The frontiers of the human mind are just beginning to open up. If we are to conquer them, we must seek out and encourage the "uncommon man" who is found, most usually, in the ranks of the so-called "common people."

They used to make fun of him. "Is that pest here again?" Nobody wanted to see the insurance man.

Few were even polite to him. Then nature went on a rampage. Hurricanes, floods, explosions and fires.

Suddenly folks found that insurance men were their best friends, that the policy really was as good as it had been represented.

Many people don't know it, but there are several ways a beneficiary may receive the proceeds of a life insurance policy.

When a life insurance policyholder dies, the entire amount of his policy becomes payable immediately to his beneficiary, unless the policyholder has specified otherwise.

His beneficiary is most often his wife, who will need money quickly for final expenses.

If the family's savings or other resources do not cover her immediate bills, she can turn to her husband's life insurance. But, if she doesn't need all the proceeds at once, there may be good reasons not to take the entire, amount in a single lump sum.

A beneficiary has several other choices under the "settlement options" of life insurance, which offer considerable flexibility in meeting a widow's money problems.

The family's life insurance agent can help her make the best choice.

Of course, even if she is experienced at handling money, it may be difficult for her to make vital financial decisions under the shock and grief of a recent death. And, particularly if she is a younger woman, she may not really be able to gauge her long-term financial needs.

So she can leave part or all of the money with the life company until she needs it or decides how to use it.

Meanwhile, the company will pay her interest on the fluids. She can normally withdraw any amount whenever she wishes, or change to a different option later on.

A policyholder can specify in advance exactly how his insurance is to be paid to his beneficiary and can make his decision binding. In some cases, this may be prudent. But, since financial needs change, estate planners usually advise that the policyholder give his beneficiary the right to change the method of settlement.

January 9, 1776, two hundred and five years ago, a pamphlet was published which helped shape American history. Its title was "Common Sense," and it was written by Thomas Paine, an Englishman who had been in this country less than two years. It analyzed clearly the situation and grievances of the American colonies and called for a declaration of independence. President's Annual New Year's Message and Report Dear Members: Now that the Christmas and New Year's Holidays are past, we certainly hope that all of you had a pleasant and enjoyable holiday season — and particularly, enjoyed the company of your family and loved ones, together with good health.

It has been traditional that the president bring you this report at this time each year, in addition to other reports that he renders periodically to the membership in the Vestnik.

Insurance And Membership Growth Please be reminded that in accordance with Vice President Gebala's new practice of reporting insurance sales now includes the amount of insurance actually issued or placed on the books. ($15,240,500 as of 20 Dec. '80). This gives a truer picture of the gains, rather than just giving the amount of applications received. What is received (applied for) and what is issued and placed on the books are two different things.

The members thus have a more accurate picture of what our gains in insurance actually are. (Net figures in insurance gains and reports will be reported to you in March of 1981.)

We cannot let this occasion pass without the mention of one individual who, as far as I am concerned, deserves the title of "Mr. Vestnik" —Jerome Kopecky, shop foreman of the Cechoslovak Publishing Company since 1932. Being the shy and unpretentious man that he is, he wouldn't approve of my writing these words, but he deserves them, nonetheless. That's 48 years of devoted, unselfish, and loyal service — not only to an employer but to a cause. He, too, is a professional.

After you work very closely with a person as I did for some six years, you get to know him pretty well — and above all, respect him. And patience with those much less knowl edgeable than he — goodness knows that the Biblical Job would have to admire Jerome, although for slightly different reasons. When the Good Lord created Jerome, he threw away the pattern. There are few left like him. The chapter in the forthcoming History of the SPJST pays proper tribute to Messrs. Holasek and Kopecky. Jerome, we will miss you. You're a good man ...

LAM Department. The move of the Library, Archives and Museum to the new quarters in the basement here in the Home Office is nearing completion. There is at least twice as much room in the basement as was devoted to this area on the top floor. The remodelling has resulted in a very tasteful arrangement. The displays are more open than they were previously. We will endeavor to have a formal opening of the area sometime in the spring and we invite all of you to come see this new area at that time. Of course, in the meantime, if you have a chance and are in Temple, please feel free to visit. The worth and value of an area such as this is in proportion to the exposure it receives from the viewing public. We owe much to Bro. Otto Hanus for his many years of work in that area. A little over two months ago, we hired a much-needed assistant to Bro. Otto in the person of Mrs. Thelma Bartosh, who is rapidly proving to be a very valuable addition to our staff here.

