gorcizn (WEciciing agrzrziv-Etlaty Mr. and Mrs. William Lesikar of 1513 Hillside Drive in Fort Worth celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday night, November 29, 1980 with a reception at Colonial Country Club.

Hosts were their children and their spouses, Mr. and Mrs. John Stevens Hungerpiller of North Augusta, North Carolina, and Mr. and Mrs. Lynwood W. Lesikar of Fort Worth.

The Lesikars were married 27 November 1930, in Rogers, Texas, and have lived in Fort Worth 41 years.

He is a retired building contractor.

They have seven grandchildren

and two great-grandchildren.

The Lesikars, and their families are also members of SPJST Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth. ***

Andrew ("Andy") Marek, 59, passed away in a Taylor hospital the morning of Tuesday, January 13th.

Funeral services were held at. St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taylor Friday, January 16th. Bro. 1Vlarek was a longtime member of Lodge 29, Taylor, having also served several years as president. —NAM

"Brother and Sister" Award Presentation of Lodge No. 47, Seaton The Lodge No. 47 Annual "Brother and Sister" award was given by lodge President Jerry Pechal to Brother Floyd and Sister Emily Stuteville at the lodge's Christmas party held Sunday, December 14, 1980. They have been active members such as regular in attendance at the lodge meetings and most of the dances sponsored by the lodge; Choral Club members; served on various committees, served as chairpersons of annual

picnic booth; both served on the Board of Trustees. Brother Floyd also served as chairman of the board for the year he served, and has helped in other capacities when asked or had volunteered. Sister Emily, also, is a busy sales representative; had served as District II director (titled in those days) for several years; and this year, she was a bar chairperson for a month. Bake in a good natured pan and serve repeatedly. *** With the new year well on its way, the officers in all our SPJST lodges have begun getting acquainted with their duties. In some instances, of course, the same officers remained at their posts, and will continue as before. Whatever the case may be, every member expects that each officer shall tackle the task before him or her with the utmost zeal, diligence, and thoroughness. Each lodge's membership expects each officer to perform their tasks honestly, properly, and as punctually as possible. Most officers have been made aware of their responsibilities but it will do no harm to remind them that the by-laws of the SPJST of our Society must be followed in all cases, even when in some instances, they are not exactly to suit our own needs.

In most lodges they have their own Rules and Regulations to follow for the whole year and if these regulations do not suit someone's personal liking, a member has the right to submit a recommendation to the lodge or their respective committee and the lodge body approves or disapproves your recommendation for the interest of your lodge at its annual meeting. Having rules and regulations on the lodge or district level is also good business which creates a concrete understanding that the officers and/or committees are carrying out their duties under the auspices of the SPJST Society.

While on the subject of the elected officers, you are reminded of the Supreme Lodge Officers' Workshops held in March and April at Hallettsville, Taylor and Ennis lodges. Attempt to be present at one of these workshops because this will be only to your advantage as an officer to become more familiar with your assignment that you have accepted in your lodge's annual meeting. ***

As I focus my thoughts on numerous things from day to day this topic sometimes crosses my thoughts: not how cheap, but how well.

In these days of keen competition, there seems to be a great tendency to try to meet this rivalry by

cheaper prices. This, on the face of the matters in hand, seems to be the logical thing to do. Upon a deeper study of the necessity of progress of civilization of our country, however, one finds that the better and more important trait of character, in the upbuilding of this country as a whole, lies not in the question of how cheap, but rather how well an act, how honorable a deed is done, how good a machine can be built.

The good deed that we do, lives long after we have passed into the great beyond, just as the good Washington, Lincoln, or Wilson and others have done, lives on and will live on for centuries to come.

A machine, whether intricate, or as simple as a hatchet, a gadget, or any other type of a tool, if made only to sell, as the term is often used, when actually put to some severe test, will buckle, crumble, break, crack or wear out, unless it is wellmade. It again depends on the how well, not how cheap it is made.

Great honor lies in a task well done, where one can turn to and point out with pride that it is a masterpiece, and not have to apologize and say that I have done only what I was paid for, and no more.

Our SPJST takes great pride in being able to point to its past accomplishments. It has been instrumental in the upbuilding of good morals and strong character of its boys and girls. These boys and girls who have grown up in our institution have made good honorable United States citizens.

