"Editor 'OMMENTS imommoriammism■ owlime In this year 1988 just beginning is a good time to do some serious thinking about our individual futures, our various organizations we belong to and our duties to them, the many things we plan to accomplish and should do, etc.

It doesn't do too much good to dwell on the past and what we did or didn't do.

Of course, our SPJST Society is the main interest which is uppermost in your editor's mind most of the time, and really should be, however, there are other things to give attention to as each day and time go by. One of these are a sincere concern about the status of our Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) effort to establish an endowment for the continuous teaching of Czech language at one of our State of Texas universities (Czech Chair), either at the University of Texas or Texas A&M University. We had a good start in 1986 (our Bicentennial), but 1987 was rather slow so we need to try to accomplish our goal of $50000 as soon as possible; the longer we delay, the further our goal is slipping behind!

Following is an article sent to our attention by Brother Kevin Hannan from a Canadian newspaper about what the Ukrainian community is doing and accomplishing in Alberta.

They now have $800,000 (including matching funds) for an "Ukrainian Chair." Just think, if they can do it in Canada and the Polish can do likewise in Pennsylvania, what is keeping us (about 500,000 Czech - Moravian Slovak descendants in Texas) from accomplishing this? You are encouraged to read the article which follows: The University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada is one step closer to having an academic. Chair in Ukrainian cultural studies.

Thanks to a recent gift of $250,000 from a Toronto couple, the Edmonton' - based university is now only $125,000 short of having its first ever endowed Chair in the Faculty of Arts.

Erast and Lydia Huculak of Toronto gave the University of Alberta a quarter - million - dollar check in September after visiting the Edmonton area, and seeing for themselves the extensive work being done there in Ukrainian culture.

The Alberta government's Advanced Education ministry's "two for - one" matching dollar plan brings the endowment fund to more than $800,000.

To be called the Huculak Chair in Ukrainian Culture and Ethnography, the Chair will be housed in the Department of Slavic and East European Studies.

Yes, 1988 is moving on and the year has much in store for us in our SPJST --- check the Bulletin Board, Youth Calendar, and other information which appears in the Vestnik. Needless to say, the convention in. June, which happens every 4 years, is a very important event for our Society. It is only correct that we all appreciate the democratic importance of this event ---

our membership elects delegates to represent them in the deliberations at the convention which is something many insurance companies do not have; the owners and officials make the rules and the certificateholders simply pay the dues without having any "say so" about the type of insurance they are offered. Recently, we published the standing of our Society as far as our solvency is concerned, we hope you read them; they are also in your 1988 SPJST wall calendar.

Members, do some thinking about proposals to be made to the Bylaw, Insurance, Finance and Publication Committees and so in time for them to receive them before the committees meet --- the dates will be appearing in the Vestnik by the respective committee secretaries.

Remember, also, that the district and lodge meetings are good places to discuss the future with your brothers and sisters and, especially, your delegates! *** Your little boy disobeys you and just cannot sit still. His fidgeting and willfulness disrupt his first - grade class, and he often kicks and screams at other children. He has trouble reading and writing, even though his intelligence is above average. He spews out words so fast that often no one understands him. He hardly sleeps at all, instead wandering around the house, bumping into things. His teacher thinks the boy is hyperactive and needs medical help. Maybe -- but proceed slowly, and be very skeptical.

Your son's problem could be as simple as misbehavior. True hyperactivity is hard to diagnose. Even medical specialists have a hard time telling from other disorders with similar symptoms. Dyslexia, for example, also can lead to classroom disruption.

The term hyperactivity refers to a complex range of behavioral disorders -- not just a single illness. There's no known cause or cure. Some 5 million youngsters, the vast majority of those boys, may be affected. The pattern usually appears by age 3, but it's often dismissed as normal rambunctiousness -- until it wreaks havoc in the structured setting of the classroom. A teacher who suspects hyperactivity probably will suggest that you consult a pediatrician, psychiatrist, psychologist or guidance counselor, who will conduct interviews with teachers, parents and the child. If the specialist concludes the child is hyperactive, a treatment program will be proposed. But because diagnosis is so difficult, you should get a second and even a third opinion. ***

Vintage photographs can take a beating over the years through exposure to light, humidity, heat and acid fumes from cardboard boxes.

