Sidney Kacir Appointed Supreme Lodge Legal Adviser George Sidney Kacir, 51, was appointed to fill the unexpired term of the late Reuben B. Lesikar by the Supreme Lodge in their regular meeting Tuesday, October 13th. Bro..

Kacir is well acquainted with legal work for the SPJST, having been a law partner with Bro. Lesikar in the law firm of Lesikar, Kacir, Everton and Bradshaw.

Bro. Kacir is a longtime member of Lodge 87 in Temple. He is an active member of that lodge and our members will also remember him as serving as parliamentarian for the past several conventions. Bro. Kacir was a pilot in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and is married to the former Dorothy Mae Wood. They have three children, namely, Donna Waskow, Linda Kacir, and Dan J. Kacir.

SPJST LODGE NO. 186, "CALDWELL" CALDWELL SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25TH, 1981 (Building located 8/10ths of a mile south of the intersection of Hwys. 36 & 21 on Hwy. 36, approximately 3 blocks after the first railroad underpass going south.)

Celebrants Honored On Anniversary Betty and Rudy Strnadel of Lodge No. 40, Hillje celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, October 4, 1981.

Eight hundred people attended the dinner, reception and dance which was hosted by their seven children, twenty-two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren at the Knights of Columbus in El Campo; music was provided by the Ellinger Combo from Rudy's hometown.

Mrs. Strnadel is the former Betty Baca of nearby Fayetteville, Texas.

Rudy is a retired rice farmer and has been a Lodge No. 40 membe: since his teenage days. In fact as a teenager, he invested his first one hundred dollar savings as a loan to help build the old Hillje Hall at the urging of his father who was active

in founding the lodge.

Rudy is president of the Czech Catholic Home for Aged at Hillje, Texas and has served in that capacity for 20 years. (Information and picture submitted by Sister Joann Schwartzkopf) ***

Slow Down Stay Alert Because Safe Driving Is Everyone's Business!! *** Sunday, October 11, we attended the District V Fall meeting at Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88. It was a nice day and the attendance was fair, however, could have been better; the officers pointed out that the meeting had much in competition with it in the form of football and baseball games, yet, many faithful fraternalists forgot the games for a few hours to attend the meeting.

The entire meeting and program were nice and well-conducted which included a well-received 2-hour program, prior to the meeting, by the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra and Choral Club.

We wish to add a few closing remarks to the host lodge for their accomplishments. Lodge No. 88 has developed into a very important facet of activities for the SPJST in District V. Their record is impressive but no more than the story of the brothers and sisters whose efforts and personal integrity and devotion to fraternalism have contributed so much to make its day a success as well as enjoyable. *** There are three kinds of members in an organization: those who make things happen; those who watch things happen; and those who have no idea what has happened. *** District V President Tillie Helmcamp, in a conversation with yours truly after the meeting, said that her son-in-law Robert Eubank received his Ph.D. from Rice University and is teaching there; in all, he has 4 degrees and her daughter Jeanette Eubank has received her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from the University of Houston.

However, Sister Helmcamp said that the degree they both made her the happiest with was the Pa and Ma degrees they received by having her grandson Brooks Krejci Eubank! *** Another thing we must always consider two pertinent words in the world that are "Yes" and "No." "No" is a door-closing word. When a man says "No" to opportunities to serve, to opportunities to learn, to opportunities to meet people, to opportunities to travel, he is closing the door to his fraternal organization growth and development. "No" is a static, lifeless word. It slams the door to bigger living.

"Yes" is a door-opening word. It is

vital and dynamic. When we say "Yes," we swing the door open to adventure, to experimentation, and to expanding. We step out through the door of "Yes" to wide horizons, new adventures, and deep search for fraternalism. "Yes" is a challenging word. It means taking on burdens, assuming responsibilities, sticking our necks out. Anything can happen and often does, when you say "Yes"! It's a magic word.

One thing to remember in these days of fluctuations of airline-ticket prices: The best way to be sure of getting the price you were quoted is to purchase your ticket at the time of booking. The airlines usually guarantee airfares only for 24 hours.

The exception is when airlines advertise a specific fare as being good for a certain period. *** If you suffer an allergy attach while driving, pull off the road until the sneezing stops, recommends the Transportation Department. During a single sneeze, you would cover 260 yards driving at 55 miles per hour with the car momentarily out of control. During three sneezes in 15mph traffic, you would cover 220 yards. *** Aching, throbbing and burning in your knees, knuckles, and neck could be symptoms of arthritis, but be leery of so-called cures. There's been a lot of progress in understanding the disease, but no cure yet, says an arthritis specialist at George Washington University Medical Center. Beware, he says, of things such as hot-corncob therapy, extract from the New Zeland green-lipped mussel and laser treatment. *** A veteran's survivors can obtain a flag for burial services by filing a claim at any Veterans Administration office or most local post offices. Copies of discharge papers and death certificate are required. *** Installing smoke detectors and preparing a home-escape plan can significantly improve your family's chances of surviving a fire, says the National Safety Council. A free fact sheet contains more information. For a copy, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to: Public Relations Department, National Safety Council, 444 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Ill. 60611. *** What's the difference between an interest rate that's compounded daily and one that's compounded annually?

It's all explained in a 32-page booklet just published by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The booklet, "The Arithmetic of Interest Rates," explains how to calculate the cost of loans, investments and deposits. It's available free from the Public Information Department, the New York Fed., 33 Liberty Street, New York, N.Y. 10045. *** The 1981 tax-deductible mileage rates for automobiles used for business, charitable, medical and moving purposes will be the same as last year, the Internal Revenue Service says. The rates: For business use, 20 cents per mile for the first 15,000 miles and 11 cents for any more than that; for charitable, medical and moving use, 9 cents per mile. The rate for fully depreciated autos is 11 cents per mile for all business use.

