J. H. Shaw Buggy In The SPJST Museum

Winning Team from Lodge No. 66, Waco.

Early in 1987, a buggy which had belonged to J.H. Shaw of Troy in the late 1890s, was presented to the SPJST Museum by John and Lillie (Stasa) Huber-of Austin. J.H. Shaw was the grandfather of John Huber and drove the buggy many times from Troy to

Temple to buy supplies for his blacksmith shop.

The buggy was restored by Tim Ross and Jody Hillin of the Joe Poboril, Jr. Paint and Body Service in Temple. It is now in the Pioneer Room beside the log cabin built by Otto Hanus.

Pasadena Lodge No. 172 Hosted Czech Heritage Society Of Harris County

Participants from Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Lodge No. 66, Elm Mott had the privilege and pleasure of hosting the Taroky Tournament between two lodges, again. Participants were from Lodge 66, Elm Mott and Lodge 92, Fort Worth. Both had the opportunity to promote our heritage and share in renewed friendships.

Each of the 24 players (12 from each lodge) enjoyed the friendly competition that provided a real chance to sharpen their skills in

Taroky and to enjoy the fellowship among the members.

We want to thank all the members of both lodges who took part in helping set up the tournament as well as those who participated. Especially do we thank Lodge 92 President Albert Kubala for helping organize the event.

To Members Of District VII As your representative on the Bylaw Committee, I wish to remind all members that the Bylaw Committee has already met for their first meeting and will be meeting, again, in February and March. We are now in process in receiving recommendations from our members. I would like to encourage the members to participate as much as possiblein sending their recommendations for changes to the Bylaw Committee. Let us consolidate our thoughts on the many subjects we have spoken about for the past three and one - half years and the changes we feel would make a difference in our organization. This is the time to speak up, we have this privilege, so let us take advantage of this.

The sooner you send in your information, the more time the committee will have to study your request. Your recommendations may be written in long hand, be sure that the changes are signed by you and it is very important that you indentify the recommended change to a particular bylaw that is in the book, please mention the article and page number.

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, January 10, 1988 at Mr. Gatti's meeting room with President Annie Vahalik presiding.

Pledge to the U.S. flag was led by Gary Chudej.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the November and December meetings.

Correspondence followed. Reports were given by Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Co - Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej.

January, February and March birthdays will be honored at the next meeting.

It will be hosted by our lodge on Sunday, April 24, 1988 at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville.

Our lodge voted to contribute $100 to the Special Olympics.

Election of delegates to the State Convention was held. Elected to attend were Annie Vahalik, Erwin, Holy and Gaynell Chudej. Alternates are Evelyn Holy, Helen Zabransky and Elsie Mascheck.

The meeting adjourned.

Dear Members: Well, here I am, finally getting to write to all of you, again. Lodge No. 15 meeting was opened by President Joe Zajicek leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. He welcomed all our guests. We were most happy to have District I Director Andrew Vavra, District II Director Willie E. Kohutek, Sister Adeline Kohutek (his lovely wife), Lillie Zajicek, Thomas Harwell and Elvern Frezell as guests.

We were most happy to see you all and please come, again.

Secretary Charlsie Svetlik read the minutes and they were approved as read. Then we had the sad news; after 25 years of faithful service, Charlsie had to resign. We are very sorry she had to, but we all understand and if we can help you in any way just let us know. The members then elected June Harwell as the new secretary. Good luck, June, with your new job.

Brother Joe introduced Brother Willie E. Kohutek, who gave a very interesting report on how well the SPJST is doing in Texas and out of the top 30 sales representatives, District II has 13. Then he told us some things that are going to happen at the State Convention in Temple. It really does sound like it will be a good one. He told us of a workshop, which will be at Academy Lodge No. 177 on February 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Then he installed the new officers for 1988.

They are: President -- Leslie Sakewitz Vice Pres. -- Joe Zajicek Secretary -- June Harwell Fin. Sec. -- Sidonia Svoboda Treasurer -- Pat Hillman Thank you, Brother Willie, for a good job.

The treasury, kitchen, bar and entertainment reports were accepted as read. The books were audited and found to be in good shape.

"Happy Birthday" was wished to Sister Ann Balusek (who said she is 29 and holding) and Pat Hillman.

On the sick list were Anton Svetlik, Nora Lee Zavodny and Mary. Posival.

We hope all of you are feeling better by now. We really do need more members to come to the meetings to give their ideas on how things should go and for the good times we have at the meetings.

We are thinking about having a picnic this year, so we really do need your help. Please come to the next meeting.

