This week we are publishing a photo (to the left) of the SPJST adult members who were involved in the District III YAD. We will try to run most of the District III YAD pictures, if not all, in this issue. These were all taken and developed courtesy the Cechoslovak Publishing Company by Brother Linn Pescaia, publisher. The prints your editor took have not arrived from the developing company at this time, however, we feel sure that these pictures cover the event fully.

If, when we get to the Youth Section, which also includes District III Youth Counselor Wilma Nesuda's report and letter, and we find our space is too limited, we will hold some pictures over for next week. We feel that this was probably the largest DYAD in our SPJST's history and DYC Wilma Nesuda and assistant Rosemarie Banik, and all youth leaders are to be commended. The competition was strong and, surely, excellent! Everyone cannot win first place, indeed, and our youth and

Today, July 4, as I write this, is the _Ath anniversary of our Nadon's Declaration of Independence.

This day causes one to reflect the events that are happening in the world and pander, how will our Nation be faring in the next two years, as we approach our 200th birthday? Historians have pointed out that the history, of republics show that their average duration is about 200 years. This is certainly a depressing thought. Let this not be true of our United States!

Fraternalism in action: Because Thursday is our heaviest day, mail wise, one of our typesetters took Monday as his holiday and worked on the 4th. We cancelled our planned trip to Lodge No. 74, Lovelady by a call to Brother Rudy Hafner and all turned out well because our mall was extremely heavy today and your Vestnik will be on time. Our appreciative thanks to Brother Ripley of Lodge 36, West.

• An Indian lecturer, Charles Eagle Plume, told of an old Indian who was entertained in one of our large cities. He was taken to the best night clubs, heard the swing bands, and was shown how white men have their fun. He sat through a number of movies, and was feverishly rushed from place to place and given a taste of modern life in all its phases.

When the entertaining was finished, the old Indian was asked what he thought of it. "Ugh," he grunted, "white man must be unhappy — work so hard to have good time — no have good time at all. Indian, he sit on rock and watch sun go down every night, Much good time. Moonlight on rippling water — f much good time.

It was a humble wasp which first gave the world paper. For centuries primitive man had carved hieroglyphics on stone, while following generations "wrote" on metal slabs, clay tablets, wax, and animal skins. Then along came the paper wasp, which chews vegetable fiber to pulp to form its nest. Ts'ai Lun, a Chinese minister, studied the habits of the wasp and in 105 A.D. successfully produced the first paper from bark and old linen.

Unfortunately, the Chinese kept their secret for hundreds of years, and it was not until the 12th century that the news reached Europe.

Mark Twain was always impressed by the story of an industrious boy who became as millionaire. One of the things which remained in his mind was the fact that the boy had gotten his big chance by being noticed by a big businessman while in the act of picking up a pin from the sidewalk.

When Mark Twain went to look for a job he deliberately went to the street in front of an office window and began to pick up some pins which he had surreptitiously strewn about. After a while he did succeed in attracting the attention of one of the men in the office. He came out into the street and, instead of the expected praise at such industry; Twain was astonished to hear the man say, "Here you, haven't you anything better to do than pick up pins in the street?

You must be an utterly idle and worthless fool."

Features SPJST LODGE BUILDING PROJECTS GO FORWARD

Progress comes in many shapes and forms. In our SPJST lodges, physical progress usually takes the form of either a new lodge or extensive renovation and expansion of the existing facilities. In this short series of feature articles, we will be focusing on those lodges that are either constructing new halls or expanding their present facilities.

Tyrs, Holland Lodge No. (Third in a series) I remember the date well. It was March 31st, 1963, and the date of the District II spring meeting that year in Taylor. It was one of my

first SPJST district meetings and I met a lot of people. During the meeting it was announced that the lodge home of Lodge 80, Holland had burned the previous evening, 30 March. Later I saw the sad look on the face of that lodge's president, Brother Joe Barabas, whom I had the pleasure of also meeting for the first time.

The destruction of a lodge home '7,17 fire is always a sad and tragic 137s, both to the membership of a lod ge and the communit:- as a whole.

The original hall and home of Lodge 80, Holland, which had been added to and remodeled a number of times, was lost to fire on that Saturday in March of 1763. Undaunted and undeterred, the memkership decided to re-build imme-

Newsbriefs Junek Reunion

The Junek reunion will be held Sunday, July 14th, at the SPJST Hall in Snook. We will have barbecue, beans and potato salad. You may bring sweets or salad. —Reunion Committee * Reran Reunion Descendants of the Beran clan will hold their 4th reunion on July 14, at the VFW Hall, Moulton. EVeryone is asked to bring a basket lunch for the noon meal. Registration will start at 10 a.m. Everyone notify your families who are related to the immediate Berans.

stage re-located at the east end of the hall at Lodge 80, Holland. Past visitors will recall that the stage was against the wall to the right as this picture is taken. The paneling and lighting are very attractive and add to the interior beauty of the hall.

4 diately and set about doing so. I made several trips to the lodge during the summer of 1963 and pictorially recorded the progress of the new construction in the Vestnik that year. Many of the active members then worked hard and contributed manual labor in the construction of the present hall.

The new and present hall was dedicated on October 20th, 1963, only a few short months after the first hail had burned. It is always a special tribute to the membership and officers of any lodge when they set about re-building after a complete loss, and it is a distinct credit to their determination and efforts.

The present hall is 60' x 120', excluding the new stage area, 24'x40', which was recently added and includes dressing rooms and rest rooms backstage. The dance floor area is 30' x60'.

In their current program of expansion and improvements, the lodge has completed Phase I, which involved moving the stage from the south side of the hall and re-locating it at the east end of the hall.

(See accompanying picture). The new stage area, with its new paneling and tasteful lighting is very attractive and adds to the inside beauty of the hall.

