A baked chicken dinner with all the trimmings will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m. — $3.50 for adults and $2.00 for children. A Social will begin at 2 p.m. followed by a dance at 5 until 9 p.m. with Joe Patek's orchestra furnishing the music.

January Lodge No. 47, Seaton Meeting Report Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our first monthly meeting of the year was held Sunday, January 4 at 2 p.m. with our outgoing President Jerry Pechal bringing the meeting to order.

Our Flagbearers David Pechal and Gene Skrabanek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We did not have a youth leader at our annual election of officers in November; however, Sister Shirley Patterson reconsidered and was re(Continued on Page 6)

Wednesday, January 14 and Thursday, January 15 we attended the Supreme Lodge meeting as time would permit. Your editor listened to the reports of the officers and discussed the, advertising in the Vestnik on page 14 which is restricted to SPJST lodge advertising and fraternal organizations of a noncompetitive nature. You have noticed that the size of the ads is larger than before we went to the tabloid format. The price of the ads will be $25 each for one-sixth of a page. Your editor will do his best to cooperate with all lodges in their desires. We will bill you at the end of each month.

Please keep us advised about the Calendar dates and also the ads and PLEASE MAIL EARLY EACH WEEK! May we request, again, that you use only one side of the paper and PLEASE DOUBLE SPACE! We will appreciate your efforts in this respect, very much! We will report as time goes along. It has taken time to adjust to the new format and time schedule.

Make A Special Effort To Be There; You and Your Lodge Will Benefit By It (See accompanying article for further details) —Supreme Lodge ., SPJST

Based on precedence and recent actions of the Supreme Lodge, the following will be in effect for the workshops in 1981: 1) Officers will be those as before, including the lodge treasurer, or some other person designated by the lodge.

2) Sections will include lodge presidents and vice presidents in one section, lodge secretaries in another, and financial secretaries in another. The treasurers may attend any or all of the three sections, moving to them only at the start of the sessions or during the breaks.

3) Mileage for one car only from each lodge, $.30 a mile, however, if one of the locations is not convenient for the officers of a particular lodge on the date scheduled, they may attend the workshops at one of the other locations, but mileage would still be paid for only one car from each lodge at any one of the three locations. Anyone else wishing to attend these workshops, other than mentioned here, is welcome to do so, furnishing their own transportation.

These workshops held in previous years were proven to be mutually beneficial. They will deal primarily with lodge procedures and adminis tration. We are not including workshops on youth work or insurance per se, since these two areas are adequately covered in district and state seminars and training classes.

We must remember that our national and state laws define a Fraternal Benefit Society as "Having ,a

President Nors asked everyone to stand in a moment of silence for our departed members, Sister Wilma Briggs and Brother James Crow.

The November minutes were read

by Sister Bonnie Pruitt. They stood approved as read.

In correspondence, holiday greetings were read from various departments of the Supreme Lodge, from March of Dimes, Easter Seals, and thank you notes from the members who had received cheer baskets and a visit from the Cheer Committee.

Thank you notes were also read from the family of Sister Wilma Briggs for food, flowers and calls during the illness and loss of their loved one; also from the family of Brother James Crow and the family of Sister Joan Talsma. Additional thank you note was read from Brother Ed and Sister Agnes Mazanec to the Board of Trustees for a lovely plant sent to Sister Agnes who is in a Lubbock hospital.

We wish her a very successful recovery.

Brother West, chairman of the Board of Trustees, had Sister Engelke read the minutes of their meeting held Wednesday night, January 7th.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Brother George Shilling reported the committee had met and selected their chairman for the year.

He gave a report on the Christmas party and dance. Plans are to have a meal at the February meeting.

(More details on this later). Brother Shilling said the dances for 1980 had been very good.

Brother Frank Parma gave a report on the ticket office; this was also a very good detailed report.

Sister Libbie Parma reported on the youth club. The club did an outstanding job on the collection of empty cigarette packages. They are still collecting them, so bring them if you have any. Sister Parma also thanked everyone for the items and money donated for the food baskets.

They made two large baskets, which they gave to the Salvation Army; also 20 bags of goodies left by Santa.

One of our elder members, Mrs. Shiller, mother of Sister Clara Kutni, sent the club $25 for their project. A very sweet and generous gift! Thanks to Sister Shiller. The club donated $15 to the Taylor S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home, $10 to Christmas Seals, and $15 to the Bellmead "Meals on Wheels." The club has been very active and we are proud of them.

State Field Manager Silas Smith reported on some of their events. A first in history of selling 200 million dollars in 1980 in insurance! They will hold classes for all sales representatives. One will be at Linden Hall, March 23rd. You are requested to try to be present. A new contest in insurance sales will be held and there are rules and other information you need to learn, so plan to attend this meeting. It sounds very interesting.

It was so nice to have Brother Silas and Sister Jeanette Smith attend the meeting. We have missed both of you and we hope you will come often; also Brother Silas said everyone should plan to visit the LAM department since it has been moved to its new location. He said Brother Otto Hanus has done an excellent job on fixing the displays.

Health Committee Report — Sister Polly Gaidusek reported that get-well card was sent to Sister Agnes Mazanec in a Lubbock hospital, following surgery. Good luck, Sister Agnes, our thoughts and prayers are with you. We are very glad to hear that Brother Sid Pokladnik is at home doing fine. Sympathy cards were sent to the Jessie Briggs on the loss of their loved one (Sister Wilma will be missed, she was a very good worker and to know her was to love her. May she rest in peace); a card was also sent to the family of Brother James Crow.

May he rest in peace). Sister Gaidusek continued reporting that the Cheer Committee had made and delivered 33 cheer baskets to the elderly and shut-in members.

Congratulations to the Wayne Wigleys on the arrival of a son Christmas Day; what a lovely Christmas gift! Sister Bonnie Pruitt, our recording secretary, is the proud grandmother.

Sister Darlene Engelke passed out the premium refund checks; also, you may get your 1981 passes from Sister Engelke. She also read the resolutions for Sister Wilma Briggs who passed away Saturday, December 27th, and for Brother James Crow, who passed away Thursday, December 18th.

Door prize winner was Brother Frank Miller.

Lodge No. 180 January Meeting Burleson

Dear Members and Friends: Our January meeting was called to order by President Dennis Barabas.

Brother Mike Hejl led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

We remained standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members.

President Barabas then introduced SL Vice President Bernard Gebala and his beautiful daughter, Bernadette.

Then we went into our unfinished election from our December meeting, which was for the Entertainment Committee. Vice President Gebala then installed our officers for 1981 and we want to thank him for doing us this honor.

Sister Sandra Barabas made a motion that we dispense with the reading of minutes from our December meeting because of our lengthy meeting; the motion carried.

Secretary Mike Hejl gave a report on the Trustees' meeting. President Barabas then announced the appointment for all the committees.

Financial Secretary Mydell Grochoske was ill with the flu and, when she recuperates, she will be going to the hospital for surgery.

We all wish her a speedy recovery.

We also have several other members on the sick list and we want to wish them all a speedy recovery.

A motion was made and a discussion followed to have our meetings changed from Thursday evenings to Sundays, hoping our attendance will improve. The vote was unanimous to have it on the second Sunday in the month at 2:30 p.m. for the time being, but that we may change the time later; so mark your calendar for February 8, at 2:30 p.m., and let's have a good attendance.

