'Editor' COMMENTS

We are glad that we were able to print all officers', directors' and committees' reports in the May 18th issue so that they are all in one Vestnik, and feel sure our members are able to follow the proposed SPJST By - law Changes. You will note that the SPJST By - law Committee has correctly moved Article 107 to Article 1 as a subsection where it correctly belongs. It is in column 4 of page 3, in the May 18th issue.

The reason we mention this is, that at first glance, it may appear to be a part of Article 4, however, remember that the change to Article 1 begins on Column 2 and continues to column 4 and ends with these words: "This constitution and by - laws bind all members and beneficiaries of members." before Article 4 begins.

After all, why have a constitution and by - laws if they are to be disregarded and not adhered to?

Our members are urged to study all the reports carefully; they all are important and contain much information. Remember that the By law Committee has a very important job and much tedious, time consuming work to read and re arrange the proposed changes which we will be governed by the next four years. Their committee and work are most important!

Article 95[d] states: 'In the month of May, the "Vestnik" shall publish the names and addresses of the district and local lodge secretaries'. We have received the roster from SL Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and had to delay it last week; we are printing it in this issue on pages 8 and 9. You may wish to keep it for future reference. We will do our best to get all delayed letters, etc. in this week's issue. *** Many of you will probably remember that we printed the Cultural/Educational, etc. Exchange Agreement between Czechoslovakia and United States some time ago.

Then, recently, Mr. Antonin Hora, a Czechoslovak Embassy secretary for cultural/educational affairs (in Washington, D.C.) visited here and in a two - hour conversation with your editor expressed their interest in Texas and, especially, the interest of Czech Moravian - Texans in their heritage.

He was very interested in your editor's information that Czech has been taught at the University of Texas since 1914. We were, especially, pleased to receive the following information this week. We feel this is welcome information to many of us in Texas. *** Department of Slavic Languages UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN National Resource Center in Soviet and East European Studies: The Program for Soviet and East European Studies at UT has just received confirmation that UT has been designated a National Resource Center of Soviet and East European Studies under TITLE VI grants from the Department of Education. This designation came about after a rigorous round of applications and

strong competition from other universities in the nation. This is indeed a privilege since the Center will service a large geographical area of the South and the Southtwest in the U.S. In addition, designation as a Center for Soviet and East European Studies will facilitate the development of a considerable network of support activities for the Czech program.

Among the benefits of the designation will be: 1) An East European Writer in Residence for one semester (plans are proceeding for the first such writer in residence to be Czech and to be at UT in the Spring of 1989; 2) The procurement of additional teaching materials, library acquisitions, travel grants; 3) Various guest lecturers; 4) Foreign Language Area Fellowships for Students.

In addition, numerous additional functions relating to Czech are beginning to be planned for the academic year of 1988 - 89. Among these are a Czech film series and a couple of small mini - conferences on various aspects of Czech Culture. *** had Recently, we received information from Czechoslovakia that Texas had been designated where the Czech government would accept three students for Czech study and if these were not filled, the positions would be offered to some other countries, instead. In a conversation with Professor Calvin Chervenka, we learned that they had been accepted and filled due in part to efforts of CESAT (Czech Ex - Students and Teachers). It is news like this we are grateful for.

We hope that news like this will help create enough interest to help us reach our goal in CEFT of establishing a Czech Endowment (Chair) here in Texas at one of the universities. *** To our youth -- The deadline for T shirts has been extended to Thursday, May 26th, however, you still have time to order if you call SYD Claudette Reese at Supreme Lodge. CESAT Announces Mieek Scholarship May 11, 1988 The Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas has announced that it will award a $2,000.00 scholarship to a Texas college student for the 1988 - 89 academic year.

To be eligible, students must be working in areas of Czech studies, either majoring in Czech language or working in other degree programs with emphasis on Czech subjects.

Applicants must be Texas residents or enrolled in Texas universities. Both graduate and undergraduate students are eligible.

Filing deadline is June 30, 1988.

CESAT is a statewide organization whose purpose is to promote the study of Czech immigrant culture and language in Texas. The scholarship is named for Dr. Eduard Mi&k, an early and long - serving Czech educator at the University of Texas and tireless promoter of Czech studies.

Minutes Of The SPJST District III Meeting Held April 17, 1988 At Lodge 84 In Dallas The SPJST District III spring meeting was held on Sunday, April 17, 1988 at Lodge 84 in Dallas. The meeting was called to order at 10:30 a.m. with Brother Richard Burney, president, presiding.

Larry Yates led the Pledge of Allegiance and recited the SPJST Motto.

Sister Evelyn Salac, secretary of Lodge 84, welcomed all members and guests.

Response was by 1st vice president, Brother Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr. Second vice president, Sister Mydell Grochoske, on behalf of District III officers and entire membership, expressed condolences to the families of 44 departed brothers and sisters. A moment of silence was observed as a tribute to these and to all departed brothers and sisters.

The following were appointed to serve on the Audit Committee: Brother Robert Dobecka, Lodge 6; Brother Emil Petr, Lodge 84 and Brother Ray Orsag, Lodge 66.

The minutes of the preceding meeting held on October 25, 1987 in Fort Worth were approved as published in the Vestnik.

Brother Sid Pokladnik, District III director, reviewed the Rules and Regulations as set up in the R&Rs concerning the duties of the secretary, pointing out that accurate minutes of all deliberations get to the Vestnik for publication 30 days after the meeting.

There was some discussion as to whether or not the minutes should be printed 30 days prior to the next meeting, thus serving as a memory jogger. Brother George Pauling moved that we amend the R&Rs to read that minutes be published in the Vestnik 30 days prior to the next meeting. The motion was seconded by Brother Rudy Sefcik, editor, and it carried. The change in the amendment to the R&Rs will be voted on at the fall district meeting.

Brother Jerry Milan, vice chairman of the By - laws Committee, reported they had three meetings with the next one scheduled next weekend in Temple. He stated this has been a very important year for the By - laws Committee since it is a convention year. He discussed some of the issues coming up, including direct bill of all local lodges, increases in allocations by the Supreme Lodge to district general expense funds, to hosting lodges of district meetings and youth activities day, attendance at By - laws Committee meetings, recommendation to have annual workshop in first quarter of year for training of local lodge officers, recommendation that votes of Supreme Lodge officers and directors at Supreme Lodge meetings be published along with what is passed and not passed, recommendation to have Certified Public Accountant annually audit the books or to check status of the Society, recommendation that the Supreme Lodge work toward SPJST Recreation Center, re - work duties of the Supreme Lodge President and other Supreme Lodge officers, recommendation to completely re structure the way the Society was organized, premium refunds to local lodges, changes in the way some of the delegates are elected to the convention, and recommendation concerning the number of appraisers that are used and recommendation for use of private appraiser to go with the district director on certain loans. Brother Milan stated the By - laws Committee strives to get the best set of by - laws for our Society -- by - laws that do the best good for the, largest number of members. He stated he had enjoyed serving on this committee and thanked everyone for giving him that opportunity.

Brother Arnold Vrla, chairman District III Finance Committee, stated the Finance Committee and By - laws Committee on certain items

intertwined. He mentioned he felt the Supreme Lodge should provide more assistance to the host lodge of district meetings and youth activities. He stated on some occasions the lodges suffer losses when it is necessary for them to rent a facility for the event.

Brother Vrla stated those serving on the Finance Committee were business people, intelligent, and were fraternalists. He reported they have had two joint meetings with the By laws Committee on the things that intertwine and that it was a pleasure working with that committee. He stated much time is spent on researching information, and in getting reports on information requested. The committee had always received prompt and accurate information which prepared them well in furnishing answers to some of the problems. Brother Vrla stated the By laws and Finance Committees would have a detailed report in the Vestnik 30 days before the convention. He asked that these be read, studied carefully, and taken to the membership to see what they want so that delegates would be prepared when they come to the convention. Brother Vrla stated he was proud to serve on the Finance Committee as chairman because others on this committee are very capable and because of the superb cooperation from the Home Office.

