Lodge 177 Aids Widow, 5 Children Charity And Community Involvement Lodge 177 Academy turned over in excess of $2,000 to the widow and 5 children of a young man who lost his life in the Academy-Little River area recently as the result of a boating accident. This was announced by President Jerry Tomastik, who wants to thank all those workers and members involved in putting on this event, which was a benefit dance, and especially to the four bands who contributed their musical services free of charge.

ENNIS LODGE NO. 25 HELD SPECIAL CEREMONIES AT THEIR DECEMBER MEETING Lodge Officers, L to R: Treasurer Louis Kudrna, President Van Fowler. Vice Jesse J. Jochec, 80, passed away President James Whitlill, Recording Secretary Margaret Krajca, Youth Leader in the Bellville General Hospital Linda Trojacek, Sergeant-at-Arms Gary Mizell, and Financial Secretary Rita Sunday, February 8th. Funeral Holland. (Pictures by Elizabeth Krajca) services were held Tuesday from the Etlinger Funeral Home in Bellville, with burial in the Oak Knoll Cemetery in Bellville. Ministers offi ciating were the Reverends Gordon Hejl and Henry Beseda, with SL President Nick A. Morris officiating in Czech on behalf of the SPJST. Bro. Jochec joined Lodge No. 1 in Fayetteville in December of 1945 and was a member of that lodge at the time of his death.

Lodge 177 has been very active in contributing to community and charitable causes in their community, including the public schools, and this recent gesture is another in that series which reflects the general philosophy of the officers and members of Lodge 177. As Bro. Jerry Tornastik said, "When we see a need in our community, we try to help.

Our lodge has been blessed with good fortune and we feel that we should share that good fortune."

—Author Unknown January 7, 1981 was the first issue of this year and also the first issue in our new format in the 16-page tabloid form of our weekly Vestnik and, with the first issue and since then, we have tried to make the front page appear interesting and attractive although it probably is not grouped altogether in sections as our previous format was, however, we feel that our membership agrees with the way it is Your editor feels that "FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK", etc., would not be as attractive even though our By-laws stated that the Vestnik should begin with the editorial; it serves the same purpose on pages 2 and 3. We are endeavoring to make the publication as useful to our Society and membership as possible at least as long as we can; of course, there may be a time when we will not have the necessary type of material for such front pages; so far we have been fortunate in having enough of the appropriate material.

The Publication Committee will meet early in March and we will discuss all aspects in connection with the publication of our official organ, The Vestnik (Herald) at that time.

The chances are that if someone did try to count them they would soon become impatient with the nuisance of, keeping track of the number. *** By nature man is a social creature and when cut off from social contacts becomes morose and unhappy; therefore, if you cut yourself off from others, you are making yourself unhappy. Everyone needs other people to satisfy inner needs, so get involved in lodge work. Our SPJST endeavor is a fine outlet in combating the unsatiated desire for fellowship, so share in the participation. You will find the more you become involved with others, the happier you will be. *** Enthusiasm is a must for leaders.

It is contagious. It rubs off on other people. If you are enthusiastic, your listener is apt to become enthusiastic. Though a salesman may present his ideas, without enthusiasm his sales talk is dead. Anyone can acquire the habit of enthusiasm by cultivating a positive attitude. First, be curious . . . Learn about people and you will understand and like them better . . . Be imaginative .. .

Look at your work as though you were tackling it for the first time, and you will begin to see possibilities you had overlooked. Tackle a job with fresh energy and others will respond to the attraction of your wholehearted enthusiasm. *5* Success is not simply a question of how much skill one has, but of how well he can get along with others.

The development of an individual as an individual . . . consists in joining hands with others in constructive cooperation without loss of inner freedom and sense of value.

From the District V SR Thanks for doing a great job for the month of December. No. 1 is Sister Anne Robinson of Lodge No. 175 with $175,000 in sales; No. 2 is Sister Birdie (Hilsher) Pech of Lodge No. 88 with $174,000 in sales; and No. 3 is Brother Sidon Tumis of Lodge No. 142 with $141,000 in sales.

I want to say thank you for your extra effort you made to help me and District V to meet our quota that was set for us in 1980.

The year 1980 was a very trying year for our salespersons; many would like to buy but the inflationary cost of living and everything that we buy is high in cost. To all of you sales representatives, please think of the past and present.

For 1980 No. .1 in District V is Sister Della Kadlecek of Lodge No. 88 with $487,500 in sales; No. 2 is Sister Anne Robinson of Lodge No. 175 with $408,000 in sales; and No. 3 is Brother Sidon Tumis of Lodge No. 142 with $405,000 in sales.

