REGARDING LIST OF DONORS TO CZECH EDUCATIONAL FUND Dear Editor: My check for $100 given in Bryan in November 1986 at the Czech Dancers and Performers event was not included in the list of donors to the Czech Educational Fund published in the March 16th Vestnik.

Also omitted was the fact that Viola and Harley Cox donated their $100 in memory of our parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Krejci. I would have done likewise had I known the donation could be made in memoriam.

Fraternally, Tillie Helmcamp *** This issue of Vestnik contains the third set of By - law proposals sent to the SPJST By - law Committee which met Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20 at the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

The first proposals were printed in the Vestnik issue dated January 20, 1988; the second proposals were printed in the Vestnik issue dated February 24, 1988. All of our members, especially, delegates are requested to keep copies of these three issues of our official organ (Vestnik) so that they can be referred to. Some of these proposals are rather involved and need our members to consider them, seriously; they have far - reaching consequences on the future of our SPJST Fraternal Society. You are encouraged to study them, carefully, and give them serious consideration.

Now, first let us read Article 20, page 16 of our XXIV 1984 Convention carefully.

Article 20(d) states: Recommendations for changes in by laws must be submitted not later than 60 days prior to the convention. This means April 20th! That is the amount of time you have for your changes/proposals, etc. The By - law Committee will meet Saturday, April 23rd as announced by By - law Committee Secretary Leona Macha in

Daylight Saving Time is scheduled to begin Sunday, April 3rd if the ruling remains the same as 1987; remember, the change was from the last Sunday in April to the first Sunday so that we would have more daylight, so we will "Spring" forward one hour, as they remind us. *** The persistent loud ringing or buzzing in your ear that has been driving you nuts for weeks is probably tinnitus. Caused by loud noises and infections, it's usually temporary. But sometimes it hangs on, disrupting the lives of 10 to 12 million Americans. If the ringing lasts for more than a few days, see an ear, nose and throat specialist to be sure that the problem isn't caused by a serious medical condition -- such as permanent hearing impairment or a brain tumor. Once that's settled, you may be able to get some relief when the noise becomes unbearable by using a tinnitus masker.

This device, which resembles a hearing aid, produces an inoffensive hiss -"white noise" -- that covers up the irritating ring or buzz. But these maskers cost between $400 to $500.

One cheap alternative, according to a recent study in the "Journal of Laryngology and Otology," may be a portable audiocassette player. In the study, 41 tinnitus patients substituted a Sony Walkman for the standard masking device. Of the 41 patients, 38 found the cassette player a "successful, cheap and acceptable method" of coping with tinnitus.

Some players cost less than $100. With them, you can play either tapes or white sound or relaxing music.

Recommended Bylaw Changes [Submitted -- recommendations for changes to the SPJST Bylaws according to Bylaw Article 20e submitted by Sister Leona Macha, Bylaw Committee Secretary -- Editor] *** Leona Macha Secretary By - laws Committee I would recommend the following change to Article 45(a) Seventh District: Atascosa, Bee, Bexar, Cameron, Karnes, Kleberg, Live Oak, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Wilson, Comal, Guadalupe and Lodge 31, Yoakum, located in Dewitt County.

(This is not an unusal request; Lodge No. 18, Elgin is in District II even though it is located in Bastrop County which is in District I.) Lodge 31, Yoakum is currently inactive and, if this by - law change is accepted by the delegates at the Convention, I would propose to transfer my membership to Lodge 31, get it active again with a youth club since there seems to be a great deal of interest in one. District VII is the only district to which I have belonged and I would want to stay in District VII even though I have moved to Yoakum.

Lodge SPJST No. 133 San Antonio, Texas wishes to submit the following additional recommendations to the by - laws for consideration by the delegates to the XXV SPJST Convention which will be held in Temple, Texas June 19 - 23, 1988.

Article 52[a]: Every member of lodges who are on direct billing is obligated to pay his or her bills to the Supreme Lodge for mortuary, annuities and Universal Life insurance.

Article 52 [b] : Local lodges have the option to collect local dues as per Article 50 of the SPJST By - laws.

Articles 63, 64, 65, 66: To allow those lodges that are on direct billing the option to consolidate the office of secretary, financial secretary and treasurer into one office, with the consent of the local lodges' membership.

Article 53: The Supreme Lodge should have a study made of the automobiles actually needed for the operation of the Supreme Lodge. (The original purchase of 4 automobiles was debated before the 1980 Convention) and it is understood that we now operate 8 automobiles, which doubles the cost of automobiles' liability insurance and the possibility of one of the cars having a serious accident and SPJST being sued for liability.

That the Supreme Lodge personally, with the assistance of the Vestnik Editor, investigate the printing offices and working conditions of firms that bid on printing of the Vestnik before a contract is issued.

That the Supreme Lodge price the possibility of getting a better grade of paper for our Vestnik. (The paper that our Vestnik is printed on now is of such poor quality that it is impossible to get a good quality picture printed.)

