Your editor visited the SPJST Museum, recently, and took some pictures of the Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) (not in that order because Brother Otto Hanus, our curator, generally gives the visitors a tour in reverse). When we were there, Mrs. Thelma Bartosh, Brother Otto Hanus' assistant was present because it was in the afternoon and he had other business. He certainly has put in many 15-18 hour days to get done what has been accomplished. Sunday, February 15th, at the Lodge No. 66, Waco meeting, we discussed with him the LAM Department and what had been done. We will try to have the photos in this issue if possible; if not, then as space permits and will try to give you a "picture tour" as Brother Hanus described it to yours truly.

Our members and readers need to visit the entire department; it is something to see and enjoy! It is a valuable part of our SPJST Society!

Fraternal societies in general are privileged in the sense they do not pay taxes to operate as non-profit organizations. This is as it should be because the fraternals render far more to community service, and, as adjuncts to charity, than those who would challenge their tax-exempt status.

The cry of the latter, however, grows every year and it should behoove all fraternal society members to guard against any pitfalls which might endanger their exempt status.

The Tax Reform Acts have been good examples of what is happening.

They should be especially alert to see that their organizations: 1) Hold regular monthly meetings where a collection of dues is taken up; 2) Continue welfare activities; 3) Promote charity endeavors.

Since most all the fraternals center their activities around the latter two, we will discuss only the first.

"The moment we stop holding monthly meetings," wrote an officer of another fraternal, "the moment we stop collecting dues from the lodges members, we shall start losing our tax-exempt status."

He recognized the fact that many meetings are poorly-attended, but he urged the lodge officers to take the "bull by the horns" and go about conducting interesting meetings so that many more members will want to attend and participate in discussions for the welfare of the lodge.

"Let's stop crying about lack of interest among our younger members," he urged. "Let's start holding interesting monthly meetings geared to the times and the young will want to join us in building a bigger and a greater organization." *** An early American critic once said: "Accurate knowledge is the basis of correct opinions; the want of it makes the opinion of most people of little value." Let this not be said of you, young people. You have been well-educated and you have good minds. Most of you, who have reached sufficient age, to do so, will go from school to exciting careers and interests. No matter what they are — no matter how diverse and varied — you will all share a responsibility for the society in which you live. This is an obligation that can only be met if you are wellinformed and vitally interested in, and yes, a little bit skeptical, of the things about you. Ask questions and listen carefully to the answers.

Trust your judgment. If you do only this, you will have repaid the faith, love and trust of your parents and your school.

*** More frequently, as time goes on, people are complaining that there isn't any leisure time, but actually the opposite is definitely true. We have been gaining more freedom right along from occupational duties, and the housewife has it easier than her mother. Leisure is made up of spare hours, and, like spare money, must be spent wisely if any is to be left. There is plenty of leisure, but we are inclined to be reckless in our use of it. In building up all the extra activities for our diversion and social development, we should estimate in advance the eventual cost in time of each undertaking to the end that we shall have a margin PLEASE NOTICE! of spare hours and minutes, instead We have saved copies of our Vestnik of being late for an appointment, or of past issues in single weekly copies getting there ahead of time and that dating to 1975 or earlier and have gives us time to spare — which is them available for our members and leisure. With calm forethought our readers if you desire them, because life is not like that of a hunted, we did not want to destroy them. SCHEDULE OFFICERS' WORKSHOPS 1981 PRESIDENTS AND VICE PRESIDENTS, SECRETARIES, FINANCIAL SECRETARIES, AND TREASURERS

Lodge Officers' Workshops 1981

Saturday, March 14 Hallettsville High School

To All Concerned: Based on precedence and recent actions of the Supreme Lodge, the following will be in effect for the workshops in 1981: 1) Officers will be those as before, including the lodge treasurer, or some other person designated by the lodge.

2) Sections will include lodge presidents and vice presidents in one section, lodge secretaries in another, and financial secretaries in another. The treasurers may attend any or all of the three sections, moving to them only at the start of the sessions or during the breaks.

3) Mileage for one car only from each lodge, $.30 a mile, however, if one of the locations is not convenient for the officers of a particular lodge on the date scheduled, they may attend the workshops at one of the other locations, but mileage would still be paid for only one car from each lodge at any one of the three locations. Anyone else wishing to attend these workshops, other than mentioned here, is welcome to do so, furnishing their own transportation.

These workshops held in previous years were proven to be mutually beneficial. They will deal primarily with lodge procedures and administration. We are not including workshops on youth work or insurance per se, since these two areas are adequately covered in district and state seminars and training classes.

We must remember that our national and state laws define a Fraternal Benefit Society as "Having a lodge system with ritualistic work."

The more efficient our lodges are, the better we are insuring and guaranteeing our future as a Fraternal Benefit Society. The United States Internal Revenue Code specifies two primary requisites for a Fraternal Benefit Society: "a) Must operate on the lodge system, and b) Provide for the payment of life, sick, accident or other benefits to members or their dependents." Thus we see the specific reference to a "lodge system" and it is through the lodge system that we must operate and improve our services. It behooves every officer mentioned above to attend these workshops as a part of his duty and obligation in being an officer in the local lodge, and especially since we will be operating under the amended by-laws of the XXIII Convention. We will all learn through these workshops. In the meantime, we would welcome suggestions that any of you might have about what topic or topics to include in any of the sections at the workshops in 1981. Those of you out in the field and on the local lodge level may have some definite ideas as to what needs discussing. If you do, let us know.