The door prize was won by Shirley Taylor.

We congratulated Brother Leo and Sister Oleta Keating who were celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary.

We were very happy to have Brother Sid Pokladnik and his lovely wife, Justine, with us.

There was a special cake made for SL Vice President Gebala and Brother Sid Pokladnik, District III director. Sister Joyce Russell presented the cake to our honored guests. We were very sorry that they had to leave right after the meeting and couldn't stay to eat.

The covered dish supper, we had, turned out to be a feast; everyone enjoyed it and the fellowship afterwards.

At our next meeting, we will have a covered dish supper again. I'll see you February 8th, at 2:30 p.m.

We held our January meeting Sunday, January 4th with President Bohac calling the meeting to order at 2 p.m. The pledge to the flag was recited by all members present.

The first order of business was the installation of officers for our lodge by Honorary President Joe Barabas, Jr. The following officers were installed: President D. I. Bohac, Vice President Terry Bertrand, Recording Secretary Alvin Martinets, Financial Secretary Clifton Martinets, Treasurer Glen Latham and Reporter Joe Barabas.

After the installation, the minutes from the December meeting were read by Secretary Martinets; they were adopted as read.

The lodge president thanked our members for the good cooperation he had from all the members during the past year.

In correspondence we had Christmas cards from Editor Rudy Sefcik and the security guards who work at our hall.

The chairmen of the various committees gave good reports for the month of December.

The following committees were appointed by the president and vice president for 1981. I am sorry to report that we lost a longtime member of our lodge, in the passing away of Mrs. J. W. (Josephine) Manda, a longtime resident of Holland where her husband was in the gin business, afterward moving to Granger and then to Taylor. She passed away in a Taylor nursing home Thursday, January 15, at the age of 92.

Once again I want to wish everyone of you a healthy and prosperous 1981 and make it a successful one.

We also had a resignation from one of our Board of Trustee members, Brother Dan Balusek. This was accepted with regrets, however, he surely has a valid reason for this.

Charlie Marek was elected to complete the one year term on the Board.

The meeting was then turned over to Brother Bernie Gebala, VicePresident of the Supreme Lodge, who, in turn, installed our new officers and Board members for the year 1981 and charged each one with their duties and obligations to the members of Lodge 47 and the SPJST organization.

Newly-elected President Alfred Klusacek then continued with the meeting starting with roll call of officers and Sales Representatives

by Secretary Dolores Skrabanek.

She continued with the reading of the minutes from the pre y A.,us meeting, mortuary dues from Supreme Lodge and correspondence. She reported paid-up policies: Rosemary Craft, Kimberly Craft, Anthony Motl, Gene Skrabanek, Marcia Skrabanek, Sherry Skrabanek and Theresa Motl. We were happy to hear that there was no one on the sick list.

President Klusacek again thanked Charlie and Leah Marek and all the people who helped in any way to prepare and serve the very delicious Christmas dinner. He also thanked Willie and Adeline Kohutek and their helpers for the preparation of the eggnog. The hall was beautifully decorated, and, although it is, a thing of the past, the memory of a beautiful Christmas party still lingers on, as it should be.

The officers and chairpersons were all asked to give their reports and all of them gave satisfactory reports.

New business included the appointments for the Planning and Improvement Committee, which were: Frank Maruna, Jerry Chupik, Woodrow Marek, Charlie Marek and Jerry Pechal.

On the Grievance Committee, Johnny Hruska, Anton Motl, Frank Hejl, Woodrow Marek and Floyd Stuteville were appointed.

The Resolution Committee will consist of: Adeline Kohutek, Dorothy Pechal and Anna Krcha.

On the Investigation Committee are: Elmer Skrabanek, Frances Hejl and Evelyn Heese.

The Maintenance Committee will be appointed in the February meeting so, if you are interested in being on, a committee, come to the meeting!

Sister Lillian Kosarek, secretary for the Board of Trustees, read the minutes from the last Board meeting.

Sister Shirley Patterson gave the youth report and outlined some of the activities the youth club is planning this year. SoUnds like they will have a busy and enjoyable 1981.

Our visitors included Jimmy Franklin (our unofficial photographer) and we thank him for a job well done; also his wife, Shirley and Marie Zvolanek, who is a very active Choral singer, Anna Hejl and Ed Billeck. We welcome all visitors and

hope ttrey will come visit us again.

January Lodge No. 88, Houston Meeting Report President Mildred Holeman called the January meeting to order at 7:34 p.m. Flag Bearer Lynn Pflughaupt presented the colors and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. The members stood in silent tribute to departed members; Frank J. Bohac, Linnie B. Sherron, Louis C. Turner and John J. Zemko.

President Holman introduced the new lodge officers and named all committees that were appointed by her and First Vice-President Larry Pflughaupt.

Secretary Clara Broz read the minutes of the December meeting which were approved as read. She then read all correspondence and, after reading a list of 15 applications for insurance, moved that they be accepted; motion seconded and passed.

All financial reports for December and the annual reports were read and approved.

Board Chairman Karl Lindemann reported on the election of board officers and subcommittees.

Reports were made announcing the beginning of rehearsal for 1981 for the Choral Club and Lodge 88 Orchestra. The Dramatic Club reported the casting of an English play to be held on 3/22/81.

Entertainment Chairwoman Wanda Kennedy announced the dances for January, Lodge 88 16th Anniversary Day 2/1/81 with dinner, social and dancing, repairing Ballroom chairs 1/21/81 and 4th of July picnic.

District V President Norval Grossman announced the District V meeting to be held in Needville on 3/8/81.

Members reported sick were Gus Gerlich, Doris Fluellen and Orlando Richards. `Happy Birthday' was sung to members having birthdays in January. Celebrating anniversaries were Harry and Lillian Finn, 50th; and Joe and Minnie Bravenec, 56th.

Visitors were Rena Ordener, Mary Supej and Albina Hilsher.

Door prize winners were Lad Bily, Herbert Huber, Lynn Pflughaupt and Lowrina Lindemann.

Christmas, New Year and Birthday Sentiments The inspiring season which brings most people close together in a friendly way is over again. In my opinion it would be a pleasure for everybody if this tradition could stay longer in practice (not only in December). This habit is carried over from one generation to another. It is known that the older generation is not in favor of new ideas. Our people are divided into many organizations and groups. In my opinion the situation is not healthy for any nation, and the whole world. There is no peace to come of which we preach most of the time at the Christmas season.

In my early years I was active to help organize several organizations.

The Sokol was No. 1 unit in 1909.

The names of the organizators were: Jindrich Fuegner and Miroslav Tyrs who organized the organization at Prague in Europe in 1862. The progressive immigrants took, with them, the Sokol idea. The first Sokol unit in US was organized 14th, February 1865 in St. Louis, Missouri; it spread to Texas in 1908. The first Southern District seat was in Ennis, Texas.

The American Sokol Organization is educational and physical culture:

Brother John Stasa is holding his great-granddaughter Stephanie Delores Perez, born October 10, 1980, and the daughter of Ted and Kathy Perez of Corpus Christi. She was also signed up into SPJST Lodge No. 79 by her great-grandfather. non-political and non-religious (neutral).

