President's Annual New Year's Message and Report Dear Members: Now that the Christmas and New Year's Holidays are past, we certainly hope that all of you had a pleasant and enjoyable holiday season — and particularly, enjoyed the company of your family and loved ones, together with good health. It has been traditional that the president bring you this report at th;s time each year, in addition to ()trier reports that ne renders periodically to the membership in the

Vestnik. As I read last year's report, I find it appropriate to touch on some of the areas again because I feel they are important and warrant it. Insurance And Membership Growth. Please be reminded that in accordance with Vice President Gebala's new practice of reporting insurance sales now includes the amount of insurance actually issued or placed on the books. ($20,813,900 as of 16 December 1981). This gives a truer picture of the gains, rather than just giving the amount of applications received. What is received (applied for) and what is issued and placed on the books are two different things. The members have a more accurate picture of what our gains in insurance actually are. (Net figures in insurance gains and reports will be reported to you in March of 1982.) We are continuing the trend of issuing a few less certificates, however, the net increase in insurance continues to rise. This is because our members, both old and new, have been buying larger policies. Also, many policies owned by older members in smaller amounts are being replaced by fewer policies in larger amounts. The size of our average policy continues to increase. All of these gains can be attributed to the hard and diligent work on the part of our sales representatives. For that we are grateful. Congratulations To The Winners. Last year in this message you will recall that we talked about a special sales campaign that ran through the first 10 months of this year. couple of lodges whose membership is so thin and sparse that they ought to seriously consider merging with a neighboring lodge. New Lodge Buildings Dedicated. We dedicated a new lodge hall in 1981, that of Lodge 186 in Caldwell. We formally opened and dedicated the structure on October 25, 1981. Premium Refunds. Premium refunds to members for 1981 through December will amount to approximately $320,000. These are )repared by 311" ,L'omputer service in Austin and sent out by the financia,

secretary's department, plus the annual postage allowance for mailing of these refunds to members of approximately $6,000. These amounts are about the same as last year's. 8% Refund To Lodges. The 8% refund to lodges for 1981 through December will amount to approximately $168,000. This is also handled by the financial secretary's department. Death Claims. A total of 408 death claims were paid through December 1st. These are handled by the secretary-treasurer's department. This figure is an increase over last year's figure of 359 at this time. This number represents many good and loyal brothers and sisters who have left our midst May they rest in peace .

totally new system, it will take a little getting used to, and although human beings are creatures of habit and accustomed to doing things for many years "the old way", we must adjust to the times, and after we do, I think that we will all find that the benefits of the new data processing will work to the benefit of everyone at all levels of our Society. There may be some frustrations in the meantime, but we ask that you be patient and cooperative and also realize that while we are working with some very sophisticated technological equipment that human beings are still very much involved. After everything is smoothed out, we are convinced that you will sing the praises of the system and wonder why it wasn't done much earlier. Remember this: We have advanced from what might be termed the "horse and buggy" era into the "rocket or space age" virtually overnight with no transition system in between. This certainly speaks well of those who have been involved. The other officers here have burned many hours of proverbial "midnight oil" working with specialists and data processing consultants. I have not involved myself personally in the direct application of the system because I felt that the other three officers were entirely capable of putting the system into place and it would have been another case of "too many cooks spoiling the broth" (or goulash, if you like). I have involved myself peripherally to the extent of informing myself about the overall progress of the implementation of the system on a continuing basis. Anyone would be pleased with the results that have been achieved so far; I certainly am. It is to our credit, especially to those who have been directly involved. You, as the general membership, are now part of this system and it is up to you to help us make it work. It will work if you stop and realize the benefits that will accrue to the SPJST. Specifically, local lodges will have more time for fraternal activities and financial secretaries will be (Continued on Page 3)