March 8th Meeting Slated for Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities (Free Dance February 28th) Dear Members: The regular monthly lodge meeting was held Sunday, February 8, with a small attendance.

President B. J. Hlavaty presided over the meeting and Nancy Hlavaty led the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

The secretary and 2nd vicepresident were absent.

The minutes were not available from our previous meeting. These minutes will need to be read at our next meeting in March.

Treasurer Inez Greenlees gave a report of the financial status of the lodge.

4/V2STNiK — Wednesday, February 25, 1981 report and the amount of lodge dues collected for 1980. Several members with paidup insurance policies are delinquent in paying their yearly lodge dues. Paidup members applies to insurance premiums only on their policies. If you happen to be one of these fortunate people with a paidup policy, check to see if you have paid your $3 a year lodge dues.

We welcome another new member, Bennie Mae Pustejovsky.

She has already proven to be an asset to the lodge as a faithful worker in the kitchen. We are proud of you, Bennie.

On the sick list are: Iris Morrisson and Eloma Emerick. We want to send them our get-well wishes.

Shirley Karasek had surgery on her wrist last week and is now at home.

We want to wish her a speedy recovery. Albert Greenlees is also in the hospital for tests and we hope his stay will be a short one.

Our condolences go out to the Rudy Rejcek family on the loss of his father, John Rejcek.

Business discussed pertained to lodge dances. The different types, bands, dates and advertisements.

There were many good ideas discussed and we will be trying out some of these ideas and suggestions as time permits.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, March 8, at 6:30 p.m. Please try and attend.

We will have a "free" dance Saturday, February 28 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The music will be country/western and be provided by "Yesterday's Wine." Lodge No. 24, Cyclone Donates to Volunteer Fire Dept.

Dear Members, Our meeting was called to order

by Pres. Dan Sebek.

The flag was presented by Neal Hoelscher and Alan Haisler. We then remained standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members.

On our sick list we have Sister LaVerne Cabla who had surgery, Bro. Wayne Psencik who was in the hospital with a virus, and Youth John Hoelscher who had minor surgery. To them, and any member who may be ill, we wish them a speedy recovery.

We were glad to have a visitor: SL Vice President Bernie Gebala.

We then went into our business with reading of the minutes by Secretary Nelda Marek. The president read a letter from the Supreme Lodge which was something for us to consider for the good of our lodge and Order.

Thanks went out to Sister Norma Andel for making the sign for our dress policy which we put in the entrance of the hall.

Bro. Adolph Luksa volunteered to cut the grass this year.

We discussed the workshop for

our officers which will be held March 2e1 at Taylor Lodge No. 29.

Our president encouraged all officers to go. He stated that the Supreme Lodge would pay for mileage on one car and, if our lodge could pay for additional cars, that others who use their cars so we could have a good attendaqce and it passed.

We decided to give $200 to the Rogers Volunteer Fire Dept. This is a good cause for we have at least two members who had fires and the fire fighters responded. It is a good feeling to know that, if we need them, they are there to help.

We now have our new camera and, since Sister Louise Zavodny will be taking the pictures, the members voted to let her be in charge of keeping it. She will bring it to the meeting and special doings so it will always be available at all times to take pictures.

SL Vice-Pres. Bernie Gebala asked if we would like to have the District II Sales Representatives' banquet at our lodge this year, and the membership voted to hold it at our lodge and the date will be announced later.

New members were presented by Financial Secretary Doris Svoboda.

They were Leonard Doskocil sold by Sales Representative Nelda Marek, Margaret Mikeska, Keith Mikeska, Jeffrey Mikeska, and Pamela Mikeska sold by Sales Representative Louise Zavodny, Ronald Kaulfus, and Jeffrey Lesikar. We welcome all of you and hope to see you at our meetings.

Our Youth Leader Kelli Andel gave us a report on our youth and their activities: refer to the Youth Section and read the letter from the youth reporter for their news.

A special happy birthday goes to Bro. John C. Stepan who had a birthday on Feb. 8. We recently honored him at our lodge for he outlived his policy. He now lives in Shiner, Texas. Many more years, Bro. John.

Present at the meeting, was Bro. Billy Smetanka. Having an anniversary, who was present at the meeting, was our Ass't. Youth Leader Carol Chervenka; to her and her husband, Johnny, and any members who may be celebrating these occasions this month "best wishes."

Door prizes were won by Bill Sebek, Gladys Tyroch, Neal Hoelscher, and Denice Posvar.

Our next meeting will be held Wed., Mar. 11 at 7:30 p.m. We will have eats after the meeting which the social committee will provide and the ladies are asked to bring sweets. Let's all come out,and plan our lodge business and then enjoy fellowship.

Lodge No. 88, Houston — February Meeting Report President Mildred Holeman called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

Flag Bearer Lynn Pflughaupt presented the colors and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which, the members stood in silent tribute for departed member John Russell Slusher.

Secretary Hejl read the December and January minutes; they were approved as read with a minor correction in the January minutes.

Secretary Hejl then read a letter from the Supreme Lodge which had information for all members.

Treasurer Marie Hampton gave her report.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Joyce Russell reported tickets are being sold on a Valentine box of candy.

