Czechoslovak Embassy Undersecretary Visits West Area The city of West [in McLennan County, Texas] honored Antonin Hora [right], third secretary of the Czechoslovak Embassy with a nice reception in the Olde Czech Corner Antiques, February 25, 1988. Mr. Hora was in the city to talk with the Editors of the Czech newspapers, Vestnik and Hospodar. There were many ladies on hand in their authentic costumes greeting him. Among them were SPJST members, Magpi e Grmela with daughter Toile Grmela, Miss Westfest, both of Lodge 6, and Brother Joe Holasek, member of Lodge 36. District VI Held Insurance Seminar SFR Jerome Hlavaty held workshops at Hallettsville and El Campo along with District Director Matt Vanek.

There were 17 sales representatives in attendance at these workshops. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us.

It is the duty of the lodge and its members to support the sales representatives of your lodge, and help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

Please urge the sales representatives of your lodge to attend the insurance seminars so that they can better serve your membership.

The SPJST Publication Committee met at the Supreme Lodge Saturday, February 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There were quite a few things discussed, the five Supreme Lodge officers visited for a while and expressed their views on various subjects which the PC gave attention to and then departed and let the committee discuss further details, especially, pertaining to the publication of the Vestnik, etc.

Because of complaints in a letter from a certain lodge and, in person, by one PC member representing a lodge, about ads from non - SPJST organizations appearing in the Vestnik in June and July, 1987, the PC voted affirmatively on a motion made and seconded that: "Ads advertising entertainments and dances in competition with SPJST lodges would not be printed in the Vestnik."

Your editor generally thinks things out thoroughly before writing or speaking out, and, with that in mind, will have more to say at later dates about the various opinions considered by the PC and those being under consideration by other committees for the future good of our SPJST Society which will contain views carefully considered.

There are several items in this issue your editor wishes to call to your attention, both members and readers in general.

The XXV SPJST Convention Agenda submitted by SL Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, is printed for all members to see and have; and, although it has been sent to the delegates, you may wish to keep this issue, if for no other reason. It gives a good layout of what is planned for each day Sunday, June 19 through Wednesday, June 22 and the Convention Center can be used Thursday, June 23 if needed, Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska stated.

Another item you may wish to keep beginning on page 6 is the COMPLETE list of donors to the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) for the establishment of a Czech endowment for the permanent teaching of the Czech language at one of our two State of Texas universities (University of Texas in Austin or Texas A&M University in College Station), known as a "Czech Chair."

It shows the amounts donated since the first sum of approximately $35,000 was contributed at the organizational meeting held in the 1950s. Dr. John J. Skrivanek had called the meeting and all present, including your editor, donated the amount mentioned above which is not included in the list. Most of them are deceased; among those still living are very few, namely, Brothers Kostom, Pokladnik, Sefcik, etc.

Dr. John's brother, Professor Jos. J Skrivanek, Jr. (present CEFT president) has just notified us that the SPJST Society check for $10,000 and the RVOS check for $5,000 (one - half of a $10,000 pledge) have been received by him, after the published list was compiled. Remember, your contribution to CEFT is tax deductible. Can you think of a better way for your descendants (children, grandchildren, etc, plus other relatives and friends) to remember you by?

When at some future date, they visit the university where the Czech "Chair" has been established, open the book of donors and see your name listed, don't you think they would have a deep feeling of pride that their relative or friend thought enough of the future to help in their own way in this venture? DON'T BE LEFT OUT!

Monthly bills! You come across a credit - card charge from a company whose name you don't recognize.

Perhaps a billing error -- and perhaps not. The bill may have come from a restaurant or shop where you've indeed done business, but the place may be owned by a company with an entirely different name. The charge slip for dinner is routed through corporate headquarters before reaching you. If you have no idea where a bill came from, you have the right under the Federal Fair Credit Billing Act to vertify the charge before paying it. Start by trying to match the bill's date and amount with those on a receipt. If you don't have a receipt, get in touch with the credit - card issuer.

Federal law doesn't cover you if you call, so put your questions in writing.

