Our Pilgrim Fathers set the stage in this country for a national holiday by their first public display of gratitude that was destined to inspire a nationwide holiday for the entire country from sea to sea. The Pilgrims, faced with a cold winter, realized, that with the help of the gifts from the friendly Indians, their life was better than they had anticipated and gave thanks for the good things in life.

Alas, the kindness of those Indians to those first white settlers was sadly rewarded in years and decades later.

Nothing can be an adequate substitute for a sincere "thank you" from grateful recipients of a gift, a courtesy or a kind word. It is left up to each individual to express freely what is in the heart and mind as a clear cut obligation to their rewards in life.

Unlimited generosity of nature can never be matched by man's limited efforts. Nevertheless, man's grateful response to love is invariably rewarded by untold blessings not only in a lifetime but it is extended throughout all eternity.

As we anticipate another "Thanksgiving Day" throughout a nation that was founded on the principles of faith, justice and freedom, let us join our hearts and minds in giving thanks to the bounties of nature and a people who, though imperfect, sinful, weak and often indifferent, acknowledge before the w world that they have both the desire and will to become truly the people of Peace and Good-Will.

May Thanksgiving Day be always an inspiring con remora, of a lime of gratitude for rich harvests, peace of

mind and soul, as well as of enduring hope of peace, security and prosperity for our beloved country, the United States, the home of the brave and the free.

We have not lost faith in the future destiny of our land that is dedicated to liberty and justice for all, but we must all march together as a united people whose faith must remain shaken in a world of turmoil, doubt, uncertainty, suffering and bloodshed. We must face the future with patient courage, endurance and trust. *** Thankfulness is a wonderfully warm and profoundly decent thing. To feel it, and express it, is a blessing of the highest order. For to be grateful is to be happy.

Thankfulness is a reflection from the mind that realizes man's insignificance. Such a mind, holding itself receptive to the infinite, receives guidance and protection and provision. Men whose lives are lighted by such illimitable trust place themselves beyond the pettiness in which human misery is bred. They are happy men. For this benison they give thanks.

Thus does chain reaction fill man's life with goodness and contentment. A grateful heart will initiate it. Rather than wait for some especially bountiful gift from Providence, let us be thankful for what we already have, remembering that much good may come from heartfelt thanksgiving for simple, little things.

People are not given to one another for keeps, they are loaned to one another by Life, their master. If they abuse that privilege, if they bicker and argue and are under illusion that they give more than receive, then perhaps their sense of values is wrong. For just being with the one we love is reward enough for any effort we make on their behalf, just knowing that they are there, ready to comfort, ready to uplift and help, give us understanding and kindness is sufficient reward and often takes the place of precious gifts. But being fragile people, we become greedy and grasp for more, and often topple the dreams that held the couple's star in the sky, and the therapy is long ant; arduous as a climb ' up a steep mountain, and sometimes the former pinnacle is never reached and leaves a feeling of inadequacy in both.

Although many employers may find it hard to believe, a sizable paycheck isn't the most important thing to workers.

In fact, good pay ranks fifth behind interesting work, full appreciation of work done, a feeling of being in on things, and job security, according to a study by Kenneth Kovach, professor of personnel and labor relations at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. But employees put good pay ahead of promotion and growth, good work conditions, loyalty to employees, help with personal problems and tactful discipline, Dr. Kovach reported.

Executives and managers see things differently. In their view, employees put good pay first, followed by job security, promotion and growth, good work conditions, interesting work, tactful discipline, loyalty to employees, full appreciation of work done, heir --vith personal problems and a feeling of being in on things.

Health Committee: Sister Polly Gaidusek reported that she had sent get-well cards to Sister Leona Nors who was in the hospital with a broken hip. (She has gone home and is doing fine. Take it easy, Sister Leona, and good luck!) She sent a card to Brother Ira Niswinger who has a broken leg; he was hit by a car while escorting school children across the street. (We wish Brother Ira a good recovery so he can be back with us Report of Waco soon. We miss you, Brother Ira.) Board of Trustees are Frank Miller, Ray Orsag, James Pavlicek, Arthur Langlotz, Frank Parma, Leslie Dungan and Frank Kofnovec.

Entertainment Committee consists of George Shilling, Irene Mueller, Ruby Orsag, Leona Nors, Mary Alice Langlotz, Ira Niswanger, Georgia Pavlicek, Polly Gaidusek and Georgia Kofnovec.

Thanks to Sister. Langlotz for putting the names on the board and to Brother Silas Smith, Tim Urbanek and Raymond Shelton for tallying up the votes.

Other committees will be appointed in January.

It was voted not to have a meeting in December due to other events held during the month. The 1982 meeting will be held Sunday, January 17, 1982.

Dallas Lodge Plans Thanksgiving Bake Sale Dear Members and Friends: Lodge No. 84 will have its annual Thanksgiving Bake Sale, Saturday, November 21, 1981 at Rudolph's Meat Market located at 2924 Elm Street from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Members are asked to bring pastries of any type to help make this a great holiday bake sale benefiting our lodge. If you are unable to bake please be sure to come by and purchase some of our fine pastries.

