District III Recognizes Sales Representatives

District III r Sid Pokiadnik (right) is presenting a special gilt to Brother Emil Petr of Lodge No. 84 for selling $454,000 of insurance in 1980, which entitled him to be the top productive salesman within the district. Brother Sid Pokiadnik, District III Director, along with his spouse, Sister Justine, served as hosts to a large group of sales representatives whoa were recognized for their faithful services at a banquet held March 15 at Dallas Lodge No. 84.

Approximately seventy persons traveling from Arlington, Burleson, Dallas, Elk, Ennis, Fort Worth, Longview, Waco and West lodges were complimented by the SPJST for reaching their insurance sales quota in 1980; the total in insurance sold was $3,196,000.

After a delicious meal, served by the B&L Catering Service, Brother Pokladnik recognized the ladies, Sister Bessie Petr and Sister Lillian Hamusek for preparing the food and then thanked the sales representatives with their spouses for being present.

Afterwards Brother F'okladnik turned the program over to SL Vice President Bernie Gebala, who introduced the various committee chair-

men elected at the last convention; he praised all the SRs for their fine work and asked for their continued support of our two State Field Managers: Brothers Silas Smith and Gene McBride.

Brother Gebala read each of the SRs' names, while Brother Pokladnik gave each one a gift from the Society; monetary gifts were also given to the most productive representatives for insurance written last year.

The top sales representative's award was then presented to Brother Emil Petr of Lodge No. 84,

by Brother Sid Pokiadnik. Brother Petr received a beautiful set of crystal/silver candleholders for writing $454,000 in 1980.

We thoroughly enjoyed being at the banquet and congratulated District III for their surge in insurance sales. Good luck to all the SRs in District III and may 1981 prove to be just as rewarding, if not more, as the year before!

NEWSBRIEFS The VIIIth annual conference of Czech Students and Teachers is scheduled to be held at SPJST Hall No. 29 east of Taylor on Saturday, April 25th. This conference has been, and will again be, sponsored by the Czech Club at the University of Texas, according to George Petrek, Czech Club president. In addition to students of Czech and teachers of that language, the general public is invited, especially those interested in promoting and preserving Czech language instruction at various levels throughout the state. Additional information for the program on the 25th will be forthcoming soon.

Harnpel, a very devoted and active member, departed Wednesday, March 24, 1981 in the Heights Hospital after two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit. Rosary was held at 7 p.m. Thursday and funeral services at 10 a.m. Friday at All Saint's Catholic Church and interment was Ln Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

Rosenberg Lodge No. 175 Sets Meeting Date, May 26 Dear Members: The quarterly meeting of Lodge No 175 was held March 24, 1981 at 7:30 p.m. at Civic Center in Rosenberg.

After the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, the following officers for 1981 were installed by Louis Harms, District V director from Houston. The officers are President Frank Jozic, Vice President Milton Vyvial, Secretary James Vyvial, Financial Secretary/Treasurer Helen Bryson.

President Jozic then conducted the remainder of the business meeting. The minutes and treasurer's report were read and approved.

Brother Howard Schultz was not present to accept the door prize, so next month it will be $25.00. Albert Schroeder won the two courtesy tickets.

Dallas Lodge No. 84 Announces Future Activities Dear Members: Members of Lodge No. 84 are happy that the District III meeting is being held here at 2625 Floyd Street. Please make an effort to attend on April 26. (Refer to schedule elsewhere).

The menu for the dinner on that day is ham, potato salad, baked beans, slaw, bread, pastry, coffee or tea. Our great pastry cooks from Lodge No. 84 are asked to bring the pastry. The plates for adults will be $3 and $1.50 for children.

April 18, the Czech Harvesters entertain for your dancing pleasure and April 20th is our lodge meeting.

Buckholts, Lodge No. 15 Next Meeting April 8 President Ann Balusek opened our meeting with - the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved with one correction.

The second reading of the letter from the Supreme Lodge concerning unrelated activities was held.

