Taylor and Ennis Workshops A Success

Recognition Given To District V Sales Representatives Recently, another large group of sales representatives in our SPJST of District V was recognized for their accomplishments in sales for 1980.

The occasion, held April 5 at Lodge No 88 in Houston, honored sales people from all areas in District V. They were also treated to a delicious meal catered by Willie Wehring Catering.

District V Director Louis Hanus, who was in charge of hosting the group, handled the introductory remarks and then assisted Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernie Gebala for award presentations. Prior to the presentations, he expressed appropriate remarks to the sales force.

Sales Representatives in District V wrote certificates issued totaling $3,543,000 and Sister Della Kadlecek of Lodge No. 88 secured the sum of $482,500; she was recognized as the State's Number One Producer in certificates issued last year on the books. Sister Kadlecek is a member of longstanding, and she joined the insurance sales force in 1965, which (Continued on Page 3)

Notice to District IV Members!

The District IV meeting will be held Sunday, April 26, 1981 with Lubbock Lodge No. 157 as host lodge. District IV Sales Representatives' Banquet will also be held on the same day, beginning at 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Gridiron Restaurant at 4413 -50th Street in Lubbock. The District IV meeting will be held at Lou Stubbs Party House at 35th Street and Avenue -L in Lubbock, at 2 p.m. (The place of the former location as planned will not be finished remodeling by the date of our events.)

A youth program and refreshments will follow after the meeting.

should cherish these rights, but we must accept the duties that go with it.

The dictionary defines citizenship as the status of a person who owns allegiance to the government in return for his political rights and privileges. Citizenship is a reciprocal agreement. For example, protection at home and abroad, freedom of press, speech, thoughts, and worship are rights legally guaranteed. Services legally required of citizens by the government are serving on juries, paying taxes, obeying the laws of the land, and serving in the military forces. The recognition and acceptance of this concept of the reciprocal nature of citizenship is the first requirement of a good citizenship.

Good citizenship means going the second mile in addition to that first mile which is legally required. It means one should make it a duty to exercise the privilege of voting in all elections; to keep informed by careful reading and observation in order to be an intelligent voter. Moreover, good citizenship means keeping an open mind, actively shaping a just public opinion. A good citizen actively participates in, and gives sincere support to, worthwhile civic and national organizations. A good citizen not only tolerates differences in beliefs, but actively defends the right of others to hold their beliefs.

The life, liberty, and property of others are doubly protected, for the thoughtful citizen will do or say nothing that may be used as harmful propaganda.

Good citizenship is the result of training and practice. In our homes we learn 'the first lessons in good citizenship: to get along with our families; to carry our load of responsibilities; as we enter school, we have a wider opportunity to practice what we have learned at home. Our friendships broaden and become dearer to us; we learn to lead as well as follow. Community affairs begin to occupy part of our time. Here, again, we practice good citizenship by entering willingly and enthusiastically into the services assigned; by the time we leave high school, we have molded the character of our citizenship by our daily living.

Good citizenship can be defined in so many words — as I have attempted to do here. Perhaps the best pattern for good citizenship is expressed in this teaching: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," and good citizenship will be a reality in our home, our community, our Nation and in our world.

IF YOU LOVE YOUR COUNTRY! If you love your country — show it!

If you love your flag, salute it!

Taylor and Ennis (Continued from Page 1) some of the supplies. The ladies in , the kitchen were Frances Tallas, Lillie Krueger, Glydas Tindall and Kathryn Adamek. Some of these ladies also baked kolaches. The manner in which they prepared and served the food was just super, and everything was enjoyed by those present. We had always remembered to invite a staff photographer from the Taylor Daily Press to take pictures, but at the last minute realized that we had not done so and also that we had failed to take one of the Polaroid cameras from the Home Office. Our apologies to all those who attended at Taylor.

It seems that that particular time of the month is not a good time for officers in the Central Texas or Williamson Counties area to attend because it comes right in the midst of milo-planting time. Milo, or sorghum, is a very important money crop for the farmers in several Central Texas counties and they certainly cannot be faulted for taking to the fields during this period and putting in their crop. It was suggested that the Taylor Workshop could be set two or three weeks earlier. This will definitely be taken into consideration next year.

We do thank those who took the time and made the effort to attend.

We believe that all benefited by it.

Incidentally, the membership at Lodge 29 is to be commended for the remodeling of their entire stage area. It could hardly be recognized from the old stage. They will be hosting this year's State Royalty on September 26th, but the membership felt that these improvements were needed, nevertheless.

The Ennis Workshops were reasonably well-attended and from the accompanying pictures we can see that there were a few present who had not been present previously. I regret that I was unable to be present because of a conflict in previous scheduling because I was present at a weekend retreat of the District Youth Counselors, their assistants, youth leaders and their assistants at Camp Val Verde. I asked Vice President Bernie Gebala to "pinch-hit" for me and he was good enough to do so. From all reports, he and Bro. Reuben Lesikar covered everything well in the Presidents and Vice Presidents' Section and in the joint session.

Although the secretaries, financial secretaries, and treasurers met jointly in one session, they chose to take separate pictures of their respective groups. Both Bros.

Mikeska and Mikulas report an enthusiastic and receptive group of lodge officers in their sessions.

Every since we have been having these workshops in Ennis, Fay and Floyd Casebolt of Casebolt Studios have been gracious enough to come and take pictures of the groups and this year was no exception. We thank them very sincerely. My guess is that the pictures will appear in the Ennis Daily News in addition to those we send to the Vestnik.

It must also be noted that one of the officers who had been unable to attend the Hallettsville Workshops from that part of the State due to the flu drove to Ennis and he was Steve Duyka, financial secretary

Math Sladky Band Visits SPJST Museum

Math Sladky of New Waverly, Nebraska visited the SPJST Museum on Thursday, April 2, 1981. Ms. Thelma Bartosh conducted the tour. The Band members were very impressed with what they saw and they enjoyed the tour.

They departed the Home Office at about 3 p.m. for an engagement that evening at Round Rock Lodge No. 187.

