Sister Theresa Kovarik was born in Czechoslovakia, October 17, 1885.

Her maiden name was Tlucek. She came to America with her parents at the age of twelve in the year 1897. In 1904 she was married to John Kovarik. She and her husband settled in Lavaca County and took up the occupation of farming.

Sister Kovarik has three children; Lois Sevcik, Hermina Balusek and Albin Kovarik.

Sister Kovarik and her husband joined the SPJST May 9, 1907. Both became members of Lodge Bila Hora No. 16. Brother John Kovarik passed away on January 23, 1957.

Sister Kovarik now resides in the Stevens Convalescent Home in Hallettsville, Texas.

The Supreme Lodge, the members of SPJST Lodge No. 16 and the entire SPJST membership salute Sister Kovarik on her 96th birthday and wish her and her family well.

While on our way home we proceeded to pay a visit to the members at Lodge No. 24 in THE Cyclone.

Veterans understand that many thin gs can and must be done to improve their nation. And, they work towards the goal of equal treatment for all. They know that it is better to build than to destroy; they know that it is better to respect the law than disobey it; they know that by hard work and intelligent action we can stop the crime wave, combat poverty and cleanse our air and water. They also know that it cannot be done by loud talking or violent protests that destroy instead of build.

On Veterans Day we honor all our men and women who fought for us.

We honor all Americans, as well, who help now and have helped in the past carry part of the burden of freedom. We honor their plea for unity, for understanding, and for courage — a courage that carried them through the wars we have fought as well as the courage they had to come home and take up the jobs of building the kind of a country we have today.

We are thankful on Veterans Day for all of those who have helped us keep freedom safe in America.

We wish to inform our readers and members that, in this issue, we are publishing remarks made at the Grand Opening and Dedication of Caldwell Lodge No. 186, Sunday, October 25th because we received the material in time from Brother Morris; we had hoped to have the picture of the new, spacious building to publish at the same time, however, it had not been received at our SL as ate as Friday morning, therefore, we regret that we had to omit it at this time.

For the first time this year, more female high school graduates are planning to concentrate their studies in business and commerce than in health and medicine, according to the College Board's 1981 study of collegebound seniors. A total of 19.4 percent of those interviewed expressed interest in business and commerce, while 19.3 percent chose health and medical fields. Only 8.6 per cent were interested in education, once a favorite field of study for women.

Letter to the Editor Dear Readers and Editor: I have sent in a year's subscription for my good father, Emil Stavinoha Sr. who used to take Vestnik from the very first copies printed; as for myself, I have been reading the Vestnik because I knew the Czech language in reading and writing at the age of 8. I wrote news to Pritel Ditek, Hlas, Hlasatel, Ceska Zena, Svoboda, Novy Domov, Nasinec, and Hospodar. In English I wrote news to Dallas News, Houston Press and San Antonio Light. As a volunteer writer I also worked for Farm Bureau Cotton Association in seven counties with my good father, Emil Stavinoha Sr. of Richmond, Texas and Mr. Joe Hosek of Dallas,

Lodge No. 15 Held Its Meeting

President Ann Balusek called the meeting to order and led us with the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of our departed Supreme Lodge Legal Adviser Brother Reuben Lesikar.

All officers, except Financial Secretary Sidonia Svoboda and Reporter Cecila Marak, were in attendance.

A routine meeting with reading of the minutes and various committee reports being read and accepted were held.

Reported on the sick list were Sidonia Svoboda, Alma Seibert and Louis Svetlik.

Our visitors were Lillie Zajicek and Dan Balusek. We are always happy to have you; come again because visitors are always welcome.

I have been a patient at Fort Sam Houston (Brooke Army Hospital) from 1953 to 1980 and not one day without prescriptions from the doctors; I had broken bones and surgery. I am in my 70s and halfblind and on disability and getting along in some sort of work for many hours each day (7 days a week). I give most of my 24 hours to the Creator.

If possible, Mr. Editor, may I have the pleasure of this letter being printed in the Vestnik and whatever other newspaper you do handle.

She was injured in a hitand-run car accident.

Wednesday, November 4, 1981 — VESTNIK/5 The dinner hosts and hostesses were all so nice and kind, they fed everyone with an extra helping of turkey dinner and many of us ate all the food on the plate. The food was delicious that no one could resist the temptation adding on their plates of cakes, kolache, strudles, etc. We wish to thank John and Pal Hilsher for showing their southern hospitality to everyone at Lodge No. 88.