Greetings from the Supreme Lodge were brought by Brother Leonard Mikeska, secretary - treasurer, from the Home Office. Brother Mikeska congratulated and presented Brother Daniel Roznovsky a Fraternal Insurance Counselor certificate on his completion of a prescribed course of study required by the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counselors. Brother Roznovsky was also presented a gold FIC pin to be worn beside his SPJST pin.

Brother Mikeska complimented all committees for their excellent reports.

He talked briefly about the convention and said they plan to make the stay as convenient as possible and to see they have a good time. There may be some problems with accommodations, due to the softball tournament held that weekend, but he said they will see to it that they get solved. He stated there would be catered lunches available at the Convention Center and encouraged the delegates to try the meal on Monday.

Brother Mikeska stated the SPJST is in outstanding shape but there are some things that can be improved upon. He stated we have a very good fraternal program over the State of Texas; SPJST has a good portfolio, and members have an opportunity to purchase the best products available.

He is encouraged and senses a strong desire to now start concentrating more on fraternal activities. He also stated that one of the things he feels is important and that is creating a lot of interest is the refund to lodges. The Supreme Lodge has come up with a formula for a new rebate program that will be made public shortly and which will require a change in the by - laws. It includes rebate for new products, another formula per member, and incentive for sales of new products within the lodges. He mentioned some members find it difficult to see the connection between life insurance and fraternal activities. The SPJST has many facets and this is one of the facets -- the insurance program brings in revenues and profits are diverted to use in the area of fraternal activities.

They are definitely tied together and support one another.

Brother Ben Jarma, chairman of the Insurance Committee, reported they had held two meetings in Temple. He discussed some of the things coming before the Insurance Committee, including, recommendation to modify JT Term Policy plan which would be initially from 0 to age 25; reported new rate books should be delivered before the convention, blood testing was endorsed; discussed the importance of all sales representatives attending lodge meetings, district meetings and sales seminars; proposal to establish a Screening Committee for the positions of Supreme Lodge officers, directors and editor from which candidates will be selected. Brother Jarma also reminded members there was still time to submit any change to the Insurance Committee. He stated he enjoyed serving on the committee and will continue to do so if he can.

The following financial reports were submitted by Brother Albert Banik, treasurer. District Ill General Fund -Balance 10 - 25 - 87 -- $876.13, Income -- $678.80, Disbursements -- $300.00; leaving a balance of $1,254.93. The District III Youth Fund Balance as of 10 - 25 - 87 -- $2,519.12. There was no income and no disbursements, leaving a balance as of 4 - 17 - 88 of $2,519.12.

Brother Banik thanked the lodges in District III for sending in their dues which had been increased from 5 cents to 10 cents per member.

Brother Albert Banik, vice chairman of the District III Publication Committee, reported on their meeting on February 27, 1988 when they discussed such issues as circulation of the Vestnik and paid advertisements that conflicted with fund - raisers of lodges. He reported there was a good working relationship between the Supreme Lodge, the editor and the publisher of the Vestnik. He said the biggest complaint, as it has been for a long time, was the poor quality of pictures published in the Vestnik.

Consideration was given to selecting a better quality paper and an estimated cost of this would be furnished by Editor Brother Sefcik. Other changes that might be coming up at the convention regarding the Vestnik included a recommendation that the editor have a resident office at the Supreme Lodge, also, were to consider whether to elect or hire an editor.

Brother Banik stated he has enjoyed working with the Publication Committee since 1953 and would appreciate support at the coming convention.

Brother Sefcik stated he was asked to and did contact the publisher concerning the cost of different grades of paper and was advised we would have to wait about 2 weeks to get the actual cost. He stated the present Vestnik costs 11.9 cents a copy and the cost would be 20 cents a copy with the use of a better grade of paper. Brother Sefcik stressed the need for good pictures. He reminded all lodges to send in histories to be published in the convention issue of the Vestnik to be published on June 15th. He stated that other issues of the Vestnik would be on June 22 during the convention; no issue on June 29, and issue on July 6th.

Brother Sefcik discussed the suggestion that one issue of the Vestnik be sent to every family in our organization. A form would be enclosed asking each family to indicating complete and return whether or not they wish to continue taking the Vestnik. About 34,000 copies would be mailed. It was agreed the Vestnik is the best means of advertisement that the Society has.

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, May 25, 1988 Brother Sid Pokladnik, director of District III, expressed his appreciation and stated he was grateful for all the important committees that are responsible for the convention. He stated the Vestnik was great and mentioned that the SPJST is the only Society in the United States that puts out a weekly publication. He agreed the Vestnik should be used as a tool and commented on the cost of mailing.

He stated that, as in any business, the costs have to be studied carefully.

Brother Pokladnik presented a check from the Supreme Lodge to Treasurer Brother Banik as follows: $3,298.05 for 9,423 certificates 35 cents for 16 years and over as of December 31, 1987; check to District III General Expense Fund for $450.00 and an allocation for District Youth Activity Day $100.00. He announced the three people in District III who were top salesmen in 1987: 1st place, Larry Laznovsky (Lodge 135); 2nd, Norma Alford (Lodge 84) and 3rd, Emil Petr (Lodge 84). He reported that in the top 20 sales in March 1988, in District III, Brother Emil Petr was top salesman and Brother Arnold Vrla was second. District III had sold $2,286,000 of insurance and the annual earned premium was $73,528.

He announced that the incentive program for 1988 will be a cruise.

Brother Pokladnik complimented Brother Leonard Mikeska for doing a No. I job and stated he deserved a lot of • credit. It is through good investments that we are able to do fraternal things. He talked about the importance of fraternal programs and stated there will be a pastry contest, horseshoe tournament and quilting contest held at the fall district meeting.

He announced there will be a volleyball tournament on a district basis on November 5, 1988 at the Temple Recreation Center. Details concerning all the rules and regulations will be sent later by the Home Office.

Brother Pokladnik reported the benefit of the 8.75 percent refund to local lodges in 1987 amounted to $205,874 regardless if on direct bill or not. The premium refund on cash values amounted to $107,912 making a total of over $300,000 on only two items for fraternal benefits given by our Society.

Brother Pokladnik reported on the examination by the State Board of Insurance. The report was good. They reported they had excellent cooperation from all officers at the Home Office. Cost for the complete audit was $23,000. He also talked about the responsibilities that he has of being a director, and stated Brother Mikeska had tried to get liability insurance but it was decided at this time the coverage would cost too much.

Brother Pokladnik briefed members on the financial report prepared each year for the Insurance Board, on rates for some loans, interest rates, and on commercial loans. He discussed the proposal of having an outside private appraiser which would be quite an additional expense.

As S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes director, Brother Pokladnik reported that Rest Home No. I was full and that No. II Rest Home was one short. The charge at either rest home is $33.64 per day.

He discussed the many expenditures necessary to keep in compliance with the State Board of Health and reported both rest homes have a No. I evaluation by the State. He hoped the Finance Committee would look with favor on their request for a substantial sum with which to pay for necessary repairs as they arise in the future.

Brother Pokladnik thanked everyone for their interest and stated he had given his best in serving as director of District III and would like to serve another four years.

District youth counselor Sister Bessie Petr reported at their youth meeting it was decided to have a volleyball tournament for the youth at the next district meeting, and that $100 would be donated to Rest Home No. I. She announced that the lodges had cookbooks for sale. The lodge had paid the district for these and, as the books are sold, the proceeds go to the lodge. The profit on each book is about $4.00. District III Youth Club officers were elected as follows: President - Tara Andreason, Vice President - Larry Yates, Secretary Meribeth Novak, Treasurer - Keri Andreason, Photographer/Reporter Butch Wigley.

Sister Petr reported on the Youth Leader's Retreat held recently at Lone Star Camp at La Grange. She also discussed the need of a youth club at Lodges 54 and 130, and stated that she is currently working with Lodge 183 on the organization of their youth club.

Sister Petr encouraged the youth to attend youth club meetings and to attend camp during the summer. Due to the Convention, Sister Petr reported that all forms needed to be sent in early for the YAD on June 26 at Lodge 66.