Phase II of the expansion and improvements will include completely remodeling the entrance area so that the entrance would be into the dancing area instead of into the bar area. It is planned that the entrance include two glass sliding doors. The ticket booth will be re-located, and the front entrance would be graced with em covered drive-through entrance similar to that of Lodge No. 47, Seaton. These front entrance improvements have been discussed in recent lodge meetings and the decision has been made to carry out these improvements, with the details still to be approved. Certain portions of this are still in the planning stage. The front entrance improvements should get underway within a month or two and be completed in the spring of 1975.

Phase III of the expansion and improvements at Lodge 80 will include a 30' x 70' addition to the south side of the building to provide additional rest rooms, seating and table capacity, and possible

Another project involves reworking the front gates and entrance to the property with heavier poles, heavy duty gates and possibly additional lighting.

In our trip to Lodge 80 for the accompanying pictures and information on this article on Wednesday,June 26th, we met with some of the lodge officers, and it was pointed out that the membership wanted to complete one phase of the expansion and improvements before going on to the next. The re-location of the stage has been completed, and so the next phase will involve the front entrance area. We are indebted to President David Ivicic, Secretary Alvin D. Martinets, Financial Secretary Clifton Martinets, and Honorary President Joe Barabas for their patience and assistance in compiling this information. We reminisced about the period of construction of the present hall during the summer of 1963 and some of the people who assisted and volunteered their time and labor in the construction. It was a hot summer that year; Brother Baralbas recalled that there had been over 30 days of 100-plus degree temperatures that summer.

The mortgage on the present lodge hall was burned (literally) a few years ago, and it is completely clear of debt and obligation.

A nice barbecue house has also been built in recent years for picnics and other functions. Refrigerated air-conditioning replacied water coolers a few years back. The hall facilities have frequently been the scene of District YADs and district meetings, plus various SPJST seminars.

The present officers of Lodge No. 80, Holland are: President David Ivicic, Vice President Daniel Bohac, Secretary Alvin D. Martinets, Financial Secretary Clifton Martinets, and Treasurer Glen Latham.

The Property Committee, which is the committee responsible for the planning of these improvements and submitting them to the lodge membership for approval, consists of the following: Chairman Clifton Martinets, Coleman Benner, and Dick Latham.

MRS. EDWARD KIETH ADAMS KUTACH-ADAMS VOWS TOLD

The Catholic Church of Alvin was the setting for the wedding April 20 of Miss Paulette Marie Kutach and Edward Keith Adams. Father Jerry Meager officiated in the doub le-ring ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Olga Kutach and the late Paul F. Kutach of Alvin; the groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe.

Adams of Franklin, Ohio.

The altar was adorned with two large floral arrangements of white mums, daisies and porn poms.

Music for the wedding was provided by Mrs. Ann Orsak at the organ who accompanied Bobbie 0' Brien as he sang, "The Twelveth of Never" and "Lords Prayer", "Ave Maria" was played as a basket of daisies was given to the Blessed Virgin Mary by the bride.

Given in marriage by her uncle, Mike Brenek, the bride wore a long formal designers gown of organza featuring an empire bodice appliqued with Venice lace motifs accented with bridal pearls. Pearls enhanced the wedding ring collar

6 of lace. Venice lace and pearls extended over the shoulders of the long sheer sleeves which ended in a deep lace and ruffled edged Juliet cuff. The A line skirt of the gown cascaded into a watteau train with a deep lace edged flounce sweeping to the floor in full chapel length.

The bridal coif was a tiered laceedged fingertip veil of imported English illusion Which was attached to a Juliet hat of matching Venice lace with a crown scalloping of bridal pearls.

The bride carried a cascade bouquet consisting of white daises and baby breath. As the bride and her uncle approached the altar, the bride paused to present her mother a long-stemmed red rose and to kiss her on the cheek. To observe family tradition, the bride wore a garter, with a penny and a gold cross given to her as a baby.

She borrowed a prayer book that was carried by her mother in her own wedding.

Miss Terry Wemett served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids inched ed Ellen Kutach of El Campo and Janelle Brenek of Houston, cousins of the bride; Pat Kubala of Lake Jackson, and Linda Meyer of Austin. Pam Zahn, cousin of the bride from San Antonio, served as flower girl.

The maid of honor and bridesmaids wore floor length gowns of pink flowered sheer organza with fitted waist. The dresses featured a ruffled neck with a large ruffle at the bottom of the dress, long puffed sleeves gathered to long cuffs which were accented with six small buttons. Light pink hats accented with a hot pink bow and ribbon were worn. The maid of hon or wore a dark pink hat. The flower girl wore a floor length dress similar to the bridesmaids and fresh daisies were worn as a headpiece.

The attendants carried pink baskets of pink daisies and baby's breath. They wore a chain necklace given by the bride.

Witnesses for the bride and groom were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kutach, aunt and uncle of the bride from El Campo.

The best man was Rick Corbin of Houston. Groomsmen were Wayne Cummings of Houston, Jerry Kutach, Deanne Pesek of Pearland,

V!STNIK cousins of the bride and Rickey Qurrels of Lake Jackson. Ring bearer and escort for the flower girl was Dodd Naiser, cousin of the bride from Columbus. Ronnie Turner of Alvin and Jerry Gergen of Houston served as ushers. Altar boys were Frank and Billy Zahn from San Antonio and Larry Meyer.

For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Olga Kutach chose a rose pink floor-length double knit dress with white accessories accented with a purple orchid corsage. The bride's grandmother Mrs. Joe Morris of Sweet Home wore a street length blue suit with white accessories accented a white carnation corsage. Godmother of the bride, Mrs. Martin Pesek of Sweet Home wore a turquoise street length dress accented with a white carnation corsage.

