There were 13 sales representatives in attendance at these workshops. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us.

It is the duty of the lodge and its members to support the sales representatives of your lodge and help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

Please urge the sales representatives of your lodge to attend the insurance seminars so that they can better serve your membership.

Submit Hardship

Cases To Finance Committee For 1988 Dear Brothers and Sisters: We are preparing for the 1988 Convention to be held in Temple on June 19, 1988 and, as in the past, the convention has provided assistance to members of the SPJST Society who were judged as hardship cases. We would like to continue this policy at the June Convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his/her name to the local lodge officers who, in turn, will review the case.

2. The application must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

3. The application must explain why he/she needs assistance.

4. There is no age limit for the member who needs assistance.

5. It makes no difference where the member is living.

6. The donation is not of a great sum and is for one time only.

7. The application must be mailed to the Finance Committee no later than May 30, 1988. Letters postmarked after May 30 will not be considered.

All cases will be reveiwed by the

committee before the convention; none will be accepted at the convention.

Hallettsville Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, April 10, 1988 at Mr. Gatti's Meeting Room at 2 p.m. with President Annie Vahalik presiding. Pledge to the U.S. flag was led by Gary Chudej and Tramer Woytek.

Gaynelle Chudej read a Resolution of Sympathy for our deceased member, Bernadette Mikush.

Our lodge was very pleased and happy to have State Youth Director Claudette Reese as a special guest.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the previous meeting which were approved after minor corrections.

Reports were given by Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Co - Youth Leader Gaynelle Chudej• President Vahalik reminded the members that our lodge will be hosting District VI spring meeting on Sunday, April 24,at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville. Committees were named at the last meeting and ladies of the lodge are asked to donate cakes, pies, kolache, etc. to be served with lunch. The lodge will furnish

sandwiches. Our lodge invites all members from District VI to Hallettsville for the meeting and get together.

Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave his report.

SYD Claudette Reese then gave an interesting and informative program and slide presentation on youth clubs and what they offer to our SPJST youth. She encouraged our youth club to get new members and become active again.

An Easter egg hunt was then held for the youth present. Refreshments and lunch were served and enjoyed.

Door prize winner was Patsy Zabransky.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, May 8 at Mr. Gatti's Meeting Room beginning at 2 p.m. as usual. The mothers will be honored and a birthday cake will be given to a member present with a birthday in April, May or June.

Honors Youth Leaders, Past And Present

Dear Readers: Our Sunday's Lodge 6 meeting was called to order at 1:15 p.m. by President Johnnie Krizan. He called on Michelle Mach to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and she also read the SPJST Motto.

The minutes from our last meeting were read by Barbara Hykel.

Treasurer's report was by Karen Kroll and financial report was given by George Straten; with no corrections, all were approved.

Get well cards were sent to Mary Krizan who had eye surgery and to Frank Popp who was in the hospital.

Frank is Rose Uptmor's daddy. We hope they both are doing good.

A thank you card from the Henry Duke family was read.

The president then introduced Sister Betty (Denak) McKinney to the membership and then called her to come to the officers' table to receive her 50 - year membership pin for this year. She expressed her thanks and appreciation. She then spoke about the history of her parents who came from Czechoslovakia, and about her brother who will also be entitled to receive his 50 - year pin in 1989.

New members accepted into our lodge were Ashton Marek, Danille Kroll and Julia Mechell. We welcome you to our lodge. We hope they all will attend our activities whenever they can.

Trustees' report was given by George Straten. A flag pole was donated to the hall by Raymond Maths. Robert Dobecka painted the pole and Eddie Hrabal helped him put it up and so we had a pretty flag flying for our Easter Party day; he also said the lodge made a donation to the West Fraternal Picnic.

Our Easter Party was well attended.

We were glad to see and have all members and their families who came to the meeting and helped us celebrate on Easter Day. The rest of the agenda was a short program by the youth club, had an Easter egg hunt; prizes were given in each age group and we had a delicious fried chicken supper.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported on her youth club projects and other activities, such as kite flying contest, bake sale, donation to the Leroy - Tours - Gerald Fire Department, donated an item to West Fraternal and brought some items to

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers and Parliamentarian Dan Balusek was absent and Brother Wilie E. Kohutek sat in for him. She read the roll call of trustees and also sales representatives.

