Couple Observes 25th Wedding Anniversary February 19th Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Bucanek observed their Silver Wedding Anniversary February 19th. They cele brated the occasion with friends and relatives at a dinner and dance held at the VFW Hall in Circleville Sun day, February 15; the music was provided by the Texas Outlaws.

The couple was united in marriage February 19, 1956 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Mrs. Bucanek is the former Irene Marie Zycha of Taylor.

Mr. and Mrs. Bucanek, their children and grandchildren are all members of Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29.

Sunday, February 22nd, the couple renewed their marriage vows during mass with Rev. Lonnie Urban officiating at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taylor.

The couple has two daughters, Mrs. Debbie Matoska and Mrs. Cheryl Hegar and two sons, Charles

In this issue is the annual report from our SL Financial-Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr., which takes up quite an amount of time to prepare; you are encouraged to read it. *** Your home is different from every home in the world, and you like it that way. You and your wife chose the house together — you agreed on the things that completed the furnishings. Some of the first purchases you made are still there, along with things you bought as recently as last week. Even the food tastes better there, the chairs sit better, and the neighborhood continues to be pleasant. It's the finest place to go to at the end of the day, the most wonderful spot when you have been away overnight, and a very welcome haven in times of distress and discouragement. No matter whose house you go into, something important is missing. Something you find at home that cannot be bought in even the best stores. Because, home is where the heart is. To the man who loves his home and family, there is no other answer to Life Insurance but "Yes."

Prove that the prospect can afford to buy. The man who says, "I'll think it over" may not be sure that he can afford your product. Mention the savings, the small investment, the self-liquidating features of your plan, the addition to his net worth.

One life man asks the "think-itover" prospect what he spends each day on cigarettes and/or cigars, then explains. "For less than that, you can guarantee yourself $25,000 or more on your next birthday."

Start filling out the application.

Get your prospect's mind off an immediate "yes" or "no" by asking him questions — his address, his official title in the company, his place of birth. Meanwhile, keep writing and act confident. Your boldness may carry him over the threshold at once and he may sign. *5*

Work is the yeast that raises the dough. We may joke just putting in our time, but when payday comes around we feel mighty happy to have some money that we know we have earned. If we are going to bake a cake, we must start with good ingredients and self-assurance. When going to work, it is the same thing.

The ingredients to work with are up to us, and we will be paid to do a job on our own ability.

If we honestly strive to practice all the above things, we will be good and loyal workers and will have the respect and friendship of others. *5*

SUPREME LODGE

From the President's Office 1980 Statistics And Other Information Dear Members: Now that our annual statement to the Insurance Department in Austin and the actuary's, vice president's, financial secretary's, and secretary's work have been completed, we can report to you on the net gain figures for 1980, as of 31 December 1980.

Article 37(b) of our by-laws also stipulates that the president makes periodic reports to the membership.

This is the second such report this year. (See Vestnik issue of January 7th for the first report).

Summarizing the highlights, we see the following for 1980: Mortuary premiums collected were up 4.95 percent. This represents in excess of 2 million dollars in premium income for 1980, a record all-time high for the SPJST! Income investment was up 11.07 percent.

Considering all factors involved, including the national economic climate, I think that we had a very good year in 1980. We issued a total of 2,607 certificates for $18,969,996 in life insurance. This shows that there was some hard and diligent work on the part of our sales representatives, for which we are grateful. We issued a few less certificates than we did the year before and a little less in life insurance coverage, however, you will see that the net increase in insurance was a nice increase over last year.

This is because our members, both old and new, have been buying larger policies. This is significant.

Last year I reported that our average policy amounted to approximately $6,560. Our average issued policy at the present is in the amount of $7,277. This increase in the average amount of the certificates can be attributed to our emphasis on an improved training program for our sales representatives. This, in turn, has increased the amount of mortuary premiums received, which also increased our investment income.

Net Gain. For the year 1980 we had a net gain of 133 certificates and a net increase in insurance issued of $9,455,516. The latter figure is almost a million dollar increase over 1979. This apparent drop in net certificate increase can be attributed to three factors: 1) The absence of new lodge facilities in 1980 which had dramatically affected our growth in the past few years; 2) An important factor continues to be our No. 1 national economic enemy — INFLATION; and 3) Explanation: The figure of 133 net gain in certificates may be misleading because the 2607 new certificates replaced all the terminations (deaths, lapses, expirys, surrenders and maturities) held by older members in much smaller amounts, whereas the beance of the new

certificates were sold to people representing rather large amounts of insurance. So far this year, production continues to be well ahead of last year, so we're off to a good start in 1981! We appreciate all your efforts in behalf of the SPJST. Our sales campaign is also progressing steadily, so despite these unfavorable factors, we are still doing quite well. Thank you!

All districts met and exceeded their quotas in 1980. We salute the top sales representatives for 1980 in all of the districts based on annualized premiums. They will appear in the Vestnik after they are presented their awards at their district sales banquets.

