After a stop-start couple of years, Variety Theatre Ashburton are so happy to finally be bringing their long-awaited production of BORN FREE THE OSCAR WINNERS to the stage.

Under the guidance of talented Musical Director Kathi Craig, Assistant Musical Director Malcolm Hopwood and Choreographer Jessie Thomson, this is a show that promises to make our hearts sing once more.

“We have been starved for music and theatre, but that ends with Born Free. It’s a marvellous show,” Kathi says. “It’s different. There are not a lot of props but don’t let that put you off. The Braided Rivers Community Trust Event Centre is a fabulous venue, and it will be transformed into a glamourous Hollywood venue for the show. Add in the fabulous wardrobe, amazing sound and lighting, superb choreography and of course the outstanding talent of the singers and dancers, and this production will take your breath away.”

The show, featuring the very best of the Oscar winners, runners-up and soundtracks, includes titles such as Can You Feel The Love Tonight from The Lion King; As Time Goes By from Casablanca; Born Free (from the movie of the same name); My Heart Will Go On, from Titanic; Let It Go from Frozen and many more.

re
Celebrating 90 years of the Academy Awards with Variety Theatre, Ashburton. Born Free HAVE YOU GOT YOUR TICKETS TO THE OSCAR WINNERS? 26 - 29 MAY

Sometimes, it’s not until something is taken away from you that you realise how much you miss it. Over the last however long (I don’t want to think about it too hard) there are a number of things that I’ve really missed, firstly, visiting family and enjoying our wee grandsons growing up. Video calls are great, you can’t get a big hug on a video call. I’ve also missed going out for entertainment. I don’t think we’ve always appreciated the fantastic shows and events we’ve had available to us in Ashburton, but I’m happy to have a small What’s On section in this issue again, and I’ll be first in the queue for tickets from now on!

Speaking of entertainment and local talent, what a line-up there is in the Variety Theatre’s performance of Born Free: The Oscar Winners. I’ve had a sneak peek, and I’m excited! We have a wee group of friends going and I for one can’t wait to get a bit dressed up, order a wine and enjoy the show!

This month we celebrate Mother’s Day, so check out our Favourite Things for some great gift ideas, there’s new season fashion too, plenty of great local shopping, prize draws and reading.

Find yourself a sunny spot, grab a coffee, put your feet up and enjoy!

CROSSING THE SOUTHERN ALPS ON A SCOOTER

Three women, three 50cc scooters and a mountain range. Doesn’t sound TOO intimidating, I hear you say. You may be right, but a lot depends on the determination of the women, the reliability of the scooters and what the mountain might throw at them on the day!

Words: Judy McAuliffe Image: Jan Finlayson

Geraldine locals Karen Pace, Sue Stewart and Kirsten Hayes had all registered to ride The Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari, an endurance ride from Mcleans Island Road, Christchurch, and finishing at the Beachfront Hotel Hokitika. All three women have different stories of how cancerhasimpacted on theirlives. All three wanted to do something with real impact, to give back to the Cancer Society and The Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari, scheduled for 21 May, seemed like the answer.

“It’s a win-win,” they say. “The Cancer Society depends on fundraising to allow them to do the amazing work that they do. So many events have been cancelled over the last couple of years so this is really important to them, and it’s going to be amazing forus as well. We’ll be doing something forothers and having a ball at the same time. It’s going to be epic!”

TheScooterSafariisagruellingjourney,travelling250km through freezing temperatures - on a townie’s scooter! It's not for the faint hearted. Their website says the event is “designed to be the coldest, longest, hardest, most gruelling and uncomfortable test of endurance on a city scooter, but is nothing in comparison to the challenges people face in their cancer journey.”

Despite all three riders having limited experience of motorcycling (unlessyoucountzipping aboutRarotonga and a trip to Fairlie for a pie!) Karen, Sue and Kirsten are all up for the massive challenge ahead of them.

“We’re in this, boots and all. No back-up riders - we’re going the distance. Cancer sufferers have no choice and we’re not giving ourselves an easy time of it either. We’re all first timers to the Safari, so it’s exciting and intimidating all at the same time. It’s a massive undertaking for all of us.”

