Author Unknown *** Saturday, February 6th the Local Lodge Workshop was held at Lodge No. 177, Academy and, from all comments and indications, proved to be very well accepted and informative to all in attendance. In fact, it seemed to be more beneficial than the previous one, mainly because it was a case Of actual local lodge experiences being shared by all lodge representatives present. There were about 150 present and it appeared that the presenters and audience were on a very fraternal one on - one friendly basis in exchanging ideas about local lodge matters which nearly all lodge officers and members encounter in everyday lodge work and life. It appeared that all left the workshop with somewhat renewed enthusiasm and some felt they had certainly benefitted by attending.

There were expressions made desiring more of such fraternal get - togethers or seminars in the future. Your editor enjoyed attending and meeting with so many friends and regrets that some were prevented from attending due to the weather conditions.

Lodge No. 177 proved to be gracious hosts and their "working crew" had the lodge hall in shape for that Saturday evening within thirty minutes after the visiting membership had adjourned. When your writer left, all was "spic and span" and cleaned!

SL Vice President Bernard Gebala was the project coordinator of the workshop and did a good, successful job.

We thank SFM Gene McBride for taking and getting the pictures processed so that we could publish them as soon as possible. *** Speaking of your relatives, do you know about your parents' first date?

Your grandfather's exploits during World War I? Your mother's proudest moment? These days, with family members often living far apart, it's tough to build and pass on a sense of the body of family tradition, values, beliefs and experience that makes up each person's heritage. When you

go home to visit relatives, consider appointing yourself family historian -- it may be your last opportunity to collect your dear grandfather's memories of the battle of Verdun. To create an archive of family lore, a resource that your own children will certainly treasure, all you really need is a tape recorder, a list of provocative questions, and time.

Your most important tools will be questions and an honest interest in the responses. Questions help create an autobiography by evoking memories of childhood and adolescence, courtship and marriage, the births and growth of children, and work and aging. Questions about historical events will place a person in the context of his or her times: What was your life like during the world wars?

The Depression? President Kennedy's term of office? Finally, by probing for such intangibles as religious and political attitudes, artistic preferences, beliefs about child rearing, you'll get insight into family philosophy and values. To put your subject at ease, ask factual questions at first. Resist the temptation to add your own comments -- you'll inevitably distract your subject from a train of thought.

Family - folklore experts stress the importance of explaining - what you plan to do with the tapes and of respecting confidences by erasing material when necessary.

Don't spend a lot on equipment.

You can get a decent audiocassette recorder. Get good, brand - name tapes (90 - minute) -- cheap tapes jam, record poorly and deteriorate. Put a few interview sessions on videotape to record appearance and mannerisms.

You can rent a camcorder from your local video store at daily rates usually for a reasonable price. Rent a tripod, too. It's tough - and distracting to everyone -- to conduct a relaxed interview with a camera on your shoulder. Test all equipment before each interview begins, and as you fill each tape, label it with the date your subject's name and topics discussed.

Probably you may want to flesh out your family archive with photos from your grandparents' shoe box. Some tips for safe storage: Keep photos in a controlled environment -- never in attics or basements, where temperature and humidity fluctuate. Wrap each photo in acid - free paper or special plastics such as Mylar and Melinex.

Steer clear of typical commercially sold photo albums, since the adhesives and plastics that such albums contain can cause photos to deteriorate.

Instead, use a binder with acid - free paper pages, and attach the photos with paper corners. Cover each page with a sheet of Mylar. Don't write on the backs of photos; ink can bleed through the paper. Ultraviolet and fluorescent light cause fading, so keep your photos away from light sources -in acid - free folders or boxes, and in metal rather than wooden drawers, since many wood - curing products and varnishes give off damaging fumes. If you frame a photo, mat it and use light - filtering Plexiglas. ***

Carefully maneuvering your car down an ice - slickened street, you see a child run into the road. Reflexively, you jam on the brakes and yank the wheel over -- exactly the wrong thing to do. The car goes into an uncontrolled spin. Winter driving demands special skills -- and you can hone yours by taking one of many courses offered around the country. ***

Workshop (Continued from page one) The local lodge forum/workshop held at Academy Lodge 177 on Saturday, February 6, 1988, was well attended. Twenty - six lodges had one hundred forty - seven representatives present to share ideas.

The exchange of ideas seemed to work well and the results will be in the progress the lodges make in incorporating the topics discussed.

All the presenters and their topics were well received. Special thanks go to these volunteers for making the program a success.

Many of those in attendance expressed a desire for more seminars with expanded topics.

MINUTES - The minutes of the October 6, 21 - 22, 1987 Supreme Lodge meeting were considered and approved as presented.

Committee Meetings - The Missions and Goals Committee reviewed that portion of their report listing

suggestions for the Supreme Lodge Sub - Committees. Recess was taken until 3:30 p.m. to allow the Products Committee, Fraternal Activities Committee, Investment Planning Committee and Management Committee time to meet and prepare recommendations for business at hand.

Reports The Supreme Lodge Officers' reports were acknowledged on motion duly adopted. The reports will be placed of record.

OLD BUSINESS LAM - Suggestion was made to have an appropriate display case constructed for the puppet display and authorization was granted to proceed.

Selection of Fraternalist of the Year It was decided that each Supreme Lodge member should select the names of finalists from applications submitted with final selection to be made by the entire Supreme Lodge.

Youth Department - SYD Claudette Reese was invited into the meeting. She presented her report and reviewed proposed changes.

Appearance of Jo Thompson of Lodge No. 191 "Miss Texas" at the convention youth program was authorized. She currently holds the title of "Miss Texas."

It was decided to invite the past SPJST Kings and Queens to attend the 1988 State Royalty competition for recognition.

4/VESTNiK—Wednesday, February 17, 1988 The recommendations for changes in the Youth Rule Book were approved.

Editor Rudy Sefcik arrived at 3:35 p.m. and visited the meeting.

Sales Representative Honor Roll - It was agreed that the State Top Producer would be paid $500.

Recess was taken at 5:35 p.m. until January 12 at 9 a.m.

NEW BUSINESS Genealogy Research Center - After much consideration authorization was granted to make the library available as a place for research and storage of genealogical information.

Convention Plans and Activities - The officers' recommendations were reviewed and approved.

A motion was adopted to consider setting up a data bank if a substantial amount of information is received.

REO No. 163 [SPJST Lodge No. 178, Longview] - Report was made on the contract being negotiated with SPJST Lodge No. 178. After full review and discussion, the lease/purchase arrangement was ratified.

SPJST Volleyball Tournament - A proposed volleyball tournament was considered and approved.

