State Comptroller's Office Representative Meets With President Morris

Mr. Mike Reesing of the Belton Enforcement Office with the State Comptroller's Department (Bob Bullock, State Comptroller) called on Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris December 4th to discuss the recently-passed Bingo Enabling Act, also known as H.B. No. 3. The two are shown looking at a just-published booklet entitled "Bingo Regulation". The booklet contains the highlights and essential provisions of H.B. No. 3. All local enforcement offices are under instructions from Mr. Bullock to contact area organizations and units regarding the provisions of the new law and they will be doing so by December 15th. "We're going to be in a time squeeze, but we've been ordered to drop everything else and concentrate on this effort," said Mr. Reesing. At traditional homecoming ceremonies at Lake Highlands High School Miss Carol Skrabanek was elected by the 2100-member student body to be their 1981-82 Homecoming Queen. Carol won the title over 6 other nominees. Miss Christy Jeffers ' was selected Junior Princess and Miss Tanya Zidermanis became Sophomore Duchess.

Carol is a senior Varsity Cheerleader and is active in many student organizations and was recently selected to the. Society of Distinguished American High School Students.

Carol's football team, "The Lake Highlands Wildcats," defeated the Temple Wildcats in Regional Playoffs last Friday night, Nov. 27 in Baylor Stadium in Waco by a score of 7-3. Lake Highlands will play Grand Prairie in the quarter finals Friday night, Dec. 4 at Texas Stadium in Dallas.

Carol is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Skrabanek of Dallas and are all members of Lodge 130.

She is the niece of Brother Melvin Skrabanek, of District I who serves on the SPJST Publication Committee. CENSUS SURVEY HERE TO COLLECT INFORMATION ABOUT HIRED FARM WORKERS Information about farm work done for pay during the past year and about migratory farm work will be collected by the Bureau of the Census in this area during the work week of December 14-18, 1981, John E. Reeder, Director of the Bureau's Regional Office in Dallas, has announced.

The farm work questions are in addition to the ones asked regularly in the monthly survey on employment and unemployment conducted by the Bureau for the U.S. Department of Labor.

Results of this survey provide data on conditions in the labor force, prime indicators of the economic health of the country. For example, in October the survey indicated that of the 106.7 million men and women in the civilian labor force, 98.2 million were employed. The nation's unemployment rate was 8.0 percent, up from 7.5 percent in September and the 1981 low of 7.0 percent in July.

About 71,000 households across the country, scientifically selected to represent a cross section of American households, take part in this monthly survey. All information provided the Bureau is confidential by law and can be published only as statistical totals in which no individual or household can be identified. *** Wind-Chill Factor. Winds can make any temperature seem chillier than the thermometer indicates, says the National Weather Service.

When the temperature is 35 degrees Fahrenheit and the wind is blowing at 15 miles per hour, for example, the effect on exposed skin is the same as 16 degrees and no wind. A 30-mile-per-hour wind at the same temperature produces the effect of 6 degrees. *** Preventing hypothermia. If you know the wind-chill factor, you can guard against hypothermia — (the rapid lowering of the body's internal temperature) that affects judgment and sometimes results in death.

Hypothermia usually occurs when a person wearing wet clothing is exposed to temperatures slightly above freezing. Winds help bring on hypothermia by increasing the loss of body heat.

Vaccine for Hepatitis B. The first vaccine against hepatitis has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in the United States. The vaccine was rated highly effective against hepatitis-B virus, a major cause of liver disease. Up to 300,000 Americans are infected with the virus each year, resulting in 10,000 hospitalizations and 200 deaths. Initial targets are high-risk individuals-medical workers, kidneydialysis patients and persons who need frequent blood transfusions.

The vaccine will be available for general use by mid-1982, says its manufacturer, Merck Sharp & Dohme. *** Health Insurance. Don't expect your health insurance to pay all of the family's medical expenses, warns the Health Insurance Association of America. On the average, group health insurance pays about 85 cents on each dollar of covered medical expense. Not covered at all by many policies: Preexisting medical problems, cosmetic surgery, out-of-hospital drugs, hospital telephone charges, private hospital rooms and periodic checkups. *** Annual Driving Costs. Owning and operating an American car now costs an average 44.6 cents per mile, 18 percent more than last year, according to an annual study by the Hertz Corporation. Higher price tags and interest rates are to blame.