Wato Lodge No. 66 Welcomes New. Members (Next Meeting May 17th)

Teachers of Czech Invited To Prague Institute January 8, 1981 Dr. Svatava Jakobson, who is associated with the Slavic Department at the University of Texas, received a letter from Mr. Kouba of Prague. He asked for a recommendation of several teachers of Czech to participate in a Summer Seminar. The Institute is scheduled to last a period of 20 days, beginning July 6.

The following instructors have been contacted to submit applications for this conference: Charles Heyda, instructor at Spring Branch Community College; Thadius Polasek, instructor at Flatonia High School; and W. E. Souchek, instructor at University of Houston.

To date no answer has been received as to the acceptance or rejection of our applications. Whatever the decision, it is highly commendable that we in Texas are being considered as participants in Czechsiovak Educational Circles.

May our efforts in continuing the study of Czech literature, customs and language continue to flourish.

Club Conference Czech

The Czech Club of the University of Texas at Austin will sponsor the Eighth Annual Conference of Czech Students and Teachers Saturday, April 25 at the SPJST Hall in Taylor.

Registration for the Conference will begin at 1 p.m. immediately followed at 2 p.m. by the program. It will consist of guest speakers sharing ideas and experiences on various Czech-related topics. A social hour will start at 5 p.m. which will precede a barbecue dinner to be catered by Rudy Mikeska at 6:30 p.m. Joe Patek and his orchestra will provide the music for a dance that will follow the dinner at 8:30 p.m.

Tickets for the event are $5.00 per person, but persons wishing only to attend the dance may purchase tickets for $3.00 each or $5.00 for a couple.

Directions: From Austin take 135 North. Turn off at Hwy. 79 to Taylor. You'll pass through Round Rock and Hutto, following the Hwy. 79 signs all the way through Taylor.

At the second red light turn left. At the next red light turn right. You'll pass by the Catholic Church and the K.C. Hall and pass under the loop going out of town. After the loop turn left on the next road (FM619).

One-half mile down the road on the right is the SPJST Hall Praha 29.

George Petrek, Czech Club, University of Texas at Austin

Dear Members: Lodge No. 66 held their meeting Sunday, April 12, with President Daniel Nors presiding.

The flags were presented by Larry Brem and Randy Nors. The Pledge of •Allegiance and Lodge Motto were recited by the members.

In roll call of officers, all were present, except Czech Reporter Otto Hanus.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the March meeting; they were approved as read.

President Nors had everyone to stand in a moment of silent prayer for our member, Sister Thelma Gilbert, who passed away April 5, 1981.

In correspondence thank you notes were read from Sister Dorothy Warren for cards sent on her recent stay in the hospital for surgery; also for the baby's congratulations card sent on the arrival of their baby.

State Field Manager Brother Silas Smith thanked the lodge for the use of their hall for the Sales Representatives' Class held in March and for the refreshments served following the class.

Letters were also read from the Texas Commission of Folk Arts of Austin, Texas, and the National Sokol Association of the Sokol Slet to be held in Fort Worth and about placing an ad in their brochure; also a letter from the March of Dimes.

Brother Henry West, Board of Trustees' chairman, had Sister Engelke read the minutes of the Board meeting held Wednesday night, April 1st. They, have purchased a ceiling fan to be put on the stage and some circulating fans to be placed in other areas of the hall; also twenty tables to be used to replace tables in the club room.

Brother Shilling, Entertainment Committee chairman, said that next month all mothers will be honored.

There will be drawings held and food will be served after the meeting. Brother Shilling thanked the ladies who helped in the kitchen preparing the sandwiches and also for the desserts.

Sister Parma gave the youth club report. The club had gone bowling and would have a contest on decorated Easter eggs and cards and would have an Easter egg hunt for all children in the lodge after the meeting.

Brother Emil Hanus, Linden Hall treasurer, gave the quarterly report for January, February and March.

Brother Leon Hensel reported the Auditing Committee had met and audited the Lodge Linden Hall and Youth Club books; all were in order.

Brother Ed Mazanec gave a report for the Cheer Committee; one of our eldest members, Sister Stransky, gave the committee a check for $100 to use as they wish for Lodge No. 66. Brother Frank Parma made a motion they purchase the ceiling fan for the stage and put Sister Stransky's name on it. The motion carried. Sister Stransky has done this for several years. Items have been purchased for the hall such as: a clock, electric cooker and other useful kitchen items; also we

wish to send our thanks for these generous gifts.

Brother Ed Mazanec also thanked everyone for all the cards, phone calls and flowers sent to Sister Agnes while she was in the hospital.

In addition he thanked the Board of Trustees for the pot plant they had sent. Brother Ed said it was great to be home again and that Sister Agnes was doing great. She can walk with a cane now and even without it at times. It was so wonderful to see Sister Agnes at the meeting today for we have missed Sister Mazanec and Brother Mazanec; it's good to have you both back in circulation, again!

We wish to thank the Board of Trustees for the new coffee urn and slicer they have purchased for the kitchen. These items were needed and are appreciated.

We also thank Sister Ruby Orsag who, so generously, has brought her slicer to us to be used. We really appreciate it.

Health Committee Report: Sister Polly Gaidusek reported that getwell cards were sent to Brother Joe Jaska who has had surgery and we all wish him a good recovery; to Sister Mabel Crow who was in the hospital, we hope she is doing OK; to Brother Henry West who had been in the VA Hospital. Brother Henry looks fine and has a great sun-tan; keep it up, Brother Henry! Also to Sister Matilda Hanus who is still in Scott and White Hospital in Room 484, Temple, TX 76501, we all hope and pray that she will be OK and come home soon. Good luck, Sister Harms! Sister Doris Glatter had surgery and it was nice to see Sister Doris at the meeting, and Brother Alfonse Urbanovsky has been in the hospital; we hope he is doing fine.

A sympathy card was sent to Brother George Hill on the loss of his wife. May she rest in peace.

Sister Engelke read the Resolution of Sympathy for Sister Thelma Gilbert who passed away April 5, 1981.