Sunshine Committee reported get-well cards were sent to Sister Mydell Grochoske, Celia Janke and Martha Pustejovsky and, if there are others ill, we want to wish everyone a speedy recovery.

Secretary Hejl gave the Board of Trustees' report which was good; our dances are being well-attended and we hope they continue. He explained the policies on hall operations and they will be posted on the Bulletin Board for all members to read.

After a lengthy discussion about funds for the Entertainment Com mittee to have for activity for lodge members, it was decided they would be able to get the money they needed from Secretary Marie Hampton.

President Barabas brought the subject of paving our parking lots (which we need badly) and funds will be needed.

Suggestions were made to raise extra money; one was to make a donation to a kitty each time someone has a birthday or anniversary.

Another was that anyone using bad words has to pay and Brother Joe Hurtik is in charge of that one.

That would be a start.

I was asked to remind members to pay their dues (if they haven't already) so that you can get your cards and take advantage of the free dance ticket.

We congratulated Vice-President Jess Taylor and his wife, Shirley, on becoming grandparents. Their daughter Shelley had twin girls; also congratulations are in order for Gordon and Jan Cox who have a new baby boy.

Brother Herbert Janke won the door prize and it was nice to see Sister Celia Janke with us, she was in the hospital during our last meeting.

We want to express our sympathy to the family of Margie Picha; she passed away this week. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, March 8 at 2:30 p.m. with a covered dish supper after the meeting. It -SPJSTwould be nice if we could have a good attendance; the weather should be warmer by then.

The Entertainment Committee has planned to have games after the meal: dominoes, cards or what anyone wishes to play. It would be a lot of fun.

Our visitor for the meeting was Mrs. Florence Cercone of Dallas.

Secretary Clara Broz read the minutes of the January meeting which were approved as read; after reading a list of 21 applications of insurance and 2 transfers, made a motion to accept them as read, seconded by Brother Louis Hanus and carried. She then read the correspondence which included a letter from the Supreme Lodge.

Youth Leader Joyce Mynar reported on the Youth Club meeting and activities for the month and thanked Mrs. Laverine Ball, grandmother of John Parker, for donating the cost of bowling for the youths' outing.

Sister Naomi Spencer reported for the Historian stating that the Lodge History Book was now being typed.

For the Entertainment Committee Co-Chairman Homer Alexander reported the dances for February and the coming of the Al Pierson Band 3/7/81.

Sister Pearl Hanka announced that, for the next Birthday Club meeting, she has invited a Mrs. Matkins of the Northwest Memorial Hospital Volunteers to speak. Sister Mary Kosut reported 237 1/2 hours having been donated by the ladies of the lodge as volunteer work at the hospital the last three months.

Brother Tim Kostom announced that a Czech Play would be held 3/22/81 instead of the English Play which will be held later in the year.

District Director Louis Hanus spoke of the completion of the Supreme Lodge Museum and described how beautiful it is.

District President Norval Crossman reminded everyone of the District V Meeting in Needville 3/8/81 with election of officers, dinner and free dance and reported that Brother Alvin Sefcik had had an operation and was doing well.

Reported sick were Frances Olexa, Joe Fusig, Orlando Richards, Shirley High and Vlasta Stasta.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported 140 members present and "Happy Birthday" was sung to members having birthdays in February and a list of anniversaries was read. Door prize winners were Frances Crossman, Mr. Pokorny, Henry Knapick and Leander Pflughaupt.

Refreshment donors were Steve and Estelle Kelly and Bennie and Stacie Kocich in honor of their anniversaries.

Sisters Enjoy Sightseeing in New York Mrs. Emily Stuteville of Rogers, Ruby Bolton of Temple and Gene E. Browning, formerly of Hearne, Texas and now of Washington, D.C., were guests of Gene E. Mikeska of Big Springs, Texas and New York, 800 5th Ave., for the hostage Ticker Tape Parade.

While in New York they visited the World. Trade Center, Empire State Bldg., Metropolitan Museum, attended church at St. Patrick Cathedral and took a subway ride to Times Square.

They attended the Wintergarden Theatre and saw "42nd Street" and had refreshments at the "Tops of the Six's Club". They dined at the Windows of the World Restaurant at the same time Sen. John Warner and Liz Taylor were dining. They had dinner at Regine's and disco'd at the Famous "Xenon's".

On their last night in New York they were, entertained in "Texas Style" at the "Lone Star Cafe". They had an enjoyable time and are ready to go back again.

Before and after their trip to New York they visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Don Vrba in Houston.

Lodge No. 133,

San Antonio Reports on February Meeting Lodge No. 133, San Antonio held their regular meeting at the hall located at 1505 S. Gevers St. Sunday, February 15. The meeting was opened by President Emil Matula, leading the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes, read by Secretary Netek, were approved as read; also the treasurer's report, given by Sister Viola Mazac, was accepted as read.

All officers were present. The sick report was given. Sister Marcella Kleprlik reported that Bro. Jerry Kleprlik, who is confined to the Nix Hospital, is doing much better, but much more time is needed before he returns home. He did send word that he appreciates the many visits from members, and also the many phone calls. We missed you at the meeting, Jarko; we do hope that you will soon be at home where your private nurse (Marcella Kleprlik) will take good care of you. Bro. Ed. Holly was also a patient at the Santa Rosa Hospital; he had a complete physical taken, and some medications and he is now at home. Sister Strobel and Sister Harbort are also doing much better.

