SPJST First Annual Volleyball Tournament The Supreme Lodge Board has approved the First Annual SPJST Volleyball Tournament for members 16 and over.

Each lodge is eligible to have two (2) teams represent their lodge at the district playoffs. The first and second place winners in the district will represent their district at the state finals.

Contact your local lodge officer about setting up a team for your lodge.

Teams must notify the District Youth

Counselor of their entry in the tournament. The District Youth Counselor will be the coordinator for their respective district.

The State Tournament will be held November 5, 1988 in Temple.

There will be prizes given at the district and the state level.

From The Vice President's Office District V Sales Representative Receives Training

District V Family Day

Dear Members: The district officers, officers of Lodge Magnolia No. 65 and some members of the Lodge No. 88 Concert Orchestra met at the Prochazka Restaurant in Crosby. Following an excellent meal we made plans for our Family Day to be hosted by Lodge No. I 65 on the third Sunday in September at the American Legion Hall in Crosby.

The day starts with a covered dish dinner at 12:30 p.m.; the district will furnish the barbecue beef and each family is asked to bring a covered dish or pastry. Delores Prochazka will have charge of the pastry. Refreshments furnished by the district and Lodge No. 65 will be served before the dinner and later.

The Lodge No. 88 Choral Club under the direction of Tim Kostom and the Lodge No. 88 Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Vlastimil Kovanda will entertain us.

There will be 10 door prizes of $5 each donated by the district. Rita Alexander will have charge of this, so don't forget to register with her!

The meeting will convene at 2:00 p.m. and will not last long. We will elect the director of the Rest Home and the youth will be recognized.

After the meeting we will have a Social Hour with additional refreshments while you enjoy the good music of accordionist Jerry Hurta.

Lodge Tommie H. Lostak T.H. Lostak, Lodge 139 Danbury, received his new SPJST Rate Book and reviewed all plans of insurance with SFR Helen Hegwood recently. Lodge 139 has three other sales representatives who have previously received their books, those being Lonnie Lostak, Helen Fillipp, and Joe Frank Vrazel.

Tommie's training was delayed due to his wife receiving health treatments.

We are happy to conclude that Gladys is feeling much better.

Lodge 32 met on Wednesday, August 10, 1988 at Citizens National Bank. President John Motal opened the meeting with The Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence for our departed members. Roll call of officers, reading of the minutes and treasurer's report followed.

Johnny Richardson reported that the District VI Y W, which was held in Victoria, turned out to be a great success and thanked everyone who donated food and their time. It was much appreciated.

We enjoyed seeing Julie Kalinowski, "Miss Victoria" and a member of Lodge 32, participate in the "Miss

Texas USA" pageant televised from San Antonio. We are proud of her and hope she had a wonderful time.

Congratulations to Daryl Elles, son of Franklin and Lois Elles, and Lorri HuVar, daughter of Frank and Ruby HuVar. Daryl and Lorri are members of Lodge 32 and have won SPJST scholarships. The very best of luck to you both for a very bright future.

Kathryn Wokaty reported that October 30, 1988 will be "Family Day" at the fall meeting to be held in Victoria. A lot of fun things are being planned along with good food, so mark it on your calendars now and plan to attend.

We are all excited about District VI hosting the 1992 Convention in Victoria. If anyone from this district has any ideas they would like to see used for entertainment, decorating, etc., please let us know.

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 14 at Citizens National Bank at 7:30 p.m. We hope to see you then.

Dear Members: President George Pauling called our meeting to order at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 21st.

Leading the members in The Pledge of Allegiance was Dillion Locke, and Ashley Locke led reciting the Lodge Motto.

Everyone was asked to remain standing for a moment of silence for our deceased member, Sister Carollee Gerardin. May she rest in eternal peace.

All officers were present, except Youth Leader Gladys Yates.

Our visitors were Blanche Lewis and Leroy Edwards; we hope they come again.

Secretary Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of our previous meeting and, with a few corrections, they were approved. She read a letter concerning the new IRS requirements and benefits law from the Supreme Lodge. She also read a thank you note from Brother Arthur Langlotz.

Sister Darlene Engelke read a thank you note from the Sister Angeline West family.

Brother Jim Locke asked that Brother Frank Parma be thanked for the frame he made to frame the convention picture and for the wood slots for the numbers t go above the tables.

The board minutes were read by Sister Mary Alice Langlotz and were approved.

The Entertainment Committee's report was given by Sister Polly Gaidusek for September 18th meeting; we will serve fried chicken, potatoes and black - eyed peas; members are

The Fraternal Committee report was given by Sister Jeanette Smith who asked if members would bring canned goods to our next meeting.

