The weekend of May 2 and 3, your editor and his family plus the Czechoslovakian Folk Dancers of West (of which group our two sons are a part) attended the Polka Festival Saturday. The dancers really did their part to help enhance the program after the parade. All of us enjoyed the day and we returned the next day to enjoy some more entertainment.

Saturday everyone certainly enjoyed the hospitality of the Ennis City Officials including Mayor James R. Wilson, Mayor Pro-tern (our own SPJST member) Sister Dolfie Hrabina, Brother Martin Zapletal, chairman of the Ennis Polka Festival and also a member of Lodge No. 25, Dr. B. J. Reel, the entire Chamber of Commerce and, of course, the fraternal fellowship of all the members at the three lodge facilities, namely: SPJST Lodge No. 25, SPJST Lodge No. 135-Sokol Gymnastic Center, and KJT. We are sure everyone enjoyed themselves during the two-day festivities; the opportunity was there to do so! We especially enjoyed the music of all the orchestras and the athletic finesse of the Sokol gymnasts at the Sokol Gymnastic Center at Lodge No. 135 both days.

These two days were well-spent in company with nice and friendly people.

For some time thoughts have been in my mind to write about the needless use of our highways and, indeed, streets, etc., and just this week we have received the following from the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation in Austin. We feel it is well-written and include it in our editorial.

You are encouraged to read it; we feel Mark Berrier said it very clearly and precisely.

AUSTIN — Twenty high school students from across the state have won prizes in the "55 for Texas" editorial contest.

The students submitted editorials on the merits of the 55 mph speed limit and were required to compete

within their school before being eligible for regional competition.

The contest was co-sponsored by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation, the Texas Education Agency, the Texas Joint Council of Teachers of English, and the Texas Association of Journalism Directors.

The 20 winners were chosen by local high school English and Journalism teachers from 125 participating schools to represent each of the 20 Education Service Center districts in the state.

Regional winners were then judged by a team of capitol press corps reporters employed by the HOUSTON CHRONICLE, DALLAS TIMES HERALD, and AUSTIN AMERICAN STATESMAN. Prizes for the contest have been donated by Six Flags Over Texas, Southwest Airlines, and Texas Instruments. ***

By Mark Berrier You are alive today because of the 55 MPH speed limit. Don't laugh — it may be true.

According to statistics from the Texas Office of Traffic Safety, you may be one of the estimated 3,500 Texans alive today who would have died on the highway if the old speed limit and fatality rate had remained unchanged.

Many people think that the 55 MPH speed limit is just a move to save gasoline, and they are half right. It was initially established as a response to the problem of energy conservation and it has been effective in that respect. Driving at 55 instead of 70 increases your mileage from 17 to 40 per cent — that means the average car gets 50 extra miles per tankful.

But fuel economy has only a fraction of the importance of the savings in lives. In 1974 alone, U. S. traffic fatalities dropped 16.8 per cent instead of increasing one per cent as expected — a difference of almost 10,000 lives. In fact, the 55 MPH speed limit is the single most effective means of saving lives ever implemented by the government, including the massive polio immunizations of the sixties.

Despite these statistics, many people still regard the 55 MPH speed limit as ,a case of unwarranted government interference. But these people don't realize that their lives may have been saved by it. They haven't been touched by the death of a family member.

If you don't support the 55 MPH speed limit, ask the opinion of someone who has lost a brother, a wife, or a child in a highway accident. See what they think about it and take their advice. Save your family and friends from untimely deaths. Drive 55. For you. . .for your family...for Texas.

TION — Dick Smith of Kinder Brothers, an insurance marketing firm, appeared before the board.

After reviewing his credentials, Mr. Smith discussed various innovative marketing approaches and the building of a professional sales force which he felt would be necessary to survive in a competitive market.

REPORT OF PRESIDENT MORRIS He briefly discussed his attendance of the Sons of Hermann Convention in San Antonio and a reinsurance seminar held by Republic National Life Insurance Company. He also commented on the Youth Leaders' Retreat and training seminar at Camp Val Verde, and sought ratification of a few minor changes in the new youth rule book about to be printed.