You may be tempted to clean damaged or dirty photos yourself, but such efforts may backfire and ruin the treasures. Never, for example, try to clean a daguerreotype with tarnish remover or metal polish, even though it's a photo made on a metal plate. If you simply want a cleaner image, have a professional studio take a picture of the photo.

Photographs of originals may appear sharper, and copies can be touched up to eliminate obvious flaws or stains. To repair a damaged original, your best bet is to hire a photographer conservator at a cost ranging from $50 to over $1,000. Ask the conservation department of a local museum for names. ***

Scholarship Program For SPJST Members

accrediting body. Negotiations for admission must be conducted entirely by the scholarship applicant.

Application may be made during the high school senior year. Scholarships will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school, or its equivalent.

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

College undergraduates may apply for a scholarship for the next school, year.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE Applicants must be qualified members of the SPJST. Qualified members are those having an active SPJST insurance certificate in force. The certificate must be in force one year at the time of application to be considered.

The SPJST will award scholarships in the Freshman and Undergraduate Programs in the amount of $500. You can only be a recipient of one SPJST Scholarship, however, if you are unsuccesful in your initial application you may reapply the following school years or until you are a recipient. ***

(Editor's Note: Our SPJST Society was requested to contribute an article to "The Fraternal Umbrella" in the Fraternal Monitor, a publication of the NFCA (National Fraternal Congress of America); December was the month the article appeared in and it is printed below.) *** The founders of the SPJST dreamed of a society that would help its members through crises. They realized that those left helpless must be helped.

Therefore they developed financial protection and fraternal programs which provided a financial, social and cultural support system for members within local lodges.

Today the society, after 90 years of existence, continues to promote those fraternal benefits which nurture cultural awareness, leadership and loving concern for members.

The youth program of the SPJST is one such fraternal benefit. It encourages the development of youth clubs in the local lodges where parents, youth leaders and youth plan together activities that will best contribute to the development of youth and enhance the fraternal program of the lodge. In addition, in each of the seven districts and at the state level opportunities are

provided for youth to present their achievements in craft, talent and royalty competition. It is hoped that the leadership qualities that are developed through this process and the friendships that are developed through a state - wide camping program will enhance our youth, our society and country as well.

Each year in connection with State Youth Achievement Day, one youth member wins a $1,000 scholarship for outstanding contributions to the youth club, lodge and community over a three - year period. This year contestants were asked to write an essay on the topic "How Fraternalism can benefit a Society." We would like to share the winning essay of Miss Donna Schoeneman which expresses her ideas on the topic.

How Fraternalism Can Benefit A Society

by Donna Schoeneman THE TRUEST MEANING of the word "fraternalism" could best be expressed as "the pathway to

fulfillment" in relation to a society such as the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST). This organization provides its members with a sense of fulfillment in all levels of human needs. The popular motivational theory of need hierarchy

by A. Maslow best illustrates how the SPJST organization fulfills the needs of its members. Maslow's idea of needs states that all humans have physiological, safety, belonging and love, self - esteem, and self actualization needs. His theory further states that the lower - level needs, beginning with the physical needs, must be met before the higher - level needs can be achieved.

Basis of Fraternalism A brief analysis of the historical basis for the formation of the SPJST organization, plus a look at the current involvements of the group, will illustrate the idea that "fraternalism" is the "pathway to fulfillment" for SPJST members.

Fraternalism in general is based upon the teaching in the Bible about the brothers, Cain and Abel. That lesson on brotherhood shows that we are our brothers' keeper. Throughout history there has been concern in all societies that the needs of their people

be met. Early societies were concerned with helping the less fortunate in their groups, particularly the widows and orphans. They tried to find the best way to deal with the inevitable fact of death. These concerns became the basis for the formation of the SPJST organization and many similar groups.

Founding of SPJST The first plan of the C.S.P.S. group, a forerunner of the SPJST, called for the payment of one dollar by each member into the insurance fund.

When a member died, the family members were paid up to $2,000, and another dollar was collected from each member to rebuild the fund. From this very small beginning, the SPJST organization has evolved and developed into a financially sound organization which offers a wide variety of plans to assist its membership in wise financial planning and investments.

Through the development of a life insurance program for its members, the SPJST achieves success in fulfilling the first two human needs stated by Maslow, which are the physiological and safety needs. Members are offered the opportunity to purchase life insurance to provide financially for their needs as well as assure their families of financial stability. This relates directly to the members and their families being able to meet their physical and safety needs such as food, clothing and shelter. The operation of the SPJST rest homes in Taylor and Needville are yet another example of how the organization works to provide for the needs of its members.