The cost of operating stripped-down sub-compacts actually dropped 5.3 percent to 34.3 cents per mile, but outlays for full-sized models climbed above 51 cents per mile. Why did costs go down for subcompacts?

More than 50 percent now come without air conditioning and automatic transmissions. *** Reheating Roast Beef. Before serving roast beef that was initially cooked rare and then allowed to cool, it's best to heat it to 145 degrees Fahrenheit or until it is no longer pink, says the New York State Health Department. This reduces the risk of salmonellosis, a form of food poisoning that is characterized by diarrhea, cramps, fever, headache and vomiting. Effects of food poisoning can be especially severe for the young, the old and those with other health problems. *** Street Scams. Beware of lending money to strangers claiming to be neighbors. You may never see the money — or the borrower — again.

What happens is that residents of large cities, where people know few of their neighbors, are being approached on the street by con artists who claim to live nearby and ask to borrow money for "emergency" needs, such as cab fare. Even though the stranger usually promises to return the money, it seldom happens. *** Smoke Masks. Although toxic gases, not flames, are the principal killers when buildings catch fire, consumers should be cautious in shopping for protective devices, warns the Foundation for Fire Safety. One widely marketed Japanese smoke mask that was supposed to be effective in filtering out carbon monoxide for 20 minutes was tested by the foundation. After 9 minutes, almost 99 percent of the carbon monoxide passed through the filter.

Lodge No. 9, Snook Monthly Meeting The Snook Lodge No. 9 met November 4 for their monthly meeting. (Due to bad weather the meeting previously scheduled for October 31 was held November 4.)

The group met for a barbecue chicken supper, with the meeting following. The Youth Club then had their Halloween Party. The meeting was called to order by President Richard Vajdak. Roll call of officers showed all present.

Secretary Lyndon Jakubik read minutes of the October meeting; they were approved as read. He then presented information to the group on Sales Tax Information as supplied by the State Office.

Betty Schoenemann gave a report on Youth Club activities.

Clint Sebesta gave a report on activities scheduled at the lodge for November. Ruth Kovar gave the Property Committee report.

We welcomed a new member — Brandon Jaster.

There was no old business.

New Business included: Hall rentals; schedules on December meeting and Christmas Party for

SPJST Bila Hora Lodge No. 16 will hold its meeting and also have election of officers for the coming year for Sunday, December 13, 1981, starting at 2 p.m.

We will have a little social after the meeting, so we are asking the members to attend this meeting, and bring sandwiches or pastries, and the lodge will furnish the refreshments.

The Granger Lodge No. 20 will have its annual Christmas Party, Sunday, December 13 at 2 p.m. at the lodge hail.

Dear Members and Friends: The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 35, Elk was held November 8 at 3 p.m., with Henry Breitkreutz, Sr. presiding.

The minutes of the October meeting were read by Secretary Albert Banik. He also read thank you notes received. Vernon and Rosie Wood sent a card thanking the lodge for the flowers sent at the time of the loss of his mother, Liddie Wood. Barbara, Gene Edward and Dawn Pavelka thanked the lodge for the support given them during Dawn's surgery.

The treasurer's report was given

by Henry Breitkreutz, Jr. In the Youth Club report, Rosemarie Banik stated there were 15 members present. She introduced Neil Haney who was visiting. They also discussed the date and location of their Christmas Party.

Those members present who had birthdays in November were: Louise Burney, Edna Tepe, Peggy Pursche, Pam Thun, Inez Zalman, Inez Breitkreutz, Albert Banik and Lloyd Steinke.

The committee reports were given by Ruby Pavelka, kitchen chairman; Albert Banik, entertainment chairman; and Henry Breitkreutz, Sr., refreshments chairman. There were no other committee reports.

Sweet Home Lodge

Schedules Meeting and Party Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home will hold its regular monthly meeting and Christmas social December 20 at the Firemen's Hall in Sweet Home beginning at 1:30 p.m. Officers will be elected and committees chosen.

Door prizes will be drawn and someone, with a birthday in October, November or December, will win a cake baked by Millie Kutac.

After the meeting gifts will be exchanged. The price is $1.75 to $2, again. Please mark if the gift is for a lady or a man.

Following the exchange of gifts and entertainment, lunch will be served. Everyone is asked to bring something for the lunch. The lodge will furnish drinks as always.

This is one of the most important meetings of the year, so try to attend. Get in the Christmas spirit and join in the Christmas fun.