Ft. Worth Lodge No. 154 Sets December 13 Meeting Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan.

All the reports were approved as read.

Brother Don Steinman gave a report on the District III meeting.

The Christmas Program was discussed and will give the date later.

New members accepted were: Whitney Renee Baker and Allen Dale Soukup.

Sister Carolyn Clevland reported on the success of the Halloween Party and thanked all the sisters for their cake donation; the cake walk did fantastic.

The costume winners in order first through fifth place in young group were: Chris Peaton, Ky Clevland, Amy Steinman, Julie Ogburn and Camille Daugherty. In ages 10 through 18 were: Jennifer Powell, Gene Morrison, Stacy Bromlow, Kelly Daugherty and Glenn Yockey.

In the adults winners were: J. C. Mason, Julie Hopkins and Rose Steinman.

Everyone enjoyed the refreshments and a good time was had by all.

We want to wish a speedy recovery to Sister Eva Dockery who had surgery.

Congratulations to Brother David and Sister Bernadette Halford on the arrival of their first child, a son, Bobby Wayne, 7 lbs.-1oz. and 19 inches long. The proud grandparents are Robert and Sister Helen Halford, their first grandchild and Brother Frank and Sister Mary Tesar.

All our recent travelers arrived home safely. Sister Maria Prill returned from a 5-month stay in Germany; Brother Bill and Sister Mary Renfro spent 5 days in Galveston attending a convention; Sisters Jeanie Mason and daughter, Sister Patti Gage, spent 5 days in South Bend, Indiana with Brother Emil and Sister Frances Mamula and family (they took in Chicago and were excited in meeting Phil Donohue and appeared on his show); Benny and Mary Pavey, along with his 4 sisters and spouses surprised his sister, Hattie Havran in Cortez, Colorado for her 80th birthday. A good time was had by all.

Sister Mary Hale had as her guests for several days; her grandson, Brother George Halford, his wife, Pattie and son, from Peoria, Illinois.

We extend our congratulations to Brothers and Sisters: Frankie and Martha Milan on their 12th anniversary on November 8; Don and Rosie Steinman, 38 years; and Benny and Mary Pavey, 46 years.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Sister Minnie Ruzichka and family on the loss of her husband, and to Brother Frank Houzvichka and family on the loss of his son Richard of a sudden heart attack. May they rest in peace.

Sister Mary Hale was the door prize recipient and Carrie Ann Clevland for the Youth Club.

The meeting adjourned with a rain downpour outside, so everyone enjoyed the refreshments, visiting

so, and dominoes. I think we've had enough rain for a while.

Antonio Lodge Plans November/ December Events

San

Lodge No. 133 San Antonio held their monthly meeting Sunday, October 18. The meeting was wellattended with 31 members present.

We were most happy to have such a good attendance and we hope that the number of members will continue increasing every month, because President Matula always makes sure that the meeting is held to the minimum, unless something comes up that needs a lot of discussion. We urge all members to attend their monthly meetings for we are sure that you will enjoy them because we always have refreshments and games party after the meeting.

President Matula opened the October 18 meeting beginning at 2 p.m., which opened with the membership saying the Pledge of Allegiance, also remembering our sisters and brothers'who have passed away, with`a moment of silence.

Reports were given by the secretary and the treasurer; both were accepted as read. Sister Viola Mazac, our treasurer, gave a report that she has received from the Supreme Lodge, regarding a new billing rate. This was done due to the new implementation of the corn puter system.

It was reported that Brother James Kostelnik was not feeling too well, but that he is at home; also Sister Mary Kostelnik who is on the sick list, but doing well at home.

Sister Marcella Kleprlik gave a report on the District VII meeting that was held in San Antonio.

President Matula asked the membership as to their wishes for a "Thanksgiving" dinner. The membership voted on the following: That all members bring a covered dish of vegetables and also a covered dish of pastry, etc. The meat and drinks will be furnished by the lodge, consisting of turkey and dressing. News From Lodge No. 88

Brief

Our monthly meeting Monday, November 9th was well-attended and the established buffet dinner, before the meeting, was, as always, enjoyed by all present. At 6:30 p.m., President Mildred Holeman delivered the Benediction before the meal. The main dish, delicious fried fish, supplied by the lodge and the numerous covered dishes supplied by the attending members, and, not to mention the scrumptious home-baked pastries that are full of calories, but who cares?

This get-together before our meetings is wonderful, it gives us a chance to know each other better and more power to all of us.

