San Antonio Couple• Honored on Golden Anniversary Saturday, November 14, 1981 will be always remembered by Frank and Viola Mazac and the many friends who helped celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at the Polish-American Center in San Antonio.

It was a happy occasion for the couple. A delicious meal was served at 6 p.m. and the suds and champagne flowed until late into the night.

Many guests were entertained by a group of Mexican Mariachi's; the music was wonderful. Several out-oftown guests were also present.

After the meal a grand march was played which was furnished by the Adolph Hofner and Pearl CULTURAL CAWARENESS

Wranglers' music. Everyone enjoyed the evening very much. The supper and music were excellent.

In behalf of Frank's and Viola's friends, we wish them the best of health, and may God see fit 1-1 give them many more years together.

Both of them are active SPJST Lodge No. 133 members. Sister Viola is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Miculka, who were well-known in the SPJST organization. Both of her parents have passed away.

Thank you both for the beautiful evening, and our thoughts will always be with you.

If you do not have a regular reporter, select or appoint one in your next meeting. What you need is a volunteer who would reach for a sheet of paper with feeling of gladness, pride, and enthusiasm to tell others of your lodge functions, to share, with others, your experiences, and to present some new ideas.

Our contributors and/or corresponding reporters are reminded to please write only about lodge affairs, social remarks, and in the fraternal spirit. Do Not write about religion and/or politics Pro nor Con. Article 103, Section (b), of our SPJST Bylaws on page 66 of our 1980 XXIIIrd Convention Booklet states: Letters should be of a purely fraternal spirit, without political, religious, or antireligious inclination. We ask for your cooperation! Religion belongs in churches and politics belong to politicians.

In some cases your willing but inexperienced reporter may object that he/she does not know what to write about. Do we avoid meeting people for the fear of not knowing what to talk about? Most of the material sent to your official paper for publication will be informal. It will consist of the unceremoneous exchange of news, plans, ideas and experiences.

Let us suggest some simple rules to the new reporters what they could write about: 1) Personalities; 2) Ideas; and 3) Ideals. Your article(s) should contain one or more of these three suggestions.

Those who do something in your lodge and do it well are the ones to be mentioned. Today it is necessary to recognize those who are able to give guidance, help, and advice, whether it is in a fraternal organization or in business. Your lodge may have several members who have served faithfully for many long years as officers of the lodge or serving presently as some of your local officers; surely some of these individuals with qualities should be

mentioned. It is the least that you can do for them by writing a word of appreciation or about someone being the oldest member of the lodge or someone having the most children in the family who are graduates, etc.

All these brothers and sisters belong in the class of personalities.

Yes, you can write about them, if you are willing. Your publication will be enriched by your contributions.

The second point is the thing called "Ideas." Although it is loosely used for any vague conception, supposition or fancy, here, in our publication, it denotes a good or practical plan, solution or suggestion. Usually every successful meeting brings forth several ideas of plans to solve certain problems.

And the problems of one lodge are similar to the problems of other lodges. Can you share the success of your plan with others? We know you can. What you need is somebody to explain the working of your procedure. Again you will enrich your own paper.

Now to the third point: An ideal.

Here we are coming quite close to those who are urging changes, amendments or recommendations in their local lodge Rules and Regulations, but we can avoid the extreme by stating that an ideal is a standard of excellence, an aim of constant striving for practical improvements. A scientist may say that a perfect circle is an ideal impossible to construct, but we may always strive "to form a more perfect union in our fraternal circles." Your ideals are needed and will be welcomed by those who read the publication. *** Do you enjoy complaints? Do you feel as sympathetic toward the person who unburdens his troubles on others as you do toward the person who "can take it?" It is a million to one you do not. Do you know anyone who does? Then why do so many people continue to pour their complaints into the ears of anyone who will listen?

The answer to that question explains many another human frailty. We can see the behavior of others much better than we can see them in ourselves. When the other fellow complains, we know that he gains nothing by it, and often loses our respect. We know that sympathy cannot be forced from us without being converted into pity or contempt, but when we, ourselves, complain we are too preoccupied with our own emotions to detect dis interest, boredom or distaste in our listeners.

Therefore it is important to remember that just as enthusiasm attracts others, complaining repels them.

To complain to others about your friend is to advertise the shallowness of his friendship. To complain to others about one's enemy is to admit one's own weakness.

If we can be patient and understanding when others complain, we have little to lose, and their gratitude to gain, but when we, ourselves, feel tempted to complain — that's the time to turn away from your feelings and towards your work. The time and energy individuals would otherwise waste in futile words can then be profitably invested in improving its

These words are being written at 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, November 24th; your editor has just returned from the Post Office with this information: Our U.S. Post Offices are completely closed on Sundays, however, the mail is picked up at post offices.

There are however 4 holidays each year when the mail system just DOES NOT MOVE and they are: July 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. The reason for these words above? Your editor can see now that SOME of your letters will be delayed! We hope you understand. ***

SUPREME LODGE

Lodge Officers' Workshops For 1982 To All Concerned: Based on recent actions of the Supreme Lodge, the following decisions were made pertaining to the holding of the Officers' Workshops next spring: 1) Instead of being held in three different locations as in the past, it has been decided to hold all the sections here in the Home Office building in Temple. The thinking is that there are still a lot of members who have not had the opportunity to visit the Supreme Lodge Home Office and who have never toured or viewed the museum facilities, especially now since they have been moved to the basement.

2) The date selected for the workshops is Saturday, March 6,1982. All sections will meet in various areas of the Home Office building, starting at 10 a.m. and lasting until 12:45.

3) A catered noon meal will be furnished, courtesy of the Supreme Lodge, at 1 p.m. and it will be served at Lodge No. 47 Seaton approximately 8 miles east of Temple on Hwy. 53.

4) A final and joint session will start at 2 p.m. and we should be completed by 2:30. The last matter of business to be taken care of will be the completion of the requisition forms for mileage reimbursement.

5) Sections will include lodge presidents and vice presidents in one section and lodge secretaries and financial secretaries in another.

Lodge treasurers may attend any or all of the sections, moving to them only at the start of a session or during the breaks.

6) Mileage reimbursement for one car only from each lodge. Anyone else wishing to attend, other than those mentioned here, is welcomed to do so, furnishing their own transportation.

7) Lodging headquarters for those wishing to come in on a Friday night from a considerable distance is the Holiday Inn on 1-35 on the west side of Temple. It will be up to the

vations and we have made arrangements with the motel four one billing for all those staying at the motel instead of a number of bills. In addition to lodging, meals will be allowed at the motel for those stayigg overnight. (Sorry, no allowances for alcoholic beverages; the motel staff has been so informed.) Those wishing to make reservations may do so by contacting the Holiday Inn, 802 North General Bruce Drive, telephone 817-778-4411. If you write, address your letter to the attention of Faye Dillard, and if you call ask for her because the arrangements for the workshop were made with her and she is familiar with all the particulars.

Directions to the Holiday Inn: For all those traveling from the South on 1-35, the next exit after you pass the Adams Avenue Exit is the Nugent Avenue Exit. Take that exit, proceed to Nugent Avenue for about half a mile and cross over 1-35 to the left and then take the service road on the west side of 1-35 back to Holiday Inn. For those coming into Temple from the north on 1-35, take Exit 303, which is the Nugent Avenue Exit, and go approximately one-half mile to the Holiday Inn. Those coming into Temple on Hwy. 36 from the west or south, and on Hwys. 95 and 53, the above directions should suffice, except that you will probably utilize South 1st and Adams Ave. coming into Temple, the latter being the main east-west artery through town.

Adams runs into I-35.