SUPREME LODGE

RESOLUTION OF RESPECT WHEREAS, the sceptre of death has invaded the home of our Sister Jeanette Lesikar and has called to life eternal, her husband and Legal Advisor of Supreme Lodge SPJST Brother Reuben B. Lesikar and, WHEREAS, Brother Reuben B. Lesikar left surviving him to mourn his departure, his wife Jeanette, his daughters, Janet Marie (Lesikar) sikar) Huber, his three grandchildren McReynolds and Brenda Elizabeth (Le and other relatives, a host of friends and neighbors, all of whom, with all the members of the Supreme Lodge SPJST desire to record their sorrow at the death on October 3, 1981 of Brother Reuben B. Lesikar, esteemed associate who worked harmoniously and diligently for the good of the Society for many years and was elected as Legal Advisor of the Supreme Lodge in the XXIst Convention in Houston in 1972 and served in that capacity until his death on October 3, 1981; and WHEREAS, all members of the Supreme Lodge SPJST bear willing testimony that Brother Reuben B. Lesikar contributed much to the growth and progress of the Society as Legal Advisor and that he influenced and enriched the Fraternal Benefit System by his good works and high standards and that he was a good man who will be missed and remembered by his many friends mourning his passing.

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST hereby gives its formal expression of sympathy and does hereby note in its records the passing from this life of a loyal member, who was esteemed by his associates, loved by his friends and respected by all.

MINUTES OF THE PUBLICATION COMMITTEE MEETING

Temple, Texas September 26, 1981 The regular meeting of the PubSFM McBride Held Sales Seminars In lication Committee was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Chairman Ed Seymour and Rowena In District IV Mazanec. All members of the Publication Committee were present.

Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, Editor Rudy Sefcik and Publisher Larry Ingram were also present.

The secretary mailed copies of the March 14, 1981 minutes to each Publication Committee member and the minutes were approved as printed.

Publisher Larry Ingram reported that, as of this meeting, the current circulation of the Vestnik is 11,276.

The secretary read a letter from Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris conveying best wishes to all members of the Publication Committee. He regrets that he will be Monday, October 5 at Farmer's State Bank in Seymour. The committee reviewed the letter from Legal Advisor Reuben B. Lesikar written in behalf of the Supreme Lodge to Editor Rudy Sefcik concerning an article that was printed in the Czech section of the Vestnik on page 14 in the July 15, 1981 issue. The Publication Committee discussed the article and felt that the article was not objectionable.

The secretary also read Brother Leonard Mikeska's letter about the Publication Committee's interest in awarding additional length of membership pins to those individuals who have been members sixty or seventy-five years, etc.

than fifty years. The committee decided not to pursue this subject further.

Editor Rudy Sefcik then read a letter that was mailed to him by Brother John Stasa to be read to the Publication Committee. Brother Stasa recommended: 1. Increase the Vestnik by four pages.

2. The headings in the Vestnik to be smaller.

3. That the Vestnik revert back to the old form. This would be the 32-page Vestnik with the pages stapled.

The committee can not act on items 1 and 3 since the size of the Vestnik and the format of the Vestnik is approved by the convention. The last convention approved a 16-page tabloid. The last two or three issues had small headings and Publisher Ingram and Editor Sefcik explained that the last two or three issues had headings in the 12 point size instead of the 18 point size. The Publication Committee does not recommend the Vestnik being published in the small headings. Brother Emil Matula moved, seconded by Sister Sophie Dybala that the headings of articles in the Vestnik be printed in the 18 point type. Passed.

Editor Sefcik then read several complimentary letters that he had received from members.

The Publication Committee set the date of their next meeting for March 20, 1982 in Temple, Texas at 10:00 a.m.

There was no further business to be discussed, the meeting was adjourned.

Kovar Lodge No. 38 For November 8, 1981 meeting, we will have election of officers so all you members come out and elect the officers of your choice. Bring your gripes and problems to the meeting. If you don't like the way things are run, voice your opinions and ideas for a better organization.

We need to grow and with everyone's input, we can build a stronger and better lodge.

We will have a social hour after the meeting and refreshments will be served.

December 13 will be installation of the officers that you elect; we will also have some kind of refreshments at this meeting.

Our present secretary wants to retire and several of you members have voiced a time of change so here is your opportunity to join in the work as well as the fun.

We are considering moving our annual fund-raising supper to the first Sunday in October. We need more participation in the meetings; more members to get involved so here is your chance.

All of the members are important.

We need each and everyone to join the few that really care. Let's make 1982 the best yet.

If you have any kind of ideas to make a better community get together we need to know and will work together to make Kovar, a. larger, more workable lodge.

The meeting starts at 2 p.m., on the second Sunday, November 8.

Cottonwood Lodge No. 6

Dear Members: Lodge No. 6 Cottonwood held its October 4 meeting at 3 p.m. Vice President Rose Uptmor presided due to the absence of President Robert Dobecka who attended a District III officers' meeting in Fort Worth.

Dee Dee and Tammi Dobecka recited the Pledge.

In roll call of officers two were absent. There were 16 members and two guests Steve Dietrich and George Hanzlicek present.

Secretary Barbara Hykel read the minutes of the previous meeting.

They were approved as read.

Correspondence was from District III Treasurer Albert Banik, and Supreme Lodge SecretaryTreasurer Leonard Mikeska.

Treasurer Georgie Wachsmann and Financial-Secretary George Straten gave their reports.

Hall Chairman Alvin Schuetz also presented his monthly report.

In the youth report, Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported the youth will present the Rest Home program Wednesday, October 14.

All the youth members went to the "Homecoming" football game. They will work on their poster for the District III meeting scheduled for October 25. Halloween Party will be held Friday, October 30 and everyone is asked to bring a can of stew.

Birthdays for the month are for Delton Stuckly, Terry and Lanette Hykel. Shirley Dobecka brought the birthday cake.

In the Trustees' report, Brother George Straten gave the report on the Westfest. An ice machine will be delivered and a deep freeze was purchased. The CB dances will continue and they will have a cake auction at this month's dance.

Brother Robert Dobecka, Brother George Straten and Sister Lydia Dobecka, who were in charge of the workers for the Westfest booth, want to thank all those who baked bread and those who worked their shifts in the booth; also thanks to those who peeled potatoes and cooked sausage both days, at the lodge.

New members accepted in the lodge are (Juvenile members): Anthony Harlan Reid, David Dean Reid and Gary Michael Vrana. Adult members are Sharon K. Reid and Robert Harlan Reid; and transfer from juvenile to adult is James Andrea Reid.

The $10 progressive door prize was Bessie Welek and $9 progressive door prize was for Linda Straten; neither was present.

The $2 door prize winner was Deneria Perez.

