It is the duty of the lodge and its members to support the sales representatives of your lodge and help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

floor, therefore you don't have much time left if you wish to make additional proposals.

It was appreciated when a young man from Lodge 18, Elgin came forward to extend an invitation to host the District II fall meeting in conjunction with a fun carnival September 25, which has become popular among their membership.

Our gratitude is expressed, at this time, to host Lodge 47 members for their fine hospitality. ***

There were 208 members present at the District II meeting and that reminds this editor that there are five more district meetings to be held

before the convention arrives (District I, April 10 and Districts III and VII, April 17) so our members are reminded to make extra efforts to attend them; they are important forums for the exchange of ideas and opinions from which the delegates of your lodges and districts will have rather correct idea of how to vote on certain changes and proposals to the By-Laws and other topics which come up for discussion.

Sister Emma Ceska, District III secretary, has a very complete set of minutes from the last District III meeting in this issue which she delivered for printing and she expressed her hope that a very large number of members of the district would turn out for the District III meeting to be held at Lodge No. 84, Dallas, April 17th. That hope is echoed by this writer and all District III officers. District III has had rather poor attendance at recent meetings. Time and time, again, we hear that our SPJST Society "belongs to the members and all have a voice in its affairs" so let us all exercise that privilege and practice it! Seems that too many members feel that others can do their wishes for them. Let us have a good turnout April 17th. It would really be something to admire if all lodges were represented at district meetings!

Sunday, April 17, is the date of the Czech play to be presented at Lodge No. 88, Houston. The title "Virgin In The Castle" alone tells us that it is an enjoyable play that will give the audience an entire evening of sincere laughs and entertainment. Your editor knows many of the members in the cast, personally, having been in plays with them in the past, and can assure you that it will provide you with an afternoon of enjoyment among friends. There are many phrases in the Czech language which can be said in such a way that make them very humorous, whereas, if they are said in some other language (English for instance) they lose the humor which is evident in Czech and, yet, carry no vulgarity in being expressed. We hope many of our members will attend the performance and reward the "Hlahol Dramatic Club" for their time and efforts in rehearsing for weeks past. ***

Lesikar Reunion The descendants of John Lesikar II will hold their 22nd annual reunion on Sunday, April 17, 1988 at the Gober Party House in Temple. A covered dish luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. Everyone had a good time last year, so let's make this one better. Dear Brothers and Sisters: We are preparing for the 1988 Convention to be held in Temple on June 19, 1988 and, as in the past, the convention has provided assistance to members of the SPJST Society who were judged as hardship cases. We would like to continue this policy at the June Convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his/her name to the local lodge officers who, in turn, will review the case.

2. The application must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

3. The application must explain why he/she needs assistance.

4. There is no age limit for the member who needs assistance.

5. It makes no difference where the member is living.

6. The donation is not of a great sum and is for one time only.

7. The application must be mailed to the Finance Committee no later than May 30, 1988. Letters postmarked after May 30th will not be considered.

All cases will be reviewed by the committee before the convention; none will be accepted at the convention.

SPJST District III meetings are important! The district meetings give members an opportunity to express their opinions. The district meetings give members an opportunity to learn what our Society is doing. The district meetings give members and families an opportunity to join in fellowship in one of the best fraternal societies in the State - The SPJST. Uncorrected Minutes Of SPJST District III Meeting - October 25, 1987 At Lodge 154, Ft. Worth The fall meeting of SPJST District III was held on Sunday, October 25, 1987 at Eagle Mountain Athletic Center, home of Lodge 154 in Ft. Worth with President Brother Richard G. Burney presiding.

The meeting was scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. but was called to order at 1 p.m. to allow time for those who might have planned to arrive after lunch. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearers Timmy and Tommy Pavelka. Timmy and Tommy Pavelka also recited our SPJST Motto.

Welcome was by Sister Rose Steinman, vice president of Lodge 154.

(President Jerry Milan was out of the state and unable to attend.)

The response was by 1st Vice President Brother Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr. The minutes of the previous meeting held at Lodge 35 on May 3, 1987 were approved as published in the Vestnik.

A tribute to the departed members in District III was given by 2nd Vice President Mydell Grochoske.

Everyone enjoyed the short program presented by the youth which was followed by the youth meeting with the District III youth counselor.

The Supreme Lodge report was given by Financial Secretary Brother Jerry Mikulas. He reported that 1987 was the finest year that we have ever had. He encouraged convention delegates to think about what they vote for and encouraged them to protect our Society so that we can have it for years to come. He stated the Board of Directors are fine directors and tried to promote new ideas as Universal Life, Annuities and IRAs. He reported at the recent National Fraternal Congress, there was a topic on Futurism - Goals and Missions for Fraternals. He stated he was proud that the SPJST had already organized our committee. Brother Mikulas briefly discussed the convention to be held June 19 - 22, 1988 in Temple. He stated all lodges have been notified of number of delegates each is entitled to and that the total number of delegates

is 356. He reported the Internal Revenue Service had recently tried to tax insurance premiums, and that the government is constantly trying to find ways to tax fraternals, and directors must constantly stay on top of situations as these. In discussing direct bill, Brother Mikulas reported that 80 percent of all certificates are on direct bill. Lodge 84 was the first lodge in District III to go-on the plan and these members are pleased. He stated his office was trying to update records on the computer and keep everything on line, and that if there is a question or problem to please call him.

