Winners vs. Losers The difference between a winner and a loser: A winner will admit he is wrong when he makes a mistake; a loser will say "It wasn't my fault." A winner goes through a problem; a loser goes around it and never gets past it. A winner says, "I'm good, but not as good as I ought to be;" a loser says, "I'm not as bad as a lot of other people." A winner says, "There ought to be a better way to do it." A loser says, "That's the way it always has been done."

Tuesday, February 23rd your editor attended a sales seminar conducted by SFR Jim Wiest and District III Director Sid Pokladnik at Lodge No. 66. The group of sales representatives present were given some very important new pointers about our SPJST insurance program and had a very good opportunity to ask questions about pertinent facts as they now apply to the sales of insurance.

Needless to say, the sale of insurance has been much more complicated now with new evidence of life expectancy due to smoking and other causes of the shorter length of life of people due to these causes. We have reached an era of more blood testing and other laboratory tests becoming necessary, especially on larger policies. Brother Wiest brought out a very important item in closing: "We really should be contacting members we already have and checking their life insurance and signing up their children, grandchildren and relatives." They know about SPJST and believe in its life insurance and other programs and, therefore, provide us with a much better chance to sell them our products. *** The Vestnik issue dated February 10, 1988 carried two pictures of Sister Dorothy Tomasek, assistant to the Secretary - Treasurer, who has served our SPJST for 35 consecutive years!

That is indeed a record very seldom matched by an employee of an organization and certainly speaks admirably of her loyalty and sincere, devoted work. This writer remembers her from all the SPJST Conventions since 1952 when she was always on hand to assist the officers of our Supreme Lodge in their duties at the conventions. The work of persons of her type is certainly of great value to our Society. Her value definitely was not overlooked by members for many years; for instance, Brother John Stasa suggested her as a candidate for a Supreme Lodge officer at the time when Brother Raymond Urbanovsky retired; however, the offices of secretary and treasurer were combined, instead. She surely deserves the recognition she received and is to be congratulated. On page 4 of that same issue are more pictures of other faithful employees.

At some time in 1987, at one of our gatherings, a member came to this editor and asked how our Society treated officers and employees who retire after long years of faithful service and, while we were discussing this, remarked: "This is something our

Convention could think about: the organization I work for has a program where the organization continues paying the health insurance premiums for an employee who retires providing they have worked for a continuous number of years (20, I think) and is 55 years of age when they retire. Our SPJST could think about such a plan." Yours truly somewhat forgot about the conversation until that picture and article brought it back to mind. It may be worth consideration! *** Few drinkers, until a short time ago, suspected that many beers, wines and distilled spirits contain urethane -- a chemical byproduct of the manufacturing process. Urethane is a proven carcinogen; it causes cancer in laboratory animals, and government studies show that urethane content can range from zero in some beverages to much more in others, so last year a voluntary agreement to limit urethane in whiskies to no more than 125 parts per billion was reached. Because most whiskies are aged, it may be years before all bottles on the shelves have urethane levels that low, and in late January, American wine producers agreed to bring their levels down to an average of less than 15 parts per billion for 1988 table wines and 60 parts per billion for 1989 dessert wines.

Consumers who want to know how much urethane is in their favorite drink can find out from a new booklet published by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which lists the urethane content of more than 1,000 brand names of beer, wine and spirits. *** Two women last December after their truck became stuck in 3 feet of snow on a remote Arizona road, trapping them for 10 days actually were lucky. They suffered severe frostbite -- but they lived, surviving on peanuts and a sweet roll. If you must travel in a winter storm, you should consider the possibility that you, too, could end up stormbound in your vehicle for several hours or days.

Carry the following "storm kit" in your automobile just in case: Blankets or sleeping bag; matches, wrapped in foil or otherwise protected from dampness; candles; a box of facial tissues; a roll of paper towels; extra coats and sweaters; high - calorie, non - perishable foods such as granola and peanut butter; a compass and road maps, a pocketknife; a first - aid kit with such medical essentials as,' bandages and aspirin; a camp shovel; a bag of sand; a flashlight or signal light; a windshield scraper; booster cables; tow chains; a fire extinguisher; a catalytic heater, available at camping supply outlets, and a small, camp - size ax. Preassembled auto - emergency kits are widely available from many mail - order firms and hardware stores, but these kits typically contain only a few items to help get your vehicle back on the road, such as jumper cables, a compressed - air tire inflater and flares. You're probably better off assembling your own storm kit. ***

Weather: "If you don't like the weather, stick around; it will change in five minutes." For the most part, however, the weather in Texas changes for the better. There's rarely a shortage of good, sunny weather, and that makes life in Texas much more tolerable and makes trips to lakes, rivers and the coast much more enjoyable.

Indeed, a lot of elements make up this state we call Texas. And we should be thankful for them all.

Submit Hardship Cases To Finance Committee For 1988 Dear Brothers and Sisters: We are preparing for the 1988 Convention to be held in Temple on June 19, 1988 and, as in the past, the convention has provided assistance to members of the SPJST Society who were judged as hardship cases. We would like to continue this policy at the June Convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his/her name to the local lodge officers who, in turn, will review the case.

2. The application must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

3. The application must explain why he/she needs assistance.

4. There is no age limit for the member who needs assistance.

5. It makes no difference where the member is living.

6. The donation is not of a great some, and is for one time only.

7. The application must be mailed to the Finance Committee no later than May 30, 1988. Letters postmarked after May 30th will not be considered.

All cases will be reviewed by the committee before the convention; none will be accepted at the convention.

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, February 14, 1988 at Mr. Gatti's meeting room with President Annie Vahalik presiding over the meeting. Janell Chadej led the members in the pledge to the flag.

A Resolution of Sympathy was read for our departed member, Jerome E. Drozd, Sr. Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting were approved.

Correspondence followed.

Erwin Holy reported on the local lodge workshop he and his wife, Evelyn, attended in Academy on February 6th.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Co Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej gave reports.

