The attention of our local lodge officers and members is being called to the letter from the SPJST Finance Committee written by Sister Rita Vanek, Finance Committee secretary.

Please be sure to bring these notices to the attention of your members; the members of the Finance Committee need to know about ACTUAL hardship cases of our members.

Contact with all of your various SPJST Committee members is important to all of our membership and the future of our SPJST Fraternal Society. *** Our lodge correspondents are reminded to begin sending in the recent histories of their lodges for the "Convention Issue" because time is fleeting rather rapidly and, please, DO NOT wait`too long; this is a large issue and will take time to set into type to print in time. DO NOT BE DELAYING THIS! *** Saturday, January 30th yours truly attended the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) meeting at SPJST Lodge No. 186 in Caldwell which was attended by a number of officials of the non - profit organization trying to raise a total of $500,000 for the establishment of a permanent endowment called a Czech language 'Chair" at one of our Texas state - supported universities either in Austin or College Station.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge has sent out some forms with other correspondences to some persons and has had good results with same. This is appreciated by CEFT officials very much. This does not cost our Supreme Lodge any postage in this manner and helps a very worthy cause. CEFT commends the SPJST for this effort.

While at the meeting, Dr. Clint Machann mentioned the book about the "Czech Music in Texas" symposium held in Bryan in the recent past and presented your editor with the information which follows. The book is very complete and interesting, having read it. ** Proceedings of Czech Music Symposium published about one year ago, some fifteen hundred people converged on Bryan, Texas to attend a program entitled Czech Music in Texas: A Sesquicentennial Symposium. The three - day program, held November 14 - 16, was part of the state's Sesquicentennial Celebration and included numerous musical performances which illustrated the rich heritage of Czech music in Texas.

Lectures and discussions concerning Czech music in Texas were also part of the program, and several of these have now been edited and published in a proceedings volume that is being made available to the general public.

Contents include papers by Josef Skvorec14, Zdena Salivarova, Zdenek Salzmann, Michael Beckerman, John J. Karas, John K. Novak, James P, Leary, Calvin C. Chervenka, and Erich Sefcik, as well as the transcript of a panel discussion on polka music moderated by Bernard M. Gebala and a summary of interviews concerning,,

Texas Czech bands by James W. Mendl.

The spiral - bound book is being offered for sale for the cost of printing plus a five - dollar donation to the Czech Educational Foundation's drive to establish an endowed chair of Czech at a major Texas university. The total cost is $16.69, plus an additional $3 to cover postage and handling if ordered by mail. The book may be ordered from: On The Double, Inc., 331 University Drive College Station, TX 77840 *** Most of our members and readers of Vestnik know and have heard of the very popular "Bartered Bride" (Prodana nevesta) written by the renowned Czech composer and playwright Bedrich Smetana.

Now, you all will be glad to know that four performances of the three act production will be staged for four (4) consecutive days (February 25, 26, 27 at 7:30 p.m. and February 28 at 3 p.m.) at Jones Theater on the Baylor University Campus at Waco in the English language with full orchestra accompaniment for the public to see.

This is a production all of you should try to see (especially our younger Czech people because they can't have an excuse that they do not understand the language!) There are about 350 seats available for each performance with free parking near the theater.

Tickets will be available beginning Monday, February 15th by calling 755 - 1861 on the Baylor Campus. You are encouraged to take advantage of this once - in - a - long - time chance to see a beautiful performance of a most popular stage production.

Dr. Peeler and Director Janette Bookspan say you will not be disappointed. *** An article of historical value appeared in last week's Vestnik which was written by Brother Bill Malina of Houston. Too many of our Czech oriented students and people really do not know the history of the past 1,000 years or so, especially the last 400 years of the Czech - Moravian people; the article, to a certain extent, retraced the facts as they happened. *** You may wish to read the article in this issue, written by Brother John J. Karas which is very interesting, historically, in the English Section. *** Mr. Antonin Hora of the Czechoslovak Embassy in Washington, D.C. is scheduled to be in the Central Texas area -February 23, 24, 25 and returning to Washington, D.C. February 26th. It is possible he will visit West, Temple and may be able to attend the February 25th (Thursday) evening performance of the Bartered Bride at Baylor. *** First Aid For Nosebleed 1. Have the person sit up with his head tilted back.

