DISTRICT V FALL MEETING Our fall meeting will be held at Lodge No. 88 Sunday, October 11.

The officers of District V request that all of you good members try to come and bring another member.

The host lodge will serve a delicious dinner of roast beef with all the trimmings beginning at 11:30 a.m. All kinds of home-made pastries will be avaba cnie.

The Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra and Choral Club will entertain us before the meeting. The youth of the district will present a special program.

There will be prizes given to the three lodges (excluding Lodge 88) that have the most members attending. There will also be a drawing for door prizes — at least five cash prizes of $5.00 each.

A Free dance from 5 to 9 p.m. will follow the meeting. The Edna Polka Boys will be playing all your requests.

Please mark your calendar for October 11 and come enjoy the day, while taking part in the business of your district. With good food, great entertainment, and chances to win prizes, how can you miss? See you there.

MISS WESTFEST "81" During "Miss Westfest" competition, Betty Jean Pavlas was named the 1981 "Miss Westfest" Friday, September 4.

She was selected from a field of eleven contestants, the largest in the pageant's three-year history.

Her hobbies include volleyball, softball, attending polka dances, and listening to polka music.

She is a member of the Centex Reseda dancers of Abbott, Texas.

In March, 1981 Miss Pavlas won "Miss Personality" in the Cinderella Pageant held in West.

Miss Pavlas is a West High School senior and was sponsored by West Affiliated Food Store.

Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Alvin F. Pavlas of Route One, West.

Betty Jean is a lifelong member of Cottonwood Lodge No. 6.

Mrs. Kruse is trained to help you or your family with your insurance needs. She is a member of the Women's Leaders Roundtable of the National Association of Life Underwriters, the Texas Leaders Roundtable and a graduate of Life Underwriters Training Council (LUTC). the SPJST for 57 years before passing away January 1, 1975 as the result of a car accident. IVIy first meeting with Sister Jenny was when she agreed to be a craft judge at the first District VII YAD our youth club hosted fifteen years ago.

Her warm and pleasant demeanor and fine intellect made a lasting impression on me, and I shall always treasure her friendship.

The Memorial Room is used by various organizations such as the Sons of Hermann, Tuesday Study Club, the Lions and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Host for the local lodge meeting was the well-known and beloved Brother John Hranicky, who has been a member for 70 years. His son, Roy, and his wife, Ruby, designed and finished the lovely room, beautiful paneling, lovely rug, nice furniture, and all. Many people helped with donations. We were grateful to be able to meet there and saw many of our members from the Orange Grove area who cannot attend our meetings regularly because of the distance.

During the meeting, a talk was giv9,n by Sister Frances Faye McDonald who was chosen by the City of Corpus Christi as a Sister City Exchange Student to Tampico, Mexico, this past summer. She related the many exciting experiences she had during the week-long trip.

The meeting was well-conducted by the president, Brother Kenneth Foerster. The first reading of the new Rules and Regulations for Lodge No. 117 was heard and discussed. Salaries for officers for 1982 were also reviewed.

It was an enjoyable meeting and afternoon, and, if any of you are traveling from Mathis to Alice on a weekend, I encourage you to make a stop at the Orange Crate. It would be a great place to do some unusual Christmas gift buying.

The next meeting will be held in December in the Edwin Jurica home, and members are invited to come and enjoy the special fellowship anjoyed by members of Lodge No. 117 and all the other lodges in our fine state.

LODGE NO. 54

DISTRICT VII DIRECTOR'S REPORT Dear Readers: Have you ever had the opportunity to attend a meeting which was held in an orange crate?

Such was the case when Lodge No. 117, Robstown, held their quarterly meeting Sunday, September 13 at the Orange Crate in Orange Grove, a town 25 miles northwest of R,obstown. The Orange Crate, is a meeting place for senior citizens and service clubs of the area There is a small shop where ladies show and sell handcrafts and food items they make. The shop is open on weekends, and I am told their patronage is quite large.

Just behind the shop is a beautiful meeting room, with a kitchen, work room and rest rooms, called the Jenny Hranicky Memorial Room.

During our quarterly meeting, held September 13, several items of interest were reported, explained and discussed.

President Zahirniak called on each officer including youth leader to give their reports which were accepted by the attending members.

Our lodge is functioning very nicely, which speaks well of the active members who maintain interest in local lodge affairs.

The members appreciate our sales representatives who secure good and sound members for our lodge. A list of names were given at the recent meeting for those who applied for new membership; namely, Shawn A. Massier, Tannier Holacek and Christopher M. Williams.

Transferees from Houston Lodge No. 88 into Lodge No. 54 in West included Rev. Lawrence T. Junek, Barbara B. Junek, Jane Elizabeth Junek, Elaine Ann (Case) Junek and Timothy John Junek.

These new members and those who transferred into our lodge were

unanimously accepted; we thank them for selecting our lodge.

The Auditing Committee also made a good report, and their next audit shall take place some time before our annual meeting.

Sister Beanie Kacir presented her report on the Special Committee pertaining to charity contributions and voluntary work, etc. She will give another report at the fourth quarterly and annual meeting in December. We wish to remind our members to contact Sister Beanie and let her know of your charity work and/or contributions; this will enable her to keep record of its members' deeds which are transmitted to the Home Office and then to National Fraternal Congress (NFC).