President Annie Vahalik reminded the members that our lodge will host the District VI spring meeting on Sunday, April 24th at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville.

Committees will be named at the next meeting.

It was agreed to hold our next meeting on Sunday, March 6th, the first Sunday of the month beginning at 2 p.m. at Mr. Gatti's with refreshments and lunch to be served as usual.

The meeting adjourned.

Our second meeting of this year was held February 7 at 1 p.m. President Johnnie Krizan started the meeting and then called on Tammi Dobecka to lead the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and she also read the SPJST Motto.

All members remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed members, Sister Viola Parma and Brother John Lovecky. Sister Parma was very active in our lodge, she always brought her 3 children to the club meetings and other functions that were held for the youth club while I was youth leader at that time from 1959 to 1970. We express our sincere sympathy to all the families. May they both rest in peace.

The minutes were read by Sister Hykel who also gave the treasurer's report for Sister Karen Kroll, who was absent due to the arrival of her precious baby girl born February 3rd.

Brother George Straten gave his financial report.

All reports were given and approved.

We had one transfer from Lodge 54, Sister Mary C. Gerik, mother of Sister Mary Marek. We welcome her and hope she will come to our functions that are planned throughout the year.

Sympathy cards were sent to the families of John Parma and John Lovecky. Get well cards were sent to Sister Joe Veselka and Joe Mazanec, Jr. Vicki Anderson and her daughter, Amalie, were both in a car wreck recently at Irving, Texas and both are doing well. The others are Lydia Dobecka and Celia, Bradley Kroll, Joshua Hykel and Annie Schroeder.

Youth Club report was reported by Assistant Peggy Dobecka in the absence of Willie Mae Schuetz. Peggy invited all to their Valentine Party that was held Friday night, February 12 at the lodge.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees George Straten gave his report of the board meeting that was held Friday, February 5. He stated that they did some painting on the ladies room and some other finishing work that was needed. They also put up the color TV on the wall to be seen by all. The 19 inch TV was furnished by SPJST Lodge 6, Inc; this will be good entertainment for all of us. Thanks!

The full meal deal was prepared by the Robert Dobecka family at our last noon dinner meeting with coffee, tea and sweets; it was good meal and

Lodge No. 9 Meets

The Snook SPJST Lodge met for their regular monthly meeting February 3rd at 7:30 p.m.

Betty Schoenemann led the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present except Lyndon Jakubik and Matt Jakubik.

The lodge presented Melissa Victorick and Rebekah See with plaques for representing our lodge and district as State Queen and Duchess.

It was decided to let Ernest Jakubik and Richard Vajdak check on repairing the barbecue pit.

We will have our annual chicken and dumpling supper on April 16th, so everyone keep this date open for fun and fellowship.

Andy and Lola Vavra came to visit our lodge. We support Andy as our District I director. We wish him well at the Convention.

Our next meeting will be March 2nd at 7:30 p.m.

We urge more of our members to come and get involved.

No. 13, Dime Box

Lodge

Dear Members: The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 13 was held on February 21 at 2 p.m. President Brother Ricky Ford called the meeting to order. After the Pledge of Allegiance, there was a moment of silence in memory of our deceased lodge brothers Albert Blaha and Joe Matejcek.

The roll call of officers was held; there were 10 present and 3 absent.

The minutes and treasurer's reports were approved as read.

There will be a committee formed by two persons from the lodge, one person from the firemen and one from the Catholic church to get an estimate on the auction stage on the outside and then bring it before the lodge for a vote.

The youth club will rake the leaves on the ground and the hall will pay them $20 each time.

The spring meeting will be held at Dime Box on April 10 at 2 p.m. The members of Dime Box are asked to bring chips, dips and/or desserts. The meat will be furnished by our lodge.

Seaton had all the odds on their side -- more experience playing at home, and New Tabor's trophy in their position. Seaton had come to New Tabor and won. New Tabor went to Seaton and won.

Now that we have our traveling trophy at home where it belongs, we can go forward and challenge other lodgesin Team Tarok Tournaments.

But first, let's look at high points of of the tour. Lydia Odstrcil took top honors at the tour by getting high point tournament player, high point player from New Tabor, and high point player one game from New Tabor. New Tabor won every one of the four rounds. The winning team members were Carol Petty, Gladys Hejl, Lydia Odstrcil, Susan Skrabanek, James E. "Bubba" Sebesta, Randy Gaas, Wanda Ihlenfeldt and team captain, Glen Paul. Debra Sebesta went as an alternate and New Tabor won that, also. Some players did better than others, but they stayed together and played as a team and brought our trophy home.

If you are wondering how New Tabor did so good, for a lodge that, until June of 1986, hadn't even heard of Tarok, except for members remembering their parents playing a long time ago, it's simple. We called Seaton, their members loaded up and came to New Tabor and taught us how to play Tarok. The members of Lodge 47,namely, Dan Hejl, Lillian Hejl, Tim and Claudette Reese,took the time and effort to show us how to play. They came and helped us make a Tarok video that is at the Supreme Lodge now for use for other lodges in the SPJST who might not be as lucky as New Tabor and might not have a Seaton willing to help and teach another lodge something that is second nature to them.

A lot of factors helped New Tabor win Saturday, February 20, 1988 in Seaton. But, if it weren't for Seaton, New Tabor wouldn't have a Team Tarok trophy and probably wouldn't have started playing Tarok.

When you talk of fraternalism as a major ingredient in the SPJST, I can't think of a better example than New Tabor and Seaton. We, as members of New Tabor, thank the members of

Dear Members: March 6th, 2 p.m., seven (7) and one - half eh) hours after the fall of the Alamo 152 years ago, Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its third monthly meeting of 1988. The meeting will be held in the lodge building. A standard "Order of Business" will be followed.

The agenda will have several items that need immediate attention along with the regular items.

