Barbara Sebek Celebrates Her 96th Birthday S -:ter Barbara Sebek celebrated her 96th birthday on L',ecember 24, 1987.

She was honored with a special birthday cake. Those attending were her six children and their families. Due

to her health, Mrs. Sebek now resides in a nursing home. She is a longtime member of SPJST Lodge No. 142 in Houston, Texas.

Barbara Sebek was born in Domazlice, Czechoslovakia on December 24, 1891. She was one of two children born to Marie and Georgr Kugl. Her sister, Marie Sperl (age 95') presently lives in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. The family came to the United States when Barbara was 19 years of age. While employed for Mrs. C. Hrdlicka, a school teacher, Barbara met Albert Sebek, Sr. They were married on September 30, 1914 in Omaha, Nebraska; from there they moved to Lyra, Texas and later moved to Caldwell, Texas where they operated a bakery for five years. In 1921 Barbara and Albert Sebek moved to Fairbanks, Texas where they worked in a dairy. Albert Sebek passed away in 1962.

SPJST Issues New Rate Book After many months of research, planning, and hard work, the first phase of the new SPJST rate book is being issued to our sales representatives.

The book has been designed to be easy to read and understand, and it

consolidates all current information regarding our insurance program into one binder.

A project of this magnitude is no easy task. I want to publicly thank all those who participated in this project for their input in developing the book and the team effort that was displayed in getting it put together and finally distributed to our sales representatives.

convention, we visited and, when he learned what we were paid as delegates to attend the convention, he looked at yours truly, smiled and said: "Son, your've heard about the very good, productive milk cow that went dry because it was milked too often and too much. Our SPJST is very productive, now. Your generation and future generations will have to be careful not to milk it too much and make sure that it does not go 'dry' for the membership."

Our solvency has dropped some by now; which is revealed in the reports of our officers and it will drop even more after the cost of the convention is applied to our overall expenses

Sunglasses shoppers should consider eyesight as well as fashion. Effective sunglasses screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible sunlight and protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can lead to cataracts and retinal damage. Glasses should be dark enough so that when you look in a mirror you can't see your eyes clearly.

Choosing shades that screen out UV rays is tricky, even though the Sunglasses Association of America, a manufacturers' group, has initiated voluntary labeling of glasses with UV protection levels. Special purpose glasses absorb up to 99 percent of one kind of UV rays, but may offer far less protection against a second damaging type. It may be worth the effort to buy sunglasses from an optician -- who can measure UV - absorption levels -- and to ask specifically about UV protection. At the very least, buy glasses that claim the maximum protection -- some level of UV screening is better than none.

Sunglasses without UV protection can do more harm than good by prompting the eye to dilate and let in more UV rays. Shades should be free from distortion. To check, hold the lenses at arm's length and look through them at a distant line, then move them to make sure the line doesn't curve.

I also want to thank Leonard Mikeska and our Investment Department for allowing us to pay such favorable yields on our interest sensitive products. Jerry Mikulas and his department are to be commended also for processing many of our members' certificates to direct bank draft thereby allowing automatic payment of their insurance premiums and timely payment of our sales

representatives' commissions. John Agee, our consulting actuary, also served the SPJST well in this endeavor.

Once again, I want to thank all those responsible in making this project a success. This will be a vital tool for future successes of our all volunteer sales force.

SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple held their regular meeting Friday evening, May 13th at 7 p.m. with President Ladis Navratil presiding.

The meeting was called to order; Lad Zatopek led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Silent tribute was paid to deceased members.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved as read.

Correspondence was read and discussed.

Also, old and new business was discussed and voted on.

Additional insurance was sold to member Benedict Mescke.

Ladis and Georgia Navratil were hosts for the social hour of this meeting.

Millie Schiller was a guest.

Dear Members: June 19th will be here before you know it, and our delegate said he wonders how the members feel about some of the proposed changes we read in the Vestnik.

