TEN MISTAKES OF LIFE To set up your own standard of right and wrong and expect everybody to conform to it.

To try to measure the enjoyment of others by our own.

To expect uniformity of opinion in this world.

To look for judgment and experience in youth.

To endeavor to mold a disposition alike.

Not to yield to unimportant trifles.

To look for perfection in our own actions.

To worry ourselves and others about what cannot be remedied.

To believe only what our finite minds can grasp.

To live as if the moment, the time, the day were so important that it would live forever. *** Corrections -In last week's editorial, page 2, columnn 2, third paragraph, there was a mistake made -- it should have read: Martha Trcalek of Lodge 17 [first place for her first year of million dollar sales) and Susan Skrabanek, two consecutive years in million dollar sales.

Skrabanek *** CEFT MEETING NOTICE There will a CEFT officers' and directors' meeting Saturday, April 30th at 10 a.m. at SPJST Lodge No. 186 in Caldwell. Please take note of this meeting and be present.

Marvin Mar ek CEFT Secretary *** The District III spring meeting, held April 10 in Dallas at Lodge Pokrok No. 84 was well attended, admirably conducted by District III President Richard Burney, and thoughtfully arranged by the Executive Board to bring out numerous reports and some pre - convention topics.

This being convention year, the committee chairmen presented their portions pertaining to various new by making recommendations: law insurance sales' changes more appealing, improving the quality of better paper for our official creating more publication, participation in youth activities, etc.

Director Sid Pokladnik spoke on insurance sales and recognized Sales Representatives Larry Laznovsky of Lodge 135, Norma Alford and Emil Petr, both of Lodge 84, among the top producers for 1987 in District III. He also touched on the new proposals, especially the one pertaining to also having an extra outside appraiser when appraising property which would be too costly to our Society. Brother Pokladnik noted that careful appraisal and consideration is given before approving loans and that there had been few properties foreclosed thus far in SPJST since his tenure as district director.

Referring to S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, Director Pokladnik mentioned that the homes in Taylor

and Needville were in good condition and that the homes must continually comply with the state's inspection and reported on the number of occupants each home has at present.

Brother Pokladnik also mentioned that the officers had made an effort, to procure insurance for the directors but it was too costly and the proposal was tabled, and he announced he would like to continue being director for District III. Supreme Lodge Secretary. Treasurer Leonard Mikeska touched on some of the highlights of our Society's business in his department and answered questions in reference to convention lodging, etc.

During lunch break members and guests were entertained by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Brother Pokladnik.

The remaining meeting agenda became very much alive when the youth members of Lodge 84 presented their "April Showers" show which was under the supervisiori of DYC Bessie Petr. Additional entertainment included dance numbers and a medley of numbers played on the violin by Adam Faraizl (a professional actor who is credited with being in three movies, one which will be aired on ABC in the fall), and a Spring Fever at the Founding of Lodge No. 84 skit by the teenagers. It was good to hear DYC Bessie Petr state that they had many volunteers among the youth for their program. Congratulations!

SPJST 50 - year members were recognized and Brother Charlie Petr of Lodge 130 was the only recipient present.

Moreover, one thing was noticeable --- there were twelve lodges out of nineteen represented at the meeting, which indicated that the members still care about their "fraternal lodge system."

It was announced that Lodge No. 66 (Linden Hall) in Elm Mott will host the District III Youth Achievement Day, June 26; and representatives from Ennis Lodge No. 25 volunteered to host District III fall meeting in conjunction with a volleyball and horseshoe tournament, also a cake baking and quilt contest will take place preferably during the last Sunday in October, therefore, members of all ages have something to work on and look forward to in the fall.

Overall, one could say that District III had another productive meeting, and our thanks are expressed to Lodge 84 for being generous hosts who prepared a delicious meal and the ladies provided sweets galore. *** Attention Lodge Members!

The editor will be needing your lodge's history from June 1984 through May 1988 for the SPJST Convention special issue as soon as possible. The deadline is set for June 1st, and we ask for your cooperation for the information listed below: 1. Lodge number and date of charter.

2. Total membership.

3. Total and names of 50 - year members.

4. Total names and members who outlived their life insurance policy by attaining age 96.

5. Approximate total contributions to charities.

6. Names of sales representatives and their achievements; if applicable and total of insurance written within the 4 - year period.

7. Did you honor a member for his/her achievement other than insurance sales; give name, award title and year.

If someone pointed to a brick wall and asked you which brick is the most important you would consider his question somewhat queer. Bricks are small things. But taken together they make a strong wall Much may tower upward many stories. Each brick is important in its support of many tons of weight above it. Our jobs, our lives, even our membership in the SPJST are like that. We sometimes feel that our personal work or our personal interest in the home lodge or the entire SPJST are not important. Sometimes we envy those who are leaders, who do greater things. We even let ourselves down mentally and emotionally, and fall into a pessimistic pattern of thinking, "What's the use. Others are running things to their liking and it doesn't make much difference anyway, for I am just nobody, I can't do much."

Brother and Sisters: There is a lot more to my membership in the SPJST than just belong to it and getting by.

Personal responsibility is one of the important bricks which support the great wall which we call everyday life.

The individual members of any lodge, and the individual lodges of any fraternal organization constitute a tremendous socializing force, bringing individual members together, for association in some mutual and common interest. The lodges composed of individual members wield a powerful influence in spreading the ideals of benevolence, humanity, brotherhood, plus patriotism and education.