It was announced that Brother and Sister Frank Volcik of West were parade marshals in the recent Westfest parade. They were selected as the oldest married couple (66 years) living in the West Independent School District; both of them are members of Lodge No. 54.

Congratulations to them!

On behalf of Sokol West, Brother Sefcik thanked the lodge for enabling the unit to hold their meetings at Lodge No. 54 and announced that West will host the Southern District Sokol Slet in June at West.

Our hearts were saddened about the death of our member, Brother Timothy (Tim) Haberl, who died August 21 from an automobile accident, at the age of 18. The lodge extends its deepest sympathy to the surviving family. May he rest in peace. A silent tribute was observed in his memory at the meeting.

Adjournment was called at 3:55 p.m.; and each member is reminded that our annual meeting in December calls for election of officers, reports to be given, plus a social for its members at 1 p.m.

On entertainment, some of the dances have been changed to wedding dances (these weddings were scheduled for the KJT and now to be held at Lodge No. 25); it is the largest building available.

According to the latest information I have, the next dance on the calendar will be October 17, with the popular Lonnie Dean and his Band and then October 24, The Boot Hill Band. Both bands will give you many hours of entertainment, so keep these dates in mind.

Fraternally, Viola Dlabaj Reporter -SPJSTLODGE NO. 183, MID-CITIES NEWSLETTER Dear Members: This past weekend burglars paid our lodge a visit and made off with several cases of beer, cold drinks, two PA systems, microphones, shop vac, tools, bar stool, beer trays, bar mirrors advertising "Coors" and "Old Milwaukee" and several miscellaneous items plus a large box of sausage, and I'm sure we'll be finding other things missing as time goes on.

It was not a forced entry. It appears the kitchen door, the one that is never used was left unlocked or either someone had a key to the lodge. Arlington Police are investigating.

Saturday, we had a dance at the lodge and the bar area did look sad since the lighted "Coors" mirror was missing. The attendance was better than the previous dance.

Sunday, September 12 our lodge meeting was held with a few more members in attendance. We also had two guests, Tommy Podsednik and his son Jason. Guests are always welcome.

President B. J. Hlavaty called the meeting to order. Nancy Hlavaty led the Pledge of Allegiance. President Hlavaty asked members to face our lodge banner because' . our U.S. Flag was among the items stolen from the lodge.

The minutes were recorded by Financial-Secretary Daniel Roznovsky and were, approved as read.

Daniel reported one new member, Nan Holmes and additional insurance for Nancy Hlavaty and Karen Hlavaty.

On behalf of all the membership, I extend a warm welcome to Nan and invite her to participate in the functions held at:the lodge.

Our beer box and ice-maker were obtained on a 12-month option-tobuy plan and it now has come time to make that decision. The membership voted to finalize this transaction by

the end of September.

Karen Hlavaty suggested our next dance in October be a masquerade dance in observance of Halloween. This suggestion was met with unanimous approval. Karen and Nancy Hlavaty and Diane Schneider will take care of the lodge decorations.

Plan to attend our "free" dance October 10, at 9 p.m. Come in costume and dance to the music of Henry Rejcek and his Polka Band from Ennis. You might even win a prize for the best costume.

We want to extend "get-well" wishes to Brian Greenlees, son of Inez Greenlees. Brian had foot surgery Friday and we wish for him a speedy recovery.

The next lodge meeting will be Sunday, October 11, at 6:30 p.m.

The flag was presented by IVIelaine Zavodny and Alan Haisler who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We then remained standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members, Sister Millie Kohut and Brother Frank Lesikar.

Secretary Nelda Marek read thank you notes from Brother Frank Lesikar and. Brother Frank J. Schiller families in remembering them in their time of loss.

Sister Louise Zavodny, being in charge of the sponsored dance that was held September 4, gave us a report. She said it was enjoyed by many people and it proved to be successful. We want to thank all the sponsors who bought tables and also thank Sister Louise for her work.

The committee for the Rules and Regulations was appointed; namely, Chairman Brother David Vanicek, Brother Marvin Wilde and Brother Ben Tyroch.

Terry Taylor, president of the Board of Trustees, presented a tentative price on the addition we are planning to build. There was a lot of discussion if the youth room will be big enough; there is a lot of concern for our youth members. It was then brought to a vote and it was passed on to leave the size of the board information presented.

We should all work together now and get it built; the main thing is we are getting a new kitchen and a youth room we badly needed and we can always enlarge as we see the need.

These new members were presented to the membership to be accepted: Jerry Macek, signed up by Sales Representative Milton Zavodny; Amber Barnes, signed up

by Sales Representative Doris Svoboda; and Richard Rupport, signed up by a sales representative from another lodge.

Fraternally, Bernice Sebek Reporter -SPJSTLODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY The September 9, 1981 monthly meeting of Lodge No. 177 was called to order by President Jerry Tomastik.

We had a very nice meeting, with all lodge officers and committee chairmen present.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the membership.

We had a special guest and old friend, Brother Frank Klinkovsky, District II youth counselor.

President Tomastik asked for the committee chairmen to give their reports with much progress being made. President Tomastik also told the membership that another payment has been made on the lodge. The payment was due in September; it's great progress when we are able to make our payments before they are due. Thanks to those hard-working people at the lodge for their work and thanks to the officers and the insurance sales representatives, because without these fine people we wouldn't have a lodge.

Richard Pustka gave the Board of Trustees' report; various items were discussed and accepted.