The meeting that will be held during the coming month March 15, at 1505 S. Gevers St. will begin as follows: We will have a dinner for all members which will be served at 12:30 p.m. The lodge will furnish all the meats, etc.; we ask the members to bring enough (sweets) kolaches, or whatever they wish. After the dinner, the meeting will begin at 2 p.m. We urge all members who have not indicated that they are coming, to PLEASE call President Matula at 333-7460, Sister Kalmus at 341-8394 or Sister Kleprlik at 736-6454. We must know how much food to order, so let us be fraternal, come out and enjoy a good dinner and also enjoy being with your fraternal sisters and brothers. It is always good to see anyone who is a member at the meetings, even though you have not attended meetings regularly; you are most welcome and we want you to come! We need you as much as you need us, so come out and have a good time Some time during the month of May, the membership voted to

charter a bus, and make a trip to Temple to our Supreme Lodge Headquarters to the Museum and also to stop in Taylor and visit our fraternal sisters and brothers at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home. Brother Hanus, when you see that big Greyhound Bus drive in, you know it will be us. It could be possible that we will have enough members who like to sing, and we may sing some of the beautiful songs for the residents at the Rest Home.

Lodge No. 28, East Bernard To Meet March 1st Dear Members, The March meeting will be held in our hall at 2 p.m., on the 1st The agenda, scheduled at this time, will cover all normal reports, special committee of inquiry report, election of a vice-president and any other business needing attention at this time, (included will be a short session on the other up and coming meetings this month.) Our "Social Clan" will socialize, as always, after the meeting.

On the 14th the "officers' workshop" will be held and the lodge officers request that any member having questions that cannot be answered locally bring them forward. This will allow the officers to sort out the questions and take them with them to the workshop.

The District VI meeting will be held on the 29th and some form of or ganization will have to be made as to who is going, who is driving, how many extra passenger spaces are available and what will be the starting time (for the trip).

The February meeting, on the 1st, had all scheduled reports accepted.

Several motions were passed covering such items as the Special Committee of inquiry and the pay of the Audit Committee. The special letter, from SL president, Brother Nick Morris, was read and explained. It will be read again in the next meeting with part of or all being mentioned in the meeting after that.

The door prize was won by Brother Albert Lupik.

The Special Committee of inquiry was formed to investigate an offer made, by a possible buyer, for the lodge building. They met with the party in question February 3rd.

Their report will be given in the March meeting.

The liquid refreshments and some of the sandwiches, for the "Gathering of the Clan" after the meeting, were furnished by the lodge; Sisters Sperlik, Haverda, Brdecka, Luquette and Nezval brought the rest. Listed as they were on the table were spiced lunch meat sandwiches, minced ham sandwiches, deviled eggs, pickles, "Ritz" crackers w/cheese spread, 2 cakes, 2 jelly rolls, cinnamon rolls and small cake do-nuts. A good time and good food was had by all present.

Lodge No. 74, Lovelady Reports on February Meeting Dear Members and Guests: We had the Country Pride entertaining our dancing fans and you could see, by the expressions of everyone who attended, that they really enjoyed their performance.

The Country Pride is composed of local people who are very talented musicians. I have known them from the time they were born. We are really proud to have this fine band; from remarks I've heard stated by several people saying that they are among top performers.

Our February 9th meeting turned out to be very good. All officers and committees had good reports.

We had several new members join our Society and Lodge No. 74, again.

They are: Anne Denice Askew, Melissa Zulean Askew, Elaine J. Logsdon and Jeffrey Alan Logsdon, Denners Fairchild, Chamtok Fairchild, all of Crockett; Rickey Joe Burton of Kennard, Johnny Elton Arnold, from Huntington, and John W. Cates of Alto. All these have been voted on and admitted into the lodge. We are proud to have you join and Lodge No. 74 appreciates all of you who spread news about the benefits that the SPJST provides for its members.

Erma Marsh and Bill Ardry got married February 14. We wish that the rest of your life will be filled with happiness and that's what life should be We really appreciate the fine job our youth leader, Linda 'Wichita is doing; she has increased the youth club members' attendance and the performance is great together with the youngsters. They have really decorated the lodge with Valentines beautifully which reflected the meaning of the event on - the inside of our hall; it was real nice, Linda. We appreciate the fine work.

Seaton Choral Club

SPJST Lodge No. 47 Dear Members and Readers, "Members of the Seaton Choral Club, I am very happy to present this check to you from SPJST Lodge No. 47. We are glad to help the club with your projects." With these words, President Alfred Klusacek donated $200 to the club's treasury.

The presentation was made at the February 10 rehearsal/meeting to accentuate this generous gesture and to express our appreciation.

President Klusaceit is also a CC member.

Nineteen singers were present, and, with Henry Janacek on accordion, practice honored birthdays and anniversaries of December, January and February.

Seleetions by the celebrants, "Cervena sukynka," "Kde potok lucinou," and "Ta trebonska luka" along with other personal and group favorites took us through an enjoyable 45 mintues. Birthdays and anniversaries of those whom the cold weather kept at home will be serenaded at the next singing date.

6/VESTNIK — Wednesday, February 25, 1981 interest to the club were made at the meeting including the monetary donations, but specific business and election of officers was postponed until February 24 in fairness to other club members who were unable- to attend. Since our health and livelihood come first, who can be blamed for staying in on a night such as that? B-r-r-r-r-!!