In the meantime, we have proceeded with the remodelling of the ground floor and the space vacated by the Library, Archives and Museum. The long-range uses of that area call for insurance and administrative spaces and office space for the editor and his assistant.

Invitations. We wish to gratefully acknowledge the invitations that all of us have received, especially during this holiday`season. We could not possibly make them all and we hope that you understand because so many lodges schedule their Christmas socials at the same time.

Nevertheless, they were all appre ciated and we were privileged and honored to fulfill requests to install officers at several lodges in recent weeks. Since we have been using the rotation system among the five officers in attending various functions, it has somewhat eased our travel requirements and enabled us to have a few more weekends with our families. It is also saving the Society money and there is not much point in several persons from the Home Office attending the same function.

1981 Calendars. The SPJST calendars for 1981 were received

and sent out during the third and fourth weeks of December — a little later than we had hoped, but there were some stock procurement problems that delayed their completion. We will continue distributing the calendars to those members receiving the Vestnik until the supply is depleted. If you didn't get one, please let us know. As always, those on the Vestnik mailing list receive these calendars.

Top Ten Lodges. I would like to give you the standings of the top ten lodges in our Society, along with some comments and observations.

These figures are as of 30 September 1980. Comparing this list with the same list a year ago, we see that there are no changes, as far as the ranking goes.

We see that five of the top ten lodges are still located in District III, four in District II, and one in District V. The two newcomers to this list, year before last have maintained their positions this year — Lodge 74 Lovelady and Lodge 25 Ennis. We salute the officers and members of these ranking lodges.

Acknowledgements. My gratitude is expressed to all my colleagues -officers and directors in the Supreme Lodge, for a job well done during the past year. They have served you well. Their January report will reflect that the Society is being well managed. A thorough and complete audit is conducted by the directors in the January and July meetings each year and reported to the membership in the Vestnik. The financial secretary, vice president, and secretary treasurer make monthly reports to the membership in the Vestnik. The proceedings of all Supreme Lodge meetings are published in the Vestnik. Your president has reported to you periodically as the need arose in our official organ.

My gratitude is likewise expressed to all the Home Office employees for their good work and loyalty to our Society. We now have two State Field Managers in the persons of Brother Silas Smith and Gene McBride. Both have made good impressions on those they have encountered. They are covering the State well and are both good instructors.

Our thanks are also expressed to our Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Jack Weinblatt, who has been most cooperative in fulfilling his obligations and responsibilities with the medical applications received in the Home Office.

We wish also to acknowledge the fine work and cooperation of our Actuary, Mr. David Huff in Austin for his work during the year in per forming various actuarial services and financial advice. As in any insurance corporation, the actuary in the SPJST plays a little-known but very important role.

To all lodge officers and workers who work so tirelessly at the many tasks at their lodges, my sincere thanks because without them, lodge

activities would come to a halt. Regrettably, it is often the 'same few who are making most of the sacrifices and the rest are enjoying the fruits of their efforts. These tasks should be shared by a greater portion of the membership; the load would thus be more evenly distributed and less of a burden. It behooves us all to at least check as to whether our services are needed by volunteering throughout the year rather than showing up once a year when everything is prepared and ready for you. And when you are asked to help in some way, do so, if at all possible. Operating a lodge, especially a large one, is a yeararound, 12-month business. Along with all the benefits and privileges there must also be responsibilities.

Fraternal Benefit Societies such as ours must operate on the lodge system. That is a legal requirement.

Please read the following on this very important, in fact crucial, part of our fraternal work.

Is Our Lodge System In Trouble?

The problem is nothing new. It has been with us for a long time, however, it is becoming more acute and approaching a very crucial period in our fraternal existence.

It has been something of a problem for a good many years, except for the very early years and beginnings of the SPJST when getting our members sufficiently, in terested to attend lodge meetings and participate and being active in the lodge was not much of a problem. In the first half of this century attending lodge meetings was one of the main social events in many of our communities and people looked forward to visiting and talking with neighbors whom they probably hadn't seen for weeks, perhaps months. It was one of the main social activities. There was no lack of attendance in many of our lodges.