Request a copy of the original receipt; the signature could identify the charge as bogus. You have to send the letter within 60 days of the date postmarked on the billing statement. Until the matter is settled, you don't have to pay that part of your bill, and no interest is assessed. ***

Veterans who served during the Vietnam War are the latest targets of a GI insurance - dividend hoax that dates back more than 25 years. Bogus announcements are being distributed that allege that the Veterans Administration pays dividends of up to several hundred dollars on lapsed GI insurance policies and that Vietnam veterans are eligible for these dividends. The phony announcements are being reported by well - intentioned but misguided newspapers, magazines and newsletters, and the VA is getting nearly 15,000 applications a week for the non - existent dividends. The truth, the VA says, is that the agency pays no dividends on lapsed policies, and Vietnam - era veterans don't get dividends, anyway. There is an annual dividend for 3 million veterans who kept their GI life - insurance policies in force. But the dividend, which averages $325 for 2.6 million World War II veterans, is paid automatically; no application is needed. During the Vietnam era, veterans were offered five - year term insurance, but it paid no dividends. ***

Hardship Cases To Finance Committee For 1988 Submit

Dear Brothers and Sisters: We are preparing for the 1988 Convention to be held in Temple on June 19, 1988 and, as in the past, the convention has provided assistance to members of the SPJST Society who were judged as hardship cases. We would like to continue this policy at the June Convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his/her name to the local lodge officers who, in turn, will review the case.

2. The application must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

3. The application must explain why he/she needs assistance.

4. There is no age limit for the member who needs assistance.

5. It makes no difference where the member is living.

6. The donation is not of a great some, and is for one time only.

7. The application must be mailed to the Finance Committee no later than May 30, 1988. Letters postmarked after May 30th will not be considered.

All cases will be reviewed by the committee before the convention;

We usually have door prizes. I like that; I'm always wondering if maybe my name will be pulled out of the bowl; sometimes yes and sometimes no!

47 To Honor Youth Leaders And Assistants

Dear Members and Friends: The Lodge 47 Board of Trustees and members recently decided to honor and pay tribute to all past youth leaders and assistants who have served before and since the first youth club was organized on May 2, 1965. The date of this recognition has been set for Sunday, April 10. This recognition will take place after the regular lodge meeting. In addition to the youth leaders and assistants, all present and past youth club members are cordially invited to renew old acquaintances.

We have compiled a list of the youth leaders from the minutes and records of the lodge and we sincerely hope that we have not overlooked anyone.

Letters of invitation have been sent out to those persons who are either not active in the lodge, don't attend meetings regularly, or who have moved out of the area. In the case of deceased individuals, we ask that the next of kin or some other designated person be present.

Dear Members: It's quite some time since I reported on what's going on with the House Committee at our lodge. We are busy all the time; in fact, it seems to be full time jobs. Thanks to all who helped in any way.

We have replaced a motor in one of the ceiling heaters, replaced a motor in one of the beverage boxes and replaced a motor in the kitchen vent - a - hood replaced a control in the ice maker, replaced a broken glass in the phone booth door, built some storage shelves in the store room and replaced a shorted out switch in the stage electrical system.

The front entrance wrought iron doors are installed and really do look nice. This should help much in security measures. The wooden doors are locked and now there is another lock on the iron doors. We sincerely want to thank our members who have donated toward this project so far.

Lodge No. 84, News Dear Members: When I attended the SPJST workshop in Academy, I had a nice visit with Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas. He is a Coca Cola collector, so my husband, Adolph, sent him a "Coke" item and I told him about the picture we took in Czechoslovakia. He asked me to send it to the Vestnik, to share it with you.

My husband, Adolph, and I are members of the National Coca Cola collectors and the local Lone Star Chapter in Dallas. Adolph started collecting "Coke items" when he went to work for the Dallas Coca Cola Bottling Company in 1949 and retired in 1986 after 37 years. He has bottles and cans from most countries, except China. He has signs, trays, toy trucks, glasses and much more.

Last fall, when we traveled through the Eastern part of Czechoslovakia, the tour bus made a lunch rest stop at a ski resort restaurant in the Tatra Mountains. They had such a neat "Coke" sign in Czech on the wall. I asked permission to snap a picture, so

we hope you think so, too! Thanks, Brother Jerry for telling me to send it to the Vestnik. We are so proud of it that we had it enlarged and framed.

Brother Adolph added Coke bottles or cans to his collections, from Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Austria and East and West Germany; these were all stuffed in his shoes in the suit cases.

Lodge No. 24 (Flag 1-1a11), Cyclone The monthly meeting of Lodge 24, Flag Hall, was held on March 1, 1988.

We had two visitors with us, Leonard Mikeska of the Supreme Lodge and Ladis Navratil, president of Lodge 87, Temple; also, our membership attendance was up this month. Thanks to all who came.

Members on the sick list are Rose Harvell, Albert Cabla and Ben Zabcik, and on the injured list, are Barbara Macek who injured her leg last month and Larry Posvar who was in the hospital with an elbow injury. A speedy recovery to all of you.

Anniversaries being celebrated by our members are Joe and Bernice Sebek (March 15, 41 years); Lynn and Arlene Tschoerner (March 22, 8 years). Birthdays for March are, Robert Macek (March 3), Lorraine Haisler (March 20), Kristie Waits (March 23). Best wishes to all of you for a very happy future.