Attention Lodge No. 39 Members In order to keep your membership in good standing, please be advised: According to our new Rules and Regulations, all local social dues will be collected in January of each year.

Since 1988 is the first year under this change and because of direct billing from the Home Office, we agreed to give our members until our March meeting to pay their dues. This is for 1988 only. The regular monthly meeting of our lodge was held at 9:30 p.m. following the bingo games on Monday, January 18, 1988.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order. Youth Member Kim Kacal led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. A minute of silence was observed for the deceased and sick members.

Secretary Leona Macha called the roll of officers, read the minutes of our previous meeting and read all correspondence.

All members present were pleased indeed to hear of receiving 8.75 percent refund from initial insurance sales and renewals for the year 1987.

All officers and trustees reported on their respective duties and activities.

The first lodge meeting of 1988 was held on Sunday, January 17 at 2:30 p.m. by President George Pauling who called the meeting to order. Flags were presented by Mike Warren and Chris Pavlicek with Candace Pavlicek and Kathy Warren leading everyone in the pledge to the flag and lodge motto.

Everyone was asked to remain standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members, Glena Dungan, Frank Leshikar and Theodore Kuropata.

Our Guide Tommy Forbes read the roll call of officers and all were present.

Secretary Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved.

Sister Pruitt then read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge concerning the upcoming Domino and Taroky Tournaments.

The dates are as follows: Taroky Tournament -- March 5 Straight Domino Tournament -March 19 "42" Domino Tournament -- April 9 If you are interested in playing in the tournaments, you may call Sister Bonnie Pruitt at 752 - 5602 for more information.

Sister Darlene Engelke read thank you notes from the John Simcik, Glena Dungan and Frank Leshikar families.

The workshops will be held February 6 at Lodge 177, Academy at 10 a.m.

Brother Jim Locke thanked Brothers Ira Niswanger and George Pauling for spraying the hall.

Minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting held January 13 were read by Sister Langlotz.

Sister Polly Gaidusek gave the Entertainment Committee report; it was that members are to bring casseroles for the February meeting and the committee will provide cookies and coffee. Sister Polly Gaidusek is chairwoman of the committee; co chairs are Gloria Locke and Jewel Worhol; secretary is Sister Bonnie Pruitt; treasurer is Deana Engelke, with other members serving on the Telephone Committee. Thank you note from Ray Orsag was read.

Sister Jeanette Smith, fraternal chairwoman, read thank you notes from Caritas and the Salvation Army.

Sister Gloria Locke sent sympathy cards to Leslie Dungan, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Mueller and Mrs. Frank Leshikar family. Get well cards were sent to Ray Orsag, Jewel Worhol, Rosie Leos, Batt Vernetti. Baby congratulations were sent to Mr. and Mrs. John Reich.

Our youth leader reported that 15 members were present at the youth meeting. Sister Yates reported the club donated money to two charitable causes in December. She also reported they would make Valentine boxes for their February meeting, which will be judged and then will be auctioned off.

Sister Libbie Parma thanked for the check from the youth club. There were memorial donations to the Trust Fund for Frank Leshikar and Glena Dungan

There were many awards and players on both sides who were recognized for their skills. The results are as follows:

Also special recognition was given to our oldest and youngest players; Emil Hanus, Lodge 66 - oldest; Shiela Andrews, Lodge 92 - youngest.

Installation of new officers was held at the regular lodge meeting on Sunday, December 13th. Sec. -- Brother Arnold Vrla Beseda Director -- Sister Helen Vrla Treas. -- Brother Bob Oates After the meeting was the lodge Christmas Party. Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal and gifts were exchanged.

An award was also presented to Mrs. Helen Vrla, Sr.

was a brother to Mrs. Vrla's mother, Mrs. Teresa Dolezalek Matous.

Brothers and sisters lost touch when William left the Texas area in the early part of the century and moved to Wisconsin.

According to Mrs. Hurban, it was indeed an emotional moment when Helen Vrla arrived at her home October 13 from Dallas.

That evening and the following day brought about many more emotional moments as she met her other cousins here: Mrs. Rose Goth and Mrs. Mary Lacina in Phillips and John and Charlie Dolezalek in Rib Lake. "The event was definitely a storybook meeting in reality." said Mrs. Hurban.

The Texas Czech Beseda Dancers participated this year at Christmas at Old Fort Concho in San Angelo, Texas. This is the third year the group has participated. About 35,000 people attended the celebration this year on December 4, 5 and 6. The weather was beautiful and attendance was up from last year about 3,000 people. As always, the group received a warm welcome from the people of San Angelo. The group also took part in a nightly historical pageant during the celebration.

