“One of the ways we at CTS, and I know that a lot of leading consultancies do as well, is to write within the reverse brief a “day in the life story board” using various fictional personas within the business emphasising their interaction with technology and highlighting the removal of what I like to call any speed humps to them working efficiently with the least amount of stress as possible.”

FIRST WORDS

There’s no dispute in the fact that the advent of the 2020’s has coerced a rather rapid and dynamic evolution within the corporate landscape. As the corporate world continues to evolve dynamically, and companies continue to focus on creating increasingly innovative and productive modern workspaces replete with state-of-the-art capabilities; one does run a very likely risk of going overboard with the inclusion of technology. In our Feature column, we chat with Andrew Calov – lead consultant at CTS –as we gather key insights into acquiring and integrating workspaces with efficient and high-performance professional AV systems, without going overboard.

Wesco Anixter: A Century of Ingenuity of Acquisitions and Expertise

Size does matter. More so in business, and, particularly so when an organization charts a very ambitious growth path. While there are companies galore worldwide that fit this rhetoric, a few justify it in real terms. Wesco Anixter is one. Perhaps, one of the few companies characterizing growth by ingenuity of acquisitions and expertise, Wesco Anixter has been an inspirational story for corporate success.

Coinciding with ISE this year – even as it celebrated the glory of 100 years of business success – the Pittsburgh-headquartered business presented to the industry its new unified ‘avatar’ that has so much more exciting script inside.

Ram Bhavanashi of SI Asia interacted with Don Snowden, SVP & GM, Communications & Security Solutions, Wesco Anixter, on the occasion to know what the ‘new AV major’ is all about.

SI Asia: We reckon Wesco as a 100-year-old company, with its genesis being in core electrical devices supply. Could you tell us about the evolution since then into a multi-segment distribution leader?

DON: Yes, it’s a tremendous accomplishment. Wesco’s legacy and history has been in core electrical.

MAY 2023 6 WWW. SYSTEMSINTEGRATION ASIA.COM INTERVIEW
Don Snowden SVP & GM, Communications & Security Solutions, Wesco Anixter

A Century of Ingenuity with acquisitions and expertise: With 20,000 employees, trading nearly 1.5 million products through 45,000 suppliers, reaching out to customers in over 50 countries, generating $ 21.4 billion net sales, Wesco’s global footprint is both a statement and testament.

Beginning from there, it has grown significantly through acquisitions, and over time, it has expanded its portfolio vastly.

We have three very significant business units: utility and broadband solutions, electrical and electronic solutions, and communications and security solutions. Together, the three business units have significant market coverage for the majority of end-customer verticals. From large utility service providers to electrical solutions in the industrial and construction markets. The business I represent, communications and security solutions, covers copper and fibre optic network infrastructure, professional audio video (pro AV) and security solutions, in addition to many more technologies spanning all elements associated with the business.

SI Asia: What prompted the move? How does it fit into and contribute to the philosophy of the unified enterprise?

DON: From a master brand standpoint, the move resulted from the integration of the merger of two equals between Wesco and Anixter that closed in June 2020. When we think about Wesco’s core electrical business, Anixter also had utility and broadband solutions and smaller electrical solutions segment. Anixter was primarily a communications and security solutions business that included a significant international footprint.

So, the merger with the Anixter organization drives a very significant international business for the combined company, in APAC, EMEA and CALA as

Wesco Anixter. As we re-branded the combined organization, we wanted to embrace the strength of the Anixter organization. This is why in the international markets we have proceeded as Wesco Anixter, retaining the strength of both organizations and celebrating the power of the Anixter brand.

SI Asia: What additional value-add does the initiative bring to the company, and to the markets worldwide?

DON: One of the most significant value-adds is the international footprint that Anixter brought to the organization. In addition to the footprint in Anixter’s trading areas, it has significant service components. This includes complex services and supply chain programs that help our end-customers and more services that bring efficiencies to our contractor and integrator partners. As an example, we design, build, rack and stack complex services through our integration partners.

Along with that international footprint, we’re really accentuating Anixter’s core value proposition which was being able to work with large global multinational corporations and helping them maintain a consistent specification all throughout the world.

So, when an enterprise has multiple locations across the world, whether it is their utility and broadband infrastructure, or communication and security infrastructure, or the core electrical infrastructure, they want to have consistent metrics and solutions and specifications around the world. This was – and continues to be – a tremendous strength of legacy Anixter.

MAY 2023 7 WWW. SYSTEMSINTEGRATION ASIA.COM
INTERVIEW

SI Asia: In 2020, Wesco acquired Anixter, and in 2022, followed it up with Rahi Systems. How do they complement each other?

DON: That’s a great question. Rahi is a very diverse business, spanning network and data centre infrastructure, all the way across the spectrum to AV. What the Rahi value proposition brings is being able to take those AV solutions to very large multinational corporations, and allow them to carry consistent standards of specification all across the world.

While Wesco has done that through supply chain and logistics capabilities, Anixter too has done it through the same competence – in addition to complex services. We always want to work and partner with our contractor and integration partners. From an AV perspective, Rahi has given us the ability to maintain consistent specification around the world, and they are now benefiting from the supply chain and logistics capabilities of the combined Wesco Anixter business.

SI Asia: How formidable force is the new company in comparison with other MNCs operating in similar space?

DON: When we think about the business, we always have the customer at the centre of it. It’s a real focus on customer segmentation, and the value that we would bring to that customer. When we work across the world, the services that we can apply to that customer just got that much stronger with Rahi. From the perspective of the end-user customer – whether it is a very large global company or a small local entity – the value just got that much stronger. We help them collapse their supply chains and procure more from fewer companies. And in the international markets, we help them mitigate significant risks. Because of our size and scale, financial strength and stability, these companies can operate with absolute trust; they know

we can help bring the right solution, the right suppliers, manufacturers, and the most qualified contractors and integration partners that fulfil the installation. That’s truly the way we have a “customer first” perspective, and what we can deliver to that value chain.

SI Asia: With the scare of COVID variants continuing to bother the new normal world, how do you look at the world of AV panning out in the coming times.?

DON: We have been living in this world for some time now, communicating with people through technology, and even now doing this interview via technology. We’ve also seen different elements of AV coming into our lives. Now, as we return to office, it’s become that much more important. Businesses need to upgrade their network infrastructure to handle the bandwidth requirement.

Many of our global customers, as they return to their offices, are having bandwidth issues. When you have dozens of people back in the office facility, and they all are conducting Teams or Zoom meetings at the same time, it can be problematic.

We have developed, through the Anixter organization, a programme called Utility Grade Infrastructure (UTG). This supports the need of the network infrastructure and ensures that businesses can have bandwidth capabilities that exceed even normal standards.

When we look at all of the sub-systems within a facility, we are also starting to think about bringing all those disparate systems together, and collecting critical data from the system, from the IoT perspective. When you look at a commercial building, you’ve got the security, AV, network infrastructure, electronic locking systems, and card access on the door, climate control and more. They all come together and play a very critical role, starting with ingress and egress facility

INTERVIEW

at the door. For example, you come in and have the security surveillance, you have the lighting solutions tracking occupancy, and then you have the highly specialized and quickly evolving AV solutions. They are bringing in a rich work environment. All those things are now working together, and we are focused on helping customers aggregate that data to make good business decisions.

So, we do not look at AV as singular standalone unit. We want to make sure that we are helping customers integrate AV in every aspect of their overall building network infrastructure. We think that can continue to rapidly evolve.

SI Asia: Do you see the emerging need for enhanced network infra, IOT, and hybrid offices- all coming together to create a new business case altogether?

DON: Absolutely. It’s a tremendous opportunity for end customers, contractors and integrators too. Look at what it takes to operate a facility in this new environment, where we haven’t changed the way we positioned the workstations; for example, huddle rooms vs. boardrooms vs. conference rooms. Everything must be not only designed specifically for the space and the use case, but we have tremendous consideration into the bandwidth and the power needs for that facility. Like I said earlier, the audio capability, the video capability, the lighting solutions, access and more – all the systems need to work in unison. We think there is a big opportunity to develop systems that aggregate that data.