Whenever we, at Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena, will have ours, we are already inviting everybody from all over Texas in advance to make sure you all come. We let it be known that we enjoy and also appreciate everyone from wherever lodge you are from, we show our real friendliness and our hospitality to each and everytime anyone attends our activities.

Our dances and socials are wellattended by many sisters and brothers from lodges near and far.

Tyrs No. 80 In Holland Reports On Their Meeting Lodge

We held our regular monthly meeting Sunday, October 4 at 2 p.m. at the lodge hall.

The meeting was called to order

by President Bohac. All the members stood up for the Pledge of Allegiance which was recited by all the members present. The president then asked all the members to remain standing in memory of our departed Brother Alvin Martinets, and SPJST Legal Adviser Brother Reuben Lesikar.

Roll call of officers showed all present. They are President Bohac, Vice President Terry Bertrand, Financial Secretary Glenda Liles, Treasurer Glen Latham and Re-porter Joe Barabas.

Minutes of the September meeting were read by Glen Latham.

They were adopted as read.

A thank you card was read from the Alvin Martinets family for the flowers for his funeral.

Brother Latham, our treasurer, gave the financial report for the building and lodge financial standing. He also gave a report for the kitchen income and expenses for the month of September, 1981.

President Bohac gave the report for the bar and dance floor. These reports were all satisfactory.

President Bohac commented on the good work of Brother Moran Burns in keeping the hall yard clean.

There was no other business to tent:to; the meeting adjourned to meet again on the first Sunday in November.

All of us enjoyed the happy hour that followed the adjournment.

Czech Day at Lodge No. 88 is in the past and all the committees are finally relaxed and are very pleased with the huge attendance for this special day. Early Sunday morning heavy rain came down from the heavy cloudy skies and gave the hard-working committees a scary feeling; no wonder, with all the necessary preparations, before Sunday for this annual affair is not a small task. Brother John Hilsher, member of the board, was in charge of the food which is a tremendous job not knowing how many people will attend, but John is a great planner and emerged with flying

colors and the food was delicious as always.

Preparations for this event were in progress since Thursday, Friday and Saturday and the kitchen was swarming with willing helpers mixing pans and pans of dressing for which the cornbread was baked Thursday. Bushels of crisp salad, gallons of sauerkraut, gallons of carrots and peas, gallons of corn and cranberries, too, and all this was served with the deliciously baked turkey by Willie Wehring and his helpers: Larry Green, Sandy Tomacheson, Vernon Sokol and Orman Wilson. The Chandelier Ballroom was nicely-decorated, the speakers' table held the flower arrangements with red carnations and small Czech flags on each side. The decorating in the Chandelier Ballroom was done by Rosalee Kostom with the help of Linda Wehring and Vernon and Vincent Hegwood climbing the high ladder.

The Birthday Club Sisters are grateful for the huge amount of home-baked pastries so generously donated by all these good sisters and loyal friends; also thanks to all the donors of prizes for our sale. Sister Lillian Finn will give her report for the Birthday Club Sisters.

Dinner was served promptly at 11:30 a.m. to the arriving guests. At 12 noon the Czech Concert Orchestra and the Choral Singers were ready to go on the air over KFRD Radio Station with Joe Gavranovic, the Czech announcer.

This broadcast was sponsored by the Liberty Savings Association and Lodge No. 88 from 12 noon to '1 p.m.

The colors were presented by Mark Mynar, King of District V, and Lynn Pflughaupt, Lodge No. 88 Flagbearer; they delivered the Pledge of Allegiance.

The program opened with the National Anthems by our lovely Helen Hegwood. The Proclamation of Czech Day was delivered by Houston Councilman Dale Gorczynski. The performance of the Sokol Gymnastic Team was very much enjoyed with President Emil Kuropata present.

A very interesting Book Review of the "Czech Pioneers of the Southwest" was given by Harlan Maresh, Principal of Hamilton Middle School.

Harlan is the son of the author, the late Dr. H. R. Maresh; the review was well-received. Next speaker on the program was Chuck Schwartz kopf, Information Director of Wharton County Junior College. With his colorful delivery, he had the audience spellbound with "TexCzech And Proud Of It." Both speakers, Harlan Maresh and Chuck Schwartzkopf were rewarded with tremendous applause.

President Mildred Holeman, with the assistance of First Vice President Larry Pflughaupt, unveiled the beautiful Memorial Plaque of deceased members. The Memorial Fund was established by the late President Alfred Hilsher in memory of his deceased brother, Charles Hilsher, in 1961.

by President Mildred Holeman with the assistance of Lodge No. 88 secretary Clara Broz. The following

Herman and Margerite Liebscher enjoyed one week visiting with friends Eddie and Adeline Skeets in Sioux City, Iowa and also enjoyed other acquaintances they met on their trip in Europe a couple of years ago.

