Gerlich Pursuing Studies In Rome, Italy

Another insurance workshop held February 17 in Brenham.

Insurance Seminar Held In District I SFM Gene McBride held workshops at New Tabor and Brenham along with District Director Andrew Vavra.

There were 11 sales representatives in attendance at these workshops. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us.

It is the duty of the lodge and its members to support the sales representatives of your lodge, and help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

Please urge the sales representatives of your lodge to attend the insurance seminars so that they can better serve your membership.

Vicki Gerlich, member of Dallas Lodge 84, is spending this semester on the University of Dallas Rome Campus in Italy. The university offers sophomores and juniors the opportunity to spend a semester in Rome studying subjects such as Classic Literary Tradition, Roman Art and Architecture, Western Civilization, Western Theological Tradition, Philosophy of Man, Philosophy of Being and, of course, Elementary Italian.

There will be a 10 - day trip to Greece, which Vicki will participate in as well as shorter trips to Venice and Florence. She will also have several opportunities to travel on her own, including a 10 - day break and several 3 - day weekends. Vicki says she plans to visit Czechoslovakia and England as well as places in between.

In this issue is a list of our 50 - year SPJST members for the past year submitted to us by SL Secretary Treasurer Mikeska. Our SPJST Society congratulates all of them! ***

Allow me to quote from NFCA Executive Vice President Miller: "1) Fraternalists are already a great source of good works in our society and their potential for good is incalculable.

2) Fraternalists are proud of the positive things they've already done.

But, in addition, fraternalists believe they can do more."

Fraternalism can build on what is good and promote and support a system which we, to some extent, have lost. We can use this as a connection from what was good in the past to a better Society for tomorrow. If we do, the value of the Fraternal Benefit System will be apparent to all.

Hardship Cases To Finance Committee For 1988 Submit

Dear Brothers and Sisters: We are preparing for the 1988 Convention to be held in Temple on June 19, 1988 and, as in the past, the con ■ ention has provided assistance to members of the SPJST Society who were judged as hardship cases. We would like to continue this policy at the June Convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his/her name to the local lodge officers who, in turn, will review the case.

2. The application must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

Wednesday, March 23, 1988—VESTNiK/5 3. The application must explain why he/she needs assistance.

4. There is no age limit for the member who needs assistance.

5. It makes no difference where the member is living.

6. The donation is not of a great some, and is for one time only.

7. The application must be mailed to the Finance Committee no later than May 30, 1988. Letters postmarked after May 30th will not be considered.

All cases will be reviewed by the committee before the convention; none will be accepted at the convention.

Lodge

Our Lodge No. 6 monthly meeting was held on March 6 at 1 p.m. which was opened by President Johnnie Krizan and starting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag by Sharon Hrabal and Tammi Dobecka; Sharon Hrabal then read the SPJST Motto.

All officers were present. Reading of the minutes was by Sister Barbara Hykel. The treasurer's report was given by Karen Kroll and financial report was by Brother George Straten.

All reports given were approved.

Get well cards were sent by Willie Mae Schuetz to Ruthie Sadler and Stella Perez.

We had two transfers from Mid Cities Lodge No. 183, namely, Linda and Karen Hlavaty. We welcome you.

We hope you two will come to visit with us soon and get acquainted with all of us.

Report of the Board of Trustees meeting held Friday night, March 4 by George Straten was given. He talked about the finishing work on the painting of the kitchen, men's rest room and putting up some more mirrors in the rest rooms; work was done by Josie Mae and George Straten. Decision was set to serve fried chicken for our Easter Party supper and the families are asked to bring a covered dish that goes with the fried chicken (a dish of their choice); the rest will be furnished by the lodge.

The president thanked everyone who is working and participating in any part that concerns the good of our lodge; all of it is appreciated very much by everyone. As the saying always goes, there are just a few same ones who do the work that is needed.

The meal which was served at our last month's meeting turned out very, very good; there were many variety dishes that couldn't be beat. A big thank you to all who brought food.

We who came enjoyed it very much.

The door prize at the last meeting went to Bobby Dobecka and the progressive first prize ($10) was drawn for Joyce Pinter (not present) and $9 was for Terry Hykel (not there).

Remember the Easter Party on Sunday, March 27th. The meeting begins at 1 p.m., following will be Easter program by our youth, Easter

Dear Members: After a very delicious supper, President Leslie Sakewitz opened our Lodge 15 monthly meeting by leading our members in the Pledge of Allegiance. He, then welcomed our guests Lillie Zajicek, Dan Balusek and Thomas Harwell.

"Happy Birthday" was wished to Warren Hillman. Congratulations to David and Martha Hertenberger on the loirth . of their little son, John David; he was born March 11 and weighed 6 pounds and 4 ounces.

