Tuesday, January 12 your editor attended the first Supreme Lodge meeting of 1988. During the time, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and Vice President Bernard Gebala made their reports which included what had happened since the last SL Board meeting and, mainly of interest, plans for the future happenings in our fraternal Society.

Brother Leshikar brought up several subjects which are of much interest to many members of our Order in a number of lodges and one of those is the Domino and Taroky Tournaments.

When these tournaments were first announced, some members (including yours truly) had some reservations about how successful and interesting they would be; however, these certainly have become very attractive to many lodge members in several localities in our state of Texas. He and his committee discussed other contests in future plans, including volleyball, quilting and cake baking; however, these are plans and you will be hearing more about these activities as plans are formulated and finalized and more details will be published in the. Vestnik at those times.

SL Secretary/Leonard Mikeska will have any pertinent facts in his Excerpts from the minutes.

Brother Leshikar also brought up for discussion plans that he and VP Gebala had discussed concerning records on genealogy of Czech families in our SPJST and in Texas. That, too, will be brought to the attention of our members and readers when plans are finalized. Your editor feels this is a very worthy effort in which our Society can play a very important part and hopes Brother Leshikar has good luck in cooperation on this project.

VP Gebala, in his report, brought to the Board's attention certain insurance details he plans to discuss with members of the Insurance Committee with future welfare of our Society.

With the XXVth SPJST Convention coming in June, there are a number of important considerations the Supreme Lodge has to give attention to and that includes our districts and lodges. Four districts have announced the dates and places of their Spring meetings and the other three districts soon will, we hope. The local lodges are urged to start compiling their lodge history, especially the last four years--send them in as soon as you can to: Vestnik Editor, PO Box 85, West, Texas 76691. *** Women make up more than half of the work force but own only a quarter of the nation's businesses. To help female entrepreneurs garner a larger share of the market, the Commerce Department has just published the "Directory of Women Business Owners; MegaMarketplace East/West." The 264 - page volume is designed to help businesswomen locate new markets and suppliers. It includes an alphabetical listing of 2,000 female - owned businesses that paid $50 to be included. The businesses range from accountants to woodworking suppliers -- plus telephone numbers, contact names and a brief description of

Following is a letter from our member in Mississippi which yours truly feels will be of interest to our readers, and should be, especially our younger members. Brother Parencia first wrote some years ago and we were glad to help in any way we could. He is to be complimented for his efforts and wish him continued success. *** P.O. Box 915 Leland, Mississippi 38756 January 11, 1988 Dear Mr. Sefcik: I am pleased that you are starting a new series of Czech lessons in the January 6, 1988 issue of Vestnik. The lessons you published in 1986 and 1987 have been a big help in my effort to re learn the Czech language. I have made progress in improving my reading ability and vocabulary.

It is unfortunate that I have no one to speak with; Czechs are rare in Mississippi. I spent the Christmas holidays visiting relatives in the upper Gulf Coast area of Texas. The relatives know my interest in re - learning Czech so we had discussions of certain terms used when we were children. In fact, I advised one of the cousins, where she might purchase a Czech - English dictionary (slovnik). Sometimes I realize that I am thinking in the Czech language which indicates the progress I have made on the project.

I enjoy the Vestnik and am pleased that I re - discovered it after being an SPJST member for more than fifty years.

Thanks again for all the help you and the publication has given me in re learning the language.

Some years ago in northern, India, Sir John Marshall, head of the archeological service of the government of India, discovered two abandoned cities; one at a site now called Mohenjo - Daro, the other at Harappa. These cities are believed to have thrived about 3,500 B.C. and were in close contact with the earliest civilizations of Babylonia. Among the objects found in the former city was a seal, used to sign documents, showing a procession of seven men carrying square standards, held aloft on poles like modern flags. These ancient "flags" were not made of cloth but were rigid solids, like boards.

Far back in American history, the Vikings carried a flag which bore a black raven on a field of white.

Then in 1492, Columbus sailed to our shores, and his three small ships displayed the Spanish flag bearing two red lions on two white fields and two yellow castles on two red fields.

It is most natural that America should have had its colonial flags as soon as the first colonists settled. And it is not surprising that those flags should have been created in a wide variety.

Box 901 El Campo, Texas 77437 Some of the SPJST original chartered 25 lodge halls that are in operation today are in dire need of repair. The original lodges of District VI: Lodges 4, 8 and 10 have no hall buildings. Lodges 16, 19 and 23 have hall buildings. I also know of halls in other districts which need repair. I am only referring to original SPJST lodges that have halls which we need to keep and save for the Society. Some of these lodges do not have funds for the upkeep of the halls. I suggest we help these lodggs on .a one - time basis to upgrade the buildings for our Society.

The cost would need to, be determined on each lodge building for upgrading.

We helped to save the Statue of Liberty, we can save our original SPJST lodge hall buildings.

SPJST Lodge No. 133 San Antonio Mr. Donnie Victorick Chairman of the Bylaw Committee P.O. Box 85 Snook, Texas 77878 Lodge No. 133 San Antonio, Texas wishes to submit the following recommendations to the Bylaw Committee for consideration by the delegates of the XXV SPJST Convention.

1. That all SPJST CONVENTIONS are adjourned with the singing of our National Anthem "THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER." And that the Star Spangled Banner should not be substituted by any other song.

2. That the SPJST sponsor an annual SPJST Festival in Temple, Texas. It is a proven fact that such celebrations do attract the news media throughout the State of Texas. The festival would be under the jurisdiction and responsibility of the Home Office. The SPJST lodges throughout the state would be asked to help in any way that they could. It is recommended that we try this for two years, and if it proves successful, to have this every year. We would concentrate heavily on the news media coverage, on the local level and state level. The purpose of such a celebration (SPJST FESTIVAL) would give our Organization an opportunity to be better known throughout the State of Texas. The proceeds could be divided; one - half to go to the SPJST School Scholarship, and the other half to the CHILD ABUSE PROGRAM. Two programs that are well = worthy of our time. There are' Other fraternal organizations that have something going for them, such as the Sons of Hermann Fraternal, (the annual OCTOBER FEST), also the Polish National Alliance, they have their annual celebration.

