Mrs. Helen Matocha of La Grange, who is a teacher at St. Michael School in Weimar, received special Recognition from La Grange Chamber of Commerce President Billy Peel at that organization's annual banquet recently. She had saved the life of a drowning youth last summer at the city swimming pool.

Sister Matocha who received the award for "Most Outstanding Woman Award for 1980," is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 38 at Kovar and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V. H. Barina also of the same lodge. She received her degree in Education from the University of Texas and has five children; three of whom are students at the university; two who took Czech for two years. Sunday, March "8 your editor attended the District V Spring meeting hosted by Lodge No. 81, Needville in their nice building on spacious grounds. The officers and membership proved to be gracious hosts and served a very delicious meal. Yours truly bought a package of their delicious roast beef and "Needville" sausage (As Lodge No. 81 President Matcek called it) home and the family really enjoyed it the next couple of days. Maxine is Lodge No. 54, West secretary so she stayed in West for their quarterly meeting.

The meeting was pleasant and well-conducted by District V President Crossman and the reports were good. District V Secretary Pearl Hanka will have the particulars in her minutes.

The 235 or so mile distance to the South certainly makes a difference in the arrival of Spring; the trees are greener and grass is showing the signs of warmer weather. They also need some rain.

Here, in Central Texas around West, the Texas Bluebonnets are showing life and will be ready for their beautification of our highways and landscape in beautiful blue. *5*

Your editor has studied the biography and writings about Thomas Jefferson rather extensively and, in these times of United States history and even in our own SPJST Society, finds that much of what he felt, said and wrote is still very applicable, in our national and society's life and future.

One of the basic principles in Thomas Jefferson's thinking was that anyone entrusted with power over a period of time is almosecertain to pervert it into tyranny and exploitation; and that the people themselves are the only safe depository of power.

"I may err in my measure," he wrote, "but shall never deflect from the intention . . . to put it out of the power of the few to riot on the labors of the many."

Unless the people retain control over those entrusted with power, they will use it for oppression and the perpetuation of wealth and power in their own hands. No other depository of power has ever been found except the people themselves to protect them in their rights and their earnings."

"I am not one of those who fear the people," he declared. "They, and not the rich, are our dependence for continued freedom. The people, being the only safe depository of power, should exercise in person every (political) function which their

qualifications enable them to exercise."

Every government is republican in proportion as the people continued direct and constant control over it. Experience has demonstrated that, even under the best forms of government, those entrusted with power have, if given time and opportunity, perverted it into tyranny.

But how is it possible to establish and maintain a republic such as Jefferson envisioned? To him, the answer was quite simple — for nature has, with equal and generous hand, distributed the seeds of genius among all levels of the population.

No one can foretell when or among whom gifted individuals will emerge who, endowed with native ability, intelligence, and drive to accomplish, can rise to the top and become leaders and innovators in science, government, or the arts.

This question continued to occupy Jefferson's mind throughout his mature life. He explained that during earlier times, when land could be obtained for little or nothing, certain provident persons, began founding great families which, in time, resembled the European aristocracy. They caused laws of entail (limiting inheritances to a specific line) and primogeniture (making the eldest son the sole heir) to be enacted. These created a patrician order, distinguished by the splendor, and luxury of their establishments.

To "annul this privilege, and instead of an aristocracy of wealth ... to make an opening for the aristocracy of virtue, and talent, which nature has wisely provided for the direction of the interests of society, and scattered with equal hand through all its conditions, was deemed essential to a well-ordered republic." Jefferson therefore prepared four bills, including one to abolish the importation of slaves and another to disestablish the Anglican Church; these, he stated, would eradicate every fibre of past or potential aristocracy based on birth of wealth. When these laws, drawn by himself, were passed, they "laid the axe to the root of pseudo-aristocracy." *5*

March 29, 1981 The Spring District VII meeting will be held Sunday, March 29, 1981 at Robstown Community Hall with Lodge No. 117, Robstown as host lodge. The hall is located about 5 miles North-Northwest of Robstown, not farr off Highway 44, West.

Lodge No. 117, Robstown has two members receiving their 50-year pins this year and these will be awarded at the District VII spring meeting; the members are Louis Rychetsky and Betty Jurica.