LOCAL OFFICERS WORKSHOPS --Discussion turned to the planning of future workshops. It was decided that the 1982 workshop will be held at the Home Office and that lodging for one night be allowed for the local lodge presidents, vice presidents, secretaries, financial secretaries, and treasurers and mileage for one automobile per lodge with a catered noon meal.

LODGE MEETINGS — A request from a lodge was considered asking permission to hold meetings quarterly instead of monthly and permission was granted per Art. 54 (a) of our by-laws.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:30 p.m. until 9 a.m., April 15, 1981 YOUTH DEPARTMENT -- He reported that Jann Thomas was molding into her job nicely and that he appreciates her attitude and willingness to follow our system and methods, both in and out of the office.

President Morris' written and oral report was accepted.

REPORT OF VICE PRESIDENT GEBALA He reported that the major portion of the new office equipment is now in place.

ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING A status report of the computer conversion was given. Report was made on additional software that was obtained for check reconciliation and payroll. The total cost of the computer will be approximately $113,000 and software approximately $33,000 for a total of $146,000.

SALES MEETINGS/BANQUETS — There was a general discussion on procedures for sales meetings and banquets.

Vice Presidents Gebala's written and oral report was accepted.

REPORT OF SECRETARYTREASURER MIKESKA LETTERS — A letter was read from Mildred Holeman giving credit to President Morris and Legal Advisor Lesikar on their professionalism in conducting the Presidents' section of the workshop in Hallettsville, and to Vice President Gebala on conducting the District V Sales Banquet; and to the professionalism of the present Supreme Lodge officers.

A letter was read from Calvin C. Chervenka, chairman of the Czech Heritage Day of the Temple Centennial discussing tentative plans for the Czech Heritage Day of the Temple Centennial celebration. He stated that Czechs everywhere should feel honored that Temple citizens have seen fit to recognize the importance of the Czechs in the growth and development of Temple and setting aside Friday, June 26, as Czech Heritage day.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska was selected as the Supreme Lodge officer to serve as the liaison with the Czech Heritage Day Committee and the S. L. A sum of money was authorized to be made available, if needed, to make the Czech Heritage Day activities successful and of the highest quality.

It was agreed to grant permission to direct all Temple citizens and visitors to the SPJST museum during Czech Heritage Day. The remainder of Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska's report was deferred to allow time for two separate delegations from two SPJST Lodges to present requests for lodge building loans. The Supreme Lodge met with each delegation and heard their requests and plans for constructing and operating lodge buildings.

REAL ESTATE LOANS — He referred to a list of 15 loans delinquent three or more months and his recommendation for action on each and appropriate actions were approved.

Consideration was given to a request from a lodge to refinance their existing loan. Appropriate action was taken after due deliberation.

It was decided to have a small building constructed for storage of lawn maintenance equipment.

ROYALTY AND MINERAL INTEREST — A lease of property in Cameron County in which the Society owns a mineral interest was ratified. The cash consideration was $60,058.

IRS FORM 990/990T All local lodge presidents and secretaries were informed of the filing deadlines for IRS Forms 990/990T. The letter included a request that a copy be furnished to the Home Office as required.

DEATH CLAIMS — The board was informed of a new reporting procedure on all claims of $11,000 or more.

It involves filing a special report with the State Comptroller.

He reported that a contestable claims report is obtained on all claims on recently issued policies.

MBERSHIP PINS — There was a brief discussion on membership pins to be awarded for tenure of membership in excess of 50 years as proposed by a standing committee.

The matter was tabled.

STATE BOARD EXAMINATION — The examination was said to have been completed and the official report should be received by year end.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska's written and oral report was accepted.

REPORT OF FINANCIAL SECRETARY MIKULAS He reported that the Society's annual report to the State Board of Insurance had been filed by the due date.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT — He referred to the Society financial statement and discussed several items and changes. It was concluded that the Society had experienced one of the best years in our history.

VESTNIK — Report was made on a recent postage increase and a verification of the mailing list by the Postal Service.

DELINQUENT LODGES -- There were no lodges delinquent with mortuary premiums.