After the meeting a luncheon is planned.

The February monthly meeting, on the 7th, started on time with a good small quorum present. The cold bad weather was the villain that helped shorten the meeting. This left several questions that will have to be on the March agenda. The Audit Committee, chaired by Sister Helen Kelner and assisted by Sister Barbara Tichacek, took a hard look at the lodge books and found the lodge finances in good condition. Sister Kelner, while preparing the Board of Trustees' report, made extra copies of the report so members could follow. All reports were accepted as given.

Sister Frances Hanzelka won the door prize.

Close to the fire was the rule of the day and this was where the luncheon tables were placed. The lodge furnished some of the bread, ham and fixings for sandwiches. Sisters Hanzelka, Helen Kelner, Brdecka and Nezval, along with Brother A.J. "Tony" Kelner, furnished the rest to fill the table. Even with the cold, those who stayed enjoyed the fellowship.

Sisters Frances Hanzelka and Helen Kelner stayed to help with the clean up. Thanks Sisters! This always makes

things easier for those of us who have to stay.

Brother Albert Lupik was busy mopping up water off the plastic sheets that protect the floor from the leaks in the roof. Brothers Lupik and Laidolf have done "Yoman's Service" since the roof began to leak to a point that the floor had to be covered. A new roof is around the corner; a contract has been signed and the only thing holding back is the cold and wet weather.

A reminder, the April monthly meeting will be held on the second Sunday, the 10th, because of Easter Holiday weekend.

President Henry Breitkreutz called our meeting to order on February 14, 1988 and our youth, Jana Breitkreutz and Jesika Tierce, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Then the membership stood in a moment of silence, for our departed Sister Vlasta Pavelka. May she rest in eternal peace.

Our visitors to the meeting were Bill and Beth Spears, Kathy Shaver and Thomas Harris; we hope they enjoyed the meeting and fellowship and hope they come, again.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Rosemary Banik which were approved as read.

She then read a thank you note from the Vlasta Pavelka family and also gave the treasurer report.

There was no youth report because both youth leaders were absent due to other commitments, however, it was stated that the youth will have a kite flying contest at the March 13th meeting, if the weather permits.

New members accepted were Bobby Tlustos, Daniel L. Grooms, Joseph L. Grooms, Peggy Sue Grooms and Daniel L. Grooms, Jr. Those having birthdays in February were Jamie Williams and Ernest Banik.

We were sorry to hear that Marvin Camp was in the hospital; we hope he is feeling better.

The membership agreed to let Mart High School use of the hall for their "Prom" and also to donate the use of the hall for the benefit of the Leroy Bank Depositors on Friday night, March 11, 1988.

The trustees reported that their elected officers are President Vernon Wood, Jr., Vice President Albert Banik and Secretary Rosemary Banik.

Lodge No. 40, El Campo-Hillje The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 40, El Campo Hillje, was held on Monday, February 15, 1988 at 9:30 p.m. following the Bingo games.

Emil Havlak, member of the President Rita Vanek called the, Auditing Committee, stated that the meeting to order. Youth member Kim books balanced to a penny.

Lodge No. 49, Rowena Members of Pokrok Rowena Lodge No. 49 held their first quarterly business meeting February 3, 1988 in the lodge hall. President Elizabeth Walther brought the meeting to order at approximately 7 p.m.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and accepted. Financial Secretary Beverly Teplicek read a letter of thanks from the William Urbanek family for the memorial sent to the local SPJST Building Fund.

Vice President James Teplicek gave a financial report on the building fund.

Beverly Teplicek then gave the lodge financial report.

President George Pauling called our meeting to order at 2:30 p.m. on February 21st. The flags were presented by Larry Yates, Bill Warren and Michael Warren who led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto.

All officers were present. The minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read some correspondence on the tournaments which we have now in progress. The Straight Domino local practice is held every Monday at 7 p.m. and the last practice was Monday, February 22nd.

The "42" Domino practice will start Monday, February 29 at 7 p.m. If anyone is interested in playing, they should come to the hall.

Sister Langlotz read the minutes of the February Board meeting and reported there will be new carpet in the

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, March 2, 1988 entrance of the hall and on the stage.

The Entertainment Committee report by Sister Polly Gaidusek reported that we will be serving barbecue on bun, potato salad, beans, pickles, onions, dessert, coffee and tea for the Taroky Tournament held March 5th.

For our March 20 meeting, the committee will furnish chili dogs, chips and coffee. The members are to bring desserts.

Sympathy cards were sent to Leslie Dungan and Robert Pavelka. Get well cards were sent to Jessie Briggs, Dorothy Gerlich, Willie Rejcek, Frank and Philamene Miller, James and Georgia Pavlicek and Kaylee Pruitt.

Youth Leader Gladys Yates reported there were 18 members, 1 visitor and 1 new member. Today they had their Valentine boxes which were judged by Sister Mary Alice Langlotz, Sister Jewel Warhol and Brother Daniel Nors. Then they were auctioned off to the highest bidders which brought in a nice sum. The youth club will have a bake sale on March 19th.

The YAD will be hosted by Lodge 66 on June 26th. There will be an Easter egg hunt at our next monthly meeting on March 20th.

President Pauling presented Sister Parma with a check for the Trust Fund; Sister Parma thanked him.

There were nine members of Lodge 66 who attended a local lodge forum/workshop at Lodge 177, Academy. This was a very educational workshop and we learned a great deal about the operation of the most successful lodges. We received many nice ideas from the presenters who volunteered to share their successes with us. We thank the Supreme Lodge and Lodge 177, Academy for their hospitality and making this event possible.

Ernest L. Petru was accepted as a new member.

Sister Emma Ceska asked to change the April meeting due to the District III meeting which would be on our meeting day. The April meeting date was changed and will be on April 10th.

Mark your calendar. It was discussed to have a chartered bus for the District III meeting. If anyone is interested in going, they can contact Brother Johnnie Gaidusek.