2. Grasp the nose firmly between the thumb and forefinger.

3. If bleeding continues, gently insert small wads of cotton or gauze into the nose, and then press the nostrils firmly together again.

4. If a clot fails to form, apply cold compresses to the nose, lips and back of the neck.

5. If bleeding still persists, consult physician. ***

Submit Hardship Cases To Finance Committee For 1988

Jim began his employment with SPJST August, 1986.

Dorothy Tomasek, received recognition for 35 years of devoted service in the SPJST Home Office. She began her career with the Society in 1952 while the offices were located in Fayetteville, Texas. She currently holds the position of Assistant to the Secretary - Treasurer.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: We are preparing for the 1988 Convention to be held in Temple on June 19, 1988 and, as in the past, the convention has provided assistance to members of the SPJST Society who were judged as hardship cases. We would like to continue this policy at the June Convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his/her name to the local lodge officers who, in turn, will review the case.

—SPJST2. The application must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

The SPJST has a very efficient office staff. Many members throughout the State have not had an opportunity to meet the people they talk to on the phone when calling the Home Office. We would like to introduce you to some of these people through the Vestnik.

3. The application must explain why he/she needs assistance.

4. There is no age limit for the member who needs assistance.

5. It makes no difference where the member is living.

6. The donation is not of a great some, and is for one time only.

7. The application must be mailed to the Finance Committee no later than May 30, 1988. Letters postmarked after May 30th will not be considered.

All cases will be reviewed by the committee before the convention; none will be accepted at the convention.

As a representative of the Publication Committee of District VII, I wish to inform your lodges and members that our committee will have our first pre - convention meeting in latter part of February.

If any lodges and members have any recommendations on how to make our Vestnik better, more informative or more attractive for our members, please submit your recommendation to me by 15th February 1988, so that I have time to compile the information received and bring it up with the Publication Committee at our pre convention meeting.

Remember, that what we do at this next convention we have to live with for a period of four years, so let's all get our thinking cap on and tell our Publication Committee representatives what we like or don't like about the

present format, print, quality of paper, size, etc.

There was some thought about enlarging the Vestnik in size and possibly going to mailing Vestnik once every two weeks instead of every week.

Please think about all of those options and let me have your true feeling so that I can represent you well at the next convention recommedations for the Vestnik. No. 54, West Quarterly Meeting

Lodge

The 4th quarterly meeting of Lodge No. 54, West was called to order by President Ted Kocian at 1 p.m. on December 6, 1987.

The Pledge of Allegiance to our flag was recited by all present. Everyone remained standing for a few moments of silence in remembrance of our departed Sister Ruth Rose Ammeter who died on November 25, 1987.

President Kocian welcomed everyone and thanked the Sokol members for all their effort in decorating the hall and giving it the beautiful, festive appearance.

Roll call of officers showed all to be present. Secretary Emery read the minutes of the September 13, 1987 meeting. These were approved as read.

Treasurer Freddie Kaluza gave the treasurer's report, which was approved as read. He also reported that all of the legal proceedings have been completed regarding the sale of the property to the Sokol organization.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave her report, which was also approved as read. Our total membership as of November 30, 1987 was 342 active members and 329 paid up members for a total of 671.

President Kocian read a letter from Brother Jerry Mikulas of Supreme Lodge informing us that our lodge is alloted 5 delegate slots for the convention, 5 alternates and 508 votes.

He also read the guidelines which are to be followed in submitting data to be used in compiliation of the commemorative record of Texans of Czech ancestry who served in wars fought since 1898. Information sheets to be filled out were available at the meeting. The deadline for submitting these was December 31, 1987.

Secretary Emery read correspondence from Brother Jerry Mikulas of Supreme Lodge informing us that our lodge has been converted to direct billing. He thanked Sister Maxine Sefcik for her outstanding assistance and the efforts she put forth for the benefit of the membership. He stated that it is members like Maxine who make SPJST the efficient organization that it is.

Secretary Emery also has the forms that need to be completed to have your name placed in the Senior Citizen Directory.

The following members were elected delegates to the convention: Ted Kocian, Maxine Sefcik, Josephine Kocian, John J. Mynar, and Beanie Kacir. The alternates are Rudy Sefcik, and Lillie Mynar.

