So, thank SPJST for the great endurance, Of the SR who sold me life insurance. *** All local lodge officers, plus others who may be concerned, are reminded of the Orientation Seminar this Saturday, May 2nd at the Mary Hardin - Baylor University in Belton, Texas. This will be a very beneficial seminar for all who attend, rest assured, and you will benefit from attending and hearing the information first - hand. Your editor understands this will be a fraternal session of a question-- and - answer type. At any rate we are anticipating a huge representation. *** There are times when sitting down and gathering one's thoughts together and concentrating on an editorial to be written is harder to do than in other instances; that surely would be ascertained by any other user of a pen or pencil, be it editor, poet, author or writer. This happens to be one of those times, because this Saturday, April 25th at 10 a.m., we have to attend the funeral of Brother Johnnie Shimek of Schulenburg and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston and your editor's brother - in - law who was like a second brother to- yours truly.

Needless to say, our sincerest sympathy to his wife, Sister Edna Shimek (Maxine's Sefcik's sister), his sisters, brother and spouses. "Life comes and - - - - life leaves!" How true! May the soft breezes of a blissful peace flow over his grave for eternity!

He served his Country well during World War II in Italy in the Anzio Campaign. *** Last week the editor discussed the possibility of publishing a monthly issue of "Texas Polka News" issue.

This member has done quite a bit of research on this project and your editor will have more information on this to give you in the future as things develop and, if plans prove feasible.

We feel the idea would be welcome by many of our members and friends of various nationalities and ethnic groups; as stated above, when we receive the necessary information, we will publish same. *** In the Czech Section is a picture and write-up about the composer of Beer Barrel Polka - Czech name: "Skoda lasky". His name is Jaromir Vejvoda and he is 85 years of age in good health and lives in Czechoslovakia. Many of our readers, very likely, remember that this was General and later President Eisenhower's favorite song. The song

sold so many records and sheet music that Mr. Vejvoda's royalties amounted to over a million dollars, however, some legal technicality, stopped the payment to him - a pity! *** Employers who have illegal aliens as workers, take note: You are about to be drawn into your employees' struggle to stay in this country, like it or not. And it does not matter if you employ a lot of aliens in a hotel, restaurant or a construction company or just have one working in your home as a housekeeper or gardener.

Beginning May 5th, aliens who came here illegally before 1 January 1982 -perhaps as many as two - thirds of the nearly 7 million undocumented foreigners in the U.S. -- will be allowed to apply for amnesty under the new immigration - reform law. Employers will be asked to provide records, advice, even financial help. Effective June 1st, bosses must be able to show that they have required all workers hired after 6 November 1986, to provide proof of identity and work eligibility. Acceptable documents include passports, drivers' licenses and Social Security cards. Aliens who cannot produce such evidence may be deported. Employers do not have to check workers who were hired before November 6th. But they are liable for employees who arrived after that date.

For the first year, first offenders will get only a warning. But later, they could face up to six months in jail and $10,000 in fines.

Aliens have until 4 May 1988, to apply for amnesty at one of 108 offices of the Immigration and Naturalization Service being set up to process applications. Applicants must present evidence that they have been here the required time and that they have stable job records and are able to support themselves. Any sort of documentation -- tax forms, medical bills, school records -- will do. But amensty won't be cheap. INS plans to charge $185 for each adult applicant and $50 for each child, with a maximum of $420 per family.

Offering to help aliens through this labyrinth is an army of lawyers, counselors and community groups, including the Catholic Church and unions. Costs for these services can range form $100 per person for the community groups to thousands of dollars for a lawyer. Do not rush into hiring a lawyer, suggests INS, unless a case is particularly complicated.

Special care should be taken to steer clear of charlatans. Notaries public, for example, are considered powerful officials in Latin America, and some U.S. notaries are charging high fees for worthless services and advice. INS plans to send every employer detailed information on how to comply with the new law. Also, a toll - free hot line is scheduled to begin operation on May 1st. The phone number has yet to be announced. *** Planning to visit a national park this year? You may find it more expensive.

Congress has approved new or higher user fees at almost half of the nation's parks. It is the first increase in almost 15 years. The average hike is $2 to $5.

Maine's Acadia National Park, for example, was free, but there is now a fee of $5 per car or $2 per person. At Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, the old fee of $2 per car and 50 cents per person has been raised to $5 per car and $2 per person. Dear Members: Lodge Karel Jonas will honor Mother's Day with a special door prize in the May 3rd monthly meeting. The starting time will be 2 p.m. and the location is still the small office at 106 Leveridge Street. A standard "order of business" will be followed. The agenda will have the standing reports and any additional reports that may come up.

The social luncheon after the meeting, will be held upstairs in the hall. There may be something added to the tare by the lodge due to Mother's day.

A special guest was present for the monthly meeting on April 12th.

Brother Howard Leshikar, the Supreme Lodge President, accepted a longstanding invitation to attend one of our meetings. It was a great pleasure to have him present. Starting on time, the meeting went quickly through all reports which were accepted as given. With no business of major importance needing immediate attention, the meeting was turned over to Brother Leshikar. He gave a report on the pending laws and changes the Society is up against. In the report, he told us of the united front put together by our Society along with other organizations which fall into the same group known as "Fraternal Societies" to stop an unfavorable law. He urged us to continue the monthly meetings along with the luncheon social after the meeting. He added, in the future, we will have to hold more of these fraternal gatherings to comply with IRS guidelines. The importance of each member to the Society was stressed by him. causes in the community was also stressed by him. With no questions being asked, the meeting adjourned for the luncheon social upstairs.

The door prize from the lodge was won by Sister Aline Kortis. Another special prize, which was donated, was won by Mr. Anton Kelner, Jr. Three varieties of sandwiches were available at the starting end of the buffet table. One variety was furnished by the lodge and the other two were donated by two of the lodge sisters.

Another lodge sister donated cooked sausage. In addition to this there were cakes, candy and a poppyseed roll. To drink, there was coffee, soft drinks and the fixings for ice tea. This was all made possible by Sisters Srubar, Janik, Kortis, Hanzelka, Haverda, Nezval and Brother A.J. "Tony" Kelner. To the sisters and brothers who stayed to help with the clean up, this writer extends a special thanks.

This help helped everyone to get home a little sooner.