Although the proceeds would go to two well - worthy projects, the SPJST would gain very much by being better known throughout the state, and by being better known and the type of insurance that we have to offer, would give us a lot of new members.

Article 3 [f]: Elect members of the Supreme Lodge, Editor of the Vestnik, all required committees, and determine their salaries as well as compensation for all delegates, convention officers, committee members, and convention expense borne by the Society. Article 94: The contents of the "Vestnik" are managed by the editor, elected by the convention, who must be an SPJST member, possess journalistic qualifications, have knowledge of the Czech and English languages, be able to produce a Czech and English Section in the Vestnik and have a general education.

(Lodge 133 San Antonio opposes any changes in this article; due to the fact that we do not want to have an editor who is controlled by any one group, but is free to follow the order of the Bylaws set up by the delegates to a General Convention.)

Article 94 [a]: The Editor must occupy an office at the SPJST Supreme Lodge effective January 1, 1988. (SPJST Lodge 133 feels that many of the Home Office functions are not properly reported, such as dignitary visits, etc. by the absence of the editor at the Home Office.)

Lodge No. 18, Elgin Elgin Lodge 18 held its regular monthly meeting on December 15, 1987.

President Dale Kessel opened the meeting followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers showed Treasurer Alice Kovar and Financial Secretary Lambert Peterson to be excused.

President Kessel welcomed our visitors, District II Director Willie E. Kohutek and wife, Adeline. It is always a pleasure to have them in our midst.

Secretary Gilbert Kubicek read the minutes from the November meeting.

They were approved as read.

Next on the agenda were reports from all other officers and committee chairpersons. All reports were very favorable.

Since there was no old business to discuss, the installation of officers followed.

The first meeting of the new year was held January 5, 1988 at 7:30 p.m.

Vice President LaVerne Cabla called the meeting to order. After the Pledge of Allegiance, we had a moment of silence in memory of our lodge brother, Raymond Gerik, who died December 4th. Lodge 24 extends its sympathy to Raymond's family.

Many thanks to President Leshikar for being with us at our meeting.

Our New Year's Eve dance was a success. There were many comments made by our members at the meeting as to what an enjoyable evening everyone had at the dance. Thank you to all who worked so hard for the evening to be a special one. Special thanks go to Arleen Tschoerner, Laverne Cabla, Lina Smetanka, Wilbert and Margaret Mikeska for cooking the blackeyed peas; also, thank you to LaVerne, Arleen, Margaret and Linda for decorating the hall. Your hard work was appreciated by all who attended the dance.

New members who were voted on and accepted into our lodge are Richard Green, Ashley Coots, Leona Schiller, Jackie Volek, Jason Volek, Jay Volek, Sharon Hejl, Rueben Marek and Kenneth Martinec.

Welcome to Lodge 24. We hope to see you soon at our lodge functions.

Approximately 115 members attended our Christmas Party. There was plenty of good food, good eggnog, an entertaining program by the youth club, and even Santa paid us a visit.

Thank you to all who participated.

There are several domino tournaments upcoming in the near future. We will be having playoffs for straight dominoes during the month of February. Anyone who is interested in competing in the playoffs, please contact LaVerne Cabla at 985 - 2354.

A date and time will be set up later.

President Cabla appointed the Audit Committee. Committee members are Linda Smetanka, Pauline Marek and Nancy Posar. All books will be audited next month before/after our regular lodge meeting.

Youth Leader Rose Harvell gave us a report on the youth club. Please note: Youth Club meetings have been changed to the second Sunday afternoon of the month at 2 p.m. This was done due to conflicting school and sport schedules.

January birthdays include Joe Haisler - January 20th and Shirley Waits - January 22nd.

Special committees have been set up to take care of various duties around the lodge during the year. Lodge No. 35, Elk Dear Readers: Our January 10th meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz, with all officers present.

The Pledge of Allegiance to our flag was led by youth members, Jana Breitkreutz and Jesika Tierce.

The membership stood and paused in a moment of silence in memory of our departed Sister Mary Kubitza; may she rest in peace.

As our guest we had Nicky Davis; we hope she visits us, again.

Secretary Rosemary Banik read a note of thanks from the Mary Kubitza family and a letter from the Supreme Lodge concerning refunds and that a workshop for all lodges to be held February 6th at Academy.

In her youth report, Sister Louise Burney, thanked all for their support with the youth's Christmas project.

She stated that all the youth are urged to bring their Valentine cards, their "decorated" Valentine cookies and boxes to the February meeting; prizes will be awarded. They also are to have a cakewalk on February 6th.

Under new business the following committees were appointed: Sunshine -- Ruby Pavelka, Velma Clemons, Dorothy Banik Resolution -- Elizabeth Kubitza, Albert Banik, Rosemary Banik Special Entertainment -- Barbara Pavelka, Dorothy Banik Grievance -- Ernest Banik, Joe Tepe, Fred Kubitza, Albert Banik, Vernon Wood "Happy Birthday" was sung to those having birthdays in January.

On the ill list is Theodore Bordovsky who is recovering from a heart attack.

We certainly wish him a good and speedy recovery; also to Marvin Camp, our thoughts are of you, and our hope is that you are feeling much better.