The treasurer's report was approved as read and also all committee reports were accepted and approved as read.

Two new members were accepted into the lodge and 'Happy Birthday' was sung to Warren Hillman. The meeting adjourned and cold cuts and birthday cake were served to all members and guests present. Our next meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 8.

Various Happenings Within the Corpus Christi Area

By JOHN STASA This letter is not an official report on the Czech Heritage Society of Texas quarterly meeting/program, it is only from my notes and you may be hearing more about these events from Secretary Helen Pavelka.

President J. B. Sefcik called the annual meeting to order at 2:35 p.m.

Sunday, February 22, 1981 and he also led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll call was answered by all the officers. Reports of the officers and committees were approved with applause.

After a few moments, President J. B. Sefcik presented certificates (awards) to the members. Eddie Knapek accepted the certificate for his dear wife, Christine, in her absence; she was a patient in the Spohn Hospital, with a broken right leg from February 11 to March 7.

The names of the persons who received the certificates were: Christine Knapek, Norma Beringham, Albin Janosek and John Stasa.

(Yours truly presented a get-well card for Christine Knapek which had 87 signatures and it didn't reach everyone in the audience.)

Officers serving for the next year are: Albert Brandesky, president; Alvin Prochazka, vice president; Helen Pavelka, secretary; Edwin Kosarek, treasurer. (The names of the Board of Trustees are on the picture).

The entire membership was asked to assist Chairman Alvin Prochazka in signing in new members. There are many Czech-Moravians and.

Slovaks who do not even know of our Society, so please try contacting them. It will be appreciated.

The Czech Dancers, under the directorship of Charlotte Knezek, are becoming well-organized and we had eight dancers for our entertainment.

Our Czech Heritage singing group is now holding practice sessions every Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m., under the directorship of Al Prochazka and Richard Urbis.

The Czech Language Class has also gotten underway with Paul Smid as teacher and director; these also are held each Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. All the above mentioned activities are being taught at St. Cyril and Methodius classrooms.

Father Higgins, we are very grateful. Thank you very much for the use of the classrooms.

For some time there was a sale on tickets for a quilt and other prizes.

The lucky winner of the quilt was Mrs. Helen Lehnert of Woodsboro, Texas. This wonderful and historic quilt had names of our members and was planned and made in the home of our prominent members, Mr. Eddie and Mrs. Christine Knapek.

The membership at the present time is 450. We, the Czech Heritage Society, is in its first year as a chartered organization which is almost completed and much has been set in motion that will allow our Society to take much surer and larger steps into its future.

At 4:40 p.m. the membership shared a covered-dish supper. The dance began at 6 p.m. with Wence Shimek playing. I have enjoyed the meeting, the Czech songs and dancers.

Discussion was then about attending the National Sokol Slet June 24-28, 1981 at Fort Worth, Texas.

There were 4 new members admitted: two men and two women of middle age.

The weather was low temperature of 50 degrees and rainy days.

We received a total of 1 1/4 inch of rain March 10 and 11. The farmers are busy planting sorghum and cotton. There is enough moisture for the next 30 days. Springtime is here, (earlier than in many other years).

THE LANDMARK Dear Brother Editor: Recently I received a newspaper clipping out of the Tribune-Progress, dated Thursday, February 12, 1981.

When Majek's Orchestra played for the dance at the SPJST Hall in Round Rock, Texas, Brother Ray Woytek gave this to Band Leader Leo Majek, Sr. to have the same delivered to me. Modern Gin in Holland, Texas was owned by John Stasa and family from 1934 to 1937. It was sold to Henry Melcher from Fayette County, Texas in 1937. Then it was abandoned 2 Apri11975.

In the year 1935 we had a buyer for this improved property; we declined to sell it. In 1937 there came another buyer; the sale was made. We had more than two hundred customers. Mr. Henry Melcher from Fayette County was the next owner.