Sharply at 7:30 p.m., the meeting convened and all the committee reports were favorable, and especially the Blue Room report by Willie Wehring, at that point we usually have a spell of laughter when the Blue Room reports are presented; no one expects a huge profit from that source. The idea was to have this part of the lodge for the convenience of the members to socialize and know each other better, therefore, the mixed refreshments are reasonable "Very Reasonable" and, of account of that, almost every month we land in red, but this time, behold, Willie reported a profit and out of the red and nicely in black. Before Willie Wehring, Royal Warnasch was the manager of the Blue Room and, when reporting the disaster, he always read it with a joke to the amusement of the assembly and received applause.

The annual meeting was set for Sunday, December 13 and to convene at 10 a.m. with dinner at noon for the attending members.

We always welcome guests at our meetings and this time we were happy to have, in our midst, Katie Kosut, Ann Gerlich, the faithful Sister Albina Hilsher and Victor Gerlich of Lodge 63, Sweet Home.

Quite a few wedding anniversaries were announced and all the celebrating couples pooled together and furnished the refreshments after the meeting. The following are our happy, fortunate anniversary celebrants: Ed and Louise Kadlecek — 52 years; Frank and Mary Tilich-48 years; Gus and Ann Urbanovsky-51 years and, with them in the meeting, they had their lovely granddaughter; Royal and Laura Belle Warnasch, 42 years; Ernest and Margie Anders-33 years; Amos and Della Kadlecek, 39 years; and Ed and Vlasta Zalmanek, 40 years, (they had just returned from a lengthy trip, maybe second honeymoon?) All these lovely people are happy'couples and enjoy life, and the nicest thing no one was reported on the sick list. All in all, it was a nice evening to spend among brothers and sisters.

Our six-member group had another birthday celebrant October 31st (none other than Doris Knapick) and again, we all went in Rosalee Kostom's car (we always explore new places) and drove out to Addicks about 20 miles out of Houston to the newly-opened Coffee Shop named Ant 8z Grasshopper which is a converted and remodeled old frame house into a sunny and comfortable eating place with good food which we all enjoyed.

After eating we looked at all the antiques displayed to be sold to the guests and drove back to Houston to

have coffee and kolache in my humble apartment and visited a while and sang "Happy Birthday" to Doris. This closed our birthday celebrations for this year with hopes we will have the opportunity to make the rounds next year.

Dates to remember: Dances: Lee Roy Matocha, Saturday, November 21st and following Saturday, November 28th, the Vrazels. On social nights (twice), 15 turkeys will be given away to the lucky persons, Thursday, November 19th and December 17th.

Come out and try your luck. There is something going on all the time at Lodge No. 88, so come out and join us!

No. 142, Houston Held Meeting

Lodge

President Mary Ann Kieschnick called our regular monthly meeting to order at 8 p.m., Friday, November 6, 1981.

We had 30 members present, who stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen read the roll call of officers. All were present, except Sister Rosie Tumis, who was out on a cruise to the Bahamas. Hope she has a safe return.

The secretary then read the minutes from the previous meeting.

All officers' reports were given.

Refund checks were read and were to be picked up by all members there so that we could save the 20C postage now.

Youth Club report was given by Youth Leader Henrietta Veselka. She complimented Lodge No. 142 on participation at the District V fall meeting at Lodge No. 88. She also thanked all who helped and participated in the Youth Club Fish Fry that we had at our lodge. Special thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. Eric Stein for the delicious fish and all the frying that they did; also thanks to all who helped to clean up. We all had a very good time.

New applicants for the past month were: Crystal Gale Pitrucha, Christopher W. Behrens, Walter Rosilier, Frank Majorwitz, Kevin Hermis and Erik J. Majorwitz.

We had no report of sick members for the past month. That is good! Let us all stay well. It is very nice to see Sister Mary Brezina up and about after the accident in which she, her husband and granddaughter were involved some time back. Hope that they continue to do well.

The president adjourned the meeting at 8:45 p.m., after we had the capsule drawing for $50 and Ellis Steinhourser was absent; sorry for your absence, but try again next month for the prize.

The consolation prize, this time, went to Alice Jochen. She was present to accept this $5.

The next meeting will be our ANNUAL MEETING, Sunday December 6, 1981. We will have election of officers, vote on Rules and Regulations and renumerations. This will be a very important meeting, so please try to be present. We will have refreshments.

Rowena Lodge No 49 The recently held Flea Market and Arts/Crafts Show at the SPJST Hall in Rowena was a good success.

We had some beautiful hand-made quilts and very pretty hand work of different kinds. We want to thank everyone who helped make it a success in any way.

Our next Flea Market will be held Saturday, December 5 all day. We will again have some Arts & Crafts, also some gifts and ideas for Christmas giving and Christmas decorating. We invite everyone to come and look and/or buy.

Lodge Schedules Annual Meeting and Activities Pasadena

Dear Members: The annual meeting and election of officers for the coming year for Lodge No. 172 will be held Wednesday, December 9 at 911 E. Shaw in Pasadena, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Try to be present at this meeting.

Our Christmas Party will be held December 5, which is on a Saturday night, starting with a covered dish meal at 7 p.m., followed by a free dance at 9 p.m. We will have a band to play for the dance and there will also be door prizes.