Vice President John Emery held election of officers for 1988. After there were no nominations off the floor, a motion was made and seconded that the present officers be elected by acclamation. The motion carried. There were many hours spent in called meetings and much work had to be done to complete the sale of property to the Sokol organization.

All members are reminded to complete their record of hours and money spent on charitable events and turn this in to Sister Beanie Kacir as soon as possible.

President Kocian thanked the following members for helping prepare the delicious dinner for our Christmas social: Maxine Sefcik, Lillie Matus, Lillie Mynar, Eleanor Uptmore, John Emery and Josephine Kocian. Also thanks to Freddie Kaluza for preparing the Christmas goodie bags.

Our first quarterly meeting of 1988 will be held in Lone Star Hall at 2 p.m. on March 6th. Everyone is urged to attend these meetings because important matters are discussed and voted on in our meetings. These are matters that involve the entire membership and we need more input from the members. It seems that all decisions are left up to the few who attend regularly. Remember, if you are not present, your voice cannot be heard and your vote cannot count.

After the meeting was adjourned, the Sokol group joined us for a social hour and a delicious dinner. Awards were presented and games were played.

After dinner, Santa made his appearance, spoke with the children and listened to their requests and passed out goodie bags. A great time was had by all present.

Lodge No Antonio Report The January meeting of Lodge 133, San Antonio convened at 2 p.m.

January 17th. The president led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for all deceased members. President Trilicek then offered the condolences of the members to Brother Bill Mares on the death of his wife, Stella.

Sister Marcella Kleprlik turned the scrapbook materials to Emil Manila, the new chairman of the Scrapbook and Anniversary Committee. Brother Trilicek thanked Sister Kleprlik for the years of work and dedication to the lodge. He then presented her plaque with the thanks of all members.

Brother Albin Popp was reported still on the sick list. Stephanie Havelka was welcomed as the newest member of the lodge.

Brother Don Netek reported on the By - laws Committee. He read examples of recommendations for the By - law Committee. He asked members to present any ideas they might have. Brother Emil Matula offered some suggestions.

Members celebrating January birthdays were Joe Spacek, Ann Spacek, Frances Konecny, Anthony Trilicek, Don Netek, Bill Mares, Evelyn Matula and Henrietta Kalmus. `Split the Pot' was won by Brother Adolph Popp and Sister Ann Swize.

The attendance prize was won by Dominic Netek, 1st; Jarolyn Popp, 2nd; Otto Hureta, 3rd.

After the meeting, members enjoyed refreshments and a games party.

Notice To Members Of SPJST Lodge 133 Dear Members: Lodge No. 133, San Antonio is now on direct billing. This means you will receive insurance bills directly from the Home Office in Temple. You will receive another notice from the local lodge regarding social dues. Social dues are $3 a year for adults.

The financial secretary will make an effort to collect all dues until January, 1989. That way all members will be billed at the same time.

We would really like to see more members at the lodge meeting. The next meeting will be February 21, 1988 at St. Margaret Mary Activity Center at 1314 Fair Avenue at 2 p.m.

Lodge No. 133 will also host the District VII meeting on April 17, 1988.

Lodge No. 142, Houston Dear Readers: Lodge 142, Houston held their Christmas Party on Friday, December 18, 1987 at 7 p.m. with a very good attendance.

We were very pleased to have our Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and family, District V Director Jerry Prochazka, District V Youth Counselor Marie Stayton and husband, A.J., and S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes Director Louis Hanus visit us.

The youth club presented a program entitled "The Birth of Jesus Christ."

They did a very fine job. The youth club sponsored a ticket sale which was a success and the drawing of the prizes was also held that night.

The Legends Band provided music for the evening. They really sounded great.

Santa Claus was able to stop and visit with us. He passed out some very

Dear Members: The first monthly meeting of 1988 of Lodge Rozkvet No. 172 in Pasadena, was opened by new lodge President Alvin Sefcik on Wednesday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. The opening remark was made in Czech and then in English.

Brother Irvin Theiss led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and then we all remained standing to the rnemor of our deceased brothers and sisters.

The last month's meeting minutes and the last executive meeting minutes were read by Sister Carla Krenek; these were accepted after noted changes.

Correspondence from Brother Leonard Mikeska of the Supreme Lodge was read. The good news was in reference to the lodge receiving additional discount of our note due to our having over 50 new members for the year 1987.