If any of you have ideas, desires or whatever, it would be proper, to come to our next quarterly meeting and discuss the problem. It might help our delegate to know how to vote on the various proposals.

I'm so grateful to our members who take time out to send me some news because I don't like to write news which may not be exactly up to par.

It was in March when Arnold and Naomi Spencer took a trip to Kolin, Louisiana where the Czechs were celebrating their annual Fest. They were amazed at the energetic efforts put out in this small active village. For food, there were kolache, sausage, cakes and dumplings (knedliky) with sauerkraut. There was music and dancing performed by Beseda groups of young people and also, groups of adults.

Naomi said she's known Arnold for many years, but it was a big surprise to both that Czechs lived in Louisiana.

The following month they decided to drive to Nogales, Arizona, to visit with Namoi's sister - in - law. This was a trip of about 1200 miles. Naomi said years ago they would meet at a family ranch with relatives who lived in El Paso and Arizona, so, instead of driving, they would take the Sunset Limited and enjoyed the comforts of the pullman cars and lovely dining cars. Now, the family is scattered and trips out West are less frequent, but still quite enjoyable. She said the desert country holds a great deal of charm, not only the sight of the vast prairies, but mountains in various formations and heights; quite a difference from the flat lands of Harris County and Houston.

In addition Arnold found a great deal of interest in being reminded of his training in World War II, when he was shipped to the Death Valley in California. They enjoyed their visit in Nogales for a few days, but glad to get back home.

Ann and Gus Urbanovsky took a 4 day trip to Kingsland several weeks ago. They visited with Gus's baby sister; Helen and husband L.D. Cook.

Ann said it was a delightful trip; the scenery was simply beautiful.

People's Republic of China. En route to Zhongshan, China, it was interesting to see farming done with water buffalo and the primitive methods used in construction. They saw many Peking duck farms and spent time in a Chinese Commune and an op en market where the Chinese do their shopping. Bob Bayer Brother and Sister Members and Delegates of District VII to the SPJST XXV Convention: 1 hereby announce my candidacy for Supreme Lodge director from District VII to be elected at the XXV Convention to be held in Temple, Texas starting June 19, 1988.

I have been a member of the SPJST for 22 years and served as District VII president 2 different times for a total of 6 years. I served many years as Master of Ceremonies of District VII YAD, was Master of Ceremonies for State Royalty in 1986, served 10 years on the Board of Directors of Longhorn Recreation Lab (LRL) representing the SPJST, was District VII director from 1977 through 1980. During this term, I was instrumental in getting Lodge 79 their new lodge hall in Corpus Christi, Texas and a new lodge No 185 in New Braunfels, Texas.

I am president of Lodge No 107 in Floresville, Texas an office which I have held for the past 19 years.

If elected, I will work for the betterment of District VII and our Society. I will push for the SPJST Recreation Park. I will be a visiting director, not wait for an invite, I will not be a "yes" man for any one I do not wish to hold a higher office in the SPJST, I just want to be your new District VII director, again.

Our annual Benefit Dance held Saturday night, May 21 is history; we had a nice turnout; it was a real good and fun dance; only our income wasn't what it could have been since this was a fund - raising effort. We did make some money, enough to get us through the season. After 35 years, this may be our last season, unless some miracle or something unforeseen happens. Things are changing so rapidly that one never knows. I will say all 35 years were a reality and a lot of fun, pleasure, good fellowship, friendship, hard work, worries, etc., but I'm still proud that Ben David and myself had an idea and we, with lots of help, made it a reality.

Just to reminisce one thing, our first uniforms were baggy flannel suits -purchased from Sears, and the lettering on all 18 uniforms was pressed on with a hot iron -- SPJST Lodge 84 on the front and back of 18 shirts plus our sponsors' addresses and phone numbers. We, Ben and I, and our wives Mildred and Lillie worked until 2:30 a.m., we started Sunday afternoon. Now, that was work, but there are many, many fond memories and friendships that will never be forgotten.