Directions to the Home Office: For those of you who have never been to the Home Office, it is located at 520 North Main, which runs north and south through Temple. We are situated across (but not directly across) from the main Post Office and you will see a prominent sign "SPJST Fraternal Life Insurance" on North Main Street and three "lollipop" signs on North 1st Street, however, entrance into our parking lots is only from Main Street.

(Central Avenue divides Temple north and south and Main Street divides it east and west.) There are virtually no one-way streets in Temple. There should be plenty of parking space available in our adjoining lots; if not, additional parking will be available on the parking lot of Texas Bank on 1st Street, which , is just across the street west from the Supreme Lodge Building, and entrance to these spaces may be made from either North 1st Street or from North Third Street, the next street west of and parallel to 1st. We do not advise on-street parking on either Main or 1st Streets.

Those of you coming to the workshops from the South on 1-35, take the Adams Avenue Exit and go east, turn left on Main Street and go about 5 blocks to the Home Office Building at the corner of North Main and French. Those of you coming in from the north on 1-35 should take Exit 303 on the north edge of town and then follow the North 3rd Street signs, come approximately one and one-quarter miles to the second red light, which is French Avenue. Make a left on French and go 2 blocks to North Main and make a right into the parking lots of the Supreme Lodge Building.

Schedule for all sections is as follows: 10 A.M. to 10:45 — Session 15-minute break 11 to 11:45 - Session 12 noon to 12:45 - Session 1 p.m. - noon meal (courtesy Supreme Lodge) At Lodge 47, Seaton - 8 miles east of Temple on Hwy. 53 (Section pictures will also be taken during noon hour) 2 p.m. — final and joint session CONDUCTED BY SUPREME LODGE OFFICERS MAKE A SPECIAL EFFORT TO BE THERE; YOU AND YOUR LODGE WILL BENEFIT BY IT (See accompanying article for details) —Supreme Lodge, SPJST rnodations, please write or call.

8) The museum area can be visited either before the workshops, during the breaks, or at the conclusion of the final session at Seaton Star Hall.

The highway to Star Hall is a direct route and you should be able to make it in the 15 minutes allotted between the last session and the start of the meal there at 1 p.m.

These workshops held in previous years have proven to be mutually beneficial, but of course, you have to attend to get anything out of them. I am sorry to say that some of the lodges have never sent representatives. We, are scheduling the workshops a little earlier this year so as not to conflict with the miloplanting season. Sessions will deal primarily with lodge procedures and administration. Youth work or insurance per se will not be covered since, these two areas are adequately covered in district and state seminars and training classes.

Our national and state laws define a Fraternal Benefit Society as "Having a lodge system with ritualistic work." The more efficient our lodges are, the better we are insuring and guaranteeing our future as a Fraternal Benefit Society. The United States Internal Revenue Code specifies two primary requisites for a Fraternal Benefit Society: "a) Must operate on the lodge system, and b) Provide for the payment of life, sick, accident or other benefits to members or their dependents." Thus we see the specific reference to a "lodge system" and it is through the lodge system that we must operate and improve our services. It behooves every officer mentioned above to attend these workshops as part of his duty and obligation in being , an officer in the local lodg6. We all

learn through these workshops. In the meantime, we would welcome suggestions that any of you might have about what topic or topics to include in any of the sections at the workshops in 1982. Those of you out in the field and on the local lodge level may have some definite ideas as to what needs discussing. If you do, let us know.

Lodge "Dobr9 Zivot" No. 180 Announces December Meeting Our November meeting was called to order by Vice President Jess Taylor in the absence of President Dennis Barabas who was ill.

Flagbearer Joe Russell led us in the Pledge and we remained standing for a moment of silence for departed members.

Roll call of officers was by Secretary Mike Hejl and the minutes were approved as read.

Financial Secretary Mydell Grochoske gave her report.

We welcome these new members to our lodge Ira Michael Cox, Dona Homer, Don Holacka, Susan Jenkins, Leslie Woodard and Leslie Woodard Jr. Board of Trustees "report was made of their October meeting and also on the November 7 dance which was reported to have had a record attendance of 650 people.

The Nominating Committee chairman, Brother Joe Hurtik, passed out the list of nominees that the Nominating Committee had selected and there will be other nominations from the floor if someone wishes to nominate someone else for any of the offices. The election will be held at the December 13 meeting at 2:30p.m., so leth all come and vote for the officer of your choice.

The ladies are asked to bring sweets to this meeting chips and dips and sandwiches will be prepared by the Entertaining Committee.

Just received some sad news that our member, Brother Herbert Janke, passed away this morning due to a heart attack. We express our deepest sympathy to his wife, Sister Celia Janke, and all the family members.

No. 28, East Bernard To Hold Election of Officers Lodge

Dear Members: It is that time of year again! The lodge will hold its anhual meeting Sunday, December 6th, in its hall, at 2 p.m. The main item on the agenda will be the election of officers to serve the lodge for the year of 1982.

It is urged that those members, of our lodge, who wish to take part in these elections, be present.- The "Clan" will gather after the meeting to socialize.

The November meeting, on the first, saw all reports given accepted.

A motion to have ham and sausage for the December meeting was made and passed. Attendance at the meeting was good with some new faces present.

The lodge furnished some of the sandwiches and refreshments and the lodge sisters furnished the rest of the food to make the "Gathering" a success. A big thanks goes to Sisters Sperlik, Sabrsula, Schank, Haverda, Kortis, Valigura, Brdecka, Luquette and Nezval for this. This writer was at his usual- post of assisting in the making of the sandwiches.

There were two door prizes given, one by the lodge and a pot plant by Brother Anton J. Kelner and his wife. Sister Haverda won the lodge prize and Brother Schank won the pot plant. Our thanks to Brother Kelner for the prize.

Lodge No. 29 Members Plan Yuletide Activities/ Meeting

Dear Members: President Edwin Adamek called our regular monthly meeting to order Sunday, November 1 at 4 p.m.

Michael Lefner and Troy Marx, representing the youth club, presented the flag and joined the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers showed all present.

The minutes of the previous meeting was read and the treasurer's report and property report was also given.

New applicants for the past month were: Kimberly Renee Holubec, Ruth Psencik, and Robert D. Psencik as a social member. Michael Kasper transferred to Lodge No. 39, Bryan.

Youth Club report was given by Youth Leader Melvin Steger. He reported that there were 36 members, six adults, one visitor and one new member present at the meeting. They elected a Christmas Party Committee and they voted to give Kleenex to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I for Christmas. The Youth Club attended the District II Skating Party at Temple and also visited the museum. This month the club will have a skating party in Taylor with several surrounding youth clubs participating. They will also practice for their Christmas Program and have their Youth Club meeting Saturday, December 12, and have the Christmas Party Sunday, December 13.

The lodge will have their meeting, followed by a Christmas Party Sunday, December 13, starting at 2 p.m. There will be a short meeting followed by a Christmas Program by the Youth Club; supper will be served about 5 p.m.; a dance will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., with music by The King of Swing.

Meeting Planned for Bleiberville Lodge Annual

Lodge No. 33 Bleiberville will hold its annual meeting Sunday, December 13 beginning at 10:30 a.m.

For the noon meal, a free chicken stew will be served to all Lodge No. 33 certificate-holding members; other family members will be asked to make a donation of $2 for adults and $1 for ages 6 through 12, also bring your bowls and spoons.

Dear Members: Our regular monthly meeting of Lodge Tyrs No. 80 was held Sunday, November 1 at 2 p.m.

President Bohac called the meeting to order at that time, with all the officers present.