In 1937 there was a cotton gin for sale. Mrs. Anna Kamenicky, a widow at Pettibone Community, in Milam County, offered her gin for sale. We bought it and also the residence she had built some 10 years before. I am sincerely thankful to all who patronized our business; it was appreciated very much.

The Cotton Production Control put many ginners and cotton farmers out of their occupations.

When my daughter Lillie, son-inlaw John Huber and I went to Temple to visit my brother-in-law, Frank Poboril, we stopped at Holland and got the picture of the abandoned cotton gin. It is sad to see these small towns in this present condition Sister Venie Kucera, member of SPJST since 1922 and also member from 1922 in Dallas who moved with her dear husband, Jim and son James and became a widow April 1, 1969, is in a new home these days.

Burleson Lodge No. 180 Announces April 12 Meeting Acting President (Secretary) Mike Hejl opened our March meeting because President Dennis Barabas was ill and we wish him a speedy recovery and Vice President Jess Taylor was out of town.

Sister Sandra Barabas was appointed secretary for the meeting.

Flagbearer Joe Russell led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for deceased members.

The minutes will be read at our next meeting from the March meeting because Secretary Hejl was short on time to properly prepare the minutes when he was asked to be acting president and he did a really good job.

Our financial secretary gave her report for the last three months because she was absent for the last two meetings due to flu and then surgery. It sure was good to have her back.

Trustees Chairman Bill Slavik gave his report on the trustee meeting. The trustees had recommended that the lodge buy eleven tables and one-hundred chairs.

A motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously to purchase them.

Then there was a lengthy discussion on what to do with the amusement fixtures, juke box and cigarette machine because that space is needed to put the extra tables and chairs for an overflow crowd as quite often happens.

A motion was made, seconded and passed to remove the amusement fixtures, pool tables, and leave the juke box and cigarette machine at the discretion of the trustees.

Acting President Hejl said our dance floor needed refinishing due to sand being brought in from the gravel parking lot, especially in damp weather. If the parking lot was paved there wouldn't be that problem and hopefully, that will happen in the not too distant future.

In the hospital this past month, was Sister Joyce Russell, entertainment chairman, and Sister Mary Ann Krivanek who was our former reporter. They are both doing fine.

We want to express our sympathy to the family of Wayne Houston — "Burleson Star," publisher. He has been very helpful in advertising for our lodge.

It was real nice to have Brother and Sister Frank and Josephine Prochaska at our meeting.

Let's all take more interest in our lodge meetings, and attend regularly when possible.

Anyone who has items for our garage sale, and would like to have them picked up, please call one of the chairmen prior to the date of the sale. Pickup vehicles are available for large merchandise. The sale will be held at the home of Brother Jerry and Sister Dorothy Vytopil's home located on the corner of East 29th Street and Garden Lane, one block north of the Sky Way Twin Drive-In Theater. We will be preparing for the sale Friday evening, April 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. Anyone wishing to drop off items during this time may do so. Choral Club, SPJST Lodge No. 47 Seaton

Dear Members and Readers, With April 10 approaching, preparation for that evening's program took place at our last bi-monthly practice/meeting, March 24. Approximately 25 singers were present.

The program — the Buckholts Senior Citizens Benefit — on that date will include performers from Buckholts, Cameron, Rogers and Seaton. Some will compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons. It promises to be an entertaining evening as well as monetarily beneficial.

The Seaton Brass Band will play prelude music beginning at 7 o'clock.

Traditional Czech brass band style waltzes and polkas will be rendered.

Young people interested in music — and here, primarily Czech music — make up the SBB. Several are furthering their music interest in various Central Texas colleges and are planning their life work in that field. Nick Morris is the band director. It speaks well of them to make time for others.

Colors will be posted by one of the services before the finale which will include marches, deep South melodies and "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Some of the other per-formers will participate in the conclusion.

In charge of arranging the evening is Mrs. Lula Criswell of Buckholts who was last year's chairman also. She and the Buckholts community invite all of you to attend.

