Foreword

Mayor’s Message

I have been the Mayor of Dereham since May 2022 and I must state that I am so proud to hold this distinguished office and the support of all the Town Councillors.

Dereham is situated in the heart of our beautiful County of Norfolk and I feel it is one of the best towns in Norfolk for its Heritage. This includes the Mid Norfolk Railway, Bishop Bonner Cottage, The Dereham Windmill, St Withburger Well, and Gressenhall Rural Life Museum to say just a few .

The Town has now just purchased some land to be able to have our own Country Park, also the Town Council has gone into a partnership with Breckland District Council to upgrade the Queen Mother’s Garden in the town Centre which will be opened in November 2022.

Dereham Windmill

Dereham Windmill is a Grade 2 listed windmill and one of the last in the Dereham district. It was built in 1835 and is a five storey brick tower mill with a boat shaped cap winded by a six bladed fantail.

Rescued from dereliction in the 1980’s, the mill was recently restored as an exhibition centre. Every month there is a new exhibition by local schools, artists and other organisations.

The windmill is set in extensive dog friendly grounds and are connected to a number of rural walks in and around the Dereham area.

The windmill is open to the public March to December from 10am till 3pm every Friday and Saturday.

We are lucky to have a great team of volunteers who support and help with events, fund raising and the daily running of our beautiful windmill.

The Partea Hut tearoom serves a wide range of refreshments from Wednesday to Saturday 10am till 3pm

The Town of Dereham

Dereham is a lively market town in the heart of Norfolk and has a considerable range of shops, eateries, restaurants and leisure facilities - whether you are after a night at the cinema, a game of bowling, a spot of tennis or a dip in the pool, Dereham has it covered. A market is held in the main market place every Tuesday and Friday, and there are several large free to use car parks around the town.

Local attractions include the Mid-Norfolk Railway, Dereham Windmill, Bishop Bonner’s Cottage and the War Memorial Hall. There are several large events on throughout the year - including the fantastic Dereham Carnival and Blues Festival.

We are very lucky to be surrounded by beautiful countryside and many attractive footpaths. In 2016 Dereham proudly secured Walkers are Welcome accreditation, joining the national family of over 100 towns and villages. Walkers can get a free pack of 14 walk guides from the town’s library, or our offices in the Assembly Rooms. Alternatively you can download them from the website, www.derehamwaw.org.uk.

Dereham is twinned with Caudebec-LesElbeuf in France, and the German town of Rüthen.

ST NICHOLAS’ CHURCH

The grade 1 listed Parish Church dates to the 12th century but there has been a place of worship on the site from 654 when St Withburga founded a community here.

In the churchyard is St Withburga’s Well, the traditional site of her burial. According to tradition the well sprung up after her body was stolen. The present building took its final in around 1500. Work then began on the detached bell tower.

It contains one of the largest fonts in the county, an early screen from Oxborough church, and Tudor painted ceilings in the transepts. It is the burial place of the poet William Cowper who collaborated with John Newton in writing hymns and campaigning against the slave trade. In the churchyard is the grave of Jean de Narde, a French PoW, who was shot on escaping from the Bell Tower in 1799.

The church is open daily for peace, prayer and sanctuary and is well worth a visit.

Worship happens at 8 am and 9.30 am every Sunday with a midweek service every Wednesday at 10.00 am.

St Nicholas’ Church is part of the Dereham & District Team Ministry which covers the parishes of

Dereham, Scarning, Swanton Morley, Hoe, Beetley and East Bilney, Shipdham and Bradenham.

For enquires about Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals please call the clergy.

We provide displays for Bishop Bonner’s Cottage Museum, the town museum housed in the Town Council’s building. We also provide the volunteer staff to enable the Museum to open to the public - the Museum is open usually on Fridays and Saturdays from May to September.

We look after the Town’s Archive Centre, which holds documents, photographs and artefacts relevant to the history of Dereham and a 5 mile radius around. The Archive can be opened to anyone wanting to use its resources, by prior arrangement. We are in the process of recording all of our collection to make it easier for people to know what we have.

We arrange monthly talks about items of local history interest. These talks are on the second Wednesday of every month. Visitors are charged £3 (which includes tea/ coffee and biscuits) to attend - members pay just £1.

Membership of the Trust, which runs from March to the following February, costs £12 for a single member, £20 for two people at the same address. New members joining between September and December can do so at half price, while those joining in January and February retain membership until the end of February in the following year.

More information about the Trust can be found at http://www.derehamhistory. com/.

Dereham Ukraine Aid Centre

Opened in May 2022 by Ian Odgers and Leanne Jarman, this centre has quickly become a vital hub for refugees from Ukraine, not just in Dereham but also from other areas. Although originally set up for this purpose, it has become a support centre for anyone in need.

It all began when Ian was watching what was happening to people due to the invasion of Ukraine and decided he wanted to help them in some way. After some initial phone calls he was given a contact at the Ukrainian embassy who gave him permission to deliver donations into their drop hub.

On Monday 28 February Ian put a post out on Facebook asking if any businesses in Norfolk would become a local drop hub for donations and this is when Leanne, who is the Community Champion at Morrisons Dereham, became involved by offering to put a cage in Morrisons car park for donations.