The minutes from the October meeting were read by Treasurer Glen Latham; there were no additions or corrections, they were adopted as read.

Jenifer Jones was accepted as a new member and Brit Liles took out additional insurance.

The members of our lodge decided to have the Christmas Party, Friday evening, December 11, starting at 4 p.m. Due to the beer wholesale prices going up, it was also decided to sell the beer at 75 cents at our entertainments.

All the chairmen of the various committees gave their reports at the meeting.

Our annual picnic, which we always have in May each year, was partially discussed; more on this matter at our December meeting.

Dear Members: Don't forget that at our December meeting, which will be December 6, is the election of officers for our lodge, so please keep this in mind and come to the meeting. A good turnout will be appreciated.

There were no other matters to be discussed and the meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m. to be held again on the first Sunday, December 6,1981.

A detailed report on the booths at the Peanut Festival was given.

Wednesday, December 2 1981 — VRST/s4K/5 A donation to the Memorial Fund in memory of Reuben Lesikar was given by the Robert Bayer family.

Plans on acquiring new heaters and replacing the windows in the hall were discussed. Albert Sralla is to check on the heaters and President Bayer is to look into the window situation.

A donation to the Heart Monitor Fund at the Floresville Memorial Hospital was given.

Our December meeting will be a social along with election of officers.

Chips, dips, and all snack foods will be on the menu; drinks to be furnished by the lodge. Each family is asked to bring food: sandwiches, cookies, chips, dips or anything else they may want to munch on.

Dear Brother Editor and Readers: Since there are no reports to the Vestnik, at my present writing, of our local fraternal activities and no one to replace my voluntary writing, I am coming again with a few lines.

I wonder, why there is not someone to take a tablet, pen and/or pencil and write to the Vestnik/ It is our organization for it belongs equally to all of us. To be disinterested in these affairs, is a bad step for our prosperous Society. I wish that there will be someone to replace me.

I started mailing my letters in 1908

to the newspaper entitled, "Svoboda" to. La Grange, Texas and, nobody furnished me material or postage stamps, only refund for postage I received was when I served 16 years as secretary for the local SPJST Lodge No. 56 (now disbanded). I appreciate all the compliments that I have received and have been asked to continue; however, my vision is getting poor.

The meeting held November 11, 1981 was poorly-attended.

Recording Secretary Mack Munson and the financial-secretary were excused. There were two new members accepted. We had the honor to have four visitors: Sister Helen Pavelka, Brother Eugene and Sister Thelma Hrncir and their youngest daughter, Angie, all from Robstown Lodge No. 117. Sister Thelma is District VII director and she made an informative report, also Brother Eugene, who serves as rest home director, made a report on the two S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes; applause followed.

The next meeting, which will be an annual meeting, of Lodge No. 79 will be held December 9 at 7 p.m.

The officers and committees will be elected and appointed for the year 1982.

We set the date for the Christmas Party which will be held December 20 in the afternoon. The attendants are asked to help fill the kitchen tables with their products, just as before for the past Christmas Parties. This, program is sponsored by local Sokol Unit, SPJST Lodge No. 79 and SVPS. Santa Claus will assist in distributing the paper bags with goodies. The membership and their friends are cordially invited.

Academy Lodge Sets Date for December Meeting/Election of Officers The November 11, 1981 Lodge No. 177 meeting was called to order by President Jerry Tomastik. We had a very nice turnout of members for this meeting.

All officers and all committee chairmen were present.

All committee chairmen gave their reports which were very good.

We had two benefit events for Brian Was hbourne and Jessica Montgomery Washbourne and Thausa Montgomery Washbourne; one was a dance with all proceeds going to the family, and a game night with all proceeds also going to the family. The benefits were great successes. Thanks to everyone who donated food, money, and who worked at these benefits; everything was greatly appreciated.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU! A get-well card was sent to Billy Joe Moore. We wish Billy Joe a speedy recovery.

Dwayne Sefcik gave the Board of Trustees' report. A new carpet will be installed on the stage and in the entry hall. New Year's Eve Dance tickets will be printed and go on sale, the price for the tickets will be $8 per ticket; the Gentres will play and there will be hats and noisemakers.

Youth Leader Pat Tomastik gave the Youth Club report. There were 16 youngsters present with two new members, Bryan Ralston and Michelle Ralston. The club members voted to have a Pizza Party at Mr. Gatti's and those wishing to attend the dance did so; the party was held November 18. The clubbers also discussed having a Christmas Party for one of the rest homes, this will be discussed more at the next meeting.

The young members are also doing a fine job selling Christmas wrapping paper.

Our lodge Christmas Party will be held December 18, so make arrangements to attend. The party is for members and their families.

Everyone stood in silence a moment for the veterans.

New Offspring Added To Stasa's Family My grandson Allen J. Stasa of Victoria, Texas, notified me September 30, 1981 that I have become a great-grandfather for the tenth time when Jessica Ann, their second daughter was born to Allen J. and Laura Stasa. He said, "We all will see you in the latter part of October."

Friday, October 30, I had another telephone call stating: "We will be there this afternoon." It was a pleasure to see all of them in good health and happy as usual.

Jessica has a sister, age 2 years, who loves her very much. (During this occasion, I filled out the application for membership to SPJST Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi; the certificate is already in our hands.)

Then we went visiting his parents (my son Johnny and his dear wife, Elsie). In no time there were 18 persons present. It was a wonderful moment for all of us.

Laura, Jessica's mother, is employed in a bank at Victoria and she has a six-week leave of absence.

They (Allen J. and family) returned home on the same day.

News From Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, Pasadena Dear Brothers and Sisters: A big hello from all of us at Lodge No. 172 and how is everyone everywhere? We hope fine in life, health and happiness. Be careful and take care and drive safely at 55 and save a life to get home in one piece from the streets while shopping during the Christmas days. And, surely, most of all, on our super freeways and turnpikes out-of-state, so all of you traveling and we here can enjoy our Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. Always play it safe with 55 to save a life of others and yours (that's for sure). Don't be a victim of consequences!

Susan Pike was a contestant in the "Miss Tomball" pageant. Susan, we are all happy you were in the pageant.

Jeffery Tolson, yours truly's grandson, will celebrate his first birthday December 3, 1981. He is the first grandchild I have been able to be around all the time, so you know I am learning how to be a grandma. It sure does make you want to kiss their tears away when they are corrected, but I am happy that Wayne and Janice are starting early to teach Jeffery to mind.

If any of the members are ill or have illness in the family, may you soon be up and about. At the present time I am confined at home all because of, a small piece of orange peel. I slipped on it at work and now I have to watch the leaves stack up in the yard, but I still have hopes of being able to get back to my yard work.

My children and their families were with me over the Labor Day weekend. It was the first time we've been together since Christmas 1973.

It was a happy time, but still a sad time; my son-in-law's mother was very ill then and passed away the last of October.

Secretary Helen Pavelka read the minutes which were accepted with no change.

Four new members, composed of two men and two women, were accepted. We are accepting new members in the meetings and we would appreciate seeing all the new members to be loyal and interested to relieve the older members who were active from the start in 1929.

Women's Director Nancy Sijansky's report was accepted with applause, when she said: "Forty-four gymnasts attended classes every Tuesday and Thursday nights (majority girls)! The boys are interested moe in ballgames."

We need a young man for Men's Director. Sister Nancy is assisted by four young ladies. She also announced that they are planning an Entertainment Program.

Three organizations engaged to sponsor a Christmas Party will be.

Sokol, SPJST Lodge No. 79 and SVPS No 30. Santa Claus will assist in distributing the paper bags with the goodies. The attendants are asked to help with their products to supply the kitchen for the social meal.

