In the past years Lodge Praha No. 29 at Taylor has been generous with their part of sharing facilities hosting many district affairs and this year its members, again, hosted District II Youth Achievement Day (YAD), July 10th.

After we arrived it was a good feeling to see a large turnout and to see so many young people performing their talents and skills before a panel of impartial and well - qualified judges who also enjoyed the variety of entertainment. Yes, there were four groups of Beseda dancers; three circles from Seaton and one circle from Lovelady competing in Junior and Senior Beseda. And we wish to add our compliments to the responsible persons who made their pretty costumes. The Lovelady youngsters almost captured the entire talent competition including Senior Beseda.

From eight youth clubs, in District II, there were many entries in all YAD entries and all their crafts were nicely displayed and viewed by anxious entrants as well as parents and visitors.

This years's royalty will be represented by Daryl Kortis from Lodge 47 and Kathy Listiak of Lodge 74, with their duke and duchess. The Junior and Senior awards of District II were awarded to Ben Hyman and Scott McKenney, also from Lovelady.

Members from Lovelady and Seaton lodges have something to look forward to in August when their royalty candidates will compete with the other six district candidates.

After a very busy day, these young people still have one more "tryout" at state competition when the final activities will close the curtain for another youth year. It was evident that those who participated in YAD were satisfied by the judges' final decisions.

The responsible party couldn't have put this YAD over without the assistance of many people working backstage and out of sight, so to speak, in various capacities. DYC Frank Klinkovsky was grateful to those he thanked and recognized including Director Willie E. Kohutek, Assistant DYC Patsy Koslovsky, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, State Youth Director Claudette Reese and Master of Ceremonies Michael Morris, the reigning State King.

From our observations, the YAD seemed to function smoothly which speaks well of Brother Klinkovsky's dedication and determination in whatever he undertakes and should be appreciated by his district's membership. Our congratulations to District II for another very successful Youth Achievement Day! The District II YAD results will be published as soon as the pictures arrive; in the next issue, we hope.

Incidentally, it rained quite a bit in Taylor Sunday and in Temple Tuesday - both days. ***

Last weekend, July 17th District V held their District Youth Achievement Day at Lodge 88, in Houston, and we hope their event was as successful as in the past years. ***

July 24th will be another District Youth Achievement Day in Floresville, which will be hosted by Lodge 107 members. (Refer to District VII DYC Maxine Pavliska's schedule in this issue.) *** Tuesday, July 12, at 1:15 p.m., your editor attended the Supreme Lodge Mid - 1988 quarterly meeting of our Supreme Lodge composed of the five elected SL officers and seven directors chosen at separate district caucuses to be confirmed by the entire delegation to the convention; of course, the 1984 elected directors will serve through December, 1988.

There were a number of items to be discussed and were taken in order.

Old business had been taken care of by noon and new business, which had to be considered, was brought up.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and the Fraternal Activities Committee brought up the study of the Family Recreational Area, Volleyball Contest, the Scrapbook and Poster displays to be used at the Fraternal Congress. It was rather thoroughly discussed and it seems that our SPJST Society is certainly in line to be well represented.

In discussing the subject of a recreational area, which brought a certain amount of discussion and interest shown at the convention, the SL Body decided that the name, temporarily used, should be "SPJST Family Recreational Area" (SPJST FRA) and that SL President Leshikar would be chairman of the project and the SL officers would explore the possibilities and get input by the October, 1988 quarterly meeting of the Supreme Lodge so that the entire Supreme Lodge could finalize plans by the end of the year to be able to send out a "referendum" to the delegates within the six months specified in the convention.

On the way home from the convention, your editor and wife, Maxine, discussed the $150 voted to each delegate for the three extra hours Wednesday night and both of us felt that this was really unnecessary expense and both of us agreed to return it and editor's mileage to begin a fund for the recreational area.

Therefore, we are pledging $349.50 to the "SPJST - FRA Fund," if the project goes through. Just think if all 323 delegates, plus committee members, officers, etc. all pledged to do so, that would amount to over $50,000; that would be a nice start and you would not have to pay it until it became a fact. Wouldn't it be nice to have a plaque there stating: "This SPJST Family Receational Area became a reality by donations made by the XXV SPJST 1988 Convention Delegates." If you agree with this idea, send your name and pledge (do not send money, now) to: "SPJST - FRA Fund," attention: President Howard Leshikar or Secretary/Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, c/o SPJST Supreme Lodge, P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503.

We will publish the names in the Vestnik when they are forwarded to us from the Supreme Lodge; after all, we will only be returning a "gift." ***

SPJST First Annual Volleyball Tournament The Supreme Lodge Board has approved the First Annual SPJST Volleyball Tournament for members 16 and over.