The operation of these youth activities naturally costs great sums of money. The officials and youth leaders do not ask how cheap can we get this done, but how well can it be done. We do not ask our members and friends how cheap can we get along, but rather HOW WELL CAN WE ACCOMPLISH OUR TASKS! *** Faith is a little word and has come into prominence of late. It is being seen in various newspapers, magazines, posters and leaflets, heard on TV, radio and in speeches. We who belong to the SPJST have faith in our Society, and its future, so we find this little word playing a significant role in our life. In fact our whole world revolves around it. For this word — faith, in things and people produces or involves effort which determines progress. A lack of it causes a standstill and deterioration. We could and do consider it, therefore, a truly important word which should enter into every SPJST member's life. ***

We are beginning to publish the XXIII Convention Proceedings in this issue and will continue as space permits.

We have saved copies of our Vestnik of past issues in single weekly copies dating to 1975 or earlier and have them available for our members and readers if you desire them, because we did not want to destroy them. January Meeting of Lodge No. 142, Houston President Mary Ann Kieschnick called our regular monthly meeting to order at 8:02 p.m. at the lodge hall, Friday, January 9, 1981.

The meeting was convened with 29 members and one guest, Brother Louis Hanus, District V director, present. All recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers and minutes from the previous meeting were read by Secretary Alice Jochen. All officers' reports were also given.

Sister Henrietta Veselka, our youth leader, gave a very nice report on the functions and accomplishments of our youth under her direction, along with the help of her very capable Assistant Youth Leader Eugene Veselka for the year 1980. Many thanks to Sister Hen rietta and Brother Gene; you have certainly contributed much of yourselves to our youth members. Both of you deserve much praise!

Brother Louis Hanus, our District V director, spoke and he also recognized the youth members and leaders from Lodge No. 142 and Lodge No. 88 for their fine work during 1980. He also congratulated our new President Mary Ann Kieschnick for doing a good job.

Capsule drawing for $50 should have gone to Pamela (Melnar) Petrucha; sorry she was absent, and the prize went unclaimed. The $50 prize is again up for the February meeting, who will the winner be?

Door prizes went to: Rosie Tumis, Viola Kiphen, Nita Davis and Velma Alexander.

Sick members are: Nancy Cook, Dennis Hermis and Steve Lorive.

We hope all of you are feeling better today.

New members for December are Linda K. Triske and Kay Frances Wilson signed up by Sales Representative Sidon Timis.

The meeting adjourned at 9 p.m.

Wedding anniversaries: Harry and Lillian Finn celebrated their 50th anniversary in a big way Sunday, January 18th at our lodge; Joe and Minnie Bravenec are happy with their 56th wedding anniversary. Many, many, more to both lovely couples. Lillian is our parliamentarian, and Minnie and Joe took care of our lodge for many years before retiring.

We had two visitors, Mrs. Mary Supel of Chicago, Illinois, the sister of our departed Brother John Zemko and of course, our faithful visitor, Sister Albina Hilsher, and Rene Ordener.

A long list of birthday celebrants was read and a "Happy Birthday" song rang out from the assembly.

President Mildred Holeman was under a strain; she unfortunately met with a serious car accident last week. Someone ran a red light and hit her broadside and damaged her

car pretty badly, but Mildred was fortunate to come out of this mishap without bodily injuries. Of course, bruises and blue and black spots over her body are painful, and let's hope nothing serious will develop and besides she is fighting the flu bug. She is a trooper and we wish her well. This meeting was the beginning of the second term for Mildred and it brought my thoughts back to our annual meeting when officers and committees were giving their annual reports and President Mildred Holeman presented hers last. I have assisted Adolf Motal with five funerals of members, but Joseph Naval other than that, I believe statistics Louis Pecena to be of little interest to you for, in Jerry Pierce my opinion, if one is unwilling to Leroy Repka give of their time, energy and Frank Sablatura money, they should not accept the Pete Sablatura Vlasta Sabrsula presidency of Lodge 88.

Borrowing a cliche from the late Martha Sembera President Kennedy, "Ask not what Alice Svoboda the lodge can do for you, but what Justus Urbish you can do for the lodge," - I have Alfons Vana tried to make all my decisions on Frankie Vanek Matt Vanek that premise.