Waits, Kristie of Speaking CONGRATULATIONS! Kristie's torn turkey was a big winner at the Bell County Livestock Show and made the auction sale at the end of the annual event. Other youth from our lodge, who entered in the Livestock Show, are John Paul Chervenka (chickens), Rodney Posvar (rabbits) and Alan Haisler (turkeys). These kids are all "winners" just for competing and taking part in this activity. We're proud of all of you!

The Bingo Committee was proud to present $200 each to youth groups of three of our local churches. The recipients were Ocker Brethren Church, Seaton Brethren. Church and St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The donations to these churches comes from the bingo profits as a result of all the hard work that has been done by the Bingo Committee and members of our lodge. Bingo participation has been increasing. Come out and join us on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m.

Our lodge has been in need of some repair. The roof leaks have been taken care of by McCray Roofing and the membership voted to let Eugene Haisler repair the walk - in cooler.

The Straight Domino Tournament playoffs were held February 12th.

Representing our lodge at the State Tournament in Buckholts on March 19th will be Johnny Chervenka and Billy Smetanka (1st place), Mike Carpenter and Johnnie Svoboda (2nd place). GOOD LUCK! On March 18th at 7 p.m., the "42" Domino playoffs will be held. There will be nine teams competing in these playoffs. Those nine teams are Billy Smetanka and Johnny Chervenka, Johnny Kelarek and Edwin Malcik, Bobby Malovets and Kenneth Andel, Kenneth Marek and Ryan Sebek, Wesley Plumlee and Larry Posvar, Gary Kelarek and Brian Kosel, Charley Bartek and Marvin Wilde, Milton Zavodny and Robert Macek, Mike Carpenter and Johnnie Svoboda.

Arlene Tschoerner gave us a report on the training session that was held at Academy on February 6th. Arlene and LaVerne Cabla attended from our lodge. There were a lot of good ideas and tips given at the session and both ladies said it was a very worthwhile day. Possibly, we'll be able to adopt some of the suggestions that were made.

Wednesday, March 16, 1988—VESTNIK/5 Louise Zavodny and Leonard Mikeska gave us a report on a training session entitled "Defensive Alcohol Seller and Service Course." Louise has taken the course and Leonard advised us that it would be a good idea for all of who plan to work around the lodge to take this course as a protection in the event of selling to a minor, an accident occurring as a result of driving while under the influence, etc.

The Board members will do more checking into this matter.

The State "42" Tournament will be held at Flag Hall on April 9 at 10 a.m.

Arrangements are being taken care of to provide a lunch for the players.

Door prizes were won by Barbara Macek and Ladis Navratil.

Our regular monthly lodge meeting was called to order by President Dennis Hermis at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, 1988.

Our register showed 35 members and 5 guests present; all stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers by Secretary Alice Jochen revealed that all officers were present, except board member, Martin Kieschnick. Then, our secretary read the minutes from our previous meeting, which stood approved as read, without any corrections or adjustments.

Financial Secretary's and Treasurer's reports for January and February were read by Sidon Tumis.

All other officers' reports were given.

The Sick Committee reported that Nelson Roemer, Bill Machicek, Emil Valka and Alene Kieschnick, are all doing much better now. We were happy to have Herman Ognosky back with us since he had been ill for our January meeting. He was looking well.

New members are Pamela Jo McDonald, Jodein Ann Roznovsky, Matthew James Rosilier, Aaron

Michael Rosilier and Nicholas John Rosilier.

Visitors, at this meeting, were Joe Gambil, Mary Sontag, Jo Burt, Jo Ann Burt, Jim Owens and Victor Einkauf.

Brother Sidon Tumis was recognized for being Number One in sales for District V in February; he was Number Two in State for February. All our congratulations go to Brother Sidon Tumis for his good work that he is doing for us.

Sunday, March 13 was District V spring meeting at our Lodge 142. We served barbecue beef brisket and all the trimmings for lunch.

Members who were present with March birthays are Rosie Tumis (March 24), Sidon Tumis (March 18), and Nelson Jochen (March 12). We wished them all a "Happy Birthday."

Capsule attendance prize for $30 went unclaimed because member Amanda Jurek was absent. The next month's prize goes to $40; be there and you could be the winner. Come to our meetings!

The youngest member present was 31/2 - month - old Michael Schleider, son of Bob and Pat Schleider; he received the $5 prize at this meeting.

Door prizes went to Rosie Schilhab, Dorothy Tumis, Libby Kovar and Rita Hermis.

The meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m. and refreshments and lunch were served.