Sister Engelke also reported on the workshop held in Ennis Saturday, April 4th. Those who attended were President Daniel Nors, Vice President George Trefny, Recording Secretary Sister Bonnie Pruitt and Financial/Secretary and Treasurer Sister Darlene Engelke.

President Nors thanked everyone who came out to help clean up Saturday, April 11th. They were: Brother Dan and Sister Leona Nors, Brother Leslie and Sister Glenna Dungan, Brother Frank and Sister Libbie Parma, Brother Ray and Sister Ruby Orsag, Brother Johnnie and Sister Polly Gaidusek, Sister Irene Mueller, Brother Ira Niswanger, Brother Emil Hanus, Brother Arthur Langlotz, and Brother Tony Glatter. They all did an excellent job, it looks real nice.

Sister Parma presented the winners of the contest for the teens and juniors.

It was very nice to have visitors from North Carolina at Linden Hall Saturday night. They were: Dan and Mable Koslovsky and son, Dan Jr. (who is a member of Lodge No. 66) who are visiting Brother Jeo and Sister Albina Koslovsky. They are on a tour of Texas and on their way home and stopped by to visit a while.

It was nice to have them with us. We hope they will come, again.

The Easter Bunny came by and left a lot of goodies for the children.

They really had fun hunting for them. They had a very nice day for it. There were not too many children present, but, those who came found a lot of goodies and prizes.

The next lodge meeting will be held Sunday, May 17, at 2:30 p.m. All mothers of the lodge will be honored. There will be three drawings and food served after the meeting. We hope to see you then: Sunday, May 17, at 2:30 p.m.; youth club will meet at 2 p.m.

We then had a moment of silence for Mrs. Mary Philp and Mrs. Kristina Jakubik, deceased members.

Secretary read minutes of previous meeting and they were approved as read.

Other reports were given and approved. Our Youth Leader Betty Schoenemann gave us the following schedules for the youth: April 4-5 — Youth Leaders' Retreat - Val Verde; April 18 — Parent Banquet; April 25 — District I Youth Leaders' District Meeting; and April 26 — Spring District I Meeting.

Other business discussed included: mowing the lawn around the hall, fence repair around the hall, and discussion of past due rentals.

Remember, our next meeting is scheduled for May 6, 1981 at 8 p.m.

Academy Lodge No. 177 Sets Meeting May 13th Dear Readers: The April 4th meeting was called to order by President Jerry Tomastik. The membership recited the Pledge to the Flag.

All officers were present as well as all the committee chairmen.

Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe read the minutes from the last meeting and they were approved as read.

The committee chairmen gave their reports and everyone is doing a great job working at the lodge; without these faithful, hard-working people, there would be no lodge.

Thanks to everyone who donates their time because it is appreciated.

Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe read the correspondence. We had thank you notes from the Poncik families and a thank you note from the March of Dimes for the donations; also a thank you note from the Garland Petterson family thanking all the people of the lodge for their work and for the lodge facilities.

New members accepted into the lodge are: Anne Shepperd, Christopher Jon Santiago and Rebecca Jean Santiago. The next listed names are members who were accepted last month, they are: Robert William Stewart, Modolin Marian Straion, Kevin Lee Brown, Franklin Daniel Tschoerner, Ivan Morris Drozd, Delbert Ivy and Edward Atlee Harmond. Welcome to Lodge No. 177 and don't forget the monthly meetings held each second Wednesday of the month, at 7:30 p.m.

The Board of Trustees met and all the trustees were present, except D. Meredith. Board Chairman D. Sefcik reported that the new bathroom stalls should be arriving soon. They have been on order for some time; also the hand-dryers and the popcorn machine and stand. The board decided to have a benefit for the Toney Poncik Family.

The seed had been obtained and the land east of the lodge will be seeded; Dwayne Sefcik is taking care of this project; soon we will be seeing pretty green grass around the lodge.

Youth Leader Carol Meredith gave a good youth report. She had 15 members present and several guests. She said the youth club would be cleaning the lodge parking lot Saturday, April 11; after cleaning, they had a pizza dinner planned. (The lot looks so nice; a job well done, Carol and the •youth members). She also reported April 18th the youth members will be going to Waco ice skating. The youngsters will be selling popcorn at the Ralph Wilson Private Party.

As always, the big event: the youth club is going to Six Flags June 25th. The mother lodge is chartering a bus for our kids and members of the lodge; as always, everyone has a good time on this trip, so be glad you are a youth club member and can attend this fun activity.

The Toney Poncik Family Benefit was brought up for discussion. It was decided to let each committee chairman be in charge of work for the benefit. They will be needing food and auction prizes or money donations. We want this benefit to be a huge success. Toney put in

many, many hard hours of hard labbr when this lodge was being built, so we need all SPJST fraternalists to support this project. If any one wants to donate food, prizes for auction or work at the lodge June 7th, please call Jerry Tomastik at (817) 982-4512. The benefit has been set for June 7th. I will write more about this, but we wanted to get an early start; so please help.

Frances Love asked if she could purchase new bar stools for the ticket booth. It was decided to let Richard Pustka of Royal Seating take care of this project. Richard Pus tka also reported that the smaller tables will be delivered to the lodge in the near future.

We had a very nice thank you note from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Warden, co-pastors of the Little River United Methodist Church thanking the lodge for its facilities. The Little River Church was host for the Central Texas Annual Conference Laity Banquet. The Wardens also thank the lodge for their kindness and stated that many nice comments were made about the lodge and its members and also the Wardens thank the lodge for the involvement in the community. I must add that the members of the Little River Community Church spent a lot of time decorating the lodge and it looked beautiful. Thank you for having your banquet at Lodge No. 177.

The lodge designated its facilities to the Easter Seals Telethon and Bell County Rehabilitation Center to help improve the quality of lives of the handicapped. (Lodge No. 177 President Jerry Tomastik appeared on TV Channel 6 and presented a check to the Telethon.)

The next meeting will be held May 13 and the youth meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. and lodge meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. Please attend!