A barbecue dinner was served in St. Johris Parish Hall following the mass.

The bride and groom table was covered with a white lace table cloth. A three tier cake with pink daisies and sugar bells on top was at one end. Mrs. Nancy Cummings and Janet Richardson, both of Houston, served the wedding cake.

At the other end of the table was the groom's cake of German chocol ate with a ball and chain decorating the top. The groom's cake was served by Miss Pam Loftin.

The table also held two candelabras and the bride's bouquet.

The dinner table for the wedding party was decorated with the five bridesmaids' bouquets. Mrs. George Meyer, Mrs. Marvin Appelt, Mrs. J. Loby, and Mrs. Melvin Martin served the dinner.

The table holding the bride's book was decorated with a white satin tablecloth, miniature bride and groom, a punch bowl filled with pink rice bags and a bowl of scrolls. Miss Janice Franz of Houston served as registrar. Miss Debbie Jones pinned on each guests miniature rings tied with pink ribbon.

For travel the bride chose a pink and white pants suit of double knit with white accessories. Following a week's wedding trip to Cozumel, Yucatan the couple will reside in Houston.

Courtesies extended to the couple was a rehearsal dinner April 19 at the Mexican Village hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Marcos Brenek. A trout dinner was served with pink champagne, the bride and groom exchan ged gifts and presented their at• tendants remembrance gifts.

Paulette Marie is the granddaughter of Mr. an Mrs Joe N. Morris cf Sweet Horne, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kutach cf Speaks.

Lovers Lane United Methodist Church was the setting May 17 for the wedding of Miss Debra Folsom and Don Michael Jarma, senior students at Southern Methodist University.

The Rev. Thomas J. Shipp performed the double ring ceremony and honor attendants were Mrs. Wayne Miller, the bride's sister; the bride's cousin, Miss Julie Weatherford and Creed Ford.

Bridesmaids were Patti Tessman, Jeaneal Flowers, Linda Eeni.endoef, Lisa Pomeroy and Lynn Dalton, bride's cousin.

Groomsmen were Steve Folsom, Johnnie Folsom, brothers of the bride, John Blackburn, Joe Nobles, Don Lennox, and Wayne Miller.

Lighting the candles were Bobby Dryden and Richard Hartin.

A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, the bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Skillern Folsom, 5909 Hatraby Court. She was an SMU cheerleader for three years.

Mr. and Mrs. Ben Jarma, 9512 Leaside Drive, are parents of the bridegroom, a graduate of Lake Highlands High School. He is a member of Sigma] Alpha Epsilon fraternity and has lettered in football and baseball at SMU. Mr. Folsom gave his daughter in marriage.

After the wedding a reception was held in the garden of the bride's parents.

Following a wedding trip to Acapulco, the couple is living in Dallas.

Don and his parents are members of Lodge No. 84, Dallas.

by Andela Zabransky and the youth door prize went to Arlene Zak. Our next meeting will be July 14, at the Grant Building, beginning at 2 p.m. July birthdays will be honored. Refreshments and lunch will be served. Our Family Day Dinner will be discussed and plans made. See you all then!

LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE Dear Members, Our last meeting was held Sunday, June 9 at the Grant Building.

Annie Zabransky led our lodge in the pledge to the U.S. flag.

The minutes of our last meeting were not read due to the absence of our secretary.

Youth Leader Helen Zabransky gave her report.

After al short discussion, it was decided to have our annual family day dinner in August. The final plans will be made at our July meeting.

Refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned.

LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members, Hope these delightful summer days find everyone well and happy.

Our sick list is a little smaller this time and, hopefully, it will stay this way for a while. Sister Estebelle Hubenak is recovering from surgery, as is Joe Kubin, the husband of Sister Kubin. A fast recovery to both of you. Also, Sister Zich, mother of our president, Brother Carl Zich, had the misfortune of breaking her arm and had to spend some time in the hospital.

Hope to see your smiling face at our next meeting, Grandma Zich!

We have had a couple of new arrivals this past month. Brother and Sister Joe Huberrak are grandparents again, their son. Gordon, and his wife had a baby girl. Also, Brother and Sister Alholm are grandparents for the first time.

Their son Tony, and his wife Kathleen, are the proud parents of a baby boy, named Matthew James.

This also makes Brother and Sister Tirk, of our lodge, great-grand:,.arents.

At our last meeting, prizes were awarded to some of our mothers and fathers: Oldest mother — Sister Paprskar, Oldest father — Brother Strnad, Youngest mother — Sister Mary Ann Krivanek, Youngest father — Brother Joe Frank Juran. Our youth also had a drawing and the lucky ones were:

Dear Members: Well, summer has finally arrived and can be felt the minute you leave the air-conditioner.

Today, at 7:15 p.m., we went to see the SPJST softball team win another one. Have you seen any of their games? They are real exciting!

Good news and bad news: the bad first. In my last article I left Brother John Kubacak's name off the list of those who helped work the sound equipment and Brother Adolph Salac's name from the list of those helping polish the dance floor. Boy, that's dumb — everybody knows these two members are always willing to help and do. My apologies. The good news — Brother Willie Ondrusek was moved from the coronary unit to a private room at St. Paul's Hospital and is getting stronger each day. Brother Frank Steiner is feeling much better after a weekend bout with the virus; and Brother Sid and Sister Justine Pokladnik celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary last Sunday, June 30, with a dinner and a dance arranged by their children. It was a beautiful evening, and Sister Justine never looked prettier in at pink formal.

Our congratulations, may you share many more years of love and happiness together.

The Princess Ball is scheduled for July 20th. Charlie Patak and his band members promise good music for your dancing pleasure.

How can you stay away?