Once these two basic areas of physical and safety needs are met, the individual is then ready to achieve the. higher - level needs of belonging and fraternal Again, the loving. organization of SPJST is "the pathway to fulfillment."

As the early Czech immigrants arrived in America, they tried to settle in areas where other Czech immigrants had settled. As with any group of people, they desired to be near to those whose customs, habits, interests and language were the same. They had a need for "belonging." Through the early efforts of Vaclav Pohl and many more outstanding individuals, groups were formed to unite the Czech immigrants in groups such as the tCech Society.' Later efforts by J.R. Kubena and many others molded the SPJST organization as we know it today --- a place where all members feel they belong and are loved.

Fraternal Activities Lodge members engage in a host of activities ranging from Bar - B - Q's to domino tournaments to kolache festivals. Dance festivals are also annual events in many communities where everyone enjoys the polkas and waltzes. These events and many others give SPJST members an opportunity to enjoy the friendship and fellowship of being with other members. SPJST Youth Club members join in many of these activities at a very young age and they grow up feeling they, too, "belong" to this group in a very special way.

Any observer to events at any SPJST lodge can sense the feeling of belonging and loving. The warm handshakes, the hugs, the smiles and the laughter tell that here truly is a group where the members feel they "belong."

The feeling of belonging carries into the very next rung on Maslow's ladder for the fulfillment of needs. The SPJST offers the opportunity for the

human fulfillment of self - esteem and self - actualization. In other words, SPJST helps its members feel good about themselves and it also helps them achieve their potential as individuals and as members of the group.

Self - esteem is based upon personal feelings of achievement and recognition or respect from others. A feeling of patriotism for our country and the flag is central to the ideals of SPJST. The actual structure of the lodges also gives members an opportunity to achieve goals and develop self - esteem. Through serving as officers, as committee members, or even just as a member of a SPJST group, a person can feel a sense of accomplishment.

One member alone may not be able to complete an entire redecorating of the building which houses the lodge.

But some members who have a talent for carpentry can do the woodwork.

Other members can use their talents to paint. Yet other members may use their talents to bring food to the others who are working. Everyone can feel a sense of self - worth in working in a cooperative manner to help a group accomplish its goal.

Youth Clubs The opportunity to achieve potential is evident through SPJST for members of the mother lodge as well as the youth clubs. The development of leaders is encouraged from the club structure. This development is particularly important in our youth clubs, because tomorrow's leaders will evolve from these young people. The Youth Achievement Day activities on the district and state levels also give the young people an opportunity to achieve their potential. Whether the activity is preparing a dance routine for a talent entry, making a sailboat for handicraft, or delivering a speech for royalty, the SPJST member is learning to develop his or her potential.

This accomplishment of potential was the highest achievement Maslow placed in his needs hierarchy and SPJST definitely helps its members develop their potential.

Support of the Group In closing, I am reminded of a simple truth I learned from a ceremonial I presented for a camp closing recently.

There was a little girl who gathered a number of small sticks and tied them in a bundle. Then she challenged several of her friends to break the sticks in the bundle. No one in the group could break the sticks in the bundle. Then the girl untied the bundle and handed each person a single stick.

Then she asked them to break the single sticks, which they did. The simple truth is that standing alone we may break, but with the support of the group we will be much stronger.

That small truth is the story of fraternalism and how it benefits SPJST. This organization provides "the pathway to fulfillment" of the needs of its members ranging from the physical needs to the development of potential. And it is through the brotherhood of organizations like SPJST that we find our strength and fulfill our needs.

Lodge No. 172, Pasadena Dear Members: A happy, healthy and prosperous new year, 1988 to all!

First, I want to say "thank you" for electing me your president for 1988, also I'm looking forward to working with all new elected officers, committee workers and members. We all must work and pull together to have a successful year.

I'd like to say "thank you" to all officers, committees and workers who did such a good job last year in running the affairs of our lodge. You

were the best organized working group of people I've seen in my 50 years in SPJST. I will be looking for your support and help this year.

To you members of Pasadena SPJST Lodge No. 172, there is a job for all of us to do, such as: 1. Help work and support our functions.

2. Pay local lodge dues which are $6 per year. This money is used to pay for our two socials and help to det ray the cost of flowers, get well cards, or memorials for any active member who dies. So let's all pay our local lodge dues, and let's make this a 100 percent active - member lodge.