CONVERSION OF CERTIFICATE RECORDS TO COMPUTER — Approximately 20,000 certificates have been entered on computer records.

The conversion project was said to be proceeding according to schedule.

NEW BUSINESS CZECH LANGUAGE GRANTS — A report was heard from the committee on Czech Language Grants. The committee recommended the following donations and the recommendations were approved: 1. $1,000 each for the University of Texas, the University of Houston and Texas Technological University.

2. $500 each for University of Texas Czech Club, University of Houston Czech Club and A &M Czech Club.

3. $500 each to San Jacinto Junior College, Temple Junior College, Brazosport College, Alvin Community College.

4. $250 each to Spring Branch High School, Flatonia High School and Eastfield College.

MISC. — Director Vitek reported to the board that he had been informed that a local lodge had 25 acres of land for sale and was giving the Supreme Lodge an opportunity to purchase. The matter was tabled.

FRATERNAL QUESTIONNAIRE -Vice President Gebala, a member of the NFCA Fraternal Questionnaire Committee, reported on information he obtained on the questionnaire while attending a meeting of the NFCA Fraternal Section.

NFCA PRESS AND PR SECTION MEETING — Director Pokladnik reported on information he obtained at the NFCA Press and PR meeting he recently attended. Much of the meeting involved Society publications, their appearance and composition, proper acknowledgement of sales personnel, brevity, and general interest appeal of letters appearing in the publication, and recognition of employees and officers of the organization. It was pointed out that only five Societies in the nation have weekly publications.

I felt this was a very generous action for them to take. They were busy making posters for the Polka Fest which will be held at the Eagle's Hall on July 16-17 there in New Braunfels. They also made 120 chicks for tray favors for the guests at a local rest, home for Easter.

Youth Leader Gladys Jasek is doing a very good job and is to be commended for her fine leadership.

She has a fine group of youth members.

The adult lodge meeting followed the youth meeting. I was very impressed by the active participation of the nice number in attendance.

The officers of Lodge No. 185 are: President Ernest Jasek, 1st Vice President Charles Schandua, 2nd Vice President Charles Orsak, Secretary Theresa Haag, Treasurer Howard Athes, Financial Secretary Margaret Hrabel and Reporter Faye Lynn Balmos.

New Rules and Regulations were distributed and will be voted on at the next meeting. It is a well-written document and shows much time and effort went into its drafting.

The lodge will have a Spring Fling May 17, which is a chicken barbecue and fun-day for its members.

Ann Marie Matchek won the $15 door prize.

SPRINKLER SYSTEM/LANDSCAPING —It was agreed to authorize the installation of a sprinkler system and landscaping of the new parking lot areas.

Director Vitek thanked everyone for the cards and flowers during his illness.

Waco Lodge No. 66 Announces Meeting Date

Our Choral Group, accompanied by our orchestra, presented several song numbers to the deligheof the audience; the weather hindered the attendance but the ones there enjoyed it. Of course, it is hard on our directors Tim Kostom for the Choral Groitqa and Rudy Dybala for the Czech Concert Orchestra.

With sorrow, we bow our heads in the passing away of our friend Jan Kupka of Praha, Czechoslovakia who passed away April 1, 1981, at the age of 75 years. Mr. Jan Kupka visited with his close friends Tim and Rosalee Kostom here in Houston many times and the household of Jan and his spouse Slava Kupka was their meeting place when visiting Czechoslovakia. Slavinka, their daughter, is now married to Ernest Richter and resides in Frankfurt, Germany. She made her first visit with Sister Helen Valcik and her late husband, Steve Valcik; since then Slavinka and her father, Jan and mother, Slava made several visits to the USA and made many friends here in Houston. For myself and my brother, Frank Dvorak and his wife, Frances, we have fond memories of the Kupka's hospitality in their beautiful home while in Praha, Czechoslovakia.

Surviving Jan Kupka are: wife, Slava Kupka; one daughter, Slavinka and son-in-law, Ernest Richter; grandson, Michalek Richter; one son, Jan Kupka and daughter-in-law, Lubuse and granddaughter, Libuska Kupka. We express our sincere sympathy to the surviving family and our friends.