An invitation to sing on Friday, April 10 will be decided at the next bi-monthly practice. To revive a CC tradition, it was announced that members try to attend the Masquerade Dance on Saturday, February 28 at our hall in mask and masquerade costume of choice. This is a fun event, prizes are awarded in several categories, and all in costumes are eligible to win. Pictures in our scrapbook depict this once-a-year event numerous times; it would be worth reviving again.

Come sing and help determine our future activities.

Friendship Club of Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends, The meeting was called to order on . February 4, 1981 with 19 members and five guests present. Our guests were Alice. Fincher, Benny and Mary Pavey, Jill Parker and Blaine Mason.

Minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved; in addition, the treasurer's report was also approved as read.

"Happy Birthday" was expressed through song for Mollie Walker, Rosemary Gribble, Toni Reed and Roy Alholm It was reported that Jennie Kroll was home from the hospital and that Alex Bunker was seriously ill.

Mary Ann Krivanek read the correspondence from the Texas Electric Co., and reported that a tour is scheduled April 1, 1981 (which is the regular meeting date) to the Comanche Peak Electric Plant under construction near Glen Rose, Tex. The bus would depart from St. Thomas Church at 8 a.m. and return at noon; only adults can take the tour, and not less than 30, and no more than 38.

After some discussion, it was decided that the members would bring chips, dips, salads, sandwiches and pastry. The luncheon would be served after the return tour. Games would also be played.

The March hostesses will be Mary Ann Krivanek and Mary Saldana.

Several members have taken winter vacations recently: Carrie Bell Milan and Jeanie Mason climbed the slopes of Colorado; Bernadette Svacina picked oranges and grapefruit in the Texas valley country; and Roy and I picked sand dollars on the beaches of Padre Island, Port Aransas and Corpus Christi. We also had the pleasure of visiting Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi.

We express sincere sympathy to the family of Mrs. Margie Picha who passed away February 10, 1981. She v.-ill be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Rose Steinman made the motion to adjourn at our last meeting with

Worth Lodge No. 154 Announces Meeting Date; March 8th Fort

Dear Members and Friends: Oh, what a beautiful day! Winter one day and summer the next, how can we all get rid of these bad colds?

We were all saddened by the passing away of Sister Margie Picha. Everyone will miss her smiling face; she always had a good outlook on life. May she rest in peace.

We extend our congratulations to Sister Cynthia Lynn and Craig Atkins Nieting who were wed February 14 in Holy Cross Lutheran Church by the Rev. Paul Short.

Parents of the couple are Brother Bernard A. and Sister Psencik of Mansfield and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon H. Nieting of Fort Worth. The newlyweds will make their home in Burleson. May they have a long and happy life together.

Sunday, several from our lodge had the pleasure of attending a lovely wedding reception at the National Hall honoring Kerri and Leonard Landingham, Jr. Kerri is the daughter of Wynell Tirk and Joe V. Tirk. May they, too, have a long and happy life together.

The Band Committee is to continue their efforts to engage a band for our lodge's annual celebration in August.

The Auditing Committee stated that they found all the books correct.

The president reminded members who haven't paid their local lodge dues of $3 to contact Sister Dorothy Oltmann or Treasurer Lee Leonhardt.

The Food Committee said that the lodge will furnish fried chicken for our March 12th regular meeting.

Therefore, the president appointed a committee consisting of Brothers El Gene Eckermann, Reinhardt Georges and Delton Korth, to cut up and fry the chicken, assisted by the Food Committee and other active members if more help is needed.

Members are to bring a covered dish to help complete the menu.

Congratulations to Brother Michale Noak and wife, Cindy, who are the proud parents of a son born in the Fayette Memorial Hospital recently.

Lodge No. 66, Waco February Meeting Report (March Meeting Date Changed) Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 66 held its meeting Sunday, February 15 with President Daniel Nors presiding.

The flags were presented by Flagbearers Larry Brem and James Yates. The Pledge of Allegiance and lodge motto were recited by the members.

President Nors then asked everyone to remain standing for a moment of silence for our departed members, Sister Carrie Mazanec and Brother Joseph Gaidusek. May they rest in peace.

In roll call of officers, all were present.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt, recording secretary, read the January minutes; with a small correction made, they were approved as read.

Sister Darlene Engelke read a thank you note from the family of Brother Joseph Gaidusek who passed away Saturday, February 7th. She also read a letter from SL President Nick Morris discussing unrelated activities held in the lodges which are the nature of a Fraternal Benefit Society. It was voted we send the president, vicepresident, and others to go to the Supreme Lodge to get more information on this letter and to have the statement clarified. They will then report back to the lodge on information they received.

Brother George Shilling reported for the Entertainment Committee; there were several items brought up that were approved. (Brother Shilling left in order to go check on Sister Dorothy Shilling who was in an auto accident coming to the hall.

We all hope that Sister Dorothy is OK. She was taken to the West Community Hospital for a checkup.

Brother Henry West, chairman of the Board of Trustees, had Sister Engelke read the minutes of their meeting held Wednesday night, February 4th.

New members accepted in February are: Jewel Ray Warhol, Shawn Marie Caldwell, Christie Gail Caldwell, Anthony C. Urech, Heather Hughes, Ella Bob Wooldridge, Madeline D. Simcek; and Alfred Pankonien and Richard Simcek, both had taken out additional insurance. Welcome to Lodge No. 66!