Library Designated As Depository For Czech Genealogy SPJST

The SPJST Supreme Lodge at the January quarterly meeting designated the SPJST Library as a depository for family histories. They offer the library as a depository of family histories, whether complete or incomplete, so that the information will be available to other members or relatives. Copies may be made in the library.

The library has copies of Vestniks dating to 1933, some of which contain stories of the early Texas Czechs.

Copies of the Amerikan Kalendar date back to 1879; these contain stories of Czechs in Texas and other states.

These, of course, are in the Czech language. Some maps of early Moravia and Bohemia (Cechy) are available as well as a book for locating villages which are not on present - day maps.

During the Sequicentennial year 1986, the TOCA organization collected the documented genealogies of 32 Czechs who arrived in Texas 105 years ago; and genealogies of 47 Czechs who arrived 100 years ago.

These genealogies are not stored in the SPJST Library. Several families have donated copies of their family trees to the library.

War Veterans Of Czech Ancestry DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MAY 1, 1988 One of the goals of the Czechs during the Sesquicentennial Year was to gather information to publish books on Czechs in Texas. These projects are still being worked on this year. One of the books deals with Texas Czech Veterans. This book will be compiled after December, 1988.

This record is to include veterans of Spanish - American War of 1898 (Cuba), World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam Conflict; Name; Date of Birth; Place of Birth; Parents' Names; Education; Serial Number and Rank; Place of Enlistment; Theater of Operations; Any Battles Fought In; List of Medals; Wounded or Not; Date of Discharge; Date of Death (if deceased); Current Address (if alive); Paste or tape a photograph in the upper left - hand corner, about 2 inches by 3 inches in size. Be sure to write the veteran's name on the reverse side! The photo should be, preferably, taken in his military uniform. The picture will be returned after the book has been published.

Chapter No. 9, Ft. Worth Meeting

Dear Members: It doesn't seem like it should be March already and time once again for the first meeting this year of Slavonic Mutual Fire Association Chapter No. 9. It will be held at the Sons of Hermann Hall at 1200 W. Fuller on March 20 at 2 p.m.

There will be the usual order of business, reports of the officers and committees.

At the last meeting, which was in November of last year, the following officers were elected; namely, President -- Carl Zich, Vice President -- Frank Tesar, Secretary -- Evelyn Spacek, Treasurer -- Joe Gregory, Auditors -- John Mitchell, W.H. McMillen and Joe Tirk. Appraisers are Roy Alholm, W.H. McMillen, John Mitchell, Carl Zich and Frank Tesar.

After each meeting, the local chapter provides a meal. Since Brother and Sister Joe Gregory and Sister Hale will no longer be preparing the meal, there was a discussion about asking the members of the lodges where the meetings are held if they would be willing to prepare the meal. Letters were sent to the three lodges where they are held and each one consented to do so. Brother and Sister Gregory and Sister Hale prepared many delicious meals for the chapter and I'm sure we will still have some good meals prepared by these members; all three lodges have some very good cooks in their membership. The ladies are still asked to bring pastries to go with the meal.

I heard that one of our members, Sister Anne Polk who now resides in Houston, recently broke her leg. We hope her leg is on the mend and she will be up and around before long.

Don't forget that, at each meeting, there are three drawings of twenty five dollars each but you must attend to be a winner so be sure you are present.

Dear Friends: We have announced numerous times in the Vestnik how many of us are working toward the establishment of a fund to endow a chair in Czech studies either at the University of Texas in Austin or Texas A&M University in College Station. We sincerely would like to preserve for future generations our native Czech language and culture.

We not only consider this undertaking our duty, but also we are proud of being a part of this fund - raising group, and we are looking forward to a successful end.

The

CEFT UNIVERSITY ENDOWMENT The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) is continuing its drive to endow a university Chair of Czech studies at either the University of Texas or Texas A&M University. Both universities have expressed an interest in receiving the endowment and matching it. The endowment will guarantee that future Czech Americans will have the opportunity to study the Czech language of our immigrant predecessors and of our ancestral homeland.

The funding of the Chair will be the first of its kind in Texas and possibly in the nation. The Czechs of Texas will finally be able to take our place among the other ethnic or racial groups, such as the Hispanics, the Swedes, the Blacks and others, who have established university chairs to study their cultural and language heritages.

Not only will we be able to fully document our heritage but we will be able to insure that Czech Texans can study the language and continue to communicate and promote understanding with our brothers and sisters in Czechoslovakia.

Thus far only 500 out of an estimated population of 500,000 of the Texans of Czech , ancestry have ,

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday , March 16, 1988 participated in the drive and have contributed nearly one - half of the $500,000 needed to make this long held dream a reality.