A youth clinic was scheduled at which time changes in rule books would be discussed and various forms for camp and YAD would be available.

Sister Mydell Grochoske read the names of 52 District III recipients of 50 - year pins.

At roll call of lodges, 82 members representing 12 lodges were present, with 103 persons having signed the guest book.

Brother Daniel Roznovsky moved at the next district meeting we have the quilting contest, pastry contest and horseshoe tournament as outlined by the Supreme Lodge. The motion was seconded by Sister Justine Andreason and it carried. The Supreme Lodge will provide $45 for each activity and if the district so desired, could give additional prizes.

Brother Albert Kubala talked about the success and interest in Taroky, and about the beginning of the tournaments. It was suggested those lodges interested in starting Taroky classes on a local level should contact the Supreme Lodge President. It was pointed out there was a growing interest in Taroky as well as in Dominoes and "42" Tournaments, all of which the Supreme Lodge supports.

The Audit Committee reported the District III General Expense books and the District III Youth Club books were in excellent order.

The Nominating Committee made the following recommendations: for President - Johnnie Gaidusek; 1st Vice President - Mydell Grochoske, 2nd Vice President - Emma Ceska, Treasurer - Albert Banik, Secretary Rose Mary Banik, District Youth Counselor - Bessie Petr, Assistant DYC - Rose Mary Banik, Flag Bearer Larry Yates. There were no nominations from the floor. A ir on was duly made, seconded and cl ed that the nominations by the committee be accepted.

It was agreed the next district meeting would be held at Lodge 25 in Ennis. Our thanks to Lodge 25 for requesting to host this meeting. A tentative date of October 23, 1988 was mentioned but it was understood the date will depend on scheduling at the host lodge.

Brother Albert Kubala announced he is a candidate for District III substitute director.

Officers were installed by Brother Sid Pokladnik.

Our thanks to Lodge 84 in Dallas for being so gracious in hosting this very successful meeting. The food was delicious and the hospitality great. The program presented by the youth was enjoyed by all and the youth members of Lodge 84 are to be congratulated for their parts in the "Spring District III Salute." Wonderful Czech music during the lunch hour was provided by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Brother Pokladnik. It was great -- our sincere thanks to Brother Sid and to all his great musicians.

Our thanks to the Home Office for the donation of the SPJST dominoes, jacket, cap and floating pen. These and a total of $100 in cash were awarded as door prizes at various intervals throughout the day.

Hardship Cases To Finance Committee For 1988 Submit

Dear Brothers and Sisters: We are preparing for the 1988 Convention to be held in Temple on June 19, 1988 and, as in the past, the convention has provided assistance to members of the SPJST Society who were judged as hardship cases. We would like to continue this policy at the June Convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his/her name to the local lodge officers who, in turn, will review the case.

2. The application must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

3. The application must explain why he/she needs assistance.

4. There is no age limit for the member who needs assistance.

5. It makes no difference where the member is living.

6. The donation is not of a great sum and is for one time only.

7. The application must be mailed to the Finance Committee no later than May 30, 1988. Letters postmarked after May 30 will not be considered.

All cases will be reveiwed by the committee before the convention; none will be accepted at the convention.

Sunday, May 1, at 1:15 p.m., our monthly meeting was called to order

by President Johnnie Krizan. The pledge to our flag was led by Kevin and Tammi Dobecka; then Tammi read the SPJST Motto. All remained standing for a moment of silence for our deceased member, Sister Anna Ondrej, age 82, who passed away Tuesday, April 5 at the West Haven Nursing Home and was our member since June 22, 1939. Our sympathy is extended to the family.

The minutes of our last meeting were read by Sister Barbara Hykel who also gave the treasurer's report for Sister Karen Kroll who was absent.

Brother George Straten reported on the financial standings. All reports were approved. All the correspondence including letters and thank you notes were read.

New members accepted are Amy M. Hromadka and Jessica Ryan Uptmore.

We had 3 transfers, namely, Sister Ruth Dudik, Brothers Willie Skerik and Henry Matus. We welcome them and are glad to have them among us.

We hope they will come and visit our socials and other activities whenever they can.

For our annual picnic this year, the membership voted on the ticket prizes to be taken care of by Bobby and Peggy Dobecka. We appreciate their efforts and thanks for accepting the duties. All members are asked to help out with this project. Our annual picnic will be held this year, July 17; more on this letter.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz gave her report on all her work of doings with the club. They made very pretty pink corsages for mothers for Mother's Day; all mothers, present at the meeting, received one. Thanks a bunch, it was nice and sweet of you all to do this. They are also working on other projects every Friday night.

Door prize winner for this meeting was Peggy Dobecka. The progressive prize's name of $10 drawn was Mary Krizan (not present), the other name for $10 drawn was R.D. Bush (not present, either); starting on third prize of $1, name drawn was Tomas Blaha (not present). Another dollar will be added to each monthly meeting if the member isn't present and so on until this third prize reaches $10.

Our next Board of Trustees' meeting will be Friday, May 27 at 7:45 p.m. and our regular lodge meeting was set for Friday, June 3 at 8 p.m.; supper will be served before our meeting, so mark the change of dates on your calendar or wall so you cannot say you forgot all about it. All new members and transferees are invited and welcome to be with us on this occasion. After the meeting, there will be domino and Taroky playing and other games. Just attend!

Correspondence -- A letter was received for the "42" Domino Tournament. We would all like to thank Mildred Horak, Lucille Leitko and Arnold and Florence Tydlacka for participating in the tournament.

There were three 50 - year pins given at the meeting; namely, (1) Mary Kubena, (2) Frank Horak and (3) Henry Ondrasek. At our next meeting, we will have cake and punch for the 50 - year members.

After one correction, Secretary June Harwell's report was approved as read. Treasurer Pat Hillman and Financial Secretary Sidonia Svoboda's reports were also approved as read.

All officers were present, except Vice President Joe Zajicek.

Much happiness is wished to Mike and Robin Ritchery on the birth of their little daughter.

Secretary June Harwell read a thank you note from the Standy Svetlik family.

President Leslie Sakewitz presented the 50 - year pin to Brother Emil Stalmach. Congratulations, Emil, we hope we have you around with us for a long time to come.

The members voted to sell sweets at the Buckholts School reunion which will be June 4, so all members are asked to bring cakes, pies or kolache.

We want to thank Milton Shiller and Leslie Sakewitz for painting the kitchen cabinets and cutting the grass around the hall. Everything sure does look pretty.

The club will have a food booth at the Buckholts Cotton Festival so we are looking for a lot of help from our members. The Cotton Festival will be held August 6th. Now, remember, we will have a dance on June 4 and another one on August 5th.

Our next meeting will be June 8 at 7 p.m. I hope to see you all there.

Lodge No. 17, New Tabor held its regular monthly meeting May 1st with all officers present. Hall Manager Gladys and Activities Director Bud Petty were absent.

A Resolution was read for Sister Frances Schiller and we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of our departed sister.

Billy Cox was a visitor with a transfer in "the works."

Youth Leader Susan Skrabanek reported that the Beseda dancers had been asked to Huntsville for the East Texas Folk Fair and they did go and participate.

Susan also asked to have the land across from the hall, that is not in use at all, be considered for a volleyball court. There will be a meeting of the Board of Trustees along with CSA to consider this.

We welcome one new member Nickolous Piwonka to Lodge 17.

Dear Members: The garage sale which was held on May 7 was very successful. Because of the generosity of our members, quite a few articles were left from this sale, therefore, we will have another sale on Saturday, June 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A bake sale will also be held along with the garage sale, so ladies make or bake your special goodies and let's make this sale even more successful.

Also, thanks to all those players who helped clean up our lodge after the tournament. Many of the players from other lodges pitched in and helped get our hall cleaned after this event. We really appreciate it. Thanks also to all ladies and gentlemen from our lodge who helped out in the kitchen/bar during the tournament.

In my last letter I omitted SHIRLEY KELAREK as having helped out with the refreshments at the "42" playoffs on March 18th. Thanks, Shirley, for helping our lodge out at this time.

