Mayor’s Christmas Message As I reflect upon this particularly difficult year for Attleborough, with challenging road works and Town Council drama all being compounded by the unprecedented Covid pandemic, I wish to express my profound gratitude to our local heroes (both seen & unseen), and share my hope filled vision for the future of our wonderful town. After all, this is the season of hope. I am also grateful to all those who continue to support our local businesses and invite those who haven’t yet to take a moment this Christmas and explore what our town shops have to offer. As mayor of Attleborough the very centre of what I hope to achieve is for our residents to feel a sense of community, even in the midst of our current restrictions. Community is more than a collection of people in a certain location. The very root of this word defines what a community should be; that root is ‘common’. It is a group of people who have something in common, which should create a unity of purpose in working towards a common good. The effect of such a community is often far greater than the sum of its parts. In a world that is becoming increasingly divided and polarised I believe we need to focus far more on what we ALL have in common than any perceived differences we may have. This is difficult as we often define ourselves by our differences, our political preferences, our social status, etc. - yet the truth is we have far more in common than many of us would like to believe. This is why I am so determined to build up our commonality, with a community led Town Council at its heart. My hope is that despite the current circumstances, we can draw upon the inspiration of those who serve others without thought of reward, and rally around a vision of what our community could become if each of us would do what little we can to lift those around us. We may be surprised to find that there are many in need of help not far from our doorsteps, and whilst we endeavour to help those suffering in faraway countries who have experienced honorific events, we should not forget those in need within our reach. It often isn’t the great or heroic things that make the most difference in someone else’s life, it is the small and simple things, the things known only by those we lift up with our humble efforts. This is what creates a community, and my plea is for you to look at what you have in common with those around you and seek to make someone else’s life a little bit better. You will find that it isn’t just them who are lifted, and you will have helped build our community.

Wishing you all a very safe and Merry Christmas, Mayor Philip Leslie

Sweet-Ness! I started my little business Sweet-Ness 6 years ago as I needed something positive to focus on after loosing 2 very close family members. I started off just selling cake pops but this has gradually increased to other sweet treats including coconut ice, fudge and peanut brittle, boxes of truffles, sweet treat boxes and platters which easily feeds 4 people. Everything is freshly hand made in small batches using high quality ingredients and decoratively packaged thus making wonderful gifts. Since lockdown my business has been really busy which I’m so pleased about. I decided to offer a delivery service in Attleborough which has proven very popular and I can also post some of my goodies. I’m overwhelmed by the support and wonderful reviews I’ve been receiving and long may it continue. For Christmas, I’m teaming up with Lucy from Floriarty offering a choice of a large decorated chocolate lollipop and hand crafted Christmas card for just £5. Contact either of us to place your orders, and follow us on Facebook/Instagram for news and updates on the promotion. Instagram: floriarty_x Instagram: sweetness.sweeties E: E:

“The last six months has been a very challenging time for the Day Centre as with the wider community, but we recognize the importance of continuing to support Older People and their families at this time. The well-being of local Older People is at the heart of the Day Centre and we acknowledge that the next few months are likely to prove even more difficult than the last, so we aim to bring some relief where we can. The services implemented since March are with the purpose of improving the mental and physical wellbeing of the individuals using them. People can look forward to a delicious hot meal, tailored to their individual dietary needs, a friendly face and companionship, help to stay independent and safe as well as support and signposting with any other issues that might arise. We hope that we can spread a little happiness over the festive season.” (Emma, Day Centre Manager)

Edna has been using the Day Centre for five years. Before the pandemic, she came to the Centre to meet friends, play board games and have a hot lunch. Since building based activities were suspended, Edna has been using the meal delivery service to get hot meals delivered to her door five days a week and has also started using the Outreach service once a week for two hours. Outreach worker, Sally helps Edna get to the shops when the weather permits or stays to have a chat and a game of scrabble. “I enjoy the lunches and getting the quizzes and word games that the Centre sends out each week. I have always liked mixing and talking with other people and particularly enjoy the chance to get out with the outreach visits.” (Edna, Attleborough) “The Day Centre offers good value for money and the Outreach service provides companionship as well as enabling Mum to get out and about something she really enjoys”. (Beryl, daughter)

“Thanks so much for sending the birthday cake, what a fantastic service you are running!!” (Alan, relative of meal delivery user)