Next Trustees' meeting will be held Friday, October 30 at 7:30 p.m.; and the next lodge meeting will be held Friday, November 6 at 8 p.m.

Dear Members and Friends: The October regular meeting was called to order by President Alfred Klusacek.

Flagbe'arer Michael Morris and Mark Tepera led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We then remained standing for a minute of silent prayer for our deceased member, Joe Hejl and Reuben Lesikar; Brother Lesikar wasn't our member, but was loved and respected by all of us. We lost a good friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with both families in this time of grief. May their souls rest in Eternal Peace and their memory live among us forever.

Dolores Skrabanek, secretary, read the roll call of officers, sales representatives, and minutes of our last meeting.

Correspondence consisted 'of a "Thank-You" note from the Joe F. Hejl family for the spray of flowers; also a "Thank-You" letter from the Alfred L. Klusacek family for the "Benefit Dance", and for Mortuary receipt. All officers and chairpersons gave satisfactory reports.

Visitors were Ann Balusek and Ann Hejl. We are always happy to have these two ladies with us.

Brother Woodrow Marek gave the Audit report for the past 3 months, which sounded very efficient and thorough. Brother Marek also reported a Work Day for Saturday, October 11 starting at 7 a.m. However, the rains we had might have put a damper on, some of the work that needs to be done around the hall. We had gotten three inches of much-needed rain with prospects of more.

The following were appointed to the Nominating Committee: Henry Mares, Mrs. Louise Marek and Della Mares. There will not be cards sent out this year to eligible members, instead nominations may be made off the floor. The requirements to be eligible to hold office are that you attend one-half of the meetings during the period from November 1, 1980 to October 31, 1981. Of course, all members who pay local dues are eligible to vote. We urge everyone to come and vote. The officers need your support—all year long as well as at election time Members appointed to the R and R Committee are Frank Klinkovsky, Dan Balusek, Anton Vitek, Dorothy Pechal, Robert Heese, Emily Stuteville and Adeline Kohutek. This committee, along with the officers, will meet Monday, October 12.

The members voted to donate $25 to the American Lung Association.

We had a lot of birthdays to recognize in October: Leah Marek, Ruth Janacek, Frank Janacek, Dan Balusek, Thelma Bartosh, Jimmie Pechal, Agnes DePalmer, Leola Kruse and Bill Pechal. Happy Birth day to all of you!

Happy Anniversary also to: Dan and Ann Balusek, Butch and Georgie Sodek, Robert and Evelyn Heese, Alfred and Martha Klusacek and Joe L. and Matilda Sefcik.

Our Christmas Party was discussed. This is always held the second Sunday in December (December 13 this year) for our members.

Willie and Adeline Kohutek will be chairpersons in charge of purchasing and preparing the food with the help of many people, of course.

Youth Leader Shirley Patterson gave the youth report. The youth started selling their Christmas "Showcase." Several members setup "store" around the hall and started taking orders; October 27 is the deadline for these orders.

Dividend checks were read by Sister Skrabanek.

Door prizes were won by Vlasta Hruska and Henry Mares.

Our next meeting will be held November 1 starting at 1 p.m. This is election of officers so be there on time. See you then!

No. 107 Lodge No. 107 held its regular meeting at the lodge hall Sunday, October 4, 1981, at 4:30 p.m.

President Bayer called the meeting to order.

Officers absent were Henry Sralla, treasurer, and Pauline Pavliska, secretary.

Members reported sick are Joe Pavliska, Stanley Chilek and Emma and Mary Zidek. We wish all a speedy recovery.

Minutes were read and approved.

No treasurer's report was given.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer reported that youth clubbers are to make signs for the peanut-shelling contest and that prizes are to be given to the youth dubber selling the most tickets. Final plans for the booths were approved.

President Bayer gave a financial report and activities to be held at the hall were listed.

Bobby Sralla won the door prize.

Dues were paid and refreshments were enjoyed after the meeting adjourned.

Next meeting will be November 1, 1981 at 4 p.m.

Our regular monthly meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m. Sunday, October 4, 1981.

Pledge of Allegiance to our flag was recited by all 49 members and visitors who were present, and all remained standing in honor of Sister Eva Mae Volti and Brother Reuben Lesikar from our Supreme Lodge in Temple. May their souls rest in eternal peace.

We had roll call of officers by Secretary Alice Jochen, who also read the minutes from the previous meeting. All officers' reports were given.

We were sorry to report that several members were sick during the last meeting; namely, Willie Brezina, Earnest Luckemeyer Sr., Nelson Jochen, Melvin Hermis, Amelia Faler, Nancy Cook, Delores Behrens, who had a baby boy; and Carolyn Moreno, who had a fine baby girl and she was welcomed by two little brothers. Congratulations to both of you fine mothers! Those who are on the sick list, we hope everyone is up and about by the time you read this.

We had one new member for the month of September. Welcome to Mary Rosilier and thanks to Brother Sidon Tumis, the sales representative.

Our president announced that the District V meeting at Lodge No. 88 will be Sunday, October 11 and everyone is invited to go. "Take Pride, We Do In District V." We hope to have a good turnout.

The $50 drawing went unclaimed again by Eugene W. Stepanek; sorry you were absent. A $5 consolation prize went to Sister Emily Mynar.

We had barbecue brisket and all the trimmings along with refreshments after the meeting.

Fort Worth Lodge No. 154 Dear Members and Friends: What a wonderful rain we had early this morning.

Our meeting yesterday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan.

The members stood for a moment of silent tribute for Brother Reuben Lesikar, our Supreme Lodge Attorney. May he rest in eternal peace. We just heard of his passing Saturday night. He will be missed.

All reports were approved as read.

Several letters of correspondence were read and discussed.

New members accepted are: Stephen Deitz, James Deitz, Aaron Spivey, Robert Jernigan and Stephanie Ann Mason.

Sister Carolyn Clevland, our youth club leader, reported the Youth Club along with Sokol gymnasts will have a Halloween Party, Saturday, October 31 from 7 to 9 p.m. The youth club will have a cakewalk and ask the sisters to donate a cake; also a bag of candy which will be distributed to all the children, and for refreshments.

Costume prizes will be for ages 10 and under 11 to 18 and adults. There will be a spookhouse for children 5 years of age and over only. Plan to bring your kiddoes.

