[Author Unknown] It is here. Yes, conventiontime is present for all practical purposes, although it is still two or three days away. When many of you read these lines the third day of the convention will be well underway; for others, who receive the Vestnik Thursday and later, it probably will be over. Since there will be NO Vestnik dated June 29, we will try to give you some pertinent facts and highlights in the next issue -July 6th; of course, in many cases, your delegates will have given you members various news by that time when they have returned home from Temple. We hope they'll be able to report a good, progressive convention for the good future of our SPJST Society and also report having a good, healthy and enjoyable time spent with their fellow fraternalists. There are a few subjects that have to be considered and resolved to help our fraternal Order progress better in a more fraternal and harmonious manner in the next four years and continue into the 1990s and toward our 100th anniversary and on into the next century. The future poses problems and the financial future is a question mark itself, plus natural problems adding their questionable uncertainty such as the present drought in the central United States and the uncertainty of the future of oil, etc.; however, this writer has confidence that our Society has the ability to overcome any problems. When we see the problems banks and other financial institutions have, we can be thankful for the prudent and sound ways our investments have been managed. If the convention were to adopt the titles of vice presidents to the secretary treasurer and financial secretary departments, it would not matter to this writer, however, it is doubtful that Brother Mikeska and Brother Mikulas would and/or could work more conscientiously, honestly and sincerely than they do now. The old quotation that "Titles do not a man or woman make" holds true in their case.

While writing these lines, this editor looks forward to a fruitful XXV Convention of our SPJST. May it be so!

The paper is thicker, whiter and, therefore, less of it goes on a 1,000 pound (one - half ton) roll which newspaper print comes to printshops on plus, naturally, it costs more and the price of newsprint is continually on the increase, as everything else. We will wait to see how our convention delegates decide on the Publication Committee's recommendation after the PC discusses it with the Supreme Lodge.

We hope all our members and readers will have a safe and jovial Fourth of July. While many of us anticipate to celebrate the occasion mainly for what it represents, at the same time, our SPJST Society will enter its 92nd year bringing this editor's main thought: May the star continue shining brighter as each year passes by and that our SPJST will remain a fraternal Society among our future general membership. It's time again for District Youth Achievement Days to get under way, beginning with District III on Sunday, June 26, 1988 at Lodge No. 66 in Elm Mott.

District Youth Counselor Bessie Petr has her program posted in the Youth Section for your reference.

Kindly read it and come to the YAD with a positive attitude to listen and observe the youth members' various talents, which they have prepared for your enjoyment.

Lodge 66 (better known as Linden Hall) has very comfortable and spacious facilities and its officers, committees as well as members extend a cordial invitation to reminisce over some good old days witnessed at Linden Hall. This being the young people's day, encourage your members to attend the event and let us support them all the way! ***

Chewing a wad of gum after meals may be good for kids' teeth, and yours, too. According to a study at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, the act of chewing gum for 20 minutes after a meal neutralized the decay - causing acids that are present after eating anything from a well balanced meal to a junk - food snack.

The mouths of the people who didn't chew gum stayed acidic for several hours; the gum chewers generated neutralizing saliva that was pumped between their teeth, washing away the food particles that can lead to plaque and cavities and restoring their mouths to their natural pH balance in 20 minutes. The real shocker: It worked as well with sugared gum as with sugarless -- so long as the chewer didn't pop in a fresh, sugary stick when the sweetness was gone 3 minutes later. Since sugar does promote tooth decay, experts agree that it's best to stick with sugarless gum and that people who wear braces or have loose fillings should avoid gum altogether. ***

Wednesday, June 22, 1988—VESTNiK/3 "Happy Birthday" was wished to Jo Lee Shiller, June Harwell and Mary Posival.

"Happy Anniversary" was wished to Milton and Jo Lee Shiller, our 4th one already.

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Dear Readers: Our regular monthly meeting was held Friday night, June 3rd. Due to the absence of President Johnnie Krizan, the meeting was convened by Vice President Robert Dobecka.

The pledge was led by Tammi Dobecka and Sharon Hrabal and the SPJST motto was read by Tammi Dobecka.

The reading of minutes was read by Karen Kroll; she also gave her treasury report.

Financial report was given by George Straten who also gave a report of the Board of Trustees' meeting held Friday night, May 27th. He reported mostly on the discussion we had about our annual lodge picnic coming up Sunday, July 17th. The chairmen for each committee were appointed and voted by our membership at our last meeting. More on this later.

A sympathy card was sent to the Joseph Ajmer family by Willie Mae Schuetz on the death of his mother.

Willie Mae also gave her report on all her activities that were held lately and the project they are working on every Friday night to enter in the YAD at Linden Hall on June 26th. We hope that many of our members will attend since it is here in our area and there is always plenty of entertainment and socializing and glad to see members from other lodges that you haven't seen for quite a while.

At our last meeting, the supper served before our meeting was by Willie Mae Schuetz, Robert and Lydia Dobecka. Thanks to you for a good meal.

Our next board meeting will be held Friday night, July 1st and our regular lodge meeting will be held Friday night, July 8th at 8 p.m. Supper will be served before our meeting by the Edward Hykel family; all are asked to come who can.