Our quarterly and annual meeting, held at Rosenberg Civic Center, was not very well attended although our District V Director Jerry Prochazka and District V Sales Representative Sister Helen Hegwood paid us a surprise visit.

After the reading of the minutes of our previous meeting, a report was made on the compilation of asset of our lodge. This showed that we had sufficient funds to contribute to worthy causes. After some good discussion, it was voted to present a $500 scholarship to a local senior in high school; this to be finalized by Brother Frank and Sister Pat Parma.

It was decided to grant up to $250 in goods to S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville. The Shelter For Abused Children and Women in Richmond to receive $200 to help repair heating in the home. "Helping Hands" to be presented with $250 to help the truly needed in the community with food, clothing and utilities. The Czech language chair to be allowed $1,000 toward their goal.

The annual meeting was taken up by election of officers. The same officers were returned to their respective places. Brother Milton Vyvial was elected to be delegate and Ann Vyvial

News

Our December meeting was not held. Instead members voted to have a Christmas Party. Each member brought a gift for a needy child. They were given to Harvest House in Burleson. The turkey and dressing prepared by Frances Simmank was delicious and so were the various covered dishes and desserts brought by all the ladies.

On December 13, our lodge hosted our annual four - Lodge 92, 154, 180 and 183 Christmas Party to approximately 300 people.

Honoring us with their presence were District III Director Sid Pokladnik and his wife, Justine; Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir and his wife, Dorothy from the Supreme Lodge and Editor R.J. Sefcik and his wife, Maxine. We thank them for taking all the pictures, too.

The performance by the Czech Folk Dancers from West was superb. The music by the Harold Strand Orchestra was very special since we very seldom have a polka and waltz band anymore.

Thanks to Mydell Grochoske and all her elves, too numerous to mention, for the beautiful Christmas decorations. We, especially thank Fran Wheat and her daughter, Janet.

The delectable ginger bread house made by Bonnie Tesar of Lodge No. 92 and donated to the lodge was won by one of the Hampton children.

Thanks a lot, Mrs. Tesar! Thanks also to Tracy Payne for the big beautiful Christmas cake, and let's don't forget the women and men who prepared the dinner. We appreciate the cakes, pies, and desserts of all kinds brought by the ladies of the other lodges very much.

After the meal officers of all four lodges were installed by Director Sid Pokladnik.

The eye glasses program is still going strong at Lodge Pokrok Houston.

So many members and lots of non members have been so generous and thoughtful in bringing their old outdated prescription glasses to Homer at the lodge.

If you haven't joined this group of people as yet why not give it some thought and start the new year off right. Best yet, how about checking the bureau of dresser drawers or glove compartment in the car for your old glasses, but least of all let us not forget that old trunk in the attic for dede6ka brYle a babiC'ky brYle. (I certainly hope that I can trust my friend and yours, Bill Souchek, for guiding me in the right direction in using the proper Czech words. You know what a cut up that Bill feller is -- for all I know he might just be telling me to go jump in the lake; wouldn't do that, would you Bill?)

I'm certainly proud to advise that 455 pairs of used eye glasses have been donated in order that others might improve their vision disabilities.

Alief Evening School under auspices of AISD (Alief Independent School District) is again offering a Conversational Czech course at Hastings High School. S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II Corner Arnold Witte is the new resident to join the group at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in December and Lydia Fuentes, Ophelia Batello, Cindy Potter and Nancy Burt joined our staff.

Visiting Annie Zich over the Christmas holidays were her niece, Andrea Hardcastle, and family of Roswell, New Mexico.

The residents want to thank everyone who came caroling and also the ones who left fruit baskets, candy treats and cookies. The donation given

by SPJST Lodge No. 81 for the Residents' Activity - Fund was greatly appreciated.

The senior citizens' social held at the Presbyterian Church was attended and enjoyed by Gladys Hix and Helen, Valci k Sunday, December 6, the St. Michael's Altar Society and KJZT Junior Society came caroling and had a party with the residents serving cookies and punch to all.

Monday afternoon, December 7 and 21, Betty Seiler came from the library to show movies. The residents enjoyed the movies and popcorn.

Tuesday afternoon, December 8, the KCs came to play bingo with the residents.

Friday, December 11, the Jaycees provided rest home residents dinner which consisted of turkey, dressing and all the trimmings. The residents' Christmas Party was held at 6:30 p.m.