Back to the dance, we wish to thank our mother lodge for the use of the hall and kitchen facilities for those wonderful people who donated gifts for our drawing; those who came to the dance and those who participated at our dance; to the wives who worked the kitchen; the guys who worked the door and to all our team sponsors for our 1988 season. We thank you with all our hearts. We just hope you all had fun, it was a wonderful dance. Oh, yes, thanks to the Czech Harvesters Orchestra. I hope I haven't overlooked anyone; if I have, we also thank you.

The senior citizen social held at St. Michael's Catholic Church was attended and enjoyed by Gladys Hix, Helen Valcik, Emma S. Tielke and Hilda Clark.

Every Monday morning, Elverna Graeber, Olie Eixman, Nona Eixman, Ella Eisman, Joy Hurta and Merylyn Leus come to have sing - a - long. The residents greatly appreciate singing.

Every Tuesday morning, Kitty Smith from Wallis comes to have Bible study with the residents. In the afternoon, Frances Muzny, Lydia Hortmon, Margaret Jones, Ida Gasch and Jean Jacobsen come to play Bingo with our residents.

The Damon ladies, Catholic ladies, Presbyterian ladies Sunshine ladies come on Thursday afternoons to have crafts with the residents. Elton and Faye Tielke also come to have sing - a long every Thursday afternoon.

Everyone enjoys crafts and old - time songs.

Every Friday morning, Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar come to have rosary with our residents. In the afternoon, Freda Klawitter, Lydia Hortmon and Melva Hastings come to roll hair for the residents. They greatly appreciate this Monday afternoons, May 2 and 16, Betty Seiler came from the library to show movies. The residents enjoyed movies and popcorn.

KCs also came to play Bingo Tuesday evenings, May 10 and 24 with the residents.

Nursing Home Week started May 8 with Mother's Day and ended May 14th. Monday morning, May 9 the residents released balloons with their names and addresses in them. Rev. Jensen and Hope Lutheran Church women from Beasley came during the afternoon to have services and brought cookies for a social afterwards. They also brought prizes for Bingo.

Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

Wednesday afternoon, May 11 was Recognition of Volunteers. Rev. Andy Blair was a guest speaker.

Administrator Harvey Marx also spoke a few words to the volunteers and handed out certificates and recognized the volunteers for appreciation for their services during the year. Sandwiches, chips, vegetable dish, dips, egg salad tray, celery and cheese tray, fruit plate, cake, cookies, pies, strudel, punch and coffee were served. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon. Thursday morning, May 12 Special Place Day Care children same to sing to the residents. Friday, May 13 was open house all day with special guests at noon, namely, Mayor John Stern and Police Sergeant Holub.

Mayor Stern was our guest speaker and the day was enjoyed by all.

Thursday afternoon, May 19 Garland Hurtye and Mary Ann Goffinet with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for the residents' therapy.

Monday afternoon, May 23 residents Gladys Hix, Edmund Brandl, Hilda Clark, Helen Valcik, James Little and Martha Marx (S.A.D.) wen'. riding to Boling and Wharton.

Everyone enjoyed the trip.

,tor * * * * * * * * ** * * * * * * * * The Lodge 30 Taiton Youth Club has been organized for 12 years. The club meets the first Sunday of each month at the Taiton Community Center. Youth Club members enjoy working on craft, going camping and performing at different functions.

Highlights for the youth year are the annual Easter and Christmas Parties, honoring graduates in May and an outing in August.

The Youth Club has been under the leadership of Georgia Dorotik for 12 years. Georgia and her husband, Jerome, have 11 children, all of whom are SPJST members, and 12

grandchildren. Georgia enjoys doing crafts, playing domino games, traveling and gardening. She is active in the St. John's Altar Society, KJZT Taiton Community Center, Farmers Mutual Protective Association and is the financial secretary for SPJST Lodge 30. Assistant to Georgia is Karen Kaspar. Karen grew up as an SPJST Youth Club member.