In addition to the membership of Lodge No. 172, all members of the Czech Club of San Jacinto College are invited to join us for the evening.

Please bring a meat •and a vegetable or a meat and a dessert, enough for your family and guests.

Dear Members and Friends: Our lodge did not have a letter in the Vestnik for quite a while, but we are still on the map.

Saturday night, November 14, there will be a dance from 8 p.m. to 12 p.m.; music will be provided by Havlak Brothers. They are going to have dances, again; they did not have any dances during the last two months, however, all the churches held their festivals and dances.

We are going to have an Arts/Crafts Day and also Flea Market Saturday, December 5 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.; there will be food all day and the concession stand will be open.

These are held every two months.

The meeting will be held the first Sunday, December 5 at 2 p.m., so come to the fourth quarterly meeting and elect your officers. We will also discuss our Christmas Party.

In the September meeting, we discussed the Ethnic Culture to be held in April at Ballinger and we agreed to bake kolache again. We will finalize our plans in the next meeting.

The hall has a new heating system, new air-conditioners and better lighting; they also added more tables and chairs. We have a social and game night every last Friday night of each month. We also bring sandwiches and snacks. These socials have nice attendance and we hope there will be a better attendance after the cotton harvest. (Everyone forgets about the games and strips cotton!)

The weather was real good. I believe the cotton is about half harvested; the cotton crop is good. But, oh, the price!

Dallas Circle of Czech Women It was a beautiful, sunny fall day, just perfect for our meeting November 5.

President A. Zvolanek called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was repeated. Guests were welcomed and introduced. Our guests were Zdenka Prasifka from Czechoslovakia, Dorothy Prasifka, Marguerite Christe, from Fort Worth, Mrs. Albina Marten, Mary Shelly and Ella M. Faraizl, from Ennis and Mrs. Libbie Wisniewski. Our men guests were Alvin Elsik, Wesley Tupy, George Skotak, Bob Zvolanek, and Miro Jurcik.

Officers' reports were given.

Minutes and treasurer's reports were approved as read.

"Thank-you" notes were read from Sister A. Janecka for the memorial gift sent to S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor, in memory of her husband, American Heart Association for memorial gift in memory of Sister A. Kopecky, Kopecky family for the contribution to the American Heart Fund, Bessie (Kopecky) Tardy for the thoughtfulness shown during her sorrow, Sister Alice Roberts for the nice gift and cards during her stay in the hospital. Bozena Majerova from Bratislava wrote how she enjoyed her visit with our Circle, also a letter from Cal Farley Boys Ranch, telling about some of the boys who are living there.

Membership-secretary reported two new members, Marilyn Parma and Patricia' Wilson, daughters of Sister Rose A. Parma, also who paid dues.

Sunshine Report: 5 various cards were sent during October.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters M. Nesuda, R. A. Parma, E. Raley, L. Smith, and L. Stout. (Lucille Stout's name was not read at the meeting.) Sister R. Bednar did not have her birth date at the time. Sorry, Lucille.

Sisters A. Ozymy, A. Janecka, R. Noska, and V. Tupy were welcomed back after several months' absence.

It was a very lovely traditional Czech wedding. Patti is the niece of Sisters A. Zvolanek, M. Sebestik, V. Tupy, M. Dujka, A. Skrabanek and A. Roberts.

It was good to see Sisters M. Sykora and A. Mach and husband at the wedding.

Sister E. Bartos has returned from a trip to Tennessee, South Carolina and other states. She saw the beautiful Fall foliage, Smoky Mountains, and toured some of the gorgeous homes. Sister L. Slovak and daughter, Elline, plan to visit her daughter in Louisville, Kentucky.

While there, they will attend the horse races. Wish you luck, Libby.

Texas My Reflection On Thoughts When I am looking into the business of our fraternal organization SPJST, I noticed that it is in a prosperous condition, when, at the same time, the country is in an unpleasant economy. Yet, there are more members admitted every day, mortuary fund is over 30 million, surplus over 5 million, and solvency 131 percent, a record height.

Our interested membership, qualified officers should be saluted for their fine efforts; this includes the editor of the Vestnik and insurance sales representatives and Supreme Lodge assistants. Vice

President Brother Bernard M. Gebala is not sleeping on his job; keep it up!

1} Merger of small local lodges should continue in the future. Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas' report in the Vestnik dated October 7, 1981 shows that there were 14 lodges that mailed their monthly dues to the Supreme Lodge in the amount of less than $100 and six lodges under $200 per month. The next SPJST Convention should find some remedy for improvement.

2) At the same time the membership would appreciate raising the premium refund to be distributed to the membership from the six million dollars tied up in the reserve.

3) The form of the Vestnik should be changed to the previous 64-yearold format.