Each lodge is eligible to have two (2) teams represent their lodge at the district playoffs. The first and second place winners in the district will represent their district at the state finals.

Contact your local lodge officer about setting up a team for your lodge.

Teams must notify the District Youth

Counselor of their entry in the tournament. The District Youth Counselor will be the coordinator for their respective district.

The State Tournament will be held November 5, 1988 in Temple.

There will be prizes given at the district and the state level.

Lodge No. 81, Needville Dear Members: The July 12 meeting of Lodge 81 was called to order by our President Charlie Matcek. Mary Werner led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call by Mary Werner was answered by all, except Willie Mae Kuykendall who was absent due to the death of her brother - in - law Richard L. Kuykendall. Our deepest sympathy to all surviving families and friends.

May he rest in eternal peace.

Minutes were read by Mary Werner and accepted as read.

In correspondence, a thank you note was read from Shelly Macha. On her way home from work she lost control of her car while changing channels on her car radio, leaving the highway totally destroying her car and she escaping death and no serious injury.

We are also so very happy for her having escaped all the worse things that could have happened. Surely, the

good Lord and her guardian Angel protected Shelly.

A letter also was read from Brother Leonard Mikeska suggesting that all bar workers attend the drug training course.

Mary Werner gave the financial report which was accepted as read.

Gilbert Walzel gave the Special Fund report. It also was accepted as read.

It was reported that Victor Werner had eye surgery. Victor, we wish you a speedy recovery for perfect -eye sight!

Present at our meeting were convention delegates, President Charlie Matcek, Mary Werner, Benita Walzel, Gilbert Walzel and Ed Susan; all gave very good reports of the convention activities and enjoyable time spent there.

Door prize winners were Delores Macha and Mary Matcek drawn by Louise Neuman.

Our next meeting will be August 9 at 7 p.m.

SPJST Snook Lodge No. 9 Youth Club members nominated Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jakubik for the outstanding Burleson County Senior Citizen Award, recently held at the Snook Brethren Church at Snook, Texas. "Mr. Ernest" and "Miss

011ie" [known to all of the Snook community] are both very active members of Snook Lodge No. 9 and very good supporters of the Youth Club. An appropriate plaque was awarded to both Mr. Ernest and Miss 011ie.

took place. It began at 7 p.m. and finally dispersed at 11 p.m. The friendly warmth with its Czech atmosphere spelled a good time of eating and tasting Becherovska and Slivovice." Mr. and Mrs. Souchek attend all our monthly meetings and Mr. Souchek always tells us a real juicy story. We all enjoy that, especially the one about Dolly Parton.

We lost a member, Willy Angele, a week ago. He had been ill for sometime, but used to attend all the ballroom dances and sat with Viola and Harley Cox. He had been a member of the Entertainment Committee at one time.

Harley Cox handed me a monthly report at our June 13 monthly meeting. I will mention some of the things he reported. He thanked all the Entertainment Committee for their great effort on all dances, Mr. Huber and Ernest Lewis for handling the `Over and Under Table" on Splash Day, Shirley in the office for her support, also his very good supervisors, Bennie Kocich and Gene Barcak. Due to a change in the dance schedule for July through December 1988, he asks that the white cards are destroyed, and pick up the blue cards.

A new country - western band Darrell Appelt and his new Texas Dancetime Band from Columbus,featuring the one and only Leon "Pappy Self." Note -- he will play Friday, October 21 and, Friday, November 11, so mark your calendars, NOW. We had our monthly meeting at Lodge 88 on June 13, with Vice President Marceil Malak presiding in place of President Jerry Ermis who was ill. Marceil did a superb job, and I do hope you told her so. This was just before the convention in Temple, and everyone had a few butterflies, especially the delegates who had never experienced being a delegate, but wasn't it fun?

Carolyn Sager read correspondence from our Needville Rest Home Administrator, Mr. Harvey Marx. He expressed his thanks for a gift from Lodge 88.

Members, remember these dates: August 6 -- Dance to music by the Lone Star Czechs for this one night; it's $1 for ladies and $5 for men; you all come.

August 14 -- Enjoy a Talent Show after you finish a fried chicken w/all trimmings dinner ($4, adult, and $2, child), after you enjoy all the talent by the youth and adults of our lodge, will you donate to the cause? It's a benefit for the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, doors open at 4 p.m., dinner at 5 p.m., program at 6 p.m. (Would you like to be on stage?); August 20 -- Dance to the great music of the Czech Mates; September 11 -- Our Czechfest, with doors opening at 11:30 a.m., a Czech dinner cooked by Czechs of our lodge served at 12:30 p.m. ($5, adult and $2.50, child) -- enjoy being friendly to everyone attending as well as booths, games, cake walk, country store, etc. -a free dance with music by the Polka Patriots from 4 to 8 p.m. can be enjoyed by all of your friends who you have invited. Wednesday, July 20, 1988--VESTN1K/5 Mrs. Barbara Lenny gave a report for the youth, who were looking forward to going to camp on June 27, 1988. The youth had the election of officers and District V Director Jerry Prochazka installed them.