The Society is most fortunate in having dedicated individuals such as Georgia and Karen who are willing to give of their time and efforts for our youth. Thank you, ladies, for all you do!

Special Category Contest For State YAD Dear Youth Leaders and Parents: The "SPECIAL CATEGORY" for State YAD this year is PHOTOGRAPHY. All the youth are encouraged to compete in this category. Dear Parents and Youth Campers: It will soon be time to attend SPJST Youth Camp. I'd like to take this opportunity to acquaint you with the Guidelines for Campers. *** GUIDELINES FOR CAMPERS 1. Effective January, 1984 the ages for camp will be 6 through age 16.

2. All campers will participate in all scheduled activities.

3. If you have to be late for a scheduled activity or cannot attend for some valid reason, it must be reported to the adult leader in charge.

4. (a) If you arrive in an automobile and it is to stay at camp until you leave, you will be permitted to unload your belongings, park it and not drive it during your stay at camp, except to leave in case of dire necessity or emergency. Upon arrival in your car, the key(s) to your car will be left with the DYC, who will give them to you in case of need or at your time of departure. The principal mode of getting around at camp is your feet; cars will not be used to transport persons from one location to another.

When driving onto and from the camp premises, the speed is 15 mph and will be strictly observed. Anyone driving in excess of this limit is endangering the lives of others. (b) Transporting campers to any activity site will be done by an adult.

NO CAMPERS; or LITs will be allowed to transport campers.

5. Except in case of an emergency, you will not be allowed to leave the camp grounds.

6. Lights OUT will be strictly observed -- QUIET! 7. No boys visiting in girls' quarters and vice - versa. No campers are to be in the staff cabins at any . time and the staff is not permitted to be in campers' cabins.

8. No discourteous acts toward anyone.

9. No hazing (pranks - harmless or otherwise) of fellow campers.

10. No throwing anyone into the swimming pool.

11. No abusing camp property or equipment. Any damage done while your group is at camp will be charged against your district's allocation and that means less money for your district and you as a camper. In addition, if you are caught, your parents will be called to come pick you up immediately. Vandalism of any sort will not be tolerated.

12. Each camper will keep everything orderly around his own bunk.

13. Good sportmanship and conduct will be observed at all times.

14. Alcoholic beverages will not be tolerated anywhere at any time by. anybody.

15. All camp areas will be cleaned before leaving camp. Campers will be expected to pick up all litter on the grounds and inside cabins where they stayed.

16. Necessary personal phone calls by campers will be made on a collect basis only. In the event this is not done, the camper will be charged later after the billing comes through.

You can show your appreciation of camp by observing all rules and accepted norms of behavior. Whatever you do will reflect on you first of all, on your family second, and on your lodge and district, and ultimately, the whole SPJST. Think about it. Enjoy yourself and have a good camp.

The annual May Fete of SPJST Lodge No. 29, Taylor was celebrated on Sunday, May 1, 1988.

Tammy Blahuta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Blahuta is the 1988 May Queen. The king is Kelly Kaderka, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Kaderka. The May Princess is June Simcik, and May Prince is Dean Shirocky.

I would like to thank everyone who made the day a great success especially those who helped with the meal, the kids who participated in the May Fete, and the mothers who helped at the practices and with decorating the hall.

Thanks, most of all, to Tammy Blahuta for being our May Queen. She has been an active member of our Youth Club for the past 6 years. She has held the office of treasurer, worked with several committees and attended YAD and SPJST Camp; this summer she will be a Leader - in training (LIT) at camp.

Dear Members, The youth club met on May 15, 1988. There were 13 members and 4 adults present.

The new officers were sworn in by mother lodge Vice President Mary Alice Langlotz. Congratulations to all new officers.

The youth then honored their mothers with a long stem carnation.

We also honored Libbie Parma, who was our youth leader for many years.

We made Begonia flower pots and carried them to the Bellmead Nursing Home for the mothers on May 7th. We had some pots left over and used them for door prizes at the lodge meeting.