At our November 8,1981 meeting, the date was set for a Christmas Party; it will be held December 9 at Luby's Cafeteria, 2223 North Loop, off Burnet Road at 7:30 p.m. Our gettogether last year, at the same place, was a success. Members and all their families are invited. The dinner will be furnished.

Members voted to increase our charitable contributions this year to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor, the Austin State School and Salvation Army with floral gifts and visits to be made to our sick members.

Meeting Set For San Angelo Lodge

Lodge No. 172 November Meeting Results Pasadena

Dear Members and Friends: I hope you didn't forget the annual meeting December 9. All of you were mailed a letter the day after Thanksgiving about the annual meeting and the Christmas Party held December 5. It was also announced in the November 18, 1981 Vestnik issue. Several members mentioned that they used to get the Vestnik but no longer get it. One reason is that, some time ago, we were all sent a card and if we did not return it our Vestnik would not be sent to us. It isn't too late. Let us know if you wish to receive the Vestnik or you yourself write to:

Our October and November meetings were well-attended. Keep this up and those who were ill were missed and we hope you all can come again soon. (Sister Klechka take care so you can return to your regular routine soon. We miss you when you can't come.) Sister Lillia Mae Peter was missed when she was ill. She is well and working hard again. As for us, we are doing better. My husband, Joe, is getting around a little without the use of crutches the last few days. We also became grandparents for the second time: William Joseph Yonley was born November 18, 1981 to Bill and Betty Joe Yonley; the little lad weighed 10 1/2 lbs.

Back to our meetings: our Building Committee is working hard to get things started and going.

We are again helping to sponsor a bus of senior citizens to the Country Music Jamboree held at the Sam Houston Coliseum for December 12.

It is sponsored by the Golden Years Council which is an association of senior citizens. (I understand that this is an enjoyable event for the older citizens, especially those who live in rest homes.)

At both of our meetings, we also had representatives from a group who were interested in sponsoring monthly dances for senior citizens of 50 years and over at the Lodge Hall.

A music group offered to furnish music at veryreasonable cost to get it started but no dates have been set at this time; this being such a busy season may not have worked out too well.

The Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department is having their Christmas Party for their families and children at our lodge. We are always glad to do something for them. We have a great volunteer fire department in Pasadena.

Everyone was handed a copy of the rules and regulations by the Rules and Regulations Committee.

Brother Dan Berry read them one by one for discussion. It was easy to keep up with since everyone had a copy to follow and saved time, too.

All the usual and regular reports were given at both the October and November meetings.

The name of Sister Ruby Skrabanek was drawn for the $250 door prize at the November meeting; Sister Skrabanek was not present, so the door prize will go up to $275 for the-December drawing.

No. 183 Schedules Elections at December Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: Our November meeting of MidCities lodge was called to order by President B. J. Hlavaty.

Norman Kneschke led the

members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Absent from the meeting were Secretary Patricia Sill and Financial-Secretary Daniel Roznovsky.

The minutes from our previous meeting were read by 2nd Vice President Robert Sill. Treasurer's report was read by Treasurer Inez Greenlees. Both reports were approved as read.

No insurance report was given.

We acknowledged and accepted one new member: Tony Sanchez. We are proud to welcome Tony into our lodge and we appreciate his help during game nights. We hope he and his family will continue to attend lodge functions.

The Nominating Committee was appointed and election of officers will be held after the December meeting, which will, be held Sunday, December 13 at 6:30 p.m.

On the sick list we have Diane Kuyawa who is recovering from major surgery and Dottie Kral is undergoing medical treatments. We wish them a speedy recovery and hope to see them at the lodge again, soon.

B. J. and I would like to thank our children, parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and our dear friends for making our "30" Wedding Anniversary a very memorable occasion. A special thanks to Brother Sid Pokladnik and Sister Justine for their attendance.

We know they have a very busy schedule. Thanks Brother Sid for all those kind words, we appreciate your thoughtfulness. C. J. Hlavaty of West said the "Blessing" before our meal and he and his lovely wife, Martha, led the grand march before the dance. This was a first for Lodge No. 183. It really was beautiful and enjoyed by all. Henry Rejcek and his Polka Band from Ennis provided the wonderful music.