The meeting door prize was won by Willie Mae Schuetz. The other progressive prize names drawn were Fred Mechall, $10; the other $10 prize name drawn was Rita Svacek and the $3 was drawn for Betty Zapalac; none were present.

Remember the meetings -- Board of Trustees,' July 1 at 8:45 p.m.; Lodge Meeting and Family Night (supper served at 7 p.m.), July 8th. You all come!

Buckholts Dear Members: Lodge 15 President Leslie Sakewitz opened the regular meeting by leading our members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present, except Vice President Joe Zajicek.

Brother Leslie welcomed our guest, Thomas Harwell.

On the sick list were Anton Svetlik and Ann Balusek.

Secretary June Harwell's, Treasurer Pat Hillman's and Financial Secretary Sidonia Svoboda's reports were approved as read.

The Buckholts School reunion turned out to be a huge success. If you missed the reunion, you sure did miss a big time but we will have another one next year so plan on coming. President Leslie thanked everyone who helped in any way.

The next big event to happen will be the Cotton Festival August 6. Friday night, August 5, we will have a dance so each member is asked again to bring cakes, pies or kolache for the club to sell.

Well, we finally had some rain in this area and everything sure is growing.

The garden is really coming in so everyone is busy canning. Hello to Brother Ed and Sister Tillie Dornak from Blessing; sure was glad to see you all!

Well, I better go for now and I'll see you at the next meeting.

50-Year Recipients Recognized

Brother Albert Olsovsky, president of Moravia Lodge No. 23, recently presented 50 - year membership pins to Sister Frances Klapuch and Sister Doraine Buck [right].

Lodge No. 24, Cyclone The June meeting of Lodge 24 was held Tuesday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Thanks to all our members who took the time to attend.

Recognized on the sick list this month is Pam Mikeska who had her tonsils removed. E.J. Geistman, who was reported on the sick list last month and who was in the hospital, is now home. To all our members we wish good health.

District Youth Counselor Frankie Klinkovsky was with us at our meeting to install the new Youth Club officers.

Youth Club officers for the upcoming year are President - Christy Marek, Vice President - Steve Bruggman, Secretary - Melissa Holtman, Treasurer - Kristie Waits, Reporter Melanie Zavodny and Sergeant - at Arms - Michael Harvell.

Congratulations to these leaders of our Youth Club and may you all have a very productive and fun - filled year.

All youth of our lodge are reminded of upcoming events. Youth Achievement Day will be held at Taylor on July 10th. Entry cards are due to Frankie Klinkovsky by June 21st; also, District II camps will be held July 21 - 27 at Camp Val Verde.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs Fred Kalfus who will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in June.

On August 14th there will be a District II Volleyball Tournament. For more information about this contact Carol Chervenka.

Joe Sebek will be our kitchen chairman for the remainder of the

Our Bingo Committee again informed us that it is time to make another donation from the Bingo profits being realized by our lodge.

Tarok: It's More Than A Game!

Years ago when your ancestors first came to this country, little did they realize the future of their fate. As is with all cultures, they brought bits and pieces of their heritage to remind them of where they came from, who they were and as a comfort to hold on to, something that was familiar in a very unfamiliar environment.

To the Czech people, one of these "comforts" was a card game called.

Taroks. A very different card game that involves a little bit of skill and a lot of luck (or vice versa depending on who you are talking to).

Years ago when all the work was done and there was a need to go to town, your grandfather or great grandfather might have slipped a deck of oversized strange looking playing cards into his belongings. Once in town, they would find each other, talk about old times and play the game.

Sometimes these games would last for hours; sometimes on into the night.

Occasionally people would play, but not as they did in the past. Only the true enthusiast of the game persisted; and, lucky for us, there were many.

People like Daniel P. Hejl, my father in - law, who kept the game alive. He not only taught his children to play, but also challenged his daughter's suitors to learn the game.

Three years ago the game was revived. Thanks mainly to the efforts of Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and Tournament Director Bud (BOB) Petty.

Howard, a true fraternalist and fair Tarok player himself, used the game as one of many ways to create tournament play in the Society.

Howard knew what the game would do for people and how it could help the Society. With the help of knowledgeable players and the genius of tournament organizer Bud Petty, the first annual Tarok State Tournament was held at Lodge 29 Taylor in 1986. The benefits from that first experiment were immediate.

People who had not played in years began to play; people who did not know how to play wanted to learn.

Since that first tournament the game blossomed. Some lodges (Seaton, New Tabor, Ft. Worth, Waco and Taylor) have Tarok teams who challenge each other for trophies and bragging rights. Lodges hold special or family nights to play the game. The State Tournament has grown from 28 participants just three years ago to 72 players in the 1988 tournament. People are visiting other lodges to play, to learn or to teach.

This new interest brought our Society more than just a game. It not only brought back some of its heritage, but also helped to rekindle the flame of fraternalism. Fraternalism is the , key word here. Whether it be Tarok, dominoes, an active youth club, picnic or any other lodge, district or state function; we are not the Society that our founders worked so hard for without Fraternalism.