Lillie Spies thanked the ladies for bringing pastry to the Birthday Club booth and Vice President Thomas Marsh gave a report for the Men's Club.

Bobby Miksch, Board of Trustees chairman, gave his monthly report, and everyone should realize the board is a busy body of men and women.

Fiftieth Anniversary Of Lodge 92, Ft. Worth OCTOBER 8, 1988 The 50th anniversary celebration of the building of SPJST Lodge No. 92 located at 3316 Roberts Cut Off Road Our members wish to invite everyone to join us at this Czech Festival which will be held Saturday, October 8, 1988 on the lodge grounds.

There will be booths set up outside with crafts, food, kolache, klobase, barbecue, drinks, carnival, rides and games. The hours will be from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. for outdoor activities; from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., the Jodie Mikula Band will be playing in the hall for your dancing pleasure and entertainment, along with other entertainment during intermission.

After all the outside activities and Jodie Mikula's Band entertain you, the Harold Strand Orchestra will play from 8 p.m. to midnight for a wonderful evening of fun for the whole family. One admission of $5 will cover both bands; the cost of outside activities will be nominal for each separate activity.

The purpose of this early announcement is to let you set your calendar so you can be with us. We are striving to let the outside community in Ft. Worth know the customs of the Czech people in this area. We want everyone who possibly can to wear a Czech costume, bring your children and family and let them know their heritage. We will be dancing, singing and having fun all day long. We urge anyone or any group to rent a space for a booth for a nominal fee starting at $5 will be charged for a booth space.

You will be responsible for setting up the booth and manning it and charging whatever you like and all proceeds will go to the sponsor's booth.

Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Our past meeting of July 12 was very interesting and we also found out that plans are ready and bids were looked at. It seems that the work will be starting in a few days. This work will be done so no dances would be put off.

The cost seems high, but, after it will be completed, the cost may not seem bad.

When we arrived at the lodge Sunday in the back of the building were men gathered around some kettles with oil that were being heated so that the fish fry would start and be ready to eat when someone would make a move to adjourn the meeting.

The Youth Club did lead our members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers had good reports and the convention was discussed. The very good picture was shown to members. I do believe it is one of the best pictures of all delegates, you can really find yourself and others you know. The photographer was lifted up about 60 or 70 feet above the delegates in a machine they call a cherry picker. All delegates did have fun talking to the photographer while he was taking the pictures. After he was through taking pictures, I thought our Editor should also take some in that cherry picker high up, but Brother Sefcik said that he did not care how high he was as long as one of his feet was touching the ground. I thought the way the flag was brought there on horseback by the Bell County Posse, and raised was very nice.

After our meeting adjourned Sister Martha Durham was ready to serve the fish and hush puppies along other good food; her husband and two sons, Jon and Charlie Durham, and a good friend of theirs fried the fish. The ladies had plenty of desserts to finish the meal. We really did enjoy the fish and this, Martha and Dick serve at least once a year. We thank their friend, Ron Holcomb, for making such good hush puppies, because they have their own method of cooking and seasoning the fish. Many thanks to Dick, Ron, Jon, Charlie and Martha (the main boss). This is one way I hope will be a way to get members to come to our meetings and being a way to get new prospects to join the lodge.

Sunshine Chairperson Martha Durham sent birthday cards to members over 65 years of age; there were nine in July. Other members had birthdays but were not present, so we did not get to sing "Happy Birthday" to them. Nancy Paprskar was left off of the birthday list in June, so this is my error. Lodge No. 92 wishes everyone a happy and healthy birthday and many more in the future.

Our Sister Joy Paprskar is in the hospital with some kind of illness so we extend our prayers and wishes for her to hurry and get well. Charlie Paprskar fell and broke a leg so, Charlie, hang in there and soon it will be healed.

Margarette and Don Laymance of Kingsville, Texas are proud parents of a baby boy. Great - grandparents are Clem and Louise Oujesky; they have not seen the new baby as yet but you can be sure lots of effort will be made, soon. Joe and Mary Ann Kozel celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a cruise.. All members extend congratulations to all who are celebrating anniversaries. Clara Kunesh's mother passed away in Buckholts at the age of 101 years.