DIRECT BILL - Report was made that 72 lodges with an aggregate certificate count of 39,415 are now on direct bill.

Premium Refund To Lodges/Members - A proposal to increase the refund to lodges from 8 percent to 8.75 percent was approved.

The proposal to leave the premium refund to members unchanged was also approved.

The premium refund scale adopted effective January 1, 1988 is to remain the same as in 1987. The Universal Life certificates, Lone Pay Life, and annuities are excluded.

Recess for lunch was taken from 11:40 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Employees' Salaries - Employee salary adjustments proposed by the Management Committee were presented for consideration and approved.

LODGE REFUND - There was discussion about the means by which funds can be allocated to lodges for fraternal activities. It was agreed to get our actuary to work up proposals for consideration prior to the convention.

It was decided to hold a special Supreme Lodge meeting to consider convention proposals on February 5, 1988 at 1 p.m.

Bankruptcies/Tax Suits/Foreclosures Report was made on several tax suits, foreclosures and several bankruptcies involving members having loans from the SPJST. Liability Insurante - Report was made on efforts by an NFCA group to develop a means to provide member fraternal companies with liability insurance. It was speculated that the coverage might begin with Directors and Officers liability and later general and liquor liability which might be available to local lodges. Information had been sent to the committee affirming that the SPJST supports the effort it is found to be economical and feasible.

Fraternalist of the Year - The selection of Fraternalist of the Year was conducted by secret ballot. The selection was Frances Olexa of Lodge No. 88 in Houston.

Loan Application Request - Another organization had contacted a director concerning a lodge building loan and was referred to the secretary treasurer. The secretary - treasurer, in turn, informed the group that our by laws explicitly limited the amount of such loans and also informed them of other limitations that would apply.

District Fall Meeting Activities - A quilting contest was considered as a fall district meeting activity. The quilting contest was approved as a fall district meeting activity. Rules are to be considered in the April Supreme Lodge meeting. Another activity suggested was a horseshoe tournament and it was approved.

The previously approved action setting a pastry contest in spring district meetings was reconsidered. It was decided to schedule the pastry contest for the fall district meetings.

It was decided to add a plaque as an award for the deer contest.

Prizes for the Domino and Tarok Tournaments were approved as recommended.

Merit Scholarship - The proposal to award merit point scholarships had been referred to the Fraternal Committee the previous SL meeting.

Recommendation was made that the youth merit point winner in each district be awarded a $500 scholarship.

The recommendation was approved as listed in the SYD's report. The winner of this scholarship cannot compete in the regular SPJST Scholarship Program and is limited to one State Scholarship and one District Scholarship. The scholarship must be used within 2 years after graduation.

Fraternal Activities - The following recommendations of the Missions and Goals Committee were approved for development: 1. Develop Czech language tapes for beginners, using good diction, pleasant voice and simple phrases. It was agreed to review the sufficiency of present material before proceeding.

2. Support teaching of the Czech language at local lodges, schools and universities.

3. Prepare plan to promote teaching of Czech dances.

Modified Life - Report was made on developing a new plan of insurance in which the conversion date would be an older age (such as age 25) instead of the present term to age 16. The idea was to be referred to the Insurance Committee.

Minutes of Officers' Meetings -The minutes of officers' meetings were approved on motion duly passed.

Real Estate Owned - There was discussion on the properties foreclosed and decisions were made on disposing of the real estate properties. A full report was given and the SL officers were given full authority to handle disposition of the properties after consulting with the director in whose district the property is situated.

Directors so desiring were encouraged to inspect any of the foreclosed properties.

Conflict of Interest - The Society procedure for reporting conflict of interest, if any, was taken up. Each Supreme Lodge member was given an opportunity to report conflict of interest, if any, and there was no conflict of interest reported by any Supreme Lodge member.

Loan Applications/Annuity Universal Life Rate - There was a general discussion about mortgage loan rates, annuity rate and the Universal Life rate. There was a discussion concerning interest rate risk and its relationship to investment policy.

After due consideration, the following motion was adopted: That the mortgage loan interest rates be lowered /4 percent. The new rates are as follows:

The assessment and cost of the audit was estimated at about $23,000.

Budget - There was a general discussion about the pros and cons of having the Management Committee prepare a budget for future years.

Buses and Tours - Recommendation was heard that buses be used for transportation to the convention banquet and for several convention tours that were being planned.

Directors - Report was made on favorable growth of the Society. The books were all found to be in good order. Several expenditure items were reviewed, explanations were requested and responses were given.

Goals and Objectives - Consideration was given to the remainder of the Report of the Committee on Missions and Goals. There was lengthy discussion of the proposals and those items needing convention action were informally assigned to be forwarded to the By - Law Committee.

Because of other priorities, further action on the Missions and Goals report was postponed until the July Supreme Lodge meeting.

Czech Educational Foundation - A motion was adopted to pay and present the $10,000 pledged to the Czech Chair project.

Rest or Retirement Home - The XXIV Convention recommended and Owner Residence/Farm Property: authorized the Rest Home Directors 91/4 percent with 1 to 10-year term 10 percent with 11 to 15 - year term and the Supreme Lodge to make a 101/4 percent with 16 to 20-year term feasibility study to determine if there is a need for a rest or retirement home.

The results of this study are to be Commercial/Owner Operated reported at the next convention.

Business Property: It was decided to gather information 11 percent with 1 to 10 - year term 111/4 percent with 11 to 15-year term and prepare a report.

The Supreme Lodge officers were given authority to increase or decrease the rates by up to 1 percent.

The annuity rate was set at 8 percent to April 30, 1988.

The Universal Life rate was set 9 percent to April 30, 1988.

The next regular Supreme Lodge meeting was set to begin at 9 a.m.

April 12, 1988.

The meeting adjourned at 5:57 p.m.

Mortgage Loan Requirements - There was a discussion about the decline in real estate values. Consideration was given to requirements recommended to be added to our loan procedure. It was decided to approve the new requirements listed in the secretary treasurer's report.

Suggestion was heard that a change be recommended to the By - Law Committee to require 2 appraisers on loans up to $60,000.

Investments - The investments for the quarter as listed in the secretary treasurer's report were ratified on motion.

Gain in Assets - Review of the financial statement for 1987 reflected a healthy 14.42 percent increase in assets over the previous year. Assets increased $6,822,231.88 during 1987.