Lodge No. 39, Bryan Dear Members of SPJST Lodge 39: We held our monthly meeting yesterday, January 10, 1988. We had a lengthy meeting and we resolved many important issues. I will brief you of the most important results. All of these proceedings were by motions made, seconded and passed by a majority votes of members present.

Our officers for 1988 were elected in our November meeting. They are: President -- Alnor Kuder Vice President -- Thressa Wolf Secretary -- Lillie Matejka Treasurer -- Eline Kuder Youth Leader -- Linda Faust Delegates elected to represent our lodge are Linda Faust and Renea Macik. Alternates are Michael Faust and Milton Koehler. We decided to

wait until the February meeting to elect three more trustees to add to the four officers. This will form our seven Board of Trustees.

All had a considerable and important discussion on the acceptance of the local lodge Rules and Regulations that were presented to lodge members in our December meeting. Everyone present gave the indication that the R&Rs had been thoroughly read and studied. We voted to add a couple of articles and a few minor changes were made. Motion was made and seconded and carried to accept the R&Rs after all the deliberation. These R&Rs will precede all other action that has been taken before the 1988 January meeting.

These R&Rs do not conflict in any way with our SPJST Convention Bylaws.

They are merely additional rules to the ones that are not covered in the SPJST Bylaws. After they are reprinted and mailed to us, they are available to all of our members and will be mailed to you, if you supply a self - addressed, stamped envelope. They will be available in all monthly meetings. All members present felt that these R&Rs will be beneficial to our lodge and help solve many problems that we have had. I want to thank Renea Macek, the chairperson of the R&Rs Committee.

She spent much time and energy in handling the consolidation of these rules. Also thanks go to our Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and Andy Vavra, our District 1 director, for all their help and time. We plan to appoint and elect committees as needed during the year of 1988.

We changed our meetings' dates to the first Sunday of each month. This was carried by majority vote. Please keep in mind, our meetings will be held the first Sunday of each month at 2 p.m.

All authorized Alnor Kuder, our president, to handle all of our plumbing problems.

Also authorized Rudolph Matejka to replace all non - working faucets.

Aline Kuder, our treasurer, was authorized to handle new covers for our air conditioning controls.

The book auditors gave their report.

Aline Kuder explained to us how the utility demand works.

Our banking problems were discussed and a motion made, seconded and carried, to place our checking account in another bank; preferably to the same bank as treasurer's personal banking in order to make her job a little lighter.

According to our new R&Rs, all checks must be co - signed by our president.

Christmas Party report was given by Lillie Matejka and money left over was given to the treasurer.

Rentals to public and members were discussed, but tabled until a later meeting. Alnor Kuder is our rental chairperson, please call her at 822 6381 if you have any questions on renting our hall for any function.

I'm sure that everyone present will say that we had an orderly, very cooperative meeting, very pleasant and friendly, and it was a joy to be there.

We accomplished a great deal, tabled a few subjects, and we're looking toward a good year. We're striving to build a good solid foundation for the youth group, so we need to start with setting good examples.

I will be looking forward to our next meeting, and keep you informed of business at hand.

Attention Lodge No., 39 Members In order to keep your membership in good standing, please be advised: According to our new Rules and Regulations, all local social dues will be collected in January of each year.

Since 1988 is the first year under this change and because of direct billing from the Home Office, we agreed to give our members until our March meeting to pay their dues. This is for 1988 only. Lodge No. 47, Seaton Installation Dear Brothers and Sisters: The January 3rd lodge meeting was called to order by lodge President Brother Jerry Pechal. Flag Bearers Tommy Gibson and Amy Kohutek brought in the flags and led in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was held for all of the members who passed away in 1987. May they rest in peace.

Brother Willie E. Kohutek, District 1I director, administered the oath of installation for the officers for 1988.

He spoke briefly before the installation about the forthcoming Board meeting of the Supreme Lodge, the rebate to the lodges and for all delegates to be studying the bylaws and the changes that will be voted on in the June convention. He commented on Brother Emil J. Hejl being a sales representative for 49 years for Lodge No. 47. Congratulations, Brother Hejl! President Pechal thanked Brother Willie for being the installing officer.

Visitors recognized were Ann Balusek, Gertrude Kahlig, Freddie Schroeder, Carole Pechal and Willie Hegar. Be making plans to be present at all of our meetings.

Sister Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, sales representatives and trustees. She read the minutes of the December 6th lodge meeting and they were approved as read. Correspondence included a thank you card from the family of Brother Werner A. Dornhoefer for the wreath of flowers sent to their beloved one's funeral service, a thank you from Sister Annie Chupik for the get well card sent her while she was hospitalized in Baylor University Hospital in Dallas for a broken hip, an invitation to host either the Domino or Tarok Tournament from SL President Howard Leshikar, a letter regarding a workshop at Lodge No. 177 on February 6th, East Bell Water Supply is having an annual meeting on January 12th and the U.S. Census

questionnaire. We voted to host the Tarok Tournament on March 5th.

We accepted Kenneth Taylor Watson and Christopher M. Watson as new members. Welcome to the lodge!

The only one member we knew of being hospitalized during December was Brother Hulon Ross, Sr. He will have open heart surgery this coming week. Get well, soon, Brother Hulon!

We adjourned the meeting and enjoyed the leftover turkey and dressing that was heated and it was delicious. It was better than on December 13th; thanks to the Kohuteks and their helpers. Eighty one members and five visitors enjoyed the meeting and meal.

The next meeting will be Sunday, February 7 at 2 p.m.

This award is presented each year to a very deserving couple who has devoted a lot of hard work and time to keep the lodge operating smoothly. They serve as bar chairpersons and help at other times when needed. Brother Henry does a lot of repairing of things needing fixing and they are always present when the doors open at Seaton Star Hall. Congratulations to Henry and Helen! Thanks for a job well done.