President of this Sokol local unit in Corpus Christi is Brother Gene Lehnert, who was master of ceremonies, for the Christmas occasion and asked the audience to watch Santa Claus come and also announced that there are bags filled with gifts to come and have some. Then when this was over, the kitchen was open and prepared food was to be served. The program started at 4 p.m. The generous mothers always donate their kitchen/bakery products. The food was free to all present in the audience. At 6:30 p.m., my dear daughter, Ann, took me home; my son-in-law (Ann's husband), Roy Peal, stayed there to help get the hall prepared for Monday night when the social games are played regularly, which start at 7 p.m. I do not know how all the buildings, with the unpaid mortgage notes, would exist without this income. Little children like to play with toys and when they grow up to adulthood, they start to play with hazardous things. In my opinion, our whole life is nothing, but a gamble.

Cheerful Gifts Wednesday morning, December 24th, Sokol member and Sister Christine Knapek delivered, to me, a large plate of her artistic baking.

The same morning my near neighbors, Mr. Lee and Mrs. Bobbie Martin, also delivered me some of her baking.

Next, my dear granddaughter,

Wednesday, January 28, 1981 — VESTNfK/7 Katherine Anna (Stasa) Perez, invited me to attend their Christmas supper. (At the same time I filled out an application for life insurance in SPJST to Lodge No. 79 for their new daughter; her name is Stephanie Delores Perez, (my greatgranddaughter), born 10 October 1980). There were 17 persons at the Christmas supper table. (Katherine Anna always loved children; now she is a mother of two lovely girls and has 32 children in her classroom.

This is the third year in teaching).

When all gifts had been distributed at about 7 p.m., Lwas taken home.

December 25th, I was invited to have Christmas dinner at my only son, Johnny and his dear wife, Elsie, Stasa's home. There were 15 persons at the table. There was also a Christmas tree with gifts for everyone who was present. I got back home at 8 p.m.

Then on December 27th, I attended a social supper at my dear daughter, Ann and Roy Peal's home.

December 31st, we celebrated my 90th birthday with 23 persons present in my lovely home. Some more gifts were distributed. Kodak pictures were snapped everywhere at 'this occasion with some different faces. At 7 p.m. my dear children, their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, once again, met to my great pleasure. It makes me happy to know that all have good health and occupations; the inflation does not hurt them, but it got me with my small income.

Greetings Greeting cards, telephone calls, etc., began coming December 9, 1980 and ended 3 January 1981; fiftyeight in all, they were from out of Texas: From Alois Slovacek II family of La Habra, California; Henry Kolar of San Diego, California; Mrs. Jarmila Kovar of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. F. J. Veskrma of Las Vegas, Nevada, also one from Mr. Frank Hejbal, a good old friend of mine who wrote that he was in the hospital in 1980 and later was attacked and robbed of $150 and also got beat up which left him in a miserable condition. (He is one of those musicians who was engaged in the band that played for the first president of Czechoslovakia, T. G. Masaryk, at his ceremonial installation in Prague). From Prague, he immigrated to New York, then to Hollywood, where moving pictures are made. Whin he retired, he sold his home in Beverly Hills and moved to Miami, Florida. (He was a composer and mailed me some copies of his works.)

At the Christmas party Sister Helen Pavelka said that Brother William Marek had an accident when he was repairing his home building. His step-ladder turned over with him and his hip was injured. Dear Brother William, I wish you a successful recovery. He and Sister Helen Pavelka are SPJST members of Lodge No. 177 in Robstown.

December 11th, I attended the SPJST annual meeting at 7 p.m., with my dear son-in-law, Roy Peal.

The Sokol gymnasts had a practice for their Christmas party and program; their Women's Director, Assistant Nancy Sijansky was in charge. It always interests me to watch all the active children in the hall in their gym classes. My parents were poor and not in a condition to give their children high school exitfttit(n,' btit 'taught us- to , know

how volnake an honest living.

After the social ended at 8 p.m., Lillie and I attended the celebration of New Year's Eve dance and my 90th birthday celebration. At 9 p.m., the Majek Orchestra played for the dancers. The SPJST and Sokol Hall was filled up with dancers and at 9:30 p.m., I heard my name announced that the next number, a waltz, is for me. I think that my dancing days are at an end. Sincere thanks, to the popular Majek Band.

(My right leg is improving, but it is not in condition to dance at this time). While listening to the musical melody and seeing dancers on the fine dance floor, kept me happy a few minutes. Later one of the Entertainment Committee members (who was the cashier) came to my table to give me $10 and said: "This is a compliment to you for being here with all of us." The admission was $20 for a couple; my partner was my daughter; Lillie.

During the second intermission, at 12:24 a.m., it was announced to get in line and get a plate of sausage, cornbread and black-eyed peas, a heritage habit or custom from the western European nations. The real friendship was shown by embracing with a kiss. At 12:30 a.m., we departed for our home. The dance ended at 2 p.m. I may say that the New Year's Eve dance was a sellout.

December 27, 1980 and January 3, 1981, on Radio Station KSIX in Corpus Christi, there was a "Polka Party" program from 9:15 to 11:45 a.m. that announced persons' names who have a birthday or wedding anniversary. My name was also mentioned and congratulated me on my 90th birthday. I wish to express my sincere thanks to Radio Station KSIX and also to all for the greeting cards, telephone calls and personal thoughts; there were 55 greeting cards by mail and many valuable gifts. This was the best birthday of the many years I've had before. It is a great honor and pleasure to have so many fine friends; I will never forget these new encouragements.

Many of my good local friends and fraternalists are missing, but they are in my memory forever. (In some of these families the younger generation is following in their footsteps.)

January 3rd, Lillie returned home and I miss her; all of this seems just like a dream to me.

January 8, 1981, I received the Vestnik in the new format and I stapled it because I don't want to lose some pages. I liked the older format better. It was good for 48 years and it should have not been changed for the few dollars. This format does not fit in my album and scrapbooks. The print is larger but less reading space. (I may be one of the conservative members who support what is practical.) In my 90 years of age, I am not inclined to accept some new unpractical ideas or changes. In my opinion the new format of our SPJST Vestnik is one step backward. The print is satisfactory but there is less material to read. The paper is of low quality size: 111/2 by 16 inches; it does not fit for the standard size with loose-leaf binder cover or album books size: 81/2 by 11 inches.

Whenever you fold it, it breaks. The old format was good for 48 years.

Why this no-good change? Saving $56,000 when the solvency is about 131 percent and surplus $5,000,000! nidyNe"eithi. ""foiitthe' "next`"

Additional News My daughter, Ann Peal, notified me that one of our Sokol members is in the Spohn Hospital. This was sad news for me to learn that Sister Christine Knapek is seriously ill. In her 72 years of life, she deserves a more pleasant life for all the efforts she has dedicated to her dear family, organizations and friends. I called Brother Eddie Knapek for information; he said, his lovely wife has improved. The medical science is in a wonderful stage of helping people's recovery. (When we celebrated the New Year we never knew what would happen to us before it would be over. Our destiny is, for us, inscrutable. I was, twice, in the hospital in 1980 and 10 times in my life; it started in November, 1963).