Claims Procedure - The procedure in reporting and processing death claims of direct bill and group bill lodges was reviewed as a matter of information. It was stressed that one of our prime

V Spring Meeting

Dear Members: We district officers met with the officers and chairmen of Lodge No. 142 and the directors of Lodge No. 88 Choral Club and Czech Concert Orchestra at Wyatts Cafeteria. It was a very nice meeting, and I thank all who came. Plans were made for our district meeting which is to be held at Lodge No. 142, 5508 Nolda Street on Sunday, March 13th.

A beef brisket dinner with all the trimmings will be served from 11 a.m. on. There will be entertainment during the noon hour by Lodge No. 88 Choral Club and the Czech Concert Orchestra. The meeting will start at 2 p.m.

Lodge No. 24, Cyclone The regular monthly meeting of the SPJST Lodge No. 24 (Flag Hall) was held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 2nd. President LaVerne Cabla called our meeting to order.

After the Pledge of Allegiance, we had a moment of silence in memory of our deceased lodge brother, Werner Fuchs, of Westphalia. To Mr. Fuchs's family, we extend our sympathy.

On the sick list is Helen Spanhel. To you, Helen, we wish a speedy recovery.

New members who were accepted into Lodge 24 were Arnold Pechal and Sammy Wilde. Transfers from Lodge 47 are Albert and Clara Krupka.

Welcome to all of you into our lodge.

We hope to see you soon at our meetings.

The Board of Trustees had their first meeting of the year on January 11, 1988. Carol Chervenka was named board chairman. There are some repairs to our hall that need to be taken care of: Push bars installed on two outside doors, leaking roof repaired, door to walk - in cooler repaired, ice machine replaced or

repaired. The board will see about getting all these items taken care of.

Thanks to Jerry Zavodny for the repair work that he did around the lodge this past month. We really appreciate your effort, Jerry.

Rose Harvell gave us a report on the bowling social that the teens had January 18th. Everyone had a real good time. The juniors will have their social either February 14 or 21st.

Details to follow. Also, all youth club members need to remember the District II Skating Party that will be held February 21 at 5 p.m. at Skate Haven in Temple. If you have any questions, contact Rose Harvell or Pauline Marek.

We have put in our bid to have the Straight Domino Tournament March 19 at Flag Hall. The site of the tournament has not yet been decided, however, we are hoping the tournament can be held at our lodge.

Playoffs for the tournament will be held Friday, February 12 at 7 p.m.

Partners in the playoffs are Johnny Svoboda and Mike Carpenter, Ray Coots and Edwin Malcik, Billy Smetanka and Johnny Chervenka, and Marvin Wilde and Charley Bartek.

Ryan Sebek and Kenneth Marek are partners for the "42" Tournament. To all these domino players we wish many good "hands."

February 19, the SPJST Lodge No. 47 (Star Hall) Youth Club will have their annual chili supper and fun night starting at 6 p.m. Let's all support our sister lodge.

Dear Members of Lodge 39: Under bad weather conditions we met for our February meeting today.

Our President Alnor Kuder opened the meeting at 2:05 p.m. Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. All officers were present except the youth leader.

Minutes were read and approved.

Alnor explained that we accepted the local lodge Rules & Regulations in our January meeting. She also read a form letter from our tax appraiser. We decided that the Board of Trustees would estimate the value of all our property. A letter was also presented from our Home Office as to our 1987 activities.

Treasurer gave the financial report; all bills had been paid.

Aline Kuder presented two air control covers for our air conditioners. Lillie Matejka made a motion that we purchase these covers, seconded by Tony Hajek, and carried.

We discussed our local lodge dues and Aline Kuder made a motion that we charge all members after the age of 12. All youth who are paying social local dues to an existing youth club are exempt. This only is as long as they are an active member of the youth club; seconded by Lillie Matejka, and carried.

The president is to call a special meeting of the Board of Trustees to review the salaries and rental charges.

In addition to the four officers, we elected Rena Macik as a trustee and chairperson of Planning Committee.

Elected was Michael Faust as a trustee and chairperson of Entertainment Committee. We then elected Katherine Valenta to the Board of Trustees. The duties are outlined in our newly accepted Rules & Regulations.

We discussed charitable projects, repairs, painting and roof damages.

No action was taken on any of these items.

Saturday, February 6 Alnor Kuder, Thressa Wolf and I attended a local lodge forum/workshop at Lodge 177, Academy. This was a very educational workshop and we learned a great deal about the operation of the most successful lodges. We received many new ideas from the presenters who volunteered to share their successes with us. Upon arrival at Lodge 177, we were invited to coffee and kolaches, that really hit the spot. The noon meal was also very delicious; we really enjoyed the time we spent there, and we discussed the different topics on our way home. Thanks to the Supreme Lodge and Lodge 177, Academy for making this event possible.

It was a pleasure to meet our District I Director Andy Vavra, again. He was so very kind and helpful recently during the time of the construction of our newly - adopted local Rules & Regulations of our lodge. Our lodge made several attempts, in the past, to adopt a set of local rules and regulations and always failed. This

I have very high regard for our District I director and I hope he remains our director for a long time in the future. On January 25, 1988 District V officers and their spouses were invited to Wyatt Cafeteria for dinner and meeting. It was well attended. Lodge 142 invited the lodges in District V to spend March 13, 1988 with them. They are preparing a meal for us and also invited our Choral Group and Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra to entertain us from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.

The meeting will convene at 2 p.m.

President Tillie Helmcamp will write a letter in detail to the Vestnik.

On January 26, Rosalee and Tim Kostom invited the Choral Group to their lovely home for a meeting and party. A party it was! Everyone had a good time, but the biggest surprise was when Mickey Rice came in with a birthday cake for Tim's 84th birthday.

Tim wasn't quite able to blow out the candles with one "Blow," it took 4, plus a little help from others. Then we sang "Happy Birthday" and wished him many more.

The Choral Group chose their officers for 1988; they are President Gene Barcak, Secretary Evelyn Walla, Treasurer Rosalee Kostom, Director Tim Kostom, Assistant Director Helen Hegwood, Accompanist Naomi Spencer and Telephone Committee is Evelyn Walla.

The Hlahol Dramatic Club met on February 1 for a meeting and refreshments. President Bill Malina opened the meeting with Rosalee Kostom reading the minutes of the previous meeting. Ted LaPesh, the Czech director, announced they have a Czech Play casted and will present the play "Marenku si neber" on April 17, at Lodge 88. Mark your calendar because the play is on its way.

Yes, it has happened at Lodge No. 88 in a very BIG way.

But only through the thoughtfulness and generousity of lodge members, their friends and, in many instances, it has been office co - workers of lodge members.

It only takes a very little effort on the part of each to accomplish so much.