The minutes of our March 6 meeting were read and approved as read.

Correspondence included a letter from Temple Mayor John Sammons regarding employment of handicapped and a letter from Supreme Lodge regarding the recipients of 50 - year pins to be awarded to the 15 members in the next lodge meeting on Sunday, May 1 at 2 p.m. Each recipient will be sent an invitation to be present and a reply card so we know who will be coming and who will not be able to attend at all. Please reply!

On the sick list have been members, Sisters Mary Kohutek (who passed away April 13), Lillie Mikulas, Anna Belle Chlapek, Dorothy Morris, Frances Ondrasek, Elsie Carlson, Brother Rueben Mikeska, and Brother Jerry Pechal is now hospitalized at the Temple VA Hospital. Hope everyone is on the road to complete recovery by now. Get well, soon!

Officers' reports followed. The president thanked all for the food at the spring District II meeting and for the supper following the meeting and for your excellent presence at both meetings. Lodge 47 won the prize of a set of dominoes for the most members present percentagewise. President Pechal also received the door prize of a set of dominoes for himself. Reports given on "Straight" and "42" Domino Tournaments and our lodge teams did real well, especially Wallace and Elsie Jez who were third place winners in State "42."

The forthcoming lodge picnic will be on Sunday, June 5 starting at 11:30 a.m. serving of barbecue plates as well as hamburgers, French fries and barbecue on bun, kolache, cakes and coffee, plenty of cold drinks, games for all ages, auction and free music by various groups same as at the last year's picnic. One - half of a beef, 13 inch TV, a mirowave, and AM/FM radio with cassette will be prizes for the drawing. Everyone is invited for a fun - time for all. Circle June 5 on your calendar and come to Seaton Star Hall.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky gave her report; 34 members, 6 visitors and 9 adults and new member, Amanda Dodd were present. Twenty - four of the youth attended District II meeting on March 27, Tommy Gibson and Amy Kohutek were elected flag bearers, and Patsy Koslovsky was elected assistant DYC. The youth club will maintain the cleanliness of two miles of Highway 53 fronting the hall starting when the signs are in place.

(They were erected on Wednesday, April 13th.) Ten youth and 2 adults will make up the team for each trash pick-up about 4 or 5 times a year.

April birthdays will be celebrated by Sisters Albina Mikeska, Lydia Kotrla, Mary Tepera and Judy Sirney and Brothers Johnie L. Vanicek and Anton Vitek. "Happy Birthday" to each of you! Wedding anniversaries will be celebrated by these brothers and sisters, Willie E. and Adeline Kohutek, Wesley and Vallie Tupy, Johnnie and Georgia Pavlica, Bob and Mary Vasicek, Eugene and Annie Mae Hejl.

Hope you all may celebrate many, many more years of health and happiness.

Our meeting was adjourned at 3:03 p.m. and the program honoring youth leaders and assistants followed.

Brother Nick A. Morris volunteered in December to contact all past youth leaders for this presentation. Thirty were to be honored and twenty were present; namely, Emily Stuteville, Vlasta Divis, Vlasta Hruska, LaVerne Vanicek, Adeline Kohutek, Georgie Pavlica, Vallie Zavodny, Dana Glaser accepted for deceased Jerlene Balusek (her mother), Frank Klinkovsky, Lucy Mihatsch, Gladys Marek, Dolores Skrabanek, Calvin Skrabanek, Judy Motl, Gennie Tepera, Mary Ann Billeck, Rosie Craft, Caralou Young, Patsy Koslovsky and Judy Pechal.

Each was seated at the front table "decorated with vases of white and red carnations which were distributed to each for a remembrance of being present for a special event. Brother Nick A. Morris asked Frank Klinkovsky to speak to the assembled and he stated that each of these gave their valuable time to educate the children in SPJST morals and friendship that are being practiced by the new adults in everyday living.

Enthusiasm, preparation, careful planning of socials, parties, camp activities and YAD are only a few of the requirements of a successful youth leader or assistant. Thank you to all past youth leaders and assistants and a salute to Sister Clara Hejl (now deceased) who started the youth movement at Star Hall in the early 50s.

All ex - youth club members were asked to stand.