July 14th is our lodge picnic at the Pokladnik farm at Ennis. It's all right to arrive early and catch up on breathing all that clean fresh air you have missed since last year at this time, you will want to bring along fishing gear, if you plan to walk to the tank and compete in the fishing contest, tables, chairs, and dominoes, if you plan to just relax and play a few games. We need tables to use during the lunch also. The old-timers of our ball team just might challenge our present members to 9 innings (if they can hold up), if

Barbecue on bun, ranch style beans, onions, pickles, potato salad or shoestring potatoes and dessert is the menu for $1.25 adult, 75c child, and frankfurters for 0e being served from 1 p.m. The kitchen crew, asks for pastry or potato salad; either will be appreciated. Good music will be heard all evening and those huge pecan trees are sure to shield you from the sunshine, but bring a hat — just in case.

Take Interstate enghway No. 45 and exit on Farm Road No. 85 and watch for signs. Bring your relatives and friends; all of them!

The dance Friday, June 28th, with Gaylen Ackley and the Good Times was a sellout. It was attended by guests attired in westernstyle clothes and who love western music. Saturday, June 29th, the Gilbert Kautz ,Orchestra provided the soft and dreamy tunes for the swaying couples on the Chandelier Ballroom dance floor. It was a semi-formal affair and the ladies dressed in formal gowns were a beautiful sight to see. Both dances were hosted by members of the entertainment committee; the ladies at the door always pleasant in greeting our guests and helping make the evening pleasant for everyone present.

The month of July will bring to our guests a variety to •choose from.

July 6th we had the Vrazels; July 12th, Danny Krchnak, a/ western dance; July 13th, The Knights of Dixie, and the special on July 20th — mark your calendar for the once-a-year affair, the annual Hawaiian Dance. Had a surprise call from Sister Theo Cmelka, the wife of the late Brother Fred Cmelka, who was an ardent Hlahol Dramatic Club member and participated in many Czech plays. He passed away January 21st, 1972, at the age of 72 years. Sister Theo Cmelka (we used to call her Bohunka, when she was a little girl), called to inform me of her second cousin's death, Brother Jos. Janca, member of Lodge No. 75; he passed away on Tuesday, June 18th, in the Polly Ryon Hospital and was laid to rest Wednesday, July 19th. I knew Jas. Janca since 1915 and his wife, Louise, since we came to America together as youngsters. Joe and Louise used to came from Richmond, where they live, to Lodge No. 88, to see every play especially Czech plays presented by the Mahal Dramatic Club until his health interferred in traveling to Houston.

Joe is survived by his wife, Louise Janca; one daughter, Louise, married to Vince Neuman; one grandson, and one granddaughter. I wish to express my sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.

Funeral services were held for Sister Annie Kostelnik on Monday, July 1st, at the Heights Funeral Home. Sister Kostelnik passed away Saturday, June 29th at the age of 82 years. She was the mother of Sister Bessie Pavlicek married to Jerry Pavlicek. Sister Annie, while she still was able, was driving a small car and always attended all functions at Lodge No. 88 and she especially loved the Czech plays; she was a devoted lodge member. The last fourteen Months she resided in the Briar Nursing Home in Hempstead, Texas. She is survived by a daughter, Bessie Pavlicek; granddaughter Katherine Stepan, and three greatgrandsons, Kenny, Brent, and Derrick Stepan. President of Lodge No. 88, Brother E. J. Hanka, officiated the words of comfort to the family were very touching and welldelivered. We express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.

Another couple of proud grandparents are strutting around Lodge No. 88 and announcing the precious addition to their family tree.

VESTNIK 'They are none other than Quenton and Earline Hoffman who became grandparents to a granddaughter, Catherine Ann Hoffman, born June 24th to 'Quenton II and Trisha .

At Table No. 40, Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Vann celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary with a group of friends. They have one son, Thomas, and one granddaughter, April Vann. They are frequent visitors to our dances and love the environment of our lodge. Many happy wishes for a long life.

A very spacial affair took place at our lodge Sunday, June 30th.

Two lovely and lucky people were celebrating the golden anniversary of 50 years of happy married life.

Brother Joe and Mary Fusig were honored by their daughter, Helen Hegwood, and son, J. Fusig, with a party and 300 guests were present.

Mary and Joe are a spry and very happy couple and look like newlyweds. Mary wore a beautiful light blue gown which was very becoming and a corsage to match. Refreshments and a delicious dinner (prepared by the Wehring catering service) the bride's and groom's cakes were served by lovely young ladies. The tables were appropriately decorated, which was the art of Edna Wehring. It was a lovely anniversary celebration, everyone present wished the lucky couple many years of happy and healthy life together.

A formal church wedding took place Saturday, June 29th, at St. Ambrose Church. Diana Dee, the daughter of Sister Ann and Brother August Urbanovsky, was married to Keith A. Markuson, Jr., in a candle light, double ring wedding ceremony. The father walked the bride to the altar to give her away to the waiting groom. Four lovely bridesmaids in sky blue gowns and handsome groomsmen surrounded the young couple as they were married. The reception took place in the church's parish hall. The bride's mother, Ann Urbanovsky, wore a French blue gown and the groom's mother, Mrs. Markuson, wore a gown in coral. The happy couple left for a brief honeymoon and will make their home here in Houston. Wishing you a happy and prosperous life.

Fortieth wedding anniversary

They have two children, Karen and Laura, and they make Jimmie and Bettie .very happy and proud erardpa_ein. With them at the table were friends from Lake Jackson, Henrietta, and Bill Jester. Hcpe you all enjoyed the evening. Lodge No. 88 extends good wishes for many, many years to come. We will e looking for you again.