Our door prize winner was Joe Pruitt.

Dear Members: Sister Amber. Ondrusek led the group attending our monthly meeting, which Sister Cheri Petr called to order at 3 p.m. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as read by Secretary Salac. Correspondence included thank you cards from the family of Sister Mildred Patak and the Czech Harvesters. Letters from SPJST Supreme Lodge were also read.

Reports of Committees -Entertainment by Sister Petr reported on dances. Hall rental report was by Brother Emil Petr. Special Committee announced money made for this project by Sister Salac. Decorating -Sister Betty Olson reported decorations are being selected for our 78th birthday on March 20th. Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported teens and youth are presently in the meeting, there will be rehearsing for the March 20 program, also Easter Party.

A letter was read from Texas Scottish - Rite Hospital staff and patients for the tray favors.

Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council report was made by Sister Bessie Petr that March 24 meeting will be in Ennis at SPJST Lodge No. 25 on Highway 34 East, hosted by SPJST Lodges 25 and 135 and WFLA No. 402 at 7:30 p.m.

April 19 -- to meet at Czech Club hosted by KJT No. 108 and KJZT No. 111; May 17 -- at Czech Club hosted by WFLA No 401; June 16 -- Council picnic at Sokol on Greenville Avenue and announced also a donation to the Texas Scottish - Rite Hospital and Czech Chair was made by the Council.

Ball Club report by Brother Jarma -it's their 35th year, sponsors contacted and remember their dance on May 21st.

House Committee -- Brother Salac reported on decorative and security front doors to be purchased, ice maker repaired, thanked Brother Olson for glass in phone booth and plumbing; also check on roof leak during rain; announced March 16, at 7 p.m., hall cleaning, floor and kitchen. Please come and help.

Sunshine Committee reported get well cards were sent to Brothers Sharp, Donald Petr, Johnnie Allegro and Sister Dottie Hagar. Sympathy cards were sent to Dorothy Reznik (loss of aunt) and Brother Jerry Urban (loss of sister).

No. 88, Houston News Lodge

Our monthly meeting was real interesting, as I have mentioned before. Sister Mary Johnson had a special evening for her 87th birthday.

We were so surprised to see Mr. Souchek among us after being in the hospital. He looks wonderful and so does his wife, Alice, his standby and with a smile on her face at all times . He announced that he will teach a Czech class from February 29 to May 23, again.

There will be a special event coming up on April 10th. Margaret Allbritton, chairman of the Blue Room, and A.J. Stayton informed me that the Blue Room Party is shaping up fast and said we shouldn't miss it. It's on Sunday, April 10, from 4 to 9 p.m.; dinner consisting of chicken fried steak, and all the trimmings, dancing by Donnie Wavra's Orchestra, and cocktails, all for $10 a person. Reservations can be made in the Lodge 88 office.

On February 12, Frances Olexa and I visited in Needville Rest Home with Grandma Hanka; we also visited with Helen Valcik and Mr. Dobesh. We were amazed how well they looked; the evidence is that they are really getting good care. Judy Sindel's sister is there, too, and we'll see her next time. I didn't know it at that time. Grandma Hanka is excited about her 93rd birthday on March 20th. The home will have a party for all the birthday March celebrities on March 25, 1988, including the administrator, Mr. Harvey Marx.

Ellen Miculka's father, Mr. Hiram Holley, fell and broke his leg. He's in the Spring Branch Hospital and has been quite ill. Include Ellen in your prayers; it's a hard task to spend day after day in the hospital. I can speak of experience.

Our 23rd anniversary in the present building at Lodge 88 was a big success.

A delicious dinner was served; we had a big crowd for bingo and then everybody loosened up for the dance

by Ray Jurecka. Just a few special words about our party booth. The Birthday Club ladies, and many members of our Society brought some delicious pies and cakes. It seems like everybody brought the very best that day. Thanks so much for the pastry.

Frank and Minnie Kratky from Weimar spent the day with us. Fr has been quite ill but is doing fine no We always look forward to Minnie's pies.

On Sunday, March 13, we'll have our District V meeting at Lodge 142.

They are preparing a good meal for us and we officers do hope all the lodges in our district will be represented. Do send at least a few members from your lodge. Lodge 88 will furnish the entertainment with Lodge 88 Choral Group and the Lodge Orchestra. The meeting will convene at 2 p.m. Many door prizes will be given away.

Rosalee and Tim Kostom attended the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Sweetheart Ball for cocktail, dinner and dance at Four Seasons Hotel on February 13, 1988. Rosalee was chosen the Sweetheart of her chapter Laureate Beta Epsilon, of which she has been a member for many years.

Harley Cox, our Entertainment Committee chairman, was quite elated over his accomplishment at the workshop at Academy Lodge 177. He received a letter from Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernie Gebala, quote: "Thanks, for a great job this past Saturday! You were a very important part of the success of the local lodge forum/workshop. I did not hear anything but good things, and the best part of it all was that it was "members helping members." I have to add a little extra; it isn't really funny, but Harley told me after the workshop they drove to his country home close to Weimar. They were going to relax with a bath and then TV. To their surprise -- "No water;" got it repaired the next day.

Sister Marcella Xleprlik, Lodge No. 133 SPJST Fraternalist

Lodge 133, San Antonio Outstanding Fraternalist Retires Marcella (Mokry) Kleprlik, the wife of Jaroslav Kleprlik, who for so many years was active with Lodge 133, San Antonio as secretary for many years, District VII sales representative and District VII organizer announced, at the last annual meeting, in December that she wishes to retire.

Sister Marcella, who is one of few people who I know of, was born in Czechoslovakia, lived in Texas for some time and then, in the middle 1930s, moved back to Czechoslovakia with her parents, was educated in Czechoslovakia where she taught school in the vicinity of Terrezin; eventually became a nurse and returnea to the United States and settled in San Antonio, Texas in 1948.