It is so true that no nation is so strong or so rich that it will remain

healthy and prosperous if its citizens lose their sense of personal individual responsibility. Likewise, no lodge can grow and prosper if its members feel indifferent, unimportant, belittling themselves in their own appraisal. In our SPJST, in our communities and in our country, what you and I -do as individuals, how you and I feel as individuals, are'very important. Each member is important to make our organization strong. If each of us does our part and support, with feeling of belonging, with spirit of brotherhood, with understanding that no one owes us an easy living, with determination to play our part in our lodges; in our communities, in our nation, nothing can stop us from, growing. For survival and success there is no substitute for self - reliance and for working in cooperation. ***

National Fraternal Congress Of America ar Fellow Fraternalist: As I have said many times, our Fraternal Insurance Counselors are at the heart of our organizations. It is for this reason that I support the continuing tradition of honoring them during the month of May. Our Fraternal Insurance Counselors must, in the course of their work, maintain the very highest of professional standards and knowledge so they may provide the best information on the products available from our fraternal life insurance societies. They must be successful for our organizations to be successful.

They must encourage and foster the kind of fraternal programs and activities that have made us the strong contributors to society that we are In keeping with this, I am proclaiming May 1988 as "Fraternal Insurance Counselor Month." I strongly

encourage you to use the enclosed proclamation in your publication. It would also be most appropriate to encourage news media coverage of this proclamation, whether tprough your office or through the office of a prominent local official. Our Fraternal Insurance Counselors deserve our gratitude and any attention we can provide for them. Obtaining news media coverage of this proclamation is one way of accomplishing this Thank you for your cooperation. Let's all work together to give our Fraternal Insurance Counselors the recognition they deserve.

Proclamation The month of May is usually the beginning of the year's festivals and we wish to remind our members Lodge Praha No 29 in Taylor will hold their annual May Fete May 1st with many activities for young and old (incidently Lodge 29 was probably the first lodge in SPJST to begin such an occasion).

Moreover, members will also have an opportunity to celebrate the Ennis Polka Festival and Rosenberg Czech Fest, both being held during May 7th and 8th Mother's Day weekend which would be a nice treat for mothers to attend and where you will find many SPJST members involved at all three events. Don't miss them!

Scholarship Program For SPJST Members

Application may be made during the high school senior year. Scholarships will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school, or its equivalent.

College undergraduates may apply for a scholarship for the next school year.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE Applicants must be qualified members of the SPJST. Qualified members are those having an active SPJST insurance certificate in force. The certificate must be in force one year at the time of application to be considered.

SELECTION OF ACCREDITED COLLEGE AND DEGREE Scholarship winners may attend any college that has programs leading to a Bachelor's Degree in the United States of America accredited by a recognized

accrediting body. Negotiations for admission must be conducted entirely by the scholarship applicant.

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS The SPJST will award scholarships in the Freshman and Undergraduate Programs in the amount of $500. You can only be a recipient of ONE SPJST Scholarship, however,if you are unsuccesful in your initial application you may reapply the following school years or until you are a recipient. ***

23 To Hold Sale For Worthy Cause Lodge

Dear Members: Lodge No. 17 held its regular monthly meeting with two officers absent; they were Treasurer Stanley Mrnustik and Vice President Sheila Hildebrand. Bud Petty was appointed to fill the vice president's slot for the day.

Resolutions of Sympathy were read for deceased members Penny Lewis, Joe Havel, Jr., Amelia Karosek and Frank B. Hanacek.

We, Lodge No. 17 New Tabor members, would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy to their family and loved ones.

Bud Petty reported on the outcome of the Triathelon -- First Place - Lydia Odstrcil, second - Gladys Hejl and third - Carol Petty.

Susan Skrabanek asked our lodge to send in a by - law to purchase land for recreational purposes to serve the whole membership.

Susan also reported that the youth club would like to have the floor refinished for the mother lodge and they are checking intothis matter.

Melvin Skrabanek asked the lodge to send a change in the by - law Article 91 to change the $2000 to $4000.

The 50 - year pins will be awarded on June 5th. We will have a reception for the recipients.

Hardship Cases To Finance Committee For 1988 Submit

Dear Brothers and Sisters: We are preparing for the 1988 Convention to be held in Temple on June 19, 1988 and, as in the past, the convention has provided assistance to members of the SPJST Society who were judged as hardship cases. We would like to continue this policy at the June Convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his/her name to the local lodge officers who, in turn, will review the case.

2. The application must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

3. The application must explain why he/she needs assistance.

4. There is no age limit for the member who needs assistance.

Dear Members: Lodge No. 15 regular meeting was opened by President Leslie Sakewitz leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a minute of silence for our deceased members. Standy Svetlik and A.D. Voyles. May they rest in peace.

Brother Leslie welcomed our guests, Lillie Zajicek and Thomas Harwell.

On the sick list were Anton Svetlik, Ed and Sidonia Svoboda. I hope all of you are feeling a lot better by now.

Lodge No. 24, Cyclone The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 24 was held April 5 at 7:30 p.m. We were happy to see two visitors at our meeting -- Adeline and Willie E. Kohutek. Come join us again!

We have several members who are on the sick list this month, namely, Franklin Martinec, Albert Cabla, Eugene Haisler who is recovering from cataract surgery, and John Paul Chervenka required stitches when he cut his finger while playing basketball.