Helen Vrla, Sr. Cousins Meet For First Time in Phillips For the first time in 75 years, five Wisconsin brothers and sisters met a first cousin from Texas.

Mrs. Helen Matous Vrla, Dallas, Texas, started writing to Mrs. Frances Dolezalek Hurban in Phillips in early 1987 after' finding she was related to her.

Mrs. Hurban's address was obtained from a cousin in Whitesboro, Texas, who, through conversation with Mrs. Vrla, mentioned she had visited long lost relatives in the Phillips area. Mrs. Hurban's father, William Dolezalek,

The first meeting of 1988 of Danbury Lodge 139 got underway on January 13 with President Vincent Hechler calling the meeting to order.

Secretary Tommie Lostak read the minutes of the previous meeting, as well as correspondence received since the December meeting. Financial Secretary Helen Filipp and Treasurer Lonnie Lostak each gave their reports.

Lonnie Lostak announced that the plaque, which will be engraved with the names of the Lodge 139 academic scholarship recipients, has been ordered. The name of Jarad Vrazel, who received the scholarship in 1987, will be the first to appear on the plaque. Jarad is attending the University of Texas at Austin.

It was announced that members Helen Filipp and Tommie Lostak were among the top SPJST Sales Representatives in 1987 and qualified for the trip to Las Vegas.

There being no other business, the meeting adjourned and was followed by a social.

Lodge No. 142 Houston Our monthly lodge meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 10, 1988 by President Dennis Hermis.

We had 25 members and 4 guests present, who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers by Secretary Alice Jochen revealed that all officers were present, except Guide Frank Turnis.

Then the secretary read the minutes from the previous meeting, which stood approved as read.

Under correspondence, the secretary read a letter from Supreme Lodge advising of the workshop at Academy, near Temple scheduled for Saturday, February 6, 1988, beginning at 10 a.m.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar sent a letter thanking our lodge for inviting him to our Christmas Party at Lodge No. 142.

A correction to our list of Board of Trustee members for year 1988.

Unintentionally, our new board member, Brother Martin Kieschnick, was omitted. Our Board of Trustees for 1988 are Chairman Robert Kieschnick, Vice Chairman Henry Hermis, Sr., Secretary Rosie Schilhab, Martin Kieschnick and Sidon Tumis.

Our bar manager for 1988 is Rosie Tumis and hall rental manager is Sidon Tumis.

Youth Club report was read by John Buri.

We welcomed our visitors at this meeting, namely, Mrs. Buri, Mrs. Joe Gambil, Frieda Kieschnick and Michael Schleider.

Meeting dates for 1988 are to be set in the February meeting. The next meeting will be February 14 at 2 p.m Capsule prize for $10 went unclaimed by the absence of Madilyn Jurek; next month, this prize goes to $20. The oldest member prize of $5 went to W.J. Schmidt.

Congratulations, he was 73 years young last June.

The meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m.

Our Christmas dinner party at Rosie's Tamale House No 2, 6406 No IH 35, Suite No. 1100 was well attended in spite of inclement weather.

We were especially happy to have Brother Ted and Sister Neldina Marek from San Marcos join us. Rosie Arriaga, owner, came from one of her other restaurants to greet us and passed around her delicious famous pecan pralines on a large platter to us for our dessert. We all thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon in a lovely environment.

Lodge

Lodge No. 177, Academy got off the new year with a good start; our meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Louis Driska. The pledge was recited and the lodge welcomed visitor Jim Weist. It was so good to have Mr. and Mrs. Jim Weist at our meeting and also Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Michalka. Welcome and come back, again. It's nice to see some new faces and the old faces were smiling as usual.

The minutes were read by Recording Secretary Sharon Hutka; good job, Sharon!

All chairpersons' reports were excellent. Academy really put our its best foot forward this year. After our many donations to worthy causes, we came out of 1987 very sound.

Seven new members were accepted those being William Childress, Carol J. Guesselbrecht, Ermalinda Guillen, Doris, Wayne and Michael Law, and Mike Sanders.

A get well card was sent to Juanita Reyna and a sympathy card to Harry and Jessie Barber.

Under correspondence was a thank you from Linda and Billy Atkins for our donation.

Trustees' Report -- new units and ducts have been installed; discussed replacing light covers, and drapes.

Youth Club will have a dance on February 12th.

Our books will be audited February 2nd; the Audit Committee consists of Dorothy Lisenbe, Larry Bland and Jesse Michalka.