Evelyn Spacek is her niece and Evelyn attended the funeral Sunday, June 19 (the day the convention was beginning to register) so Evelyn had lots of driving to do that day. We were told that one of our members, Brandy Kubala, who is only 11 years old, has been entering a calf in the stock shows and, in Cleburne, Texas, she has won second and third places. Brandy is the daughter of Larry Kubala and she is the granddaughter of Albert and Helen Kubala. We are proud of Brandy and this shows that the younger generation is looking at the future so'we will have

meat and food. We are grateful for all young boys and girls in the FFA. It makes me feel good when I hear that some of the members and many friends read the Vestnik and say they enjoy reading my writeups. It also helps them to know what is going on in the lodge; like Brother and Sister Henry Langer in a rest home in Weatherford or Sister Vlasta Dolkos in a rest home and the ones who are unable to come to meetings due to age or illness. So, to all the reporters, please write and let your members know that they are not forgotten. This is why the Vestnik is sent to members so they can keep up with the local lodges and our Headquarters has also many writeups.

We really did have a good dance July 9 with music furnished by No. 1 Band -- Jodie Mikula of Ennis; also manager, Joyce Tesar, told me that arrangements have been made to have the Texas Dutchmen to play here

November 19, so be sure to plan ahead for that date.

On Sunday, August 28 is a lodge dance with music by The Czechmates from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On September 18 music will be furnished by Centex Polka Band from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Please remember that the Lodge No. 92's fiftieth anniversary; dance by two good orchestras, games/booths, and entertainment from 10 a.m. until midnight on October 8, 1988, with plenty of food and drinks will be available. Brother Jaroslav and Sister Marcella Kleprlik celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

Members' Golden Anniversary Of Lodge 133 The 50th wedding anniversary was celebrated by Brother Jaroslav and Sister Marcella Kleprlik in the Nix Hospital where Brother Kleprlik was recuperating from a serious illness; in attendance were a few friends and members of the SPJST Lodge No. 133, San Antonio.

Brother and Sister Kleprlik were married in the city of Most, okres

(county) in Duchov, Czechoslovakia on June 18, 1938, in Svateho Ducha Parish. Brother Kleprlik was employed by the State as railway inspector and Sister Kleprlik was teaching school until in 1948 when the Communist government was beginning to takeover.

Sister Kleprlik and her parents decided to come to America and

6/VESTNiK—Wednesday, July 20, 1988 landed in the United States on May 25, 1948, where they were met by Sister Kleprlik's brother and friends, Mr. and Mrs. Kahanek, where they resided until October 23, 1948, when Brother Kleprlik joined them and they decided to make their home in San Antonio, Texas.

Brother Kleprlik went to work for a meat processing company and later for Missouri Pacific as a section bookkeeper and remained with that occupation until he was elected State Secretary for the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association, retiring in 1972 at the age of 65.

Sister Kleprlik worked for a garment factory for three years while going to nursing school part time and, upon graduation, went to work for the State of Texas Chest Hospital where she did nursing duty until she retired in 1972 and joined her husband on intensive travel to Greece, Czechoslovakia and Europe.

Both Brother and Sister Kleprlik were very active in local lodge activities with SPJST and the District VII as previously reported in the Vestnik.

We all wish this fine couple the best of everything for their anniversary and, especially, a fast recovery to Brother Kleprlik who is recuperating at the Narmany Terrace Nursing Home at 602 Bab Cock Road, San Antonio, Texas 78201.

Matula Lodge 133, San Antonio Editor's Note: The 1956 SPJST Convention held at the Hawn Hotel in Temple was the last SPJST Convention which was conducted in the Czech language and Brother Jaroslav Kleprlik took the Proceedings, as secretary, of the entire convention in Czech shorthand and then typed them at home and submitted them to the Supreme Lodge for which work he received $50 (if this editor's memory is correct). Brother Jaroslav and Sister Marcella certainly were and are faithful members. Our heartiest congratulations are extended to this fine couple and we are grateful to Brother Matula for submitting the article and pictures for our members' information.

Family Reunion A Huge Success

By Dominic Netek The Leo Netek family reunion, which was held on June 25, 1988 at the Moravian Hall in Corpus Christi, was a huge success due to the large turnout.

Relatives from all parts of Texas were represented. It was a beautiful family gathering. I remember very well when visiting my father, Leo Netek, in Corpus Christi, he mentioned to me many times and spoke about his boyhood in Czechoslovakia and the beginning in America. One of the statements he frequently made to me was that it was his greatest wish and hope that all of his children will respect one another and keep in touch with each other and here we were celebrating, making his wish and hope come true!

The committee is to be commended for a wonderful job because we all appreciate their hard work, the celebration was well organized and the food was delicious. The committee consisted of Dorothy Tischler, Edna Devaney, Bob Black and Richard Black.

The program began at 3 p.m. with registration, with a welcome by Dorothy Tischler, family history comments by Dominic Netek, meeting and further information by Bob Black.