Seaton Choral Group It has been traditional with the club to go caroling during the Christmas season, whether at rest homes or to shut-in SPJST members at their homes. This year we opted for the latter.

December 8, we will meet at Bill and Lillian Kosarek's home at or before 6 p.m. We will leave at 6:15 to East Central Avenue where several members live within a 4 or 5 block area and walk from home to home as used to be the custom. Choral attire need not be worn.

In the event of rain or very cold weather that day, we have set the same schedule for Thursday, December 10, again weather permitting.

This is a fraternal as well as spiritual and fun doing, and hopefully, choral members, many of you will be able to come.

Ladies' Circle of Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth The day of our meeting arrived with just a touch Of the crisp coolness of the weather yet to come.

The sun shone brightly to add to the cheerfulness of our festive occasion.

This was the day that we gathered together to celebrate our Thanksgiving dinner at the Silver Creek Restaurant. Thanks again to our committee for providing us with such a nice place to meet and enjoy ourselves.

After our dinner we returned to the National Hall for our business meeting and game session.

Our meeting was called to order by our President, Julie Dueser. She appointed the Nominating Committee to select officers for next year. They are Helen Paprskar, Catherine Smith and Maggie Konecny.

Our Circle was saddened to learn of the death of one of our active members, Robert Ruzicka. We wish to extend our most sincere sympathy to the Ruzicka family.

Several of our members have

been sick with bad colds and the "Flu". We do hope they will soon be well.

Thanks a lot to Lillie McMillen for doing an outstanding job this year in sending cards and reporting on our sick members both at home and in the hospital.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Flora Koci, Ida Mayer, Lillie McMillen and Agnes Merlick.

Door prize was won by Phylis Cihacek. Our visitor was Emma Demetruk.

Don and Mary Powers have just returned from Iowa where they attended a Bird Show.

Congratulations to Arthur and Tillie Gillis on their 50th Anniversary, November 22nd. May they have many more.

It was voted that each member and visitor bring at least a $3 gift to exchange.

Czech Heritage Society of South Texas Held Its Meeting My good-hearted son-in-law Roy H. Peal took me to the quarterly meeting held November 15, 1981, in the Moravian Hall in Corpus Christi.

Inside the building there was a table with Mrs. Betty Jurica and another lady who were in charge to register the covered dishes to supply the kitchen for a social supper after the meeting and program; persons without these donated covered dishes, were charged $3 a plate; all of those who helped to supply the kitchen food received a free meal ticket.

There were several persons who got the tables and chairs ready for the audience; they were Secretary Helen Pavelka, President Albert Brandesky and a few others, bartenders were also ready to serve cold drinks and a few ladies were in the kitchen.

My table with the chair was near the stage. In a short time the tables were occupied. My companions were the dear 6-member family of Mr. and Mrs. Matheny with their three adopted children and their grandmother and great-grandmother, Mrs. Kolar from San Diego, California. She is, at the present time, visiting the above-named Matheny family. Her son, Henry Kolar, is a professor in the University teaching music. He was here in the SPJST-Sokol Hall, December 31,1979. Professor Kolar, his dear daughter, Jane Matheny and three children, my loving daughter, Lillie Huber, had occupied my reserved table. These named persons are Sokol members and very sociable. Mrs. Kolar, 84 years of age, is in good health and a friendly person. She speaks perfect English, but she enjoyed speaking her mother language. Mrs. Kolar said that she is a subscriber to "Hospodar" and reads my letters published in it. The world is getting smaller and smaller all the time.

I had the feeling of being a 16-yearold boy at the Schillers' home; popular songs never get old!

After this example by the singers, the singers received more requests for various songs for someone.

I had a friendly handshake with Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bittersman and some singers, also many others. Mr. Bittersman is a charter member of the Victoria singers. In 1978-79 he held Czech classes in the Del Mar College.

Friendship Mr. Method and Mrs. Maxine Snapka came to me to ask, if I wrote the letter about the Snapka family to the Vestnik, about a year ago? My answer was: "Yes." Then there was a friendly handshake and thanks.

Method said that their dear daughter, Cathy, is also at their table. When he departed, I asked if I could see her. She came to my table and we had a conversation; her occupation is a lawyer. When she was in Texarkana, Texas and visited her lovely parents, we became acquainted in the SPJST-Sokol Hall; now she is employed in the law office of Guy Allison at 920 Leopard, Corpus Christi, Texas 78401.

Wednesday, December 2, 1981 -- VESTNIK/9 looked around if there, were Mr. Eddie Knapek and his dear spouse, Christine. Monday morning, November 16, I learned from Mrs. Helen Pavelka, secretary of the Czech Heritage Soceity, that Monday morning Mrs. Knapek had a heart attack and was taken to the Spohn Hospital. Later I called Mr. Knapek and he said she is better.

(Dear Christine, for some time, was in the hospital a few times. Before this, she had surgery on her eyes, November 20.) I had a telephone talk with Mr. Eddie Knapek and he said that his dear spouse, Christine, is feeling better.

Knapek's Family Mrs. Christine Knapek, age, 74, was born in Texas, also Mr. Eddie Knapek was born in Texas in the West vicinity of McLennan County.

Before World War II, many families from the Abbott, Penelope, Tours, West, etc., communities moved to Corpus Christi and made no mistake. (Mrs. Knapek's maiden name is Bezdek.) Her nephew, Robert (Bob) Bezdek is a professor at the Corpus Christi State University; often he is asked for advice by the City Council of Corpus Christi, Commerce and Independent School District. His father, Henry Bezdek, died in 1981.

The Bezdeks, Knapeks, Snapkas, Urbanovskys and Pavelkas are all related families. The Knapeks are well-known as leaders in many organizations: school, church, and sponsors at the wedding dance marches. With these named and unnamed activities, they have built an unforgettable monument.

At 7 p.m., my dear Dennis Stasa's spouse, Donna, took me home. On the way we stopped at their home.

From there, at 8:30, Dennis took me to my lovely home. My sincere thanks to all who expressed their friendship to me.

FEATURES (Bro. Sefcik: I recently read about the passing of Frank J. Malina, a Brenham native. Mr. Malina certainly brought credit to the Czechs, because of his national and international reputation and prominence as a pioneer in our early aerospace efforts. Besides that, he was from Texas. I think our members would like to know of his passing, because he is always mentioned in a list of prominent Czech-Texans.

Frank Malina Dies Famous Texas-Czech Aerospace Technologist Frank J. Malina, 69, a native of Brenham, and a pioneer in aerospace technology died Monday, Nov. 9, 1981 at his home in Paris, France.

Malina was a scientific pioneer in the early days of U.S. efforts to develop rockets that would one day carry man into space. He and the late Theodore von Karman founded

what is now the jet propulsion laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. and the Aero Jet General Corp., the first U.S. rocket engine manufacturer.

Besides his work in science, Malina was also an artist and was a developer of kinetic art. He was also in his 14th year as editor and publisher of "Leonardo" an art journal which he founded.

Survivors include his mother, Caroline Malina of Brenham; his wife, Marjorie Malina of Paris; two sons, Dr. Roger Malina of Berkley, Calif., Alan Malina of Guineabisau, Africa; a sister, Mrs. Smith Mercer of Houston; two nephews, Smith A. Mercer, Jr. and Thomas Frank Mercer, both of Houston.

Memorial services were held Thursday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at Brenham Memorial chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Moerbe officiating.

—From the Shiner Gazette) -SPJST(Bro. Sefcik: Many of us are aware of the annual Veterans Day celebration held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in the small Czech community of Praha near Flatonia.