When I had received (in 1940) the first dividend check from the Woodmen of the World (WOW), (a life insurance society) I wrote to the Main Office to stop all my future checks by mail and add my part to the certificate. (In 1916 I assisted in organizing Camp No. 3264 (WOW) at Seaton, Texas), Certificate No. R213415B for $1,000 with signatures

by President J. H. Hurta and Clerk Frank Mares; today the value on the certificate is $1,547.

When I got the first premium refund check from the SPJST Supreme Lodge, I requested that they stop mailing my check to me and instead add them to my certificate; their reply was: "We just can't do that. It will be too much extra work for us." But now, since they have new large office equipment, the membership majority would appreciate this service because it would help pay the funeral expenses. I remember that the certificates were issued only for $250, $500, and $1,000 when SPJST was organized. (I do not remember if there was a certificate for $750.) Now a funeral expense is $2,000 or more.

Supplement What is helping the most in increasing the solvency is the continuous rising rate of money interest.

There was a time when SPJST made property loans at 5 percent. Our rate book of the mortuary premiums was founded on 3 1/2 and 4 percent.

The hired Actuary by the SPJST time to time made his report in the State Conventions. (I do not know what the basis is at this time). At the present time the property loans are not being made to the Supreme Lodge: The Money Market at 16 percent is better investment.

We all know that what is good for some, it is not so good to others, the high interest rate is ruining the United States of America economy.

Since there are so many pictures in the Vestnik with large print, large border and less reading space, there should be added some more pages and better printing grade newspaper and also to use the old format that was satisfactory for 64 years. I hope our prosperous Society can afford it.

Meeting To Be Held For SUPS In Ft. Worth November

Dear Members: At this time, it seems like a lot of people in this area keep hoping that the rains will end. Just as things dry out some, it rains again. For those who have experienced flooding, we do hope the rains will be over for a while.

It is time to remind you of the next meeting of the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association Chapter 9 meeting; it will be held November 22 at 2 p.m. at the Sokol Hall, 6500 Boat Club Road.

The officers will give their reports of the business transacted since the last meeting. There will also be election of officers and committees for the coming year.

The ladies are asked to bring pastries to go with the meal which is served after the meeting and provided by the local chapter.

We were all saddened when we heard that Brother Robert Ruzicka had passed away October 30. He had been ill for quite a while and hospitalized for several weeks.

Brother Ruzicka was one of the auditors of our chapter for a number of years and was serving on that committee at the time of his death. He was also a past president of SPJST Lodge No. 92. Brother Ruzicka was a true fraternalist and was always ready to serve in any way when asked to. He will be missed at our lodge functions. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to his wife, Minnie, and the rest of the family.

Everyone seems to be busier than usual this time of the year but hope all of you will be able to attend the meeting.

Frank Kokesh of our Alvin Czech Class Though one does not realize it, each of us leaves his mark on man's progress in history. What we consider trifles in our lives do effect those around us. Some actions create more lasting indelible impressions — such as the dedication of the Frank Kokesh Estuary Walk which occurred Friday, October 2 at noon.

Harris County Commissioner Tom Bass paid deserved compliments to Frank Kokesh who died January 10, 1981. Kokesh was a long-time resident of Clear Lake area and was an active conservationist. In 1961 he began a tireless, concerned and rewarding leadership job of having 1,800 acres designated a sanctuary of animal and plant life. Armand Bayou Nature Center, near Clear Lake City, Texas was beginning to disappear due to subsidence. Persistent effort is paying big dividends today for future education due to Kokesh's farsightedness.

Frank Kokesh and his wife, Mary Belle, were avid ornithologists.

Added to this, their boundless energy led them to study Czech in our Alvin Community College. After three terms he retired and moved to Indiana to live near their daughter, but his interest in his Czech background never ceased.

Kokesh's tremendous interest seemed to perpetuate itself and develop among other Czech students. We shall all miss our classmate. We shall look back at our involvement with him in Alvin classes and strive to do constructive things to improve the world we call home.

2nd Lt. Kathleen (Metzo) Matula, United States Army Reserve, recently completed four weeks of active duty at Fort Sam Houston Military Medical Corps.

She was joined by her husband, 1st Lt. Emil E. Matula, who came to San Antonio on a 21-day leave from Fort Knox, Ky. While on leave, the couple enjoyed a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emil E. Matula Sr., 303 Gayle; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Popp Jr.; Mr. and Mrs. David Murley; and Miss Margaret Matula.

2nd Lt. Matula gave a surprise party for her husband at the home of his parents. Those present included the couple's infant son, Emil E. Matula III; Mr. and Mrs. Anton Motlock, Taylor; Mrs. Chapes Neal Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Vrana, all from Austin; Mrs. Edward Matula and Ms. Anna Powell, La Vernia; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Matula and sons of Victoria; 1st Lt. George Obar of Fort Hood; and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Popp Jr. and son, Mr. and Mrs. David Murley and Miss Margaret Matula, all of this city.

A first birthday party was given

by Mr. and Mrs. Murley for little Emil with the local members of the family present.