After the meeting from 4 to 6 p.m., there will be a reception, hosted by Robstown Youth Club for the 15-year reunion of the past members of the Robstown Youth Club, (a sort of get-together of all the past members), Sister Thelma Hrncir was the youth leader who started the Robstown Youth Club in January 1966 and served as the leader for the 15 years. All past members are invited to come and do some reminiscing.

On the agenda, one subject that needs to be discussed at a district meeting is: What is the opinion of members of having only one district

meeting a year, instead of the two as we have now. Members, please give some thought to this and attend to voice your opinion at this district meeting, March 29th.

Members are notified that the Supreme Lodge appropriated for District VII, $250,000 for this quarter to be used to make real estate loans for homes at a reasonable rate of interest. Anyone needing more information on loans for homes can contact the District VII Director.

Sunday, March 29, we will be selling assorted sandwiches and pastries and coffee before the meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and, again, after the meeting until 6 p.m. for anyone wishing to have something to eat. From &to 10 p.m., Robstown Community Hall has a dance, with music by Tommie Vanek and his Orchestra of Yoakum, Texas; if anyone wishes to stay for a dance Sunday, March 29th.

Houston Lodge No. 88 Announces Fish Fry A day of food, fun, and frolic will be held Sunday, March 22, at Lodge No. 88 in Houston, beginning at 11:30 a.m. a delicious fish dinner consisting of fried fish, hushpuppies, French Fries, and tole slaw will be served; homebaked desserts by the ladies of the lodge will also be available. The price of the dinner will be $3.50 for adults and $2.50 for children with the desserts extra.

Our Lodge No. 88 Concert Orchestra will entertain you from the Gazebo, at 1 p.m. After the orchestra's concert, at 3 p.m. in the ballroom, the Drama Club will present a one-act- Czech comedy and a Czech documentary film, and, if all that doesn't satisfy your craving for fun, a free dance will start immediately after the film presentation.

It will be a Fun Day from start to finish. Plan on attending the Lodge No. 88 "Fish Day." We hope to see you present!

News From Lodge No. 88, Houston Our Friday, March 6 Dance with the Country/Western Band, The Telstars, entertained a full house of mostly young people. The dance was hosted by: Irene Lewis, in charge, with her husband, Ernest; also John and Bessie Vasula and Herbert and Gazela Huber.

Saturday night was a special dance with Al Pierson and his Big Band USA; this was the first time for Al Pierson to entertain here in the Chandelier Ballroom and everyone really enjoyed his music. The dance floor was full with couples smiling and applauding after every set played. We had a full house to enjoy the evening; as I understand, Al Pierson will be with us again in September, so watch for our advertising and get reservations in time and don't miss it! This dance was hosted by: Gus Urbanovsky, in charge of the dance and, at his side, Ann, his wife, in a navy blue chiffon gown; Dorothy Hensley, in aqua, and Jane Custard in rose chiffon; the ladies looked lovely as usual and blended in with our guests dressed formally.

Leeland Hensley with Chuck Custard were quite busy to seat the flow of incoming guests. It was a lovely evening and everyone is looking forward to September when Al Pierson will be here, again.

The District V meeting held Sunday, March 8 at Lodge No. 81, Needville, Texas was nicely attended. The dinner served at noon was very good and plentiful; the credit goes'to all these faithful lodge sisters working so hard. I would like to name them, but I am afraid I'd miss some; there were about seven serving in the kitchen, three at the pastry table and some at other places and they all deserve a big hand. The table was loaded with pastries which were delicious and donors were very generous. The meeting convened at 1 p.m. and proceeded very smoothly. For our departed members during 1980, two young ladies, dressed in white, lighted candles for the brief memorial service. Two sisters, Gusta L. Lenart and Matilda Slacalek, were presented with the 50-year membership pins and lovely corsages. Reports by the district officers and District V Director Louis Hanus were very good. Our Legal Advisor Reuben Lesikar's report was followed by Editor Rudy Sefcik. The newly-elected District V officers are: Tillie Helmcamp, president; Jerry F'rochazka, 1st vicepresident; Sidon Tumis, 2nd vicepresident; Viola Cox, secretary; Tommy Lostak, treasurer; Joyce Mynar, youth counselor; and Marilyn Veselka, assistant youth counselor. Brother Reuben Lesikar installed the officers and the meeting was adjourned and a dance followed.