In order to put all these things together, you need to have an incredibly robust infrastructure.

DON: Rahi Systems, our recent acquisition, brought tremendous expansion to our footprint. Even from the Wesco Anixter perspective, over the last few years during the pandemic, we have been focusing with our customers on where they are going to expand.

For example, Vietnam – where Wesco Anixter was focused on expanding our footprint to – Rahi Systems is already there. This gives us that immediate expansion, workforce and sales organization. Another example is South Korea. We had the ability to operate in that environment, but we did not have everything in place that support our customers and suppliers on the ground. Rahi brought that strength to us immediately. For many things that we wanted to do to expand our footprint on global scale, Rahi brought it to scale. We are very much invested in – and fully committed to –continued growth all around the world.

SI Asia: What is your view of the AV domain in APAC in comparison with the West?

DON: It really depends on how we break down the customer segments. To take a quick look at it, we see the growth and expansion opportunity to be quite significant in the APAC region, largely because of the position that we held there previously. We had not in a broad fashion been providing AV solutions to a broad group of end-customers, contractors and integrators. There have been pockets that we have been stronger than others like India, Australia and New Zealand. But as we move forward, with our enhanced capabilities with the integration of Rahi Systems, we see ourselves providing significantly expanded value proposition to our customers in the region.

SI Asia: Where does Wesco intends to position in the emerging global world?

When we look at the markets we operate around the globe, we see significant expansion opportunities happening within the APAC region.

INTERVIEW

• Develop new and existing relationships.

How is technology changing the attractions industry or the experience?

• Opportunity to conduct business with qualified industry buyers and trade visitors.

• A series of sponsorship and branding avenues to maximize your brand exposure.

• Create strong connect with Pro AV community.

• Demonstrate or sell your products in a live environment. It’s a chance for them to touch, feel, see and play with technology.

Technology continues to be one of the most important elements of our industry and the guest experience. I think the changes are for the better and allows us to have obtain more information on guest patterns, manage operational needs, and learn the behavior of everyone we interact with from around the world.

• Gather market intelligence and stay ahead of your competition.

SI Asia chats with June Ko, executive director and vice president, IAAPA Asia Pacific operations about growth opportunities and embracing of technologies.

What is the status of the Theme Park and attractions industry in APAC? Is it growing? maybe trends can be shared? where are the opportunities?

India is a strong market with a huge population that will surpass China soon. The growing middle class and surrounding countries have expanded opportunities for growth in this location. We see countries in Asia Pacific that are very diverse in culture and language, which can be an exciting opportunity for us. If we better understand that needs of each location through the use of data and technology, we will be more equipped to create the growth that is awaiting our industry.

What lessons can the attraction industry learn from COVID-19 so as to be better prepared?

One of the biggest lessons learned, in my opinion, is that we truly are in this together. One of the strongest parts of IAAPA is our global reach and how we can learn from each other when we get candid in our conversations and honest about our struggles. Navigating COVID-19 together means we have directly faced our weakest operation points together and are beginning to see the other side of those.

With the increasing diversification and personalization of the cultural and tourism market, as well as the application of new products and technologies in consumer scenarios, do you think that technologies like artificial intelligence and big data will bring new changes to the cultural and tourism, and theme entertainment industries?

I think the industry has always relied on data to help shape its future and growth plans. However, I think we’re going to see an even greater shift into artificial intelligence as it positively enhances the space we work in without adding too much in terms of human capital and staffing needs. The pandemic showed there’s room for more technology in our industry and we’ve already seen the beginning of that growth.

Why should one attend IAAPA Asia Expo?

IAAPA Expo Asia is a one-stop event to meet likeminded industry leaders, learn the latest innovations planned for the attractions industry, and hear from seasoned veterans in a way you would not be able to in any other environment. The IAAPA team has curated the latest topics of industry, designed behind-thescenes opportunities, and built a program designed to improve your operations and expand your skill set. You cannot find anything like this experience elsewhere in our region.

Reno Studios Brings Client Stories to Life with BromptonPowered Virtual Production Movie Studio

TAIWAN: With offices in Taiwan and Australia, the award-winning production house for film and television Reno Studios, has created Taiwan’s finest pixel pitch virtual production facility. Opened at the end of last year, it is located at the longest-running Taiwanese movie studio, Central Motion Picture Corporation (CMPC).

Helping bring clients’ stories to the screen is Brompton Technology LED processing, which delivers exceptional image quality and colour accuracy, creating the most ‘close-to-reality’ environment, seamlessly blending live and digital content.

“In collaboration with partners, Reno Studios provides a one-stop service for international shooting projects, with access to essential services such as scenery construction, camera rental, lighting post-production

and sound processing,” said Peter Huang, GM of Reno Studios.

Huang acknowledged that image quality was one of the most important elements for virtual production, with LED panels and LED processors fundamentally determining whether image detail can be reproduced vividly on the LED wall. As a result, the team chose LED solutions from LED panel manufacturer, AUO Corporation, which has over 26 years of experience in R&D and production of display technology, and industry gold standard Brompton Tessera SX40 4K LED processors to power the giant LED volume.

“Brompton is a leader in LED processing,” Huang opined. “Its Tessera software features such as Puretone, ThermaCal, Frame Remapping, ShutterSync®, Extended Bit Depth, and Stacking, enable film directors to freely create any type of content and not be limited artistically. Additionally, the Tessera processors’ colour accuracy and smooth image display create the most ‘close-to-reality’ environment possible, where actors can interact with the LED wall, the two blending seamlessly together.”

The studio’s curved LED volume comprises AUO Pitch 1.95 LED panels measuring 12 m wide by five m high, which support at least 99% DCI-P3 colour space. The main wall is three groups of LED panels (left, middle, right), with each group controlled by one Tessera SX40 4K LED processor and three Tessera XD 10G data distribution units. “As well as the SX40 processors and XD distribution units controlling the main wall, there is a Tessera SX40 and an XD unit for the ceiling,” noted Huang. Speaking about additional benefits that Brompton offers to Reno Studio’s FX team, Huang explained how Tessera processors free images from colour variations or screen tearing caused by video latency, so the scene model and animation special effects can be presented beautifully and correctly.

MAY 2023 24 WWW. SYSTEMSINTEGRATION ASIA.COM NEWS

“This makes the whole shooting process seem much smoother and more hassle-free,” he said. Additionally, all the LED panels were dynamically calibrated with Brompton’s Hydra advanced measurement system, making them Brompton HDR-ready and unlocking the full potential of the LEDs.

“LED virtual production is still a new technology and is advancing continuously. It’s also a new trend in the film and television industry,” Huang shared. “Based on Reno Studio’s experience and expertise in video production, we can strike new sparks in the industry and create infinite possibilities in Taiwan and beyond. We are thrilled about all the creative possibilities virtual production technology can offer our clients, and with

partners like Brompton Technology on board with us, we are confident we can turn any idea or story into reality!”

FOREVER Sounds Like Paradise with KV2 Audio

CHINA: A spectacular opening night heralded the launch of the FOREVER Club in Wuhan, China’s biggest nightclub project in 2022. Situated in the Xintiandi business district of Wuhan, FOREVER uses fashion, art and music to create a new entertainment landmark. In keeping with the rest of the ultra-high-class décor and astonishing ceiling creations, FOREVER has also invested in a state-of-the-art audio system, the flagship VHD5 from KV2 Audio. This marks the second VHD5 installation in a Chinese nightclub, the first being at TAXX II in Shanghai in 2021.