Year's Eve dance and had brought the food for the party or the meeting. He especially thanked Brother Willie and Sister Adeline Kohutek for coordinating the Christmas supper. He also thanked the board for giving him a beautiful plaque at the party.

Congratulations to Brother Henry and Sister Helen Janacek for being voted to receive the "Brother and Sister Award" for 1987. He also thanked everyone for working the entire year in whatever capacity, helping someone or

being a chairperson; it always makes the job easier when there are plenty of volunteers to help. Thanks, again.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of our last meeting. Thank you note from the SPJST District V youth was read. A letter from Lydia Sabrsula was read and enjoyed by all.

We hope both of you will find time to come and have dinner and meeting with us next month. A thank you from the Richmond State School was also read. A letter from the district director of the Muscular Destrophy was read, discussed and accepted.

Mary Werner gave the financial report.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall gave her report.

Special Fund report was given by Brother Gilbert Walzel.

All reports were approved as read.

Brother Gilbert Walzel also gave a report on the costly repairs on our air conditioners.

Jerry Prochazka, our District V director, explained our premium refund. He also suggested we read about Brother Otto Hanus, the late and past curator of our SPJST Museum in Temple, Texas in the "Ceskoslovensk)"7 Svet" magazine published in Prague.

My husband, Herbert, and I visited the museum and donated an antique article. We marveled at all the antiques that are arranged so beautifully. We, of the SPJST, are proud of all Brother Otto Hanus accomplished for people to see and enjoy. He left a legacy of life for the museum and antiques donated by all the kind people. It is certainly worth a visit to the museum.

Our annual chili supper was discussed and decided we would not have it this year.

Brother Louis Hanus drew the door prize winners. They were Winnefred Susan and Victor Werner.

Our next meeting will be February 14 with a dinner at 12:15 p.m.; roast and sausage will be supplied by the lodge and, ladies, please bring your favorite vegetables and pastry. The meeting will convene at 1:15 p.m.

We adjourned for a social hour for a snack to eat and coffee and tea to drink before parting for home.

Lodge No. 7, Temple Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple held their Christmas meeting Friday evening, December 11th with President Ladis Navratil presiding.

A motion was made and seconded to dispense with the business meeting.

Lad Zatopek led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance; members remained standing in silent tribute to deceased members.

Jerry Valchar gave the invocation prayer before the evening meal was served to members and guests.

Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir installed the following officers for the calendar year 1988: President Ladis Navratil, Vice President Jerry Valchar, Recording Secretary Dorothy Chervenka, Financial Secretary Mary Ann Zatopek, Flag Bearer Ladis Zatopek and Parliamentarian Sidney Kacir.

Honored guests were Supreme Lodge President Howard Lesihkar, his wife, Mary and son, Cody; and his guest, Kyle Kovacevich; also Sidney Kacir, his wife, Dorothy and son, Daniel.

Special guests were Mary Ann Marek, Mr. and Mrs. James Edds, Wilma Mach alek and Millie Schiller.

Door prizes were presented to members and guests.

Georgia Navratil and Dorothy Chervenka led the sing - a - long of Christmas carols.

Party favors were presented by Mary Zatopek and Florence Reisner.

President Navratil thanked all who took part in preparing for the Christmas meeting.

Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters: I must comment about our Youth Christmas Program on December 14, 1987, which was very interesting, especially when you sit back and observe all those little boys and girls, and how enthused they are. The Lodge 88 Choral Group was joined by the youth in singing all the Christmas carols and, like Tim said, he hopes when they become adults they'll join the Senior Group. The youth put on a real good play just before Santa arrived.

Rudy and Celestine Darilek family was well represented at the Christmas Program. They have 8 children, a number of grandchildren and 27 great - grandchildren with 19 present that night, which kept even the grandparents busy, but it's an asset to our Society -- such a beautiful family!

In keeping with the family tradition, Tim and Rosalee Kostom, together with Naomi Spencer, spent their Christmas weekend with Frank and Ruth Kurz of Oklahoma City. Ruth is Tim and Naomi's sister. Years ago the family, headed by their mother, usually arranged to get together for Christmas at some location agreed upon by all since it was not always

possible for some of the family members to meet in Houston. For instance, one year the meeting was held in El Paso, another year in Cloud Croft, New Mexico, then again in ..

Ruidoso, New Mexico, and then in Alpine or Fort Stockton. But this time the gathering took place in Tyler, Texas. the spirit of the Naturally, Christmas Season blossoms in a family group, and meeting was thoroughly enjoyed. We found the city of Tyler, much to our surprise, quite a large city -- about 78,000 population. Aside from this, it is known as the Rose Capital of Texas. This is widely recognized and the fact is the pride of the city.

Shortly after arrival, the group spent the rest of the day reviewing old times, going through photos and manuscripts gathered by the family which Frank intends to publish.

Christmas Eve was spent much the same way until it was decided to locate a church of our choice to attend the evening service.

We attended the First Presbyterian Church which at this time followed the Moravian Traditional Feast, the background which is a product of the Reformation which followed after John Hus was burned at the stake in Prague in year 1415.

This service continued with the "feast" consisting of buns and hot chocolate. After everyone was served, the congregation joined in the Moravian Blessing. This was followed by candles being distributed throughout the congregation, and as the first member in the inside aisle had his candle lit, he in turn lit the candle of his neighbor, etc. until everyone in the church held a burning candle, a reminder that Christ, indeed, is the light in the darkness of the World.

This was a service long to be remembered.

On Christmas Day we, again, spent the day together while trying to prepare for our respective journeys home.

On December 19, 1987 Roland and Elizabeth Hanka celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their children put on this occasion with a barbecue at the Humble Civic Center. Many friends and relatives attended, and it was enjoyed by all.