That aspect plays an important role not only in our Society but also in the community in which we live. In today's world of violence, job stress and the beleaguered American family; it is comforting to know that there is a place where you can take your family and truly enjoy yourself in a safe and fraternal environment. To Howard Leshikar and Bud Petty, I would like to thank you, on behalf of all Tarok players, for what you have given back

This writer has always boasted on the Tarok capabilities of Lodge 47 and always will (1988 Tarok State Champ Claudette Reese, my wife and member of Lodge 47); however, I wouldn't take money to Taylor if I were you.

The Taylor team led by team captain Bobby Wuensche came to learn about lodge challenge tournaments and then began to teach Seaton how to play the game. The best part of the day and the most important is the fraternalism that the two lodges shared. Getting together and, playing cards was just plain fun. Taroks was just the means; the end was fraternalism.

The two lodge teams contained 12 players each, just 4 shy of the number of competitors who enjoyed the first state tournament three years ago. This pair of dirty dozens included some famous celebrities including finalists from all of the state tournaments thus far, and all from Taylor.

Aside from these professionals there were also many newcomers to the game on both sides.

The Tarok players at Lodge 47 wish to congratulate Bobby and his team on

Lodge No. 47, Seaton Dear Brothers and Sisters: The June 3rd meeting was called to order by Vice President Calvin Skrabanek who presided because President Jerry Pechal was not feeling well. Brother Emil J. Hejl sat in as vice president.

Flag Bearers Tommy Gibson and Amy Kohutek brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. A moment of silence was held for Sister Frances Ondrasek and Brother Lawrence E. Graves, Jr. May these departed members rest in eternal peace and the deepest sympathy to surviving families. Honor to their memories forever.

Visitors recognized were Ann Balusek, Gertrude Kahlig and Freddie Schroeder.

Sister Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives with President Pechal absent.

Minutes of May 1st meeting were read and approved. Correspondence included a thank you from Martha and Alfred Klusacek for visits, calls and cards during Brother Alfred 's hospitalization in Temple and now at the Waco VA Center; thank you from the Brother Lawrence Graves family for wreath; thank,you from Brother William Bartek family for wreath; thank you from Sister Frances

Wednesday, June 22, 1988—VESTNIK/5 Ondrasek family for wreath and memorial; letters from SL President Brother Howard Leshikar about the participation in the Domino Tournaments and the forthcoming Volleyball Tournaments and a letter from Sister Lessie Callan of Austin thanking us for the hospitality shown the 50 - year pin recipients including her brother, Brother Lomis Schneider and herself. She enjoyed seeing her former classmates and neighbors and visiting with them. We also received the AIDS Brochure.

New members accepted were Dustin Blake Breazeale, Denise Hosch and Lisa Sodek and transfer in of Patricia J. Pospisil from Lodge 24. Welcome to all four and we are proud you chose our lodge for membership.

Those hospitalized since the last meeting were Sister Dolphina Krahulik and Brothers Woodrow Chervenka, Johnnie Elsik, Sr., Kenneth Pechal, Alfred Klusacek and Jerry Pechal who had to stay in the hospital, the night of the meeting. "Get Well" wishes are expressed to all of you and hope good health will be yours very soon.

President Pechal's report was read

by Vice President Skrabanek: Picnic is here in two days, free drinks for workers Saturday and Monday while cleaning up (hope good weather will prevail on Sunday) and it did! Perfect weather but the president had to spend the day in the hospital. Vice President stated he, Elmer Skrabanek and Adeline Kohutek had applied fire ant control before the picnic and that the filters will be changed Saturday at 4 p.m.

All of the chairpersons of the picnic asked for help on Sunday. Treasurer, financial secretary and chairpersons gave monthly reports.

The Board minutes were read by Wallace Jez. Willie Brother Kohutek E. commented on the sales representatives' seminars and the excellent rate books that were distributed to those present.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky reported on the camp, YAD and the Volleyball Tournament. Brother Tim Reese commented on the volleyball, the Tarok Tournament with Lodge 29 on May 21 and the family night on June 17 at 7 p.m.

Under new business, audit of all books was set for Wednesday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m. and the next lodge meeting set for Friday, July 8 at 7:30 p.m. but due to wedding preparations for a Saturday wedding reception, it will be Thursday, July 7 at 7:30 p.m.

At this time, I had to leave the meeting and take my husband to the hospital, right in the middle of setting the next meeting date.

There were four who have birthdays in June every year, namely, Brothers Frank Klinkovsky and Calvin Skrabanek and Sisters Ruby Bolton and Martha Klusacek. I hope you had a "good" one and many more. I know Brother Frank and Sister Irma Klinkovsky are celebrating a wedding anniversary this month.

Congratulations and many, many more. If others celebrated, I beg forgiveness; I was not given the information. Congratulations!

On behalf of President Pechal, I wish to thank everyone for all the work you did at the lodge picnic and thanks to everyone for the donations of food, plants and canned goods for booths and items for the auction. Dear Members: On Sunday, July 16, Lodge No. 72 Cameron held a family picnic at the American Legion Hut in Wilson Ledbetter Park. The lodge provided the main dish, drinks and supplies.

Each family was asked to bring a salad, vegetable or dessert. The social started at 2 p.m. A special presentation was made to 50 - year member Sister Christine Slavik.

