitted to smoke, drink or wear a hat while on the dance floor. Your observance of these rules is sincerely appreciated and the lodge officers are most appreciative of your continued support.

East Texas Lodge No. 191, Lufkin The members who attended the business meeting held on the first Tuesday in August participated in making some important decisions that will have a very positive effect on the future of the lodge. District V Director Jerry Prochazka and his lovely wife were in attendance. His participation in the meeting was instructive and encouraging. The next meeting was scheduled for September 6th.

If you have something you would like to propose to the membership anytime, please call Lodge President Frank and Debris Juarez.

Ken Thornton and his building maintenance group, which you are welcome to join, will be doing some remodeling the next couple of Saturday mornings. If you feel the urge to drive a few nails, saw a board, or have a handful of advice come on out and join in. The lodge exists for the sole benefit of its members. The members operate it and no one receives any monetary remuneration for their time and effort. Your continued support will assure a place where Benevolence, Humanity and Brotherhood are the tenets, and members can gather for fun and fellowship.

Dear Members: The Choral Club met August 23rd with everyone bringing a covered dish and we really had a feast. We also had a special cake made for Henry Janacek, our accordionist, who celebrated a birthday August 9th. The cake was in the form of an accordion and said "Welcome Back and Happy Birthday, Henry." It was as good as attractive.

Those present were Henry and Helen Janacek, Leon and Vallie Zavodny, Martha Klusacek, Georgie Sodek, Anne Krcha, Albina Mikeska, Ruby Bolton, Mary Holick, Emily Stuteville, Dorothy Pechal and Lillian Mikulec, who we welcomed back after a long absence, and we hope she comes everytime from now on.

Our next practice will be Tuesday, September 27th at 7:30 p.m. at the hall. Next month we'll go to the Burmont Nursing Home on the fourth Tuesday, October 25th at 7 p.m. They always make us feel welcome, so let's all go there if at all possible.

Yes, we are over the top. It's a goal of one thousand pairs of used eye glasses that we at Lodge No. 88 have collected and donated to the Lighthouse eye center during the last two - year period.

Teamwork is what we call it at our lodge. The word has spread by word of mouth that the need exists here in Houston to help the needy and people who have never heard of SPJST before are responding generously.

Isn't it great to know that there are still people helping people?

Could this be true Benevolence Humanity - Brotherhood? Those three words on which our Society was founded -- they continue today even after almost a century.

Wouldn't the oldtimers of years past be proud to know that we of another generation are following in their footsteps?

I think that they would be.

Let us not rest on our laurels just because of having reached the one thousand pairs goal because the need still exists.

Do you think that maybe we might beat the past two - year period, the time it took to collect one thousand, by cutting the time down to eighteen months to collect the next thousand pairs?

Only time will tell.

American Czech Day

The

The American - Czech Culture Society will sponsor the 48th American - Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday, October 16, 1988.

The day will start with kolace and kava social at 8 a.m., then at 9 a.m. with a Catholic Mass (with Czech singing) at the Magnolia Lounge located at First and Grand streets (by the Lagoon).

The program will start at 11 a.m. at the Band Shell (also by the Lagoon) with the singing of the American and Czech national anthems, accompanied by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Cyril (Sid) Pokladnik. There will be a promenade of authentic Czech costumes, dancing of the Czech national dance "Ceska Beseda," children's programs, Czech singing, presentation of the American - Czech King and Queen and the longest married American - Czech couple, Czech refreshments, Czech souvenirs, accordian music and much more.

At the Marine Corp Square from 2 to 3 p.m., there will be Sokol exhibition featuring gymnasts from Dallas, Ennis, Fort Worth, Houston, and West; from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., there will be a Czech program on the Texaco Star Stage (at Big Tex).

THE CZECH CITAIR The Czech Educational Foundation Of Texas (Ceska vzdelivaci nadace statu Texas) The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) is continuing its drive to endow a university chair of Czech studies, heritage and culture at either the University of Texas or Texas A&M University. Both universities are very interested in matching our fund of $500,000. To date we have raised almost $300,000. Contributions are coming in from all over the United States, Canada and even Australia. A Californian has promised to donate his life insurance to CEFT. He is in his seventies.

Our biggest problem seems to be We are not reaching enough people.

President Skrivanek pointed out that there simply is not a more important or urgent project in Texas or in the United States -- a project that should be pursued by all American Czechoslovaks. S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II Corner Henry Chaloupka is the new resident to join the group at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in August and staff -- Angel White, laundry and housekeeping.

Welcome back from Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond is Frank Carnes. We regret the death of Frank Carnes. Frank will be missed by our staff and other residents.

Craft items donated by Gene Wirmbrenner, bananas donated by AA RP Chapter No. 1772, and donuts donated by Kroger Company No. 506 of Missouri City (Mr. Funk, manager), were greatly appreciated.

The Senior Citizen social held at the Immanuel United Church of Christ was attended and enjoyed by Gladys Hix, Helen Valcik and Hilda Clerk.

