Senator Lloyd Bentsen Appoints Brent Hrncir to US Air Force Academy

Brent Rudolph Hrncir, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hrncir of 10610 Stonewall, Corpus Christi, has recently been advised that he has re ceived an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy, Class of 1985. The appointment followed a nomination by Senator Lloyd Bentsen, of Texas. Brent will begin the Academy's summer program June 22nd when he begins the demanding Basic Cadet Training. The Academy is :ocated in the rampart range of the Rocky Mountains, north of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Senator Bentsen said that he received over 900 applicants for two vacancies he had at the Air Force Academy. After reviewing in depth the qualifications of each applicant, he nominated ten boys to fill each slot. The Academy's Admissions Board of Review made the final selection and notified each recipient last'week. Lt. Gen. K. L. Tallman, Supt. of the Academy wrote Brent: "I am pleased to offer you an appointment to the US Air Force Academy as a member of the Class of 1985. Congratulations! This appointment is the first step toward, a challenging and rewarding career as a professional Air Force officer. The results of your medical examination indicate that you are qualified for flying training as a. pilot. You may take justifiable pride, Brent, in having competed successfully with some of the finest young people in the United States. I compliment you on an excellent record of achievement and look forward to welcoming you to the Cadet Wing." Brent was born in Robstown July 13, 1963, the third child in a family of four. He entered the Tuloso-Midway Schools in the seventh grade and will graduate in May, the fourth in his class with a grade average of 95.5. In school, he has served on the Student Council 4 years, as Science Club president, was editor of the school Literary magazine, was a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Club. In Band, he was a State qualifier in the UIL Solo/Ensemble contest, and received a superior rating in the UIL Men's Trio in 1979. He was in the UIL One-Act play and was awar ded "Outstanding Supporting Actor of the Year in 1978. In Athletics, he has been in Track

for 4 years, and has received two Varsity letters in Cross-Country. He won second place (under 20 years) in the 1979 Bayfest Marathon and qualified for the Boston Marathon. He has three Varsity letters in Basketball and played football for 3 years. He is a member of Jackson-Woods Presbyterian Church, sings in the Chancel Choir, has been active in the church Youth Fellowship and was a representative to the Regional Youth Council. He holds the Eagle Rank in Scouting and has served as Junior Assistant Scout Master, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, and Scribe. Brent is a member of Lodge No. 117, Robstown and has been a member of its Youth Club for 10 years. He was an SPJST State Craft winner for 2 years, State Talent winner for 4 years, and was a cornet soloist at the Texas Fraternal Congress for 3 years. He was first runner-up in the State Youth Club Royalty contest last September. He has attended summer camp each year and was named "Outstanding Boy Camper" in 1977. Brent's appointment to the Air Force Academy follows in the footsteps of his older brother, David, who graduated from the Academy in 1976 and received a scholarship to attend Southwestern Medical School in Dallas where he graduated in 1980. David received various honors while a cadet at the AFA and graduated 13th in a Class of 919. He is now completing his residency at Travis Air Force Base in California, (Continued on Page 8)