The event has attracted almost nationwide attention. This year was no exception. I am sorry that I was not able to attend due to previous family commitments. The latest issue of the Lavaca County TribuneHerald, published in Hallettsville, carried a very interesting article by Linda Anthony, staff writer for the Austin American-Statesman. I think the article is extremely well written.

Ms. Anthony has captured the true spirit and feeling of the occasion and the people she talked to at the observance expressed their sincere patriotic feeling without being too effusive or "gushing". This Praha observance was captured in colored photos and a special feature article in an issue of Texas Highways, either last year or the year before. I have had the pleasure of meeting Father Marcus Valenta when we were judges at a Taylor Barbecue CookOff a year or two ago. He is a most memorable individual and really a very impressive figure. He is the driving force behind this annual observance. I particularly like the quotation attributed to a disabled veteran who attended this year's celebration. I felt as though I had been there in person. This was the 26th year of the Veterans Day celebration at Praha. I believe that patriotism is slowly but surely coming back into Vogue and is not, and should not, be considered as "corny" or outdated. According to several newspapers from around Texas that I receive here in the Home Office, there were a number of Veterans Day celebrations around Texas. I'm glad Ms. Anthony attended and wrote the article and I thank the Lavaca County TribuneHerald for reprinting it. Use as much of the article as you deem fit.

Pearl Harbor still strikes in the hearts of Praha veterans

By LINDA ANTHONY American-Statesman Staff PRAHA —It was all a little too realistic for A.E. Miller. As the lowflying plane with a red rising sun emblazoned on its sides swooped over the little cemetery and circled

the church steeple, he felt he was stepping back 40 years.

"I was in the office typing up reports when the alarm sounded," recalled Miller, who during the attack on Pearl Harbor 40 years ago was stationed on board the USS Helena.

"When I got up onto the deck there was so much confusion it was hard to tell what was going on said Miller, 64, of Austin.

But it didn't take long for him to find out that a torpedo had torn a gaping hole in the side of his ship and sunk the ship moored next to it.

"I scrambled over to my machine gun as fast as I could. We kept getting strafed and bombed. It's something I'll never forget. We lost about 100 men that day. Watching that plane made the hair on the back of my neck stand up."

Sunday was the first time Miller attended the annual Veterans Day celebration here and after watching the hour-long ceremony, he said it wouldn't be his last.

"For some reason, it gets more special to me. When you get further away from what happened that day, and during those years, you get more nostalgic.

I'm more apprehensive about the international climate today, and I saw what happened when you're not prepared for war. I don't want to see it happen again." *** For 67-year-old Malcome Coonie of Round Top, the planes Sunday were "a clincher in a very inspirational ceremony."

A disabled veteran who served in the Pacific during World War II, Coonie regularly attends the annual Veterans Day celebration held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in this tiny Czech community nestled outside Flatonia.

"This is something I wouldn't miss for the world. When they start playing the "Star Spangled Banner," I get itchy all over. I think everybody should get a funny feeling when they hear that song. I don't know. Maybe I'm just a diehard patriot, but I think more people should participate in ceremonies like this." *** As the plane made its final circle over the more than 5,000 people, Flo Windel brushed a tear from her eye and sighed.

"I can't help it, but every time I see those planes, the hair on my neck comes up," said the wife of a Pearl Harbor survivior.

"I just can't keep the hair from rising up and we've come to this ceremony I don't know how many times. My husband was aboard a ship when Pearl Harbor was bombed and he had the late watch that day and was asleep in his bunk when the bombs fell.

"He told me he ran out on deck to his machine gun wearing only his underwear and socks. His ship was strafed all morning, but luckily he wasn't hit. A real close friend of ours wasn't so lucky and was killed that day." *** Sunday's ceremonies began with a partial .re-enactment of the bombing of Pearl Harbor as a bomber plunged down toward the crowd, and ended as the same plalie shot skyward, symbolizing the pilot who gave his life for his country.

Between the aerial acrobatics, Maj. Gen. John E. Taylor, Jr., commander of Bergstrom Air Force Base, addressed the crowd. So did the Rev. Marcus A. Velenta, the 76year old pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church who has been the driving force behind the annual ceremony for 26 years.

Members of the community placed wreaths on the graves of the nine Praha men who lost their lives in World War II, and the 2nd Armored Division Band of Fort Hood played throughout the ceremony. The closing prayer was administered by San Antonio Archbishop Patrick Flores.

Praha recalls days of war

By LINDA ANTHONY American-Statesman Staff PRAHA — As the low-hanging clouds darkened, people in the crowd outside St. Mary's Catholic Church craned their necks, searching for the source of the distant growl.

Suddenly the speck on the horizon loomed larger, and onlookers in the cemetery of this Czech village outside Flatonia got their first glimpse of a lone bomber with the insignia of a red rising sun.

"It kind of makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up," said A. E. Miller, who drove 70 miles from Austin on Sunday to attend what may be Texas' largest Veterans Day celebration. "It's just a little too realistic."

Miller should know, for when the bombs fell on Pearl Harbor he was ,a member of a Marine detachment aboard the USS Helena.

For the Rev. Marcus A. Valenta, the 76-year-old priest of the town's church and the driving force behind the annual observance, the planes and partial re-enactment of the bombing of Pearl Harbor 40 years ago held special significance.

On that sunny December day, Valenta had just finished celebrating Mass when the whine of low-flying planes and the crackle of gunfire ripped the early morning calm.

"It's something you never forget," he said. "You will always remember those sounds and you can never get it out of your mind."

And for 26 years, Valenta has tried to make sure folks in this Czech village don't forget the horrors of war.

"We have to keep alive the memories of those boys who didn't come back. Today's turnout showed that we succeeded," he said. A crowd estimated at 5,000 gathered Sunday around the tiny cemetery.

The hour-long ceremony regularly draws contingents of veterans and service organizations from across the state to honor those who died in this country's wars. For the town's residents, the observance has special significance: Nine Praha men lost their lives in World War II. "I've seen a change in this country," Maj. Gen. John E. Taylor, Jr., commander of Bergstrom Air Force Base, said at the ceremony.

"There's a new spirit of patriotism and you can see that spirit in those who come here to pay tribute to family, friends or neighbors who gave their lives for their country."

And it was that spirit that prompted Herschel Blackwell of Houston to attend Praha's ceremony.

November 14 we took a trip to the Corpus Christi Museum and saw the Pua's Keolaomaui Polynesian Dancers. After we toured the museum, we went to the Cole Park where we got to play. Later we all had a picnic lunch. It was a fun-day.

The Youth Clubbers brought food items for the food basket for a needy family.

Our next project will be gifts to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes; the gifts will be taken by Youth Leader Eugene Hrncir.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 87, in behalf of the officers and entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family'of HOMER O. PLENTL, who passed away October 23, 1981, at his home.

He lived in the Killeen area since 1942 and operated Avenue Cleaners from 1949 to 1972. A World War II veteran, Mr. Plentl served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion, SPJST Lodge No. 87, and First United Methodist Church of Killeen.

Survivors include his widow, Joy Plentl, of Killeen; a son, Darby Plentl, of Dallas; a daughter, Beverly Ingram, of Killeen; two sisters, Dewey McElwrath and Mrs. Fred Hefti, both of Cameron; and eleven grandchildren.

Items of Interest Kubiak's Report The inheritance tax is a very unfair tax that is designed to hurt those people who have worked hard all of their life and would like to pass to their heirs the fruits of this labor.