Harvey and Martha Marx returned from a vacation trip to Missouri.

Harvey and Martha visited Harvey's son and spent a day at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri and did a lot of sightseeing. They reported a wonderful time.

Every Monday morning, Elverna Graeber, Olie Eixman, Nona Eixrnan, Ella Eisman and Merylyn Leus come to have sing - a - long with the residents. They enjoy the singing.

Every Tuesday morning, Eula Ganske from New Gulf comes to have Bible study with the residents and visits with the in - room residents. In the afternoon, Frances Muzny, Lydia Hortmon, Margaret Jones, Ida Sliva, Donna Rice and Bobbie Bates come to play Bingo with the residents.

The Presbyterian ladies, Damon ladies and the Immanuel ladies came on Thursday afternoons to have crafts with the residents. Elton and Faye Tielke also come to have sing - a - long every Thursday afternoon. Everyone enjoys crafts and old - time songs.

Every Friday morning, Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar come to have rosary with the residents. In the afternoon, Lydia Hortmon, Melva Hastings and Freda Klawitter come to roll hair for the residents, who greatly appreciate this.

The KCs came to play Bingo Tuesday evenings, August 9 and 23 with the residents. They enjoyed Bingo and visiting with the ones present.

Thursday afternoon, August 11, Paul Legendre showed slides on Hawaii to the residents. They really enjoyed these slides.

Monday afternoon, August 22 residents, Gladys Hix, Helen Valcik, Hilda Clark, Linnie Shelton and Martha Marx (S.A.D.) went to Wharton to visit with Gladys Hix's daughter, Juanita Chudalla. Everyone enjoyed visiting and the coffee and kolache.

Thursday afternoon, August 25 Garland Hurtye and Mary Ann Goffinet with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy for the residents. In the evening, Larry Ognoski, Fred Gerke and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents. Everyone had a great time. Families and friends are invited to attend.

"Happy Birthday" for the month of July were residents Thelma Hiller, Rosie Zdunkewicz, Wanda Mae Bigham, Pearle Mae Herschap, Theresia Walger, Louis Smith and Augusta Engeling, and staff -- Vera Washington, Viola Kutez, Margaret Charanza, Nancy Burt and Pauline Baca.

The Birthday party was held Friday, August 26, which included Louis

Vacek entertaining with the accordian and piano and singing "Happy Birthday." The Unique Shop provided corsages and a boutonniere. The Friedens United Church of Christ from Beasley provided cakes. Lydia Hortmon brought brownies.

Volunteers -- Melvin Hastings, Lydia Hortmon and Bobbie Bates helped serve cake, ice cream, coffee and punch to all. We also were happy to see Ida Gasch who is recovering from surgery. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Thanks to all denominations of churches in the area that give services and communion and to the volunteers who did services in the home to these residents during the month of August.

We had 103 in attendance at camp this year. This included the chaperones and staff. We were very lucky to have 8 men chaperones, Richard Burney (35), Paul Neslony (66), David Tierce (66), Emil Petr (84), Ron Coker (84), David Vrla (84), Richard Andreason (84), and Bob Cleveland (154). We appreciate you guys sharing your vacation time with our youth.

We also had 8 lady chaperones, Liz Krajca (25), Louise Burney (35), Gladys Yates (66), Patti Neslony (66), Sharon Tierce (66), Lisa Reznik (84), Carolyn Cleveland (154), and Carol Sanders (154).

The Youth Club of Lodge 142 Houston held their monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 7, 1988 at 6:30 p.m. We had a very good attendance. With the summer over and everyone trying to settle back into routine, it was very nice to see such a good attendance.

Under old business we discussed that several of the youth competed at State YAD which was held August 21 in Temple. There were a lot of nice entries and competition. I would like to say that Jason Hermis won second place in the 10 - 12 age group in the Special Category of the Photography Contest. Also Keith Kieschnick placed first in Constructed Items of 15 - 17 category. I would like to congratulate Jason and Keith on their fine accomplishments. I would also like to thank John Buri and Amanda Hermis for their efforts at State; you all did a great job.

Under new business, we discussed our social of the month to go skating at the Trade Winds on Sunday, September 25th.

We will be having a cake sale at the adult meeting on Sunday, September 11th. Those bringing pastries are Kevin Hermis and Matt Mabry.

After our meeting we all went out to eat pizza.

Letters From The Youth Lodge 39 Youth Practiced Games Dear Readers, Lodge No. 39 Youth Club held their monthly meeting on Sunday, September 4th at our lodge home. We had three visitors. After the meeting, we practiced volleyball with our adult team. After a few games of volleyball, we had a sandwich supper. We also played more volleyball and then everyone went home tired so we could get some rest for work and school the next day.