District III Director Brother Sid Pokladnik reported we have a good Supreme Lodge body. In deliberations, they think of the member and the Society as a whole, and what is decided by majority is done. He reported on visiting the National Fraternal Congress of America in Chicago recently. There are 101 fraternal societies in America.

The SPJST is one of the smallest fraternals, one of the few domiciled societies in that we only operate in one state - in Texas. He stated we were fortunate to have a Texas domiciled fraternal society president of the National Fraternal Congress the past year, Louis B. Engelke, of the Sons of Hermann. Brother Pokladnik stated the sessions at the Fraternal Congress included topics on leadership, the importance of working together as fraternalists, and drug abuse. He stated the Home Office is working hard to keep our non - profit fraternal system. He mentioned all members should stay alert, and when called on by our Society, help in any endeavor by calling or writing representatives and senators and notify them we are against taxation so we can continue to hold our fraternal system as a non profit organization. If we lost that, we will lose a lot of other things. He stated we want to continue our youth programs and keep other benefits that members and lodges have, such as premium refunds, and premiums to

lodges. He stated it was important for fraternalists to work together and to stay united for the benefit of each individual. In discussing drug abuse, Brother Pokladnik stated the SPJST tries to promote a program on drug abuse and asked each member to take this matter to the local lodge and work up a program.

Brother Pokladnik stated we need to be kept informed of what is happening in the state, and attendance at the Texas Fraternal Congress was important. The 1988 meeting will be held in Dallas and he asked those who could to attend a day or two, that we need to hear what these leaders from different fraternals are doing for our benefit and to see how the elected officers are out there working for us.

He stated they are doing this because they love you and the fraternal system and want to do this so our fraternal system may continue for many years. He again stated we do have to stay abreast of the tax situation mentioning that Internal Revenue Service is auditing seven largest fraternal societies, and if they are not acting as fraternalists, and not doing what they are supposed to according to the code, we will all be faced with a problem. We have to stay alert and abreast of the tax situation so we may continue to be non - taxed.

Brother Pokladnik recognized the sales representatives and thanked them for their efforts and their time in learning so we can serve our members with the new products and the new ideas in insurance. He stated District III had about 15 top sales people and recognized the top 12 -- Norma Alford, Larry Laznovsky, Emil Petr, David Andreason, Mary Renfro, Albert Kubala, Ben Jarma, Johnny Krizan, Ernest Haskovec, Evelyn Spacek, Dorothy Moore, Hugo Kocian, Louise Burney, Johnny Krejca and Raymond Hubenak. He congratulated them and the lodges that have reached their membership quota.

He stated the SPJST is strong, and that we are the 26th largest fraternal society in America. In the top 30 SRs, three are from District III. In 1986, we wrote 322 members for $6,828,000, premiums of $114,000; in 1987, 235 members for $4,358,000 with premiums of $115,000, which means selling larger premiums and that is good.

Brother Pokladnik reviewed the accomplishments by our youth in the SPJST. He spoke of their many talents and complimented the youth present for their talent, stating that the Supreme Lodge is proud to support our youth. He also reminded the lodges that information on Fraternalist of the Year should be submitted by November 1st. He stated that all lodges should do their best to have liability insurance and liquor licenses.

In his report on the rest homes, Brother Pokladnik stated that both the Taylor rest home with 72 patients, and the Needville rest home with 58 patients (2 short at this time) are doing well. Repairs costing approximately $200,000 have been made and all are paid for. He praised the administrators for doing an excellent job.

Brother Pokladnik stated he was sorry the number of members attending today was so small and hoped for a record turnout at the spring meeting. He stated fraternalism is important not only as a business but as fraternalists and as families. He stated we should understand the little problems and prepare ourselves for the future in the SPJST. Wednesday, April 6, 1988—VESTNIK/5 by telephone that he was out of the state and unable to attend today.

The By - Laws Committee will meet in January 1988. Brother Ben Jarma of the Insurance Committee stated they will meet on Saturday, January 23, 1988 in the Home Office. He asked that any recommendations and suggestions be submitted to him and thanked everyone for their support.

Brother Albert Banik of the Publication Committee was out of the city and it was announced this committee will meet in February.

The following financial report was given by Brother Burney in the absence of Treasurer Brother Albert Banik: Balance as of May 3, 1987, $752.08, income $550.75, expenses $425.70, leaving a balance, as of October 25, 1987, of $876.13. Financial Report District III Youth Fund: Balance spring meeting $2,273.81, amount allocated by Supreme Lodge $3,431.30, expenses $3,185.99, leaving a balance October 25, 1987 of $2,519.12.

Brother Rudy Sefcik, editor, reported he had talked with Brother Banik, Publication Committee, to make a report but he was unable to attend due to a prior activity. Brother Sefcik stated all committees needed suggestions and recommendations, and that if anyone did not like what the society was doing, he has a right to let them know. He stated it is for the members' benefit our society is in existence and members should protect it. Brother Sefcik stressed the importance of the use of the correct zip code number. He reminded the lodge historians or reporters to prepare a list of accomplishments to be included in the convention issue of the Vestnik.