From deep in my heart, I wish for you, Sister Knapek, that your health returns soon and that you be up and about to take care of your sweet home and your dear husband, Eddie.

We all need you in our organizations.

The agenda will cover the regular reports, auditing committee report and any other items that need to be taken care of at this time. The "gathering," after the meeting, will take place as always.

In our January meeting, the normal reports were given and the vice-president's job has not been filled and voting on it has been postponed; so, Brother Sperlik still will not be relieved of his duties.

The membership present voted to donate money, for a new ambulance, to the East Bernard Emergency Medical First Response Group. This is a group of trained volunteer EMT's who make emergency medical calls. Also voted on and passed was an increase in pay for the Board of Trustees.

The door prize was won by Sister Frances Haverda.

The social "gathering," after the meeting, was enjoyed by everyone present. The lodge furnished some of the sandwiches and liquid refreshments. Sisters Haverda, Sperlik, Foytik, Janik, Luquette and Nezval furnished the rest to complete the meal.

Bryan — College Station Lodge No. 189 Reports on Monthly Meeting Dear Members: Our January meeting was called to order Sunday, January 11th, at the KC Hall in Bryan. President David Storm presided over the meeting.

After the reading of the reports, the 1981 officers were installed.

Officers for this year are: President — David Storm, Vice President — Derek Shultz, Secretary — Joseph Polasek, Financial Secretary — Charlene Helton, Treasurer — John Skrabanek, Parliamentarian — Don Helton and Reporter — Jan Skrabanek.

We hope to have some fundraising projects this year Our first project is a garage sale to be held sometime in March. All members are asked to clean out their closets and donate whatever they can to help out the lodge. We will finalize the plans next month and let you know the details.

We will, once again, be meeting the second Sunday of each month at the KC Hall in Bryan. Our next meeting will be February 8, at 3:30 p.m. The Board of Trustees are asked to meet prior to the meeting, at 3 p.m. We would like to encourage all members to attend and enjoy the fellowship of Lodge No. 189.

On behalf of the lodge, I would like to express my thanks to Jerry Vytopil for serving as our reporter for the last two years. We certainly appreciate the work he has done.

14th Meeting of Lodge No. 177, Academy January

Dear Readers: Our January 14th meeting was called to order by President Jerry Tomastik.

Special guest was SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr., and member also special guest, State Youth Director Jann Thomas.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the membership.

President Tomastik then turned the meeting over to Brother Jerry Mikulas, Jr. to install our 1981 officers. Before the officers were installed Brother Mikulas gave the past and present officers and the membership high praises for the many outstanding things Lodge No. 177 has done; he also recognized the many good deeds and the many donations made by this lodge. He also said if the membership keeps growing, we could very easily be in the top ten lodges. Brother Jerry then installed the 1981 officers. The new officers are: President Jerry Tomastik, 1st Vice-President Rae Lisenbe, 2nd Vice-President Cecil LaGrange, Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe, Financial Secretary Helen Bland, Treasurer Josi Tomastik, and Youth Leader Carol Meredith. Let us everyone support our officers, our Board of Trustees and

committee chairmen; they are doing an outstanding job.

Brother Mikulas also gave Dorothy Massey praise for her outstanding job she has done as State Youth Director. He then introduced Jann Thomas as the new State Youth Director. Thank you, Brother Jerry for installing our officers; please come back any time, we enjoy having you.

All committee chairmen gave good reports. There were many activities going on at the lodge during the month of December. All persons worked hard; without this, we wouldn't have the progress we do.

Dwayne Sefcik gave the Board of Trustees report of the January 7, 1981 meeting; all trustees were present, except Duane Meredith.

They decided to obtain new stall doors for the ladies bathroom; hand dryers for all bathrooms have been ordered. Smaller tables have been ordered from Royal Seating of Cameron; also mentioned was that two new cash registers with tapes were discussed and sodding the new land with grass to prevent erosion, also.

President Tomastik asked for the reading of new members' names, they are: Jerimy Diane Shelley, Barbara Jan Dubec, Natalie Dawn Dubec, Emil Doyle Dubec, Albert L. Baker, Jeanette Suezanne Driska, Wanda Jann Thomas, John Stanley Thomas, Jr., and Reuben R. Castillo; thanks sales representatives for a job well done and thanks to the members for selecting Lodge No. 177. These new members were accepted into the lodge by the voting membership.

President Tomastik asked for correspondence. Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe read a letter from the Bell County Livestock Show asking for a donation. Rae Lisenbe made a motion to donate $150; a second to this motion was made by Dwayne Sefcik.

Youth Leader Carol Meredith gave the youth report. The youth meeting was very well-attended; all together there were 18 youth members and 4 adults, plus special guest, Jann Thomas, state youth director. Youth Leader Carol Meredith reported the youth members will have a Valentine dance, February 13 with "Something Special" playing all kinds of good music. She reported that all the youth clubs in District II have been invited; also parents and invited guests. January 24th, the youth members will meet at the lodge at 11 a.m. to clean every chair in the lodge. January 27th is game night, the youth club will have a bake sale. Anyone wishing to donate to the club may do so. You may contact any youth club member or Carol Meredith; Carol also recognized the people who cleaned and painted the youth room and the floor was cleaned and waxed. These people are: Frances Love, Jessie Washbourne, Pat Tomastik, Carol Meredith and Rae Lisenbe.

The lodge has purchased new tables from Royal Seating of Cameron; these tables are 8 feet long and two feet wide and will make it much easier getting to the dance floor. We will be selling the tables we now have; they will sell for $40 to members and $50 to nonmembers. The size of these tables is 8 feet long and 30 inches wide; you

can purchase these tables at the lodge on Tuesday and Saturday nights. The number of the lodge is (817) - 982-4512. Wilbert Ramm has the list of people wanting to purchase tables.

The meeting was adjourned and a happy hour followed.

No. 88 Houston News Lodge

Our Saturday night dance with the Polka Band, which always is well-attended, was in charge of Henry Kite and his wife, Adele, at the door with Bessie Vasula greeting the guests. This was one time Henry Vasula was not present with his wife; he was nursing the Flu bug at home in bed; get better and well, Henry! Ruth Watkins and Lester Zappe made up the Hosting Committee and the ladies, as usual, looked great.

Sunday, January 18th, a wonderful couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Lodge No. 88 with 400 invited guests to make it a memorable day for Harry and Lillian Finn. Sister Lillian is our lodge parliamentarian and reports in English for the Birthday Club Sisters; she is very active and her husband, Harry, helps in any way possible. The Chandelier Ballroom was filled with jolly guests to share the festivities with Lillian and Harry on this special day. The bride, dressed in a coral chiffon gown with a beautiful corsage and the groom, handsome as ever, were surrounded by their family: one daughter, Evelyn Fay Mikulin and husband, Bennie; two grandsons, Bill Mikulin with wife, Bess, of Midland, Tx. and Berry Mikulin (the youngest) and granddaughter, Bennett, and husband, Antonio Saez; two lovely great-grandchildren, Kelly, age 4 and Kristene Mikulin almost one year and also the only sister of Lillian, Mrs. Evelyn Stephenson.

Refreshments were served all through the evening by Nat Gonzales, Lou Harrell and Earl Hatfield. The invocation was given

by District V Director Louis Hanus before the buffet dinner was served.