Many of us feel we are the last generation who will have the interest in guaranteeing that Czech educational studies continue in Texas. This is the only way to preserve the legacy of our forebearers! And we owe it to theni and ourselves!

The Spring District II meeting will be held Sunday, March 27th at Seaton (Star Hall) Lodge No. 47 beginning at 2 p.m. Registration will begin at 1:15 p.m.

The business meeting will follow the usual format until break time. After the break, a short youth program will be held and then the business meeting will resume. At the conclusion of the meeting, we will award door prizes to the youth and the adults. We will also award a total of 3 sets of SPJST dominoes to the 3 lodges with the largest percentage of members in attendance so you can find out how many members your lodge has, and how many are present.

The smaller lodges should have an equal opportunity to win.

Free drinks will also be available for a limited time after the meeting; in addition, there will be a free meal served to all in attendance. We are asking that each family bring a salad or a sweet to help us make the meal complete.

During the later part of the meal and following the meal, the Seaton Brass Band will perform for us. The band is under the direction of past SL President Nick Morris.

For the youth who do not wish to be inside for the business meeting, we will have volleyball, kickball and basketball outside if the weather permits.

The officers of District II wish to invite all members and their families to attend this meeting since this is the year of the convention and, with all of the extra enthusiasm, we are anticipating a large attendance.

Plan to be present and visit with all of your friends in our district.

Camp T-Shirt Design Contest For Youth Club Members Dear Youth Club Leaders and Members: The Youth Department is sponsoring a special contest for all Youth Club members.

The purpose of the contest is to create an artistic design for the 1988 Camp T - Shirts.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club Activities Dear Members and Friends, The youth club meeting was held on March 6, 1988 after the mother lodge meeting. We had a fair attendance.

Cakes were taken by the youth to West Rest Haven for their Birthday Party; the youth also donated cakes to the Czech Folk Dancers of West; cakes and items to the Leroy Bank depositors, Campbell soup labels to St. Mary's School, and paper to Metallic Age Group of St. Paul's Church. The youth started making items for West Rest Haven, also will be practicing for Easter program. Our Easter Party will be March 27th with the lodge meeting at 1 p.m., youth club meeting at 2:30 p.m.; and following the meeting, a youth Easter program and egg hunt, will be held. A fried chicken supper will be served. Members are asked to bring salads and desserts.

We need all our members for the Easter program. On March 18th and 25th will be our practices and be sure

to come. In addition to other activities, we will also have a drawing with Easter items and other things.

On April 1st (Good Friday), we will have a bake sale at the West Bank and Trust from 3 to 6 p.m. Come by and get your Easter goodies.

It is time to think about crafts and talent for YAD. Sunday, March 6th, the youth club held a kite - flying contest. The judges couldn't judge the flying kites because there wasn't strong wind blowing, so they have to fly them some other day; then we'll finish our kite - flying contest.

Our club members are still selling District III cookbooks for $6.50 each; also greeting cards and stainless steel knives, so, if you need a gift, call the youth members or their leaders.

Lodge 160, San Angelo Youth Club The Lodge 160, San Angelo Youth Club hosted a Bowling and Pizza Party for the Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club on February 28th. Everyone enjoyed an afternoon of fun. Twenty - three members went bowling in San Angelo -- many for the very first time!

Following a lot of laughs at the bowling alley, the youth went to Betty Schwartz's home for a Pizza Party and Social.

Dear Members, Our youth club met on February 21st. We had 18 members, 1 visitor and 1 new member present. Our visitor was Amanda Nesloney and our new member is Weston Gaidusek. Weston, welcome to our club.

We made Valentine boxes, and these were judged. Our judges were Mary Alice Langlotz, Jewel Warhol and Dan Nors.

In age group 4 to 8, winners were 1st -- Justin Engelke, 2nd -- Justin Gaidusek, 3rd -- Alicia Nesloney. In age group 9 to 12, winners were 1st -Ashley Locke, 2nd -- Katherine Warren, 3rd -- Denise Kofnovec. In age group 13 and up, winners were 1st -- Larry Yates, 2nd -- Greg Nors, 3rd -Bill Warren.

All Valentine boxes were auctioned off. I want to thank each bidder and each buyer. The auction was very successful and each of you made it a success.

On March 18, we will have a bake sale at both banks in West. The sale will start at 4 p.m. and go until 6 p.m.

Everyone should be prepared to participate.

At our March 20 meeting, we will have an Easter egg hunt. We will also have a visit from the Easter Bunny.

Seaton Lodge 47 Youth Club Dear Readers, Lodge 47 Youth Club met on March 6, 1988. The meeting was opened by President Michael Morris.