Surrendering For Cash Value. In last year's report I mentioned that we were working on alternatives to members taking the step of surrendering their policies for the cash value because when you cash surrender your policy you have nothing left. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska has implemented a form that he sends out to the members requesting surrender and the results have proven to be very positive.

Certificates In Force. We have a total of 56,182 certificates in force as of 31 December 1980 for a total of $147,339,638.00 in life insurance coverage, a nice increase in both categories over 1979.

Assets. Our assets now total in excess of $29,000,000.00, an increase of 5.67 percent over 1979.

Net Percentage Gain. The annual net percentage gain in 1980 on our investments was 7.39 percent, vs.

7.03 percent in 1979. This net percentage figure plays a significant role in computing our yearly camp fund allocation. (See below).

1981 Quota& The 1981 insurance quotas have been set for the districts at the same level as for 1980. With everyone's cooperation, I'm confident we will achieve these goals. Now, here are some more figures since my New Year's Message and Report.

8 Percent Refund To Lodges. The 8 percent refund to lodges for 1980 amounted to $163,046.28.

Solvency Ratio. Our solvency ratio stands at 131.09, which constitutes $131.09 in assets for every $100 in liabilities. (It was 130.04 in 1979, so this is a nice increase.)

Surplus Fund. Our surplus fund for the protection of certificate holders is in the amount of $6,963,01825, also an increase over 1979.

Premium Refunds. The premium refund checks sent out every month

by Financial Secretary Mikulas' department to individual members through their lodges amounted to $320,444.93 for 1980, plus $5,105.15 to the lodges for postage in handling these refund checks.

Camp Fund Allocation. The advance camp fund allocation to each district is being computed and will soon be sent to the district counselors by SYD Jann Thomas. This is the fund that is received by the district youth counselors, is controlled by them and disbursed by them. This year, as in years past, this fund is derived from the annual net percentage gain on the Society's investments, which amounted to 7.39 percent in 1980. This was computed on $450,000, per action of the last convention and will amount to $33,255 in 1981, also an increase.

A district audit committee is to

audit this fund and report to the membership at least once a year.

District General Expense Fund.

The Supreme Lodge contributes the sum of $400 a year to the General Expense Fund of each district, as set forth in Article 44(h) of the by-laws.

This allocation should be of help to the district. This will be given the districts in their spring meetings.

Workshops And By-Laws. We trust that those of you concerned are making plans to attend the workshops which have been announced now for many weeks. We will be passing out copies of the new by-laws enacted at the last convention and discussing some of the more important changes in the by-laws in the workshops. The new by-law book is, in a sense, a "new ball game" in that the provisions, in addition to some of them being changed, have been considerably rearranged and re-codified and we are having to get "re-acquainted" with the new set of by-laws.

Regarding the workshops themselves, although the attendance has been reasonably good at all those we have held over the past few years, our registration sheets show that there are still lodges which have never been represented in these workshops and these are probably the officers who need the information the most. Any information you gain in these workshops cuts down on inquiries to the Home Office during the year. That is what they're for - to establish better communication and to improve our mutual administrative services to members. Certainly the notice about these workshops, which started last October, have been adequate and enough in advance for those concerned to make necessary plans to be present.

A Look Ahead And Some Observation& This year's census figures show that almost 80 percent of Texas' population lives in cities, that is, urban areas and that these urban areas are still growing. Five of these areas grew by more than 40 percent during the 1970's. They were: BryanCollege Station by 61.5%, Houston grew by 887,646 people moving in, the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex by 24.5%, San Antonio by 20%, and

Austin by 47.7%. If almost 80 percent of our population lives in cities, that leaves about 20% living in rural or small city areas. Not too many years ago the figures would have shown you exactly the opposite. These statistics tell you something; for one thing, they tell you where the bulk of the people are, which has significance for the SPJST. The Supreme Lodge is embarking on a course of modernization and updating the overall administration of our Society. These efforts were buttressed by the decisions and support of the last convention for which we are grateful. Whatever problems face us, we must face together but our common objective should be to improve the overall services that we offer and growth and stability will naturally follow. It will take all of us working together to achieve this.

We are living in the 20th Century.

We are living in different times. We must adjust to "those times. Do you realize that in 20 years this century will have closed and we will be moving into the 21st Century?

There will be more changes. We must continue to meet those changes and adjust to the times.

Seaton Lodge No. 47 Lodge 47 met March 1 at 2 p.m. with 100 members and 13 visitors present. The meeting was called to order by President Alfred Klusacek.

Flagbearers David Pechal and Nora Skrabanek (in the absence of her brother, Gene) led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silence for our deceased sister, Millie Mikeska.

Our sympathy to her family. May she rest in eternal peace.

Sister Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers and Sales Rep. Also the minutes of the last meeting, and correspondence. All officers and chairpersons gave satisfactory reports.

Our visitors were: Bob and Madeline Thompson, Ruth Janacek, Ann Hejl, Wilma Frerichs, John Coufal, Ann Balusek, Albert Cabla, Mathew Cabla, Dorothy Allen, Nancy Posvar, Linda Vasek and Leola Kruse. We welcome all visitors and hope you can come again.