Since August 1986 when this effort was initiated the original goal was to reach 500 and not one of us knew when this would occur -- yet it happened.

It only shows what a bit of perserverance can actually do when each puts his or her shoulder to the wheel and pulls together. That's what is called TEAMWORK. It's been known by all that when members of Lodge No. 88 decide that there is something big to be done that there is only one thing to do. "Get to

work fast and not let any gross grow under foot."

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Another season of playing softball is about here. This marks season Number 35 for Lodge 84 Men's Fast Pitch Softball; guess it's a record of sorts. We are proud to be able to field a team this season. It looked sort of doubtful for a while. Finally, we are in a bind and can use any help anyone would like to contribute on their own, just let us know. We will be starting practices in a few weeks and, if you would like to try out for the team, fast pitch, please call Ben Jarma -- 348 1514 or Paul Bartos -- 289 - 0466 for information.

Uniformwise, we are hurting this season with funds. Our annual benefit team dance won't be until Saturday, May 21 at our lodge hall.

My personal goal was to make it 35 years and after that, it's history and hopefully, someone will still carry on the tradition of which we are sort of proud at Lodge 84. Please help us on our annual softball dance this year in May and, hopefully, our membership of the SPJST lodges in our vicinity and friends (Dallas - Fort Worth - Ennis, etc.) will all respond and give us your support. Most of our team's expenses have to be raised and earned by the team itself. We also ask for help and support of former ballplayers who played on our team; there are a lot of you for 34 years.

We're looking forward to another successful season, God willing.

Library Designated As Depository For Czech Genealogy SPJST

The SPJST Supreme Lodge at the January quarterly meeting, designated the SPJST Library as a depository for family histories. They offer the library as a depository of family histories, whether complete or incomplete so that the information will be available to other members or relatives. Copies may be made in the library.

The library has copies of Vestniks dating to 1933; some of which contain stories of the early Texas Czechs.

Copies of the Amerikan Kalendar date back to 1879; these contain stories of Czechs in Texas and other states.

These, of course, are in the Czech language. Some maps of early Moravia and Bohemia (Cechy) are available as well as a book for locating villages which are not on present - day maps.

During the Sesquicentennial year 1986, the TOCA organization collected the documented genealogies of 32 Czechs who arrived in Texas 105 years ago; and genealogies of 47 Czechs who arrived 100 years ago.

These genealogies are now stored in the SPJST Library. Several families have donated copies of their family trees to the library.

Proceedings Of Czech Music Symposium Published

About one year ago, some fifteen hundred people converged on Bryan, Texas to attend a program entitled Czech Music in Texas: A Sesquicentennial Symposium. The three - day program, held November 14 - 16, was part of the state's Sesquicentennial Celebration and included numerous musical performances which illustrated the rich heritage of Czech music in Texas.

Lectures and discussions concerning Czech music in Texas were also part of the program, and several of these have now been edited and published in a proceedings volume that is being made available to the general public.

Contents include papers by Josef SkvoreckY, Zdena Salivarova, Zdenek Salzmann, Michael Beckerman, John J. Karas, John K. Novak, James P. Leary, Calvin C. Chervenka, and Erich SeRik, as well as the transcript of a panel discussion on polka music moderated by Bernard M. Gebala and summary of interview concerning Texas Czech bands by James W. Mendl.

The spiral - bound book is being offered for sale for the cost of printing plus a five - dollar donation to the Czech Educational Foundation's drive to establish an endowed chair of Czech at a major Texas university. Letters From The Youth Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club The youth club of Lodge 47 met Sunday, February 7, 1988. President Michael Morris opened the meeting.

Lori Gregor read the minutes of the last meeting and Melanie Koslovsky gave the treasurer's report.

Birthdays for this month are Mark Gregor, Angela Pechal and David Koslovsky. Visitors were Justin Cox, Sean and Michelle Samson. We have a new member, he is Mark Gregor. We now have 43 youth club members.

Door prizes were won by Michael Morris and Erin Skrabanek.

We made Valentine gifts to bring to the nursing home on February 13 and we will dance the Beseda for the residents.

We have adopted part of Highway 53 as a clean up highway project.

On February 19 we will have our youth club chili supper and auction.

We will serve chili starting at 6 p.m., followed by games and an auction. We are also selling tickets for some nice prizes. First prize is $100, second prize is an AM/FM Cassette Player and third prize is a set of SPJST Dominoes. You all should come out and enjoy some good chili and fun.

Lodge No. 40 held its meeting on February 4, 1988. Darren Dybala called the meeting to order.

We will tour and have a Pizza Party at Mr. Gattis on February 20, at 12 noon.

Door prize winners were Kim Kacel, Derrick Morris, Jennifer Rubesh and Lisa Morris.

We worked on crafts. Pat Dybala served refreshments.

The SPJST Lodge No. 40 Youth Club had a meeting on February 4 at the Commercial Bank Gold Room at 7 p.m.

We also had a Valentine Party. We made Valentine boxes or bags or wrote poems for February; whoever took part in it, all got a cash prize.

We will have a Pizza Party on February 20 at 12 noon, at Mr. Gattis.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Martha Bartos who had a birthday in February.

District VI Youth Counselor Anita Roye talked to us on upcoming events.

Dear Readers, The January Lodge No. 160 Youth Club met at the home of Sandra Jansa.

There were 10 members, 3 guests and 4 adults present.

President Robyn Jansa called the meeting to order. Jeremy Block led the pledge. The minutes were read by Christie Dierschke.

Our Youth Leader Sandra Jansa gave her report on YAD, camp and leaders' meeting.

We decided to have a Valentine Bowling and Pizza Party with the Rowena Youth Club.

After the meeting, we made leather change purses and enjoyed refreshments.

We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 35, Elk, on behalf of our officers and entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister MRS. WILLIE [VLASTA] PAVELKA, who passed away Friday, January 29, 1988 at a Mart nursing home at the age of 87. Formerly of 701 N. Davis in West, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie, on April 22, 1985.

Services were held Saturday, January 30 at 2 p.m. at West Brethren Church in West, with the Rev. Lawrence Junek officiating. Burial was at SPJST Pavelka Cemetery near Elk, Texas.

Mrs. Pavelka was born April 6, 1900, in Wesley, Texas. She was married to Willie Pavelka on December 2, 1919 in Waco.

She was a housewife and helped with the farming. She was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 35 in Elk and West Brethren Church.

Survivors include four sons, Charlie Pavelka of Mart, Edwin Pavelka of Waco, Eldon Pavelka of West and Robert Pavelka of Abbott; one daughter, Willie Mae Veselka of West;

who passed away December 18, 1987 at a Ft. Worth nursing home after a long illness, at the age of 82.