This writer wishes to again thank SL President Leshikar for coming down to see us and visit.

At this time, this writer wishes to extend the following comments on a question asked him a while back. The question was "Why should and what is the need for the Supreme Lodge officers to visit with local lodges?"

Here are some answers he has come up with: 1. It is true that it would be impossible for the Supreme Lodge officers to make all of the lodges but when a lodge may have some problems, or the morale of a lodge is low, their presence is a big help. It makes the lodge in question, especially those members who take the time to attend meetings, feel like they belong to the family and not being treated like the illegitimate child at the family reunion. Like one member put it, "They care we exist."

2. It is an incentive for members to attend the meetings.

3. It lets the local lodge members meet, see and talk to these people in person. They become real people and not just a name and picture in the "Vestnik " 4. We need these visits if we are to save the system! As Brother Leshikar said, "The power rests with the membership." It lets the local membership see who the delegates, they elect, elect to run our Society. We must remember that those chosen to lead our Society are placed there by delegates who, in turn, are placed into their position by the individual members of the lodge. Therefore, those chosen to lead are responsible to the membership as a whole. This was proven many times in previous conventions. Or, as some members said, "It seems that some delegates want to go to the convention to see and be seen, have a good time, go just for the monetary gain or in the delegate's mind, "They deserve to go because the lodge owes it to them."

5. For our Society to continue, our lodges have to be alive and working.

Insurance sales will not make it alone for it takes both the lodges and insurance to make us a Fraternal Insurance Society. The visits by Supreme Lodge officers, like Brothers Vanek and Gebala in the February meeting and now Brother Leshikar in the April meeting, boost the lodge morale and help this system along.

All in all, these visits did help or to paraphrase, "They do know we exist Charlie Brown!"

From Lodge 3 Victoria

The April 1 meeting was called to order by Vice President Adolf Motal in the absence of President Franklin Elles, who is on a month's tour of Germany and other countries.

Franklin and his wife, Lois, are visiting their daughter and son - in law, Darla and Mark Buccigrossi, who are stationed with the Air Force in Germany. Darla and the entire Elles family are members of Lodge No. 32.

Members planning to attend the May 2 SPJST Orientation in Belton include President Franklin Elles, Vice President Adolf Motal and wife.

Valeria, Secretary/Treasurer Ella Arnold, Michael Ahlstrom and Katherine Wokaty.

We are proud to have had our original SPJST Charter restored and a copy reproduced, which was very well done. It is a prized possession.

A memorial of $25 was given to the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas in memory of our departed member Edward W. Chamrad.

The District VI meeting held in Victoria on April 5 was a success.

More than 75 people attended and much was accomplished. Our member, Katherine Wokaty, was elected first vice president of District VI. Our next meeting will be held on May 6 at Citizens National Bank.

Lodge 35, Elk Meeting The April 12th meeting of Lodge No. 35 was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearers Jana Breitkreutz and Jessika Tierce.

The president then asked all the members to stand in a moment of silence for our departed Brother Holton Wills.

Minutes of our last meeting were read by Rosemary Banik and the treasurer's report was also given.

Youth Leader Louise Burney told about the Easter hats and the egg contest the youth made. Lodge 40 Plans Family Day Dear Readers: The regular monthly meeting was held on Monday, April 20, 1987 following the Bingo games.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order.

Youth Member Kim Kacal led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

A minute of silence was observed for our departed members, especially Emil Korenek who passed away over the weekend.

The minutes of our previous meeting held on March 16, 1987 were read and approved.

Second Vice President Dora Lee Kopecky reported on the progress of plans for our "Family Day" to be held on July 12, 1987.

Floyd Shimek, member of Building Committee, reported on bid received for repairs to building.

Our lodge welcomed twelve new members: Eugene Holub, Glenn Mat ula, Eugene Valigura, Blake Priesmeyer, Lane Priesmeyer, Dana Priesmeyer, Matthew Priesmeyer, Bettie Priesmeyer, Brent Irby, Amanda Rohan, Douglas Rohan and Russell Rohan.

President Vanek reported to the membership that Lodge El Campo Hillje No. 40 had accepted to host the District V I social on October 25, 1987.

On motion made, seconded and passed, the meeting adjourned.

66 Meeting & Easter Luncheon

Our April 12th meeting began with a covered dish meal being served at 1:30 p.m. Everyone present enjoyed it very much.

At 2:30 p.m., President Pauling called our meeting to order. Flag bearers presented the flags and Mike Warren led everyone in the pledge to the flag.

Secretary Bonnie Pruitt was absent due to illness. Hope you are feeling better now!

We had two visitors present; they were Chris Warren and Mark Roessler.

Sister Annie Hanus read the minutes of the previous meeting; they were approved.

Correspondence received was from SL President Leshikar sending some photos of the Straight Domino 1 ournament and thanking our lodge for sponsoring it. President Leshikar also sent his approval and thanks on the way our lodge donates to charitable organizations and its members.

Other correspondence concerned a directory for Senior Citizens needing someone to stay with them. The Home Office in Temple is in charge of this project. A special thank you was sent to the lodge from Rosemary Spence for the memorials to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund in honor of her father, Otto Hanus.

Minutes of the April 1st Board meeting were read. The time for dances will always be from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Sister Ruby Orsag reported that the Entertainment Committee donated the

food left over from the Domino Tournament to "Meals on Wheels."

They were very grateful. At the May meeting, we will have another casserole lunch served at 1:30 p.m. with the committee furnishing the dessert. There will also be a special drawing. This is in honor of all mothers present.

President Pauling acknowledged several people for all that work they had done at the lodge including the Entertainment Committee and Brother Frank Parma. These people go and do necessary tasks and do them simply for the sake of doing it, never expecting to receive any monetary value in return.

They should always be commended.

Fraternal Committee Chairman Jeanette Smith read a thank you from the Supreme Lodge for the donation to the Scholarship Fund. She also read a thank you from the Frank Leshikars.

Bingo Fund had $200 to give away this month. Recipients of $100 each were Angeline West and little Amanda allace, age 5.

I he Cheer Committee sent a get well card to Brother Frank Leshikar.

Sister Libbie Parma reported that Sister Rose Parma is doing much better. She gave the total amount of money in the Trust Fund. President Panting presented her a $50 check to add to the fund.