Prayer Service - Reader No. 1 by Wanda 0. Leary and Reader No. 2 by Edna Devaney. The closing prayer was led by Sister Barbara Netek and Dominic Netek gave the dinner blessing.

A dance at 8 p.m. to the music of Leo Majek's Orchestra was enjoyed by all.

Ending of the program, everyone joined in singing God Bless America, which was dedicated to Grandfather Leo Netek because that was the song he liked very much, his favorite. ***

The Arrival Of Leo Netek To America And To Texas From Europe Among the many immigrants to arrive in America in 1903 and from the country of Czechoslovakia, was our father and grandfather Leo Netek; a young man at the age of 18 with dreams of a better and brighter future.

Upon his landing in Galveston, he was picked up by two friends, Louis and Joseph Havelka. They traveled by covered wagon to Corn Hill, a small community located in Central Texas.

Many of the Czech immigrants had settled in Central and East Texas.

Grandpa's ticket to America was paid by his Uncle Peter, who resided in Granger. The total cost of the trip from Europe was $45.

There was much work to be done by the pioneers of that era. Digging wells for water was a priority, clearing land for agriculture because it was.untamed and building homes for shelter.

Everyone did their share of work.

Grandpa also worked at odd jobs. In 1906, he married Mary ICrnavek.

Shortly thereafter, Grandpa began farming in Corn Hill.

The community was growing steadily, visions of a new church were surfacing. The original church which was established in 1889 in a 12 - foot by 14 - foot building was not suitable any longer. Plans for a new church began. Grandpa was instrumental in implementing the construction of the

majestic, commanding Gothic structure which stands on a hill and can be seen miles away. Travelers along IH 35 going north can see the tall steeple very clearly. Grandmother Mary Netek's parents donated the 18 acres of land for the church, cemetery and community hall, and each is utilized today. Everyone in the community labored feverishly. While the menfolk were busy building the church, the women helped Grandma cook the meals for all of the workers.

My, what a labor of love. The neighbors working so beautifully together. This should be a lesson to people of today - fellowship, dedication, love and concern for one and all. The church is certainly a monument to these pioneers.

Construction of the church was in 1913.

History continues. Grandpa and Grandma moved to Corpus Christi in 1915. He rented a farm near Driscoll, Texas from a Mr. Arnim. Mr. Arnim was a large land owner in the area.

Hard times were on the horizon.

World War I was progressing, the crops were poor due to a drought and jobs were few, so Grandpa set forth traveling to San Antonio and found a job as a carpenter. He helped build the barracks at what today is Fort Sam Houston; this was in 1917. Grandma stayed on the farm with their small children. The story goes on to say times were so bad that the mules had to eat the beans off the mesquite trees.

So in order to have drinking water, Grandma and the two oldest children, Uncle Frank and Aunt Mary (my mother) hauled water once a week in two 55 gallon barrels on a wagon drawn by mules. The trip took one whole day. There was a place on north Staples Street where people got their water supply. I remember mother saying that many times, she and Uncle Frank were sent by themselves to get the water from the town. They were children 9 and 10 years of age. After three months, Grandpa came home to his family and to harvest the crops.

The crops were exceptionally good, due to good rains. In fact, it was said the weeds in the corn patch were so high that the corn had to be harvested by riding on mules.

The following year, in 1919, there were woes again. The most terrible hurricane came ashore and destroyed crops, homes and lives. To this day, stories are told about this ill - fated hurricane. Its force covered much of Texas; in San Antonio the water rose to the second floor of the famous Gunter Hotel. Pictures of the damage are displayed in the lobby. Locally, the disaster is still discussed periodically.

At least once a year, the editor of the local paper writes an article regarding the damage and lives lost. The hardships facing the citizens were terrific. Mr. Arnim saw that some of his renters were having problems and Grandpa was one of them.

Apparently, Mr. Arnim had previously loaned him a sum of money. Mr. Arnim was quite patient as to repayment. It seemed he was always ready to help where there was a need.

In 1920, times were tough once again, so Grandpa borrowed more money -- $500 this time. Mr. Arnim was supposed to have said to him: "That was enough and no more."

Grandpa was quite sure he would be able to repay him Grandpa had stated: "If Nature is on my side, I will make a good crop." Soon the rains did come, the economy began to get better and Grandpa was able to pay off his debts. He was able to also purchase a brand new Model "T" Ford car. Quite

a difference from covered wagon, mules or horses.

A short time later, Grandpa moved his family near the Osos Creek where he continued to farm. In time, he was able to buy a farm located off . what now is Weber Road. All of the children were raised on this farm. He had built one of the finest two - story homes and barn in the area. Some of the children were born in Corn Hill, namely, Frank, Mary, Lydia, Janie and Victor, and the others in Corpus Christi -Geneva, Rudy, Dominic, Helen and Christine; in fact, all of the children were born at home.