Mrs. Butler was born in De Leon and moved to Ft. Worth in 1930. She had been a beautician in Ft. Worth for 43 years. She had worked for several Ft. Worth beauty shops and owned her own shop until she retired in 1973.

She was a charter member of Lodge 180. She and her son had donated the Texas flag and United States flag to Lodge 180.

A private cryptside service was held Saturday, December 19, 1987 at Laurel Land Mausoleum, Ft. Worth, Texas.

Survivors include one son, Bill Butler of Ft. Worth and two sisters, Zelda Duncan and Ulma Fraser, both of Ft. Worth.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge Bennview No. 153, La Salle, wish to express our sincere sympathy on behalf of our entire membership to the family of brother ADOLPH ELLES, 75, of La Salle, who died Saturday at his home following a sudden illness.

He was born August 21, 1912, in Rosebud, son of the late Joe and Rose Hanulik Elles. A retired farmer, he had lived in La Salle since 1929. He was a member of the St. Theresa Catholic Church of La Salle and the SPJST Lodge.

Brother Elles married the former Ella Gerik on November 1, 1939, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in La Salle.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Sunday at Slavik Funeral Home Chapel.

A prayer service was at 2 p.m.

Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Michael O'Shaughnessy officiating. Burial followed at Memory Gardens Cemetery of Edna under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home.

Do you know that Ema Destinova, the world's best female opera singer in the first twenty years of this century, was also an excellent violin and piano player?

.He's Number One

Ema Destinova (Emmy Destinn), her original name Emilie Pavlina Kittlova, was born at midnight 26 - 27th of February 1878 in Prague. Her parents loved music and little Ema (Emilka) received lessons on the piano and the violin in her early childhood. When she was about eight years old she gave concerts on the latter instrument, proving herself a prodigy. She began studying singing four years later with Marie Loewe Destinn, a prominent vocal teacher in Prague, whose profound and decisive influence in the shaping of Ema's career led the young student to take her teacher's name permanently.

Ema's entry into the opera singing was full of difficulties, which she overcame thanks only to her persistence and a self - belief in her true talents. Some of the obstacles in her career seemed to be unpassable; sle6na Destinova (Miss Destinn) described herself one of these, her aborted audit at the Prague's Czech National Theater in 1897. "After my singing of the two arias from Carmen, the director Subert told me to go home and put my head under the cold shower, to dismiss my thoughts that I ever could be any singer ---." Because of Subert's decision, the nineteen year old Ema had to seek her fortune elsewhere. She tried next at the Opera House at DrOd'any (Dresden, now in East Germany) but "did not pass."

She also flunked her audit at the Theater des Westens in Berlin. Finally she succeeded at the Court Opera in Berlin and made her opera debut on July 19th 1898 at the age of twenty at the New Opera House of the same city as Santuzza in Cavaleria Rusticana.

Later she sang there the role of Alibeta (Elizabeth) in the four - hundredth performance of Tannhauser (The houses from firtree wood). The result was a five - year contract as a regular member of the Berlin Royal Opera, where she made her debut as Santuzza --- the same role she originally debuted at the New Opera House. At the Royal Opera she was hailed for her excellent performances as Mignon, as Marguerite de Valois in Les Huguenots and as Diemut in the Berlin premiere of the Austrian composer Richard Strauss' Feuersnot in 1901. Strauss himself selected Miss Destinova for the title role in the first presentation of Salome in Berlin in 1905 and invited her to come for the French premiere of the same opera in Paris, France in 1907. Ema. Destinova (Miss Emmy Destinn) also reaped praise in Berlin for her performances in the well known German composer Richard Wagner repertory. She became in a way a protegee of Cosina Wagner, who in 1901, chose her to appear as Senta in the first production of The Flying Dutchman at the famous Bayreuth Festival in Bavaria, Southern Germany.

Karen and Keith Bartrip are parents of Baytown's first baby in 1988. Michael Alan Bartrip, weighing 9 pounds, 5 ounces, was born at 7:59 a.m. Friday, January 1, 1988 at Gulf Coast Hospital. He's the first child for the Baytown couple. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Stavinoha of Highlands, Doris Dimmock of Williamsville, New York, and Donald Bartrip of Arcadia, California. We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 88 in Houston, Texas, wish to express our sincere sympathy and comfort on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of ALFRED J. FROELICH,

Elsie and Frank Brdecka Moving to Fort Bend County, they continued farming in the Cottonwood community and lived on the farm until their retirement, when they moved to Needville.

They keep busy and a young outlook by working in their yard and garden, raising sheep, fishing and dancing.

For the anniversary party, Mrs. Brdecka wore a rose satin chemise dress with flounced tea - length skirt and long tunic lace bodice. Her corsage of American Beauty roses was trimmed with gold leaves and tied with gold metalic ribbons.

The anniversary cake was a two tiered confection with the second layer elevated on columns. It was topped with the traditional gold "50" ornament. Pink roses and gold leaves decorated the layers and base. The groom's chocolate cake was decorated

with a scene featuring a rowed garden, a farmer and a pen of sheep.

Music for the afternoon dance was provided by the Central Texas Sounds.

The honored couple's first dance was to "You're Something Special To Me," sung by their grandson, Cary Lamensky.

A roast beef supper was later served to approximately 250 guests.

(Brother Frank and Sister Elsie Brdecka have been very active in SPJST Society work for many years and Sister, Brdecka was very active in SPJST Youth Club activities for many past years, having served as District VI youth counselor; the longest in consecutive years. Features Brdeckas Celebrate 50 - Year Marriage Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brdecka of Needville celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Sunday, November 1, 1987, at a party where cohosts were their two daughters, Biari Lamensky and Trudy Harris; their son - in - law, Calvin Lamensky; and their grandchildren, Cary and Brett Lamensky and Desire and Lance Harris.

Elsie Foytik and Frank Brdecka were married in Houston on November 1, 1937. They lived the first two years of their married life in Matagorda County, where they started their farming career.

In 1905 Ema Destinova appeared at Covent Garden in the title role of the first performance in England of Madama Butterfly, opposite the immortal singer Enrico Caruso, and on July 14, 1902, in Britain's premiere of Baron Frederick D' Erlanger's Tess.

Ema Destinova became a world famous figure in opera when she made her American debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on November 16, 1908. She sang in the title role of Aida, the great Caruso was Radames, and the outstanding conductor Toscanini, also making his American debut, was in the pit.

Though attention was focused on Toscanini, Ema Destinova (Emmy Destinn) did not go unnoticed.