Our youth club thanks Bonnie at Bonnie's Greenhouse for donating the Begonias.

All youth were reminded of District YAD. We are all looking forward to this event; it will be held at Lodge 66 on June 26, 1988.

Door prize winners were Justin Engelke and Candace Pavlicek. The birthday cake was brought by Denise Kofnovec.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 92, in Fort Worth, Texas, wish to express heartfelt sympathy on behalf of our entire membership to the family of LOUIS BENEDICT BONELLI, of Fort Worth, Texas, who passed away at his home on April 21, 1988 at the age of 94 after a long illness.

Brother Bonelli was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He attended Bishop's College School in Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada from where he graduated. He later attended and graduated from Mississippi University, after which he joined the Army and fought in the Battle of the Argonne in France.

On January 2, 1920 he arrived in Fort Worth shortly after World War 1. That same year he purchased an insurance company which he operated in the Burk Burnett Building until

October 1, 1977, when he retired. He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, for which he served about 10 years as secretary and treasurer. He was a member of Moslah Shrine Temple, also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 92.

The membership of Lodge Volna Cechie No. 135, Ennis, wishes to express its deep sorrow in the death of sister BESSIE BROZEK, who passed away at her home in Dallas on April 28, 1988, at the age of 98.

Sister Brozek was born May 10, 1889 in Czechoslovakia to Frank and Ann Janosek Petr. In 1892 she came to the United States with her parents and settled in the Ennis area where her family was engaged in farming. On August 20, 1911, she was married to Anton Brozek of the Creechville community. They lived in that community until 1958 when they moved to Dallas. Brother Brozek preceded her in death in 1962.

Funeral services were held on May 1 at the Keever Chapel in Ennis with the Rev. Gordon Hejl officiating.

Interment was in the Crisp Cemetery with pallbearers Leonard Patak, Wesley Osborne, Matt Payne, Dale Mull, Mike Osborne and Jason Patak.

Sister Brozek is survived by two sons, Miro Brozek of Dallas and Emil Brozek of Dallas; one daughter, Georgia Brozek of Dallas; one sister, Mary Nesuda of Dallas; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and one son - in - law, Stanley Patak of Dallas.

One son, Charlie Brozek and one daughter, Mildred Patak, also preceded her in death.

Brother Kelner was born February 22, 1910 in Fort Bend County to Anton and Alouise (Jancak) Kelner, Sr. He passed away May 9, 1988 at his home.

He was financial secretary/treasurer of SPJST Lodge 28; District VI treasurer over 30 years; also over 40 years in the same office for SVPS; was president of National Cemetery of East Bernard and served on

Resolution Committee of Lodge 28 for many years.

Brother Kelner was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie (Michulka) Kelner; one son, Jessie James Kelner; parents, two brothers and one sister.

Survivors include 5 sons, Anton Joe, Donnie Lee, Tommy Charles, Joseph Wayne and John Robert Kelner; 8 daughters, Betty Ann (Kelner) Kiefert, Mary Jane Kelner, Rosemarie (Kelner) Schroeder, Christine Ann Kelner, Margaret Martha Kelner, Dianne Lynn (Kelner) Nettles, Theresa (Kelner) Petrosky, Josephine (Kelner) Pitman; 19 grandchildren, 1 great - grandchild; one sister, Louise Hannamon of Corpus Christi.

She retired in 1984.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Lodge 154 and a former Sokol gymnast, and attended Schpansky School of Art in Fort Worth.

Funeral services were held at Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Monday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Fred Allen officiating. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Lead pallbearer was John Melton.

Pallbearers were Darren Cole, Edward Garcia, Mickey Van Natta, Ray Van Natta, Greg Walkenharst and Larry Williams.

On behalf of the entire membership of Lodge No. 35, Elk, we express our condolences to the family of our departed lodge brother RUDOLF J. VICHA, JR., age 74, an Axtell farmer, who died Thursday afternoon, May 26, 1988, at a local hospital.