Our big functions have been very Rita Vanek successful with all the hard workers Gladys Veit turning out for Clean-up Day, and Eddie Vrana with the assistance and input of the Jerome Vanek membership, we have some TOTALS innovative ideas this year One was to cook for the Homecoming dinner rather than having it catered. Aside from the money factor, we wanted to Pauline Bayer instill into the members the need for Viola Cabla working for the lodge because you Jerry Elzner love it; nobody was paid for this Gordon Hrabal work and tho' tiresome, it was a type Roy Hranicky of camaraderie so desperately Thelma Hrncir needed here. It was a time of getting Alfred Kalmus better acquainted with each other; it Louis Krupala was a time of sharing and serving Charlie Matcek together. With sweat on our brows, Emil Matula and a lilt in our hearts, we netted .a Viola Mazac small profit as opposed to a several Lydia Myska hundred dollar loss the previous Helen Pavelka year. My thanks go to the members Maxine Pavliska who helped to initiate and execute L. F. Pustejovsky Frank C. Sacky such a vast undertaking.

Splash Day without a splash was a Henry Sralla good day. The splash has now been John Stasa taken care of and we look forward to Clifton Trlica a happy and eventful summer in Tillie Vaichar 1981, after an approximate $22,000 Frank Veselka repair bill on the pool. Our loss of TOTALS the use of the pool this past summer will increase the enthusiasm of our GRAND TOTALS youngsters next year.

Czech Day was an overwhelming success - plenty of food, fellowship and fraternalism abounding. For the first time in 25 years, Sokol of Houston participated in the program and their athletes did a superb performance. Through the courtesy of Liberty Savings Association and the lodge, a program by our own Czech Orchestra and Choral Club was broadcast live over KFRD Rosenberg. What a beautiful way to advertise our lodge and these two

groups. We have so much talent in our own back door; we choose not to pay for entertainment, but utilize our own. I believe we made a wise choice. No free lunches were served and the expense incurred in giving the gold Cross pens to 75 honored members was more than was spent the previous year because there were 55 more honorees. Nonetheless, these members were welldeserving of the honor bestowed upon them, and in making the presentations, one could only look back and see all the sacrifices they made years ago. Many of the things we enjoy today are a direct result of the labors of love performed by these outstanding members.

Now for the additions: The beautiful trophy case was filled by Rosalee Kostom with her own dolls; we have a cash register in the bar; we have initiated a budget for the lodge activities which serves as a guideline to see where we are going and where we have been. Sister Schenburn taught ceramics to some 37 children during the summer, and in line with a vote of the membership several years ago, we have an active building committee studying the feasibility of making additions to the building.

All in all, it has been a very fruitful year — I have made some mistakes, but none of us are perfect.

The only perfect person was crucified upon the Cross some 2,000 years ago. I have pleased some of you — some I have not, but I have tried very hard to serve all of you — even under some very adverse circumstances. I will accept the nomination for the presidency again this year, and I am sorry I have been unable to call each of you and solicit your support. I have a job which allows me to touch some of your lives in a special and meaningful way outside of the scope of business of this lodge. For that reason, I have not made a telephone campaign for my re-election, but I now ask your vote. We have undertaken some good programs, and I would like to finish some of the work which has been started. But, regardless of the outcome of this election, I will not leave this building with any ani mosity for there is no better exercise for strengthening the heart than reaching down and lifting people up. I will accept your decision with love and thanksgiving for having the opportunity of serving you as your president, however, I will urge my successors in office to continue some of the projects begun this year; those are the budget, the cooperation with our sister Czech organizations, the building com mittee, the children's ceramic classes, the project where the ladies do volunteer work in the hospitals, and the return of the members working and sharing together without pay. The spirit of community is our best defense against Communism, and at the close of this day, let's move forward in harmony, in the spirit of community and in fraternalism. All three of these can play a dynamic role in our community and in our personal lives.

A Report From Lodge No. 9, Snook

News from Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth

Our lodge held its M monthly meeting Wednesday, January 7, 1981 at 7:30 p.m. President Richard Vajdak called our meeting to order.

Sandra , choeneman led our Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Lyndon Jakubik read minutes of December meeting. They were approved as read. A roll call of officers showed all present.

Youth Club Leader, Betty Schoenemann gave her report stating that the group would be attending ball games, some participating in food show and had decided to join the 4-H Club in a skating party February 4, 1981.