This was presented to the membership of SPJST Lodge 133 members at the meeting dated February 22, 1988 and approved by the members.

To accomplish the above, it is proposed that the offices of president, vice president, secretary - treasurer and financial secretary as elected positions be eliminated and personnel filling these positions be direct - hire based on requisite qualifications. ARTICLE 43(m): Addition to -District Director shall visit each lodge in their district on an annual basis.

The seven directors would be elected and from this board a Chairman of the Board/President would be elected. He would be the Chief Executive officer of the SPJST. The officers would be held accountable to the directors.

BY - LAW RECOMMENDATIONS Submitted by Lodge No. 17, New Tabor ARTICLE 32: Addition -After each of the Supreme Lodge Board meetings, each item voted on at the meeting will be listed in the minutes with a record of how each Supreme Lodge officer and District Director voted on each issue. This will be published in the Vestnik as part of the Board minutes.

REASON: To keep in touch with each of their lodges and be aware of any problems.

ARTICLE 46(c): Change to read -Members who have their certificates paid up in due course, according to the terms, thereof, and who wish to remain active members, must pay the local lodge dues and assessments, if any, as prescribed by the lodge to which they belong, payable annually at any time in that calendar year.

REASON: If you are sick or unable to attend the January meeting or don't know about the change of your lodge to direct billing, you could lose an entire year of activities because of one month. This would also allow new members to be eligible if their policies come into effect after January.

ARTICLE 4(e), 3: Change to read: Attended a majority of the regular meetings during the previous three years preceding the election of delegates to the Convention. DYCs and their assistants attending youth club meetings may count as attending a regular meeting for this purpose.

Newly - transferred members' attendance record of the previous lodge shall be accepted.

REASON:, If some member starts to attend meetings, gets elected to the lodge as an officer in the two previous years before a Convention Year, they are ineligible under the present by law. This will cover illnesses, moving, family situations and other conflicts.

NEW BY - LAWS (Not sure where they should fit in) --

REASON: Each member of the SPJST should be aware of how their elected representative is voting on critical issues.

Each lodge should add to their list of officers a Fraternal Activities Coordinator with their duties to be:

ARTICLE 33: Change to read (a 13) -To annually hold workshops for the training of local lodge officers each February.

1. Plan, coordinate and organize activities for their lodge members, such as social gatherings, games and family - type of entertainment.

REASON: In some lodges, new officers are elected each year. They may or may not have had training that is needed to run the lodge and need to hear ideas of others.

2. Plan to promote fraternalism inside the lodge for the sole purpose of the ideas and beliefs of the SPJST.

ARTICLE 33(b), 10(c): Change to read: The Supreme Lodge will plan, provide and direct leadership and activity programs for all SPJST youth and adults, to promote fraternalism between lodges, to learn the Czech heritage, language and the SPJST history.

Each district should add to their list of officers a District Fraternal Activities Coordinator to coordinate the Lodge Fraternal Activities Coordinators in their district.

The now standing Substitute District Director could assume these duties.

Dear Donnie: Within the past two decades, the insurance industry has become a highly technical operation requiring trained staff with very specialized expertise in the areas of investment, marketing, mortgage loans and other disciplines.

This change was recognized as a necessity for survival in an ever increasing competitive world.

REASON: Newly - elected members should assume duties immediately if this is the wish of the Convention delegates.

ARTICLE 28: Change to read: Members of the Supreme Lodge assume duties of their respective offices on January 1 following their election; however, any newly - elected member of the Supreme Lodge elected by the Convention in a contested election involving the incumbent will assume duties July 1 in the year of the election. Resolution No. 1: Whereas, the. respective District Directors are elected by their respective districts in a District Caucus and not by the direct vote of ALL delegates in assembly as a whole; and Whereas, there has been a question of the need and/or legality of paragraph "b" of Article 48; and Whereas, prior to the addition of this paragraph "b" of Article 48, the Supreme Lodge meetings were presided over by and were the duty, of the Supreme Lodge President who is elected by direct vote of ALL delegates in assembly as a whole; Therefore, be it resolved, 1. That, paragraph "b" of Article 48 be deleted; and 2. That, the chair of the Supreme Lodge meetings be returned to the Supreme Lodge President as one of his duties.

Resolution No. 2: Whereas, the growth and progress of our Society has been very good; and Whereas, a business - like approach to the Society's bookkeeping should be considered; Therefore, be it resolved, 1. That a yearly audit be made by an independent auditing firm, of all Supreme Lodge books; and 2. That the results of this audit be published in the Vestnik.