Louis Driska gave a report on the Houston Astro trip. They finally got to go Saturday, September 12 (with the baseball strike confusion), Louis finally got the tickets. I'm sure they had a great time because all of our bus trips have been lots of fun.

In the Youth Club report by. Pat Tomastik, there were 18 youth members and 7 adults present. We had three new members, Donald Tomastik, Eric Tomastik and Shawn Tomastik. If we can get the tickets, the youth club will be going to see the Dallas Cowboys in the latter part of November (more on this at the next meeting). The State Royalty will be held September 26 at Taylor Lodge No. 29, beginning at 4:30 p.m. We would like to have as many members present as possible, so please attend.

Those winning door prizes were: Ronson Pechal, $20; Brady Hutka, $10; Dedra Tomastik, $5.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky spoke to the youth members about their club and what is expected from the youngsters and how to make a better club. We are open for suggestions. Frank also told them that there would be a District II Skating Party October 18; for more information Frank will have a letter in the Vestnik.

Juanita Rarnm made a suggestion that the kitchen employees be paid for their work on Tuesday and Saturday. A special Trustees' meeting was called. The trustees met after the meeting and decided to pay people working in the kitchen.

The meeting adjourned with a happy hour afterwards.

The next meeting will be October 14 at 7:30 p.m., and youth club will meet at 6:45 p.m.

LODGE NO. 81, NEEDVILLE The SPJST Lodge No. 81 held its regular monthly meeting September 8 at 7:30 p.m., with President Charlie Matcek presiding.

Sister Mary Matcek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag; all remained standing in silence as a tribute to our deceased member, Brother John Blinka. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family.

Brother Blinka gave many years of service to our lodge, serving as a secretary and sales representative.

All the officers answered the roll call. We were especially glad to see Brother Matcek back with us and able to conduct our meeting, after several weeks of illness. Welcome back, Charlie!

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting.

These were accepted after a minor correction. She also read a card of thanks from the Beard family.

Financial Secretary Aleene Zwahr gave her report and treasurer's report was given by Willie Mae Kuykendall. Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel gave a detailed financial report and also the schedule of activities at the hall for the oncoming month. These reports were all accepted as given.

Reported on the sick list were Brother Joe Zela who is at the Polly Ryon Hospital and Sister Vlasta Holt. We wish both a speedy recovery.

The following new members were accepted into our lodge: Sharon Kuban, Aaron Blinka, Deborah Sabrsula, Joseph Sabrsula and Charles Kohleffel. We welcome all of you Let's remember the District V meeting which will be held in Houston at Lodge No 88 October 11.

LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Members and Friends: Our last meeting of August 30 was called to order by President Alfred Klusacek.

Flagbearers David Pechal and Nora Skrabanek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Ann Balusek was our only visitor.

We are always happy to see you, Ann, and invite you to come again.

Dolores Skrabanek, secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting and correspondence, which consisted of a thank you note from the Frank Novosad family for the floral offering.

All officers and chairpersons were present and gave satisfactory reports. Alfred L. Klusacek read the minutes from the last Board meeting.

On the sick list were Anne Krcha, Joe Harris, Melanie Koslovsky and Della Andel. We wish all of you a very speedy recovery and hope you will be with us soon.

New members accepted into our membership were Betty Ann Hobbs, Russell King Weir, Clay Allan Weir, Jason Wayne Killion, Steven D. Mikeska, Kelli Marie Klinkovsky and Charles L. Mikulas. We welcome all of you and hope you can come to our meetings and other activities.

She stated that the Youth Club will be selling Christmas items, so all you members help them out Roderick Hutka, youth club president, presented a check for $75 to Alfred L. Klusacek to help defray some of the medical expenses for Ginger who is still ill. The youth club gave up their social for September in order to perform this good deed.

Mrs. Patterson also reported that each youth club member'is to visit a shut-in in September. They will bring a ray of sunshine to a lot of shut-ins as five minutes with one person means so very much to the aged and ill. God bless them for doing this.

Door prizes were won by Dolores Skrabanek and Ann Koon. Audit will be Thursday, October 1 at 7 p.m.

We were proud to have him in our midst. He announced that he made Camp Val Verde with our youth members and all enjoyed his presence and thanked him for the watermelon party. He, once again, reminded us of our motto: "Take Pride, We Do In District V!" President Mary Ann Kieschnick announced the District V fall meeting at Lodge No 88 for Sunday, October 11. Our next lodge meeting will be Sunday, October 4 at 2 p.m.

Our capsule attendance prize drawing for $50 was Ginger Birdwell who was absent We then had a consolation prize drawing for $5, this was taken by Anita Pavlicek.

Door prizes went to: Lillie Melnar, Sidon Turnis, Henrietta Veselka and Alvin Melnar.

Parents of the couple are Brother and Sister Steve J. Mocio and Mr. and Mrs. Alger Barnard of Merriville, Indiana, and the late Rev. John Kenneth Watkins.

Vicki Beran and Tom Watkins were honor attendants. Tracey attended the University of Texas at Arlington and Stephen was a student at TCU. May you have a long and happy life together.

The Youth Club following their meeting went to play miniature golf and then to the Jack-in-the-Box to eat. Carrie Ann Clevland was their door prize winner, and a good time was had by all.

Sister Anna Johnson was the adult recipient.