Secretary June Harwell read the minutes from our last meeting. They were approved as read. Treasurer Pat Hillman and Financial Secretary Sidonia Svoboda also gave their reports, which we approved.

Brother Leslie appointed Joe Zajicek, Ed Svoboda and Leslie Sakewitz on the Property Committee and also appointed Charlie Svetlik, June Harwell and Jo Lee Shiller on the Audit Committee.

On the sick list is Raymond Posival, who is in the Seton Hospital in Austin.

We hope and pray by now you are feeling a lot better.

We are very proud of Warren Hillman, who played in the Tarok Tournament for our lodge. He did a real good job for the first time to play in a tournament. Louise Sakewitz, Jo Lee Shiller, Ann Balusek and Leslie Sakewitz are Lodge 15 Straight Domino players. We are planning a real good dinner for the players in the State Domino Tournament. Lodge 15 will have our local "42" Domino games to see who will get to go to the State "42" Domino Tournament on March 29, beginning at 6 p.m. Any member who wants to play, be sure and come because it is a lot of fun.

The next regular meeting will be on April 13 at 7 p.m. See you all then!

Dear Readers: Lodge No. 17 held its regular monthly meeting on March 6 with all officers present.

A report was given on the stew meal and political rally. Much of the success was due to the "good cooking" by Theodore Dusek, Sr. and Donnie Suehs. The swing was won by Jimmy Vance. Ladies of our lodge furnished sandwiches and desserts. Thanks to everyone who helped.

Resolutions of Sympathy were read for Henry Machat and L.A. Sells; to their families and friends, we extend our deepest sympathy.

Our next meeting will be on April 3rd at 4 p.m. instead of 2 p.m.

Susan Skrabanek gave a report on the youth club. Watch the youth section for all they are doing. They are a very active club.

Lodge Dear Brothers and Sisters: The March lodge meeting was held on Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m. with President Jerry Pechal presiding.

Flag Bearers Amy Kohutek and Tommy Gibson brought in the flags and led the pledge to the flag.

President Pechal welcomed all to the meeting and recognized visitors Ann Balusek of Lodge 15, Gertrude Kahlig, Della Marinik, Carole. Pechal and Freddie Schroeder. We enjoyed having you visit and hope you are making plans to come again.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, 'sales representatives and trustees. The minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved. Correspondence included a thank you card from Leo Kahlig for the get well card and a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar thanking the Beseda Dancers for performing at the CAC recently.

Sister Lillie Mikulas thanked the lodge for the get well card while she was hospitalized recently.

Requests for donations were deferred to the trustees.

New members accepted into the lodge were John Nicholas Wilkinson and Natalie Jo Doughty. Transfers from Lodge 177 were Magdalen A. White and Lanny R. White, Jr. Welcome to those named and we hope you get involved in lodge activities.

Those reported on the sick list were Brothers Leo Kahlig, Alfred Kiusacek, C.J. Wilde and Anton Motl, also Sisters Lililie Mikulas and Anita Lesikar. If there are others who we don't know about, be assured that get well wishes are also being expressed your way.

The usual officers and chairpersons' reports were given and accepted. The Board minutes were read by Secretary Wallace Jez. Tim Reese gave a report on the Taroky exchange between New Tabor and Seaton lodges. New Tabor gained

their trophy because they practice playing the game almost every night.

But there is next year; Seaton may win again! Brother Reese also, had the trophy that Claudette won at State Tournament, a first woman champion.

Congratulations, Claudette!

The teams going to State in Straight Domino are 1st -- Dan and Lillian Hejl, 2nd -- Albert Wychopen and Eugene Hejl. Here's hoping they bring back a trophy, too.

The "42" game night is set for Thursday, March 24 at 7 p.m. for the local lodge elimination. Try your skill!

The youth leader's report included the fund - raiser profits and forthcoming event, social on Sunday, March 20th. The next meeting will be the Easter egg hunt for the youngsters.

All former youth leaders, assistant youth leaders, and past youth club members are being invited to our next lodge meeting on Sunday, April 10 at 2 p.m. We could call this a homecoming meeting. Here's hoping all are making plans to come to this special event.

Ruby Bolton reported on the meeting that the Publication Committee held recently.

The lodge picnic will be held on Sunday, June 5th. the theme this year will be the 25th year of the present lodge hall. A plate lunch is being planned for the noon meal but barbecue on a bun or hamburgers will also be available for those with a smaller appetite or on a diet. President Jerry Pechal, Vice President Calvin Skrabanek and Board Chairman Woodrow Marek are co - chairmen of this event. More details as they are formulated.

The delegates have met three times to go through the by - laws and will be sending some changes to the committee on by - laws before the deadline.