On December 20, 1926, Grandma Mary Netek entered into her eternal rest. She passed away on the following day after giving birth to her 10th child, Christine (Black). A neighbor, Mrs. Tillie Malish, was anxious to adopt Aunt Chris, but a decision was made that since my mother (Mary), was grown and still at home, she could help raise the child along with the rest of the children. It's no surprise that often Mary, my mother, felt as if Aunt Chris was one of her own children.

As if times weren't hard enough, the depression time came. In those days, any member of the family who was able to work, regardless of age, did their share. Some of the children recall gathering the crops and cotton was selling for only 4 cents a pound. There are memories of the small children being left under the cotton wagon and trying to fend off the bugs, spiders, etc. while the older brothers and sisters picked the cotton.

In 1929, Grandpa married Anna Svatek, his second wife, who was born in Shiner, Texas and came from a family of 12 girls. Grandma Anna had two children, Frances (Hartigan) and Emil. Now there was a family of 12 children.

There were two double weddings in the family; in fact, two in one year, namely, Uncle Victor and Aunt Janie, and Uncle Rudy and Aunt Geneva.

Uncle Don has stated that, "We have lots to be thankful for; none of us ended in the penitentary, all married and have children and, thank God, not one of us is on the welfare roll."

The descendants of Leo Netek have done well professionally; there are farmers, carpenters, teachers, secretaries, computer programmers, electricians, CPAs, also a religion vocation and the list goes on.

Several of the members of the family have gone to their eternal rest, namely, Grandpa Leo Netek, Grandma Mary Netek, Grandma Anna Netek, Uncle Frank Netek, Aunt Janie Polasek and Uncle Emil Netek. "They are not lost who find the light of sun and stars and God. May they rest in peace."

Most of us know the rest of the story. I, personally, have many fond memories of the family. I sincerely appreciate all of the love, caring, wisdom shared. Let us all put into practice these virtues for generations to come. One of the statements made to Uncle Don by Grandpa at one time, "I always want, wish and hope that all of you, my children, will respect each other and keep in touch with one another." Dallas Circle Of Czech Women Some of you perhaps thought I had forgotten to report on our June meeting, but to tell you the honest truth, I just put it off for awhile until it got closer to our August meeting and also due to the SPJST Convention information taking priority in the Vestnik; probably just sounds like a lot of excuses.

We did have a nice turnout at our June 2 meeting even though the weather was a bit stormy. President Podhrasky opened the meeting with the pledge to our flag and then asked for a moment of silence for Joe Janicek (Bertha's brother), Vlasta Parma (Rose Ann Parma's mother - in - law), and Jack Childress (Libby Slovak's brother - in - law).

Our guests were Alvin Elsik, Gilbert Kalich, Phil Reames, Frank Houzvicka, Julius Podhrasky, Bob Zvolanek, John Trojacek and Frank Noska.

Some of our sisters reported on the sick list are Olga Patak, Josie Kankrlik and Esther Cunningham. Lydia Alholm's husband had surgery.

President Podhrasky presented a beautiful plaque to Anne Zvolanek for the outstanding job she did as our president for the years she served 1984 - 1987. Thanks to John Morris who donated the plaque.

The minutes were read by Secretary Reames and the treasurer's report made by Vicki Kohn was approved.

Vicki Kohn also reported on our Memorial Fund. To this date, we have 95 members, 20 honoraries; since 1935, we have 81 deceased members.

Correspondence report was made by Mary Sebestik -- "Thank you" notes were read from the following: Helen Pokladnik thanking our Circle for the money gift sent to her mother, Frances Balela; the Bessie Brozek family for our sympathy and donations; the CEFT Foundation for our donation in memory of Mildred Patak; the American Heart Association for our donation in memory of Bessie Brozek; from Leslie and Rose Noska for our remembrance of their 50th wedding anniversary; literature from the Dallas Alliance Club; and from the Lillian Spain family for our donation.

Sunshine Report -- Libbie Elsik sent a sympathy card to Bertha Podhrasky.

Liddie Pavelka sent a sympathy card to Nelda and Thomas Skinner, and a get well card to Frances Baleja.

Birthdays in June were celebrated by Ella Bartos, Dianne Gallia, Frances Konakovsky, Lillie Drzewicki and Betty Grier.

Esther Cunningham reported on the American - Czech Cultural Society.

Vicki Kohn reported on the Fourth of July Picnic to be held at the Sokol Hall in Dallas. (By this time the picnic is past and I am happy to report it was a success and a very good time was had by all who attended.) Everyone voted to have another picnic next year.