Willie and Edna Wehring honored their son, Gary and bride April with an open house on December 27 at the home of their daughter, Cindy and Mark Bennett. Gary and April got married in November and surprised us all. We wish you a long, healthy and happy marriage.

Evelyn and Bill Vornsand had a sad Christmas. Evelyn's mother, Mrs. Kocich, died December 22 at the age of 96. We sincerely sympathize with you, Evelyn and Bill.

In a week or two, I'll get in the groove of this letter - writing under my new job as second vice president.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: I'm pinch - hitting this month as your reporter -- our dear friend, Helen Paprskar, left us suddenly on Thanksgiving Day, 1987, but her memory will be with us forever. Her capacity for fun and her wit and humor will be remembered as well as her devotion to her family, church and

lodge. Our heartfelt sympathy to her family -- may they know that we loved her deeply.

This letter will try to catch you up on the lodge's activities since the November meeting.

First of all, our great member, Carl Zich, was presented with a plaque upon his being named "Fraternalist of the Year 1987" for Lodge No. 92. Carl has served the lodge for many, many years in various capacities -- president, trustee, carpenter, electrician -- you name it; he's done it. He, sometimes quietly -- and sometimes, not so quietly -- went about his duties and, at the same time, found time to be at numerous functions representing our lodge. Some of these included visiting nursing homes, hospitals, members' homes, serving communion if needed.

His attendance at funerals, we know, helped the bereaved through their grief. He was and is always ready to spread cheer to our aging members. In addition, he has held various offices for other fraternal and insurance groups. He and his wife, Christine, could be seen with daughter, Shirley, at most functions of the SPJST Lodge No. 92 as well as at District 111 meetings and State conventions. He was so proud to be named "Fraternalist of the Year 1987," for Lodge No. 92 and we congratulate him for an outstandig job, unselfishly giving of his time and himself.

They are already planning more remodeling at the hall, an October celebration of the 50th anniversary of the lodge building and, certainly, we look forward to old members returning for our regular meetings and invite anyone else who wishes to come to our regular meetings held on the second Sunday of each month.

Our January 1988 meeting opened with Lodge No. 92 Youth Club members leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Reports of the officers were given and approved. A moment of silence was held for our deceased members, George Davis and Helen Paprskar.

Chairman Martha Sunshine Durham reported sending birthday

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, January 20, 1988 greetings to 31 members over age 65 in December and January. Our sympathy goes to the families of Alfonse Tesar, Joe Merlick and Jim Krivanek. Our known sick included Margaret Kratky who, again, had a stay at Northeast Community Hospital for problems related to her by - pass surgery. Cheryl Hubenak made the news by going sledding during the recent snowstorm and had a broken hand to show as a result. Congratulations to Esta Belle Hubenak who has a new home at Lake Granbury; this is something that she and her late husband, Joe, had dreamed about and, though long in coming true, we are so proud that she's in her new home and enjoying it. Her new address is 122 Midway Circle, Granbury, Texas 76048.

Carl Zich reported that he had gone to nursing centers to see Vlasta Dolkos, Sunshine Easley and also Brother Joe Holasek. He reported that they were all in good spirits and sent greetings to their friends at all lodges.

Several members reported seeing Anna and Henry Langer during the holidays and the Langers say they miss their lodge meetings and friends. Henry says he could use a little domino playing time with you men -- those "grannies" at the rest home are no match for him.

Christmas greetings were read from Sophie Blazek.

Managers Joyce and Frankie Tesar reported that a Lodge 92 Polka Dance will be held on Sunday, January 24, from 3 to 7 p.m., music by Henry Rejcek Polka Band. We invite everyone to be there; admission $4 per person.

Youth Leader Gordon Hubenak has big plans already underway for 1988.

He had at least four new members at the January meeting and looks for a decided increase in membership in the coming year. The youth club is sponsoring the Valentine's Day Dance on Sunday, February 14, at the hall.

For this one day, the lodge meeting will be held at 1 p.m. and no one is to bring desserts. Instead, the dance will begin at 3 p.m. with music by Cen Tex Polka Band. Sandwiches and desserts will be available for sale by the youth club members during the dance; there will be a cake walk; a cake decorating contest for ages 6 - 12, 13 18; and adults -- so all of you get your cakes spruced up and let's vie for the prizes and then give the cakes to the youth for their cake walk. In addition, a teenage or youth queen and an adult queen will be named our Valentine Sweethearts at the dance. Sounds like fun, doesn't it?

Youth Leader Gordon Hubenak also announced that the youth will be sponsoring an "Adult Achievement Day" -- they want to see what our adults can do as to competition in foods, needlecraft, sewing, crafts, talent, pictorials, and handicraft other than needlecraft. The age groups are 18 - 40; 41 - 60: and 61 and up. They will award prizes or gift certificates in each group with outside judges making the selections. Get your entries ready -they plan to have this day in the spring -- watch the Vestnik calendar for the day.

In other business, Clara Cohen was named chairman of the 50th anniversary of our building to be held on October 9, 1988. Her committeemen are Kenneth Krivanek, Al Kercho, Frankie Tesar, Daniel Kubala and Gordon Hubenak.

Knowing Clara, we can rest assured it will be a great day and something to look forward to. We'll hear more of her plans at the coming meetings.

Alene and Al Kercho served a delicious meal of roast and all the

trimmings for our members. There will be no meal at the February meeting due to the Valentine Dance at 3 p.m. (buy sandwiches and desserts during dance from Youth Club). Al and Alene graciously volunteered to do the cooking for the March meeting.

In closing, I would like to thank all the ladies who brought the delicious cookies to our Lodge 92 Christmas Party. To the lodge, we say thank you for the candy, fruit and nut bags distributed to all who came, and to the Youth Club, our many thanks for a lovely program of songs, dances, carols, Nativity scene and candlelight procession. You brought smiles and laughter to us all and we appreciate it.