The Audit Committee reported that all books are in good order. Members on the committee are Johnnie Gaidusek, Irene Mueller and Cory Pruitt. Our bookkeeper, George Shilling, also gave his report: New members accepted were Ronald Shipp, Judy Shipp, Henrietta Barton, Jennifer Veselka, Michael Heussner and Douglas A. Volcik.

Winners of the local "42" Tournament were Weldon and Rosie Gaiter. Second place winners were Cory and Bonnie Pruitt with third going to Otis and Emma Ceska. Mrs. (Jailer reported that everyone also enjoyed the State Tourney.

President Panting reported on the State Straight 1 ournament. He reported that there were some real stiff competitors.

Everyone was reminded to be sure and attend the District III spring meeting at Elk on May 3rd; also, that all officers wishing to attend the special orientation on May 2nd in Belton should sign up.

Our youth leader reported that the youth club has adopted the Bellmead Nursing Home and will be doing different things for its occupants. On May 9th, the youth will get together to make corsages for the ladies in the rest home. Also, all forms were handed out for summer camp and YAD. Please complete all forms as soon as possible and return to Gladys Yates. Sister Yates thanked Sister Parma and the Crust Fund for donating the money to purchase Easter candy for the egg hunt. Door prize winners were Justin Engelke and Jared Smith.

On the tie vote concerning Direct Billing, it will be dead until the topic is brought up again. This is due to the fact that the president of a lodge has the option to vote or not to vote in case of a tie. There was other discussion concerning this matter.

Under new business, Brother Jim Locke stated that May 16th has been scheduled as a work day. Anyone able to help should try to be there at 8 a.m. or as soon as possible.

Our door prize winner was Sister Bertha Newman. We had 62 members present.

Flag bearers were asked to retire the flags.

80, Holland Approved Donations Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Our regular monthly meeting of Lodge 80 for the month of April was held on Sunday, April 5th. The meeting was called to order by President Bohac at 2 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance to our flag was recited by the 26 members present.

The president requested the members to remain standing for a moment of silent tribute to our deceased members.

All the officers of our lodge were present.

Next order of business was the reading of the minutes of our March 1987 meeting. They were accepted as read by Secretary Latham.

Correspondence including thank you cards from the Felix Biels and Rudy Grossman families for the flowers sent for the funerals for the above - mentioned members' names of our lodge, also a thank you from R. Kurtz.

It was voted to donate $50 to the Little League Team in Holland, $25 to the Brownie Troop in Holland and also $25 to the Girls Scouts in Holland.

The District II meeting which was held at Lovelady was discussed and all the members of our lodge who attended expressed having a wonderful time at the meeting and the fine hospitality of the host Lodge No. 74.

Our lodge and District 11 president reported there were 251 members present at the meeting.

It was voted to accept a new member to our lodge, Paula Umberhagan.

Additional insurance was taken by Latius Prikryl, Bill Umberhagan and Darrell Gommert.

At our April meeting our president gave out some forms sent to him from the Supreme Lodge concerning how we could improve the attendance of the members at our lodge meetings. Please fill this form with your suggestions and bring it to the next meeting. I would like to dwell just a little concerning the attendance of the members of our lodge to our meetings and the officers in charge. Our attendance to the meeting has been improving lately, but not as much as your officers would like to see improved, so you members out there (some live locally close by) come and enjoy a good meeting. A "Happy Hour" always follows after the meeting (free drinks) and some times a lunch (svacina) is served. So come out and see what we are doing here at Lodge 80. That date is every first Sunday of the month.

We have a good group of officers.

Take, for instance, our President D.I. Bohac; he is a likable person who is also president of District II of our SPJST. We always like to listen to his comments. He really takes care of everything here at our hall. It's quite a job he is doing. Thank you, D.I. Then we have our newly - elected Vice President Brother Jerry Massar, a young man with lots of ability and great help here at our social functions, and our Financial Secretary Sister Glenda Liles who is a very capable

officer with a great personality. We are proud of you for the great work you are doing, Glenda. Now, we come to our Recording Secretary Glen Latham.

Folks, I don't know what we would do without Glen here at our lodge who keeps us all posted on everything and keeps a good record of all our proceedings. Glen, you are doing a great job. We, the members of Lodge 80, want to thank you, also.

It wouldn't be right to leave out some individuals of our lodge and that is the Pajestka family; Frank, Sr., Helen and Frankie, Jr., who have charge of the kitchen that they have maintained for several years now and great work they are doing. For this service, we, the members of Lodge 80 are very grateful.

At our April meeting we discussed having a fund - raising social on Sunday, May 10th. We will have an old - fashioned barbecue beef (preferably hindquarters) and chicken/sausage cooked on our spacious barbecue pit. The meat will be ready to go at 11 a.m. Plates will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Regular Bingo will start at 1:30 p.m., special games of all kinds, cakes, pies and kolache will be for sale.

Probably, we will also have a cake walk. So mark the above date on our calendar and come to spend an enjoyable evening.

Birthday prizes were given to Darvin Ivicic and Tina Benner, who have birthdays in April.

Drawing ticket winners were Louise Ivicic, Adell Horelica, H. Balusek, Harold Rhode and Isabel! Kunz.

Before I end this letter, I would like to leave you with this thought: There were two fair maidens staying together. They were always afraid to go out to have a good time because they were afraid of males (men). They also had a female cat and they kept her closed up, because they were afraid she would get involved with some tom cats. Eventually, one of the fair maidens got married and left on her honeymoon. In a few days the maiden at home got a card from the honeymooners. The only thing that was written on the card was: "Turn the cat out!" So if you have a kitty penned up, turn her out.

Dear Members: Sister Gerlich led all present for the monthly meeting in the pledge to our flag.

A moment of silence was observed for a departed member, Brother Alex Kozlovsky.

Secretary Salac read the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved.

Correspondence included Brother and Sister Chas. Prasifka's thank you note, a letter from the Supreme Lodge, Czech Educational Foundation, City of Dallas, International Polkafest, and Caldwell Kolace Festival.

The following committees reported: President Cheri Petr for Entertainment; she also reported on the Entertainment meeting discussing the Czechfest to be held on September 13th with booths, dinner, etc. More on the details later.