St. Michael's Confirmation Class provided a program and the Brazos Crossing Chorus provided singing.

The Jaycees provided Santa Claus and gave gifts to all the residents and helped pass out other gifts under the tree. Refreshments were served to all residents and their families. Everyone reported a wonderful time.

Monday afternoon, December 14, the Hope Lutheran Church women of Beasley came for a sing - a - long and brought cookies and had a social afterwards. They also brought prizes for bingo. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon. In the evening, the Junior and Senior National Honor Society of East Bernard came caroling and visited with the residents.

Tuesday evening, December 15, the Junior National Honor Society of Needville came caroling and visited with the residents.

Thursday afternoon, December 17, Garland Hurtye and Mary Goffinet, with the Fort Bend Humane Society, brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

"Happy Birthdays" for the month of December were residents Frances .Jezek, Josie Donihoo, John Brenner and Emma L. Tielke; also Mary Trevino, Mary Ann Foston, Rosa de la Rosa and Theresa King, staff members.

The Birthday Party was held Friday, December 18, which included singing "Happy Birthday" and listening to favorite music. The Unique Shop provided corsages and boutonnieres.

St. Michaers'Altar Society provided a cake. Volunteer Melva Hastings helped serve cake, ice cream, coffee and punch to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Saturday afternoon, December 19, SPJST Lodge 88 of Houston came and brought gifts for the residents and sang English and Czech Christmas carols.

Refreshments were served. Everyone had a fine time.

Tuesday morning, December 22, the Good Beginning Day Care came to sing. The Staff Party was held at noon.

The home provided ham and sausage and everyone brought a covered dish.

Gifts were exchanged and everyone had a fine time. In the evening, the Cub Scout Pack No. 129 came caroling.

Everyone reported having a fine time on Christmas Day. Monday evening, December 28, Larry Ognoski, Fred Gerke and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents. Everyone had a great time. Families are invited to come and be with their loved ones.

Thanks to all the denominations of churches in this area that give services and communion and also to the other volunteers who do services in the home to residents in December.

We are beginning a new year jam packed with new and exciting ideas for our youth. Take note of the Youth Calendar for 1988, there are some very important dates that affect the entire youth program. Mark these dates on your calendar and make plans to attend your trainings, retreats, camps and YADs. Watch your Vestnik for registration forms and further details.

Youth Leaders interested in attending the Longhorn Recreation Lab should get in contact with their DYC. The lab is a five - day workshop encompassing various topics such as dance, skits, games and crafts.

Youth should be concentrating on earning points and attending youth club meetings to qualify for camp and YAD. Completing your Vestnik projects and contests is an excellent way to earn valuable points.

There was a total of 22 youth clubs and 120 youth club members who completed December's Vestnik Project. Dear Youth Club Leaders and Members: The Youth Department is sponsoring a special contest for all Youth Club Members.

The purpose of the contest is to create an artistic design for the 1988 camp T-shirts.

Lodge No. 88, Houston Youth Club Dear Brothers and Sisters, The Lodge 88 Youth Club held their Christmas Program on December 14, 1987. We began the program by singing Christmas carols along with the Lodge 88 Choral Group.

Afterwards, youth members performed in their own version of "The Night Before Christmas."

Characters were M.C. -- Darlene Migl Old Lady -- Crystal Wallace Mother and Father -- Tommie Wallace and Matthew Mabry Children -- Darren Havemann, Jamie Meyer, Lindsey Michalak and Kristi Sokol Listening Children -- Amanda I lavemann , Darrell Havemann, Melissa Havemann and Nicholaus Havemann Thanks to all who helped out with our program. After the play was finished, Santa made his visit with all the children. Children young and old sat and talked with Santa. When the children were through talking with Santa, they received some fruit and candy that had been prepared by the Youth Club.

Our next meeting will be on January 14, 1988. I hope to see you there.

SPJST Youth Meet

Dear Vestnik Readers, Taiton SPJST Youth Club Lodge 30, met Sunday afternoon at Taiton Community Center with 16 members and 11 adults present.

Sara Zorrilla led the pledge and Landis Dornak said the prayer.

Crafts were done before the meeting was called to order by President Marcy Dorotik. The treasurer's report was read by Mrs. Jerome Dorotik and the dues report was read by Lenice Kaspar.