The birthdays of Adeline Kohutek, Woodrow Marek, Elsie Jez and Louis Tepera, Sr. will be celebrated by each in a "special" way. There were no wedding anniversary celebrants present but I am sure some two people who belong to Lodge 47 were married in March. "Happy Birthday and "Happy Anniversary" to all members!

The door prize winners were Sisters Vallie Zavodny and Alice Banning.

After adjournment of the meeting, the 80 members and 5 visitors, in addition to the youth club, all enjoyed the chili the youth club saved for "svacina" after our meeting. It was really good! Thanks to the cooks, Willie E. and Adeline Kohutek, Dan and Ann Balusek and Youth Club.

The District II spring meeting will be held on Sunday, March 27th at 2 p.m. at Seaton Star Hall. Everyone is being invited for the business meeting, election of district officers, awarding of 20 ($5) door prizes to adults and youth; free meal with sweets and salads brought by all, free drinks, the selection of the fall meeting place on Sunday, September 25th, awarding of three sets of dominoes to the three lodges with the best percentages of membership and entertainment by Seaton Brass Band present. We are hoping the attendance will meet or even surpass the 250 last year in Lovelady. Be there and be counted. A special invitation to all Supreme Lodge officers, their families and to the Editor and wife.

The next lodge meeting will be the second Sunday because of Easter being on the regular meeting day. We are asking all to bring food for the covered dish supper that will follow the recognition of youth leaders, present and past. There will also be an Easter egg hunt for the youngsters. An

Home Lodge No. 63 Meeting

Sweet

Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home held its monthly meeting and social on March 20, 1988 at the Firemen's Hall in Sweet Home. The meeting started at 1:30 p.m. with various reports given. Door prizes were awarded after the meeting and someone with a birthday in January, February or March won a birthday cake baked by Annie Zabransky.

Various games were played following the meeting and an Easter egg hunt was planned for the children.

Drinks were furnished by the lodge as always. Individuals were asked to bring something for the lunch to be served.

No. 139, Danbury Report Lodge

The Danbury Lodge 139 meeting of March 9 opened with Vincent Hechler, president, calling the meeting to order.

Secretary Tommie Lostak read the minutes of our last meeting - and Financial Secretary Helen Filipp and Treasurer Lonnie Lostak gave their reports.

A minute of silence was observed in memory of departed member Albina C. Wagner.

It was voted to give a $200 donation to the Skrabanek Park Improvement Committee in its annual drive for funds. The committee has been instrumental in making many- great improvements to the park to make it an attractive and pleasant place for family and community gatherings and functions.

Also, the members voted to increase the amount of the Lodge 139 scholarship to $500. The scholarship is offered to an eligible Danbury High School graduating senior who is a member of SPJST. Discussion was held to make a recommendation to the By - Laws Committee. The recommendation was voted on and unanimously passed by the lodge members and is being sent to the By - Laws Committee. If accepted by the committee it should be published before the convention.

A social was held at the close of business.

Lodge No. 154 9 Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our president, Brother Jerry Milan, called our meeting to order Sunday and led us to the Pledge of Allegiance.

All our officers were present.

All the reports were approved as read.

Sister Mary Pavey reported on all the cards that were sent.

A thank you note was read from Brother Arnold Vrla of Dallas; glad he is doing better.

Brother Milan read the Supreme Lodge's letter notifying us of our 50 year members, namely, Stanley Hawrylak, Lucille Kret, Albert Wruble and Oliver Yanowski. We hope they can attend our next meeting on April 10th.

Brother Kovar and Sister Merel attended the Czech Embassy secretary reception for Mr. Hora that was held in Dallas in reference to Cultural Exchange Students and they enjoyed it. They also attended the Czech Heritage Festival in Corpus Christi and said they really had a big crowd and it was very enjoyable.

It's that time again for our annual Lodge 154 and Sokol Easter Picnic; it will be as before at Brother Roy and Sister Lydia Alholm's Farm at 6805 Pleasant Run Road, Colleyville, if weather permitting. Time -- 11 a.m. until?? Easter egg hunt starts at 2 p.m., followed by the adult's hunt.

Each family bring a dozen colored eggs, your food and refreshments.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Brother Parker Davis and family on the loss of his brother and Larry Hargiss and family on the loss of his sister. May they rest in peace.

Our get well wishes to Sister Evelyn Zacek, who broke her arm and to Sister Anne Polk (Lodge 92) of Houston who broke her hip. Hope you are on the mend.

We extend our congratulations to Sister Geraldine Brezina and her twin brother George Mikeska of Abbott who were honored at a surprise 70th birthday celebration in the home of her daughter, Mary Kubes on Sunday, March 13 and children James Brezina of Midland, Carolyn Parra of Cleburne, Jerry Brezina and Sandy Kellner. Her daughter, Peggy Dresbach of San Diego, California wasn't able to be present. We hope they have many more birthdays and also all our March celebrants.