The lodge's next quarterly meeting will be held Monday, July 11 at Sister Marie Moore's home at 7 p.m.

Dear Members: On June 14 at 7 p.m., our President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order.

Our guests were Clarence Reininger and Mike Hilsher of Lake Jackson of SPJST Lodge No. 170.

Edwin Susan led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. We remained standing for a few moments of silent tribute to our departed members Anton Wleczyk and Lester Luedke.

Secretary Mary Werner had the roll call of officers; all were present. She also read the correspondence.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall gave the financial report.

Gilbert Walzel gave the Special Fund report. All reports were accepted as read.

Mike Hilsher and Clarence Reininger spoke to us about Lodge 170 of Lake Jackson wishing to merge with our Lodge 81. After a short discussion and unanimous vote, we welcomed their members to merge with our lodge. We look forward to the merging day meeting and meeting all you members.

Rose Askew was reported convalescing at home after a serious illness.

Lodge No. 84, Dallas Dear Members: The pledge to our flag was led by Sister V. Gerlich who just returned from Rome, Italy. Welcome back! A moment of silence was observed for Brother Ed Sharp, to his family, we extend sincere sympathy.

Minutes of our last meeting were read by Secretary Salac.

Correspondence included a note from Sister Vickie Gerlich, a thank you from the Ball Team for use of the hall and facilities for dance and a letter from SPJST Supreme Lodge.

Sunshine Committee reported get well cards were sent to Sister Justine Marie Andreason, Rose Scott, Wanda Petr, Jackie Kenney, Jamie L. Novak, Joe Pokladnik and Emil Chmeler.

Baby cards went to Cindy and David Edwards -- baby girl, and Kim and Steve Crow -- baby girl.

Congratulations!

Ball Club -- Brother Ben Jarma gave a report on the dance and thanked all who supported them.

New members or members adding insurance were Lesley Sims, Daniel Toupal, Patty Toupal, Aaron Tornton, Casey Jarma and Holly Jarma.

House Committee Chairman Adolph Salac reported overhead wire on outside of building and outside eight were installed. Thanks to him and Brother Olson and Sister Evelyn helped clean and mow the grass. Many thanks to Sister Carlyn Ondrusek for donating a new lawn mower and Brother Olson for the security wire, reported by Brother Salac.

Fraternal Coordinator Schulz reported on dues and the "No Smoking" signs being made, also a design being made for membership cards.

Youth Leader Petr had a meeting on both clubs today and they were practicing the Beseda for YAD. Congratulations to Amber and Carl Ondrusek who were asked to be in the Beseda Circle at the convention next week and also congratulations to Meribeth Novak, who will be doing a dance number in Temple, also.

Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council meeting for picnic and meeting June 16 at Sokol on Greenville Avenue.

The Czech Culture meets July 25th.

No. 88 News

Our "Splash Day" and "Homecoming" celebration on June 5, 1988 was a great success. Everyone had a good time; it started with a delicious meal free to all lodge members who had paid their Lodge 88 dues. This is one way of reciprocation for belonging to such a worthwhile Society. Willie Wehring prepared the delicious beef barbecue and Annie Vala, with her kitchen group, prepared the rest of the meal. We, the Birthday Club, thank all the ladies who brought pastry to the Birthday Club Pastry Booth. I've never seen so much, and it disappeared like snow in August climate. To me, that's an indication it must have been delicious. There was so much going on at the same time, it made your head swim; children in the well - guarded pool, Rybak's Orchestra playing their hearts out on the Gazebo, a spinning wheel with many gifts from the officers and sales representatives, Bingo from 2 to 4 p.m., Birthday Club drawing and, last, but not least, a free dance by Rybak Orchestra. The Blue Room was open and filled to capacity all afternoon.

The entertainers were Estelle Kelly, our super pianist, Philip Noble Keating with the "Gut Bucket" made with a metal wash tub. You'd be surprised the harmony he and Estelle have. Harry Finn "Bubba" was our soloist. I mean Harry sang all the songs from the 50s. I think he still sings as well as he did 40 years ago.

Nat, our bartender, usually feels lonesome since he never has a crowd like this any other time. He was kept busy all afternoon -- right, Nat? We missed many of our sick members who are usually there. Ellen Miculka is in the hospital, Amos Kadlecek is at home after being in the hospital for 2 weeks, Mrs. Joe "Kitty" Knapick was out for a while with back trouble. It was so nice to see her doing so well and able to participate Sunday.

We must never give up -- there are always better days ahead, or, let's say, clouds with a silver lining. Let's pray for our sick members and friends.

The Blue Room Committee, Margaret Allbritton and A.J. Stayton asked me to announce the next party which is July 24, 1988 from 4 to 9 p.m.

There will be a fried chicken dinner, drinks, door prizes and a dance by Henry Repka. All this will cost each person $10. I mean for all THAT! This will be a party you'll remember a long time, and too, you'll ask "When will we have another one?"

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, June 22, 1988 Good news, this morning (6 - 10 88) Ellen Miculka is doing wonderful and she told me she's going home Saturday, without having to have surgery.

Royal Warnasch has been ailing a little, too, and he is doing well, also.