Hostesses for June were reported to be Vicki Kohn, Libbie Elsik, Liddie Pavelka and Lydia Kartous.

Door prizes were furnished by Millie Noska, Zdenka Skotak, Alice Roberts and Lydia Kartous.

Donations were made in memory of Joe Janicek by John and Evelyn Trojacek, Gilbert and Bessie Kalich, Libbie Slovak, Rose Kopecek, Jerry and Vicki Kohn, Bob and Anne Zvolanek, Tom and Alice Roberts, Mary Sebestik, and Julius and Bertha Podhrasky; in memory of Wesley Blatney by Gilbert and Bessie Kalich;

in memory of Vlasta Parma by Rose Kopecek. Donation of cards was made by Bertha Podhrasky,' and stamps donation was made by Zdenka Skotak.

Under old business, By - Law Committee Chairperson Liddie Pavelka made a very thorough report.

The committees appointed by the president of our Circle are: Reporters (both English and Czech), Telephone, Hostesses, Birthday Cards, Sunshine (gifts and cards, Dallas - Oak Cliff) and Nominating.

It was reported that a Scholarship Fund for Irene Halouzka's son (who was killed in a hit - and - run accident) was started in Michigan.

Other announcements from the floor were made by Vicki Kohn regarding the Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council picnic and by Bertha Podhrasky in regard to the Southern District Slet.

Sister Rose Kopecek was honored this year by having the 1988 Sokol District Slet dedicated to her. Rose served as secretary for the organization, many times writing the minutes in English and then translating them back into Czech for the membership when she read them. We congratulate Rose for this honor well deserved.

Also in the news of our members is that Lillian Moran was enjoying the company of her friends from San Francisco, California with whom she worked for the Post Office while living in San Francisco for many years.

I would like to mention that my youngest son, Jonathan, 16 years old, was crowned King of the Young Czech Teens at the Catholic Czech Club on June 25th. He is also the treasurer of this club.

In closing, let me remind each of you that we will resume having our meetings in August. I do hope each of you enjoyed a happy summer and that everyone will be back in attendance at our August meeting. Time does pass by, and it seems that we never really get done what we planned to do before anothe season is on top of us again.

Congratulations to all of the elected officers at the recent SPJST Convention and now let us look forward to the national election and pray that the people of these United States go out to vote and show an interest in our country and what's in store for our future.

Planning Trip To Pla-Mor Czech Festival You are invited to attend the 1988 PLA - MOR Czech Days Polka Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska.

This is the 10th annual Chervenka trip fom Texas to the land of Nebraska polka bands. You've heard about it; now is your chance to be a part of it. It is very likely that we (for the 7th consecutive year) will run two buses.

In case of oversubscription, reservation requests will be filled on a "first come, first served" basis.

Reservations should be made as soon as possible.

We will leave Texas on Thursday evening, August 11, 1988, with bus pick - up points at Round Rock (2 p.m.), Temple (3 p.m.), West (4 p.m.), Dallas (6 p.m.), Roanoke (7 p.m,), Denton (8 p.m.). We will rest stop, mostly to stretch and for coffee and rolls if available, in the . Oklahoma City

vicinity and the Wichita or Salinas vicinity; so participants will need to eat before leaving home and should take along some snacks and drinks. Also dress comfortably (jeans OK) for bus ride.

We should arrive at the Motel 6 in Lincoln at about 6 a.m. Friday, August 12th. Rooms will be ready and waiting, for a full day of rest, before the festival starts that evening at 5 p.m. A Happy Chef restaurant, is located next to the motel, open 24 hours, and serves good food at reasonable prices. Food and refreshments also are available at the ballroom. BYOB bottle NOT allowed in ballroom. Dancing will be until midnight but there will be one bus leaving ballroom for motel early, about 10 p.m.

On Saturday and Sunday, dancing at the ballroom will be from 12 noon to 12 midnight. Our buses will take you to the ballroom and will return, rest, and early shuttle you back to the motel. Also available without additional charge will be a visit to Wilber, "Czech Capitol of Nebraska," a drive - through tour of Lincoln and the Pla - Mor Polka Mass.

We will leave the motel, promptly at 7 a.m. on Monday morning, August 15 with delayed breakfast and lunch along the way, plus stretch and coffee stops.

Estimated times of return arrival are 9 p.m. in Dallas, 10:30 p.m. in West, 11:30 p.m. in Temple, and 1 a.m. in Round Rock.

The prices for the four nights in the motel and the bus trip this year are the same as last year: $155 per person from Dallas and Denton and Roanoke; $170 per person from West; and $185 per person from Temple and Round Rock, based on double occupancy.

Festival gate admission is $5 per person per day, but I will have a ticket good for all three days for only $13, if purchased in advance (with reservation, or you may buy from me on the bus).