We remember having the same feelings you all displayed -- being scared to stand before a microphone, seeing all those faces in the audience, trying not to "mess up" -- you were wonderful and you did GREAT! Our thank you list would not be complete unless we said THANKS A MILLION, Lodge 180, Burleson, for such a wonderful party for the four lodges in the Metroplex at Christmastime. Those of you members who have never attended one of these parties are missing a real treat. Just another benefit of being an SPJST member to be proud of.

On Lodge Activity Of Lodge 133, San Antonio Report

SPJST Lodge 133 members began the afternoon with a Christmas luncheon. The meeting convened at 2 p.m. with President Anthony Trilicek leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence held for deceased members.

The roll call of officers showed all present except Brother Bill Mares, vice president. He was with his wife at St. Luke's Lutheran Hospital. As of this report, Sister Stella Mares died on the morning of December 26, 1987. Please refer to the Sympathy Section for more details.

Two new members were welcomed into the lodge, namely, Sisters Joyce Murrin and Barbara Wildberger.

Appointments for various jobs were made by the president. Accepting these appointments were Joe Stryk, flag bearer; Entertainment Committee Lucille Dlugosh, Scrapbooks and

The youth group sang Christmas songs for the members.

Anniversary Chairman Emil E. - Matula, and Social Committee Brother and Sisters Matula, Stryk, Dlugosh, Spacek, Rohan and Trilicek.

Brother Emil E. Matula then initiated the following for the 1988 offices: Anthony Trilicek, president; Bill Mares (in absentia), vice president; and Jarolyn Popp, secretary treasurer.

The door prizes were won by Henrietta Kalmus, first; John Pekar, second; Julia Sefcik, third; and Tom Moczygemba, fourth.

The youth club then sang some Christmas carols for the members and displayed some crafts which were for sale.

The following were congratulated on their December birthdays: Karen Popp, Bessie Sliva, Bob Popp, Viola Kurtz, Emil Rohan, Grace Rohan Bienek.

The fund - raising activity was brought to conclusion. Chairman Don Netek reported that the project was a success. Dominic F. Netek

The SPJST members of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio unanimously selected Brother Dominic F. Netek as member of the year from our lodge.

Dominic was an active secretary of the lodge for many years and was instrumental in organizing the 1980 SPJST Quadrennial Convention, chairman of the 1984 Lodge 133 Picnic for the Abused Children's Foundation, leader of the well - known Czech singers for the past 25 years, civic leader in organizing the homeowners against Highland Hills High School Stadium, members of the association against higher property taxes, translator for the Czechoslovakian competition team that visits Fort Sam Houston on an annual basis, member of the St. Margaret Mary Parish, president of the St. Margaret Mary Men's Club, active member of the KJT, The Hermann Sons, and other civic organizations. Dominic is never too busy to help anyone in any way that he can.

Brother Dominic F. Netek is a disabled veteran of World War II who had an outstanding record with the 23rd Infantry of the 2nd Infantry Division from "D" Day of June, 1944 until he was seriously wounded in the Liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945.

Brother Netek holds such military honors as American Defense Medal, European Liberation Medal, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart for bravery and wounds received liberating France and the homeland of Czechoslovakia.

Brother Netek recuperated from his wounds and went to work for Uncle Sam at Kelly Field, where he gave 35 years of unselfish and dedicated service to his country.

It is my understanding that Dominic F. Netek donated his uniform and awards to the SPJST Museum.

Dominic F. Netek is well - known throughout the State of Texas and is an active member of his "L" Company 23rd Infantry Association, and the 2nd Infantry Division Association.

161, La Parita Meeting

A very enjoyable fellowship meeting was held December 13, 1987 at Gateway Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. in Pleasanton, Texas with 15 members and one guest attending.

President Lloyd House called the meeting to order and asked the group if they would like to have the luncheon first since so much business was on the agenda. This was agreeable with all present. Joe Juricek gave the table prayer.

Tables were beautifully decorated, carrying out Christmas, making the occasion more enjoyable. Luncheon of choice was served and enjoyed by all.

The meeting was then called to order

by President Lloyd House asking everyone to stand and repeat the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Sister Tillie Valchar was asked to give the secretary's report. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved as read by the president, followed by the treasurer's report.

Old Business -- President Lloyd House asked the members to express themselves on the annual get together. Tillie Valchar offered her home for the occasion. A Christmas luncheon was decided with each

New Business -(1) With the convention coming up in June in Temple. Election of a delegate with Tillie Valchar being elected. Lipman Ermis was elected alternate.

(2) Policy changes -- officers don't need to sign policy from now on.

(3) Direct billing question was asked

by President Lloyd House. Members expressed desire of remaining as is.

(4) Treasurer Tillie Valchar discussed expenses of the lodge. Henry Mann talked about meal prices. It was decided to limit the amount. It was also decided to stop the door prizes.

(5) Audit Committee -- same members, Jim Zezula, Lipman Ermis and Joe Juricek.

(6) Election of officers with a vote and passed to retain the same members: President -- Lloyd House Vice President -- Joe Juricek Sec./Treas. -- Tillie Valchar Reporter -- Mary Wallace (7) A donation was made and approved for Crime Stoppers and the Scholarship Fund.

The next meeting will be held Sunday, March 13, 1988 at 11:30 a.m. at Gateway Restaurant, Pleasanton, Texas.

All members were asked by Secretary Tillie Valchar to call or mail in the number of hours each gave to help with the sick or otherwise by January 15, 1988.