Our new members are: Lanita M. Anglin, Diane Frerichs, Elsie Margaret Tollirer, Lester Tollirer, Gary L. Tucker, Jr., Norma Tucker and Robert Michael Wilson. We welcome all new members and we hope all of you can attend our meetings and other activities. We had one transfer to our Lodge: George T. Kennedy.

Reported on the sick list were Lucy Mihatsch and Woodrow Marek (who had both been in the hospital but were at the meeting, we know they are recovering very nicely.)

Also Viola Chervenka and Jerry Sefcik. We wish all of you a speedy recovery.

President Klusacek thanked Calvin Skrabanek, Donnie Pechal, David Pechal, Jerry Pechal, Albert Koslovsky and Alfred L. Klusacek for helping clean the septic tank and install a new lid. He also thanked Sister Frances Hejl for planting flowers in our planter boxes in front of the hall. We know this will be a nice asset to our hall as it was last year. We always welcome any improvements to our Lodge.

The members voted to donate $25.00 to Shana Patterson to help pay expenses to Operaland, Tennessee. Shana is a member of the Central Texas Girls Choir at Mary Hardin Baylor University.

Frank Maruna, chairman of the Planning Committee, gave a report on plans and bids for a metal building to be used for storage shed and service building. The Planning Committee was given the go ahead to continue with the building plans.

Alfred L. Klusacek, secretary of the board, read minutes of the Board meetings for the month of February.

March 13-Friday, 5:30 p.m. is a date to remember. The youth club will hold its annual Chili Supper and game night to help raise funds.

According to Youth Leader Shirley Patterson, there will be a lot of entertainment for young and old so everyone plan on coming and

support our youth. The chili will be made by none other than Floyd Stuteville so I'm sure we are all in for a treat.

March 15 - Sunday, 2 p.m. is the time for the District II Spring meeting. Lodge 47 will be serving a supper plate for $2.00. This will consist of sausage, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, green beans and bread. Ladies of our lodge are asked to bring sweets for the kitchen.

Sunday, March 22-Battle dance between LeeRoy Matocha vs Red Raven from 3-9 in the afternoon.

Plan on coming.

Tuesday, March 31-Math Sladky of Nebraska will be playing for our dancing pleasure. We hear his records on the radio-so now we have a chance to see and hear him in person. This is his first tour in Texas.

Our dress policy was changed at this meeting by a large majority that wanted it changed. Now you can come to Star Hall neatly dressed, no halters, shorts, or hat will be allowed, however.

Woodrow. Marek, chairman of the Audit Committee, announced the audit will meet Wednesday, April 1 at 7 p.m.

Birthdays for March are: Clara Hejl, Woodrow Marek, Adeline Kohutek and our visitor, John Coufal, Happy Birthday to all!

Our next regular meeting will be Sunday, April 5 at 2 p.m. Y. L. Shirley Patterson announced the youth will also have an Easter egg hunt at this time Sec. Dolores Skrabanek read the refund checks. Door prizes were won

Dear Members: The monthly meeting for March will be held Sunday, March 22 instead, of March 15, to allow the sales representatives to attend the SR banquet. The March 22nd meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m., and the youth will meet at 2 p.m.

There will be an important letter from SL President Nick Morris read at this meeting, so come out and hear this letter, and voice your views on this matter. We need all our members taking a part in the matters concerning our Lodge No. 66.

Planned for SPJST Softball Team of Lodge No. 84, Dallas

Season

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Spring will be here soon and we, at Lodge No. 84, are starting preparations for another season of softball, our 28th consecutive season.

The team will start practicing and getting ready to play in the DSMA

City Major League. The season will probably open about the last week of March or the first week in April.

Jerry Zabojnik will be the team manager this season and I will assist him as the business manager and help wherever I can. We will have about the same team with perhaps two or three new players. We hope to have the help and support of the same sponsors as last season, again, so please don't let us down and lend us your assistance.

I will attempt to submit reports to the Vestnik, the same as I have in the past, and to keep our members and readers informed on the progress of the team.

Our annual fund-raising "Softball Team Benefit Dance" will not be held until Saturday night, May 30th at the Lodge No. 84 Hall and the Czech Harvesters will again play your favorite polkas, waltzes, and popular western tunes on this special evening.

We hope that a lot of our members and friends will come out to our games this season.

Future schedules of games and reports will be submitted in future issues of the Vestnik.

of Needville Lodge No. 81 Meeting Highlights

(Next Meeting April 12th) The SPJST Lodge No. 81 held its regular monthly meeting March 1 at 2 p.m. with President Charlie Matcek presiding.

Sister Vlasta Hurta led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag; all remained standing for a few moments as a tribute to our deceased Sister Anna Sralla. Sister Sralla passed away at the Gulf Coast Medical Center after a short illness.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to her family and also to Sister Mary Werner in the loss of her mother who was Sister Sralla's roommate at the hospital and died the same day.