Another wedding took place at the Houston Brethren Church Saturday, June 2- th, at 7 p.m. when handsome bachelor Bobby Dobesh decided to give up his freedom and married Miss Patricia' Floyd, a pretty petite brunette. The bride wore a long sea green gown and head dress to match. The maid of honor, Miss Diane Morris was dressed in a flowered gown and wore a picture hat. Eugene Dobesh, brother of the groom, served as best man. A lovely reception was held in the church's parish hall. Many of the guests were from out of town. I was pleased to see Mrs Divoky from Arcola(?) and Lillie Follett (Spacek), and her sister.

Cecilia, from Richmond. The wed ding party and many guests enjoyed the dance at Lodge No. 88 after the reception.

Brother Thomas and Clara Jecmenek were enjoying a visit by their daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Durtschi, and granddaughter, Barbara, from Fort Wayne, Indiana, and a grandson, Steve Durtschi, from Detroit, Michigan. After visiting with the family one week they departed for home on Wednesday, June 26th.

Clara and Thomas are planning on leaving for Las Vegas on July 5th, for a nice vacation in the company of Joe and Della Miksch. Good luck to all of you.

Was nice to see and have a brief chat with Brother and Sister Pavey from Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth.

They were here in Houston to attend the wedding of Diana Dee Urbanovsky and after the wedding they stopped at Lodge No. 88 with Johnnie and Judy Sindel. The Paveys will spend a week visiting the Sindels at their summer home `.6 Holiday Lake and do some fishing and relaxing. Have a nice time

LODGE NO. 173, GALVESTON Dear Members and Friends: The June meeting was opened by Pres. Alvin J. Sefcik. The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was recited by the membership. Roll call of officers revealed all to be present except Sister Audrey Kaluza, chairman of the Entertainment Committee. Following a minor correcton the minutes were accepted as read.

Excerpts from the minutes revealed the death of Brother Anton Pyka, who had been a member since 1964; A. L. Heins, hustand of Sister Rosie Heins, and Emil Macik, brother of Brother Louis Macik.

May they rest in peace. Our sympathy is extended to their families.

Several members have been confined to the hospital for surgery and other medical reasons, among them are Sisters Ann Kennedy, Elizabeth Kivch, Agnes Valusek, Mary Cordray, and Brother Sam Portacci. We wish for them speedy recoveries and good health.

Mark E. Gondesen was welcomed as an adult member.

A thank-you card was received from Sister Amalie Macik and a thank-you in person, from Sister Mary Cordray, who were both present, for the get-well cards they had received.

The financial secretary and treasurer presented their reports which were approved.

Sister Mary O'Rear, youth leader, reported on the activities of the youth club. Stephenie Mattes and Joseph C. Wytovak represented the lodge at the recent Princess Ball held at Lodge No. 83 in Houston.

The members of the youth club were preparing their entries for the YAD Arts and Crafts to be held on June 9th at Lodge No. 172, Pasadena.

Eugene Sefcik and Philip Lewis were 1974 graduates from their respective high schools. Eugene entered State Industrial Arts Meet and was awarded second place for his gun cabinet. Philip achieved a 4.0 grade average for academic excellence. Stephenie Ntattes was inducted into the National Honor Society, and Michael Sefcik was awarded second place in the draft-

ing test at the State Industrial Arts Meet, and is also a member of the National Honor Society. The above are all members of the youth club.

Other youth members are also being recognized. Among the graduates are Kathy Portacci, co-valedictorian of her class and first runner-up in the recent Port Arthur Beauty Contest; Rhonda Whitted, a member of the National Honor Society, Danny Sefcik and Jean Baumann. It is no wonder that our adult members are so proud of their youth members and their achievements. May everything that is good come their way as they go on to further their education.

The youth club is holding their Beach Party in Galveston on Sunday, July 14th. They will meet at 57th St. and Seawall Boulevard at 3 p.m. Come prepared to have fun and enjoy the refreshments.

It was reported that Sister Peregrina Dusek was celebrating her 93rd birthday as of June 2nd. Sister Dusek became a member of the former Lodge Rozkvet No. 62, on February 28, 1909, of which her late husband, Adolf Dusek, was a charter member. Her son, daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren are also members of Lodge No. 173, Galveston. We wish for her the very best of health and good wishes.

President Sefcik announced that the committees named last year would continue to serve for 1974.

The next meeting was set for the second Sunday in July (the 14th) at 2 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 501 N. Delaney, LaMarque.

Gil Vetters hurled the first five innings, allowing 3 hits, 2 war's, and had 1 strikeout, and Lionel Schulz hurled the last two innings allowing 2 hits, 1 walk, and had 2 strikeouts. Both pitchers looked very good on the mound.

Leading hitters were Mark Hammond, a new player who just joined the team two weeks ago, who is an SMU football player and also lettered on the SMU baseball team this season; he had 3 hits, 2 doubles and a single, Harry Wilkerson with 2 singles, Greg Driscoll with a triple, Dave Ellison with a single, Connie Brennan who had a single, a sacrifice and a walk, and Jeff Burton with a triple.

Monday night. July 8th we are schedule-1 to play the First Citizens Bank team and this will be our last game in our Monday night league. Currently, we have a 4-win, 1-loss record and this assures us of a tie for the second half and another win will assure us of winn ing the second half championship.

In our Thursday night league, we have 3 wins and 1 loss and we 'ire either tied for first place, or -ne game ahead and we could win the second half championship if we continue to play as well as we e been playing lately.

Leshikar-Shiller Reunion Held Coming together in La Grange, Texas, for their annual June reunion at the American Legion Hall were over a hundred descendants of the Leshikars and Shillers, early Texas Czech settlers. Mrs. Leon (Janice) Sula and daughters Karen and Laurie of Pasadena, Texas, registered and greeted the family members and guests.