Wednesday, November 4, 1981 — VESTNIK/7 Piwetz Building, just a stone's throw from here. The Piwetz Building used to be 2-stories high with a stairway going up on the street side. At that time it housed the Frank Ginzel General Merchandise Store. This building was later remodeled and today houses the Boedeker Insurance Agency and Caldwell Cablevision, Inc. Pictures of the original building and the present building will appear in the history of the SPJST when it is published in book form.

In conclusion, I would like to state that the Supreme Lodge salutes your efforts, the membership across the state salutes your efforts, and those who are unable to be here today are with you in spirit. You know you have a lot of work ahead of you to operate this facility and make a financial "go" of it, but with the energy, spirit and enthusiasm that has been exhibited so far, there is no doubt in my mind that the venture will prove to be a success in every respect.

Lodge 186 President Clint Luksa: Supreme Lodge Officers, members and guests: It's great to see all of you fine folks here. As president of Lodge 186, it gives me a great pleasure to introduce the local lodge officers, (Introduction of lodge officers, Board of Trustees, Building Committee and sales representatives followed).

We are proud to have all of you present. I want to say thanks to the Supreme Lodge for providing financing for this hall and the two local banks for providing interim financing, namely, Caldwell National Bank and First State Bank. I want to thank the Fair Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the City of Caldwell, Burleson County, and all of the fine folks who helped in any way on this project and that includes neighboring lodges that have been very helpful to us.

I would like to read a letter from State Senator Ken Caperton of Bryan, congratulating us on this fine achievement. (Proceeded to read text).

I think everyone will agree that Caldwell and Burleson County needs a facility like this. We have been having skating parties on Saturday afternoon and regular dances on Saturday night. I would like to remind all of you that we have an auction from 4 to 6 and a dance from 6 to 10 with music by the Good Vibrations.

I don't want to omit all of the good people who donated all of these items that you see here on stage. We couldn't have an auction without all these donations. Thanks to the kitchen servers of the food, the people who did the barbecue and those who prepared for this day in so many different ways. Thank you and all of you have a good time.

Director Trcalek: It is indeed a great honor for me to be a part of the dedication ceremony of this new home of Lodge 186, Caldwell. First of all, this lodge home is located in my district, District I of the SPJST. Secondly, it is located in my home town and neighboring community and the

members of this lodge are my neighbors and hopefully my friends.

When the plans were fotimulated for the construction of this facility, you people came to the Supreme Lodge in Temple and asked for financial aid. We, at the Supreme Lodge, agreed to help you because we felt that this is what our forefathers had in mind when they organized this Society — to encourage their local lodges to provide and promote fraternal and social fellowship among their members and to encourage Benevolence and Humanity through the Society with sound practical life insurance for members and neighbors. With this new home you will be able to fulfill these objectives. We made an investment in you and I believe it is a good investment.

I am glad to see so many of my fellow members of the Supreme Lodge here with us today. This shows you that they are interested in you and will be watching your progress.

It took a lot of planning and work on the part of many people to carry out this building project and now that the project is complete, it is incumbent on every member of this lodge to pitch in and help conduct the business of this lodge. I feel that with the officers you have leading this lodge that good things will happen. Get involved and ask your friends and neighbors to join the SPJST and this lodge. After all, life insurance is our business and that is the reason we are here today. Good luck with your new lodge home! *** Caldwell Mayor Bill Broadus: Ladies and Gentlemen: It is indeed a great occasion that we gather for today. The City of Caldwell is proud to see the completion of this fine facility and to recognize the contribution it will make to this entire area. This event has a special meaning to me, since I was a member of Lodge No. 7, one of the three area lodges that merged to form this new lodge.

It seems so short a period of time since we gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony. To those who attended on that day of June 13th, you will remember the heavy rains and the way we tromped through the mud to turn that first shovel of dirt (actually mud that day). Now, today, we gather to dedicate the finished product.

This facility will be greatly used by so many for a wide scope of worthwhile causes. It will bring many hours of happiness and joy to all who use it. I urge you to use it wisely and actively support it, in order that it might always be a viable part of our community life.

As Mayor of the City of Caldwell, I commend Lodge 186 and the entire SPJST organization for your farsightedness, your faith, and your efforts to bring this dream to reality.

Chamber of Commerce President Ray Downy: President Nick, District Director Ben, distinguished visitors and guests — and fellow members of Lodge 186. On behalf of the business community of Caldwell, I add my welcome to those who proceeded me.