Financed by Chinese entertainment giant, Noah’s Ark Group, FOREVER Wuhan is a 5,000 sqm venue consisting of three main areas: the principal 2000-capacity ‘House Style’ hall, a smaller ‘HipHop’ area, and several private KTV rooms. The main hall contains some breath-taking trussing structures, sophisticated lighting and 3D effects as well as the ultra-powerful KV2 VHD5 system which was specified, designed and installed by Guangzhou Idee International Sound System Co., Ltd. (IDEE) part of KV2’s Chinese distributor AVMedia.

“As with everything else in the FOREVER club, the investors wanted a sound system that was out of the ordinary – something that would create an experience never to be forgotten,” enthused AVMedia’s Tony.

“Noah’s Ark were already familiar with KV2 as they’d previously replaced systems from other extremely well-known audio brands with KV2 in five of their other nightspots around China, as the other systems simply didn’t live up to their expectations. When I suggested the flagship VHD5 for FOREVER, they didn’t hesitate.”

Tony specified an L/R system comprising a VHD5.0 mid/hi and a VHD8.10 low/mid element per side with two VHD2.0 frontfills. 16 x ESD12 2-way full-range loudspeakers (known as TIME12 in China) act as a fill system for the numerous private booths and VIP areas, while 50 x ESD1.18 subwoofers provide powerful subbass reinforcement. 24 of the 50 subwoofers cover the 16m in front of the DJ booth, with eight subs built into the front of the booth itself and eight subs flown per side. The remaining 26 units are built into seating booths distributed across the back of the room.

Power, processing and control for the VHD systems are supplied by dedicated VHD power units, VHD5000, VHD5000S and VHD2000 respectively. Finally, a pair of powerful ESM312 monitors act as DJ monitors. Audio for the (much) smaller HipHop room – just 150 capacity – is provided by a pair of ESM312s, a pair of TIME12s and twelve ESD1.18 subs. “What never fails to impress with KV2, and in particular the VHD systems, is the ability to cover such vast areas with so few boxes, yet the clarity and precision wherever you are in the room is simply unrivalled,” shared Tony. “FOREVER aims to impress at every level – visually, aesthetically, and sonically – it is certainly right up there with TAXX II as one of the world’s superclubs. We’re very proud to be part of the FOREVER experience.”

AnM Designs and Installs A Series System for 1400-Capacity Church Hall

SOUTH KOREA: The capital of South Korea’s North Jeolla province, Jeonju - which means perfect regionis a unique hybrid of urban and rural communities and a known hub for Korean cultural and gastronomical heritage. The Jeonju Sion Church has served the local community since its founding in 1975. The church’s building, with its traditional red-brick exterior, has stood since 2012. The hall within holds a variety of worship programs ranging from speech, modern live music, choir, and orchestra.

After a decade of use, the church’s management decided it was time to make plans to upgrade its audio system. The brick-walled, 1,400-seat hall presented several acoustical challenges, including highly reflective surfaces and a deep audience configuration which meant the back rows were getting unintelligible speech. Church management sought a new system that would provide even coverage and SPL distribution

from the front to the back of the hall, and enhanced sound quality in the mid and high frequencies for speech clarity. Sion Church’s management team had a close relationship with local system integrator AnM. A regular project collaborator at the church over the past decade, AnM provided maintenance for the previous sound system. AnM reached out to local L-Acoustics partner Klausys, whom they knew had a resume of providing excellent modern audio solutions for a variety of projects. Together AnM and Klausys demonstrated an L-Acoustics A Series system for Sion’s team. Cheol Jang, technical support engineer from Klausys , relied on L-Acoustics Soundvision audio mapping software to create a design that would evenly cover the entire audience while avoiding problem areas like the reflective walls. After hearing the playback of the church’s recordings of live music and sermons, Sion’s pastor also tested the A Series system with his preferred live microphone. He was extremely pleased with the system’s pristine sound quality and was convinced that A Series was the right choice for the church upgrade.

The L/R array consists of 3 x L-Acoustics A15i Focus and one A15i Wide, topped by 1 x KS21 subwoofer per side. Using Panflex variable horizontal directivity, the Focus boxes were set to 90° to avoid reflection from the walls and to focus sound towards the back of the hall, allowing for excellent clarity of both music and speech, all the way to the back row. “While mixing live music, the church’s engineer commented that he could recognise a more natural separation of musical instruments. Orchestra musicians also praised the richer sound from the main system array,” Cheol said. With all performers hearing the pristine quality of the new audio system, the Jeonju Sion Church team and worship attendees are now blessed with an excellent balance of natural and reinforced sound for various programs throughout their weekly services.

Zytronic Contactless UI Keeps Visitors to Hong Kong’s TI Tower Safe

HONG KONG: At the North Apron of the Kai Tak Development Area, which covers the former airport site and spans the surrounding areas of Kowloon City, stands the Trade and Industry Tower (TI Tower). The building accommodates several government departments, including the Trade & Industry Department, Highways Department and Census & Statistics Department, and a community hall for local citizens to organise activities.

The 22-storey, 54,000 sqm building engineered by Arup officially opened in 2015 and received a Green Building Award for its emphasis on energy conservation during construction. The design employs various renewable energy technologies, including a photovoltaic system, and several energy-saving technologies, such as a solar hot water system, solar chimney, and daylight sun tubes.

The digital signage system within the lobby of the TI Tower uses two monitors. Mounted on the wall, the main monitor is 80” in size for easy viewing. The smaller 21” monitor, mounted on a podium beneath

the larger display, is touch-interactive to enable visitors to browse through various interesting pieces of information related to the building, such as its design, environmentally sustainable features and awards.

Keen to show the building’s green credentials to government staff and visitors more dynamically, Savills Guardian, the property and facility management company looking after the TI Tower, turned to Manuel Ling, Sales Manager, ASPIS Innovation Solutions, a long-time Zytronic partner and specialist systems integrator, for advice.

The consensus is that a building achieves ‘net zero’ operational carbon when it matches all its energy use with self-generated zero-carbon renewable energy. The daily fixed energy consumption for the TI Tower covers everything from HVAC and permanent lighting to lifts, servers, and so on. With years of experience in developing numerous Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems, in addition to the Zytronic touchscreen technology integration, ASPIS also created a software package to collect and summarise data from the overall building management system (BMS) and to present information on the renewable energy generated and the building’s operational carbon emissions.

Although ASPIS could have used the original digital signage system to showcase building information, concerns were raised that having a touch screen in a busy public area could contribute to spreading infectious diseases – a concern fuelled further by the COVID-19 pandemic. Techniques typically used to enable touch interactivity without physically touching the surface rely upon either infrared or optical-based hardware mounted around the perimeter of the display. The disadvantage of such systems is that the required bezel protrudes from the screen’s surface and, ironically, can entrap dust and dirt, making it difficult to clean.

MAY 2023 28 WWW. SYSTEMSINTEGRATION ASIA.COM NEWS

To overcome this, ASPIS replaced the original 21” touch sensor with Zytronic’s contactless touch sensor. ZyBrid hover technology uses proprietary firmware to boost the projected capacitive touch sensitivity to levels enabling user interactions to be detected up to 50mm from the screen’s surface. In addition, no unsightly and potentially unhygienic bezels are required, so the touchscreen is easy to maintain and clean.

To minimise the possibility of accidental touches as users browsed through the information displayed, ASPIS also created special graphical user interface (GUI) content, increasing the size of the icons, and introducing wider ‘guard bands’ or space around

each touch active button, ensuring an optimal user experience.

“After this digital signage system upgrade, visitors now get a better understanding of the TI Tower’s green construction design principles together with information regarding the renewable energy it generates and uses,” affirmed Manuel Ling, ASPIS.

“Using Zytronic’s innovative ZyBrid hover contactless pcap touch sensing development, ASPIS has been able to deliver a clean, low maintenance, self-service interface that works reliably, reassures users, and helps to reduce the risk of infectious diseases spreading through regularly used surfaces.”