A delicious old-fashioned covered-dish lunch was enjoyed at noon, and throughout the afternoon the gathering was entertained by the beautiful accordion music of Edward Paul Karisch, son of Mr, and Mrs. Edward Paul Karisch, 12535 1\1pssycup, Houston.

Mr. Calvin Cervenka of Rogers, Texas, and member of the staff of Temple Junior College, gave a short talk on the Czech community of Texas and its cultural contribution to our state.

The eldest relative attending was Mr. Joe C. Esterak of Smithville (91 years), and the youngest was Joe Maresh Ternus, son of Mr. and • Mrs. Joe Ternus of Austin, two months old.

In addition to Mrs. Leon Sula, other members of the Reunion Committee are Mr. Alfred Kroulik of Houston, who served as chairman of the short meeting; Mr. T'Odon Leshikar, 1211 Lorrain, Austin, in charge of sending the invitations; Mrs. T'Odon Leshikar, treasurer; and Mrs. Guy Oliphint of Houston, secretary.

The reunion in 1975 will again be held in the air-conditioned American Legion Hall in La Grange, the second Sunday in June.

The purpose of this meeting was to consider the possible sale of royalty interests owned and identified as RMO No. 5, and RMO No. 67.

The RMO No. 67 was taken up first. This property consists of oil, gas, and mineral interests. The SPJST acquired the p-operty in 1936 by foreclosure and later recerved all of the mineral rights when it was sold. Oil and gas was discovered on the property and the SPJST has been receiving ovalty income.

A report on on offer to buy this royalty interest was first made i n the April 10-11. 1974 SuPreme T od g e meeting Portions of these minutes relating to the offer were read Each of the board members then, in turn, presented their points of view and the matter was lengthily and thoroughly discessed.

After taking a recess for lunch, a motion was made and unanimously passed that the offer be ected.

It was decided on another unanimously passed motion to make a counter offer to the prospective buyer and if accepted by the buyer, the Supreme Lodge officers were riven authority to make a gale.

The offer on RMO No. 5 was then taken up and after considerable discussion, a motion to table carried unanimously.

The meeting adjourned at 2:15 p.m. *** As a matter of information, the sale was subsequently made on June 20th.

DISTRICT III ACTIVELY PARTICIPATES IN YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT DAY Three hundred and thirty contest entries from 217 active SPJST youth called for a great amount of enthusiasm, detailed planning and tireless application in the 1974 youth activity. That no errors were made in our tabulation is wonderful. The few made in staging the affair is remarkable.

The Royalty contest, of course, is still the glamour event and 11 young people competed with better than average speech content.

Posters were well made. Talents were exceptionally well performed.

There were 261 entries in the Arts and Crafts, with quality items distributed evenly in the four age brackets. District contests indicate that Lodge 84, with 65 active members entered 34 contests with 55 entries, and on pro rata figures, Lodge 130 came in with 48 entries in 33 contests for their 15 active members. Quite a record.

LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE Dear Readers, Our youth club held their June meeting on Sunday, June 9th. They discussed their bike hike that was held in May. Plans were also made for a skating party on June 21st. YAD was also discussed and cards were handed out.

It was decided to meet at the Grant Building on June 25th to start plans for our poster.

The youth were asked to think of a money-making project for our club, at the annual Family Day in August.

Visiting our meeting was Emilie Zatopek of Victoria.

Following the adult meeting the youth club presented a. short Father's Day program. Poems were read by Kathy Zak and Annie Zabransky. The song, "Faith of Our Fathers" was sung by the club. Flowers were pinned on the fathers.

The adult door prize was won

by Mrs. Frank Zabransky, while the youth prize went to Arlene Zak. The June cake was won by Marilyn Sevcik. The special father's prize was won by Mr. Frank Zabransky.

On June 21st, at 7 p.m., our youth club members and their families went skating. The club Also presented Marilyn Sevcik, the assistant youth leader, with a birthday cake. Everyone had a great time and hope to do it again, soon.

Our next meeting is on July 14th, at the Grant Building, so try to come and have an enjoyable afternoon with us.

I am also looking forward to seeing everyone at the YAD, at tillje, July 21st.

Fraternally, Helen Zabransky, Youth Leader (6.2,-74) LODGE NO. 130, DALLAS Dear Members, YAD has once again come and gone. Elm Mott's Linden Hall deserves a big "thank you" for being such good hosts and serving such a delicious lunch and working so hard preparing for the day's activities.

16 I must tell my youth club how extremely proud I was of ALL of them and their entries. As I have said so many times before, I am pleased if they win, but more important to me is the fact that they enter. When I stopped to post my points for the youth club members attending YAD, I was astounded to see that we had better than 94% attendance and participation of our youth club that day! This is the greatest compliment you can give me as youth leader. To you who attended for the first time (the Mikulec.s, the Stancils and the Pokladniks) I hope that this is the first of many, many YADs for you. We were so happy to have you there and participating. To our "old timers" it is always so good to have you there representing us.

One of the most difficult things in being a youth leader is to see our young people present them selves in their talents and royalty competitions. The realization hits you quite bluntly that these are no longer our children, but young adults, confident, and self-assured.

How could Carol have changed overnight into the beautiful and poised young lady we saw that day?

Or when, did Scott ever become serious enough to surprise us all in the way he presented his talk? And our talent entries — Anne Oates, Rita and Carol Kamas, and Chris Stancil representing the teens and Michael and Gregory Houpy, Jeff and Karen Mikulec, Carol Skrabanek, Dan Rhodes, John Vrla, and Michelle Poklatinik representing the juniors — ALL of you were great. Even though you all aren't "Parmas" I still feel you are mine and we are related by the closest tie of all — friendship.