We wish all of these members a very speedy recovery.

Mr. William J. "Bill" Luksa of the Red Ranger community died April 12, 1988 after a short illness. Mr. Luska will be missed very much by our community. Our deepest sympathy to his family.

Special days this month for special people are: Birthdays -- Mark Macek (April 2), David Macek (April 6), Janet Macek (April 17), LaVerne Cabla (April 28) Anniversary -- Willie E. and Adeline Kohutek on April 19th.

Barbara Macek reported that, at the last meeting, they decided that any lodge cancellations (dances, meetings, bingo) would be posted on the front door in addition to any other notices to let the public know why a function was canceled.

Many THANKS to JERRY ZAVODNY for the repair work he did this month to water leaks at the lodge again. We really appreciate it, Jerry.

Billy Smetanka/Johnny Chervenka and Mike Carpenter/Johnnie Svoboda were the two teams representing us at the State Straight Domino Tournament held at B tckholts on March 19th. Thanks, guys, for a job well done and for representing Flag Hall at this tournament.

On March 18, the "42" Domino Playoffs were held at Flag Hall. There were about 10 teams competing against each other. Winners at the playoffs who will represent us at the State Tournament were: First Place -- Larry Posvar and Wesley Plumlee, Second Place -- Johnny Chervenka and Billy Smetanka. These two teams competed at the State Tournament held April 9 here at Flag Hall. Good luck was wished to our players.

Thanks to LaVerne Cabla, Arlene Tschoerner, and Linda Smetanka for the refreshments they served to the domino players at the playoffs on March 18th. Also, our lodge voted to give a thank you check to the two domino playoff judges, Willie E. Kohutek and Warren Hillman. Many thanks to these two gentlemen.

Once again, our hard - working Bingo Committee and members are in a position to give a contribution to a worthy cause from the proceeds of bingo earnings. The membership voted to give $100 each to the East Bell County Youth Boosters and Public Television Channel 46.

Congratulations to the 'Bingo Committee and all members who have helped with Bingo. Thanks for a job well done.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday , April 27, 1988 Congratulations to Charlie and Shirley Waits who won a trip to Las Vegas in March as a result of the large amount of SPJST insurance Charlie has sold. Thanks for your hard work, Charlie, and we wish you many more trips in the future.

Nineteen members from Flag Hall attended the District II meeting at Star Hall on March 27th. Everyone said it was a very good meeting and we're glad these nineteen members represented us at this meeting.

Congratulations to Patsy Koslovsky of Lodge 47 who was elected District II Assistant Youth Counselor.

Door prizes were won by Bernice Sebek and Joe Haisler.

Dear Members: Lodge Karel Jones will convene its May monthly meeting upstairs in the hall on Sunday (the 1st) at 2 p.m. The "Order of Business" as stated in Article 56 of the By - laws will be followed with the usual exceptions. A report on the District VI spring meeting will be on the agenda along with the regular reports and other minor reports. A special door prize for Mother's Day will be given.

After the meeting, there will be a fraternal gathering with luncheon.

The April monthly meeting was moved to the 10th because of Easter.

Being primarily a report meeting with no pending business needing attention, the meeting was short. The quorum, present, accepted all reports as given.

Sister Helen Kelner won the door prize.

A major portion present for the business meeting stayed for the luncheon. Sisters Hanzelka, Kortis, Brdecka, Helen Kelner and Nezval along with Brothers Lupik and "Tony" Kelner donated enough food and liquid refreshments to make the buffet table look full. The lodge furnished lunch meat and bread to make sandwiches along with some of the liquid refreshments.

With Sisters Hanzelka and Kortis pulling KP in the kitchen and being assisted by Sister Helen Kelner, the clean - up went fast. Assisting Sister Nezval, Brothers Lupik, "Tony" Kelner and Anthony Kelner took care of the sweep up, clean off, etc. in the hall.

Thank you troops for your "Yoeman Service;" without your help and assistance, it would be "a hard row to hoe."

88, Houston News

Johnny and Clara Broz, who are very active at Lodge 88, spent a week March 27 through April 3 at their Condo on Lake Hamilton at Hot Springs, Arkansas playing the ponies at Oaklawn. 'Clara said it was so much fun and so beautiful; although some unusual things happened at the races.

One horse that was in the race dropped dead, and one of the jockeys fell off the horse after it left the gates.

I asked Clara "What did the horse do then? She said it kept racing without a jockey. Their son, John with a friend, also spent a few days with them, which added to their enjoyment.

King B. and Helen Hegwood went to Austin a few days ago to see their two sons, Vincent and Vernon, play hard ball in a tournament, which was held at the University of Texas. They enjoyed spending the weekend with their boys.

At our monthly meeting on April 11, 1988, our Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox announced that our dances for the first 3 months of this year have been well attended, and also that we have security at all dances, which is working very well. Two fine gentlemen of the Entertainment Committee Mike Trefell and Larry Johnson, are out of circulation at present with heart conditions. Harley said the other thembers will pick up the "slack," until they are back, and that's so important when we help each other.

Keep this in mind; we all need help at some time in our lives.