A discussion was held on a member of our lodge who is in need of financial help and a committee was asked to look into her needs rather then set a dollar limit.

Greetings From Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities Dear Members: The regular membership meeting was held on Sunday, January 10 right after bingo. There was a short meeting with a pot luck supper afterwards and socializing; everyone had a good time. it was voted on to start having meetings in 1988 on the second Sunday of the month right after bingo, 5 o'clock for the meeting and socializing afterwards.

There were 5 young adults at this meeting; hope that this is a new trend and that more of the young members will attend meetings in the future.

Rudy Rejcek is trying to get a co - ed softball team for the spring league; he already has several members lined up so if any of you young adults, from 16 to young - at - heart who would like to sign up, please call Rudy at 261 - 9560.

The burglar alarm has been installed at the lodge and is working, also it is hoped that it will stop future burglaries at the hall.

Well, 1987 ended with a good note hoping that 1988 will be even a better one and the officers will be trying to get more members involved in lodge work in the future; they need our ideas, there will be more socials like the one at Christmas so keep reading the Vestnik for more information.

At this meeting, Kevin Roznos won the $40 door prize and Mark Doskocil lost $5 by not being there, so it still pays to come to meetings.

Patsy Rydel has been appointed youth leader and she has appealed to the membership to help her in any way that you can to get the youth involved in lodge activities.

Rudy Rejcek told the members that Willie Nelson visited with the Rejcek family at Christmastime; they were surprised and honored to have him come and sing songs with them for a couple of hours.

The officers and members were informed that there will be a workshop February 6 at Lodge 177, Academy, for all officers and interested persons who would like to know more about your lodge and how it works.

Parents spend the first part of a child's life urging them to walk and talk, and the rest of his childhood making them sit down and keep quiet.

A man dropped in to pay a friend an unexpected visit, and was amazed to find him playing chess with a dog. The man watched in silence for a few minutes, then burst out with, "That's the most incredible dog I ever saw in my life!" "Oh, he isn't so smart," was the answer. "I've beaten him three games out of four."

Club Of Lodge 88

Birthday

The Birthday Club met for their regular monthly meeting on January 13, 1988, in the lodge dining room with President Kathy Trefell presiding. She opened the meeting with a silent prayer for the Emily Bily family; also read a poem, "Which Are You?" Our devoted member, Emily Bily died January 5, 1988 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery in Houston on January 7th. After the funeral service, the family gathered at the hall for a hot

meal prepared by the Birthday Club members.

Secretary Rosalee Kostom read the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved as read.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave a good and encouraging report as of January 1, 1988. No recession!

Our President Kathy Trefell introduced a new game called "Calcutta," a personal game for the club members only. It turned out to be a real interesting game. Josephine Buri was the winner.

President Trefell introduced an idea about a "drawing and sale" in the future, and finally it was decided to have it on Czech Day in October.

There will be some more information later.

On February 14, Valentine's Day, we will have a very special anniversary celebration at Lodge 88 and we, as usual, -will have a pastry booth. It is hard to describe the beautiful pastry the Birthday Club Sisters bring and also many lodge members participate and, how we appreciate that, no one knows! Let's keep in mind it'll be a beautiful occasion, and many activities such as bingo from 2 to 4, and a free dance will follow.

We are sympathizing with Mike Trefell, who lost his brother, John O.Trefell on January 7th. He is the brother - in - law of our President Kathy Trefell.

Ima Lero's son, Fred, had heart surgery and is doing very well.

We are happy to report that Della Kadlecek, after a few days in the hospital, is doing fine and is at home recuperating.

Jeff Murray, who is Susan Schenburn's husband, was also in the hospital. We are looking forward to seeing everyone well, again.

Sister Kathy appointed a Rules and Regulations Committee; they are Lillie Spies, Rosalee Kostom, Pearl Hanka and Kathy Trefell.

We also had 3 lovely ladies to join us today they are Willie Mae Ermis (First Lady), Candy Cockrell and Lillie Johnson.

Our birthday honorees in January were Marie Pokluda, Margaret Bohac, Florena Taake and Ima Lero. "Happy Birthday" was sung and then, after grace, we adjourned for lunch.

This report is a bit late in telling you our December meeting and Christmas Party was a great success. You know how it is after the holidays sometimes.

There can be just so much work after as before the Christmas season.