On arrival in San Antonio, she immediately went to work and received her Certificate of Nursing, was

Wednesday, March 2, 1988—VESTNIK/7 employed by the State Chest Hospital and retired in 1981. Immediately upon arrival, she and her husband both joined the SPJST and became active in Lodge 133. Sister Marcella organized the first Lodge 133 Youth Club and was instrumental in teaching the children Czech dancing and singing.

The Lodge 133 Youth Club took many honors in District VII and the San Antonio Youth Activity and, in 1954, she became the District VII Youth Counselor. The SPJST Lodge No. 133 continued to grow and the youth club was very successful in local, district and state level competition, until the late sixties, when local youth began getting married and dispersing to other locations with their spouses.

In 1960, Sister Marcella was one of the committee chairpersons for the 1960 General Convention and remained active with Lodge 133 on many activity committees and, in the middle of 1970s, Brother President Matula appointed her historian and wedding anniversary chairperson, which office she held until December 31, 1987.

Upon retirement, Sister Marcella presented the lodge with 3 volumes of historic SPJST Lodge 133 activities dating from 1951 to 1987. Lodge 133 owes Sister Marcella many thanks for her many hours of dedicated service.

Our Lodge 142 meeting was called to order by President Dennis Hermis at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 14, 1988.

We had 30 members and 7 guests present to sign our register book.

All stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Then Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers; all were present, except Financial Secretary and Treasurer Sidon Tumis and Board Member Henry Hermis.

The secretary also read the minutes from our previous meeting, which stood approved as read.

No financial secretary and treasurer's reports were given, due to the absence of Brother Sidon Tumis.

Bar and Board of Trustees' reports were read by Rosie Schilhab.

Our kitchen manager for 1988 is our Rosie Tumis who does a very nice job for all of us. Thank you, Sister Rosie.

Youth Club report was read by Jason Hermis.

Our Sick Committee reported on the following: Herman Ognoski is doing well now, Grace Kieschnick is home doing well, and Lydia Froehlich is recuperating at her daughter's home.

There was no report from the Grievance Committee.

Auditing Committee -- Mary Ann Kieschnick reported all books were in order through January.

New applicant is Michael Schleider.

We were glad to welcome distinguished visitors District V Director Jerry Prochazka, District V Youth Counselor Marie Stayton, and S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes Director Louis Hanus of District V. Other visitors recognized were Jo Buri, Edna Barta, Jo Ann Buri and Joe Gambil.

March 13th our Lodge No. 142 is hosting the District V meeting. A barbecue dinner, with all the trimmings, will be served and we welcome all to come join us on that date.

Lodge No. 142 members, don't forget to make a note and come to Lodge 142 on Saturday, March 12 for cleanup day!

Capsule attendance prize for $20 went unclaimed due to the absence of Cherease A. Roemer. The next month's prize goes to $30. Come to our meeting;you may be the lucky one.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president Brother Jerry Milan. He led us in the pledge to our flag.

All officers were present. The reports were approved as read.

Sister Pavey reported on get well and sympathy cards sent.

We had a discussion on the Metro Plex Lodges' Christmas Party we will be hosting and it will be the first Sunday on December 4, 1988.

Our meeting was short because we had a busy afternoon.

The lucky winners in the Domino Tournament were Sisters Martha Janca and Pam Franks; they won the Straight and "42."

Sister Henrietta Milan was surprised for her 50th birthday with a delicious meal. Everyone enjoyed it. May you have many more!

Brother Jerry and Sister Donna Parker were at Texas A&M to help their son, Thane, celebrate his birthday, also on the 21st.

Congratulations to Brother Bobby and Sister Carolyn Cleveland who celebrated their 25th anniversary, with a chauffeured limosine taking them to the Balcony, given by their son, B.J. Several members were on trips and arrived home safely; namely, Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan who were in Naples, Florida; Sister Kelly Eaton who coached a gymnastic team in Morristown, New Jersey and then took in the sights in New York and saw plenty of snow; Sister Lisa Hopkins visited a friend in New Jersey; Sisters Marilyn Douglas, Carolyn Cleveland and Brother B.J. Cleveland spent several days in New Orleans at the Mardi Gras; Sisters Mary Renfro, Jeanie Mason, Carrie Milan, Rosie Steinman and I attended the 80th anniversary at Sokol Ennis on the 14th and it was a most wonderful day; as Sister Donna Parker said: "The Golden Girls were on the road again."

We extend our get well wishes to Brother George Tesar and to Sister Betty (Svitak) Jordan. She spent several weeks in the hospital and is home now. She needs our prayers.

We extend our congratulations to Michael and Sister Leanne Marshall who were wed Saturday, February 20 in the home of her aunt and uncle Brother Billy and Sister Carol Sanders.

Leanne is the dau ghter of Brother Jim and Sister Wanda Mason. May they have a long and happy life together.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Sister Hattie Pruitt and family on the loss of her sister, Julia Bartosh. May she rest in peace.

A reminder of our dance -Saturday, March 12 with Moostach Joe from Nebraska.

Sister Jeanie Mason was our door prize winner. Our next meeting will be Sunday, March 13 at 3 p.m.

The February 10th meeting of Lodge 177, Academy was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Louis Driska and the pledge was recited by members.

President Driska called for any sick members in our lodge. Mary Ann Summers has returned from the hospital from back surgery; the lodge wishes her a speedy recovery and miss you, Mary Ann! Members made welcome were George and Frances Kennedy. Come back again.

Minutes from our last meeting were read by Secretary Sharon Hutka and approved' as read. All chairpersons' reports were good as usual.

Libbie Bartek sent a sympathy card to Dorothy and Rae Lisenbe and a get well card to Mary Ann Summers.

Trustees' Report — new curtains are to be made for the kitchen and bar.