The delicious buffet was catered and served by the Jerry Mikeska Catering Service of Columbus, Tx. The pastry table was loaded with a variety of home-baked pastries by friends. For dancing the music of Henry Tannenberger filled the Chandelier Ballroom. The wedding march was led by the well-known couple Noel and Wanda Kennedy followed by the wedding party and friends and then the anniversary couple danced to the song "Where Is My Love" by our song-bird Helen Hegwood accompanied by the band.

Lillian appreciated the help of Rosalee Kostom, Mickey Rice, Margerette Liebscher and Gladys Havemann in decorating the tables and the lobby that held a huge center piece of pink Azalias grown

by Rosalee Kostom. Registering guests was attended by Michael Hilsher and the lovely blue flowers with gold trimming were pinned on

by Donnie Havemann and Cindy and Carrol Hilsher. Both wish to thank

Ed Zientek, Joe Miksch, Criss Lotte, Johnnie Broz, Pearl Hilsher, Flo Taake and Gladys Havemann for all the help extended them to make this their perfect day. At the closing of the party the microphone was handed to Harry, the groom, to sing the song "Old San Francisco" and was he good! Congratulations and many more!

Brother Henry Dvorak and his spouse, Polly, winged in from Norman, Oklahoma to visit with parents Frank and Frances Dvorak, also, their daughter, Elsie drove in with husband, George Kadera of McKinney, Tx. to visit with their parents over the weekend. Next week Henry will fly to attend a business meeting in Florida and Polly will accompany him. Their skiing trip to Colorado was, in a way, disappointing as the snow and cold weather were not exactly up to par.

Now they are flying to Florida; maybe they will be lucky to run into some real cold weather. Who knows?

Brother Tom Jecmenek, with a round of friends, celebrated his 39th birthday (that's what he said) on New Year's Eve at the lodge dance welcoming the New Year and finally admitted it was his 77th. Happy Birthday, Tom. Mr. Edmund Pflughaupt, Sr. father of our member, Leander Pflughaupt passed away Friday, January 16, 1981, at the age of 88 years in LaGrange, Tx. Funeral services were held Monday, January 19, 1981 at 2 p.m. in the United Methodist Church in Industry, Tx. Mr. Edmund Pflughaupt was laid to rest in the New Ulm Cemetery.

Surviving him are: wife, Selma Pflughaupt; one brother, Arthur of San Antonio, Tx.; three sons, Edmund Jr. of Columbus, Tx.; Leander Pflughaupt of Houston, Tx. and Glenn of Fayetteville, Tx.; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. We express our deepest sympathy to the surviving family.

May he rest in peace.

Sister Anna Petrzelka, a dear friend of mine, passed away Friday, January 16, 1981 at the age of 83 years. She was a resident of Cypress for 56 years and the widow of the late William Petrzelka who preceded her in death, Anna was a member of SPJST Lodge Stefanik No. 142 and also a member of the Sokol; she was a native of Czechoslovakia and came to this land February 12, 1920. Funeral services were held at Kleins Funeral Home in Tomball, Tx. with Rev. G. Drake officiating. She was laid to rest in Fritsce Cemetery. Survivors: two sons, Charles and Willie Petrzelka, both of Houston; five grandchildren, one great-grandson and one brother in Czechoslovakia. Our deepest sympathy to the family.

Our 17th anniversary celebration will be this coming Sunday, February 1st, which is quite an affair. A delicious dinner will be served, starting at 11:30 a.m., a social from 2 to 4 p.m. and a dance with the Joe Patek band playing from 5 to 9 p.m.

Dear Members and Guests: Our last monthly meeting took place the second Monday of the month of January as is the case every month. Prior to the meeting, the officers and Board of Trustees were installed by Brother Ralph Smith. The officers are as follows: President — James Wilcox, 1st Vice President -- Hughie Smith, 2nd Vice President — Jeff Moore, Secretary — Creola Wilcox, Financial Secretary — Hazel Smith, Treasurer — Mary McInnis, Youth Leader — Linda Michka.

The Board of Trustees include: Jerry Michka, Dorothy Smith, Ray Johnson, Ben Ervin, Chester Shmoldas, James Wilcox and Andy Fowler.

Chairmen on the various committees are Refreshment -- Jerry Michka, Grounds — Chester Shmoldas, Kitchen — Ben Ervin, Historical -- Dorothy Smith, Creola Wilcox, Mary McInnis, Entertainment — Creola Wilcox, Bulletin Board -- Peggy Johnson, Grievance -- Ray Johnson, Bill McInnis, Faye Fowler, Auditing — Ralph Smith, Ray Johnson, Ticket Window — Mary McInnis, Opening /Closing of Lodge -- James Wilcox, Maintenance -- Hughie Smith and Ray Johnson.

There has been quite a bit of repair work done in the two bathrooms; complete new paneling of the women's bathroom had been done by James Wilcox, Hughie Smith, Ray Johnson, Bill McInnis and Sam Albright. All work was donated by these dedicated hardworking members. We all appreciate all who are doing so much for the lodge.

Our dancing fans were entertained by the Country Tymes.

We had "a good crowd and everybody had a wonderful time. We had quite a few professional people who are members of our lodge; they really had a great time. Several people from Lufkin were with us for the first time; they are all anxious to join; they really praised our lodge.

Of course, again, we had Glenn Hughins from Rusk, Texas and about ten couples who came along to enjoy our lodge facilities. We are always happy to have guests come to our lodge to enjoy themselves.

We are constantly having more people joining our SPJST Society.

They are: Billy Ray Winter of Pearland, Texas; Willie James Faison, Richard Gordon Petterson, James Scott Davidson, Ray Loveless, all of Crockett; Toby Ray Barnett of Palestine; Billy Jack Wright of Elkhart; Hollis W. Moore, Mary Joyce Moore, both of Lovelady and Nancy B. Wells and Charles Moffett, both of Grapeland.

All of you know that I really appreciate all of you members helping me find new prospects.

Brother Larry Wayne Thomas in Palestine is really a lot of help finding new prospects; he got three prospects just this past month; also many others are spreading good words for our SPJST and that is great and that is appreciated by the whole SPJST Society.

Dear Readers: Our regular monthly lodge meeting was held at 7 p.m. January 14th. We had three guests present.

They were Brother Dan Balusek, Eugene Marak and Anna Marak.

The meeting was, called to order

by President Ann Balusek with the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present.

Minutes of our December meeting were read and approved as read. In addition, the treasurer's and committee reports were also approved as read.

Discussion was held on new rules and regulations for the hall and it was decided, that the chairman of the Rules and Regulations Committee draw up a rough outline to be ap proved at our February meeting.

A card of, acknowledgement on the donation to the American Cancer Society was presented by President Ann Balusek.

After the business meeting, a social was held with cold cuts and sandwiches were served. Sisters Pat Hillman and Ann Balusek were honored on their birthdays since both are celebrants in January.

Our next meeting will be held February 11 at 7 p.m. All members are asked to attend and enjoy the fellowship.