Ahmedabad Sounds up with Ohm, British Acoustics and OSL

INDIA: As the largest city in the state of Gujarat, Ahmedabad enjoys the distinction of being a vibrant business district and rising centre of education, information technology and scientific industries; while also staying firmly rooted to its heritage of being a thriving cultural hub. The city is always bustling with activity during the day time, and continues to stay lively and energetic come sunset thanks to the residents’ penchant for food and entertainment. In fact, some reports suggest that in the past 5 years alone, the city has witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of establishments that offer a confluence of dining and entertainment options.

One such venue is Cafe Allora - a charming and cozy cafe located in the upmarket Phoenix Palladium Mall. The cafe has a warm and welcoming ambiance with comfortable seating arrangements – making it the perfect place to relax and unwind; whereas the menu offers a variety of delicious dishes, including sandwiches, pizzas, pasta, and salads. The cafe also serves a wide range of beverages, including coffee, tea, shakes, and smoothies.

With its great food, relaxing atmosphere, and friendly staff, it comes as no surprise that the Cafe Allora has quickly become one of the most visited spots in the city. And perhaps another reason that adds to the café’s magnetic allure is the enchanting soundscape, thanks to high-performance tailored sound system that combines technologies from two noted professional audio brands – Ohm and British Acoustics.

Designed and installed by Vardhaman Mega Tech (VMT) – the official representatives of both Ohm and British Acoustics in India – Ahmedabad’s Café Allora features multiple numbers of the OHM BRT-6 single 6” premium install loudspeakers strategically placed throughout the restaurant to ensure even coverage and optimal performance; with the loudspeaker system powered through the British Acoustics 2XL amplifier systems that provide ample power and control to achieve the desired sound output and quality. Furthermore, the team have installed an M10 BT 4-Channel Professional DJ Mixer with Wireless and USB Inputs from OSL that allows for seamless integration of wired and wireless devices, thereby giving customers the opportunity to connect and play their own music.

Jeff Mandot, National Sales Manager, VMT, shares his inputs about VMT’s involvement with the project, as he comments, “We worked closely with the cafe to understand their specific needs and preferences and recommended a range of high-quality products from top brands. And the result is a dynamic and engaging sound experience that perfectly complements the restaurant’s lively atmosphere. The combination of British Acoustics and OHM products, expertly installed by us at Cafe Allora, has resulted in an unparalleled audio experience that truly brings the space to life. The sound quality is simply unmatched, and the installation was customized to fit the unique needs of the café.

We highly recommend British Acoustics systems to anyone who is serious about their music listening experience. They are truly in a league of their own and will elevate your listening experience to a whole new level.”

Prashant Issar, director of Cafe Allora, confirms the management’s praise for the quality of work the team VMT put into bringing together the sound system at Café Allora, as he exclaimed, “As always, the VMT team went above and beyond in their efforts to ensure that the installation was completed to the highest standards. From the initial consultation to the final touches, they demonstrated a level of expertise that was truly impressive.”

It is important to note that the sound system installed at Café Allora shares a great deal in common with the system installed at two other extremely famous dining joints in Ahmedabad called Poult and Ishaara respectively, both of which are ventures headed by Prashant Issar himself. Poult is an extremely famous restaurant that has gained a reputation for serving some of the best chicken dishes in town, making it a popular choice among locals and tourists alike. On the other hand, Ishaara offers an exceptional dining experience that emphasizes culinary finesse and taste; with the USP of the venue being that a majority of the staff members are mute and communicate using the beautiful and expressive language of sign language.

Similar to Café Allora, both Poult as well as Ishaara have gained acclaim for its use of only the freshest and highest quality ingredients, ensuring that every dish is packed with flavour and nutrition. And just like Café Allora, both Poult and Ishaara enjoy a magnificent soundscape thanks to the tried and tested power combination of Ohm and British Acoustics – once again made possible through the direct efforts of team VMT.

installed at Poult and Ishaara respectively, a member of the design and installation team at VMT shares, “As sound engineers and designers, we were thrilled to work on the installation of the sound system at Poult and Ishaara. We commissioned a thorough analysis of both venues, and decided to commission Poult with the OHM BRT-6 loudspeaker, the OSL M10 BT mixer, and the British Acoustics 2XL-Channel High-Performance Amplifier Systems and Radial 205 TW Single 5” IP 67 rated 2-way Speaker System. The combination allowed us to create a unique and immersive audio experience for customers at venue. On the other hand, for Ishaara we once again chose the OHM BRT-6 single 6” premium install speakers for their crystal-clear sound and ability to fit seamlessly into any environment. The speakers are powered through British Acoustics 2XL-Channel HighPerformance Amplifier Systems; while the OSL M7 BT-4 channel professional DJ mixer with wireless and USB inputs offers a versatile solution for controlling the sound system and playing music. All in all, the result is a dynamic and engaging sound experience that perfectly complemented the restaurant’s lively and engaging atmosphere.”

Prashant Issar once again shares words of appreciation for the work done by team VMT at Poult and Ishaara as he affirms, “The installation process at both the venues was absolutely seamless, and the team at VMT provided excellent customer service throughout. They were knowledgeable and professional and ensured that the speakers were positioned strategically to provide optimal sound coverage. Overall, we are incredibly proud of the sound installation at Poult as well as Ishaara, and we’re extremely happy that our customers are delighted with the quality and immersive nature of the sound system at both the venues”

O’Connells Pavilion Relies on RF Venue for Dropoutfree Microphone Performance

NEW ZEALAND: After three years of planning, and more than two years of construction, the redeveloped O’Connells Pavilion opened at the Queenstown Mall in the resort city of Queenstown, New Zealand. The developer leased two floors of the four-level building to global retailer DFS Group for its “Resort Galleria” concept, which includes a food hall dubbed “Eatspace” with a capacity of 230.

However, a hurdle presented itself: “In relation to where the customer mostly wanted to use their wireless microphone system, the electronics cabinet is located in the opposite corner of the building, behind a concrete wall,” explained Reuben Pearce, director at AV systems integrator Strawberry Sound Queenstown (https://strawberrysound.co.nz/). That, he explained, could result in significant RF dropouts. In addition, with Queenstown being one of New Zealand’s top travel

destinations and the renovated mall a major shopping destination, all the technology had to fit the facility’s visual aesthetic.

“We needed an architecturally appropriate product to use on an exposed ceiling,” he added. The solution was clear: the Diversity Architectural Antenna from RF Venue, a high-performance antenna system for wireless microphones that feature a slim profile enclosure. The Diversity Architectural Antenna can be installed in any position on a wall or ceiling and can be painted to match any interior. Using a unique patent-pending dual-feed antenna design, both A and B diversity connections are provided, so there’s no need to install two separately spaced antennas, resulting in a more professional look that room designers and architects appreciate. The Diversity Architectural Antenna was supplied by New Zealand distributor JPRO

“At JPRO, we understand that RF dropouts can ruin the most perfect production,” observed Andrew Sorrill, marketing specialist at JPRO. “We recommend the use of RF Venue products to our customers for any small, medium or large-scale wireless project because they perform reliably with all wireless audio brands, ensuring no dropouts.”

Pearce said the result was what he expected, “we’ve used RF Venue products in prior projects, so we know we can rely on a good result. They simply do as they say they do on the box. RF Venue supplied a direct and reliable solution to what could have been a very real wireless problem.” Concluding, “reliable wireless coverage from day one with exceptional RF connectivity with zero dropouts throughout the space. Our technicians were able to get in and out efficiently and deliver exactly what the client needed.”

G&D Expands VisionXS Product Series with Type-C Variants for Control Room of the Future

signals, the computer module transmits embedded stereo audio and optionally the USB classes HID (human interface device) and mass storage device, all conveniently via one single interface. This means less cabling and easier installation.

To develop products that are more compact and powerful, Guntermann & Drunck (G&D) is continuing to expand its VisionXS product series. The latest addition to the VisionXS family: the VisionXS Type-C computer modules enable modern sources to be incorporated, such as USB-C computers, notebooks, tablets and even smartphones, following the trend towards an improved and universal USB standard.