Richard Aldrich described in the New York Times her voice as a "voice of great power, dramatic in expression, flexible and wholly subservient to her intentions, which are those of a singer of keen musical feeling and intelligence."

She remained with the Metropolitan Opera through the 1915 - 1916 season, appearing as Minnie in the world premiere of The Girl of the Golden West on December 10, 1910, and starring in several noteworthy American premieres such as Eugene D' Albert's Tiefland on November 23, 1908 in the role of Marta, in Catalani's La Wally on January 6, 1909, in the title role, in Franchetti's Germania on January 22, 1910 in the role of Ricke and in Tchaikovsky's Pique Dame as Lisa on March 5, 1910. As Minnie, wrote Richard Aldrich in the New York Times, she was "singularly delicious ---- She acted the part with sincerity, and her singing of the music ---- was of splendid power and expressiveness." Emmy Destinn propagated abroad (meaning out of the old country) Czech musical composers. While with the Metropolitan Opera in New York she arranged with the well - known musical composer and writer Gustav Mahler the premiere of Prodand nevesta (The Bartered Bride) by the great Czech composer Bedrich Smetana. This opera, where Ema sang the role of Matenka (Mary), was a smashing success with the American public. The Czech - Americans present in this audience were overwhelmed by the profound emotion to hear this splendid opera sung in Czech on the Metropolitan stage on the American soil.

The opera star Ema Destinova helped to open the following Metropolitan Opera seasons: 1909 1910 in the title role of La Gioconda; 1911 - 1912 in the title role of Aida; 1913 - 1914, again in La Gioconda; and 1914 - 1915 as Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera. The last of these operas was revived on November 22, 1914, to commemorate the centenary of Verdi's birth. Her other roles at the Metropolitan were Tosca, Santuzza, Madama Butterfly, Pamina in The Magic Flute, Alice Ford in Falstaff, Nedda in I Pagliacci, Eva in Die Meistersinger, Elsa in Lohengrin (dealing with son of Parsifal and Knight of the Holy Grail in German legend), Elisabeth in Tannhauser, Agathe in Der Freischiltz, Valentine in Les Huguenots, Gerhilde in Die Walktire and the Priestess in Aida.

Ema Destinova brought to each of these roles a dramatic power, a big voice that could be also hypersensitive, a remarkable range, and thorough

musicianship. She made Tosca, as W.J. Henderson wrote in the Sun "a woman of the people --- well - poised in her splendid intelligence." Of her Cio - Cio - San, in which she had proved sensational at Covent Garden in London, England in 1903, before singing the role at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, another critic from the Sun remarked: "The artistic glory of her impersonation is found --in wonderfully eloquent singing of the music, to which her dramatic voice is perfectly suited." When the Metropolitan Opera of New York made its first tour of Europe in 1910 Ema Destinova (Emmy Destinn) was starred with the immortal Enrico Caruso in the opening performance of Aida, the great conductor Toscanini .! conducting, at the theatre du Chatelet in Paris.

Ema Destinova was proud of her Czech heritage. "I will never deny my nationality and I cannot play the role of a renegate" she stated in the Berliner Tagblatt (The Berlin Daily) as her defense against the disapproval of her gift of large sum of money to the Czech educational cause, when she guest starred in Carmen in Prague.

Ema Destinova (Emmy Destinn) became so popular in this country during the heydays of her glory that certain new types of roses, a brand of cigarets and the Melba Toast type biscuits were named after her before the World War I. At this stage of her life she was recognized as a superstar drawing the top notch salary. She was so liked and admired that her performances were always sold out, making them a golden opportunity for scalpers who were selling the tickets to her performances for up to 150 dollars! (This was quite an amount of money before the World War I!) The heavenly Emmy was at that time the favorite partner of the great Italian singer Caruso, she had many friends among the elite of the musical world and was acquainted with the emperors, kings and other aristocrats of Europe.

Although she was warned by friends not to do it, Ema Destinova returned to her native land after the 1915 - 1916 season of the Metropolitan Opera.

(Destinova's homeland -- our old country -- was at that time part of the conglomerate Austro - Hungarian Empire, which together with the Imperial Germany, Turkey and Bulgaria was since 1914 waging a war against the Tzarist Russia, Italy, France, England and other Allies. --The United States did not participate in this war, called WWI, until 1917.)

Ema Destinova hurled all her energy and influence into helping promote the independence of Czechoslovakia, an activity that led the Austrian Ministry of Police in Vienna to revoke her passport. She was thus denied the opportunity to propagate the Czech cause abroad and also could not keep her contract with the Metropolitan Opera in New York. As a matter of fact, she was interned for the duration of World War I on her estate Strai nad Ne2arkou, not far from Jindrichuv Hradec (Southern Bohemia), which she bought in 1914. After WWI Ema Destinova appeared at the Czechoslovakia Festival in London, England from May to the middle of June 1919. Afterwards she returned to the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Aida on December 8th 1919, remaining with the company through the 1920 - 1921 season. Her layoff of more than three years during the wartime internment had permanently impared the brilliance of her voice and

she retired, returning to Czechoslovakia in 1926. She spent the remaining few years of her life at her chateau Stral nad Nelarkou in the south of Bohemia. There she met the Czech Air Force, officer Joe Halsbach who crashlanded on her estate and whom she nursed back to health. Her marriage to this twenty years younger pilot soon dissolved, and to make things worse for her mind, she was not able to secure a vocal professorship at Prague's conservatory due to the envy and grudge of a couple of influential individuals. Her estate, badly neglected by the previous owners, swallowed practically all of her money so she spent quite a bit of her time fishing in the Nezarka river with its surrounding brooks, and in the long hikes through the hilly groves on her estate and its neighborhood. The picturesque countryside around her estate helped to soothe her nerves and re - oriented her toward the new activity. She became a writer and soon was the author of a play that was produced, a novel that was published, and a considerable amount of published poetry.

She died suddenly by a heart attack at the age of not even 52 years on January 28, 1930 in Ceske Budejovice.

(Budweis, the German name of Ceske Budejovice, the largest city in the Southern Bohemia, became a trademark of the popular American Budweiser beer.) The great opera singer Ema Destinova is not forgotten.

On the contrary, she is remembered by many people of all walks of life. One of them is the excellent opera singer Jarmila Novotna, who was in her youth directly associated with Destinova. While attending the Gymnasium in Prague Jarmila Novotna sang at a charity concert attended by Ema Destinova, who urged her to study music seriously.

Following famous Destinova's advice, Novotna attended the Prague Conservatory for a year, then studied voice privately with Ema Destinova.