Sister Libbie Parma gave the youth club report. The youth members had a contest on Valentine cards and boxes. The boxes were prizes for a drawing to be held at the end of the meeting. The club plans to go skating and to start on their projects for YAD in June.

Brother Leon Hensel reported the lodge books had been audited. They are in good order.

Health Committee — Sister Polly Gaidusek had sent a sympathy card to Carol and Sam Salvato on the loss of their. mother, Sister Carrie Mazanec. A baby congratulations was sent to the W. L. Warrens; Sister Warren is the daughter of Brother and Sister James Pavlicek.

We heard that Sister Dorothy Jost is very ill; she is in ICU at Hillcrest Hospital. Let us remember Sister Dorothy in our prayers. We hope she continues to improve each day.

Vie also have heard that Sister Agnes Mazanec is improving. We hope she will be home soon.

Resolutions were read for Sister Carrie Mazanec and Brother Joseph Gaidusek.

State Field Manager Silas Smith said cards had been mailed to the sales representatives on the banquet to be held Sunday, March 15, at Lodge No. 84 in Dallas; this being held the same date of our lodge meeting, it was voted to change our meeting to the fourth Sunday, March 22nd, in order for the sales representatives to attend.

Don't forget that the lodge meeting will be held Sunday, March 22nd.

Members celebrating birthdays in February are: Brothers Ray Orsag, Bennie Engelke (both 39), Louie Macha and Sisters Lille Ann Parma, Rose Parma, Mabel Crow and Jeffery Nors. Happy birthday to each of you; the cake was brought by Janice Stanislay.

He was asked to say a few words. As usual, Brother Rudy always has a couple of cute jokes. He also asked how everyone liked the new Vestnik. 1, personally, like it; it is easy to read and the headings (above the letters) are very nice. It is a very good improvement. Brother Sefcik also took pictures of the lodge officers and those having birthdays.

College Station Lodge No. 189 Plans March Meeting and Garage Sale Bryan

Dear Members: Final plans were made for our garage sale at the February meeting. Chairman of the garage sale is Brother Derek Shultz and cochairmen are Sisters Dorothy Vytopil, Jane Shultz and Nina Quitta. If you have any questions, you may contact any of these people.

Brother Shultz informed us that the garage sale will take place Saturday, March 7th. Brother Ernest Wentrcek has offered the use of his garage located at the corner of Lake Street and Cavitt Street (one block North of the Main Post Office).

Any items you have to donate to the sale should be taken to Brother Wentrcek's garage (Lake and Cavitt Streets) by 8 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, March 7th. We plan to start the sale at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. There will also be someone at the garage Friday evening, March 6 after 5 p.m. to receive your donated items. We hope everyone will pitch in and help out our lodge.

The March meeting will be held March 8th at 3:30 p.m. in the KC Hall. We are looking forward to a good sale and seeing everyone at the next meeting.

Dear Members and Friends, Our February meeting was wellattended. President Albert Kubala called the meeting to order and all business was transacted.

It was nice to see Sisters Bennie Bartek and Mary Hubenak and Brothers Richard Hubenak and Carl Zich back with us after recent illnesses. We hope to see Bessie Prochaska more often, also.

Paul Kercho, son of Brother Al and Sister Alene Kercho, was initiated into Alpha Chi National Honor Society at UTA. This is an

all the members for the cards, flowers and visits during his recent stay in the hospital.

Congratulations to James and Sandra Kidd on the birth of a baby boy Sunday, February 15th, also to Tom and Helen Brown on the birth of a baby girl, Brette Leigh, born Sunday, February 15th; grandparents are Mike and Helen Paprskar.

Congratulations also to Dick and Martha Durham who were surprised February 1st, with a dance and celebration in honor of their 30th wedding anniversary. We hope they have many more years together.

Wedding bells rang out recently for Kerrie Anna Tirk and Leonard Ira Landingham, Jr. on January 17th.

They were honored with a reception and dance at the hall Sunday, February 15th. Kerrie is the daughter of Joe V. and Wynell Tirk who are all members of our lodge.

Leonard, passed away Friday, February 13th. His parents are Jack and Dodie Leonard. Dodie is John Murphy's sister and a member of our lodge. Frank Picha of Lodge 154, lost his wife, Margie, February 10th. They were regulars at our polka dances and Margie will be missed by everyone. Sister Margie Praslicka's father, Jack Andrews, also passed away recently.

Lydia Matusevich fell recently at her home, but was not seriously injured; Juanita Johnnie broke her elbow; Albina Farek is in Northwest Hospital following foot surgery; Agnes Merlick is in Medical Plaza with bronchitis; Alex Bunker is in Jarvis Heights Nursing Home.

Plans Made for Conroe Lodge No. 181 Finalized

Dear Members: Lodge No. 181 met at the Holiday Inn for their annual meeting to elect officers for 1981. All enjoyed a wonderful evening of fraternalism.

The old members were voted by acclamation to be retained; Ray Klander, our president, was unable to attend because of illness. Our Vice President James Day presided over the meeting.

The next meeting will be held on the last Friday, April 24 at the home of Chuck Kocsis, 1547 Memorial, McDade Estates. All members are urged to attend. For more information call: 756-7911 or 756-4090.