Youth Counselor Sister Bessie Petr reported on youth activities and events. She reported 103 attended camp which included youth, staff and chaperones. She thanked Brother Howard Leshikar and Brother Pokladnik for being special guests.

Sister Petr reported $8,236.27 was allocated for camp expense and actual expenditures amounted to $6,604.48.

She reported the State YAD held in Temple was well organized and thanked Brother Leshikar and Sister Claudette Reese for their efforts in making the arrangements. Sister Petr reported that it was decided to use the balance of the allocation for camp totaling $1,631.79 for printing extra cookbooks. The Youth Club made a contribution of $100 to the SPJST Rest Home No. I in Taylor for their 30th anniversary. Plans for a trip to Six Flags and for a Lock - in at Lodge 84 were discussed.

The Audit Committee report is to be made at the next district meeting.

Roll call by lodges indicated 66 in attendance, representing 8 of the 19 lodges in District III. Lodge best represented was No. 154 with 18 attending.

The following were appointed on the Nominating Committee: Sister Gladys Yates, Brother Henry Breitkreutz and Brother B.J. Hlavaty.

The Youth Activity Day will be held on June 26, 1988 at Lodge 66 in Elm Mott. Thanks to Lodge 66 for requesting to host this event.

It was agreed the spring meeting would be held on March 20, 1988 at Lodge 84 in Dallas with the consent of the Supreme Lodge and with assurance of help for bringing more people to the meeting. Brother Pokladnik stated we are letting down on the job in not promoting as we should, and charged each one to help the district officers to promote the 1988 spring meeting.

Brother Pokladnik moved that the

district officers be authorized to design some type of promotional plan in an effort to increase attendance at the next meeting. The motion was seconded by Brother Jarma and it carried.

Sister Grochoske, on behalf of Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183, invited all District HI members to attend their Christmas Party to be held on December 13, 1987.

Door prizes, cash envelopes from $1 to $20 totaling $100, and special prizes consisting of a jacket, tie, cap, dominoes and a mug donated by the Supreme Lodge, were given at intervals throughout the day. The special prizes were greatly appreciated and the officers at the Home Office have our special thanks for providing these.

Everyone enjoyed the fellowship and -special thanks go to the officers and members of Lodge 154 for hosting this meeting and for providing the delicious food and for their wonderful hospitality.

March 13, 1988 The Spring Meeting of District V was held March 13, 1988 at Lodge 142 in Houston, Texas. All officers were present. Flag Bearer Lee Pflughaupt, assisted by Flag Bearer Amanda Hermis of Lodge 142, presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for departed members. A tape of Sister Helen Hegwood's beautiful rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner: and "Kde domov muj" (accompanied on piano by Sister Naomi Spencer) was introduced and played by Brother Tim Kostom.

Lodge 142 President Brother Dennis Hermis welcomed District V and those present.

Secretary Tennie Walla read the list of deceased members since last year.

Sister Elizabeth Hermis lit the candle in memory of the departed members.

President Tillie Helmcamp read the list of 50 - year members. Sister Josephine Buri was present. Pins for the others will be presented at the individual lodges.

District V Youth Counselor Marie Stayton gave a report on the activities of the Youth Club since last year. The youth presented a short skit to show that they know how to conduct a meeting. Then they retired to another room to hold their meeting and elect officers.

Second Vice President Louis Hanus introduced guests: Brother Sidney Kacir was visitor from the Supreme Lodge; current presidents of Lodges, Alvin Sefcik, president of Lodge 172; Charlie Matcek, president of Lodge 81; Dennis Hermis, president of Lodge 142 and Alvin Franta, president of Lodge No. 91 (and their lovely wives). Past presidents were also recognized Special recognition was made of Sister Frances Olexa, "Fraternalist for 1987," and Sister Della Kadlecek for her many insurance selling achievements. They both received standing ovations. Both are members of Lodge 88.

Secretary Tennie Walla called roll of lodges and seven were represented.

Two letters were ' read (1) from

DYC Marie Stayton [walking across floor] and some of the youth members who performed in their skit.

President Howard Leshikar regarding suggestions for activities at future district meetings and (2) from Vestnik Editor Rudy Sefcik thanking District V for invitation and reminding lodges to submit their histories as soon as possible.

President Helmcamp gave her president's report of activities since last year and presented Choral Club and Band from Lodge 88 with checks to thank them for their participation in our meetings.

Treasurer Homer Alexander gave his report and the Auditing Committee found the books to be in good order.

Brother Louis Hanus reported on activities at the rest home in Needville and urged all to contribute as much as possible for the progress of the home.

District V Director Bro. Jerry Prochazka complimented Lodge 142 for their fine hosting of the meeting; he thanked the Choral Group and Band for their participation in the day's activities. He mentioned the sales contest in which 30 top sales representatives were honored with a trip to Las Vegas. Out of the 30, 8 were from District V and the first 3 place winners were also from District V -- 1st place - Louis Hanus, 2nd place Evelyn Mikeska, 3rd place - Sidon Tumis. Evelyn Mikeska received her "Over Million Dollars" pin which was pinned by her granddaughter.