Dear Members and Friends: Just a few lines to say we hope all our members had a glorious Holiday Season. We held election of officers at our last meeting and the new officers for 1981 are: President — Alvin J. Sefcik, 1st Vice President — John Valusek, 2nd Vice President — Claude O'dinot, Secretary — Mary Lou Huepers, Financial Secretary — Bessie Findley, Treasurer — Josephine Hitchcock and Flagbearer — Clarence Fee. This year we are planning to enter the festival at the Moody Center, again. We are going to need lots of help from all of our members; it should be sometime in July; the dates are not known yet.

We have been "hit" with the flu bug. Brother Willie Huepers and his daughter, Lori, have both been bitten by it. We hope they are feeling better now.

There have been some questions as to where we will continue to have our meetings; for now, until further notice, we will have them at 407 Ling in Bayou Vista.

Our next meeting is set for February 18 at 6:30 p.m.; come out and have a good time with all of us.

Dear Members: Our meeting was called to order.

The flag was presented by Neal Hoelscher who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We then remained standing in silence for our deceased members.

Our officers were installed by SL Vice President Bernie Gebala. He led them in an oath which they all repeated after him; it was what their responsibilities are that they, as officers, are here to serve the members and should not be partial to any one member, but to treat everyone as brothers and sisters, so help them God. After which our newly-elected President Dan Sebek presided in our meeting.

On our sick list, we have Brother Fabian Klecka who had surgery; also Sister Maureen Necas is in a rest home recuperating from her accident. We wish both of them and, any member we don't know about who may be ill, a speedy recovery.

The members voted on giving Sister Maureen Necas $200 to help her in her extra expense, for when someone has an accident which takes long recuperating they have added expenses, that insurance does not cover.

We decided to give a donation to the Bell Youth Fair and Livestock Show of $100.

The Board acted on the matter of a donation to the Clarence Psencik family of $200 for the damage sustained when their house'partially burned.

We want to thank Brother Alan Tyroch and Brother Charles Amos for typing and printing the Rules and Regulations without cost so all the members who wish could have a copy; they are available to you at the meetings.

It was brought to our attention that we need booster chairs for our youngsters and Sister LaVada Geistman volunteered to purchase them.

Sister Louise Zavodny was appointed to take the pictures for this year.

The Auditing Committee was appointed and they are Brothers Terry Taylor, Curtis Schneider and Charlie Joe Waits.

The members decided to have a Social Committee and we have these volunteers: Sisters Norma Andel, Pat Vanicek, Pat Sebek and President Dan Sebek.

We welcome these new members: Frank J. Marek sold by Sales Representative Norma Andel; Lisa Kay Spanhel, sold by Sales Representative Milton Zavodny. Conversions we have are: Dale Marek by Sales Representative Franklin Martinec; and Lisa Marek by Sister Norma Andel.

Having birthdays in January who were present were Sister Shirley Waits, Brother Joe Haisler, and visitor, SL Vice Preiident Bernie Gebala.

Those having an anniversary were Brother Ronnie and Sister Carolyn Dorner and, to all members who are celebrating these occasions, best wishes!

Friendship Club Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends, Once again, after 19 years, I will try and clean out the cobwebs, pick up a pen, and report the activities for an organization. In the past, I had reported for Sokol Fort Worth.

The Friendship Club membership is composed of various lodge members and friends. It meets at 10:30 a.m. the first Wednesday of each month at the St. Thomas Church Club Room. New members and guests are always welcome.

Our monthly meeting January 7th, was called to order by President Marie Tesar. Due to the illness of Jennie Kroll, who was in Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Eva Dockery and guest, Mary Pavey, assisted Rose Steinman as hostesses.

The "Happy Birthday" song echoed through the walls for Eva Dockery and for Frank Kovar, who was not present.

It is always good to have Mary and Benny Pavey as our guests.

After all have partaken of a delicious covered dish luncheon, our men folk always enjoy an afternoon of domino games, while the ladies are also enjoying fellowship in their games.

The February 4th hostesses will be Gertrude Johnston, Rosemary Gribble and Vernon Prichard, if weather permits.

Ladies' Circle, Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Believe it or not, our Texas weather is running true to form.

Here it is the middle of January, supposed to be winter, and instead you would think it was a bright Spring day.

As your new reporter, I will endeavor to bring you the news to the best of my ability. Our meeting was held January 8th, with the majority of our group attending.

Everyone brought a covered dish for our luncheon and everything was very delicious.

Since this was the beginning of our New Year, our officers were installed. The installing officer was Ann Polk. Each officer held up a letter, which at the end of the installation spelled out THANKS. The officers installed were Julie Dueser — President; Bessie Prochaska — Vice President; Clara Marchioni --Secretary; Aurora Maldino -Treasurer. The ceremony was very effective and enjoyed by all.

Several of our members were out ill; among those that were reported ill were: Joe Merlick, Albina and Joe Kuban, Albina Farek, Jennie Kroll.

Florence Greer was in Medical Plaza Hospital with another eye surgery, but after dismissal had the flu. Carl Zich had surgery at All Saints Hospital, and at the time of this writing, has spent five weeks there.

We all wish him a speedy recovery.

Vicki Palachek, granddaughter of Mary Palachek, who is a student at the University of Colorado, fell while on a trip to California with a gym group from the University and injured her leg. She underwent surgery for a pulled ligament Her mother, Vivian Palachek, flew to Denver to be with her daughter.

While writing this, I received news that SPJST Lodge No 92 has lost two of our dear members: Mrs. Millie (Charlie) Bartek, and Mrs. Helen (Johnnie) Skrasek. We extend our deepest sympathy to each family.

A delayed donation of $25 was sent to our Fraternal S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor for Christmas and $100 was contributed to our Lodge No 92 to be applied towards the cost of the revolving crystal ball for the dance floor.

Attention Members: Don't forget to pay your Circle dues for the year ($2. for each one).

Mary Powers was appointed Hostess Chairman and is making a new list of eligible members for 1981. Each member is requested to bring a covered dish to the February meeting. Oh yes, we are in for a treat, as our President Julie Dueser has arranged with Texas Electric for a 30 minute film of Comanche Peak.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of Lodge No. 68, Nelsonville, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister MARY J. SHUPAK,

who passed away Wednesday, December 3, 1980 in Colonial Belle Nursing Home in Bellville, at the age of 86 years.

Sister Shupak, born 4 April 1894 in the Nelsonville Community, was the daughter of Frank and Rosalie Sisa.

She was a member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church, the Christian Sisters of the church, and SPJST Lodge No. 68, Nelsonville.

Funeral services were held from the Nelsonville Brethren Church at.

2 p.m. Friday, December 5, with Rev. Gordon Hejl officiating. Burial was in the National Cemetery near Nelsonville.

The former Mary Theresa Sisa was married to John R. Shupak, 10 October 1913 in ceremonies performed in Nelsonville by Rev. Anton Motycka. Her husband, Mr. Shupak died 26 January 1927.

Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Celia Zettel of Industry, Mrs. Vlasta Zettel of Nelsonville; sons, Ben Shupak of Bleiblerville, Willie Shupak of Industry, Edwin and Elgin Shupak, both of Nelsonville; sister, Mrs. Albina Macat of Bellville; brother, John Sisa of Bleiblerville; 15 grandchildren; 16 greatgrandchildren; and 3 great-greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter; three sisters and one brother.