Lifestyles have changed and it is no longer in vogue to go and visit with people that you;have an opportunity to communicate with on an almost daily basis. There is much more at stake, however.

Based on what has transpired in a number of lodges in recent months, the situation is becoming quite serious. The problem has been and is twofold: first, there seems to be increasing difficulty in getting members to serve as officers (and in other positions) in the local lodge, and second, there is an acute short age of people willing to put in time and work around the lodge premises and in lodge projects. Make no mistake about it, if we abandon or abdicate or somehow allow the lodge system to fall into disarray, we are in trouble because one of the main requirements of a fraternal benefit Society is that it operate on the lodge system.

From where I sit there are several lodges in difficulty due to one or both of the two reasons above. I think the situation is due to a number of reasons and probably a combination of these reasons. One is the pre-occupation of members with other activities, most of which are probably related to the family income. The national economic picture is not all that bright and it has become necessary, in many instances, to have two breadwinners in a family in order to make ends meet. This naturally has its repercussions, one of which relegates lodge activities to a very low priority. Another is that since there

is not time for mom and dad to participate, chances are that their children cannot participate in some way. In short, the economic pressures are a big factor in minimizing the participation in the local lodge.

In short, "I don't have the time."

I also am aware of those lodges where a majority of the members are advanced in age and hold paid-up policies. Their energies are just about exhausted and there is no new blood coming into the lodge. Such lodges located in sparsely populated areas have little prospect for membership growth and their only alternative is to merge with a neighboring lodge or disband and the members transfer to the lodge of their choice. Such a situation is really no one's fault; it is an inevitable and natural consequence of time taking its toll and/or the urbanization of rural Texas. These lodges did the best they could for as long as they could.

Brothers and sisters, we must reorient some of our thinking and philosophy in this last quarter of the 20th Century. Do we value our fraternal benefit Societies enough to work at insuring their survival? Are we willing to work to preserve the lodge system? Are individuals and factions more important than the organization? Or are we going to take for granted that which has been passed on to us by our forefathers?

Are we willing to take up our places at the guard posts and ramparts of something that we think enough of to make the appropriate sacrifices?

To those who have "stuck it out" and remained "in the harness", you are to be commended.

As fraternalists, we must make up our minds that WE are primarily responsible for perpetuating what we have; others won't do it for us.

All is not lost. There is still time. . .We will address this matter a little further in our spring workshops.

What Lies Ahead? In looking at my last year's report at about this time, I predicted that within a year gasoline would be costing us a dollar a gallon. It is considerably above that now, and as I said earlier in this report there is strong indication that it will go up a few more cents early this year, perhaps even by the time you read this report. We are still witnessing double digit inflation and erosion of our earning power.

Recently, it was announced that the prime lending rate was boosted to 21.5% — an alltime high! There are no fewer problems domestically or internationally — in fact, we seem to have gained a couple of trouble spots this last year. A new administration will take over in January and it would probably be premature to predict what changes might be forthcoming, But I expect that there will be some. Let's hope that they are for the better, mainly in the economic field. International instability is of concern to us, but what we have here at home is what is closer to us and what affects us more directly. We hope for the best.

May you especially be blessed with an abundance of good health, for that is the most important ingredient of our lives. And may the souls of the faithful

Larry is and has been a staunch friend and supporter of the SPJST during his years in this area. He was editor of the Temple Daily Telegram when the new Home Office building was being planned. From our scrapbook files we came across an editorial Larry wrote for his paper and which appeared in the issue of 18 April 1969. It appears here verbatim.

new SPJST building on North Main Street will contain an archives library and museum designed to preserve the heritage of Czech descendants in Texas. For Czech heritage is a part of Texas heritage and no more fitting place could be found for the preservation of such a culture.

As any student of Texas history knows, this state was made by people of several cultures. Far from the least among them were the Czech people who came to America in the last half of the 1800's and on into this century. Thousands debarked at Galveston and pushed on into the Texas interior, following the Blacklands belt as they brought their love of land and exceptional ability at farming to what was then raw land.

In time Temple became a center of Czech descendants and no area, no county could boast better citizens.