The visitors and Mr. and Mrs. Matula Sr., visited the South Beach at Galveston where they enjoyed a swim at the coast; and the next day went to Texas City and La Marque for visits with Mrs. Joe E. Matula, the great-grandmother of Emil III, and Mr. and Mrs. Gorman Mayes.

The couple visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Metzo, in El Paso before returning to Fort Knox where Lt. Matula is stationed with a U.S. Army Engineer Company.

As an engineer graduate of Trinity University, he was Top ROTC student and received his commission to Fort Knox. He plans to return to civilian life after he completes his four-year ROTC obligation to Uncle Sam. MY AMERICAN CREED

When I lived on the farm near Rosenberg and Beasley in 191243, I was active in helping to organize Lodge Jiri Podebra.dsky No 108 in Rosenberg and, in 1913, Lodge Rozkvet Beasley No 113. My corres pondence with SPJST Supreme Lodge Secretary Brother J. R. Kubena of Fayetteville, Texas resulted favorably.

(The information is on the enclosed post card, which I think much of as a souvenir.)

The second picture was made in Dallas, Texas at the 14th day of the gymnastic course held January, 1931 with 20 men. I knew 9 persons personally, some, many years ago, have passed away (five since 1931).

The third photo was also made the same day. The organizer and instructor for the American Sokol organization was Brother Frank Prihoda who was a very popular Sokol; he was in charge of this course. He taught us many popular songs. For many years he made

his home with his dear spouse at 3542 Grave Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri. He passed away just a few years ago and he is not forgotten in my heart as is the case with all the others named in this letter.

In the fourth picture it was also made the same time. This 14-day course was very unpleasant because the temperature there was under zero degrees. I was at my home with four, school children at that time.

There may be some persons who attended this Sokol gymnastic and athletic course. Whoever will read this article in the Vestnik; could we maybe hear from them?

I think there are many people living who remember the depression. I was farming near Buckholts in the Bryant Station community and, in 1931, sold a bale of cotton (500 pounds) for twenty dollars ($20) a bale. Republican President Hoover said: "Prosperity s just around the corner." (When the Veterans from WWI, who were unemployed, made a demonstrative march to the White House, President Hoover called the Home Guard Troops to run them out. He said: "One pair of blue overall pants and one blue shirt is enough for any one of them.")

Congratulations to Sister Frances McDonald, age 15, of Lodge No 117, Robstown SPJST who had the honor to represent the city of Corpus Christi, Texas in Mexico. "Dear Frances, keep up the fine work!"

President Yvonne Kresta called the meeting to order. The Pledge was led by Marjorie Treurner and Kristine Krpec led the prayer.

The secretary read the minutes and the treasurer gave a report.

Our Thanksgiving contest winners were (6-9): 1st Marcy Dorotik, 2nd Stephanie Roy; (10-12) 1st Jean Dorotik, 2nd Michelle: Srubar; (13-17) 1st Karen Kahanek, 2nd Vicki Dorotik.

The Parent Appreciation Dinner will be held Wednesday, November 18th at 6:30 p.m. That will be our social for the month. Our Tom Watt sales came to an end, and the winners were announced. First place went to Kathy and Billy Joe Billeck with total sales of $434, 2nd place went to Tim Wilson with a total of $419.

We will hold a rehearsal with the Choral Club to learn some Czech songs to be sung in December.

The meeting adjourned at 3:30 and a Happy Hour followed.

TAITON LODGE NO. 30 YC Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club met November 1 at the Taiton Community Center at 2 p.m.

Survivors include four brothers, James Pavlicek, Frank Pavlicek and Joseph Pavlicek of West, Texas and Edward Pavlicek of San Antonio, Texas and two sisters, Bessie Pustejovksy of Abbott, Texas and Frances Ender of Chilton, Texas.

Mr. Brashear, a Temple native, was one of Temple's most active civic leaders and a generous donor to local charitable organizations. He moved his home to Salado about five years ago.

He was praised for all of his fine work for young people and called a "great humanitarian".

Survivors include his widow, Marjory Miller Brashear, of Salado; two sons, A. P. 13rashear III and Randle Talbot Brashear, both of Temple; a daughter, Saranne McCalley, of Fredericksburg, Virginia; three sisters, Mrs. George Simpson of Amarillo, Mrs. Henry Madeley, of Fort Worth, and Mrs. Bill Weise, of Temple; and seven grandchildren.

The family requested memorials be made to McGowen-Stephens School in care of Christ Episcopal Church in Temple.

Visitation was held at HarperTalasek Funeral Home Thursday evening from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

She had been in the Mercy Hospital only nine days and it was a shock to all of us (especially me) because she and I were side-by-side all our lives.

Ella and Henry Belicek were married in Jourdanton October 31, 1936 and lived on a farm for several years; then moved into town. Ella also worked at the Mercy Hospital when it first opened over twenty years ago; she stayed there for 5 years and then her husband opened his own business, Henry's Packing Plant, and there she worked by his side.