Our ski members arrived home safely, namely, Brother Bob and Sister Carolyn Cleveland from Ruidoso, New Mexico. Carolyn came home with a knee injury and Sister Billie Jo Mason a week of skiing in Colorado and then a few days in Ruidoso. Sister Martha Milan and son Josh will leave next week to ski in Colorado. Sister Sherri Mason just returned from New Orleans, visited in Austin and San Antonio on the way.

Brother C.L. and Sister Patti Gage just returned from Reno, Nevada and reported no luck but a lot of fun!

Brother Tal Milan was at a business convention in Las Vegas and while at a casino, he saw all these SPJST jackets and found them to be the sales representatives' winners and he ran into Brother Larry and Sister Lil Laznovsky and reported a great time.

We hope the group from Seymour who attended the dance with Moostach Joe arrived home safely. The music was beautiful, such a happy group and those present really enjoyed it. The group sang with the band; that was really enjoyed. Sorry more couldn't have attended. All stayed to the last minute and then visited afterwards.

After the meeting, Sister Henrietta Milan hosted a style show that was enjoyed by all.

Sisters Maria Prill and Eva Dockery and husband returned from Phoenix, Arizona and California after a 2 month trip. Sister Prill really brought the bug home with her. She is doing better.

News

Dear SPJST Members: The District V meeting held at Stefanik Lodge No. 142 in Houston on March 13 was well attended by an enthusiastic group. Lodge 172 was well represented and I want to thank those who attended. It would be nice if every lodge in District V would have members attending and taking part in the SPJST District Society. Thanks to Lodge 142 as host.

Our Saturday night dances have been so successful that our Entertainment Committee has booked two well - known ballroom bands for Fridays; March 18, Nick Navarro played to a well attended dance and on April 29th Manny Green will be on the dance stand. Music of the 40s, 50s and 60s with popular modern music and featured dress code is in effect for this music.

On March 12th, the Texas Brew Band was well received while approximately 600 people danced to some of the best in country/western.

Please check the Calendar in Vestnik for future schedule of bands and come out to one of the largest oak dance floors in Texas. We still have the friendliest people to greet you with the coldest beer in Pasadena.

Plans are being made for our second annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival to be held on November 5th and 6th. More information in the future regarding this occasion.

We are glad to see our members who recently had eye surgery; namely, John Mikeska, Millie Hausler and Viola Jalufka are doing better now. It's also good to have Joe Machann back after foot surgery. Sympathy is extended to Lillia Mae Peter on the death of her sister living in San Antonio.

Our parking lot has been expanded now and also one additional parking light installed so that we can take care of the crowds attending our dances.

Thanks for this to two of our tireless and ever - present workers, Tommy Wallace and Joe Krenek; these two dedicated members have saved our lodge a bundle of money in maintenance.

Our new local lodge rules and regulations (R&Rs) have been updated by the membership and approved by the Supreme Lodge. It you desire a copy, please attend the lodge monthly meeting and obtain this important membership paper. Don't forget our March 23rd meeting at 7:30 p.m.

The Czech classes have begun and our first class attending ARRP driving classes will finish on March 19th. It is not too late to join the Czech classes

Lodge

President Louis Driska called the March meeting of Lodge No. 177, Academy to order at 7:30 p.m. The pledge was also recited.

Roll call of officers showed all were present.

President Driska called for the report of sick members. Jerry Tomastik was in the hospital after a fall from a ladder at his place of business. Jerry was missed at the meeting and the lodge wishing him a speedy recovery.

Minutes from our last meeting were read by Sharon Hutka and approved as read.

A thank you card to the lodge was from Mary Ann Summers; Mary Ann is up and mobiling on her own and hopes to return to full time work by April 1st. It's good to have you back, Mary Ann! Three new members were accepted into the lodge by a unanimous show of hands, those being Kristy and Steven Green and Rebecca Cox. All chairpersons' reports were excellent.

Libbie Bartek sent a sympathy card to Gaylon and Caroline Gungrass and a get well card to Jerry Tomastik.

Trustees' Report -- All trustee members were present. Dorothy Lisenbe is making the curtains for the bar and kitchen. The hall has been painted inside and stage curtains will be cleaned.

Audit Report -- All books are in good order and Josie Tomastik will buy new ledgers for all chairpersons.

A round of applause was given to Harvey La Flame for all the good foods he has served after our meetings.

The cleanup crew is to stay the same.

A motion was made to adjourn and the members enjoyed a stew supper. I can't wait to see what we will have after the April meeting!

Members of the Hill Country SPJST Lodge 185 gathered at the Bavarian Village for our second meeting of 1988. President Dwight Doeppenschmidt called the meeting to order at 8:15 p.m.

Brett Doeppenschmidt led our group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers showed all present. Minutes of our January meeting were approved as read.