Last session I co-authored a measure to provide some relief to Texans. HB 325 which was approved by the Legislature and signed by the Governor and is now in effect. This bill abolished the state inheritance tax. However, federal law states that if the state wishes, a portion of the federal tax collected may be retained in that state. Should the state not retain this revenue then it would go to Washington. So, in Texas a small percentage of the tax is kept here rather than going to the federal government.

The federal tax will be the next problem to tackle. Currently, an exemption of 175,000 is provided.

This will increase to 225,000 next year. I would like to see the federal tax done away with, or at the very least see the exemptions increased. I am encouraging people to write their Congressman and Senators and express how they feel on this matter. *** Once again the issue of prison reform is in the news. The Justice Dept. in Washington has come out in favor of a ruling made by federal judge William Wayne Justice in Tyler. The main complaints about the prisons deal with security and overcrowding. There is no doubt that we have a problem with overcrowding. Over 2,000 inmates are now living in tents. The Justice Dept. has also endorsed the concept of each prisoner having a private cell. Should this be approved the cost to the Texas taxpayer would be tremendous. I do believe that the prisoners should have a decent place to live and be given the proper medical care. However, I do not think that these criminals should be pampered and given any special considerations. It is amazing that a single federal judge could have this type of power. Of course Judge Justice never says where the money for all of the improvements will come from. But we all know it will be the taxpayer. The last session of the Legislature saw new large appropriations made to the Department of Corrections to take care of these problems. I believe we can reach an equitable solution without the help of a federal judge.

Landowners and Hunters Can Census Deer Thousands of hunters go into the field each year in pursuit of the No. 1 big game animal in Texas — the white-tailed deer. Many hours of recreation are provided in hunting this animal, which yields literally millions of pounds of venison, With care in handling, the meat an be high q uality table fare, says.

Wednesday, December 2, 1981 — VESTNIK/11 Dr. Milo Shult, wildlife specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

One question that always concerns both the hunter and landowner — how many deer should be harvested from a particular area to ensure healthy populations and continued harvestable surpluses?

The answer to this question can be partially determined by estimating the number of deer present on a given piece of rangeland. Such es timates can be arrived at through census techniques, explains Shult.

"Because of their wild characteristics, and relatively wide dispersal, numbers of animals like deer are estimated by sampling. That is, deer are counted in a given area and the density figures are applied to all area land that has basically the same vegetative type and land use patterns. Such estimates are subject to some error since all animals present cannot be counted.

Nevertheless, information gained from counting deer in the same way and at the same time of the year will show population trends through time which are suitable for management purposes," Shult adds.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department conducts deer counts in all areas of the state where the animals range. These figures are available for hunters and landowners to make management decisions, the specialist explains. "Some individuals may, wish to have specific records for land on which they hunt on or own. If that is the case, these individuals can set up their own deer census program and keep their records on which to base harvest decisions," contends Shult.

"The most popular census methods involve counting deer on a predetermined strip of land. Based on the method, to be used, one or more census lines are established which will give a representative sample of the deer habitat on a given ranch. For example, if a ranch is onefourth dense cover and the remaining three-fourths relatively open cover, the estimate should reflect both, these habitat types," Shult points out.

The Hahn walking line is perhaps the most widely used technique in Texas for estimating deer numbers.

It is most accurate in areas of relatively high deer densities such as the Edwards Plateau, he adds.

The technique involves establishing a line as an east-west axis and marking the line (such as spray painting rocks) so that it can be used again and again. The line should be 1 to 3 miles long with a two mile line being optimum. Two people can establish the line and determine how much acreage it covers. At each 100 pace-mark on the line, one observer stays on the line and the other walks out at a right angle. When the walker disappears from view in the brush, the line man signals him to stop and the distance walked gives the visibility at that point. The procedure is repeated on the other side of the line," Shult explains.

When all the visible distances have been determined, an average width of the transect can be determined. When the length of the strip and average width are known, the area or acreage visible on the line can be easily calculated.

"The line is walked at least twice (and preferably more times) in September or October. The alker

starts 30 minutes prior to sundown and walks from west to east (with the sun at his back). All deer seen are recorded as bucks, does, fawns, or undetermined. Dividing the number of deer by the number of acres will give the density in acres per deer. The ratio of bucks to does is equally important to determine the desirable sex ratio in the harvest," the wildlife specialist says.

Vehicles can be used to count deer along ranch roads in a manner somewhat similar to a walking line. The procedures are the same except visibility distances are estimated at one-tenth mile intervals. An evening mobile count is good for composition data (i.e., buck:doe ratios and doe:fawn ratios), he adds.

Density figures can also be determined after dark with the use of a spotlight. Aircraft or high intensity lights are used with the count starting 45 minutes to one hour after sunset. "This technique should never be used however, without first notifying neighbors and the local game warden that the count is going to be conducted. Firearms should not be carried in vehicles for spot light counts," Shult warns.

These and other techniques can all be employed to estimate deer numbers. Assistance in establishing the appropriate technique for a given ranch can be obtained by contacting an Extension Service wildlife specialist through the local county Extension agent's office.

Hunting Records Can Help Evaluate Deer Management What can a landowner do to improve deer quality on his ranch?

Where, have all the big bucks gone?

Why are all the deer smaller than they used to be?

These questions and others like them are frequently asked by deer hunters and landowners, says Dr. Milo Shult, wildlife specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. "There are no simple answers and the changes seen in deer herd quality may be due to a variety of reasons.Whatever the reason(s), any management changes should be monitored to see if they are having the desired effects," he emphasizes.

"The hunter and landowner are partners in deer management and one important partnership element to determine the effects of management is a good set of records on animals harvested. Records kept on a year-to-year basis are valuable tools which the hunter can help provide," Shult says.

"While records need not be elaborate, some items should be included to make the information useful. For example, all deer should be weighed. Usually weights are recorded on field dressed animals (internal organs removed). In addition to weight, the general body condition (good, fair, poor) should be recorded on some predetermined criteria," the Texas A&M University specialist suggests.

The antler characteristics of males are important to note. "For example, the hunter might record the number of points on each beam, the circumference of the antlers at the base above the burr, and the inside spread at the widest point of the main beam. A small steel tape is

all that is necessary to accomplish this," he says.

Probably the most important information to record is the age of the deer. "Without this the other data tell very little about the input of management on a herd. We don't know if we have young animals doing well on good range or older animals doing 'fair to middlin' on poor to marginal range," Shult emphasizes.

Deer are aged on the basis of replacement and wear of the jaw teeth (not on the incisors or front teeth). The local county Extension agent or an Extension wildlife specialist can assist the landowner or hunter in learning the technique.

A publication, L-782, "To Age a Deer" is available from the local county Extension office.

Once all the information is gathered on the deer harvested, the data can be broken down by age classes and sex. "For example, the hunter or landowner can see at a glance what the average weight of 11/2-year-old bucks is and what the average antler characteristics are in that age class," Shult says.

By maintaining these and other records (deer density figures, range conditions, livestock stocking rates, brush control practices, etc.) the hunters and landowners can accurately evaluate the results of their management efforts on the deer herd, he adds.

Hunter Influences Deer Meat Quality Deer hunting provides many hours of outdoor recreation for Texas sportsmen each year. Besides providing recreation, deer harvested also yield a huge resource in terms of table fare—venison.

The potential yield runs in the neighborhood of 11 million pounds of boneless deer meat annually, points out Dr. Milo Shult, wildlife specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

Quality, of venison is not determined solely by the culinary talents of the homemaker, Shult emphasizes. "The entire process of handling the carcass from field to table can add or detract from the desirability of the final product. The hunter plays an important role in determining whether a deer steak is tender and tasty or tough and badflavored," says Shult.

A recent demonstration conducted by a group of specialists with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service emphasized the effects of handling on deer meat quality.