The new USB-C standard brings considerable improvements, and these improvements are exploited to the full by the new VisionXS and VisionXS-IP modules supporting USB-Type-C. The connection can be used to transmit video signals, keyboard and mouse signals and audio, all via a single cable. Furthermore, even the module’s power supply can be provided via the connection.

The Type-C variant transfers DisplayPort1.2 signals in Alt-Mode and enables a maximum resolution of up to 4096 x 2160 @ 60 Hz. For the VisionXS series, G&D uses its lossless compression bluedec, which enables authentic, “pixel-perfect” video transmission. In addition to the video signal, the keyboard, and mouse

The new computer modules are compatible with other G&D components and can be used either as an extender or in a matrix installation. Either CAT cables or fibre optic cables are used, with IP-based or dedicated transmission. All KVM solutions from G&D are designed for 24/7 use and ensure that critical processes can be controlled reliably and without any disruptions.

To maximize the reliability of the overall installation, additional redundancies can be developed. The implementation of a transmission redundancy solution normally calls for the use of additional hardware. Products from the VisionXS series offer integrated transmission redundancy without any additional hardware. The function is activated simply using a software feature key, either during set-up or at any later date. This innovative solution can increase the security and reliability of installations without any additional hardware costs being incurred.

The new variants with USB-C support will be available in the series in June 2023.

It is important to note that a crucial part of this pivoting process includes a sizeable investment into designing new workspaces and/or re-designing existing workspaces to offer a more comprehensive and inclusive ecospace that provides a comfortable, efficient, and inspiring environment to support the wellbeing and efficiency of their employees. And integral to achieving this goal is the fact that such spaces must foster key considerations such as seamless communication, enhanced collaboration, and improved productivity. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that in addition important aspects such as furniture, lighting, and layout; the integration of cutting-edge world-class

professional AV systems with the potential to offer long-term benefits has become a major consideration in corporate workspace design.

Conventionally, professional AV systems have included video conferencing equipment, digital whiteboards, wireless presentation systems, audio systems, etc all of which have been proven to enhance productivity and efficiency in the workplace. According to recent reports, however, corporate organizations now-adays look for professional AV systems that efficiently and effectively consolidate hardware and software components and enhance a user’s capacity to ‘do more’ and ‘achieve more’ – both individually, and as part of a larger team as well. And such professional AV systems play a key role in accomplishing critical tasks such as commissioning truly seamless collaborative hybrid conferencing capabilities between various onsite and off-site stakeholders and team members; to ensuring safe and secure real-time capture, storage and transfer of data / information; and everything in between.

As the corporate world continues to evolve dynamically, and companies continue to focus on creating increasingly innovative and productive modern workspaces replete with state-of-the-art capabilities; one does run a very likely risk of going overboard with the inclusion of technology.

Key feedback from AV experts around the world tell the story of quite a few organizations falling into the trap of over designing their workspaces with excessive AV equipment and features that are not always necessary, practical or cost-effective in the long run. In fact, many cases of over designing have left companies stuck with technologies and features that are inefficient, distracting, overwhelming, and even counter productive; thereby leading to increased technical difficulties, maintenance issues, and ultimately higher

costs that have negatively impacted the organization's bottom line.

It is therefore important to ask the question: how much is too much?

For this article, we chat with reputed industry expert Andrew Calov – lead consultant at CTS – as we explore the role of professional AV systems within today’s corporate environment, and gather key insights into acquiring and integrating workspaces with efficient and high-performance professional AV systems that can stand the test of time in acting as a long-term asset that qualitatively contributes to an organization’s operations and growth.

SI Asia: What is your approach to designing AV systems for corporate workspaces? How do you take into account the specific needs of each organization?

ANDREW: Here we cut straight to the chase on the role of a true specialist Audio-Visual consultant rather than using the services of a design engineer.

A consultant will examine and assess the culture of the workplace as a starting point prior to jumping straight into technical solutions. For example, is the business looking to be seen as cutting edge and do they have an appetite for the associated risk, are they more pragmatic and just want the tools required for effective communications and information sharing or are they barely tolerant of having technology in their meeting rooms and just require the most basic of facilities, which of course is becoming less common now.

MAY 2023 57 WWW. SYSTEMSINTEGRATION ASIA.COM FEATURE

One of the ways we at CTS, and I know that a lot of leading consultancies do as well, is to write within the reverse brief a “day in the life story board” using various fictional personas within the business emphasising their interaction with technology and highlighting the removal of what I like to call any speed humps to them working efficiently with the least amount of stress as possible. It’s important that the personas cover as wide a view as possible from the different areas of the business from junior staff, managers, and executive teams and if applicable the different job types within the organization from field staff perhaps to engineering or legal teams which will all have slightly different ways of using technology.

This initial step is sometimes hard to implement as there may be restricted access to staff as the management team might be hesitant to facilitate, however we would nevertheless write our user experience stories and if necessary, revise them on review by the client of the brief. This is why it’s so important to have communications with both the IT project team and the facilities managers.

SI Asia: How do you strike a balance between providing enough technology to support productivity and collaboration, while also ensuring that the technology does not overwhelm the workspace? How do you balance the need for functionality and aesthetics in your AV system designs?

ANDREW: Firstly, through the information gleaned in the discovery process outlined in the first question, its vital to understand the way the client works from a general view point all the way to knowing details like what sort of laptops they use. We can’t stress enough how important the detail is. In this way we can also set expectations on how visible the AV is going to be. Again, at the risk of being too obvious an advocate for independent consultants, the risk of using integrators to provide design services is that the reality is they have sales budgets to meet, and this sometimes presents a conflict of interest which comes at the expense of the client through over servicing meeting spaces with a heavy amount of unnecessary AV components. More AV the bigger the sale…and the happier the sales manager.

Whilst at a basic level we use AVIXA standards to ensure the screens are large enough to ensure an appropriate level of visual acuity, speakers and microphones are placed in locations so that sound levels are even and participants in a call can be heard and sound as natural as possible. When we consider the visual impact of the AV in a space its worthwhile remembering that the space must look great when it’s in use or not, so items like cable management cannot be an ignored.

Three tools from the design team are available to minimise the visual impact, however the AV consultant needs to stay strong on some points like screen size for example which is often a point of conjecture to ensure the system fills the basic requirements.

Naturally the consultant can work with the interior designer to conceal displays in joinery with the option of having them motorised so that they aren’t in the room when they’re not required. Commonly displays are installed in wall recesses and large LED screens “dressed” in a way that makes them look a part of the fit out rather than afterthought.

Similarly, we can conceal speakers and microphones in the ceiling or indeed there are speakers specifically

design to be almost invisible by being installed flush into a wall. Beam forming Ceiling microphones, once a no-no, are now a viable option in a lot of spaces requiring voice lift or as a feed into a conference call.

The final way of minimising the impact is to consolidate items like wall panels so that we avoid what I call wall warts – multiple wall panels of different appearance for lighting, air conditioning and AV, why not just have the one panel capable of performing multiple functions. All these tools need to augmented by not adding unnecessary features or components that may drive up costs or complicate system operation. Instead, prioritize the essential functions and components that meet the client's core requirements.

SI Asia: Please discuss about the process of collaborating with other professionals involved in the design process, such as architects and interior designers? Does this have any impact on your vision of creating and commissioning an AV system design that is scalable and can accommodate future changes to the workspace?

ANDREW: CTS has found through experience is that to set the project up for success, an early

FEATURE

engagement with the design team is imperative with the AV consultant providing input in to architectural, interior design, project management, electrical and mechanical services.

When the client is in the early stages and considering the range of audio-visual and communication tools, it is important to ensure that the technology investment is complimented by sympathetic building and space preparation. The best technology in the world cannot deliver on its potential without appropriate support from the built environment. To this end a comprehensive engineering brief to all the services should be issued at the commencement of the project with clear guidelines on what the AV requirements are. Even if rooms are not being fitted out with AV now, not only will the rooms benefit from understanding the ideals of acoustics and lighting now, but they will also be ready should changes occur in future where more AV rooms are required due to shifting changes in the way we work.