The treasurer's report showed all bills from our Christmas Party had been paid.

Old business discussed was the Bavarian Polka Fest to be held the second weekend in June. Our lodge will sell food at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Hall on Sunday.

Winner of the attendance prize was Kevin Koehler.

Youth Leader Betty Doeppenschmidt reported the youth were decorating Easter eggs.

There being no further business, Roy Haag moved this meeting adjourn

and seconded by Betty Doeppenschmidt. Motion carried.

All present sang "Happy Birthday" to Ernest Jasek and enjoyed a delicious birthday cake.

On March 9, 1988, the Birthday Club Sisters met for their regular monthly meeting at 11:25 a.m. in the lodge dining room with a very good attendance.

President Kathy Trefell opened the meeting with a reading "Calendar for the Week" by Pearl Hanka, followed by roll call by President Trefell.

Secretary Rosalee Kostom read the minutes of the February meeting, which were approved with a few minor changes. Rosalee also read an acknowledgement from the Froelich family.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report as of March 1, 1988 and also thanked the following ladies who assisted her in the pastry booth on our anniversary celebration; namely, Lydia Marsh, Martha Baxter, Justine Janak, Rita Alexander, Lillie Johnson and Delores Condon. She also thanked Mary Johnson for the pickles she donated for our luncheon.

Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut reported that she sent get well and sympathy cards to our members.

We then had reports on our sick members, Anna Hoffman, an active club sister who had surgery on her arm to relieve a pinched nerve. Her arm is in a cast. She said we ought to see her and her husband cook. She is pleased so far, as she has no more pains, which had been excruciating. Mary Schenburn is being missed a lot -- she's had a bad time with her back. She had surgery on her spine and still has some rough days. We wish both of you better days ahead.

Our ticket chairman, Evelyn Mikolas, has the shingles which I've mentioned before and, after a month of it, is still suffering tremendously; in fact, cries with pain and itching. Being on her head and eyes is one of the worst places to have it. We are all looking forward to your return.

Mildred Holeman's husband, Jack, lost his sister Lorene Pierson in Oklahoma City. After her funeral Jack continued on to Topeka, Kansas to visit with his brother, who had heart surgery. Jack, "When it rains, it pours." We sympathize with you and family.

Della and Joe Miksch took a ride to Taylor to the Sweetbriar Rest Home to visit with Della's 95 - year - old mother, Mrs. Tony Hejl. They make this trip quite regularly and says she's doing quite well.

There was no old business but new business concerns our drawing for Splash Day and Homecoming on June 5, 1988. President Kathy asked for a volunteer to chair this project and who should volunteer. but Ardith McClellan and Martha Baxter. I suggest that these two ladies need help, so offer, please. So far we are selling off a crisp $100 bill (framed), a Czech doll donated by Mary Johnson and she's even sewing the costume for the doll. We will donate more money for this project and I will let you know later when all plans are completed. The ticket sale opens on April 1st. We appreciate all who buy tickets; 3 for $1.

Royal Warnasch has been ailing but he informed me that he was now "Fit

as a Fiddle." I was glad to hear that statement because he is missed a great deal, at the lodge especially. Laura Bell, his wife, is not a member of our club, but never fails to donate some money to the Birthday Club on our special functions. Thank you, Laura.

Joe Elzner and wife, Anna, are so very proud of their two great grandchildren, Kristina Elzner, 5 years old and Jessica Bennett, 14 months old. Their grandmother, Wanda Kennedy, entered them in a modeling contest at Palais Royal. Grandpa Elzner said it was quite amusing.

President Kathy Trefell has a special gift for a lucky Birthday Club member each month and it was won by Della Miksch. The Calcutta drawing was split and one went to Helen Hegwood and the second one to Alice Bily. There were three more prizes. Dinner for 2 at Picadilly given by Joe Miksch and won

by Ima Lero, a throw - pillow given by Mary Johnson, won by Willie Mae Stang and a neck - pillow given by Ima Lero, won by Esther Holton.

Hostesses for April will be Bessie Lero (chairman), Martha Walla, Josephine Bishop and Alice Bily.

Birthday celebration for March are Martha Sacho, Bessie Dewer, Kathy Trefell and Ann Elzner. "Happy Birthday" was sung, followed by our Chaplain Mary Kosut giving grace. We adjourned for lunch at 12:15 p.m.

We held our meeting on Thursday, March 3rd. President Zvolanek opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag and then a moment of silence for Nina Rotrekl (sister - in - law of Rose Kopecek).

Guests present were Bob Zvolanek, Frank Noska, Alvin Elsik, Phil Reames, Charlie Kocian, Gilbert Kalich, Arnold Vrla, Joe Vlk, Roy Alholm and Julius Podhrasky.

It was nice to see Mildred Voss back at our meeting.