The preparation for the lodge picnic will be on Saturday, June 4 at 4 p.m. until?? No dance is scheduled for Saturday night, therefore, we can work until midnight if need be. If you are asked to work, please don't turn down the chairperson who has consented to donate his time for a worthy effort. With everyone's help, we will have a successful project.

Dear,Members: On Sunday, April 10 at 12 noon, our lodge members enjoyed a very delicious dinner of fried chicken and baked ham. Sister Willie Mae Kuykendall baked the ham. We thank her and also all the good faithful sisters for the various dishes of vegetables and pastry they brought.

What a feast we had!

We were honored to have our District V Director Jerry Prochazka and his lovely wife, Delores, and Erlin Horelica, son of Mrs. Anna Horelica whom we were honoring on her 50th anniversary pin, with us. Sorry, Ella Marie Macek was unable to be with us.

We hope our guests will soon come and visit us; always happy to see you!

At 1:30 p.m. President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order.

We were led in repeating the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag by Benita Walzel.

We now honored Anna Horelica with a beautiful corsage of red roses, pinned on by Benita Walzel, and President Charlie Matcek presented her the 50th anniversary pin, as Gilbert Walzel snapped Kodak pictures of the happy occasion.

Secretary Mary Werner read the roll call and all officers were present. She also read the minutes and financial report. Willie Mae Kuykendall gave the treasurer's report and Gilbert Walzel gave the Special Fund report; all reports were accepted as read.

It was reported Edward Susan is now convalescing at home after a stay in the hospital. We wish you a speedy recovery.

District V Director Jerry Prochazka congratulated Anna Horelica on attaining the status of 50th anniversary. He also spoke to our local lodge sales representatives.

Report On Lodge No. 133, San Antonio The monthly meeting of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio was called to order

by President Anthony Trilicek at St. Margaret Mary Activity Center on March 20th. The roll call of officers showed all present. There were 39 members present and 3 visitors.

The minutes were read and corrected. The Entertainment Committee recognized Sister M. Kleprlik, Brother Alfred Kalmus and Brother Bill Mares for their donations to the lodge.

The Anniversary Committee reported that Louis and Teresa Jasek were celebrating their 19th anniversary. Brother Adolph Popp was reported on the sick list.

Brother Alvin and Sister Frances Schimcek reported that they had attended the Straight Domino Tournament. They said the fraternalism they saw was great and they encouraged the officers and members to participate in similar events.

Brother William Mares and Brother Emil Matula reported on the SPJST Seminar they attended.

President Anthony Trilicek reported that he had talked to the District President Bob Beyers. Registration for the District VII meeting to be held on April 17th would be at 11 a.m. The meeting would convene at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch at 12:30 p.m. and the conclusion of the meeting at 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be prepared by Snoga's and sold to the members.

Sweets will be provided by the members.

Brother Alvin Schimcek asked members to recognize Brother Joe Spacek for his willingness to always help with providing for the meals. The president also thanked him.

Sister Thelma Hrncir was present at the meeting and reported on different topics now under consideration by the Supreme Lodge.

"Split the Pot" was won by Gertrude Pavliska and Brother George Schultz. The attendance prize was won

by Alfred Kalmus - 1st, Frances Schimcek - 2nd, and Jaroslav Kleprilik - 3rd.

The officers and members of SPJST Lodge No. 133 wish to extend sincere sympathy to the family of Brother Albin Popp. Brother Albin Popp was a dedicated member of the lodge and his loss will be felt by all. He is survived by his wife Mary; two sons, Eddie Popp and Charles Popp and six grandchildren.

With no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned. Members then enjoyed refreshments and a games party.

6/VESTNiK-Wednesday, April 20, 1988 Sister Mary Pavey reported on birthday, get well, sympathy, and a special thank you card to Brother Roy and Sister Lydia Alholm who made us so welcome for our annual Easter picnic.

Brother Milan gave us some highlights on the by-law committee meeting he attended and reminded us of the District III meeting.

Our youth leader, Sister Carolyn Cleveland, did a superb job on the plans for the Easter picnic. We could not have asked for a more beautiful day and we had a large attendance. I will list the winners at the end of this article.

Roy and Lydia are gracious hosts, and for some of the first timers, they could not get over the beautiful setting and so spacious for the many activities, also including baseball and horseshoes, and a lot of fellowship. A million thanks to two fine people, God bless you!