I wish to thank Brother Louis Hanus for furnishing my transpor tation, Steve Kelly and I appreciated the convenience. On the way we went by the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home, Louis wanted to show off the pecan trees he planted a few weeks ago with Tom Jecmenek and Tim Kostom; and what is so special about these pecan trees is that they were christened with female names: Della, Rosalee, Clara and Oleta and I do

hope to make it official! They should be tagged with name plates.

Brother Norval and Frances Crossman, immediately after the meeting, left on a long, cold trip to Shatuck, Oklahoma to be with Norval's sister, Mrs. Roper, while she will undergo a serious operation.

Frances thinks they will be gone at least two weeks. They will have a trying trip because reports showed icy roads and lots of snow. Be careful!

A belated birthday was observed

by Brother Tim Kostom after the Saturday night dance. Rosalee, his spouse, invited 3o guests to enjoy a delicious breakfast after dancing half of the night to the tunes of Al Pierson.

Please take note of this: April 9th, on Thursday night's social night, the committee will celebrate our 16th Lodge Anniversary by giving away 16 baskets filled to the brim with a nice line of groceries that any household can make use of. Yes, 16, and you might be the lucky one; so come out and find out on April 9, 1981!

The monthly lodge meeting was fairly well-attended with one guest, Mrs. Lillian Contiz of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, visiting here with her sister, Emilie Zemko for a few weeks. (Emilie never drove a car in her life, but she took driving lessons and is doing very well. Anyone brave enough to get in the'Houston traffic is a hero.) An interesting discussion took place about our home building; after deliberation, it was given to the Board of Trustees to analyze the possibilities and report in the next meeting. Dr. W. Sou chek and wife, Alice, were present.

Dr. Souchek, Czech instructor, at the University of Houston, with a few words, expressed his thanks to Lodge No. 88 for the scholarship donation to provide for some students. After than, Dr. Souchek departed to attend a rehearsal in progress for the day of the Fish Fry March 22nd.

The following members were reported on the sick list: William Wallace, son-in-law of Frank Tesar, past president of Lodge No. 88; Birthday Club Sister Sophie Hempel is at Heights Hospital in serious condition; Marie Stayton was to undergo surgery Wednesday, March 11 in St. Joseph Hospital; Robert Jaksch, the youngest grandson of Herbert and Emma Jarisch, was operated in the Diagnostic Hospital and is doing fine. Brother Joe Fusig was due to come home Wednesday, March 11 and will stay with his daughter, Helen Hegwood; she visits her father everyday and pampers him and, this Joe enjoys but looks forward to coming home. Brother Joe Bravenec (at one time being care-taker of our lodge with his wife, Minnie) was reported very ill, but, news came after the meeting stated that Brother Bravenec passed away.

Another wedding anniversary took place, but in privacy: Bill and Lena Vasek celebrated their 50th anniversary February 16, 1981 and Bill's 26th birthday! Both are such nice people to know. I marvel over Bill's quiet way; to his wife, first, he gave a beautiful flower arrangement for Valentine's Day and, as an anniversary gift, a golden medallion on a gold chain which she proudly showed off after we asked her who gave it to her. The two people have

no children, but raised Billie (now Ennis were coming October 25 and 16), Ginger, 26 and, of course, 26 and November 1 and he felt that Ginger's baby, Liza, age two. Brother Gebala congratulated the first lady on the board, a very gracious lady, Sister Thelma Hrncir; everyone should help her in her new office. Brothers Silas Smith and Gene McBride, State Field Managers, are doing an excellent job; Brother Jerry Mikulas will be in charge of the data processing. Brother Gebala stated that the moving of the museum into the basement is two months ahead of time and by January 1, 1981, the museum will be three times as large; thanks to Brother Otto Harms.

Questions were asked of the vice president about the data processing.

Brother Emil Mattila, explained to the membership the construction of the Vestnik which will be in tabloid form, beginning January 1, 1981.

The amount of pages will be 16 (same amount as the 32 now); same front page and centerfold will be used for reports, one page will be allowed for advertisements and 50 issues will be published per year.