I appreciate all the work that was accomplished by all the sales representatives: the ones who retired from their sales and the ones who helped while here before they went to their resting place.

As your DSR for 12 years, I have met many nice members and friends all over the district and state. It is wonderful to have real honest friends who will help you at any time when you need them and also invited you to their home. I traveled the district and met with alt the lodge officers; they were so pleased that someone came out to see them and tried to help them grow in their membership.

Everyone I met was always very happy and appreciated that I did take the time to visit them. All the sales representatives who I trained and visited in their homes will be remembered by all and all the good times we had being together. It was with pleasure to work in the district and meet such lovely people. Everyone was very kind and welcomed me in as part of a family; never was I treated like a stranger. It is with pride to meet these kinds of members and guests in the district. I will treasure these years spent working in District V and for the SPJST. There was lots of work accomplished in the district: training new SRs, merging lodges, starting new lodges, etc., I cannot say how much time was spent driving, visiting and helping the SRs and the lodges; if I wrote a book, it would be quite answering.

It was nice to have a Million Dollar SR for two years; that was Sister Birdie (Hilsher) Pech. Thank you for your kind deeds! Thanks, also to many others who were No. 1 in the district for many years. We always met our quota that was set for us by the Supreme Lodge and all the meetings that were held for us by the Supreme Lodge and the speakers who we had to train us better for programming and promotion sales; also, the FIC has helped me in so many ways to help others.

This is my last report as DSR. I know a lot of you over the years in the state and they told me how much they have enjoyed my reports, to you I want to say thank, you; akto

We are to have five members who will be awarded 50-year pins this year To celebrate this occasion, we are planning a covered dish dinner and the presentation of the pins at our next meeting, which will be held March 1st, at 1 p.m. A social afternoon is being planned and a meeting in the afternoon. All members please note the change in time and come join us for lunch. Each family is asked to bring a meat and vegetable or dessert dish. The honorees are asked not to bring food unless they so desire.

President Bayer gave a detailed report of inventory and finances.

Lori Hrna volunteered to be our representative to the City Park's Recreational Board and Phyllis Purchis is to be our Peanut Festival representative.

A suggestion was made that we try to start our meetings at the designated time. A great inconvenience is caused if meetings do not start on time.

Laura Lea Pavliska was awarded the door prize for the month of February.

Roll call was answered by all the officers.

Patti White is recuperating satisfactorily at the Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. Her son, Johnny, is staying with the Bob I3ayers while his mother is in the hospital. We miss you, Pat, so hurry and, get well!

Reports of the secretary, financial secretary and treasurer were heard and approved.

Recommended and motioned by the Screening Committee for membership were Michael Alton Baumann, Jr., and Donna Cordes.

Motion was seconded by Elizabeth Bielefeld and motion carried.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer gave a report of youth club finances and pending activities. The youth club bus will be making the trip to Robstown for the District VII meeting.

A charge of $5 for adults and $2.50 for children will be made. Barbara Burleson is in charge of planning some entertainment for the program. The tickets for the TV drawing are to be printed soon.

A motion was made by John Burleson that we charge $50 for the hall rent with a $35 deposit for cleaning. Motion carried.

A discussion on various charities was discussed and tabled.

Our regular and annual meeting was held December 10th, 1980.

After reading the minutes of the previous meeting all other reports were given. There were seven applications for insurance membership and several transfers. It was moved and seconded that they all be accepted. Welcome to our lodge. We hope to see you often.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The article, pertaining to our dress code (Section X, page IX) of our local Rules and Regulations was brought back for a change at our next meeting, March 1, 1981, therefore, it is to be printed in every issue of the Vestnik until then. It must pass by two-thirds (2/3) majority on March 1 to eliminate the old article; so if you want our dress policy changed, it is up to you members of Lodge 47 to come vote March 1, 1981.

In other business discussed was our annual picnic which we always had on the fourth Sunday in May. More on this at our March meeting; also the fence around our newlybought acreage was discussed.

There is one thing I would like to mention to our members or the SPJST membership as a whole; it is this: If you are receiving more than one Vestnik in a household, notify your secretary of the lodge so that this household will not receive but one Vestnik. Won't you members please do this? As you know, postage and paper are expensive.

The chairmen of the different committees gave good reports for the month of January.

The Board of Trustees met after the regular meeting and some items discussed were the purchase of five ceiling fans for the hall and a new cooling box for the bar, which I understand have already been purchased.

After the meeting we held a happy hour and a good lunch was served.