For those of you who are not familiar with the location of Lodge 29, there are two or three ways to get there, but rather than go into a lot of detail, I will give you the principal directions from downtown Taylor. The main thoroughfare north and south through Taylor is Hwy. 95. One block south of the first red light coming into Taylor from the north (Temple) take Hosack Street for one-half block, then turn right on Porter Street for two blocks, then continue left on Thorndale Road approximately one and one-half miles to Lodge 29. (See accompanying sketch) We are greatly indebted to the officers and members of Lodge 29 for agreeing to host this year's royalty in their very comfortable lodge surroundings. We are looking for a good attendance by the parents and supporters of our youth on this day. Come and enjoy it with us.

Dear Readers, El Campo Lodge No. 50 Youth Club met September 2, 1981, at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary.

The meeting was opened by Vice President Michael Marek. Treasurer Melissa Brandt gave the treasury report and collected dues. Michael Marek gave a report on State YAD. For the next meeting each youth member is to bring a sheet of con struction paper and a recipe for craft which was discussed at this meeting.

Dear Members and Readers: Lodge No 6 Youth Club meeting was held August 30 with a good attendance.

Our club members attended State YAD which was held August 23, in the Temple High School Auditorium. One of our members, Delores Dobecka received a scholar ship award for $600; Darrell Uptrnor is the Junior of the Year Damon Perez won 1st place on his string art; and Shirley Dobecka received 1st place in Foods. We are very proud of all of you!

The youth club had a booth at Westfest, selling kolache, cookbooks, canned goods, etc. All of the youngsters and some members helped with kolache and working the booth. I want to thank each of you very much.

Our club also had a float in the Westfest parade. Thanks to all who helped with the float.

October 11 our youth club will be going to Six Flags, October 18 to State Fair in Dallas, and October 25 to attend District III meeting at Lodge No 92 in Fort Worth. The month of October will be a busy one Birthdays for September are Lillian Perez and Theresa Dobecka.

8/VRSTNIK -- Wednesday, September 23, 1981 YAD -- good rememberances.

Congratulations were extended to Ann Margaret Harper, our State winner in Individual Talent. Others who received second and third place winning at State were Melissa Wickel, Rhonda Eckermann, and Ann Harper in Crafts, and Kimberly Gebhard, Sue Schoenst, Melissa Wickel, Jeannie and Rhonda Eckermann in Group Talent.

Shakespeare at Winedale was discussed. We will be selling our mugs featuring Round Top at the antique fair on October 3rd and 4th.

A work schedule will be figured out later. November 8th will be our home lodge's variety shoot and dance.

Our program for the evening was presented by Paula and Sammy Key. It was a most interesting and en tertaining re-run for their vacation from Texas through New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, the Dakotas and Canada. Lots of scenery, State parks, and historical places were presented in photographs and travel bulletins.

Our next program will be presented by Ann and Susie Harper about their trip to Ireland and how things are different in that part of the world. They will also have lots of pictures that we can all enjoy.

Stew was served for supper.

Taylor YC Held Their Meeting Dear Members and Friends, The September meeting of Lodge No. 29 Youth Club was called to order by President Troy Marx.

Ginger Wuensche led the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll was called and the minutes were read and approved.

Larry Brown was welcomed as a visitor. New members were Misty Johnson, Jonna McCormick and Temple McCormick.

The social planned for the Academy Drag Strip was re scheduled for Sunday, September 20. Members were asked to meet at the lodge hall at 1 p.m.

Youth Leader Melvin Steger exhibited the sports equipment that the youth club received for selling Tom-Watt products. Now, the members will enjoy playing soccer, horseshoes and badminton.

Assistant Youth Leader Donna Pasemann reminded everyone of the State Royalty to be held at our lodge Saturday, September 26.

Lodge No. 30 YC Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Club held their monthly meeting September 6, 1981, at 2:30 p.m. at the Taiton Community Center.

Our meeting was called to order

by Vice President Vicki Dorotik.

Marjorie Treumer said the prayer and Michelle Krpec led the Pledge of Allegiance.

We collected aluminum cans for a money-making project. We also gave to Muscular Dystrophy and we discussed our victories at State YAD. We are having a home products sale to raise money for our club.

For our contest we drew pictures about Fall. Winners were lst Marcy Dorotik, 2nd Stephanie Roye in age group 6-9; 1st Jean Dorotik, 2nd Jana Dornak, 3rd Linda Treumer in 10-12; and 1st Vicki Dorotik, 2nd Karen Kahanek, 3rd Rudy Leitkep.

Tabor YC Discusses Fall Activities

Dear Readers, SPJST Lodge No. 17 Youth Club held their monthly meeting September 13, 1981 at the hall.

Skating Party Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club spent Saturday afternoon at the Silver Wings Ballroom for their District VI Skating Party. It started at 2 p.m. and ended at 5 p.m. Supper, which included hot dogs, chips and a drink, was furnished by the district.

We really had a great time and I would like to thank the SPJST, and Mrs. Marek for making this all possible. Other lodge that attended was Lodge No. 50, El Campo.

Lodge No 130 Plans Sock Hop Dance We are having a sock hop 50's dance Saturday, September 26. We are working on the decorations for the dance. We are also planning to sell popcorn and Nachos at the dance.

We are working on our points for YAD. We have lots of fun at our meetings, summer camp, and the many activities we hold. Boys and girls of Lodge No. 130, come and join us.