Carol Chervenka reported that the Bingo Committee is in a position to make contribution to a worthy cause, again. The membership decided to give $200 to our youth club in assisting them in various activities.

NOTE: The Cyclone Youth Club is having a hamburger supper on May 20 starting at 6 p.m. for a cost'of $2. This includes hamburger, chips and tea.

Let's all make a note of this event and come out and support our youth. The youth members are the future of our lodge, so let's reward their hard work with our presence at their fund - raiser.

One of our youth who we are especially proud of is Kristie Waits.

Kristie, who is a freshman, represented Rogers High School at the Regional Track Meet in Victoria, April 29th and 30th. She competed in hurdles and high jump. Kristie came out 4th in the hurdles. We are so proud of you, Kristie. Keep those legs flying!

Bouquets of flowers were given out to the youngest and oldest mothers present at our meeting. Youngest mother present was Carol Chervenka and oldest was Lottie Luksa. A very happy Mother's Day was wished to all mothers from our lodge.

Door prizes were won by Lorene Haisler and Joe Baker. Our next meeting is June 7 at 7:30 p.m. We were happy to see some new faces at our lodge meeting this month. We hope there will be many more in the future.

The May meeting for Lodge 24, Flag Hall, was held on, May 3rd. Our attendance was up this month. Thanks to all of you who came out and joined us and please come, again.

Fortunately, this month we seem to have all healthy members. No one was reported on the sick list.

New members who were voted into our lodge this month are Kenneth and Monica Drake. We look forward to meeting all our new members at lodge functions. Welcome!

Special days for our members this month are birthdays -- Carol Chervenka (May 1), Louise Zavodny (May 10), Bernice Sebek (May 16), Larry Posvar (May 27) and Nancy Posvar (May 30).

The State "42" Tournament was held at our lodge on April 9th. Seventy people attended this tournament.

Johnny Chervenka and Billy Smetanka came out in 4th place, Larry and Wesley Plumlee came in 7th. Thanks to all of you guys for representing us at this tournament. Lodges who won at the tournament were: 1st Place - San Antonio, 2nd - Taylor, 3rd - Seaton.

Congratulations to these fine players.

The regular monthly meeting was held on Monday, May 16, 1988, following the Bingo games.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order. Youth Member Kim Kacal led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. We observed a minute of silence for our deceased and sick members.

Secretary Leona Macha called roll of officers -- absent were 2nd Vice President Dora Lee Kopecky who was ill. We mised you, Dora Lee, also absent were Trustees James Kulcak and Albert Kresta, Sr. The minutes of our previous meeting held on Monday, April 18, 1988 were approved as printed in the Vestnik.

Correspondence received since the last meeting was read.

Officers' reported on their respective activities. Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek reported on dinner held in honor of graduating youth members.

Treasurer Madeline Shimek presented our financial report. A copy of her report is on file and a part of these minutes.

A motion by Leona Macha, seconded by Bennie Reck, to send a contribution to the Scholarship Fund

as a memorial for Anton Kelner, Sr., past treasurer of District VI, who died recently.

Members voted to contribute $101.00 to El Campo Volunteer Fire Department for fire prevention material to be used by the school children.

Meeting date for our next meeting is set for Monday, June 13, 1988 instead of Monday, June 20, 1988 because convention being in progress.

Lodge 47 Picnic, June 5th Dear Brothers and Sisters: Lodge No. 47 Seaton is asking your support and presence at their Lodge 47 Picnic scheduled for Sunday, June 5, 1988 beginning at 11:30 a.m. when serving of barbecue plates with all trimmings, barbecue sandwiches, hamburgers and French fries.

Individual kolache, cakes, pies, etc. will be available; so will coffee. A country store will have homemade items, canned goods, breads, pastries, aprons, bonnets, etc. Games include the teddy bear stand, ring - a - coke, fish pond, dunking booth and ball throwing.

Free musical entertainment will be provided for your listening enjoyment.

Three circles of the youth club Beseda dancers will perform plus two circles of the adult dancers. Charles Mikeska and the Sensations, Ike's Oompa Band and a surprise band of local talent will fill the last hour.

The auction is scheduled for 5 p.m. until all donated items are sold. Your support of this project is encouraged.

Since we are commemorating 85 years of our lodge's existence and the 25th year of the present lodge hall, a short program is planned with a distinguished speaker.

A green plants' booth will, again, be available.

So we are inviting everyone from far and near to come and celebrate with us. There will be enough free entertainment and, oh, yes, a FREE dance following the auction with Charles Mikeska and the Sensations providing the music. There will be plenty of cold beverages to quench your thirst and plentiful variety of foods to satisfy your appetite.

Seaton Star Hall is located 5 miles east of Temple on Highway 53, if anyone needs directions. Be making plans to see old friends and possibly make some new ones. A fun - time for everyone is in the plans of this lodge for this picnic.

SPJST Lodge No. 49, Rowena For the 12th year members and friends of SPJST Lodge No. 49, Rowena participated in the Runnels County Ethnic Cultures' Festival in Ballinger, Texas on April 30th and May lst.

Featured were Czech, German, Scotch, Negro, Mexican and English food booths. This year the Indian culture canceled out at the last minute.

As in the past, we had baked kolache for several weeks prior to the festival, until we ran out of freezer space. We were completely sold out of our large supply by 1 o'clock, and many people were disappointed that they did not get there in time.

The sisters who worked so diligently in making the sweet kolache dough, preparing a large variety of fruit such as prune, peach, apricot, poppyseed, pecan - coconut, pineapple, cottage cheese, apple, and preparing the strusel topping, baking, glazing and wrapping in a sandwich bag were Lula Maracek, Elizabeth Urbanek, Elizabeth Walther, Flora Lisso, Eddie Mae Huebner, Minnie Pavlicek, Emma Havlak, Olga Sturm, Joyce Mikeska, Lorene Wright, Pauline Shiller, and even two of our Lodge 49 Brothers Emil Havlak and Pete Lisso helped in any capacity asked of them.

We are fortunate to have the mixing, cooking, baking facilities in our Lodge 49 Hall so that it is a team effort.

Lodge No. 81, Needville Dear Members: Our Lodge 81 met on Tuesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. with our President Charlie Matcek calling the meeting to order.

We were honored to have S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Director Louis Hanus and his lovely wife, Oleta with us. We are always happy to have you.

Mary Matcek led in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and we remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed Brothers Willie Zemanek and Charlie Koupa. May our brothers rest in peace and may their memory live among us.

Secretary Mary Werner read the roll call and all officers were present; she also read the minutes and financial report. Willie Mae Kuykendall gave the treasurer's report and Gilbert Walzel gave the Special Fund report.

All reports were accepted as read.

Correspondence was read by Mary Werner, a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar concerning the domino player winner from our lodge and also passed pictures of players to see. A thank you note from March of Dimes was read and also a note from Ernest Huff. We're always glad to hear from Ernest.

Mary Sue Zemanek was reported on the sick list. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Our Rest Home Director Louis Hanus read a letter of congratulations to the SPJST delegates elected to the convention, to all the faithful workers and also asking the delegates for support at re - election at the convention. He spoke on several items of interest concerning the by - laws.

In new business, it was voted to make a donation to the project graduation for Senior Graduates' Party.

Next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 14 at 7 p.m. We would love to see more members come to our meetings.

Many of our members remember Ruth and Seth Duncan. Ruth was a fine youth leader for several years; anyway, Seth died on April 9 and was buried in Livingston, where they had lived for a number of years. Wanda Elzner Kennedy, his stepdaughter, worked long hours at Lodge 88 and, at one time, was president of the Birthday Club and also financial secretary. If there are any errors in this, I'm sorry, because no one gave me any information. We sympathize with you, Ruth and family.

On March 19, Phoebia Lahrmann died. She was the mother of our faithful Birthday Club member, Edna Froelich. We also sympathize with you and your family.