Brother Sidney Kacir brought greetings from the staff and officers of the Supreme Lodge. His main theme was the upcoming convention. He

urged everyone to get their suggested changes in writing to the committees at least 60 days before the convention for printing in the Vestnik 30 days before the convention. Brother, Kacir presented checks to District V and to the Youth Club, as well as checks to Brother Hanus in connection with his being top sales representative.

Sister Helmcamp recognized special members who attend the District V meeting regularly: Charlie Matcek and Bill Souchek (and wife). Brother Souchek told a story in Czech (and English) which provided a little comedy for the meeting.

President Helmcamp recognized the convention delegates who were present.

Brother Tim Kostom announced that the Lodge 88 Drama Club will present a Comedy Czech Play at Lodge 88 on Sunday afternoon, April 17, 2 p.m. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m.

6/VESTNiK—Wednesday, April 6, 1988 Brother Hanus made some announcements: Lodge 88 Choral Group and Orchestra will play at the Czech Festival in Rosenberg on Saturday, May 7 and Lodge 172 will celebrate its Gulf Coast Festival on November 6 in Pasadena.

President Tillie Helmcamp invited everyone to enjoy the free beer and dancing after the meeting adjourned.

President Richard Vajdak called the meeting to order. All officers were present, except Matthew Jakubik.

Mr. Ernest Jakubik gave a report on air - conditioners for the hall.

Mrs. Mary Ann Vajdak will be in charge of the chicken and dumplings supper on April 16; the supper will start at 5:30 p.m. and the cost will be $2.50 per plate.

We will give the City of Snook permission to hold a Domino Tournament during the Snook Fest on May 14th.

Taylor SPJST Lodge 29 held their regular monthly meeting on Sunday, March 13 at 3 p.m. with Vice President Ronnie Rieger presiding in absence of President Melvin Steger.

Nikki Rieger and Lorie Faltesek presented the flag and led our members to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The members remained standing in silent memory for our deceased members, Karen Schbach, Leroy Kolinek, Frank Drozda, Henry Krompota and Rueben Bryant.

We then had roll call of officers.

The minutes were read and the Property Committee report was given.

We will have a cake walk and country store in the afternoon, so make your plans for this event.

Lodge No. 32 met on Wednesday, March 9, 1988 at Citizens National Bank. The meeting was called to order

by President John Motal. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and followed by a moment of silence for departed members and the roll call of officers.

Adolph Motal introduced our guest speaker, John Stevenson of Citizens National Bank. He gave a very informative talk on investments.

Congratulations to Keith and Mary Beth Motal Byers on the birth of a daughter, Ashley Nicole. She was born on February 29, 1988 in Wilmington, Delaware and is the granddaughter of Adolph and Valeria Motal.

Herman and Mary Raska are proud of their son, Dwaine. He has recently been employed by Texas A&M University as an agriculture research technician.

We were glad to have Katherine Wokaty attending this meeting. She has been ill for a few months and we're happy to see her out and about again.

Mary Raska could still use some help with the Czech Fest. If you would like to help out, give her a call or come to the next meeting.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 13, 1988. We need you to attend.

President Geo. Pauling called our meeting to order at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 20th.

Flags were presented by Larry Yates and Bill Warren with Michael Warren leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto. Then, everyone was asked to remain standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased member, Sister Agnes Mazanec.

All officers were present.

Sister Darlene Engelke read a thank you note from the Agnes Mazanec family. Also, there will be some 50 year membership pins awarded later.

Secretary Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved. She also read a thank you note from Kenneth Kubala about the Tarok Tournament, which Lodge 66 hosted, and a big thank you for all who cleaned the parking yard.

Minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting held March 2nd were read by Sister Mary Langlotz.

The Entertainment Committee report was given by Sister Polly Gaidusek; she thanked everyone for the great help and all the pastry that was given for the Tarok Tournament dinner.

For our April 10th meeting, the ladies are asked to bring sandwiches for our meal. The committee will furnish chips, coffee and drinks.

President Geo. Pauling presented Sister Parma with a check for the Trust Fund. She also received a check from Charlie and Irene Mueller in memory of Sister Agnes Mazanec. Sister Parma thanked them.

Our new member accepted was John Henry Reich III. A Resolution of Sympathy was read for our departed member, Sister Agnes Mazanec.

Get well cards were sent to Barbara Stanislav, James Pavlicek, Jr., Rosemary Spence and Geo. Trefny. A sympathy card was sent to the Ed Mazanec family.

Youth Leader Gladys Yates reported there were 17 members present at the youth meeting. They had an Easter egg hunt and a visit from the Easter Bunny. There also was a discussion about having a get - together with the past youth club members and youth leaders, which would be held at our September meeting.

President Geo. Pauling thanked all for the help he had with the Tarok Tournament. The results of our local lodge Tarok Tournament were given, highest points were: 1st place - L.A. Lodge No. 73, Seymour Sam Houston Lodge No. 73 in Seymour held their Easter dinner on Sunday, March 6th. Also, a short meeting was held afterwards. The final plans for the District IV meeting at the Senior Citizens Center at Seymour were made.

The meeting date is Sunday, April 24 with registration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A noon meal of barbecue with all the trimmings will be served. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. We extend an invitation to all Supreme Lodge officers and members of other districts to attend.