Resolution No. 3: Whereas, the prime reason of the local lodge holding a monthly meeting was to collect "dues;" and Whereas, local lodges under "Direct Billing," whether they do or do not collect local "dues" still have to meet every month; and

Therefore, be it resolved, 1. That, those local lodges under direct billing be allowed to choose between monthly meetings (12 meetings a year) or bi - monthly meetings (6 meetings a year) WITHOUT getting permission from the Supreme Lodge; and 2. That, a local lodge choosing to have bi - monthly meetings must vote to do so in the annual meeting when officers are elected and, the motion to do so, must pass by a simple majority of the quorum present; and 3. That, any time a local lodge wishes and/or sees fit to switch back to the monthly meetings, it may do so on a simple majority vote of the quorum present and this action must be reported immediately to the Supreme Resolution No. 4: Whereas, the question arises as to whom should and/or is qualified to hold an office in the local lodge; and Whereas, in some cases lodges have been hurt and/or destroyed by an officer being voted into an office just to fill a vacancy and/or is voted in with the specific task to destroy a local lodge; and Whereas, a formal guideline is needed;

Hardship Cases To Finance Committee For 1988

The SPJST Supreme Lodge at the January quarterly meeting designated the SPJST Library as a depository for family histories. They offer the library as a depository of family histories, whether complete or incomplete, so that the information will be available to other members or relatives. Copies may be made in the library.

The library has copies of Vestniks dating to 1933, some of which contain stories of the early Texas Czechs.

Copies of the Amerikan 'Calendar date back to 1879; these contain stories of Czech in Texas and other states; these, of course, are in the Czech language.

Some maps of early Moravia and Bohemia (Cechy) are available as well as a book for locating villages which are not on present - day maps.

During the Sequicentennial Year 1986, the TOCA organization collected the documented, genealogies of 32 Czechs who arrived in Texas 125 years ago; and genealogies of 47 Czechs who arrived 100 years ago.

These genealogies are NOW stored in the SPJST Library. Several families have donated copies of their family trees to the library.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: We are preparing for the 1988 Convention to be held in Temple on June 19, 1988 and, as in the past, the convention has provided assistance to members of the SPJST Society who were judged as hardship cases. We would like to continue this policy at the June Convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his/her name to the local lodge officers who, in turn, will review the case.

2. The application must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

3. The application must explain why he/she needs assistance.

4. There is no age limit for the member who needs assistance.

5. It makes no difference where the member is living.

6. The donation is not of a great sum and is for one time only.

7. The application must be mailed to the Finance Committee no later than May 30, 1988. Letters postmarked after May 30th will not be considered.

All cases will be reviewed by the committee before the convention;

Dear Members SPJST District I: Our spring meeting will be hosted

by Lodge No. 13, Dime Box on April 10, 1988 at 2 p.m.

District Youth Counselor Susan Skrabanek is planning an exciting youth program for this event. Let's have a large crowd to observe the fine work being done by all of the local lodge youth leaders with the district youth. You will be proud of all of them. Remember, our current State Queen, Melissa Victorick, is from District I. She will be with us for this meeting.

Richard Ford, president of Lodge 13, tells me there will be plenty of room for everyone and assured me that the refreshments will be worth coming for.

Since this is the Convention Year, all local lodge officers and delegates should make an extra effort to attend this meeting to hear remarks from District I Director Andrew Vavra and Bernie Gebala from the Supreme Lodge. Also, the various committee representatives will give reports on the work of their committees. I am sure all of these people will have important information to pass on to us.

Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, March 6, 1988 at Mr. Gatti's Meeting Room at 2 p.m. Pledge to the flag was led by President Annie Vahalik assisted by Nicholas Vahalik.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of our previous meeting. He also read a list of our 50 year members for 1988. They include Annielee Drozd, Margaret Haase, Bettie Ann Kruse, Daniel H. Kubena, Robert A. Kubena, Cecelie Maresh, Georgia Meyer, Julius J. Mikulenka, Dorothy Pavlu, AdeIla Pohl and Leo Strauss, Jr. It was voted to recognize these 50 - year members and award ,their pins at our annual Family Day in August.

Reports were given by Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Co - Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej.

The District VI spring meeting to be hosted by our lodge on Sunday, April 24th was discussed and committees were named as follows: Kitchen Evelyn Holy and Chudej, Setting - up Committee - Annie Vahalik, Patsy and Helen Zabransky. Members are asked to donate cakes, pies or kolache to be served with the lunch. Registration that day begins at 12:30 p.m. and meeting starting at 1:30 p.m.

Lodge No. 23, Moravia Moravia Lodge 23 held their first quarterly meeting of the year on Tuesday, March 15 with fifteen members present.

The meeting was called to order by President Albert Olsovsky after which he led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence for the departed members.

Minutes of our last meeting were read by Secretary Hattie Brossmann; also the correspondence was read and discussed.

The financial report was given by our Treasurer Eddie Vrana and he informed us that our lodge is now on direct billing. Some members have already received their bills.

A date for the Garage Sale was set for Saturday, May 7th beginning at 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., unless we sell all our goods before then. It was decided that we bring our goods to Eddie Vrana within the last two weeks before the sale, but no later than May 6th, so keep this in mind. The members also decided to have a Country Store Sale along with the Miscellaneous Garage Sale, so anything you members can donate will be greatly appreciated.