Tillie Helmcamp, who is on the By law Committee of the SPJST told me she's made four trips to Temple in a few months. The fourth time she asked Lillie Spies to travel with her. Lillie told me she had a wonderful time going through the museum and when they got to an old, old sewing machine it wasn't in running condition, so she proceeded to work on it, and she said it was running in "high gear" before she left. She marveled at the beautiful SPJST building and, of course, the spice of the building is the fine personnel. Tillie said she had to go back on Mother's Day. Guess who went with her this time! Jeanette Eubank, her daughter and her prize, Brooks Eubank, her grandson.

On Saturday, April 30, Richard and Gladys Smallwood were in charge of the dance and were assisted by Homer and Rita Alexander. The Texas Dutchmen furnished music which was very good.

Mother's Day, I'm sure, was a beautiful day for many of us. I was with my daughter and husband, Al and Arlene Marshall of Weimar. They entertained 25 people with barbecue chicken and sausage. ***

On May 9, 1988, we had our monthly meeting with 136 in attendance.

President Jerry Ermis announced that June 5 is Homecoming and Splash Day. Members are entitled to a free barbecue dinner, provided your $6 membership fee has been paid. You have a membership card which you can present to the cashier. Don't miss this gala affair; there is entertainment at all times, such as Bingo from 2 to 4 p.m., a spinning wheel, a drawing and a FREE dance from 5 to 9 p.m. with Lee Roy Rybak furnishing the music. Lee Roy will also play at the Gazebo from 12 to 4 p.m. The Birthday Club will have a pastry booth with Lillie Spies in charge. We hope our members will bring some pastries for us.

Karl Lindemann reported on the swimming pool; he said Lodges 142, 176 and 172 have been invited to come swim at Lodge 88. The pool opens on June 4th.

Chairman of the board, Bobby Miksch, gave the board report for the month of April. He stated they have done quite a bit of work and have much more to do. He mentioned that the SVPS barbecue will be August 21 at Lodge 88.

Tim Kostom, chairman of the Building Committee, with the assistance of Karl Lindemann and Royal Warnasch, presented the plans for our new building which will soon be underway. We'll have a building that will accommodate 300 people, also, it will be a building for our youth and lodge committee meetings, et cetera. The plans are very appealing to most members. Our Building Committee has worked rather hard and long hours to do the best for our lodge.

Tim Kostom, Choral Group director, reported for the group in the absence of President Gene Barcak. He stated that they went to Rosenberg for the 13th year for the Czech Fest. He also welcomed anyone who can carry a tune , to join them since a few couples have moved away and he needs to replace them. He mentioned one big event is the Caldwell Czech Fest on September 10 in which the Band and Choral Group will participate.

Harley Cox, the entertainment chairman, was quite happy about the good attendance at the April dances.

He said the only complaint he has is that people reserve tables and then "Don't Show" or don't even call and cancel, which makes it an uncomfortable situation, especially for those who are in charge of the dance. Your dance schedule is on the last of the Vestnik, or a calendar is available at the Lodge 88 office.

Bob and Ruth Martinak were "Bubbling Over" with joy the other night at the monthly meeting. I later discovered that their daughter, Rhonda, and husband, Bob Gindrate, had a little girl, Tracy, born to them on April 16, 1988 weighing 7 lbs. and 10 ozs. That makes a total of 3 little girls, Tiffany, 4; Trina, 2; and Tracy, 3 weeks old. They'll all grow up at the same time. Bob and Ruth have a son, Richard, and wife, Annette, who have 2 boys and soon another one will join the boys. What a lovely family!

The 50 - year pin celebration was so beautiful. Only 7 candidates attended but they brought their families and a real good time was had by all. I visited with Grandma Hanka and she's still so interested in our SPJST Society. She told me she spent many hours at the lodge, and naturallly she has time to think about it all. Her health is pretty good, and the care is superb.

We attended the Nick Navarro dance on May 14 and were greeted at the door by our sincere friends, Stacie Kocich in charge of the dance, and her helpers Bennie Kocich, Milert and Evelyn Antrich, Roy and Evelyn Vogt.

Stacie said we are "All Cousins."

Robert Kennedy made this statement to his 11 children, "Everyone should make a difference."

Oh yes, the project started in August 1986.

The goal was 500.

Your Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) estimated two years (August 1988) to reach this goal if we all at Lodge No. 88 put it in high gear and never put our foot on the brake until we saw 500.

Would you believe that we reached 502 on January 24, 1988, just about 7 months ahead of schedule. How do you like that? It meant that everyone started putting their shoulder to the wheel.

Since the first goal went by like GREASED LIGHTING what was your FAC to do?

Set another goal it was -- this time 1,000.

Again, your FAC took the liberty to make another wild estimated completion date.

This date of December 1988 seemed rather reasonable but we'll know later if I am a BUM ESTIMATOR. As of May 11, 1988 we at No. 88 have already reached 873. Good huh?

Many members, as well as non members, have made this possible, but there's still others who are also contributing. Lodge No. 92, F Worth Our May meeting was Mother's Day and Father's Day celebration. The lodge does very nice things for its parents, so every mother and father received a nice gift from our lodge; that's always for remembering the work our members have done to keep the good fraternal spirits among its members. We do wish more mothers and fathers were present, but some parents' daughters and sons are living out - of - town and they wanted to be with them on that special day.

Anyway, all those present got to have a wonderful meal which was bought ready to eat; no one really had to cook, but Sister Helen Kubala and Sister Mary Krivanek made arrangements to have it ready. I remember that our Vice President John Paprskar and I volunteered to serve food. (Of course, here at our lodge everyone pitches in so all went well.) All the nice mothers arranged to have pastries with our meal. Boy, these Czech gals sure know their business about pastries. We haven't found anything that wasn't good! As for the dishwasher, Carl Zich and John Paprskar drying dishes, got the kitchen clean. We all kid each other during cleanup of the dishes/pots and pans that sometimes it seems the pots got washed 4 or 5 times just to keep the dishwasher busy; all of this was done in fun. This is what really makes our lodge as well as other lodges fraternal and something to be proud to be a part of in our organization.

Our Secretary Christine Zich does a fine job taking minutes but this time it was a little hard on her because she has been having a backache for two weeks.

She has been going to the doctors for X - rays so we hope soon the pains will be gone. We did miss Sister Bennie Bartek so be sure to attend our next meeting; she is one of our oldest members and has done a lot for our lodge.

Our members Brother and Sister Henry Langer, who resided at the Leisure Rest Home in Weatherford, recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. We wish them many more years together; a nice card signed by members present was sent to them.

We were told that Sister Justine Chaloupka's brother - in - law, Brother Luksa in Temple, passed away. Brother Joe Juran had foot surgery; he has been taking care of his wife, Anna, for many years at home and all of you know what a job that can be. We wish all good health soon.

Sister Nancy Paprskar had surgery in a Dallas hospital so we hope she will be fine and will be attending our meetings. Brother Joe and Nancy do come from Dallas to the meetings and that is quite a drive to get here, but they do enjoy being with their friends here.

Phillis Swinford, granddaughter of Esta Belle Hubenak graduated from Oklahoma College. Brother Stephen Chaloupka graduated from school; he is a soccer player and a coach. We wish them and all grads good years ahead.

The list of birthday celebrants over 65 is quite long but all were sent cards for the month of May. Joyce and Frankie Tesar are redoing the dance floor and under the tables with a sealer and it is really nice. It will keep water from causing dark spots and also from rotting. The floor will be very nice to dance on because it will be slicker. The wood floor is maple and it is a pretty color again.

We also want you to remember that on October 8, 1988, we will be celebrating the anniversary of the hall opening of 50 years. This will be discussed more in future letters but, as of now, there will be two great bands playing for a dance that will be held.

Please keep in mind that date -OCTOBER 8, 1988!

The game nights are really fun, so come and learn Taroks and Poker and any other games that you want to play.

The first Tuesday will be like a tournament and you get to change tables and partners but the 3rd Tuesday will be for helping to learn and getting to know how we are going to win the next tournament at some other lodge.