News From Lodge No. 88

Brief

The Czech Fest held May 1-2-3 in Rosenberg, Texas, as usual, is a big affair; the Choral Group and the Czech Concert Orchestra both of Lodge No. 88 performed Sunday afternoon. With the rainy weather, Sunday, it was a hardship for the performers to reach Rosenberg. It started to pour down early Sunday morning and kept it up through the day, to slack up in short intervals.

Many of the members were not able to make it on account of flooded places and had to turn around and stay at home, but the following brave ones made it and performed in the afternoon: Harry and Mickey Rice, Bill and Evelyn Vornsand, Tim and Rosalee Kostom, Frank and Mary Tilich, Arnold and Naomi Spencer, Bill and Pat Neskorik, Irma O'Conner, Irene Slovacek, Emily Zemko, Helen Hegwood, Louise Schutte and Gene Barcak.

The Czech Concert Orchestra also had a few members missing, but the following were able to make it; Arnold Baca, Florian Bartos, Bob Breaux, John Dybala, Louis Dybala, Edwin Dybala of Conroe, Louis Fought, Joseph Gallow, Lenard Miller, John Hutchinson, Frank Kubena, Lenard Miller, Ladgie Pavelka, James Rohde and Bernice Seller.

Softball Team Gives Results And Plans For Benefit Dance SPJST

Dear Brother§ and Sisters: Tuesday night, April 28,'1981, we played the Accountants team and, I hate to say it but we lost by a score of 6 to 5. It was a real close game, we scored 3 runs in the top of the 7th inning, feeling that we had the game won, only the other team rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning for the win. This is probably the worst team in our league, and, if a team isn't on its toes, this can happen.

Tommy Yates started the game and actually deserved a better fate and Lionel Schulz pitched to the last 2 batters and he also couldn't put out the fire. In total, T. Yates allowed 6 hits, 6 base-on-balls, 3 strikeouts, and all 6 runs were charged to him.

Leading the team offensively were Don Jarma with a double, triple and a single; Dan Palm with a single, a walk and a sacrifice, Danny Yates had a walk, Jerry Zabojnik with a single and Paul Bartos with a single. Needless to say, 2 or 3 more hits could have meant a victory. I still say we have a real good team and we will win a lot more games

this season.

Our annual Softball Team Benefit Dance is nearly here; it will be held Saturday night, May 30 at 8:30 p.m. at our Lodge No. 84 Hall, 2625 Floyd Street. The very popular Czech Harvesters Orchestra will be playing your favorite tunes, so make plans to attend this special dance. The team will deeply appreciate your attendance at this dance; the funds are desperately needed for expenses of fielding a team in the Dallas City League. Our funds are depleted partly because the team had to buy new uniforms; our old ones were worn out. If I say so myself, the new gray uniform looks very good. The players had to dig into their own pockets for part of the costs of the uniforms; the first time ever in 28 years, so you all can see we really need your support this year. Please be generous and come out to our Benefit Dance May 30th and give us your support as you have in the past.

Dear Members and Friends: Lodge No. 172 will have its Spring covered-dish meal and dance May 15, at 7 p.m.; that will be on a Friday night. Bring a covered-dish (enough for you and your guest(s) ); the dance will be free. A covered-dish of meat and vegetable or a meat and sweet will be greatly appreciated. Sick Committee Report: Members who were sick were Alice Jochen, Gus Florian, Harlan Jochen, Rudy Cernoch and Bill Brezina. It seems that all are feeling better and released from the hospitals at the present time.

New members for the month were Bryan Boles and Scott Havran. We wish to welcome them.

Members' free barbecue and free dance were held Saturday, May 2 and all had an enjoyable day.

Capsule drawing was held, and we are very sorry that Willie Emil Brezina was not with us to claim the $50 prize. We will draw for $50 again in June; come out and you may be the lucky one!

Our youth leader had a special Mother's Day project and held a drawing for a very special lucky mother. Congratulations, Sister Annie Luckemeyer and many thanks to Sister Henrietta Veselka for being so thoughtful.