Lodge No. 25 Ennis Youth Club Meeting Dear Readers, The September 9 meeting of Lodge No. 25 Youth Club was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President Suzann Macalik.

Old business was the youth club dance which was very successful and I would like to thank all of the adults who helped.

New business is a trip to Six Flags September 26. Everyone is asked to meet at the hall; also under new business, we discussed the Aloe Vera Party, which is to be held October 6.

The new Youth Rule Books were handed out to all members. The meeting was adjourned and everyone worked in the kitchen during social games.

Activities Attended by Lodge No. 117 YC Dear Readers, September 12, fourteen youth club members of Robstown, plus four guests and three adults went to the movies. After the movies everyone went to Burger Chef to eat. We arrived home about 5:30 p.m.

September 13, I attended the adult Lodge No. 117 meeting which was held in Orange Grove at the Orange Crate. There was a very good turnout of adults and hope they will continue to come to the meetings which are held quarterly.

This past Saturday, September 12, Lodge No. 30 and Lodge No. 50 held a skating party at the Silver Wings Ballroom. Both lodges had a good time.

Our next meeting will be held on the first Sunday in October (4), and the contest topic will be about Halloween.

State YAD Winners Dear Readers, Sunday, August 23, 1981, eight youth members and four adults from Warrenton Lodge No. 179 attended State Youth Achievement Day at Temple High School. It was a very enjoyable day.

Ann Margaret Harper placed first in State Individual Talent in 13-14 age group. Our Senior Group Talent with Kimberly Gebhard, Sue Schoenst, Melissa Wickel, Jeannie Eckermann and Rhonda Eckermann placed third.

Other craft winners in State competition included Ann Harper who won second place in Home Arts (sewing) and third place in Pictorial Arts.

Entries by Rhonda Oltmann in Home Arts, Sue Schoenst in Constructed Items, Rhonda Eckermann in Handicrafts, did not place.

Our Scrapbook was also entered.

This concluded our summer activities. Monday, August 24 was school day again.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Texaska Orlice No. 13, Dime Box, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed sister JULIA HANNES SCHKADE,

of Giddings, who passed away at the age of 74, at the Lee Memorial Hospital July 18, 1981.

Sister Schkade was born July 24, 1906 in Lee County, Texas; her parents were the late William and Mollie (Fetter) Matejeek. She was retired from the Schkade Jewelry Store business which she owned and operated until about a year ago.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 20, at the Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Giddings, with burial at the City Cemetery with Rev. Fred Mgebroff officiating.

Sister Schkade is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Hardy of Elgin; three sons, Kenneth Hannes of Houston, Charles Hannes of Coon Rapids, Minnesota and Edward Schkade of Houston; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Hahn of Waco and Mrs. Annie Hannes of Leroy; and one brother, Joe Matejcek of Giddings.

Sister Schkade was an SPJST member for over 53 years. She had transferred from Lodge No. 105, where her family was very active in that SPJST lodge.

May our departed lodge sister rest in peace and her memory live among us.

who passed away June 6, 1981, following a short illness.

Daniel Macha resided at 3119 Moor Drive, Nederland; he was 50 years of age. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 151 for 42 years.

He was a native of Wharton and a Nederland resident for 23 years. He was employed with Texas Gulf Sulphur Plant with 27 years of service and a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Melissa Erline Macha of Nederland; one son, Danny Macha of Nederland; one step-daughter, Joetta Romero of Houston; his mother, Mrs. Louie (Viola) Macha of Wharton; three step-grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Services were held at 2 p.m. June 8, at the Nederland Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Walter Sanders officiating.

Additional services were held at 2 p.m. June 9 at the Holy Family Catholic Church, in Wharton. A Mass was con-celebrated by Rev.

IN MEMORIAM Gary Wayne Hlavaty died Wednesday, May 6, 1981 at the age of 21.

He was born November 21, 1959 in Arlington and resided here all his life. He attended Sam Houston High School.

At the time of his death he was employed by Mid-America Roller Company as a lathe operator.

Gary enjoyed sports, fishing, and going deer hunting with his dad.

He was an active member of Lodge No. 183 and is missed by all of us. He often worked behind the bar, in the kitchen, helped with lodge clean up, dances, decorating or wherever else he was needed.

Gary was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Arlington. Mass for Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, May 8 by Rev. Rudy Renteria.

Rosary was recited at 8 p.m.

Thursday at the Williamsburg Funeral Chapel in Arlington. Interment was in Moore's Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were George Mynar, Eddie Ray Mikuda, Paul Kucera and Ernest Uptomore Jr., all of West, Glenn Hennig, Dallas and Thomas Pustejovsky, Arlington.

Survivors include his parents, Bernard and Betty Hlavaty of Arlington; a brother, Bernard Jr. of Peyton, Colorado; three sisters, Diane Schneider, Nancy and Karen Hlavaty; and niece, Stephanie Schneider, all of Arlington; grandparents, Eddie and Annie Hlavaty of West and Louise and the late Jodie Lucian of Dallas; also several aunts and uncles.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Caldwell Lodge No. 186, wish to express our sincere sympathy on behalf of the entire membership to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother WILLIAM DRGAC, who died Monday morning, August 31, 1981, in Goodnight Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services for William Henry Drgac, 84, of Caldwell were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, in the Cooks Point Brethren Church with the pastor, Rev. Norman Haisler and Rev. Henry E. Beseda, pastor of the Austin Brethren Church officiating.