As I was looking through my papers from surrounding towns, I came upon a write - up about this gracious lady, Mrs. Albina Hilsher, the mother of 5 surviving children out of 8. The children brought her a big cake for her 95th birthday; and they were Elenora and Herbert Lange, John and Palmae Hilsher, Josephine and Leander Pflughaupt, Gladys and Warren Havemann, and Ruth and Robert Martinak. Three sons are deceased, Alfred, Charlie (a twin to John), and Harold. She has 23 grandchildren and 52 great - grandchildren. After all her children were raised, she spent many hours gardening and canning (for my children) she'd always say. She and Mr. Hilsher always opened their home to anyone who wanted to visit with them. I, myself, always enjoyed her homemade cheese. She is a person to remember!

President Jerry Ermis already announced our annual Splash Day and Homecoming on June 5, 1988. This is a treat for all our members. Believe me, it'll be a big day, and lots of work for many, but work has never killed anybody. There will be a great deal of activity taking place; for one, the swimming pool will open the day before and Karl Lindemann announced that there will be a new purifier, instead of Clorine, which is a much safer device.

Tim Kostom, chairman of the Building Committee, then informed everyone step - by - step as to what the plans are for a new building on the area where the old barbecue house was. It was a great help to all of us who are interested in what's going on.

In the absence of chairman of the Board Bobby Miksch and Vice Chairman Royal Warnasch, the Board report was given by Viola Cox, and it was a very good report, stating all the worthwhile things the Board does.

The Blue Room Party on April 10 was a big success. Margaret Allbritton announced that she and Assistant A.J. Stayton are thanking all who helped, and there were quite a few who did.

They are already planning another one, possibly in July.

President Rose Sicner of the Hlahol Dramatic Club regretfully announced that the Czech Play had to be postponed due to our main character, a Number One comedian, Jan Schroif, got seriously ill, was hospitalized and had surgery Sunday morning, April 10, 1988. She was happy to report that the surgery went well and he'd soon be well again. The play will be presented later.

The Raymonds, Alvin and Janet, were saddened this week when their brother - in - law Nick Costa passed away. His wife is Janet's sister. The Raymonds are active Lodge 88 members.

Mildred Holeman's husband, Billy Jack, has had a triple by - pass. He's had a bad time, but we do hope you'll soon be good as new!

Lillie Spies' niece, Eileen Shelander had surgery, but is recovering nicely.

Ruby Cernosek, a longtime member, had a stroke and is now at the Heritage Center at Winter Haven in Houston.

CMAJDALKAisn'tthe most common household word such as Mom's Apple Pie, no it isn't known around all households but those 162 households that received benefits from the man who bears this name will soon be wearing eye glasses that weren't within financial reach. Of course, these used eye glasses will need to be fitted by prescription to suit each individual's need.

I'm sure that you know by now who this good Samaritan is - Arnold Cmajdalka.

When I asked Arnold how in the world was he able to accumulate so many used eye glasses, he merely replied: "Well, Homer, it isn't really from this world."

Well, I began to think that may be this man had some direct line to Saint Peter so I asked him point blank as to his heavenly aspirations.

"Not that at all," said Arnold.

"I merely asked our pastor if I could put a notice in our church bulletin and, after that, all I had to do was to start counting eye glasses --it seemed as if they would never stop coming."

Now isn't that ingenuity? But that merely shows the interest that our people at Lodge No. 88 show when we get a project to help others.

Other recent members who have so generously given eye glasses are: Benny and Marie Fajkus Marilyn Jaksch Lil Holley Marie Stayton Viola Allen When the eye glass program for the needy began in August 1986, a goal of 500 pairs was set thinking that if a large goal was set that it would be a challenge to all members.

Well, the challenge was met with great enthusiasm and the goal was reached by January 1988 -- when I heard some members say that we should do better than that it was decided that a new goal, this time the humongous figure of 1,000 pairs, would never be met but would be something to think about.

Well, they all are thinking and doing something about it. In fact, members are taking to it like ducks to water and some are even saying that this is really duck soup.

The total pairs collected and delivered to THE LIGHTHOUSE of Houston by your Fraternal Activities Coordinator now total 796 pairs.

Isn't that great? You all keep up the good work, you hear!

Our meeting of April 10, 1988 was well attended but, as usual, more members should take part in the lodge activities. Being a lodge that most of us. have been members of since a very early age, our parents paid for the insurance. I am sure they had in mind that we should keep the lodge as they had done. I am sure many members do belong to other organizations, but where could one go on a Sunday afternoon and help take care of the lodge business and then later have a wonderful meal and drinks that the lodge pays for? Our lodge does thank all the ladies who bring pastries to enjoy after the main meal. This time Brother and Sister Kenneth Krivanek and Brother and Sister Frankie Tesar prepared a good feast of cornish hens and rice and a very good salad. At each meeting, a pair of members volunteer to serve the next meal. It is always a surprise as to what it will be.

We did miss some regular members at the meeting but, again, some who have missed a few were present, such as Brother Alfred Svacek, Brother and Sister Clem. Oujesky.

Brother Louis Kubala is doing real well after a little sickness and we hope he will be back at the Tarok game again. We need to stay in practice; I have heard that we will go after one of the trophies that the other lodges have now. I did make a mistake in mentioning the dates we play Tarok, Poker and other games. Please notice that it is always the first and third Tuesday of each month and starting at 6:30 p.m. Come play and enjoy being with the members who want to show you a good time.

We did wish and sing "Happy Birthday" to the ones who had April birthdays and were present; namely, Sisters Martha Durham, Joyce Tesar and Clem Oujesky who had birthdays in March.