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Meeting May 3rd

Dear Members and Friends: First of all I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sister Helen Paprskar for filling in for me last month and sending in the report to the Vestnik. I really appreciate her doing the job for me.

I want to thank everyone for the flowers and cards I received after my surgery. They really mean a lot and make a person feel good.

We were honored to have District III Director Sid Pokiadnik at our April meeting. He said he is glad to see the members take part in the lodge functions, and stated that the "Workshop" was a big success. He congratulated the youth leaders for getting the youth active again, and hopes their membership will grow.

He also congratulated the youth for the good job they did on the dance they sponsored.

Youth Leader Gordon Hubenak thanked the members for their cakes and help at the dance. Bobbie Wygant from KXAS-TV, Channel 5, filmed some of the dancers in their Czech costumes. Brother Hubenak said when he is informed of the date the film will be televised he will try to spread the word so everyone can watch and see if they might see themselves on TV. The youth then went outside and hid some goodies for the adults to look for after the meeting was over. Following the meal the youth had their egg hunt.

President Albert Kubala said it was good to , see Sisters Evelyn Zacek and Albina Farek back with us at the meeting. Sophie Newton is confined to a wheelchair in Four Seasons Nursing Home and Helen Kubala was with us wearing a cast on her left hand after the misfortune of breaking her wrist. We hope she will not have any problems after the cast is removed. Frankie Chaloupka is in Huguley Hospital, and I just received a call that Richard Hubenak, Jr. of Houston passed away. We express our sympathy to his family. Brother and Sister Richard and Mary Hubenak are his Dear Members and Friends: parents.

San Antonio Lodge No. 133 Changes April Meeting Date

Birthday Club Sisters of Lodge No. 88, Houston April Meeting Sister Pearl Hanka called the regular monthly meeting to order Wednesday, April 8 at 11:15 a.m.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Sister Rosalee Kostom. They were accepted as read.

Sister Lillie Spies gave a very complete and efficient treasurer's report.

Sister Josephine Buri has been ill and was in the hospital for two weeks. Everyone was happy to have Sister Buri with us today at the meeting and she looked great.

A very devoted and active member, our Sister Sophie Hampel, has passed away and her absence will be felt by all the Birthday Club Sisters. Sister Hampel's daughter, Rose Marie Kling, expressed her appreciation to the Birthday Club Sisters for the delicious dinner that was served after her mother's funeral and that her mother, Mrs. Hampel, had often expressed her delight for being a member of the Birthday Club. Mrs. Kling sent the Birthday Club a gift of $50 in appreciation and memory of her mother.

Brother Louis Hanus, District V Director, also, expressed his appreciation to the Birthday Club Sisters for the many kind and thoughtful deeds that the Birthday Club Sisters participate in for Lodge No. 88.

The hostesses for the April luncheons were: Sister Ann Green, Bessie Dewer, Louise Chudej and Georgie Buchanan. The meals were enjoyed by all the guests. These good cooks served plenty of good food. The delicious cakes were donated by Sisters Inez Jeanes, Linda Bricker, Virginia Hale and Marie Pokluda.

Sisters Frances Olexa and Della Kadlecek were really prancing around at the luncheon with beautiful orchid corsages that Sister Anna Hoffman had given them.

Sister Anna Hoffman's son, Bill Hoffman, has become a professional at the art of raising orchids.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Clara Jecmenek, Della Kadlecek, Rita Alexander and Lillie Spies. We wish you sisters many more happy birthdays.

Let us learn from the mistakes of others — you can't live long enough to make them all yourself.

News from Lodge No. 88, Houston At our monthly lodge meeting Monday, April 13th, something new was initiated and it went over very good; everyone present enjoyed it.

The covered-dish supper, served at 6:16 p.m., was simply great and it was unanimously agreed to be a success and should be practiced every month before the meeting.

Sister President Mildred Holeman convened the meeting, as usual, at 7:30 p.m. After the regular formalities, she introduced Sergeant Roy Henley from our Houston Police Force who spoke to us for 40 minutes on Crime Prevention fok the homeowners and showed narrated pictures of ransacked homes and how to protect them. The whole program was informative and wellreceived. Remember, we will have our covered-dish supper, again, next monthly meeting Monday, May 11th.

The swimming pool will officially open Sunday, May 3rd for the summer for the youngsters to enjoy the hot weather. The annual Cleanup Day will be held Saturday, April 25th; (if the weather is bad) then, the following Sunday, May 3rd.

Our Community Affair Co-ordinator is Mary Kosut; to her we report all our charity work at hospitals and visitations to sick people and helping them in some way. Any member doing this reports to Mary and, in turn, she gives the information to our Financial Secretary Josephine Pflughaupt in the office.

Tom and Clara Jecmenek are happily married for 56 years; both are full of life and pictures of health and it is nice to be with them. Happy Anniversary!

On the sick list we have quite a few members, again: Sister Lillian Kruse, a Birthday Club sister, Mary Quiter on the Auditing Committee sorry to have you under the weather), Gladys Drawe and Annie Flukinger are both home from the hospital and Beverly Buefort under the weather for quite a few weeks; Billy, her son takes good care of her.

Both used to come to all activities but, lately, we missed you both very much. Mary Stayton, now home from the hospital going on three weeks, is still not strong enough to venture out. Take care, we miss you!

At the last Birthday Club luncheon, Sister Anna Hoffman brought two gorgeous purple orchids, she gave one to Della Kadlecek for her birthday and the other one to me; why, I don't know, both orchids were a gift from Anna's son, Billy who raises these beautiful flowers at home; he must have a green thumb to raise such beauties; in other words, he specializes in orchids. Thank you very much; I enjoyed mine.

to Mark'''. Wheeler Friday, April 10, 1981 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church at 7:30 p.m.; with 500 guests to witness the lovely couple's vows to each other by Rev. R. G. Friedrichs. The beautiful bride, Cindy, in a beautiful white bridal gown, came down the aisle on the arm of her father who led her to the waiting groom at the altar with his best man, Kenneth Smith and the groomsmen, Charles Cawthon, Steve Shaw, Gary Wehring and Mark Howe. The handsome groom was all in white and all the male attendants were in brown tuxedos and yellow ruffled shirts' matching the lovely young ladies yellow gowns. They wore becoming picture hats and mixed flower nosegays. These lovely ladies preceded the bride down the aisle. They were the two sisters of the bride, Linda and Debbie, both maids of honor.