Our many guests were Alvin Elsik, Bob Zvolanek, Jerry Kohn, Julius Podhrasky, Arnold Vrla, George Reznik, Roy Alholm, Gilbert Kalich, Joe Vlk, Charlie Kocian, Phil Reames, John Trojacek, Adolph Salac, Edmund Kaska, Sid Pokladnik, Eugene Parma, David Podhrasky, Angelo Athas, Bob Cunningham, Frank Houzvicka, Georgia Johnson, Olga Janicek, Billie Elie, Sidney Bridewell, Pat Ladd, Lil May, Florence Meyers, Agnes Jones, Ella Mae Faraizl and Amelia Strange. Two children in attendance were little Brian Johnson and Jessica.

A short business meeting was called to order by President Zvolanek.

Minutes of the November meeting were read and treasurer's report was

also given. Correspondence was then read.

Membership chairperson reported two more new members Agnes Jones and Ella Mae Faraizl. Welcome to our Circle!

Sunshine Report -- get well cards were mailed to Tom Roberts and Frank Houzvicka. Flowers were delivered to Mildred Patak, Lillian Moran and Mary Stransky.

Greetings were sent by Mildred Voss wishing us a happy holiday season.

Sisters who haven't been with us for a while were welcomed. They were Mary Kowal, Justine Pokladnik, Linda Kartous, Agnes Finch and Lydia Kartous.

Christmas cards were received from Millie Noska and Frances Konakovsky.

Thank you cards were received from Sister Mary Stransky, Lillian Moran and Mildred Patak. Frank Houzvicka thanked us for the get well card he received while he was in the hospital.

Thank you cards were also received from Ella Mae Faraizl, Albina Vrla and Mildred David for all the donations made in memory of their mother.

President Zvolanek thanked Julius Podhrasky, Bob Zvolanek and Arnold Vrla for setting up the tables. Bertha Podhrasky and Anne Zvolanek furnished decorations for the tables.

Zdenka Skotak, as always, delighted us with her delicious rum balls. Esther Cunningham passed out date calendars to all of us and President Zvolanek expressed her thanks for her thoughtfulness.

There were no hostesses this month since our dinner was catered by Bessie Petr.

Donations were as follows: In memory of her husband John - from Mary Kubacak. In memory of her husband from Josephine Kankrlik. In memory of her husband Thomas from Rose Kopecek. In memory of Angeline Ozymy from Arnold and Helen Vrla and ,Gilbert and Bessie Kalich.

Our Circle made donations to Genesis Women's Shelter, American Red Cross, Ronald McDonald House, American Auxiliary Christmas Shop at the Veterans Hospital in Dallas, National Council of Women of Free Czechoslovakia, and to the Sokol Zizka for our Christmas Party.

"Happy Birthday" was sung for our December celebrants and also Christmas carols, both in the English and Czech languages which were enjoyed by all. Sisters Reznik and Frances Jurcik led us in singing.

A very entertaining game was played with Liddie Pavelka directing us how to play. Everyone ended up with a nice -gift.

It has been a while since we have been together, so please do try to attend our first meeting of this new year on February 4th. Perhaps the Ground Hog will miss seeing his shadow and good weather will be in store.

Ennis Sewing Circle Old Man Winter paid us a short visit a few weeks ago. I am sure that most of us were more than happy when he left. A cold spell is on the way. At least there won't be ice and that is good news.

In order to condense this letter, I will not report by the month but will combine the three months' reports as a unit.

All our meetings were well attended.

Sisters welcomed back after a few months' abserxe were Lillie Hejny, Annie Kostak, Ella Mae Zmolek, Mary Kopecek, Anne Zabojnik and Sylvia Laznovsky.

Our guests were little Sally James, Milan Dujka, Leslie Vrla, Olga Kucera, Carol Kopecek, Bob Zvolanek, Wesley Tupy, Joe Houdek, Ernest Huff, Frank Holley, Frank Hejny, Bill Foit and Julius Podhrasky.

A moment of silence was observed in October in memory of Sister Verlie Lipscomb.

Thank you notes were read from the Lipscomb family for flowers for Sister Lipscomb, Annie and Bob Zvolanek for the card and money gift for their 50 - year anniversary, Mr. Kelly, Ellis County Foster Parent Association. We voted to invite Ann Jennings from the Human Research. Child Abuse and Foster Parent Association to come to one of our meetings to speak to us about child abuse.

Sister Podhrasky announced the Dallas Sokol 75th anniversary celebration on November 1, 1987.

Dallas Sokol anniversary pins were for sale, also the 1986 Sesquicentennial souvenir books were for sale for $1.

We voted to purchase a one - fourth page ad in the Dallas Sokol souvenir program book.