Thirty-six deer were collected on a permit obtained from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

These deer were treated in several ways with each group of six deer receiving the same treatment.

"Since the hunter cannot control all factors which affect deer meat quality — for example, age of the animal harvested and the like — the treatments were designed to look at only those things which the hunter can control," says the Texas A&M University specialist.

Of the tests run on the carcasses, one of the most interesting was the taste pa'nel test. A panel, consisting of five to eight people, was trained to evaluate meat quality, thewtiven samples of venison from the various treatment groups.

"Only ham and backstrap muscles

were used for testing and each sample was cooked to uniform internal temperature. At no time did panel members know what sample or samples they were evaluating.

The panel rated each sample on the basis of flavor intensity, flavor desirability, juiciness, tenderness and overall satisfaction," Shult pointed out.

Based on evaluations by the panel, the following general recommendations can be made for Texas conditions, says Shult.

1. Whenever a choice is available, select a female animal for less flavor intensity (gaminess). This does not mean that male animals provide undesirable meat, but rather that most consumers may prefer the less intense flavor of the female.

2. Whenever possible place the shot in the neck or head to insure a clean, rapid kill. This prevents postshot stress and also reduces tissue damage considerably.

3. Field dress the animal as soon as possible. If contents of the intestine or paunch have been spilled, the carcass should be rinsed with water. A publication, L-634, entitled "Field Dressing Big Game" is available from local county Extension offices and provides more information.

4. When weather permits, leaving the skin on the carcass will help conserve moisture. However, a little common sense dictates that carcasses should be skinned and covered with a fly proof bag in hot weather if a cooler is not accessible.

Also, a male in the rut may have a strong urine odor on the hind legs and probably should be skinned prior to storage.

5. If the family prefers a somewhat more intense flavor which is similar to aged beef, the carcass may be hung in a locker for about a week before final processing. Again, common sense dictates storage in a clean locker which eliminates contamination of odors from poorly handled carcasses.

These recommendations are not the only way to handle carcasses, Shult emphasizes. For the hunter who has a preferred method which differs somewhat from these recommendations, but whose family is very satisfied with the venison brought home, change is unnecessary.

"If a hunter has no experience in handling deer carcasses, or has had a bad experience with deer meat, these suggestions may provide a means of increasing the utilization of the deer resource. Further suggestions on care and cooking of venison can be found in the publication MP1333, "Big Game Cooking Care" which is also available from the county Extension office," Shult reminds.

Nebyla to pfekvapenka, neb sedrn mesicu pied narozenim mi dali vedet, ze eekajf ptirtistek "ratolest" do rodiny.

V patek dopoledne dne 30. tijna jsem dostal zase telefonni zpravu, ptijedou odpoledne. Na zdtimnuti po obede jako obyeejne, nebylo v ten den pomySleni. U teto ptiletitosti jsme vypinili zadost o elenstvi k SPJST radu cislo 79. v Corpus Christi, Texas. Certifikat byl vystaven a zaslan tajemnikovi Mack Munson dne 9. listcpadu a nato zaslan Jessica

Stasa, Victoria, Texas. K veceru jsme jeli k memu synovi Johnny a jeho manklce Elsie.

Tam, v ten veeer, se nas sjelo 18 gratulanta ptivitat a zhlednout novou svetoobeanku. Jeji dvouleta sesttieka Vanessa, ma velkou radost mit tak milou spoleenici. Jejich matka Laura Sicko Stasa, mi tekla, je klidna; vet'S'inu easu Ze prospi. Ona ma zarnestnani v bance, kde dostala S - esti-tydenni prazdniny. Citi se zdrava a §tastna. Mel jsem velkou radost nas vkchni pozorovat. Mnoho zdravi a S" testi do budoucna v'km pteje prastatik Stasa.

Nedeli, dne 15. listopadu, 1981 byla pro mne a mnoho jinych jedna z tech na ktere se tak hned nezapomina,.

Jednota Ceskeho Dedictvi Janiho Texasu, poradala svoji etvrtletni pravidelnou schazi v sini Moravan v Corpus Christi, Texas v 1:30. Maj dobrosrdeeny zet' Roy H. Peal mne tam dovezl. Uvnitt sine u dveti byl still a dye spolkove pracovnice, Betty Juticova a je§te druha (jmeno mi nezname). Ony mely na starosti odebirat pokrmy pro spoleenou yeeeri; na to jim byly daily vstupenky. Nav'Stevnici, kteti nedonesli jidlo do kuchyne si museli listek koupit za $3. tali'''.

Po tomto vytizeni jsem sel hledat vhodne volne mist() pro sedeni a cestou se setkal s tajemnici tohoto spolku, pi. Helen Pavelkovou, s ptedsedou p. Albert Brandesky a je§te s nekolika jinyrni co stall na okoli. Zaujal jsem prazdne misto u stolu poblit" jeviste.

Den pred touto schazi telefonem jsem a po2adal pi. Helen Pavelkovou a elena teditelskeho vyboru p. Albin Jano§ka jestli by mohli pro me nahrat odpoledni program na cassette magnetickern pasku. Jeliko2 strojek co mela pi. Pavelkova byl na baterie, tak ten byl pouZit pro cely program.

Strojek p. Jano'Ska byl na eletriku, tak to jemu dktrilo praci spojovat s draty. Bylo tam vice videt tech cassette pou'Zivanych na nekolik a stolech. P. Jerry Elzner ptisel za mnou nee schaze zaeala; pfehral mi pisne na jeho strojku cassette ty ktere nacvieujf.

V kratkosti maj prazdny stul byl zapinern sestielemou rodinou ptibuzni p. Henry Kaiak, ze San Diego, Californie, ktery jako profesor hudby vyueuje na universite studenty hudbe ocl roku 1979; on byl naVStivit svoji vnueku Jane Matheny zde v Corpus Christi. U -Leto ptilaitosti prosttednictvim novin se dozvedel, kde 31. prosince v SPJST a Sokolovne v sini bude program, a jako den Sokola se ptihlasil mezi nas. Byl tehdy se svoji vnuekou u na§eho stolu. Mel jsem velkou radost poznat jeho milou matku 84 letou dobte vyhliZejici na svaj vek. Tentokrat pan': Kolatova je na nav'Steve u sve mile vnueky Jane Matheny.

Pant Kolatovi mi tekla k odebird "Hospodat" a v nem ete moje dopisy.

Byli jsme si hned bli2sf v naSi znamosti. Pan Matheny je yyslouZily na,motnik 20 let. Tam se vyueil eletrildtem. Soueasne je dobte zamestnan; nemajf vlastni deti, ale si tti ptivlastnili; nejstar'§i dcerku a dva chlapce.

Ptedseda Albert Brandesky zahajil schazi ye 2:30 za ptitomnosti vgech atednikri a YYboru. Vkchny zpra,vy

byly v tichosti a pozorne vyslechnuty a ptijaty. Mistni pevecky sbor ptedvedl nekolik eeskych pisni za vedeni p. Mark Majka. Hymny, "Star Spangled Banner" a "Kde Domov MAT byly zpivany spolecne vkmi ptitomnymi.

Nastala krath ptesta yka. Na jeviste pak vystoupilo asi 18 zpevaka za vedeni p. Motala s doprovoclem na varhany p. Joseph l3ittersmana, vSichni z Victorie. U teto phlaitosti bylo oznameno, Ze pisen "Louka Zelend" je venovana moji maliekosti John Stasa. Tato pisen byla oblibend u mojich sousedu sedmiMerle rodiny Vine F. a Franti§ky Schillerove na farme pH Buckholts, Texas. Jedna dcera FrantiSka u2 byla vdaria a jeden syn Ludvik byl ZenatY. Syn Vilern byl doma svobodny a 4 dcery: Emilie, Hermina, Olga a Sidonie, byly doma a svobodne.