Funeral services were, held in the Hurley Chapel in Jourdanton with Rev. Albert Petrich officiating at 10 a.m. November 5. Interment was in the Jourdanton City Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Henry Belicek; sister, Lydia Myska of Jourdanton; one brother, Anton Ventrcek of Pleasanton; and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

of 2609 Macie Street, in Fort Worth, Texas, who died Friday, October 30, 1981 at a local hospital, at the age of 74. He was a native of Buckholts, Texas and moved to Fort Worth in 1941. He worked for Swift & Co. for 29 years until his retirement in 1971.

He was a past president of SPJST Lodge No. 92.

Brother Ruzicka is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie L. Great American Smokeout Day Set For November 19

nationwide to encourage smokers to give up their cigarettes for just one day -- November 19.

The animal's sudden claim to fame was brought about by ACS volunteers wanting to emphasize the Texas identity of the Smokeout.

"Not only does he not smoke, with his size he's a real attention grabber, believe me," said Penny Reeves, Austin radio personality and volunteer coordinator of Smokeout activities in Texas. "In the past we've had some terrific Texans like Lee Trevino and Larry Gatlin as honorary chairmen — but this armadillo, though not a native, represents Texas perhaps more than anyone — or anything?'

A survey conducted by the Gallup organization last year indicatednearly 16.5 million Americans attempted to give up cigarettes on Srnokeout day. Just under 5 million made it the full 24 hours. One to ten days later, 22 million were still not smoking.

In a move sure to break tradition, the American Cancer Society announced today that a real, live 100pound armadillo will serve as honorary chairman of the 1981 Great American Smokeout in Texas.

A native of South America recently acquired by the San Antonio Zoo, the armadillo will lead Texas' participation in the Smokeout, an event sponsored by the ACS

Activities to help further celebrate the smokeless day are planned in most cities and towns throughout the state. Rallies with local celebrities are planned in Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, Dallas and San Antonio.

Other cities and towns are planning similar rallies and events with involvement of Youth Against Cancer (YAC) groups; pledge booths at shopping centers and malls; antismoking educational programs and a

_ Upcoming Deer Season Appears Promising

The upcoming deer season promises to be everything that last year wasn't.

Good forage and better than normal weather conditions should result in better quality deer than a year ago and more of them, according to a Texas Agricultural Extension Service wildlife specialist.

Hunters can even expect better antlered deer from the improved nutrition which is a major contributing factor to their condition.

"Last year's drought effectively reduced the deer numbers in over populated areas," explains Dr. Dwight Guynn. "This year there is more food for each animal which translates into good antler growth for bucks and higher fawn crops for does."

Higher fawn crops generally means the deer herds are immed iately beginning a population increase. Hence, Guynn stresses that landowners and hunters can work toward a larger female harvest this year in order to keep down the increasing deer population where desired.

"Failure to harvest more does in the past seasons led to overpopulated conditions in many parts of the state that results in large dieoffs similar to what happened when the drought hit last year," Guynn says. "Historically, deer harvests in the Hill Country have been about 10% of the population per year.

However, we recommend that 2025% of the deer population be harvested annually just to compensate for reproduction and keep the popu - lation from increasing beyond the food supply."

Guynn, a certified wildlife biologist, headquartered at Texas A&M's Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Uvalde, says it's getting harder each year to predict the type hunting season that hunters can expect. Weather conditions and food availability are major considerations. With a good acorn crop and lush green forage available, deer will feed mostly at night and bed down during the day, making hunting more difficult.

He says an early frost or scarce food conditions during the season usually cause deer to roam more during daylight hours to seek food.

Deer would then be more visible and available to hunters. They could also be more easily drawn to baited stands.

Hunters To Soon Resume Annual Quest

Football may soon have serious competition.

In a few weeks, deer hunters all across the state will relinquish their roles as armchair quarterbacks to renew their annual quest for freshly stocked freezers and handsome wall mounts. Many, however, will be on their first big game hunt and may be somewhat confused over the inordinate amount of hunting paraphernalia to choose from.

So, before taking to the countryside, it's a good idea for all hunters to make sure they have acquired adequate equipment and found it to be in good working order, says Dr. Dwight Guynn, a wildlife specialist based in Uvalde with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

First and foremost is the selection of firearms, assuming, of course, that leases and licenses have been secured.

Guynn suggests choosing a rifle with sufficient caliber (firepower) for a quick, humane kill. He says it's very important to match caliber with one's physical size and shooting experience. Hence, large, heavier men can probably handle larger caliber rifles more accurately than small, petite women.

The most popular deer rifles used today are .243, .270, .30/06 and .30/30 calibers. Selection, of course, varies according to hunting preference, but inexperienced or beginning hunters can choose between these widely used models in good confidence.

Selecting the type rifle "action" depends on the kind of hunting one expects to do. In heavy brush for shots at close range (100 yards or less), a fast handling rifle with pump, lever action or semi-automatic may be appropriate. Guynn says a bolt action rifle is most often considered for open country requiring long accurate shots.