Sister Gloria Locke sent a get well card to Aline Wright; sympathy cards were sent to Alma Silvers, Daniel Nors and Otis Ceska; baby congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pruitt.

Sister Libbie Parma gave a report on the Trust Fund. She received donations in memory of Edith Wear from Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Mueller, also for Carollee Gerardin from SPJST Lodge 66. She stated the merits will be awarded to the youth members at our September meeting. Kyle Stuckly thanked Sister Libbie Parma for the donations they received for their trip to Czechoslovakia. He presented her with a gift -- pretty dolls "panenky" from 'Czechoslovakia.

Sister Parma thanked him.

Resolution of Sympathy was read for our departed member, Sister Carollee Gerardin.

New members accepted were Michelle N. Cook, Cody M. Cook, Kristie L. Heussner and Nicholas R. Cullition. Welcome to our new members; come out and join us.

Brother George Pauling briefed on the volleyball tournament which our Youth Leader Gladys Yates will be in charge of.

Brother George Pauling reported on the State SPJST Tarok Trophy challenge between Lodge No. 92 and Lodge No. 66. Prizes were won by: 1st - Emil Hanus, 2nd - Dorothy Warren, 3rd - Arthur Marak, Low Point Lawrence Hessel. We get to keep the trophy for a little longer.

The door prize winner was Sister Polly Gaidusek. Members celebrating birthdays in August were Gloria Locke, Tommy Forbes and Johnnie Gaidusek. The birthday cake was brought by Ashley Locke.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Minutes of the July meeting were read by Secretary Latham; there were no corrections or additions and they were approved as read by our secretary.

In correspondence, thank you cards were read from the Fronek and Bertrand families for the flowers sent

by Lodge 80 for the funerals.

The youngsters of the Little League Baseball of the community were entertained with a delicious dinner at our hall on July 30, with a lot of nice trophies given away. Our lodge sponsored the girls' team.

American Legion No. 526 of Holland will replace some of the tables at our hall. A round of applause was given to them for this good gesture.

At this meeting, the members discussed some work to be done on the yard at the hall.

On the sick list, Daniel Grossman had major surgery at Scott and White; he is at home. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Well, the weather has been very hot in these parts just like everywhere else.

The grain crops turned out real good despite the hot, dry weather. The cotton crop will turn out fairly good.

If it would have gotten a rain 2 or 3 weeks ago, it would have been a bumper.

Our 25th anniversary of building our hall, which will be in October this year, was discussed at the meeting. We will discuss this further at our September meeting.

Door prize winners were Jo Ann Benner, Ligie Ivicic, Darwin Ivicic and President D.I. Bohac.

Brother Rhode and Dan Grossman had birthdays in July, so a prize was also given them.

Due to the Labor Day holiday, we have postponed our regular meeting to the second Sunday, September 11th.

Dear Members: The next meeting of Lodge No. 79 is scheduled for Wednesday, September 14 at 7 p.m. at the hall on 5502 Kostoryz Road. We need the input of all the members, not iust a few, for such as to work out the details for the District VII fall meeting and social which we are hosting October 30 and any other matters that come up. If you don't attend meetings, how will you know what the lodge does?

The August meeting had a very disappointing small attendance. The covered dish supper was super and thoroughly enjoyed by the few faithful members who came.

Lodge Pokrok ]allas No. 84 Annual Czech Fest Dear Members and Friends: Can you believe how fast time flies?

It's nearly time for our annual Czech Fest again. It is set for September 11, 1988. We want to invite all of you, so start making plans. It will be a fun and fraternal day. Doors will open about 11:30 a.m. and dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. A free dance will start at 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Polka Patriots will furnish enjoyable music.

We hope all our members will help us in many ways. We are asking for donations toward the country store (canned goods), gift shop (home canned goods, handmade items), plants, cakes, pastry and desserts for the dinner. ST— Lodge No. 87, Temple Dear Readers, SPJST Lodge 87 held their regular meeting Friday evening, August 12th at 7:30 p.m. with President Ladis Navratil presiding.

The meeting was called to order, Flag Bearer Ed Reisner led the lodge members in reciting The Pledge of Allegiance.

Silent tribute was paid to deceased members Corrine Hays and Robert Moore. May they rest in eternal peace.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved as read.

Officers' reports were given and old and new business was discussed.

Anna Joyce Mundell is a new member in our lodge from Lodge 187, Round Rock, Texas. We extend a warm welcome to Anna Mundell.

Ed and Florence Reisner hosted the social hour; watermelon was served to members and guests.

George Schiller was reported to be on the sick list.

The next meeting will be held Friday evening, September 9th at 7:30 p.m.