Czech immigrants brought, and their descendants maintain, a love of freedom, strong family unity and concern for an orderly society. Such attributes have always been and remain the keystones of a free society. The Czech people learned their lessons the hard way. For hundreds of years they stood at the crossroads of Europe, caught in the ebb and flow as medieval tribes fought back and forth. Even in modern times what is today Czechoslovakia has been mangled by the power plays of major European nations. Yet, it is in Czechoslovakia that the fires of freedom still burn brightest behind the Iron Curtain.

The SPJST's action in setting aside space for preservation of such a heritage is in the highest spirit of public service. It could go far in making Temple a principal center of Czech culture in Texas. And considering what the Czech people have contributed to this area, nothing could be more fitting.

Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Christmas has passed and we hope you all had a blessed one.

We had a large attendance at:the Christmas program, and want to thank everyone who participated. A special thanks to Sister Tina Cox for presenting the "Puppet Pros of Fort Worth" who had a beautiful Christmas Puppet Show. The children were so engrossed, that you could hear a pin drop. Christmas carols were sung and then here comes Santa Claus, and that is always the highlight of the program. Santa passed out all the gifts and then the bags with fruit, candy and other goodies, with a coupon for free food and drinks at various places, which were obtained by Sister Tina Cox. Bobby Joe Clevland was our MC. We thank you all and especially to Santa and the sisters for the goodies for the social.

We were sorry to hear the bad news of Sister Janee and Jim Wright of Phoenix, Arizona having a fire in their apartment on Christmas Day and had extensive damage. They were not home at that time.

We were sorry to hear that Rome Milan injured his knee and had to have surgery December 30th. We wish him a speedy recovery.

We are happy to learn that Sid Pokladnik and Richard Hubenak are both home from the hospital and hope that they are a lot better and that they continue to improve.

I have learned that we have more travelers; Mary, Phyllis and Hermina Cihaeek are visiting the New England states.

The officers elected were the same as last year, namely: Julia Dueser, president; Bessie Prochaska, vice president; Clara Marchioni, secretary; and Aurora Maldino, treasurer. I am not sure who the reporter will be. Florence Greer had been suggested but as she was not at the meeting; I do not know if she will accept the appointment.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Marie Tesar and Elizabeth Gregory.

We are very sorry to hear about the passing away of Sister Helen Zich and we wish to express our most sincere sympathy to her family. Their mother was loved by everyone who knew her. May she rest in heavenly peace with our Lord in Heaven.

The next meeting will be January 8th, 1981, if the weather permits, with everyone bringing a covered dish. If the weather is bad, then it will be in February and everyone is asked to bring a covered dish.

President Julia Dueser read about the Christmas customs in Czechoslovakia to close the meeting.

Everyone enjoyed the Christmas dinner and afterwards gifts were exchanged and everyone had a very pleasant time.

Study of Conversational Czech at Alvin Community College The fall semester ended December 16, 1980 with a social at the home of George and Delores "Tac guard in Alvin.

During the semester the class took part in the Halloween celebration or carnival held annually at ACC. The class did this to raise money for a scholarship for a selected student of Czech origin. The booth sold kolache, strudel and coffee. Later, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the class raised additional funds by selling various candies.

Some of the students from the class went to see the stage play, "Neni panstvo jako panstvo" at Lodge No. 88. There, a very good performance was given by a former Alvin Conversational Czech teacher, Wm. Souchek.

Now the class wants to thank the Supreme Lodge SPJST for their contribution of $300 to Alvin Community College toward helping the continuing of Conversational Czech in our community. We are all looking forward to the beginning of the spring semester.

Last Drops of News From Lodge No. 88, Houston Three days before Christmas and the Holiday Season is in a whirlwind of all kinds of private parties and lodge activities! December is busy as a beehive and every Saturday in December had a regular scheduled dance, with two being battle dances, two orchestras playing music until 2 a.m. and two Fridays with countrywestern music. Besides that, all five Thursdays were busy with the social night activities; the Birthday Club Sisters take two Wednesdays out of every month of the year, and the youth club Christmas party and, in between, the lodge home is in demand for outside activities. The loyal committees don't have much of a breathing spell, but produce an excellent job.

A Christmas party was held in the lovely home of Harry and Mickey Rice with sixty guests present.