In previous Safaris, many of the riders have dressed up, decorated their scooters, gone all out, but the Geraldine trio are still to finalise their ‘look.’ “We’ve trialled a few ideas, but nothing definite yet. We’re open to sponsorship though. If any business would like us to fly the flag for them, we’re happy to do some branding. We’d welcome their involvement, and they’ll certainly get great exposure in an event as big as this.”

All of the women have far exceeded the minimum $250 donation required for start-line eligibility but are keen to raise as much as they possibly can. To donate to any, or all of the women’s Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari

Challenges, go to scootersafari.co.nz and search for them by name. To sponsor the women collectively or individually, contact Karen on 027 747 0732, Sue on 021 162 3495 or Kirsten on 027 308 3272

The trio say they’re under no illusions about what to expect on the day. “We’re expecting the worst weather wise, and anything better will be a bonus. On a good day it can be a stunning road to travel, but at this time of year, we’re just as likely to encounter rain, hail, wind and even snow, along with sore bums, aching arms and mechanical issues. It’s not called an endurance ride for nothing!”

“We are doing this to show our support and awareness for those who have passed, and for those living with cancer and the challenges they face – whatever it brings, the Safari will be nothing compared to that.”

Sincethefirsteventin2009, ScooterSafarishaveraised over $1.4 million dollars for the cause. All of the funds raised as part of Scooter Safari 2022 will go directly to the Cancer Society. In case of postponement, a back up date of 10th September 2022 is in place.

tomatoes Too many

At this time of year tomatoes are abundant and so full of flavour!

If you grow your own tomatoes, chances are you’ve had a bumper crop. So, what do you do with the excess?

There’s nothing nicer than freshly sliced tomatoes on toast for breakfast, tomato slices inasaladorfresh, home-madetomato salsa, butonceyou’vehadyourfill, sharedsome of the excess with your friends and neighbours, what do you do with the remainder?

FROZEN TOMATOES can be frozen raw or cooked, whole, sliced, chopped, or puréed, and they don’t need to be blanched first. Frozen tomatoes are best used in cooked foods such as soups, sauces, pasta dishes and casseroles as they get a bit mushy when they're thawed.

To freeze, simply wash and dry them, cut in half, remove the cores and place on a baking tray skin side down. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze. Once frozen, place in a single layer in freezer bags and job done!

TOMATO RELISH is another kiwi fav. We love Annabel Langbein’s recipe which is easy to make, seriously tasty, and doesn’t require the tomatoes to be peeled. The good thing about this relish is that it has so many uses.

Of course, it makes a great addition to a meat sandwich or served with a piping hot sausage roll, but its also a tasty base for a home-made pizza, as a replacement for salsa on nachos, on a cheese platter, and ifyou’re making scones, just add a fewtablespoons of relish to the recipe to oomph up the flavour!

REMEMBER: tomatoes should be stored at room temperature, not in the fridge, so they retain their texture and flavour.

There’s no such thing!

Black Pepper and Sumac Strawberries

Enliven early-season strawberries (or ones from your garden that aren’t as you’d like) with this delicious syrup, which can be made in advance and stored in the fridge.

Ingredients

1 cup caster sugar

1 cup hot water

2 Tbsp sumac

5 good grinds black pepper (about 1 tsp)

250 - 350g strawberries, hulled

1 cup creme fraiche

2 Tbsp honey

Directions

time 10 minutes, plus steeping time Cook time 7 minutes

Put the sugar and water in a small pot set over a medium heat. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, then add the sumac and black pepper. Simmer gently for 5 minutes, then remove from the heat. Cool, then strain through a fine sieve.

If the strawberries are large, halve or quarter them and add to the syrup. If you’re using smaller berries, prick them with a skewer or fork before adding them to the syrup. Cover and let steep for at least 2 hours at room temperature, or in the fridge overnight.

Just before serving, stir the crème fraîche and honey together. Divide the berries between four plates or bowls. Dollop on some crème fraîche and pour over a generous slosh of the syrup.

CREATING A

safer community

The saying, “From a small acorn a mighty oak tree grows,” is heard often and is particularly apt to Safer Mid Canterbury. This organisation had a modest beginning but, just like an oak tree, has branched out in many directions; its scope and reach touching the lives of many within our community. I chatted recently with Jenny Rae, a Senior Youth Worker, to learn more about the services they provide.