Lodge No. 88, Houston News Don't forget Sunday, September 18, 1988, when District V will have a Family Day and meeting at Lodge No. 65 in Crosby. President Tillie Helmcamp arranged an officers' meeting and dinner on August 16 at Port Royale Restaurant in Crosby, whose owner is Willie Prochazka, brother to Jerry Prochazka. Before we planned the day for September 18, we had a most delicious seafood meal.

Our plans are as follows: There will be a family dinner with beef brisket being furnished and all members are to bring a vegetable dish or dessert, being served beginning at 12:30 p.m., with refreshments served beginning at 12:00. Lodge 88 Orchestra and the Choral Group will entertain until 2 p.m, when the meeting will convene.

DYC Marie Stayton stated that she would introduce our king and queen, also the youth will have a part in the program.

The Rest Home director will be elected, and after the business session, Weinert Grohman will play his accordian, while the members visit.

You may not know that these Family Days are so very important, and we officers do hope someone will represent each lodge in our District V. We are counting on you.

Our dances have been well attended. Check page 15 of the Vestnik or your schedule card because we have some great bands coming up.

I am so sorry to report that Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox is in the hospital presently. He had surgery, but is doing well so far, and hope he'll be back home and at the lodge soon. Harley is being missed when he's not around because he enjoys his job and puts in a lot of his time.

A group of us attended one of those dances Saturday night, August 27 with

the ever - great band, "The Knights of Dixie." We usually do a lot of visiting, but not that night; we all just had to dance all the time. Leland and Dorothy Hensley were in charge of the dance with Milert and Evelyn Antrich assisting. It was a big job due to a large crowd, but they did a fine job. I hope everyone had as good a time as we did.

I must mention this! One of our young talented members Kay Bily Knight, who owns several dance studios, presented a beautiful program on Sunday, August 21, when the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association gave a barbecue for the members, and a dance by Henry Repka at Lodge 88. Kay had a number of beautiful girls, who put on a show of tap - dancing and really got everybody's attention. Kay's husband, Dalton, assisted her. Kay's little nephew, Wesley Bily, 2 - year - old son of Gerald and Rachel and Lad and Tilly's grandson, got on the floor later and danced the "Chicken Dance" to Repka's music, which was most amusing, also. Little children usually steal the show -- they are unpredictable. I recall when my little daughter refused to be in a wedding, but after all kinds of threats she finally did it, but not like she was supposed to. She was to scatter rose petals down the aisle, but she entered the church and turned her little basket of petals overall in one place.

Rosalee and Tim Kostom returned home from a month long European trip and had a most enjoyable time.

They both looked healthy and rested when they came home. Tim had gained a few pounds, but I don't blame him.

All those "knedliky and sladky zeli" taste too good to turn down. Our friend Frances Olexa can cook that, too. Tim and Rosalee visited with Rosalee's cousin, Vlasta Mikolasik, of Bystrice in Benesova in Czechoslovakia. They also took a trip to Breclav to visit Ladislova and Hanno Bravencovi, who are performers of the "Podluzan" group.

This group was in Houston November, 1986. They also spent several days in Bratislava and Hodonin and enjoyed the baths at Marianske Lazne (Spas) with a lot of cultural and social life.

They were sorry to hear Mrs. Slavaka Kupka of Prague, Czechoslovakia died on July 27, 1988. She and her husband, Jan Kupka, were guests of Rosalee and Tim in 1981.

Marie Kostomlatsky's mother, Marie Pajeroia from Trebova, Czechoslovakia, is visiting with Marie for 4 months. We had a little party in the Blue Room the other night. She is such a fine and special person.

My little great - grandson, Adam Marshall, spent 3 days with me and what a treat! That was part of my vacation because I didn't do anything but play with him.

Lodge No. 142, Houston On Sunday, August 11, 1988 President Dennis Hermis called our regular monthly meeting to order at 2 p.m. We had 37 members and 4 guests who stood to recite The Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers; all were present and then read the minutes from the previous meeting which stood approved as read.

All officers' reports were given and bar and board reports were read by Sister Rosie Schilhab.

Our Sick Committee reported our Brother Darwin razda in a nursing home and Calvin Laxter and Frank Meiner are on the sick list. e hope all are feeling better by this time.

New members are Catherine Adams, Christina Lynn Adams, Heather Ann Woodard and Christopher Kubeczka signed by Sales Representative Sidon Tumis with 4 new members and 12 for additional insurance. Brother Henry Hermis made a motion to accept the new members, seconded by Brother Henry Linhart.

President Dennis Hermis recognized our visitors District V Director Jerry Prochazka, and his wife, Dolores, Joe Gambil, Jo Buri and Paul, a friend of Jason Hermis. We were happy to have these visitors at our meeting.

District V meeting and Family Day will be held at the American Legion Hall in Crosby on September 18th.