Mrs. Frances Klapuch and her daughter, Dorene Buck, were presented with 50 - year pins, also present for this presentation was another daughter, Jewel Crable.

After the meeting adjourned a luncheon was served.

Lodge

Dear Members: Lodge Karel Jonas, with exceptions, holds its monthly meetings on the first Sunday of the month.

April 3rd, the first Sunday in April, is one of the exceptions for it is Easter Sunday, therefore, the monthly meeting for April will be held on the second Sunday, the 10th, with a 2 p.m. start time. The meeting will be held in the lodge building. The recommended "Order of Business," with some minor exceptions, will be followed. The agenda will have some short special reports along with the scheduled reports. Any business needing immediate attention will be taken care of on an "as needed" basis.

A luncheon is scheduled after the meeting.

The March monthly meeting, on the 6th, started on time with a good quorum present. Reports that are on the agenda every month were accepted as given. Four resolutions recommending changes in the state "By - Laws " were passed with no abstentions or "No" votes. There were other motions made and passed to take care of lodge business.

Donations by Sisters Kortis, Haverda, Hanzelka, Helen Kelner and Nezval along with Brother A.J. "Tony" Kelner made the luncheon turn out to be a "full meal deal." The lodge furnished some of the bread, lunch meat and drinks. All who stayed enjoyed themselves.

Before the meeting, Sister Helen Kelner started "the clean - up bug" by sweeping the entrance stairs. This "spirit" lasted after the luncheon.

With Sister Hanzelka in the kitchen, Sisters Haverda, Kortis, Helen Kelner and Nazval were cleaning the mess left after the luncheon. They were assisted by the three brothers present, where needed. Thanks for all of the help, folks!!!

A sad thing happened just after midnight on the 8th of March; someone broke into our hall, stole our American flag and "death" flag, pried open the kitchen door and kicked open the library door, ripping the dead bolt off the door: It is very sad when such vandalism takes place. Along with this, our renter, B&K Furniture, lost over a thousand dollars worth of furniture at the same time. All this writer has to say is, "May the respective mothers of those involved bite them good when feeding time comes."

President Henry Breitkreutz called our meeting to order on March 13, 1988. After the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, all joined in a moment of silence for our departed member, Marvin Camp. May he rest in eternal peace.

Our visitors were Kathy Shaver, Bill and Betty Spears, Thoman Harris and Pam Wood. We hope they come again.

Secretary Rosemary Banik read the minutes and they were approved. She then read a thank you note from the Marvin Camp family and a letter from the Supreme Lodge informing us that the following have been members of Lodge 35 for 50 years, namely Rose Ganser, Willie Mae Pospisil, Olene M.

Richter and Willie Zalman. Our congratulations to you all. Our lodge now has 736 members.

Accepted as a new member. was Amy Leann Dennis; welcome is extended to her.

Assistant Youth Leader Barbara Pavelka reported on their youth meeting and stated that an Easter egg hunt will be held at the next meeting.

Under new business the membership voted to once again donate the use of the hall to the Leroy Bank Depositors for their benefit.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to little Brooke Dulock whose birthday is in March.

We would like to extend our wishes of good health to Louise Burney and Eugene Pavelka who are recuperating at home now after a stay in the hospital.

Ernest Banik's name was drawn for the adult door prize and youth door prize was won by Chip Wood.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned and all enjoyed a supper of fried chicken and accompaniments.

The regular monthly meeting was held on Monday, March 21, 1988 following the Bingo games.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order. Youth Member Kim Kacal led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silent prayer was observed for our deceased and sick members, especially for August F. Malsch, Albert Till, Cecilia Hubenak and Jody Kopecky who passed away since our last meeting.

Secretary Leonar Macha called the roll of officers; all were present except Trustee Albert Kresta, Sr. who is ill.

Minutes of our previous meeting held on February 15, 1988, were read and approved.

All correspondence received since the last meeting was read, especially taking note of a letter from Supreme Lodge Secretary - Treasurer Leonard D. Mikeska advising us of ten of our members, namely, Edwin Beyer, Lafayette L. Duckett, Fred H. Holub, Olga Huff, Charles J. Hundl, Millie F. Matloch, Lizzie Pesch, Ella Priesmeyer, Frances Rod and Emil Sablatura are to receive 50 - year pins.

After discussion, the members approved the 50 - year pins be mailed to us for presentation at a meeting or special gathering honoring our 50 year members. A tentative date has been set for July 17, 1988. Our Second Vice President Dora Lee Kopecky will coordinate this meeting or gathering.

Ball Club Report -- Practicing and 2 workouts, also remember their dance.

House Committee -- Brother Salac thanked all who helped clean up last Wednesday; thanked Brother Olson for catch for new iron doors. He also announced that Brother Ron Coker and Lionel Schultz has joined the House Committee.