Singers, please: let's wear our club attire, blue/white and suits with CC ties. Mrs. Criswell has kindly scheduled us for about 8:30.

Next practice for the choral group is April 14. We hope to see you then, to sing with you. Dates will be set, too, for finishing our float.

CESAT Meeting April 25

Annual

The annual CESAT meeting will be held at the SPJST Hall in Taylor (Lodge No. 29) April 25, 1981, beginning at 10:00 a.m.; as you may know, the Eighth Annual Conference of Czech students and Teachers will also meet at the

Taylor lodge on that date. George Petrek is still unsure about their schedule, but estimates that their program will begin at approximately 4:00 p.m. Please encourage all your interested friends to attend both events and become members of CESAT' CESAT navazuje na tradici klubu Cechie jak zachovani tak i v propagaci ceskeho jazyka, a kultury v Texasu. This year's meeting promises to be an especially interesting one. Our new brochures are ready for distribution, and we are looking for new members who share our goals.

By JOHN STASA Dear Readers and Editor: I have some more news today; it may interest someone. For a few weeks we had no letters in the Vestnik; I just have been waiting that some members, officers or reports would come up with some writing in the Vestnik. (I also have been asked to write: that they are

missing my letters in Czech and English.)

It is my sincere wish to see more letters (reports) from Corpus Christi, Texas.

School Program I had the honor and pleasure to take a part in the Baker Junior High School program March 19, 1981. One of the Baker Junior students, Richard Brandesky, (12-year-old) was in the program sponsored by the Czech Heritage Society; (One of the 8 dancers in the group February 22, 1981, in the SPJST and Sokol Hall, asked me when we departed after the program), if I would be willing to have a display table, with Mrs. Annie (Elzner) Spencer. My answer was: Yes, I would help all I can.

My dear daughter, Ann Peal, came at 9:30 a.m.; we loaded my box in her auto, and, in a few minutes, were at the Baker Junior High Library. Richard and his student pal, picked up the box and took it inside. Mrs. Annie Spencer was there busy covering tables with white tablecloth. She also put my books, pictures (in frames) and other things like albums on the tables next to our tables. Mrs. Betty Brandesky, dear wife of Fred and mother of son, Richard, had a display of homemade pastry. There were seven nations represented: Czechoslovakia, China, Holland (Dutch), Jewish, German and Polish.

In my opinion the Czechoslovakians and Germans had the most interesting displays. I sampled the German Apple Strudel and other pastries. Mrs. Betty Brandesky offered us (Mrs. Spencer and me) some Curd Cake (kolac tvarohovy).

All the displays were filmed and taped by the students. Student Richard Brandesky was in charge of the Czech section; he introduced Mrs. Spencer, Mark Majek and me to the assembly. Mr. Majek, for some time, was a student of the University of Texas in Austin, Texas where he also attended the Czech language classes. At the present time he is a student at the Corpus Christi State University. (In the annual meeting of the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas, held 22 February, he was elected one of the seven directors.)

At the end of the 19th century there were 17 Chinese inhabitants; at the present time the population is 22,000 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Mrs. Christine Knapek told me that two years ago she also attended a similar display with her pastry in the same school. About 20 years ago, the Sokol Corpus Christi attended a display which was sponsored by the Chambers of Commerce. I was there and it is in the Sokol minutes.

Richard Brandesky is the son of parents Fred and Betty Brandesky; the grandson of the late Fred Brandesky and the great-grandson of John Brandesky who moved here in 1906 from Bryan, Texas with his family. He bought some acreage of virgin brush land from Developer Stanley L. Kostoryz, the owner of The Bohemian Colony Land. Fred Brandesky, Sr., was one of the three Farmers' Cotton Gin directors when they gave me the job as a gin manager. We were always good friends. He told me that his father was also a Czech school teacher. If my memory serves me right, he passed away '2 December 1973. Fred had one brother, Joseph and his sister married Rudolph Severa.

Mark Majek is the son of Joseph Majek and grandson of Leo and Rosie Majek. Mark's mother is a widow and resides in Ingleside, Texas.