B. J. and I are the parents of five children: Bernard Hlavaty, Jr., of Peyton, Colorado; Diane Schneider, Karen Hlavaty and Nancy Hlavaty, all of Arlington; and the late Gary Wayne Hlavaty of Arlington, deceased as of May 6, 1981. We have one granddaughter, Stephanie Schneider, daughter-in-law, Laurie Hlavaty, and son-in-law, Steve Schneider.

Guests came from Bellmead, Ennis, West, Leroy, Tours, Cottonwood, Mesquite, Dallas, Arlington, Grand Prairie and Peyton, Colorado. Our thanks to all of you for coming to the dinner and dance and for all the congratulatory wishes and messages, the beautiful flowers and the many lovely gifts.

Our love to all of you for a really great day!

The next lodge dance will be Saturday, December 12, from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. It will be a country/ western dance, with music by "Patchwork." It's their first time at the lodge.

Make plans also to attend our big New Year's Eve dance December 31; Henry Rejcek and his Polka Band from Ennis will be providing those great new and old-time favorites.

Lodge No. 183 is proud it was able to donate another $150 to the Star House, a drug and alcoholic rehabilitation center in Fort Worth.

We also purchased 50 booklets entitled, "Games Prisoners Play" and these were sent to the imprisoned in Huntsville.

I enjoyed a delightful Thanksgiving Day with my brother, Frank Dvorak, and sister-in-law, Frances.

All members of their family were here last weekend before Thanksgiving, so we three had dinner together prepared by Frances.

Instead of a turkey we had a nice golden-roasted duck with feather light dumplings and sweet-sauer cabbage (kacenu, knedlicky a sladkokysele zeli) and mouth-watering dessert, and, after this delicious meal, Frank set up the slide projector and started showing 600 slides from our numerous trips here in the states and the three months spent in Europe with, of course, lots of family gatherings and watching our families growing up. For us three it was a pleasure and we were glad not to have bored anyone for three hours.

Antonio, but my son, Henry, and wife, Della, were leaving Wednesday and not coming home until Friday and that meant staying over two nights, which they know I don't like and my granddaughter Sandy Segner understands. My other son, Erwin, and wife, Doris, in Beaumont, also wanted me to come, but I called them long distance and promised to come some other time. I know, with Doris's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Kuhn, their daughter, Kathy, from Austin, Michael and wife, Linda Olexa, with two children of Deer Park, William of Beaumont, Robert and Frank of Houston had quite a gathering and happy Thanksgiving Day and so did I. At night I went to the lodge and enjoyed the social as I do every Thursday and that's the way I ended this holiday and, in three weeks, we will welcome Santa and then the New Year, and 1982 will be here to deal with. I give thanks, for my health, my many friends and loving family.

A family group hosted the Lee Roy Matocha dance Saturday, November 21; in charge of the night was Linda Wehring and serving in the box office. Her two sisters, Debbie and Cindy, and their mother, Edna, helped with the arriving guests. Of course, their father, Willie Wehring, kept an eye on the lovely female group in charge.

Everything went off nicely and smoothly.

The Vrazel dance Saturday, November 26 was hosted by Gus Gerlich and, serving in the box office was his spouse, Ann, with Ted Krischke seating the, guests and Millie Krischke with Elsie Werner greeted the arriving guests. It was not a dress code dance, but everyone attending made a nice appearance and the ladies on the committee looked lovely.

The Blue Room is open all dance nights and always on Thursday, Friday night and sometimes on Sunday; that makes it a nice place to meet close friends, long-missed friends and new friends. I arrived for the Vrazel dance, (I usually park close to the entrance if possible).

First I stop and chat with the sisters and brothers on the committee, look the Chandelier Ballroom over, then I make a usual stop in the dining room and kitchen to chat with the everbusy Annie Vala turning out delicious hamburgers and tasty breakfasts for the hungry guests and, after that, I slip into the Blue Room where a few members are seated and enjoying the refreshing drink prepared by our friendly bartender, Nat. This time I was pleasantly surprised by Frances Crossmann in company with her grandson, Mark Wahlberg, and his recent bride, Betty Joyce, of Temple, Texas; they were visiting grandmother Frances over Thanksgiving; also, at the same table, Tillie Helmcamp with her daughter, Jennette Eubank, and husband, Robert, having a time keeping up with their two-year-old, Brooks Krejci Eubank, who is a live wire and Bob Allbritton and spouse, Margaret, our lodge treasurer. In a few minutes the twins (we call them) Irene Slovacek and Irma O'Conner came in and, to top it off, proud grandparents Willie and Alex Mendoza came in with the sixmonth-old granddaughter, Wendy Renee, dressed in red to go with the

TUBERCULOSIS — STILL A MAJOR HEALTH PROBLEM This is the first of a brief two-part series on TUBERCULOSIS TODAY. In 1980 in Texas over 2,000 persons were reported to be new cases of tuberculosis in the U.S. approximately 27,000.