Brother Milan reminded us of the District III meeting at Lodge No. 92 in Fort Worth, Sunday, October 25.

Congratulations are in order for some proud grandparents, Brother Roy and Sister Lydia Alholm of the arrival of their third grandson, Timothy Quinn, the son of Tony and Kathy Alholm of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; and to Brother Bernard and Agnes Havran of Cortez, Colorado on the arrival of their granddaughter, Haley, the daughter of David and Tommie Havran of Yukon, Oklahoma.

We also were sorry to hear Saturday night about Peggy Hubenak, the daughter-in-law of Brother Richard and Sister Mary Hubenak of Lodge No. 92 who was in a bad car accident in Conroe, Texas.

We pray for her a speedy recovery.

The meeting adjourned to refreshments and the Cowboy game, which they weren't pleased with.

Dear Members and Guests: At sound of the gavel President Harold Bergmann called the October 8, 1981 meeting to order. He also led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Bergmann appointed Edith Pfeiffer to read the minutes and correspondence in absence of Jeanette Schoenst, who wasn't in attendance, due to conflicting activi ties in the community.

Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report.

Both readings were accepted as given.

Dorothy Oltmann reported the financial standing. The refund checks were handed to Sister Oltmann to send to respective recipients. She also stated that she sent a "Get-well" card to Sister Siptak who had been in a hospital, but happy Garda quickly recovered and was at our meeting.

Sister Ruth Whitmann had surgery on her finger is also recuperating. A speedy recovery to everyone that is on the sick list.

Sister Paula Key gave a report on the findings of various PA systems.

The committee was given additional time for further study on that project.

A Special Committee had dance tickets and posters printed for the November 8 entertainment. Dance tickets were distributed to members to sell in advance, and posters to be placed in various business establishments.

If you like an evening of fun for a bargain, buy an advance dance ticket for one dollar for the dance from four to eight p.m. in Round Top Rifle Association Hall with music furnished

by Donnie Wavra and the Hi-Liters Orchestra. Otherwise, at 2 p.m. the same evening, there will be a variety shoot on the hall grounds.

The president has appointed a

working committee for the variety shoot and to sell dance tickets at the door. Members will be notified.

For new business change of time was discussed due to Daylight Saving Time will end before our next regular meeting.

Motioq made, seconded and carried that our November 12 meeting will start at 7 p.m. youth club, followed by adult's meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Then the Food Committee reported that the lodge will furnish baked turkey and dressing and members to bring a covered dish to help complete the menu.

The president reminded members that our November meeting will also be election of officer& Furthermore, everyone should note that that meeting and supper will be at Round Top Rifle Association Hall; the time is mentioned in my letter.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Afterwards members and guests enjoyed lunch and refreshments.

Lodge No. 88 SPJST To Observe Annual Czech Day Sunday, October 25th, SPJST Lodge No. 88, located at 1435 Beall Street, Houston, Texas, will again, observe their annual Czech Day celebration.

Mayor McConn has declared that October 25th will be Czech Day in Houston. KFRD radio from Rosenberg, Texas will broadcast live from the stage of the Chandelier Ballroom and this broadcast will feature the Choral Group, under the direction of Tim Kostorn, and the Lodge Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Rudy Dybala. Both of these organizations have appeared in many events in South Texas and do much to bring a bit of their Czech heritage to the audiences wherever they appear dressed in their colorful Czech costumes. They will be featured from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m., so come to the Chandelier Ballroom and see them, as well as hear them on the radio.

A turkey dinner, with all the trimmings, will be served during the day starting at 11:30 a.m.

The Sokol gymnasts will perform following the broadcast, and the Champion I3eseda dancers of the Lodge No. 88 Youth Club will dance during an intermission.

President Mildred floleman will present fifty-year membership pins to eleven members attaining fifty years in the SPJST. Chuck Schwartzkopf, Public Information Director of Wharton County Junior College, will speak on the topic "Tex-Czech and Proud of It." Mr. Schwartzkopf was born in Minnesota and moved to the Houston area when he attended school and college. He is an active SPJST member of Hillje Lodge No. 40.

Harlan Maresh, principal of Hamilton Middle School in the HISD school district, will review "Czech Pioneers of the Southwest," which Harlan's father, Dr. Henry Maresh co-authored with Estelle Hudson.

After this short, but entertaining program, the parade of costumes

will begin the dance. Vrazel's Polka Band will play polkas, waltzes, and mixed music for the FREE dance from 5 until 9 p.m.

A full-day, with plenty of activities, has been planned. Come join us...

Dear Members: Our monthly lodge meeting was held Sunday, October 11.

President B. J. Hlavaty called the meeting to order and Mary Ann Roznovsky led the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present for roll call.

The minutes from the August meeting were read by Secretary Patricia Sill and were accepted as read.

Correspondence included a letter from the Supreme Lodge explaining the sales tax exemption allowed lodges on items purchased for lodge use.

Inez Greenlees gave the treasury report. Our account was almost depleted after the ice-maker and beer box were purchased. We had been renting these items with an option to purchase and the'time had come to make a decision; we hope it was the right one. We are confident our financial status will look better next month.

Financial-Secretary Daniel Roznovsky reported one new member, Marshall Kuyawa, and additional insurance for Betty Illavaty. We welcome Marshall and we are proud to have him as a member and as a worker during our game night.

Robert Sill was discharged from the hospital last week after having spent several days in traction due to a back injury. We wish him continued improvement and we were glad he was able to attend the meeting.

Please note those of you who have a schedule of the lodge dances: There will be no dance November 14.

The dance chairman made a mistake for that date. The Rejcek Band is scheduled to play for a wedding in Ennis; but there will be a dance Saturday, November 7. B. J. and yours truly, Betty Hlavaty, will host a dance on that day in observance of our 30th wedding anniversary and all of you are invited to attend.

Please come and help us celebrate.

Henry Rejcek and his Polka Band will be providing the music from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

The Halloween Dance October 10 was a big success and a lot of fun.

The lodge was cleverly decorated by Karen and Nancy Hlavaty and Diane and Stephanie Schneider and Betty Hlavaty. Diane and I donated caramel apples and cupcakes and the money obtained from the sale of these items was used to defray the cost of the four prizes given for the best costumes.