Special Committee announced a Bake Sale on April 2 at Rudolph's Meat Market. Pastry would be appreciated.

I neglected to report on behalf of the Ball Club, Brother Ben Jarma accepted a check from the Supreme Lodge SPJST. District III Director Sid Pokladnik presented it and also took a picture of the event.

Decorating -- No report, but many compliments were received about the beautiful lodge decorations, also many enjoyed the music by the Czech Concert Orchestra at our 78th celebration and, if you attended, you no doubt heard Supreme Lodge President Leshikar give the enjoyable speech after the great meal served. To him, to the orchestra, to the children who presented the program, our youth leaders who gave so much time to it, our sincere thanks; also congratulations to Brother Emil and Sister Bessie Petr as "Brother and Sister of the Year" at our lodge.

The Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council met in Ennis at Lodge No. 25 with SPJST Lodges No. 25 and 135, also WFLA No. 402 as hosts.

Fraternalist of the Year Award.

President Jerry Ermis had appointed a committee consisting of Sisters Rosalee Kostom, Micky Rice and Naomi Spencer, recently, to evaluate someone for the Fraternalist of Lodge 88. After due consideration, there was no one who qualified for this award more than Sister Frances Olexa.

Comedy, "Virgin In The Castle" At Lodge 88, Houston Czech

The Hlahol Dramatic Club of SPJST Lodge Pokrok No. 88 will be presenting a hilarious Czech comedy, "Virgin in the Castle," Sunday, April 17th at 2 p.m. at the SPJST Lodge No. 88, 1435 Beall Street in Houston.

A talented cast made up of Czech speaking Texans and Czechoslovakians will surely entertain you. The actors and actresses are voluntarily giving their time and energy to make this play possible.

Please spread the word to your friends and neighbors; some may not receive the Vestnik, so we are counting on you to invite them to come.

Additionally, the lodge will be serving a delicious dinner and pastries.

There will also be music and singing.

Advance ticket sales to the play are $2.50 or $3 at the door; children under 12 are admitted free.

No. 92, Ft. Worth Current News Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Each month as we try to put together some news and activities of the lodge, it seems that a lot could be written but, again, we need to share the space with other reporters so I will try to be brief.

March 5, 1988 was very interesting while several lodges were represented at the Tarok Tournament which was held in Waco at Lodge No. 66. A large crowd with our Supreme Lodge President Brother Howard Leshikar in charge of getting together the seating, the chips, pads, to keep scores were ready. There were several lodges there from all over the State of Texas. It would be hard to tell if there were more ladies than men to play because I did not count them. But it was a great day starting at 9 a.m. to register and playing started at 10 a.m. Lunch was served by Lodge No. 66; it was good with plenty of desserts and refreshments.

The State Champion was a young lady from Lodge 47, Seaton; second place was a lady from Lodge 29,

8/VESTNiK—Wednesday, March 30, 1988 Taylor; third place was a young man from Lodge 92, Fort Worth; fourth place, a young lady from Lodge 17, New Tabor. They each won a trophy for themselves. The champion also won one for the lodge she represented.

The game itself and the tournament are very interesting and it seems to be getting larger each week.

Our lodge is proud of Brother Kenneth Kubala, a member of Lodge 92, for winning third place, also from Lodge 92, the following members were present hoping to win, namely, Brother Clem Oujesky, Sister Louise Oujesky, Brother John Paprskar, Brother Mike and Sister Sherrie Watkins, Brother Ed and Sister Evelyn Scaff, Brother Henry Kubala, Brother Roger and Sister Susie Kubala, Brother Kenneth and Sister Brenda Read, Brother Dan and Sister Joella Kubala, Brother Brad and Sister Shelia Andrews, Sister Helen Kubala, Sistef Kem Kubala, Brother Albert Kubala (former State Champion) and Brother Carl W. Zich. Each of the above has stated that next year will be different; they want to bring the trophy back to Lodge No. 92. In this game, as other games, one needs lots of luck as well as knowledge of the cards. We extend our sincere congratulations to all winners and to everyone who made the tournament such a wonderful success.

We hated to hear about our Sister Anne Polk in Houston who had the misfortune of breaking her leg. I am sure, after we get older, our bones are not as strong. The best way is to be careful and take calcium to help from breakage of bones. We also extend our sympathy to the Simmank family on the loss of their sister.

The March 13th meeting was well attended; it was also a day to hunt Easter eggs for the young and cold beer drinks for the adults; all had a good time. The small children had nice baskets and were happy when they found what the Bunny had left for them. (March 17th was St. Patrick's Day and the hall was decorated very nicely in green color.

The KCs had a dance on March 12th and selected a queen for 1988 who is Sister Bunny Tesar.

Birthday congratulations were sung to Rose Jaworski and John Paprskar; they are both local lodge officers.