He and Laura Bell will go dancing to Al Pierson this Saturday.

Franklin and Almeda Bravenec are leaving for San Francisco, California

in the morning. Their oldest grandchild, Kristi, is graduating from high school.

A group of adult lodge members joined the Youth Club Sunday, May 29 to the Arlington Theaters to see "Little Shop of Horrors" that featured our former youth club member B.J. Cleveland. We had a lot of laughs and was enjoyed by all.

Brother Dr. Mark Mamula from New Haven, Connecticut was in Houston for 2 days and made speeches to 3,000 doctors; so he spent the Memorial weekend in Fort Worth to visit all the Milan family and he also went to the theater with the group. He really enjoyed his visit. Mark is at Yale University for Arthritis and Lupus disease.

We extend our get well wishes to Brothers Joe Juran and Roy Alholm.

They had surgery.

The convention is at our door step.

Everyone is busy getting ready.

Members who celebrated birthdays in April and May were congratulated. They were Emil Matula, Lucille Dlugosh, Julia Sefcik, Mildred Strobel and George Schultz.

Lodge No. 133, San Antonio SPJST Lodge 133 San Antonio held its monthly meeting on May 16, 1988 at the St. Margaret Mary Activity Center, 1314 Fair Avenue. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was held for all deceased members. Roll call of officers showed all present. The minutes were read and corrected.

A letter from Pauline Bayer from Lodge 107 Floresville was read in regards to a Fraternal Recreation Center. Lucille Dlugosh then gave the entertainment report.

The anniversary chairman reported that Margaret and Roy Schauffele were celebrating their third anniversary and Tom and Deborah Rue, their tenth.

Julie Kurtz, Mrs. Jerry Sliva and Mr. and Mrs. Jaroslav Kleprlik were on the sick list.

President Trilicek asked the members to look at the trophy that was won by Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Schmicek at the "42" Domino Tournament.

They did a superb job of representing Lodge 133 at the tournament and we thank them.

Youth Leader Frankie Campbell told members that District VII would be enjoying the H.E.B. Camp facilities on July 3, 4, 5 and 6. She invited any members who would like to participate to call her at 680 - 4661. The District VII youth will have their summer camp at Camp Val Verde during the last week of July.

The secretary reported that our lodge had eight 50 - year members.

Each person had been contacted and asked to attend the meeting. None of them was able to so the pins were put into the mail. Fifty-year members

included Julius Barborak, Jerome Dusek, Lucille Hill, Joe Holub, Ida Kilday, Elizabeth Kitowski, Dr. Leon Kopecky and Idonia Lieberman.

It was motioned by Brother Bill Mares and seconded by Sister Miroslava Phelps that the next meeting be canceled since this is Father's Day and the week of the SPJST convention in Temple.

Split - the - Pot was won by Henrietta Kalmus and Mary Popp.

Door prizes were. won by: 1st - Viola Kurtz, 2nd - Lucille Dlugosh, 3rd Mary Popp. With no further business to discuss,the meeting was adjourned.

Lodge No. 154 Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: A large group of our lodge members arrived home safely last night after a wonderful weekend at Sokol Zizka, Dallas, who hosted the Southern District Slet.

Quite a few of our young lodge members won trophies and congratulations to Sister Mary Jean Stoeppelman who was the choreographer of the Junior/Senior Circus Time special number that won first place.

We congratulate all the participants for a job well done.

While there, we learned Brother Joe Pokladnik suffered a stroke, he is now home recuperating and getting better.

He was missed.

Also, Sister Alice Petrzelka of Houston received a call at 3:30 a.m.

Saturday that her sister perished in a fire in her home. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family.

Our president called the meeting to order at 8:30 p.m.

Secretary Ricky Weyland was unable to attend.

Financial report was given by Arnold Peters, followed by Treasurer Lee Leonhardt's report.

There was no old business or new business.

Food Committee advised us that for our next meeting, we will have sandwiches and members may bring a covered dish or dessert.

The June 2, 1988 meeting of Lodge 185 was called to order by President Dwight Doeppenschmidt at the Bavarian Village at 8:15 p.m. Brett Doeppenschmidt led our group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers showed Second Vice President Charlie Watt absent.

Minutes of the March meeting were approved after a minor correction.

Treasurer Ernest Jasek reported a balance of $1,050.08 after all bills were paid.

All correspondence was read.

Youth Leader Betty Doeppenschmidt reported the District VII YAD would be held at Floresville on Juy 24th, Youth Camp will be held July 31st to August 3rd and State YAD will be held August 21st.

Old Business -- We were selling food at the Bavarian Polka Fest on June 12th. The youth sold peanut brittle.

Our picnic will be held July 21st at Preiss Heights Park. The lodge will furnish hamburgers and drinks and each family is asked to bring chips and dips or sweets.

President Doeppenschmidt reported we had lockers upstairs at the Bavarian Village for our supplies which were previously stored at the Eagles Hall.

Ernest Jasek reported on the District VII fall meeting to be held in Corpus Christi; date will be announced later.

The name of Melvin Golla was drawn for the attendance prize; since he was not present, the prize for July will be $20.