Treasurer Melanie Koslovsky gave her report. The minutes were read by Secretary Michelle Skrabanek and Vice President Daryl Kortis read the correspondence. We had four visitors.

Our Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky reported that we had made $1,701.05 on our chili supper, auction and games night. We are trying to decide what we want to do with the money from the auction.

This month's social is to go to Putt Putt Golf Course on March 20 at Wonderland Park at 2 p.m.

Our President Keri Andreason and Leader Lynda Novak called the January meeting to order at the White Rock Skate Center at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, 1988.

Chris Coker read the roll call and, in attendance, there were 22 members, 2 guests, 10 adults (5 of them were leaders). All 33 of us agreed that we were having a great time roller skating.

Our guests were welcomed and asked to come back and join us at our next event.

The leaders were wanting some ideas for activities and some suggestions were pizza, bowling and swimming parties, and other kinds of field trips given to us at our next meeting on Sunday, February 21, when the Mother Lodge is honoring all new members. A free meal was given to all new members following the meeting.

Adam Faraizl and Steffanie Becan were stars in a play called "Invisible People." Scheduled dates and times were Friday, February 12 (7:30 p.m.), Saturday, February 13 (3 to 7:30 p.m.) and Sunday, February 14 (3 p.m.).

Everyone is asked to come to one of the performances.

It's scrapbook time!!! Time to collect all your pictures, souvenirs or whatever for the scrapbook; a Scrapbook Party will be called very soon.

The leaders also mentioned about the T - shirt contest that is going on in the Vestnik; deadline is March 31st, so get all your rules and instructions from your Vestnik.

The meeting was adjourned by all members present for we had cupcakes and cokes to make disappear when the Skate Center made an announcement that the races were about to start.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club Dear Brothers and Sisters, The youth of Lodge 88 held their meeting for the month of February on February 11, 1988. We discussed events such as anniversary of Lodge 88 (February 14), Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (March 5), and District V Spring Meeting (March 13).

Our District Youth Counselor Marie Stayton said that the District V youth are planning to go to Galveston as soon as the weather improves and also suggested future activities.

Winners of the Valentine contest were announced, and door prizes were given away. After the meeting was adjourned, we celebrated Valentine's Day with a party.

The Lodge 88 anniversary was held on Sunday, February 14, 1988.

Members of the youth club sold tickets for the drawing on March 13, District V spring meeting. We also cleaned tables after the meal.

On Saturday, March 5, youth club members went to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to see the Jets. We met at the lodge at 10 a.m.; the Rodeo began at 11 a.m. The youth enjoyed seeing events such as bareback riding, barrel racing, calf scramble, bull riding, calf roping, etc. Everyone had a good time.

Invitation To Lodge 84, Dallas [FEBRUARY YOUTH MEETING] The February, 1988 meeting was called to order by our President Keri Andreason. The roll call was read by Chris Coker and in attendance were 29 members, 1 guest, 9 adults (7 were leaders). One of our leaders, Jeri Ann Kopecky, discussed the T - shirt contest with us; the deadline is approaching and for us to get all rules and information in the Vestnik and mail it in before March 31, 1988. She also went over the idea of our 78th Anniversary Program. If everyone does their part, I would like to invite you to our skit. We all now have the Spring Fever, so our theme is "78th Spring Fever."

The anniversary is scheduled for Sunday, March 20th. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., for social hour from 11:30 to 12:30 Dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. and the meal consists of roast beef, sausage and all the trimmings.

The membership is asked to bring desserts. Our program will begin after everyone has been served.

Rehearsals for the program are March 6th, 14th and 19th. The one on March 6th is a scheduled practice for

Wednesday, March 16, 1988--VESTNiK/11 whichever group you are in. Jackie's group is from 3 to 4 p.m., Lynda's group from 5 to 6 p.m., and Justine's group from 6 to 7 p.m. at the lodge.

A hot dog dinner is planned for the second practice on Monday, March 14th at 6:30 p.m. at our lodge. This is for the whole family for both groups and individual talent numbers; with final rehearsal on Saturday, March 19th at 10 a.m. at the lodge. Bring a sack lunch, for we will have a meeting during this time. If you are not in the program, you are asked to attend this meeting; the Easter bags will be handed out to decorate for Easter bag contest, at the Easter Party.

April 2nd, the Easter Picnic and Egg Hunt at Lakewood Park at 10 a.m., will be hosted by the Junior Club.

Decorated Easter bags (baskets) will be judged, and games will be played for all Junior youth. Lunch will also be provided.

It's also that time to be thinking and getting started on those YAD projects.

The Mother Lodge is planning their annual Bake Sale at Rudolph's. After the Easter Party, plan to go by the Meat Market and pickup some goodies for the holiday.