Elgin Lodge No. 18 Monthly Meeting May Fete Scheduled!

Our April monthly meeting Lodge No. 18 was well-attended.

Door prize was won by Lodge No. 18 Secretary Loraine Brian. Congratulations, Loraine!

Our lodge home will be having a few changes soon. The Board of Trustees will be changing some doors and even installing a new opening into the bar area to help with the delivery of drinks and supplies to the bar.

The trees that Brother Albert and Sister Ann Mikulencak planted last year are really growing and, perhaps, soon we can enjoy the nice shade for picnic grounds.

Our May Fete will be held May 17 beginning at 2 p.m. with a battle dance between Vrazels and Fabulous Six. The Cystic Fibrosis Skate-a-thon is coming up in June and then plans will be underway for the Western Day Activities, which is scheduled for July.

Scholarship Awards At U of H This school year 1980-1981, five students registered in second-year Czech study at the University of Houston were each awarded a scholarship of $150.00. These awards are appreciated more because of the rising costs of schooling.

All of the recipients named below demonstrated a great interest in Czech study and participated in most all class activities: Lloyd Ernstes, Jr. Mary Felcman Jeanne Jacques Frank Mikulastik Jerry Sinitiere All have written their notes of thanks to members of Lodge No. 88 in Houston for their thoughtfulness in making the awards possible. BY ELGIN LODGE YOUNGSTERS The two-week Beautification Campaign for Elgin was a big success.

We were real excited over the enthusiasm of our Youth Department.

We spent a full day 'working in the Elgin Park; between truck loads being taken to the dump site, we managed to spend some time taking advantage of the swings, slide, etc.

(We apologize for not getting a picture of all the youth participating, some went to help unload trucks and others were at a different area in the park).

Our Annual May Fete will be held Sunday, May 17, at 2 p.m. with a battle dance between Vrazels and Fabulous Six; also, barbecue plate lunch will be served.

Practices for the May Fete are scheduled for the first and second Wednesday nights of May from 7 to 9 p.m., and Saturday morning, May 16, from 10 a.m. until 12 noon.

EDUCATIONAL TRIP! DISTRICT VI YAD Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club met Sunday, May 3; the attendance was very good regardless of the bad weather we were having: rain!

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and led by Linda Treumer and Anthony Kresta led a prayer.

The theme was on Mother's Day. Poems were read by Kim Dornak, Jean Dorotik, Michelle Srubar and Karen Kahanek.

Those who won in a contest were in (6-12) 1st—Michelle Srubar, 2nd — Kristi Korenek, 3rd —Kanna Dornak. In (13-17) were: 1st —Vicki Dorotik, 2nd — Rudy Laitkep, 3rd —Karen Kahanek.

New business was election of officers. They are: President Yvonne Kresta, Vice President Vicki Dorotik, Secretary Marjorie Treumer, Treasurer/Assistant Treasurer Karen Kahanek.

Our field trip and camp were also discussed in which the district's youth clubs will take part in June 17th, and camp dates are from June 29 through July 2nd. We will be very busy after school is out There will also be a Youth Achievement Day held in El Campo at St. Phillip's Parish Hall, July 19th.

ON PAST ACTIVITIES Dear Readers, Thursday night, April 30, we had a youth club meeting at our lodge hall.

President Betty Stein called our, regular meeting to order.

Secretary Karen Jochen read the minutes from the previous meeting.

This meeting was then followed by a nice lunch prepared by our nice youth leader and assistant, Sister Henrietta and Brother Eugene Veselka. This was our parent's appreciation.

Parents who were present were Mr. and Mrs. Eric Stein, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Beyer, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kieschnick, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Janik, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Schilhab, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Jochen, Mrs. Anita Pavlicek, and the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Veselka.