ST— Birthday Club Of Lodge 88

On June 8, 1988 the Birthday Club Sisters met in the lodge dining room at 11:15 a.tn. for their monthly meeting and luncheon.

Karl Lindemann, a board member, demonstrated on , how to use the oxygen tank whenever an emergency arises. That is until the paramedics can get there and take over. We thank Karl for his time and interest.

President Kathy Trefell called the roll. We had a very good attendance in spite of the hot weather.

Secretary Rosalee Kostom read the minutes of our previous meeting, which were approved as read.

Treasurer Lillie Spies wasn't feeling too well and didn't attend. A motion was made by Lillian Finn to dispense with the financial report until July.

Martha Baxter gave the "drawing" report. She and Ardith McClellan thanked all the ladies who helped Sunday, June 5th.

The Birthday Club drawing turned out to be profitable. We gave away 7 gifts as follows: $100 won by Harry Finn (no wonder he was in the singing mood); A beautiful handmade afghan (donated by Estelle Kelly) was won by V.C. Our Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut reported all the cards she sent to our Sisters and she also thanked the ladies who took care of her job while she was ill in the hospital. Evelyn Mikolas did most of her work.

Sister Annie Baethe, who will be 99 years old in July, is so happy about her new great - grandson, Samuel Michael Craven, born in Dallas on May 14, 1988. His parents are Gary and Jean Craven and grandparents are Gladys and Bill Craven. Gary is a Lodge 88 member. Congratulations, Mrs. Baethe and family!

Lillie Spies' daughter, Aggie, and son - in - law, Joe Foster, who live in London, surprised Lillie immensely, when they visited for a few days all of a sudden.

On Channel 2 during 5 p.m. news, a big surprise, when Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dvorak were flashed on the screen on their 67th wedding anniversary.

Brother Frank is Frances Olexa's brother. They are beautiful people and Brother Frank is a talented artist. He took a postcard - size picture, which my grandson, took of my home in the country where my sister, Talita, and I grew up, and enlarged it to a 3x21/2 foot picture, which is so real that everyday I visualize my whole family as we lived there. Happy Anniversary! __ Mary Schenburn surprised all of us today when she came back to the club meeting. It's been months since she had her back surgery and she's slowly improving and hopes to get released

Our dear devoted member, Della Kadlecek; is back in the hospital for treatments. Della is a "fighter," so we are expecting her back soon.

President Kathy announced under new business that on July 6, we will have a covered dish with fried chicken furnished, and the vegetables, salads and dessert will be furnished by our Birthday Club members. The ladies who will furnish pastry are Lillian Finn, Bessie Lero, Willie Mae Stang, Lillie Spies, Gladys Pulley, Martha Baxter, Ardith McClellan and Pearl Hanka. On July 13, we will have sandwiches, salad and dessert. The dessert will be furnished by Pearl Hanka, Lillian Finn, Mary Johnson, Delores Condon and Lillie Johnson.

Evelyn Mikolas donated 5 pounds of sugar, cremora and a pound of coffee.

President Kathy thanked Tilly Bily for calling bingo for Ardith McClellan.

The prize donated by our president was won by Willie Mae Stang. The Calcutta Prize was split between Inez Jeane and Esther Holton.

Our birthday celebrities are Inez Jeanes, Esther Holton and Alma McNaspy. "Happy Birthday" was sung and then we adjourned with a prayer by Mary Kosut.

Dear Members: We met May 24th and at the business meeting decided that meetings and practices will be held once a month, always on the fourth Tuesday of the month. The next practice will be on Tuesday, June 28th at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was called to order by President Jo Prochaska and she led us to the Pledge of Alle giance and the members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for our member Camille Bolcer's husband, Edward, who passed away; and our condolences also went to Frank Tesar on the loss of his brother in Shiner.

May they rest in peace.

We had 36 members and guests Jack Edens, Larry Howery and Jewel Clark present. We always welcome our guests .

Our Secretary Merle Kovar read the minutes of our May meeting and Lydia Alholm, our treasurer report, and they were approved as read. Merle also read a thank you from Camille Bolcer and she expressed her thanks at the meeting for all the prayers and thoughtfulness to all for their kindness durin g the lengthy illness of her husband.

Anna Johnson, our Sunshine chairperson, reported on all the cards sent.

A $200 donation was made for the first 6 months for the facilities where our meetings are held.

Members made donations to present to Father Warren who will be leaving July 1st.

Lydia Alholm told us of her encounter with a big chicken snake; she didn't know what it was at the time. She managed to kill it and had a picture to prove it.

Geneva Hennessey attended her school reunion in Frederick, Oklahoma and really enjoyed it.

Josephine and Theodore Bugaj attended a 50th wedding anniversary in North Long Island, New York and reported a wonderful time.

Lydia Alholm organized the annual reunion of the old Pleasant Run ,School with friends and classmates from 30, 40 and 50 years ago. This was their 13th year for the reunion. They had a pot luck lunch and entertainment by the Arlington Swinging Seniors whose instruments were pots, pans and other things,and sang. Everyone had a wonderful time Saturday, June 11th.

It was voted to have our July 6th meeting at Van Zandt's Restaurant, 721 East Bailey Boswell Road; go out Boat Club Road, you will see the Wayside School on Bailey Boswell and turn right. If you wish you can meet at the St. Thomas Recreation Hall at 11 a.m. and follow the group.