After the secretary and treasurer made their reports, the following correspondence was read by Helen Vrla -- thank you notes from Helen Oates, Charlie Kocian, the family of Mildred Patak, Libbie Elsik, Frank, Jerry and Georgia Stransky, Jerry Rotrekl, Rose Kopecek and.,along with some of these thank you notes, there were donations which I will list further along.

Membership chairperson reported that Sister Rose Noska sent a nice note along with her dues.

Sunshine Chairperson Liddie Pavelka mailed a sympathy card to Rose Kopecek.

Birthday Card Chairperson Bessie Reames sent March greetings to Mary Sykora, Mary Sebestik, Adele Vlk, Annie Staglik, Berta Paryzkova and Theresa Carper. President Zvolanek once again brought beautiful camellias for the birthday girls, and we also sang "Happy Birthday" to all.

It was reported that the By - law Committee will hold a meeting sometimes before the April meeting.

Our members voted to contribute to Sokol Zizka for the use of their facilities each month.

We discussed giving Easter pot plants and mailing Easter cards to our shut - in sisters. Liddie Pavelka will undertake this project.

Easter is just around the comer. It seems like only yesterday we put the Christmas ornaments away. Yes, time does move along! It brings to mind the book "Living and Loving," written by Leo F. Buscaglia, Ph.D., wherein he stresses that one should never wait for happiness, but to go out and seek it now. He states: "The sad reality is that if we simply wait, the future finds us much the same as we are today, with the same attitude, outlook and the continued emptiness that comes from waiting for tomorrows. All we can achieve from this is the realization that so many of our tomorrows have accumulated as simply wasted yesterdays."

SPJST Library Designated As Depository For Czech Genealogy The SP JST Supreme Lodge at the January quarterly meeting designated the SP JST Library as a depository for family histories. They offer the library as a depository of family histories, whether complete or incomplete, so that the information will be available to other members or relatives. Copies may be made in the library.

The library has copies of Vestniks dating to 1933, some of which contain stories of the early Texas Czechs.

Copies of the Amerikan Kalendar date back to 1879; these contain stories of Czechs in Texas and other states.

These, of course, are in the Czech language. Some maps of early Moravia and Bohemia (Cechy) are available as well as a book for locating villages which are not on present - day maps.

During the Sequicentennial year 1986, the TOCA organization collected the documented genealogies of 32 Czechs who arrived in Texas 105 years ago; and genealogies of 47 Czechs who arrived 100 years ago.

These genealogies are not stored in the SPJST Library. Several families have donated copies of their family trees to the library.

CESAT Executive Committee Meeting The Executive Committee of CESAT (Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas) will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 1988 at the SP JST Lodge No. 29 Hall in Taylor, Texas.

This meeting will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon and will be followed by a short meeting of the CESA T branch organization, Texas Council for Higher Education (TCHE) concerning the college student loan and scholarship programs.

The April charity project is to bring 10 or more items for the Blessing Cup to the meeting. Everyone is also supposed to bring 3 or more colored eggs for an egg hunt for the club.

Crafts were constructed before the meeting was called to order by President Marcy Dorotik. The minutes were read by Jennifer Dluhos. Mrs. Jerome Dorotik read the treasurer's report, and the dues report was read by Lenice Kaspar.

Our guest, Curtis Dornak of El Campo Junior 4 - H Club, demonstrated his method demonstration on First - Aid to our club.

Sharon Borak and Jennifer Rubesh had birthdays in March.

Jared gave a report on our Pizza Party held at Mr. Gatti's on February 20th. Everyone enjoyed the party.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The Youth Club of Lodge No. 88, Houston held their last social on Saturday, March 5, 1988. We met at the lodge at 10 a.m. to attend the social. The youth along with chaperones attended the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which was held at the Astrodome. We all had a great time watching the barrel - racing, the calf ropers, the chuck wagon racers, the bull riding, the fireworks and lots more. For the musical performance, we saw The Jets. After the rodeo was finished, we went to the Livestock Show. We saw all of the horses, bulls, mules, donkeys and other animals that were there. Dear Members, At our March meeting we had 28 members and 4 visitors.

We got ideas about what to do with the money we raised at our chili supper. I wish we could go to Disneyworld.

I voted for putt - putt golf. We'll go to Wonderland Park at 2 p.m. on March 20.

Bring your basket to the April 10 meeting for the great Easter egg hunt.

And all "active" members bring your "smiles" for the youth club "picture to be taken for the Vestnik!

We made little Easter baskets after the meeting; they were Judy's idea. I painted mine blue.

I skated better this time at Skate Haven and I won a prize -- thanks, Frankie. I teased my Uncle Michael to kiss his girlfriend.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Novy Tabor No. 17, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother HENRY LOUIS MACHAT, who died Friday, February 5, 1988 in Leisure Lodge Nursing Center where he had been a resident for the past three months.