A picture of a member from our lodge showing deer antlers in a contest was in the Vestnik but I will write about this later.

Our Sunshine Committee Martha Durham always sends birthday cards to members over 65 and for March, there were 9 men and 10 ladies. She also sends cards to members in the hospital.

Memorials were made to Johnny Jean Motl from parents, John and Mary Motl; also Joe and Nancy Paprskar for Joe J. Merlick.

There is a change in game nights; Taroks, Poker and other games will be played on the first and second Tuesday of each month, starting at 6:30 p.m.

We have lots of fun, so come out and learn the popular Tarok game.

Lodge No. 161, La Parita Dear Members and Readers: Our Sunday, March 13, 1988 meeting at Gateway Restaurant in Pleasanton, Texas at 11:30 a.m., was a very enjoyable occasion. In the absence of President Lloyd House, Vice President Joe Juricek called the meeting to order asking all members and guests to stand and repeat the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, followed with prayer given by Vice President Joe Juricek. Twenty - six members and eight guests attended.

Decision of luncheon of choice was decided on by our presiding vice president filled with enjoyment of good fellowship. Before the meal was served, 50 - year pin members' names were read by Tillie Valchar. Pictures were made of the six attending; the four not present, their pins were either mailed or delivered by Tillie Valchar.

Those receiving 50 - year pins were: Anna Bender, Adolph Bender, Jr., Granvell P. Pridges, Robert E. Dornak, Vojtech J. Holub, Katherine Marek, Antonio D. Matocha, Joe J. Pivonka, Vince Pivonka and Helen Zezula.

Tillie Valchar introduced and welcomed the eight guests attending.

Vice President Joe Juricek opened the meeting asking Secretary Tillie Valchar to read the minutes of our last meeting, and treasurer also gave a report. The minutes were approved as read. Audit report was also approved.

In old business, Tillie Valchar expressed appreciation to each member sending in their number of hours for the year, helping one another, 392 hours reported in all.

The meeting place for Sunday, June 12, 1988 at 11:30 a.m. at Gateway in Pleasanton, was decided on. Jim Zezula made the motion and Henry Mann seconded it.

Tillie Valchar thanked the lodge for electing her Fraternalist of the Year.

A motion was made to adjourn the meeting by Lydmil Ermis and seconded by Henry Mann.

It was motioned and seconded to set our meeting time at 8 p.m. beginning with our next meeting on April 14, 1988.

President Harold Bergmann appointed a new Food Committee for the months of April, May and June consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Peters and Mr. and Mrs. Orville Kunkel. They reported that we will have fried fish at our next meeting on April 14th. with adjourned Meeting refreshments and chicken stew.

Lodge 160, San Angelo Holds Tournament The SPJST Lodge No. 160, San Angelo "42" Domino Tournament was held on Sunday, March 13th at the Wall, Texas Fire Hall and the winners and champions are Leonard and Sandra Jansa, each winning a set of SPJST dominoes, as their prize.

The runners - up are Hubert Drgac and Louis Kokes and each received a SPJST cap as their prize.

We all enjoyed the tournament and refreshments after the game. We are hoping to see you all at the SPJST Lodge No. 24 at Cyclone on April 7th.

No. 175 Establishes Scholarship Fund Lodge

At the annual meeting in December, 1987, the SPJST Lodge No. 175, Fort Bend, established a Scholarship Fund to encourage young members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals. The amount of the scholarship is $500 for 1988.

Friendship Club Fort Worth Our meeting was called to order by our President Jo Prochaska. She led

the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present and their reports were approved as read.

We had 33 members and 1 guest, Margie Kret, present and Margie joined the club. We welcome her.

Thank you notes were read from the family of Gertrude Johnston, Father Warren, Father Carl and North Forth Bank.

Homer Johnston is now in the Westside Center on Las Vegas Trail.

Rose Steinmann, our vice president, took a Christmas money gift to Mollie Walker for the beautiful quilt she donated. She appreciated it so much.

At age 94 she is still quilting and has donated another one. May God bless her.

A note was read from Eva Dockery on their 2 - month trip to Phoenix and California. They are back home now and reported a good time and loved the warmer weather.

Mary Tesar expressed her thanks for the money gift for her service for over 20 years. You did a wonderful job and it's time for her to just relax and enjoy.

Mary Perricone reported on her month - long tour of Medjugorge, Jugoslavia. That was the most outstanding part of her trip. She also visited East and West Berlin, Germany. She visited many churches and museums and couldn't get over how clean everything was. I am sure she will live these many memories for a long time.

Frank and Merel attended the Czech Heritage Festival in Corpus Christi and said it was beautiful and a big success. They also took a few days to fish and they did bring some fish home.

Jeanie Mason thanked everyone for the Mass card during her illness.

Our sincere sympathy to Molly McGill on the loss of her brother in Florida. Mary Dunlap was in Florida to be with her sister who was critically ill. We pray for her recovery.