Interment was in the Cooks Point Brethren Church Cemetery.

He was born March 1, 1897 in Burleson County in the San Antonio Prairie Community, the son of Joseph and Annie Sebesta Drgac.

Mr. Drgac had lived in Burleson County in the Cooks Point Community most of his life. He was an active member of the Cooks Point

Brethren Church, serving as Elder and sang in the church choir. He was a member of the First Confirmation class of the Cooks Point Brethren Church.

He was a member of the Mutual Aid Society and the SPJST Lodge No. 186 of Caldwell. He was a farmer and dairyman and did carpenter work.

He is survived by two brothers, Ed Drgac and Frank Drgac of Cooks Point; six sisters, Mrs. Lydia Kubena of Houston, Mrs. Albina Meyer of Cameron, Mrs. Milady Kubena, Mrs. Libbie Chaloupka, Mrs. Elizabeth Luksa and Mrs. Olga Urbanovsky, all of Caldwell.

Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers, Walter Drgac, Joe Drgac and Johnnie Drgac and one sister, Mrs. Annie Hronek.

Active pallbearers were Hubert J. Drgac, Mel Iironek, Marvin M. Kubena, Leon Kubena, Bill Albright, Al Bauman, Jr., Lamar Drgac and J. L. Kubena.

Honorary pallbearers were W. F. NoWak, Walter Rosenkrantz, Clarence Daniels, Robert Wine, Alvin Albright and William McSwain.

He was a long time resident of Corpus Christi and was retired from the Kubala Pest Control Company.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 79, Sokol Corpus Christi, KJT No. 55 of Corn Hill, Texas, and the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas. He had served as past president of the SPJST Lodge No. 79.

Survivors include his wife, Georgia Ann; two daughters, Miss Pat Kubala, Mrs. Barbara Quinones, both of Corpus Christi; one son, Louis Alphonse Kubala, Victoria; five sisters, Mrs. Vlasta Majek, Corpus Christi, Mrs. Mary Cernoch, Sinton, Mrs. Elizabeth Hroch, Corn Hill, Mrs. Louise Tschoener, Bartlett, Texas, Mrs. Albina Brosch, Granger; a brother, John Kubala, Jarrell; a son-in-law, Gene Jaksik, Pleasanton; four grandchildren, Robert and Sandra Jaksik, Michael and Christina Kubala.

Sunday in the Maxwell P. Dunne Chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Christ the King Catholic Church.

COMPOSER OF "HOME

SWEET HOME" It was June 9, 1791, one hundred and ninety years ago, that John Howard Payne, the American dramatist, diplomat, and author of the famous song, "Home Sweet Home," was born in New York.

While living in London and Paris, he wrote libretto of the operatic drama, "Clari, or the Maid of Milan," to which Sir Henry Bishop, the English composer, contributed the music. "Home Sweet Home" was originally an aria in this now forgotten opera. The song, however, has remained a popular classic on both sides of the Atlantic.

Payne also wrote several successful tragedies, including Brutus and Charles the Second; at the time of his death, in 1852, he was United States consul at Tunis. ***

UNUSUAL QUILT ON DISPLAY AT MUSEUM An unusual quilt is on display at the SPJST Museum. It is a quilt with 550 names embroidered on it and was made approximately 55 years ago by the ladies of the Ocker Brethren Church. The names are of the members of the Ocker Church with a few names from other churches in the Brethren Unity.

Mrs. Hoby S. Payne Janet Ann Wheat of Route 5, Box 758, Burleson became the bride of Hoby Scott Payne of 4055 J. Rendon Road, Bur/eson, Saturday, August 22, 1981, in Crestrnont Baptist Church at Burleson.

The Rev. Brother Jim Scott officiated at the double-ring ceremony.

Decorations in the church aisleway were encircled with an archway framing the white aislecloth flanked by arrangements on the pairs of aisle candelabra leading to the kneeling bench. The communion table was the focal point holding a massive arrangement of pink gerber daisies, snapdragons, gladiolas, roses, fuji chrysanthemums, rubrum lillies, and assorted flowers and foliages. Arch and spiral candelabra alternated with palm trees, and tree-candelabra held arrangements to match those on the railing. Palm trees and ferns banked the setting.

Parents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. Gene Wheat of Burleson, and Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Kocurek of Jewett, Texas are`the grandparents.

The bridegroom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Payne of Burleson.

Martha Proctor, organist, provided music for vocalist Janice Muse, who sang: "God, A Woman and A Man" and "Surround Me With Love."

Given in marriage by her father, the bride chose an original gown with special trims by William Cahill.

The finger-tip veil of white illusion edged with schiffli lace was capped in lace with a bustle of stephanotis.

She carried a bouquet of natural Cascade of dozens of phaelenopsis orchids, bridal white roses and stephanotis intermingled with alstroemaria, ming fern, English ivy, and white satin tubing.

Maid of Honor Alice Kocurek dressed in a pink gown of knit fabric and schiffli lace, carried a Crescent bouquet of pink hued, rubrum

minuette roses, statice, stephanotis, and alstroernaria woven with mixed foliages and pink satin tubing.

Sabrina Ward, the bridesmaid, was attired in the identical complete formal wear as the maid of honor.

Tate Payne served as best man.

Groomsman was Cody Payne.