Mr. Machat was born August 19, 1898 in Burleson County, Texas. His parents were the late Joe Machat and Frances Siptak. A lifelong resident of Burleson County, he lived in the New Tabor community in early years moving into Caldwell at the age of 8.

He was employed by the City of Caldwell for 40 years. After retirement from the city, he worked for the Masonic Cemetery. He was very helpful in keeping the roadways and cemetery area mowed. He was a faithful member of the New Tabor Brethren Church, a member of the Mutual Aid Society of the Unity of the Brethren and the SPJST Lodge No. 17 of New Tabor.

He was married to Sallie Autrey on April 19, 1928 in Giddings, Texas. She preceded him in death on May 28, 1970; also his daughter, Alice Marie Watson on February 3, 1982.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m.

Saturday, February 6 in Phillips Luckey Chapel with Rev. John Baletka and Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating.

Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robert Siptak, Alton Machann, Robert Machann, Bob Brewster, Johnny Stefka and Daniel Stefka.

krAMMOriaSO the late John and Frances Lesikar Hosek. She was a homemaker and member of the First English Lutheran Church in Victoria. Mrs. Drozd was a 60 - year member of Lodge No. 32.

Her late husband, and all three of her children are all members of Lodge 32, Victoria. While living in Victoria, she and her late husband were members of the Czech Singers of Victoria.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 22, at the Colonial Funeral Home, with Wayne Kenyon, of Christ Church of Arlington, officiating. Burial followed the services in Colonial Gardens Cemetery in Victoria, Texas.

Survivors include a daughter, Bernice Helen Stephens of Arlington;

two sons, Leon Frank Drozd of Sugarland and Allan John Drozd of Floresville; two sisters, Della Riemenschnider of Corpus Christi and Annie Watkins of Houston; a brother, Amos J. Hosek of Victoria; 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Drozd, to whom she

was married for over 50 years.

Mr. Marinik was born in Wichita Falls to Steve Marinik, Sr. and Anna Shottek Marinik. He attended Temple schools and played football on a championship Temple team. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He retired from the Santa Fe Railway as chief clerk after 44 years of service. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church of Temple.

Services were held February 24 at 2 p.m. in Harper - Talasek Funeral Chapel in Temple with the Rev. Gene Hoover officiating. Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Marinik of Temple; two sons, E.S. Marinik, Jr. of Temple and G.W. Marinik of Ovilla; one daughter, Linda Blevins of Salado; two brothers, Joe Marinik and Steve Marinik, both of Temple; two sisters, H.C. Patterson of Wichita, Kansas and Helen Appleby of Grand Rapids, Michigan; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Memorials are to be made to the Bell County Crippled Children's Society.

Mr. Marinik was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple.

A longtime resident of Danbury, Mrs. Wagner was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

She is survived by three sons, Arnold Wagner of South Houston, Jimmy Wagner and Raymond Wagner, both of Angleton; one daughter, Georgia Weldon of Angleton; 17 grandchildren and 22 great - grandchildren.

The rosary was recited for Mrs. Wagner at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23 at the Palms Chapel of Roses in Angleton. The funeral mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m.

Wednesday at the St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Danbury with Rev. Joseph Kalladan officiating.

Bratr me poslal do Mesquite, Texas do to nemocnice aby me opatfili a dali leky. Take brali obrazky Ci jak se lila "X-rays" aby vedeli prof jsem tak bolava. Dnes je to ul lep gi ale jegte se musim getfit a brat medeciny a snad se to trochu zlep gi. Ja jsem mela starosti jak rnuj bratr chudak by se opatfil kdyi ja tam nebudu se postarat o nej, ale nag ]: dobfi pfatele maniele Karel a Mary Nemcovi se postarali eel)", ten Cas a vg e bylo v pofadku. Co vše se nyní pořád děje na těch hranicích, že?

Na tom světě je to pořád stejné, samé válčení a zabíjení a konce neni spatřit.

Ten Irak a Iran se stříleji a vražději, a v Israeli, Arabové a Palestinci bojuji proti vojsku a teď zas v té Panamě jsou rozbroje a nikde neni mír!

Tak si myslím, že to bude pokračovat až vše bude rozbité a lid usmrcen a pak jak to bude? Je to už zbytečné číst noviny a poslouchat televizi, už je čas aby jsme měli něco lepšího ku čtění co by nás potěšilo.

Teď bych měla prosby ke krajanům jenž čtou Věstník. Ráda bych věděla zda někdo by věděl jestli ta starodávná mast "Nonat" se ještě vyrábí. Jestli někdo ví tak dejte mě vědět a adresu a cenu a já zaplatím postou. Mnoho mých přátel by chtěli tuto mast koupit a nevědí zda už se nevyrábí či ano.