By Monday evening Morrisons car park was at a standstill due to so many local people wanting to give donations so they decided to have a lorry parked there in the car park to cope with the flood of donated items.

By Tuesday evening Ian had organised 18 drop centres in surrounding areas and the first lorry was quickly filled and left for the Ukraine.

Ian and Leanne then decided to take things further by looking for a building that could be used to set up a shelter for refugees in the area. After enquiring about an empty shop unit (the former M&Co unit), they received the amazing news from the owners of the building, Dencora, that they would allow them to use the unit free of charge and they would even include the electricity costs.

On 6 May 2022 the centre opened and Ian and Leanne have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the local Dereham community

Dereham Town Guide 2022/23 www.1Magazine.co.uk

and businesses in their help to supply furniture and essential items for people in need.

The centre is now fully functioning with a ‘classroom’ area where English lessons are taught twice a day on 2 days a week, the People Abroad team from Norfolk County Council are there on a Friday, as are the local library and other organisations. There is a baby/toddler play area and an area for older children. There is also a café area for local refugees to come together and make new friends. Leanne has now become involved with helping to find and liaise with local families who would like to host Ukrainian families.

When new refugee families arrive they are welcomed by volunteers at the centre and usually arrive with their only belongings in a bag – a new family actually arrived on the day we visited to write this feature. At the centre they are provided with a welcome pack plus other essentials such as clothes, toiletries, bedding and food. This is a safe place for them and many of them refer to the centre as their new home.

The Dereham Ukraine Aid Centre is quickly evolving into an aid centre for anyone in need and at the time of going to print is about to change its name to the Dereham Aid Centre.

If you would like to visit the centre the opening times are Wednesday 10 – 3.30pm, Friday 10 – 4.30pm or by appointment. The address is Old M&Co Shop, Unit 2, Wrights Walk, Dereham NR19 1TR.

If you would like to help support the centre, please contact Ian Odgers on 07540792050. The situation changes constantly and he will be able to give you up to date information.

You can also follow their Facebook page Dereham Ukraine Aid Centre for up to date information.

This centre and the incredible work and support that takes place there would not be possible without the support and generosity they receive.

Ian and Leanne would like to give special thanks to Dencora for the use of the building and the support they give them, the local Dereham community and businesses, Love Dereham, and the

A Poem for Ukraine

27th Feb the news broke my heart, I needed to act but where do you start? Social media, the internet, searches galore, I had made some progress but still needed more

Things started to happen as day turned to night, We needed a way to help with their plight. Contacts were made and so I reached out Leanne was the first to answer the shout.

The infamous cage that filled at a pace, I recall the picture with a smile on my face. Back then I am sure that we just did not know, Just how big this so quickly would grow.

18 drop centres to take all donations

Lorries being loaded at several locations TV crews and public attention

No sleep that first week is sure worth a mention.

Just trying to help those people in need Caused by one sick man and his desire for greed.

Lorries were gone but they need help more How can we support those that were now fleeing war?

A road trip, an idea, discussions were had, Just for one moment I thought us both mad, But we can do this, our guests will have needs, I still see the news and still my heart bleeds.

Locations is sorted, a room kitted out, I knew we could do it, I never had doubt. Cake, fruit and drinks we serve with a smile, The warmth from the guests make it all so worth while.

We try to make a difference, the volunteers in the team,

But still in my head I have this one dream, Where the world lives as one and none of them fight

I’ll go back to my dream now and just say Good Night.

Love Dereham

The Love Dereham charity has trustees from many churches in Dereham and volunteers not just from churches but also the wider community.

We run the Community Fridge at the back of Green Pastures Community Hub and though doors don’t open until 10.00, up to twenty of those in need queue for an hour before. Volunteers now serve refreshments to the Fridge queue and the need is so apparent that we are also working on creating a Social Supermarket, to provide food and other household essentials at reduced prices to those whose budgets are restricted.

Love Dereham’s vision also includes a children’s clothing bank, energy conservation teaching, and general advice. Our team is also looking towards establishing a Life Skills type course, where help is offered on wiser shopping and cooking skills and assistance with budgeting and financial control.

Though we can take action on many aspects of our vision by using existing resources, a Social Supermarket, Children’s Clothing Bank, laundrette, shower facilities and other initiatives will need a dedicated building. Conversations have taken place with local politicians at every level about the use of a building in our town, where many types of support can be found by those in need – the ‘go-to place’ for any help needed. Talks are ongoing and we are very positive that the facility we need will soon be available.

For most people Voluntary Norfolk is a charity that gets people from Dereham and beyond into volunteering, but did you know that we offer so much more?

For over 50 years Voluntary Norfolk has been working with people across the county to improve lives and strengthen communities. In 1969 a group of young volunteers formed the organisation, travelling around Norwich, towing a tiny caravan which served as a “volunteer bureau”, from which they encouraged people to volunteer.