Serving as pallbearers included her grandsons: Clarence Zettel, Edwin Shupak, Jr., Kenneth Shupak, Jimmy Zettel, Gary Shupak, Terry Shupak.

May our departed sister rest in peace.

My se ve 12:30 rozloučili a jeli domů se vyspat. Taneční místnost byla dobře naplněná. Hudba vyhrávala do 2 hodin po půlnoci. Návštěva byla nad očekávání velká přes to, že každá taneční místnost pořádala podobné oslávování.

Dne 27. prosince 1980 a 3. ledna 1981 na stanici KSIX při programě "Polka Party" od 9 do 11:45 hodin jsou oznámovaná jména, kdo a komu je' věnováno číslo hudby k narozeninám a svatebních výročím.

Moje jméno bylo také oznamováno.

Vánočních, novoročních a narozenin­ ových blahopřání bylo celkem 55.

Považuji si to za velkou poctu a pozornost mi věnovanou, nejsem si jistý, zda-li jsem všem oplatil blaho­ přejnými kartami poštou zaslanými a nebo poděkoval jinak. Všichni jste mi způsobilivelkou radost vašimi vzpom­ ínkami . a povzbuzením do dalších roků. Vážim se všeho, co kdo pro mne učinil dobrého po čas mojého zde pobýtu mezi vámi. Moji mnoholetí přátelé na mne pamatují. Příliš mnoho jich odešlo na věčny odpočinek. V několika případech jejích mladší pokolení zaujímá jejich místo.

Dne 3. ledna dcera Lillie odjela domů. Její manžel a dcery používály telefon v podávání si přihodilých denních zpráv. Je zde zase prázdno a mně zůstáváji jen vzpomínky jak na zašlý sen.

Dárky, které jsem obdržel, mohu upotřebit, ale neměli si dělat se mnou také velké vydání.

Končím s přáním všem dobrého zdraví, spokojenosti a zdaru v nastá­ vajícím roku.

Dodatek První výtisk číslo 1 ze dne 7. ledna 1981 jsem obdržel 8. ledna ve změněne formě, velikost větší, tisk o nečo větší, měně četby a volně listy.

To zvětšené písmo mne uspokojilo, avšak to zvětšení a volné listy neu­ spokojilo. Mám po ruce strojek, s kterým jsem sepnul ony lfsty, abych je měl pohromadě; to by ještě ušlo, ale ta velikost těch lístů mi nepasuje vkládat do desek albumových, neboť knihových vazeb o 8112 x 11 palcích.

Jamám na skladě několik ročníků, které nevezmou mnoho zvláštního místa. Tyto budou potřebovat zvláštní široké police. Při čtení je to také málo praktické. Každý nemá strojek na lfsty volné sepnout a nebo sklížit, ani široké police. Přelomením na půl lístu 111/4 x 16 palců se kazí, nízké hodnoty papír. Možná ty 4 roky do příštího sjezdu, ukážou, zda-li to šetření bylo nutné. Nevím, jak mnoho spolků používa takový nepraktický formát.

Další dodatek Dcera Anička Peslova uvědomila, kde naše členka tělocvičné jednoty Sokol Corpus Christi, Texas, se nachází v Spohn nemocnici. Velice mně to zarmoutilo, neb ona spolu­ sestra Kristinka Knapková si ve svém věku zasloužila přijemnější pobyt zde mezi námi. Hned na to jsem tele­ fonoval spolubratru Eddie Knápkovi zeptat se, co se stalo a jak pokračuje.

Rád jsem od něho uslyšel, že je na tom lepší. To její dobrosrdečné srdce začalo stávkovat. Lekařská věda dělá dívy a velký pokrok na poli uzdrávení a úlevy. Žádný nevíme co nám ten nový rok přinese. Jest to nevyzpytatelný osud nás všech. Já, když jsem před rokem vstupoval do nového roku, jsem neočekával, že 16. ledna 1980 budu dovezen do nemocnice Memorial Medical Center s poraněnou nohou, pak později 31. října s vnitřním krvácením. Vezme to trpělivost, sebezapření snášet ty bolesti.

Z hloubi mého srdce a mnoho jiných je přáno paní Kristine Knápkové, aby se brzy uzdravila a zase, vrátila se domů, kde ji hodný manžel Eddie potřebuje a všeci spolkaři a přátele.

Nedávno v Ennis měla sl. Jeanette Rejčková svatbu s p. Joel Henning v kostele sv. Jana. Ona jest dcerou manželů Edward Rejčkových a vnučkou pí. Joe Vranové (rozená Faraizlová) z Ennis a též vnučkou p.

John Rejčka z Abbott. Vychodila enniskou vyšší školu a nyní jest zaměstnaná u Southland Life Insurance zde v Dallas. Ženich jest synem manželů Jack Henning ových. Také vyšel vyšší školu v Ennis a nyní jest elektrikářem u firmy H & H Electric a těž společníkem North­ side Gulf Service Station v Ennis.

Rev. Lawrence Haberman spojil mladé lidi svazkem manželským.

Varhanicí byla pí. Joan Hykel-ova, a pí. Ronnie Veselková, sl. Anna Musicková a mladý pan Paul Janečka (všichni sestřenice a bratranec nevěsty) zpívali a byli vyprovázení na kytárách panama David Gaiserem, Ronnie a Kenneth Veselkovými. Tito též býlí příbuzní nevěsty. Kostel byl vyzdoben bílými a modrými květinami u oltáře. Recepce byla na KJT síni a všichní se měli dobře. Po svatbě jeli na cestu do Las Vegas a nyní jsou v Ennis. Vše dobré jim přejeme.

Také v Ennis p. Karel Šmolka oznámil zasnoubení své dcery sl.

Mary Jane s p. Doug Smith a svatba se bude konat v kostele sv. Jana v 8 hodin večer 13. února. Po svatbě pak bude recepce na KJT síni. Příbuzní a přátelé dvojicejsou zvaní na svatbu.

Gratulujeme dvojici a přejeme vše dobré.

Tak nám předpovídají, že prý letos budeme míti velmi mírné a suché počasí přes celou zimu až do jara. Ale při tom vyslovili obavu, že nedosta­ neme moc vláhy což by bylo velmi zle pro farmáře neboť prý sedm milionů akrů pšenice jest již nasázené a jistě potřebují dosti deště prěs zimu a jaro aby psenice mohla rost a udělat dobrou úrodu. Jestli nezaprší tak semeno nevzklíčí a bude po všem. To horko a sucho způsobilo za 870 milionů dolarů škody na úrodách a asi

700 milionů dolarů škody na dobytku a drůbeži a to jistě nejsou malé škody.

A kdyby se měl letos opakovat ten samý špatný rok tak by neoktoerí farmáři jistě přišli na mizinu.

Doufejme tedy, že brzy aspoň trochu nám zaprší a vše se zlepší.

Bylo mě sděleno, že v Ennis náš dlouholetý přítel p. Jim Pavelka náhle onemocněl a musel být dovezen do nemocnice. Doufáme ale, že p.

Pavelka zase brzy okřeje a zas bude zdráv. Velice nás to prěkvapilo a neradi jsme to slyšeli, neboť ho známe již od dětství a jeho paní byla z Česko-moravské vysočiny odkud pocházeli Houdkovi také. Přejeme příteli všechno dobré a na shledanou brzy.