Winners of the costumes' contest were: Paul Guling as the "Mad Doctor," Nancy Hlavaty as the "Witch," Dori Armstrong as the "Ballet Dancer," and Jo Jo Caldwell as the "Hobo." Thanks to all who

participated. It really was a funnight. " The next monthly lodge meeting will be Sunday, November 8 at 6:30 p.m.

Fraternally, Betty Hlavaty Reporter -SPJSTLodge No. 88 News The Saturday night dance with the John Sullivan orchestra at our lodge, for the first time, was enjoyed by a fair attendance. Quite a few guests requested to engage this fine orchestra, again, in the future; this pleased our Entertainment Chairman Homer Alexander. The dance was hosted by Gus Urbanovsky in charge and attending the box office; his wife, Ann, dressed in luscious apricot chiffon gown with Dorothy Hensley dressed in a lovely raspberry chiffon and Juanita Simons in aqua chiffon. The three ladies looked elegant greeting the guests at the door. Their spouses, Lealand Hensley with Orville Simons were quite busy seating the guests at their favorite tables. This was a dress code dance and it was gratifying to see everyone dressed accordingly. Thanks to everyone.

Harry and Mickey Rice spent a pleasant weekend in Montgomery, Alabama. They winged from Houston Friday and were met at the airport by son-in-law Lt. Col. Allen Dodson and his wife, Joan, also their nephew, Jim Bucek, of Nashville, Tennessee. Saturday they attended the benefit show in Montgomery given by Barbara Mandrell, the famous and lovely TV star, Louise Mandrell, her sister, and Louise's husband, R. C. Bannon. After the benefit show Jim Bucek gave a special, party for Harry, Mickey, Joan and Allen to meet all the performers of the benefit show. It was a thrill of their lives (as Mickey said) to meet the famous Mandrell family.

Barbara and her husband, Ken Dudney, their two children, Janie and Mat; sister, Louise and her husband, R. C. Bannon; and their father, Erby Mandrel They stayed up until 4 a.m. partying because no one was sleepy. Sunday evening they boarded a plane with the Mandrell party and Barbara's band as far as Atlanta, when they parted company. Nephew Jim Bucek and his wife, Kathy, are very close friends of the Mandrell sisters and their spouses. (I am also their fan.)

They also attended the cocktail party given before the benefit show honoring Barbara and Louise. The Rices' were really flying high last week.

The parents of Sister Evelyn Vornsand, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kocich, of Moravia are blessed with 65 years of wedded bliss and will celebrate their 65th wedding anni versary October 31, 1981 in the circle of their family and close friends. Mrs. Kocich is the sister of Mrs. Otellie Bucek; wishing them a "Happy Anniversary" and many happy years to come. Brother Louis Kocich is a member of Lodge Velehrad No. 19.

Mickey Rice's mother, Mrs. Otellie Bucek, while at home, accidently tripped and broke her hip. Mrs. Bucek was operated on Thursday, October 8th in the Citizen Memorial Hospital in Victoria.

The lovely couple Alvin and Janet Raymond celebrated their third wedding anniversary October 7 with a nice dinner at the Barbeque Inn and reminiscing about their ten lovely grandchildren. Congratulations. Both are true 88 members.

Brother J. M. Skrabanek, age 92, recently returned from a two-week tour of Europe: visited Czechoslovakia, Germany, Switzerland and France. Brother Joe, as we all call him, attended the District V meeting October 11 at Lodge No. 88; at his age he just looks terrific.

While I am on birthdays, I will brag on mine. Five of my close friends, Rosalee Kostom, Pearl Hanka, Palmae Hilsher, Doris Knapik and Ellen Miculka, on my birthday, Thursday, October 8, came in Rosalee's Cadillac to pick me up and drove to the Mariott Hotel where we enjoyed cocktails and a delicious lunch in leisure. To top it off, at Doris' lovely home, we were treated to a special dessert and coffee and, to my surprise, unexpected gifts were showered on me. Seems to me, the older I get and all that attention, but, at 82, there is not a chance for too many more. I wish to thank these dear friends for a lovely day, long to be'remembered.

A happy event occured in the household of Ronald and Cindy Havemann July 30, 1981 when Nicholas Wayne made his entrance into this world weighing 9 lbs., 7 ozs. The two sets of grandparents, Warren and Gladys Havemann and Pete and Evelyn Dutka, are proud of the new addition to the family. Congratulations!

Here is also a pair of happy greatgrandparents with their first greatgrandchild: Henry and Adelle Kite welcomed their new addition Antrunn Marie Smith, October 3, 1981 born to their daughter, Debi and son-in-law Ken Smith, weighing 7 lbs. and 7 ozs. Congratulations!

Royal and Laura Warnasch, with their daughter Beverly and son-inlaw Ronnie McGoughey and son, Peanut (nickname) Warnasch, all enjoyed four delirious days in the magic city of Las Vegas. They departed Friday and came home just in time to attend the monthly lodge meeting. Peanut's wife had doctor's orders not to go and stay at home (she is expecting a baby in the near future) I haven't found out how the chips fell, but, one sure thing, they all had a good time.

The monthly lodge meeting Monday, October 12 was very nicely attended and all the present members enjoyed the barbecue buffet served at 6:30 p.m. with the covered dishes furnished by the members. Benediction was offered

by President Mildred Holeman. We had our two faithful visitors with us.

Sister Albina Hilsher and Victor Gerlich. Only one member was reported in the hospital: Marie Stayton again had to be admitted to St. Joseph Hospital for further tests.

A whole line of birthdays was read and a birthday song rang out from the assembly with our songbird Helen Iiegwood leading.

Couples having wedding anniversaries were: Frank and Betty Bravenec, 35 years; Mike and Kathy Trefell, 11 years; John and Mary

Kosut, 35 years; Alvin and Janet Raymond, 3 years thesq four couples donated the refreshments after the meeting. Bill and Evelyn Vornsand were married 37 years.

Last week I reported Mary Kosut in the hospital, but, to my surprise, she is home and attended the meeting; I was glad to see you.

To all these anniversary celebrants; many, many, more!

Tuesday, October 6, 1981 we paid our last respects to our Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Brother Reuben B. Lesikar who passed away suddenly Saturday, October 5, 1981.