In 1980 in Texas, another approxi mately 14,000 children and other persons were placed on INH therapy to prevent the development of active tuberculosis.

In Texas at the end of 1980, there were currently on the tuberculosis case register about 3,500 persons requiring follow-up care and super vision.

Tuberculosis, unlike some com municable diseases which can easily be prevented and quickly cured, requires an extended period of treatment.

Tuberculosis remains our most costly communicable disease.

How is Tuberculosis diagnosed?

Tuberculosis is spread from one person to another by germs carried through the air -- it is not spread by dishes, books, clothes, or bed linen.

A physician examines the persons and uses one or more of the following to help in the diagnosis: 1. TUBERCULIN SKIN TEST: Shows whether a person has been infected with the tuberculosis organism.

The most accurate skin test is the one given with a syringe and needle.

It is a very simple procedure. About two drops of tuberculin are injected into the skin near enough to the surface to raise a small bump similar to a mosquito bite. The test is read 23 days later. An area of swelling, 10

millimeters or more, shows that infection is present.

2. CHEST X-RAY EXAMINATION: Shows whether the infection has caused damage to lung tissue.

3. SPUTUM EXAMINATION (BACTERIOLOGY): Shows whether a person has live tuberculosis organisms in the lungs that can be coughed into the air.

X-rays and sputum examinations are done at intervals during entire time people are taking medicines in order to see if the medicines are working.

HILLJE LODGE NO.40 YC ACTIVITIES Dear Vestnik Readers, Our Youth Club held its regular monthly meeting November 17, 1981.

At the meeting, the minutes were read and approved as read. The children also made Thanksgiving Turkeys from pinecones and Christmas tree ornaments for the Christmas tree that we will decorate December 15 for our Christmas Party.

The youngsters also drew names and are to bring their presents to the hall December 15 to our lodge Christmas Party at night.

Mrs. James Bacak took the turkeys we made to the Hillje Czech Catholic Nursing Home residents and they really did enjoy the turkeys. The youth members also enjoyed Thanksgiving decorated cookies with punch served by Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Borak.

Moravian Sugar Cake 1 small potato, peeled and cubed 1 cup water 1 package active dry yeast 1/3 cup granulated sugar 1/3 cup lard or shortening, melted 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons butter or margarine 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Cook potato in water till tender.

Cool to lukewarm (115 degrees to 120 degrees F). Set aside 1/4 cup potato water. Mash potato in remaining liquid, adding water, if needed, to make 1 cup potato mixture. Soften yeast in reserved 1/4 cup liquid. Combine potato mixture, yeast mixture, granulated sugar, lard, and salt; mix well. Beat in 1 cup of the flour. Let rise in warm place 30 to 45 minutes till spongy. Stir down dough; add enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Turn out on floured surface; knead 4 minutes.

Description of most age classes is based on the relative amount of exposed dentine on the crests next to the tongue.

Deer have only six jaw teeth, although they appear to have many more. The teeth are in two distinct categories — the premolars, and the molars.

Deer are aged in fractions because they are born around June or July and usually are examined during the fall hunting season.

Deer managers should keep accurate records on all deer harvested to determine the effects of practices such as brush control, livestock management and levels of deer harvest. Without such records, any change in management cannot be evaluated accurately with respect to the impact of deer quality.

Records need not be elaborate. On males, antler characteristics can be measured using a small steel measuring tape. These measurements should include the circumference of the antler at the base, above the burr; the inside spread at the widest point on the main beam; and the length of the main beam measured on the outside of the antler from base to tip. The number of points on each antler should be noted.

Body weights, usually from field dressed (internal organs removed) animals, should be kept. Also, the sex should be recorded.

General body conditions can be recorded as good, fair or poor based on predetermined criteria.