187 Officers Installed, Christmas Celebrated Lodge

Approximately 50 members of Round Rock Lodge 187 were present at the hall on December 27 to witness the installation of the 1988 officers and newly - elected members of the Board of Trustees. The general meeting started at 2 p.m. and was immediately followed by the installation ceremonies. Brother Bernard M. Gebala, Vice President of the Supreme Lodge, was present to install the officers. Neal Boydston recognized for his years of hard work and dedication to Lodge No. 187, Round Rock. installation ceremonies were complete.

Everyone had a very good time exchanging gifts, socializing, and eating some fabulous roast beef and all the trimmings. Pecan pies were everywhere, thanks to a bumper crop of pecans and an abundance of very good cooks! Thanks to everyone who helped decorate the hall and prepare all of the delicious food.

Brother Neal Boydston was recognized and thanked at the December general meeting for all of the time, hard work, and dedication he provided Lodge 187 over the many years that he served as a member of the Board of Trustees. Neal's firm handshake, warm smile, and valuable input will certainly be missed at the board meetings. When Neal is not at the lodge or with his family, he is hard at work at the Williamson County Court House where he serves in capacity of County Clerk. Neal's wife, Joan, is also active at Lodge 187 where she serves as financial secretary. A special thanks go out to each of these fine folks for all they have done.

Harvesters Free Appreciation Dance

Czech

The Czech Harvesters Polka Band of Dallas will celebrate their tenth anniversary on Saturday, January 30, at the SPJST Lodge No. 84 in Dallas.

All members of the band are of Czech descent, and have always enjoyed a full schedule of playing for numerous dances, weddings and festivals throughout Texas and Oklahoma including the Polka Days of Oklahoma, Ennis National Polka Festival, the Westfest and the American - Czech Day festivities at the State Fair of Texas. The versatile musicians have the ability to play seventeen different instruments. The band is primarily a Czech polka and waltz band. However, the group plays a wide selection of country/western and modern songs.

No. 88, Houston Helps Children In Need Lodge

Lodge No. 88 members have been so generous during the past year in helping those street children who were and are so desperately in need of love and attention to the bare necessities of life.

The Covenant House of Houston is doing a tremendous job in assisting these children of the streets who are in such great need of food, clothing and shelter.

This is one of the children's care centers in the Houston area to which much of our clothing donations goes.

Now, that the cold blustery winter is upon us, the need of WARM CLOTHING, heavy socks, toilet articles and other essentials are in great demand.

Please check your closets for any heavy winter clothing that you no longer need and bring it to the lodge and leave it with Shirley in the office so that Homer may pick it up and deliver to the Covenant House.

Any and all sizes of clothing and shoes are needed so that these children may be kept warm during our winter seige.

As the Houston Chronicle newspaper once wrote "Runaway children are the victims of the so called victimless crimes. Covenant House's program is designed to help them and is established to treat these victims of exploitation -- runaway children."

Wouldn't it make each of us feel proud to know that we gave a warm coat, a sweater or warm dress or pair of pants to keep at least one of these children warm?

And how fortunate to know that one of these children are not one of our own but, again, how fortunate it is to know that we can certainly make life a little easier.

As Father Ritter, who heads the Covenant House nationwide, has said so many times "The street is no place for a child."

Class At Alief

Alief Evening School under auspices of AISD (Alief Independent School District) is again offering a Conversational Czech course at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Blvd. on the south and Alief - Clodine on the north on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief.

The first lesson of this 12 - week course, designed to develop basic skill in the Czech Language wherever it is spoken, will be on January 20, 1988 and henceforth once a week on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuition, set by the school, will be $43 and the instructor will be John J. Karas of Houston.

Fraternally, Claudette Reese State Youth Director *** CZECH INVOLVEMENT IN WORLD WAR I Submitted by: John William See, III SPJST Lodge No. 9, Snook December 26, 1987 CZECH INVOLVEMENT IN WORLD WAR I° World War I involved nearly all of Europe, Asia, Africa and North America with Australia and a large portion of South America. Never before in history has a war involved so much of the earth's area and population. Not just in numbers involved, but in every other way this war made all previous wars small. Two pistol shots signaled the start of war when Archduke Francis Ferdinand, who was heir to the throne of Austria Hungary and his wife Sophie were shot. This shooting is said to have marked the outbreak of war, but several basic causes of World War I are: growth of nationalism; the system of military alliances that created a balance of power, competition for colonies and other territory and the use of secret diplomacy. Some four years later an armistice ended the fighting.

The cost involved in this war was about 200 billion dollars.

After nearly four years of war in the April 1918, Allied forces landed in Vladivostok, Siberia, to help 60,000

Czechs and Slovaks who had been prisoners of war in Russia. Then in the fall of 1918, Czechs, Slovaks, and Poles declared their independence. On November 3, representatives of Emperor Charles I agreed to an armistice. Germany now stood alone.

Of all the foreign units in Russia, none fought longer, more effectively or with so good a purpose as a group that was drawn into conflict by accident. This was a legion of 42,000 Czechs. ' This group was all former prisoners and deserters from the Austro - Hungarian Army. Their expenses were paid by France. They fought Germans alongside Russian armies on the Eastern front. When Russia left the war, the allies persuaded the Bolsheviks to help ship the Czechs home. By this time the Czechs were glad to go, but there was a problem. Since the hostile Central Powers of Austria - Hungary and Germany barred the route west, the Czechs would have to cross 5,000 miles of Siberia, then sail from Vladivostok back around to Western Europe.

The Czechs did not let this bother them. The Bolsheviks even tried to disarm them, this was a big mistake.

The Czechs conquered a local Red force, took a section of the Trans Siberian railroad complete with rolling stock and headed for Vladivostok.