It was very sad to bid farewell to our well-known and respected member of our SPJST, at the age of 66. The day of sadness was overcast with black clouds and heavy rain fell from the dark skies almost all the way from Houston. The service was held in Temple and interment was scheduled at 4:30 in Taylor, Texas.

Going home, again, heavy rains came down all the way home. We express our deepest of sympathy to the surviving family and, especially, to his bereaved wife, Jeanette, who always was at her husband's side.

We wish to thank Brother Louis Hanes, District V director, in offering to take Tim Kostom and Rosalee and myself to be able to pay our last respects to a true fratern alist.

Goods news from the Thursday Social Night Committee! Again, as for the past 16 years, the committee will have drawing for turkeys. First drawing will be Thursday, November 19th for your Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Worth Lodge No. 92 Fort

Dear Members and Friends: It looks as though Texas is finally getting its share of rain. The Fort Worth area had many streets under water, and the lakes will finally be full again. We hope our members and friends were not affected by the high water.

We had a very nice meeting with all regular business being taken care of by our President Albert Kubala.

We express our sympathy to the family of Brother Johnny Kratky who passed away September 28, and to the Bill McLendon family whose grandmother, Ruth House passed away October 3, also to the family of Brother Reuben Lesikar, our Supreme Lodge Attorney, who passed away recently.

On the sick list we have Sister Lillie Matusevich who is in the St. Joseph Hospital and Brother Robert Ruzicka who is also at St. Joseph Hospital. Sister Peggy Hubenak was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident in Montgomery County and is in the Intensive Care Unit at Hermann Hospital in Houston. She is the daughter-in-law of Richard and Mary Hubenak and the widow of Richard Hubenak Jr., who passed away in April.

Elgin Lodge Plans Annual Fall Festival Our annual Fall Festival and Chili Supper will be held again Saturday night, October 31st.

We will have a large variety of "fun" booths with a "Country Store" full of homemade goodies. Our special named "Master Chefs" will serve their homemade chili and all of this will start at 5:00 p.m.

At 9:00 p.m. music by the Debonnaires will be played.

We are all looking for a good fun night and do mark your calendar to attend.

Our dance for October 31 with music by Lee Roy Matocha from Fayetteville, Texas, is only picked for you all for entertainment; and more bands were picked for the forthcoming year 1982. We are looking toward seeing you brothers, sisters, relatives and friends from wherever you are from whenever you are traveling to Houston, also be sure to have a map of our City of Pasadena.

Pasadena Lodge No. 172 never forgets nice and kind brothers, sisters and friends to show them the best time.

Those who missed the District V meeting and social and oh, that good dinner served Sunday, October 11 at host Lodge No. 88 and their brothers and sisters and Brother John Hilsher showing also their brotherly hospitality, should have been there. Thanks to him and many others, also to all Lodge Pokrok No. 88 leaders for being so nice and adorable to all of us. Thanks, again!

All our members from Lodge No. 172 enjoyed every minute of our presence at the District V meeting by a lodge that shows kindness to all sister lodges.

District V and other district meetings are very special ones, so next time, please don't miss one for there is so much to hear and listen to and the activities that are before the music.

The Lodge No. 88 Czech Concert Orchestra was a pleasure to hear and listen to and sing along if you understood its language; it's so beautiful of our heritage and the beautifully-dressed Choral Group Singers, also under his directing Brother Tim Kostom was enjoyed by all of us; namely, John T. Mikeska, Victor Peter, Vlasta Machann, Lillia Mae Peter and Esther Mikeska, plus Sister Emilie Tofte and her daddy from Needville who sang also behind us. We all enjoyed it very much and all of us wished there would be more social and meetings like this type more often. Thanks Lodge No. 88 members for being so kind to us.

I'm so sorry for having to write so much but please do forgive me for I love to write. From other lodges there were a great many leaders present and thanks to them for being present at the District V meeting. I have read about their upcoming Czech Day October 25 at Lodge No. 88 so be sure not to miss it and if you have a Czech costume, be sure to dress up in it and show pride in your heritage of our lodges as Czechs and sing along, too. Those of other nationalities who don't speak the Czech language, we welcome you to join us and help us preserve the language of our forefathers and mothers who came from their native country of Czechoslovakia and others not to be ever forgotten.

Don't forget your meeting nights; they are very important to all of us, if you don't attend, you will miss a lot of news for what's coming up next, and for ending my newsletter, let's don't forget a Pledge to our United States Flag of our God Bless Country and prayers for all our dearly beloved ones in their everlasting heavenly rest and peace to all.

Dear Members and Friends: The October meeting was called to order at 8:00 p.m. October 8, by President Van Fowler. He asked Sergeant-at-Arms Garry Mizell to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Brother Fowler asked for a moment of silence for Brother Reuben B. Lesikar, Legal Advisor for the Supreme Lodge. Lodge No. 25 members wish to express their deepest sympathy to Bibther Lesikar's Family.

Sister Margaret Krajca, reporting

secretary, read the minutes of last month's meeting and these were approved as read. Then Brother Louis Kudrna made a very favorable report on the finances of our lodge.

A letter from the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind was read asking for a donation.

President Fowler read a letter from Arnold Vrla, who was sending money in memory of his mother, Mary Vrla.

This money was to be used by the lodge as needed. Sister Dorothy Kudrna (Mrs. Louis) made a motion to buy a plaque and list names of members who have memorials made for them. This was approved.

On the sick list was Stanley Mikel.

New members for this month are Donald Washburn and Charles Macalik. Adding on insurance are Janet Martinek, Frances McBride and Gene McBride. A big lodge welcome to all these members!

Brother Louis Kudrna gave a report on the cost of the tennis court.

This report was only on the concrete court. The next report will be on the complete court.

After the checks were distributed, the meeting was adjourned.

To correct a mistake I made in my last letter and to give credit where credit is due — Brother Louis Kudrna made the motion to buy the formica tables for the kitchen, instead of Brother Joe Trojacek as I reported.

My apologies, Brother Louis!

On the Entertainment Calendar, the next dance will be on October 24, music by Boot Hill Band; on November 14, Bryant Foster and his Band, and on November 28th, the Country Boys. These are all good bands so mark all these dates on your calendar and don't miss any of this good entertainment.