Under old business, a position of assistant District VII young counselor was not filled at the spring meeting. Sister Polly Bayer was nominated and elected by acclamation. Flagbearer also was needed.

Nomination made by Sister Monta Foster made a motion that Cynthia Tepera be elected as flagbearer.

Seconded by Sister Adela Sijansky that she be elected by acclamation.

Sister Cynthia Tepera was elected.

Nominating Committee appointed are: Brothers Dominic Netek and Frank Veselka; the third committee member will be appointed at the Spring meeting.

A letter was read from SL President Nick A. Morris. It was a response to an inquiry made by Sister Helen Pavelka, about a person holding two district positions simultaneously; namely, District Youth Counselor and District Representative on the By-Law Committee; a consultation with the legal adviser, Brother Reuben Lesikar found there is nothing in the Supreme Lodge By laws.

Lodge No 117, Robstown bid for the Spring meeting. Motion made by Brother Emil Matula, and seconded

by Brother Monta Foster that the meeting be hosted by Lodge No 117.

Highlights of West Lodge No:54 Meeting A fair group of members assembled at the lodge to attend the March 8 quarterly meeting, which was convened by President Ernest Zahirniak. Proceedings were trans acted with the usual standard procedure, which included reading of the minutes, officers' reports, correspondence and announcements.

Items of interest pertained to the repair work performed in our refreshment area by one of the local business associates, plus other brief comments on lodge affairs.

Vice President Ted Kocian presented a favorable lodge/insurance report on Financial/Secretary and Treasurer Bob Wright's behalf, who was unable to attend, due to an out-of-town commitment.

Brother Zahirniak read a list of new policyholders for Lodge No. 54; namely, Ryan Volcik Rachel Podsed nik, Robyn Podsednik and Shirley Pustejovsky. Additional insurance coverage was issued to Jackie Barton, Mike Maier and Sharon Maier, and transferees from Elk Lodge No. 35 included: Ernest W. Nors, Jo Ann Nors and Deborah J. Nors. We appreciate each of you selecting our lodge for membership and we also wish to extend our appreciation to the sales representa tives who made these transitions possible.

President Zahirniak announced that Brother F. W. Nesrsta of our lodge is a 50-year membership pin recipient and he will be honored at our forthcoming quarterly meeting.

Youth Leader Mona Zahirniak informed the members about the past/present club activities and that attendance sometimes conflicts with their school functions.

A letter was then discussed con cerning "unrelated lodge activities" and the president and secretary both elaborated on the clarification of its contents; since there were no questions asked on the matter, our chairman proceeded to the next item of business which included distribution of Premium Refund checks.

Marcela Thalova of Czechoslovakia was then introduced to the members; she is the bride-to-be of Brother Jan Vaculik, our Czech lodge reporter. On behalf of Lodge No. 54, we extend our best wishes to both of them.

Our sympathies are expressed to the families of Brothers Alfonse Cocek and Henry Skerik, who passed away since the previous quarterly meeting; may they rest in peace.

New Tabor Lodge No.17Plans Annual Barbecue Dear Readers, Our last monthly meeting was held March 1, 1981. The meeting was called to order by President Andrew Vavra.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all members present.

Secretary Melvin Skrabanek read the minutes from our previous meeting and they were approved as read.

Resolutions of Sympathy were read for Brother Frank J. Rychlik and Sister Inez Green. May they rest in peace.

For unfinished business it was agreed among all members present to have Weaver's Air-Conditioning air cool and heat our lodge hall. We also elected Secretary Melvin Skra-' banek to get bids on remodeling the outside of our lodge hall.

Under new business a motion was made and passed to buy liability insurance for our lodge hall. A motion was made and passed to set a price of $50 to rent our lodge hall once it is air-conditioned and heated.

We also made plans for our annual barbecue, which will' be held May 8, 1981. The meeting was ťhen adjourned.

Dear Members and Friends: Greetings to all of 7Óu, I am back at the old stand for oi,e month only because your capable reporter, Mary Ann Krivanek, is recovering from surgery and 'Í>res. Albert Kubala called me to stand in.