Ruth Kovar gave her report of the Property Committee.

New member welcomed to our lodge is Randy Walker.

There was no old business. Under new business, it was decided to have a chicken-dumpling and chicken salad sandwich supper followed by social games March 28, 1981 at the hall.

Our next meeting is set for Wednesday, February 4, 1981, at 7:15 p.m. Please try to come!

Dear Members and Friends: The old year went out and the new year came in with a capacity crowd full of happiness at our New Year's Eve Dance.

We extend a special thank you to all who came in New Year's Day for the big cleanup.

Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our vice president, Brother Don Steinman, in the absence of our president. All the other officers were present.

All the reports were approved as read.

Our youth leader, Sister Carolyn Clevland announced the youth club will have a bowling and pizza party after their next meeting.

Sister Rose Steinman was our adult door prize recipient and Talon Milan was the youth club member prize winner.

We were sorry to hear Brother Carl Zich of Lodge No 92 having such a long hospital stay; do hope he is improving and also a speedy recovery to Sister Helen Kubala also of Lodge No 92 who had surgery. We have had quite a few members with the flu and virus and, to you all, get well soon!

Our meeting adjourned to refreshments and a-social.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 8, at 3 p.m.

Jerry Max Lane had some competition with Kenny Rogers, Saturday night, but we still had a nice turnout.

He will be back Saturday, February 7th.

End of Year Activities at Pasadena Lodge No. 172 Dear Members and Friends: The year 1980 has passed and we hope all of you had a blessed year.

We had a large attendance at the Christmas and New Year's Eve dances and we want to thank everyone who participated. A special thanks go to Brother and Sister Green and Brother and Sister Risinger; the lodge looked beautiful and I would like to also thank everyone for helping out in our kitchen at our New Year's Eve Dance. Those attending the dance ate black-eyed peas, corn bread and sausage.

In addition, I would like to thank those who helped at the Faith Memorial Nursing Home during the following dates: October 31, December 12 and December 13, 1980; the residents really enjoyed everything. Thanks are extended to Joyce Kimmons, Evelyn Kimmons, Tinnie Coffman, Lillia Mae Peter, our Lodge No. 172 President Victor Peter and Esther Mikeska, my mother, who worked at the rest home October 31st.

Our thanks to Esther Mikeska, James and Joyce Kimmons, Victor and Lillia Mae Peter, Albert and Tarnmie Risinger, and Manice and Mary Green, who worked on the date of December 12th. (The Risin gers and Greens had worked all afternoon at the lodge hall.)

A special thanks to Joyce Kiminons for helping out on the CYC trip; the residents from the Faith Memorial Nursing Home really enjoyed the day's outing and music, etc.

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Report Dear Members and Friends, First of all, I would like to wish all of you a belated Happy New Year.

I would like to thank Sister Helen Paprskar for the great job she did as reporter, and I hope I can do at least half as good. If you have any information for me to put in the Vestnik, please call me at 237-4320.

Despite the cowboy football game we had a large attendance at our January meeting.

President Albert Kubala then took over the meeting and all official business was conducted.

Sister Durham reported she sent cards to Brother Carl Zich who is still in All Saints Hospital, Brother Sid Pokladnik who is recuperating from a gall bladder attack, Sister Helen Kubala who is in All Saints Hospital following surgery, Sister Evelyn Zacek is in All Saints Hospital with foot problems and Sister Albina Farek is in Northwest Hospital and will have foot surgery next week. Sister Mary Hubenak is at home following surgery and Sister Bennie Bartek is at home with the flu. We hope everyone will get well quick and hope to see all of you at our next meeting.

Congratulations to Brother and Sister Farmer Laymance who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 8th. They were honored by their children with an open house at their residence on January 10th. We wish them many more years together.

Sister Durham also thanked everyone who brought cookies and helped serve at the Christmas party.

Brother Gordon and Sister Cheryl Hubenak did an excellent job with the youth at the Christmas program and everyone who attended had a good time visiting and waiting for Santa to arrive and hand out the bags of goodies.

Sister Esta Belle Hubenak gave the youth club report since the youth were bowling. She also thanked everyone who helped at the Christmas party. The youth club will sponsor a dance on April 3rd with music by the Matt Sladky orchestra from Waverly, Nebraska. Admission will be $8 a couple in advance and $10 a couple at the door. There will be more details about the dance later.