From an architectural point of view the layout of rooms may affect the AV cost and effectives ness. We recently advised a client to locate dedicated video conference spaces away from the perimeter of the building and move them toward the core of the building and therefore the extensive glazing which in turn saved acoustic treatment costs. Decisions like this cost nothing at the early stages of a project. Other common architectural issues that impact the AV design are ceiling heights, sunlight and sight lines. Ceiling heights have a direct correlation to viewing distances and therefore the effective size of room that’s going to work from an AV perspective, the amount of sunlight coming through a window could mean the difference between choosing between a projector and screen or a full LED display and associated costs.

From the point of the interior designer, we need to pay closer attention to lighting, acoustics and sight lines as well as the placement of data and power points to really create a space that looks great but also provides for effective meetings and transfer of knowledge.

Lighting needs to be even with appropriate colour temperatures for video with enough flexibility in the case of say a boardroom to provide for a dining experience, a seminar space needs to light the panel effectively at the front of the room without washing out the display screen.

The benefit of good acoustics for Unified Communications are well document however the benefits of sound masking in non-AV spaces is also being realised and understood and the delivery of these services are best discussed early rather than retro fitted.

SI Asia: Has the rise of AI and machine learning (data analytics) impacted the professional AV system integration within corporate workspaces? If so, please explain how?

ANDREW: Apart from some Smart Building applications we have not seen a huge impact of AI and machine learning in traditional professional AV although its coming. We’ve had a university interested in setting up lecture theatres to a particular academic’s preferences based on their history of using the room. The way we at CTS see the use of AI is within energy management through the use of room sensors and metering systems, this is the low hanging fruit when it comes to the early adopters of building data analytics. As an extension we note Microsoft and their connected spaces leveraging this technology to provide a way for staff to have the best experience possible when coming into the office and have some

MAY 2023 60 WWW. SYSTEMSINTEGRATION ASIA.COM

human contact. Integrating calendaring, room sensors and desk booking applications seems to be gathering pace.

SI Asia: What’s your definition of "too much" when it comes to AV systems in corporate workspaces? What are some common mistakes you see organizations make when designing AV systems for their workspaces; and how do these mistakes impact the functionality of the space?

ANDREW: Our pet hate at CTS is witnessing spaces kitted out with unused equipment, it’s a complete waste of resource, costing the business in energy usage, space, sometimes licensing and always the unseen price of embedded carbon costing the community at large. With the advent of monitoring tools, it’s a straightforward mater of understanding what components of the AV system are being utilised, otherwise we use the knowledge provided by our own embedded support staff or the client’s support staff. This situation usually comes about when designs and equipment from other projects are quite lazily re purposed for the next project without proper consultation or consideration. I see examples of this particularly with items like interactive LCD displays where the interactivity feature is barely ever used. Recently I visited a fit out that was completed where the client did not even know the screens were interactive types!

Often enough a client asks for some “wow” factor to be included in the AV scope, this can be a challenge as generally a corporate work space is not the ideal place to create an AV Disneyland, as fun as that might be, it comes down to “what is the purpose” as at times we would see that a lot of “wow” factor can be obtained by providing a facility of the highest quality that operates seamlessly and without fuss.

SI Asia: Finally, what advice would you give to organizations looking to design an AV system for their corporate workspace? What are some key factors they should consider?

ANDREW: Stay within budget, if the budget does not extend to say 10 rooms, much better to do 5 rooms well, so be mindful of the client's budget and work to design a system that meets their needs while staying within their financial constraints.

Avoid adding unnecessary features or components that may exceed the budget and work with the client to find cost-effective solutions, stop and take the user experience into account, will they really walk up to a boardroom screen to touch it and run their presentation?

Test and iterate. Once the AV system is installed, thoroughly test its functionality and usability to ensure it meets the client's needs, monitor the way the rooms are being used.

Remember, achieving the right balance between meeting your client's needs and creating a welldesigned AV system requires effective communication, collaboration, and attention to detail. By considering the client's requirements, functionality, usability, scalability, aesthetics, budget, and testing, you can create an AV design that satisfies your client while delivering a successful and functional solution.

CHI Art Series Hotel is one of the most unique hotels in Bangkok, Thailand. Located in the heart of Bangkok’s Sukhumvit area, the colorful, artfully-painted exterior captures the attention of anyone traveling through the area. Upon entering the lobby and being greeted by electronic disco music, visitors check in at the ice cream lounge rather than a traditional reception and realize the House of CHI is different by design. It’s playful and eclectic.

Opened in November 2022, the 68-room hotel is designed to celebrate art and life, meant for free spirits, artists, friends, lovers, and pets. From the paint colour and distinct creative designs to the whimsical furniture, fixture, and accessory, each detail is thoughtfully considered to create a memorable experience. and music are an essential layer of the experience and help to create the ambience for this extraordinary property. They chose the award-winning AtlasIED Atmosphere Audio Processing and Control System to help complete its playful playground.

After enjoying a scoop of ice cream, guests check into their rooms and then visit one of the many quirky spaces on the property, including the ayurvedic wellness spa, the pottery studio and immersive soul cycling room, or they can grab a bite at Mr. Quinn’s restaurant or a drink at the Tip Toe - Sundance Rooftop Lounge. Throughout the day, the hotel staff, or “CHI Ambassadors,” play a variety of curated background music in these areas. To control it all, they use Atmosphere and multiple AtlasIED loudspeaker models and accessories.

One of the most important criteria for their audio system was ease of use. They chose Atmosphere for its intuitive user interface and simplicity. The property installed the AtlasIED Atmosphere AZM8 8-zone commercial audio processor in the main office near the reception, although management can control the system using a tablet or mobile device from anywhere on the property. The AZM8 also provides built-in messaging that allows hotel staff to deliver live or prerecorded audio messages to all or select zones in the property, such as dinner reservation announcements or severe weather-related information to guests.

“When visiting the CHI Art Series Hotel, we want our guests to experience a new kind of energy - an elevation of all the senses, a rush of escapism, and a getaway from the ordinary,” said Chalisa Teinpothong, managing director. “With our focus on art and inclusivity, we celebrate every individual’s uniqueness. We aim to create and transport our guests to a fantasy museum, the CHI ‘Exhibition of Staying Over.’

The guest experience and creating memories are everything to us. We deliver this through all our senses via service, food, and entertainment, including our choice of curated music, to provide positive, heartfelt moments and memories for House of CHI friends.”

The Hotel coupled the AZM8 with two Atmosphere AZA804 four-channel amplifiers provide additional power to loudspeakers throughout the property.

The hotel installed several Atlas FAP43T in-ceiling, lowprofile loudspeakers to provide sound in the common areas. Because of multi-level ceiling heights in the reception area, they also installed multiple AtlasIED SM52T surface-mount loudspeakers to provide quality sound reproduction in larger spaces. These durable, 5.25-inch 2-way loudspeakers are an installer’s dream and can be easily positioned to direct the sound while offering weather-resistant construction (IP33) for indoor or outdoor use.

At one of the busiest spaces in the property, Mr. Quinn’s, hotel management wanted to provide the ability to change the volume of the rhythm and blues music in the restaurant as well as provide complete system control of all zones in the hotel. As the largest space in the hotel, they installed multiple SM52T speakers to provide sound to the space and added a Atmosphere C-ZSV wall controller to give restaurant managers access. The C-ZSV is password protected and provides control over any zone, source selection, and volume levels throughout the property. Additionally, the restaurant installed an A-XLR audio input in the space to provide direct input to the AZM8, which allows musical performers to plug into the system and play music in a specific area or throughout the property.