At this time, I would urge the members of Lodge No 172 to notify our sales representatives of any new prospects for membership so that we can meet our goal of over 50 new members for 1988. Beautiful plaques were presented to Vlasta Machann, charter member and secretary to Lodge No 172 for the past 13 years, and to Victor Petr as "Fraternalist of the Year" for Lodge No. 172. These are two deserving members and are remembered as being devoted and unselfish workers of our lodge.

Guests at our meeting were District V Director Jerry Prochazka, S.P.J.S.T. District V Rest Homes Director Louis Hanus and Wayne Retter, who represented the Eagle Center as director in Pasadena.

Drawing for the cash door prize was won, again, by one of the Zella's, this time by Julius. The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m. and refreshments were served b-y the ladies of our lodge.

Attention Lodge 172 Members!

Lodge No. 172, Pasadena would like to hear from all interested persons who would like to take the AARP Driver's Education Course at our lodge. This course is open to anyone whether member of AARP or not, but you have to be at least 50 years of age. At our last January 27, 1988 meeting, I didn't have that information. The cost of the course is $7 per person; the saving on your car insurance is 10 percent, so you can save a bundle.

Any one interested please let your lodge officers, members, etc. know and also let us know when the best time would be for you to attend; we will try to schedule sessions for weekdays and, if there are enough for Saturday, we will try to work that out.

The AARP representative tells me they will have someone at our next meeting on February 24, 1988. They will set it up for 2 sessions, 2 days, 4 hours each; this doesn't have to be consecutive, but 2 days. Our first quarterly meeting of the new year was held January 24, 1988 at 3 p.m. at the home of Evelyn Mikeska.

All reports were given and all were in good order.

The following new members were welcomed into our lodge, Michael Bryant, Jr., Margaret Bryant, Carolyn Smith and Loyd Smith.

The changes in our Rules and Regulations were accepted by our members. Our Rules and Regulations Committee are to be commended on the time and work they put in on these changes.

We were happy to have District V Director Jerry Prochazka at our meeting. After a discussion with the members, he announced that Evelyn Mikeska placed second in District V sales producers and was second One Million Dollar Producer in District V. Great job, Evelyn!

Czech Music In Houston, Texas The SPJST Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra celebrates its 15th birthday this year. The orchestra was organized in 1973 with a group of member musicians from Lodge 88, the sponsoring lodge of the orchestra. This group consisted of Rudy, John and Arnold Dybala, Ladgie Pavelka, Raymond Zapatal and wife, Pat, Arnold Baca, James Rohde, Carolyn Filipp, Pat Parma, Joe Nesvadba, Rueben Holtquist, Tommy Dybala, Frank Kudelka, Wilber Heinsohn and Clarence Baca.

Several members brought their own music which consisted of old stock Czech music like "Julajda," "Blue Skirt," "Muziky Muziky," "Louka Zelend," "Happy Go Lucky," "Jd Rada Tancuju," etc.

The library grew to over 100 songs and, in 1978, V. Kovanda, a native of Czechoslovakia, joined the band. He stated he could write some of the Czech music that is popular in Czechoslovakia. The first two he wrote were "Cerny Cikan" and "Pies Dve Vesnice;" these were played at concerts in the Houston area and soon,

after, other bands were playing the music.

He has now arranged over 75 songs which are played exclusively by the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Band, along with the old favorites which are requested from the crowd. He also arranged the music for the Mazurka, a popular dance in the Czech country.

The orchestra has played numerous concerts in the Houston area for celebrations, dedications and festivals.

The band also travels to other cities and has played on the Strand in Galveston, Kolache Festival in Caldwell, State Fair of Texas held in Dallas every year in October, and the World's Fair held in New Orleans in 1984.

The band does not charge for the concerts, but a small donation to cover travel and expenses is appreciated.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club Lodge 25 Youth Club has been active for over 20 years. The youth meet at the mother lodge where they keep busy making crafts for other people.

Some of the activities the youth club members participate in is an annual trip to Six Flags, bowling and a swim at their local pool.

From The District Youth Counselor District III Youth Holiday-In-The-Park and Lock-In District III youth had an outing on December 18 - 19, 1987 at Six Flags.