Our Sunshine Chairperson sends birthday cards to members over 65 and they enjoy getting cards and are glad they are still being remembered. April birthdays were Right Rev. William Botik, Anton Pall, Arnold Paynor, Leslie Ruzicka, Lydia Alholm, Sophie Blazek, Pauline Chaloupka, Helen Kratky, Clara Kunesh, Gladys Povolny and Minnie Ruzicka. A get well card went to Evelyn Zacek.

Congratulations to Karen Goodall, getting married April 23, 1988, the daughter of Pauline and Jim McMurry and grandparents are Henry and Annie Langer. The Langers are in a rest home in. Weatherford, Texas and would like company to come visit them; Henry played the accordian for our singing group. Dan and Joella Kubala had a wedding anniversary. Sister Mildred Trojacek passed away March 28, 1988 and Standy Svetlik of Buckholts, sister of Minnie and Ella Praslicka, passed away recently. We extend our sympathy to their families.

We were glad to see Sister Mary Motl receive her 50 - year pin in person. The president presented the 50 - year pin to her. We did have several others who received 50 - year pins but they were mailed to them; namely, Henry Abbott, Louis Bonelli, Lillian Cooper, Milan Davis, Annie Mae George, Juanita Johnnie, Betty Martinek, Steve Matusevich, Mary Myers, Helen Oujesky, Donald Powers and Helen Robinette plus Vlasta Dolkos; her pin was presented to her in the , nursing home by Carl W. and Christine Zich. Plans for the remodeling are about ready and construction will come soon and everyone is getting excited. It will be an improvement to the bar and kitchen area.

May is close and Mother's Day is on our meeting, date. It was decided not to change the meeting date so we hope you mothers will attend as usual.

I want to wish all the mothers everywhere a very happy Mother's Day and may it be the best ever.

Lodge No. 139 Danbury Report On April 13. Danbury Lodge No. 139 held a brief meeting at the fire station with Secretary Tommie Lostak presiding. After the minutes were read Financial Secretary Helen Filipp and Treasurer Lonnie Lostak gave their reports.

Correspondence received since the last meeting was read by Tommie Lostak.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the members adjourned to the home of Tommie and Gladys Lostak for a social.

Our i egular monthly meeting was called to order. on Sunday, April 10, 1988 at 2:05 p.m. by President Dennis Hermis.

We had 33 adult members and 3 visitors who signed the register book.

All stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers, all were present except Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis and Flag Bearer Amanda Hermis. Then the secretary read the minutes from our previous meeting which stood approved as read. There was no correspondence.

Brother Sidon Tumis read the financial secretary/treasurer report.

Bar and Board reports were read by Rosie Schilhab.

The Sick Committee reported that Emilie Harnala and Erna Febrle were ander the weather. We hope both of these ladies are feeling much better at this time.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Tuesday night, April 12 we opened play in our Fast - Pitch City Major League. We played the very strong Trans - Con Team and unfortunately, e dropped a 3 to 0 verdict. They scored 3 runs, even though Lionel Schulz pitched a very good game. He allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts and all 3 runs were unearned. It was a very good ballgame.

Offensively, Tommy Yates had 2 singles, Paul Bartos had a single and a sacrifice, Danny Yates also had a single and Mike Funk, a sacrifice and a walk. We just couldn't score any runs.

Our second league game was played Tuesday night, April 19 against the Oak Cliff Saints Team and we overwhelmed them by a score of 12 to 1. We had 10 hits, 3 walks and 2 sacrifice hits as our bats came alive.

Offensively, Paul Bartos had 2 doubles, Roger Little had a double, single and a walk, Mike Funk had a double and a single, Clyde Wilsey had a double, a walk and a sacrifice, Donnie Lennox had 2 singles and a walk, Danny Yates, a walk, Dan Palm, a double and Randy Christian, a double.

Tommy Yates was the winning pitcher allowing no hits, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Randy Furlow, in relief, allowed 1 hit, 3 walks and 2 strikeouts.

We had a nice turnout of wives and/or girl friends and some fans. We invite you to come out to the games when you can.

Our next game was played Tuesday, April 26 at 6:45 p.m. against Gilmer Transportation; another game will be played Tuesday, May 3 at 6:45 p.m. against Campbell's Insurance and Tuesday, May 10 at 9:35 p.m. against Charlie's.

Here is just a reminder, that Saturday night, May 21 our annual Softball Team Benefit Dance at 2625 Floyd Street at Lodge No. 84, will be held. This is a fund - raiser; we need your help and your support. Please come to the dance and bring your friends. Music and dancing to the popular Czech Harveters orchestra, will be enjoyable.

May I just say here that the SPJST District III meeting held at Lodge 84, Dallas this past Sunday, April 17 was really a good meeting; one of the best

in several years, well attended, good program, good food and many interesting items were discussed. It was really gratifying to see the interest displayed by all present. This was truly a fraternal meeting. I urge all members of Lodge No 84 to please support your lodge functions and dances because we need your presence and your help.

ST— Lodge 88 Birthday Club News

The Birthday Club Sisters met on April 13, 1988, in the dining room of Lodge 88 at 11:15 a.m. for their monthly meeting and luncheon.

President Kathy Trefell opened the meeting with the roll call of members.

Secretary Rosalee Kostom read the minutes of our March meeting, which were accepted as read.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report as of April 1, 1988. It was a good report for the first quarter of the year.