Social Supper At 5:30 p.m. March 21st my daughter, Ann, gave me transportation to the SPJST/Sokol Hall. Son-in-law Roy Peal was there to help prepare the barbecued chicken in the barbecue pit. The Sokol sisters also supplied the kitchen with their homemade products.

Supper was then served at 6 p.m. and the entertainment was taped and recorded music. For the dance from 9 to 1, there was music furnished by the Pavelka Band. It was another pleasant evening for me to meet so many loyal fraternalists.

Ann and I then departed at 7 p.m. for our homes.

50th Wedding Anniversary Celebrated Sam and Julia Allbright celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary Sunday, February 22, with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lodge No 74 between Crockett and Lovelady.

Their three children; namely, Johnnie Coghlan of Portsmouth, Virginia; Betty Kutach and Hurman Allbright of Houston, Texas were the hosts of the occasion. The couple was married 18 February 1931 in Crockett and have lived here all that time They have eight grandchildren: six in Virginia, and two in Houston; seven great-grandchildren: five in Virginia, and two in Florida. The table had a gold and white tablecloth, with a white-tiered wedding cake in the center, with finger sandwiches, cookies, mints, nuts and peach sherbert punch.

SPJST Member Participates In Texas Forensics League

Wendy Pesek Miss Wendy Pesek qualified for and entered the State Meet in the Texas Forensics League for the second consecutive year Her quali fying field was oration, and the meeting was held March 21-22. She was also the winner of the 1981 DAR Good Citizens award from this area.

Wendy is president of the Senior Class at Tuloso-Midway where she is serving her third year as a cheerleader. Her other accomplishments include serving as National Honor Society Vice President, Student Council Representative, Class Favorite and Football Sweetheart.

In 1980, she served as a delegate to the American Auxiliary Bluebonnet Girl's State, and in 1981 represented St. Peter's Parish in the Mardi Gras.

Wendy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Pesek of 9418 Paula, Corpus Christi, and the granddaughter of Pete Elzner, Sr., of Taft, Texas. Wendy and all her family are members of Corpus Christi Lodge No. 79.

EASTER MONDAY TRADITION

In many European countries Easter Monday is a holiday of merri rnent. In Czechoslovakia, boys plait willow wands and ornament them with bright ribbons. With these they switch the girls "so they won't be lazy" and every victim is obliged to give a decorated egg to her tormentor. Groups of boys may go from house to house and are rewarded with colored eggs and Easter cakes; in Czech Easter cake is called "Mazanec." Below is a recipe for it Easter Yeast Cake (Mazanec) 2 cakes fresh yeast 1 cup lukewarm milk 1/2 cup melted butter 2 egg yolks '/4 to 1/2 cup light raisins 4 1/2 cups flour 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/3 cup finely chopped almonds Place yeast in a bowl, sprinkle with 1 tablespoon sugar and stir until yeast and sugar is like a liquid.

Add 2 tablespoons flour and 2 tablespoons warm milk. Mix well. Cover with cloth and let rise in a warm place 50-10 minutes. Add the rest of ingredients and beat thoroughly with a wooden spoon until thoroughly blended. Take out of bowl onto floured pastry board and knead until dough is not sticky.

Place back in bowl, lightly oil top, cover with cloth and let rise in a warm place until dough is doubled.

Then shape dough on lightly floured board into one large round loaf or two smaller round loaves. Place on well-greased baking sheet and brush with one beaten whole egg. Sprinkle with more chopped almonds. Cut a cross in the top of each round with scissors. Let rise a bit longer and bake in a 400-degree oven 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 degrees and bake 30 minutes to 45 minutes more, depending on whether you are baking two rounds or one.

Janine Veselka Miss Janine Veselka, 15, has been selected to compete in the 1981 "Miss Texas Teen" USA Pageant to be held in Dallas April 18.

Janine is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Veselka of Taylor.