It was also voted for our August 3rd meeting we will have a cold luncheon.

Our August hostesses will be Maria Prill, Lydia Alholm and Roberta Peters.

Our door prize winner was Merle Kovar.

"Happy Birthday" to Millie Bell, Bessie Prochaska and Bernadette Hoeford.

Dear Members: It is hard to believe that it is June already and time, again, for another SVPS meeting. This one will be held on June 26 at the National Hall, 3316 Roberts Cut Off Road at 2 p.m.

The officers and committees will give their reports of the business which has been transacted since the last meeting.

For those of you who would like to pay your assessments before the meeting, the secretary will be at the hall at 1 p.m.

After the meeting, as is customary, dinner will be served and the kind ladies are asked to bring pastries, please.

Don't forget, there will be three drawings of $25 each to members only.

One of you may be one of the lucky winners this time.

Sister Elizabeth Gre gory is recoverin g nicely from sur gery and so is Brother Roy Alholm who also had surgery. John Motl had a sli ght stroke last month and I have heard he is doing good after a short stay in the hospital.

On June 4, Joe Juran was rushed to the hospital for gall bladder surgery.

He is also doin g good presently. We

extend our get well wishes to all of them.

Miculka Reunion

The 35th annual Miculka reunion was held Sunday, June 5, 1988 at the American Legion Hall, Moulton, Texas.

Mrs. Charlotte Post registered 82 family members of the various branches of the Miculka family tree.

A group picture was taken by Mr. Henry Harper and Mr. Bill Nelson.

We look forward to next year, so that we can see this special tribute to the Miculka clan.

Each family brought a covered dish and a dessert which was enjoyed by one and all, after the blessing by Mr. Henry Harper.

Immediately after the meal the business meeting was held during which Mr. Paul Post and Mr. Jon Wahlberg entertained the children with games and prizes. Mr. Purvis Harper conducted the meeting beginning with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent reflection for those who had passed away since the last reunion.

The 1987 minutes were read by Secretary Charlotte Post and were approved as read.

Birthday honorees for the month of January were honored with a round of applause.

Oldest family members present were recognized: Eldest gentleman -- Raymond Miculka, age 84 Eldest lady present -- Agnes Ermis, age 84 Youngest child present -- Brian David Wahlberg, age 5 months, 3 weeks, youngest son of Cecilia and Jon Wahlberg of Houston.

Most family members present was the Agnes Ermis clan with 16 members present.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Harper, Bill Nelson, Vlasta Nelson, Magrus Nelson and Agnes Ermis traveled the furthest from Beaumont to attend the reunion.

Officers for 1988 - 89 are as follows: President - Clinton Pustejovsky, 1st Vice President - Victor Miculka, 2nd Vice President - James Miculka, Secretary - Charlotte A. Post and Treasurer - James Ermis.

A committee for children's games for the 1989 reunion was formed with Mrs. William Miculka, Lori Pustejovsky and Mr. Paul Post. A round of applause for Paul was given because he organized this year's games for the children.

Mr. Melvin Post of Houston gave an oral presentation on how the Pustejovsky clan is related to the Miculka family. He used a poster and handout sheets as aids in the presentation. Everyone enjoyed this very much. President Harper asked for a volunteer for a John Miculka presentation for the 1989 reunion.

Mrs. Viola Miculka Kurtz agreed to do this for the next reunion.

The old photo contest was a huge success headed by Purvis and Lynn Harper. Mrs. Vlasta Nelson was awarded a collage picture frame for guessing the most pictures, 20 out of 23. We will again have the photo contest for 1989 and hope that more pictures will be sent in. Purvis and Lynn Harper have agreed to be in charge of this contest, again, next year.

settlements in America, is celebrated on the Sunday that their church honors its patron saint. For example: the church in Bee, Nebraska, is dedicated to St. Wenceslas. Therefore, this typical Czech town has its Thanksgiving on the day of St. Wenceslas, or the Sunday before.

Thanksgiving is very much different in the Old Country than in America; it is celebrated in different ways and not only for one day. Every village in the Old Country celebrates Thanksgiving (posvieeni - hody) on different Sundays, during the autumn, a custom many centuries old.

It is interesting to note that Emperor Joseph II did try to simplify this situation and ordered Thanksgiving to be on one Sunday for all villages. He didn't meet with complete favor and Thanksgivng is still celebrated the same as in the past; on different dates.

He did meet with some success in respect to the old custom, in that he created a new form of unity in celebrating by establishing through his governmental order the creation of the so - called, "Imperial Thanksgiving" (eisarske posvieem), celebrated on one Sunday for all citizens in his Empire.

Usually, Thanksgiving in the Old Country and in many small Czech

In the old days, the villagers weren't satisfied with only one day of celebration, but, usually three days. It was a very large celebration. Prior to that day, women were busy preparing food, baking koldee and the men were busy butchering fresh pork and preparing the first wine of autumn.

The villages were all cleaned thoroughly, cottages repainted and all repairs were made.

This Sunday is set aside as a day for all villages and towns in the Old Country to remember the bounties of God with some observances of celebration.