Services were held Saturday, May 28 at 11:30 a.m. at Wilkerson - Hatch Funeral Home Chapel in Waco. The Rev. Walter Albers officiated with burial in the SPJST Pavelka Cemetery near Elk. Mr. Vicha was born April 20, 1914 near the Cottonwood and Penelope communities. He attended schools in Elk and farmed near Elk and Axtell all his life. He retired in 1977 from General Tire and Rubber Company where he had worked for 26 years.

Mr. Vicha married Lydia Adamek on January 5, 1937; she died on December 19, 1981. He married Libby Beesley on January 12, 1985.

Before he retired, Mr. Vicha was very active in the SPJST and donated many hours of work to the lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Libby Vicha; three daughters, Mrs. Jerome (Janie) Lehrmann and Mrs. Erwin (Peggy) Dieterich, both of Axtell and Mrs. Diana Hand of Bellmead; one son, Jerry W. Sophie Dybala Publication Committee Member Sophie Dybala of Ganado represents District VI. Sophie, married to Ed. A. Dybala nearly 50 years, has one daughter and five sons; also 15 grandchildren (8 girls and 7 boys), and 2 great grandchildren.

Having high school education, Sophie holds her membership of long standing at Lodge Vytrvalost No. 138 in Ganado. Within her 48 years, she has been serving secretary and treasurer for approximately 20 years.

Attending her first SPJST Convention was in 1968 and in 1972 Sophie was, again, elected delegate and, at this convention, she was elected to represent District VI on the Publication Committee which she has served efficiently since the 7 - member Publication Committee was authorized by the SPJST Convention.

Prior to their residency, Sophie and her husband enjoyed 30 years of farming before moving to town where her husband accepted a lighter occupation.

In addition to her SPJST activities, Sophie enjoys being a housewife and seamstress. In other organizational membership, records indicate Sophie is a 30 - year member of the Catholic Daughters of America where she was selected twice as "CDA of the Year."

She is also a member of The Assumption Catholic Church.

Publication Committee Member Emil E. Matula represents District VII and is a member of Lodge No. 133 in San Antonio, Texas.

Born in the City of West, Texas on April 4, 1918, he was raised on the farm at Granger, Texas. He attended Denson Country School, St. Cyril and Methodius and Granger Public Schools.

Emil enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1937 serving 3 years with the 9th Infantry at Fort Sam Houston and 5 years and 8 months with the 35th Infantry of the 25th Infantry Division from 1940 to August 1945, held the rank of first sergeant from April 26, 1942 to March 1, 1945 and received a Battlefield Commission and also led a Rifle Platoon in Combat on Luzon P.I. from March 1, 1945 to August 1, 1945. Also fought with the 35th Infantry Regiment at Pearl Harbor, Quadalcanal, Vella Lavella, New Georgia and Luzon, P.I. Emil was involved in four invasions, received the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart with Cluster for wounds and Bronze Star with Cluster for leadership and bravery.

Emil married Evelyn A. Motloch from Granger and they were blessed with six children, four girls and two boys. The second oldest died at age 12 and the youngest died in infancy; they also have eight grandchildren and the family is 100 percent SPJST. He was employed by the Jewel Tea Company from 1949 to 1981. His wife, Evelyn, retired from Frito Lay Company after 22 years of employment.

Emil served as vice president of Lodge No. 133 for two years, secretary for three years, president for thirteen years, chaired the 1980 SPJST Quadrennial Convention Committee, served as delegate to the 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984 Conventions, served as District VII second vice president, District VII treasurer, District VII president and is presently serving on the Publication Committee since 1976.

Emil represented Jewel Tea Company in sales and customer service in Williamson County 1949 to 1955 and Bexar County 1956 to 1981.