The custodian situation was also solved and Brother Edwin and Sister Annie Petr were welcomed back.

House Committee -- Brother Salac sealed off the concrete slab where water was drifting in and mowed and cleaned parking lots with the help of Sister Salac and Brother Joe Tedlaska.

Decorating Committee -- No Report.

Special Committee thanked Rudolph's Market for use of market to hold sale, also for help to those who helped bake and donate and to Sister Bessie and Brother Emil Petr for use of equipment and space for baking.

Youth Report -- Sister Bessie Petr reported the youth met on Saturday, April 18th before the Easter Party and got started at the Lakewood Park.

Also, remember July 18th -Princess Ball and bring donations.

Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council met on April 21st at the Czech Club.

Czech Culture Society report by Sister Petr -- June 29th at SPJST Lodge No. 84 is our meeting date.

Lodge Coordinator Ida Schultz reported on dues that have been sent and also a fun - night to benefit the Czech Educational Foundation is being planned for Friday, June 12th.

The menu is in the planning stage and also the games and the time around 7 p.m.

New applicants on additional insurance for April are Whitney Rejcek, Mike Katz, Vicky Katz, Jessica Frith, Lisa Reznik and Stephen Reznik. Welcome! Welcome also to a transferee, Brother Stanley Patak to our lodge.

Lodge 87 To Honor Members SPJST Lodge No. 87 of Temple met Friday evening, April 10th at 7 p.m. with President Ladis Navratil presiding.

The meeting was called to order.

Lad Zatopek led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Silent tribute was paid to deceased member Millie Jez. Officers gave their various reports, also old and new business topics were discussed.

The following 50 - year members will be honored at the Friday, May 8th meeting, namely, Tillie Blum, Annie Chupik, Henry Chupik, Leonard Hurta, George Schiller and Jerry Valchar. A covered dish meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. Members are to bring vegetables or salad and dessert for family and guests. The lodge will furnish barbecue chicken and sausage, bread and beverages.

Special get well wishes are extended to member Wallace Bartek and all who are convalescing.

Millie Schiller was a guest for the April meeting.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Al Pierson dance held on April 11th and the Knights of Dixie Orchestra which played on April 18th were enjoyed by the members and guests in attendance.

Congratulations to Brother Alvin and Sister Janet Raymond on the birth of their great - grandson, Frank Anthony Tamborello, who was born on April 6th at Methodist Hospital.

Proud parents are Don and Annette Tamborello.

The monthly meeting held on April 13th was well attended. It was announced that 50 - year members will be honored at the next monthly meeting to be held on Monday, May 11th.

Brothers Charles Veit and Perry Seeberger placed third in the Straight Domino Tournament at the state level and Brothers Adolph Jurica and Johnny Barcak placed third in the state "42" Tournament.

The Blue Room party will be held on Sunday, May 3rd from 4 to 9 p.m.

Tickets will be available in the lodge office for $10 per person until April 30th. Admission includes cocktails, dinner and dancing to the music of the Central Texas Sounds.

The Men's Club will sponsor a dance to be held on Friday, July 10th to benefit the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas. The Central Texas Sounds will play for the dance and donations are $5 per person.

The Czech play performed in Schulenburg on Sunday, April 12th was enjoyed by a capacity crowd. The Dramatic Club plans to present another play in the fall. On Monday, May 4th, the Dramatic Club will meet to discuss their plans for the future.

The Choral Club and the Czech Concert Orchestra will be performing at the Czech Fest in Rosenberg on Saturday, May 2nd.

Sister Minnie Bravenec is recuperating at home and Sister Ruby Cernosek is in Doctors' Hospital.

Sister Bernice Wahlberg attended the April monthly meeting and her return to the lodge was welcomed by our members. A speedy recovery is wished to our sick members.

The April meeting of SPJST Lodge 133 was held on April 12, 1987 at 2:15 p.m. at the St. Margaret Mary Activity Center. President Anthony Trilicek led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and we held a moment of silence for all deceased members of the lodge.

He then thanked Brother Dominic Netek, chairman of the 70th anniversary celebration, and all members who helped make the celebration a success.

President Anthony Trilicek then invited any interested members to attend the seminar to be held in Belton, Texas on May 2nd. Those interested in attending at the time included President Trilicek, Vice President Bill Mares, Secretary Jarolyn Popp and members Dominic Netek and Emil Matula.

Pictures taken by Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar at the 70th anniversary celebration were displayed. Members were invited to view them. President Trilicek asked Mrs. Marcella Kleprlik to put them in the scrapbook. He also thanked her for her work on the scrapbook to date.

Members celebrating their birthdays in April included Brothers Emil Matula and George Schultz and Sister Julia Sefcik. Split the pot was won by Don Netek and William Pavliska.

Attendance prize winners were: 1st -- Don Netek 2nd Leora Uribe 3rd -- Marie Netek 4th -- Lucille Dlugosh A motion was then made by Sister Viola Fajkus and seconded by Sister Mary Kotelnik that the meeting be adjourned. The members then enjoyed refreshments and a games party.

The minutes were read and approved. Correspondence was then read congratulating the lodge on their participation in the various domino tournaments. President Trilicek then thanked Brothers Joe Styrk, Emil Matula, Alvin Schimcek and Sister Frances Schimcek for their participation. The treasurer's report, which followed, was approved; Applications for social membership were made by Bessie Sliva, William Pavliska and Gertrude Pavliska. They were welcomed by the president.

Brother Emil Matula then suggested that social members might consider purchasing annuities to become voting members of the lodge.

For You Dear Members of Lodge 88: The Men's Club of Lodge 88 is asking the membership and friends of the SPJST Society to join us in a benefit dance that the Men's Club is sponsoring to support the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT). The event will be held at Lodge 88 in the Chandelier Ballroom on Friday, July 10, 1987. The renowned "Central Texas Sounds" (formally The Ellinger Combo) will be playing for the benefit occasion. Friendship Club 0 Ft. Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: The meeting was called to order at 10:50 a.m. by President Maria Tesar with 35 members present and guests Margaret Laymance, Carrie Ann Cleveland and John Barlow.

The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag.

The minutes and the treasurer's report of the March meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence read was a thank you note from the Peters. family. It was good seeing Roberta Peters after she had a several months' stay in the hospital. We are also sorry that she fell and broke her arm after coming home from the hospital.