Sharon Hutka was voted in as a sales representative. Jim Wiest thanked the lodge for the use of the hall for the

workshop held February 6th; there was a good turnout and President Driska commended Bill Hutka and Otis Beck on their good talks about tickets and bingo.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting. President Driska surprised the members with a casserole supper prepared by Harvey LaFlame.

President Driska announced there will be a surprise social after every meeting, so members you all have to come see what will be served.

Dear Members: The last quarterly meeting of the lodge was held December 13, 1987 at the Ramada Inn in College Station.

The meeting was preceded by a Christmas dinner at 12:30 p.m.

During the business meeting it was decided, by the membership, to donate $100 to the local Cheer Fund and $100 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Brother Ben Trcalek.

After the business meeting, the exchange of white elephant gifts took place. The children also exchanged gifts.

We'd like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Vavra, District I director, for attending.

Library Designated As Depository For Czech Genealogy SPJST

The SPJST Supreme Lodge at the January quarterly meeting designated the SPJST Library as a depository for family histories. They offer the library as a depository of family histories, whether complete or incomplete, so that the information will be available to other members or relatives. Copies may be made in the library.

The library has copies of Vestniks dating to 1933, some of which contain stories of the early Texas Czechs.

Copies of the Amerikan Kalendar date back to 1879; these contain stories of Czechs in Texas and other states.

These, of course, are in the Czech

8/VESTNIK-Wednesday, March 2, 1988 language. Some maps of early Moravia and Bohemia (Cechy) are available as well as a book for locating villages which are not on present - day maps.

During the Sequicentennial year 1986, the TOCA organization collected the documented genealogies of 32 Czechs who arrived in Texas 105 years ago; and genealogies of 47 Czechs who arrived 100 years ago.

These genealogies are not stored in the SPJST Library. Several families have donated copies of their family trees to the library.

Dear Members and Friends: Our February 9 meeting was attended by 41 members and one guest, Mary Pavey. It's always nice to have her. It was nice to have Mary Botik after a lengthy absence and Roberta Peters who has been mending from a lot of broken bones. She is able to get around by being careful.

Secretary Clara Marchioni read the minutes from our previous meetir and a thank you card from, Agn Merlick. Treasurer Evelyn Spacek gave her report.

Sunshine Lillie McMillen didn't have any report of anyone being sick which was good to hear, because there are so many people sick with the flu. If anyone is sick or in the hospital, please call Lillie McMillen because she has no way of knowing unless someone calls her.

The door prize was won by Dona Hubenak which was a beautiful iris had - painted on canvas by Julia Dueser who is quite a painter. The door prize for March will be donated

by Clara Cohen.

Hostesses for March meeting will be Clara Cohen, Estabelle Hubenak and Mary Ann Gibson.

Interesting stories and experiences were told by Evelyn Spacek and Julia Dueser. Evelyn read the history of Lodge 92, how they met in members' homes when they started out. It was all very interesting. Then she told of growing up on the Northside. Julia added to her report how they used to go to Evelyn's house when she was a very young girl and how they enjoyed it. Julia told of the fun she had growing up on the farm and how the neighbors all got - together and celebrated birthday with ice cream parties, how she and her friend served ice cream at one particular party and they didn't get any so they whipped another freezer, went into the cotton patch which was by the house to freeze the ice cream so they would have some.

Then she asked her friend to join her and the friend was Laura Posival.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Clara Cohen, Maggie Konecny, Bennie Bartek, Pauline Morbiter, Rose Neiswiodomy, Imogene Reaves, Evelyn Zacek and Al Svacek.

The next meeting will be March 8 at 10:30 a.m. so let's all be there.

After devotion, the meeting was adjourned to a delicious luncheon.

SPJST State King and Queen, Michael Morris of Lodge 47 and Melissa Victorick of Lodge 9, were invited to appear in this year's parade.

The next District II activity will be our spring District II meeting at Lodge 47, Seaton on March 27 starting at 2 p.m. The spring meeting is a business meeting and, therefore, there will not be any youth activities planned on this date, except for a short youth program and Lodge 47 Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky stated there will be a volleyball, kickball and basketball available to the youth to keep them busy if they do not choose to participate in the business meeting.

The schedule of the meeting will be as usual, with the short youth program at break time and then conclude the business meeting at the conclusion of the meeting, we will have 10 door prizes for the youth and 10 door prizes for the adults.

The District II officers decided to award prizes to the 3 lodges that have the largest percentage of members in attendance, the prizes will be awarded to the lodges, so be sure all of your local lodges' members register for prizes and also for being counted. This will give you a look at your own lodge as to how many attended and how many members each lodge has, also, at the conclusion, there will be free drinks and a free meal for all. We are asking each family to bring a salad or a sweet to help us make this meal complete.

The Seaton Brass Band under the direction of SL Honorary President Nick Morris will perform for our listening or dancing pleasure.

The officers of District II invite all members of District II and the Supreme Lodge and their spouses to attend our district meeting.

In the business part of the meeting, we will set the place of fall meeting, announce SPJST 50 - year members, sales insurance awards, committee reports and the election of district officers, etc.

This being the year of our SPJST XXV Convention, there may be questions you may want to ask changes you would prefer to be made. The convention will be in Temple which is a privilege for our area and many members who were never delegates could witness this event.

We are planning to see you at the spring District II meeting.

Very Successful District II Skating Party We had a very nice attendance of 126 skaters and a total of 155 attending. We had 7 youth clubs out of 8 in attendance. We were very happy to have Lodge 18, Elgin with us and, especially, happy to have Lodge 187, Round Rock to be with us. Lodge 187, Round Rock recently re - organized their youth club with Sharon Holman as their new youth leader and we were happy to see all of the youth from Round Rock.

We were happy to have all the clubs, leaders and assistants present including Lodge 24, Cyclone; Lodge 47, Seaton; Lodge 177, Academy; Lodge 29, Taylor; we were also happy to have

Lodge 20, Granger, with new Youth Leader Emily Teague. Thank you to all youth and parents for attending; we had a few minor accidents this time but everyone is -doing just fine.