Each family is asked to bring a covered dish and the district will furnish the meat and drinks; hope to see you there.

Birthdays for August were Libby Kovar (August 7), Ruth Kieschnick

(August 1), Gus Florian (August 23), Jerry Prochazka (August 19), Frank Tumis (August 16), and Herman Ognoski (August 27).

Our capsule attendance prize of $80 went unclaimed due to the absence of Curtis H. Walters. Next month's prize will go to $90. Come to the meeting because you may be the lucky one!

No youngest member under 16 years was present, therefore, the $5 prize went to the oldest member present who had not already won. Congratulations to Brother Henry Linhart.

Four door prizes went to Gus Molenosky, Dorothy Tumis, Maggie Cernuch and Rosie Schilhab.

The meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m.

A delicious meal of sausage, sauerkraut and all the trimmings was served by our gracious kitchen manager; thanks to Sister Rosie Tumis. The next meeting will be Sunday, September 11th, at 2 p.m.

Lodge 142 members Nelson and Alice Jochen of Houston and Schulenburg, and Elizabeth Krischke and Buck Crosby of Schulenburg have returned from a week's vacation trip to St. Kitts Island and Nevis Island in the Caribbean.

For the second year, they visited these islands and stayed at the Jack Tar Village All - Inclusive Vacation Resort.

They had a most enjoyable, relaxing vacation. After flying to Dallas and spending the night, they departed from the Dallas airport on a chartered Braniff Airlines plane to land at Freeport in the Bahamas for refueling. They then continued to St. Kitts, formerly known as St. Christopher Island, where Christopher Columbus first landed when he discovered America. They did much sightseeing, took a catamaran cruise one day and took another ship to tour the sister island of St. Kitts, which is Nevis. The islands are fabulous and all enjoyed a taste of the Old English as they toured the British Island where Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles had also visited in 1963 and 1978. The Jack Tar Village was most gracious and honored the guests who had returned for a second time with a special party on Wednesday night and gave the guests special gifts. The tourists met and made friends with people from ngland, Canada, New York, Arkansas, Oklahoma and other parts of the world.

On these islands the weather stays a constant temperature of about 80 degrees and the cool Atlantic breeze is most delightful, with almost daily showers. Flowers are blooming everywhere and the fruit bought there grows in abundance on trees on the countryside.

After a full week of much fun, all are glad to be back home in this great U.S.A., even after being in the "land of paradise," and are thankful for a safe trip.

Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Are you enjoying this cooler weather? Just wish we got more moisture.

I failed to mention Brother Frank Kovar was our door prize winner at our meeting. At the Culture Society meeting last night, I learned he and Sister Merel will be leaving with a touring group to Russia. I'm sure they will have a lot to tell us.

Four brothers and their sons, Jerry Milan and Rome and Talon, Frankie Milan and Joey and Paul, Emil Milan and David and Joe Milan enjoyed a wonderful deep sea fishing trip at Corpus Christi and came home with 300 pounds of fish (they are all our lodge members).

On Brother Emil Milan's return home, he and Sister Sally flew to San Francisco and took in all the beautiful sights, rented a car and went to Vancouver, Canada and visited his grandparents, Tony and Rosie Obal's (now deceased), children and reported a wonderful visit and they showed them all the beautiful sights. Sally is a big flower lover.

Brother Frankie and Sister Martha left for South Bend, Indiana where their son, Josh, was visiting for 3 weeks with his aunt, Sister Frances Mamula and family and then on to Peoria, Illinois for the National Soft Ball Tournament where Josh was a bat boy. They also got to visit with their cousin Sister Mary Katherine Garrison. She is the daughter of Sister Mary Hale. On their return home, they stopped in Arkansas to visit their son, Brother Ricky.

Sister Mary Grubis had a wonderful trip to Bangkok, Singapore, Malasia and Hong Kong. She was home a week and went to Las Vegas. No luck!

Bruce and Sister Vera Richards -of Seattle, Washington enjoyed a wonderful 5 - week visit with Vera's parents, Frank and Verka Matustikovi from Kunovice, Uherske Hradiste, Czechoslovakia. The grandparents enjoyed their 2 - year - old grandson, Paul. She said he speaks half Czech and half English. Glad everyone arrived home safely.

We were sorry to hear about Brother Mac and Sister Lillie McMillen of Lodge 92 about their car being totaled on their way to the Polka Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska, but we were all thankful they weren't hurt.

It looks like the girls have it. Sister Mary (Steinman) and Larry Hargiss are the proud parents of their first, a daughter, Appa Tiara, on August 24th. The proud grandparents are Sister Rose Steinman, Dorothy Allen and George and Mildred Hargiss.