The Resolution Committee wishes to express our condolences on behalf of Jaromir Lodge West No. 54 entire membership, to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister MRS. J.A. [CHRISTINE] SOUKUP, 52, of West, who passed away early Sunday morning, February 28, 1988 at Hillcrest Hospital, Waco.

Rosary was recited at 8 p.m.

Monday, February 29 at Aderhold Funeral Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 1 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption with Msgr. George Doskocil as celebrant. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Mrs. Soukup was born February 21, 1936 near West to Ludvik and Mary Gerik. She married Johnnie A. Soukup in West on November 23, 1957.

She was a member of St. Mary';, Catholic Church of the Assumption, Ladies Altar Society, and she was a faithful member of SPJST Lodge 54 since 1959.

She was preceded in death by her father and one sister.

Survivors include her husband, mother, one son, two daughters, two brothers, three sisters, two grandsons, plus several nieces and nephews.

Of Sympathy Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No . 80, Holland, wish to express our deepest sympthy to the family of our departed lodge brother THOMAS L. GAINES, 77, of Holland, who died February 25, 1988 in a Temple hospital.

Brother Gaines was the son of the late Grover Cleveland and Louella Gaines. He was born in the Joe Lee community. He lived in Central Texas all his life. He was employed by American Desk and Manufacturing Company from 1935 until the start of World War II. He joined the Merchant Marines and later the Navy. After World War II, he returned to American Desk and worked there for many years. He served as a Bell County constable in Precinct 2 for one term. Prior to his retirement, he farmed in the Holland area.

Funeral services for Brother Gaines were held Saturday, February 27, at 2 p.m. at Goodnight Funeral Chapel in Bartlett with Rev. Jay Thomas officiating. Burial was in the Holland City Cemetery.

Survivors are four brothers, Rex Gaines of Holland, Raymond Gaines of Lexington, Elmer Gaines of Hempstead and Billy Gaines of La Cresento, California; four sisters, Ruth Gilson of Riverside, California, Doris Hooper of Waco, Nelta Perry of Galveston and Jean Koch of Butler, Pennsylvania.

May our lodge brother rest in eternal peace.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott, with the Rev. Gary Geurtz as celebrant. Interment was in Fatima Cemetery near Abbott.

Mrs. Vybiral was born February 7, 1929, near Penelope and lived in the Abbott area since 1948. She was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

She married Ernest Vybiral on October 16, 1948, in Penelope.

Survivors include her husband, three sons, one daughter, her mother, two brothers, three sisters, five grandchildren, plus several nieces and nephews.

Sister Vybiral joined Lodge 54 in 1945 and was a faithful member.

The officers and members of SPJST Lodge No. 25, Ennis, Texas, send their deepest sympathy to the family of FRANK W. KUBIN. Mass of Christian Burial for Frank W. Kubin was celebrated at 10 a.m.

Wednesday in St. John's Catholic Church with Rev. Ennie Torres as celebrant. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Tuesday in Keever Chapel. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary with the following serving as pallbearers: David Kubin, Jeff Kubin, Frank Slovacek, Thomas Slovacek, Louis Vavra and Eugene Kubin.

Mr. Kubin died Monday afternoon at the Baylor Medical Center in Ennis after a short illness.

He was born November 24, 1921, in Ennis, to Frank J. and Bessie Vrla Kubin. He was reared in Ennis and attended school at Pea Ridge and St. John's. He was engaged in farming in the Creechville community. He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater of War during World War II. After his discharge he returned to farming.

In 1979 he went to work for the U.S. Post Office in Ennis. He retired in 1987. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the SPJST No. 25 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include two brothers, Leslie Kubin and Willie Kubin, both of Ennis; three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Vavra of Kaufman, Mrs. Mildred Cepica of Ennis and Mrs. Angie Slovacek also of Ennis; 19 nieces and nephews.

One brother, Joe Kubin, preceded him in death.

May our departed brother rest in peace forever.

Memoriam

We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of our dear friend BUSTER KUDER, who passed away this past weekend.

Johnnie (Buster) was a lifelong resident of Brazos County, was a retired heavy equipment operator and a farmer. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Bryan, a member of American Legion Post 159, also a member of our SPJST Lodge 39.

He served in World War II as a private first class.

Survivors include his lovely wife, Aline Kuder of Bryan; two sons, Johnnie Kuder, Jr. of College Station and Charles Kuder of Bryan; one daughter, Beverly Hoke of College Station; a brother, Willie Kuder and a sister, Lottie Pavlas; two in - laws, Walter Hoke and Lynnette Kuder and six grandchildren.