It's an honor for me to be here this

afternoon to participate in this dedication ceremony and to see how the hopes and dreams of a few truly concerned people of this community can come to life in the concrete and steel that surrounds us here today.

I commend Willie Gloyna, Clint Luksa and the other members of Lodge 186 who worked so hard to make this day possible — but, I also congratulate Supreme Lodge Pres.

Nick Morris, his officers and directors for realizing a need in our community and agreeing to fill that need. There are a lot of organizations in this world today — competing for our time and contributions . . . but, I think the real test of the worth of any organization (whether it's Fraternal Service, Social, whatever), is the lasting contribution that organization makes to our way of life.

About a year ago we appeared before you and your board, Pres.

Nick — outlining the need for recreational facilities for our youth, young adults, and community in general. Preliminary approval was given to proceed, and some six months ago we came back with a plan and budget. You saw fit to commit the necessary funds ... and this beautiful, multi-purpose facility is the end result. That's what I mean by lasting contribution. You've proved — beyond a doubt — and to all that SPJST is more than just another organization — for you've improved our lives and in turn become a vital part of our community. You did not let Caldwell down and Caldwell will certainly not let you down. This facility will become a focal point for community activities. To underscore that statement — I'm pleased to announce today, that starting next April one of the highlights of spring activities here in Caldwell — our Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet will be held in this building ... and I extend to you, Pres. Nick, an invitation to come and be my special guest at that event.

Again, I'm pleased to have a part in today's ceremonies — and I congratulate all those who worked so diligently to make this day possible.

It's my pleasure now to introduce to you a lady who you will definitely want to get to know. She's been with our chamber only one month, but already she's leaving her mark on our community. Some Final Observations: The weather man certainly cooperated on October 25th by bringing us beautiful weather. A large crowd had come to eat the noon meal, but many did not stay.

They apparently took the food home to eat, so that by the time the dedication ceremonies got under way the crowd had diminished somewhat.

And after the dedication ceremonies were over, the crowd diminished still more. A later report told us that the attendance at the auction was rather small, but that all items were sold. The attendance for the evening dance was sizeable. Those who left for fear of hearing long-winded, drawnout speeches need not have worried. They were all brief and to the point and altogether lasted barely a half hour.

Overall, the day was successful and we hope financially profitable for Lodge 186. Some of the members at Lodge 186 had been working long and hard and they must be given recognition for maintaining their energies and enthusiasm right up to the last minute.

Now the day-to-day work of maintaining the premises, planning the activities, and making a successful financial venture of the new building falls upon the shoulders of all the members of Lodge 186. They've got a good start. We know they can do it.

In the meantime, if you're ever in the Caldwell area, particularly during a weekend, stop at the hall and see what's going on. You'll be well received and welcomed.

They have one son, Bert West, Jr. who lives in Austin and who was the host of the celebration. The couple also has one grandson, John Randolf West; and two step-granddaughters.

Bert and Annie Mae were married August 14, 1931 at the Crockett Courthouse in Crockett.

Loree Kovar, secretary called the roll and read the minutes of the last meeting. Sheri Englemann gave us the treasurer's report.

We had correspondence, thinking of you cards to three of our com munity and birthday cards to seven of our community.

Under old business we discussed State Royalty, which was on Sept.

26th at Taylor; also, we discussed the Burleson County Fair that was the first week in September.

Under new business we talked about going skating some time at a Skating Rink nearby. We announced the opening at the New Caldwell SPJST Hall.

Our speaker was Joey Slovacek, he told us about Halloween.

Our next meeting will be on November 4th at 6:30 p.m. We adjourned with the Lord's Prayer said in unison.

She was ninety-three (93) years of age.

Rosary was said Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Sheffield Funeral Home.

Funeral was held Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Monsignor Arthur Michalka officiated. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery at Cyclone, Texas. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Altar Society.

Survivors include two sons, Lewis Sodek, Sr f T Albin Sodek of Fayetteville; two daughters, Rosie Vasicek and Wilma Machalek, both of Temple; fortyseven (47) grandchildren, twentytwo (22) great-grandchildren, and nine (9) great-great-grandchildren.

Bingo Still Not Legal EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 138 in Ganado, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the brothers of our lodge sister MISS MOLLIE DYBALA, 70, of Houston, who died Monday, October 19, 1981 at 9 a.m. at the Heights Hospital of a heart attack.

She suffered three massive heart attacks with-in a 4-day period.

She was a member of Lodge Vytrvalost No. 138, All Saints Catholic Church, and Catholic Daughters of America.