The following donations were received: Robert Blake a gift of $5 and the Ladies' Circle donated $100 toward the crystal ball. The family of Helen Zich donated $15 to the building fund.

Needville Lodge No. 81 Reports On Monthly Meeting Our regular monthly lodge meeting was held at 2 p.m. January 11th which was called to order by President Charlie Ivlatcek.

The Pledge of Allegiance to our flag was led by Sister Mary Matcek.

All officers answered the roll call.

Sister Aleene Zwahr read the minutes for our Secretary Mary Werner, who was not feeling well enough to read them. The minutes were approved as read.

Financial Secretary Aleene Zwahr gave her report and Willie Mae Kuykendal, our treasurer, gave her report.

The Special Fund report was given by Treasurer Gilbert Walzel.

All these reports were accepted as given.

After a short meeting, the En tertainment Committee reported that we should have our annual chili supper February 10th, serving beginning at 5 p.m. Ladies don't forget, it will be up to us to bring our favorite pastry to go with the supper. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy good food and good fellowship.

March 8th, we will also host the District V meeting but you will be hearing more about this event later, so don't forget to read your Vestnik.

We were glad to have Brother Luedke and his bride of a few weeks with us. Congratulations and do come back to our meetings. We were also glad to hear that Sister Vlasta Holt is out of the hospital. We do wish you a speedy recovery.

Thanks to Sister Benita Walzel for taking time out to purchase two electric knives for our kitchen.

Refund checks were handed out.

Sister Vlasta Hurta was the recipient of the attendance prize.

January 4th Meeting of Lodge No. 107, Floresville

Lodge No 107 met for its first meeting of the new year held 4 January 1981, at 2 p.m.

President Bayer called the meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

All officers except Treasurer Sralla and Phyllis Purchis, financial secretary, were present.

Sick members reported were Mary Zidek and Joseph Bayer who was to enter the hospital in the near future. Christene Hrna and Henry Sralla are recuperating after short stays in the hospital.

The secretary read the minutes and also gave the treasurer's report.

She also collected dues with the assistance of Liz Bielefeld. Financial Secretary Phyllis Purchis had not

returned from a trip to Michigan to visit her parents. She reported that snow and cold weather were in abundance while she and her husband Rex and son Marty were visiting in the cold country. Rex's parents are planning to spend the winter in Floresville.

New members accepted, on a motion by the Screening Committee, were Dawn Denise Baumann and Gerald Meyer.

Youth leader Polly Bayer stated the December Christmas party and hayride were fun but very cold.

A TV and some other prizes are being given away to help the youth club on a money-making project. The tickets will be ready for the District VII spring meeting. The prizes will be awarded at the 1981 Peanut Festival.

President Bayer gave a financial report and a donation was given to the youth club in appreciation for all the help at the peanut booth.

A thank you note was read from the Volunteer Fire Department.

The City Council invited representatives to attend a park planning meeting. The City of Floresville is in the process of building a city park and ideas and recommendations from the public, especially those dealing with youngsters are being sought.

Barbara Burleson was awarded the door prize.

Next meeting will be held 1st February 1981, at 4 p.m.

After collection of dues the meeting was adjourned.

Warrenton Lodge No. 179 Meeting Held January 8th Dear Members and Friends: Our lodge held its regular monthly meeting Thursday night, January 8th in Warrenton Store Guest Room with a nice attendance.

We are sorry to hear that Sister Paula Georges is on the sick list. We wish her and any others who are ill a speedy recovery.

President Harold Bergmann called the meeting to order and led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

All officers were present.

Secretary Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting, and Brother Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report; both readings were accepted as given.

Sister Dorothy Oltmann gave the financial standing. She also read the correspondence and stated our lodge has received the annual refund premium checks from the Supreme Lodge. She also read the names of the withdrawals and addition. Withdrawal names are: Dennis Roemer, Chad Roemer and Denton Murphy; and Michael Wayne Meinen as a new member. We warmly welcome him into our midst.

Music for our annual celebration was briefly discussed.

President Bergmann reminded members that three dollars local lodge dues are due in January.

The Auditing Committee is to audit the books for our regular meeting in February.

The Food Committee reported that the lodge will furnish sausage for our next meeting.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Afterwards everyone enjoyed turkey and ham sandwiches, cakes, pies, cookies, chips, pickles and refreshments.