Lodge No. 73 is asking all other lodges in District IV to let Raymond Pavliska or Alice Orsak know how many are attending the district IV meeting from their lodge. We would like to know how many to prepare for.

The deadline is April 14 for letting Lodge No. 73 know.

The ladies of Lodge No. 73 and the former Lodge No. 77 (Bomarton) are also to bring either kolache, cake or pies for dessert for the district meeting; also, they are to bring a gift for door prizes.

The next monthly meeting of Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13 at 7 p.m. at SPJST/Sokol Hall on 5502 Kostoryz Road. We would like to see more members attending meetings; that is the way you can be informed of what, your lodge is doing. We need, the input

of all the members to properly fill out the form for Fraternal Activities that is to be sent to Supreme Lodge. Also, there is the convention coming in June; for any comments or suggestions, come to the monthly meeting to speak your opinion.

Lodge No. 88, Houston News On April 10, 1988 from 4 to 9 p.m., there will be a great party; the Blue Room with chicken fried steak with lots added to this -- drinks, and a dance by Donnie Wavra -- all for $10 a person. Where else can you get so much entertainment for only $10? The Blue Room Committee, with Chairman Margaret Allbritton, is hoping that many of our members and friends will be there. There will not be a dull moment; all you Donnie Wavra fans make arrangements to be there.

The tickets are available at the Lodge 88 office, also Nat Gonzales, the bartender, will have tickets to sell.

On April 17, 1988, a dinner of baked chicken will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the Czech Play, "Nevinna panna na hrade," or "Virgin in the Castle."

The cast of Hlahol's production, "Virgin in the Castle," is made up of very talented performers.

No one wants to miss a play when Jan Schroif , talented, comic, performs. We also have the very born in talented Vera Cotrino, Czechoslovakia, who has played the lead actress in several past plays and always leads the audience to ask, "Who played that part?" Then, we must not forget Karel Sicner , who played the part of the Baron a few years ago. He's back again as the Count Nemanic (Count "Broke").

Ted Lapesh plays the Count's son, a bumbling, comic young man. Ted has played so well in the recent past plays, and the audience had many laughs from his characters. There's also from Lodge 88, Helen Kubicek, starring as the husband - seeking countess. Helen has given great performances in past plays. Helen's son, Count Egon, is played by Gene Barcak, a Lodge 88 member. Gene has been in many plays and always gives an excellent performance. Now, in addition to these veteran actors, we Mena have three newcomers; Pomeroy, from Czechoslovakia, is a very talented young . woman. Her performance on stage is excellent. Her suitor, talented ' Robert Ermis , dramatizes his role as a bashful musician so well. Besides acting, Robert plays the accordian in our Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra. Karel Matejka plays the comic stuttering uncle. A longtime Houston resident, Mr. Matejka has his own band. This is the third play Rose Sicner has directed.

The last two were so successful that we are looking forward to seeing "Virgin in the Castle."

The sale of advance tickets is $2.50; tickets will be $3 at the door; children under 12 years will be admitted free. Tickets can be purchased from the Lodge (869 - 5767) or Hlahol members.

The lodge will also be serving a baked chicken dinner and pastries.

The Czech Concert Orchestra of Lodge 88 under the direction of Vlasta Kovanda will be entertaining you prior to the play. You will also enjoy the singing of Lodge 88 members under the direction of Tim Kostom.

The Birthday Club Sisters will have the Pastry Booth, with Lillie Spies in charge, and we hope that the ladies from the Dramatic Club will also bring pastry such as kolache, strudel and other good sweets.

Come out and enjoy the "fun" afternoon. We have several real comedians in that play who will keep you in stitches at all times.

Lodge 88 And 142, Houston Join Forces It's great to know how lodges within the SPJST can work together so harmoniously.

A true example of this was exhibited this week when Robert and Mary Ann Kieschnick of SPJST Lodge No. 142, Houston donated over 100 books to Lodge No. 88 program to help the abused and neglected youngsters.

Thanks to Brother Louis Hanus of Lodge No. 88 who picked up these books from Robert and Mary Ann and delivered them to Homer Alexander, your Fraternal Activities' Coordinator at No. 88, who then delivered the books to Covenant House/Houston for use in their library.

Thank you Robert, Mary Ann and Louis for your support. With support like this there's no way that our "HELP THE YOUTH" at Covenant House/Houston can fail.

President Ronald Reagan has said "And then there are the unsung heroes. A person like Father Bruce Ritter is always there. His Covenant House programs provide shelter to thousands of frightened and abused children each year."

Lodge

Lodge 107 held its regular meeting on March 13, 1988 at the lodge hall.

Entertainment for the afternoon preceding the meeting was planned by Bob and Polly Bayer and Glen and Wendy Pruski. Several games of a game with dominoes were played and prizes were awarded to the winners.

The youth club members joined in the entertainment and several of them received prizes. It was a fun afternoon.

District VII Director Hrncir, her husband, Eugene and daughter, Angie, came up from Corpus Christi

and spent the afternoon with us. She commented on how nice the entertainment phase of our afternoon was and that it certainly should encourage better attendance at our meetings. We enjoyed their visit and hope they will be back soon.

At 4:30 p.m. the meeting was called to order by President Bayer. Trey Bielefeld led the pledge. All officers answered roll call.