We had no report from the Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut, who is in the hospital at this time.

First of all, we are so elated that our Ticket Chairman Evelyn Mikolas is back with us. She declares she doesn't ever want the "shingles " again.

Clara Jecmenek, who is one of our faithful sisters, will enter the Heights Hospital on April 13 with a painful pinched nerve. We wish you well.

Rosalee Kostom had eye surgery and recovered so quickly, that hardly anyone knew about it.

We lost an honorary member of our club, Mrs. Albina Drawe, 93 years of age, Saturday, April 9, 1988. She was a member of Lodge 88 for many years, and she and her late husband were caretakers many years ago. President Kathy had a silent pray er for her today.

President Tref ell introduced Juanita Semon, a retired nurse, as a visitor and she will join our club in the May meeting. Welcome, Juanita!

Our drawing for Splash Day and Homecoming is underway, with Ardith McClellan and Martha Baxter in charge. We have some nice prizes -a $100 bill framed and a beautiful Czech doll donated by Sister Mary Johnson and we hope to have more valuable prizes. As soon as I get the details I will let you know. The tickets are 3 for $1. We are confident that our many friends will help us. Tickets will be available every Thursday on Bingo night; do offer to help the ladies in charge.

The hostesses for April were Bessie Lero, chairman and a real conservative shopper, Martha Walla, Josephine Bishop and Alice Bily.

The hostesses for May are Betty Kulhanek, Rita Alexander, Willie Mae Ennis and Edna Froelich.

Lillian Finn won the gift that President Kathy donated.

The Calcutta gift was won by Martha Baxter and Ardith McClellan, Ima Lero won a bun warmer and Virginia'Hale won a set of coasters.

The birthday celebrities were Helen Hegwood, Rita Alexander, Clara Jecmenek, Lillie Spies, Della Kadlecek and Bessie Lero. "Happy Birthday" was sung and then President Trefell dismissed us with the table grace at 11:50 a.m.

Remember it's always good to keep in touch with those who are away to let them know they're thought about and loved from day to day.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting on April 6 was called to order by our President Jo Prochaska. She led us in the pledge to our flag.

We had 36 members and guests Mary Hale and Denise Rosenlund present. Our guests later joined our club and we welcomed them.

Our Secretary Merel Kovar read the minutes of our March meeting. They were approved as read and Merel got a big hand for the good job since this was her first report. Keep it up,Merel!

Our Treasurer Lydia Alholm gave us a good report and we plan on going out to eat soon.

Jennie Mason came in late and all shook up. A lady ran a red light and turned her car around several times.

We said a pray., er for her and she is better.

Sunshine Chairman Anna Johnson reported sending a Mass card to the family of Homer Johnston who passed away March 25, 1988 at age 93, and a sympathy card to Dolly McGill on the loss of her brother.

Homer was a longtime member and just recently he was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude Johnson. We extend our sincere sympathy to the families and may they rest in peace.

We missed Irna Lou La Plant who was ill. She sent her door prize with Mary Dunlap and Bessie 13rezina was the lucky winner. Elma Andersen will furnish the prize for our May meeting.

A Telephone Committee was elected, namely, Geneva Hennessey, Rose Mary Gribble and Mary Pavey.

Lydia and Roy Alholm had guests, Eleanor and Clinton Johnson from Minneapolis, Minnesota. We were sorry they had to leave the day before our meeting.

We extend our congratulations to Gary and Elma Andersen on their 18th anniversary. May they have many more.

Our May hostesses will be Carrie Milan, Jeanie Mason and Mary Pavey.

Our meeting adjourned with "Happy Birthday" to Alice Marley, Alene Kercho, Joyce Tesar and Lydia Alholm. Let's have many more!

Dear Readers, The end of the month year is approaching and will be here before we realize it. This is the time of the year for everyone to start thinking about and planning for YAD whether it is crafts or talents that you will be working on. Monday, April 4, 1988 in St. John's Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m.

Wednesday, April 6 at the Wall Brethren Church in Wall with Rev. Tommy Tallas, pastor, and Rev. John Baletka of Caldwell officiating. Burial was at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens, directed by Johnson's Funeral Home.

Emil Chasak was born October 12, 1912 in Williamson County to Joseph and Marie Chasak. He was married to Minnie Kotrla on March 20, 1935 in Granger. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed near Lowake until 1947 when they moved to Tom Green County and had made their home in the Wall area since that time.

He retired from farming in 1978. He was a member of the Wall Brethren Church where he served on the Board of Elders.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Albin, Adolph and Joe. He is survived by his wife, Minnie Chasak of San Angelo; one daughter and her husband, Nancy and Dewyan Weise of San Angelo; two grandsons, Dale Weise of College Station and Ricky Weise of San Angelo; one brother, Frank Chasak of San Angelo; one sister, Tilly Seipp of San Angelo and several nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers were Daniel Chasak, Fred Chasak, Gene Chasak, Jerry Jost, Tommy Chasak, Rex Chasak, Jimmy Machann, Erwin Machann, Raymond Kotrla, Clifton Kotrla, Eugene Kotrla, Johnnie McComb, III, Wayne Kotrla, Kenneth Kotrla, Larry Kotrla, Eddie Kotrla and E.D. Urban.

Of Sympathy The membership of Lodge No. 135, Ennis, Texas, expresses its heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister MARY BOUSKA, who passed away on April 7, 1988 in the Ennis Care Center at the age of 75.