We express get well wishes to member Gertrude Johnston, who is in St. Joseph's Hospital in Ft. Worth.

Also get well wishes go to Mr. August Kubecka of Shiner, who fell and broke his hip.

There will be no hostesses for the May 6th meeting since the members will be treating themselves to dinner at Furr's Cafeteria, 3222 Alta Mere Dr., Ft. Worth.

Those interested in a car pool to the cafeteria should be at the church parking lot by 10:25 a.m., because the cars will depart at 10:30 a.m. Tables will be in a group section at the cafeteria. After eating, those who wish to play games will return to the church social center.

A beautiful artificial flower arrangement was donated by Bessie Brizina for the door prize. The lucky winner was Ima Lou La Plant.

The birthday members were Alice Morley, Alene Kercho, Joyce Tesar, Gertrude Johnston and Lydia Alholm.

Birthday wishes were expressed through song.

On Easter Sunday, April 19th, the annual picnic here, on the farm, was well attended by many SPJST lodge and Sokol members and mutual friends. At the same time a celebration was taking place in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Our son, Tony, was celebrating his 37th birthday. It is too bad that the miles make it so far apart.

I he sun was setting in the west and the activities continued but, by dusk, the members of each family located each other, returned to their cars and headed for home. From all reports everyone arrived at their homes safely and that was our main concern after a happy day.

The April 2nd meeting was called to order by President Zvolanek. After the pledge to the flag, a moment of silence was held for Edwin Laznovsky, brother of Sister Libby Smith.

Guests introduced were Frank Noska, Roy Alholm, Phil Reames, John Trojacek, Gilbert Kalich, Frank Houzvicka, Julius Podhrasky, Arnold Vrla and little Jessica.

Minutes of the March meeting were read by Secretary Alice Roberts and Treasurer Vicki Kohn gave her report.

Bessie Reames reported on the Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council and the Czech Cultural Society. The WFLA Kolache Festival was announced by President Zvolanek.

Bertha Podhrasky announced that Valdimar and Olga Matuska (from Czechoslovakia) will be performing at the Sokol Hall in Dallas on April 22nd.

She also stated the Southern District Sokol is compiling a cookbook and is in need of old - fashioned Czech recipes.

Evelyn Salac announced a bake sale at Rudolph's Market on April 11th; the SPJST Lodge No. 84 is putting on the sale.

Bertha Podhrasky is compiling a scrapbook for the Czech Cultural Society. She needs photos taken on Czech Day last October during the Sesquicentennial Celebration.

We discussed our monthly luncheons and whether to continue covered dishes or change to sandwiches or just coffee and pastries.

Bertha Podhrasky made a motion to continue covered dishes. Motion was seconded and passed.

We also discussed printing a new Year Book; Bessie Kalich agreed to take care of this project.

Nominating Commit tee Chairwoman Liddie Pavelka took over at this point of our meeting to conduct election of officers. The slate of officers for year 1987 - 88 are: President -- Anne Zvolanek, Vice President -- Bertha Podhrasky, Recording Secretary -- Mary Sebestik, Treasurer Vicki Kohn, Correspondence Secretary -- Helen Vrla, Jr., and Membership -- Bertha Malik.

President Lvolanek will appoint the committees later.

Bessie Kalich did volunteer to be hostess chairwoman.

We discussed going to visit the Ladies' Circle in Ft. Worth. We decided to go in July.

We were invited to participate in the Texas Cultural Exposition of Richardson, Texas. We voted not to participate.

Sister Millie Noska suggested we should do something to remember our shut - in sisters in nursing homes, etc.

Anne Zvolanek and Liddie Pavelka will attend to this matter. Easter cards will be mailed to these sisters.

Helen Vrla, Jr. will engage a speaker for one of our meetings. We left the selection to her.

Vicki Kohn will check out several banks and decide which one to move our account to.

One cake was made by Sister Bertha Podhrasky and the other cake was compliments of Sister Rose Kopecek's brother and sister - in - law, Jerry and Nita Rotrekle. "Happy Birthday" was sung to all celebrants.

Door prizes this month were brought by Mary Kubacak, Rose Kopecek and Sidney Skotak.

The winners were Bessie Reames, Evelyn Trojacek and Bertha Podhrasky.

Sisters, do remember to bring a covered dish to the May 7 meeting.

Now with Easter already passed and a new month upon us, our thoughts turn to summer and the hot days ahead. Do we enjoy winter better when we think about the torrid heat possibly ahead of us? 1, for one, enjoy the warmer days.

It seems easier to keep cooler than warmer. That subject is debatable, but it you are cold natured, you'll welcome summer.

Now we have a new mayor here in Dallas, and for the first time, a woman. We are on the way to someday, in the not - too - distant future, seeing a first time woman President.

Where are all these men who once said it never could happen?

The Harris County Czech Heritage Society had a fair turnout of 36 people for the workshop of Genealogy and researching many aspects of family history. This was held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Dayton - Crosby Road.

President Victor Peter conducted the brief business meeting. Treasurer's report and the number of members in the county chapter were given by Lillian Young.

Mrs. Jerri Gruber ga‘e a report of the last executive meeting and gave a healthy review on how her family had a reunion meeting of about 400 kin.

Vice President Attorney Hrna gave a report on the many aspects of family objectives that the Czech people of I exas can participate in, such as Czechs in Professions, Histories, Pioneer Czechs, Early Czech Schools, Czech Soldiers in War and Czech Bands.

Vice President Raymond Skrabanek gave a brief talk on writing family histories and notes to keep up with.

Mrs. Helen Tepera of Crosby was installed as one of the vice presidents of Harris County Czech Heritage Society serving that area.

State Officer Albert Blaha gave a report on how to secure information on Czech family history from Czechoslovakia. Mr. Blaha also had several books that people could work on.

Mrs. Justine Svoboda gave a report on securing cemetery information for family records.