Activities Told at Lodge No. 172, Pasadena

Dear Members and Friends: Our dances this year have been splendid affairs; everyone has enjoyed the music and the special environment. The Hosting Committees for the dances were Albert and Tommie Risinger January 10th; John and Esther Mikeska were in charge for the January 24th dance and Tommy and Helen Wallace were in charge of the February 7th dance.

All of these persons did a great job on our hall activities; in addition, -SPJSTEsther Mikeska and Evelyn Kemmons did a great job on our hall Holland Lodge No. event for our Valentine Dance, February 7th.

The Waller County SPJST Lodge No. 42 met at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 25th. The members present were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Musil, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Gaydosik and Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Peschke and their son, Michael.

President Musil read a letter from the Supreme Lodge stating that all lodge activities should be related to fraternal life insurance. Mrs. Joe Musil gave the financial report and told the members that we now have 82 members.

New officers were elected and they are as listed: President Joe Musil, Vice President Emil Gaydosik, Financial Secretary and Treasurer Alice Musil, Secretary Melba Gaydosik and Reporter Cheryl Peschke.

The meeting was adjourned and refreshments were enjoyed by all the members.

Report of Lodge No. 47, Seaton for February Monthly

President Alfred Klusacek called our monthly meeting to order February 1 at 2 p.m.

Flagbearers Gene Skrabanek and David Pechal led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We had a very good attendance of members and visitors who were: Ann Balusek, Anna Mae Hejl, Ruth Janacek, Helen Kruse, Viola.

Adamek, Frances Kotrla and Frank Kotrla.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the minutes of our last meeting; also the roll call of officers and representatives, and correspondence.

Our new members are: Melissa Ann Ross, Russell Brandon Belson, Marvin B. Bragewitz, Cleo Grace Nichols, Katherine Elezabeth Smith, Curtis Dean Smith, Jason Phillip Smith and Connie Diane Wilson.

Sister Skrabanek also read the treasurer's report in the absence of Ruby L. Bolton. Ruby flew to New Thrk With her sister, Emi l y Stute-

ville, to visit with Gene Mikeska, Emily's son. I know they were having a great time.

Reported on our sick list were: Frank Sefeik, Vaclav Sefeik, Henry Haisler, Frank D. Mikeska., Edwin Mikeska, Vertis Mesecke, Bill Kosarek and Llorraine Maas. Some of these are home from the hospital and doing fine. Some are still in the hospital and, for those, we wish a very speedy recovery. We also wish our District II Director Henry Vitek a speedy recovery.

All officers and chairpersons gave satisfactory reports; also an audit report for 1980 was given by Chairman Clarence Sodek. Minutes from the Board Meeting were read by Alfred L. Klusacek, secretary of the board.

The membership voted to donate $100 to the Bell County Junior Livestock Fair.

It was reported that the District II spring meeting will be held at Seaton Star Hall, March 15. We will serve a meal, which will consist of sausage, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, green beans and bread.

Ladies of our lodge are asked to bring sweets. You all come! I'm sure there will be more details published

by District II officers.

Appointed to the Maintenance Committee were: Floyd Stuteville, Woodrow Marek, Vince Haisler, Eugene Hejl and Mike Wilson.

Dorothy Morris gave a report on the Choral Group, requesting monetary support for a float in April for the Rogers Homecoming Parade.

Request was granted.

Our Youth Leader Shirley Patterson gave her report. She an nouneed her assistants as Raymond Patterson and Mary Ann Billeck.

Birthdays celebrated in February are: Eugene Hejl, Lillian Kosarek, Annie Chupik, Adolph Shenkir, Helen Janacek and Shirley Patterson. Only one anniversary was acknowledged: Brother Nick and Sister Dorothy Morris. Congratulations to all of you!

It was also decided, unanimously, to have a picnic again this year. We skipped last year and everyone missed it very much; more on this as plans develop. A lot of help will be needed so keep this in mind.

Refund checks were read and door prizes were won by Vlasta Motl and Louis J. Marek.

After each meeting we have a lunch. I had brought a "No-cook pickle" that several ladies wanted recipes for so here it is: Brine: Mix 2 cups white vinegar, 1/4 cup salt and 3 1/2 cups sugar. Let this stand, stirring now and then. This must be dissolved. While the brine is setting, get .3 lbs. of cucumbers washed and sliced thin with peelings. 1 lb. onions sliced, (1 green pepper and 1 red pepper, sliced, may be added). Mix altogether. Pour the brine over the cucumbers and let stand in refrigerator overnight. Put in jars with the liquid and store in refrigerator. This keetas-1 for months. Happy canning!

The nice rain we have had this past week is very promising for gardening and farmers. Of course, we do need more.