“Safer Mid Canterbury started a long time ago as a community council that was set up to address some of the safer needs in the district. However, it has morphed into quite a large social services agency and the sectors we cover are now quite diverse,” Jenny says. “For us, it is all about meeting the needs of the community.”

It is evident that the power of Safer Mid Canterbury is in large measure due to its dedicated and compassionate staff. Kevin Clifford, in his role as General Manager, has guided the growth of Safer Mid Canterbury for over 15 years. “We are really fortunate to have such a wonderful GM who is so supportive of what we do and suggest,” says Jenny.

ThesheerbreadthandscopeoftheworkundertakenatSafer Mid Canterbury is incredible. Restorative Justice covers not only Ashburton, but also Timaru and Oamaru; other services include the Youth Health Clinic, Neighbourhood Support, Lives Worth Living, S.E.E.Ds (sharing every day experiences and drawing on skills), CACTUS (an adventurebased programme for 10-14 year olds), Community Youth Programme, Supported Bail, Court Contact Service, Migrant Support Service, Safe Communities, Families without

Violence Network, Community Connector and Refugee Settlement Support, to name just a few. Funding comes from the community and the Government.

While the range of services available to the community is impressive, the tangible difference these programmes make in people’s lives is profound. For instance, the Rural Drivers Licensing Scheme has enabled rural-based migrant women to learn to drive, removing a barrier that often created isolation and providing independence and integration into the local community.

The family is a huge focus for Safer Mid Canterbury. Whether it be through the S.E.E.Ds programme, which utilises the experience of Mums and Grandmothers to mentor young Mums and Dads in the community, or early intervention to help families navigate the services available in the system to address family violence, feelings of isolation, or even support during the Covid-19 pandemic, Safer Mid Canterburydetermine needsand connect people to services that can assist and help them.

Jenny is very passionate about her role at Safer Mid Canterbury. “I guess I am one of those people who likes to

help others and I know that when people are going through a hard time, it can be really overwhelming and hard to see a plan going forward, so the greatest reward I get from myrole is helping people to set a goal, make a plan and assist them through it. That’s when you really see the change. Together we are safer.”

ASK DAVID

You feel tired, overwhelmed, anxious, unsexy and often just plain cranky - life is not fun anymore?

Share your concerns and benefit from David’s extensive knowledge of health and wellness.

In my book, I identify 13 pancakes that are affecting your health. Pancake 3 is - Issues with a stuttering thyroid, which come from the impacts of toxins, stress and mineral deficiencies.

Understanding your thyroid is crucial to your health, body shape, and how you feel because it affects EVERY cell in your body.

Thyroid hormone is like your body's accelerator pedal, so if your thyroid is sluggish, then you feel tired (even depressed), everything is hard work, and you have a strong tendency to gain weight. ***

An underactive thyroid is one of the most unrecognized health problems globally, mainly because the standard TSH test by itself doesn't do a great job of diagnosing the problem.

If you think you may have a thyroid function problem, then the very first thing after waking, you should check your temperature with an accurate thermometer. Place your thermometer under your armpit for 10 minutes. If your average for three days is outside the temperature range 36.6 – 36.8 oC, you likely have a thyroid issue that needs to be checked out (or some form of infection).

You should understand that how you feel and your symptoms, matter more than any other factor or test result. Symptoms are your body trying to tell you that something is not right.

WHERE CLASS MEETS FLAIR

It was a different age. An age when class and style mattered; where opulence was often more important than functionality and travel was about the experience, not the destination. A time when a car wasn’t designed just to get you from A to B, it was designed to make a statement and to be admired. I was recently swept up in this glamorous era while visiting the Ashburton Vintage Car Club Motor Museum, where I chatted with Club Secretary, Colin Sweetman.

Words and images: Leanne Gichard

The Museum was opened in 1979 by the late Rob Talbot (former MP), a proud moment for members of the Ashburton Vintage Car Club, who had worked hard to fundraise the amount needed to build this wonderful asset. Those fundraising efforts included the raffling of two restored vehicles, a 1928 Dodge 6 Sedan and a 1929 Dodge DA, which proved to be a huge success.