Michael Kaspar was recognized as having a January birthday. Poems were read by Lenice Kaspar, Valerie Roye, Michael Kaspar, Criag Dornak, Stephanie Roye and Marcy Dorotik.

Door prizes were won by Stephanie Roye, Valerie Roye, Brad Krpec, Michael Kaspar, Lenice Kaspar, Landis Dornak, Sara Zorrilla, Marcy

Dorotik, Jason Kaspar, Craig Dornak, Curtis Dorotik, Scott Krpec, Misty Novak and Jeanine Dorotik.

Contest winners were (ages 6 - 9) Valerie Roye, first; Scott Krpec, second; and Brad Krpec, third; (10 12) Craig Dornak, first; Misty Novak, second; and Lenice Kaspar, third; (13 17) Marcy Dorotik, first.

The charity project for February is to bring a pantry item to the meeting for the Blessing Cup. The contst for February is to make a Valentine. Mrs. Alvin Kahanek and Mrs. Jerorme Dorotik will serve refreshments at the February meeting.

No. 88, Houston Youth Club Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers: The youth club of Lodge No. 88 held their monthly bake sale and meeting on Thursday, December 10, 1987. The meeting was called to order

by President Crystal Wallace. The pledge and prayer were led by Vice President Darlene Migl. The register was read. There were 21 members present.

Secretary Marlene Migl read the minutes of our last meeting. There were no additions or corrections made.

We received no correspondence.

Scrapbook Committee Chairman Marlene Migl asked members to bring pictures of any past event. Social Committee Chairman Crystal Wallace asked for suggestions for upcoming socials. She also announced plans for the Christmas Program, which was held on December 14, 1987.

December birthday celebrants were Crystal Wallace (16 years on December 17) and Kristi Sokol (10 years on December 15). Happy birthday to any other members who could not attend.

Youth Leader Lora Mabry read her report for the month of December.

DYC Marie Stayton announced rules and prizes for the T - Shirt designing contest, and contributed entry forms.

After the meeting was adjourned, members of the youth club helped prepare fruit bags for the Christmas Program.

AMOS LEO HAVEL, who passed away on October 27, 1987 at his home in Dallas, Texas at the age of 63. He was the son of Edwin and Theresa Chernosky Havel of Caldwell, Texas. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 84.

Survivors include his daughter, Marjorie Colon, Houston, Texas; one granddaughter, Jenny Colon, Houston, Texas; sister, Delphine Macik, Snook, Texas; and brother, Leo A. Havel, Houston, Texas.

We, the members of SPJST Lodge No. 133, San Antonio wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed sister STELLA EDITH MARES, age 67, who passed away on December 26, 1987 in St. Luke Lutheran Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.

Funeral services for Joe Jansa, 88, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Keever Chapel with Rev. Johnnie Mansell officiating. Interment was in Myrtle Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Mr. Jansa died Monday morning at the Baylor Medical Center in Ennis.

He was born April 10, 1899 in Taylor, Texas to Joseph and Johanna Janovsky Jansa. As a small child, he moved to Ennis area with his parents where his family was enga ged in farming.

12/VESTNIK —Wednesday, January 13, 1988 He entered the U.S. Navy at the start of World War I. After his discharge, he returned to Ennis and began working for Joe Langer at his grocery store.

In 1920 he was married to Annie Langer of Ennis. In 1926 he opened his own mechanic shop. Mrs. Jansa preceded him in death in 1941. He owned and operated his own garage until 1942 when he re - entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. October 2, 1945, he was married to Mary Belle Emerson of Ennis. After their marriage they lived in Ennis.

After his discharge from World War II, he worked for the Ennis Fire Department. He then went to work for Continental Bus Company. In 1946 he went to work for Todd Implement Company. He retired in 1964. Mrs. Jansa preceded him in death in 1970.

After his retirement, he devoted most of his time to the Band Boosters Club.

He was a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 25, the American Legion for 70 years, and the Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by one son, Jerry Jansa of Dimmitt, Texas; one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Gorton Edwardson of Springdale, Arkansas; two sisters, Mrs. Walter S. Jones of Ennis and Mrs. Louise Jaresh of Tioga, Texas; six grandchildren and two great - grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Albin Quitta of Murchison and Alfon Quitta of College Station; a daughter, Angelina Sebesta of Bryan; 16 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and five great - great grandchildren.

Mrs. Quitta was a homemaker and a member of SPJST Lodge Smetana No. 39, and was a charter member of Hope Evangelical Free Church.