Funeral services were held April 9 at graveside in the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Ennis with Rev. Larry Pichard officiating under the direction of the J.E. Keever Mortuary. Rosary was recited Friday, April 8, in the Keever Chapel.

Sister Bouska was born June 25, 1912 in Scurry, Texas, the daughter of Frank and Frances Kubin Kohn, Sr. As a small child she moved to Bardwell and attended Bardwell schools. On November 27, 1932, she married

Charlie A. Bouska of the Creechville community. After their marriage, they lived in the Creechville community on the family farm.

Sister Bouska was a member of SPJST Lodge 135 and was recognized as a 50 - year member last year, the Ennis Sewing Circle Club and St. John's Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Charlie A. Bouska; two sons, Charlie A. Bouska, Jr., of Ennis; five daughters, Ella M. Zmolek of Ferris, Mary Ann McBride of Dallas, Marjorie White of Missouri. City, Texas, Loraine Reeves of Richardson and Cynthia Reynolds of Dallas; 12 grandchildren; one sister, Velma Allison of Dallas; one brother, Jerry A. Kohn of Dallas. Three sisters, Frances Laznovsky, Mildred Wright and Vlasta Boldin; and one brother, Frank Kohn, Jr., preceded her in death.

May our departed sister rest in peace and may her memory live among us forever.

Arnold M. Vrla Finance Committee Member Arnold Vrla represents District III. He is a member of Lodge 130 and has been an

Arnold M. Vrla is married to Helen J. Vrla. They have been married 41 years and have a daughter, Kathy J. Pottkotter; a son, Danny E. Vrla; two granddaughters and one grandson.

After graduating from Draughons Business College, he was employed by Grahan Brown Shoe Company Austin Shoe Store in 1939. He served on the Board of Directors of both companies and served as secretary treasurer controller the last 20 years before retiring in 1971.

Arnold also has a real estate license with Irongate Realty, insurance license for Group I and hospitalization, insurance sales and adjustor's license.

Arnold's first endeavor with the SPJST was at Lodge 25, Ennis, where he first served as financial secretary.

After World War II, he transferred to Lodge Jaro No. 130, Dallas. There he held both the offices of president and financial secretary. He has served on various committees within the lodge and on the Board of Directors of Sokol Athletic Center in which Lodge 130 is a joint owner. Arnold also served as president of the Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council and American Czech Culture Society.

When District III was formed, he was elected the first District III treasurer. In 1957, SL Vice President Joe B. Hejny appointed Arnold the first District III organizer, and he served in that capacity for 121/2 years -increasing sales and the number of organizers. From 1957 up - to - date, Arnold is serving as secretary treasurer - appraiser - adjustor for Chapter No. 5, Dallas, for the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association.

This year marks the. 10th SPJST Convention that he has attended.

During this time, he has served on the By - Law Committee, Resolutions Committee, Salary and Donations Committee, and is currently serving his third term as Finance Committee chairman. The Finance Committee plays a very important role in the development and advancement of the SPJST as well as the other standing committees. Each one has its specific purpose. To quote Arnold: "I am very proud of all past and present members of my Finance Committee. Each member is well qualified to serve in that capacity with each meeting being most harmonious and very productive.

Fraternalism has been my life!" ***

Monta D. Foster Finance Committee Member Monta D. Foster represents District VII and is a member of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi. He retired from Central Power and Light Company in 1987 and currently is ranching on his property in the Yoakum area. Monta and his wife have one daughter and 3 granddaughters.

Monta graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in electrical engineering and is a registered professional engineer in the State of Texas.

He served in the Army infantry during World War II and is a.member of Post No. 364 Corpus Christi of the American Legion which is the third largest post in Texas. Monta has served as Post Commander as well as serving in other responsible positions in the post.

He is a member of Sokol Corpus Christi and has served as chairman of standing committees, vice president, president, and as chairman of the Board of Directors. Monta has also served as technical advisor for Del Mar College in Corpus Christi.

Monta was employed by Central Power and Light Company for 38 years where he was director of system operations. He was also responsible for the company's communications system. This responsibility was carried out with over 200 employees under his supervision. He was also responsible for determining employees' organizational requirements, salary levels and adjustments for these same employees.

Monta has been a sales representative and a member of the SPJST for over 25 years. He has served as local lodge secretary treasurer, vice president, president, and has served on many committees at the local lodge level. He was also co chairman of the SPJST Convention Committee of Lodge 79 that was responsible for hosting the 1984 Convention in Corpus Christi. Brother Foster's responsibilities at the district level include holding the position of District second vice president.

KBEC Radio Listeners Call Jodie Mikula Band The Best The Jodie Mikula Band of Ennis was recently chosen as the listeners' favorite on KBEC 1390 (Waxahachie) Polka Show. Mikula's band finished first in the polling.

The Polka Show, hosted by Ennis' Johnnie Krajca, is the only remaining polka show airing in the Metroplex which can be heard on KBEC from 9 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. every Sunday.

Krajca has hosted the show since May, 1964. It has run continously except for a brief period in 1973 - 74.

It was instrumental in helping establish the Polka Festival in Ennis.

The winning band, the Jodie Mikula Orchestra, was organized in 1967. It is one of the few family bands still performing in Texas.