Emil is a life member of Pearl Harbor Survivors, Guadalcanal Survivors, Purple Heart L.ssociation, 25th infantry Division Association, Battlefield of Order National ssociation., Commissioned Officers' VFW, KJT, SMFIA, treasurer Neighborhood Watch, president of the Highland Hills Neighborhood Association, and a member of Holy Name Parish.

Pauline Bayer Insurance Committee Member Pauline (Pavliska) Bayer represents District VII. Pauline, daughter of Joe and Pauline Pavliska of Lodge No. 107, is the wife of Robert (Bob) Bayer, former District VII director (1976 1980). They are the parents of three married children; one son, John Bayer and daughter - in - law, April; two daughters, Roxanne Bertrand and son - in - law, Larry; Wendy Pruski and son - in - law, Glen. They also have one grandson Kevin Bayer. All of them are members of Lodge 107.

Polly (a name better known to her associates) graduated from Floresville High School. She proceeded her education by taking courses at San Antonio College in Floral Design and Business Administration.

For 18 years, Polly has been enrolled at Lodge 107 where her records reflect leading an active role from 1970 through 1987 as local youth leader; she served as committee chairman for the Peanut Festival in Floresville, manned the local lodge booth from 1975 through 1987. Polly also is District VII Assistant Youth Counselor since 1975.

Pauline has been attending SPJST Conventions since 1972 and, during this period, she was elected to serve on the Insurance Committee on which she presently serves. In 1984, she also served as a delegate.

Leading a very active life, Pauline is the owner of Floresville Flower Shop, an art she dearly enjoys. She is a productive SPJST Sales Representative and she was recognized for her several achievements.

In addition to her membership status, Pauline is a chairperson of the Floresville Downtown Association; a past director of Floresville Chamber of Commerce, and serves on the CCD Board of Directors at Sacred Heart Church.

The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its next meeting at the American Legion Hall in Crosby, Texas on Sunday, June 12, 1988. The American Legion Hall is located on FM2100 across the street from Wal - Mart in -Crosby.

Activities will begin around 1 p.m. with an informal fellowship hour.

Members and guests are encouraged to bring and display items which may be of interest to the group.

A brief business meeting will start at 2 p.m. followed by a program under the direction of Mrs. Marjorie Baumbach of Crosby. The program will emphasize the history of the Crosby - Highlands area, focusing upon the settlement of Czechs in the community. Alvin Community College Conversational Czech Class The Conversational Czech Class at Alvin Community College completed its spring semester with a covered dish social and special music by Karel Matejka. Bernard Pivonka, the Czech instructor, presented the students with diplomas. Those receiving diplomas were Clifford Malek, Faye Wilson, Annie Chovanec, Georgia Peluh, Carolyn Surface and Willie Mae Little.

Guests present for the occasion were J.J. Little, Elton Vyvial, Lee Surface and Brent Laswell. Special guests were Bill and Alice Souchek of Houston.

Perfective and imperfective verbs, prefixes.

In lesson 13 we hit upon the problem of perfective and imperfective verbs.

Let's summarize: a) the imperfective verbs emphasize the course of the verbal action or its repetition, b) the perfective verbs present the action as a completed fact, emphasizing the result, consequence or product.

In form the perfective verbs differ from their imperfective counterparts a) by an altered stem: kupovat— koupit, clavat-- dat, hazet— hodit, or by a completely different stem: brat— vzit, or b) by taking a prefix: uefm senauefm se, vafim — uvatim, opakuju— zopakuju, which is most frequent.

There are twenty prefixes in Czech and each of them carries an adverbial meaning that is added to the meaning of the original imperfective verb.

Usually one of the prefixes has no other meaning but the perfective function (psat— napsat), but it differs from verb to verb.

There is a variety of adverbial meanings for every prefix. We shall start with a survey of elementary locci meanings of some prefixes that can oe clearly visualized if combined with the verbs of motion like jdu, jedu, balm, letfm, plavu, nesu, vezu and also psdt etc. pH- motion to some place, close to something or somebody: Pfines1 knihu. -- He brought a book. Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