Bridesmaids were Debra Shaw, Jode Bennett, Debbie Wear and Vicky Hegwood. Junior bridesmaid was Dona Eckenhorst and her escort was Brad Eckenhorst. Flower girl was Elizabeth Chambers and ringbearer was Carl Pflughaupt; serving as ushers were Tom Brandon, Bob Engelbert, Mark Mize and Steve Weyand.

The bride's mother wore a pleated coral chiffon gown. The groom's mother wore a blue-embroidered organza gown. Organist Lillian Portel, on the organ, accompanied Helen Hegwood in several selections, including the Lord's Prayer.

The elaborate wedding reception was held at Lodge No. 88 in the Chandelier Ballroom, beautifully decorated. On each side of the wine fountain were: on the left, the bride's cake (Lady Windsor) lavishly decorated and, on the right, the groom's cake in the shape of a double wedding ring.

The wedding march was led by Ruth and Donn Batula to the music of the Tannenberger Orchestra.

Benediction by the bride's father, Willie Wehring was followed by a full course buffet dinner. Refreshments were served all through the evening to the jolly guests and dancing to their hearts content.

Faye Y'Barbo was the guest book attendant.

With sorrow, we parted with Brother Monor Burton Rister, a member of many years; he passed away April 9, 1981, at the age of 74 years with a heart attack. Before Burton and his wife, Floryne moved to Montgomery, Texas, they always supported all activities at the lodge and we missed them. Funeral services were held at the Heights Funeral Chapel Saturday, April 11, 1981 at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. M. A. Marshal officiating. Interment was in Hollywood Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Floryne Rister; one son, Bill Rister; two granddaughters; one grandson; and two brothers; H. F. Rister and Walter Rister, all of Houston, Texas. We extend our sincere sympathy to the surviving family.

Cottonwood Lodge No. 6 Maintains A Busy Schedule Cottonwood Lodge No. 6 held its meeting Sunday, April 5th.

President Dobecka called the meet-

ing to order by having Darrell Uptmor and Keith Hykel recite the Pledge to the Flag and the SPJST Pledge.

Brother Hykel reported 36 members and three visitors were present. They were Francis Chase, Kenneth Brown and Boogie Hanzlicek.

We also want to thank Brother Rudy and Sister Maxine Sefcik for coming and visiting with us at the Easter program and supper. They are always welcome.

Sister Barbara Hykel was. called on to read the minutes of the previous meeting. Correspondence was also read from the American Sokol Association Slet, which will be held in Fort Worth. It was voted on, by the membership, to put an ad in the Slet brochure.

Treasurer Georgia Wachsmann and Financial Secretary George Straten presented their reports.

They were all in order.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported that she had attended youth leaders' training in Ennis. The youth presented their Easter program at the Rest Home and held a bake sale April 17th. They will go to the Rest Home May 13th. The club will have a crazy hat contest and Mother's Day card contest in May. They are collecting Campbell labels, aluminum cans and cigarette packages. A clothes drive and Stanley Party are also planned. She recognized the youth who will represent our lodge at District III YAD. They are: King Terry Hykel, Queen Karen Hykel, Duke Kevin Dobecka and Duchess Lanette Hykel. The birthday for the month was Keith Hykel. Shirley Dobecka brought the cake.

Sister Lydia Dobecka reported on the Card Committee. Cards were sent for birthdays, anniversaries and get-well wishes.

On the trustees' report, Chairman George Straten, reported that a committee of Brother George and Sister Josie Mae' Straten had been selected to be in charge of the tickets for our lodge picnic which will be held Sunday, July 19th.

Other plans pertaining to the picnic also were discussed. Work days were set up to work on the hall improvements. Secretary-treasurer of the Board of Trustees, Robert Dobecka, gave the financial report.

It was also voted on to serve fried chicken for the picnic.

In behalf of the West Fraternal Auditorium, Brother Cyrill Svrcek thanked the lodge for donating towards their anniversary. We also want to thank Brother and Sister Cyrill Svrcek for donating a stuffed Easter Bunny and Brother and Sister Alvin Schuetz for donating a bottle of spirits toward the expense of the Easter meal.

President Dobecka thanked all the cooks who prepared the meal and all who attended the Easter program, hunt and supper.

The Easter Bunny was won by Marietta Lander and the spirits by Nick Rizo.

Brother and Sister Ray Perez also gave a surprise gift of 2 baby bunnies; they were won by Craig Hromadka.

President Dobecka and Financial Secretary George Straten and their wives attended officers' training workshops at Lodge No. 25, Ennis.

The meeting was very informative and the meal was delicious.

The $10 progressive door prize was won by Robert Dobecka. The other $10 progressive door prize was Eddie Ray Hrabal and the $3 progressive door prize was Cyrill B. Svrcek; neither was present. Robert Dobecka, Jr. won the $2 door prize.

_ Minutes of the District II Spring Meeting -SPJST

The District II Spring Meeting was held March 15, 1981 at Lodge No. 47 Seaton. The meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. by District II President D. I. Bohac.

President Alfred Klusacek of Lodge No. 47 gave everyone a warm welcome to Seaton Star Hall.

A moment of silence was observed for the deceased members.

Roll call of officers showed all present except First Vice-President Ronnie Reiger. Roll call of lodges was next with 181 members present.

Secretary Mary Dubec read the minutes of the last meeting. The minutes were approved with no changes.

Treasurer Vera Roepke reported that the youth fund had a balance of $638.27 and the general fund's balance was $239.92.

District II Youth Counselor Frank Klinkovsky gave the next report. He thanked all of the youth leaders for their support. He also announced plans for camp and YAD in the future.

Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas announced plans for the workshops. He alsO stated that our 1980 assets were 29 million and liabilities 22 million. He expressed his pleasure at the SPJST's surplus funds.

District II Director Henry Vitek introduced the insurance representatives. He said our district wrote more applications than any other district.

Legal Advisor Reuben Lesikar gave a short report. He expressed delight at the district's bank balance.

Rest Homes Director Howard Lesikar stated that the two S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes were doing well. He advised everyone that applications to enter the rest home must be put in early.

Lodge No. 47 President Klusacek announced that a meal would be served at 2:00 p.m.

The only correspondence was a letter from Editor Rudy Sefcik expressing his regrets at not being able to attend the meeting.

Frankie Pajestka reported that the books audited were in good condition.

Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hanus were asked to stand during the recognition of 50 year members.

Dear Members and Friends, The April 9th meeting was called to order at 8 p.m. by President Van Fowler. Brother Garry Mizell led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Brother Fowler called for a moment of silence for a departed member, Sister Marie Hrabina, mother of a past-lodge president, Johnny Hrabina. Lodge No. 25 expresses its deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.

Cards were sent to recent members on the sick list: Marie Strunc, Glenn Kudrna, Evelyn Mach and Rita Holland.

Congratulations to Brother Scooter, Sister Rita and Little Brother Brian Holland on the arrival of April Janette, born March 20.

Happy grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie I. Krajca and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth B. Holland. April's parents are both members of Lodge No. 25 and Grandmother Krajca is our Recording Secretary. Mother Rita is Financial Secretary.

The March meeting minutes were read by Sister Margaret Krajca and approved as read. The executive meeting minutes were also approved as read.

Sister Krajca read a letter from the American Sokol Organization inviting members to the Slet in June.

A motion was made and approved to take out an ad.

The following new members were welcomed — Rebecca Ann Woods, Kevin Rene Gallagher and Mary Frances Woods. Members adding on insurance were Ronald W. Haskovec, Jeff Watson and Russell Wayne Pecot.

Sister Linda Trojacek, youth leader, reported the Youth Club recently held its Easter Party.

The Polka Festival Float Committee reported good progress on the preparation of the float.

After all business was discussed, premium refund checks were distributed by Sister Krajca and the meeting was adjourned. Thirty-five members registered.

The lodge kitchen has been buzzing with activity preparing those delicious kolache and strudels that everyone loves so much. Many, many dozens have been made so forget your diets and . enjoy them.

The weekend of May 2 and 3, the welcome mat will out for all Polka Festival visitors. The food will be delicious and, as usual, the music will be great.

At 7 p.m. April 11th, a Polka Festival Workers' Party was held.

Everyone enjoyed the delicious food catered by Liska's and the good music of The Country Boys Band.

The Festival Workers deserve this party because they work very hard during these two days each year to make everyone welcome and happy.

Ennis will be honored to have Brother R. J. Sefcik, editor of the Vestnik, as Grand Marshal of the Polka Festival Parade! Hope to see you, at Lodge No. 25, Brother Sefcik!

Lodge No. 81 Announces Night Meetings for Three Months Needville

Dear Members and Friends: President Charlie Matcek called the meeting of Lodge No. 81 to order Sunday, April 12, at 2 p.m.

Brother August Teykl led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call was answered by all the officers.

President Charlie Matcek thanked everyone who helped in any way with the District V meeting which we hosted March 8th.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting and reports from the financial secretary and treasurer were given. These were all accepted as given.

A card of thanks from the Anna Sralla family was read.

LeeRoy Kamas was reported on the sick list. We hope you are feeling a lot better by now, LeeRoy. The schedule of activities for the next month was reported by our Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel who also gave the financial report and this report also was accepted as given.

There was some discussion about our meeting dates. It was decided to have night meetings for the time being during May, June and July.

Our next meeting will be held May 12, at 7:30 p.m.

The president thanked Brother Herbert Nowotny for tending to the improved entrance to our grounds at the hall. More crocks were added, therefore, making the entrance safer. Authority also was given to Brother Nowotny to have some reflectors placed at the entrance to the drive in.

We have two additional policies, namely, Phillip Valka and Bonnie Valka.

Good reports were given by the officers who attended the workshop at Hallettsville.

A motion was made and seconded to build an enclosure for garbage which is collected after each activity at the hall. This is to be built with hurricane fence at a convenient spot for the garbage pick up truck.

No. 154 Schedules May 10th Meeting; 5 p.m.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by President Jerry Milan.

All officers were present, except our vice president, Brother Don Steinman who was en-route home, with Sister Rose Steinman, from Lebanon, Ohio.

Brother Milan welcomed our guest, Brother Sid Pokladnik, District III Director. He looked great and he always adds a special touch to any occasion.

All reports were approved as read.

New members accepted were: Aaron Krause, Sarah Price and transferee Richard Bounds.

There was a discussion on the extended date for ads for the Sokol Slet Program Book until May 1st.

Brother Darrell Williams thanked our members for our ad.

Brother Williams also reported Doris Hawrylak suffered a heart attack while attending a rodeo; she is the wife of Brother Ray Hawrylak, she is, at this time, still in the Intensive Care Unit at Harris Hospital. We wish her a speedy recovery; also to Josh Milan who was rushed to the hospital after a bad cut on his hand that required surgery and skin graft, and to Sisters Helen Kubala who broke her wrist and Lillie McMillen who had eye surgery.

The youth club will hold their meeting preceding the picnic.

Several members were in a practice session for the slet at meeting time.

Br other Pokladnik did the drawing for the door prize, and Sister Mary Renfro was our recipient.

Brother Joe Milan won the special Lodge No. 92 cake during a cakewalk during the Math Sladky Dance and Sister Carrie put it in the freezer and kept it for our meeting and for the Sister who baked the beautiful cake, we want you to know it was delicious. Refreshments were enjoyed by all.

Make note, of our next meeting on May 10, will be at 5 p.m. instead of 3 p.m., due to the Fort Worth Sokol Unit Exhibition at 2 p.m. That is on Mother's Day and we hope all you dear mothers, have a wonderful day.