Buster was a longtime member of Lodge 39 and has a 100 percent SPJST family. He was one of the members who helped plan, clear land and build our present hall building. We had many good times together during much hard labor. Everyone loved Buster; he was so much fun and there was never a dull moment when he was around. We will all miss him very much. We know he's gone to a beautiful place, called heaven, where he is happy with our Savior and Redeemer. How wonderful it is that Jesus died for all our sins, and we can all be assured of eternal life. We love his family and will support and pray

for them in their great loss. God bless you all.

Of Interest Spouse Should Know Financial Picture If your spouse always pays the bills, fills out the tax forms and handles other family finances, you could be seriously uninformed about your financially picture.

While it used to be that many wives were in this situation, it's now just as likely to be a husband, says family economics expert Nancy L. Granovsky.

Although having each spouse specialize in certain chores can be a time - saver, finances are important enough that both should have a working knowledge of their situation, she adds.

It's very difficult to consider the possibilities of divorce or the death of a spouse, yet these two events cause the most financial devastation for a family, observes the Texas A&M University AES specialist.

While gathering materials together to prepare this year's income taxes, she suggests that both spouses review their financial picture, make sure they have the answers to the following questions: Are family assets, including bank accounts, available to both spouses so they won't be tied up in probate in the case of a partner's death?

Do both spouses have current wills that take into account guardianship of minor children in the event both of you die?

Do each of you have adequate life insurance protection to ensure the maintenance of the household?

Do you each have credit established in your own names so that you won't be caught without a credit rating?

What are your rights to group health insurance continuation through your spouse's employer?

What pension or survivors' benefits would you be entitled to from your spouse's employer, the Veteran's Administration or Social Security?

Can you easily locate important papers, including past. tax returns, deeds, insurance policies, wills, marriage and birth certificates?

Do you both know the location of the key to your safety deposit box and have a separate list of its contents?

Head and neck rolls, arm circles, trunk twists, leg lifts and other stretching routines will keep your bones and joints limber.

Aerobic exercises strengthen the heart and cardiovascular system. Brisk walking, dancing, swimming, jogging, water exercise and biking all increase your heart and breathing rates and improve the circulatory system.

Walking is one of the best and safest exercises for older adults. Brisk walking strengthens the heart and lungs and improves endurance.

Effects of exercise -- Normal responses to exercise will be rapid breathing and an increased heart rate; moderate sweating; and mild muscle aches and tenderness during the first week of exercise.

Abnormal reactions to exercise may indicate you are overexerting yourself incorrectly or have physical limitations that need to be discussed with a physician. Examples are severe shortness of breath; difficulty in breathing; chest pain, pressure or tightness; dizziness or fainting; cramps, severe pain or muscle aches; nausea; and severe prolonged exhaustion after exercise.

An orthopedic surgeon can help determine your limitations and prescribe a fitness program that is best for you. By recognizing any existing problems, and designing a program for your abilities and comforts, you can exercise towards a longer, healthier life.

Nora Hehman was the Valentine Sweetheart at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I for February.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I held their Valentine Party in February for the residents. Tables were decorated with pink carnations and pink hearts.

Nora Hehman guessed how many hearts were in a jar to become Valentine Sweetheart for the Day. The prize was a big Valentine candy heart.

Fred and Cindy Krueger delighted the residents with their singing and accordian playing. The residents would tap their feet and sing along.

Everyone got a Valentine heart to wear and chocolate hearts for favors; then refreshments of cookies, ice cream and punch were served to all the guests.

Couple Honored On Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Skloss, both fifty - year SPJST members, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary December 27, 1987 with a catered reception at the Vanderbilt Community Center. The couple was married December 27, 1937 in Victoria. Approximately 150 relatives and guests registered from Houston, San Antonio, Port Alto, Crockett, Lake Jackson, Rockport, Portland, Placedo, Port Lavaca, Victoria, Yorktown, Edna, Ganado, Lolita, La Salle, Inez, La Ward, San Marcos, El Campo, Vanderbilt; and Leland, Mississippi. The 1988 Palacky School reunion will be held Sunday, April 17 (all day) at the VFW Hall, Circleville (4 miles south of Granger, Hwy. 95 South at the old Circleville School Building).

Registration begins at 10 a.m. with a covered dish buffet meal at 12. Each family is asked to bring enough food for their group. Plates, cups, bread, tea, eating utensils and napkins will be furnished. The bar will be open in the afternoon. Josi and Fred Strmiska (859 - 2780) will be in charge of the kitchen. Music will be provided in the afternoon and evening for dancing and visiting; you may also bring your cards and dominoes as well as your old scrapbooks and pictures to share.