Mickey, dressed in a long red skirt topped with a beautiful white blouse, looked radiant greeting the guests with Harry; both are born congenial hosts, and everyone felt at ease in their lovely and beautiful home. Everywhere you laid your eyes you could see the most lovely handwork done by Mickey. The large Christmas tree was like a beacon with numerous lights and playing Christmas carols. Most of the tree decorations were handmade, the pictures on all the walls were beautifully done in needlepoint. As one enters, a large handmade rug is stepped on by anyone entering in the front door and another one in the guest bedroom catches your eye. Everywhere in the home, where your eyes roam, you see this miraculous work by Mickey. When does she do it? God only knows, because she must have spent endless hours in creating such work. The China cabinet holds numerous pieces of art accumulated from their travels; and speaking of something breath taking, it is the garden room with hundreds of exotic plants surrounding the manmade waterfall constructed by Harry, and a lush green carpet covering the room. To nurse all these plants must take magic hands.

Speaking of having a good time, the food was a delicacy served in the dining room, buffet-style; dessert was served in the adjoining room with coffee. Two of Mickey's sisters, were present and daughter, Connie.

Of course, they missed their other daughter, Joan and son-in-law, Lt Colonel Allen Dodson now is Oslo, Norway with NATO, in the US Air Force. Harry and Mickey, your party was super!

Another plush Christmas party was given by a congenial coup1e, Karl and Arnel Hassenbrock in their lovely home, hosting 75 guests with a variety of delicious foods displayed in a most-appetizing way and Karl's speciality: homebaked bread, nice and warm with lots of homemade butter, took the prize; and do you know, on a side table, were two beautiful pots of hot soup: onion and old-fashioned potato soup. It seemed as if anything anyone wanted was there. The rooms were lavishly decorated and the mood was festive all around. (You know I had a thought of swiping a loaf, but I was a little, just a little ashamed; I really had my share already, Oh!) Again this year, for the eleventh time this lovely couple Kenneth and

Nelda Lawrence entertained their friends in their home for the last time; they are leaving Houston to make their home in Kerrville, Texas in the near future. They all wanted Frank Dvorak and his wife, Frances, to be with them also, but Frank doesn't like to go anywhere at night, so Kenneth decided they will come and visit with them for coffee after the usual dinner at their home. This pleased Frank and Frances very much to know that they all were willing to see them. Of course, Frances prepared her specialties of homemade pastries to enjoy with friends: Kenneth and Nelda Lawrence, Dr. Thomas Klima, Dr. Marcele Klima and their daughter, Eva, Dr. Erwin Adam, Dr. Vlasta Adam and their daughter, Alice; both young ladies are a delight. It was a pleasant evening with loyal friends. We all wish Kenneth and Nelda will find what they are looking for in their new adventure.

Saturday, December 20, our Choral Club of Lodge No. 88, visited the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville, Texas (as we did for the past years). This time we decided to dress in our Czech costumes. The guests, at the home, were overjoyed to see us and while we were singing, many were keeping time and humming along with the familiar Christmas carols and popular Czech songs. (I especially looked forward to seeing my friend Louise Janca).

We came to America the same time and on the same ship. Of course, then we were only children, but Louise had her dreams, and what dreams! Louise would strut up and down and brag about the clothes she will have, mainly a green velvet dress with a long train trailing behind her, which she never did. She married a wonderful man by the name of Svatik Janca and lived a peaceful life until Svatik passed away and now she enjoys the comfort of our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home.

After the program, the ladies in the kitchen set up tables with lots of goodies that melted in our mouths. I don't know if I have all the names of the ladies who were so nice to treat us. The apple strudle was baked by Mrs. Straznicky and Mrs. Slacalek, Mrs. Hrdlicka baked the delicious kolaches, and the cookies were baked by Mrs. Nowotny; we thank all of them for the delicious treat.

Mr. Marx, the administrator, was on hand with a friendly smile but we missed his dear wife; she passed so suddenly. This year our club, again, crocheted booties to keep the guests' feet nice and warm. One pair was given to each guest plus a bag of fruit and candy from the Lodge No. 88 Youth Club. The members of the Choral Club chipped in the amount to buy the yarn and the following crocheted the booties: Irma O'Conner, 26 pairs; Frances Dvorak, 11; Frances Olexa, 14; Estelle Kelly, 3; Emma Jarisch, 3; and Marie Stayton, 1. It was fun to do this and we hope our friends will enjoy wearing them. Happy New Year, 1981!