Sister Pam and Roy Franks are happy on the arrival of their daughter, Taylor Nicole on August 13th. Her proud grandparents are Brother Marvin and Sister artha Janca and Joy Franks and great - grandmother Sister Millie Kubala; Mike and Sister Leanne Marshall also have arrival of their first a daughter, Ashley Breanne on August 29th. Her proud grandparents are Brother Jim and Sister Wanda Mason and Barbara Price and Dennis Marshall, great - grandparents Rufus and Eva Thrasher and Sister Jeanie Mason. Congratulations to you all!

We extend our sincere sympathy to Sister Ann Sustala and family on the loss of her brother Henry Snapka of Ennis. He was loved by many and to the family of Brother Frank Stransky of Dallas. May they rest in peace.

Ladies' Circle, Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: Here we are into September and already we have relief from the hot August weather. The little cool spell sure is wonderful. They say we will have more hot weather and it's still dry; the little showers we've had hadn't been much help.

Our August meeting was attended by 51 ladies, 8 men and 4 guests.

President Dona Hubenak welcomed one new member, Aurora Maldino, who is a former member; we sure are glad to have you back, Aurora.

Secretary Clara Marchioni read the minutes from our last meeting and Treasurer Evelyn Spacek gave her report. A thank you card from Flora Koci was read.

Sunshine Committee Chairwoman Lillie McMillen reported sending a get well card to Agnes Merlick.

Since the meeting, Mary Powers has been in the hospital and on their way to Lincoln, Nebraska, Lillie and Mac McMillen were in a car wreck; their car was totaled but they had no serious injuries, except bruised up and were real sore for some time.

When someone is on the sick list or going to the hospital, please call Lillie McMillen; she has no way of knowing otherwise.

Betty Billington, chairman of the Ladies Circle Committee for the October 8th celebration booth at Lodge 92, reported that members of the Ladies' Circle are asked to bring crafts, plants and whatever you might have you would like to bring as long as it's in good condition; you may bring clothing but it's not encouraged. The ladies are asked to price their own items if possible.

Marie Tesar spoke on the interesting events that took place in the past. She told when she met her husband, Frank, and some of the events that took place until they married. It was very interesting. Julia Dueser reported on their trip to Flagstaff, Arizona where they met their son, Raymond Dueser and his wife, and Josephine Prochaska told of a fun trip to New Braunfels.

Mary Ann Gibson told of her trip to London.

September Vestnik Project The Constitution sets down the laws of our land. It tells us how the laws are to be passed and who can pass them.

- The Constitution says we can't give anyone a royal title. We can't make anyone a king. Our people elect a president.

- The Constitution says that the U.S. Government can collect taxes based on how much money people make.

- The Constitution says the government can set up post offices so that mail can be delivered to places far and near.

- The Constitution says that only the U.S. Government can make our money.

Our Constitution was written a very long time ago. George Washington was the president of the meeting that wrote the Constitution. Ben Franklin was also at this meeting.

We have a Constitution because we needed rules to tell us how our government was to work.

Our country began with 13 colonies that were owned by England. These 13 colonies were not happy being ruled by England and King George III. In 1776 the colonies signed the Declaration of Independence saying they wanted to be free to govern themselves. They set up their own government so they could do just that.

The 13 colonies became the 13 states. They called the first laws of the land the Articles of Confederation.

England fought to hold on to her colonies after they rebelled. She sent troops to this country. The fight for independence lasted for six long years.

It ended with the Treaty of Paris signed in 1783.

At last, the 13 states were free. But the government they had set up to help run the country was not working. The laws in the Articles of Confederation were too weak. Something had to be done. The states were quarreling among themselves. In some ways, they acted like separate countries.

The states of Maryland and Virginia were the first to meet and settle some of their problems. At a meeting held at Mount Vernon in 1785, they also agreed that all 13 states should hold another meeting to work out other problems. The meeting was held in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1786. Only five of the states sent delegates to it. ut these delegates decided that a meeting to rewrite the weak laws was needed. They called for a meeting to be held in Philadelphia the next year.

Our Constitution tells how our government works. It was written at a meeting that began May 25, 1787, and lasted for four months. The meeting was held in Independence Hall, the same building where the Declaration of Independence had been signed in 1776.

Fifty - five delegates from 12 states attended. This meeting has been called the greatest meeting of wise men in history.

The delegates wrote a whole new Constitution instead of making just e few changes in the old one.

Nine states had to ratify or approve it. It became the law of the land in 1789,

SPJST Ornament Contest Guidelines All ornaments must be homemade -No store bought finished ornaments allowed. Ornaments must be youth club member's own creation. No pre assembled kits. Styrofoam balls are allowed.

Ornaments will be judged at the District fall meeting. The DYC will be in charge of securing judges and ribbons. There will be one winner in each age group category; 6 - 9, 10 - 12, 13 - 14 and 15 - 17.