Quilt was quilted for Sister Anne Zvolanek. Sister Zvolanek purchased a ticket for the drawing for each of the quilters. There was no quilting in November and December.

Sister Mary Bouska had surgery and spent a few weeks in the Baylor Rehabilitation Center in Dallas. She is in the Ennis Care Center. Sisters Annie Vrana and Libbie Wisniewski had eye surgery. Each one is wished a speedy recovery. Sister Albina Nesuda was also ill. Money gift was sent to Sisters Bouska and Nesuda.

Donations received -- Sister Zvolanek for quilt quilted, Mary Polasek and Liddie Pavelka for material and pot plant. Money was given to the Circle. Sister Mary Kopecek donated a quilt top for the Circle to use as we desire.

A Nominating Committee was selected. They were Rose Bednar, Stacie Hejny and Georgia Morales.

The committee presented the slate of officers for 1988. The officers were elected by acclamation. The officers for 1988 are as follows: President Sadie Kubin, Vice President - Georgia Zabojnik, Secretary - Georgia Tupy, Treasurer - Mildred Trojacek. Sister Stacie Hejny will be the Sunshine person and Sister Alice Roberts will continue to be the Reporter.

Sister Libbie Wisniewski guessed the number of candy corns in a jar. She won a prize furnished by Sister Roberts.

The Circle furnished chicken for the Thanksgiving dinner. Sisters brought the rest, which there was plenty of. I always like to brag on the good cooks.

Sisters who brought door prizes for the 3 - month period were Georgia Morales (3), Annie Novak, Albina Nesuda, Liddie Pavelka, Frances Vita and Vojteska Janicek.

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, January 27, 1988 Tickets were sold for the quilt drawing in November. Sister Mildred Trojacek was the lucky winner. The quilt was pieced by Sister Olga Ewing and quilted by the sisters of the Circle.

Sisters Zvolanek and Wisniewski brought flowers for table decorations.

Carol Kopecek brought cookies for each table.

"Happy Birthday" was sung each month to the sisters with birthdays.

We voted to raise our yearly membership dues to $1.50.

The delicious Christmas luncheon was enjoyed by all. After the luncheon we had fun exchanging gifts. The officers and non - elected chairpersons were given a Christmas gift.

We had no meeting in January. Our next meeting will be held on February 11th.

Bulletin Some youngsters are very unkept when they first come to Covenant House in Houston. It appears that maybe they have never washed their faces, had a haircut or had ever even combed their hair -- clothes are dirty and ragged and shoes are completely worn out from roaming the streets and, of course, they are hungry, tired and sleepy.

Even some of these youngsters, almost babes themselves, are caring for a baby, usually conceived out of wedlock. Many times it has been learned that these young girls are mistreated at home through abuse and are forced to leave home. Having no place to go except to the street with no roof over their head nor any food to eat, they immediately become victims of prey for those unscrupulous individuals who are so willing to take them in but only for such a high price -- the use of this young innoncent child's body for prostitution.

Isn't this a terrible and exorbitant price to pay for room and board?

Is it any wonder that some of these young girls have another mouth to feed?

The same happens to so many young boys who likewise have been mistreated.

Could we here at Lodge Pokrok No. 88 say "NO" to any one of these youngsters?

You bet we can't and will not say "NO." All clothing, shoes and other articles of wear which you have so generously donated have been delivered to Covenant House Houston and we at Lodge No. 88 should be proud.

Covenant House Houston takes in youngsters ages from babes in arms through age 20 years so it's easy to understand that all sizes of clothing and shoes are needed.

Those who might not yet have availed themselves of this opportunity to assist someone who is so desperately in need certainly are encouraged to take a look in your clothes closet and bring those discards, no matter how small or large in size to the lodge.

Department

The first Czech to earn fame in this New World was Augustin Herman, the son of a Protestant minister. He came to America as a young man employed by merchants in New Amsterdam. He spent his life in America, and was one of the first founders of the Virginia tobacco trade.

History remembers Augustin Herman primarily because of a map he made. He learned surveying and, in 1660, he made the first map of Maryland, including Chesapeake Bay. You all remember from geography that Chesapeake Bay is simply one river and one channel and one bay after another, and making a map of that area was a great achievement. As a matter of fact, Lord Baltimore, who then owned Maryland, gave Herman a

land grant of 20,000 acres in Maryland for his service in making the map.

Herman intended to start a colony of Czech immigrants and build Bohemian Manor and named a river the Bohemian River, but his dream of a Czech or Bohemian state never materialized.