So on to other activities. We did have a very successful dance sponsored by our Mother Lodge on June 22nd. Youth club had quite a profitable evening in the kitchen.

We now need to complete our plans for District III camp and for our outing to Six Flags on July 17th.

We will fill out cards at our next regularly scheduled meeting on July 14th for Camp, so if you want to go, please be sure to attend this meeting. Also, we still plan to meet at my house (time to be set at the meeting) for a sack lunch and then on to Six Flags on the 17th.

I do want to congratulate our new officers for the coming Year.

These classes are held every Thursday from. 10 until 2 with a break for lunch. Many beautiful ceramic pieces are being turned out. We have very talented youth.

Dear Members: After being inactive over ten years with the youth activities on the local lodge and district levels prior to our present residence, this leader feels that she was able to get a good glimpse and receive the initiative to enable her to see what elements were involved, including the numerous people who took part in such a huge undertaking at the District III YAD in Elm Mott, recently.

Altogether; our club had 27 entries; we had two first place winners, Dolores Haberl, ages 15-17 Talent, and Tim Haberl, 10-12 Pictorial Arts. Honorable mention awards went to Carol Mynar, age 10-12 Food and Handicraft; Darlene Zahirniak, 13-14 Hobby Kits; and Dolores Haberl, third place, 15-17 Hobby Kits.

All of us from Lodge 54 were proud to have royalty representatives, consisting of Queen Janette Kocurek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Kocurek, and Duchess Tammy Gerik, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Gerik, all of West. Many

thanks to the mother lodge for furnishing corsages to• our royal representatives. The flowers were appreciated very much. Congratulations to the above-mentioned contestants as well as those who won first places and who will now compete at the state level.

Our club members also took an active part in the district YAD charity project. Tickets were sold on an electric ice cream freezer.

District III Sales Repr. Alvin Nesuda was the lucky winner; we hope he enjoys the freezer, especially when he puts it to use for the first time.

Camp has been an important topic at our last meeting. According to our rules, camp applications have been distributed to the in-. terested youngsters and then will be forwarded to our DYC' in ample time. All of us are anxious to find out what three days at camp will have in store for us.

Several parents of SPJST Lodge No. 54 baseball team members witnessed an exciting game at Trojan Field in West on Thursday evening, June 27. The all-girl team 'was undefeated throughout the season which automatically declar ed them champions of 1974. On the next evening, a large trophy was presented to the team which will be displayed at the lodge home for all of us to admire. Delaine Wolf, Donna Pustejovsky, Elisa Tobola, Laurie Zahirniak, 'Tammy Gerik and Jackie Zahirniak (SPJST members of our youth club), were among the team members. Our heartiest congratulations to them and their team manager, Mr. Emil Plasek, Jr., of West. Other club members, Edwin Sefcik and Troy Gerik, were on the Gerik Exxon pee wee team.

The youth club had another successful pastry sale June 28 at West Bank and Trust. My most humble thanks to the consistant contributors, and to the youth who took charge and did a fine job in /fulfilling their obrtigations. The names of the pastry donors will be acknowledged at the mother lodge meeting.

It was a pleasure working with my assistants , Mona Zahirniak and Margie Haberl, and Agnes Mynar was also a great help; plus the ones whom I had the privilege of tabulating score sheets with throughout the entire afternoon

at District III YAD. Last, but not least, the ones who strive for constant interest and harmony throughout their respective district are DYC Wilma Nesuda and her assistant, Rosemarie Banik, both of whom deserve a standing ovation for a fine job well done!

DISTRICT YOUTH LETTERS DISTRICT III YOUTH CLUB

Deas Members and Readers: June 23, was the date on which District III held its District Youth Achievement Day. Our hosting lodge was Lodge 66, at Elm Mott.

Although this was a very tiring day, many children and their parents returned home with a prize awarded to them, but many more returned home with much more than a prize -- the satisfied pleasure of competition. There is a quotable saying, "Winners never quit, and quitters never win."

We had a very successful YAD with a record-breaking number of entries. Many thanks go to the cooks of Lodge 66 for preparing such a wonderful meal of fried chicken, sausage and all the trimmings.

The afternoon of competition was begun with the arts and crafts.

Because of so many entries, the judges had their hands full and really should be commended for the fantastic job they did. With over 300 entries you can just imagine the difficulty they encountered.

While the crafts were being judged, the talent competition was in full swing. All the hours of practice that went into each entry really paid off and shone through.

Each entry deserved a prize, and although they weren't given one, there were and are no losers.

For the close of the day and the highlight of all competition, the Royalty presentation was then made. There was a total of 8 queen contestants and 3 young men running for the title of king. This was the most exciting part of the day for me, because I was among the 8 competing for the crown. After all the speeches and the judging was completed the awards were given to the recipients. Then came the time to crown the queen and king

18 of District III. I am truly very honored to represent District III as their queen. It was a very close contest and I hope I can fill my position accordingly.

The king is Randy Pavel.ka and I wish to extend my congratulations to him. Randy and I are both from Lodge 35, Elk. We are honored to be the first in Elk's history to be named the District III King and Queen.

June 21st, the youth club held a skating party and everyone had a great time.

vlsrNIK LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Members, Friends, and Readers, On Sunday, June 23, the District II youth clubs went skating at Skate Haven in Temple, from 4:15 to 6:15. Everyone had a very fun afternoon. Afterward, the youth went to Ferguson Park and had sandwiches, cookies, chips and sada pop.

At YAD, two teens of our lodge, Cindy Mandak and Randy Olson, our lodge queen and king, tied for District III Royalty. We were proud -f their efforts.

Cur junior group talent act won 1st place. We did Sesame Street.

Our senior group talent act was not so lucky, although they won 3rd pla-e. They sang, "I'm On The of The World."