Finally, all animals should be aged. This will allow the deer manager to categorize the information by age and sex. The records then will show at a glance, for example, what the average weights and antler characteristics are for all bucks in any given age class. Even if some error is made in aging individual deer, the combined records will reflect the quality of young growing deer, mature animals that should be prime and older animals that may be declining in some quality characteristic. Such accuracy is sufficient for management purposes.

By maintaining these and other records (deer density figures, range condition, livestock stocking rates, etc.) the deer manager can best determine the results of herd management.

ARTICLE 20 (b) - Ben Trcalek moved that this entire section be reworded to read as follows: In the event that neither the elected member nor his substitute can serve on the committee for which such member has been elected, then and in that event, the district delegates from the preceding convention shall elect another member from the district membership to serve on such committee. The procedure for the election will be determined by the district officers. The district president shall notify the secretary of such standing committee and the Supreme Lodge of the results of the election.

After no discussion, the motion was passed by a show of hands of the delegates.

ARTICLE 22 - Ben Trcalek moved that the following be added to the end of the present article: The articles first adopted and not repealed in the convention shall take precedence over subsequent by-laws enacted. The by-law as amended and adopted shall control over conflicting committee reports adopted by the convention.

Following Article 22, Ben Trcalek moved that the following new article be added: A member on suspension for whatever reason shall be disqualified to serve in any position within the Society.

Maxine Sefcik (54) asked if this article includes a member who sues the SPJST for any reason. Chairman Pokladnik stated that this is two different things and that'the idea of a law suit is covered in a different article.

Jerry Ennis (88) asked the question, "What is the length of a duration of a suspension?"

Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr. stated that his understanding of a suspension is the failure to make insurance premium payments.

A suspended member has 90 days to pay up his premiums. Ben Trcalek stated that a suspension is for whatever reasons and for whatever period of time is required to remove it Rudy Sefcik (54) asked if a member doesn't pay premiums is he required to be replaced.

Legal Advisor Lesikar stated that a suspension is what is called for in the by-laws whether it is for non-payment of dues, misconduct in office, or for whatever reason; a member will lose his privileges of membership in our Society.

President Morris mentioned that following each convention the by-laws are thought to be perfect but that between conventions situ ations arise that cause changes. After this discussion, the motion passed as printed by the By-Law Committee by a show of hands by the delegates.

ARTICLE 23 - no change ARTICLE 24-1 - no change ARTICLE 24-2 - Ben Trcalek moved that this entire section be deleted to which the delegates approved by a show of hands.

ARTICLE 24-3, 4, 5 and 6 - no change ARTICLE 25 (a) - no change ARTICLE 25 (b) - Ben Trcalek moved that the article be rewritten to read as follows: No member of the Supreme Lodge, nor the editor, may hold any other position in the districts.

ARTICLE 28 (a) - Ben Trcalek moved that "Chief Medical Examiner" and "State Youth Director" be deleted from the entire article and that the word "or" be inserted between Supreme Lodge and Editor, which the delegates approved by a show of hands.

ARTICLE 31 (k) - Ben Trcalek moved that this article be rewritten as follows: He is in charge of the Youth Department and has direct control over all youth activities. He has the authority to

appqint and discharge the state youth adviser'and the district youth coordinators and their assistants with the approval of the Supreme Lodge. The president and the state youth adviser and the district youth coordinators formulate rules and regulations for youth activities at all levels, subject to the approval of the Supreme Lodge.

Melvin Steger 4(29) stated that the district should have the right to choose its own district youth counselor. Norval Crossman (88) stated that the district should not lose its authority in electing district youth counselors. Helen Oates (130) stated that she concurred with the above delegates and that she thinks the Supreme Lodge President is entirely out of line in having the right to discharge the district youth counselors. Roy Hranicky (137) stated that the district should retain its right to select the district youth counselors and would also maintain better harmony within the districts. Darlene Engelke (66) stated that the above arguments are good but that some district youth counselors are not doing their jobs properly and she thinks that the president of the SPJST would be able to appoint more qualified people. Mary Frances Wahlberg (88) stated she is in favor of the district electing the district youth counselors and that if we allowed this to change that sometime in the near future this might lead to other district officers being appointed by the Supreme Lodge. Katherine Bedrich (72) stated that she has only been active in the SPJST for a short time but that so far we have the best district youth counselors she has seen. Bessie Petr (84) stated that she thought the president of the SPJST was a wonderful person and that she couldn't say a word against him but that if we took away the districts' right to elect district youth counselors the attendance at district meetings would decrease. Howard Leshikar (48) asked to move the question. Ben Trcalek (17) stated that the reason the By-Law Committee suggested this change was that they received information that the Supreme Lodge pays the salary of the district youth counselors and that they have no authority over them. Richard Wahlberg (88) stated that the above statement was a mistake and that the district youth counselors receive no salary but only get per diem when they work.