To close the year of 1980, we had the Texas Dutchmen. I hope you had your reservation to see the New Year come in. Oh! Please remember we will have our regular social nights in the future as usual. Come out and start the year right!

*** Hunting and Fishing News by the Wistners of Lodge No. 88, Houston As the season draws to a close, Mrs. Lea Wistner is proud to have bagged two nice fat bucks two days apart at their ranch near Crockett, Texas. Roger Wistner is not giving up because he still has a few days to get that big trophy.

A few weeks ago the Wistners went fishing near Galveston and this is a true fish story. They got ninetyfive pounds of red fish. This is one time they had to stop fishing and they were still biting. The ice chests were full. We had lots of fun.

The flag was presented by Darrell Murrow and he also led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We then remained standing for a moment of silence in the memory of our deceased members, Sister Frances Kneblik and Sister Rosie Hikel.

On our sick list, we have Sister Maureen Necas who was in a car accident; also her friend, Bea Lathrom, was in the accident with her and we wish both of them a speedy recovery. Bea was a visitor at our last meeting.

Birthday celebrants for December present were: Sisters Helen Tome and Arleen Tschoener, Brother Johnnie Svoboda, and youth members Myron Haisler and Rodney Posvar. (Last month I forgot Lodge No. 24 President Edwin Marek's name who had a birthday in November.)

Others included: Brother Jerry, Jr. and Sister LaVerne Cabla, Brother Raymond and Sister Doris Coots, Brother Joe and Sister Lorene Haisler, Brother Bobby and Sister Alice Hoelscher, Brother Dan and Sister Pat Sebek, and Brother and Sister Doris Svoboda.

Last month I left out a special anniversary which was President Edwin and Sister Nelda Marek; they celebrated their 25th so; to them and everyone celebrating their occasions, best wishes.

Starting our business with old business we got a report from the Rules and Regulations Committee; they presented their findings and they proposed some changes; then the members proposed some changes and, after much discussion, the changes were brought up for a vote and they were accepted so we accepted the new rules and regulations for the coming year.

New business brought to our attention that one of our members reached the age of 96 and that the Supreme Lodge will be presenting him with his cash paid-up policy. We want to congratulate Brother John C. Stepan of Shiner, Texas. We discussed about honoring him and we appointed Brother Curtis Schneider and Brother Ben Zabcik to check if he can come to our Christmas party so we could honor him.

We had our Christmas party Sunday, December 14 and it was enjoyed by everyone. We would like to thank Brother Billy Smetanka for donating the Christmas tree. We had a happy hour and then we were fortunate to have Brother John C. Stepan and some of his family to attend. We had Vice President Dan Sebek welcome them and then turned the program over to Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska; he then presented Brother John with a check of $1,000 and said a few words. Our lodge presented him with a check for $50. This was a real honor to us to have him and his lively family with us. We then enjoyed a delicious meal. When Brother John was leaving, we all sang "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow" and he truly is and we wish him many more years.

The youth had a nice program. Each youth club member presented their parents with a homemade lamp which was admired by all. Fruit was handed out and, again, a nice Christmas party was enjoyed by the membership.

Our next lodge meeting will be held January 14 at 7:30 p.m. and we will have installation of officers and Board of Trustees members, so please be present.

Dear Members: President R. L. Sadecky convened the regular monthly meeting Tuesday, December 16, at 7:30 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for a departed member, Brother Frank Henzen.

Our lodge extends sincere sympathy to the family. May he rest in peace. Brother Henzen served as our lodge secretary for many years and was an accomplished musician, playing in the Czech Concert Orchestra.

Secretary Salac read the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved and a report was given by the entertainment chairman, Second Vice President Paul Pokladnik; he also thanked everyone who helped in any way; he led the group during the past year.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the beautiful Christmas tree was donated to the lodge by the teens; and she also thanked her youth leaders for the help given her at the Christmas program.

Special Committee Sister Linda Bartek reported that the two bake sales were successful and thanked everyone for the help given during both events.

Sister Carlyn Ondrusek reported the party in Ennis hosted by the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council had plenty of good food. The new Council president is Brother Norbert Mikulec of Lodge No. 130, and future meetings will be announced.