In the second-floor wellness center and spa, the hotel plays chakra balancing and reiki healing frequency music at a lower volume to help create a tranquil, safe and inclusive environment. The hotel installed multiple FAP43T in-ceiling loudspeakers to account for the lower ceiling height and added multiple attenuator wall volume controllers to allow staff to adjust music for certain treatments based on guests’ needs.

Tip Toe-Sundance Lounge is one of the hotel’s most prominent and popular spaces. The lounge offers striking views of central Bangkok and guests can

enjoy drinks while viewing one of the most unique sunset view scenes in the City. To provide tropicalstyle lounge music in the area, management installed multiple all-weather loudspeakers to accommodate the humid temperatures and wet climate. The hotel added a second C-ZSV controller behind the bar area and installed an A-XLR input to support live outdoor musical performances. The lounge features a range of loudspeakers, including FAP63TC shallow-mount in-ceiling loudspeakers, two 6.5-inch, 2-way all-weather SM63T loudspeakers, and four GSS-G all-weather surface-mount outdoor landscape loudspeakers. The GSS-G is designed to blend into environments such as gardens or architecturally landscaped areas.

“Bangkok is alive with activities and movements and our rooftop lounge has quickly become a favorite spot for our guests to hang out,” said Teinpothong.

“Incorporating music throughout the facility is vital to enhance and uplift our guests’ senses while adding emotion to our spaces. We added the appropriate audio equipment to support future private events with live music performances like DJs and bands. It allows them to easily plug into the system to play music in the lounge. It’s another important milestone that we hope will give guests even more reasons to return in the future.”

audio backbone for both daily use and the club’s roster of live events.

To meet the brief, PRO LAB turned to Powersoft’s triedand-tested Duecanali and Quattrocanali amplifiers were combined with Martin Audio CDD8, CDD12 and CDD15 loudspeakers and SX118 subwoofer to create a flexible, powerful system that provides maximum sound quality in the acoustically challenging semioutdoor space.

Utilising Duecanali, the two-channel amplifier designed for installed sound reinforcement systems, in its 4804 (4,800W) format, and both 2404 and 8804 models of Quattrocanali, the 4-channel platform that excels in small- to medium-scale installations, the installation also took advantage of Powersoft’s novel Dynamic Music Distribution system, which offers systems integrators the ability to scale up to four independent zones using the convenient dynamic routing capabilities embedded in its amplifiers (two zones in the case of the Duecanali DSP+D).

Jan Tarakji, general manager of PRO LAB, explained that the Duecanali and Quattrocanali amplifiers were

also chosen for their compatibility with existing speakers installed at Lumi Beach. “We recommended these models as they work perfectly with the previous set-up,” he stated, “and have various pre-sets that match well with the rest of the system, enabling the customer to carry on using their existing speakers.”

The amplifiers were placed in an outdoor rack in the DJ area, near the dance floor. Compared to the old system, the new Powersoft/Martin Audio set-up is “more user-friendly, easy to work with, and gives a great atmosphere in the area because of the quality of the sound”, added Tarakji.

Although the installation was a success and the client was very happy with the high-quality audio offered by the new system, there were some teething problems. For example, explained Tarakji, the SI having not accounted for the sheer volume of salty sea air blowing into the amplifier rack from the Gulf. “Since the amplifiers were placed outside and on the seafront, the rack got filled with salt-like particles, which damaged the amps,” he recalled. “Luckily it was able to be repaired, and Powersoft provided the spare parts free of charge.”

The new audio system will now be put through its paces during Lumi’s Beach’s regular weekly schedule, including Wednesday’s ladies’ day and family day on Friday, as well as upcoming one-off special events.

Rami Haber, CEO of PRO LAB, exclaimed, “I am happy to share that PRO LAB has successfully teamed up with dB Lumen to bring the best of Powersoft and Martin Audio technology to Lumi Beach. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure a seamless audio experience for all visitors, and we are delighted with the result. It was an honour to participate in this project, and we look forward to future collaborations with dB Lumen to deliver even more exceptional audio experiences.”

“At dB Lumen, we are proud to have partnered with Powersoft in contributing to the success of the Lumi Beach project,” added a spokesperson for system integrator dB Lumen. “Our team of experts worked closely with PRO LAB to ensure the installation of Powersoft’s innovative amplifiers and Martin Audio’s powerful loudspeakers met the client’s high standards for quality sound in the acoustically challenging outdoor

environment. The outcome is an impressive sound system that enhances the beachfront experience for hotel guests and visitors. We look forward to more successful collaborations with our partners at Powersoft in the future.”

Contemporary multipurpose venue Gray in Modiin, Israel, has been filled with colour and atmosphere thanks to a versatile Robe LED moving light rig installed that enhances the new and lively 900-capacity entertainment space. Managed and run by the municipality, its popularity and success lie in offering a wide range of live music and performance shows in a supper club format.

The lighting, LED screen, trussing – including two elegant circles above the audience – and rigging were supplied and installed by Danor Theatre & Studio Systems working in conjunction with consultant Dror Herrenson, who assessed the requirements and

compiled a tender based on a robust, practical, and flexible LED lighting system to cover a multiplicity of events.

Several companies bid on the tender, which was won by Danor with their specification of 12 x Robe VIVA CMYs and 12 x LEDWash 600 moving lights. The LEDWash is one of Robe's bestselling wash luminaires of the last decade, while the newer VIVA CMY is powerful, and smooth while combining brightness with a clear zero-fringing white beam, plus continuous colour transitions via the CMY mixing system.

The LEDWashes are positioned on the front truss for a rich and full stage wash, and the VIVAs are the main over-stage fixture, rigged on three raked trusses, which enhances the depth of the performance space. Both fixture types were also chosen for their small size and because they worked well with the 6 x 3 m upstage LED screen. Once installed, the lighting rig was slightly redesigned by Ziv Limor to optimise the venue’s

character and space, changing up the trussing angles and modifying the shape of the side trusses.

Danor’s Erez Hadar enthused, “This is a great-looking installation as well as a really practical and valueadded moving light solution that provides excellent rider-friendly production values.”

Gray Modiin’s lighting has been appreciated by many visiting artists and lighting people including Meir Hayon, operating lights for Israel’s famous puppet rockers, Red Band, who were playing at the time of the Robe reporting team’s visit to the venue. Red Band was additionally touring at this time with a floor package comprising four Robe MegaPointes from rental company Kilim.

Meir particularly liked the LEDWash 600s. He reckoned that they were "the best fixtures in the venue for sure!", also said that Gray is one of the "premier” venues in the country for lighting in his opinion, with decent headroom and a good lighting rig making it an ideal modern concert venue. He also appreciates the side lighting positions onstage.

Angles, accurate shuttering and detail are critical for lighting any Red Band performance due to its three puppet stars – Red, Poncho and Lefty. Their show features some special (puppet) guests and a selection of favourite rock anthems. They are also renowned for their raunchy and irreverent mixed in between song content and banter, which is hilarious. The puppet operators remain concealed throughout.

Meir has worked with Red Band for around nine months and is enjoying using the four MegaPointe specials, “They are an amazing fixture – they do everything I want,” he expressed.

Creating fancifully large iconic structures may be a thing of pride and ambitious vision for many. But this one – the Dhono Dhanya auditorium in Kolkata –might even go beyond, into a transcendental frame- at least from what it appears from the outset. Typified in shape, size and scale – like a massive conch shell radiating musical notes – the new convention centre in the ‘City of Joy’ sounds and looks really one.

A Government of West Bengal Initiative, the new cultural venue is a creative combo of Assyetm Stup Consultants for structure; Clarity Consult and HAVI Design for texture, with a host of OEMs for AV texture.

The Name & Fame

Those discerning art and architecture (add audiovisual too ) admirers who had seen the Esplanade in Singapore, or the Bubble Theatre in Beijing, or the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku (Azerbaijan) or even the Taipei Performing Arts Center in Shilin (Taiwan) may probably have to add yet another iconic architecturalcum-AV marvel to their list of exquisite convention centres that redefine conventions of design and construction.