Sick members, at the time of our meeting, were Jill Suggs, Aug. Merecka and Henry Sralla. A speedy recovery is our wish for all of them.

Correspondence concerning our 50 year award pins was discussed and it was decided to award them to the members at our May meeting.

Director Hrncir commented on various subjects pertaining to our Society. Interest rates have dropped, some lodges publish newsletters to arouse more interest in lodge affairs; some plans have been made for the Fall District VII meeting, which should make them more interesting to a wider group of members; some of the activities mentioned were kolache bake - off, quilting contest, horseshoe throwing and volleyball tournament.

She also mentioned that the scholarships in the future would be awarded on a merit system. A short run - down on activities at the Home Office was also given.

A report was then given on the Peanut Festival Board meeting by our Representative Roxy Bertrand; her dad, Bob Bayer, read the report.

The revised rules and regulations (R&Rs) were read and corrected so that they can go to their final printing.

Members, please note that April and May meetings will NOT be held on the regular second Sunday.

The April meeting will be held on FRIDAY NIGHT, APRIL 15th.

Entertainment will be as usual with a short business meeting following. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m.

The date for our May meeting has not been chosen but it will be the awarding of the 50 - year pins, so everyone stay alert. We want all of you to be present.

At the time of this writing, March 27, 1988, our daughter Liz Bielefeld is in the hospital recuperating from surgery that was performed on March 21st. She is doing fine and hopes to be released early in the coming week. Liz is our treasurer/financial secretary at Lodge No. 107.

Don't forget next meeting -- Friday night, April 15 at 7:30 p.m.

I would like to urge more of our members to attend the lodge meetings and to participate in the activities that are offered to the members. Very soon Sunday, April 17th will be our first of the year social dinner and dance -- no charge for due - paying lodge members. This includes a beef and sausage dinner and dancing to Henry Repka and the Wilderners Band.

Henry will play your favorite music, either polkas, waltzes or country western; dinner will be from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. and dancing from 3 to 7 p.m., so you all come! Non - members will pay $6 for the dinner and dance.

Our driver's education classes "55 alive" have ended and those attending expressed learning some valuable and helpful driving tips which can benefit them in the future. If we can have another class for adults 50 years and older, we will notify those who would be interested.

The Czech classes held each Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. are very enjoyable and those people of Czech origin can really brush up on their mother tongue. Those of us who spoke Czech at home with their parents and have gotten away from it now would enjoy coming to these classes and recall those younger days. We are also learning the history of Czechoslovakia. Soon we will have to have a singfest and learn some of the most popular songs.

We were very sorry to hear of the death of Chalice Roznovak, wife of our member, C.L. Roznovak, Jr. and the death of Deputy Sheriff Heiman in Rosenberg, the nephew of our good member Amalie Tofte.

At this time I would like to list the organizations that have benefited from our benevolent Lodge No. 172, namely: Boy Scouts of America District V Youth East Harris County Senior Citizens Pasadena Junior Forum The Bridge in Pasadena Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department March of Dimes Our lodge has been well and healthy this month, except for Brother Julius Zella who might require surgery on his right knee.

Dear Members: The past month has been very upsetting at the Kneschk household because Gracie's sister, who lives near Houston, became ill and Gracie went to help her on the road to recovery and then another sister living in Ennis had a stroke and passed away. Gracie and I are trying to help settle her estate and then my uncle, Otto Meissner, member of Lodge 145, had an insulin reaction. He is almost blind and couldn't see to give himself his shots so Gracie went to help him a few days until we could get him into the VA Hospital in Temple.

I went down for a week to help get his affairs in order.

Gracie and I would like to thank all of you SPJST members and friends for all of your kind words, thoughts, and prayers in these times and, especially, to Inez for attending the services for Gracie's sister in Ennis and also to Ed Kral and Ed's Transmissions for fixing my pickup that broke down at the same time while all of this was going on. All we can say is a big THANKS! Another member of Lodge 183 who needs to be given some praise is Ben Doskocil and the Doskocil Manufacturing Company for winning the 1987 Sporting Goods Dealer's Industry Leadership Award for manufacturing in the shooting field.

The Doskocils manufacture hard gun cases. He was honored in January at the Outdoor Trade Show in Las Vegas.

The Dealer Industry Leadership Awards began in 1961 to recognize individuals and companies that have excelled in their fields.

Congratulations to Ben Doskocil and to the Doskocil Manufacturing Company. Ben also donated a gun case, trotliner and some cash to our lodge's new softball team. I have been told that they (the team) already have won their first game; great going team!

Ben also donated some cash to the Youth Club so many big THANKS to BEN! Thanks also to Rudy Rejcek for taking the "bull by the horns" so to speak and getting the softball team organized and on the road to success.

It had been talked about in the meetings for about a year and it took someone to get things going. Thanks to Rudy!

This is what every lodge needs is members helping members working together to make a better world for the future!

Remember Sunday, April 10th, right after Bingo about 5 o'clock, will be the next regular lodge meeting and social.

Bring a covered dish; there will be a pot luck supper, games, socializing and fun. The December social was a big success so it was decided to try again in an effort to get more members to come to meetings.

While I was down at the farm I heard about the farmer who had a wife who was very critical of his grammar.