The business of the March meeting was all conducted in order and all reports wereřavorable. Our Sunshine Chaírperson Martha Durham told of several sick members: Agnes Merlick in Medical Plaza, Olga Moore ailing in O'Fallon, Ill., Danny Mikusek with heart trouble, Bill Krivanek had su'rgery, Inez Krivanek fighti\}g a long bout with the flu and young Melanie Krivanek endured the measles. Sym­ pathy was expressed to Millie Wruble whose brother, Charles Haba, died recently, and to Dodie and Jack Leonard who lost their son, Gary. Dodie is Treasurer John Murphy's sister. The death of Millie Mikeska of Lodge 47, Seaton was a loss to several of our members, her brother, Richard Hubenak and sisters Clara Cohn, Alice Lindsey, Annie Langer and Minnie Tatrevitch. Mrs. Frank Prashicka's father also died recently. Esta Belle Hubenak related that Alex Bunker was feeling better and is settled in at the Jarvis Ht. Nursing Center.

Memorial donations to the building fund are $5, from Mr. and Mrs. Harold Reynolds for Margie Picha. For Sister Helen Zich, $15, from the Zich family and $10, from Mr. and mrs. Francis Novacek. The · Skrasek family seiit $15, in memory of Helen Skrasek. · Following the meeting members enjoyed pastry and coffee furnished by our own good baker ladies and served by Bennie Bartek.

Please remember the dance sponsored by our budding Youth Club. It's on April 3rd, 8:80 till 12:80 with the Math Sladky Orchestra from Nebraska. The children and their hardworking leaders Gordon and Charyl Hubenak deserve your support. Cakes will be needed for the activities that evening also.

Sister Catherine and Harold Garrison are Michael's proud grand­ parents and Sister Mary Hale, great­ grandmother; Brother Frank Picha is the proud grandfather of Brian. It is the first for both families, we know they have a lot of happiness ahead of them.

Reading of minutes and correspondence by Secretary Ruby L. 13olton began the meeting. A "thank you" letter from the Czech American Cultural Society in Dallas was read, as was a "thank you" card from Mrs. Sarah Wilson.

Old business heard the reconsideration of new folders for our songs, prices to be reconfirmed, and presented at the forthcoming rehearsal.

Officers for the coming year were elected and are President and Reporter Dorothy Morris, Vice President Anne Krcha, SecretaryTreasurer Lillian Kosarek, Histor ians Martha Musacek and Lillian Kosarek.

Musical Director Annie Jakubec has said she will serve us in that capacity again for the coming year.

We will accept her offer by vote af firmation when we meet next time Henry Janacek, who accompanies us instrumentally, will be asked to stay with us, too.

Rogers, the oldest town in Bell County and not too far from Seaton Star Hall, will celebrate its centennial anniversary on April 25.

To join in their festivities, a float will be sponsored and entered in the parade by the SCC. Committee members, having made general plans, presented them to the club and more specifics are to be told. All members will be able and are en couraged to take part. Since this is a club project, any ideas are welcome.

A once-a-year event in that community, it supports their senior citizens' projects throughout the year; a special fondness for our older friends rests with the CC members.

More activities for the Choral Club will have us singing at Burmont Rest Home and Southland Villa Nursing Center in May Rehearsal on March 10 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. wilI prepare our Buckholts program. Many singers were there last year. Please, come again, all of you. Too, a new song is being learned, one which you are sure to like.

The club thanked Ruby L. Bolton, immediate-past secretary-treasurer, for her service to us in that office during the past year. She is a mirthgiving lady, and much levity was and is enjoyed in her company.

We were all saddened by the passing away of Sister Margie Picha last month. She and her husband, Frank, attended our meetings faithfully and she will be missed by all of us. Our sympathy is extended to Frank and his family.

Mary Ann Krivanek just came home from the hospital after having surgery. I heard that she is doing real well and we want to wish her a speedy recovery.

25th Infantry Division Association Reunion Veterans of the 25th Infantry Division serving World War II, Korea, Vietnam and post-Vietnam will hold their 32nd annual reunion at the Gunter Hotel, 205 E. Houston Street, San Antonio, Texas, July 24 to 26, 1981. Lt. Gen. Stanley R. Larsen former Cacti Regimental Commander and 6th Army Commander will be the guest speaker for the occasion.