Seaton Lodge 47 Sets Annual Picnic Date Dear Members and Friends, The monthly meeting of Lodge 47 was held Sunday, April 5 at 2 p.m. with our President Alfred Klusacek presiding.

Flagbearers David Pechal and Gene Skrabanek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence followed in respect for our deceased brother, Edwin C. Mikeska who passed away March 9. May he rest in Eternal Peace.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the minutes of the last meeting.

They were approved as read. She also read the roll call of officers and sales representatives and all correspondence which included an invitation from the Taylor Lodge to the May Fete, May 3 and an invitation from the Temple Centennial Committee to enter a float in honor of their 100-year Celebration Parade to be held in June; also a thank you note from the Choral Group for the float money. The float is progressing very nicely. Hope many of you will try to come to the Rogers Homecoming Saturday, April 25 at 10 a.m.

(This is, the time of the Parade). For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about -- this is also Rogers' 100th Birthday. Many of us at the Seaton Lodge (including myself) are Rogers ex-students and we are all looking forward to this historical occasion.

All officers and chairpersons gave satisfactory reports. Woodrow Marek read the ticket chairman's report in the absence of Eugene Hejl. Brother Marek also read the audit report.

Our new storage building will soon be under construction. Frank and Ruth Janacek donated a check for $235 which will buy a hot water heater for our new building.

Our visitors were: Fred and Wilma Frerichs, Leola Kruse, Ann

Balusek, Mary Fojtasek and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson, Jr. from Cape Cod, Mass. We welcome all visitors and are always happy to see new faces among us.

Reported on our sick list were: Mrs. John Hutka, L. J. Motl, Janet Odstrcil, Paula Bailey and Mrs. Otto (Matilda) Hanus. Mrs. Hanus is a member of our Choral Group and both Otto and Matilda are frequent visitors at our lodge. Our thoughts and prayers are for each and everyone who is ill. We wish you all a speedy recovery.

The Investigating Committee approved and the members accepted these new members: Christopher Allen Mihatsch, Ruth A. Janacek, Madeline Thompson, Robert H. Thompson III, William Andrew Craft, Kimberly Diane Craft, Beverly Gayle Meyer, Bertha T. Fuessal and Patricia Janet Vrazel.

Transferred to our lodge was Thelma Bartosh from Granger.

The minutes of the last board meeting were read by Dolores Skrabanek for Alfred L. Klusacek, secretary of the board. The next Board meeting is April 21 at 7 p.m.

Shirley Patterson, youth leader, gave her report. She thanked each and everyone who helped in any way at the Chili Supper and game night that was held in March. It was a huge success and, financially, the Youth Club is very well off at this time. She also reported that Vickie Tepera and Billie Joe Billeck will represent Lodge 47 at the Taylor May Fete. The membership voted for a monetary gift to the two representatives to help defray their expenses. The Youth Club will have the fish pond and ball throwing booths at our picnic.

Other chairpersons who have volunteered so far for our annual picnic, which will be held Sunday, July 26, are: Barbecue Chairman — Frank Maruna; Kitchen -- Evelyn Heese and Dorothy Pechal; Teddy Bears — Floyd Stuteville; Youth Club -- Fish pond and ball throwing; Social Games — Frankie and Irma Klinkovsky, Ruth Kohutek, Pat and Shirley Patterson; Outside Beer and Soda Water Tickets -- Charlie Marek; Inside — Butch and Georgie Sodek and Sweets — Georgie Sodek, Lillian Kosarek, Llorraine Maas, Mrs. Louis Marek, and Dorothy Morris. We still need chairpersons for tickets, auction and parking cars.

Alfred Klusacek and Calvin Skrabanek are Picnic Chairmen.

Anyone who would like to help in any way at the picnic, please let any of these chairpersons know. There is always plenty to do and volunteers certainly help to get the job done!

Our next meeting will be Monday, May 4 at 8 p.m. At this meeting our Youth Club High School graduates will be honored with a covered dish supper starting at 7 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring enough food for their own family plus a little more.

Needless to say, we all eat more at covered dish suppers — after all, we have to taste a little of everything brought!

District VI Spring Meeting March 29, 1981 The spring meeting of District VI SPJST was held in Hillje on March 29, 1981 with Lodge No. 50 El Campo and Lodge No. 40 Hillje as hosts.

The meeting was called to order by President Edwin Smajstrla at 1:30 p.m.

Vickie Dorotik, district flag bearer, led everyone in the Pledge to the Flag.

Welcomes were extended by host lodge presidents Rita Vanek of El Campo and Jerry Polasek of Hillje.

Rita Vanek asked that the meeting be dedicated to three members of Lodge No. 50 who were ill.

First Vice President Eddie Vrana responded to the welcomes.

There was a moment of silence in tribute to our deceased members.

Second Vice President Frank Zabransky introduced the following guests: Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Reuben Lesikar and his wife Jeannette, Vestnik Editor Rudy Sefcik and his wife Maxine and District Six Director Matt Vanek and his wife.

In the roll call of officers only one officer was absent—Kathy Ahlstrom, assistant youth counselor. Jerome Hlavaty, Insurance Committee, did not respond to the permanent committee roll call. Twelve lodges responded to the roll call of lodges.

The reading of the 50-year member names followed. There was no correspondence and, the minutes were read and approved as read.

The following were nominated for Audit Committee: Mary Mrnustik nominated Rita Vanek, Rita Vanek nominated Pauline Kalina and Eddie Vrana nominated Adolph Motal.

District Six Treasurer Anton Kelner gave the following report. On October 1, 1980 there was a balance of $1,609.82 with interest of $62.01 making a total of $1,671.83. The expenses were $255.46 leaving a balance on March 1, 1981 of $1,416.27. $2,000.00 is also in savings.

In the General Expense Fund there. was a balance of $195.74, an income of $150.00 making a total income of $345.54. Expenses were $125.00 leaving a balance of $220.54.