District VII To H.E.B. Camp July 3 - 6, 1988 Summer is here and our thoughts are turning to camps. The first camp on our agenda is H.E.B. This year we will be at Comanche camp site. This camp has room for 60 people. The swimming area is on the camp site. It is a very spacious but rustic camp. There will be room for everyone who is interested in joining in this fraternal activity.

10/VESTNiK—Wednesday, June 22, 1988 The camp is free. We are required to provide a nurse, lifeguard and do one improvement project while we are at the camp. (I committed us to pull some weeds on the camp grounds.) We must also be covered by insurance. All these things have been provided so now all we need is for you to let me know that you will be going with us.

If you bring a child that is not your own, please have the parent fill out one of our regular camp application.

Things you will need to bring are bedding for a camp bunk, personal items, camp clothes, camp shoes, swim suit, towels, flashlight, fan extension cord, sun screen and first - aid items.

Please follow the menu below so we can cook together. Bring other items if you desire, but we will all eat together.

Enough for menu: 3 breakfast meals -- cereal, milk, juice, (bacon, and eggs if you prefer);

3 noon meals -- cold cuts, hot dogs and hamburgers; 3 evening meals -- chicken to fry or barbecue, ground meat for two meals.

Other items needed -- spaghetti, sauce, cheese, vegetables for salad, salad dressing, bread, chips, dips and cookies.

Bring some throw - away cups, plates, napkins; the camp has dishes, pots and pans.

Get your application in or call and let me know you will join, in and I will see you at Leakey. If you cannot be there the first day you can join us for one or two nights. If you have not been to the beautiful country near Leakey, treat yourself to one of God's most beautiful creations, "The Texas Hill Country."

From The Youth Leaders Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club Dear Members and Friends: The youth had their meeting June 3 after the mother lodge meeting with a fair attendance.

The youth gave each father a gift and boutonniere for Father's Day, also brought a cake for the lodge supper.

They all are working on their scrapbook, poster and their crafts for District YAD which will be held June 26 at Lodge 66 in Elm Mott. All the members and friends can come and see what our youth members are doing.

On June 1 cakes were donated to the West Rest Haven for their Birthday Party.

Letters From The Youth District V Youth Club Outing On Saturday, June 4, 1988 District V youth and parents went to Galveston to ride on the Colonel, which is a big paddle boat that goes down the channel. After the boat ride, we walked down the Strand. We saw many different shops. Then we went to eat at a seafood restaurant. This was enjoyed by everyone.

We returned to the lodge at 5 p.m.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: On Sunday, June 5 members and guests of Lodge 88, Houston, joined together for our annual "Homecoming with a Splash." It all started at 10 a.m. when we began to set SEX. up the booths, tables, etc. There was plenty of delicious barbecue for all to SEX. eat and lots of games for all to play.

The Lodge 88 Youth Club sponsored two booths this year. We had yummy snowcones and face - painting. We made approximatley $70. Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Youth Club of Lodge 88, Houston held their June meeting on Thursday, June 9th. It was called to order at 7:15 p.m. by President Darlene Migl. Kevin Faske, sergeant at - arms, led us in the pledge. We remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for the good of our members.

Secretary Michelle Linney read the roll call of officers. All officers were present. She then read the register.

There were 14 members present, along with 2 adults. The secretary also read the minutes of our May meeting. They were approved as corrected. We received no correspondence.

Treasurer Marlene Migl gave the treasury report. We made $71.90 at our face - painting and snowcones booths on June 5 at Lodge 88's annual Homecoming with a Splash Day celebration. Marlene also gave the dues' report; 17 of our members have paid their dues. She said if your dues are not paid before camp (June 27 30), you will not be allowed to go to camp.

We then asked about any unfinished business from the last meeting.

Members were asked to sign up for

Wednesday, June 22, 1988—VESTNiK/11 their chosen committees. They were asked to get together with the committee chairperson of their committee as soon as possible.

We also discussed new business. It was suggested that we change the date of our regular meeting. Everyone finally agreed that the meeting will be on the first Tuesday of every month.

This means that the July meeting will be on Tuesday, July 5, at 7:30 p.m. We also decided to change the schedule of our bake sales. We will be having two bake sales every month. We mentioned that this will not mean that one will have to bring something to the lodge every time, but that one may bring something up one time, and work the next; the dates of our bake sales will be on the second and third Thursdays of every month during Bingo beginning at 7 p.m.

We also discussed our June social. It was finally agreed upon that our social will be a trip to Malibu (formerly called "Castle" Golf and Games on Saturday, June 11th. Our plans included that we meet up at Malibu Golf at 11 a.m. and we will leave at about 2 p.m. It was suggested that if we do not want to play putt - putt golf, that we would receive the amount that it costs to play golf so that we could play bumper - boats or the games at Malibu; all agreed on this.

John was a student at North Elementary School and was with the Little League Baseball Pirates Team.

Roberta Pratt of Abilene, Texas served as matron of honor. The bridesmaids were Susan Harding of Great Falls, Montana and Susan Weiser of Chicago, Illinois. Flower girl was Casey Bancraft of Bozeman, Montana.