She leaves to mourn her death: four brothers, Rud. R., Arnold W., and John F., all of Houston and

State Comptroller Bob Bullock's office Thursday warned that it will be early 1982 before Texans can conduct and play legal bingo and cautioned against fraudulent claims that legal bingo has already arrived in Texas.

George Garland, director of the Bingo Regulation Division, said the new bingo law also requires a local option election before games can be held.

He said because of the language in the law the earliest date a local option election can be scheduled would be January 16, 1982.

"Any game before that time and before the sponsor holds a license from the Comptroller's office is an illegal bingo game — like it's always

been," Garland said.

The Legislature this year legalized bingo games sponsored by charitable, educational, religious and civic organizations.

The law also provides that sponsoring organizations must be licensed by the Comptroller's office.

Garland said local option elections to play bingo can be called on a citywide, county or justice of the peace precinct basis.

If approved locally, Garland said, the governing jurisdiction can also impose a two percent gross receipts •tax on the games.

Garland said each applicant for a bingo license will be investigated to assure that the organization qualifies under the law.

"We are not going to permit any fly-by-night operations, and unauthorized games will be subject to the penal code concerning gambling," he said.

"Nothing's legal without a license from the state," he said.

He also said the new law will also limit bingo games to three a week and the amount of prizes in a single game to $500 and $2,500 for a series of games.

Garland said the Comptroller's office would be ready to issue bingo licenses to authorized organizations as soon as local option elections are certified.

He said the agency would also be adopting rules and regulations in time for Texans to conduct legal bingo games.

Hunters Prepare Early Good

With the approach of fall hunting seasons, Texas sportsmen should begin making preparations for their trips afield. These preparations should include more than marking hunting dates on a calendar and contacting landowners about hunting leases. Time and effort should be spent getting field gear and "desk chair physiques" ready for the hunting adventures ahead.

Firearms which have been stored since the last hunting season should be cleaned and checked. It is a good policy to check stored guns every month or so for signs of rust or dust accumulation, particularly if they are kept where temperature and humidity conditions are variable.

Special attention should be given to cleaning the bore and making sure the action works smoothly.

It's time for carefully sighting in rifles and handguns. Even if the hunter feels sure that a gun has not been bumped or jarred since the last firing, it is a good policy to double check. This will not only prevent dis appointment over a missed shot, but will also get the shooter used to the "feel" of his weapon again.

Center-fire rifles should be sighted in using the bullet weights and powder charges which the hunter expects to use in the field.

Sighting distances are determined by the type of game to be hunted and the terrain where the hunt takes place. As a rule of thumb, shot groupings from 50, 100, and 200 yards will prepare the hunter for most situations.

The good hunter does not fire one or two rounds and decide that he and his rifle are ready to go. The

expense of firing a box or two of ammunition while sighting a rifle in is easily justified by the confidence the hunter will gain in his weapon and his shooting ability.

Handgun buffs should also spend some time "burning powder" on the range before taking to the field.

Generally speaking, handguns should be sighted in for distances up to 60 yards. It takes a dedicated pistol shot to be consistently accurate at greater distances.

Remember, range safety is of critical importance with all firearms, but especially so with handguns.

Most hunters carry some type of a cutting tool for dressing game.

These knives, hand axes, bone saws, etc. should be examined carefully and sharpened now A dull knife in the field is not only frustrating, but also is more dangerous than a properly honed one.

Checking wearing apparel well in advance of the day it is needed will not only add to the comfort of the hunt, but may also help preserve marital harmony. Clothing should be checked for snags or tears which need repair from last season.

Footwear is especially important as a painful blister can ruin an otherwise enjoyable hunting experience. Boot stitching should be checked, and the leather should be oiled or treated for comfort and protection. It is a good idea to wear new boots around the house to break them in before starting out on a long days hunt.

In addition to checking his gear, the smart hunter prepares himself physically for the field. Many of us work at jobs which don't allow us to stay in shape for our once-a-year hunting trips. Perhaps the best solution is to start early with sensible exercise. This may mean just walking every day or it may include jogging and dieting off a few pounds for the hunter who will pursue game which requires strenuous effort.

Remember, more hunters die from heart attacks brought on by overexertion than from firearm mishaps.

The sportsman who begins preparing his gear and his body well in advance of hunting season will have a much more rewarding experience in the outdoors come hunting season than the "lastminute Johnny." A little effort now will mean a safer and more profitable hunting experience in the fall.

Upland birds— quail, dove, pheasant, turkey, woodcock or rail — are popular game for Texas hunters.

Proper care of birds in the field and during cooking assures tasty gourmet meals for the family table.