In the meantime Brother Aubrey Hackemack entertained the group on his accordion; thanks to Brother Hackemack for the entertainment.

Our next regular meeting will be Thursday night, February 12, at 7:30 p.m. and youth club meeting will be at 7 p.m.

YOUTH SECTION From the Youth Leaders ROBSTOWN LODGE NO. 117 YOUTH LEADER REFLECTS ON 1980 Dear Readers: After fifteen years of serving as youth leader for Lodge No. 117, I feel it is in the best interest of District VII as well as my own youth club that I step down from my position. This will cause some mental ad justment for me because for all these years, my work with the club has filled my spare hours and energy, but change is part of living, and I know the club will benefit from having a new person with new ideas as its leader. I wish to thank my assistants who have given so much of their time and energy to make our club's program a success. Mrs. Betty Jurica has worked tirelessly for the past four years, doing any and every job I have given her Mr. Kenneth Foerster has provided the masculine influence the members have needed, serving as a sponsor at camp, driving our bus when a substitute was needed, and providing leadership; and, of course, a special thanks to my husband, Eugene, who has been by my side all these fifteen years. He was instrumental in our buying our own bus about 11 years ago and has kept it running and driving it as needed for our activities.

I would like to also thank those who have served as president over the years. May I mention only a few: Michael Pavelka, Dena Rychetsky, Carol Cates, Pam Steiger, as well as my own three children, David, Connie and Brent. I would guess that at least 250 youth members have been involved in the club over these past years. Many are still members of the SPJST. I also wish to express my kappreciation to Maxine Pavliska, District VII youth counselor, who has put up with many instances of poor

judgment on my part, and lack of knowledge; also James Janousek and Dorothy Massey who helped me grow as a youth leader. It doesn't take much remembering for us to realize there is no such thing as a self-made person.

At our annual meeting held in December, new officers for Lodge No. 117 were, elected; these were installed at a Christmas banquet held at Nolan's Steakhouse, December 14th. They are: President Kenneth Foerster, Vice President Frances McDonald, Secretary and Treasurer Helen Pavelka, and Youth Leader Eugene Hrncir. Eugene will name his assistants as needed.

The banquet was a gala affair, attended by 30-35 members. Guest speaker was Rev. George Alexander who spoke on the similarities between the SPJST and the mission of the church. Christmas carols were sung by the group, accompanied by two guitarists, Kenneth Foerster and Rev. Alexander.

The youth club ended its activities for the year with a Christmas meeting, caroling, and party. Gay gifts were exchanged and delicious bags of fruit, candy, and nuts, provided by the adult lodge, were distributed. Donna Benick, social chairman, was in charge of the party. Refreshments of a large variety were available. Some of the members walked throughout the neighborhood singing carols while others stayed at the Scout Hut enjoying various games.

The next morning the Hrncirs flew to Los Angeles to spend the holidays there with our children. We drove to Lake Tahoe where the four children enjoyed 3 days of skiing at Squaw Valley. We enjoyed the 72mile drive around the beautiful lake which has the bluest water imaginable. Snow was sparse but, at 8,000 feet and higher, skiing was nice. We then spent 3 days visiting in Vacaville, which is about 20 miles west of Sacramento. Our son, David, is doing his residency in Pediatrics at Travis Air Force Base. He took us to Point Reyes to view the migrating gray whales, but dense fog prevented our seeing this unusual sight.

Then we drove back to Los Angeles where we spent 5 days visiting our daughter, Connie, who is a tour guide at Universal Studios and is doing bit parts in several movies and TV shows. We made her tour and got VIP treatment. We also attended the Johnny Carson Show at the NBC Studio, saw a special screening of "Flash Gordon" given for the Universal tour guides, and had reserved seats to view the beautiful Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena. We drove down crowded Hollywood and Vine Street on New Year's Eve and attended a New Year's Eve service at Hollywood Presbyterian Church. The only flaw in the lovely two weeks was that I developed a very bad cold and cough which still hangs on as I write this.

May I conclude with my thanks to the SPJST for providing me with the opportunity to be the leader of a youth club and providing all the benefits which go with the position; to the members of District VII for naming me as its new director; and to the members of Lodge No. 117 for the love and support they have given me over the years.