Scope selection, often a critical factor in the successful hunt, is influenced significantly by the terrain. For open country with long distance shooting, Guynn suggests a six- to eight-power scope. Under heavy cover with close shots, an open sight or two-power scope is usually all that's needed. A fourpower scope is very popular because of all-round versatility. Variable power scopes such as the 2x-7x and 3x-9x are very versatile.

Binoculars are a highly underrated item that many hunters often neglect to include in their gear. It allows the hunter to identify parts of deer in heavy brush surroundings and distinguish bucks from does in dim light situations. Guynn says the 7x35 binoculars (7 power with 35rnm objective lens) are the most common type used With so many knives on the market today, selecting the proper hunting knife can be confusing.

Guynn says a five-inch blade is plenty large for dressing and skinning deer. Many hunters, in fact,

use a small "pocket" knife for field dressing purposes. For skinning only, a curved blade is well suited.

Top quality steel knives are usually more expensive than economy models, but hold their sharp edge and are more durable.

Boots, too, are integral parts of the hunter's regalia. Guynn recommends comfortable boots that are well broken in. Vibram or crepe soles, he says, are good choices for providing good footing. Slick leather soles are fine for dancing to the "Cotton Eyed Joe" or "Faded Love" after the hunt, but are mappropriate and dangerous while in the deer stand. Also, choose boots large enough to allow for heavy wool socks in cold weather, the specialist says.

Clothes may very well "make the man" in the business world, but not on a deer, hunt. Guynn prefers the "layered approach" with sweater, vest and light jacket which can be easily removed or added as temperatures change during the day. Bright colors that can be easily detected by deer are to be avoided. Even though deer are color blind, they easily spot differences in color intensity such as white, bright yellow, etc. Instead, wear muted colors such as greens, browns, camoflage, dull reds or red and black check which blend with brush cover. Guynn says blaze orange may be worn as a safety precaution where heavy hunting pressure exists.

Soft textured clothing permits quiet movement for stalking prey.

Brush scraping against stiff canvas pant legs can alarm deer as can the "swish-swish" sound of pant legs rubbing together as the hunter walks.

Tag a deer or turkey carcass immediately after the kill.

Tags can be attached to any part of the carcass so that it won't become detached or defaced during handling or transporting.

A deer or turkey tag should have both sides properly completed, showing the hunter's name on the front, and the name of the ranch and county where the animal was killed, with the month and date of kill cut out on the reverse side.

Tags must remain on the carcass until it reaches the final destination, which is the permanent residence of the hunter or a commercial processing facility.

In counties where taking both gobblers and bearded hens is legal, the beard must remain on the turkey until reaching the final des tination.

No tag may be used more than once; no person may use a tag taken from the hunting license of another person.

The Delaware family average was $59,600 in life insurance protection in 1980, the Council reports.

You are probably using more electricity, gas, and oil than necessary. By using the Big Ten Checklist, you can identify ways of reducing energy use and costs, and help the nation conserve energy. The first six items include actions which you can undertake with little or no expense. Other measures involving expenditures also may result in long-term savings of money and energy.

Weather-stripping/caulking —look for air cracks around doors, windows, and other openings, such as around pipes and ducts. Seal them by caulking* or weather-stripping.* Heat and air conditioning escape through cracks.

Thermostat —set at 65 degrees in winter and at least 5 degrees lower when sleeping or away. (Higher heating temperatures are recommended for homes with sick, elderly, or infants.) Set at 78 degrees in summer. Consider a clock thermostat.* Water heaters — this is a major energy user in the home. Try a lower thermostat setting. Consider an insulation wrap? Install water flow restrictors in showers and faucets. They cut hot water use without affecting family comfort. When replacing water heater, choose an energy-efficient model.

Heating/cooling system —clean or replace filters as needed. Close vents in unused rooms. Insulate * ducts and pipes in unheated spaces. Consider devices * which can increase the efficiency of your existing system. When replacing, choose an energy-efficient model.

Sunlight — keep direct sunlight out in summer; let it in during winter.

Drapes, shutters, awnings, shade trees, glass with reflective film,* and solar screens* help.

Appliances/lighting — fully load dryers and clothes and dish washers.

Turn off unnecessary lights. If replacing, buy energy-efficient appliances and lighting.

7 Attic insulation —check to see if your attic has the recommended level of insulation,* including the attic door.

8 Floors and foundation walls —check for adequate insulation* under floors, around basement, crawl space, and foundation walls.

9 Windows and doors —consider storm windows,* doors,* or double-paned glass' to keep in heat and air conditioning.

10 Exterior walls — consider adding insulation,* particularly when remodeling or re-siding your house.

After completing this checklist, you may want to call your utility, state energy office, or Agricultural Extension Service to obtain general advice on doing the job safely and correctly. For information about energy-efficient products, contac` building material retailers, contractors, fuel dealers, manufacturers, or distributors. Shop for best prices and values.