We also had a Beseda, circle which will go to state YAD. There were many winners from our lodge. Congratulations to all.

We discussed YAD and craft cards were handed out to those who wanted to make crafts. For group talent you must make 90 per cent of the practices to participate.

The birthdays for June were Diane Dluhos, Russell Zboril, Shelly Krpec, Patrick Krutilek, and Chris Hajovsky. They were presented a gift and a cake. We then sang "Cukoo, Let the Sunshine In," and "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean."

The junior and senior groups then had practice for YAD talent.

After that, everyone had refreshments of cake, soda, candy, and ice cream.

Dear Readers, We held our usual meeting on June 23. The meeting was called to order by Terry Carniahan. We had the pledge of allegiance and then we heard the minutes read by Barbara Carnahan. They were then approved.

Chad Lawrence gave the treasurer's report. There was no old business, so we discussed having Barbara's birthday party. It will be held on July the 21st. The party will take place at the Ptacek's home. I would like everyone in the lodge to be present.

Then after the new •business, we filled out camp forms and the point sheets and the meeting was adjourned.

The boys had a dart game; Chad Lawrence won.

Before the meeting, we had a swimming party.

Sure hope to see you all at camp in July.

Dear Members, The Talton youth club held their monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 25th, at the Taiton Community Center.

The meeting was called to order by our new president, Mary Jo Dluhos. The pledge was led by Marjorie Treumer and the prayer was led by Donna Blaha.

Karen Dorotik then gave a report on Camp. Mrs. Krutilek reminded us about turning in our forms for YAD. We then sang four songs that we learned at camp.

There were twenty-one members present and eight mothers. Special guests were Karen Dorotik, Tina Howard and Kelly Korenek.

The birthday celebrants for the imonth of June were Chris H•jovsky, Patrick Krutilek, Diane Dluhos, Russell Zboril, and Shelley Krpec; they were presented with a cake and a present from the youth club.

After the meeting adjourned, refreshments of cake, chips, ice cream and soda pop were served.

LODGE NO. 3% BRYAN Dear Members and Readers, I have written many Vestnik letters on different sub jects con -ce:,Ingthisourythclubas one. This time I am going to try something different and write on ,pecial subject.

The youth club is a help to the mother lodge because I feel that if there wasn't a youth club there would not be an adult club such as a mother lodge, either. The way I cee it, the youth club is a big help to the mother lodge because when a youth grows older and into adulthood, he is trained by his having been in the youth club.

The young person will have had a chance to be trained in leadership by holding one of the many SPJST offices; therefore, when problems of some kind may arise in the mother lodge he will have the ability to know just what to do. The young person is also taught how to get along with other people — young and old alike. The youth ts shown much enjoyment. By learning all these responsibilities, the youth club is a help to the mother lodge.

LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Members, This was the first time in my life in the SPJST to enter small things in arts and craft at district YAD. We had a lot of entries from our lodge and they were all pretty.

I want to congratulate Dolores Halerl who won in talent and her brother, Tim Haberl whose pretty dia.wing is also going to the state contest.

The YAD was a long day for some people, but to me, it was a, lot of fun because I knew so many boys and girls.

I attended Miss Debbie Scott and Mr. Larry Marak's wedding on June 22, in West. Miss Scott was a, member of the FTA at West High School last year; she used to come to our school while I was in 1st grade, and play indoor and outdoor games with us. I like her very much.

The youth club and our leaders are going to KWTX Radio-TV (one of the largest stations in this part of TeXas) in Waco on July 15, and to Six Flags on July 22.

ALFRED JOHN SVADLENAK DIES IN HOUSTON Alfred John Svadlenak, 61, of Houston, died Saturday, May 25, after a short illness.

Funeral was held Monday, May 27, at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Chapel in Houston. The Rev. Gene Vickery officiated. Burial was in the Interment Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.

Mr. Svadlenaik was a native and former resident of Taylor and a Houston resident for 32 years.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, SPJ IST in Taylor, and was employed as an office manager for Stroud Sales Co., in Houston.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Alfred Svadlenak of Houston; a sister, Mrs. Max (Eileen) Skelton of Temple; two brothers, William T. SvacIlenak of Houston and Stanfield Svadlenak of Taylor, and several nieces and nephews.

SPJSTRESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY Sister Angela Zrubek, age 55 years, passed away in the Johns Community Hospital in Taylor on Tuesday morning, June 18th, 1974.

Sister Zrubek, the wife of the mayor of Granger, was born in Granger on October 3rd, 1918. She Was a member of the SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, the KJZT and Lodge Kolnensky No. 20 in Granger. She was also a member of the Altar Society of her church.

Surviving are her husband, Arnold T. Zrubek of Granger; a daughter, Mrs. David (Janet) Borg

Funeral services were held at 9:45 a.m. Thursday from the family home, followed by services at the SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with the Rev. George Tydlacka officiating. Entombment was in Holy Cross Mausoleum in Granger.

First St., Wharton, who passed away at Gulf Coast Medical Center on Monday, June 17, 1974 at the age of years. He had been ill a long time.

Brother Smolik was born to Johanna (Janca) and Isidor Smolik in Lavaca County, Texas, on October 5, 1904. He moved to Wharton in 1943 and was employed as a mechanic at Wharton Tractor Company until his retirement after which he was manager of Zahn's Gulf Station in Wharton.

Brother Smolik is survived by his wife, Agnes, and three daughters, Janie Owens, Margaret Prihoda, and Agnes Stern, all of Wharton.

Also surviving is a son, Isidor Smolik of Wharton, and twelve grandchildren.

Brother Smolik was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and took great interest in all the activities of his family. Two of his hobbies were fishing and caring for his vegetable garden.