Several steps must be taken immediately following the kill to maintain top eating quality. Game should be field dressed as soon as possible.

For larger birds such as pheasant and turkey, use a knife to cut a slit just below the breastbone and down to and around the vent. Remove all contents of the body cavity. Avoid breaking the gall bladder sac on the liver. Save the gizzard, heart and liver for eating purposes. Place giblets in a plastic bag. Cut near the

Wipe the body cavity clean with a moist cloth or rinse with water.

Moisture spreads bacteria which cause spoilage. Most hunters remove the two oil glands found on the upper surface of the tail or the entire tail structure.

Cool the bird by allowing air to circulate in the body cavity. A small stick inserted in the cavity will help hold it open to speed cooling. Place the birds in a cooler if the outdoor temperature is not cold.

For smaller game birds such as quail, dove, woodcock or rail, hold the, bird in one hand and use the thumb of the other hand to remove entrails and the craw. If the smaller game birds are not dressed in the field, they should be dressed at home the same day.

Big Game Preparation It is fun to try new recipes and to make up some of your own. Expect some failures along with successes when you are "experimenting" with big game cookery. Be sure to write down the recipe for any dish you really enjoyed. General rules for successful cookery of big game are Cook big game the same as lean beef. The tender cuts such as the loin and rib can be pan fried or roasted.

Round steak, meat from the leg and the less tender cuts are best when cooked by moist heat — braising, stewing or pot roasting.

Do not overcook big game meat. It has short fibers that toughen quickly if overcooked or cooked at too high a temperature. Plan to serve it medium- to well-done, never rare or overcooked.

Use acid to tenderize. Vinegar, tomato sauce and French dressing sauces are good for tenderizing big game. Cover slices or chunks of meat and allow to stand in the marinating sauces for at least 24 hours. Pan fry to medium-done.

Reduce the sugar in sauce recipes.

The natural flavor is sweeter than other meat. Sauces made for domestic meats maybe too sweet; use one-fourth less sugar.

Remove all visible fat before cooking. The gamey flavor is exag gerated in the fat. If fat is desired, ground pork or beef fat may be sub stituted.

Big game is a dry meat; moisten to prevent dryness. Chunks of beef fat may be added to self-baste it or the surface may be covered with bacon strips anchored with toothpicks.

Tuesday, June 10, 1980 (1:30 • 3:20 p.m.]

Chairman Pokladnik reconvened the session at 1:30 p.m. and called upon Arnold Vrla (130), chairman of the Finance Committee, to deal with several questions. Arnold Vrla asked if the standing committees that had met on the previous day to the start of the convention were to receive compensation as to the per diem just enacted or as to the previous convention. Norval Crossman (88) made a motion that these standing committees receive the current rate of $90.00. Leander Pflughaupt (88) seconded. Jerome Ermis (88) said he was not in favor of this motion. The vote indicated 118for and 170 against. Motion failed.

Arnold Vrla (130) asked if this would mean the mileage would be 15 cents for coming to the convention and 35 cents going home.

Chairman Pokladnik said the Finance Committee should analyze this.

Arnold Vrla (130) made a motion that the mileage would remain at 35 cents coming and going but the per diem would change as of June 9, 1980. Johnny Broz (88) seconded the motion and the motion passed.

President Morris said that representatives from other fraternals would speak to the delegates tomorrow at 11 a.m, He introduced Ray Klee, Executive Vice President of the National Fraternal Congress of America. Ray Klee brought greetings, best wishes and stated that he enjoyed his association with the executives of the SPJST. He stated, "This organization exemplifies fraternalism and life insurance security." He made several more complimentary remarks. Chairman Pokladník extended an invitation to Ray Klee to stay at our convention longer.

At this point the talent portion of the Miss SPJST competition was held. President Morris asked Timekeeper Jerry Pechal to keep time for the contestants. One of the judges failed to show but the girls chose to perform in front of two judges. The interviews would be conducted later and the speech portion was to be held at 8 p.m. at La Villita. He introduced Mary Cavanaugh (20), 1976 Miss SPJST, to serve as Master of Ceremonies.

Dorothy Massey, State Youth Director, introduced the seven District Youth Coun­ selors: District I • Melinda Wilson District II - Frank Klinkovsky District III • Ed Kamas District IV - Mary Haisler District V • Richard Wahlberg District VI • Elsie Brdecka District VII • Maxine Pavliska.

Mary Cavanaugh welcomed everyone to the talent competition. This was followed by the talent of the individual contestants. After the conclusion of the talent competition, alt contestants were asked to stand in front of the delegates and be recognized.