The story of the Mikula Orchestra begins with the band's namesake, Jodie. He first picked up a button accordian at age 9. He is self - taught and later picked up more knowledge from his uncle, Frank Mikula.

Between the years 1939 and 1944, Mikula played in an informal "put together" band. The group dispersed during WWII. After the war, Mikula would pick up the accordian at every available opportunity.

His love of music sparked the musical interest of his oldest son, Kenneth.

At age 12, Kenneth began taking coronet lessons from a neighbor.

Nick, Jodie's middle son, decided that he too wanted to learn an

instrument. Mikula bought him a saxophone and soon the two sons were playing duets.

Andy, who sat on the sidelines and watched all this time, decided that he wanted to get into the act. He took up the bass horn.

Finally, Mrs. Mikula was called upon to play the drums.

Uncle Frank was called upon to play the accordian with Jodie. The band was formed.

Over the years, the original band has not changed much. John Graves started playing, bass. Mrs. Mikula retired, handing the sticks over to her youngest son, Andy.

Daniel Barto took over the rhythm responsibilities.

Uncle Frank retired due to the number of bookings.

It was during this time that James Zalkousky replaced Mr. Graves and Mr. Marasak.

In 1972, the Mikula Orchestra made its first recording. It has made six more since then.

As of this date, the band has retained five of the six members who played on the first album.

Minor changes occurred in the position of bass player. James Zalkousky played for five years. Larry Prda filled in for James. Two years later, James returned to bass playing.

In 1984, James announced he was leaving the group to start another band. At that point Frank Kubina took over for James.

At the present time the Jodie Mikula Band has Pat Zapletal playing piano.

Also, the Mikula's two grandsons, taking lessons from their daddy on trumpet, play from sheet music.

Bradley, age 7, and Keith, 11, sit in with the band for a few numbers now and then.

Throughout the years, the band has traveled throughout the state. They have performed at dances, festivals and special celebrations.

The support of fans and lovers of Czech music has made the band continue to strive for perfection.

Sunday, January 17, 1988, the number two band in the polling, the Lone Star Czechs, was recognized on the Sunday morning Polka Show.

Lone Star Czechs Runner-Up In Polka Band Contest The Lone Star Czechs of Ennis was chosen runner-up in the Polka Band competition hosted by KBEC 1390's Polka Show. The listeners voted for their favorite group.

The band is composed of David Trojacek, manager; Dennis Chmelar, sax; Tony Paulicek, accordian; Eric Trojacek, guitar and vocals; Chris Divin, bass and vocals and Glenn Skrionek, drums.

The group has been together since 1983 when it started playing locally, then spread out all over the state.

The group is diversified, playing other types of music in addition to polkas and waltzes.

When, asked about the group's plans, Trojacek said, "We're going to keep on doing what we're doing to try and please the people with our music."

The group plays in the Polka Festival each year and also during Czech Day at the State Fair.

The Polka Show, the last and remaining show of its kind in the Metroplex, is broadcast on KBEC

1390, Sunday mornings, 9 to 10:50 a.m., hosted by Johnnie Krajca of Ennis.

Award Winner The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Sheryl Danette Macha has been named a United States National Award winner in Foreign Language and English.

This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes less than 10 percent of all American high school students.

Sheryl Danette Macha, who attends Needville High School was nominated for this National Award by Mrs. Judith Reyes, Spanish teacher; and Ms. Barbara James, English teacher, at the school.

Sheryl Danette Macha will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, published nationally.

Sheryl is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Macha. The grandparents are Mr. Theodore Bednarek (deceased) and Mrs. Selma Bedarek of Needville and the late Mr. and Mrs. Anton Macha of Wallis, Texas.

Sheryl and her parents are members of Lodge No. 81, Needville.

Spring Festival Held At S.P.J.S T. Rest Home No. I Annual

The annual Spring Festival was held recently at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor where Howard Forister and Mary Kolinek, both residents of the home, were crowned "King and Queen" of the festival.

Mary Kolinek lived on Washburn Street prior to coming to live at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home on July 21, 1981. She was born in Williamson County on May 8, 1898. She and her husband farmed all of their life. She reads her Bible every day. Her parents were born in Czechoslovakia. She has two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Nelson of Taylor and Mrs. Esther Meiske of San Antonio; she also has one son, *Raymond Kolinek of Georgetown. She has 16 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren, and 1 great - great granddaughter.

Howard Forister was born in Hereford, Texas on August 16, 1907.

He came to live at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home October 26, 1987. He was in the Air Force from 1940 to 1943. He was a salesman for Ponca Wholesale Company for 38 years. He was an avid golfer and played every day after work. He and his wife lived in Waco, Texas for 33 years prior to moving to Taylor. His wife, Mrs. Mary Forister, still resides at 227 Dahlberg Blvd. in Taylor.

Mrs. Frances Schwenker, administrator, welcomed the guests and introduced the King and Queen.

The residents voted by secret ballot a week before. Pastor Felix Sager crowned the King and Queen and gave a short Easter devotional. His wife, Mrs. Louise Sager, leads the private devotionals each Wednesday morning for the patients at the rest home who are not able to leave their rooms.

A trio that included Mrs. Carolyn Jackson, Mrs. Lydia Burow and Mrs. Julia Johnson entertained all by singing three selections, "April Showers," "Easter Parade," and "Let Me Call You Sweetheart." Mrs. Karine Gilstrap provided pian-o background music for the models.