Chairman Pokladnik called for a vote by a show of hands, noting that the motion failed to carry and Article 31 (k) remains as is.

ARTICLE 31 (I) (m) and (n) - no change ARTICLE 32 (a) - no change ARTICLE 32 (b) - Ben Trcalek moved that the words and district" be deleted. Evelyn Mikeska (88), District V Sales Representative, protested this deletion and would speak to this matter at a later time Milton Trammell (176) asked the question, "What is the purpose of this?" Ben Trcalek then responded that the recommendation of the Insurance Committee was to do away with the district sales representatives. Milton Trammell (176) stated that his lodge has gone on record feeling that this is a mistake in not having district sales representatives and would vote against this deletion. Helen Bryson (175) stated that we need district sales representatives because they are helpful to all of us. Chester Shmoldas (74) asked the question, "What does this change mean?" Chairman Pokladnik responded that this would delete the district sales representatives. Chester Shtnoldas stated that he was in favor of doing away with the district sales representatives because if a local representative doesn't want to sell insurance, any amount of district sales representatives will not help. He thought that the State Field Managers were a good idea. Joe Nezval (28) stated that if this change goes through, he felt that The Supreme Lodge would foul us up as they did on our recent District Sales Representatives Award Banentet." Vice President Gebala answered by stating that it is the district sales representative's duty to be in charge of the district sales banquet and that in this case, he had to order the district sales representative to have the banquet by a certain date. Charlie Matcek (81) asked Vice President Gebala to explain his reasons for the deletion. Vice President Gebala stated that he has no personal feelings or animosities toward any district sales representative, no personal grievances, and that this is, only being done for good business reasons. In addition, he stated that this idea came about in the December 1979 Insurance Committee meeting in which they recommended an increase in all local lodge sales representatives' commissions. Following this recommendation, he wrote the actuary for his feelings on this matter. The actuary stated this would be possible so long as any change for either group came from within the precentages already set for commissions and that otherwise the rate structure for insurance premiums would have to be revised. With this in mind, Vice President Gebala said that he simply wants to give a pay raise to the local sales representatives and went on to ask the

delegates what they would do in this instance if they had five people earning $40,000 per year and another 375 people wanting a pay raise. "This will answer your own question," he stated. Mike Hilsher (170) stated that the district sales representatives were a good idea because he had written letters asking for assistance to help reorganize his lodge but that no one came except the district sales representative. Darlene Engelke (66) stated that you have the interest of five people against the interest of 375 representatives.

She further stated that the local sales representatives are actually doing the work. In addition, she stated that District III has been without a district sales representative for over a year and that the district has been doing fine without a district sales representative. In addition, she stated she was almost shocked when she heard how high and astounding the amount of money paid to the district sales representatives and that this money should be given to the local sales representatives. Roy Hranicky (137) went into the history of the district sales representatives and stated that the proposed new Article 36 (m) would allow the district directors to assist the vice president. Hejny to the effect that if the idea of State Field Managers would work out good that the Society would hire one.

Louis Halms stated that the Society hired Silas Smith and that Joe B. Hejny was proud of the achievements accomplished by him and because of this success a second field manager in the name of Gene McBride was hired with both men doing a good job for our Society. Henry West (66) stated that the gasoline is high and that he has talked with several sales representatives and that he feels that if they do not receive a raise some will be required to quit. He recommended that the sales representatives need a raise and not the district representatives because the local sales representatives are the backbone of our Society. Mildred Holeman (88) asked Vice President Gebala to offer figures concerning district sales representatives and the proposed raise for the local sales representatives.