The registration desk and the hos pitality suite will open on Thursday for early arrivals. Committees meet during the day Friday; that evening the Reunion moves into high gear with the traditional Friday Night Social. Saturday features the morning Business Meeting, an afternoon free for sightseeing, and the evening's Banquet and Military Ball.

Activities conclude with a Memorial Service Sunday morning.

The famed Tropic Lightning Division received its baptism of fire at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, December, 7, 1941, subsequently fought on Guadalcanal and in the Northern Solomons, and culminated its Pacific activities on Luzon in the Philippines, where it set an Army record of 165 days of continuous combat.

Following five years of occupation duty in Japan, the Division was rushed to Korea within two weeks after the North Korean army crossed the 38th Parallel on June 25, 1950. Participating in every campaign of that conflict, Division members won a remarkable 13 Medals of Honor. Finally, after an absence of 12 years, the Army's "Greatest Combat Division" returned to Hawaii for training in new techniques, especially the combat use of helicopters.

The training paid off, for in 1964 the 25th moved into Viet Nam within days of the outbreak of hostilities; again living up to its motto "Ready to Strike - Anywhere!

Anytime!" Every task completed in that little-honored, little-understood conflict, the full strength, all volunteer 25th Division is now back at Schofield, the Army's Ready force for the entire Pacific area.

NEWSBRIEFS Clifton Martinets, 60, died in the VA Hospital in Temple on Tuesday afternoon, March 10th, after a brief illness. Funeral services were held from the Goodnight Funeral Home in Bartlett on Friday afternoon with burial in the Holland City Cemetery.

Bro. Martinets was a longtime member of Lodge 80 in Holland, having served as treasurer for several years and financial secretary since 1971. He was also an active sales representative for about the same period of time. -- NAM ***

Persons wishing to mail a first class letter will find that the rates will go from 154 to 184 on March 22nd. This is three times what it was a decade ago. A glance backward will tell us that the first class letter rate was 64 until May 1971 when it went to 84. It went to 104 in 1974, 134 in 1975, and the current rate of 154 went into effect on May 29, 1978.

Even with this increase, the postal service still expects to lose money and it probably won't be too long before another rate hike will be sought. —NAM.

Our hearts and minds are filled with many fond memories of the good times we have had over the years. We feel our lives have been enriched with your friendships and hope that a few of you carry the same feelings.

There are so many people to thank for all the help and support they gave us that we dare not mention names, but thank each and everyone of you for your kindness and support to us and the SPJST Youth Program.

It will feel strange not working with the youth anymore, but you will know we are always behind you and are willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed.

God bless each of you on your endeavors in the future and for letting us be just a small part of your lives.

District Youth Counselor

My report today is my final report as District V Youth Counselor.

I was elected Assistant District Youth Counselor in 1972 and assumed the position of District V Youth Counselor upon the resigna DISTRICT VI tion of Marlene Caraway in Training Class - Latter part of April; February 1973, and then elected to place to be announced; YAD this office officially each, year Sunday, July 19th, at the St. thereafter.

Phillips School in El Campo, with Through my years in this office, I El Campo Lodge No 50 as host; have had the pleasure of attending Camp - June 29-July 2nd, at camp with over 800 youths from Bastrop State Park District V and attended every State DISTRICT VII Youth Leaders' Seminar, District V Training Class - Open; YAD - Sun., YAD, State YAD, State Royalty and July 26; Camp (Specific dates set held District V Youth Leaders' later) - August Seminars while in office. I have also attended every District Youth --SPJSTCounselors meeting held each November at the Supreme Lodge as well as the District Youth Counselors' meeting the night before the State Youth Leaders' Seminar each year. I took part in instructing classes in Youth Club Point System, Communication with Youth, Games and Crafts at these seminars.

Through these years I have spent many evenings visiting in District V lodges to promote the youth program or to help with a youth club needs. Many of these trips were fruitful and many disheartening; we have several lodges and members that will not tolerate a youth program in their lodge. My sympathy goes out to these members who will not accept our youth. They do not know the

pleasures they are missing. Certainly you will have a few problems, but weren't you a youth at one time?