All officers answered the roll call, except our Special Fund treasurer who could not be present.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes which were approved as read.

Allene Zwahr gave the financial report and Willie Mae Kuykendal gave the treasurer's report.

The Special Fund report was given by Benita Walzel and also the schedule of activities for the month at the hall. All of these reports were accepted as given.

President Charlie Matcek read the important message from the Supreme Lodge which was discussed.

Sister Stephanie Walzel is now residing at the Fort Bend Nursing Home at Rosenberg, so remember to drop by when you are in Rosenberg.

Brother John Blinka, who also resides at this home, had been sick but is feeling a lot better.

March 14 is the Workshop for our officers at Hallettsville; it always is informative.

Our chili supper February 10 was a great success and our thanks go to the ladies who prepared it It was delieious• andlhanks to all the ladies

Our yard at the hall needs redoing again and also the culvert at the entrance needs widening, so Brother Herbert Nowotny was appointed to check into this matter, as to what kind of material would be best to use and have it done.

Refund checks were handed out and the winner of the attendance prize was Sister Vlasta Hurta.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned and everyone enjoyed the "svacina" and visiting.

Report of Cottonwoodlodge No. 6 March Meeting (Next Meeting Is April 5) Dear headers: President Robert Dobecka called the meeting of Lodge No. 6 to order Sunday, March 1st at 2:30 p.m.

Theresa Dobecka and Keith Hykel led the members in the Pledge to the U.S. Flag. Theresa then recited the SPJST Pledge.

Roll call was answered by all the officers.

Brother Eddie Hykel reported twenty members and two visitors Steve Deitrich and Kenneth Brown present. We welcome them to come again.

Secretary Barbara Hykel read the minutes of the previous meeting.

They were approved as read.

Reports of the financial secretary and treasurer were heard and they were all in order.

Correspondence was also read from the Supreme Lodge.

Bar Chairman Alvin Schuetz gave his hall report.

Sister Schuetz gave the calendar of upcoming events. Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported that the youth members will visit the West Rest Home Wednesday, March 11th. She also gave a report on the February 13th bake sale, which was a great success. Two bake sales are planned before Easter so watch for future reports on these events. The youth will present a short Easter program Sunday, April 5th; then they will have an Easter egg hunt.

The youth club also held a clothes drive for a worthy charity. They are collecting cigarette packages and Campbell labels. A kite-flying contest was held after the meeting.

Delores Dobecka brought the cake.

Birthdays for the youngsters are Tammi and Kevin Dobecka.

Board of Trustees Chairman George Straten reported on the trustees' meeting. He announced the lodge members have been working inside and outside the lodge; more work is needed to be done, so everyone come help on weekends. He also stated that Brother Dobecka purchased five trees and those had been planted. Cabbage will again be purchased to be made into sauerkraut for the West Fest.

Brother Straten named the new officers for the 1981 trustees. They are: George Straten, chairman; Aubrey Uptmor, vice chairman; Robert Dobecka, secretarytreasurer; and Entertainment Committee consists of George Straten, Robert Dobecka, and Johnny Krizan.

Sister Lydia Dobecka reported on the Card Committee.

It was voted on to hold the Easter Party and Supper after the lodge meeting Sunday, April 5th; a fried chicken supper is planned, so everyone is asked to bring the rest of the trimmings.

A new member (juvenile) Joshua Aaron Hykel was admitted into the lodge. He is the grandson of Brother Alvin and Sister Willie Mae Schuetz.

The $10 progressive door prize was Susen Gene Svacek, the other $10 progressive door prize was Barbara Wachsmann, and the $2 progressive door prize was Jana Lou Janda; none of these were present.

News

Six hours of polka music entertained our guests from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday, February 28th with two bands playing to the content and jolly crowd moving in fast tempo to the sounds of polka tunes played by Joe Patek and Wence Shimek. Most of the guests came dressed in western attire this being rodeo week here in Houston. The Hosting Committee, in charge and holding the box office, were: Carlene Carlock and, of course, her husband, Ed with Bill Neskorik took care of the arriving guests while Pat Neskorik greeted the guests at the door. It was a full house.

Tables No. 7, 10 and 11 (surrounded by 30 friends) had three birthday celebrants in their midst.

They were Brothers Ben Schulte, Albert Zajicek and Lester Zappe. It is needless to say, they all had a jolly time surprising their three friends The ladies, as usual, brought all kinds of goodies and, naturally, not one, but two birthday cakes appeared with candles and all baked

by Bessie Vasula and Stephanie Schulte. "Happy Birthday" to all!

Brother Henry Chude and wife, Rosalie of Needville, Texas and members of Lodge No. 88 always patronize our lodge dances; this time with friends Fred and Carmen Gerstenberger and Bill and Allene Gerstenberger of Rosenberg, Texas.

The three couples enjoyed a juicy hamburger in our dining room before the dance, prepared by our faithful Sister Annie Vala.

Sorry to hear that Juanita Simons is in Methodist Hospital now, but we hope she will be home by the time this letter will be printed. Juanita and her husband, Orville serve on the Entertainment Committee.