Holiday - in - the - Park was attended by 82 youth and youth leaders and six lodges were represented. Our special guests, for the occasion were SYD Claudette Reese, her husband and their children. What an honor for District III. The park was a beautiful sight, the shows were super and everyone seemed to have a great time in spite of the drizzily weather. However, the rain held back until everyone got ready to leave.

The party did not end here. The plans to have a "Lock - in" at Lodge No. 84 in Dallas were still on the agenda.

We are sorry to say that some of you could not attend the lock - in. Those who did certainly enjoyed it. We missed those who could not come and you missed a good time.

Thanks to the leaders who stayed and helped-Louise Burney, District HI President Richard Burney, Gladys Yates and her husband, Claudette Reese and her husband and Lynda Novak.

We want to thank our District III director, Brother Sid Pokladnik, who came over at 5 a.m. and visited with us.

Lodge 66 Youth Club Makes Donations Dear Members, Our youth club met on January 17, 1988. We had 15 members and 5 adults present.

The youth club made a donation to the lodge and to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund.

Our February project will be to make Valentine boxes and fill them with something to eat. The boxes will be judged and prizes given. The boxes will then be auctioned at the adult •neeting.

All youth members are encouraged to be at the February meeting. We will take our group picture to be sent to the Youth Department.

Don't forget to do your T - Shirt design and get it mailed in before March 31st.

Features Dziadek - Lazenby Wedding Pamela Sue Dziadek and Steven Pierce Lazenby, both of Houston, were united in marriage November 14, 1987, at 3 p.m. at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Houston. Father Vincent Thompson officiated the double - ring formal ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gus A. Dziadek of Taft and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Jurica of Shiner and Mr. and Mrs. Gus Dziadek of Tivoli. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawton L. Lazenby of Conroe.

The altar was adorned with arrangements of white mums and candles. Bows of white satin marked the front four pews. Organist was David Daniels playing a variety of classical and contemporary music before and during the ceremony.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of white satin featuring a scalloped lace Queen Anne neckline. The gown featured long satin Renaissance sleeves tapering to points over the wrists with designs of cutwork lace and bridal pearls. The fitted bodice was encrusted with lace and intricate designs of bridal pearls.

Bridal buttons and loops fastened the net illusion -back: The -bouffant' skirt

held designs of lace at center front, falling to a scalloped lace hemline flowing into a cathedral - length train featuring a pyramid of lace and appliques of cutwork lace. A band of silk flowers, seed pearls and pearl sprays held her cathedral - length veil of silk illusion. She wore a gold bracelet that was worn by her great grandmother and her mother on their wedding days and a gold locket, gift of the groom, and a pearl necklace and matching earrings.

The bridal bouquet was a silk cascade of red roses and white stephanotis entwined with English ivy and seed pearls accented with white satin streamers.

Maid of honor was Cookie Naranjo of San Antonio. Bridal attendants were Robin Greeno of San Antonio, Cathy Hunnicutt of Dallas, and Lisa Burchfield of Cary, North Carolina, sister of the groom.

The attendants wore tea - length red satin gowns featuring round necklines accented with bows at the shoulders and tapered sleeves. They carried nosegays of white roses and red baby's breath with white satin streamers.

The flower girl, Rene Stepp of Conroe, was dressed in a tea - length white satin dress accented with white lace and a red satin sash. She carried a white wicker basket filled with miniature red roses.

Mr. and Mrs. Steven P. Lazenby Conner Lazenby of Bryan, brother of the groom, served as best man.

—SPJSTRing bearer was David Stepp of Conroe, carrying a heart - shaped pillow of needlepoint on linen, made by the groom's mother. The names of the bride and groom and the wedding date were sewn into the upper lefthand corner.

The mother of the bride wore a street - length navy blue dress with a white linen and lace collar. The mother of the groom wore a street - length dress of turquoise silk. Both mothers wore corsages of red roses.

Immediately following the ceremony, a reception and dinner were held at the Magnolia Ballroom with a catered meal of barbecue and all the trimmings. Entering the ballroom, the guests were registered by Lisa Jurica of Burleson, cousin of the bride. The marbletop table held the bride's book and a white ceramic basket of red rice bags.

The bride's table, covered with a hand crochet tablecloth made by her great - grandmother, held a triple tiered wedding cake topped with a miniature bride and groom that was used on the wedding cake of the bride's parents at their wedding 26 years ago. Centered between tiers were red roses, fern and baby's breath. The cake was served by Lillian Dziadek of Troy, Michigan, sister - in - law of the Mr. and Mrs. Felix Jurica bride.