We had 27 youth who won some type of a door prize so we had many happy youth. They are: Five dollar winners -- Dana Lannen (Lodge 18), Christopher Laws (20), Tracey Chervenka (24), Steven Gola (187) and Billy Holt, guest.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club Activities Dear Members and Friends: The months of January and February have been very busy for all of our members.

Both of our Beseda groups, along with our other youth club members, were honored to be able to participate at the 10 - year celebration of the Cultural Activity Center in Temple.

All dancers and singers reported having a great time performing on such a beautiful lighted stage. Thank

you to the anonymous person who paid our admission to the remaining features. We enjoyed the entire evening.

At our February 7 meeting, our youth members made and decorated Valentines for the residents of the Colonial Nursing Home in Cameron.

These cards were delivered by our members on Feburary 13th. We sang our favorite camp songs and Group II Beseda dancers performed. It was so touching to see the excitement of all the folks. We ended our afternoon with a visit to the park for refreshments.

Thank you to all my members and to my assistant, Judy, for the beautiful flower arrangement you gave to me for Valentine's. What a special Valentine for me! You are all great and very special.

Our chili supper, auction and sale was, once again, very successful.

Those of you who were unable to attend missed an evening of good food, fun and fellowship. We had a cake walk, spinning wheel, bean bag toss and also ring toss.

To all of you who came out to support our youth, we take our hats off to you. We thank each of you for your presence. Thank you for all your donations.

Youth members, you did great in keeping your duties on top. Parents thank you for your hard work. To Adeline and Willie E. Kohutek and Ann and Dan Balusek, we appreciate your cooking the, delicious chili, helping in the kitchen and the clean up.

Our auction was very successful; Johnny Dokupil, Jr. of D&B Auctioneers did a fantastic job.

Johnny made the evening very enjoyable, keeping the audience laughing and bidding. We appreicate your time, Johnny. The winners were: 1st -- ($100) Carl Macek of our neighboring Lodge No. 24, Cyclone; 2nd -- (AM/FM cassette player) Tracy Klusacek, a member of our youth club; 3rd -- (SPJST dominoes donated by District II Director Willie E. and Adeline Kohutek) won by Carolyn Hoelscher; Congratulations to all the winners!

We all enjoyed the District II Skating Party last Sunday. To those of you who fell, we hope you are all okay.

Letters From The Youth Taiton SPJST Youth Meet Taiton SPJST Lodge 30 Youth Club met Sunday afternoon in the Taiton Community Center with 15 members present.

The group worked on crafts before the meeting was called to order by Marcy Dorotik. Michael Kaspar led the pledge and Stephanie Roye led the prayer.

The minutes were read by Jennifer Dluhos and the treasurer's report was read by Mrs. Jerome Dorotik. Denice Kaspar read the dues' report.

Miss Mary Mrnustik donated a check to the youth club. District Youth Counselor Anita Roye spoke about a camp T - shirt contest and encouraged entries.

The club is sponsoring a Stanley Products drive during the month of February.

Landis Dornak, who has a February birthday, was wished a happy birthday.

Poems were read by Marcy Dorotik, Lenice Kaspar, Craig Dornak, Craig Dorotik, Michael Kaspar, Valerie Roye, Jeanine Dorotik and Stephanie Roye.

Dear Readers, Our last monthly meeting was held on February 14, 1988. We discussed the District II Skating Party which was held on Sunday, February 21st. Lodge 24 was represented by many talented skaters. Congratulations to all of our door prize winners.

On Monday, January 18, our youth club, went bowling to Action World in Temple. Everyone had a really great time. We bowled and played games.

Afterwards we went to eat pizza at Mazzio's. The pizza was delicious and enjoyed by all who went.

Some upcoming events include the District II spring meeting on March 27 at Seaton Star Hall Lodge No. 47.

Other events include District II camp at Val Verde on July 21 - 27, and YAD on July 10 at Lodge 29, Taylor. Lodge 24 youth members: start getting your talent and crafts ready for this "big day."

We want to wish our Youth Leader Rose Harvell, who was in the hospital recently, a very speedy recovery. We are thinking of you and hope you will be feeling well real soon.

Our meeting was held February 14 at 2 p.m.. We had 15 members, 3 adults, 3 social members and 3 visitors.

Of course, being Valentine's Day, everyone brought decorated cookies and boxes, they were all pretty and the cookies were delicious. We had lots of winners. We also had candy boxes for door prizes. The winners were Sissy Bueno, Nathan Tierce, Charlene Stead, Jason Piper and Chris Pavelka.

Under new business we voted to have a kite - flying contest at our next meeting which will be March 13th.

Jamie Williams brought the birthday cake and Tracy Breitkreutz won our door prize. The meeting was then adjourned.

Born January 21, 1889 at Ammannsville, she was the daughter of Roman and Josephine (Barta) Bartosh. She was married to Frank Stos on November 8, 1909. He died September 18, 1971.

Mrs. Stos was a member of St. John Church and Christian Mothers, and SPJST Lodge No. 8 in Weimar.

Surviving are two daughters, Miss Agnes Stos of Ammannsville and Mrs. Millie Maresh of Houston; three sons, Henry Stos of Ammannsville, Richard and Edward Stos of San Antonio; 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Albina Dobecka of Houston.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, was a daughter, Mrs. Martha Hrachovy of Hostyn.

Serving as pallbearers were grandsons DeWayne, Frankie and Michael Maresh of Houston, Frank J. Janda and Charles Chamrad of Hostyn, Nicholas Heger of Ammannsville, Leonard Wick of Weimar, and James Tuppa of San Antonio.

Lodge 40 held a Pizza Party and took a tour of Mr. Gatti's on Saturday, February 20th. All members met at 11 a.m. for a tour and then enjoyed pizza and spaghetti. Everyone had a good time. Thank you to our youth leader for a nice party.