Anna Johnson was our door prize winner and Ima Lou La Plont will bring the April 6 meeting door prize.

Our April hostesses will be Anna Johnson, Bessie Brezina and Mary Perricone; for our May 4 will be Carrie Milan, Jeanie Mason and Mary Pavey.

It will be a covered dish luncheon.

Since there was no meeting in January and February, all our birthday celebrants were included, namely, Linda Rangel, Eva Dockery and Frank Kovar for January; Roy Alholm and Rosemary Gribble for February; and Clem Oujesky, Monte North, Carrie Milan, Maria Prill and Jo Prochaska for March. A big birthday wish went to all and are wished many more.

THE EASTER SEASON The Easter Season was observed according to the old Czech traditions.

Lent would be initiated on Ash Wednesday, six weeks before Easter.

Then, on Wednesdays and Fridays of the following six weeks, fasting (that is, abstinence from meat), was observed and most people went to church on those days and prayed the Stations of the Cross.

Green Thursday, the Thursday before Easter, was observed and honey was served with the meal to insure good health in the coming season.

Good Friday was called Great Friday

(Velky patek), with fasting and solemnity all day, and everyone went to church to pray before the statue of Christ, crucified.

Saturday, following Good Friday, was called White Saturday, and it was solemn all day until evening. Then, in the evening, a mass was celebrated for Christ's rising from the dead. Easter Sunday was initiated with joyous processions.

The children would again go caroling from house to house for a gift of colored eggs.

Legend has it that in Czechoslovakia the young men would weave switches from willow branches and then go to the homes of young girls and ask for a gift of beautifully decorated Easter eggs; and, if they did not receive one, the young lady would earn a switching. Of course, this was all in fun.

Letters From The Youth District V Youth Club Meeting Dear Readers, On March 13, 1988 the District V Youth Club held their meeting during the adult lodge's meeting. President Lee Pflughaupt opened the meeting, followed by reading of the register and minutes of our last meeting by Marlene Migl. Treasurer Darlene Migl gave a report on the car wash and two drawings we held the past year.

Then, we elected officers for the new year. They are President - Marlene Migl, Vice President - Crystal Wallace, Secretary - Darlene Migl, Treasurer Karl Pflughaupt, Sergeant - at - Arms Michelle Linney, Reporter - Paul Pflughaupt.

At the meeting, we discussed having many more meetings throughout the year and our trip to Galveston. On the trip we'll take a ride on the Colonel, visit the Railroad Museum and do many other things.

Assistant DYC Nancy Steubing also talked with us about camp; we'll be going to Camp Whagon Wheel from June 27 - 30, with District VI. She also reminded us of the District V YAD that will be held at Lodge 88, Houston on July 17th.

Elected to the office of president was Marlene Migl; vice president, Crystal Wallace; secretary, Darlene Migl; treasurer, Karl Pflughaupt; sergeant at - arms, Michelle Linney; reporter, Paul Pflughaupt. We also discussed what to do for our District V Social.

After the adult meeting, we announced the winners of our District V drawing. We also had a Pizza Party for all of the youth who attended the meeting.

Our next meeting for the Lodge 88 Youth Club will be on Thursday, April 14th. I hope to see you all there.

Lodge 20, Granger Youth Club Dear Vestnik Readers, The Granger Youth Club held their meeting on March 20, 1988 with St. Patrick's green decorating the meeting. The meeting was called to order by President Brianna Bohac.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club Dear Members, The March meeting for the Lodge 88 Youth Club was held on March 10, 1988. The meeting was called to order at approximately 7:30 p.m. by President Crystal Wallace.

Vice President Darlene Migl led us in the pledge.

Secretary Marlene Migl read the register and the minutes from our last meeting.

Then, the committee reports were read. Marlene Migl, scrapbook chairman, requested other pictures from the members.

Darlene Migl, social chairman, reported on the great fun everyone had at the rodeo on March 5th.

Karl Pflughaupt, fund - raising chairman, told everyone that if anyone has suggestions for a fund - raiser, to let him or any other officer know.

Our new Youth Leader Barbara Linney, was then introduced to the rest of the members.

Then, we discussed that our camp forms will come out next month. Also, we talked about our Easter Party next month; the Teens will also get to hunt eggs. Then, our youth leader had us list the different things we would like to do.

Our DYC Marie Stayton discussed our trip this summer to Galveston. We will ride the Colonel, go to the Railroad Museum and do many other things. She also reported on the District V spring meeting held March 13 at Lodge No. 142, Houston.

The Youth Club of Lodge No. 142 went to The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on March 4th. We all went as a group to see Reba McEntire who put on a very good show.

Everyone enjoyed the bull riding, chuck wagon races and the bronco riding. We also saw the judging of the Grand Champion Steer.

March were cake sales at the regular monthly meeting and at the District V meeting held at Lodge 142 in March.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 80, Holland, wish to express our condolences, on behalf of the entire membership, to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother HENRY G. BALUSEK, 83, of Holland, who died March 13, 1988 in a Holland nursing home.