Svatopluk tech was born on February 21st, 1846 in the family of an estate manager in Ostfedek in southeastern Bohemia. Cech's birthplace, even though a village, has its beginning in the XIV century, when it belonged to the nearby fortress of , the knights from Ostfedek. Because of his father's transfers Svatopluk spent his early youth also at Liters% close to the city of Beroun, and in Vrand, located at the very historical town of Slant. After his basic schooling in these localities, young Svatopluk entered the Gymnasium at Litomefice. This ancient episcopal city is located at the Labe (Elbe River) in Ceske Stfedohoil (Czech Middle Mountain Range).

After a year there, tech transferred to the Piarist Gymnasium in Prague, where, after his graduation, he enrolled in 1865 in the Faculty of Law at the university. Svatopluk Cech already had begun to write verse at Prague's Gymnasium, and in 1864 he won a prize for a poem published in a provincial journal. He practiced law, first in Slant' then in Prague, from 1872 to 1878, when he abandoned it for literature and editorial work, a double career which lasted most of his life. In 1874 he made a trip across the Ukraine to the Black Sea, to the Caucasus and Constantinople (present Instabul) in Turkey; in 1882 he traveled to Denmark and afterwards to Italy, France and England.

These trips supplied him with literary material and enlightened his otherwise uneventful life. Svatopluk Cech never married. He lived austerely at first in his country home in Obilstvi at Melnik, where the fabled river Vltava empties itself in Labe; later he lived in Tr6ja in Prague. Although he avoided public life and all honors, he was extremely popular and his sudden death on 22nd of February 1908 was an occasion for national mourning. (Interesting fact: Cech was born on February 21st and he died on February 22nd, sixty - two years later).

Cech's poetry is rhetorical and highly decorative. In these qualities it is strongly influenced by the English poet George Gordon Byron (1788 - 1824) and the Russian and Polish Byronists.

Much of his production is narrative.

He wrote a series of long poems on subjects from Czech history: Adamite (The Adamites, 1873), about a radical sect of Hussite times which lived in promiscuity and nakedness; 2i2ka (1879), about the great Hussite leader; Vaclav z Michalovic (Wenceslas of Michalovice, 1880), on the tragedy of Bohemia's subjugation by the Habsburgs after the debacle at Bfla Hora on 8th of November 1620; Dagmar (1883 - 84), about Marketa Dagmar, daughter of the Czech king Pfemysl Otakar I, married to Valdemar II, the king of Denmark; great epic work Rohde na Sione (1898 99), from the Hussite era, was not completed because of Cech's death. A second group of poems consists of allegorical descriptions of contemporary political problems. The best poems from here are Europa (1878) and Slavia (1882). In them Cech assigns to Slays a messianic function: to restore peace to Europe. Some Cech's lyric poems are also political in content. Most successful were his Pisne otroka (Songs of a Slave, 1895), which have been republished at least forty times and have been translated into several other languages. The problem of Negro slavery is, used by the author as a mask for that of Czech servitude, enforced by the hated Habsburg dynasty. Similar concept has another excellent Cech's poem LeยงetinskY Koval' (The Blacksmith of Lektin), here, instead of Habsburgs, the exploitation and social slavery is done by the foreign capitalists. The best from Cech's prose work are the humorous and satirical books about pan Broueek (Mr. Chafer) and his trips and escapades. This excellent set of Cech's tales: Mr. Broueek's trip to the moon (1888), the new epochal trip of Mr. Broueek back into the fifteenth century (1889), the picturesque journeys through Bohemia (1891), Matej (Matthews) Broueek at the exhibition (1892) and Jestfab kontra hrdlieka (The Hawk Against the Turtle - Dove) was translated into several other languages.

These tales were the subject of the opera called VYlety pana Broueka (The Trips of Mr. Broueek) composed by the immortal Leoยง Jandeek, the best musical composer of Moravia in 1917.

Svatopluk Cech, as mentioned elsewhere in my article, was writing many articles for the newspapers and magazines. He was also a member of several editorial boards and founded in 1879 with his brother, Vladimir, and with Servacius B. Heller the monthly Kvety (The Flowers), which he edited until 1899.