Známý krajan a hudebník p. Ray C. Bača z Fayetteville, který zesnul v prosinci ve věku 87 let v nemocnici sv. Lukáše v Houstonu byl pohřben na městský hřbitov ve Fayetteville.

Obřady vykonal dp. Ben Mazurkie­ wicz. Jeho rodiče byli Frank J. a Marie (Kovář) Bačovi a v 1915 se oženil se sl. Antonii Kovářovou.

Patřil ku spolku Rytířy Kolumbovi a SPJST. Byl čilý až do pozdního věku a hrával na leckteré krajanské oslavě a i na Texas Folklife festivalu v San Antonio na tom 100 let starým dulcimer (cymbal) a byl známý myslím po celém Texasu. Jezdil se svým synem Gilbertem Bačou a snachou Florence na ty oslavy a pos­ ledně jsme ho viděli v Seaton asi před třemi lety kdy na tamní SPJST síni účinkoval. Zanechal dceru pí. Alžbětu McKirahan v Houstonu; pět synů Leonard v Ellinger, Jerome F. a Gilbert v Houstonu, Raymond, ml. a Kermit ve Fayetteville; čtyři sestry: pí. Annie Šťastná a pí. Millie Kulhánková rovněž ve Fayetteville a pí. Betty Tschiedelová a pí. Julie Chalupová, obě v Crosby; 12 vnoučat a 10 pravnoučat. Jeden syn a dcera, 5 bratrů a tři sestry jej předešli na věčnost. Zesnulému přejeme klidný spánek a rodině vyslovujeme naší soustrast.

Ve Ft. Worth zemřela pí.

Marguerite Oswaldová ve věku 73 let po delší nemoci. Ona byla matkou Lee Harvey Oswalda, který v 1963 zabil presidenta John F. Kennedyho, ale ona řfkala do poslední chvíle, že její syn to nespáchal ale prý se to svedlo na něho. Žila prý v dosti těsných poměrech a když někde přednášela o synovi a jak to vše tehdy bylo, tak ráda přijmula příspěvek za to.

Myslím, že asi nikdy se jistotně nedovíme jak se to vše sběhlo a kdo onu vraždu vykonal. Výslechy byly ale nic se nevynašlo. V kalifornské poušti zvané "Mojave Desert" jistý 48 letý člověk jménem Jay Lint konečně našel "žílu" čistého zlata po 24. letech horečného kopání a rýpání.

V 1974 byl tak šťastný a lopata jeho našla tu zlatou "nitku" a nyní on a jeho pět společníků našli investory kteří jim pomohli zařídit tu společnost která se jmenuje "American Progress Mining", a jelikož nyni budou míti i potřebné stroje, tak prý denně produkce kovu bude obnášet 500 tun namísto 50 tun a na každou tunu připadne prý 3 unce čistého zlata a to prý bude mít cenu skoro milion dolarů denně. A také prý se tam nachází i dost stříbra, tedy se to jistě vyplatí. Jistě žádný si nepomyslel, že tato poušť kdysi vydá něco tak cenného jako to zlato a stříbro, že ano?

Pan Jos. Vlk již se nachází doma a ač jest ještě trochu slabý prěce pokračuje dobře po operaci. Velmi rádi jsme slyšeli, že je doma u své

rodiny a doufáme, že každým dnem bude to lepší.

Tak zítra již bude nastolen náš nový president - čtyřicátý v pořadí - a žádný z nás nevíme, jaký bude, zda bude lepší než byl p. Carter anebo ne.

Má těžkou cestu před sebou a jistě zažije mnohé svízele a trpkosti.

Doufám ale, že snad bude moci překonat to nejhorší v jeho úřade.

Budeme jistě rádi jestli ti naší lidé budou osvobození z toho žaláře v Iranu a přijedou domů ke svým milým v dobrém stavu. Snad se nám to brzy vyplní.

4. Do dějin vstupují Slované Od třetino tisíciletí neexistoval již původní jednotný indoevropský jazyk, nýbrž , v různých oblastech Evropy a části Asie se vyvíjely samostatné indoevropské jazyky.

Už před začátkem našeho letopočtu sídlil mezi Vislou a Dněprem lid, který mluvil jednotným slovanským jazykem. Dnes mu říkáme pra­ slovanština. Slované vstoupili tedy do dějin ještě před začátkem našeho letopočtu. Jejich území neby.lo právě nejbohatší, ale zato jim skýtalo poměrné bezpečí. Přečtěte si, jak líčí starou vlast slovanskou Vladislav Vančura: V hlubinách věků pokrýval severní hranice známých krajin les a táhl se v šíř í dál po okrsích světa. Hvozd stínil ty nesmírné země.

Hradba pralesa uzavírala ty nesmírné prostory . a národové, kteří sídlili v těch končinách, žili \ sami sobě.

Mezi povodím řeky, kteřá se nazývala Visla, a proudem, jemuž jejméno Dněpr, ležela stará vlast slovanská. Na severu svažovala se ke nízkému pobřeží moře Baltického a na straně polední ohraničovalo ji horstvo, jemuž se dostalo jména Karpaty. Byl to kraj mírně zvlněný, kraj stojatých vod, kraj jezer, rybníků a bašin, kraj záplav dostavujících, se třikrát do roka, kraj řek zvolna plynoucích, kraj řek, jež obtáčejí ostrůvky a jež se větví v nespočetná ramena plná ryb. Sirý hvozdustoupil na mnoha místech té země vodám a močályse střely mezi pahorky maličko zvýšenými a mezi lesy a háji.

Různá havěť hemžila se pak v hlubinách i po mělčině: lososi pluli středem proudu, čáp stál na močálech a ptačí hejna kroužila nad rákosím.

Hezky líčí Vl. Vančura naši slovan­ skou pravlast, viďte? Ale život v ní nebyl tak rajský, jak by se zdálo. Naši praslovanští předkově měli dost starostí, aby zabezpečili svou existenci. A protože jich přibývalo, začaly se některé skupiny (mluvícíasi už různými slovanskými nářečími) stěhovat do nových sídel. Původní obyvatelstvo buď vytlačili, podrobili anebo i vyhubili. Časem se z jejich slovanských nářečí vyvíjely samosstatně slovanské jazyky. Tato expanze slovanská a vznik samostatných slovanských jazyků se odehrály převážně v prvních stoletích po začátku našeho letopočtu.

Slované mluvící nářečím, z něhož se časem vyvinula čeština a slovenština, usídlili se v dnešních Čechách a na Moravě, na Slovensku, v části Slezska a Rakous. Na sever od nich se usídlili Slované, z jejichž nářečí později vznikl jazyk lužickosrbský (hornolužiětina a dolnolužiětina) a jazyk Polabských Slovanů a Pomořanů, Slované sídlícína východě vytvořili polštinu.

Sídla Polabských Slovanů byla postupně dobývána německými panovníky a obyvatelstvo tam sídlící bylo poněmčeno. V 18. stol. zanikly poslední zbytky Slovanů mluvících polabským slovanským jazykem. , Dnes je!l mnohá zeměpisná jména (např. Lubeck z :Cubici-: naše Libice)