L[Ice 24 Cyclone Youth Discuss Activities Dear Readers, The Lodge 24 Cyclone Youth Club held its monthly meeting on September 6, 1988. The meeting was called to order by Janet Macek. Presiding was Vice President Steve Bruggman.

Rodney Posvar led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. The roll was called by Secretary Melissa Holtman.

Fifteen members and one adult were present.

Guests introduced were Daryl Kortis, reigning State King and Michael Morris, former State King, both from Lodge 47, Seaton.

Congratulations to Daryl and best of luck to both of you.

We have two new members, Jennifer and Jeffrey Ashcraft. Welcome to Cyclone Youth Club and we hope you both will attend all of our youth functions.

Our Youth Leader Rose Harvell reported the fall meeting would be at Elgin on September 25 beginning at 1 p.m. We also will have a Halloween party with a hayride and wiener roast at Rose's home; the date will be decided later.

We will go Christmas caroling to the nursing home in December and we will discuss our Christmas program at the next meeting.

Lodge 40 Youth Club Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The Lodge 40 Youth Club held its monthly meeting on September 1st.

Darren Dybala called the meeting to order. The officers gave their reports.

There were 13 members including 4 new members and 8 adults present.

For old business reports were given on State YAD and the trip to the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.

Charity project included stamps for food and a clothing drive. The clothes are to be given to the Blessing Cup Storehouse for the poor.

We also made plans for our Christmas fund - raiser. Members drew pictures to illustrate the "Back to - School" theme. Since the meeting was held on our first day of school, first day experiences were shared.

Poems were read by Darren Dybala and Kim Kacal.

After the meeting we did crafts and folk dancing. Our next meeting will be held on October 6 at 7 p.m.

During the meeting, each committee chairperson gave a report. Fund raising Chairperson Tommie Wallace said that we have several fund - raisers in the months ahead of us. Kevin Faske, reporting in place of his brother, Wesley, announced that the refreshments will be served after our meeting.

Scrapbook Committee Chairperson Cindy Groendes said that Lodge 88 Youth Club's Scrapbook, which received first place in District V YAD, was being displayed at the Texas Membership Fraternal Congress.

Committee Chairperson Paul Pflughaupt said we had three new members, Lynette Caton, Julie Caton and Christine Porter.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney said that parents would be needed each Thursday night to work the kitchen during Bingo. The money made will go towards our "San Antonio Express Trip" to Sea World next summer.

YC Marie Stayton announced plans for Astroworld, Family Day and Sea World. On September 17, we were to be at the lodge at 9 a.m. in order to leave at 9:30 and be at Astroworld no later than 10 a.m. Family Day, for District V, was to be held in Crosby's American Legion Hall. Our trip to Sea World is set for some time next summer. The Ornament Contest was also discussed.

We also discussed the possibility of having a Halloween Fund - raiser Dance. The money we raise will be used for our Sea World Trip.

Before we adjourned our meeting, the youth members recited the SPJST Motto and sang the "SPJST Fraternity" song.

After the meeting, everyone enjoyed the delicious refreshments brought by Mr. Faske and members of the Refreshment Committee.

Brother Green was born in Bell County, Texas and was a World War II veteran. He married Ruth Neil in Austin on November 2, 1946. He and his wife owned and operated Green's Grocery and Bait at Neil Creek State Park on Lake Somerville from 1974 until 1984 during which time they became SPJST members.

Services were held at 3 p.m.

Saturday, June 4 in the Goodnight Funeral Chapel in Bartlett with the Reverend John Hooser officiating.

Burial was in Devilla Cemetery under the direction of Higginbothen Funeral Home of Rising Star.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Green of Rising Star; one son, Ronald Darran of Rising Star; one daughter, Sheila Lawson of San Antonio; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Neitach and Mrs. Nancy Daughtery of Bartlett; three grandchildren; thirteen nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Brother Tyler was a member of the American Legion and he was a Lutheran. He helped in the construction of the SPJST Lodge in Holland some 25 years ago.

She was a homemaker and had taught school in Lyons, San Antonio Prairie and Frenstat. She married Julius Ernest Knesek on May 21, 1934 in Dime Box and is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Milady Zelenovity.

Survivors include her husband, Julius E. Knesek, Sr. of 54 years of Lyons; two sons and daughters - in law, Julius E. Jr. and Georgia Knesek of El Campo, John and Marion Knesek of Denton; three sisters, Rose Leyva of Dime .x, Elizabeth Kubena of Dime Box, Jane Kornegay of

He was a member of the Church of Christ. He loved to fish and play softball and enjoyed watching T ball and enjoyed being around his friends.

He married Brenda Kay Brooks on April 14, 1987 at Protection, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Tarbet of Caldwell; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Tarbet of Shamrock; one daughter, Randa Tarbet of Caldwell; two sisters, Robin Clark of Pappa and Rhetta Tarbet of Shamrock; three brothers, Ricky Tarbet of Mooreland, Oklahoma; Reese Tarbet of Shamrock and Ritchie Tarbet of Canyon.