Our young member Trey Steinman spent his spring break traveling to Vancouver, B.C.; Victoria, B.C. and Seattle, Washington with the Dorothy Shaw Bell Choir. He said it was wonderful.

Josh Milan had an accident the second day of his ski trip in Breckenridge, Colorado, but is doing okay now.

Brother Kent Johnson enjoyed his ski trip in Nevada and got home safely and, then last week, was hit by a drunken driver that totaled his car and luckily he received no serious injuries, but was shook up for days.

Sister Jeanie Mason also was hit by a lady going through a red light. Her car was damaged badly and she, too, was shook up for several days and luckily no serious injuries.

We extend our get well wishes to Sister Margie Cline who was hospitalized for over a week and is now home recuperating, and to Sister Agnes Merlick who fell down the stairs while visiting her daughter, Betty Mueller, in Miami, Florida and broke her pelvis and was hospitalized for almost 2 weeks and is now recuperating at Betty's. I called her Saturday and she is doing better and sends her thanks to all for their concern. Get well, soon!

We extend our sincere sympathy to the families of Brother Jeff Maly on the loss of his sister, Mrs. Dolezal, of Shiner; to Sister Mary Ne Smith on the loss of her twin brother in Seymour; and to the Houzvichka family on the loss of their brother, Johnny. May they rest in eternal peace.

Congratulations to our young member, Patti Williams who was Summer Internship with Ernst and Whiney, CPAs. Our next meeting Sunday, May 8 falls on Mother's Day. It was voted our lodge will furnish the meat and members are asked to bring vegetables, salads, pastry and rolls; dinner at 2 p.m., meeting following at 3:30 p.m.

We wish all the mothers far and near a "Happy Mother's Day." A memorial was made in memory of Brother Joe Merlick by Victor Murphy.

Our door prize winner was Sister Gaye Williams and the meeting adjourned to high calories, fellowship and domino games.

Egg hunt winners in ages 7 and under were: 1st place - Chris Peaton, 2nd - Justin Nash, 3rd - Craig Galloway and 4th - Stevie Brown.

In ages 8 - 14 were: 1st place - Ky Cleveland, 2nd - Michael Mason, 3rd Sarah Pace and 4th - Shay Hennessey.

Least eggs found - Blaine Mason who won a wrist watch.

Egg toss ages 13 and under were: Jeremy Jirik and Eddie Sear.

Women's team - Marcia Newbill and Janee Wright Men's Team - Richey Turri and Michael Mason Men and Women's team - Debbie Kratz and Rick Conoway A good time was had by all.

The general membership meeting was held on March 15 with 14 members and one guest, Mrs. Lee Otte, present. We thank her for coming.

With President Louis Grochoske presiding, we recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and a moment of silence was observed for our departed members.

After roll call of officers, the minutes of our previous meeting were read by Secretary Frances Simmank; all officers gave their reports.

Bonding of the treasurer was discussed, and members voted no to pool tables.

Correspondence included letters from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar concerning the acts of fraternalism from our lodge and a thank you for the annuity for Kaylee Hurtik. A letter from Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary concerning the IRS was also read.

Jerry Janek reported that the Rules and Regulations (R&R) Committee had met and will give a report at a future meeting.

Our sincere sympathy to Julia Dueser and Edwin Simmank on the death of their sister, Elvira Roberts, and to Ernest Dueser on the death of his brother.

A get well card goes to Louis Grochoske recovering from a burned leg suffered at his place of work.

Mydell Grochoske attended the Sales Representative Workshop at Lodge No. 84 in Dallas.

Lodge 84 is hosting the District III meeting on April 17th; all members were urged to attend.

President Grochoske suggested that the Trustees and General membership meetings be held on the same day with the Trustees' meeting at 6:30 p.m. and the general membership at approximately 7:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. The next meeting was set for April 19th.

Letters From The Youth 9 Snook Youth Club Activities Lodge

Dear Readers, Our Youth Club is sponsoring a "Community Crime Watch" program for the Snook area. This meeting will be on Wednesday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the School Cafeteria. Everyone is invited to learn how to protect against crime and burglary.

Our Youth Club is also participating in the Snook Festival on May 14 by having a "fishing" booth. Come join the fun at the festival.