Sunday afternoon, March 1, 1981, a lovely wedding shower was given to Cindy Wehring by friends, Helen Hegwood, Rosalee Kostom, Pat Neskorik, Laura Warnasch and Wanda Kennedy. There were 55 ladies present to honor the bride-tobe with the groom's mother, Mrs. Wanda Wheeler and her mother, Edna Wehring, and six beautiful maidens in attendance to the bride: two of her sisters, Linda and Debbie Wehring, Jode Bennett, Debbie Shaw, Vicky Hegwood and Debbie Wear and, of course, the groom, Mark Wheeler was at the side of his bride. The seating arrangement was very unique. The guests were comfortably seated around tables in the spacious dining room while the bride opened the gifts and the young ladies displayed them on two long tables set against the wall in the Red Room and the buffet table was placed under the mirror wall with a spring flower arrangement in the center and delicious food; also all through the opening of gifts, a wine cooler was served to the ladies. The elaborate. _church, wedding„ is scheduled for April 10th.

Rodeo week here in Houston is an annual affair. Friday several trailriders from all directions congregated in Memorial Park to prepare for the two-hour Rodeo Parade Saturday morning in downtown Houston. Dr. John D. Jerabeck, member on the Board of Directors of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, has been a member since 1955 and was in the Rodeo Parade with other officials of the show. Dr. Jerabeck will ride in the Grand Entry prior to every rodeo performance in the Astrodome. It is noteworthy to mention, that Dr. John D. Jerabeck is one of the nine doctors and two nurses who make up the Health Committee of the Livestock Show. They provide free medical service to all the 4H and FFA youngsters, their parents and, agriculture teachers who come from all over Texas to participate in the Junior Livestock Show. Each doctor donates his time for one day during the week. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the only livestock show that provides this service and Dr. John D. Jerabeck is responsible for starting this service.

With sorrow in our hearts, we bid farewell to Brother Orlando Richards who passed away 27 February 1981, at the age of 62 years. A veteran of WWII and Houston resident for 42 years, Orlando is survived by his wife, Era Lee Richards; two daughters, Melva Ann Kersten and Carolyn Gayle Higginbotham; a son, Kenneth Lee Richards; ten grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. Services were held at 12 noon Monday, March 2, in the Brookside Chapel with Rev. Harvey McCreary officiating. He was laid to rest in Brookside Memorial Park.

We will miss Orlando; he, with his spouse, Era were active on the Entertainment Committee for many years. To the family we express our sincere sympathy.

The members of the Hlahol Dramatic Club are in the process of rehearsing the English Play entitled, "HOT WATER" to be presented in the near future. More on this will be revealed later.

Remember: Sunday, March 22, we will have a delicious "Fish Fry".

Outside on our picnic grounds; we will have the Czech Concert Orchestra to entertain you from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Gazebo and, if you want, you may dance around the Gazebo. At 3 p.m., a FREE program will be a Czech one-act play and a Czech documentary film, so come out and enjoy a lovely Sunday.

Lodge No. 176, Houston Northwest Sets Meeting Dates Dear Members: The annual meeting of Lodge 176 was held February 16, 1981 at the Western Room of the Long Point National Bank in Spring Branch.

The meeting was very interesting and all the reports were very good.

Two of our members are very young, one being the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Schulz and the other one the grandson of mine.

The officers for 1981 were installed by Sister Ruth Moore.

They are: President - Evelyn Mikeska, Vice-President - Harold Schultz, Treasurer - Milton Trammell, Secretary - Brenda Pike, Fin. Secretary - Steve Duyka and Reporter - Edna Voldan.

Rachel Stutts and Clemmie Trammell are on the Telephone Committee. I am sure you will be hearing from these nice members.

Our meeting for 1981 will be easy to remember, as they will be the months that have 5 Mondays. They are March 30, June 29, August 31, and November 30.

The members will be receiving letters and calls during the year and let us all try to attend our meetings.

It is so nice to find a lodge near by since I have moved so far out. I am hoping I will get to meet more of the members.

Golden Anniversary Observed Mr. and Mrs. Wilton Chaloupka celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with more than 300 friends and relatives on Sunday, November 9.

The setting was the Cooks Point Brethren Church, as was the scene 50 years earlier when Libby Drgac became the bride of Wilton Chaloupka.

Members of the bridal party joining them were Mrs. Frank (Milady Drgac) Kubena, Mrs. Robert (Tracy Chaloupka) Wine, Mrs. Rudolph (Elizabeth Drgac) Luksa, Mrs. Carroll (Evelyn Mrnustik) Henry and Frank Drgac. Mr. Edward Chaloupka, Mr. Rudolph Luksa and Mrs. William (Delores Manas) Humphrey (all deceased) were attendants of the couple 50 years ago.

The day of their anniversary began by attending church services.

Wednesday, March 11, 1981 -- VESTNiK/9 Before the services began the couple and their attendants marched in and were seated at the front of the church.