Contestants between the ages of 14 and 18, from all over the state, will be competing for the title. Each entrant must have a "B" grade average in school and is requested to have participated in community or charity work.

The contestants will be judged on civic involvement, school activities, appearance, poise, personality, patriotic speech or talent.

Janine's interests are almost all outdoor sports, including ice and roller-skating plus sewing and cooking.

From the State Youth Director ANOTHER "ACHIEVER" Dear Members, Stanley Kristinek, age 17, of Lodge 157 Lubbock, recently attended the Future Farmers of America and 4-H Junior Livestock Show in Houston. He is the son of Ernest and Fredda Kristinek, Jr. and the grandson of Ernest and Angeline Kristinek, Sr., all of Lubbock.

Entering a young "crossbreed" hog, weighing in at 249 pounds, Stanley's entry placed among the top 14 in this class. After much deliberation by the judges and anticipation for the contestants, awards were presented. Stanley's entry won "Reserve Champion of Breed". He was presented with pictures, ribbons, and a check for $4,114.00.

Stanley is one example of the fine young people that we have in our organization who put forth hard work and determination to face the many challenges that come along in life.

Congratulations, Stanley, for a job well done!

Excitement and anticipation is picking' up for the spring and summer activities in our SPJST Youth Department. Two of the district training classes (III & IV) have been held and the other district classes are being scheduled. It is important for all Youth Leaders to attend these district classes. Your District Youth Counselor has made arrangements for these classes for the benefit of Youth Leaders , Assistants, and others who may be interested in learning more about our youth program. Give your DYC the support they deserve by attending these classes and also, enjoy spending the day with other youth leaders and assistants.

The "new" Youth Rule Book is in the process of being printed and we hope to have these ready for you at the Youth Leaders' Weekend Retreat on April 4-5. There are some changes and revisions which we will be discussing during the retreat.

The current Youth Rule Book is still in effect until May 31.

Registration forms for the state wide Youth Leaders' Weekend Retreat are in the past three issues of the Vestnik. Please send these back to me as soon as you know whether you can or cannot attend this year.

There is a full, educational, funpacked weekend planned for this year; but we need everyone involved with the Youth Program to be present in order to make it success ful. (Wear comfortable clothing and bring your personal toilet articles.

You will need your bedding and you should bring a blanket since the nights are still cold.)

We had a good report this quarter considering that the winter months were bad and it was sometimes difficult to get to the meetings. There were nine youth clubs that did not send in a report and only one youth club that was not eligible for a reimbursement check this quarter.

The winter months kept some of us home due to bad weather and illness, however we still had an average of 615 youth attending the meetings throughout the state each month. This is still good representation and even though it may have been difficult to get to a meet ing there was still enough interest within our youth to be present under difficult situations. With the spring and summer activities beginning and the pretty weather starting, this number will increase each month.

District YAD and District camps will be starting in just a few months.

Remember, in order to be eligible to participate in these activities, you must have attended a majority of the meetings from last June 1 to this May 31 and have been a member since last October 31. There are only two more monthly meetings this youth year, April and May. Check your Youth Activity Calendar in the Vestnik for the upcoming events in each of the 7 Districts.

Plan to attend these events for they are planned and scheduled for the interest of promoting the youth and their interest in our Society.

Brother Sebetka is survived by one son, five daughters, ten grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge No 79, Corpus Christi, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed sister FRANCES G. BOXLEY, who passed away Wednesday, March 25, 1981 in a local hospital after a short illness.

She was born 19 September 1893.

She was a resident of Corpus Christi for 45 years.

Sister Boxley was preceded in death by her husband, George L. Boxley in 1977.

She was a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 79 since 1934.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Lillian Poenisch of Kerrville, Texas; one son, Ted Stasney of Bayside, Texas; two brothers, Joe Grossman of Temple and Rudy Grossman of Granger; three sisters, Emilie Janak of La Grange, Texas and Anna Zett and Lillian Horsak, both of Granger; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