47 Youth Club Meets Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, On April 10, 1988 the meeting of Lodge No. 47 Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Michael Morris. Angela Pechcal led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

There were 34 members and 8 adults present.

The minutes were read. Treasurer Melanie Koslovsky gave her report.

This month's social will be bowling at Action Bowl in Temple on Sunday, April 17 at 3 p.m.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky reminded us to remember our lodge pledge.

After the meeting we had an Easter egg hunt.

Our next youth club meeting will be May 1 beginning at 2 p.m.

88 Youth Club Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Youth Club of Lodge 88, Houston met on Saturday, April 2, 1988 at 2 p.m. for their Easter Party and Egg Hunt. The fun began when the Teens began to hide colored eggs.

As soon as the Junior Youth Club members arrived, we hunted for the eggs that we hid.

After we found all of the eggs, we went inside the lodge to have our party. There were cake and punch for all to enjoy. Later, we danced the "Bunny Hop" with our own Easter Bunny, Michelle Linney, leading the line of youngsters and teens. We also danced "Popcorn" and played many fun and excitin g games. We all had a great time.

Our next social was scheduled for April 14, our next meetimz.

The theme for the anniversary program was "Spring Fever."

We, the undersigned. Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our deceased lodge sister RUTH F. [PENNY] LEWIS, who died March 6, 1988 in St. Joseph's Hospital in Bryan, Texas. She was the wife of Clint Lewis, former Sheriff and County Judge of Burleson County. "Miss Penny," as she was known and loved, was born in Dewitt County on September 13, 1913 and was educated in the schools of San Antonio where she began a nursing career and studied 16 months before entering the field of cosmotology and, having studied under some of the leaders in this field, she became a professional in the Art. Mrs. Lewis was a member of the First Baptist Church of Caldwell, the Ladies Orential Shrine Club of Austin and other organizations connected with her profession.

She is survived by her husband, Cling Lewis; a daughter, Sally Flosi of Bryan, Texas; three grandsons and two granddaughters.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on March 8 in Phillips - Luckey Chapel with Rev. Phil Lovelace officiating.

Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Pokrok Rowena No. 49, on behalf of the officers and entire membership, express sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother ELTON F. GOETZ, 65, of Rowena who died at 10 a.m.

Thursday, February 25, 1988 in the Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

Services were held at 3 p.m.

Saturday, February 27 at First United Methodist Church in Ballinger with the Rev. Robert Cavanaugh and the Rev. Bobby Baggett officiating. Masonic eraveside services followed at the Protestant Cemetery in Rowena, directed by Rains - Seale Funeral Home.

He was born March 13, 1922 in Rowena. He was married to Mildred Dean on December 1, 1946 in Rowena.

He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II and retired as a chief master sergeant in the Air Force in 1964. He was a member of the Rowena Lions Club and the First United Methodist Church. He was a member and past master of Miles Masonic Lodge No. 898 and member and present master of Norton Masonic Lodge No. 1070. He was a 32nd degree KCCH in Waco Scottish Rite Bodies and belonged to the Suez Shrine Temple, York Rite Bodies, Heart of Texas York Rite College and Miles Chapter No. 672, Order of the Eastern

Star and SPJST Lodge No. 49.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Goetz of Rowena; a daughter and son in - law, Carolyn and Eddie McNelley of Rowena; grandchildren, Karen Horton and her husband, Dwain, and Kathy McNelley, all of Rowena; his mother, Emma Goetz of Ballinger; two sisters, Emmalene Watson of Rowena and Darlene Dillard of Las Vegas, Nevada; one brother, Mirand "Popeye" Goetz of San Antonio.

Pallbearers were Lonnie M. Rankin and Daniel Redman of Miles, Oran Bigby of Ballinger, George Leone of Rowena, Herbert and Paul Stoecker, both of Abilene.

Honorary pallbearers were members of MjJes and Norton Masonic lodges.

The family requested memorials be given to the Shrine Hospital, the American Cancer Society or a favorite charity.

Brother Havel was born on August 15, 1930 in Caldwell, Texas to the late Joe H. Havel, Sr. and Mrs. Mary Vavra Havel of Caldwell. Mr. Havel, a lifelong resident of Caldwell, was a plumber.

