Holland Lodge To Host District II Fall Meeting

Mr. and Mrs. John Coufal, Jr.

SPJST Couple Celebrates 50th Wedding Anniversary John and Vlasta Coufal have never had to worry about forgetting their wedding anniversary: The whole seems to remember. They were married June 29, 1931, the day of Temple's 50th birthday. Now the couple is celebrating their 50th anniversary, and Temple is celebrating its 100th birthday. That the town's celebration and the couple's marriage fell on the same day was deliberate. "I just thought at the time how nice it would be to always celebrate our anniversary along with Temple," said Mrs. Coufal. Mr. and Mrs. John Coufal, Jr. were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary 2-5 p.m. Sunday June 28th, 1981 at the Temple Brethren Church, 808 East Central. Hosts for the reception were their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bill R. (Carolyn) Haynes of Irving, their son and daughter-inlaw, Mr. and Mrs. Stan W. Coufal of Arlington; also their grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Don (Michelle Haynes) Waddle and Randall Haynes of Irving, Debra, Cathy and J. R. Coufal of Arlington. The couple were married June 29th, 1931 (Temple's 50th anniversary) at the Hus Memorial in Temple by the Rev. Joseph Hegar. Coufal, one of the oldest practicing barbers in Temple, is semi-retired, and works only a few

days a week. He received his barber's training at the Moler Barber College in San Antonio in 1925. After graduating from college his first job was with the U.S. Army's 12th Field Artillery at Ft. Sam Houston (cutting the hair of Army recruited soldiers.) Later he barbered in Rogers. In January of 1926 he opened the East Side Barber Shop at 1203 East Ave. C in Temple, and, for the past 55 years, has been barbering in the same location. For 45 of the 55 years he also served men patients with barber needs (mostly shaves) in King's Daughters Hospital. "I never used to lock the front door of my shop," he said with a shake of his head. "People would wander in and out and I could leave it open all day Sunday. Can't do that anymore. And I used to always walk home from my shop, but I don't feel safe doing that anymore either." He and his wife recalled days of walking downtown Temple to shop. "It grieves me sometimes to think about the old days when downtown Temple would come alive on Saturdays," Mrs. Coufal said. "Women would have a ball gathering downtown to shop and talk. I've known Temple since I was big enough to go to town," she said. The couple recollected trips with their parents in buggies to town. Both of them grew up on farms and recall parking their mules at Jack Nichol's Mule Yard during trips to town. "As children we used to love to park the buggies and watch goldfish (Continued on Page 12)

Dear Members and Friends: Greetings to all of you members from Lodge No. 80! Our July meeting was held Monday evening, July 6. The meeting was called to order by President D. I. Bohac at 8 p.m. The Pledge to the Flag was recited by all members present. Roll call of officers showed the Vice President Bertrand absent and also Recording Secretary A. Martinets. The minutes of the June meeting were read by Treasurer Glen Latham due to the absence of Brother Martinets. The minutes were accepted as read. We had one new member to join our ranks at Lodge No. 80 in the name of Adrea Lucille Reumke, welcome to our midst! Brother Otto Horelica gave a brief report of the trip that he and his wife made through the states of Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin and Colorado. They reported that the crops in those parts were not very good. We did not have much business to discuss regarding our lodge activities at the meeting. We only had two dances at the hall in June. Saturday, June 21, we did not have a dance due to the street dance at Holland when they had their corn festival; and one Saturday, we had to cancel a dance due to the flood we had during that afternoon. We had the Kunz-Barabas Reunion at the American Legion Hall in Bellville, Sunday, June 28. We had a good turnout. It was nice to see a lot of kinfolks from all parts of Texas. We used to have those reunions separately (the Barabas and Kunz), so this year we combined them and it makes it real nice that way. Our mother's maiden name was Kunz. Well, in another week or so, the farmers, in this area, will begin to harvest (weather permitting) one of the best milo crops that I have seen grown here. The cotton crop is just in the making stage, so it's hard to estimate what it will make. The grass and cattle are in fine shape. Oh, yes, we will host the fall District II meeting here at Lodge No. 80, Sunday, August 9; so all you SPJST members make plans to (Continued on Page 12)