V'Sichni tito deti byli zpevaci a hudebnici. Olga mojeho start 16 roku ovladala piano a varhany. Ona v kostele Cesko-Morav§ti Bratti, doprovazela na varhany zpev.

Mel jsem zpev i hudbu vidycky rad; tam straYil mnoho hodin pti zpevnich a hudebnfch hodinach. Tato pisen "Louka Zelena" mne zavedla zpet do roku 1907. Popularni pisne nikdy nestarnou!

Posluchaei zpevu vyuzili tohoto okarnZiku, kdyi prinasli listky zpevakam co si pteji slykt. Ja nevim kdo mi nechal zazpivat; byly to asi dve hodne maminky mi nezname, co spoleene sly k jeviS'ti odevzdat jejich radost zpevakum. (Jak jsem se jig zminil, ie nevim kdo byly ty dye hodne maminky, co mi daly zazpivat piseri "Louka Zelena," na tu vzdalenost muj zrak je slaby. Rad bych se jim osobne ne'eirn odvdeeil, ale bez vYsledku. Snad se najde nekdo, kdo je zna a nebo se any samy Ovkm ze by to byla dalsSi radost pro mne vedet kdo je to tak dobrosrdeend osoba.

S mankly Joseph Bittersmanovi jsem si podal ruce pti jejich ptichodu a pti odchodu. Pan Bittersman zde vyueoval eeskou skolu v Del Mar College, po dva roky: 1978 a 1979.

Podanim ruky ptivital se asi s polovici tech zpevaku, kdy2 z jeviste se vraceli ke svym stolam• Mankle Method a Maxina Snapkovi prisli mi podekovat za dopis ktery jsem napsal o jejich mile dceti Kathy Snapka a zaslal do novin k uvetejneni. Sleena 24 leta ptisla mne take ptivitat. Nak znarnost vznikla v roku 1980. Ona tehdy byla zamestnana v atadovne pravnicke spoleenosti v meste Texarkana, Texas. Tehdy byla na navSteve u svych milych radial a spoleene se zueastnili zabayniho podniku v SPJST a Sokolove sini.

Ona nynf je doma u svych rodiea, je svobodna, a ma zamestnani v pravnicke atadovne Guy Allison, 920 Leopard, Corpus Christi, Texas 78401. Sleena (Miss) Kathy se zajimala o moji vnueka Paula Huber ktera dne 18. dubna 1981 se provdala za Randy Nicholson, ktera take studovale zakony na statni universite v Austinu a ptitomne je zamestnana u statniho odboru pravnickeho pro vySettovani.

Tato ptitomna generace (pokoleni) ma nyni dobrou ptilelitost vystudovat a takto dosahnout toho, co nam statsim pokoleni nebylo umoZneno. Snalivi a poctivi zamestnanci jsou hledani, pro odborovou praci. Ne2 jsem se rozloueil se vkmi tak pH odchodu vymenil v nove znamosti nekolik slov s panem Elekm, Menem peveckeho

sboru z Victorie. (Znaval jsem dve rodiny Elekvy jednu na farme Oscar (Osker) vychodne" od Temple. Tam bydlela rodina Tomak Ele§a. On mel bratra Steparia; ten farmatil v osade Holubice, mezi mesty Rosenberg a Needville. Meli jednoho syna a jednu dceru. Schazeli jsme se pti tancovaeldch, ktere se konaly v domech. P. Pekat , Ptihoda a Mazac se postarali o malou 8 galonovu beeieku piva, k muzice byla pouZita tahaci harmonika. KaZdy kdo umel neco zahrat mel ptilelitost se nechat slykt a videt. Tento zpevak EleS z Victorie, je ptibuzny tech Ele§it zhora jmenovanych (Je ten Texas i pH sve velikosti jeS'te malt'.) Na konci chci vtele, vS'em podekovat za ptatelstvi ktere mi projevili.

Nesmfm zde opomenout Majkovu kapelu ktera, na mne nezapomina, venovat mi jedno hudebni eislo, kdy2 jsem ptitomen tam, kde oni vyhravaji k tanci; vaZeny ptitel Albin Janokk se o mne staral, jestli se mam jak dostavit do to schaze a druhy take yak* ptitel Bill Spencer se o mne staral jak se dostat doma. Muj zet', Roy Peal a vnuk Dennis Stasa se o mne postarili; srdeene diky vkm.

Projevene ptatelstvi a ochota mezi mnoha na Ss imi spokov3r. mi pracovnIky prodluZuje maj zajem v tom svetovem Beni. Rozhlizel jsem se, zdali tam zahlednu maniely Eddie a Kristinu Knapekovi, ale nebyli tam.

Na druhy den tajemnice tohoto spolku, pi. Helen Pavelkova, mi, v rozmluve telefonni, sdelila ze pi.

Kristinka v nedeli byla narychlo dovezena, do nemocnice. Srdeeni zachvat ohroluje zbytek jejiho zdarneho a plodneho 2ivota. V pondeli 16. listopadu jeji rnilujici mantel mi sdelil ze se naleza na ceste k uzdraveni. Uprimne ji vkchni, co ji zname ptejeme, aby se rychle uzdravila a navratila ke svemu rnilernu Eddovi, kde vlidny domov na ni eeld. Jeji diveijmeno je Bezdekova rozend v okoli West, Texas. (Jeji bratr Henry je otec Roberta, profesor.

Kratce pied druhou svetovou velkou mnoho na§inca se nastehovalo zde do Corpus Christi, Texas. Rodina Bezdekova je zde 'Siroko znama. Jeji synovec Robert (Bob) Bezdek je profesor a uei v Corpus Christi na statni universite. Obeas je Zadan nejvice ye spornych zalelitostech o radu. Mankle Knapkovi na po2adani a za slova "Pan Bah Zaplat'" mnohym parkum poslouZili pH svatebnfch okazalostech, ye spolcich, v kostelnich povinnostech. S daverou a poctivym jednanim si zde buduji nehynouci pomnik. Nalekji zaroven i do sptiznene rodiny Urbanovsky. JiZ tecky filosof "Socrates" se v davne dobe vyslovil, Ze poctiveho lidskeho tvora musi hledat i ve dne s lucernou v ruce.

Karlu Vackovi bylo letos v bkeznu sedmdesat devet let. Svoje nadanf zkejme zdedil po etyfech generacfch hudebnich ptedkil. Sam prisel s muzikou do styku u2 od malieka.

Tatfnek byl kla y frnf truhlat (na nastroji, kterY pozdeji pro syna udelal, vznikla slavna. Cikanka), hral na fletnu a na kontrabas, s maminkou chodili zpf-vat do zpevackych spolkfr a hrali ochotnicky divadlo, i star§f sestra Karla Vacka rada zplvala.

"Zplva dodnes," tika Karel Vacek, "je jf estaosmdesat. At' jsme bydleli v Liberci nebo pak v Praze, tatinek chodil hrat s kapelami a muzikanti chodili k nam tak se stalo, 2e jsem mel skion k to `obyeejne' muzice, kterou jsem potad sly§el kolem sebe. Na housle a na klarinet jsem mel ueitele z orchestru Narodnfho divadla, zbytek jsem se naueil sam. A tak jsem pozdeji, jako hudebnik z poVolanf, hral na housle, violu, kontrabas, klarinet, saxofon, trubku, lesnf rob, pozoun, tubu a bicf nastroje.