He was a member of the Deanville Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Brethren Church. He was married to Anna May on August 15, 1951 at Hearne.

Survivors include his wife, Anna (Vicky) Havel of Caldwell; three sons, Anthony Havel, Donald Havel and Fred Havel of Caldwell; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Ramona) Arnold of Walls, Mississippi and Mrs. Edward (Anna) Wotipka of Caldwell; mother, Mrs. Mary Havel of Caldwell; sister, Mrs. Pauline Phelps of Caldwell and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on March 15 in Phillips - Luckey Funeral Chapel with Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating. Burial was in New Tabor Cemetery.

She is survived by one son, Franklin J. Karasek of Caldwell; one daughter, Mrs. Lambrecht (Frances) Baron of LaGrange; stepmother, Mrs. Mary Gaas of Caldwell; brother, Richard Gaas of Bryan; stepbrothers, Antone Gaas of Buckholts, J.D. Gaas of Bagonria and Milton Gaas of College Station; sisters, Frances Charanza of Caldwell and Ann Sherlock of Colorado; stepsisters, Matilda Kocurek of Caldwell and Josephine Benn of Somerville; five grandchildren and seven great - grandchildren.

Funeral mass was held on March 19 in Holy Rosary Catholic Church at Frenstat with Monsignor B.J. Zientek, Rev. Pat J. Zurek, Rev. John G. Boike of College Station and her grandson, Rev. Edward Karasek officiating.

Interment was in Holy Rosary Cemetery.

Sister Otto was a pioneer school teacher in Guy in 1913 and, in later years, she served as an instructor for Zorn Business College in Houston.

She is survived by two daughters, Bernadetta Zorn of Houston and Marjory Lattimore of Edinburg; one granddaughter, Lyda Lynn Smith of San Francisco, California; one great granddaughter, Laurie Anne Smith; one great - grandson, Travis E. Smith, both of San Francisco. Also, several nieces and nephews survive.

Graveside services were conducted at the Guy Public Cemetery at 10 a.m.

Saturday morning, March 19, with the Rev. T. Walter Moore officiating.

Services were under the direction of George H. Lewis and Sons of Houston, and Garmany and Carden Funeral Home of Rosenberg.

Sister Hejtmanek was born in Rosebud, Texas on April 2, 1897.

Survivors include four daughters, Martha Jane Schimek, Anna Mae Jurek, Alice Jurek and Georgia Lostak; two brothers, George Hejtmanek and Frank Hejtmanek, 17 great grandchildren, 36 grandchildren and 6 great - great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Henry Jurek, Jr., Glenn Jurek, Allen Lostak, Ottman Schimek, Jr., George Hejtmanek, Jr., Ron Hejtmanek and Louis Hejtmanek.

Hejtmanek, 90, of the Ashby community were held March 19, at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Koslovsky officiating.

Burial was in Hawley Cemetery, Blessing.

Mrs. Hejtmanek was born April 2, 1897 in Rosebud, Texas to Frederick and Anna Pitrucha Wetzel and died March 18, 1988 at Bayshore Hospital, Pasadena, Texas.

A resident of Ashby (near El Maton) since 1928, she was a member of the Unity of the Brethren Church and SPJST. She joined the SPJST in October, 1914 in Rosenberg. A few years later, she, with her husband and family, moved to Matagorda County.

There her husband, Frank J. Hejtmanek, helped organize Lodge No. 148, El Maton of which she was a charter member and remained a member there until her death. Her husband preceded her in death in 1962.

Survivors include four daughters, Anna Mae Jurek of Pasadena, Georgia Lostak of Highlands, Alice Jurek of South Houston and Martha Jane Schimek of Bay City; two sons, Frank Hejtmanek of Pasadena and George of Ashby; 17 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren and six great - great grandchildren. The nine granddaughters are La Nelle McKay, Patricia Jones, Janice Corporon, Shirley Bryson, Alice Braley, Karen How ery, Sylvia Huey, Sandra Angerani and Cheryl Home. The eight grandsons are Henry Jurek, Jr., Glenn Jurek, Allen Lostak, Ottmar Schimek, Jr., George Hejtmanek, Jr., Ron Hejtmanek, Frank G. Hejtmanek and Louis Hejtmanek.

Her grandsons served as pallbearers.