Many members have donated to the Special Committee in the past months and President Sadecky thanked'all in attendance.

Brother Adolph Salac installed the new lodge officers and a picture has been sent to the Vestnik. Once again, we congratulate our lodge officers.

Head of the Youth Department Dear Members: As you can see by this quarterly report the various holidays had their effect on lodge and youth club meetings. Some of the youth clubs failed to make a report this quarter, but I am sure we will hear from them in the future. This is the primary responsibility of the youth leader, but the president should share this responsibility in reminding his youth leader about making this report. Please notice that the amounts have increased as a result of convention action - up 50C per active member from the previous 25C. Spring will be here before you know it and that means a busy time ahead for youth activities. Take a good look at the following report and ask yourself if there is any way YOU can help. The Youth Program needs the help and support of everyone. We have a lot to offer and if the youth are not there they are missing something and we are missing having them with us.

From the Youth Leaders Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Dear Readers and Friends: The attendance was fair at the youth club meeting held December 7,1980.

Our club members presented a Christmas program at the West Rest Home, December 10th and everyone enjoyed it, we also gave them gifts and candy.

Lodge No. 6 Christmas party was held December 21st. We served a delicious supper and presented an enjoyable program. Santa Claus also made a visit and distributed the bags of goodies to the young and old persons. The party was for all the lodge's members and their families.

The youth and adult members of the lodge decorated the hall, Decem ber 11th. I want to thank each of you for your help; that made the lodge look real pretty.

We still have some candy, cards, knives and cookbooks for sale; they always make nice gifts.

After Christmas we will be working on our scrapbook and we are planning a hayride.

Bobby Hykel was the only birthday celebrant in the month of December. Shirley Dobecka brought the cake. Thank you Shirley; it was pretty.

From the Youth Members Lodge No. 177, Academy The December 10 youth club meeting of Lodge No. 177 Academy was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Anne Cox. Johnny Ray Hicks led the Pledge of Allegiance.

There were eleven members and two adults present.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved as read.

There was no correspondence.

We have $765.40 in the treasury.

Under unfinished business we cancelled the lock-in party until after the Christmas Holidays.

For new business we discussed a December social. James Cox made a motion to go ice-skating; Jessica Washbourne seconded it. We, then, set a date for January 2nd. Johnny Ray Hicks made a motion to cancel the ice-skating. Kevin Beck seconded the motion.

We decided to go out to eat pizza and then go skating. We set a date for December 12th and we met at Mr. Gatti's at 5:30 p.m. Then we had planned to go skating froth 7:30 p.m. until 11 p.m. at Skate Haven. We also exchanged gifts.

Missy Hawk won $5; Jeanice Hawk, $3; and Ronson Pechal, $1 for door prizes.

Lodge No. 117, Robstown Dear Readers, December 20th the Robstown Youth Club held its regular monthly meeting and Christmas party. We exchanged gag gifts and sang Christmas songs and played games.

Everyone received a bag containing fruit, nuts and candy which was given by the adult lodge. I would like to thank the adult lodge for giving them to us and the people who fixed them.

Refreshments consisting of sandwiches, dip, chips, punch, etc. were served. The Social Committee planned the Christmas party and I would like to thank them for doing a good job.

IN MEMORIAM Mrs. Helen Zich, the widow of Ladislav Zich of 2415 Ryan Place Drive, Fort Worth, died Tuesday, December 16, 1980.

She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption, SPJST Lodge No. 92, the Ladies' Circle of SPJST No. 92, Sokol Friendship Club, and an associate member of KJZT No. 59.

Survivors include: sons, Frank Zich of Chicago, Illinois and Carl Zich of Fort Worth; daughters, Mrs. Charles (Mary) Pulliam, Mrs. Frank (Sophie ) Blazek, Mrs. Reginald (Amelia) Stovall of Fort Worth; nine grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren.

Her friends and relatives recited a rosary at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Harveson and Cole Funeral Home, 702 Eighth Avenue, with Msgr. William Botik, a nephew, officiating.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with Msgr. William Botik, celebrant.

Pallbearers were Franklin Chaloupka, Johnnie Chaloupka, Paul Pulliam, Robert Paul Guminski, Sammy Sanders and Reginald Stovall. Interment was in Mount Olivet. Arrangements were by Harveson and Cole.