Hallettsville Lodge No. 4 Sets March 8th Monthly Meeting Dear Members: Our lodge held its monthly meeting Sunday, February 8, 1981 at the Grant Building with a good attendance.

After the opening gavel of the meeting by President Frank Zabransky, the Pledge to the United States Flag was led by Chris and Gary Chudej and Tommy Holy.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes from the last meeting. Correspondence included a special letter from the Supreme Lodge which was read to the members as requested.

Gaynelle Chudej reported on the youth club activities.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave her report. She also read the yearly audit report of Fred J. Strauss, public auditor. It was approved.

A report was given by President Zabransky on the called meeting of the officers and Audit Committee.

They recommended an increase in fee for the financial secretary which was approved by the members.

Hilmer Galetka withdrew his resignation and was unanimously voted to again serve as financial secretary for our lodge.

Members were reminded of the Officers' Seminar to be held in March at Hallettsville High School.

Refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned. The afternoon was spent in playing games

February Lodge No. 81, Needville Report (Next Monthly Meeting March 1st) Lodge No. 81 met February 8 at 2 p.m. for its Tegular monthly meeting. The meeting was called to order by President Charlie Matcek and Brother Gilbert Walzel led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag.

All officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes and, after a minor correction, they were accepted as read.

Sister Matilda Slacalek and Sister Gusta Lee Lenert will be 50-year pin recipients and it was decided to present them at the District V meeting March 8th.

President Charlie Matcek read an important letter from the Supreme Lodge, which is to be read again at our next meeting.

The financial report was given by Aleene Zwahr. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall gave her report.

Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel presented all the activities that are booked for the hall and then gave his financial report.

The Supreme Lodge will pay your tuition, mileage, and meals for the duration of the Laboratory.

The week will be full of gaining new knowledge and creative ideas by "sharing" with each other different ideas and techniques. Even though all of you will not be able to attend, I would like to see as many of you there as possible. This is such good training for the work you do in your youth clubs.

For more information, you may contact me, but make it soon. Enrollment is limited and there is an advance registration fee that must be sent in. So, if you definitely plan to attend, contact me immediately for further enrollment information.

Youth Counselors DISTRICT IV YOUTH COUNSELOR Youth of District IV, it is time to think about activities that are coming up soon.

The first is District IV meeting which will be held in Lubbock April 26. We will have the same contests as previous years. I would like to hear from each lodge beforehand if you plan to be on the program, so I could plan the program. Each youth club takes care of their own booth sale items and keep proceeds.

This year the YAD will be June 28 because one of the other districts wanted our second Sunday of June, as they couldn't get the hall for their regular day so we exchanged. This will give you some extra time to work up your crafts and talents, but it is time to begin. State YAD will be August 23, and Royalty will be Sept.

We will camp again with District I; the date has not been set as of today and I hope it doesn't catch us again as last year, but, if so, we may make other plans.

For the youth leaders and assistants: we will have our youth leaders' training class March 28 at my house and the time is 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Our new Supreme Lodge State Youth Director Jann Thomas will meet with us and we will discuss the rule book and work up next year's program for District 4, so all youth leaders and assistants, please make an effort to be present and bring all your suggestions with you for our youth program; also be thinking about making the spring meeting at Val Verde April 3-5. This is a very instructive meeting for all leaders.

CYCLONE LODGE NO. 24 YOUTH CLUB ENJOY MEETING AND VALENTINE PARTY Dear Readers, February 11, 1981, our meeting was called to order by President Beverly Marek.

For the first order of business, we discussed the spring District II meeting to be held March 15 at Seaton Lodge No. 47. We also talked about the Valentine Dance and who had planned to attend at Academy Lodge No. 177. Additional plans were then discussed about attending the Skating Party held by District II at the Skate Haven, which was the social of the month held February 22nd.

We then enjoyed a Valentine Party consisting of cake, cup cakes, candy and sodawater, and we exchanged Valentines.

YOUTH REPORT ON ACTIVITIES Our SPJST Lodge No. 50, El Campo Youth Club held their monthly meeting February 5th at the American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary Building. We had a short meeting and a Valentine Party. We exchanged Valentines and played games.

Dear Readers, Our meeting was held February 1st. We talked about our Valentine Party and the bake sale which was held February 13.

We also planned to go to the rest home, February 11th.

Survivors include husband, Guy M. Sandel, Dallas; son, David Ridgley, Grand Prairie, Texas; brother, Albert Straka; sisters, Ann McKinney, Muriel Straka and Mary Jane Straka, all of Dallas; and five grandchildren.

Rosary was recited Sunday at the Sparkman Hillcrest Chapel in Dallas. Requiem Mass was on Monday, Feb. 2, at St. Edward's Catholic Church with Rev. Francis J. Becker as celebrant. Interment was at Calvary Hill in Dallas, Texas.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace and her memory live among us forever.

Items of Interest (Editor's Note: The following is excerpted from information supplied by the NFCA Fraternal Life Committee. The idea is pertaining to "share fraternalism.")

The History of American Family Day At the 92nd annual meeting of the National Fraternal Congress of America held in Toronto, Canada, in 1978, the Family Life Committee presented its annual National Family Life Award to John Makkai of Tucson, Arizona. Mr. Makkai was chosen for the award because of his lobby on behalf of American Family Day. As a result of his lobbying, several governors have now proclaimed the first Sunday in August as American Family Day, a day not to be commercialized but one where people would give of themselves to remind families of what they have. In other words, a special day would be set aside each year to honor the family.