Vice President Gebala stated that he is proposing a 5 percent increase up-front for all local sales representatives. In addition, he stated that over the last four years the total of $139,452.83 was paid to all district sales representatives, with a range of $1,839.87 to $10,007.33 being paid individually to each district sales representative per year Also Vice President Gebala mentioned that the two State Field Managers spent only $2,640.00 for lodging and food in 1979 and that the total auto expense for all Supreme Lodge officers was $3,538.07 in 1979. Vice President Gebala stated that some district:sales representatives make more money on a part-time basis than his full-time assistant and that he was simply trying to get a pay raise for his local sales representatives without raising insurance premiums. Eugene Barcak (88) asked, "Will two State Field Managers be able to handle the, entire state? Vice President Gebala responded that he has good confidence in the two people he now has employed but that if we need to hire another some time in the future that the money used for this will not come from the percentage allocated for payment of commissions. Lillian Finn (88) moved that we vote the question by secret ballot, seconded by Frank Veselka (79), and passed by a show of hands by the delegates present. Evelyn Mikeska (88) stated that a lot of delegates probably don't know the duties of a district sales representative and that she had worked very close and hard in her district with the local sales representatives. In addition, she stated that she works very close with her sales reps, and all 17 lodges in her district, that her sales reps and lodges were loyal and respectful to her, that she felt a lot of people will quit as sales reps if the district sales rep is deleted and that if some district sales reps are not doing their jobs properly, they should be replaced.

stated that the Insurance Committee of which he is chairman brought this motion before the convention and thinks that it is only good business to move forward. In addition, Ben Jarma stated that the present system is okay but District III, as an example, has had no district sales representative and that they have had no problems in meeting their quota.

Chester Shmoldas (74) addressed the convention on the same idea he presented earlier.

Melvin Steger (29) stated that he favored district sales representatives but didn't understand their duties. Frances Olexa (88) asked for an explanation on how to vote on the question. Ladis Navratil (87) stated that we all want a raise so let's vote. Darlene Engelke (66) reminded the delegates again that only the top delegate should vote the odd votes.

Maxine Sefcik (54) asked if we had to put our lodge number on the ballot. Darlene Engelke (66) asked if we can take ballots to the convention secretaries in the work area.

Chairman Pokladnik answered both questions with a yes. Results of the secret ballot were 29,837 (77.65%) for the proposal to delete Article 32 (b) and 8,590 (22.35%) against deletion. Therefore, motion passed as recommended by the By-Law Committee.

ARTICLE 32 (c) - Ben Trcalek moved that the following be deleted: This sales representative must have attended at least one-half (1/2) of the meetings preceding his appointment as sales representative in the previous twelve (12) months. This excludes inactive and new lodges. He supervises their production and has the right to dismiss them.

Ben Trcalek stated that the following should be substituted for the above deletion: After a new sales representative is appointed he must be active in Lodge activities, namely, attend local lodge meetings and regularly scheduled sales representatives seminars. If this requirement is not met to the Vice President's satisfaction (and or on request of a local lodge to the Vice President), he has the right to dismiss the sales representative.

The delegates are reminded that Joe Nezval (28) proposed an amendment to the above which is designated in parenthesis and this amendment was accepted by the By-Law Committee within their recommendation.

With this in mind the delegates approved the above listed addition by a show of hands.

ARTICLE 32 (d) - The By-Law Committee recommended the deletion of the entire article. The convention chairman asked for discussion and the change was adopted by the delegates by a show of hands.

Blahoslav tu mimo strohych historickych fakta zapisoval listiny, dopisy, pameti o raznych pilhoclach, jednanich a usnesenich, naboi. traktaty, obrany a polemiky, z nichi nektere byly jeho vlastni dila. S temito Akty tizce souvisi Nekrologium-kniha umrti bratrskych kne2i v nit Blahoslav se projevil jako mistr ve struene vystane charakteristice osob. Blahoslav byl dvakrat vyslancem Jednoty k jednani ye Vidni; k schtzce s budoucim kralem Maxmilianem Blahoslav si ptipravil latinskou prosbu i obranu ve struenem spislcu, kde brani Jednotu proti jejimu ztotoiriovani se s valdenskou sektou.

V roce 1557 Jan Blahoslav byl na synodu bratrske cirkve zvolen biskupem Jednoty a rok nato pisatem neboli tajemnikem teto cirkve a jejim archivatem i dejepiscern. Toto Blahoslavovo dilo, vytio v roce 1564 v Ivaneicfch a v opravenem vydanf znovu v roce 1568, se stalo pak podnetem k zahajeni kolektivrif pra,- ce vedoucf k vydanf slavne bible Kralicke. Blahoslavilv pteklad je v§ak nejen einem kulturnfm ale i einem velmi vyznamnym z hlediska dejin deskeho jazyka.