They were honored with a duet by two nieces, Mrs. Beverly Mahlmann and Virginia Kubin. Mrs. Patsy Albright accompanied them for "How Great Thou Art". At the request of the Chaloupka's, the church choir sang "What A Day." Rev. Norman Haisler's sermon was on the family - a very fitting tribute to the couple. Even though they weren't blessed with children, their lives have centered around the youth in the area.

After the services, a delicious barbecue luncheon was served.

The head table, covered with a gold tablecloth was decorated with a centerpiece of yellow roses, gold candles and the groom's cake. The theme was carried out throughout the Fellowship Hall. Gold bells were hung and accented the tables, one of which held a Norfork Pine with gold ribbons and held monetary gifts from many guests. Mr. and Mrs. Chaloupka requested no gifts but were surprized with donations which allowed them to purchase a mahogany grandfather clock.

Seated with Mr. and Mrs. Chaloupka were members of the wedding party. Adjoining tables were set for couples that they sponsored during baptismal rites.

The bride's cake was three tier, accented with live chrysthemums, a miniature bride and groom, and "50" centered among white doves. The cake was cut by Mrs. Bernice Hronek and Mrs. Virginia Kubin.

For the anniversary Mrs. Chaloupka wore a floor length deep rose dress. Mr. Chaloupka chose a deep blue suit. They wore matching corsage and boutonniere.

Mrs. Lorene Bosmann of College Station registered the guests.

Mr. and Mrs. Chaloupka have lived their entire lives in Burleson County, 46 years in the Cooks Point community and were co-owners of the Cooks Point Store for 36 years.

Though we have no public school classes, our Community Colleges offer Conversational Czech in terms of ten weeks each. These are noncredit courses.

Spring Branch CC-instructor Charles Heyda, has two evening classes per week enrolling 16 students.

Alvin CC-instructor Radomir Skacel, conducts a class of eight which meets every other week for a three hour session.

Lamar CC-instructor Radomir Skacel, has 15 enrollees meeting every other week for three hours.

San Jacinto CC-Bernard Orsak instructor (according to information received) has a tremendous enrollment in two summer sessions, and two each in each of the regular school sessions. The enrollment is 10 or 12.

University of Houston, W.E. Souchek, instructor, is conducting a second-year study with 18 enrolled in the three-credit-hour class.

The bride's chosen colors of cotillian blue and white were carried out in the decoration of the church and the parish hall where a supper was served to the guests after the ceremony.

The bride is a 1977 graduate of Wall High School and attended Angelo State University. Prior to her marriage she was employed by

General Telephone Company. She and members of her family are all members of SPJST Lodge 160.

A 1973 graduate of Blackwell High School, the bridegroom graduated from Texas A&M University in 1977, with a bachelor of science degree. He is the owner of CKC Inc. Oil Field Construction.

Following a wedding trip to Guatemala City, Guatemala, the couple is living in San Angelo.

Sacred Heart Cathedral in San Angelo was the settng on February 21st for the wedding of Cheryl Ann Pelzel of San Angelo and Rickey Gene Conradt of Blackwell; officiating was the Rev. Frederick Nawarskas.

Mr. and Mrs. Louis Pelzel, Jr. of San Angelo are the parents of the bride. The groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Joe Conradt of Blackwell.

Linda Pelzel of San Angelo was her sister's maid of honor. Stacy Smedley of Blackwell served as flower girl. Bridesmaids were Janet Lisso of Blackwell, (sister of the groom) Brenda Biedermann of Paint Rock, Susan Copenhaver of San Angelo and Jan Hohensee of Wall.

Garnets

Among the many different kinds of jewels, such as diamonds, pearls, and precious stones, the Bohemian Garnet has enjoyed for centuries a unique position.

Modern science acknowledges the existence of about three thousand different minerals. This huge family includes also various types of garnets ranging in color from red, yellow, brown and black. They can be found at many different places in the world. However, not all of them are suitable for further processing as jewels. One of the rare types, possessing the never changing color of a drop of blood, is known after the most famous finding place as the Bohemian Garnet.

Bohemian garnets must be looked for in eruptive minerals produced by nature as a memento of the once fiery magma deep inside the earth.

Millions of years ago, the highly intensive volcanic activities in the Ceske Stredohori (mountain range) created the well known deposits of pyropes, the famed deep-red garnets found in the area. Their age is estimated at 25 million years.

Nobody knows exactly when the first garnets were discovered, but onevthing is absolutely sure - it must have happened many centuries ago.

The oldest preserved work of art decorated with garnets is the Bohemian Cross of King Premysl Otakar II (13th century).

NEWSBRIEFS The VIIIth annual conference of Czech Students and Teachers is scheduled to be held at SPJST Hall No. 29 east of Taylor on Saturday, April 25th. This conference has been, and will again be, sponsored by the Czech Club at the University of Texas, according to George Petrek, Czech Club president. In addition to students of Czech and teachers of that language, the general public is invited, especially those interested in promoting and preserving Czech language instruction at various levels throughout the state. ATTENTION, ALL YOUTH LEADERS! Dear Youth Leaders, It's that time again! The quarterly reports will be due on March 15. I would like to turn in a report that does not have any "No Reports" listed. Even though your youth club may be too small to be eligible to receive a reimbursement check, it is much better to show that your youth club was not eligible than to not turn in a report. The members of your lodge will then know that you have done your part by sending in a report. For those of you who have sent in your reports early, thank you!