WARRENTON YOUTH REPORT ON THEIR ACTIVITIES Dear Readers, The Warrenton Youth Club of Lodge No. 179 held their regular monthly business meeting January 8, 1981.

Our new president, Sue Lynn Schoenst, presided. Rhonda Oltmann led the Pledge of Allegiance. Russell Klump read the minutes in the absence of the secretary.

We made plans to visit the nursing home in La Grange, Sunday, February 8; we will also take them some candy and Valentines for Valentine's Day. We will meet at Warrenton at 1:30 p.m. Plans are also to take in some other activity the same evening with supper at the Dairy Queen.

I hope to see all members present for this busy Sunday.

BEYERSVILLE YOUTH MET AT LODGE NO. 48 Dear Members and Friends, Our meeting was held Sunday, January 4th, at 4 p.m. We had a good attendance.

There was no old business.

The new business consisted of that we are going to have a skating party in Taylor at the new skating rink called "Family Skating Center."

There is no definite date set yet. We are very glad that there is a skating rink near us.

The next meeting will be Sunday, February 1st, at 3:30 p.m. Everyone should be thinking of a good Valentine's party.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 16, Bila Hora, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother LEONARD JULIUS WOYTEK, who was killed in a traffic accident near Rockdale, Monday, November 10, 1980, at the age of 46 years.

Funeral services were held from the Colonial Funeral Home in Victoria, Thursday, November 13. The body was taken to Yoakum to the Sacred Heart Mausoleum in Yoakum; the Rev. Richard officiated.

Brother Woytek was born in Hallettsville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard O. Woytek, August 3, 1934.

He was a member of Our Lady

Catholic Church in Victoria. For the past 15 years he was a resident of Victoria.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Wanda (Brom) Woytek; a daughter, Mrs. Joe Boap of Victoria; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Woytek; sister, Mrs. Marlyn Strauss; one brother, Dennis Woytek of League City; and one grandchild.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of F. B. Zdrubek Lodge No 112, of Guy, Texas, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister FRANCES THERESA BATKE, 93, of Guy, Texas, who passed away Sunday, December 21, 1980, at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville.

Sister Batke came to America from Czechoslovakia as a small child.

In later years, she was married to Gotlieb Batke who preceded her in death in 1966.

Rosary was recited Monday night, December 22, at 7:30 p.m., at the Garrnany-Carden Chapel in Needville. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Damon, followed by interment in the church cemetery. Monsignor Gilbert Pekar officiated.

Survivors are: two daughters, Mrs. Helen Teykl and Mrs. Della Eloff, both of Needville; one son, Len W. Batke of West Columbia; one sister, Mrs. Mary Listak of Damon; and several nieces and nephews, grandchildren and many friends.

Pallbearers were: Ed Kovar, Ed Walcik, Raymond Stupka, Joe Buchta, Frank Maroul and Henry Pavlicek.

Garmany-Carden Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee, in behalf of our membership of Lodge No. 20, Komensky, Granger, Texas, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge`brother JOHN PAUL SKURKA, 85, of 505 E. Avenue G., Robstown, Texas, who passed away, Sunday, December 7, 1980, in the Riverside Hospital, after a long illness. For the past year and half he resided with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Gajdos.

Brother Slturka was born in Corn Hill, Texas, October 24, 1895 to Johanna (Klepac) and Paul Skurka.

He grew up in that vicinity and married Millie Roznaovak 18 June 1918;a month later he enlisted in the Army and was assigned to Co. 302 Wagon Co. Q.M.C. and later was sent to France. He was discharged 26 July 1919: He was engaged

around the Jarrell area until his illness and retired in 1936.

He moved with his family to Robstown, Texas, November 1946, where he lived until his death.

His wife preceded him in death 26 July 1953; also a son, Staff Sgt. Johnnie, who was listed missing over the South China Sea, 11 February 1945.

Survivors include his two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Elizabeth) Gajdos of Robstown and Mrs. Bruce (Mary Ann) Griffith of Harlingen; two sisters, Mrs. Sophie Malik of Robstown and Mrs. Agnes Mekush of Corpus Christi; one granddaughter, Mrs. Jeanette Lewis of Okotoks Alberta, Canada; two grandsons, Kenneth Gajdos of Robstown, and Scott Sarno of Harlingen; and two great-grandsons, Ryan and Kevin Lewis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Rubac; and one son, Edward.