Dallas Circle of Czech Women Announces March 5th Meeting The little ground hog saw his shadow. You all know what that means - six weeks of bad weather ahead. Maybe not!

Our Circle met February 5. President A. Zvolanek called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was repeated, followed by a few moments of silence in memory of Sister Agnes Hemzal, mother of Sister L. Kartous, Bill Drzawicki, husband of Sister L. Drzewicki, Ignac Chovanetz, brother of Sister M. Dujka, and Casimer Wisniewski, brother-in-law of Sisters A. Zvolanek, M. Sebestik, A. Roberts, and V. Tupy. Sincere sympathy is expressed to the bereaved families. We held a moment of silent prayer for the safe return of the ex-hostages.

Sister Z. Skotak read the minutes in the, absence of Sister J. Kankrlik.

Sister M. Sebestik took the minutes for Josie.

Corresponding secretary L. Pavelka was busy doing kitchen duty, so Sister M. Sebestik read her report. Thank-you notes were read from the following: Sister A. Lesikar for flowers sent her at Christmas, R. L. Kartous family for flowers for the services for Sister A. Hemzal, Veterans Auxiliary'for the donation at Christmas, American Heart Fund for memorial received for Bill Drzewicki, National Council of Women for Free Czechoslovakia for our contribution, Sisters H. Vrla, Sr., and M. Malooly for flowers sent them while hospitalized.

Sister B. Kalich sent 14 various cards during December and January.

Sister H. Vrla, Jr. sent flowers at Christmas to Sisters C. Kebrle, F. Konakovsky, and A. Lesikar, also flowers to the services for Sister A. Hemzal. Helen sent flowers to Sisters H. Vrla, Sr., M. Malooly, and L. Polansky, who were hospitalized.

Sister L. Paveika took a plant to Sister M. Tullis at Christmas. We want to thank Sister M. Malooly's daughter-in-law for sending the birthday cards during Martha's illness. Sister R. Bednar will be in charge of sending birthday cards until Martha is able to resume her duties.

Sister B. Reames took charge of collecting the membership dues in the absence of Sister M. Sykora.

Our Circle voted to give a donation to the Sokol Board of Directors for the use of the building and facilities. We appreciate it. The response to the Czech school at Eastfield College was very good. A third class will be started.

Sister Adela Lesikar sent a donation in memory of her late husband and all the sisters who have passed away. G. Skotak gave a donation for the lunch and Sister M. Kubacak for her guest. Sister M. Fitz donated for birthday cards.

Other donations were from: Sisters V. Tupy, 1 lb. coffee; L. Pavelka and F. Schweizer, nut cups and, candy.

All the donations are appreciated.

The tables were very nicely decorated with a Valentine motif.

Our guests were Margaret Christe, Erna Wostoupal, who brought Sister L. Polansky to the meeting, Joe Vlk, Alvin Elsik, Wesley Tupy, Gilbert Kalich, George Skotak and Bob Zvolanek.

Hostesses were Sisters L. Pavelka, V. Tupy, L. Elsik, B. Kalich, M. Kubacak, F. Peressenyi, F. Schweizer and F. Sparks. There were 39 present. Sisters, please remember to bring a gift to each meeting for the 10-cent drawing.

This is our money-making project.

Our hearts were saddened upon the sudden death of our Sister Libbie's husband, Casimer (Cherry) Wisniewski, who died January 21. He was a very fine man and we shall miss him.

Sister M. Fitz had a nice visit with her son and family in California last month. Gary Kohn, son of Sister Vickie and Jerry Kohn, spent several days skiing in Copper Mountain, Colorado.

Congratulations to Barbara Lingberg, daughter of Sister Adell and Joe Vlk, for being the lucky winner of the $50 game contest in the Food section of the Dallas Morning News.

AUTH SECTION From The State Youth Director To All DYCs, Youth Leaders and Assistants: Once again the annual Longhorn Recreation Lab is upon us. It will be held again this year at the 4-H Encampment near Brownwood Lake, beginning Sunday, March 8th and continuing through Friday, March 13th. The Supreme Lodge will pay your tuition, mileage, and meals for the duration of the Laboratory.

The week will be full of gaining new knowledge and creative ideas by "sharing" with each other different ideas and techniques. Even though all of you will not be able to attend, I would like to see as many of you there as possible. This is such good training for the work you do in your youth clubs.

For more information, you may contact me, but make it soon. Enrollment is limited and there is an advance registration fee that must be sent in. So, if you definitely plan to attend, contact me immediately for further enrollment information.