Brother Balusek was born in Holland and lived there all his life. He was a farmer until the time of his retirement. He was a member of Holland Brethren Church, RVOS and a faithful member of our SPJST Lodge in Holland.

Funeral services for Brother Balusek were held Tuesday, March 15 at 2 p.m. at Goodnight Funeral Home in Bartlett with Dr. Mark Labaj officiating. Burial was in the Holland City Cemetery.

Survivors are two sons, Dan Balusek of Holland and Robert Balusek of Temple; four daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Mary) Lange of Salado, Mrs. Larry (Doris) Janke of Houston, Mrs. Bob (Val) Hegar of Thorndale and Mrs. Raymond (Evelyn) Spann of Victoria; 19 grandchildren and 25 great - grandchildren.

County Chapter Of The CHS Of Texas To Hold Meeting

The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its next meeting at SPJST Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88, 1435 Beall Street (at 15th), Houston, Texas on Sunday, April 24, 1988. The meeting will mark the third anniversary of the chapter which was organized on April 28, 1985.

Activities will begin at 1 p.m. when members and guests will d splay Czech memorabila, family genealogy books and records, reference matterial and other items of interest. Anyone who has items which may be of interest is cordially invited to display them and attend the meeting.

There will be a brief business meeting at 2 p.m., followed by an informative talk by Jaroslav Belik of Rosenberg, Texas. Mr. Belik, a recent immigrant, is an authority on the Czech national costume or "kroj." He will explain the unique designs of the various costumes that denote the village of origin, particularly those from the Moravian area of Czechoslovakia. Mr. Belik will have pictures and displays of actual Moravian - Czech national costumes and will provide helpful hints on how to make an authentic "kroj."

Everyone interested in Czech culture, history or Czech family genealogy is cordially invited to attend. New memberships in the chapter are invited. Ben Trčálek je synem nedávno zesnulého zasloužilého krajanského pracovníka Bena Trčálka, Sr. a obětavě nastoupil do úřadu za svého otce. Práce v kra­ janských spolcích vyžaduje obětavost, trpělivost a mnohdy nenalézá pochopení u širší veřejnosti, přesto je nutno podpořit všechny krajany, kteří mají na mysli prospěch ostatních bližních a příští generace. V tomto případě je nutno si připomenout pořekadlo: kdo rychle dává, dvakrát dává a pravda tohoto pořekadla se stane skutečností, protože každý dolar bude násobený dolarem z university.

Z tohoto důvodu se nadace obrací na širokou krajanskou veřejnost, aby si uvědomila důležitost snahy nadace a ustanovení vyučování českého jazyka, literatury a kultury v Texasu. Každý příspěvek z kterékoliv země či části světa zašlete na adresu výše uvedenou.

In the Eastern part of the country, the customs called also for practical jokes like pouring of cold water over an unsuspecting victim, etc. It was not unusual to have a dance on Monday just to give an outlet to the vivacity of the people pinned up during Lent.

Another occasion for a celebration is the Namesday or the Birthday. In this country, one's Namesday is rarely celebrated, but in Czechoslovakia, it is put on the same level as the Birthday.

On the days of popular patron saints, such as St. Joseph, St. Wenceslaus (Vaclav) or St. Anna, it is not uncommon to have bands of musicians going from one Joseph's house to another and serenading him. Also dances are often organized on the nearest Saturday and named Josefska, Vacla y ska or Annenska zabava. The word "zabava" stands for entertainment, but is often used also to mean dance. On one's Namesday or Birthday, people are congratulated as follows: V gecko nejlepgi k svatku-- Everything best for your Namesday.

All the above can be preceded by "I wish you" In Czech— "Pleji y am" or "Pleji Ti". The first is the polite and the latter the familiar form. The word "zdravi" stands for health, "gtesti" for happiness„ "spokojenost" for satisfaction, "narozeniny" for birthday, and "svatek" for namesday. As you can see, the above English translation of "mnoho g testi, zdravi a spokojenosti" is not a literal one. Learn the

1. Reported (indirect) speech: statements and questions. Unlike English the verbs in Czech reported speech stay in the same tense as would be used in direct speech. Present tense denotes an action simultaneous to the action of the main clause. Past tense denotes that something happened before the action of the main clause while future tense denotes that something happened or will happen later than the action of the main clause. a) Statement kekl (fiica, fekne): "Nemam 'eas."

Repka's 20th Year Reunion Our 20th annual Repka reunion will be held on Sunday, April 17, 1988 at the SPJST Lodge No. 88 at 1435 Beall St., Houston, Texas. A barbecue dinner will be served at 12 noon; adults, $3.50 and children, $2. Please include $1 per family to help cover the rental fee of the picnic area. We ask that you bring a side dish or dessert. Please plan to attend and bring the whole family.