These quarterly reports are important to me and to your District Youth Counselors. They tell us that you are having your meetings, the activities that take place within the youth clubs, and how many youth are attending these functions. After ail, it may mean a few dollars to your

AS ALWAYS, THIS RETREAT IS FOR YOUTH LEADERS, ASSISTANTS, AND DYC'S AND THEIR ASSISTANTS. This program is certainly a must for youth leaders who have not been in the Youth Program very long or if they have not been able to attend many of the district training classes.

Make plans to attend this retreat. We are going to have something a little different this year. Rather than telling you all the details now, we'd simply like to encourage you to attend. You're bound to learn something new, as well as gaining an insight on attitudes of our young people. If you're involved with our youth in lodges/districts then it behooves you to "give it all you've got". We can offer something very similar to the training programs offered by other organizations and at less cost. If they can do it, so can we. President Morris and I have been working closely on all aspects of how to improve phases of our Youth Program. He, 1, and the Supreme Lodge are dedicated to the youth and all of us extend a special invitation to all of you to make plans to attend this retreat. You will miss a lot and we will miss you if you are not there. Soon I will be sending out information, registration and a map about this Youth Leaders' Retreat.

We hope to see all of you there.

Remember, your mileage and meals will be paid, at the rate of 34C a mile for the owner of the car only. We ask that you 'car pool' as much as possible — as many persons from the same area riding in one car as possible.

This retreat is designed primarily for the adults. There will be no accommodations or any activities planned for our youth. Their time will come later at summer camp and other functions planned for them in the districts. This is a learning process away from your every day responsibilities and routines. We think you will enjoy it. Please don't forget to bring your bedding, comfortable shoes and clothing, and personal toilet articles. There will be separate cabins for the men and ladies. We don't know exactly what the weather will be at the time, so you might be wise to include some sort of cover (blanket, quilt, or other). We will view, listen, share, and gain knowledge.

This reminder is early because I was out of the office most of last week, however, I feel that any activities planned for the youth clubs have taken place by now. Send me your quarterly reports today before it slips your mind. Let your lodge know that your youth are active. *** If you plan on attending this retreat (and we certainly hope you do), please let us know in writing or by phone no later than Monday, March 30th. In this way, we can let the camp director know how many to expect, both for the purposes of living accommodations and meals.

From The District Youth Counselors PLANS FINALIZED FOR DISTRICT II SPRING MEETING The District II spring meeting will be held at Lodge No. 47, Seaton Star Hall Sunday, March 15, beginning at 2 p.m. with the meeting after the normal schedule.

A short youth program is being planned with participation from most lodges. A cake auction is planned with each lodge being allowed two items to be auctioned off. The proceeds of this auction go to these youth clubs that bring the items, so let's plan to buy these items and help the clubs. The youth clubs will also be allowed to sell any other crafts or pastries that they may bring and they need your support on the purchase of these items.

There will be a break at about 3:30 or 4 p.m. The plans are for the meeting to be over at about 5:30 p.m. at which time Lodge No. 47 is preparing a sausage supper plate including sweets for a very reasonable price of $2 per plate so we hope you will plan to stay for the meal and fellowship following the meeting.

This meeting includes the recognition of 50-year members and the election of District II officers and reports of officrs, director, rest home director and reports from the Supreme Lodge, attorney and editor. The district secretary has a complete schedule of this meeting in her letter so I will not repeat it.

The officers of District II invite the Supreme Lodge officers, attorney, editor and their wives plus all members of District II to attend this meeting and help us to make plans on how to improve the growth of the SPJST and to keep the familytype fraternal spirit and fellowship together; it seems to be slowly fading, especially in the younger/ middle-aged families and we must try to encourage them to come back to join the fellowship of our , meaitigs 'anti 'socials which 'half& been

going on for over 75 years.

Yvonne Kresta called the meeting to order. Rudy Laitkep led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Marjorie Treurner said the prayer.

We discussed the District VI meeting, which will be held in Hillje • on March 29th.

We also honored our birthday celebrants, they are Vicki Dorotik and Chris Krpec.

We played musical chairs and made craft. Afterward, we had refreshments which consisted of chips, cake and punch.

already done so. Remember, you do not turn in your baked items until Friday.

Thursday, we will have a Work Day at 6:30 p.m. at the hall. Please come and help.

Another reminder: The chili supper will be held March 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the hall and everyone is invited, so come for some fun and support the youth of Lodge No. 47.

SEVERAL FUNCTIONS FINALIZED BY COTTONWOOD LODGE NO 6 YOUTH Dear Readers, It was discussed at our youth meeting that we will hold two bake sales. The dates have been set for Friday, March 13 and April 17 at the Leroy Bank. Everyone is asked to donate to this bake sale and come out and work.