We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge Texaska Orlice No. 13, Dime Box, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother JOSEPH MATEJCEK, 79, of Giddings, who died January 19, 1988 at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston after a lengthy illness. Mr. Matejcek was born on May 24, 1908 in Dime Box, Texas and was the son of the late William and Amalie Fetter Matejcek.

Funeral services for Mr. Matejcek were held Thursday, January 21, at 2 p.m. at Brethren Church in Dime Box, Texas, with burial at Hranice Cemetery in Dime Box. Officiating at the services were Rev. Daniel Marek and Rev. H.E. Beseda.

He is survived by his wife, Antonia Matejcek of Giddings; three daughters, Alice Marie Lynch of Houston, Julia Ann Spitzenberger of Lexington and Betty Joe Pampell of Richmond; three sons, Joe Edward of Gonzales, Robert Dale and William John of Giddings; 14 grandchildren; 5 great - grandchildren; one sister, Annie Hannes of Leroy, Texas; also a host of friends and relatives.

Mr. Matejcek joined the SPJST Lodge No. 105 at Guy, Texas on January 31, 1933; at that time, his father - in - law, Mr. John Plasek, was secretary of Lodge 105. Later Mr. Matejcek was secretary of the same lodge for a number of years.

Brother Matejcek received his SPJST 50 - year membership pin in 1974.

Brother Matejcek worked in his garden and loved roses in his later years. For several years, he was a businesSman in Giddings. He was a respected loveable man and always attended SPJST meetings.

Resolution Committee Mary J. Kubena Albina Milburn Emma Ovcarik —SPJST-

ALBERT JOHN BLAHA, SR., of Houston and a former resident of Dime Box, who died Tuesday, February 2, 1988.

Brother Blaha's remains were taken from the Waltrip Funeral Home, 1415 Campbell Road, Houston, Texas to Phillips - Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell on February 5 and funeral services were then held at 11 a.m.

February 6 in Dime Box Brethren Church, with Rev. Dan Marek and Rev. H.E. Beseda officiating.

Interment was in Hranice Cemetery under the direction of Phillips Luckey Funeral Home.

Brother Blaha attended Hranice School, in 1933 he graduated from Caldwell High School and later from University of Texas in 1938 with a BS degree in Architectural Engineering.

He worked in El Paso first, then in 1940, was sent to Honolulu. He spent 6 years in Hawaii. In 1946, he went to Guam and met his wife, Edna Ethel Linton. They came back to the states to Florida to be married in 1948. They returned to Guam and two of their three children were born there.

He became affiliated with Brown and Root Company and in 1952 he went to the Republic of Haiti and worked there for years; then he was assigned to Venezuela for 3 years; in 1958, he was sent to Thailand for 51/2 years; his family was with him.

He and the family returned to the U.S. in 1964 on a round - the - world trip that took them through various countries including Czechoslovakia where he traced his family birthplace.

He then worked out of the Houston office of Brown and Root.

We of the Dime Box Brethren Church have a wonderful and useful gift from Brother Albert; in 1954, he gave the bell for the church,following the footsteps of Grandpa Blaha who gave the bell before the church burned and the bell broke in half.

Brother Albert was a paidup member of SPJST Lodge No. 13 Dime Box since 1964 and a lifelong member of the Brethren Church.

In 1975, our member, Brother Albert Blaha wrote - the Souvenir Program Booklet and Dedication for our new SPJST Lodge Home Building held on October 26, 1975.

He was born October 31, 1909 to Louis and Sophie (Durking) Heidemann. Brother Heidemann married the former Miss Esther Kaase on August 2, 1933 at the Welcome Salem Church of Welcome, Texas.

Survivors include two sons, Otto Heidemann Jr. and Louis Heidemann of Brenham; daughters, Janet Mills of Choctou, Oklahoma, Glendeen Roemer of Houston and Ruby 13 Brenham; of Kubeczka grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren . He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.

Pallbearers were Bobby Meyer, Doyle and Bruce Roemer, Darrell and Douglas Herms, Mark and Todd Heidemann and Greg Kubeczka.

Expression Of Sympathy The officers and members of SPJST Lodge No. 25, Ennis, Texas send their deepest sympathy to the family of JOE J. LANDSFELD, who passed away Tuesday morning at the VA Hospital in Dallas after a long illness.

He was born September 14, 1918, in Ennis to Joe and Mary Jakubik Landsfeld. He was reared in Ennis and attended Ennis High School. January 21, 1941, he was married to Miss Agnes Holy of Ennis. After their marriage they lived in Ennis. During World War II he entered the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater. He was a butcher by trade and worked in the profession for 32 years for Messers, Bobak and Zazvorka, Kucera's and Liksa's Ennis Meat Market. He was also employed by the Cody Company for several years. He retired in 1980. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the KJT No. 35 and the SPJST Lodge No. 25.

Mass of Christian Burial for Joe J. Landsfeld, 69, was celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. John's Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Pichard as celebrant. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Wednesday in the Keever Chapel with Rev. Ernie 'Torres. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary with the following serving as pallbearers: Joe David Janousek, Steven Landsfeld, Danny Salik, David Pleiner, Tony Harrison and Clint Nash.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Landsfeld of Ennis; two sons, Joe E. Landsfeld of Ennis and Michael J. Alfred Mikulec was born in Marak to Frank and Emilie Balusek Mikulec, the ninth child in a family of ten children. He was a veteran of World War II and served with the Occupation Forces in Japan. He was honorably discharged September 26, 1947 at Fort Lawton, Oklahoma.

He is survived by five brothers, August Mikulec of Corpus Christi, Alphonse Mikulec and I.J. Mikulec, both of Cameron, Theodore Mikulec of Marak and Norbert Mikulec of Dallas; and two sisters, Minnie Krenek of Taylor and Claudia Hill of Abilene.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