While en route, the Legion was issued several proposals, one of these being from Winston Churchill to support White offensives. The Czechs, for a short time, fought under a White commander, Admiral Alexander Kolchak. But their main goal was to get back home. As this Legion continued home, they captured weapons and armored its train. It grew in firepower and prosperity. The soldiers, and some women who had been picked up, lived in remodeled boxcars. These boxcars were even painted with Czech scenery. On these trains they had boxcars which were banks, post office, a press that printed a daily newspaper and a looted Czarist treasure cove: 29 carloads of gold, silver, platinum and gems.

Near the end of their journey they had a battle with a Red force, and the Czechs gave up the treasure train and handed over Admiral Alexander Kolchak to a Red firing squad in return for safe passage to Vladivostok.

After two years and more than 15,000 miles in' the late 1920 they finally arrived at home to a brand new sovereign nation, Czechoslovakia that had been carved out of the old Austro Hungarian and German empires.

Under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany and Austria Hungary had been forced to give up Czechoslovakia and pay reparations for damages caused in the war. Out of the territory that was given up was the German Sudetenland in which Germans lived. This later led to the Germans reconquering of the Sudetenland and Czechoslovakia in 1938. When the Germans did conquer Czechoslovakia, the French and British did not assist in helping the Czechs, instead signed an agreement with Hitler, known as the Munich Pact.

But for the approximate 18 years that Czechoslovakia was an independent nation, it stood out along with the United States as a symbol of democracy where the people rule.

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Youth Club Activities Dear Members and Friends: Lodge No. 6 Youth Club held their meeting after the mother lodge meeting with a good attendance.

The youth club had a busy month in December with a Christmas Pro gram/Party, worked on baskets and filled baskets for the rest home, had a program for RVOS Lodge No. 46. Our club members wish to thank RVOS Lodge No. 46 for their gift to the youth club. Thank you very much!

I also want to thank our youth club members/leaders and also all the friends who gave me gifts. Thanks!

We donated cloths to the Salvation Army and cloths/items to Goodwill, food and cloths to a needy family, gifts to special families.

January 6th, we donated a cake to the West Rest Haven for their Birthday Party.

Our lodge had an Appreciation Party for all the members and the youth club had a free bingo for its members. Everyone enjoyed the party and bingo.

We were glad to have SL Vice President Bernard Gebala and District In Director Sid Pokladnik at our lodge meeting, and we also were glad to have State Youth Director Claudette Reese at our Christmas Party.

We will be working on Valentine cards, crafts and scrapbook.

The youth members are going bowling at the TSTI Campus on January 24th. We plan to meet at the Texas Department of Public Safety Driver's License building next to TSTI at 2:30 p.m.

January birthday celebrant is Craig Hromadka. The Birthday Party was Friday, January 15th. Bradley Kroll brought the cake in January and we also had punch. Samanta Hrabal will bring the cake in February.

November 7th was a movie trip, followed by eating out at Dairy Queen, regular monthly meeting on the 14th.

On November 27th Christmas wreaths were made and they were given to S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes and also gaily wrapped Christmas gifts.

The month of December, what an exciting month! There's always so much to do and see at this time of the year. The first thing we did is go to see the Christmas Tree Forest which is presented by the Auxiliary to the Art Museum of South Texas, partially funded by Bayview Hospital, Corpus Christi. This year the theme was "Christmas Around The World."

Dear Readers, The January 10, 1988 meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called to order at 2:15 p.m. by President Janet Macek. Secretary Susan Holtman led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The roll was read by, our secretary.

There were 16 members and one guest, Mark Macek, present. The minutes were read and approved.

Our January social was bowling on January 18 at Action World in Temple. An enjoyable time was found by all who went.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 p.m. After our meeting, we made crafts for the nursing home.

Our next Youth Club meeting will be Sunday, February 14 at 2 p.m. Yes, this is Valentine's Day, but please make an effort to attend. Members, we need your support at the meetings and if you don't attend you miss out on many important dates and events.

The Harbor Lights are very pretty.

The owners of boats and shrimp boats were all decked out with beautiful lights. (Picture of Harbor Lights appeared on the front cover of "Texas Highways"). We also took a tour of the Heritage Park on December 12th.

In this park, there are homes that have been restored by non - profit organizations. The interiors of the homes have been adapted to the needs of each organization. In the park, there is now the "Jalufka House" which was donated to the City of Corpus Christi. The house was restored by the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas. The house was built-in 1901 by James L. Jalufka at 1408 N. Mesquite in what is known as "Old Irishtown."

Meeting (games were held on the 19th), December 20th -- Nutcracker Ballet, Christmas Party -- December 22nd and a food basket was taken on December 23rd to People - People Case No. 11, and December 30th -movie trip, the club members gave several food baskets, etc.

Our January meeting was well attended with sixteen members, two guests and five adults and movie trip 1 - 2,. January 16th another movie trip (we go to Sunrise Mall where it costs $1.10 for any movie, anytime).

February 6th we will attend the Air Force Band Concert at Bayfront Plaza; this is free entertainment. There are many more activities and charity projects planned.

Under old business we talked about our Christmas Party which we held at our lodge where we had barbecue trimmings and we exchanged gifts. We also skated and did a skit on the "Twelve Days of Christmas;" everyone had a swell time.

Our new business is planning a Valentine cookie and box decoration contest for our February meeting which will be February 14th. We also planned two cake walks for January 23rd and February 6th.

With no further business, our door prize winner was Jamie Williams. The meeting adjourned at 3 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by Robyn Jansa. Brian Plaster led the pledge and also read the minutes.

Bridget Schwartz gave the treasurer's report.

Youth Leader Sandra Jansa passed out forms for the T - Shirt Contest.

After the meeting, we made stained glass Christmas ornaments. These were a lot of fun to make and were very pretty.

While the ornaments were baking, we watched a video of our skit that we presented to the adult lodge in December.

Later, we had a luncheon. Everyone had a great time.