Mrs. Quitta outlived her SPJST insurance policy on her last living birthday and she was given recognition for her dedication to the Society by the Supreme Lodge in February, 1987.

Of Interest FRANCES QUITTA, age 96, of Bryan died Thursday morning in a local nursing home.

A funeral service for Mrs. Quitta was held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hope Evangelical Free Church in College Station, with the Rev. John Gantt officiating. Burial was in Snook Cemetery. Visitation was Friday at noon at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

Mrs. Quitta was born in Czechoslovakia on February 22, 1891 (one of twins) to Joe and Anna (Plasek) Pecena; they all came to Texas in 1892, and settled in Shiner.

She married Otto Quitta of Lavaca County on May 16, 1914. Later they moved to Brazos County where they

Note 1: With numerals jeden, dva, when object is not mentioned, we can use either masculine (jeden, dva, dvacet jeden, dvacet dva, padesat jeden, sedesat dva) or feminine form (jedna, d y e, dvacet jedna, dvacet dye, padesat jedna, sedesat dve). But when the numeral appears with its noun, the gender must agree. E.g.: jeden student, jedna studentka, dvacet jeden student, dvacet jedna studentka, tiicet dva studenti, tiicet dve studentky. But most frequent is genitive with all numerals higher than four (dvacet jedna studenttl, dvacet dva studentek).

The more colloquial jedenadvacet, dvaadvacet, etc., take of course only genitive (jedenadvacet studentu) and only the last numeral takes -i (s dvaadvaceti studentkami).

Note 2: When the numeral accompanying a noun is used in other than nominative and accusative case, the following noun is put into that particular case. E.g.: kolni rok trva deset mesicu( = G. pl.). Stalo se to pied deseti mesici ( = I. pl.).

4) Sto (one hundred) declines like m'esto. Nom. pl. is sta, but together with two sounds dye ste. Gen. pl. is set.

5) Tisic (one thousand) declines like stroj. Gen. pl. is mostly short: tisic.

6) Indefinite numerals kolik, nekolik, tolik, mnoho (how many, how much; several, a few; so many, so much; many, much) end in G, D, L, I cases in -a (kolika, nekolika, tolika, mnoha).

Items Of Interest Where To Write For Vital Records Save worry and wasted time --- it makes sense to have your vital records on hand before you need them.

When you need a certified record for a passport application, college registration, a marriage license or other important purpose it may take several weeks to get. Many Americans are sending for their vital records before such important events occur.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the Federal government does not keep files or indexes of birth, death, marriage and divorce records. To get a certified copy of any of the certificates, you should write or go to the vital statistics office in the state or area where the event occurred. The Center offers a booklet, "Where to Write for Vital Records," that lists these offices by location and type of records kept.

To make sure you get an accurate record for your request and that y.,ur request is filled quickly when writing to vital statistics offices, follow these steps: Write to the appropriate office to have your request filled. Under the appropriate office, information has been included in the booklet for birth and death records as to whether the State will accept checks or money orders and to whom they should be made payable. This same information would apply when marriage and divorce records are available from the State office.

For a copy of a report of a birth in a foreign country of a U.S. citizen, write to Passport Services, Correspondence Branch, U.S. Department of State, Washington, D.C. 20524. State the full name of the child at birth, date of birth, place of birth and names of parents. Also include any information about the U.S. passport on which the child's name was first included. Sign the request and state the relationship to the person whose record is being requested and the reason for the request, also what is the cost of the copy.

1. U.S. citizens who were born abroad and later naturalized or who were born in a foreign country to U.S. citizens may apply for a certificate of citizenship at the nearest office of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS).

More than 3 million people are injured seriously -- sometimes fatally -in home accidents every year. The victim's life often depends upon the speedy arrival of trained medical help.

The American College of Emergency Physicians suggests calling an ambulance when any of these symptoms occur: Pain or pressure in the chest or upper abdomen, difficulty in breathing, dizziness or faintness, sudden weakness or severe change in vision, severe or persistent vomiting, intense pain anywhere in the body or expressions of suicidal or homicidal feelings. To help families cope, the ACEP has prepared a free folder, "Home 'Organizer for Medical Emergencies." The folder contains advice on first - aid, plus consent - to treat forms, which may be required when children need treatment but parents are not there to grant permission. Some doctors won't treat a child without an approval from parents.
