Czech Language Program at Temple Junior College Received Donation TEMPLE — The Czech language program at Temple Junior College has received a $500 donation from the SPJST Supreme Lodge to be used for scholarships and enrichment of the program. Dr. H. C. Farrell, Jr., dean, and Calvin Chervenka, coordinator of the TJC Czech program, accepted the contribution from SPJST representatives: Henry E. Vitek, District II Dir.; Nick A. Morris, president; Bernard Gebala, vice president, and Leonard Mikeska, secretary-treasurer. SPJST has been making annual contributions to the TJC Czech program as well as other high schools, colleges and universities in Texas for a number of years. A total of $8,000 was allocated for support of Czech programs at educational institutions across the state in 1981. The SPJST officials present indicated that the society is very happy to continue with the donation and that Czech is now being taught at more educational institutions in the state than in any previous time since the 1920s. Other recipients of SPJST funds include Texas Tech University, University of Texas, Brazosport College, San Jacinto College, University of Houston, Eastfield College, Alvin Community College, Spring Branch ISD, Flatonia High School and the TAMU Czech Club. The TJC Czech program includes a study of the language as well as Czech cultural heritage. TJC was
the first junior college in the state to Czech as a foreign language and now offers both credit and noncredit classes, Chervenka said. Czech has been offered on a regular basis at TJC since 1967. "We are very appreciative of the continued support from the SPJST and other groups and individuals," Dr. Farrell said. "They have helped make possible an active Czech program at TJC."