Jarmila Novotna debuted as Marenka (Mary) v Prodane neveste (in The Bartered Bride) on 27th of June 1926 v Narodnim divadle (in the Czech National Theatre) in Prague and went on to become one of the best opera singers of the world. She became a citizen of the United States in 1946 and established her permanent residence in New York- City. That Ema Destinova (Emmy Destinn) is not forgotten is corroborated also by the following: In the early 1970s a 1908 recording of Carmen with. Emmy Destinn singing the title role was re - released on the Discophilia label.

This laudatory curriculum vitae of the great Ema Destinova was written at the occasion of her 110th birthday anniversary to enhance the overall ethnic awareness of Czech - Texans towards our rich heritage.

Monday afternoon, January 25, the Hope Lutheran Church of Beasley came and had services and brought cookies and had a social afterwards.

The Czech Heritage Society Of Texas President Raymond Skrabanek of the State of Texas Czech Heritage Society called the meeting to order on January 23, 1988, at 10 a.m. The meeting was held at the Memorial Library in Richmond, Texas (George Memorial Library). This was the first meeting of the new officers of the term 1988 - 89. The roll call reported two officers absent.

Professor Robert Skrabanek of Texas A&M University made a report on a book, he authored entitled "We're Czechs."

The purpose of the Czech Society was reviewed. Secretary Allen Livanec of Deer Park recommended that the Society should give assistance to the already eight chapters organized and look for new chapters only when requested.

The newsletter will be published at the present rate of three or four a year.

Vice President Mary Bennett of Richmond reported that the Fort Bend County Chapter of Czech Heritage Society will have a Czech Festival at Rosenberg. Then the County Chapter will host the State meeting on May 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. The local chapter will present a workshop.

Treasurer Linhart Steffek of Stafford reported on the State level assets.

Appointed was Sharon Wallingford of Rosenberg newsletter editor and assistant reporter took photos of several officers.

State Trustee Birdie Pech of Houston and Robert Janak of Beaumont reminded the officers of issue of the constitution during the meeting's progress.

Mr. J.J. Pech knowledgeable in many phases of Czech history asked Jerry Prochazka of Crosby, a director of the State SPJST Czech organization, whether some financial assistance could be granted to the Society. Mr. Prochazka, said in effect, that remains to be determined by the SPJST State officers.

Editor Doug Kubicek of Nase Dejiny was present. Victor Muller, president of Fort Bend County Chapter, was also present.

Moravian Potato

by Kevin Hannan I noticed, as a child, listening to the older generations speak Czech that many people did not get too far along talking to a stranger before they would stop and apologize for not speaking "correctly." This was always done in a quiet and rather humble way which is difficult to describe if a 'person is not

familiar with our people in Texas and their ways. One thing I noticed though was that while they often claimed that they were speaking incorrectly, they were all usually speaking a similar language and making the same "mistakes."

As I've had the opportunity to study the subject a little more, I've come to recognize that the Czech people of Texas for the most part speak Moravian dialect. These are the same dialects spoken a century ago in Moravia and neighboring Silesia. The Czech language spoken in Texas is of interest to linguists because the dialects it is based upon are vanishing today in Moravia.

Most Czech - Moravians in Texas immigrated from the ethnographic regions of Vala gsko and Lagsko in Moravia and neighboring Silesia. This accounted for about 80 percent of the total Czech population in Texas. A group of immigrants from northeastern Bohemia near the town of Cermna were of historical significance and immigrants from other parts of Bohemia and southern Moravia also settled in Texas. Yet they were overwhelmed in numbers and cultural influence by Moravians from Valagsko and Lagsko.

An important source of information about the Czech - Moravians of Texas is a short article written by journalist L.W. Dongres and published in the 1924 "Amerikan Kalendaf." In 1893 the magazine "Hospodaf" sent Dongres on assignment to Texas to study farming methods among Czech Moravians. Hospoda • , published at that time by Jan Rosicky in Nebraska, was a weekly publication largely aimed at farmers. Dongres and his family lived in Texas for a while and he developed a good understanding of the state's Czech - Moravians and their ways.

Dongres recounted his arrival at Fayetteville, Texas in 1893. A black youth was waiting on him at the train station and grabbed his bags as he stepped off the train. The youth told him in "fluent Moravian:" "I'll get your bags for you." Noting Dongres' amazement, he explained: "I'm a black Moravian -- a black monster." ("Ja su ern Moravec -- potvora eernjr.") Dongres noted that among several black families in the Fayetteville area some children spoke better "Moravian" than English.

Dongres wrote about the influence of Moravian everywhere among Czechs in Texas and noted that, as the language of school and church, it came to be spoken even by Czech children.

According to Dongres, the first immigrants considered it their duty to preserve their language at all costs.

Early immigrants refused to send their children to English - language schools, even though under the influence of Judge Augustin Haidugek most of the community eventually accepted the necessity of learning the English language. Settling in Texas decades before the creation of the state of Czechoslovakia, most immigrants preserved their identity as Moravians and they retained their native dialect.

Dongres tells about speaking with a native of Vala gsko about bricks and brick - kilns. The Valach words for this differ from proper Czech. Dongres wrote that the Valach, when speaking, placed great emphasis on the differences in dialect to give him to understand that there they used only the Valach words.

Dongres described one of his first attempts to study farming methods in Texas: "I arrived on horseback at a farm somewhere in Fayette County and

from the road I called to a woman working in a garden, whom I assumed to be one of our people.

Good morning, ma'am. Could you tell me please if there are some Czechs living around here?'

'Good morning,' came her reply.

'We're only Moravians around here, but over there,' pointing towards the Colorado River, 'about 4 miles away on the river bend lives a Czech who's come down from the north.'

'And where is your husband, ma'am?' `In the field. He's planting kobzole with the ogary.'

Enthusiastic about the opportunity of broadening my practical knowledge about this mysterious product (`kobzole') and how it is planted 'with ogary,' I stepped off my horse and set out after the farmer in the field. There I learned that kobzole are, in fact, potatoes and °gall are boys.". The woman told Dongres in Moravian dialect that her husband was planting potatoes with the boys and he was puzzled by the unfamiliar Moravian words.

I recently ran across some information about the term "kobzole." Most modern Czechs are unfamiliar with the word. It seems that the evolution of the term kobzole is an interesting bit of history and this forms part of the unique folk culture of the Czech - Moravian community in Texas.