The building features very unique facade lighting with backlit punched metal panels wrapping around the building forming a flower motif on the Conch Shell – a first of its kind feature in India –and the success of this exploit has a very expert contribution from the NBCC, Clarity, and lighting vendor LightKraft.

For, the newest addition to the contours of Kolkata (at Alipore in South Kolkata) – loved as City of Joy, and regarded as the cultural capital of India – is both a statement and testament of reckoning, in its own right. It was inaugurated by the State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the eve of Bengali New Year falling on 20 April, 2023.

Designed by Mumbai-headquartered Assystem Stup Consultants – the ₹ 460 crore (US$56 million approx.)mega initiative by the Government of West Bengal is characterized by a ₹ 40 crore-(US$5 million approx.)budget audio-visual systems and lighting integration scheme, making it one of the most exquisite iconic structures and AV projects in the country.

communication, the six-storeyed structure with almost 50 meters above the ground, and 11.5 meters below, rings in many a note of uniqueness- both in structural and audio-visual architecture.

Consider these notes:

• While it characterizes the Indianesque conch shell design on the exterior, it features European interior theatre design with stage lifts, revolves, scenery flying systems

• Comprises a 2000-seat Main Auditorium; a 400-seat Mini Auditorium; a 300 people (standing) capacity Street Theatre; a 1000-people capacity Banquet Hall; and an Exhibition Hall, besides large lobbies, and circulation spaces

• Latest and defining stage lighting technology, and an extremely high-end audio-visual systems integration

• It has as many as 30,000 lighting systems imported from Ireland, and 10,000 square meters of zinc imported from France

• All the interior facilities are interconnected via Dante fibre optic links as well as broadcast ready cabling for both audio and video- making the entire structure holistically as one venue by technology architecture

• The Main Auditorium also features a 17m x 9m 4mm pitch LED source view video wall which is planned for later installation

• The Mini Auditorium, on the other hand – meant for film festivals etc. – is equipped with a 22000 ANSI lumnen Chrsitie projector faced by a cyclorama screen, and…

Assystem Stup, and PWD/NBCC engaged the Puneheadquartered Clarity Consulting to consult on the theatre design, acoustics, audio visual, stage lighting and stage systems, apart from architectural and facade lighting designs. With Clarity having already made its credential big with their successful completion of the massive Bangla Biswas State Convention Centre also in Kolkata in more or less similar dimensions, it was an arguably proven credential case and choice for both the client and solution provider.

“The brief from the client was to create a world-class theatre and auditorium complex suitable for international, national and local touring shows, musical and cultural events, lectures, public meetings etc,” recalls Kelvin Ashby-King, principal consultant at Clarity. “It was also to be based on European theatre design with stage lifts, revolves, scenery flying systems, latest technology stage lighting, and state-of-the-art high-end AV systems integration.”

New Delhi-based AV solutions provider Hitech Audio Systems Pvt Ltd and its group concern HAVI Design handled the install, integration and commissioning of audio-visual systems for this mega project.

• VIP Lounge, Media Lounge, cafeteria, restaurants etc.

“It’s in deed a matter of pride to work on a project like this,” says Ankit Gupta, financial and technical director at Hi Tech Audio Systems and HAVI Design. “It’s a matter of endurance too,” he recalls, “we had to stay put with the systems for almost three years, for various reasons.”

INSTALLATION

According to him, the integration firm got onboard the project five years ago, the systems were supplied in 2019, but the installation happened in 2022. The delays were due to a variety of reasons.

The AV Architecture

The six-storeyed auditorium edifice has the main auditorium scaling four floors from third to sixth, while the mini auditorium occupying the first and second floors, with the Street Theatre taking the ground floor.

The 2000-seat Main Auditorium has a high performance Bose Area Match Line-Array System with three stacks and flown sub bass, balcony delay speakers and low level front fill providing a system able to deliver 100+dB uniformly through the complete space front to back and seat to seat of +/- 1.5dB and .5dB respectively. This is powered by Bose networked amplification and BSS processing. A Soundcraft Vi500 audio mixing desk and Soundcraft fibre based stage boxes augment the set-up. beyerDynamic wired and wireless microphones with remote antenna, and Sennheiser Cardioid Lectern microphones are tasked for speech capture while JBL Stage Monitors complement the audio reproduction task.

The stage is equipped with full flying systems for all stage requirements- comprising as many as 12 Scenery Bars, 5 Lighting Bars, Valance, Borders, Wings and Centre Opening and Flying FOH and Mid-stage curtains and Flying Cyc curtain.

A 17m x 9m 4mm pitch LED source view video wall is one of the video features on the stage intended for later installation.

INSTALLATION

In addition, provisions have also been made for later addition of three stage lifts and a 10m revolve to be installed in the future.

With a view to relaying performance video and signage content to the multitude of displays located at each entry point throughout the public areas and circulation spaces, a schemed digital signage is incorporated throughout the building.

The PA for Green Rooms etc was again tasked to Bose systems.

content. The video distribution system – as part of the AV architecture – is, however, similar to the main auditorium.

The Mini Auditorium, on the other hand, features Bose Stereo Array and Floor Mounted Sub Bass, JBL Stage Monitors and Bose PA for Green Rooms. Bose amplification and Dante Network along with Soundcraft audio mixing desk complement the audio architecture.

The challenge of restricted ceiling height at this venue meant that full flying system was not possible, which necessitated incorporation of winch-based stage system- and configured much in similarity with the main auditorium.

That the mini auditorium is also meant to host events like film festival and purpose move shows, it is equipped with a Cyclorama screen and a 22000 ANSI Lumen Christie cinema projector to bream the

Crestron DigitalMedia systems are deployed to handle the main video distribution via a 32/32 Matrix Switcher, with fibre optic and copper cabling solutions from Kramer for both audio and video signal movement. Kramer also does the supply of scan conversion equipment.

The control automation network, however, has been entrusted to Crestron systems again, with wired panels handing the job in the in the Control Room while wi-fi panels roped in for stage presenters.

All venues in the building are also cabled broadcastready with fibre based video/audio links provided in the car-park for Outside Broadcast Vans while audio/video pickup points for the media in each venue.

A Sony 4K stagemonitor and relay camera are tasked to handle video capture for both stage and audience.

Both the Street Theatre and Banquet Hall are provided with Bose PA/BGM audio solutions. Video output points for relay audio/video input and output are provided to enable content to be shared between all venues.

MAY 2023 82 WWW. SYSTEMSINTEGRATION ASIA.COM

Public Area and Circulation Spaces PA/BGM has also been integrated Bose solution.

Testing Times & Challenges

While the unique design of the building was itself a very potentially challenging thing for installation and integration of AV systems, the structural changes with increased seating capacities in the internal venues made it all the more complex to test the expertise of the AV teams.

According to Kelvin, the client wanted to add 400 to the till then intended 1600-seat capacity in the Main Auditorium - in the middle of construction cycle -, rendered it extremely challenging. For, it needed all the stake holders – Hi Tech Audio, and HAVI Design for AV, Canara Lighting for stage systems, Clarity and NBCC for design and acoustics, besides the teams from HVAC and others.

“The capability and commitment of these companies played a very major part in the success of this project,” says Kelvin. “It is this dedication and, of course,

expertise and skill sets these stake-holders brought to table that made the Conch project stand strong, and sing to its melody.”

Says Ankit Gupta: “Enduring such a long time was one, and maintaining the safety and security of the systems against the vagaries of weather for all that long was the other.” That Kolkata is known for rains, and alkaline weather that will impact systems if not maintained properly, indeed put a potential challenge for the integrator/contractor.

All endurances taken, testing times lived, and expertise permeating through, the Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium apparently came up to the expectations, and admirations of its promoters.

“The best part of our work reflects in the customer satisfaction,” asserts Ankit. “We achieved it, and that is prideful for us,” sums up Ankit.