One evening he told her he had a friend named Bill that he would like for her to meet. "Don't call him 'Bill'," she insisted. "Call him c When the friend arrived, the farmer said, "Let me tell you a tale." "Not @tale,' the wife interrupted. "Say, @anecdote'."

That night, upon retiring, the farmer told her to put out the light.

"Not 째put out'," - she exclaimed. "Say, extinguish' the light:" Later in the night she awakened her husband and sent him downstairs to investigate a noise. When he returned, she asked him what it was. "It was," he explained carefully, "a William goat which I took by its anecdote and extinguished it."

Ladies' Circle Of Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our March meeting was attended by 36 members, 6 men and 1 guest, Mary Pavey. It's always nice to have Mary present.

Minutes were read and approved after a correction of one wrong name.

A get well card was signed by all of us for Ann Polk. She had an accident in her home and broke her leg. We hope you have a speedy recovery, Ann. I want to thank Clara Marchioni for keeping the notes for me since I wasn't able to be there. We had an illness and death in our family. Julia Dueser's, Ida Mayer's and Ed Simmank's sister, Elvira Roberts, passed away after a long illness and a week later Ernie Dueser's brother, Denson Dueser, passed away. They were both terminally ill so it was a blessing for both; they now rest in peace. It's never easy to give them up. We extend our deepest sympathy to both of these families, especially Julia and Ernie. He lost a brother and she lost a sister.

Then brother Jerry Simmank spent. 2 weeks in the hospital and is slowly recovering.

April hostesses will be Inez ICrivanek, Lillie McMillen, Justine Chaloupka and Minnie Ruzicka.

The door prize was won by Clara Marchioni. The door prize for April will be donated by Maggie Konecny.

Estabelle Hubenak invited the Circle to her home at Lake Granbury for a day of fun for the May meeting. The ladies voted to accept her invitation; sure sounds wonderful. We are to bring a sack lunch, bathing suits and fishing pole if you'd like to fish. More details on it later.

Rosie Zalesak gave a nice long story about her life growing up as an only child. Ima Lou La Plant was absent so she will give her report next meeting and also Rose Neiswiodomy.

Martha Durham reported about some of the plans for the October 8th anniversary celebration at Lodge 92. It will be one - day event. The ladies will have a booth and members will take turns operating the booth. So, ladies, start getting things together or making things for the booth. The money will go to our Circle.

Prayers were asked for Mrs. Herman (Svitak) Jordan who is very ill with cancer; prayers also for Louise Oujesky who will have eye surgery.

Louise Oujecky mentioned a quilting circle that she goes to and, if anyone is interested to help quilt, they will be welcome in Saginaw. You may call Louise for more details.

Those wished a "Happy Birthday" for March were Mary Botik, Justine Chaloupka, Rose Jaworski, Katherine Kosarek, Inez Krivanek, Maria Prill and Josephine Prochaska.

Youth Leader's Retreat Camp Lone Star was the site for the 1988 Youth Leader's Retreat. The weekend was packed with new ideas, enthusiasm, information and fun.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the beautiful weather.

Friday night's activities included youth leaders participating in the "Wheel of Fortune" game and ending with a campfire sing - along and ceremony. Those in attendance witnessed a once - in - a - lifetime happening; a satellite entered the Earth's atmosphere and disintegrated, leaving a beautiful trail of white light, all who were en route to the campfire ceremony were able to see this very awe-inspiring happening. What a way to begin a retreat!

Saturday morning was spent on reviewing the new Rule Book changes.

The changes are very exciting and met with approval from the youth leaders.

Those youth leaders who were not in attendance please contact your DYC and attend your District Training so you can be aware of the changes made in the Rule Book.

Charlotte Mason, Temple Junior College women's basketball coach, gave us all a very motivating presentation. Her enthusiasm for striving for your best in yourself and your youth was very inspirational to us all to be better leaders as well as better individuals.

Workshops were conducted in Taroky, dance, first - aid and Beseda.

Youth leaders also received new ideas for crafts at the craft fair. Instructions were shared and then all enjoyed the craft exchange.

Winners in the baby contest, best dressed and clip contest were recognized. The luau ended with a very moving and inspirational candlelight ceremony conducted by all present.

It was truly an action - packed weekend to learn, grow and share with others. I, for one, came away with a deeper appreciation for the word "fraternalism."

A special thank you to the DYCs who ably assisted me in conducting this learning event and to all who took time away from their busy schedules to attend the retreat.

Two of the main characteristics of Czech clothing are its billiant colors and the 16.50 embroidery of decoration. It is both men and women who use this type of ornamentation, since the colorful stitchery is found in both of their clothings, The hand - woven linen shirt displays fine embroidery at the wrist

and neck, the white trousers, short and wide, are lace trimmed or fringed at the bottom. These garments are sometimes made of buckskin. When they are made of linen, they are shirred or smocked at the top. Around the waist is a sash of red or black, and hangs to about the ankle. The wide leather belt over it is either pierced or embroidered. They wear high boots of polished leather which cover both the feet and legs. The short, sleeveless jacket is so heavily covered with beautiful embroidery that little of the foundation material, which is usually velvet, silk, cloth or sheepskin, is visible. A felt hat of minute - size has for its trimming an embroidered band, or a smart feather and a bunch of flowers. The Czech's overcoat is of skin with a fur lining next to the body.