Chairman Pokladník called upon Ben Jarma (84), Insurance Committee Chairman, to introduce his committee members: District I • Cecil Dickson, vice chairman District· Il • Willie Dusek District IV • Raymond Pavliska District V • Helen Hegwood, secretary District VI • Jerome Hlavaty District VII • Frank Veselka Ben Trcalek (17), chairman of the By-Law

Committee, continued with changes in the by-laws.

ARTICLE4 (e) 2, ~. 4, S and 6 • no change ARTICLE 4 (f) (g) "and (h) • no change ARTICLE S • no change ARTICLE 6 • no change ARTICLE 7 • no change ARTICLE 8 • no change ARTICLE 9 • Delete "in compliance with the wishes of the delegates" and add new (e) "Voice vote." Passed as recommended.

ARTICLE 10 (a) • Delete "Bona Fide" and "to the convention." Emil Matula (133) withdrew the recommendation made by his lodge to change Article 10. Recommendation passed.

ARTICLE 10 (b) • no change ARTICLE 10 (c) - Milton Trammell (176) asked why not delete "to the convention" as we had in 10 (a). The By-Law Committee recommended these words be deleted.

Recommendation passed.

ARTICLE 11 · no change ARTICLE12 (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) • no change ARTICLE 12 (i) • Delete "in places indicated by the convention chairman." Add: "and elect" so that the statement reads: The purpose of these meetings will be to nominate and elect the district director and substitute, member of the commit· tee on by-laws and substitute, member on the Insurance Committee and substitute, member on the Publication Committee and substitute and a member of the Finance Committee and substi­ tute. Each delegate will vote in accordance with Article 4(a-4) of the by-laws.

Also delete "Effective Immediately."

Recommendations carried.

The By-LawCommittee wished to return to Article 10 (c). There was a conflict between the by-laws and the Finance Committee report as to per diem of members of the Supreme Lodge, Editor, and former presidents and vice presidents of the Supreme Lodge. Chairman Pokladnik asked the Parliamentarian Sidney Kacir how to handle this conflict. Parliamen­ tarian Kacir recommended that Article 10 (c) be deleted and then the Finance Committee's report would be part of the finalized minutes.

Johnny Broz (88) made a motion to delete Article 10 (c). Mildred Holeman (88) seconded and the motion carried.

Emil Petr (84) asked why the Finance Committee had not checked the by-laws before making their report.

Raymond Hubenak (92) asked where were the delegates to meet since this portion had been deleted in Article 12 (i). Chairman Pokladník said they would meet on the convention floor and in special assigned rooms.

ARTICLE 12 (j) (k) (1) • no change ARTICLE 13 • no change ARTICLE 14 (a) • Delete "Before the adjournment of the convention delegates of each district will nominate and elect one member and one substitute from their members." Also, delete "for the succeeding convention" and "which were approved by the convention." Add "by-law" and "is elected." New Article 14 (a) will read: A Seven-member by-law committee is elected for the purpose of considering, arranging and recommending of mo­ tions, for amending by-laws by the succeeding convention, eliminating con­ flicts in the by-laws, codifying, rearrang­ ing, and having the by-laws printed.

Norval Crossman (88) asked the reason for this change.

Ben Trcalek (17) said there was repetition and this matter would be picked up later.

Tillie Helmcamp (88) asked who elects the By-Law Committee. Legal Advisor Reuben Lesikar said nothing was taken out of this article, just codified, and who elects the By-LawCommittee is covered in Article 12 (i).

Tillie Helmcamp (88) asked if it was clear that each district elects a by-law committee member. Chairman Pokladník. said yes.

Recommendation carried.

ARTICLE14 (b) - Delete present Article 14 (b) which will be combined with Article 20 (b) to make a new article. Recommendation carried.

ARTICLE 15 - no change ARTICLE16 (a)· Add "Finance, Insurance and Publication," and change "president" to "chairman." Rudy Sefcik (54) said we would then need to make "committee" plural and change "convenes" to "convene." The recommendation carried and will read as follows: The By-Law, Finance, Insurance, and Publication Committees convene im­ mediately after adjournment of the convention and elect from among its members a chairman, vice chairman, and secretary.

ARTICLE 16 (b) • Change to read: The By-Law Committee convenes not

later than January of the convention year, deliberates and decides on all recommendations for amending the by-laws and may also prepare and present its own recommendations for changes, additions or deletion of any articles, and shall publish all recommen­ dations of the committee in the Vestnik 2 months prior to the convention. The committee on by-laws, elected by the preceding convention, will also function during the convention.

Recommendation carried.