Reunion Held

Kulhanek

The tenth Kulhanek Reunion was held on Sunday, September 27, 1981, at Frelsburg, Texas. Rev. Werner Buckholt, Pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church celebrated Holy Mass for the deceased members of the family at 10:00 a.m. Registration began at 11:00 a.m. at the Parish Dining Hall where a basket lunch was served at 12:30 p.m.

Approximately 200 relatives enjoyed the day playing cards, taking pictures, talking and making acquaintances. They came from Columbus, Houston, Fayetteville, San Angelo, East Bernard, Rosenberg, New Ulm, Galena Park, Ellinger, Damon, Bellville, La Grange, Frelsburg, Hungerford, Pasadena, Wallis, Schulenburg, Waller, Orchard, and Brenham.

The business meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m. by Mrs. Elaine Pawlak, president. Mr. Jerry Kuihanek led the group in the opening prayer. Reports were given by Mrs. Madeline Vitek, secretary; and Mr. Pete Zapalac, treasurer. Mr. Leonard Kuihanek, historian, gave a report on the progress of the book on the family history and family tree which is to be printed in the near future. Anyone having old photographs or family history regarding the descendants of Celestina and Anton Kuihanek or

their settlement in America is asked to please contact Mr. Kuihanek so this information can be included in his book. Also, information regarding recent births, deaths, marriages, etc. should be turned in to him so his book can be up-to-date. Deadline to have this information turned in is December, 1981. Anyone interested in purchasing a book is asked to contact the vice-president of their family.

Election of officers was held. They are Mrs. Jo Ann Canik, president; Mrs. Ruth Ann Wunderlich, secretary; Mrs. Cora Wostarek, treasurer; Mr. Leonard Kulhanek, historian; and vice-presidents, Mr. Ralph Goerig, Mr. Dennis Kulhanek, Mr. Edwin Kuihanek, Mrs. Rose Marie Peters, Mr. Pete Janish and Mr. Jerry Dvorak.

The oldest relatives attending were Mr. Ludvik Kulhanek, 91 years; and Mrs. Albina Krenek, 89 years. The youngest person attending was Alyssa Renee Canik, 27-day-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Al Gene Canik. The longest married couple was Mr. and Mrs. Joe Janish who were married 58 years. The most recently married couple was Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Luedke who were married on May 2, 1981. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Wilde of San Angelo traveled the fartherest distance to the reunion.

Door prizes were won by Mr. Justin Wostarek and Miss Debra Stratman.

The meeting adjourned with a prayer by Mr. Jerry Kulhanek. The next Kulhanek reunion will be held on the last Sunday of September, 1983, at Frelsburg.

Martin-Sabrsula The 13th annual Martin-Sabrsula reunion will be held Sunday, October 25, 1981 at the Boling Community Center in Boling, Texas beginning at 10 a.m. Each family is asked to bring a picnic-style lunch enough for their family, also bring a serving utensil for each dish. Bread, tea, and coffee, plates, cups, napkins, forks and spoons will be furnished. If you want to play games, cards and/or dominoes, bring them along.

If you (or any member of your family) have special talent and would like to share this with all of the kinfolks, please be prepared to put on a show. Don't forget to bring whatever interesting information you have compiled on the background of the Sabrsula family.

We are all waiting to see what everyone has come up with. This year we plan to have an exceptionally good time. There will be some prizes given to the lucky winners and games for the school-aged children. Maybe we will also have some games for the adults who are still young at heart. Come prepared to have a great time; we can't wait to see all of you again.

Sunday, October 11, the youth club, their parents and some of the lodge members toured "Six Flags Over Texas." Everyone had a big time and enjoyed it very much.

October 18 was State Fair in Dallas and some of our club members danced in the Beseda performance Musical interludes and fanfares for and some participated in the Sokol the afternoon were provided by the exhibition. very competent Pamela Bland of October 25 is the District III Temple. meeting in Fort Worth at Lodge No. 92. We will have a group going there.

The youth club will have a Halloween Party, spookhouse and games; for supper we will have witch stew, so everyone bring a can of stew or a can of vegetables because we will put these ingredients all-together and have witch stew, also bring some sweets. Don't forget to wear your Halloween costume because we REPORT ON COTTONWOOD will have a contest.

LODGE NO. 6 YC Be thinking about a Christmas Dear Members and Readers Our Youth Club held their Program, we need to start meeting Sunday, October 4 with a practicing soon.

Next on the agenda was the election of officers. Since Eddie Banik was 18 years old, they voted for Darrin 13anik as our new treasurer.

Dawn Pavelka as our South photographer. The officers stand as President Dolores Dobecka, 1st Vice President Theresa Dobecka, 2nd Vice President Larry Brent, Secretary and Reporter Karen Ilykel, Treasurer Darrin I3anik, Historian Janice Stanislav, Guide Darrell Uptmor; and Photographers Larry Manak, north and Dawn Pavelka, south.

DYC Karnas reported that we owe money to camp fund. Mr. Karnas reported that the camp papers has to be notorized. District III YAD is held June 14, 1981 at Lodge No. 66 in Waco. Camp this year is on July 2528 of 1981. ,Eddie Banik suggested that we should project. So we voted that Mrs. Petr for our charity leader. She will ask the amount in the fall meeting. In the fall meeting everyone is reminded to have a poster; the theme is "Summer Activities." I would like to wish everyone good luck at District YAD. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned until 1981 fall meeting to be held at Lodge No. 92 in Fort Worth.

NO.50 YC Dear Readers: El Campo Lodge No. 50 Youth Club met October 5 at the American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary at 8 p.m.

President Lori Henderson opened the meeting. We recited the Pledge to the Flag.

Secretary Tammy Dybala read the minutes and Treasurer Melissa Brandt gave the treasury report and collected dues.

For craft the youth members either drew, designed or wrote on construction paper to use as a cover for a cookbook; each youth also brought a recipe to use in the book.

We practiced for our District VI meeting to be held October 11, 1981.

Mothers present were Mrs. Anna Bartos, Mrs. Josephine Brandt, Mrs. Patricia Dybala, Mrs. Georgie Henderson, Mrs. Janet Holub, Mrs. Janet Marek, Mrs. Bernice Rek, Mrs. Rita Vanek and Mrs. Vlasta Bartos.

Treasurer David Caldwell gave his report and dues were taken.

Lori Dale, Amber Ackerman, and Megan Temill were welcomed as visitors.