After the wedding ceremony, a reception followed in the church fellowship hall at Burleson.

The bride is a graduate of Burleson High School and of Buddy Benz School of Floral Design. She is currently employed with the family business, "Flowers by Fran."

A graduate from Mansfield High School, the bridegroom is presently employed in the family business, "Payne Construction Company."

RICHARD URBIS PLAYED PREMIERE OF HIS NEW PIECE IN CONCERT AT THREE RIVERS Richard Urbis, classical pianist, gave a concert Sunday at 3:30 p.m., September 20 at the First United Methodist Church of Three Rivers, Texas. There were works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Lizst, and the Premiere of his own "CzechAmerican Fantasy."

Mr. Urbis is a Juilliard Master's Degree graduate. He performed in the 1980 Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland and in the 1981 Beethoven Competition in Vienna, Austria and received great audience acclaim. Among his many awards are two First Place finishes in Texas piano competitions, and the Dallas Symphony 1973 performance of his own "Suite for Orchestra." The Beethoven and Chopin works on this program were performed in Vienna and Warsaw.

"Sure, sure, I'm full-blooded Czech one-hunnerd percent —but I'm born here," Frank Vytopil says. "I was raised in Smetana, number one Czech community, in Brazos County."

Frank Vytopil is a lean 84-year-old character who likes to laugh. His wife, Albina, crochets at a nonstop pace because she "can't sit still."

Frank and Albina have been married more than 60 years. They maintain a home off Tabor Road that's ... well, slightly old-fashioned.

Their living room, with displays of porcelain figurines, and dolls that Albina has dressed up with her finest crochet work, is designed to give visitors "a welcome feeling. The walls are adorned with big, soothing, store-bought pictures of the Rocky Mountains and family photographs.

Frank, having taken his place in his easy chair, says of his 60-year marriage that he has to "put up with that old woman." Having said that, he rears his head back, and out comes one of the giant laughs that roar from time to time from his heart.

Albina is amused. She likes to laugh as much as her spouse.

"In 1920," Frank says, "I went to Kaufman County. Friends over there, they call me to come help 'em pick cotton. They had a few parties.

One night they have a little house dance. I got 'quainted with my wife .

She was a good dancer. On twentyfive of June, I went back there to Kaufman. We get married.

"Whew, yeah! We danced like hallelujah! Polkas, waltzes, new dances. We were young. We couldn't dance now if we had walkin' sticks!"

Says Frank, "After we're married a week, we come to Robertson County, Wheelock, Texas. We farm at Wheelock together 42 years and

we raise seven children. They all stay close to us here — six of 'em — and they help us out any way they can.

"Our son, Frank Jr.," Frank says, pointing to photographs on the wall, "he lost his life in Japan — number two war. All-America boy we lost there. Three-hunnerd boys lost their life on a ship. Their remains are at the bottom of the sea.

"Our eldest son, Jerry — he get wounded, seriously wounded in number two war, in Germany, at Rhine River, and he fight nine months for his life in hospitals.

"But he finally made it. When he left for the Army, his weight was 240 pounds ... and when he come home, Christmas Eve, he weighed only 183 pounds."

Albina notes that all three Vytopil boys were in the U.S. Army.

"I'll tell you — I'm proud of my boys, one-hunnerd percent," Frank says.

From the living room wall Frank grabs the framed document that Harry Truman signed "in grateful memory of Private First Class Frank J. Vytopil, Jr., who died in the service of his country in the Pacific area, November 20, 1945."

The date rings with significance.

Wasn't the war over by Nov. 25?

Albina explains that the boys were on patrol when their ship struck a mine. Frank Jr. was to have been home for Christmas.

Says Frank, "You can tell the people in your newspaper, the Vytopils — they had a lot of sorrow, and many sad days, and many nights when they couldn't sleep without their boys. But they — they're proud, one-hunnerd percent. of their sons that went when Uncle Sam need 'em to help win number two war . . . They didn't dodge — I believe that's what you call it. Yeah, dodge. They didn't dodge when the Uncle Sam call on 'ern."

Frank says he and Albina "seen plenty hard times," but adds that it hasn't been all bad, either.

"Momma — my wife — she can play the accordion," Frank boasts, instructing Albina to demonstrate her talent.

Albina drops her crochet project and pulls from behind the couch her accordion. From the old pleated instrument she plays a polka, followed by a waltz, with rhythm that would stir a monk.

"Da-da-da, da-da-da . . . Whew!

Momma can play dat accordion!"

Adds Frank, "Lots of time in the old days we work in the fields like dern slaves. My wife would say they're gonna have dance in Cameron or Buckholts or some place. Boy, we take off! Dance like hallelujah!"

Frank, noting that seven of his grandsons served Uncle Sam during the Vietnam conflict, recalls working one Saturday on a fence around the Vytopil homestead.

"It was about 4 o'clock, and Momma come and she say we gotta go to SPJST hall to a dance, 'cause two of our grandsons home on furlough. She say they wanna dance with grandma.

"I say, 'Shore, we go to dance, Momma!"

"So we go over to dance, and these two grandsons already there with their parents — our children. We walk in the hall, and they recognize us, and boy, it was huggin' and kissin' 'an'= :cryin'; aiL; at the . same

time.

"One grandson say, 'Come on, grandpa. We gonna buy you a bottle a' beer!"