The NFCA Family Life Committee is encouraging every member Society to support this worthwhile idea. With as many groups as possible participating, American Family Day will surely be brought to the attention of many more state governments, and who knows, perhaps even to the attention of President Ronald Reagan.

How a Local Unit or a Fraternal Benefit Society can Observe Family Day Special emphasis should be stressed, by families or lodges as a group, with members bringing their families. All families can probably gather at a park for a picnic or barbecue. A committee could plan games and activities suitable for all age groups. Announce Family Day through official publication and at meetings.

After the outing at the park, families should continue their "togetherness" by planning some activity at home that will involve "doing" rather than "watching?' The success of the activity will really depend on the enthusiasm and cooperation of the family members, and it need not be complicated. The idea is for families to create their own activities — to work together in the creation and planning of the events in which they want to participate.

Each member can be made responsible for a specific activity, or it may be better to have everyone share the responsibility. A primary requisite of a "Family Day" activity is that it be pleasant and enjoyable.

Family Day Suggestions Family.History Time - The tremendous popularity of the television series, "Roots," has sparked genealogical research by families. Get out all the old family pictures, records, letters and bibles and research them for family background. Discuss when and where each member of the family was born, earliest childhood memories, schools, attended and what was studied, and what they want to achieve out of life.

Sing-Along - Obtain song books at a library or local music store and select a program of favorite songs which the family can sing together.

Include some simple songs if real young children are involved. Mom and Dad should be,pncouraged to try some of the latest hit tunes. Try

singing along with some favorite recorder., These Family Day suggestions are being presented by the Family Life Committee of the National Fraternal Congress of America so that family members can better understand why the family is so important 3 to each of them individually. They will discover that family living can be fun and that such activities can be the most rewarding experiences a family ever undertakes. There is no substitute for family love and family solidarity.

In addition, Kubiak was named as Chairman of the Budget and Oversight Subcommittee for the Agriculture and Livestock Committee.

This Subcommittee has the responsibility for preparing the budget for the Department of Agriculture, Texas A&M Extension Service, Texas A&M Experimental Station, and the other agricultural related agencies.

The Rockdale Legislator was also chosen to serve on the Rules Committee.

Kubiak said that he intended to use his experience and seniority to work for alternate energy development, property tax reduction, and a better educational system.

AUSTIN — Daily spending by auto visitors to Texas soared in the first half of 1980.

Texas visitors who averaged a week's stay coughed up $5.50 more per day for their trips in the January-through-June 1980 period compared to the previous year.

Tom H. Taylor, director of the Travel and Information Division of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation said outof-staters who traveled to Texas by automobile spent an average of $63.11 per party per day. This was 30 percent more than they spent during the same period in 1979.

Although auto expenses took the biggest bite, 27 cents, from the visitor's travel dollar, food, at 23.6 cents, and lodging costs, at 23.2 cents, were not far behind.

Entertainment and miscellaneous expenses accounted for the remainder of the visitor's dollar.

The figures, along with other tourism-related data, are detailed in a report recently released by the department. The mid-year results can be obtained by writing VIR Survey, DHT, Box 5064, Austin, Texas 78763.

The comparative survey is an interim tabulation of statistics collected on a year-round basis by the department. The 1980 mid-year figures are based on responses made by over 11,600 tourist parties who visited Texas.

"We won't know the total number of visitors or their aggregate expenditures in 1980 until later this year," Taylor said. "These figures will be presented in our 1980 REPORT ON THE TEXAS VISITOR INDUSTRY which will be released in late spring.

"However, the expenditure comparisons given in this mid-year survey indicate that visitors spent more travel dollars in 1980," Taylor said The increase in expenditures was much greater than the general rate of inflation."

Dallas, San Antonio and Houston, in that order, were the top three cities visited by out-of-staters during the first half of 1980.

Oklahoma retained its number one rank as the state providing Texas with the most auto visitors.

Foreign visitors, excluding Mexicans, came primarily from Canada, West Germany and Great Britain in the first six months of 1980.The report doesn't include Mexican visitors since partial year figures on tourists from Mexico are unavailable.

Why

SOKOL — THE FALCON When the Bohemian Physical Culture Society was being established in Prague for the "Czech" people, there was much discussion of a symbol for this newly-created organization. The eagle was considered and finally not favored because it was the symbol of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and, also, a symbol of several other European nations. These nations who have the "Eagle" (some were doubleheaded eagles), in their respective crests were intolerant and oppressive to many of their national subjects.

When the idea and programming of a physical culture society for a Slavonic people was presented and discussed among the various Slavonic nations, the south Sla ys suggested the "Falcon."

The South Slavonic nations (Croats, Serbs, Slovenes and Bulgars) compare their heroes defenders of their respective nations - to the Falcon. Though a bird of prey, smaller than the hawk and the eagle, it is remarkable for its elegant form and powers of flight. It has courage, endurance and lightning speed, and is noted for its sharp eyesight, especially when flying high. Thus the Falcon symbolizes the ideas of STRENGTH, FITNESS AND HIGH AIMS. Through the "SOKOL" idea, a physical culture society for the Czech people was established, its aims and purpose became rapidly known and extended to all Slavonic people. The symbol of the Falcon (SOKOL) united all Slavonic nations and encourages them to defend their rights and heritage in the world.