I read something that I will pass on to you hoping you will enjoy knowing about it-History of the Polka Dance (Dialect of pulka '/2 means onehalf step) was originated in Bohemia (province of Czechoslovakia) and, definitely, not in Poland. The name "Polka" (pulka) was given to a Bohemian dance, created by a Czech girl in 1830. This because the rhythm of the dance is one - half of a measure • (as explained in all encyclopedias of the world). The word "Polka," therefore, has nothing whatever to do with Poland nor Polish where the dance was totally unknown while it was already introduced to the rest of Western Europe and even in the United States. It is a nice article to read. This dance was originated by a girl named Anicka Chadimova who entered an unhappy marriage union and worked as a farm hand to support her family. She died August 3, 1881, registered in the coroners' books as a pauper. Joseph Neruda, who first wrote the tune of the dance, was just as unhappy and strange; during the night of April 8, 1876, he was found murdered in his home.

139 Danbury Report

The May 11 meeting of Danbury Lodge 139 opened with the call to order by Vincent Hechler, president.

The minutes were read by Secretary Tommie Lostak and Financial Secretary Helen Filipp and Treasurer Lonnie Lostak each gave their report.

Correspondence was read by Lonnie Lostak.

It was announced that this year's Lodge 139 scholarship winner is Jason Vrazel. Jason had the highest grade point average of the Danbury High School seniors eligible for the scholarship. Jason is the son of Lewis and Pat Vrazel and the brother of Jarad Vrazel, the winner of the 1987 scholarship.

Members were advised that Eddie Filipp, Jr. is in Methodist Hospital in Houston.

Several members often send packages to family and friends in Czechoslovakia and, since postal rates are very high, it was voted to help defray these costs by the lodge paying up to $200, collectively, per year for postage. In order to be reimbursed for the postage paid, members will need to bring a receipt from the post office to the lodge meeting.

A social was held after the meeting adjourned.

Our dinner on Mother's Day that preceded our meeting was enjoyed by all. Sister Mary Renfro received a big hand for the delicious roast pork, roast beef and sauerkraut she prepared. A special thanks to all for their famous dishes and pastries.

Brother Jerry Milan, our president, called our meeting to order at 4 p.m.

He led us to the Pledge of Allegiance.

Our secretary, Sister Mary Renfro, read the minutes and they were approved as read and also our treasurer, Sister Mary Hale's report was approved.

Sister Mary Pavey reported on the get well and sympathy cards sent to members, and a card was read for the Georgia Stephens family.

Our vice president, Sister Rose Steinman, reported on the District III meeting and had photos on display.

Brother Milan read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge; and he reported on the By-law Committee meeting he attended May 7 and asked that all delegates read the by - law recommendations that will be published in the Vestnik and study them carefully, to help us when we vote.

Our youth leader presented beautiful plants that were donated by the youth club to our oldest mother, Sister Mary Hale, our youngest, Sister Kelly Eaton, and a special drawing for all other mothers named "Mother of the Year" was Sister Anna Johnson.

She reported on Sunday, May 29 the youth club will attend the "Shop of Harris" play at the Arlington Theatre where our former youth club member, Brother Bobby Joe Cleveland plays the part of Seymour. Everyone who has seen the play says it is wonderful.

Carolyn also paid a nice compliment to our State Youth Director, Sister Claudette Reese. The youth club is thinking about camp now; youth member, Ky Cleveland, spoke up and said: "All I am looking forward to is the SPJST Camp."

We extend our congratulations to Jill Parker; she was selected from 200 from high schools throughout the United States and named 1988 Congressional Scholar and will attend the National Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. and will attend Georgetown University. Her mother, Sister Donna Rose Parker, wouldn't let her daughter out do her, so she won second place at the "Gold For the Gold" Golf Tournament at the Fossil Creek Golf Club. She won a trip for 2 to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Congratulations!

We extend our get well wishes to Sister Tina Cox who was just released from hospital after having surgery and to Brother Johnny Kret who had surgery yesterday (9th) and we heard he is doing well, and to Sister Margie Cline who is back in the hospital. Get well, soon.

Due to a very busy June, it was voted not to have our next meeting until Sunday, July 10, so mark your calendar.

Our guests, June Jirik, Helen Johnson, Jewel Clark, John Neeley and Al Jirik were made welcome.

Article 95(d) of our By - laws provides that the Vestnik publish the names and addresses of the district and local lodge secretaries. This directory is printed in compliance with that By - law. A number of lodges have not submitted a list of officers for 1988 and in those instances, information from the previous year is listed.

Plans are to make this a bigger and better festival this year and the schedule is looking fantastic.

We have completed our Czech Class at Lodge 172 this week but plans are to begin another class this summer, beginning in July and August. I would encourage everyone who is interested in the Czech language and customs to attend; you not only learn to improve your Czech speech but also are informed of Czech history and everyday life in Czechoslovakia today and yesterday.

The everyday workers of our lodge have many maintenance duties to perform for the summer, such as mowing lawns and keeping the outside looking presentable, painting the concrete floors of the lodge, cleaning the air - conditioning system, waxing and polishing the huge oak dance floor and many other painting chores. We welcome additional help; it seems the same three or four workers are involved.

Other improvements we are planning to complete soon, are adding extra duct work and outlets under the eaves of the ballroom and constructing a large canopy over the driveway at the main entrance to our lodge building.

We need members to assist in completing this work and projects and less conversation.

Our Friday night ballroom and Saturday night country/western dances are doing well and we hope they will continue during the summer months. We hope some day soon to include polka and waltz dances on Sunday evenings if we can get enough of those fans interested.

I had the pleasure of visiting my oldest sister (81), Oma Clawson of Smackover, Arkansas; two of my sisters, Opal Herrington of Cameron, Texas and Ruth Beasley of Holland, Texas went with me. We had nice weather and Oma sure knew how to cook the fresh vegetables and cornbread!

My oldest grandson, James Tolson, Jr., will graduate from his school in Memphis, Tennessee in June. He is in the U.S. Navy. Of course, grandma just couldn't pass up not attending his wedding. He and wife, Shanna, had a beautiful wedding in Corpus Christi, Texas.

I had a very nice birthday! My son, Wayne, and his family were here and Janice, his wife, made me my birthday cake. I had greetings from my daughter, Edna Ann Kana, in Jacksonville, Florida and my oldest son, Gary Tolson, in Corpus Christi, so how much more could anyone wish for?

Our hostess, Evelyn Mikeska, made everyone feel so welcome at our meeting. Thanks, Evelyn, for letting us meet in your home.

With fourteen members and two guests, Luotte and Ernest Dueser present, our regular monthly meeting was held May 4 at 7:30 p.m. with Vice President Joe Hurtik presiding in absence of our President Louis Grochoske, who was unable to be present because of his injured leg.

After a moment of silence for our departed members and roll call of officers, the minutes of our previous meeting were read by Secretary Frances Simmank.

Correspondence included a letter from Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas thanking Mydell Grochoske for the fine job she had done as financial secretary for our lodge. Other correspondence was information on the changes in the liquior laws and a thank you card from Steve and Dalu Hurtik.

Our sincere sympathy to Roy Frank on the death of his father and to Bill Cuniff on the death of his father - in law.

Those attending District III meeting at Lodge 84 in Dallas were Mydell Grochoske, Julia Dueser, Ida Meyer, Kitty Rippin and Frances Simmank.

They reported a very nice meeting with Mydell being elected first vice president and Julia winning one of the door prizes. All commented on the delicious meal that was served.

Remember our trustees' and regular monthly meetings are being held on the same night; the next trustees' meeting will be Wednesday, June 1 at 6:30 p.m., and regular lodge monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Echos From Lodge 183, Mid-Cities Dear Members: It has been a while since writing a newsletter so I will start by giving you a recipe for a happy life: 1 cup good thoughts, 1 cup good deeds, 1 cup consideration for others, 3 cups forgiveness, 2 cups well - beaten faults and 4 cups prayer and faith. Mix first 5 ingredients thoroughly and add tears of joy, sorrow and sympathy for others. Fold in prayer and faith to lighten other ingredients and raise the texture of living to great heights. Bake well with heat of human kindness and serve your family with a smile.