Wandering around, I am stunned by the quality of the cars on display and the array of motorcycles, vintage signs, spark plug collection, photos and memorabilia; some evoking very powerful memories; some before my time. The vintage petrol bowsers are fascinating and do not resemble those we use today. “Back in the day you visited a service station and drove up to whatever bowser was advertising the type of fuel you wished to purchase, like Shell, Europa, Atlantic etc., unlike today where only one brand of petrol is sold at each service station,” Colin explains. “Over time these brands got swallowed up by other petrol companies or re-branded, such as Shell becoming Z.”

All the cars on display are in immaculate condition and boast many different features unseen today, such as the dickey seat. These seats are hidden from view in the boot area and unfolded by lifting up the boot lid when required. They were well-upholstered and often used for

seating children (and I am told occasionally Mother-inLaws)! The dickey seats had downsides and upsides; the upside being that they were isolated from the interior seats (which I am sure many siblings were rather pleased about), the downside being they were exposed to the elements. I can imagine the exhilaration of the wind in their hair, and singing their heart out without a care –of course these days such a feature would cause those monitoringhealthandsafetytohaveaconniption!Didn’t our forefathers live dangerously? And they survived! Sumptuous interiors and attention to detail, such as the quality of the badging, wheels and handles really make modern day vehicles look ratherordinary in comparison.

All vehicles on display belong to Ashburton Vintage Car Club members and change from time to time. There are usually around 35 cars and motorcycles on display. The range is extensive, from veteran to vintage and classics – even a replica hearse! A parts shed is also available to visit – you might just find that part you have been searching for.

The Museum is situated at 86 Maronan Road, Tinwald, Ashburton, and is open on Saturdays, 10am – 12pm, or by request. The admission fee is $5.00 per adult, with free entry for children of school age (cash only – no eftpos available on-site).

Every month we recognise an Unsung Hero

Our region is full of wonderful people who are dedicated to helping others in the community.

They devote their free time to help with everything from grassroots sports to visiting the sick and elderly, working in non-profit organisations such as animal shelters, food banks, Cancer Society, Girl Guides – there are so many clubs and organisations that simply could not function without them.

If you know someone who deserves recognition, let us know so we can celebrate the significant contribution they make to the community. Thanks to Ray White Mid Canterbury we’ll also reward them with a Prezzie Card - a token of appreciation for all they do.

THIS MONTH’S UNSUNG HERO NEROLI CROSS

Neroli has been nominated for the dedication, energy and enthusiasm she puts into the many different roles she fills with numerous different volunteer organisations.

“Neroli puts so much time and effort into everything she does, she is so caring and generous with her time and sharing her skills.”

The list of organisations Neroli supports are too many to list, but one that she gets enormous satisfaction from is Mid Canterbury Plunket. As the Clothing Exchange Coordinator, she spends several hours a week sorting donated items for new-borns through to 5-year-olds. These are available free from the Plunket rooms.

For the Rural Drivers Licensing Scheme run by Safer Mid Canterbury, Neroli drives out of town and collects learner drivers, taking them to their theory lessons in Ashburton. While they study, she looks after any pre-schoolers of those attending, and then she drives the learner back home. This gives

newcomers and migrant women the skills to drive to school and the supermarket and gain confidence and independence.

One a week Neroli becomes a St Johns Caring Caller, providing a listening ear for someone who might not otherwise have any personal contact.

Every Saturday she voices the local news for the Timaru Herald so that people with low vision can access their local news: she volunteers for Hospice Mid Canterbury, helping out wherever she can; she has been the Staveley Camp Booking Coordinator for the last 13 years, and is reader-writer, supporting students at both Ashburton College and Mt Hutt College.

Neroli counts herself lucky. She is grateful she has the time, and says she loves to help where I know it will make difference.

THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD MOTHERS

EVERY MOTHER HAS A BAD DAY

'We have your daughter' Frida Liu is a struggling mother. She remembers taking Harriet from her cot and changing her nappy. She remembers giving her a morning bottle. They'd been up since four am. Frida just had to finish the article in front of her. But she'd left a file on her desk at work. What would happen if she retrieved it and came back in an hour? She was so sure it would be okay. Now, the state has decided that Frida is not fit to care for her daughter.

The School for Good Mothers is an explosive and thrilling novel about love and the pressures of perfectionism, parenthood and privilege. GREAT READ!!!