Brother Vaybs was born at Sharp, Texas on April 9, 1928, and was a retired farmer.

He will be remembered for his sweet smile and his ability to help others in need although he was handicapped all his life.

Brother Morris was born in Arcadia, Kansas, to the late John William Morris and Lula Bell Morris. He came to Central Texas 35 years ago. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a retired farmer. He was a Baptist.

Graveside services for Brother Morris were at 2 p.m. on March 26 at the Holland City Cemetery with the Rev. Clarence Rose officiating.

Survivors are his wife, Claudia Morris of Holland; six sons, Phillip Morris of Holland, Jackie Ray Morris of Houston, Joseph Morris of Wichita, Kansas, Harold Morris of Alatha, Kansas, Karl Morris of Lenoard, Michigan and Donald Morris of Tampa, Florida; one brother, Walter Morris of Norman, Oklahoma; one sister, Vivian Jameson of Arcadia; six grandchildren and one great - grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sissy Shannon of Holland.

Brother Zajicek came to the United States from Czecholsovakia at the age of 3. He lived in the Val Verde community since then. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Val Verde.

Funeral services for Brother Zajicek were held March 28 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Val Verde with the Rev. Bill Jennings officiating. Burial was in the Val Verde Cemetery.

Survivors include three sons, Johnny Zajicek of Temple, Jack Zajicek of Round Rock and Robert Zajicek of Destrehan, Louisiana; three daughters, Cheryl Naylor of Japan, Pamela Melton of Denton and Bernadine Pelley of Rogers; three brothers, Joe Zajicek of Rogers and Leopold Zajicek and Raymond Zajicek, both of Holland; five sisters, Marie Belicek of Temple, Annie Fronek of Heidenheimer, Ammie Macek of Burleton, Albina Brady of Fort Worth and Stella Mainard of Holland; nine grandchildren, six step grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A rosary was recited at 8:15 p.m.

April 1, at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. April 2 at West Brethren Church with Rev. Lawrence Junek officiating.

Interment was in West Brethren Cemetery, near West.

Sister Marek was born 28 July 1901 in Fayetteville (Fayette County) Texas to Anton and Anna Dvorak. She married Frank F. Marek in West on 1 February 1921. He preceded her in death on 20 September 1973. She was a housewife and a farmer.

Sister Marek was a member of the West Brethren Church and a member of SPJST since 13 August 1947.

Survivors include three sons, Edmund F. Marek of Penelope, Frankie G. Marek of West and Joe Marek of Northcrest; five daughters, Mine Kaluza and Leona Kral, both of West, Helen Smith of Northcrest, Mary Ann Hutyra of West and Shirley Willenborg of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; 37 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren and 2 great - great grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers were Freddie Kaluza, Billy Wayne Kral, Larry Podsednik, Rodney Cepak, Johnny Ray Hutyra, Larry Marek, Scott Willenborg and Tommy Kaluza.

Honorary pallbearers included all her loving grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the West Ambulance Association or to the St. Mary's School Endowment Fund.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth, Texas, wish to express heartfelt sympathy, on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of MILDRED TROJACEK, of Burleson, Texas, who died Sunday, March 27, 1988 in a Fort Worth hospital at the age of 72.

Sister Trojacek was born in Franklin in Robertson County and moved to the Fort Worth area in 1941. She had been a licensed vocational nurse for several Ft. Worth hospitals for about 30 years and retired in 1974.

Sister Trojacek was a member of First Christian, Church of Burleson and Epsilon Sigma Alpha, a community service organization. She was also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 92.

Survivors are: husband, Johnnie D. Trojacek of Burleson; one daughter, Frances A. Grubbs of Burleson; one sister, Ruth Baxter of Bryan; three granddaughters, Jama Mercier of Oklahoma and Christie Evans and Pam Money, both of Burleson; also one great - granddaughter, Jessica Evans of Burleson.

HANACIK, age 65, who died in a Temple hospital on March 28, 1988. He was born July 9, 1922, in the New Tabor community to Bohus J. Hanacik and Frances Marie Sefcik. He had lived in Burleson County all of his life.

Brother Hanacik was a retired farmer. He served his Country in World War II where he was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the New Tabor Brethren Church, American Legion Post No. 451 and VFW Post 4458.