The El Campo Lodge No. 50 Youth Club met February 5th, at the Ladies' Auxiliary Building.

The meeting was opened by President Melissa Brandt. We recited the Pledge to the Flag.

Secretary Joseph Bartos read the minutes and Treasurer Jackie Marek gave the treasury report and collected dues.

We then discussed old and new business.

We held a Valentine Party; the youth exchanged Valentines. We also had a Valentine contest for which each youth brought a decorated Valentine box. In the 6 through 9 group were: 1st place — Amanda Vanek; 2nd — Denise Rek; 3rd — Trice Molberg.

In the 10 through 12 group were: 1st place -- Tammy Dybala; 2nd — Jodie Henderson; 3rd — Pamela Brandt.

In the 13 through 17 group were: 1st place — Lori Henderson; 2nd --Melissa Brandt; 3rd — Joseph Bartos.

We also had a Valentine guessing game.

Mothers present included: Mrs. Anna Bartos, Mrs. Josephine Brandt, Mrs. Dillon, Mrs. Georgie Henderson, Mrs. Janet Holub, Mrs. Janet Marek, Mrs. Edith Molberg, Mrs. Bernice Rek, Mrs. Rita Vanek and Mrs. Vlasta Bartos.

YOUTH PARTICIPATE IN ACTIVITY AT SEATON LODGE NO. 47 Dear Readers: Eight youth members of SPJST Lodge No. 47 served the food when the annual lodge Christmas party was held in early December. The girls looked very attractive in their red and white striped aprons and did an excellent job!

Dear Members and Friends: The youth club held their meeting February 1. The attendance was good.

February 12, the youth members planned to go to the West Rest Haven with their projects; also will give each person a Valentine and other gifts.

February 13, our club had planned a bake sale at the Leroy Bank at 5 p.m. Each club member was asked to bring their baked goods to the bank.

In addition a Valentine Party was also planned on the same day, February 13, at 7:30 p.m. We agreed to have hamburgers and other goodies plus games and exchange Valentines. Everyone was encouraged to bring a friend.

The youth club had a contest on Valentine cards they made. They are now selling knives, cookbooks and cards, so if you would like to have some of these items, call any one of the club members or me.

March 1st is our next meeting and our kite-flying contest. They will be judged as to the prettiest, oddest, highest-flying, smallest-flying, home-made and home-made-flying; do come out and fly your kite.

Birthdays in February were for: Tammie Mynar, Stephanie Mynar, Bennie Mynar and Jeff Hykel.

Darrell Uptmor brought the pretty Valentine cake. Thank you, Darrell.

FEBRUARY 26TH NEXT MEETING OF YOUTH CLUB OF LODGE NO. 142, HOUSTON Dear Members: The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 142 Youth Club was called to order January 30, 1981 by Betty Stein, president. The Pledge to the Flag was led by Frank Pavlicek.

Karen Hochen reported she had no minutes of the last meeting.

Dennis Veselka gave the treasurer's report.

Awards were given from the Christmas p-oject: 1st place went to Dennis Veselka: 2nd place, Keith Kies,chnick; 3rd and 4th were a tie between Betty Stein and Curtis Kieschnick. Other awards went to William Janik, Betty Stein and Keith and Curtis Kieschnick.

January 15 we went to see a movie which was enjoyed by all who went.

Under new business for the month we discussed the bake sale, paper and can drive at the adult meeting on February 8th.

After our meeting our leaders took us bowling at Merchants Park Lanes. We all bowled pretty good despite the many gutter balls.

Next meeting is February 26th at 7:30 p.m. at the lodge hall. Plan to be there to finalize going to the rodeo.

Remember March 8th is District V meeting at Needville.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister MRS. ALBINA S. MACAT, of Nelsonville, who passed away in a Bellville nursing home Friday, January 30, 1981, at the age of 84 years.

Sister Macat was born in Nelsonvine 5 November 1896, the daughter of the late Frank and Rosalie Sisa.

She attended school at Santa Anna and was a faithful member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 33 of Bleiblerville.

Her husband preceded her in death 7 February 1930.

"Nazdar" was made popular by the Sokols, and in this country it was regarded as a special Sokol greeting.

This is no longer so. "Nazdar" is very common, and no longer connected with Sokol use exclusively. When you meet someone who is older or whom you do not know closely, then the greeting of "dobry den" would come to your lips, while a close friend or contemporary you would greet with "nazdar". From the point of an English-speaking person the usage of "nazdar" is peculiar in the sense that it could and actually is commonly used, not only when meeting a person like the American "hello", but also in parting, instead of "na shledanou" or "sbohem.".