ARTICLE 16 (c) - no change ARTICLE 16 (d) · Change to read: Recommendations for changes to the by-laws must be submitted to the secretary of this committee not later than thirty days prior to the convention.

Recommendation carried.

ARTICLE 16 (e) • Change to read: The Secretary shall foward all recom­ mended changes to the by-laws to the Vestnik for publication.

President Morris said he had submitted a change to add: "upon receipt to the Vestnik for publication." The By-LawCommittee said they would keep it as proposed. Recommen­ dation carried.

ARTICLE 16 (f) • Change "Motions" to "Recommendations." King Hegwood (88) asked if this meant that recommendations written in Czech would be published in Czech.

Chairman Pokladnik said the by-laws covered this. Recommendation carried.

ARTICLE 16 (g) · no change ARTICLE17 (a)· Delete "(the articles first adopted and not repealed in the convention shall take precedence over subsequent by-laws enacted, unless earlier by-laws are first repealed)." Recommendation carried.

ARTICLE 17 (b) • Change "all Supreme Lodge officers" to "the Supreme Lodge."

Recommendation carried.

ARTICLE 17 (c) • no change Session was recessed for afternoon break.

Tuesday, June 10, 1980 (3:30p.m •• 5:45 p.m,] Chairman Pokladnik opened the session by

asking the convention secretaries to record in the minutes that the additional flowers on the head table were from Monday night's banquet at the La Villita Assembly Hall.

Chairman Pokladnik turned the floor over to the Chairman of the By-Law Committee, Ben Trcalek.

ARTICLE 18 (a) (b) and (c) • no change Ben Trcalek moved that following Article 18 a new article will read as follows: A 7-member Publication Committee shall outline and report to the convention the format, the editorial policies, and the general usefulness of the Vestnik. Such reports shall be published in the Vestnik two months prior to the convention.

Furthermore, the Publication Committee is charged with the duty to determine what material may be harmful to and against the best interest of the Society.

Henry Vitek (20) asked the question why does the Publication Committee article have to be inserted in this section, to which Ben Trcalek responsed that this is a new article and that the duties of the Publication Committee need to be listed somewhere. Following this discussion, the motion was passed by a show of hands of the delegates present.

ARTICLE 19 - no change Under Article 20 (a) - Ben Trcalek moved that the first paragraph be completely replaced by the following: The Finance Committee is a standing committee and shall meet at least biennially to review the retirement plan and recommend changes to the Supreme Lodge and wilt meet as necessary during the year of the convention, after January 1, for the purpose of reviewing the overall financial posture of the Society.

Having no discussion, the delegates passed the above by a show of hands. The remainder of the article stays as is.

Bratr Frank Fajkus, pfedseda zabavniho vyboru, oznamil finaneni stay vyboru a sestra, Henrietta A. Kalmusova podekovala v§"em kdo pfispeli hlavne peeivem do kuchyne a vkm elenrim pfala dobre chutnani.

Ptedseda tadu, bratr Emil E. Matula, informoval o jednani ye schrizi tiskoveho vyboru a zrninil se bliZe o rozmeru a tisku Vestniku. Na poladani pfedsedy tadu, bratra Emila E. Matuly, rnistoptedseda fadu, bratr William J. Mare, referoval o prribehu schrize nakho okrsku a sestra Marcella M. Kleprlikova, zpravu dopinila pokud se tyka vysledku prodeje chlebickil a peeiva.

Za mesic zaki 1. cenu olochiela sestra Mary Poppova, 2. cenu sestra Viola Fajkusova. Za mesic fijen 1. cenu obdr2e1 bratr Edward Riley, 2. cenu sestra AneZka Poppova.

Ze Menu, narozen3,ch v mesici fijnu, byli pfitomni: sestry Emilie Amburnova,, Marcella M. Kleprlikova, bratki August Blanat a Frank Fajkus. Zazpivali jsme jim "Happy Birthday", pogratulovali a pak si pochutnavali na pkipravenych dobrotach, zapijeli vybornym kaffekem, ktere y'Lly pkipravi bratti Alfred Kalmus a George Schultz a pfi spoleeenske hie jsme se dlouho bavili.

Zasluhou pfedsedy fadu, bratra Emila E. Matuly, jednani melo r3, chly spad, bylo zajimave, velmi tive a pouene. Jeliko2 vkchny zalelitosti byly projednany, na navrh sestry Violy Fajkusove, ktery jsem podporoval, schrize b3rla odroeena ye 3 hodiny 14 minut.

Sestry a bratki, pristf schrize nakho fadu bude se konat v nedeli 15. listopadu ve stejnem miste, t.j.