Perhaps this is a recipe that all of us could use more often to create a more fraternal world to live in.

Things at the lodge are about the same except we could use more members to get involved and come to dances and socials at the regular meetings. Meetings are held on the second Sunday of each month right after Bingo, about 5 o'clock for the meeting and afterwards for a pot luck supper, games and socializing. The next regular meeting will be Sunday, June 12, so mark your calendar and be there; also you can find out what your lodge is doing and meet your fellow members.

Two graduates were given $50 gifts this , year; Kelly McNeely graduates from college and Randall Rejcek graduates from high school.

Congratulations and best wishes from the lodge and all of its members.

I need to hear from our members if there are any others who are graduating from high school or college this year. because the lodge does not want to miss anyone and any member who is graduating is due to receive the $50 gift from the lodge.

There were a large number of people at the last dance which was the first annual softball dance and the team members were honored and congratulated for their 7 wins and 1 loss season and are in the playoffs; let's cheer them on and maybe they can win the championship for our lodge!

Congratulations are in order for Jane and Rudy Rejcek who are proud grandparents and the grandbaby already attended its first dance at Lodge 183. Best wishes to the parents and lots of happiness.

I finally gave up in trying to fix my pickup and traded for a van, so I am like the song you can hear on the radio sometimes, I am a common man driving a common van and my doggie has a pedigree. Gracie and I plan to do some traveling this summer after my retiring from Bell Helicopter in July of this year after working 25 1/2 years with the company.

I am planning a 60th Birthday/Retirement Party at the July regular dance which will be July 16, so all of you SPJST members and friends come out and dance to the music of Henry Rejcek Polka Band and have a good time.

Softball Team Report Lodge 84, Dallas

Dear Brothers and Sisters: On Tuesday night, April 26, we played Gilmer Transportation and we lost by a score of 5 to 4 in an extra inning ballgame. We were tied 3 to 3 after 6 innings, then we went into overtime and we lost in the 8th inning.

Lionel Schulz, our starting pitcher, allowed 5 hits, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts and 3 runs in 5 21/2 innings. He was relieved

by Randy Furlow who hurled 2 IA innings allowing 3 hits, 3 walks, 1 strikeout and 2 runs. He was the losing pitcher on record. They both pitched very good and it's a shame we had to lose. We left too many runners stranded on bases and we could have scored more runs and won the game in regulation time.

Leading hitters were Don Lennox with a homerun, a triple and a single, Paul Bartos had 2 singles and a sacrifice, Clyde Wilsey had a double, Roger Little had a walk, Tommy Yates had a sacrifice, Craig Wood had a single, Danny Yates had a single and Jim Zoller had a walk.

Our next game was Tuesday night, May 3 and our opponents were the Gerald Campbell Insurance team. We had another thriller; we won the game by a score of 2 to 1. Tommy Yates was the winning pitcher allowing 8 hits, 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Paul Bartos with a double, a single and a sacrifice, Danny Yates had a single and a sacrifice, Randy Furlow, a double and a single, Dan Palm had a single, Mike Funk had a single, Tommy Yates, a single, Roger Little, a single, Clyde Wilsey, a single, Craig Wood, a sacrifice and Don Lennox, a walk. It was another close and exciting game.

Our records now stand 2 wins and 2 losses and it could easily been 4 wins.

It is a very good league so far.

Our schedule reads --May 24, 9:35 p.m. - vs. Roachbaks May 31, 8:10 p.m. - vs. Trans - Con All games are at Samuel Grand Diamond No. 2.

Saturday night, May 21 is an annual Softball Team Benefit Dance at 8:30 p.m. at 2625 Floyd Street, with music by the Czech Harvesters Orchestra playing your favorite tunes. Again, to all members and friends, other lodges in Dallas, Ennis, Ft. Worth, Burleson, Mid - Cities and in the State of Texas as well as all past and former ballplayers, we invite you to support our team by your presence, WE NEED YOUR HELP, so please come, have a good time and keep our team, we'll appreciate it. ***

Tuesday night, May 10th, we played Charlie's and we lost by a score of 7 to 0. Because we have an open date on a bye Tuesday, May 17, some of our players got that date with our game night mixed up and we barely had a team. Even though we were not full strength, we still lost the game.

Tommy Yates was the losing pitcher allowing 8 hits, 7 runs, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. We played poorly afield, several players were playing unfamiliar positions.

Offensively, we had only 2 base hits, both by Jim Zoeller and walks by Don Lennox and Craig Wood. It was also a late game at 9:35 p.m., however, we didn't get started until 10:30 p.m., because the game before us was all tied up and went into several extra innings; I guess it just wasn't our night!

Our next game is scheduled Tuesday, May 24 vs. Roachbacks at 9:35 p.m. and Tuesday, May 31 at 8:10 p.m. vs. Trans Con. Come on out and see the team play before the season ends. We'd love to see you at our games.

On May 11, 1988 the Birthday Club Sisters met for their monthly meeting and luncheon.

President Kathy Trefell called the roll and the attendance was very good.

Kathy introduced our new member, Juanita Simons. We have gained 5 new members this year; "How Great!"

Rosalee Kostom, secretary, read the April minutes which were approved as read, and she also read correspondence from the Albina Drawe family. We all loved, Albina.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave an encouragement financial report.

Historian Delores Candon introduced her friend, Betty Sowa, from Jolliet, Illinois.

Agnes Pederson, whose birthday is this month, informed me that she has celebrated for a week or more. Captain Eddie; her son, Lyn and wife, Denise, had a barbecue for her and son, Raymond and wife, Gracie, took her out to eat. Agnes wouldn't mind 2 birthdays a year, would you?

Our Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut has been in and out of the hospital with a neck injury from a previous fall in a department store.

She's feeling better now and is back at work. She reported she sent 6 get - well cards and 12 birthday cards in March and April.

The drawing for June 5 is doing fine. All the sisters have tickets to sell.

We have a beautiful Czech doll, a $100.00 bill, a beautiful Afghan made

by Estelle Kelly, which she donated to us. We really appreciate that, Estelle, (hope I'm "lucky"). We also have 2 more money prizes of $25.00 each. Go to the sisters and buy some tickets -- 3 for $1.

Lillie Spies isn't asking for much just PASTRY and HELP; she is in charge of the pastry for June 5th.

President Kathy thanked the cooks for May. President Kathy gives a door prize every meeting, and it was won by Martha Walla. Then we had the Calcutta Game, and it was split between Juanita Simons and Josephine Buri, and Helen Hegwood won a beautiful pillow made and donated by Ima Lero.

Our birthday celebrants were Willie Mae Stang, Agnes Pederson, Josephine Buri and an honorary member Helen Valcik, who is in the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II. Our cooks for June are Mary Ehrett, Delores Condon and Bessie Dewer cooking for Birdie Pech.

We will have a covered dish in July.

Dear Members and Friends: Jo Prochaska, our president, opened our meeting with 30 members and 2 guests, Jewel Clark and Larry Howery, present and they were made welcome.

She led the group to the Pledge of Allegiance.

Our, secretary, Merel Kovar read the minutes of our April meeting and they were approved as read. Merel read a note of thanks from the Homer Johnston family.

Our, treasurer, Lydia Alholm gave a good report and it was approved as read.

Our hostess chairman, Billie Starr, named Millie Bell, Elma Andersen and Ima Lou La Plant as our June hostesses. Billie will check on a place for us to go out and eat for the July 6 meeting. She will give us a report at the meeting.

We were sorry to hear Billie Starr's husband, Clayton, was beaten during a robbery in their home. We wish him a speedy recovery.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Camille Bolcer. Her husband, Edward, passed away Saturday (the 14th). He had been ill for quite some time. May he rest in eternal peace.

I misunderstood; the door prize for our April meeting was brought by Mary Dunlap not for Ima Lou La Plant who was out ill. Ima Lou did bring the door prize for our May meeting, a beautiful ceramic basket she brought from Mexico and Carrie Milan was the lucky winner. Elma Andersen will bring the June meeting door prize.