Fast forward to 2022 and Voluntary Norfolk are now involved in many projects spanning the breadth of the county:

We are there supporting people when they need help the most through our work with carers, especially young carers, as well as those suffering from loneliness and social isolation;

We are leading new initiatives that enable communities to thrive, such as through Freshly Greated (our community arts venture in Great Yarmouth);

We are there strengthening the VCSE sector by providing training and help recruiting volunteers to charities across the county;

Our employment and skills team have been effective in getting people back into work;

All the time, we have remained committed to building stronger communities through volunteering.

To support our work, we established a trading arm, called CBR Business Solutions, which now provides essential services to over 500 charities and businesses a year. Our clients value the professional but personal and pragmatic approach they receive from our HR Consultants, Payroll and DBS team. We also have the go-to Jobs Board for the latest vacancies within the charity sector in Norfolk.

Operating profits from these professional support services provides an important income stream for Voluntary Norfolk, enabling us to continue working with communities with the most need. When businesses engage our services, they are choosing to make a positive impact on the communities they live in.

If you would like to find out more about CBR Business Solutions or Voluntary Norfolk, please have a look at the websites, where you will find a wealth of information and contact details: www.voluntarynorfolk.org.uk www.www.cbrsolutions.org.uk

Walkers are Welcome

Walkers are Welcome is a non-profit making Community Interest Company. It’s a nationwide initiative, launched in 2007 to encourage towns and villages to be ‘welcoming to walkers’.

The network has expanded to many locations across the UK that have joined this innovative community-led scheme to benefit from Walkers are Welcome accreditation. For national information, see www.walkersarewelcome.org.uk/.

Dereham became a Walkers are Welcome town in June 2016. This means we strive to:

• be an attractive destination for walkers, with top quality information on local walks;

• offer local people and visitors excellent walking opportunities;

• ensure that footpaths and facilities for walkers are maintained, improved and well signposted;

• contribute to local tourism plans and regeneration strategies;

• promote the health benefits of walking and increase participation; and

• encourage the use of public transport.

Dereham has 41 public rights of way, the wonderful Neatherd Moor and several other open spaces: our walks will show them off to you.

We have prepared 14 full length walks, seven of them starting and ending in the town, the other seven using either the bus or the train (the Mid-Norfolk Railway) to travel out, then walk back.

The walks are generally 6 to 8 miles (2 to 3 hours), though many also have the option of shorter routes for those wanting a little less. We have also prepared a booklet of 7 shorter walks, mostly 4 miles or less.

All of these walks can be downloaded free of charge from our website - see them at www.DerehamWaW.org.uk/walks.html.

Quote Four

Quote Four is an Insurance Brokers, based in Dereham. Founded on providing the very best service, it was the dream for one of the founding directors Jamie Smith who had been involved in the insurance industry for nearly ten years. He partnered with his friend John Murray-Smith and after nearly two years of planning the business opened in March 2015.

They believed there was a requirement for a modern, vibrant, clean, retail brokerage offering. It was their view that clients prefer to deal with their highly personal or complex business insurance requirements on a faceto-face basis.

Quote Four forged business relationships and working partnerships with some of the UK’s largest insurance companies, along with direct access to Lloyds of London market, the world’s central insurance market. This affords Quote Four customers a broad panel of diverse insurance products from which to choose, with the security and capital of the major insurance industry. The company prides itself on finding suitable insurance provision, where other brokers fail.

Quote Four use cutting edge technology from one of the most advanced software companies in the insurance market to provide advanced, brokerage software for their clients. Customers details are kept on ‘military secure’ servers in two parts of the country for extra security, so records are not maintained at the branch office.

Now in their seventh year and after nine months of planning, Quote Four recently moved into their newly refurbished, modern premises, at 36 High Street, Dereham. This new office offers customers a bright, fresh environment, and the business with room to grow. Customers are able to seek the advice from the highly experienced staff, safe in the knowledge that they will be looked after with care.

Dereham Town Guide 2022/23 www.1Magazine.co.uk

Quote Four are able to offer a very broad range of insurance products to meet a vast range of needs. For personal insurance, whether you have a listed property, barn conversion, thatched, terraced house or flat, we are able to offer competitive insurance products for your home. They can provide cover for your standard car, cherished or vintage vehicles, motorbike, or learner drivers.

They can even help those with a few more speeding points than they would like to admit, or most insurance companies want! Caravan, or travel and holiday insurance, legal cover, or breakdown Quote Four are able to place you with some fantastic insurance products, for your peace of mind.

But with many clients wishing to place all their insurance needs with one broker, this range of insurance products extends to their commercial business offering as well. Their diverse client base includes Landlords and property portfolios, management companies, engineering, construction, scaffolders, accountants, or solicitors as well as a stud farm. But exotic or complex requirements are just part of the business, as the company caters for everyone from plumbers and electricians to hairdressers, beauty salons, and taxi firms, so there is very little they are unable to offer.

Quote Four cater for the needs of clients not only in Dereham, but across the country. They have built an enviable reputation within the industry and enjoy the patronage of an ever-increasing client base. Their growth is based on word-of-mouth recommendations and that shows in their Trust Pilot reviews.

But it is Dereham where their core customer base lies, and it is with that conviction that they invested in their new high street presence. The company has some great plans for the future and is looking forward to an exciting new period.