Sebek Reunion The family and friends of Joe, John and Frances (Koslovsky) Sebek are invited to a family reunion on Saturday, August 6, 1988 at SPJST Lodge No. 24 in Cyclone. Trojacek Reunion The descendants of the late John, Frank, Josef, Anton, Mary (Cepak), and Annie (Krajca) Trojacek (children of Vaclav Trojacek and Veronica Honsa of Radetice, Bohemia) will meet Sunday, July 24, 1988, at the Sokol Gymnastic Center, Highway 34E, Ennis, Texas. Lodge 17 New Tabor Youth Club meets the first Sunday of the month at the mother lodge in New Tabor. The Youth Club has 34 active youth involved in several projects; namely, Adopt - A - Highway, Adopt - A Grandparent, Kolache Festival and dancing the Beseda at community events.

The Youth Club has been organized for 24 years and is under the direction of Susan Skrabanek.

The youth of Lodge No. 74, Lovelady have elected new officers for the coming year. They are President Scott McKenney, Vice President - Kim Gay, Secretary - Matt West, Treasurer - Travis McKenney, Reporter - Tanya Haynie and Sgt. - at - Arms -- Sherry Michka.

Our Senior Group Talent also clogged to "Fiddlin' Man" at the 25th SPJST State Convention. The group consisted of Scott Listiak, Travis McKenney, Scott McKenney, Kathy Listiak, Sherry Michka, Tallula Hyman and Jenifer West.

This summer we are saying good bye to three of our members. They are Tallula, Kibo and Ben Hyman; their family is moving to the island of Maui in the Hawaiian Islands. We will all miss them.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, July 20, and camp starts on the 21st.

Michelle Linney gave the treasurer's report and the balance was $33.80.

No fund raising was planned for this month. A car wash is planned for August 6 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

You remember that in your study of English, a pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. In Czech, there are 7 types of pronouns.

1. Personal: ja, ty, on, ona, oni, ony, my and vy.

2. Possessive: maj, tvuj, jeho, jeji, nag , vas, etc.

3. Demonstrative: ten, ta, to, tento, tato, toto, onen, ona, ono.

4. Interrogative: kdo? co? kterr? jaW el?

5. Relative: kter)"T, jeni (who, which, that...), kdo, co.

6. Indefinite: Nado, nekter, n'ejak*, kdo-si, co-si; quantitative pronouns: kazdy, v gechen; sam, sama, samo, tyz, tae, ta latter all expressing identity.

7. Negative: Nikdo, nic, *** 1. Personal pronouns: the longer forms— mne, mne, tebe, tobe— are used in emphasis and after prepositions. The shorter forms— mi, me, te, ti— are used when no stress is needed, and are used AFTER the stressed word.

2. Possessive pronouns: correspond to the personal pronouns. For the 1st person singular, the possessive pronoun is milj (ma, me) and plural: na g . For the 2nd person singular, it is tvuj (tva., tve)— plural vas (vase). For the 3rd

person singular, masculine and neuter, the possessive pronoun is jeho, which remains invariable; for the 3rd person singular feminine, it is jeji; for the 2nd person plural, it is jejich, for all 3 genders. It also remains invariable.

3. Demonstrative pronouns: ten, ta, to, tento, tenhle. Colloquially, tamten or tamhle is used for "onen" (yonder, that one). The gender of course, determines which you use.

4. Interrogative pronouns: Kdo, koho, komu, o kom, kYm; co, eeho, emu, o eem, elm? pro co, proe, nae, zae.

Kter*, ja14— the distinction between these 2 is not always strictly observed.

5. Relative pronouns: Kdo— he who.

JenZ' is used mostly in literary style; in speech it is replaced by "kter*"— instead of mill', jeho znam, we say mug , ktereho znam.

6. Indefinite pronouns: nado, 'later*, nejak, Wade, nekdy; the suffix si: kdo-si, co-si, kde-si, kdy-si, also the suffix -koli: kdokoli, cokoli, jaky koli, kterkoli; also the prefix lec: lec-kdo.

Ka14 may be used only with countable objects; v gechen for uncountable objects. In the plural, v gichni does duty for both countables and uncountables.

Ex.: kald9' Nova, kalda iena, kalde devee. vgichni lido, vgechny zany, vgechny chleby, vgechna deveata.

Sam means "alone": byl jsem Lam sam.

Verbal prefixes.

1. Besides verbal adjectives formed from the passive participle (see lesson 49) we shall mention two more important types of verbal adjectives:

a) Verbal adjectives denoting purpose: psaci stroj— typewriter (machine made, intended for writing). These adjectives are formed from the past participle by means of replacing the final 4 by the suffix -ci (from imperfective verbs mostly).