Herman's original map of Maryland is now in the British Museum. When you consider that surveying instruments of that time were crude, his achievement is all the more notable. It is said that when Sir Isaac Newton visited America with more sophisticated instruments which took into account the curvature of the earth he verified as completely accurate the lines established by this Czech immigrant many years before. * **

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood The Cottonwood Youth Club was organized in 1959. The youth club meets the first Sunday of each month at the mother lodge.

Willie Mae Schuetz has been the youth leader for the past 16 years. She has two daughters and two grandsons.

Her interests are flowers, plants, baking, crafts, sports and cooking.

Willie Mae says, "I like to work with the youth and be kind to them and help them if I can."

The date for our Valentine Skating Party has been set for February 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. and will be held at Skate Haven on North 31st Street just north of Temple High School. All you clubs are encouraged to attend; this is our first district activity for 1988 and we do want to start 1988 with a large group and a lot of enthusiasm, so plan to come and meet with your SPJST friends.

Door prizes will again be awarded and you will be allowed to bring a friend. Please ask your friend to join your youth club and let them enjoy all of the activities planned for you in 1988.

Head Of Youth Department Lodge No. 17, New Tabor Youth Club We had our meeting on January 4, at 3 p.m.

We discussed having a Valentine's Party on Friday, February 5 at 7 p.m.

A stew lunch on Saturday, February 20 followed by a cake auction by the youth club was also discussed.

After the meeting each of us did a pin - punch out picture on foil and glued to a frame; it made a pretty picture. One of our members, Tommy and I had a Birthday Party with cake and punch.

The next meeting will be February 7.

Dear Members, As you all' know, December was a very busy month for all of us.

We had our Lodge 66 Christmas Party on December 5th. The youth had a good program and it was an honor to have ex - youth club members to come forward and make our choir. It was nice to have District III Youth Leader Bessie Petr and her husband Emil at our party. We also had District III Director Sid Pokladnik and his wife, Justine.

We sold tickets on a homemade quilt donated by Elnor Leslie. Louis Veselka won the quilt.

The District III youth went to Holiday - in - the - Park and also had a lock - in at Lodge No. 84 on December 18th and 19th. We enjoyed the park very much. Our stay at Lodge No. 84 was fun and we had a great time.

Bessie Petr, we want to thank you for the good food and the fun we had.

Anyone who saw our Youth Leader Gladys Yates, the week after our trip would wonder if she had a good time. I had to look at her for a week because she looked terrible.

The youth had their meeting on December 21st. There were 13 members, 7 adults and 1 visitor, Michael Wright. We had our Youth Christmas Party after the meeting. We exchanged gifts through the game of cops - and - robbers. We also played bingo and enjoyed it very much. I would like to take this time to thank Ira Niswanger for opening the lodge for our party and all of our activities this past year.

Our youth club made donations this month to charities in Waco. We gave to Caritas, Salvation Army, Meals - on - Wheels, Toys for Tots, and the Family Abuse Center.

Dear Members, The youth club met on November 11, 1987. There were 15 members and 5 adults present.

We brought canned goods to make a food basket. This basket was given to

Lodge 6 youth group with baskets for local rest home.

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood YC Meeting Dear Readers, Our club had planned to go bowling on Sunday, January 24, 1988 at the TSTI Campus. We had an appreciation dinner for our people who worked at our booth during

Westfest and for the picnic. Our youth club had bingo.

We had snacks last Friday, January 15 for a birthday. We are making Valentine cards for the rest home.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 7 and we hope to see everyone there.

Services were held Wednesday, November 25th at 1 p.m. in McDade Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmie Cottle officiating. Burial took place at McDade Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Leslie B. Dungan; two nephews, Walter Mills of Elgin and J. Leroy Creel of Austin; one niece, Velma Hoerman of McDade and five great nieces and nephews.

Sister Glena was an RVOS member and an SPJST Lodge 66 member since May, 1954. She was a hard worker and faithful member for these many years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Giddings. Sister Dungan was a former school teacher and always supported the youth of our lodge in all their projects.

OLIVIA ALBINA FABIAN, of Hallettsville, Texas, who died in her home on Monday, December 21, 1987 after a lengthy illness.

Sister Fabian was born on June 7, 1909 in Lavaca County, Texas, to the late Martin and Anna (Kopecky) Trlica. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and SPJST. "Miss 011ie," as she was affectionally known to her many friends, spent a long life of service to her husband, Joe T. Fabian, to her relatives and to her friends. When she worked at "Elkins" in the mid 1930s, she was the lady to whom school students went to purchase their school supplies, because she always knew their needs, and allayed their anxieties with a warm smile and kind word. This understanding nature remained with her in later years when she worked as a bank teller, and then on into retirement.