MAY VESTNIK PROJECT Dear Youth Club Members: The following is a story of actual facts of how the SPJST began. Read it and answer the following questions and earn up to 20 points.On December 28, 1896, twenty - five Czech - Texans gathered in the court house in La Grange in Fayette County for the purpose of establishing a separate and new fraternal benefit insurance society. The only public notice about this meeting appeared in "Svoboda," one of the few, if not only, Czech publications of that day

and time, and published by Augustin Haidusek, who was also a great backer of the idea. The minutes taken at this first meeting were written in the usual brief and concise style of J.R. Kubena, who was later to become secretary of the new society and serve in that capacity for 40 years. The minutes read as follows: "On December 28, 1896, twenty - five Czechoslovaks met in La Grange, Texas, for the purpose of organizing a new benevolent society in the State of Texas. After some discussion, a- three - member committee was elected to draw up a set of bylaws for the new organization.

The committee elected consisted of J.R. Kubena, A. Haidusek, and F. Cihal. Mr. Haidusek later gave up the job and L.V. Vanek was named to this committee. The committee drew up a set of bylaws and called for a convention of delegates from all lodges interested in joining the new organization to meet in La Grange on June 20, 1897.

In March of 1897, the Supreme Lodge of the CSPS in Cleveland, Ohio, was notified of the action taken and being taken, by the Texas lodges.

The first convention was held in La Grange, as planned, on June 20, 1897.

Delegates present represented 22 lodges (although Lodges No. 23, 24 and 25 were not represented at this first convention, they did join the Order by July. 1st and they are considered charter lodges of the SPJST).

The first convention was opened by Engelbert Pollach of the New Tabor lodge. As first permanent chairman, they elected I.J. Gallia, and J.R. Kubena as secretary. Jan Michal was elected vice chairman. One of the first items discussed was that July 1st of that year (1897) be agreed upon as the date the new organization started doing business. An effort to make it July 15th was defeated.

In electing officers of the main lodge (Supreme Lodge) the first convention elected I.J. Gallia as the first president for the next two years, Fred Breska as vice president, and J.R. Kubena as secretary/treasurer. Jan Michal, Josef Kopecky, Josef Hodanek, and Frank Dusek were elected to the Auditing Committee. The only paid officer was the secretary/treasurer whose salary was set at $300 per year, his bond at $1,000. A motion to hold open meetings was defeated.

1.J. Gallia, J.R. Kubena, and L.V. Vanek were designated to draw up a charter for the new organization. Here it is interesting to note, for the first time, the appearance of the name of the new organization "Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas" -(SPJST) Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. It appears as Article I of the charter drawn up by these three men. Who actually thought up the name, is not known, and there is no written record as to just how the name was conceived.

The charter was drawn up and submitted to then Secretary of the State J.W. Madden on July 10, 1897.

It was approved by him on August 12, 1897.

It should also be noted that July 1, 1897, the membership in the new SPJST consisted of 507 men and 375 women, a total of 882 charter members. The idea of a separate and independent Texas - based fraternal order had really caught fire and most Texas Czechs were eager to join.

The SPJST has held 24 conventions since its beginning. The next convention will be in--June, 1988 at Temple, Texas. ***

Lodge 84 Hosts District III YLS' Class District III youth leaders' training class was held in Dallas, Texas at Lodge 84 on March 29th.

In spite of the snowy weather the class was well attended. I am proud of all who traveled the distance in the beautiful snow and I am also glad you all made it home safely.

Let's not forget the deadline! Camp forms are due by May 12th; camp dates are June 23rd through 26th.

District III will be held in Burleson at Lodge No. 180.

Lodge 88 YC Held Bake Sale Dear Brothers and Sisters, The monthly meeting for Lodge 88 Youth Club of Houston was held on Thursday, April 16, 1987 along with the youth club bake sale. Our Easter Bunny cakes were made by youth club members and were judged for money prizes.

During the meeting, Youth Achievment Day entry cards were distributed to those members who wish to participate. We also discussed our plans for Splash Day, which will be on June 7, 1987.

The previous weekend, April 11, we celebrated Easter with an Easter egg hunt for younger youth club members.

Our next meeting will be held on May 14 when we elect our new youth club officers and have our bake sale.

Please be sure to come to this important meeting. I hope to see you all there!

This group attended District 111 Youth Leaders' Training Class on March 29th.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The April 8, 1987 meeting of Lodge No. 79 Youth Club was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Stephanie Rebecek.

Reporter Christina Kubala, Michael Kubala and Tiffany Rambo led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. The members remained standing for a moment of silence.

The register was read. There were 10 members present and two adults.

Minutes were read and approved.

Charlie Majek gave the treasurer's report and the balance was good.

Fund-raising plans for this month are handmade pins. This month's social will be a skating party at Gulf Skating on a date to be held in the near future. The charity project for this month will be discussed later.

Youth Leader Mrs. Kay Majek reported summer camp; Astroworld, gaining new members, and for our members to stay active and she discussed fun activities.

Our next youth club meeting will be on May 13 at 7 p.m. at the SPJST/Sokol Hall.

Dear Readers, We had our Easter Party on April 11, 1987. There were 13 members and 2 guests present. We all had a good time.

Our youth club meeting was held on April 16th and after the meeting we had our bake sale and we sold Bunny cakes.

They were judged and the winners were: (Ages 6 to 9) -- 1st place, Jamie Meyer; 2nd place, Matthew Mabry; 3rd place, Jason Swint.

(Ages 10 - 12) -- 1st place, Cindy Groendes; 2nd place, Melissa Havemann; 3rd place, Melissa Flores.

Winners in the 13 - 16 ages: 1st place -- Crystal Wallace, 2nd place, Shawn Roznovsky; 3rd place, Brian Havemann.

We made $117.69 selling cakes.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge Needville No. 81 on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of JOHN KOSSA, who passed away Sunday, March 22, 1987 at his residence. He was 80 years old.

Mr. Kossa was born on August 8, 1906 in Ammansville, Texas.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 25 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Needville with Father Ludon Angelle as principal celebrant and Father Eugene Heyck, CSB, and Father Kevin Thissen, OP, co- - celebrants. Interment was at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg.

Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Flaherty of Houston, Beatrice Guidry of Page, Arizona and Marie Sharp of The Meadows; two sisters, Mary Cernoch of Galveston and Hattie Mazoch of Rosenberg; a brother, Retired Col. Frank Kossa of 11 Indiana; Jeffersonville, two great grandchildren; grandchildren.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister MARY RABEL, who passed away on Monday, March 30, 1987, in the Stevens Convalescent Center at age 79 years.