Size of Ornament -- No larger than 3 inches in width, 3 inches in length, 3 inches in height

The four winning ornaments from each district will be sent to the Supreme Lodge via the DYC where they will be placed on an SPJST State Youth Club Christmas Tree in the Museum.

JUDGING CRITERIA Creative ability and skill -- 45 points Appearance and design -- 35 points Neatness -- 20 points MATERIALS -- May. use any material appropriate for a Christmas ornament WHO MAY ENTER -- Each youth club member may enter (1) ornament.

From The District Youth Counselors District II Fall Meeting And Fun Carnival The District II fall meeting and fun carnival will be held on September 25th at Lodge 18, Elgin. The meeting will be short and will begin at 2 p.m.

Registration for door prizes and all contests will begin at 1 p.m. and will continue until 2:30 p.m., so if you plan to enter the contests, you must register them before 2:30 p.m. Judging will begin at about 3:15 p.m. and carnival games at 3:30 p.m.

Everyone attending will receive 20 free tickets to play the carnival games and may purchase more (8 for $1).

Prizes will include grocery items, sodapop, paper goods, etc. A free meal for everyone is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Each family is asked to bring a salad or a sweet plus 2 items from the pantry to be used in the games.

We will have door prizes for the youth and the adults and a drawing for prizes.

For the adults, there will be a horseshoe pitching contest, a pastry contest, and a quilt contest. Prizes in each category will be 1st place -- $25 and a small plaque, 2nd prize -- $10, and 3rd prize -- $5.

We also will need help to run the games. Each lodge was sent a list of where they are asked to help.

A little explanation of the contests -The above prizes will be for the individual horseshoe pitching contest.

There also will be a horseshoe pitching contest for partners. Separate prizes will be awarded for the partner contest. They will be $20 -- 1st place; $10 -- 2nd place; $6 -- 3rd place, with the partners splitting these prizes.

The quilt contest is limited to one quilt per member and must have been made by that member. These are the only requirements.

The pastry contest will only include kolache and strudle. These may be of any variety. This is a change from a previous discussion. Please note kolache and strudel only.

There should be a minimum of 6 kolache, but may be more. They should be on a disposable plate or tray.

You should be willing to donate these kolache to the district to be sold. They

Winners at the State level will be recognized with a certificate and have their ornament on the State Youth Christmas Tree. A picture of the Christmas tree will be on the front page of the Vestnik with the names of the winners.

-SP JST will be judged on appearance, texture, contents, and flavor or taste, also uniform color and size. They must be made by an individual member who is not considered a professional. First place winner may not compete the following year (must skip one year).

The youth will have Christmas tree ornament contest. (Rules by SYD in October 24th Vestnik issue.)

Each youth may enter one homemade ornament and it must be made by that youth. Foam balls may be used to create your own design and use your imagination. The maximum size of the ornament is 3 inches in diameter. The age categories will be same as for YAD and prizes for each age group will be $10 -1st, $7 - 2nd, $3 - 3rd. The first place winner in each age group will be taken by DYC to the museum at the Home Office and will be hung on the Christmas tree in the museum during the Christmas season.

Winners' names will be displayed besides the tree. I hope you have already started and good luck.

A few other ideas of entertainment are planned. A special invitation is extended to all members of all lodges in District II. This year our goal is to have an attendance of 300 members; we hope you are one of them. I'm hoping to see you in Elgin on September 25th.

District V Youth Camp Dear Vestnik Readers, I wrote a letter earlier about District V camp which was shared with District VI. Now, I'd like to share some pictures with you about this very

special camping event.

Also, in my letter, I didn't get a chance to thank a lot of people. First of all, I want to thank all the LITs (Marcy, Jennifer, Landis and Darren), chaperones (Jody Henderson, Mary Karasek, Mr. Dybala), DYC Anita Roye and her assistant, who are from District VI for making this year's camp super great!

I have to say special thanks to the wonderful people from District V. The chaperones were Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis from Lodge 142 and Assistant Youth Leader Lori Groendes from Lodge 88. Lifeguards at camp were also from District V, namely, Keith Kieschnick (Lodge 142), Vernon Hegwood (Lodge 88) and Bobby Allbritton (Lodge 88). Our LITs were all very special people, namely, Crystal Wallace, Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, Michelle Linney, Angela Clayton and Paul Groendes, all from Lodge 88, and Keith Kieschnick from Lodge 142.

The most thanks go to DYC Marie Stayton and her Assistant Nancy Steubing who was also our camp nurse.

So, I send all my thanks to everyone making it such a memorable event.