Items of Interest The State of Texas House of Representatives Austin, Texas Kubiak's Report The beginning of the 67th Legislative session on the 13th of January focuses a lot of attention on high profile public issues that are going to get legislative action this year, like continuing the battle for property tax reform.

But while those highly visible issues get most of the attention through the media, there are some very important actions that will be taken and likely never will be known about.

One of these involves catfish farming.

If you are like most people I know, there is nothing better than a good, pan-fried catfish for dinner. And the best source of those good Texas catfish has been due to the people who develop and operate catfish farming operations.

In the last few years there has been a dramatic decline in the number of catfish farming operations in Texas, from about 500 producers five or six years ago, down to about 30 now in the whole state of Texas.

What has happened is this: The grocery stores and markets in Texas have been flooded with imported catfish of inferior quality, compared to Texas raised ones. These imported catfish have been brought up primarily from South America (the Amazon River region), but the quality and taste of these imported fish could not compare with a good, fat Texas catfish. Housewives and people buying this product realized this fact quickly. The result was that sales fell off so sharply and stayed down, having an adverse on the entire catfish market. t In my opinion the quickest way to remedy the problem is to have the foreign and out-of-state producers label their catfish so that consumers will know exactly where the catfish are coming from.

Monday morning, June 9, 1980 Immediately preceding the opening ceremonies of the convention, Memorial Services were held at the Alamo, dedicated to all deceased members of the SPJST who gave their lives for their country in all wars and conflicts. The ceremony included speeches by Emil Matula (133) and State Representative Ron Bird and the laying of a wreath at the Alamo by Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris, Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernard Gebala and Convention Planning Committee Chairman Emil Matula. A group picture of the delegates was taken after which the delegation proceeded to Banquet Hall No. 2 of the San Antonio Convention Center for the opening of the convention.

At 10 a.m., the Honor Guard placed the flags and Convention Planning Committee Co-Chairman Dominic Netek (133) lead the delegates in the Pledge of Allegiance. Emil Manila (133), Convention Planning Committee Chairman, gave the welcome address in English, followed by a welcome`in the Czech language given by Dominic Netek (133).

Vincent Hearsey of the San Antonio Hotel Association welcomed the delegates to San Antonio, followed by a welcome by San Antonio Mayor Pro-Tem Henry Cisneros.

Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris opened and convened the convention at 10:10 a.m. He introduced the four convention secretaries: Melvin Skrabanek Johnnie Krizan Irene Weidner Elaine Berkovsky President Nick A. Morris delivered a welcome address both in the Czech and English languages, both of which appear in the Appendix. President Morris stated that the day has arrived for the XXIIIrd SPJST Convention and that the Supreme Lodge officers have been working as a team for this day. In addition, President Morris mentioned that the host Lodge No 133 has worked hard with excellent help and devotion of its local lodge members under the direction of Emil Matula and Dominic Netek to bring forth a wonderful convention in San Antonio.

Furthermore, President Morris stated that the Supreme Lodge has made every effort to provide the delegates with accurate and up-to-date information. From this, President Morris only asked that the delegates be open-minded in their decisions. All committees have worked many hard hours of deliberation and will present concise reports.

President Morris then stated that the SPJST is made up of many facets and that all decisions should be weighed in the proper perspective.

He further stated that at this convention the Home Office is going on record that computerization must have top priority interest at this convention. In addition, President Morris stated that we are an insurance company and that insurance should always be first and foremost in our thinking and that everything else is secondary.

President Morris then went on to urge the delegates to be open-minded in their deliberations. In addition, he stated that the Supreme Lodge is always willing to provide help and advice to any questions that the members may have. However, the Supreme Lodge does not "sit as a judge", but as a mediator in solving lodge and membership grievances with the hope that the local lodge will settle its own differences.

In conclusion of his welcome address, President Morris then stated, "let us get to work on our convention business". First, President Morris urged the delegates to open their packets and pay particular attention to the white sheet showing the number of votes for all delegates to the XXIIIrd Convention.

Darlene Engelke wished everyone a good morning and stated that it was very nice to be here. Darlene Engelke stated that they have had good response from the delegates in determining the eligibility of their credentials.

To support this, she stated that the following three lodges had ineligible delegates: Lodge 25 - Johnie Hrabina, who attended only five meetings.