"So we went in the bar. I look up and notice my wife jump up from her table. She's running to the front door of the hall — running' pretty good.

"I look over there and notice two more grandsons come in dance hall!

Hallelujah!

"So we start huggin' an' kissin' all over again, and we get another table. One grandson says the Vytopils look like a bunch of blackbirds what set on the ground.

"Well, one of the grandboys takes me by my arm and says, 'Come on, grandpa, I'm gonna buy you a bottle a' beer.'

"So we're in the bar drinkin' a little beer when here come in the hall two patrolmen — highway officers.

"I knew one of 'em. The one I know, he says, `Mr. Vytopil, is all four a' them soldiers your grandsons?'

"An' I said, `Yes sir.'

"An' he say, `I bet you're proud of 'em.'

"An' I said, `Yes sir, you bet.

"One-hunnerd percent.' " Frank and Albina Vytopil could "dance like hallelujah."

Freeway Maintenance Zone Deaths Prompt DHTActions Leslie Kovar is alive.

He is nervous, still favoring a leg fresh out of its cast, but he is back on his job.

Two of his co-workers won't be back: One was killed when a pickup skidded into his crew last January, another will perhaps never regain the use of his arm.

Kovar is one of 25 Houston highway workers injured since January of 1980; he feels lucky not be one of the 12 dead.

"The first day I came back out here I was really scared," states Kovar as traffic whips past his work site. "Every time I heard brakes squeal, I was ready to run."

On this stretch of 1-45 in north Houston, the cars and trucks pound by at a rate of 7,000 per hour. During this day, as Kovar's crew repairs damaged guardrails, 50,000 vehicles will move past their safety cones and dump trucks.

All that is required to repeat the January accident is one of these 50,000 drivers to be drunk, drugged, reckless, or simply inattentive.

Since January 1, 1980, 12 men and women have been killed and 25 injured while performing highway maintenance and construction work in the Houston area alone. The problem is not confined to that area, however. Workers have been killed or seriously injured in almost all areas of the state in the past months.

The most common factor in these accidents is the failure of drivers to reduce speed and heed posted warnings in construction and maintenance zones. These warnings include signs, barricades, flashing lights and flag persons. In spite of all these measures, the tragic accidents continue to occur.

We are proud of the accomplishments of the men and women who work to build and maintain the best and safest possible highway facilities. I hope every Texan shares our pride.

I also hope fervently that every Texan will keep in mind the safety of the men and women working on the road as well as their own safety when driving through maintenance and construction zones.

All of us in the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation will appreciate anything you, as a news executive, can do to bring the magnitude of this urgent problem home to your readers, listeners and viewers.

WHOOSH. WHOOSH. WHOOSH. They come like artillery shells... by the time you hear them it's already too late.

"We have to stay on our toes constantly and try to work in such a manner that we're always conscious of this traffic," says Arnold Vyviall, maintenance supervisor in the north Houston district of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (DHT). "If there's anything out of the ordinary we can take action, but this isn't always possible. When you're working in noise, you don't hear as well as you would normally."

"Our main problem has been traffic control," Vyviall continues. "We've had good luck with perhaps 90 percent of the public; perhaps 8 percent of these drivers left something to be desired; but that 2 percent has just about undone us."

The rash of accidents caused by this "2 percent" in Houston and across the rest of Texas has forced DHT to take a number of immediate actions. In the Houston district, an extra lane is being blocked off and extra trucks are placed

in blocking positions between traffic and workers. The closure of the additional lane slows traffic and, in congested areas, increases bottlenecking.

"We're weighing public convenience against the lives of these workers," states Dick Kabat, district administrative engineer, "and we do not hesitate to protect them."

When possible, the district is rescheduling night work to daylight hours during the week and on weekends.

This was prompted by the fact that all but one of the recent Houston accidents occurred at night.

The main problem in these maintenance zones is speeding.

Although studies have proven that a manned and waiting police vehicle is the best way to slow traffic, police forces are too understaffed to provide each maintenance zone with an officer. So, other measures must be considered.

DHT is investigating the use of portable barriers, rumble strips, controlled queuing, warning devices that alert work crews when their site is transgressed, and several versions of crash attenuators. All these require additional work load and expense on a department aireaay stretched thin.

There is little choice but to take action. In 1979, according to DPS statistics, there were 11,319 accidents in maintenance zones; 2,200 of them related to construction in progress.

Studies by the Texas Transportation Institute reveal that the maintenance zone accidents increase with the density of population. Houston -leads the statistics followed by Dallas and San Antonio.

The recent rash of accidents comes as bitter news for DHT. The department is now forced to take action to defend itself against the public it serves.

For workers like Leslie Kovar, the "2 percent" have made their workdays tense and filled with anticipation of another fatal crash into their crew. They want out of the traffic so they can relax.

They take no breaks for coffee or lunch but rather eat "on the run."

"It's hard working out here because traffic goes by so fast," says Kovar.

"We're doing the best we can and trying to do it as fast and as safe as we can. I just wish they would slow down."

Dvakrat, stokrat are adverbs.

Distributives are formed by using the preposition "po" po jednom, po dvou, po ttech, po peti, etc. (one at a time ...po prve, po druhe, po tteti (the first time, etc.).

Fractions The denominator ends in -- ina: Jedna polovina 1/2; jedna ttetina 1/3; jedna etvrtina 114; dve petiny 2/5; pet sestnactin 5/16, etc.