She was born on May 6, 1907 in Lavaca County, Texas. She married Joe Rabel on May 9, 1925 in Hallettsville. He preceded her in death on March 2, 1983.

Sister Rabel was a member of the Sacred Heart Church.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1 at Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. Gabriel Maison officiating. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Surviving are two sons, Alphonse C. Rabel and Marvin E. Rabel, both of Houston; a sister; a brother; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mrs. Krupa was born September 28, 1901 in Elk, Texas. She was married to Otto Krupa, who died April 14, 1958.

MSU Accepts Joshua Youth Janek signed the papers to play basketball at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls on April 14, 1987.

Witnessing the signing were Joshua Basketball Coach Bob Fincher and Brad's parents, Jerry and Karen Janek of Joshua.

Brad averaged 13.7 points and 9.2 rebounds his senior year at Joshua. He was named to the South Zone 4 - 4A All District Team while maintaining a 97.32 grade point average. He is a member of the National Honor Society.

Brad's father, Jerry Janek, a 1959 West High School graduate, attended college on a four - year basketball scholarship at Decatur Baptist Junior College and UT at Arlington, Texas.

Brad is the grandson of the late Frank and Wilma Janek of West.

Of Interes, Getting Involved: Planning Activities For The Bicentennial [A continuation from January 14, 1987 issue -- Editor] THE BICENTENNIAL IN THE MEDIA The Constitution in the Press.

Newspapers and magazines everywhere can offer stories on the Bicentennial. Feature articles might be prepared by members of the commissions, with news stories covering upcoming events in the area.

The Constitution on Radio and Television. Local television and radio stations might feature brief segments on the history and the meaning of the Constitution. In addition, newscasts could notify the public of upcoming events, cover local activities and carry short features on interesting aspects of the Bicentennial.

Constitution Avenue. Communities throughout the nation could plan to rededicate a street in the area with a new name commemorating the Bicentennial of the Constitution. Some examples: Freedom Lane, Constitution Boulevard;, Madsion Place, First Amendment Street and Justice Avenue.

Library Projects. Libraries can provide exhibitions on the origins of the Constitution, featuring books such as The Federalist papers and Miracle at Philadelphia.

Special Exhibits at Galleries and Museums. While national museums plan special exhibits for the Bicentennial, smaller museums can do the same, focusing on regional and local interests in the Bicentennial.

Some of these could be directed at children. Museums could offer exhibits to help teach children about patriotism and citizenship in America.

State and local artists could donate commemorative works to galleries in heir region.

Soapbox Oratory. As freedom of speech is one of the best - known elements of the Constitution, local officials could allow a special section of a city park to be used as a

Speakers' Bureau. A local or statewide speakers' bureau could be maintained by a commission in preparation for a variety of Bicentennial events. The range of guest speakers might include state legislators, constitutional scholars and lawyers, judges and even storytellers.

Private and Individual Initiatives Famous Bicentennial Figures.

Individuals in the community, such as actors and historians, can dress as famous early American heroes -George Washington, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton -- and visit children's schools and hospitals to educate them on the origins of the Constitution and the federal government from a "first - person" perspective.

Historic Talks and Walks.

Historical associations and other private organizations can open historic homes to small groups with a local scholar discussing various aspects of the Constitution and the origins of our nation. Or local authorities can, with the assistance of private groups, guide the public on historic walks through old neighborhoods, homes and businesses. In some states, organizations could help bus people to a historic district for this purpose.

Bicentennial Cook - Off. The cook off -- an American tradition often held at picnics -- can be organized to include 18th and 19th Century recipes.

Actors' Theater. Local actors' groups could stage dramatic vignettes for the public in parks and theaters.

Bicentennial Sporting Events.

Special commemorative sporting events, such as track - and - field competitions and baseball games, can be held in conjunction with other Bicentennial celebrations.

The Constitution in Every Classroom. A quarter of the American population is involved in some level of education -- from school children to faculty at major universities. Efforts should be made to provide special materials on the Constitution for every classroom. In addition, contests, exhibits and performances commemorating the Constitution and the creation of our federal government can be held at local and state levels.

(The National Commission can direct you to sources of constitutional curricular materials and organized writing and oratory competitions.)

Teachers' Seminars. Seminars for secondary school teachers could be held at local college campuses to help them in teaching their students about the Constitution, its origins, the system of checks and balances it provides us and the significance of that system in our history.

The Constitution in Every Pocket.

Local organizations could print pocket - size Constitutions for the general public and distribute them at any group function held to commemorate the Bicentennial.

Constitutional Question Contests.

Question - and - answer quizzes on the Constitution could be the basis for local contests sponsored by newspapers, businesses and civic groups.

In addition, the Bicentennial could be noted at: Annual Events. Local commissions can take advantage of annually scheduled events by dedicating them to the Bicentennial. Tennis Tournaments, boat shows, all - star games, horse

shows and many other events which are already planned can be used as much to remind the public df the upcoming anniversary as to commemorate the date.

Other Holidays. As the Bicentennial approaches, communities can help prepare for, it by starting the celebration during earlier holidays.

For example, in parades and community gatherings on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Flag Day and Labor Day, citizens can dress in early American styles and distribute information about the Constitution.

Local leaders can discuss the anniversary in public addresses, and information booths on the Bicentennial can be set up at local fairs.

Coping With Grief

By Jack L. Bodden, Ph.D. Grief (or bereavement) is one of life's inevitables; if you live long enough, you'll experience it Not only is the grief experience inevitable, but also it is a natural part of life. Grief is the psychological healing process that follows an important loss.

Like many of the unpleasant things of life, most of us try to insulate ourselves from the pain of grief, and this is almost surely a mistake. The sorrow of grieving is the "other side of the coin" from joy and happiness.

Each emotion limits and helps define its opposite, just as death helps define and give meaning to life. Hence, to try to numb the experience of sorrow is to impair our capacity to experience joy.

Grief is a normal response to loss, and the loss may be of many kinds, some obvious (e.g. death of a loved one) and some less obvious (moving to a new city). Unlike depression, which it resembles, grief goes through predictable phases. There are at least three discernible phases: (1) shock and denial, (2) depression and anger, and (3) understanding, acceptance, and reconstruction.