Youth Club Of Taiton Youth Review Lodge 13, Dime Box State YAD Sunday, August 21, was an exciting and rewarding day for our local Taiton Youth Club members. Lodge No. 30 Taiton won awards in Craft, Talent and Royalty at the State Youth Achievement Day, in Temple, that day.

The highlight of the day was when our District VI Queen Contestant Marcy Dorotik, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Dorotik, all from Lodge 30 Taiton, was crowned State SPJST Queen. Congratulations, Marcy, on a job well done and we look forward to having you represent our SPJST Society in the upcoming year. Marcy's duchess was Sara Dluhos, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Dluhos.

In Individual Talent, Jeanine Dorotik won first place with a dance to "Karma Chameleon" in the 6 - 9 year old division; first place went to Stephanie Roye who danced to "Hungry Eyes" in the 13 - 14 - year old division and first place went to Marcy Dorotik who performed a dance to "Dancin' in Heaven" in the 15 - 17 - year - old division of Individual Talent. Valerie Roye won second place with her dance to "Ole Another group composed of Lenice Kaspar, Jeanine Dorotik, Valerie Roye, Sara Dluhos and Misty Novak did a dance to "La Bamba" and won first in the Junior Group Talent.

Members of Taiton Lodge No. 30 did real well also in Craft competition.

In 13 - 14 age group, Stephanie Roye, won second in Sewing and also in Science/Education. In 10 - 12 Craft, Lenice Kaspar won first in Needlecraft and Craig Dorotik won first in Handicraft. In 6 - 9, Michael Kaspar won first in Pictorial Arts and Constructed Items. Curtis Dorotik won second in Hobby Kits and third in Foods. Jeanine Dorotik won first in Science/Education and Handicraft, and Sara Dluhos won first in Needlecraft.

Congratulations to all the State winners. Thank you to everyone who made State YAD such a success.

Thank you to our State Youth Director Claudette Reese and to our Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar for all your hard work to make our Youth Department worth while and rewarding. Dear Members of District VI, I would like to take this time to thank everyone who made this year's YAD a great success. To all Lodge No. 32 adults and youth "Thank You" for your support. All the sandwiches, cakes, cookies, etc. were very good.

Lodge No. 32 was represented well in the YAD competition. Jason Motal won District VI King and Eric Motal is his Duke. Congratulations to them.

Kendra Richardson won first in Sewing, first in Foods and third in Hobby Kits in the 10 - 12 age group.

John Thomas Richardson was the top winner in points for the Juniors in Lodge 32; Kendra Richardson was second. Eric Motal had top points in Teen and Jason Motal was second.

Eric Motal won first in Pictorial Arts, first in Constructed Items and third in Hobby Kits for the 13 - 14 age group. Jason Motal won first in Foods and third in Pictorial Arts.

At the State YAD, Jason Motal won third in the King competition and Eric Motal third for Duke. In the 15 - 17 age group, Jason Motal won first in

Foods. Eric Motal won third in the Pictorial Arts for the 13 - 14 group.

Dear Readers, On August 21, the SPJST had State Youth Achievement Day at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas. Eleven members from Lodge 13 competed in State. The Talent and Crafts were great.

Our lodge will now begin work on Christmas ornaments that will be judged at the District I fall meeting in New Tabor on September 25th. The winning ornaments will be hung on the SPJST Christmas tree in Temple.

Lodge 30 Youth Celebrate Victory Dear Readers, The youth members of Lodge 30 Taiton were given a victory party on Sunday, August 28, in order to celebrate their outstanding achievements in Craft, Talent, and Royal competitions at State YAD in Temple on August 21st. The party was held at Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Zalman's home in El Campo. Everyone enjoyed swimming and refreshments that consisted of barbecue burgers, chips, and punch. Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karnes No. 93 of Hobson, Texas on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother EDWARD JOHN NOVOSAD, of Karnes City, Texas, who died July 24, 1988 in Victoria Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 84 years, 8 months and 9 days of age.

Brother Novosad was born in Ellinger, Texas on November 15, 1903 to John H. and Mary Chupik Novosad. He lived in East Bernard for 20 years; then moved to Karnes City where he lived for the past 50 years. He was married to Miss Ann Vacek in Panna Maria on May 13, 1938.

He was a member of Ross Volunteers and ROTC at Texas A&M University, graduating in 1926. In Karnes City he managed the ASCS office for 32 years, retiring in 1967. He served 7 years as city councilman and 10 years as mayor of Karnes City. He was a member of the Brethren Church of Smithville, SPJST Lodge Karnes No. 93 and Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28 (paidup), member of Masonic Lodge No. 817 and South Texas Farm and Ranch Club. He was past president of the Karnes City Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club, a member of South Texas Fairs and Stock Show Association, and Bismark Rifle Club.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ann Novosad of Karnes City; brother, Norman N. Novosad of Point Comfort; two nieces and one nephew.