"Happy Birthday" to Mrs. Frances Tirk she will be 88 and going strong, Mary Dunlap, Anna Johnson, Mollie Sladovnik and Andy Sustala. May you all have many more.

CESAT Executive Meeting In Taylor April 9, 1988 The Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas (CESAT) held a meeting of association executives on Saturday, April 9, 1988 in a meeting room of SPJST Lodge No. 29 in Taylor, Texas.

Calvin Chervenka, president, welcomed visitors and members of former University of Texas classes who were invited for a reunion of "old timers arranged by Viola Doenges of Houston.

This call for UT Czech students of WWII days brought out Mr. and Mrs. Anton Fojt of Wichita Falls, Mr. Vince Taylor, Mr. Harry R. Barton and Mr. Jesse Skrivanek, all from Austin; also Mr. and Mrs. Herbert G. Culp, Jr. of Abilene and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Doenges of Houston. This UT alumni group enjoyed the day of reunion with former classmates and also enjoyed the program presented by the UT Club in the afternoon.

Roger Kolar, CESAT vice president and also Council of Higher Education chairman, commented on the $3,000.00 scholarship which CESAT awarded to Andrew Drozd, a graduate student at UT who will complete his

Wednesday, May 25, 1988—VESTNIK/11 studies for a Masters degree in Slavic studies in May. Mr. Drozd will use part of his scholarship award to attend the Czech language summer course at Charles University, Prague and will stay in Czechoslovakia another year to participate in the graduate study program offered by the Czechoslovak government in the Cultural Exchange Program with the USA. Mr. Kolar reviewed this program and, after some discussion, the officers of CESAT and TCHE agreed that CESAT/TCHE would accept the invitation by the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute to recommend students for this scholarship program of study at Czechoslovak universities.

President Chervenka also commented on the new cultural exchange program between the CSSR and the USA and the special offer of three scholarships reserved this year for Texas students. He pointed out the fact that if these scholarships for full time study in the CSSR in the 1988 - 89 year are not taken up by Texas students, they will be given to students of other countries.

Mr. Chervenka also mentioned the Czech language summer course at Charles University, Prague which will be held during the month of July this year. Charles Heyda, publicity director for CESAT is in charge of organizing the group of 25 Czech language students who will leave July 4 for study in this program.

In a discussion of the status of the student loan program, Mr. Marvin Marek was commended for his perseverance in clearing up delinquent loans and in bringing the whole program up - to - date.

The Executive Committee approved a $2,000.00 scholarship to be awarded from the Micek Scholarship Fund. For more information regarding this scholarship, students should write to: Professor Clinton A. Machann, 1029 Walton Drive, College Station, Texas 77840.

A decision was made by the officers of TCHE to provide a grant for the collection of early Czech related thesis at the University of Texas and Texas A&M University which would be put into book form and made available for publication.

The annual joint meeting of CESAT and TCHE is scheduled for June 4, 1988. Location to be announced later. All members are urged to attend this meeting which will include the nomination and election of officers for the 1988-1989 year.

Features SPJST Insurance Committee Cecil H. Dickson Insurance Committee Member Cecil H. Dickson represents District I. Born in DeQueen, Arkansas, he served 4 3/4 years as flying officer in World War II. A graduate of DeQueen, Arkansas High School, he pursued his higher education by achieving a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University in Physical Chemistry/Chemical Engineering; a masters degree also from Texas A&M University in Physical Chemistry/Mathematics, and lacks six hours of completing a PhD in Chemical/Engineering.

Cecil is an SPJST member for 27 years at Lodge No. 94 in Wheelock, where he served in the listed positions: Secretary, Building Committee and Finance Committee.

On the district level Cecil held numerous positions, namely, secretary, first vice president and second vice president in District I. Meanwhile he is credited attending six SPJST Conventions, serving as delegate and on the SPJST Insurance

Committee from 1964 through 1972 and has been representing District I SPJST Insurance Committee ever since that time.

Cecil was employed with Texas A&M University in 1947 where he was engaged in numerous research projects, represented State/Federal Governments as expert witness for internal of 9 years in law suits until 1982. Meanwhile, he taught Physical/Analytical Chemistry from 1947 to 1962. From 1963 to 1965, he worked on loan basis to Federal Government from Texas A&M to construct laboratory and helped develop courses in Chemistry and Physics in Mymensingh, East Pakistan. In addition to his employment, from 1974 to 1982, Cecil was a director of two Chemical Engineering courses on the junior/senior level. He also supervised twenty graduate assistant teachers.

According to Cecil's former employment positions, he is known as a very "energetic" individual, where he still finds time to maintain interest in clubs and organizations; such as being a member of the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, served three years on Board of Directors as secretary for Wixon Water Corporation and also is a member of Texas Independent Cattleman's Association.

Melvin Skrabanek Born in New Tabor, near Caldwell in Burleson County, Texas to the late Henry J. Skrabanek and Albina Kachtik Skrabanek, Melvin Skrabanek represents District I Publication Committee.

A 1940 graduate of Caldwell High School, Melvin pursued his higher education at University of Texas in Austin where he majored in Slavonic Languages and received his degree in 1950. In his senior year (1949 - 50), at UT, he was president of the Czech Club during Dr. Eduard Micek's tenure.

Being from the SPJST cradle region and his lodge being among one of the first 25 Charter Lodges of the SPJST, Melvin holds an outstanding record at New Tabor Lodge No. 17 serving his local lodge as secretary since 1951, continues to be a very productive sales representative, and is past District I organizer. In the 1960s, he served as district president who is also credited for serving as Publication Committee secretary for 12 years, which he presently serves.

On the convention level, records indicate Melvin has served in very efficient capacities, beginning with his first convention in 1960 at which time he was elected to represent District I Publication Committee. In 1964 he was chairman of Salaries/Donations Committee, was appointed recording secretary for 3 conventions. He also served 4 years on the Operations and Analysis (O&A) Committee.

Before entering the armed forces, Melvin helped build B - 24s at Consolidated - Vulter Aircraft Company in San Diego, California from 1941 to 1944. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry, 7th Division from 1944 to 1946. During his active service duty, he served in the Pacific and participated in the battles of LEYTE and OKINAWA. He honorably holds the distinguished citations: Bronze Star, 2 Purple Hearts, and the Infantryman's Combat Badge.

Prior to his retirement 28 February 1987, Melvin worked for the Texas Department of Human Resources based in Caldwell as an eligibility worker No. II for 36 years. Presently, he enjoys living on a farm raising cattle near New Tabor.

Besides holding an active membership in SPJST, Melvin is a member of Caldwell Lions Club since 1951. He served as secretary, president of the club, and zone chairman and deputy district governor of Lions District 253. He is also a past commander of American Legion Post 451, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

Melvin's membership also keeps him active at the New Tabor Brethren Church where he is an elder, plus serves his church as secretary, is a member of Men's Brotherhood and president of local Mutual Aid Society, is state treasurer of Mutual Aid Society of the Unity of the Brotherhood.

Effective 1 January 1966, Melvin was elected to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Board of Directors and is serving in his 23rd year as secretary of the Board.

Besides all his other activities and participation, Melvin's favorite interest was in the football sports' competition where he served as a football official referee in the SFOA (Southern Football Officials Association) for 25 years. During his long years of service, he refereed one State Championship, also refereed the final game of North - South High School All Star game played in 1981 at Texas Stadium in Arlington.

Lillian Holubec

SPJST Finance Committee Finance Committee Member Lillian Holubec represents District IV. She and her husband have four children.

Lillian has been a member of the SPJST for 50 years. She is a sales manager for H&R Block Income Tax Service.

Lillian is a member of Lodge 160 and has held the office of financial secretary for 10 years. She has been a sales representative for the SPJST for 20 years. In addition, she has attended 3 SPJST and 2 RVOS conventions and has served on the Finance Committee for the SPJST for 8 years.

In the area of employment, Lillian has worked for 10 years buying and selling implement, combine and truck parts. She has also been a shoe manager for 5 years.

In her church, she serves as treasurer for the Altar Society and has taught Catechism for several years.