District Director Matt Vanek followed with his report. He asked that everyone help out the youth by participating in their ticket sales and he complimented Lodge No. 40, Hillje on their payment of their loan. Some lodges were not present at the recent Officers' Workshop and Director Vanek said that he felt all lodges should have attended. Rate of interest for loans is not 11% but there are many people who ask for loans that are not members. Several sales representative meetings would be held April 6th in Hillje, April 7th in Hallettsville and April 8th in Victoria.

Several trips were being offered as prizes in the sales contest. Director

Vanek congratulated the sales representatives for meeting their quota in 1980 by selling insurance amounting to $1,371,000. The sales representatives' banquet would be held April 12th in Hallettsville. The quota for 1981 was again $1,050,000. The museum at the Supreme Lodge was finished and the IBM system would be installed next week and possibly completed by September. Assets total around $29 million. There are 56,000 certificates in force for $147 million worth of insurance. $163,000 had been refunded to the lodges and $320,000 to the members plus about $5,000 for postage.

Janet Marek, District VI Youth Counselor, gave her report. She thanked Elsie Brdecka for her help and said that all the camp equipment was now at her home. There'are only four lodges with active youth clubs: El Campo, Taiton, Victoria and Hallettsville. Janet Marek said she and Assistant Youth • Counselor Kathy Ahlstrom would be attending a workshop at Camp Val Verde. May 2nd she would be at a district leaders' meeting with Jann Thomas, State Youth Director. Camp dates were June 29th to July 2nd at Bastrop.

Lodge 50, El Campo would host the DYAD at St. Philip's School on July 19th. She concluded by saying that interest in youth clubs was dropping and that she was still asking for everyone's support.

Rest Homes Director Erwin Holy brought greetings from the Rest Homes Board of Directors. He said they had a meeting recently and that they had decided to pay $25,000 in addition to their initial payment on their note with the Supreme Lodge.

There was now $177,000 indebtedness. They had considered an additional wing at Needville and asked the President and Treasurer to look into this. The rest homes had a good year financially, with full homes and a waiting list. Half the guests were private pay and the other half welfare members. Improvements were constantly being made. $1,175,000 was taken in by both homes but the labor bill alone was $693,000. The seventy-two bed Taylor home had a grocery bill of $55,000 and the fiftyeight bed Needville home had a grocery bill of $54,000. It now costs $26.06 per day to stay at the rest home.

Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Reuben LesilEar gave the Supreme Lodge report. He congratulated the district officers for their good reports.

He stated that the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes offer some of the best care in the state or nation. They are a nonprofit organization and must accept everyone that applies. Many guests are non-SPJST members but it must be this way. 56,000 members sponsor the rest homes but they are a separate unit from the SPJST. Attorney Lesikar said that since the recent convention, the duties of the district director have increased. He brought greetings from the Supreme Lodge and stated that Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska was at Robstown for the District VII meeting. He also said "strength is in numbers" so everyone should help the sales representatives to sign up members. Attorney Lesikar said that in 1980 he handled three lawsuits, four fore-closures, two bankruptcies, the closing of real estate loans for $2,163,000 and rendered written reports to local lodges and the Supreme Lodge. $22,211,128 is currently invested in real estate loans

From the Youth Leaders EL CAMPO YOUTH LEADER INVITES MEMBERS TO MAY 5TH MEETING Dear Readers: El Campo Lodge No. 50 Youth Club met April 7, 1981 at the American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary.

The meeting was opened by Vice President Kim Vanek. Secretary Joseph Bartos read the minutes.

We discussed old and new business and District VI meeting which our club attended.

We had one youth visitor, Lisa Smajstrla and the adult member, Mrs. Mary Smajstrla.

Mothers present at the meeting were: Mrs. Anna Bartos, Mrs. Carol Dillon, Mrs. Janet Holub, Mrs. Bernice Rek, Mrs. Rita Vanek and Mrs. Vlasta Bartos.

We made craft for Easter. The youth will take them to the Garden Villa Nursing Home to be distributed by the youth members.

Our next meeting will be held May 5, 1981 at the American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary, at 7:30 p.m.

HOUSTON LODGE NO. 88 YOUNGSTERS ARE

ENCOURAGED TO JOIN YC Lodge No. 88 Youth Club has many things going for it. We have fine young people, good leaders, social activities, parties, outings, projects and cake sales; so if you are a member of Lodge No. 88 and are between the ages of 6 and 16, I encourage you to come and visit us at one of our monthly meetings.

Our next meeting will be held at 3 p.m. May 17th. Join us now and you will start at the beginning of our youth year (June 1st) and will be eligible for next year's camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD). All visitors and parents are welcome.

Dear Readers and Members: The youth club held their meeting Friday night, April 3rd, with a good attendance. We also had some visitors. We hope you come back, again.

Sunday, April 5th, the youth club had their Easter program after the mother lodge meeting. Each participant was real good. Thank you.

After the program the group had their Easter egg hunt, they were grouped into age 0-6 and 7-12; each had 3 prize eggs in their hunt. They also had an Easter card contest, followed by a delicious fried chicken supper. It sure was good and I want to thank the judges, those who helped the rabbit, and all those who donated eggs, door prizes and helped in any way, plus donating two live rabbits by Brother and Sister Ray Perez. Thank you very much!

Our youth club had an Easter program at the Rest Home April 8th, the youngster also made Easter baskets for the residents at the home, which they enjoyed very much.

April 17th our club planned a bake sale at the Leroy Bank.

Our Lodge No. 6 Royalty consists of: King Terry Hykel, Queen Karen Hykel, Duke Kevin Dobecka and Duchess Lanette Hykel. We wish all of you a lot of good luck.

During our May 3rd meeting, we will have a short Mother's Day program and a crazy hat contest, plus a Mother's Day card contest.

March 21st, I went to the District HI Youth Leaders' Training at Lodge No. 25 in Ennis. It was a nice meeting and I was glad to meet our new State Youth Director Jann Thomas.

The Czech alphabet possesses the ability of rendering the quantity of vowels by the use of the Barka, and the palatal sound of the three consonants, d', t', g.