The immediate response to an important loss is shock. While in shock, the person's awareness of his/her surroundings is dulled. After a relatively brief time, the shock gives way to denial. Denial involves a refusal to admit an experience into consciousness. It is characterized by statements like, "I can't believe she is gone" or efforts intended to keep things just as they were before the loss/separation.

After several days, denial begins to crumble and reality seeps in, resulting in intense sadness. Denail and depression may seem to alternate for days or even weeks. During this second phase, anger usually emerges, often to the surprise of the bereaved.

Gradually over many weeks or months, a sense of acceptance of the loss and change begins to displace the sorrow. Acceptance sets the stage for change in the self perceptions and habits of the bereaved. This may take quite some time to accomplish, especially if the role or relationship was a long standing one. In truth, it isn't possible to say how long the total grieving process takes. Studies have shown that it may take two years; some would argue that we never really "get over" certain losses.

In my work as a psychologist I have found that there are some things we can do to increase our chances of surviving bereavement with minimal psychological scarring. For instance, the bereaved should NOT fight or resist his/her painful feelings. It is paradox that the harder we resist those feelings the more powerful they become. Important decisions should be held to a minimum or postponed.

Sticking to a daily schedule helps.

Accepting social and emotional support is very important in the recovery process and may even help protect the bereaved from the other undesirable consequences (e.g. physical illness). Expression of feelings by talking or by writing them down usually facilitates healing. Regular physical exercise and good nutrition are important.

Just as every cloud is supposed to have a silver lining, grief holds the potential for fostering personal growth. The loss and crisis which trigger the grief response also exert a "destabilizing" influence on our habits and attitudes. Hence, it helps

make people open to change (even if they really don't choose it). For example, people can learn to be more compassionate by virtue of having received compassion. We may also learn that time and relationships are precious and should not be taken for granted.

Finally, it helps if we can remember that change is the way of life. For the most part we cannot resist change (e.g. growing older), so it makes good sense to move with the flow of life, finding new meanings and satisfactions wherever the journey takes us. At the same time, our past has helped to shape us and our present; it has enriched our lives and shouldn't be forgotten or discarded.

Dental Care Starts Early

When should a child's dental care begin?

"Shortly after birth," said Scott and White Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Stephen K. Brandt, assistant professor of pediatrics and surgery at 1 exas A&M University College of Medicine.

A new mother should begin going over her baby's gums with a finger wash cloth made for this purpose on a daily basis soon after the baby is born.

Doing so keeps the mouth clean and begins a good daily habit.

When baby teeth begin to emerge at about six months, parents should add a small amount of toothpaste to the cloth or to a small toothbrush. There should be just enough toothpaste to loam slightly but not so much that the child could swallow it. Any good fluoride toothpaste will work.

Generally, parents will have to assist their children with brushing their teeth until about age four. At four, most children will want to brush their own teeth. Parents should continue to monitor the situation, however, because most preschool children lack the hand coordination to do a very good job. A child should not floss his own teeth until about seven or eight.

Clumsy attempts to floss teeth can damage gums.

Beginning a child's daily dental routine at a very early age helps prevent the apprehension that commonly occurs when parents attempt to brush their child's teeth.

"Many mothers tell me that they try to brush their child's teeth but that the child won't let them," said Dr. Brandt. "I give parents tips about brushing their child's teeth at the child's first dental appointment, which should be at about age two."

Pediatricians have traditionally suggested that routine visits to the dentist should begin at age three, but Dr. Brandt says that he sometimes sees cavities and other dental problems that could have been prevented if the child had been seen a year earlier.

One dental problem that may be prevented during early childhood is fluorosis, whitish or brownish spots that form on the permanent teeth before they emerge. Fluorosis is common in Central Texas because many water supplies in the area are naturally high in fluoride.

Fluoridated water is generally good for teeth. People who live in areas with fluoridated water have fewer cavities than people who do not. However, drinking highly fluoridated water during the early years of childhood before permanent teeth emerge may cause fluorosis. Lekce Tifinacti Lesson No. 13 Accent (stress) and Intonation In this lesson, we will discuss some rules and guides to speaking correct Czech, and using stress and intonation.

1. In Czech, the accent is invariably on the first syllable:— PRA-ce, SKAkat, SKO-la.

2. In the case of 3 or more syllables, there is a secondary, accent on the 3rd syllable: PRA-co-VA-ti, VIDE-la VA ti, ZA-palo-VA-ti.

3. One syllable prepositions form one single unit with the word following, and are always accented: Do Prahy (doprahy), po valce (povalce).

4. If the preposition consists of only one consonant, v, z, s, k— it must be joined in a single sound with the word following k yam kvam— (not ke yam): V Novem Yorku (not ye Novem Yorku).

5. Before other groups of consonants these prepositions are said in full and accented: VE stfedu, KE mne, SE mnou, ZE gkoly.

6. Prepositions are pronounced in full if the word following begins with the same sound: VE Vidni, KE kostelu, SE sestrou, ZE zeme. The reason for this is because double consonants are pronounced as single consonants in Czech: (Anna, cennV). A double vv or double kk are not pronounceable.

However, in a word like nejjemnejgi, the two j's are separated because nej is a superlative prefix. More on superlatives later.

7. Although the accent is always on the first syllable, it does not lengthen a short vowel following it, and we must not yield to the temptation to STRESS long vowels outside the first syllable.

The length or shortness of a vowel has no bearing on the stress.

8. Stress is not as strongly marked in Czech as in English, German, or Russian. The intonation (melody of the speech— its "musicalness"), that is, the rise and fall in the pitch of the voice, is not made up from as many tunes and patterns as in the above 3 languages. The voice does not rise to as high a pitch, nor does it fall low as readily as in the above languages. In these respects, the Czech language, may be said to be rather "flat" and monotone in character.

9. The outstanding feature of Czech speech is the contrast between long and short vowels, alternating in succession, giving it a rather staccato character.

Zadali me, abych se dostavil do redakce a pfinesl skladbu rozepsanou pro smyece a dechoN4 7 orchestr. V nakladatelstvi me seznamili s textafem Vaclavem Zemanem, kter pod noty me polky napsal slova a skladbu pojmenoval Skoda lasky. V teto podobe vygla jegte tehol roku tiskem."