We made plans to leave the lodge hall at 2 p.m. to attend the District II Skating Party which was held Sunday, October 18. Before skating, the Youth Club enjoyed totring the museum at the Supreme Lodge.

YC Dear Readers, The youth club held its meeting Sunday, October 4.

Our club went to Six Flags on Sunday, October 11. It was enjoyed by all.

In new business, we talked about getting a youth club popcorn popper. Leanne Parma made a motion to make Christmas ornaments for the Rest Home. A suggestion for the Christmas Party was to give sacks of fruit and candy to the members of the mother lodge.

Karen Mikulec, Debbie, and Gail Docekal will be the committee for this project.

FEATURES Bro. Sefcik and Readers: I am enclosing an article from today's Oct. 7th edition of the Temple Daily Telegram regarding the demise of the Czech-language newspaper, NaSinec, printed in Granger. :I am sending a shorter article for the Czech Section.

The NaAinec was, to my knowledge, the last all-Czech language newspaper printed in Texas. Now it will be no more unless a buyer(s) can be found. Inflation, the general economic situation, loss of subscribers, and the loss of two printing contracts led to the closing of the Nasinec print shop. It is sad...a pity...

We all wish Mrs. Maresh and her co-workers well and our appreciation for their years of toil in the "vineyard of the printer".

Presses Stop Rolling Czech Language Loses Paper

By PAT DAVIDSON GRANGER--Otilie Naizer Maresh's newspaper chronicled the most ordinary aspects of life: birth announcements, death notices, meeting announcements.

But when the presses for the Czech language newspaper, NaMnec, ceased rolling, the paper's Czech subscribers lost a link to their heritage.

As Mrs. Maresh, 62, sees it, the decision to stop publishing the newspaper will hurt efforts to preserve the Czech language in the United States.

"People would call us and ask us how to spell (Czech) words — where to put the (accent) marks (diacritics)," said Mrs. Maresh, Na2Sinec editor. "Some would ask us where to buy sausage. And others would plan a visit to our paper as a main stop of their vacations.

"Now they'll all be deprived."

The newspaper, established 67 years ago in Hallettsville, published its final edition on Sept. 30. Loss of two publishing contracts and rising postage rates were factors in the decision to close, Mrs. Maresh said.

Nasinec Publishing Corp. was formed in Granger in 1937 to salvage a struggling Czech paper from a Taylor publisher, she said.

"The corporation wanted to preserve the Czech language," she said.

Mrs.

Maresh, who considered Nasinec the only general subscription Czech newspaper in the state, said the publication included letters from Czechs from across the nation and Canada who wrote to share their joys and sorrows.

"Subscribers looked forward to it," Mrs. Maresh said. "Many of them were in rest homes and had no elatives. Some came from the old

Some argument took place and someone ran to the neighbors to see that the house numbers had not been switched. The groom's party presented some type of paper documents (sometimes playing cards) and then the gate was finally opened. The groom made it as far as the door of the house where the playing and joking, led by one of the village spokesmen, was repeated. She threw these at him and the children promptly gathered them up. As the groom steadfastly refused to settle for another, the bridesmaid, at last, led in his true bride. All this was played out in a mood of great merriment.

Before departure to the church, blessings were given and the bridal couple thanked their parents for bringing them into the world and raising them. The bride and groom then parted with their unmarried brothers and sisters. The parents then departed together for the church. After the wedding Mass the parents blessed the newlyweds and received thanks from the couple for their upbringing. The wedding party then proceeded to the bride's house for the festivities. Along the way beggars stopped the party asking for alms.

After the main meal a collection was taken up for the cooks and for the bride, so that she might buy a cradle. One of the cooks sometime cried out that she had scalded her hand and that she needed money for the doctor. A collection was taken up among the men from both families for the musicians. The bridesmaid tried to steal the bride's shoe, which the bride had to buy back. This shoe was passed around and each person attending the wedding placed money in it as a gift for the bride.

"Cepeni" of the bride was a custom among the people of the Illuein area before 1900, but the custom lost popularity and has completely vanished today. Cepeni was a type of initiation rite in which the bride was accepted among the ranks of married women.

Cepeni is derived from the word for bonnet, "eepec." 6epeni took place at eleven o'clock, in order that the newlyweds might be home by midnight. In the center of the hall one of the older women removed the bride's garland of flowers and replaced it with a bonnet. She tied it for the bride, who was now accepted as a married woman. After this rite, the bride danced once more and then the newlyweds departed. The other guests continued their revelry, which often lasted until two o'clock in the morning. It was said of a bride that acted very gay that she would not be happy. It was also expected of a bride that she not leave her corner during the wedding festivities.

When the bride's house was not large enough to accommodate the wedding party sometimes-the festivities were held in the barn. After the wedding the bride's trousseau was delivered by wagon, accompanied

either by a local farmer or a hired man, depending on the bride's wealth. The trousseau consisted of kitchen furniture and utensils, linen, two feather pillows, towels, napkins, the bride's wardrobe, washtubs, and washing utensils. Also included were bread, potatoes, all varieties of spices, salt, in fact everything needed to prepare food, so that the bride must not beg or buy anything. If the bride were from a farm she received a cow, pig, and tools such as a pitchfork, shovel, and rake. If the newlyweds were to live with the bride's family, the groom gave his mother-inlaw some type of scarf. The bride also gave her mother- and sister-in-laws scarves. This was done as a gesture of welcome.

Translator's note: One of the special characteristics of the Czech people in Texas is the so-called Bohemian wedding. As we see from this article, published in the journal VLASTIVEDNE LISTY, many of the customs of the Czech wedding in Texas have their roots in the customs of the old country.

Hluein is a town in north-central Czechoslovakia, on the border of the regions of Moravia and Silesia. Many of the Czech immigrants in Texas came from the region around Hluein.

Certain of the customsr described in this article can be seen in weddings in Texas. For example, in Granger, Texas, where many people are descendants of immigrants from the region around Hluein, it is still the custom at wedding receptions to take up a collection for the bride in her shoe.

In recent years there has been an upswing in interest in our CzechMoravian heritage. Weddings and other aspects of community life are an important part of this heritage and we should try to preserve these customs passed on to us by our ancestors. The Czech people of Texas possess a unique heritage and we owe it to future generations to preserve all of it that we can.