We held a kite-flying contest. We also had a contest on the prettiest, oddest, best homemade, smallest flying, highest flying, and homemade that flew. There were very few that were able to fly because there was very little wind.

Plans are also made to hold a Tupperware Party in the near future.

We played games and had a Valentine card contest. The first game Terri Mekush won it, so she received a box of candy. The next game we played, we had to find hearts and Jenny Marek won this one.

Then we had a homemade Valentine card contest and Donald Marek won in the Junior division and Frances McDonald won in the Senior division.

Next, we guessed how many candies were in a dish and Terri Mekush won it.

We had refreshments and later we all went home.

The District I meeting will be held at Dime Box April 26th. A skit will be presented by the youth; the youth club meeting has also been moved to this date.

April 5th, the youngsters will sing at a rest home. Everyone is encouraged to participate.

Attending the meeting were thirty-four members, thirteen adults and four visitors.

Door prizes were won by Kim Abshire, Aaron Herbey and Stacy Snell.

ENJOYABLE ACTIVITIES CONTINUE BY ROBSTOWN LODGE NO 117 YOUTH Dear Members: February 14th, the Robstown Youth Club held their Valentine Party at the Scout Hut. The room was brightly colored with red and white hearts and streamers. We played a game called "Search and Find." The winner of that game was Jenny Marek and we also played a game similar to musical chairs; the difference was that there was a heart on the chair and you had to have the heart, if you had a chair but not a heart you were out. Terri Mekush was the winner of that game.

We also had a Valentine card contest. The winners were Donald Marek in the Junior division and Frances McDonald in the Senior division. We guessed how many candies were in the dish and Terri Mekush won it. All the winners received a box of candy for each game they won.

Afterwards we had refreshments and danced some and then we all went home.

Under new business we discussed the Rodeo and the District V meeting which will be March 8th, at Needville.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden No. 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Texaska Orlice Lodge No. 13, Dime Box, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister MARY ALBINA TYDLACKA, who passed away Wednesday, February 4, 1981, at the Leisure Lodge Nursing Center, Caldwell, Texas, where she had been a resident since January 8, 1981.

She was born on April 18, 1905, in Lee County, Texas. Her parents were the late Joseph and Annie (Kolar) Koudelka. She lived in Lee County and Dime Box most of her life.

She was married to Frank J. Tydlacka on October 28, 1924, at Dime Box, who preceded her in death on May 3, 1975. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and very active in her church and also the Altar Society.

She was also interested in her flowers, gardening, her children and grandchildren. She was known to so many as "Grandma T".

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Frank, Jr. who passed away on July 20, 1979; one daughter, Mrs. Georgia Spacek who passed away on May 16, 1973, two brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Olga Sukup of Georgetown; one brother, Charles Koudelka of Caldwell; and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Tydlaeka of Dime Box; also, nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Rosary was recited by Father Isidore Rozycki at the Phillips Luckey Funeral Chapel in Caldwell at 8 p.m. on February 4.

Funeral mass for Sister Tydlacka was held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 5, in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dime Box with Father Isidore officiating.

Interment was at the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, -Adrian Tydlacka, Glenn Tydlacka, James Spacek, Dennis Mikulin, Bruce Cowen, Frankie J. Tydlacka, Kevin Sukup and one nephew, Arnold J. Tydlacka.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace.

JOSEPH GAIDUSEK,

of West, Texas who died Saturday, February 7, 1981 at,the age of 78.

Rosary was recited Sunday, February 8 at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was performed by Reverend George Doskocil at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in West, Monday, February 9, 1981.

Brother Gaidusek was a retired dairy farmer and a lifetime resident of West. He was married to Marie Zatopek who died June 6, 1980.

Survivors include two sons, Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr. of 5218 Loch Lomond, Waco, Texas and Bernard Gaidusek of 125 Oak in Bellmead; one daughter, Clara Mae Farmer of Arlington, Texas; fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Brother Joe was loved by all and will be missed by each of us who knew him for these many years. He had been a member of Lodge 66 since January, 1922. He was presented his 50-year membership pin nine years ago.

Texas, died February 18, 1981 in Gulf Coast Medical Hospital at Wharton.

Brother Morris was born October 10, 1910 near Waco to John and Frances Morris. He was employed with Jefferson Lake Sulphur Company at Long Point, Texas for 30 years and retired 7 years ago.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge No 148, Blessing.

Survivors include his wife, Mary (Vasek) Morris; one sister, Betty Kana of Palacious; two brothers, Alvin Morris of Lake Village, Arkansas, Emil Morris of Blessing; and many nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 21 at St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Damon, with Rev. Gilbert Pekar officiating. Interment was held at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Blessing, with Rev. Jerome Styrk officiating at the graveside service.

Pallbearers were Larry Morris, Laddie Vacek, Leroy Vasek, Johnnie Morris, Edward Kana and Joe Kana.