Children have not changed, only the times have and they need all the understanding, love and attention we can give them. Apparently our members who are unwilling to accept our youth program do not realize that the biological clock does not stand still and they are not going to always be around to run their lodges. It is very difficult to go to a lodge and sell the Youth Program when there are maybe 24 members present and you look out at them and realize that possibly, the youngest member in the group is in their late 50's. These are the lodges to be pitied, because, someday, in the near future that lodge will be extinct.

Through my work with -the youth I have made many friends around the state, adults, as well as youth.

Therefore I feel my life has been filled with many riches and fond memories.

District V has always been an outstanding District at Camp, State YAD and State Royalty bringing home many trophies and honors to their lodges. I am extremely pleased to know from a recent letter I received from President Morris, the head of the Youth Department that he is going to initiate something new at camp this year softball and films.

Well, District V has had softball, volleyball, horseshoes, tennis, films, crafts, group games and swimming, which all games were played on a competitive basis with the winning team being honored in a special way at the end of camp. This has been done in our District V camp for the past 10 years that I know of, as my children started going to camp 10 years ago and possibly done before this; so, once again, District V has set a precedent for the whole state.

I am deeply endebted to the many people who have worked with me over the years. My special thanks to Dorothy Massey, our past State Youth Director, who was always of utmost help and a close friend of District V Youth; to Dan Berry, my assistant and right hand man; to Lodge 142, Heneretta and Gene Veselka, their assistants and youth club; to Galveston, Pasadena and Rosenberg Lodges who all had active youth clubs at one time; to Lake Jackson for your work trying to start a youth club, (if you think it is easy to be a Youth Leader or assistant, just try it) and last, but not least, to my home Lodge 88. I am not trying to be prejudiced but you will have to admit as I, without Lodge 88 and all their hardworking youth workers, our District V Youth Program would barely exist. Here too, Lodge 88's potential membership for their youth club has never been met, but, where would they put the youth if only half of the 2,000 youth eligible in this lodge were to become active? There is only one answer: we, the members need to look for the provisions and welfare of our youth; encouragement not discouragement is needed.

I only hope you will help the new District V Youth Counselor increase the District V Youth Program. Plan for the future and strive to keep this program alive.

has, anymore, as well as the responsibilities that have been taken away from the new State Youth Director.

It seems as though a slow phaseout program is in the making; so, as concerned members, you and I and mostly our District Director need to fight to keep our youth program on top, where it has always been in the fraternal society. Stand by your new DYC, help them, support them and give your all. Let's not take this away from our youth; they have little enough! Along with my special thanks to each of you I leave you with this plea: Support our youth and help keep the youth program alive. ENTHUSIASM CONTINUES AT COTTONWOOD LODGE NO. 6 YOUTH CLUB The Cottonwood Youth Club met March 1st with a good attendance; we had one guest.

February 13 the club members had a bake sale at Leroy Bank and they did real well. (They had planned another bake sale March 13 again at the Leroy Bank. Our youth club members were asked to bring some baked goods to the bake sale.)

February 13 we also held a Valentine Party, decorated box contest, games and ate hamburgers and all the goodies.

We had our kite-flying contest and the ones who won in different categories were: Terry Hykel, prettiest; Karen Hykel, oddest; Damon Perez, highest flying; Keith Hykel and Shirley Dobecka, tied for smallest flying kite; Lenette Hyke, best homemade; Theresa Dobecka, best homemade flying.

In addition we also had a kite poster contest for the teenagers and juniors. Teenage winners were: 1st—Karen Hykel, 2nd — Theresa Dobecka, 3rd — Delores Dobecka.

Junior winners included: 1st — Lanette Hykel, 2nd — Shirley Dobecka and 3rd —Kevin Dobecka.

All of them had a lot of fun.

At our next meeting April 5, the youth clubbers will have their Easter program and egg hunt with prize eggs. After the • egg hunt we

Another occasion for a celebration is the Namesday or the Birthday. In this country, one's Namesday is rarely celebrated, but in Czechoslovakia, it is put on the same level as the Birthday. On the days of popular patron saints, such as St. Joseph, St. Wenceslaus (Vaclav) or St. Anna, it is not uncommon to have bands of musicians going from one Joseph's house to another and serenading him. Also dances are often organized on the nearest Saturday and named Josefska, Vaclayska or Annenska zabava. The word "zabava" stands for entertainment, but is often used also to mean dance.