Potatoes were brought to Europe by Spainards from South America in the 16th century. The introduction of the potato had a considerable impact upon Europe. It was something of a miracle vegetable, which flourished even on small plots of land and in relatively poor soil. The potato yielded 4 times the food product of wheat. The potato was responsible for a population explosion in 19th century Europe. A peasant could raise enough potatoes on an acre of land to feed his family and livestock for a year. By 1830 the potato was the main staple of the poor European's diet.

The potato was introduced in Bohemia and Moravia in the 18th century by Prussin troops. During the "potato war," as the Czechs called it, Prussians were observed eating the vegetable. The Czech word for potatoes is "brambory," derived from the name of the Prussian state of Brandenburg.

The potato, like the tomato, was first grown by Europeans as a decorative plant. Many were afraid to eat the vegetable. It was in the poorer regions that potatoes were first cultivated and eaten. In Moravia, it was the mountain folk who first adopted the potato. The mountainous areas of Moravia were poorly suited to farming. Throughout history survival there had been a struggle and the local population was often forced to travel to other regions for work or to emigrate. In Moravia, in the Hand region, with its fertile fields and rich crops, the potato was long considered poisonous and the population refused to eat it.

Use of the term "kobzole," which had confused Dongres, was confined to a relatively small region of Moravia and neighboring Silesia. It was in the ethnographic region of Lagsko, between Valag sko and the Polish border, that potatoes were called "kobzole." According to the book " -Minsk° v Historii a Povestech" published in 1935, there exist several possible explanations for the origin of kobzole.

Some believe that the word derives from the verb "obzolat'." This word from dialect means "to envelope, to

enclose." Perhaps kobzole arose from this word in the sense that potatoes were cooked covered with clay or potatoes were enveloped in flour. The dialects of Moravia are quite rich and expressive. Local dialects contain many words such as the verb "obzolat"' which are not found in proper Czech.

Another possible explanation offered is that potatoes were first grown in the Tegin area by a certain farmer from the village of Horn( Hlohov named Kobzel. The first recorded cultivation of potatoes in the area dates from 1735. Tegin is a city dating from the 9th century that over the centuries has belonged to both Bohemia and Poland.

The town was divided in half in 1920 between Cesky -Min (Czech) and Cieszyn (Polish). The town and surrounding country on both sides of the border have an interesting history and folk culture. Partly because a border that is nearly impassable for the local population separates the region, little attention today is given to the area's folk culture. Perhaps ethnographers there are unaware that Texans also grow and eat "kobzole."

Other terms for potato were also used in Texas. The Slovak word for potatoes is "zemiaky." In Valagsko and eastern Moravia, where there was a strong Slovak cultural influence, "zemaky" was used. In Polish Silesia the word is "zemjoky" and proper Polish is "ziemniaky" (pronounced: 2emfiaky). In the rain area another word sometimes used was "erdeple," derived from the German Erclapfel -"land apple."

The fare of the common people in Moravia and Silesia was simple: potatoes, cabbage, milk -- often curdled. The potato was a favorite food and various ways of preparing it developed. Some favorite foods from potatoes were placky, osuchy, brutfanoky and haluKky. Placky, or potato pancakes, are still eaten in Texas. One of the most popular dishes in Bohemia and Moravia is knedliky, dumplings made from potato flour.

A problem accompanying the widespread cultivation of the potato was increased alcohol production and its negative influence. The license to produce alcoholic beverages in the 19th century was often held by the nobility and proprietors of estates.

Much of the nobility, chiefly Germans, had little real interest in the welfare of the common people. In the social and nationality conflicts that arose in Moravia and Silesia in the 19th century, alcohol often was a weapon used by the nobility. Germans profitted politically and economically from the sale and use of alcohol by peasants and workers. In northern Moravia and Silesia widespread production of alcohol was impossible until the introduction of the potato.

Kobzole is a word which is used by a relatively small population in Czechoslovakia. It is interesting that the word survives in Texas, along with zemaky and brambory, as a name for potatoes. This is part of the rich and unique heritage of the Czech Moravian people of Texas. With the great importance of agriculture for this community, perhaps this explanation of the origin and use of the word "kobzole" will be of interest.

K dal gimu rozvoji Kolina qznamne plispela 2 . eleznice. Nejprve to byla v roce 1845 tak zvand Statni draha z Moravy pies Ceskou Tfebovou, Chocefi, Pardubice a Kolin do Prahy, a pak tak zvand Severozapadni draha postavend v roce 1871, jej12 zrizenim se stalo mesto Kolin Ieleznienim uzlem. V Koline se v druhe polovine minuleho stoleti zaeal velmi slibne rozvijet narodne kulturni 2ivot, na kterjr meli znaen* vliv mistni anebo pfechodne tu bydlici spisovatele a basnici. Kolin rovne2 kulturne povznesl a pozdeji vgude proslavil znamS7 kapelnik a hudebni skladatel Franti gek Kmoch.

Tu v tomto meste se rovne2 narodil Otakar Fischer, oslavenec meho dnegniho vzpominkoveho elanku. V9znamn9 Cesk' historik, pfekladatel, literarni kritik, basnik a profesor nemecke literatury na Universite Karlove Otakar Fischer se narodil 20.kvetna v roce 1883. Po zakladnim gkoleni v rodnem meste a po studiich v Praze a v Berline Fischer se stal od roku 1910 profesorem na pra2ske universite.

Ptitom pusobil u2 od roku 1906 a2 1919 jako knihovnik pra2ske universitni knihovny a v letech 1910 a2 1912 byl dramaturgem Narodniho divadla. Behem sve einnosti na Karlove universite Otakar Fischer se rovne2 venoval otazkam literarni psychologie (v roce 1916 vydal ptirueku k tomuto tieelu) a dejinam dramatickeho basnictvi. Po skoneeni prvni svetove valky pak te2 vyueoval dejiny svetoveho dramatickeho basnictvi na statni konservatofi. Jeho literarni odkaz je v9znamn9 i pokud je vedovan vedeckemu studiu basnick9ch genie nemecke literatury. Tu je to ptedne monografie o Kleinstovi (1912), o Nietzchovi (1913) a monograficka prate o Heinovi. Fischerovy sbirky basni jsou tyto: Kralovstvi sveta (1911), Ozatena okna (1916), HoIIcI ket (1918), Leto (1919), Kruhy (1921), Hlasy (1923) a Host (1930). Z jeho vedeck9ch a kritick9ch rozboril Du ge a slovo (1929) a Slovo a svet (1937) vynikaly psychologickou analysou tvfirei osobnosti a jejiho umeleckeho v9razu. V dramatice Otakar Fischer napsal tato dila: Karl gtejn (1916), Ptemyslovci (1918), Herakles (1919), Orloj sveta (1921) a Otroci (1925).