Saturday, December 13, 1980, sixteen youth club members and three adults went to the Christmas tree forest at the Corpus Christi Art Museum. There were a lot of brightly decorated Christmas trees.

Then we went on a Christmas shopping trip at the Padre Staples Mall.

For supper each person ate where they wanted.

Mr. Hrncir drove the bus, the members were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Hrncir and Mrs. Betty Jurica. We returned to the Scout Hut about 8:30 p.m.

MRS. HELEN ZICH

Sister Zich died at her home, 2415 Ryan Place Drive, in Fort Worth, Texas, December 16, 1980, at the age of 98. She was born in Moravia, Czechoslovakia and immigrated to the United States in 1907. She came to Fort Worth in 1908 with her husband, the late Ladislav Zich, a tailor.

Sister Zich was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge No. 92, the Ladies' Circle and the Friendship Club.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, December 17 at Harveson and Cole Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Features John C. Stepan Outlives Policy Brother John C. Stepan became the 51st person in the history of the SPJST to outlive the actuarial table for his life insurance policy. A check for the face amount of Brother Stepan's policy was presented to him by SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard D. Mikeska during a special ceremony. Brother Stepan was honored by the presence of several members of his family and friends.

Lodge 24 Vice President Dan Sebek extended congratulations to Brother Stepan and presented him with a gift from the local lodge.

Brother John C. Stepan was born on February 8, 1886, in Austin County and_his family moved to Bell County when he was four years of age. His parents were Martin and Mary Stepan.

He was married to Lucy Petrekâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC; They made their home in the Red Ranger Community where he resided until three years ago. At present he resides at the Trinity Lutheran Home in Shiner, Texas.

Four children blessed the marriage of Brother and Sister Stepan. A son Johnnie Stepan, and a daughter Lydia Bartek reside in Baytown, Texas. One daughter Edna Krupka and one son, Clarence Stepan reside in Fort Worth, Texas.

Brother Stepan joined the SPJST on December 11, 1910. He is the third member of SPJST-Lodge 24 to outlive his policy.

We extend thanks to all who helped in making arrangements for the presentation ceremony. The members of the Supreme Lodge, the officers and members of Lodge 24 and the entire SPJST salute and congratulate Brother Stepan on his 96 birthday and wish him well (Information, courtesy Sister Nelda Marek and SL S-T office.) school and had resided in Bee County for 50 years, farming, and in the poultry business, in the Olmos Community.

He was married to the former Annie Motal, Sept. 28, 1930, in Hallettsville.

Brother Muhlstein was a member of the Catholic Church and the SPJST lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Annie Muhlstein of Beeville; one son, Lado Muhlstein, Jr. of Cupertino, Calif.; two daughters, Elizabeth Muhlstein of Balverde, and Mrs. Frances May of Milwaukee, Wis.; one brother, Albert Muhlstein of Schulenburg; three sisters, Mrs. Annie Svetlik of Beeville, Mrs. Hermenia Marek of Schulenburg and Mrs. Agnes Ehler of Richmond; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, September 19, at the Wilson Funeral Chapel with Father Lambert Eckelhoff officiating.

Mrs. B. C. Brown was the organist.

After cremation his remains were buried in a cemetery in Hallettsville.

Gregory Houpy, a member of Lodge Jaro No. 130, Dallas, and its Youth Club was priviledged to represent the SPJST during the Youth Spectacular Program of the Texas Fraternal Congress held in New Braunfels October 10-12, 1980.

For his performance, Gregory played the violin selections entitled "Emperor Waltz" by Johann Strauss; "Waltz" from Apollo Suite; and "Ciento Lindo," a Mexican folk song. He was accompanied by pianist David Sweeney, also of Dallas.

Gregory, age 15, is a freshman at W. T. White High School and a Leadership Corps member of Boy Scout Troop 1233, holding the rank of Star Scout and Ordeal membership in the Order of the Arrow, BSA. He is currently vice president of the Lodge 130 Youth Club led by Mrs. Ray (Kathy) Pottkotter, and received a first place award in Individual Talent (13-14) for his performance on the violin at the recent State YAD in Temple.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry J. Houpy and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Houpy, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Milton F. Vrla, Sr., all of Dallas.