The skins are ornamented with stitchery which has been colored in vegetable dyes, which are made by the peasants from native plants. The tulip, pick and star are the favorite themes used in designs for costumes, furniture and pottery alike.

The feminine silhouette is accented by the full, short sleeves, ankle - length skirt which is worn over two or three petticoats which are trimmed with handmade lace. The skirt itself is made of a series of aprons, very full and straight, and generally of different (Con't on Page 12)

The high boot is normally black with scallops or some form of decoration at the top. Long, handknitted stockings of red or white wool are worn with this foot - wear.

Very little of the women's hair shows as the entire head is covered by a cap or a handkerchief which is worn over the cap and tied in a knot at the back or simply knotted under the chin.

This handkerchief is folded in a variety of ways, each of which indicates the village or district from which the wearer comes. Both cap and handkerchief are beautifully embroidered and edged with lace.

Some of the head shawls are red or yellow cotton similar to the bandana.

The small shoulder shawls are of white and embroidered in striking designs and colors of black, with fringe as the finish on the edges.

The men of the Slovak districts clothe themselves in tunics, loose garments and large breeches of native homespun fabrics. At the waist they wear wide belts over a foot in width that hold all sorts of implements they use in hunting, eating and smoking.

Broad - brimmed hats decked with flowers and gaudy beads form the head covering.

The women wear snug - fitted hoods of red cloth, striped, ankle - length skirts, which do not have the fullness of the Czech women's skirt, are the most colorful of the Slovak women's garments, though the bodice sparkles with embroidery of several bright colors.

One of the finest examples of Czech clothing for both men and women that I have observed is that worn by the Beseda dancers at the District and State Youth Achievment Days. A lot of hard - work and imagination goes into these costumes but they are really pretty. Can you imagine not having an electric sewing machine to make these with?

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Youth Club Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje Youth Club meets the first Thursday of the month at the Commercial State Bank.

The youth club has 12 very active youth who keep busy during the year with activities such as their Christmas Fund Raiser, Texas Rennaissance, and Annual Parties. The youth club strives to "help others."

Youth Leader for the club is Mary Ann Karasek. Mary Ann is married to Larry Karasek and has one daughter, Kim. Mary Ann enjoys crafts, floral arranging and photography. She is active in the Catholic Daughters and "enjoys helping the youth."

Thank you Mary Ann for your dedication to the youth of our Society.

Many rows of shirring attach these straight pieces of wool or linen to the straight belts.

The blouse of soft, fine, white cotton or linen is either gathered or finely - pleated at the neck, thus giving the blouse fullness at the front and back. The neckline is finished with an embroidered band or a decorated ruffle three inches in width. The most striking part of the blouse is the sleeve which is very full, with an oblong of gay embroidery covering a large portion of its surface. It is gathered at

the elbow, stopping in an embroidered ruffle, or is caught into a band at the wrist. Little of the blouse except the sleeve and neck shows, as over it is placed a short, sleeveless close fitting jacket of dark material, made of silk and embroidered in rich colors. In Moravia this jacket has large bunches of wool pompons down the front.

The Czech women love to wear an elaborate apron embroidered, lace trimmed and of bright cotton or silk.

Down the front hang the long ends of the colorful ribbon which fasten it.

This is mainly worn for church or visiting.

Lodge No; 142, Houston Dear Readers, The Youth Club of Lodge 142 held their monthly meeting with very good attendance. We had one new member, Daniel Tumis.

The youth club has been busy going to the rodeo and attending our District V meeting which was held at our lodge on March 13th. We sponsored a cake sale and did very well. I would like to thank each of the youth members and all other lodges who donated pastry and helped work that day to make our sale such a success.

I would like to mention that I attended the Youth Leader's Retreat on March 26 and 27 at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. I was able to see a lot of old friends who I have made over the past few years and made a lot of new friends. State Youth Director Claudette Reese had a fun-filled weekend with many activities and new ideas for each of us to share. She did a VERY GREAT job along with the District Youth Counselors to make the

weekend exciting. We were all able to bring back some great ideas of new crafts and new dances.

After our monthly meeting we all went out and enjoyed pizza.

Dear Members, Our Snook Lodge No. 9 Youth Club held their monthly meeting in March.

I presented a program about St. Patrick's Day and Easter. I then gave a short presentation on my experiences in the calf scramble at the Houston Livestock Show.

We enjoyed working on craft. Our next meeting is set for April 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Lodge 66 Youth Club Donates To Easter Seals Dear Members, We had our youth club meeting March 20, 1988. There were 17 members and 5 adults present.

After our meeting, we had a visit from Easter Bunny. Everyone had a good time hunting Easter eggs. Prize eggs were found by Alicia Neslony, Matt Pavlicek, Dillon Locke and Shane Pruitt.

Our club will be making a donation to Easter Seals.

On Tuesday, March 29, we decided to go to the movies at Shulman Five Theaters. Everyone try to make it to the movies and we will have a great time.

March 26, we had a bake sale at both banks in West. This was a great success. Thanks to everyone who baked something and to everyone who worked.

The door prize was won by Larry Yates and Ashley Locke. The birthday cake was brought by Justin Engelke.