Svatopluk tech stressed in his overall literary activity the importance of the ethnic awareness and of love towards the Czech language and culture. We should practice these objectives in our Czech - American organizations.

Funeral services were held January 2, 1988 at the Assumption Catholic Church, with Rev. John Bily officiating.

Rosary was recited January 1st at 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial was under the direction of Ganado Funeral Home and was conducted at Assumption Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were James, Tommy, Timmy and Brian Hicks, Chris Liberda, Dennis Bures, Glenn Green and Steve Blount.

Justina Liberda was born September 5, 1904 in Hallettsville, Texas to the late John Dornak and Thereza Janak Dornak. She was a member of SPJST, Altar Society and was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters.

Survivors are a daughter, Theresa M. Hicks of Ganado; a son, Leroy Liberda of San Antonio; a sister, Jourdine Tymrak of Jourdanton; 12 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Liberda, who died September 28, 1966.

Expression Of Sympathy The officers and members of Lodge No. 65, Crosby, send their deepest sympathy to the family of MARY ANN SETEK, 705 W. Houston, Dayton, Texas. Mrs. Setek died January 4, 1988 in an Anahuac hospital at the age of 100 years.

She was born in La Grange, Texas September 24, 1887 and moved to Dayton in 1910. She and her husband owned and operated the Setek Bakery in Dayton for many years.

Mary Setek became a member of Lodge No. 65, September 1, 1915 and continued her membership until her certificate matured on her 96th birthday.

She is survived by a son, Joe of Dayton; daughter, Cleo Ponder of Dayton; and a sister, Viola Ledbetter of Houston.

Services were held at the Sterling Funeral Chapel, Dayton, with. Dr. Jay Horton officiating. She was laid to rest in the Magnolia Park Cemetery in Dayton.

Catholic Church in Dallas, WFLA No. 401 in Dallas, SPJST Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84, KJZT No. 108 in Dallas, the Circle of Czech Women in Dallas and, in her childhood, she was a member of the Sokol Gymnastic Team in Ennis.

She is survived by her husband, Stanley A. Patak, Dallas; one son, Leonard Patak, Richardson; one daughter, Margie E. Osborne, Midlothian; mother, Mrs. Bessie Brozek, Dallas; two brothers, Emil Brozek and Miro Brozek, Dallas; one sister, Georgia Brozek, Dallas and four grandchildren, Michael and Carl Osborne and Jason and Kristin Patak.

Rosary was recited at Keever Funeral Chapel in Ennis. A beautiful eulogy was given by Brother Cyrill Pokladnik. Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church with Rev. Timothy Gollob of Dallas as the celebrant. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Ennis. Pallbearers were Paul Patak, Raymond Patak, Benny Patak, Charles Patak, Jr., Emil Petr and Milton Nesuda. Honorary pallbearers were Angelo Athas, Andrew Potiska, Ervin Rusnak, Alvin Elsik, Ervin Rusnak, Jerry Kohn and Milton Vrla.

Services for Brother Willis Duane Standard, of 4605 Calle Roble, Temple, were held Wednesday, January 27 at 1 p.m. in Sheffield Funeral Home Chapel, Temple with the Rev. Walter Matus officiating.

Burial was at Garden of Memories Memorial Park in Temple.

Mr. Standard was born August 31, 1935 in Temple to Bill and Helen Zerby Standard. He lived in Temple all his life and was an engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton and United Transportation Union. He was a Catholic.

Survivors are his wife, Bettie Standard of Temple; 3 sons, Steven Duane Standard, Mark William Standard, Kenneth Duane Standard, all of Temple; one daughter, Felecia Hale of Belton; his parents, Bill and Helen Standard of Temple; two stepdaughters, Michelle Lynn Claugh and Missy Jo Morbell, both of Temple; three sisters, Betty Hodge of Austin, Leta Yielding of Temple and Louise Ingram of Troy and two grandchildren.

This is most important during the period, January 1 through April 15, 1988 when IRA Contributions can be applied to the previous year (1987), or the current year (1988). An IRA suited for you is currently paying 810.

This change to properly report IRA Contributions is mandated by IRS to verify the transaction through IRS Form 5498 filed by SPJST and the Individual Income Tax Form 1040 Filing Return.

Please make certain that when IRA Contributions are forwarded, that it is clearly noted on the check, or application for what particular year the deposit is to be applied.