All of us had an enjoyable time as we watched our parents play the "Oldy Weds' Game." Some of them must be getting kind of oldy, especially my parents, they could not remember all the facts anymore and could not agree on some of them so they got the "Boobie Prize"! Survivors include his wife, Lucy :Mae Fredo; daughter and son-in-law, Joann and Conrad Zwernemann; grandsons, Bill and Bob Zwernemann; three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Brother Edwin Fojt of Weslaco, Texas, were held at 3 p.m. February 18 in the Bridge Street Church of Christ, with Rev. Bill Roach officiating. Burial was held at Weslaco Cemetery under the arrangements of McCeleb Funeral Home.

A farmer in the area for 46 years, he was the son of the late Joseph and Johanna (Tlucek) Fojt. He was preceded in death by his wife, Aleene (Branum) Fojt who died 31 August 1954.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Wayne Margie Walker of Donna, Texas; one son, Jumny of Weslaco; two sisters, Mrs. Herbert (Martha) Tesch and Mrs. Alfons (Lillie) Michalcik of Hallettsville; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Fojt was preceded in death by his wife, two children, two brothers, and one sister.

May our brother rest in eternal peace.

Brother Sablatura was born in Burleson County 26 October 1905, son of Charlie and Frances Sablatura. He was a building contractor the majority of his working years, and did some farming.

He was a 60-year area resident and a member of St. John's Catholic Church. He was wed to Caroline Slovak 3 July 1934 in Hungerford.

He was preceded in death by five brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Caroline Sablatura of Hungerford; three sons, Edward, Frank and Henry Sablatura, all of Lake Jackson; three sisters, Mary Myska of Beasley, Vlasta Sabrsula of Hungerford and Julia Filip of El Campo; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requested that memorials be sent to St. John's Catholic Church Bell Tower Fund.

May he rest in peace.

Resolution Committee: Charlsie Svetlik Sidonia Svoboda Kathleen Jurca —SPJSTIN MEMORIAM Mrs. Frank Slovak Sr., 87 of Creechville Road, Ennis, died at 5:45 p.m. Thursday in Navarro County Memorial Hospital in Corsicana.

Mrs. Slovak was born 24 June 1893, in Czechoslovakia, the daughter of Tom and Frances (Adamuska) Galetka. In November 1913 she was married to Frank J. Slovak Sr. of Ennis. Mr. Slovak preceded her in death 20 October 1952. Mrs. Slovak moved to Ennis in 1902 and had lived in and near Ennis since that time. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, and other societies.

Survivors include five sons, Bob F. Slovak of Grand Prairie, Frank J. Slovak Jr., Victor Slovak and Johnny Slovak, all of Ennis, Henry Slovak of Denver; four daughters, Mrs. Henry Slovacek, Mrs. Tom Slama and Mrs. Louis Mikel, all of Ennis and Mrs. Bob Harrell of Highland, California; 26 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. John Vrla of Ennis and Mrs. Francis Dlabaj of Dallas; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Sunday in Sanders Funeral Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. John's Catholic Church. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery.

One son, Stanley Slovak, preceded her in death 28 October 1968.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of Lodge No. 9, Snook, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother COLLIN STANLEY, who passed away April 13, 1981, in a Brenham hospital.

Brother Stanley lived in Somerville, Texas, where he was selfemployed for about 45 years. In addition to being a member of our lodge here in Snook, he was also a member of the Marion Mays Post No. 455 of the American Legion and a member of the Sons of Hermann.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, and he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Somerville.

At the time of his death, Brother Stanley had attained the age of 72 years.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. April 14 in the Strickland Funeral Chapel in Somerville.

His survivors include his daughters, Mrs. Pat Wilkening and Mrs. Mike Masek, both of Houston; his sister, Mrs. Irene Cumings of Somerville, and his grandsons, Stan Wilkening, a Texas A ezM student and Jeff Masek of Houston.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sister Annabel Stanley.

MOTL, who passed away Tuesday, April 21, 1981, in a local hospital following a long illness. He was 82 years of age.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23rd, at the Harper-Talasek Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eugene Kotrla officiating. Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery.

Mr. Motl was born in Seaton in 1898 and had lived there almost all of his life. He married the former Vlasta Reznicek in 1922 and they made their home in Seaton. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47 for over 50 years. Mr. Motl had also been a long-time musician in the Bell County area as well as a talented mechanic. He was ticket chairman at Star Hall for several years and active in all Lodge 47 activities. L. J., as he was known to his friends, will be missed by all.