Známá obchodní firma Montgomery Ward se prodala jisté investové společnosti za přes tři a půl milionů a prý budou bývalé vlastníci to řídit. Tak se pořád věci mění. Pamatujeme se že před lety tato firma měla katalogy a hodně prodavala poštou.

Dnes je pondělí 14. a měli jsme jen 26 stupňů a řekli nám, že zítra bude zase tak málo a každý má strach, že květy na ovocných stromů zmrznou. Ti co pěstuji ovoce na prodej tak museli dávat velké kusy dřeva na kupy a pak to zapálit aby to chranilo ty květy před zmrznutím. To by pak ztratili všechen výdělek kdyby to zmrzlo. Toto nízké počasí prý je nejmenší od te doby co začali zapisovat tento den a doufáme že už se to nebude opakovat zrovna když stromy mají květ na stromě.

Jistý filmář v Anglii oznámil, že v červnu bude míti film o tom Waldheimovi o kterém se říká, že během druhé války také pomáhal posílat lidi do těch taboru aby byli usmrcení a co on zapírá. On pořád nechce opustit úřad presidenta Rakouska ale jaksi lid tam chce se ho zbavit a mít jiného presidenta. On nechce poslechnout a tak možná ho donutí brzy. Bude ten film prý ukazovat jak Waldheim bude souzen za jeho špatné činy tehdy. Amerika ho odsoudila jako "nežádoucího" člověka a nesmí byt pustěn do naší země a všude se o něm nepěkně mluví.

Asi ten film každému otevře oči neboť v tom filmu budou asi 70 svědků jenž budou vypovídat co o něm vědí. Jistě leccos přijde na světlo co dříve se nevědělo a kdožví jak to všechno dopadne, že ano?

Mnozí lidé zde jsou velice neradi, že letos nemohou míti oslavu a průvod k poctě Sv. Patrika a řekli, že budou pracovat aby příštím rokem zas mohli míti tu oslavu. Tato oslava vždy dopadla špatně neboť bylo pak moc ulic zašpiněné a leccos poškozené když se opíjeli někteří a poškodili okolí.

Tedy letos to nebude a teprve v 1989 budem vidět co a jak.

Ceské divadlo v Houston, Texas 17. dubna 1988 SPJST-Pokrok-88

pak platí profesor češtiny a další pomůcky pro vyučování českého jazyka na universitě. Také bylo připomenutu.že Ukrajinci v Kanadě si založili stolici ukrajinského jazyka v Kanadě a jistě by i krajané v Texasu neměli zůstat zahanbeni od Ukrajinců v Kanadě, kterých je určitě mnohem méně do počtu.

Každý uvědomělý krajan by se měl připojit k této akci a podpořit nadaci nejenom morálně ale hlavně finančně, aby se dosáhla vytoužené částky co ne­ jdříve.

Předsednictvo a ředitelé se rozhodli natisknout a rozeslat poštou menší brožurky s vysvětlením o nadaci a naše bratrské spolky by je rozeslaly v obálkách spolu s jejich písemnostmi na adresu jednotlivých členů. Jako první je Slovanská jednota státu Texas známá pod zkratkou SP JST, která rozeslala jako první brožurku a ohlas členů jednoty je povzbuzující. Je třeba jenom vyřešit některé technické a poštovní problémy, aby se vše dělo po­ dle zákona. A také bylo schváleno pořízení jiné brožurky většího formátu, ta bude vhodnější při osobních setkáních. Obsah brožurky bude rozsáhlejší a podá podrobnější vysvětlení o nadaci, činnosti a úsilí nadace o zachování národního dědictví v Texasu.

Nikdo však nemusí čekat na výzvu a může posílat finanční příspěvky všeho druhu na adresu Ben Trčálek, Jr., Rt. 3, Box 111 A, Caldwell, TX 77836. Ben Trčálek je synem nedávno zesnulého zasloužilého krajanského pracovníka Bena Trčálka, Sr. a obětavě nastoupil do úřadu za svého otce. Práce v kra­ janských spolcích vyžaduje obětavost, trpělivost a mnohdy nenalézá pochopení u širší veřejnosti, přesto je nutno podpořit všechny krajany, kteří mají na mysli prospěch ostatních bližních a příští generace. V tomto případě je nutno si připomenout pořekadlo: kdo rychle' dává, dvakrát dává a pravda tohoto pořekadla se stane skutečností, protože každý dolar bude násobený dolarem z university.

V ramci tohoto elanku o Aneice Pfemyslovny blahoslavene Andce eeske je vhodne se zminit o princezne Kunhute, dcefi Andeina synovce, eeskeho krale Pfemysla Otakara H. Kunhuta, ktere Andka Pfemyslovna byla pratetou, lila nejakou dobu v kla gtefe klarisek na pralskem Franti gku.