Reverend Lambert Bily and Reverend William P. Davenport officiated at the funeral services in Rhodes Chapel in Karnes City on July 26. Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Smithville by Reverend Henry Beseda and the Masonic Lodge.

Given in marriage by her brother, Johnnie Hoffman, the bride selected a formal gown, which was designed by her Aunt Celestine Darilek of Houston, Texas. The gown was fashioned of candlelight silk taffeta, with a sabrina neckline and fitted bodice adorned with alencon lace and seeded pearls. The skirt was slightly gathered and featured magnificent motifs encircling a cathedral length train, edged entirely by lace and jeweled with seed pearls and sequins.

Kolache Festival SEPTEMBER 10, 19 Early in the state's history a hearty band of Czecholsovakian immigrants arrived in Central Texas to colonize what was to become Burleson County, bringing their own order and traditions to the area. A powerful sense of culture continues and for the last three years has drawn to a focus at the Kolache Festival in Caldwell.

Kolache are small wedding pastries made with fruit or meat toppings and fillings and when fresh and hot they are about the best thing a person can wrap a lip around. Along with spicy sausages and pasta dishes such as goulash, everything adds up to an authentic ethnic display of Czech cooking.

The Kolache Festival, scheduled for Saturday, September 10 from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. will cover the Square in Downtown Caldwell and spill over into he adjoining streets and businesses.

Bakers have competed for three years to win the coveted title of Grand Champion Kolache Baker of Burleson County. By statewide demand, the bake show will open three categories -a County Champion, a State Champion and a Professional Champion! The Kolache Bake Off competition, which will be held in downtown Caldwell, will feature celebrity judges who are coming to cast their votes for the absolutely best kolache.

The American - Czech Day The American - Czech Culture Society will sponsor the 48th American - Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday, October 16, 1988.

The day will start at 9 a.m. with a Catholic Mass (with Czech singing) at the Magnolia Lounge located at First and Grand Streets (by the Lagoon).

The program will start at 11 a.m. at the Band Shell (also by the Lagoon) with the singing of the American and Czech National Anthems, accompanied by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Cyril (Sid) Pokladnik. Hykel - Gerik Wedding Lanette Diane Hykel and James Ray Gerik were united in a double ring ceremony at 2 p.m. on July 23, 1988 at St. Martin's Catholic Church. in Tours with Rev. Isidore Rozycki officiating.

Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Edward R. Hykel of West and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Gerik, Sr. of Mart. Grandmothers are Mrs. Bennie Hessel and Mrs. Emma Dvorak of West and great - grandmother is Rosie Girard of West.

The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a long formal bridal gown made of sheer crystalline with lace and embroidery with a cathedral - length train and a Queen Anne neckline, Basque bodice with Venice and Schiffli lace accented with sequins and ropes of pearls. The sleeves were large shirred puffed with slender cuffs appliqued with Venice lace. The skirt was a full Austrian pouf shirred with wire ruffle trim. The skirt was edged with scalloped Schiffli - lace. The cathedral length train was made up of rows and rows of wired ruffles.

The bride carried a fan with red rosebuds, white roses, carnations, stephanotis, pearls and entwined with a rosary.

For something old, the bride wore her mother's veil, for something borrowed, she carried a pearl rosary belonging to her sister, something new was her bridal gown and something blue, her garter.

Houston, Texas to Fred Buri and Agnes Gotch Buri. Josephine Buri was born in Engle, Texas to Charles Julufka and Julie Marek Jalufka.

They have one son, Fred Charles Buri, daughter - in - law JoAnn and grandson John T. uri.

To honor this special occasion, a dinner and dance were held Sunday, July 31, 1988 at SPJST Lodge 142 in Houston, Texas.

Mrs. Buri wore a turquoise street length dress accented with a pearl and gold bead necklace. She was presented with a silk double orchid corsage by her husband, Fred. Mr. Buri wore a dark green suit and a soft pink silk boutonniere.

The hall was decorated in white trimmed in gold. Gold balloons with gold streamers were hung from the center ceiling and around the hall.

Tables where guests dined were covered in white with gold ribbon down the center and candles surrounded with green leaves.

A delicious dinner of roast beef with all the trimmings was served.

Weinert Groh man provided accordion music throughout the evening for everyone's dancing pleasure.

A special number was played by John Bun on his accordion honoring his grandparents' special occasion.

Attending the registration table was Cecelia Piwetz, niece of Mrs. Buri.

The wedding cake was served by Edith Pavlicek, sister of Mrs. Buri, along with Stephine and Christine Piwetz.

Bessie Dewer, who served as maid of honor for Fred and Josephine, was present to help celebrate.