He is survived by three sisters, Agnes Vajdak of Snook, Dorothy Whye of Bellview, Nebraska and Delphine Lovlin of Portland, Oregon.

Funeral services were held March 30 at 2 p.m. from the Strickland Funeral Home of Caldwell, with the Rev. John Baletka officiating. Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

Brother Ewald was born July 18, 1922 in Rowena to prominent cottonbuyer P.P. Ewald, Sr. and wife Albia Cervenka Ewald. He moved with his family to San Angelo when he was 3 weeks old. He attended public schools and graduated from San Angelo High School. He was an outstanding high school player and trackman. He attended Texas A&M University on football and track scholarships. He was a Marine Corp veteran assigned to duty as an F.O. Observer in April, 1943. He participated in action on Tinian, Guam, Iwo Jima and the occupation of Japan. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Texas A&M and taught Cotton Classing School.

In 1946, he became associated with his father, P.P. Ewald, Sr. and brother, Arnold, as cottonbuyer for P.P. Ewald and Son Cotton Company. In 1972, with his wife, Samie, he formed P.P. Ewald and Sons, Inc. Today his sons, Brent and Paul, are active in the business.

Brother Ewald had always been active in the advancement of youth sports. He coached various Little League and Teenage baseball and football teams for 18 years. He also enjoyed officiating San Angelo Relays for many years. In recent years he had been active in farming and ranching.

He served on the Board of Texas Cotton Association and was past director of the Concho Valley Savings and Loan. He was a member of SPJST Lodge Pokrok Rowena No. 49.

He is survived by his wife, Samie Ewald of San Angelo; one daughter and son - in - law, Sharon and David Strayhorn of Burkburnett; two sons and daughters - in - law, Brent and Lesa Ewald and Paul and Bonnie

Mrs. Albina F. Hilsher observed her 95th birthday recently at Care Inn of La Grange, Texas where she has resided for a number of years.

Present for the special occasion were her children and their spouses; namely, Elenora and Herbert Lange, John and Palmae Hilsher, Josephine and Leander Pflughaupt, Gladys and Warren Havemann, Ruth and Bob Martinak.

A birthday cake with other refreshments were enjoyed.

Mrs. Hilsher has been a Fayette County resident all her life. Born at Roznov, near Fayetteville, she was one of 12 children of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Halamicek. She was united in marriage with Charles Hilsher who preceded her in death. They resided in the Park community for many years.

Mrs. Hilsher is the mother of eight children, three of whom, Alfred, Charles and Harold, are deceased. She has 23 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren. Most of the family are SPJST members.

It's not hard to understand why so many people put out food for the birds in winter. Eavesdropping on some of nature's most beautiful creatures can be like watching a sitcom. But once you start feeding the birds, keep it up throughout the winter. Birds can live only about two or three days without eating, and some birds get so hooked on the ready supply that they won't survive without a well - stocked feeder.

Just how popular your feeder will be among your feathered friends depends largely on the kind of food you put out. Most seed - eating birds prefer small, black - oil sunflower seeds.

Thistle seed is also good for goldfinches. White proso millet is just right for doves, towhees, sparrows and other ground - feeding birds. Birdseed is sold in many feed stores and gardening centers. Mixes that include cracked corn will attract such undesirables as crows and starlings, and many wild birds don't like the canary seed often found in cheap feeders like seed bells. To keep squirrels away, mount an old phonograph record above a hanging feeder or below one on a p9le. The animals can't get around the disc.

*** For several recreational boaters, a sip of beer, wine or something harder is part of the fun. But it's easy to -­ well, go overboard. At least half of the 1,100 annual U.S. boating fatalities involve cJ.lcohol. To help stop the carnage, the Coast Guard has begun checking boaters for signs of intoxication. Operating a boat under the influence became a federal offense in 1984, and since mid - January of this year violators could get a year in jail and a $5,000 fine. The Coast Guard has the authority to board any vessel in U.S. waters to check for intoxication.

Boaters can be asked to walk a straight line or to take a breath test. A blood alcohol concentration of 0.10 percent or more indicates intoxication. For a 180 - pound person, that would result from downing a six - pack of beer within 2 hours. Almost every state has laws forbidding drunken boating, but standards vary. Only 22 states, for example, set specific blood - alcohol levels.