She is survived by her husband, Joe T. Fabian; two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Dusek and Mrs. Louise Matejek, all of Hallettsville.

Her parents, eleven sisters and four brothers preceded her in death.

Funeral services were conducted on December 24 by Rev. Herb Beyer in St.

Born June 4, 1899, in Smithville, Texas, she was a housewife and member of West Brethren Church and Christian Sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Will Beseda, in March 1970.

Survivors include one son, Willie H. Beseda of Waco; one sister, Albina Greene of Del Rio; one sister - in - law, Anna Urbish of Waco; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, December 20, at West Brethren Church with Rev. Henry Beseda and Rev. Lawrence Junek officiating. Burial was at Presbyterian Cemetery near Penelope, Texas.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SP JST Lodge No. 87, Temple, on behalf of the officers and entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of CHARLES L. WALKER, JR., who passed away December 22, 1987, in his daughter's home in Salado, at the age of 78 years.

Mr. Walker was a lifelong Temple resident who attended Temple public schools and was a graduate of Temple High School. He also attended Temple Junior College, Texas A&M University, and the University of Texas.

He retired from Anderson Clayton Cotton Company in 1974 after 42 years of service.

He was elected to his first two - year term on the Temple City Commission in 1948, he served as mayor from 1950 to 1952, returned to city government in 1969 where he was appointed to the Temple Planning Commission, serving until 1972. After retiring in 1974, Walker served in the District I City Commission slot until 1984. He again served on the Planning Commission from April 1984 to May 1987. Mr. Walker spent a total of over 20 years in various posts in Temple city government.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hadene Madeley Walker in 1981.

Services were conducted Wednesday at Harper - Talasek Funeral Chapel in Temple, with burial at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Survivors are one son, Charles Lee Walker III of Waco, Texas; two daughters, Nancy Glasscock of Salado and Elizabeth Walker of Houston and seven grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy were to be directed to the Greater Temple Humane Society and King's Daughters Hospital.

Mr. Walker was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple.

He was born on February 21, 1908 to Ignatius and Anna (Kubes) Marik.

Funeral Mass for Mr. Marik was held on January 4 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard, with Rev. Joe Vrana (celebrant); con celebrants were Msgr. John Kukral of East Bernard, Msgr. Neal Antle and Rev. Frank Monaghan of Houston, Msgr. Sylvester Fuchs of Bellville and Rev. Henry C. Rachunek of Hungerford, who delivered the sermon.

Wake services were held Sunday, January 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Davis Dawson Chapel with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Edward Vacek led the rosary and Marshal Marik delivered the eulogy. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, East Bernard.

His business career was spent as an oil lease broker. He was a member of the Houston Petroleum Landmen's Organization, and Texas Independent

Royalty Owners Association. He maintained an office in the Esperson Building in Houston with his associates Walter Belt of Wallis and his brother, C.J. Marik.

He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion Post No. 226, the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, Austin County Game and Fish Protection Association, and Ducks Unlimited. He was named to Who's Who in the Southern and Southwestern States. He sponsored the "Double A" Baseball Team of East Bernard. He opened his ranch to Boys Scouts, altar boys and other groups, and was also involved in wildlife conservation. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2500. KJT, and SPJST Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard.

Preceding him in death were his sister, Mrs. Clement (Annie) Vecera in 1934 and four brothers, Frank in 1900, Joseph in 1969, John I. in 1975 and Ignac, Jr. in 1987.

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. James (Mary) Borak of El Campo; three brothers, L.J. Marik and Edmund Marik, both of East Bernard and Charles J. Marik of Bellville; fifty nieces, nephews and numerous friends.

Pallbearers were Mr. Marik's nephews, Simon Borak, Bennie Marik, Ernest Marik, Gene Marik, Jimmy Marik, Victor Marik, William Marik and Adolf Vecera.

Debbie Guthman was organist and singers were Margie Vacek, Birdie Jo Hlavinka, Edward and Evelyn Vacek, Martha Victorin, Margie Hlavinka and Yvonne Krenek, the Mariachi Nortena who play regularly at St. Joseph's Church in Houston also provided music.

American Legion Post No. 226 of East Bernard presented military honors during the ceremony, following farewell remarks were made by his nephew, James O'Hare.

Funeral arrangements were by Davis - Dawson Funeral Home in East Bernard.

The family expresses gratitude for all kindnesses.