Mr. Motl is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vlasta Motl of Temple; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Symmank and Mrs. Bernice Vanicek, both of Carrollton, Texas and three sisters, Mrs. Ella Ellis of Sugarland, Texas, Mrs. Lillie Maresh of Temple and Mrs. Bessie Moreland of San Angelo.

He is also survived by five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

On about the third day the west portion adjoining First Street Üa th ravel in place and leveled together with the curbing. This view is h due south and constitutes the far portion of the horseshoe or "U'. 't is contemplated that the east portion of the parking lot area will soon look like this and the entire area should be ready for black-topping or asphalting.

Some months ago we brought you a pictorial report of the efforts at that time to re-locate the Library, Archives and Museum areas (LAM) into the basement. That has been completed at a cost less than what the convention allocated for that purpose. Those who have seen the new area marvel at the tasteful and unique displays in that area We continue to have many visitors, including school childrens' groups, and we encourage our members and any interested person or persons to come by and visit what we consider to be the finest collection in the Southwest of its type, certainly in Texas.

At the present time and nearing completion is a project involving the construction of an additional parking lot on the adjacent property owned by the SPJST and located just south of the Home Office building. The accompanying pictures show the start and progress of this construction. The new parking area will, in effect, be a duplicate of the existing parking facilities with a "U" or horseshoeshaped ingress and egress. The present entrance and exit off and onto First Street on the west end will be closed and both the entrance and exit will be off and onto Main Street. The Supreme Lodge took this action because it has been evident in the past that when there are a large number of visitors or enmmittee meetings here in addition the employees, parking space is at a premium. In this connection, a decision was made in the recent Supreme Lodge meeting to hold the 1982 local lodge officers' workshops here in the Home Office and the additional space will certainly come in handy on that Saturday, although no employees' cars will be here that day which should provide adequate parking.

In conjunction with the parking lot area, it has been necessary to construct a new and larger equipment shed to house the various tools and equipment used to maintain the area around the Supreme Lodge building. The new shed is being constructed on the extreme south portion of the property which adjoins Centennial Savings & Loan.

The old shed will be removed.

The Supreme Lodge body (5 officers and 7 directors) makes the overall decisions on these projects, some of which were acted on in the last convention. They then delegate the responsibility for working out the details of these projects, including the purchase and setting up of the Electronic Data Processing (EDP) and Computer equipment.

The officers, in turn, meet and decisions are made jointly or on a consensus basis which involves ALL 5 officers. The only exception is when one officer is out of the office or out of town and a decision has to be made. The 5 officers hold many meetings on these matters. No one officer is responsible or makes decisions for the entire' Aroject, although someone has to be primarily involved in seeing that the decisions of the 5 are carried out and implemented. (There's no point in all

5 talking with a contractor individually after a decision has been reached; that isn't practical or good business.) The president, as Chief Executive Officer, and secretarytreasurer are almost always required to sign whatever legal documents/contracts have -to be executed on behalf of the SPJST with architects, contractors, subcontractors, et. al. The legal adviser is frequently called upon to examine and give opinions on various documents to see that the interests of the SPJST are protected from a legal standpoint. Another example is the Annual Statement and supplements to the State Board of Insurance, which are signed by the president, vice president, secretary-treasurer, and financial secretary. Thus, what we do here of a broader nature is done JOINTLY and after mutual consultation, that is, on the basis of CONSENSUS where all are involved.

Of course, day-to-day operations of each officer's area of responsibility are pretty much that officer's "baby"; that's what each of us are paid for -for making executive decisions because that's what we are expected and supposed to do. Our results are then reported to and examined by the entire Supreme Lodge in their quarterly meetings. It is during these meetings that any procedural problems are addressed and solutions advanced. Generally speaking, we govern ourselves by the rule of thumb that if sizeable amounts of money are involved we either seek the prior approval of the entire Supreme Lodge, o s- 'n the case of an emergency, experr i the needed funds and seek ratification of such action in the Supreme Lodge meetings.
